LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
From the Roots
F
or most of us, the holidays are a time for family celebrations filled with cheer and joy. For some, it is a reminder of personal loss and loneliness. It can be stressful for those who have mobile impairments that prevent them from traveling. Or a sadness because they don’t have the means to buy gifts for those they love. During this holiday season we are reminded again that this a time to give and to receive. What is the most precious gift of all? Our time. We can help spread our joy through the holidays to those in need. Or perhaps, as you are reading this, you might be feeling a bit down or depressed. Taking time to visit someone at a nursing home to bring cheer to them can have the same uplifting effect on you! Visiting veterans, who often feel forgotten, is incredibly rewarding at this and any time of year. The need for companionship and a good conversation is strong in every one of us. They will appreciate your visit and who knows, you might even make a friend. In Cheree Albert’s article in this issue, she discusses ways to cope with the holidays. One can check with local senior centers for support groups and many churches offer these to members and everyone as well. Balance is essential in life. Make the most of this holiday season by taking time out for yourself, to relieve any stress, for the time you spend with others will be filled with love and gratitude. Happy Holidays from your Legacy Editor and contributors! Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

Travel Smart: Best Travel Advice
S
o what are a few things that you can do to make your life a little easier when planning your travel?
Plan Ahead
Of course this is not going to help you this year, I know. But if yearly travel for the holidays is your thing, do not wait until the last minute. Dependent upon the type of travel you are planning and the time of year, start planning early. The following is a rule of thumb I use for Holiday Travel: • River Cruise — European Christmas Markets: Plan it at least 1 year in advance. The dates for 2020 are already dropping for many companies.
• Ocean Cruise — Plan it a year in advance! Insider Scoop: If the price goes down during October or January, for example, two highly targeted times for
the cruise industry to offer huge deals and promotions, you can often change your rate. Plan early and save big. • Tour — Plan your tour at least 6-8 months in advance, and make sure it’s a guaranteed departure. The tour companies also offer amazing deals in the month of January. • Hotels — Depends! If you’re going to New York City for New Year’s, plan

By Amanda Vallone that trip a whole year in advance. Lock in the most amazing rate you can and book a refundable hotel, or purchase travel insurance that would cover you if you had to cancel. If you’re going to visit family in a smaller town, plan 4-5 months out. • Flights — For most domestic airline tickets, the sweet spot is generally anywhere from 6 weeks to 4 months out. But for holiday travel, start looking about 6-7 months in advance. If you can travel on a low cost carrier like Southwest, they put their schedules out 6 months in advance and have the best flexibility in terms of travel arrangements. When you find the sweet deal nab it. Just have an idea from looking what a “good price” is because the closer you get to the holidays, the steeper that price will rise.
Be Kind
I know, we all should be kind… but sometimes in stressful situations the wrong side of our attitude shows its rearing head. As a mom of a 4-year-old, I am constantly trying to teach her by example that kindness is everycont. pg 8

LEGACY
Living Poetically: Life Begins at 70 Surrounded by a lifetime of memories, collectibles, antiques and her cats, Jeanette Strack-Zanghi, 92, having lived several lifetimes in one, is still in the process of creating her legacy. Jeanette gives a whole new mean-

She has a feeling that Ariel might be a writer one day. “What I love about Ariel is that she picks the most dour person in the room to make smile. Ariel loves to make everyone smile,” says a smiling Jeanette. In her youth, she had past careers of being a boutique owner, part restaurateur with her mother and sister, a job as a substitute teacher and finally an insurance agent. Retiring at the age of 65, it was not until she reached the golden age 70, that she moved to Cassadaga, FL and found spiritualism. That was a pivoting point in her life of when she really began to accept who she was a woman and her poetry and writing began to truly blossom. Is there more to her Jeanette holding two of her poetry books. legacy? “Yes, I do have ing to the word retirement. Born more writing I want to do. There are such talented people in this group that I am just aching for them to make it “big time.” Impeccably dressed at every event, Jeanette’s signature fashion style is eclectic, based on her many colorful moods, coupled with unique bold statement jewelry pieces that are sure to impress and is commonly found either sporting a stylish hat or a tiara. Even though she is a bit shy, her fashion undoubtedly reflects the opposite. It is no surprise that she was a fashion boutique owner. Although, upon meeting her for the first time, one may find her hiding under her hat at popular event. Make no mistake; Jeanette is keenly aware of the movements and motions of the people that whirl around her when she is in public. Her various friends of many ages and experiences give her the inspiration and material for her to narrate the joys, the sadness, the frustrations that many of us upon reading her poetry can relate to in everyday life. Frequently, Jeanette is with her husband Don, who is a spiritual minister, attending his lectures and workshops as her health allows. Inquiring about how she feels at her age she replies, “I don’t relate to being old. Do I feel like I am 92? No. If any age, I feel like I am 50 or 40 until I look in the mirror. cont. pg 12

Another Reason to Celebrate
Choose to Thrive and Forgive this Holiday Season

ome minor surgery before Thanksgiving required more rest than I am accustomed to. With great intentions to catch up on a few projects, I quickly figured out that it was not going to be possible. I took this opportunity to watch a few… OK, more than a few Hallmark Channel Holiday movies. It is certainly true that our brains continually desire to “complete the story” and I was blissfully drawn into how each movie eventually completes the story with a happy ending. Just what the doctor ordered to keep my mind off the pain in my foot. If only life were like these movies! To see the challenges and adversity met with choices for resilience and positivity by the actors and actresses I was reminded of the real-life cast of characters I am honored to know and love in my family, friends and clients. For so many the struggle is very real this holiday season. I am honored to walk with several who have experienced great loss of personal health, finances or even a loved one. A change in the dynamics of relationships can also feel devastating. The realities perceived or actual, for these individuals could not be any further from the movies. They noted that oth-
ers appear to feel awkward, not knowing what to do and say under the circumstances. Daily life as they had known it is changed, for example, with a cancer diagnosis. The process of grieving the prior state of health is ongoing. My dear friend shared that you “need to grieve all that you went
through and be mindful that it is a process”. My aunt also shared her thoughts about this when she said, “I am aware of the things I can’t do anymore but I am focusing on the things that I still can do”. What do you envision the holidays looking like this year? What would be ideal for you? Information about what is possible can be learned by asking these questions, shared with me by my dear friend who recently completed chemotherapy and a bilateral mastectomy prior to Thanksgiving. If you are the one who is struggling with health or even finances, it will be important to identify how

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP to spend your energy and other resources then communicate this. Reframing expectations can happen with simply good communication, as well as being comfortable with asking for and receiving help. Asking open ended questions, such as, What can I do to help you? instead of Do you need help with…? will yield more valuable information than a yes/no answer. Fatigue is a key part of many illnesses, especially cancer or heart conditions and being realistic with energy levels will be important. Scheduling downtime for rest and relaxation is essential long after the chemotherapy and surgery is complete. The result may be to unapologetically participate in fewer activities this year. Avoid the pressure of feeling the need to make the holidays perfect. I encourage my clients to feel good about these decisions for excellent self-care and recovery with a focus on the new normal. Important family traditions can be adapted to celebrate in a different way, perhaps allowing others to step in, learn and become comfortable with the new normal. | 14 |
Use healthy living strategies to be well and stay well. This includes staying well hydrated and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. Nourishing the body remains a priority even in the midst of all those wonderful family treats and traditions. This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a bit of the sweets, treat and other temptations though moderation is key for us all to support a healthy immune system. If you are feeling ill, avoid increasing the risk of illness for someone with health issues, especially a compromised immune system. Protecting and guarding your sleep and rest may present a greater challenge, though even more essential now to being well, continuing to heal and managing stress. Give yourself permission to feel and express your emotions. During the holiday season with increased contact with friends
and family there can be increased pressure to act “cheery” and hide any distress. Holidays are not a vacation from the real-life struggles. They are often a time of reflection and grief. Sharing your thoughts or “speaking your mind” can be a good thing and it is no surprise that the emotions of the season are often amplified. These can includes feeling of peace, blessing and gratitude as well as frustration, hurt and anger. This is to be expected as we do live in relationship with others. In those relationships there will be hurt, and when we are hurt anger can follow. Words are extremely powerful and have been described as a ‘double edged sword”, which can be both a word picture and a painful reality. Anger, for example, has been described as grasping a hot coal to strike at another when you are the one who is burned.
Do you understand your Medicare Insurance Options?
Unresolved emotions, including anger, are a significant source of holiday stress. Anger is not just challenging and potentially hurtful, it has a profound impact on our health. Researchers have found that prolonged anger has a devastating effect on physical health. The American Heart Association added anger to the list of risk factors for heart disease, along with other lifestyle markers like cholesterol, nutrition and exercise. Other studies have shown a link between sustained anger and headaches, stomach disorders, joint pain, fatigue and chronic lower back pain. There is a difference between an acute versus a chronic anger stressor. Dr. Dick Tibbits in his book, Forgive to Live, shares that a chronic stressor is when the event remains constantly on your mind and doesn’t go away. He adds that, “it is not your ini-

tial response - the increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, change of kidney function, release of fat into the blood stream and increased cholesterol in your bloodstream- that is the problem. The problem comes when these systems are turned on for prolonged periods of time…that is when your health is at risk”.
Forgiveness is not forgetting it is remembering in a different way.
Why even talk about anger in a holiday article? I felt a heart tug to include this conversation because amidst all the suffering that hurt and anger can impose there is great opportunity for healing and forgiveness. We may or may not have the opportunity to avoid hurt completely, but we do have the opportunity, as we gather together during the holidays, to begin the process of forgiveness. Forgiveness is a process, explains Dr. Tibbits, that includes how the memory of painful things done and said are handled; how negative emotions are overcome and how freedom from a hurtful past is required to achieve the desired future. The belief that life should be fair also can cause heartache and anger which makes forgiveness so hard. Why? Because even if we think life should be fair, it often isn’t according to Dr. Tibbits. It was Lao Tzu who said that a journey of 1000 miles begins with one step. The first step to-
ward forgiveness is to choose to forgive. As Dr. Tibbits notes, “Choose to forgive – even when you don’t feel like doing so; even when the other does not deserve to be forgiven and even when the other has not asked for forgiveness. Forgiveness does not depend on what the other person may or may not do; forgiveness is our choice.” For some this may be new information or possibly very odd and unfamiliar territory. In conversations with my clients I find that there are quite a few myths surrounding forgiveness. Dr. Tibbits explains that to truly tap into the power of forgiveness requires accepting that failures do not necessarily make a bad person. Clarification of these myths is essential and more information about this is included in the Forgive to Live Workbook, for example: • Forgiveness is not forgetting, it is remembering in a different way. • When I forgive someone, I let myself off the hook. The offending person is still responsible for what he or she did. • While some things are harder to forgive, if I cannot forgive an offense I cannot be healed. • While forgiveness is fine, trust must be earned. While forgiveness makes trust possible, the other person must show that he or she is trustworthy by the changes made in his or her life. • Forgiveness never makes a wrong right. If someone does something wrong, it is wrong, whether it is forgiven or not. • Forgiveness doesn’t balance the scales of justice…or suspend the law of cause and
DECEMBER 2018 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
effect for the other person; it simply reduces the effect the event will have on our life. • Forgiveness is a sign of strength…means that you’ll no longer allow the other person to control your life. • I need to forgive for my own healing, regardless of who did what. • Forgiveness is a choice and we can choose to forgive. • Forgiveness is a process…We may need to forgive something many times in our minds before it is truly forgiven. • Experiencing God’s forgiveness could place us in a position to offer this to others, but anyone can learn and practice forgiveness. Yes, if life were like the Hallmark Channel movies, but it is not, it is much better! The struggles and challenges this life has to offer are no match for the strength, resilience, kindness and determination of the human spirit. I see evidence of this fact every day. We have merely scratched the surface of this topic. Tapping into the power of this, including beginning the process of forgiveness is not easy, but the results provide hope. Navigating this process can require the help of a trusted friend or family member. It may even require something more and there are counselors who can partner with you. Coping with the holidays and managing the stressors it can bring is built on a foundation of honest, authentic and respectful communication together with a heartfelt desire to find the hope, joy and peace available to us all. Digital Technology A Realistic Look Computer Training for Seniors COMPUTER BRANCH
As seniors we have we want to have the best tools available to make our lives as simple and easy as possible. One of the best tools we have at our disposal is our computers and using them are not as complex as you may think. The key to being a good productive learner is to have someone show you what you want to accomplish then have you repeat the same action while they are right next to you. This type of instruction is called, One on One Training. This type of training is the most successful way to learning the computer. Another key is to have a specific list of what you want to learn. A broad, general statement like, ‘I want to learn Windows 10’, will not be addressed in one or two sessions, it can take months and even years to accomplish that. So, setting a realistic goal will be more rewarding for you and your instructor. For example, you might ask, ‘how do I order my grocery’s online?’ or ‘how do I get pictures in my emails’? Those are the type of questions that outline a specific skill you want to learn.
The second type of training is ‘Classroom Training’ just like you had in school. This type can be very dangerous for seniors as the ‘mix’ of computer experience in
a class varies greatly. You might attend 4 or 5 sessions before the subject you wanted knowledge about is addressed, and if a majority of students are familiar with that subject, the instructor might not address it fully. This type of learning has varying degrees of success. If you know you learn better in that type of environment, this might be for you. And finally, you might feel more comfortable with a type of training delivered via CD, DVD,

By Christopher Theodore Training Manual or even online. As I see it, this is a very risky type of training. You have no one to help you understand what you have just learned as well as the chance for a live person to guide you through course. However, it can be delivered at your own pace and in your own home as well. In conclusion, for seniors, One on One training is by far your best choice. It may be a bit more costly than the others, but you will gain a much deeper and ‘useable’ skill set than the others. For more information about Computer Training or to have Onon-One Windows 10 Computer Training Contact Aging Tree at 866-320-8803 and schedule your training today.

VITAS Healthcare
Before We Even Knew What It Was...
In the 1980s and ‘90s, VITAS Created Protocols for HIV/AIDS Care Before AIDS was an officially recognized disease, before HIV was identified as the virus that caused it, and before any healthcare professional understood how HIV/AIDS spread from person to person, VITAS nurses and doctors in the early 1980s and 1990s were on the front line of care for patients who exhibited a variety of unexplained, unpredictable and invariably fatal symptoms. During VITAS’ 40th anniversary year and with World AIDS Day commemorated on December 1, VITAS reflects on the early days of the AIDS crisis. Because the AIDS/HIV crisis and the American hospice movement evolved in the same decade, VITAS played a key role in HIV/AIDS care by:
• Developing national standards for HIV/AIDS care, supported by nurses, physicians, medical directors and clinical staff who documented processes and protocols for symptom and pain management, hospice eligibility, medications and other topics from the field. • Providing care where it was needed, including hospitals, nursing homes, medical clinics, jails, prisons, private homes, even visiting patients who were living under bridges, on the streets or in cars. • Understanding the gay culture by hiring LGBTQ staff who understood the gay community and became involved

Preparing for Holiday Challenges
T
he holiday season can be an enjoyable time with family and friends, but the busyness of the season can present challenges. Having loved ones with dementia during this busy time of year can be stressful.
The appropriate activity for each person will depend on their current stage of dementia and their individual abilities. Because no two people are alike it is important to understand about the individualized door of understanding. Until the key is found,
The extra physical and emotional stimulation may create problems with their ability to participate appropriately in a social setting. It would be beneficial for those caring for their loved ones with dementia to evaluate their own feelings about the possibility of behavioral challenges. This will prepare caregivers to be proactive and possibly prevent some unwanted situations. Just because a person has dementia does not mean he or she cannot participate in activities.
you will not be open to their understanding. Finding the key to the door of understanding is important and vital to behavior management. Finding the key is also an ongoing educational tool for the caregiver. When you use the individualized key, the person with dementia will experience less anxiety during activities. This in turn will allow for less stress on the caregiver. Our goal should be to get their attention, then gain their cooperation. You may notice the person

having difficulty participating in conversations. There are some techniques that may help during these times. Continue to include them in conversations and don’t correct them in a social setting. It may be helpful to assist them to fill in the gaps, but also give them enough time to try on their own. Be a good listener and take notice of clues that a response is necessary to continue the conversation. Because they may not be able to come to your understanding, you will have to go to theirs. Sometimes this takes a good imagination or at least a few “come back” comments ready to prevent that uncomfortable silence. The holidays usually include parties or a get together with friends or family members. There may be some family members who haven’t visited since the last year’s holiday. An introduction of the guests such as, “you remember...and give the name and relationship. This may put your loved one at ease since they may not recognize them at all. The response that usually never works out is, “Do you know who this is?”. This puts the person in an uncomfortable position. Since they may not recognize them right away it would be better if you used the suggestion above which gives them at least a chance to remember or at least seem like they do. It is a good idea if | 22 |
you put yourself in their place. How would you feel as you are searching your mind for a name to match the person standing in front of you? People watching and waiting while you are drawing a blank. This doesn’t have to happen. If the person’s family member and friends would be more sensitive to the feelings of the loved one with dementia and even look ahead for some of the pit falls, uncomfortable situations could be avoided. You also can prevent them from feeling embarrassed by intervening before it gets to that point. One of the most important communication tools of memory care is to be a D.E.A.R., Distract,
Encourage, Affirm, and Redirect. Each one is important for ef-
fective communication and cooperation. Distraction can prevent them from having to deal with an uncomfortable situation. You simply move their attention to another area. Encouragement is not only helpful, but necessary. It’s like gas in your car...It won’t run without the fuel. Encouragement can fuel the person by lifting them out of their mood, situation, or just a difficult time. Affirmation is answering in a positive way. This provides emotional support and encouragement. Those with dementia are often not sure of themselves so encouragement goes a long way in helping them feel more secure. Redirection should be done in a manner that does not cause the person to feel insecure. It is important for the
loved one with dementia to feel as normal and comfortable as possible in a social setting. Just because they have a problem with their memory doesn’t mean they are less intelligent. They are still an adult with real feelings and those feeling can be injured if assistance is not handled in the right way. Let the holidays be enjoyable for all. Remember, now you are making your own memories.

Social Security
INSIDE ADVISOR
Seasonal Work Can Empower You Soon after school begins in the fall, many businesses begin advertising for seasonal workers. It’s a good way for people to make some extra income during the busy holiday season or ease back into working. The diversity of jobs appeals to many people. Each year, companies also hire for seasonal workfrom-home positions. These jobs include: customer service, sales, tech support, call center representatives, healthcare support, order taking/review, and more. Seasonal positions may help bridge employment gaps on your resume. They show proven experience and that you are ready, willing, and able to succeed. They also can help you to develop new or strengthen existing skills through training. If you receive Social Security disability benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), special rules make it possible for people to work and still receive monthly payments. If you want to try working again, seasonal work may help you ease back into the work force. Read Working While Disabled at www.socialsecurity. gov/pubs/EN-05-10095.pdf or visit our Ticket to Work website
at https://choosework.ssa.gov for more information. Keep in mind that you must report all earnings, including your seasonal earnings, to Social Security; however, they also count toward your future benefits. You earn Social Security credits when you work in a job and pay Social
Security taxes. We use your total yearly earnings to figure your Social Security credits. You can learn more at www.socialsecurity.gov/ pubs/EN-05-10072.pdf. You can also get Social Security retirement or survivors benefits and work at the same time. But if you’re younger than full retirement age and earn more
By Harry Martinez Social Security Manager in DeLand, FL than certain amounts, your benefits will be reduced, although not dollar for dollar. Your bene-
fits may increase when you reach full retirement age. You can read more about working while retired at www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/retire/whileworking.html. Getting back to work can empower you in a number of ways. Social Security is here for you throughout your life’s journey — at each step of your working life and beyond.

10 Christmas Fun Facts
Oxygen
Oxygen Prep for the Holidays By Pat Garrick Patient Care Representative, Sego's Needing medical oxygen for the holidays? Are you traveling via airplane, train, and bus or even taking a cruise? The best way to get portable medical oxygen is to plan ahead to avoid any stress. All respiratory products such as Oxygen, Cpaps and Bipaps require a Doctor’s Order. Did you know that CPAP and Bipap masks and accessories also require a Doctor’s order? Oxygen orders require specifics such as, the liters per minute, diagnosis and the patient’s blood gas level, which is called the PAO2. There may also be a need for a six minute walk test for Oxygen. You will also have to decide on how much oxygen you will need for the duration of your trip. Know that you can talk the person supplying your oxygen to help you figure out what you will need to order and how much backup supply to have on hand. The portable oxygen packs will need to have charged batteries if no electricity is available and are lightweight to transport. In case of any emergency, it will be good to know a local oxygen supplier that is in the vicinity of your travel destination. The holiday season can be a stressful time. Getting oxygen ahead of time will help you focus more on what is important, having fun. Remember; set yourself up for success by giving your oxygen supplier time to get insurance verification after placement of your written order to avoid any delays. The process from ordering, to verification, and then for delivery can take a minimum of 3-5 business days. For more information call Aging Tree at 386-774-2446.
Do you know why Christmas is known as the season of giving? Or why being ‘under the mistletoe’ is a place meant for people to kiss? And the million-dollar question - who exactly is Santa? Some interesting facts about Christmas that you might not know have been unearthed just for you! 1.
In the famous song “12 Days of Christmas”, the number of times gifts are exchanged, actually adds up to 364! That means there’s one gift for every day of the year.
2. An old wives’ tale states that if you bake bread on Christmas Eve, it will never grow moldy. (This is not proven, nor is there numbers to confirm its accuracy, but it’s a fun tale to believe in, right?) 3. One of the more famous words associated with Christmas is ‘Noel’, which is a French word. It is derived from the phrase “les bonnes nouvelles” which means “the good news”. 4. Kissing underneath a mistletoe is a Christmas tradition that originates from ancient Scandinavia. The mistletoe was associated with peace and friendship, which may be the reason people kiss beneath it. 5. The single “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin is said to be the best selling single of all time with over 100 million sales worldwide. (Of course, thanks to Gangnam Style, this is no longer the case) 6. An ancient myth states that the Viking god, ‘Odin’, is the precursor to Santa Claus. He rode his horse during winter and gave out gifts and punishment to children. 7. The earliest known Christmas decoration is the apple. 8. The trend of Christmas tree decoration peaked in the 17th century when people hung decorated eggshells with patterns. This could have been the beginning of the Christmas bauble. 9. The first ever artificial Christmas tree was made out of goose feathers. 10. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the tallest Christmas tree to be cut was 221 feet long.

Cranberry Jellied Salad
Prep time 20 minutes Serves 10-12
2 cups fresh cranberries (about 1 bag) 1-1/4 cup water 1 cup sugar 1 pkg raspberry Jello ¾ cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped walnuts ¼ tsp salt Whipped topping
This is a great jellied salad for the holidays. It is colorful and can be served in heirloom dishes or can be made into a mold. It can be served with whipped cream or non dairy topping or my aunt served it with sour cream. Any way you fix it, this side is a welcome addition to your holiday feast.
DIRECTIONS: 1 small chopped orange (including the rind) Boil cranberries in water until skin pops Drain onions and place in cooling spray coated casserole dish Stir in sugar and boil for 5 minutes Remove from heat. Stir in Jello, celery, nuts, orange and salt Pour into bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, can be used in jello mold although sometimes it is too loose so I just opt for the bowl Serve with whipped topping NEEDS: Food processor or chopper and board Medium sauce pan Lightly oil-sprayed festive bowl
