LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
From the Roots
ere at Aging Tree we are excited to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on August 21st. We care deeply about being advocates to protect the dignity and rights of our senior friends. This months edition contains helpful information from Cheree and Vickie about ideas for things seniors can do to celebrate the day and also how we can honor our elders. As I was thinking about this issue, I recalled ways I remember celebrating my grandparents. From youth to adulthood, my appreciation and understanding of them evolved. Certainly we experience our elders having more knowledge than us and being stronger and faster than us as we are youngsters. But as we age, we watch a reversal of that role. One of the things I enjoy doing most is people watching. Lately, I’ve paid attention to how people treat aging seniors. I’m reminded that their knowledge is great and deep, but technology leaves many of them behind. Many of them drive slower or walk slower. I witness impatience at grocery stores, or driving. It is a powerful lesson to remember that they have earned the right to go slow. I can only pray I live to be old. I can only hope that people are kind and remember I am someone’s son, someone’s father, someone’s love, someone’s friend. I hope you enjoy this month's Legacy story of Mr. Bob Boffa who exemplifies someone we can appreciate and celebrate. This edition also provides great air conditioning tips from Knights Air Conditioning for the summer months, Senior Computer Services helps us understand 3 ways to perform computer backups and Selis Elder Law provides some great reading ideas to help you plan for your secure future. I hope you find these and the additional articles this month very helpful. Happy National Senior Citizens Day! Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.
COREY SHENK, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Let every issue of Legacy Magazine be your guide to effective decision making. We want to help you through the ups and downs of life. Start the journey with us here and now.

Travel Smart: How Souvenirs from Your Favorite Spots Tell Your Story
S
ometimes I think it’s a state law to have a gift shop upon entry and exit of the most dreamed of destinations. And many times I see the tourists spending more time in the gift shop than visiting the site itself. Honestly, if I brought a souvenir back from every single destination I would need a much bigger house. But here are some of my favorites and the story behind them: Zimbabwe Giraffe Last year I took the most amazing trip of my life: Africa! While in Zimbabwe to see Victoria Falls, we went to a dinner that incorporated traditional and local foods (this is where I ate a Mopani worm—salty!) as well as handmade crafts from local artists, painters, and woodworkers. In the middle of the outdoor dining area there were three men sitting on the ground hand carving animals out of teak and mahogany wood. One of the gentlemen asked me if I would look at his art, and he handed me a hippopotamus he had just carved. The hippo was wonderful, and I bought it…but this Giraffe spoke to me in ways
one could never understand. My heart filled with joy and my eyes welled with tears. He would be the most perfect souvenir from the most incredible trip. So, I asked how much it was, even knowing I shouldn’t because I couldn’t imagine carrying it the whole rest of the trip and several more flights home…But $15 USD later I was the owner of my most
prized possession from Zimbabwe. The steal of the deal allowed me wiggle room for a bit more shopping and a tip for the artisans. My giraffe now stands tall in my foyer welcoming every visitor who passes my threshold.

By Amanda Vallone Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil Buddhas In April, I had the pleasure of traveling on the Mekong River through Vietnam and Cambodia on a luxury river cruise where we visited both the top tourist attractions and the smallest of villages. The entire trip was a lesson of peace and forgiveness. Though the people of Cambodia, as well as Vietnam, have encountered and survived some of the greatest atrocities that humans can inflict on each other, they were still extremely humble and peaceful people. After visiting the Killing Fields outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, it was incredible to me that our guide (who lost ¾ of his own family to the Khmer Rouge Regime) could be so kind, loving, and peaceful. He explained to us how his Buddhist beliefs allowed him the ability and strength to forgive. Buddhists believe in Karma and reincarnation, and it was my understanding through listening to their stories that holding grudges or fear from their past will only harm their future. This peace and serenity they preach, seek and |6|
share was infectious, and it gave me so much respect for their Buddhist belief system. When I came across these quirky buddhas, I knew they were meant for me and had a place in my home. New Orleans Mask A couple years ago my husband, daughter, and I traveled to New Orleans for my best friend’s birthday. During this trip we took mystery and history tours, had amazing food experiences, and took in some of the best people watching and music listening experiences we could ask for. Just browsing in one of the many cute little shops to be discovered there, we found this mask for our daughter that not only represented the music background of the city, but the tradition of masked balls and parades for Mardi Gras.
This December I’m going back to New Orleans for a holiday, where I’m sure I will find another great souvenir from this amazing destination. Looking to do something to get yourself in the holiday spirit? OR just a chance to enjoy New Orleans? LEGACY
A Legacy of Being "Ordinary" “I’m not special-I don’t stand out. I’m just a God fearing ordinary American citizen…For God and Country”. These are the humble words spoken from Bob Boffa
Born in Providence, RI, 65-yearold Bob and his wife Bobbi recently moved to Deland after retiring from Alabama. Married 47 wonderful years, “still buddies, we sleep holding hands every night. Without her, I don’t know what would happen.” Bob and Bobbi were blessed with one biological daughter Cathy, now 44. The Boffa’s are caring, faith-filled and loving people that felt they could better enrich their own lives by helping to enrich the lives of others. Each having a special love of kids, together they agreed they should become

By Kim Denoff adoptive parents. Soon after registering for adoption, they got a call. There was a 2 ½-year-old boy with special needs, Chris. They were told he would require a lifetime commitment as he would never be able to care for his self. Bob and Bobbi turned this into a challenge. They taught the kids to never use the words, “I can’t”. Instead, they empowered them to be thankful for the gifts God gave them. As for Chris, they prayed for him that they could love and help him enough so that one day he could be more able-bodied or, ordinary. They filled him with encouragement to work on the things he could do, not on those things people said he would never be able to do. Soon, they received another call. “The lady called and said, ‘I’ve got three for you’”. Two twin girls and one boy that were biological siblings. They had been in “the system” for a while. Bob and Bobbi were so excited to offer stability and family to these deserving kids. He recalled the day they went to pick them up. They went to Walmart and bought baby dolls to take to them. He remembered them saying they didn’t care what condition they were in emotionally, physically, their race, nothing mattered but the fact that they were going to love them through cont. pg 10

10 Ways to Honor Seniors on National Seniors Day
I
n 1988, former President Ronald Reagan had a vision for getting everyone involved to honor our seniors who have given us so much. "Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That remains true today and gives us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land," Reagan proclaimed. "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older -- places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity." Looking for ways to celebrate a senior in your life…or perhaps a senior someone you don’t even know? This article is written for seniors and the friends, family and community that surrounds them. Here are few ideas:
1. Take time to connect by phone.
Whether you live nearby or far away, the opportunity to pick up the phone and call is nearly always there to some degree. With a hearing challenge hearing aid
compatible phones or other devices and services can help. With our busy lives, it is easy to lose track of time and forget to take time to say “hello.” This simple act is a powerful personal way of both saying and showing that you care. When possible using Face Time, Skype, Zoom or other technologies can bridge the gap allowing for an even more interactive connection.
2. Sharing a meal together feeds
the body and the soul, with an often much needed boost to morale. There are a multitude of benefits to eating with others including improved nutritional status and even cognition.
3. Spend time and take care to be
fully present. When seniors retire and no longer have their work social schedule, or they’ve lost their spouse and some friends it can create a feeling of loneliness and even lead to health decline. Visiting elderly loved ones creates precious time and purpose, as relationships are key to healthy aging. Listen intently to the senior’s words as they come from a place with many decades of experience. The conversation can be beneficial everyone.
4. Ask for advice. It is not un-
common, that only as we ourselves age, that we have a greater appreciation of the fact that our elders are some of the wisest people. Seniors have a lot to contribute through the depth and breadth of their life experiences.
AUGUST 2018 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP This includes the joy, the pain and suffering as well as the triumphs and the failings as it all matters.
5. It is said that discussing the
family heritage and documenting the family history translates into stronger family bonds and life successes. It also provides information about health and family genetics, personalities and other influences. Putting together an oral family history can bring family members together and strengthen the ties between generations. Studies have shown that children who have more knowledge of their family history tend to show greater emotional resilience. Resilience is a measure of how we face challenges and stress and a stronger sense of where we come from and who we are strengthens this. Aaron Holt of the National Archives and Records Administration adds that “it only takes three generations to lose a piece of oral family history.” To avoid losing those precious family stories passed down through the generations, Holt continued, the story “must be purposely and accurately repeated over and over again through the generations to be preserved.”
6. Even though it is said that “ac-
tions speak louder than words” it cont. pg 13 | 12 |
is important to speak how much we appreciate and respect the seniors in our life. Compliments and giving people purpose is a universally positive message. If a senior (or anyone) has positively impacted you, take time to share this and affirm their role in your life.
7. Visit a senior living communi-
ty. Whether your loved one lives there or not, you communicate that you care and provide purpose through the social interaction.
8. Volunteering at a senior cen-
ter brightens the day for everyone. It is difficult, if not impossible, to give freely of your time to those in need and not be blessed in the process.
9. Research if there are volun-
teer opportunities for willing and
capable seniors at an institution of learning and help make the necessary connections to fulfill the desire to impact the lives of children in some needed capacity.
• What are you most proud of? • What did you think life would be like when you were older? • What was the happiest moment of your life? • What were your grandparents and parents like? • Who has been the most important person in your life? So which of these ten ideas is of interest to you? While you decide don’t forget to check for special discounts and promotions that may be offered at stores and restaurants in your area. Celebrating you on this day and always!
10.Lastly, consider recording the
stories and wisdom of our seniors to preserve for future generations. My children completed a hardcover book filled with questions and learned so much about their grandparents in the process. It was indeed precious time. Senior blogger, Jennifer Wegerer shared these questions to inspire conversation in her December 2016 post: • How has being a parent or grandparent changed you? • How would you like to be remembered? • What advice do you have for young couples? • What advice would you give about raising children?

Finding the Holy Grail of Aging: Happy and Secure Millions of Americans are facing old age essentially alone. Some may be in a relationship where chronic illness has struck both partners simultaneously. Many children live too far away or lack the resources to offer a parent meaningful help. But there is no reason why circumstances like these should bar anyone from a quality old age. It just takes planning, which is where this empowering book comes in. Although written in 2009, The Complete Eldercare Planner, by Joy Loverde, is a book that offers emotional and practical advice. First, it addresses psychological barri-
ers to planning. Growing old and needing care is something most people don’t plan for. Near the top of the list are getting one’s legal affairs in order, including consulting with an elder care attorney. For finances, Loverde suggests ways to create an income stream, save money, and lists job possibilities. Portions present ideas and resources for successfully aging in place alone, exploring housing options both in the U.S. and abroad, coping with widowhood, “foraging for a family,” staying connected with those you know, making new friends, and evaluating medical providers. Finally, strategies for coping when old age becomes seriously challenging due to “the game changer” of chronic illness with advice about how to effectively ad-

vocate for yourself or find a professional to advocate for you. Loverde provides names of organizations. Each chapter ends with a recommended book, YouTube video, movie, song and TED Talk on that chapter’s topic. Near the end Loverde includes a multipage goldmine of useful websites. This two books, available on Amazon, are essential reading for anyone who wants to lay the groundwork for the best possible old age. Scott A. Selis is the 2016 Elder Law Attorney of the Year with offices in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. He serves on the Legislative and Medicaid Committees of the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section.

Helpful Tips for Traveling with your Mobility Product Summer travel season is in full swing and many people are venturing to new places, to create new memories. Taking along your scooter or power chair can make your travel experience even better! Before you head out, take a moment to consider these helpful tips: • Getting There - While there are many destinations domestic and abroad that are accessible, it is a good idea to plan out your routes whenever possible. Google has created a new tool that shows wheelchair-accessible routes via public transportation in most major cities. Riding with Amtrak can be a great adventure! INSIDE ADVISOR
VITAS’ Best Friend: Paw Pals® Know Just How to Visit a Hospice Patient Seniors who are pet owners enjoy less isolation and loneliness, are typically more active, weigh less and visit doctors less frequently than non-owners. Pet ownership has also been linked to lower blood pressure, higher levels of relaxation hormones and stronger immune systems. The positive effects of bonding benefit the animals, too, through increased socialization. Even military veterans returning home from duty have been found to benefit by working with shelter dogs to provide obedience training. VITAS Healthcare has offered a Paw Pals program for several
decades. Usually that pet is a dog, but other animals, including cats, birds, snakes and miniature ponies, have joined as volunteer companions. Because hospice care is comfort care, VITAS screens all potential animals and provides volunteer training to owners before they begin visiting patients in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and private homes. Ideal Paw Pal pets have no expectations and aren’t looking for anything. If the patient wants to talk, they want to listen. If the patient wants to pet them, they relax and enjoy it.
By Shanda Nobles-Miltor, VITAS Healthcare Senior General Manager In return, they bring the ultimate comfort care to a patient near the end of life. Even in patients who are no longer able to speak or carry on a conversation, VITAS Paw Pals elicit smiles and emotions that seem to arise from long-lost places and times. Methods to Perform a Backup
Over the past few months, I have given conducted a series of seminars that address some of the issues that seniors are bit ‘fuzzy’ about. Not to my surprise backing up files is near the top of the list. To be honest, backing up is relatively simple, in Windows 10 you select Settings Update and Security Backup the ‘Add’ your backup device and go! Backing Up can take a fair amount of time so sit back and relax. If it is so easy, why the article? Well, as with most things you do you have to a plan, and that plan requires some thought as to how you proceed. It’s not as easy a ‘point and shoot.’

The most important fact to understand is that a backup is a ‘picture in time’ of your drive! So, if you do a full backup the first day of the month then do a full restore the last day of the month, you will lose any data accumulated in-between! There are three (3) methods that you can use to accomplish a backup that fits your need.
Method 1
Step 1: Using Windows 10 Backup (as described above). Once you add external drive, you need to decide a few things, (1) – Backup now or later, (2) – What folders you want to ‘include’ and ‘exclude’ from the backup, (3) – How long do you want to keep your past backups and (4) – Backup to a different drive. Step 2: To restore your backup take a bit of knowledge on how to set up your File History for the first time (a bit more complex to be covered here).
Method 2:
You can use ‘copy and paste’ to move individual files and/or folders to an external drive and paste them there. This method is by far the simplest way! The only problem with this is that you have to remember to do it and be extra careful you do not ‘overwrite’ any files with the same name – however, Windows will compare ‘liked’ name files and asked what you
AUGUST 2018 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
By Christopher Theodore want to do such as keep, rename or delete them. Be aware that pictures are the worse; they save files with the name ‘image####’ – if you do not rename them the above problem arises.
Method 3
Use a service such as Carbonite to do the entire process for you! They will work with you on how and when to schedule your backups, what files and folders you want to include and exclude. They also offer a wide variety of restore options and will guide you through the entire process with excellent ‘hand holding’ However, this is not a free service, and prices vary according to what plan you select. Also, your backups will also are encrypted for your security. The method you select is up to you, but for seniors, Method 3 is the best! If you need any further help, give us a call, and I’ll be happy to speak with you. Safe, Effective, Painless Solution to Erectile Dysfunction. The Doctors at Alpha Medical Group Offer a Safe, Effective, Painless Solution to Erectile Dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction (ED) can interfere significantly with a couple’s intimacy—not to mention the toll it takes on a man’s mental and emotional health. Until now, men have had few options that work well, and many of those options can be painful. A medical breakthrough, The SwissWave Protocol at Alpha Medical Group, has proven to be the holy grail of ED treatment: a painless, no-needle procedure that actually works. The SwissWave Protocol uses electromagnetic acoustical pulsed energy waves to open existing blood vessels, grow new blood vessels, and stimulate the growth of new erectile tissue in the penis. The FDA registered device for the treatment of soft tissue repair was
developed in Switzerland and is widely used throughout Europe and Canada.
Essentially, it allows sound waves to fix the physical problem. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. The huge stack of scientific studies backing the innovation all agree: it works. A double-blind study pub-
lished in the journal, Therapeutic Advances in Urology, found that wave therapy delivered a significant clinical improvement of erectile function without any adverse effects. An article in Urology Times, an important resource for urologists, concluded that wave therapy has been tested extensively through randomized, placebo-controlled, and open-label studies in clinics worldwide. It concluded that the technology had demonstrated “impressive efficacy and safety.” Unfortunately, it’s estimated that one in four men over 35 have had issues with ED—and the percentage rises quickly as men age, with the vast majority experiencing such issues by the time they’re seniors. Most men turn to pills at the first sign of ED. Despite what the commercials would have you believe, they don’t work for a sig-

nificant number of men who have ED problems and eventually stop working in those who have initial success with them. The reality is that an estimated 70 percent of all men don’t respond to popular pills like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. Some get a partial erection, but that doesn’t allow for full sexual activity. And don’t forget the dangerous side effects and drug interactions associated with those pills, which prevent many guys from taking them at all. This leaves only two other viable medical options: an injection or a surgical implant. The choice is essentially to stick a needle into your penis before every sexual encounter or undergo surgery on the penis—with the possibility of serious complications and frequent failure rates. Unlike other treatments, The SwissWave Protocol at Alpha Medical Group threats the actual cause of the problem and not just the symptoms. The technology, which originated from Switzerland’s noted precision experts, has been used successfully in Europe for years and has been put to the test via comprehensive clinical trials. As a result, low intensity acoustical wave therapy has been officially accepted by the European Association of Urology (EAU) as the “Gold Standard for Treatment of ED.” Education Provided by: Alpha Medical Group, 515 Palm Coast Pkwy SW Ste 5, Palm Coast, FL 32137, Ph: 386-276-3075 www.AlphaMedicalGroup.com

A Day to Celebrate!
National Senior Citizen Day is August 21 We can thank President Ronald Reagan for declaring August 21 National Senior Citizen Day. The purpose of the holiday is for all of us to give back to the seniors who have given to us so generously. Like any day that recognizes a particular group of people – Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparents Day – National Senior Citizen Day is a day to say thank you, show respect and love, and pay tribute to all that seniors bring to our quality of life. What would our country be without seniors? For starters, of course, we’d have no grandchildren and no greatgrandchildren. We’d have 21 million fewer volunteers helping in their communities (at a value of more than $75 billion, no less!). We’d have a less vibrant
workforce, too: nearly 20 percent of people 65 or older work at least part-time. We’d lose access to harrowing war stories and legendary lessons if seniors couldn’t share them. We’d miss out on sage advice and more than a few decadent desserts. And, that’s just for starters! All of this is to say…take a moment to appreciate senior citizens this August 21. If you’re looking for ideas on how to spend the day and honor our seniors, here are a few: 1. Visit a retirement center or nursing home. Bring your guitar, a game, or two listening ears. You’ll probably make someone’s day. 2. Call your aging loved ones. Most of us don’t call enough (ironically, seniors are better at this than most, too!) Has it been a while since
AUGUST 2018 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
By Vickie Pleus you spoke to an older relative? Drop a line and pick up a smile. 3. Start a family history project. Ask your senior loved ones for their stories, record them, put them in the family archives and share them. What a wonderful opportunity to preserve stories and wisdom. 4. Connect online. According to Pew Research Center, six in 10 seniors go online. Skype (video call) and connect. Chatting face to face online is a beautiful invention that’s sure to lessen the miles between the two of you. This year, don’t let August 21 slip away as a typical summer Tuesday. Do something special for the seniors in your life or community. Happy National Senior Citizen Day!

QUICK TIPS
Keeping it Cool
Air Conditioning Tips for the Summer Months
By Joel Chapman Knights Air Conditioning Service, Inc. - 386-456-0592
1. Change your filter regularly, before it gets clogged. Use a 90 day, pleated filter that cost about $5-$6. The cheap see through 30 day filters are okay in an emergency, but prolonged use will allow too much debris to pass through and dirty your evaporator coil. On the other extreme the expensive $25 filters restrict too much airflow. 2. No matter how long the filter you purchase is rated for, keep in mind that is a maximum based on ideal conditions. If you have furry pets in your home the filter may need to be change more frequently. Check your filter every month and once it’s dirty change it, filters are cheap, having your coil cleaned is not. 3. One of the functions of your air conditioner is to remove humidity from your home. Your air conditioner can produce gallons of condensation per day. Many people used to put bleach down their drain line, but this is frowned upon by air conditioning manufacturers because bleach is corrosive and can pull fumes into your home. A better option is a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and hot water poured down the drain line once a month during the summer. 4. If your drain line does become clogged, the best way to clear it is with a Shop-Vac. The drain line usually comes out of your home next to the outside condenser, it’s either a black polyurethane or a white PVC pipe. Attach the wet/dry vacuum to the pipe and after about a minute of suction the clog should be cleared. 5. Your outdoor condenser needs to be able to breath freely. Make sure there are no weeds or vines growing up the side of the unit. Keep the bushes and grass cut back to allow for proper airflow. Make sure to shut off your air conditioner while you are mowing or weed eating around it. This will help ensure that lawn trimmings don't get sucked into your coil and block the airflow. 6. A question that I am frequently asked is what is the best temperature to set the air conditioner. The most energy efficient temperature to set the thermostat to is 78 degrees. However, you probably paid about $4,000 for an air conditioner to be comfortable and that comfortable temperature is unique to each person. I personally don't mind the extra $20 on my electric bill and usually set mine to 76-77 degrees.

Planning Ahead
for Your Loved One with Special Needs
F
lorida continues to lead the nation as the number one retirement state. But did you know many active aging retirees come to Florida because it’s easier to care for their aging child or sibling with a development disability? “We moved here from Georgia because it was the best residential care and day training we could find for our son,” said Ruby Helton. Aging caregivers have turned to Duvall Homes since 1945 as they plan ahead for their own care and their aging dependent with special needs – both who are living longer. With Duvall being a short, scenic drive from The Villages, John Knox Village of Central Florida, Daytona’s new Latitude Margaritaville and numerous other retirement communities, more families are taking advantage of the programs and services at Duvall’s 16 group homes and day training center. Learn more at DuvallHomes.org. For state funding eligibility, contact Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities at APD.MyFlorida.org.

Shelby's Tasty Coleslaw
Prep time 15 minutes Serves 8-10
1 2 1 ½ 2 1 1
head of green cabbage (Can use ¾ green and ¼ purple) large carrots cup mayonnaise (Duke's) cup sugar tsp red wine vinegar tsp yellow mustard tsp ground celery seed Photo Credit: https://www.the-girl-who-ate-everything.com/apple-coleslaw/
We all love this coleslaw recipe. For a fast side to a barbecue or a take along dish, you can't beat it. You can even use the prepackaged coleslaw mix if you are in a hurry or don't have a food processor. Mona likes the apples, so that is how we usually have it when she comes over.
DIRECTIONS:
Serves a crowd. Just right for pot luck or a small barbecue. Cut carrots cabbage into chunks and pulse in food processor to desired consistency. I like mine pretty fine. Mix remaining ingredients and pour over cabbage/carrot mixture and mix well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
ALTERNATIVES: Decrease sugar to ¼ cup and add 2 apples cut up fine for some extra crunch. Add raisins and walnuts, or blue cheese crumbles.
