LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
From the Roots
Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude. COREY SHENK, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
I
used to think that I would eventually “get to” where I was going and something or someone would make up that little bit of difference I was looking for. Someday, something, somewhere, someone might fill a space I didn’t know was so profound. It’s funny how we can not have any idea or understand the magnitude or size of an empty space until you are led to discover what fills that space up. In other words, I thought happiness was a place to travel to. Instead, discovering grace, unconditional love and gratitude has taken me to my happiness. Gratefully, it is within each of us and is our own to discover. This month’s legacy article is about a local artist named, Don Nedobeck. His story is one of those that inspires us to live within the moment we are in. It is a great example of a lasting legacy that will forever live on through his family and many others. In addition to many other great articles this month, Cheree Albert provides our readers with more understanding of Aging Tree’s changes and expansion helping others understand how we have been called to serve. Happy Independence day to you and your family. May celebrating Independence Day this year bring on new meaning in living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.
Let every issue of Legacy Magazine be your guide to effective decision making. We want to help you through the ups and downs of life. Start the journey with us here and now.

Travel Smart: Christmas in New Orleans, a Different Perspective
A
manda Vallone, who usually writes this column, is currently escorting a group through the Great Land of Alaska, so she asked me
So, when our Christmas Spotlight on New Orleans trip came to be, it caught my eye in a big way. The Big Easy is its own special brand of glamorous in even the most normal of circumstances,
to tell you all about how I feel about this year’s Christmas trip. Well, here’s the truth: Maybe it’s because I grew up in the south, but New Orleans, in my mind has always been ranked with some of this country’s most iconic cities. New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, Miami, New Orleans…Each offers their own unique taste and style, and the Jazz Capital of the World’s love for shine and spectacle is well known.
but they clearly pull out all the stops (who knew they had any to be pulled?) for the holiday season. Walking the streets of the French Quarter won’t be just walking the streets of the French Quarter—it’ll be a dazzling experience of lights and sounds with all the historical landmarks dressed up in their best holiday finery. Maybe there will be carolers in Jackson Square ready to serenade us with Christmas classics. Maybe you’ll find

By Brittney Crouch gifts for all your loved ones in the famous French Marketplace, where there’ll absolutely be a 30-foot Christmas tree (topped with a Fleur de Lis, what else?) there among the other Christmas decorations. And there will definitely be beignets to be enjoyed at the Café Du Monde. If that wasn’t enough to get me excited for this trip, especially at a time of year when being excited for Christmas isn’t even remotely socially acceptable, the rest of the tour was able to do that for me. A lot of Christmas tours I’ve seen focus on a certain aspect of Christmas: the Christmas musicals and shows, or the Christmas foods, or the lights and displays. Some people may love that focus, but I prefer a good mix of everything the season has to offer. There’s not just the Christmas lights and decorations, but also a musical revue by the Victory Belles at the National World War II Museum. There’s not just marketplaces for buying gifts, but also the opportunity to learn how to cook New Orleans style holiday meals at the New Orleans School of Cooking. But though it’s a Christmas trip, I couldn’t fathom visiting |6|
complish as much as our group will with so much finesse. Being from Florida, I don’t need snow and a roaring fire to make the Christmas season enjoyable for me, and it’s doubtful that those will be found in New Orleans. Grab your loved ones and join us. Roseborough hosts a Christmas trip every year, and I have a feeling this one is going to be the best one yet. Don Nedobeck’s Whimsical Witness of a Wonderful Adventure
I
f you’ve attended the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts, you’ve likely seen him sitting in his canopied booth, jotting personal messages to fans as they hand him a favorite print they’re ready to buy. With a face full of white
beard and sparkling eyes behind round, metal-rimmed glasses, he’s generous with a smile and quick with a quip. This artist and musician is Don Nedobeck, and for three-quarters of the calendar year he calls
DeLand his home. He’s known around the country for his fun and quirky watercolor paintings of cats, birds and other whimsical creatures. They’ve become his ambassadors and, over his 60-year career, he’s made a living making connections with others through them. Nedobeck, as he’s widely known, is a Wisconsinite, an adventurer, a freedom lover, and a beloved grandfather, father and husband who’s made a living from his creative gifts. He was born of a Jewish father and Catholic mother, educated by nuns, art teachers and musicians, and has “lived a life guided by angels.” Though the angels have seen him go a little off course at times, he keeps embracing the journey. The path has been crooked now and then, but Nedobeck wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Arts as Life
Nedobeck, now 83, was raised on the arts as a youngster in Mil-

By Vickie Pleus, APR, CPRC waukee. His parents encouraged him to explore his gifts by sending him to art classes throughout his primary schooling years, which also was when he took up music. After graduating high school, he attended art school at the University of Wisconsin. Professors commented to him that he handled watercolor extremely well, but his subject matter was “crazy.” Nedobeck says it’s just what comes out of him; he can’t change it. His collectors are glad he never has. After several semesters in college, Nedobeck joined the Navy and attended the Navy School of Music. Angels, said Nedobeck, had a role in his meeting the love of his life, Liz. After two chance meetings, they decided to never part ways again. They married in 1958. Their children – Melissa, Patrick and Marybeth – rounded out the growing family.
Workin’ Nine to Five?
Now a husband and father, Nedobeck felt he needed a stable, 9 to 5 job to provide for his family, and music wasn’t doing it. So, he landed a position at Wisconsin Electric. He continued playing with bands on the side, and welcomed opportunities to travel to Florida during the Wisconsin winters to perform and supplement his income. Liz continued to work in Wisconsin while he traveled. cont. pg 10

One summer, he was offered a four-week-long commitment at a prestigious hotel in Palm Beach. However, his employer would only allow three weeks. He took the four weeks off anyway and was fired. Liz fully supported him. “He was miserable (at Wisconsin Electric) and first of all, he’s an artist. I told him to stay and find something and come back home when he can, it’s not the end of the world,” said Liz. “I didn’t want him to say, ‘You
know, if it wasn’t for you and these three kids, I could have done something.’ I never wanted to feel we stood in the way of that,” she said. Finding permanent work as a musician was challenging. Ever resourceful though, Nedobeck tapped into another gift: painting. Buoyed by a Florida gallery’s immediate interest in his work, he continued painting from the moment of his first $20 sale and he’s never looked back.
Worry-free Philosophy
Eventually, Liz ended outside employment to support her husband’s business full-time. They participated in art shows 50 weekends a year for decades – only taking Christmas holidays – and Nedobeck showed and sold his work as far west as Colorado and north as Maryland. Then and now, while Nedobeck creates, Liz supports his efforts on the business side. Together, they have created some-
thing beautiful; many somethings beautiful, in fact. The Nedobecks don’t worry about tomorrow. Through 60 years of marriage, they’ve kept their relationship fun and fresh, and it shows in the art. They laugh, they have faith, and they hang in there. “We trust that everything will be ok,” said Liz. “We have angels who follow us everywhere.” Evidenced, Nedobeck said, by the fact that he’s made a living making art. Truthfully, “starving artist” was a close call at times for Nedobeck and his family. There have been countless weeks of not knowing what the next week’s paycheck would be. “There’s a certain amount of trust,” said Liz. “God says, ‘Trust me, and I’ll provide.’” “(On our wedding day) it rained all day and it ended with the most beautiful rainbow,” said Nedobeck. His life philosophy could be summed up that way, too: All’s well that ends well.
Go with the Flow
Nedobeck’s watercolor and acrylic works hang in galleries and private collections around the country. “I’m not a temperamental artist, so I’ll go to farmers’ markets, and they’ll put me between the onions and the broccoli and I still do pretty good,” he said. “Some people will say, ‘What are you doing at a farmers’ market? I say, ‘So what? This is what I do, and no matter where I am it’s the same artwork.’ And they say, ‘Yeah, you’re right.’”
He’s kept only one of his pieces: an abstract acrylic that hangs in his Florida living room.

Aging Tree's Exciting Expansion
Have You Heard the Exciting News? Thoughts on Your Need, Our Promise
A
s contributing editor of the Living Well Branch I am looking forward to the exciting changes ahead for the Aging Tree Community. It has been such a blessing to witness how Aging Tree has consistently grown and developed in their ability to help families in need and in anticipation of future needs. This proactive approach, as you know, is aligned with my heart’s desire to empower us with skills and resources ahead of the actual challenge or crisis event. We all know that this is not always possible, as needs cannot always be anticipated. Couple that with the fact that we often can’t or don’t prioritize senior care planning. When needs arise families want “experts at their fingertips. They need counseling in crisis and a friendly ear to direct them, with honesty and candor, toward the best solutions. They expect accessibility, reliability and swift assistance”, notes Corey Shenk Editor-in-Chief of Legacy Magazine and Visionary responsible for the Aging Tree Family of Services. This mission to serve with excellence is embedded into every fiber of their being and it is only natural to move further ahead in the areas where they already do their best work. “Aging Tree is everywhere you
are”, Corey adds, and a “brick and mortar building no longer can contain what we are called to do.” Aging Tree has always been a pioneer in the efforts to serve our seniors and their families of every age and this move to an expanded online presence is further evidence of meeting the need with true excellence. In the last 6 years thousands of families have been served and that number and the need is increasing at a sobering rate. There will now be an enhanced ability to access help from the comfort of your own home or wherever you are. The Legacy Magazine will continue to empower you with Evidence Based Education and Resources as well as access to Senior Legal Advice, Expert Insider Information, Ways to keep Your Brain Sharp, Travel Opportunities and a Library of Resources for Quality Providers. INSIDE ADVISOR Legal Can You Change Your “Revocable” Trust to an “Irrevocable” Trust Such a simple question begs for a simple answer. Problem is that there is no simple answer, but I’ll give it a try. First, you need to understand the difference between a revocable and irrevocable trust. The difference is that every word of a revocable trust can be changed, but in an irrevocable trust, there is AT LEAST one word that can’t be changed. Nowadays, the reason elderly wants an irrevocable trust is to protect their assets from the prohibitive cost of care
they need to receive at home, in an assisted living community, or a nursing home. Most facing that challenge have heard that if your “stuff” – that’s what I call assets – is owned by an irrevocable trust, then they might qualify for Medicaid or other benefits. That’s true, but ONLY if the stuff was in there for 5 years. I don’t have enough space to explain the “5-year” rule this time, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. So, here’s the answer to the question. Yes, you can change a revocable trust to an irrevocable trust by doing a “restatement” that is structured correctly to provide asset protection AND with a

method for accessing your stuff if you need it. But if you need government assistance before the 5 years is up, the trust won’t work for its intended purpose. The moral of the story is that if you are worried that you may want to protect your assets from long-term care costs, get an irrevocable trust NOW!

Connected care for limb loss patients
By HealthSouth Altamonte Springs Staff According to the Amputee Coalition, there are more than two million people in the United States living with limb loss. Limb loss or amputation can result from trauma, cancer, vascular disease or diabetes. Patients may encounter physical or emotional issues after undergoing amputation, but targeted rehabilitation programs can provide them with the hope needed to live a productive and active life. Amputee rehabilitation programs, like the one at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altamonte Springs, allow patients to regain independence and build confidence after experiencing limb loss. A team of clinical experts provides connected care through a variety of services that improves a patient’s function and overall quality of life. The multidisciplinary care providers a patient may encounter during their limb loss rehabilitation journey can include a rehabilitation physician or physiatrist, rehabilitation nurses or those credentialed as a CRRN, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, wound care coordinators and prosthetists. This team works together to develop a tailored care plan that helps patients meet their goals and reach their most optimal levels of independence. While no one expects limb loss, more than 185,000 amputations occur each year. VITAS Healthcare
INSIDE ADVISOR
To Choose the Right Hospice, Ask the Right Questions Many of our everyday decisions about healthcare are limited by factors such as cost, insurance coverage or a list of pre-approved providers. But we really do have a choice when selecting a hospice provider. VITAS® Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of hospice care, offers this checklist to help with one of life’s most meaningful decisions. • Explore hospice options. Identify hospice providers in your area and ask about details for comparison. • Ask about coverage. What sources of payment do they accept? Are medications and home medical equipment covered?
• Explore different types of hospice care. VITAS offers all levels of Medicare-mandated hospice care: routine, continuous, inpatient and respite care. • Ask about hospice expertise. Does the hospice team have hospice credentials or special training? Is the team able to meet a range of patient needs? • Research education and afterhours care. VITAS is available 24/7/365 to answer questions and dispatch a team member to the bedside when needed. • Inquire about bereavement and grief support. How does the team prepare family members and caregivers for a patient’s death? How long does grief support last?
By Shanda Nobles-Miltor, VITAS Healthcare Senior General Manager • Ask about volunteers. Hospice volunteers can offer companionship, personal care, life-story journaling and more. For 40 years, VITAS has worked to ensure that patients and their families have immediate access to compassionate and high-quality end-of-life care. Learning about end-of-life care options can transform a challenging time into a comfortable experience. For more information about hospice care or end-of-life care options, call VITAS Healthcare at 866.759.6695 or visit VITAS.com.
When It’s Time, Choose the Hospice Experts Did you know? Medicare, Medicaid and many
private insurers provide 100% coverage of hospice services in your home: nurse, hospice aide, social worker, chaplain and more. When it’s time for hospice care, the choice is yours. Ask questions. Weigh your options. Then put your mind at ease by choosing VITAS, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. We’re available 24/7/365 with answers and compassionate care.

Digital Technology How Technology Influences Your Everyday Lives. COMPUTER BRANCH
D
id you ever think about how today’s digital technology influence our everyday lives? Were you aware that you have unfettered access to just about anything you want or need just by using your Internet connection? To give you some examples; 1. Shop Online 2. Enjoy various forms of entertainment just about whenever we want 3. Expand our knowledge on just about any subject we are interested in 4. Let’s us stay in touch with family and friends
Shopping Online:
Face it; ‘brick and mortar’ stores are going to be a thing of the past soon. The overhead costs are getting higher and higher and staffing is yet another issue. The Internet offers a very viable solution to this. Wal-Mart, Publix, and others all have a strong presence on the Internet – we can sit in front of our computer (tablets or phones) and shop till our heart’s content. What could be easier?
Entertainment:
We can now ‘talk to’ just about all our devices. Alexa, Amazon Tablets and Fire TC Sticks, Google Home and on our phones are just a few of the applications that respond to our requests. The Marriot Hotels are putting Alexa in some select location. You can order room service, housecleaning and ever make dinner reservations all with your voice. At home, you can have a ‘smart’ home with a verity of devices (Google and Alexa). I just purchased a ‘smart’ TV that I can control with my voice!
Browsers:
Just about any Internet browser can take us all over the world without ever leaving home! If we feel we are getting too lazy we just type in ‘work out videos’ and low and behold we have pages and pages of choices – now the most difficult choice is selecting one and actually doing it! We can also use ‘apps’ (applications) to book trips, check on flights, get daily weather forecasts for our zip code and so much more.
By Christopher Theodore in and of course Twitter. Each one of these has their own unique way of keeping us informed as well as updated to what is going on in our world. All of the above is available right now with little to no cost! I encourage you to look deeper into any of the above. If you need any help or advice contact the Aging Tree and we can get you going. For more information about Computer Training or to have Onon-One Windows 10 Computer Training Contact Aging Tree at 866-320-8803 and schedule your training today.

Your Physical Health
The Doctors at Alpha Medical Group Offer a Safe, Effective, Painless Solution to Erectile Dysfunction and NOW Vaginal Atrophy Erectile dysfunction (ED) can interfere significantly with a couple’s intimacy—not to mention the toll it takes on a man’s mental and emotional health. Until now, men have had few options that work well, and many of those options can be painful. A medical breakthrough, The SwissWave Protocol at Alpha Medical Group, has proven to be the holy grail of ED treatment: a painless, no-needle procedure that actually works.
The SwissWave Protocol uses electromagnetic acoustical pulsed energy waves to open existing blood vessels, grow new blood vessels, and stimulate the growth of new erectile tissue in the penis. The FDA registered device for the treatment of soft tissue repair was developed in Switzerland and is widely used throughout Europe and Canada. The reality is that an estimated 70 percent of all men don’t respond to popular pills like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. Some get a
partial erection, but that doesn’t allow for full sexual activity. And don’t forget the dangerous side effects and drug interactions associated with those pills, which prevent many guys from taking them at all. This leaves only two other viable medical options: an injection or a surgical implant. The choice is essentially to stick a needle into your penis before every sexual encounter or undergo surgery on the penis—with the possibility of serious complications and frequent failure rates. Get back in the game with SwissWave. For our Alpha FEMAL patients, we offer ThermiVa® and ThermiSmooth®. ThermiVa® is a non-invasive, non-hormonal treatment that uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue, with little to no discomfort and no downtime. When heated, collagen fibrils will denature and contract, which is believed to lead to the observed tissue tightening. TAKE BACK CONTROL Women don't want to feel as though they've lost control of their body - especially when

it affects intimate parts of their life. Excessive stretching of the vaginal muscles is a common occurrence after vaginal birth or simply due to aging. Damage can diminish sensation during intimate activity, reduce satisfaction, and change the relationship
between partners. Laxity of the skin is caused by numerous factors and no area is immune to this natural decline. ThermiSmooth® Body is performed by targeting the areas under the skin, providing a temporary reduction of cellulite. There are a series of applications over 6-8 weeks that are gentle, and patients often say it feels like receiving a warm massage. Get beach ready. Summer is here. With offices in Palm Coast, Jacksonville, and one opening soon in Leesburg, there is an Alpha Medical Group clinic near you.

Genesis Family Practice of Ormond Beach is proud to welcome Dr. Collazo
Dr. Sylvia Collazo found her passion for medicine as a young child in Puerto Rico while watching her grandmother, who was a nurse, care for sick people in their home. Her grandmother would care for those in the community who had no money, giving them injections and caring for their pains and illnesses while asking for nothing in return. It was the giving spirit that she saw within her grandmother that taught Dr. Collazo about compassion and respect for fellow man, ultimately driving her desire to become a physician. Dr. Collazo did her residency at The Medical Center in Aguadillo Puerto Rico and The Medical Center at Rio
Peidras Puerto Rico; she successfully achieved her goal in 1977 by completing medical school at Central Del Este Medicine School in the Dominican Republic with her degree in medicine. She went on to later study Psychology, earning a secondary degree as a Physiologist in Puerto Rico. While building her career as a physician she also raised her 3 beautiful children, 2 daughters and a son, as a single parent. Her passions include hiking and working with the community on ways to live a healthier life through education and resource assistance. Veterans Information
INSIDE ADVISOR
MAIL CALL:
While the Veterans Administration (VA) recently has made great strides in the delivery of healthcare and monetary benefits, there are still a few mysteries that perplex the best of us. So, each month we consult our trusted resources to bring you answers to the most vexing VA questions. Send us your questions at customerservice@ agingtree.com or call and you could be featured in Ask Sarge as well as and those selected will get a free jar gripper from Aging Tree. Dear Sarge, Last week I went to the Orange City VA Clinic for my annual physical and it was locked up tighter than a drum! What happened to the clinic and where do I go now? Tim , Lake Helen A: Well I sure am sorry you didn’t get the word, troop, but the clinic has moved to 1200 Deltona Blvd. in Deltona! Not only has it moved but it has doubled in size and offers more services than before! At just over 10,000 square feet it will have a total staff of at least 25 employees. The clinic is located in a shopping plaza which may offer the possibility of future expansion if VA feels the need. Although it will have many more services it still is not the largest model of clinic available so some folks may still need to travel to the William V. Chappell, Jr. VA Outpatient Clinic in Daytona Beach or the Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona, Orlando for certain services. Two improvements that cut down on some of the travel is the ability to have a video teleconference with the Podiatry and Retinal Care departments in Lake Nona. In certain circumstances, a veteran can even be seen at home over the computer! A secure link is established
and you can talk with a doctor over video! Five Fun Outdoor Activities for Seniors This Summer 1. Take a walk. Walking is a wonderful way to engage the senses, whether listening to early morning birdcalls, taking in the sights of a farmer’s market, or savoring the cool air inside the mall. It also provides great exercise for all fitness levels since distance and pace can easily be adjusted—just make sure Grandma or Grandpa has sturdy footwear to stay safe and comfortable. 2. Plan a fishing trip. With peak time in the quiet, early morning hours, fishing offers a peaceful way to enjoy the outdoors. It can also instill a sense of accomplishment for a senior citizen to reel in a catch. 3. Host a picnic. Enjoying a meal al fresco is a pleasure on its own but packing a kite or bocce set adds another element of fun. If your loved one has a condition that requires they stay close to home, you can always hold the picnic in your own backyard. 4. See a movie with the grandkids. When summer’s heat is at its peak, seek refuge in the air conditioning of your local movie theatre. Select a family-friendly flick that all generations can enjoy. Afterward, go for ice cream or another treat and invite your children and parent to recount their favorite movie moments. 5. Catch a baseball game. From the crack of the bat to the aroma of popcorn, a baseball game brings many nostalgic sounds, smells, and sights. It also provides built-in comforts, such as seating and bathroom access. Don’t feel limited to professional league games: grandparents will relish the opportunity to root on their grandkids during a game of softball.

Planning Ahead for Your Loved One with Special Needs
F
lorida’s active aging residents are familiar with the longstanding fact that Florida continues to lead the nation as the number one retirement state. We know it’s for the balmy weather and beaches, recreation, cost of living, healthcare options..., but did you know many retire here because it’s easier to care for their aging child or sibling with a development disability? “For decades we’ve had families retire to Central Florida from other states for our residential care and day training services,” said Steven DeVane, Duvall Homes’ CEO. Aging caregivers have turned to Duvall Homes since 1945 as they plan ahead for their own care and their aging dependent with special needs – both who are living longer. With Duvall being a short scenic drive from The Villages, John Knox Village of Central Florida, Daytona’s new Latitude Margaritaville and numerous other retirement communities, more families are taking advantage of the programs and services at Duvall’s 16 group homes and day training center. Learn more at DuvallHomes.org. For state funding eligibility, contact Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities at APD.MyFlorida.org.

Recipe
Penny's Blueberry Cake My cousin Penny is one of the best cooks I know. Our Smörgåsbords aren’t the same since she moved. When my family was younger and we were all in the same area, we would get together for the annual 4th of July event at one of our houses. Her blueberry cake was one of the highlights. I make this cake and it is wonderful, yet somehow it just tastes better when she makes it. I hope you enjoy it as much as our family does.
By Lisa Buckner
DIRECTIONS:
9 x 13 glass or metal pan Bake at 350 Degrees for 40 minutes Cream butter and sugar together with mixer Fluff 4¼ c of flour, baking powder and salt together and sift once Add a little to creamed mixture alternating with milk until all mixed in Dust blueberries with remaining (¼ c) flour, this will keep them from sinking to bottom of cake Fold in blueberries by hand Place in well-greased pan and bake This cake does not rise a lot Cake does not brown much so don’t go by color for doneness. Use toothpick inserted in center to test Let cool in pan Mix together hard sauce ingredients and refrigerate
