Happy New Year

T

his is the time of year when we take knowledge from last years’ experience and make the necessary changes for the New Year. Won’t you join us? Together we can make a difference one person at a time.

Here are Legacy’s Magazine’s Top 5 New Year’s Resolutions 1. Use our heart and reach out to someone each day. To let them know we care. 2. To cultivate more patience for everyone. We don’t always know someone’s story or what they are going through at the moment. 3. For-GIVE-ness. To give more. Forgiveness is a release for the giver as well as the one being forgiven. One does not even have to be in contact with the one they are forgiving. It is a personal thing to do that will make your day better. 4. Make a conscious effort to drink more water. Water is so important to the organs. Dehydration is the cause of many issues and is an easy fix. 5. Let’s resolve to eat something healthy each day and try something new. In this issue, our travel expert shares with us on how to start the New Year with a New Attitude and a New Adventure. Be inspired by our Living Legacy feature story, Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Living with a 68-year young fitness instructor. Inside is a few of the tools and tips for sticking to your New Year's Resolutions and some sensible advice for your computer...is it time for a new one? Plus, valuable insight on caregiver stress and how to take care of yourself and the importance of support groups. We look forward to a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

This is why you see so many of us go on diets, spending or saving regimes, and self-improvement paths. In all these changes, it is a great time to incorporate new adventures. LEGACY

Inspiring Seniors: Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Walking through the crowded gym, you hear the clanking of weights and the hum of upbeat music in the background. As I approach the yoga room, I meet this petite, muscular framed woman that has the biggest smile on her

her face, as she says, “goodbye” to all of the students that attended her class. Moments after her class ended, you see a few women standing outside the room waiting for their instructor to gather her things and to personally thank her for a great class. Without a doubt, there is a certain powerful magnetism about Debra as soon as you meet her. A unique mixture of true kindness,

sprinkled with an authentic sense of gentle understanding coupled with this underlying yet firm, ‘no nonsense’ discipline that emanates from her. We all know that type of discipline. Discipline that won’t tolerate any illegitimate excuses because in her eyes, that’s a waste of time and one thing is for sure, she makes the most of her time. Make no mistake she knows struggle from being a single mother who raised 3 boys, Steve, 50, Alan 49 and Jaiye 45. Debra Richardson, 68, has a close connection with the Lord and feels that purposefully she was given physical issues to overcome as to teach others how they can overcome their physical issues within themselves. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised to open the dictionary to look up the word ‘fitness’ and see her big smiling face there. Debra admits that she is yoga personified. Debra’s husband John, of 15 years, does yoga every morning when he gets out of bed since in his twenties. Admiringly, she says, “He’s amazing! Plus, he can do many postures that I cannot.” When you attend one of her classes, she teaches from a standpoint of basic “lack of knowl-

By Chris Jones edge.” Meaning ‘lack of what your mind’ tells you that you can do. She states, “I teach from the vantage point to what the Creator has done for you already. We have within our bodies the ability to heal ourselves. We also have to excite that healing process. That does not happen by sitting still. It only happens through motion. We are poseable action figures. The more we sit, the more we stiffen; to where movement becomes painful and difficult. The more we move, the more we increase circulation and the more it becomes easier for the body to move. Hydration paired with movement is key. We try to not be the walking dead; we try to be the walking living.” Debra began teaching yoga in her forties. Prior to that, she was a strength training and aerobics instructor. Commenting on the benefits, she says, “Yoga helps the body age less painfully.” It all began when she he met a woman that was teaching a yoga class in in the same law firm that she was teaching strength training. She enjoyed it so much and became very good and excited about it that her instructor recommended that she teach it herself. An epiphany came to her throughout the beginning of learning yoga and she then realized that she was cont. pg 12

missing a crucial component to her fitness process, stretching. With all of the working out and building muscle, she was shortening her muscles by not stretching. “A fitness stool has three components. If the stool misses any legs, it collapses." The three legs are aerobic activity, strength

change what is going on inside our body. The biggest crime is for us to think that only our Doctors can fix our bodies. Yes, we want our Doctors to help us monitor, but in all reality we are responsible for how fit we stay. It is our responsibility.” Giggling to herself at the thought of what she is about to say next, Debra says,” We don’t become a couch potato, if we don’t move; we become a couch mashed potato. Get it? Mashed.” She says people confuse retirement as “stopping.” “What retirement really should be is redirection.” Basically, what she is saying is that we have this smart brain to create a new healthy body to bring our bodies into balance. “Now we seniors have all this ‘full time’ to bring our bodies back in line, to have them be the bodies that we want them to be as we age; so we can enjoy our new life, enjoy the

travel and enjoy the grandchildren. We have more time than ever before and how effectively are we going to use that time?” When she hears that someone has retired, she tells them, “Now your full time job is getting your body back in shape to be able to live the life you want to live.” With her contagious attitude, she emits this unspoken presence of, ‘I know how to show you how you can do it for yourself’ conviction. She has had people get up and leave from her class and it breaks her heart. “Just stay with it”, she says. One woman in particular who came to one of her classes left because it was too hard. Her Doctor said to stay with him until her insurance ran out and then eventually when it did, she found her way back to Debra. Inspired yet? Where do you find Debra? Debra teaches and has been teaching at LA Fitness since 2013. She teaches in Orange City, FL 3X a week and teaches 2X a week in Lake Mary, FL. Even at 68 years old, she teaches 5 days a week every week. Debra is appropriately dubbed the ‘go to’ instructor who can teach EVERY

training and stretching. She was shortening her muscle. Muscle needs length to contract and function. Stretching accommodates that process of healthy formation. Over the years she has heard that some people may reject yoga because many pastors or preachers preach against it because they say it is a religion. “Instead, this portion of yoga that we are doing is used to help redeem the body”, remarks Debra. Debra’s knowledge in fitness is complete and her Sakowitz Eye Center is a multi-specialty eye center providing comprehensive medical and surgical eye care. yoga instruction is clearly explained in her classes • Cataract Surgery • Advanced Multifocal Implants • High Performance LASIK • Glaucoma Treatment & Surgery that it is safe to assume that • Corneal Transplants • Retinal Laser Surgery • Macula Degeneration Treatment • Comprehensive Eye Examinations her blood type is actually “yoga”. “The biggest problem we seniors face is the belief is that we think the Eric A. class except Zumba. Laughing out loud she asks me, “Do you know how old I was when I got my first gym membership? I was 35. It took me two years to actually use it.” Because of many years of fitness experience, she considers the different background and situations and to her, it doesn’t matter how old you are, or your shape, the fact that you stay with it is the most important. She

works hard at being attentive to the needs of her class. She intimately knows how hard it is to get started. Her wisdom is, “You must feed yourself, so that you are fit food for everybody else." Inquiring about her early careers, she was first a telephone operator and for 22 years, she repaired Xerox copy machines. She

finds that career to be a metaphor for what she does today. She says, “Copy machines they are manmade and that they are made to break down. Our body is made by a perfect Creator and that it is not meant to break down where a copier is made by an imperfect being is and made to break down.” With her contagious, uplifting attitude Debra walks, talks and teaches all about finding and using personal power. She tries to help get into the heads of her students to inspire, to uplift and to help people understand how their body operates. Many students struggle in the beginning with following the directions of the yoga instructor. “Activating that part of the brain is all a part of the process to slow down and focus.” As far as nutrition goes, she admits she is a real person with food. Making a habit of cutting your meal in half, due to fact that, the portions in restaurants are so large, is a better choice and that you can create two meals. Also, she recommends cooking your own food because it is fresher, you know what’s in it and it is an activity that keeps you moving.

On an average day, Debra she gets up to feed dogs, sits with her hubby to catch up on current events and leaves the hou bye quarter of nine to go teach three classes at LA Fitness. Debra’s Living Legacy is one of which she deeply and genuinely wants people to see, is what is possible. She expresses, “The last generation did not do well for us to show us what aging looks like or can look like. Sure, there were a few famous people like Raquel Welch and Tina Turner, and Eartha Kitt who made aging look good. And of course, the World’s Fittest Grandma Body Builder Ernestine Shepard, in the Guinness book of world records. They are not genetic anomalies; they worked hard to stay in shape.” She will ask you, “Can you do 500 ab situps in a day? One day at a time and we will get you there.” Maybe not right away for most of us, but I have a good feeling, that with Debra in your corner, you better believe that we can indeed achieve it. Pausing for a personal moment of reflection, she says,” I am not genetic anomaly. I am a normal person just like you. We are all possible Olympians. The only difference between us is dedication, consistency and faith.” Have you considered what your legacy will be? Does your family share a famous or meaningful legacy? Please share it with us so we can enrich the lives of others with this gift. LIVING WELL BRANCH

What is on Your Mind?

Tomorrow Changes Today!

I

love that this time of year often puts the idea of “making changes for the better” related to our health and wellness more of a priority. It is an exciting time as a new vision for the coming months is being created. Perhaps you have already thought about your ideas for this year. Have you been able to move forward with the plans you made at the beginning of last year? If you have not, please know you are not alone. Did you know that reportedly 90% of resolutions don’t last beyond mid-January? Eating better, exercising and taking better self-care, which includes adequate sleep, top the list of goals. These are excellent goals that are foundational to good health. Spending less money and minimizing stress are also identified in the top ten. Why is it often so challenging to follow through with things we know are good for us? I have noticed over the years that when there is the enough investment in the “discovery of what is important phase”, clients experience greater success with the outcome they desire. Here is a brief sampling of the questions I use in the “discovery phase”: What is on your mind and heart today regarding your overall health and wellness? What are your thoughts about where you are and where you would like to be in each one of these dimensions of wellness? Which one would you be open to exploring first?

Which areas are you thinking you might like to make changes? One helpful self-assessment tool is the Wellness Wheel (Dr. Sears Wellness Institute) which provides a wonderful springboard for conversation and identification of what is important to the client. It identifies strengths

that are already present and a framework for looking at areas of opportunity for change. Further conversation helps focus in on the specific areas of importance. In the dimension of health, for example, this could include keeping your memory sharp, getting enough fruits and vegetables, decreasing a salt or sugar habit, determining and moving toward a healthy weight, exploring opportunities for strengthening relationships, improving cardiovascular status, minimizing a fall risk, developing a regular pattern of movement or exercise,

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP supporting a healthy digestive system or immune function to name a few. Progress in any one of these areas will have profound influences on health, not to mention serving as a catalyst for doing even more. Short term, objective and measurable goals to focus on for the next 2 weeks can be a great place to start. Follow-up during this time, as identified by the client, is essential to building trust. If 90% of people who set New Year’s resolutions reportedly quit or don’t make the progress they would like by mid-month, how can we expect stay motivated? I have found that taking the time to explore the dimensions of health with a qualified coach or practitioner, as described earlier, results in greater understanding of the “why” of the goal. This includes exploring the consequences, both good and not so good. One way to begin the process and stay motivated is to ask yourself thought-provoking questions. Making progress with goals and a vision for this new year might have less to do with knowing what to do and more to do with staying motivated to move forward. Brian Tracy, who is a well-known thought leader on the topic of motivation offers these powerful questions to “help us learn more about ourselves, re| 14 |

mind us of our purpose, what we really want out of our goals, and what obstacles we need to overcome to achieve them.” Consider asking yourself these questions daily or anytime you need a boost of motivation. Tracy suggests that you write them down, share with a trusted friend or ponder them in a quiet place. It’s important to be totally honest with yourself as well. I know that I tend to answer questions like these with a lean toward the direction I want to move, instead of where I actually am. It is helpful to know that there are no right or wrong answers. I have adapted the original list for use in my practice. Here are a few to get started. • What do I want most in life? • What am I grateful for? • Why do I want to achieve my goal?

• How would I feel inside if I achieved my goal today? • What would the consequences be if I don’t achieve my goal? • What stops me from being motivated and how can I overcome these obstacles? • Who can support me? • What am I most fearful of? • If I didn’t have much time left, how would I plan to live my life? • What would I regret not doing in my life? • What inspires me in life? • Who do I look up to and why? • What do I like about myself? • What habits do I want to change? • Where do I want to be ___ months or years from now? • On a scale of 1-10, with 0 meaning, “I am not sure or confident at all”, and 10 mean-

ing, “I am sure and confident I will be able to accomplish my plan”; how committed am I to the promises I made to myself? What we want tomorrow changes today. This truth, that I first learned from Tommy Newberry, was life-changing. Serving in the health care arena for all these years has provided such a testimony to the power of our choices, including our mindset, and the opportunities we have each day, regardless of age, stage of life or condition. There is hope in our vision for tomorrow. Will you take the time to explore and cast your personal vision starting with your “why”? Which skills will you need to develop? What strengths and supports will you tap into today to fuel that vision? How may I help?

COMPUTER BRANCH

Digital Technology

A New Year and a New Computer? If you received a new computer as a gift lately then you are off to a good start for the New Year. If you did not, then it is time to have a look at the one you have and consider giving it a good cleaning. Let’s address some of the issues you may run into with a new computer. It is most likely full of ‘Bloatware’ (software you probably don’t want or need). Software manufactures contract with computer manufacturers to add their software to the original system. It may not seem like an issue at first, but over time (like Cholesterol), it can ‘clog’ the system up. I have seen many systems slow down over time because of unwanted programs that were originally installed with the new system. All computers collect ‘junk’ with every use, this problem compounds over the first few months and only gets worse. Now let’s address cleaning up your existing system so you can get your system back up to ‘snuff’ and enjoy all computers have to offer. As I said above, "computers collect junk with every use." Well, they do it over and over, but the real problem is knowing what is and is not junk. There are software programs specifically designed to remove ‘junk’ and other programs fix items that might be slowing your system down. Well -designed software that will not

only fix a bunch of issues but will also notify you that your system needs attention. As you can see, a new and ‘in use’ system may suffer from many of the same issues. No matter how you look at it, there is no getting around these issues, and we have not even addressed virus and malware issues (I will discuss this issue specifically in upcoming articles). In short, you may not need a ‘new system’ only a good, deep cleaning. On the other hand, your new system may need cleaning as well. The key here is to obtain reliable software that not only does its job but monitors your system and notifies you when it needs to be cleaned. So, what does all this cost? On the average, anywhere from $35.00 to $65.00 (this price should include the software license for one year and installation and sup-

port as well). There should be a reasonable turnaround time for this , 3 or 4-days at the most. One last thing, before you purchase any software make entirely sure you understand how to set it up and what it can and cannot do. I have seen many people install this type of software and only use 15% of the program. Remember, if the software does not alert you when to run it then for most users it’s not living up to its job. You can always contact us to help guide you through these processes from start to finish and any other issue you may have. Round-the-Clock Hospice Care Keeps Patients and Families at Home—And out of the Hospital Family members who provide hospice care to a loved one at home can experience emotions and encounters that range from immensely satisfying to intensely scary. When a hospice patient takes a turn for the worse at home— struggles to breathe, experiences sudden pain, loses consciousness, becomes agitated, or battles chronic nausea, vomiting or diarrhea—VITAS® Healthcare can bring a nurse or aide directly to the bedside, when medically necessary, for temporary shifts up to 24 hours a day until symptoms resolve. It’s called Intensive Comfort Care® (ICC), one of the four levels of hospice care mandated by the Medicare hospice benefit and

provided wherever the patient calls home: private residence, nursing home or care facility. ICC manages symptoms, relieves pain and keeps hospice patients out of hospitals and emergency rooms. ICC supports hospice’s focus on quality of life ICC also can help patients with complex or challenging diagnoses, such as a patient suffering from both heart disease and diabetes. High-acuity patients often require special levels of care or interventions that other hospice programs are not equipped or able to provide. Even if complex modalities do not treat the underlying terminal disease, they can provide comfort care near the end of life—intrave-

tia, this article is also about you, the caregiver. I believe it is important to learn from a caregiver who has been through the good and the trying times. That’s why I can write to you about caregiver stress. I have been through the good times and the struggles in caring for those with dementia. I worked as a Registered Nurse for many years and cared for those with dementia within a professional setting. But my real education came when my husband and I had the opportunity to get first hand training by caring for two ladies with dementia in our

With the ladies we cared for, we didn’t ask them if they wanted to go out to eat or to get ice cream. We made the outing sound exciting and just moved forward. Before they knew it, they were eating their ice cream and enjoying themselves. I can relate to 24/7 caregivers in some of the more challenging times. Only through the experience of 24/7 caregiving could I appreciate the true meaning of commitment. Being responsible for personal care, safety, nutrition, and behavior management can take a physical and mental toll on caregivers. Sometimes caregivers may feel guilty for being short on patience or for verbalizing frustrations. It seems to help knowing that others are experiencing some of the same feelings. It may be beneficial to join a caregiver support group and learn what others are doing to cope with these stressful situations. After specializing in Memory Care, I had the opportunity to teach family members and caregivers how to motivate the person with exercise and activities. When you look at the way we sometimes view the older population, it’s almost like we put them in the “too old to enjoy life” group. But they are still able to participate and enjoy activities. They may have to participate in a different way because of physical or mental limitations, but they need to stay active in some way. It is our job as caregivers to stimulate the feelings that have been hidden away or forgotten. When they become more satisfied, our stress level is lessened. Everyone wins! Happy caregiving! | 22 |

Take a wide stance with your toes pointed outward. Squat down until your thighs are parallel with the ground. Press your knees outward to stretch your hips and inner thighs.

Tip: Do not round your lower back during this stretch. Although the focus here is on the inner thighs, it’s best if you can keep a tight core and straight spine. Make sure not to lift your heels off the ground, and keep the pressure evenly distributed through the heels and balls of your feet.

For the month of January 2019 – Esoteric Astrology is focused on the rising sign more than the sun sign (we suggest you read both) and provides clarity, direction and answers for those seeking a higher level of life.*

A TIME OF CAPRICORN

“The body is an instrument through which to express God.” Baird T. Spalding When the Sun entered Capricorn on December 21, 2018, it signified a heavy influence which will affect us all not only in 2019 but even more so by the time we get to 2020. Saturn entered Capricorn December, 2017 and will remain there until December, 2020. Pluto was already in Capricorn and will remain in that sign until 2024. By mid-year these two will be in a tight conjunction, very close to one another and adding to Capricorn’s inherent heaviness. In March 2019 Uranus enters Taurus and in December of 2019 Jupiter will join the Capricorn planets. Both Capricorn and Taurus are about the element Earth. These outer planets are called generational because they affect whole generations and cultures as opposed to the closer, ‘personal’ planets like Mercury, Venus, and Mars which affect us each on more personal levels. When we have a preponderance of Earthen outer planets it suggests a potentially heavy dose of materialism. Whole societies may decide that it is time they get theirs and revolt, even as we are seeing now in Europe. Capricorn especially is a sign of social, political and economic issues while Taurus is all about money. The year 2020 has always been considered an important year of change by esoteric scientists and this time of Capricorn will usher it in. Never has it been more important for all of us to respond to our Higher Lights. We have the opportunity to turn this Earth focus into a focus on saving our Earth instead of fighting over her resources as personal possessions. No matter the influence of the stars, as always, we have a choice.

Everyone: A partial solar eclipse on January 6 with both Sun and Moon in Capricorn and a total lunar eclipse on January 21 with Moon in Leo means big changes for everyone, including on the personal level. LIBRA SEPT 22 – OCT 22 Planet: Uranus Dynamic: Enjoy the fire of creation for another couple of months. Direction: Initiate something; the time will come later for follow through. Soul Thought: Maybe it’s time to BE outside of the box. SCORPIO OCT 22 – NOV 21 Planet: Mars Dynamic: Are you looking for a battle or defending yourself? Direction: It’s time for the spiritual warrior to come out. Soul Thought: How does a spiritual warrior do battle? SAGITTARIUS NOV 21 – DEC 20 Planet: Earth Dynamic: Both intuition and inspiration are strong this month. Direction: Soar high, soar free. Soul Thought: With the Eagle’s eye.

CAPRICORN DEC 20 – JAN 19 Planet: Saturn Dynamic: As the whole world shifts into this energy, we need you to be strong. Direction: AND Light. Soul Thought: “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.” The Hollies AQUARIUS JAN 19 – FEB 18 Planet: Jupiter Dynamic: It’s time to shoot for the stars. Direction: On behalf of all humanity. Soul Thought: What is your bow made of? PISCES FEB 18 – MARCH 20 Planet: Pluto Dynamic: You’ll be in this energy for a while. Direction: Work with transmuting heaviness into lightness. Soul Thought: It’s called alchemy. To discover your Rising Sign, or for more information, contact Charlene R. Johnson, www.SkyDanceAstrology.com, or email: SkyDance@SkyDanceAstrology.com

Best Classic Lasagna

Prep time 35 minutes, Bake 1 hour  Serves 10+

1 lb dry lasagna noodles 1 lb ground beef (optional) 1 lb ricotta cheese 1 lb shredded mozzarella cheese 1 cup parmesan cheese 2 eggs 2 cans or jars of spaghetti sauce (I like Hunts Traditional or Newman’s Sockarooni) 1 large, deep pan (I use half a turkey roaster)

January is a time of new beginnings. It is also a time for traditions. This traditional lasagna recipe was handed down to me from my Italian friends and family. It is great on a cold or dreary winter day and served with Italian bread, it just can't be beat!!

DIRECTIONS: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Prepare lasagna noodles as stated on box While noodles are boiling, brown beef into small crumbles In a large bowl, mix eggs into ricotta cheese Drain noodles and put back in pan and cover with cold water (this makes noodles cool enough to handle) Place a thin layer of sauce in the bottom of the pan Place a layer of noodles to cover bottom (shaking off excess water) Put another layer of sauce over noodles Spoon half ricotta mixture onto sauce and then half of mozzarella cheese Add ½ beef at this point Shake one third parmesan cheese next, covering all Add another layer of noodles and repeat above steps Finish off with a layer of noodles, sauce and parmesan Cover with foil and place in preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour Vent foil with holes cut onto top to let off steam Insert knife into center to check doneness. It should be hot and bubbly. Reduce heat to 325 degrees and cook a little longer if necessary Let sit 20 minutes before serving

ALTERNATIVE: Omit meat for a vegetarian dish Precooked spinach may be added in place of meat
