That’s powerful. Can you relate? If Michelangelo were living today, he’d probably say he’s a sculptor. He’d likely point you to his best-known marble works, Pietà and David, and you’d be transfixed by his skill and talent for carving. He may not even mention that he’d painted the Sistine Chapel – that priceless, influential fresco that graces a Vatican ceiling. In fact, Michelangelo had a lower opinion of painting than sculpture, and was, as the story goes, persuaded by a Pope to paint the Chapel. Do we assume that because Michelangelo didn’t love painting above all else, that he set a low priority on painting that holy space? Maybe he would have rather been sculpting, but he still gave the Sistine Chapel four years of backbreaking work; he gave it everything he had. There’s no comparable work anywhere on earth. What do you love to do? Do you have a favorite pastime, favorite people and favorite places? Do you have to force yourself to love those things? No, I’m betting you don’t. Doing what you love usually doesn’t require the same level of self-discipline as doing what you need to do, or what you have committed to do. It probably requires more effort…and more planning. Taking the time to plan and execute a task that’s not your favorite doesn’t mean it’s a waste. For example, planning your future by organizing your documents, getting your healthcare in line, knowing your insurance coverage, understanding your benefits…these are time well spent because they benefit you and those you love. Like chapel frescoes, they can affect generations. What if Michelangelo had told Pope Julius II he didn’t want to paint the Sistine Chapel? The world never would have seen the work that has inspired artists for centuries. What if you don’t take on the important task getting your documents in order? Your family will be lesser for it. Do the proactive planning work, and do it well. Aim high and be thorough. Not everything can be the Sistine Chapel, but setting a challenging goal will ensure you’ll always land higher than you thought you could. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

5 "Musts" for Your Senior Years
Proactive planning helps ensure a better future for you and your family
This is the second article in a three-part series about being proactive in planning for your future care. In the first part, we focused on the importance of this mindset. In this issue, we discuss tangible ways you can start making a plan or improve on the one you have.
R
emember planning for your first home purchase? There were a lot of things to consider, including size, location, features, proximity to family and friends, and cost. But even before that, you most likely spent months, if not years, saving for a down-payment and researching neighborhoods. So why do we often tend to be less proactive about planning for our elder years, where we’ll live, how we can live the best life possible, and who we will trust to help us achieve that? Probably because that level of planning can seem like a daunting task. But as we mentioned in our first article in this series, the best time to make decisions for yourself is when you have the
most independence in making them. Many people come to Aging Tree’s office for no-cost advice about a specific need, such as finding living options for a spouse or an aging parent who suddenly falls ill and needs constant supervision and health care. Other people are much more proactive and make an appointment to plan for their future. When we sit down with clients who are choosing to proactively make a plan for their future, we guide them in the following five areas. How prepared are you? Collateral documents When my 18-year-old daughter traveled overseas, she left a folder at home that included copies of

her passport and driver’s license, a list of all her immunizations and prescription medications, phone numbers of people in the organization she was traveling with, and her travel itinerary. Because she has allergies and takes preventative/rescue medications, she also provided copies of these important lists to her organization leaders. She knew that doing this could save a lot of trouble for others trying to communicate with family members if an issue with her health arose. She also knew that taking precautions by keeping companions informed could potentially save her life. At any age, but especially later in life, this type of preparation saves both you and your family unneeded stress and anxiety in the event you become ill or unable to care for yourself the way you may so easily today. As we all know, everything can change tomorrow. Perhaps you keep important papers, such as bills, deeds, and other paperwork in a drawer, filing cabinet or safety deposit box you can easily access. Yet, this paperwork also needs to be accessible to at least one trusted family member who may need to help you run your household and business affairs in the future. Copies can be provided to those you trust at any time and may include: • Birth and marriage certificates (certified copies) • Certified copy of death certificate of predeceased spouse (if a widow or widower) • Driver’s license/state-issued identification card • Social security card • Medicare card (A-B-D) • Health insurance card/Medicaid card • Military records • Car titles • Passwords to online accounts • Phone numbers/emails/addresses Two written documents that are imperative to have include a living will and a health care power of attorney. Legal First, a living will outlines your personal wishes as to your care should you become unable to advocate for yourself. Through a living will, you provide legal instructions ahead of time for your end-of-life care. Instructions may include your preferences for the use of mechanical ventilation, resuscitation, and pain management. Power of attorney, another type of “advance directive,” names a person who will serve as a proxy to make decisions for you. This person could be a spouse or other trusted family member or friend. Aging Tree can refer clients to trustworthy partners to help put this information together. Your advisor will refer you to an attorney if you need one. Seeking the expertise of an elder care attorney when choosing your power of at-
torney not only protects you but also the person you ask to serve in that role, which, according to Florida law, involves being required to protect your assets from things like long-term care expenses. Wealth management and insurance Unlike fine wine, wealth management and insurance coverage don’t automatically improve with age. It’s imperative to reassess both our investments and policies at least on an annual basis as we get older. Not only do you need to reassess your current investments, you also need to choose who will
help you manage your assets and how you can fund your senior care should the need arise. For instance, wealth management advisors can help you plan for how to pay for your senior care via vehicles such as reverse mortgages and trusts. Reverse mortgages, regulated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), are cash loans you can take against the equity of your home to help pay for senior care, long-term care insurance, or even care provided by family members. This type of loan is not the best option

for everyone, and talking with a HUD counselor is required before starting the loan process. Trusts, such as irrevocable trusts, are a common pre-planning strategy for Medicaid. Placing your assets in an irrevocable trust can protect them for a number of years while also maintaining your eligibility for Medicaid assistance. In regard to your medical insurance, you likely know your deductible and out-of-pocket expense. You may realize that Medicare doesn’t cover the long-term/ custodial care. But do you know if the coverage you have today will cover you later? For instance, if you are injured in a fall and need short-term care in a rehab facility, will your current policy cover that? Will it cover home health care once you’re out of rehab? Working with an Aging Tree-recommended financial professional and Medicare advisor will help ensure you understand your insurance options and find the best coverage at the lowest cost. Pharmacy review In general, simply having a list of your allergies (especially to medications), prescribed medications and their dosages, and any over-the-counter (OTC) vitamins and supplements is a proactive measure for anyone at any age to take. Sometimes people who start experiencing signs of dementia may actually be suffering from a prescription drug interaction. Some pharmacies even offer online tools that enable you to check for certain drug interactions yourself. For example, if | 10 |
you use a CVS pharmacy, you can create an online account that will quickly import your current prescribed medications and check for potential interactions. (You can also check for interactions manually on the CVS website or other websites like WebMD.) Ask your pharmacist to run a
diagnostic of your current prescriptions and supplements and provide you with printed copies. You can also request a copy of your prescriptions from all of your physicians. Having this information on hand is invaluable, for both you and a potential caregiver, and could save your life. Senior living options Remember the “first home” analogy? As much as we would like to think that leaving behind the cold of the Midwest and retiring to Florida is the last major housing transition we will make, that’s often not the case. As we age, the likelihood we will need additional help and health care, as well as a change in residence, increases dramatically. While people often and mistakenly make a huge leap in their minds from “can’t live alone anymore” to “nursing home,” there are a variety of living options in between. Common misconceptions still abound in regard to senior living. While nursing home
care is one such option, it can differ greatly from independent and assisted living options. Being proactive involves informing yourself about those options, shopping around for which facilities best suit your wants and needs, planning for covering the costs, and discussing your decisions with your family. [Read more about senior living options in our three-part series in the January, February, and March 2017 issues.] What’s your ideal living situation? Would you prefer--and can you afford--home health care? Would you prefer independent living, assisted living, or nursing home care depending on your medical needs and finances? Remember, too, that once you choose, you may have to reconsider your living later on depending on changes in your level of care or financial situation. Then, as now, there are people to continually provide guidance at every level of the decision making process. Tim Wagstaff, Community Relations Coordinator at Grand Villa of DeLand, explains how staff members at Grand Villa help potential residents and their families continue to be as proactive as possible. Some important aspects of senior living that he discusses with clients include care needs, assets, and medications. “When we meet with a family and establish their timeline, I always take into account the prospective resident’s care needs,” says Wagstaff. “One more fall can make the difference between re-

sort-style senior living or a skilled nursing environment.” Wagstaff also discusses aspects of senior living transitions such as decluttering before moving out of your current home and into an assisted living facility in order for the home to show better to potential buyers. [For more information, call Tim at (386) 738-5200, email: MKT.CRC.DLA@GrandVillaSenior.net or visit www.grandvilladeland.com.] Many people come to our Aging Tree office for guidance during high stress times. Not planning ahead for care in later years can result in emotional and financial stress when families are forced to decide too quickly on a caregiving solution. Making the best choice for senior living involves making the most informed choice–and sooner rather than later. According to an a 2015 AARP Public Policy report titled "Valuing the Invaluable,"* there were 7.2 potential family caregivers for every person 80 and older in 2010. However, within the next 15 years, that ratio is likely to fall to 4 to 1. By 2050, the ratio could plummet to 3 to 1. Those statistics serve to underline the growing need for people to plan ahead for their later lives. The best time to start being proactive is today. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Aging Tree or any of their approved Business Partners by calling 1-866-320-8803. *Source: http://www.aarp.org/ home-family/caregiving/info-2016/ caregiving-tips-when-aging-alone. html . | 11 |

Getting it right a.k.a. finding the right amount of stuff for this new adventure sounds a whole lot more pleasant to me than the alternative. Any mindset changes that we can apply here from the very start will be time well spent, because let’s face it, this is not an easy task. I have been part of this process on three occasions, most recently just last week, so the feelings and emotions are still very strong. Where are you on the clutter continuum? I have friends who have great skills in managing their clutter and others who hold onto every little piece of their family history. Wherever you are I want to offer a few insights into this rite of passage to minimize areas of conflict. This is especially important in our efforts to be proactive within our own families. Before we dive into the “how to’s”, let’s put a face on why clearing through the clutter can be so challenging and emotionally charged. of the Learning Channel’s Clean Sweep, offers that it is about “dealing with the fundamental issue of families and growth and loss and love”. He adds, “everything we own has power and letting go of anything we have seen or used or experienced as a child is hard because the memory embedded in the object has such power. We fear if we let go of the object, we’ll lose the memory.” I have one more concept to share that will help us put the past in perspective. Psychologists use the concept of endowment to describe our relationship with things. When we acquire an object, regardless of how it came to us, it will conjure up a feeling, good or bad, mild or intense; either way it will not be neutral. It carries an emotional charge because of the story behind the object. So, it’s not about the stuff, it’s the stories behind the stuff. When the objects, clutter or stuff belongs to a parent, spouse or child they are more emotionally charged especially if that person is no longer with us. We often want to hang onto this stuff even more so.
So, what is the good news here? First, know that attachment is a normal and healthy thing for us to experience. Second, to help clear the clutter you must remind yourself that the important attachment

Since so much happens unconsciously, putting a face to the fact that whether I keep something or let it go my connection to these loved ones will not change really helps. Next month I’ll share more about the process of clearing the clutter with tips and skills from top experts in the field. My hope for us all is that we can make sorting, selling and clearing out what we no longer use, need or love a way of life starting today rather than later or not at all. HealthMed Solutions, Inc. Do You Have a Screw Loose? PRODUCT BRANCH
Getting the most out of your products is important, especially with medical equipment. Knowing what the schedules are for preventative maintenance and resupply orders can improve the effectiveness and longevity of your equipment. Simple steps to ensure that your equipment is providing you with the full treatment or supporting you correctly can also prevent health issues. New medical equipment and supplies often have adjustments that need to be made after about a month of use. Walkers and rollators with brakes need to be tightened to prevent the brakes from slipping. New wheelchairs often need to have screws checked or adjustments made to ensure they operate properly. Walkers with glides
or skis should also be checked to ensure that they do not damage oors or the walker. Respiratory equipment has preventative maintenance periods that are required so if you have portable concentrators that are not part of your insurance plan you should have them checked out every few months. Respiratory companies have a regular schedule where they will check your equipment if you are on an insurance plan but may not do so if you purchase the product on a cash basis. CPAPs and other devices have filters that need to be replaced regularly to ensure that you do not get respiratory infections. All these things will help your products last longer and perform as expected. We see broken wheels

Veteran's Benefits- Are you eligible, what exactly are the requirements for this? Medicaid vs Medicare-What’s the difference and how do I apply? Estate Planning- What are my plans for the home, furnishings inside, vehicles, etc? (Does my family know my wishes?) Legacy Planning- Do I want to leave a legacy behind to my family, or a specific organization? Health Care Advocate/Living Will/Healthcare Power of Attorney-What happens if I become incapacitated, who will make my healthcare decisions with my interests at heart? Power of Attorney- If I become unable, who will make sure my bills get paid on time?

Health Wise Just Breathe!
Have you ever paid attention to the type of breath you take? It wasn’t until recently when By Kim Denoff I started attending a yoga class that I noticed my mind felt clearer and I felt more energetic. It occurred to me one day during a class that I was taking very deep, controlled breaths of air. As I focused on each breath in and out I realized how normally, throughout my day, I take shorter, shallower breaths. I catch myself now at times falling back into “lazy breathing”. So, now it’s time for you to pay attention to the way you breathe: Are you breathing deeply enough? When you’re watching TV tonight, or sitting at the stop light driving, think about the breaths you are taking. Are they shallow, short, or deep, full breaths? When you can relax for five minutes, find a place where you can lie down on your back. Close your eyes and focus on your breath in and out. Place one hand on your stomach and one on your chest. Take a deep controlled breath that inflates your stomach area causing that hand to rise, while keeping the hand on the chest more still. This is where a deep, full breath is taken. By breathing fuller breaths, you can immediately increase the amount of oxygen to your brain. The reward is that every system in your body will work better. Practice this for a few minutes and bring awareness to everyday health by taking the time to just breathe! Eye Health
UV Safety Tips for Your Eyes Summertime means more time spent outdoors. We all use sunscreen to protect our skin, but don't forget to protect your eyes as well from ultraviolet light. Studies show that extended sun exposure creates the possibility for many negative health effects in the eye, such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and growths on the eye, including cancer. The good news is that you can easily protect your eyes by doing the following: 1) Wear sunglasses that block both UV-A and UV-B rays and that are labeled either “UV400” or “100% UV protection”. 2) Consider buying wraparound-style glasses. This helps cut down on UV entering the eye from the side. 3) Polarized lenses reduce the glare coming off reflective surfaces
and makes activities like driving or being on the water safer or more enjoyable. 4) Sunglasses don't have to be costly. Less expensive pairs marked “100% UV-blocking” are
just as effective as pricier options. 5) Wear a hat along with your sunglasses; broad-brimmed hats are best. 6) Clouds don’t block UV light: The sun’s rays can pass through haze and clouds. Sun damage to the eyes can occur any time of year,
By Nishita Patel, MD so you should wear sunglasses year round. 7) Don’t drive without UV eye protection. A recent study found that side windows blocked only 71% of UV rays, compared to 96% in the windshield. By embracing these simple tips, you and your family can enjoy the summer safely while protecting your vision.
Nishita Patel, MD is Halifax Health’s Chief of Ophthalmology specializing in comprehensive eye care and cataract and lens implant surgery. She completed her residency at Yale University School of Medicine.

Have You Heard
Lisa Jones, BC-HIS Helping People Hear Better for 20+ Years
It’s Time to Try Our Latest Smart Phone Hearing Aids Thank you, Lisa for “Changing my Life”
Bill Oakley Sr. Financial Advisor
I first met Lisa Jones about six years ago when my wife and many friends insisted I needed hearing aids. I purchased hearing aids as a result of her testing. Lisa was always there for me when they needed cleaning or adjustments of any kind. Sometime in the last year I lost both hearing aids, when I told Lisa that I needed new hearing aids she explained to me about a rather new technology that worked through my Smart Phone. To say the least, they are incredible! Everyday my wife says to me, “I’m so glad you can hear again.” Probably the best feature for me, a semi-retired senior financial advisor, is that I don’t have to hold the phone up to my ear. All the sounds travel through an app on my phone and go right into my hearing aids. And as I’m becoming used to them, Lisa is always just a phone call away, and I can visit at a moment’s notice. I even recommended her to my regular doctor this morning. Sincerely, Bill Oakley

Healthy Eating A healthy lifestyle involves many choices. Among them, choosing a balanced diet. Healthy eating emphasizes fruits, vegeta-
bles, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, and includes such foods like lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Choices should be low in saturated fats, trans fats, cho-
lesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars, and stay within your daily calorie need If “healthy eating” makes you think about the foods you can’t have, try refocusing on all the new foods you can eat! Fruits ― don’t think just apples or bananas, be sure to try some “exotic” fruits, too! Vegetables ― try something new. You may find that you love grilled vegetables or steamed vegetables with an herb you haven’t tried like rosemary. You can sauté vegetables with a small amount of cooking spray. Or try frozen or canned vegetables for a quick side dish — just microwave and serve. Commit to going to the produce department and trying
By John Canalizo, MD a new vegetable each week. Calcium-rich foods ― Consider lowfat and fat-free yogurts without added sugars. These come in a wide variety of flavors and can be a great dessert substitute for those with a sweet tooth. Healthy eating does not mean you have to give up your favorite comfort food. You can enjoy your favorite foods even if they are high in calories, fat or added sugars. The key is eating them only once in a while, and balancing them out with healthier foods and more physical activity.

the project was delayed and the blasting did not begin on Stone Mountain until 1923. In January of 1924, Borglum was able to complete the head of General Lee, but the debris of the mountain wasn’t the only thing that was crumbling. It seems as soon as the project really got going, so did the explosive personalities of Borglum

Possibly the most interesting thing about these two trips being back to back is the historic link between them. Can you guess what it is? Stone Mountain, Georgia.
and the planning association. A feud arose and Borglum left, taking all his sketches with him. Three years later, Mount Rushmore was begun, by one in the same, Gutzon Borglum. And history was made - now that’s some historic dynamite. This December 5th -10th,we will be taking an Aging Tree Adventure called the Christmas Mountain Spectacular to Stone Mountain, Georgia. During the Christmas Season the park is transformed into a winter wonderland that could rival the North Pole! You will experience so much more than the history of the confederate carving and the surrounding area. All around,
“How can Stone Mountain be the link to Mount Rushmore?” you ask.
A man named Gutzon Borglum was the main connection between the two major projects. In 1915, Gutzon was hired in Stone Mountain as the sculptor of the confederate carving in which he dreamed to carve “an army of thousands.” Due to funding issues caused by World War I,

Eye Health
INSIDE ADVISOR
By Denny Parker, CEO, Systems of Sight
Every Person Is Unique Systems of Sight has been serving people with macular degeneration for over 25 years, and has an A plus rating with the Better Business Bureau. Systems of Sight has helped many people maintain or regain a level of personal independence and lifestyle enjoyment. However, each person is different as to their eye condition, eye health, and their ability to adapt to the eyewear. Before scheduling a consultation, our staff interviews potential clients to determine whether their current eye health makes them a candidate for consultation.
Testimonials:
“Everyone is different your eyesight is different from mine. But for
the small amount they charge for an examination, it’s worth a try. Go – Go! Try it! They’re not there to try to sell, they’re there to try to help.” – Lillian H “It had become dangerous for me to even try crossing the street. Cars would disappear suddenly. It had also become difficult to read. My ophthalmologist told me there was nothing more he could do, so I pursued Systems of Sight. I no longer see that blind spot and cars don’t disappear. I can also read the newspaper.” – Rex E. “Most people don’t know unless they go get the exam if (Systems of Sight) is going to help them or not. And if they don’t, they might be passing up an opportunity that would really help them. You never know until
you go see and that’s the most important thing – to do it.” – Arthur C. “My 41 year old husband David suffers from cone-rod dystrophy, it started affecting him in his pre-teen yrs. I can’t even begin to tell you just how much we appreciate your kindness!! I’m at a loss for words and an emotional mess. You just don’t know what you have done for us in so many different ways! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!” – Mrs. David S. VA Benefits
INSIDE ADVISOR
Can You Hear Me Now?
I
t’s a fact; military duty is an inherently noisy job. From the bottom of a Navy ship’s bilge pump to the top of the stratosphere in an Air Force fighter jet and hundreds of jobs in between, the near daily assault on one’s hearing can take a toll in a short amount of time. This article in the series about the power of being proactive will explore the possibility of VA service connection for hearing loss and tinnitus symptoms and the benefit of applying for it sooner rather than later! Among the most common compensation claims filed with the VA are hearing loss and tinnitus, which typically manifests itself as a ringing sound in the ear. These claims are well aided by the fact that VA concedes that a large number of military occupations have at least a moderate to high probability of dangerous noise exposure. Even in the absence of that evidence, the circumstances of your duties may well have brought you in contact with various noise hazards. Could your hearing loss or tinnitus be related to that noise?
That is the mystery that VA must resolve and we at Volusia County Veterans Services are happy to help you present a persuasive case to the VA.
are related to your service. The research regarding late onset hearing loss is minimal and the passage of time only serves to muddle the argument. That is not to say that the case cannot be proven so it is certainly worth the effort to make the claim. It is also worth remembering that compensation only starts from the date the claim is filed! Can you hear me now?
Walk in and see us at: If service connection is established, you may be granted compensation based on the severity of your symptoms. Service connection also guarantees enrollment in VA health services as well. For those already enrolled in Medicare, VA health services may be a suitable supplement to those benefits in many cases. Moreover, the VA regularly provides hearing aids for those veterans that suffer from hearing loss. On the subject of being proactive, news does not typically get better with age. The sooner you file a claim for these symptoms, the easier it is for the VA to determine the likelihood that they
