LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

From the Roots “Give a little, get a lot” this holiday season

T

his time of year can conjure up beloved memories of our childhood holiday experiences as we envision our little selves gathered around the fireplace and sipping eggnog, or are reminded of tucking our kids and grandkids into bed on chilly winter nights. The holidays can bring back all the happy times with those we’ve loved.

But, as the world moves forward with its holiday cheer and big dinner plans, this time of year also can be a time of missing our favorite people in the world…the loved ones who are no longer with us. If you’re anticipating another holiday season of feeling sad, I have an idea for you: Plan to get out into the world and brighten up another’s holiday. Share your blessings with people around you and feel it come back to you tenfold. Giving to others this holiday season could be as simple as picking up items at the store for the food pantry, and dropping them off to eager volunteers. Or, it could mean pulling a name off the angel tree at the mall and buying a new, unwrapped toy for an underprivileged child. Putting a smile on your own face could be as easy as striking up a conversation with the bell ringer outside the grocery store door and thanking him for his service. And, sharing the joy of the season could be as simple as inviting a neighbor over for dessert on New Year’s Day. Ask people how they are and how they will spend their holidays. Ask them about their favorite things; ask them about what brings them joy. Listen, then ask some more. Take Aging Tree Illustrated with you when you go on your way. Inside this issue you’ll find tons of ideas for having fun, thanks to writer Amanda Eastep, as well as inspired ways to enjoy the holidays if you’re a caregiver, courtesy of Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP. John Joslin is sharing tips for caring for your garden in the Florida winter, while Nishita Patel, MD, and Denny Parker remind us how to put ourselves back on our self-care lists by loving our eyes a little bit better. If all the family togetherness is reminding you that you still need to have “the talk” with your parents about their end-of-life plans, Scott A. Selis, Esq. gives us tips to help it go smoothly when the time is right. We invite you to step up your gift-giving game with this issue, too! Amanda Eastep shares enlightened ideas for kids who have the world at their fingertips, while Amanda Vallone reminds us of the beautiful gift of travel. And that’s only the beginning. Remember: There are a million ways to give to others and bring joy to ourselves when we do. I hope you keep that in mind as you read this issue, our gift to you this holiday season. They say “the joy is in the giving.” This year, let’s test that theory like we never have before. We have nothing to lose and joy to gain. Happy Holidays Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

Give Yourself the Gift of Fun Great Ways to Celebrate the Holiday Season FEATURE ARTICLE

T

he holidays have this magical ability to inspire us to give more, to hope more, and to celebrate more. Central Florida offers many ways for residents and visitors alike to enjoy the music, sparkling lights, and festivities that transform our normal world into a wonderland. To help you celebrate this special time of year, we’re sharing some of the events planned in the local areas. This “nice” list doesn’t include all of the activities available, so check your city’s website, Facebook page, and newspaper for additional options.

by visiting Tuesday through Friday.

Light Up Your Life

We would love a bird’s eye view of Central Florida as scores of communities light up their homes and streets with light displays and the University of Florida presents its spectacular light show. Check your city’s website or local newspaper for notable light displays in your area neighborhoods. Light Up UCF, through January 7, 2017, CFE Arena, 12777 Gemini Blvd. N. Orlando,

Let It Snow!

Now Snowing. If Christmas just doesn’t feel the same without the fluffy (and cold!) white stuff, the town of Celebration is forecasting snow every evening at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. from November 26 through December 31. This monthlong winter wonderland features an ice skating rink, strolling Charles Dickens Carolers, community performers, photos with Santa, horse drawn carriage rides, and the Celebration Express train.

The Reason for the Season

Many cities offer faith-based events for those who want to focus on the spiritual aspects of the holidays. Local churches and other organizations offer various ways to celebrate the “reason for the season”. Walk Through Bethlehem (free), December 11-13, 6-9 p.m. Crossroads Ministries, 1851 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach. Experience Bethlehem the night Jesus was born. Be aware this is an outdoor experience and not suitable for walker/wheelchair/motorized scooter users. The Singing Christmas Trees of First Baptist Orlando (tickets required), December 11, 12, 13 and 18, 19, 20. First Baptist Orlando, 3000 South John Young Parkway, Orlando. Join in a 30-plus-year Orlando tradition as this powerful choir, accompanied by a full orchestra, presents Christmas classics surrounded by thousands of holiday lights. Holy Land Experience (tickets required), 4655 Vineland Road, Orlando. Travel back more than 2,000 years to visit a Jerusalem street market, the Great Temple, and Calvary’s garden tomb. Avoid the Saturday crowds

University of Central Florida. This fun event, now in its ninth year, offers ice skating, rides, a film festival (movies shown Friday and Saturday at 7 and 9:30 p.m.), and spectacular light shows. Light shows are scheduled hourly beginning at 6 p.m. There is a cost for ice skating and rides, but the film festival and the Holiday Light Show are free. Jax Illumination’s 4th Annual Drive Thru Light Show ($20 per car), 6-9:30 p.m., through January 1, 2017. Morocco Shrine Auditorium, 3800 St. Johns Bluff Rd S, Jacksonville. Drive through 1½ miles of twinkling lights set to holiday music favorites.

We Love a Parade

Parades are especially spectacular this time of year with their array of lights, sights, and music, winding their way through neighborhoods and right into the hearts of happy onlookers. DeLand Christmas Parade 2016, December 3, 5:30 p.m. “Be a Gift to the Community” is the theme of the 68th Annual DeLand Christmas Parade, presented by The Rotary Clubs of DeLand. The parade begins at the intersection of Flagler Avenue and South Atlantic Avenue, travels west along Flagler Avenue and the North Causeway, south on Riverside Drive, then turns west onto Canal Street. Palm Coast Starlight Event & Parade, December 10, 7–8 p.m. Central Park in Town Center, Palm Coast. This parade of lighted floats and marching bands begins at the RoundAbout on Central Avenue, then heads east, turning north onto Park Street, east onto Lake Avenue, and south on City Place; it then continues south on Bulldog Drive. Beginning at 4 p.m., visitors can also enjoy live entertainment and performances, pictures with Santa, food, and beverages. Daytona Christmas Boat Parade, December 10. The Halifax River Yacht Club hosts this event to help raise funds for Light the Way, a local community network that supports the needs of cancer patients in treatment in Volusia County. Macy’s Holiday Parade™ (see a “Theme Park Christmas”)

Celebrating through Song and Dance

What would the holidays be without music? From cantatas to carols, the joy of the season being expressed through voices and dance. A Classic Christmas (tickets required), December 10-11. In addition to its annual Christmas parade on December 3, Winter Park presents Christmas classics performed by the Bach Festival Choir, Youth Choir, and Orchestra in the beautiful Knowles Memorial Chapel. cont. pg 10 |8|

What is better than bringing joy to others, especially during a season when many people deal with loneliness? Christmas is the perfect opportunity to spread comfort and joy! • Buy a few extra items each time you shop or get neighbors involved to collect non-perishable food items for local shelters or organizations such as the Central Florida Children’s Home. • Your house of worship may have suggestions for how to help decorate the sanctuary, provide a gift or meal for shut-ins or families in need, or invite a member with no family to Christmas dinner. • Do you know a neighbor kid without a grandparent in their lives? Invite their parents to bring them over for an afternoon of cookie baking. • You can also open your home temporarily to a rescue pet who needs a safe and loving foster mom or dad until a permanent home can be found. (The holidays can be hectic, so be sure this longer-term commitment is something you are prepared to take on and is the best for the foster animal.) • Find more volunteer opportunities online at visitorlando.com.

Spending the Holidays as a Caregiver

Make a Merry Mindset

H

olidays and celebrations have been different this year, compared to the last 9 years, for Marian and our family. This sweet lady will be 94 this month and the passage of time holds little awareness of such things. At present, she has a safe, quiet, happy place in our home where she can escape the busyness of a full life. Did you know that there are 44 million family caregivers in the U.S.? My husband, son and daughter

• Is this something you might want to do differently? • Is this a habit, tradition, choice or obligation? • Is it a one-person job or can it be shared? • Who is responsible to see that it gets done? • Do you like doing it? The answers to these questions are often very insightful and identify areas where oth-

are also part of this group, perhaps you are too? Reportedly half of all individuals over 85 suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, and with other disabilities at any age it is likely you will encounter a caregiving family friend or healthcare professional. Holidays can present additional challenges to an already stressful situation so let’s briefly share possible strategies and solutions. Holiday traditions provide the opportunity for the renewal of friendships, family relationships and even our faith. It is also a time to seek balance, which is especially true for caregivers as this renewal process has added more to the “to do list”. Doing a “stress assessment” for these traditions, according to Michael Plontz and others is an important exercise. Which of the following activities appear on your list: Take to healthcare appointments; Manage the budget; Grocery shop; Buy special holiday clothing; Decorate the home/tree; Go to holiday parties; Invite guests to your home; Send holiday cards/ letters; Attend special services/events; Gift buying/wrapping; Visit family; Visit friends; Have a clean house; Take quiet time for immediate family and Take time for self-care? What others are on your list? Now ask yourself the following questions for each item on your list: • Would the holidays be the same without it?

ers can help. It provides the opportunity to plan and focus on what is most meaningful. I highly recommend compiling a non-holiday list and completing the same process. Caregiving during the holidays presents additional areas of need for your loved one. The need for familiarity and safety is foundational for the memory challenged person so taking care with decorating and room changes will be important. Design simple, non-cluttered decorations, avoiding trip and fall hazards. Be mindful of overstimulation however appeal to all the senses whenever possible with the sounds, sights, smells and tastes of the holiday. Familiar holiday music can be comforting. Find ways to have your loved one participate in the festivities as much as possible as you create new traditions suitable for this place and time. Prepare visitors and family members, especially children, who have not been able to visit for some time regarding the changes that they can expect. I have a letter that I can share that provides an update for guests prior to their visit to make it easier for them to know what to expect.

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP In my practice, we focus on the power of mindset as we approach every aspect of our lives. As I look ahead to this holiday season I am trying to “mind my own mindset”. This means that I will need to take time to acknowledge as normal the range of emotions I am feeling including joy, frustration and grief. I will be truly in the moment rather than letting my mind wander to the next group of things. Not an easy task for a forward thinker, but I am savoring stolen moments I may have missed otherwise. I resolve to focus on the positives: Thinking about what I can do rather than what I cannot; celebrating what my loved one can do rather than grieving what is lost; savoring the daily joys, instead of feeling sad for what I will miss; appreciating the help whenever and wherever it appears with peace that it is sufficient. Will the challenge have changed any? Not likely for the better, but it is better overall. That is the gift of mindset. Reflecting on the challenges and rewards of caregiving provides the opportunity to help maintain your peace of mind and your joy during the holiday season. Creating and taking time for self-care makes the difference. Please take to heart that self-care is not “selfish” as it is not possible to pour from an empty cup. Perhaps you are wondering about what choices are available to you or honoring a promise you have made to the person for whom you provide care. Resolve to learn what is possible for you and your loved one. You are not alone. Celebrate the

GIVE THE GIFT OF TRANSPORTATION Transportation is a crucial element to living in today’s society. It ensures access to essential services such as medical care and grocery shopping. The availability of adequate transportation enables riders to live independently in their communities and helps to prevent isolation and the possible need for long-term care placement. Since many seniors do not drive, they must rely on family and friends to provide much of their transportation. With Votran, transportation once again becomes a safe and independent activity. This holiday, give the gift of independence with a Votran bus pass. Value passes are a great gift, and are available for different time periods of one-day, three-day, seven-day, and thirty-one day. You can order them online too—just visit the Fares and Passes page at votran.org. A pass will not expire until it reaches the time limit that is established after the first use. For example, when boarding with a one-day pass for the first time, it will be stamped with the date and time; then you can use it for an unlimited number of rides for the next 24 hours. Whether you are looking for yourself, a family member or a friend, Votran offers 3 unique services to best meet your needs– Fixed Route Service, Gold Service (by application only) and FLEX Service for the New Smyrna Beach area 1. Fixed Route Service – Anyone can ride a Fixed Route bus! Our fixed route buses are the best value and have the most frequency and stops to accommodate all riders. This service includes a fleet with wheelchair accessible lifts or ramps, kneeling buses, and discounts fares for age and disability with valid identification. There is no pre-scheduling, eliminating any guess work in planning your trip. Every bus is safe and clean. Trip planning assistance and rider training are available for our Fixed Route systems either online or through our customer service representatives. 2. Gold Service – Persons who, because of a disability or other limitations, cannot use the standard fixed route bus service may be eligible for Votran’s paratransit Gold Service. This reservation-based, door-to-door service requires an eligibility application and acceptance. Call customer service or go online to download the application from our website, votran.org. 3. FLEX Service – Persons in the designated areas of New Smyrna Beach may enjoy FLEX service, reservation based curb-to-curb transportation service within a dedicated service area with limited timed stops in New Smyrna Beach. Votran aims to make traveling easy for all passengers. Votran’s multi-ride/multi-day value passes, different service options, Votran MyStop app and Vo to Go texting service help riders get to their destination with no fuss or confusion. With Vo to Go and MyStop Mobile, Votran puts convenience in the palm of your hand. To learn more about all the convenient tools and services Votran offers, visit Votran.org. Floaters and Flashes

Floaters and Flashes and What You Can Do Flashes and floaters can be alarming. People might initially think there is a fly following them around. What exactly is a floater? A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a normal part of the aging process of the human eye. The vitreous is the jelly-like material that fills the eye. As we age, the watery elements in the vitreous separate from the fibrous components. This leads to seeing small black floating spots and bright flashes of light in your peripheral vision. Anyone who experiences a recent onset of these symptoms should have a dilated exam as soon as possible by an ophthalmologist. 90% of the time it is harmless with no treatment necessary. The flashes eventually go away, and your brain gets accustomed to floaters so you notice them less over time. About 10% of the time, a retinal tear can develop when a PVD

forms. The retina is the inner layer of the eye. Treatments for these tears are very

can include not only flashes and floaters, but also a black curtain coming down in the vision. Time can be of the essence if a retinal detachment is present, so it is important to get checked right away. Flashes and floaters are very common. Almost everyone experiences them at one time or another. Risk factors include age (over 50), nearsightedness, recent eye surgery, and injuries to the eye. Although floaters are an annoyance most of the time, make sure you always rule out a serious condition.

simple and effective – it can be with a laser or a freezing unit. If left untreated, these tears may lead to a retinal detachment. This is a serious condition that requires a major surgical procedure to repair. Symptoms of a retinal detachment

INSIDE ADVISOR Happy Holidays, Aging Tree Illustrated readers. There’s a new holiday tradition that many families are experiencing. It’s “The Talk”, which is when families discuss plans for the final decade of their loved one’s life. Talking with a loved one about death and disability can be difficult, but it’s a discussion that must be had. Typically, The Talk is brought up by adult children to a parent. It’s rare that a parent genuinely welcomes “The Talk.” So, what’s a loved one to do? Accept that an adult child’s goals and those of the parent are typically very different? Usually, the child just wants to discuss the issues, identify solutions, and be done with it. The parent on the other hand fears that having the talk will result in loss of independence and dignity. So, here are a few suggestions: Before you start “The Talk”, Do Your Homework-Moving to a long-term com• munity frightens our elders. Not staying home is viewed as a loss of independence

Legal - Let’s Have “the Talk” and/or a massive blow to dignity. • Assisted Living: Look at area communities and read reviews before you start The Talk. Go to the Aging Tree website, https://www.agingtree.com/, for resources. □ Consider hiring an assisted living placement specialist, FOR FREE. The specialist will help you identify which communities best fit your loved one’s needs. • Staying Home: Determine whether it’s safe to keep the loved one home, and if not, determine whether home modifications would make it safer. Start “The Talk” Slowly • Bring up a care topic naturally. Discuss problems of people that you and they know that are experiencing later life challenges. You can mention a friend or family member that is staying at home or has moved to a community. • Then, ask for their opinion about how to solve the loved one’s problem. Leave it there. Don’t discuss solutions to your loved one’s problems. • Be complimentary of the things that your loved one has done to stay safe (i.e., putting up a handle in shower). Then, when your loved one experiences a safety issue, solicit their opinions by asking what they

By Scott A. Selis, Esq. think should be done. DON’T ARGUE!! □ Avoid telling them that you’re “going to do” anything until they ask you about doing it. □ Avoid saying that it’s time to go to a community. □ Don’t tell your loved one that they are wrong. □ Consider Using a Geriatric Care Manager to deliver the message. A neutral third party’s opinions are usually better received. Finally, ask your parents to visit with an Elder Care Lawyer, even if they have a will, trust, power of attorney, etc. Most of those documents don’t adequately address subjects that are involved with Elder Care Law. Scott Selis is a lawyer at Chiumento Selis Dwyer in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. Scott’s a member of the Task Force for the Elderly and is Administrative Committee Chair for the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section. He recently received the Elder Law Attorney of the Year Award. Mud or debris from previous use should be removed. • The ladder should be stable on level footing before climbing • Stay centered between the rails of the ladder • 1 to 4 rule: The ladder should be one foot away from the wall for every four feet it reaches up • Do not stand on furniture to hang items. Use a step stool instead. • Keep hallways and pathways clear of boxes, decorations and other items that you can trip on.

The holiday season is officially underway. Injuries during this time can definitely throw a curveball into the seasonal festivities. Below are some of the more common causes of injury and the recommendations by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons on how to avoid them.

Falls:

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 6000 falls occur from November 1st – January 1st. 42% of these are from ladders. This can lead to broken bones, back and neck sprains, muscle, ligament and cartilage tears.

Luggage safety:

Neck, back, and shoulder injuries are common problems when lifting overstuffed, heavy luggage. In 2014, Data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission showed that there were almost 73,000 people who suffered luggage related injuries. • Pack lightly, use luggage with wheels when possible

Gift Giving Guide For Kids

Gift ideas for kids who have the world at their fingertips

R

emember Christmases when kids were happy with a doll or spaceship that required C batteries to light up and make annoying sound effects? These days, the gifts seem to get smaller as the price tags get bigger. A single video game can cost $65-75. A mobile phone can run well into the hundreds. And instead of writing Christmas lists you can stick to the fridge with your palm tree magnet, your grandkids are emailing you their Amazon lists. If you’re stuck for holiday gift giving ideas, here’s a list that even Santa would approve of.

A Few of Their Favorite Things

Even if you spend a lot of time with the young people in your life, it can be a challenge to know exactly what items they prefer. Factor in the correct model, brand, version, etc., and holiday gift buying becomes an obstacle course. Gift cards. While gift cards take the fun away from ripping paper off a box, they are certainly fun once the shopping begins. Buy a variety in lower dollar amounts to include more of your grandchild’s favorite places to eat and shop. Cold hard cash. Money may seem like an impersonal gift, but most young people never complain about receiving cash. For a personal touch, include a letter about what you’d like to see them do with that gift. In addition, encourage them to take 10% of the total and deposit it in a savings account or donate it to charity. Care packages. Do you have a grandchild who lives far away? Send a care package. Add the kinds of items you might be giving them if they lived close by and visited regularly. Think homemade cookies, candy, small toys (depending on the children’s ages), and a note from you about how much you miss them. A year of entertainment. Have you heard of “binging” on a favorite TV series? Check with the parents first, but offering to pay for a subscription to streaming movie sites, like Netflix or Hulu, can provide a year’s worth of entertainment. Other subscription options include Amazon Prime and print or online versions of their favorite magazines.

You Could Learn a Thing or Two

“Educational toys” don’t often make it into the letter to Santa, but that doesn’t mean they don’t make great gifts.

By Amanda Eastep and about empowering those who have less to become more self-reliant. Jewelry with a purpose. Companies and organizations like Noonday Collection and Huaywasi, Handmade in Peru partner with fair trade artisans globally to help provide work to people in third world countries for handmade items like jewelry, clothing, and other accessories. This work enables both women and men to support their families and break cycles of poverty.

Experience Over Things

STEM focused. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Our country is discovering that kids are falling behind in these critical subjects. This is the perfect opportunity to encourage an appreciation for the world and the way things work. Girls, especially, need this encouragement! Amazon.com’s “STEM Picks” category has a variety of items, from tabletop robot kits to microscopes. Another cool option is a subscription to the Spangler Science Club. Depending on the package you choose, STEM kits--filled with activities, experiments, and challenges--are delivered to your child’s door each month. The Arts. While colorful arrays of pastels and paints are fun to give and receive, especially for young artists, consider other ways to nurture creativity. Despite the fact that many kids have phones on their cameras, an actual 35mm camera can validate the work of your serious photographer. Tickets to a live theater performance or a concert, such as The Legend of Zelda (a longtime video game favorite), can open their eyes to new ways to express themselves. Real-live books. This one is easy if you have a reader in the family, but even if you don’t, a book can make a special gift. Is there a book that changed you after you read it, especially when you were the age your special kid is now? Buy a new copy of it and write a note in the front cover about how reading it affected you and why you want to share it.

Gifts that Give Back

Many young people today are social justice minded. They care deeply about the world

By this point in life, many of us have already discovered what researchers recently concluded: spending money on experiences has a more positive and long-lasting effect than spending money on things. Yet, those experiences don’t have to look like an expensive cruise to the Bahamas either. Hands-on fun. Has your grandchild always wanted to learn archery? Buy a gift certificate for lessons. Do they love space, dinosaurs, or whales? Accompany them to a nearby planetarium, museum, or aquarium. Do they live far away? Fly them in for a weeklong visit (keeping in mind they like beaches and theme parks, not pinochle). If possible, plan ways to spend quality time with them and enjoy the experience together. Mix it up. For those on a tighter budget, think of fun ways to combine gift cards to create an experience. For instance, a Night at the Movies-themed gift might include a popcorn container filled with boxes of M&Ms, bags of microwave popcorn, and either a gift card to the local movie theater or a DVD. A “Spa Getaway” could include bubble bath and lotion, a scented candle, and a gift card for a manicure. Amazon.com, the world’s largest online retailer, offers helpful suggestions for gift buyers. The website’s “Toy List” categorizes items by age group. When you click on an age group, item choices that are reviewed at 4 stars and up fill the page. You can also click on categories such as “Parent Picks”, “Kid Picks”, and “Top 100”. Interestingly enough, many of the favorite picks include board games, remote-controlled cars, bikes, and stuffed animals. Maybe holiday gift giving hasn’t changed that much after all!

Travel Smart: Gift Giving for the Savvy Traveler

F

ifteen years ago my family decided to stop exchanging Christmas gifts and rather give the gift of “experiences”. Every year we travel together in lieu of gifting one another items of less importance. Our motto truly is “Take Vacations- You can always make money- you can’t always make memories- You Only Live Once!”

pensive “fixes”. If you plan on surprising your loved ones with the gift of travel be sure to know a few things first: • Does the recipient have vacation time? If they cannot get off work during the dates selected, your kind gift will turn into lost money. • Do they have a passport if traveling internationally?

Have you ever read the quote “Actually, the best gift you could have given her was a lifetime of adventures.” And thought… YES! That is so true. This year give the gift of adventure to yourself, your loved ones, and your friends. Travel is the only gift that you give that keeps on giving back to you year after year. When the knick knack on the shelf is outdated and dusty it goes into the donate bin right? But when you gather together with your friends and family you talk about that amazing trip to Hawaii you took 10 years ago when Aunt Joanne was hit by a wave and couldn’t get out of the water, and Uncle John ordered so many lobster tails on the cruise you were certain CNN would report BREAKING NEWS a lobster was extinct after that, and how Cousin Kathy thought a lava tube was going to be tiny, but in all actuality we walked through it like a tunnel-- a gathering of these funny and fun stories are the memories that last a lifetime. So how do you get the gift giving right?

• What are their legal names and dates of birth? Necessary for air, cruise, or tours, you must have the correct legal names and dates of birth including the year of birth. • Do they get seasick? If going on a cruise you will want to know this so they can get the patch from their doctor in advance. And so you can select a good cabin category for them with less chop. • Are you sure they can go during this time you picked? If not, what is the refund policy with the cruise line, tour company, hotel, airline? When in doubt…Gift Certificate. We often have clients come into our office wanting to surprise their significant other, Mom and Dad, or friend with the gift of travel. But if you do not know the above answers and are not 100% certain, there are often strict penalties (especially when airfare is involved). For example, you and your spouse have talked about seeing the National Parks of the U.S. What we recommend doing is getting a gift certificate for your spouse. At Roseborough Travel we customize the certificate for you to say something like

Eye Health Macular Degeneration cont. INSIDE ADVISOR

Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the number one cause of irreversible vision loss. While AMD will not result in total blindness, the impact on one’s quality of life can vary from person to person. Simple tasks such as grooming yourself or even pouring a cup of coffee can become complex. When you hear from your doctor that you have macular degeneration, it can be devastating initially. Along with a decrease in your visual acuity, there can be an emotional and psychosocial impact as well. That is why it’s important for you and your loved ones to look into ways of coping. First, spend time with your doctor discussing your particular situation. There are also non-profit organizations that can provide written and audio material. These organizations may also have classes to help you adjust. Do not feel alone. Over 12 million in the U.S. are affected by AMD to some degree.

By Denny Parker, CEO, Systems of Sight

Many other central vision disorders can have the same impact as AMD. Some of these include, but are not limited to, Diabetic Retinopathy, Stargardt’s Disease, Cone-Rod

Dystrophy, Ocular histoplasmosis, toxoplasmosis, Macular hole, Ocular Albinism and nystagmus etc.

While there is no cure at this time for AMD, stem cell therapy has shown promise for the future. For now, fortunately there’s a variety of low vision aids that may provide help such as CCTV’s (for reading your mail, prescriptions etc.), hand held magnifiers, telescopic glasses (for watching t.v., a ballgame, etc.) and prismatic eyewear for image translocation. Some of these provide help for distance as well as near vision. Results may vary per individual, so always have the product demonstrated before you purchase to be sure your objectives and expectations are met. To see if you are a candidate or receive additional information and references on Systems of Sight, call 800-435-7706 or visit them at www.systemsofsight.com.

GARDENING BRANCH

Strong Roots

What is Growing in Your Garden for Christmas?

I

have met many new arrivals to Florida over the past few months and if that includes you then let me say, “Welcome neighbor!” If you are from up north (it is hard to not be when you come to Florida) then you are in for a few surprises. Life is different in many ways down here. One of those ways is why you came, the weather. November through March is one of the best reasons for living in Florida. The winters are much more temperate, although we do get a few cold spells. For many of you it seems like time to pull up that garden and begin planning all the holiday activities. But along with the decorating and cooking and shopping I want to encourage you to think about planting not pulling up your garden. Here in Florida our gardening season is just getting started. Normally on the farm we begin planting in September and don’t stop until May. We get about 30 weeks of glorious produce of all sorts here. With the right types of plants you hardly have to worry about frost and freezes. We start the fall with a crop of green and yellow string beans. Planted in September or October they provide us with a wonderful

harvest until the first freeze. Once done we clear them out and bring out snow peas which are much more cold tolerant. Alongside these we grow many of the cold weather vegetables which are well suited for our mild winters. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, let-

tuce, carrots, beets, spinach, turnips, poc choi and kohlrabi all favor cooler weather and do well even in January and February. Most of the herbs with the exception of Basil also do well in the cool winters here and seldom need protection.

by John Joslin We also grow tomatoes although they are grown in a greenhouse at this time a year. On cold nights a couple of propane heaters keep them toasty. For you a cover and a simple string of regular Christmas lights (not LED) or an incandescent bulb or two should supply enough heat to keep them warm on a cold night. (See the January 2016 article on the Aging Tree website archives for more on cold protection) What I am saying is you don’t have to give up the garden for this winter. It can be a source of delicious vegetables and herbs for those holiday dinners. Imagine stuffing made with fresh picked sage or a delicious home grown vegetable soup on a cold winter day. An additional benefit to growing a winter garden in Florida is usually fewer insects and weeds. So plant away and enjoy your holiday harvest. If you have further questions I invite you to come for one of our free tours held every Saturday at 10am at Common Ground Farm. Pat and I wish all of you the very Merriest of Christmases. Make each day this month a good day to have a good day. For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E. Taylor Rd, DeLand, FL 32724 or e-mail any questions to strongroots.agingtree@gmail.com

IN THE KITCHEN

Bourbon Sweet Potatoes By Janet Dixon Sometimes the sauce is not the gravy. Enjoy this festive holiday dish with your favorite bourbon to add the extra holiday kick that you have been missing. One for the chef, one for the dish, that’s what I always say. Take the traditional sweet potato casserole and kick it up a notch.

Janet

8-10

4 tbsp of butter, melted 1/4 c heavy whipping Cream 1/2 c of Bourbon (our choice) 1/3 c orange juice plus 1 tsp orange zest 1/4 c firmly packed dark brown sugar 1 tsp sea salt 1/4 tsp nutmeg 3/4 - 1 c of Pecan halves

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat over to 350. Wash and quarter, Place in a large pot with enough water to just cover peel them by 2 inches. Bring potatoes to a boil and continue boiling until fork tender, about 15 minutes drain and transfer to a large bowl. Add unsalted butter, cream, bourbon, orange juice, orange zest brown sugar, salt and nutmeg, mash everything together with a potato mashed or electric mixer. Spoon the sweet potato mixture into a casserole dish, top with pecan and bake 30 minutes at Image courtesy of /kristineskitchenblog.com/healthy-slow-cook350.
