Bottom line: Lessen your chance of falling, and increase your chance of good health. Have you fallen, or had an aging friend or relative fall? A simple slip or trip can be life-altering. Let’s create our own #preventfalling campaign, my friends. We all can be a part of the safety solution by: • Cleaning up clutter in our home and work spaces that someone could trip over. • Installing grab bars and handrails in injury-prone areas like stairs and bathrooms. • Keeping walking areas well lit, especially at night. Of course, you don’t have to be older than 65 to fall. Did you hear the story about how talk-show host and comedian Jimmy Fallon tripped on a rug in his home, and nearly lost his wedding-ring finger when the ring got caught on a kitchen-counter corner? Tripping mishaps can happen to anyone…even 40-year-old comedians! We want you to be safe in your homes, and as you navigate the world. Sure, you can wear “grippy” shoes and avoid wearing loose clothing that may get snagged on something, but you can also be aware of your surroundings when you’re up and about, too. Fall prevention is injury prevention. And fall-prevention is just the start. Remember: Safety never happens by accident. In this issue of Aging Tree Illustrated, we bring you tips on how to stay safe with home medical equipment, and include a caregiver’s perspective as well. In these pages, too, you’ll find tried-and-true insight and advice for working your computer, keeping your health at its prime through healthy eating and moving your body, and much more. Read, share, and join the conversation. June is National Safety Month…so let’s embrace the movement to prevent falls and promote safety for seniors. We can all do our part to keep ourselves, our loved ones and friends safer, even in our own homes. It’s time we “fall” in love with safety, once and for all!
Make your days great…you’re in charge of them..

O
ur independence is something that we all strive for in our daily life. The risks we face at home increase as we age but there are products that can help us stay safe at home longer. If we look around our homes we think of the places where accidents are most likely to occur and the kitchen seems like an obvious choice. There are sharp objects, fire, boiling water, and other hazards that make the kitchen seem like the most dangerous place in our home. It may surprise you to find out that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the home with approximately 21 million people sustaining injuries each year costing $67 billion (Judy A. Stevens, 2011). With these concerns about the bathroom we would expect our insurance to pay for the products that help keep us safe but unfortunately, they do not. Shower chairs, transfer benches, shower mats, grab bars and other devices to help prevent falls in the shower or bath are simply not covered by Medicare and insurance. The good news is that these products are often not expensive and can prevent falls and other accidents that result in hospital visits. Products that make the bathroom safer include benches that allow you to sit while showering. There are many types of shower benches, some fit in the tub if you can safely step over the tub wall and others stick out of the tub offering a place to sit and slide into the tub one leg at a time. Grab
bars give you something to hold on to while transitioning from the bath or toilet. Grab bars need to be installed and often involve drilling into the tile in the tub or bath. This is a job for a professional unless you have extra tile that you can replace broken tiles with. It is always recommended to have a nonslip surface to stand on when in the shower or bath, which can be solved with a simple bath mat or nonslip stickers made for the tub. Moving from the bathroom to other areas of the home we find other issues that we should be aware of to prevent unnecessary health and safety risks. All of the electric powered equipment needs to be plugged in at one time or another. This includes power wheelchairs, scooters, hospital beds, oxygen concentrators, nebulizers, CPAP machines, and many others. It is important to read the manufacturers' recommendations for plugging these items in because if you are not properly grounded or your outlets are overloaded you can run the risk of fire or electric shock. Looking around the home you may find throw rugs or area rugs that have an edge which are easy to trip on, especially if you are using a walker. Oxygen tubing can also make these rugs more dangerous because it could catch your tubing and catch you off balance or flip up an edge that you can trip over. Ensuring that your floor is free from obstacles is important and can save you lots of pain and money.

All of the hazards that we have identified and those we have not bring to mind another important device to help in the event of an accident or fall. Technology has made the emergency response systems that we can wear much smaller and more convenient. There are call buttons that use GPS (global position satellites) to identify where you are when you have an emergency and they can call for help when you cannot reach the phone. The GPS helps first responders or family find you when they are alerted making the response time much shorter and that time saved could be a life saved. our independence and looking “handicapped” is something that we are all self-conscious about. The truth is that using a device to help with stability such as a cane, walker, rollator or any other walking aid can prevent falls from happening. The pain of the fall is much worse than showing off your stylish walker or cane. The medical supply industry has become more aware of the look of the product and how important it is to have something that meets your style. There are all sorts of colors, prints and styles that can make your walking aid something that you are proud to show off. The benefits include having a place to carry something like the basket on a walker or a place to sit when you get tired from walking. The tools that are available can increase your ability to go further and with less effort. The support
from the walking aids can be a life saver. If you can walk, then walk as much as you can…but if you need a scooter or power wheelchair to get further or prevent you from falling they can be your best friend. Many times, we have customers asking about scooters because they just cannot get as far by walking as they used to. The right scooter can make your life much easier and give you the ability to go places you could not without help. Preventing a fall by using a scooter will keep you safer and reduce the risk of going too far to get back. Things like getting the mail may be too much for some people and a scooter could make that task part of our lives again. For some opening the door or putting on socks can be a challenge. There are devices and tools

that can help and they are called "aids to daily living". These may be as simple as a reacher so you can pick something up off the floor without losing your balance or a dressing stick that helps you pull up your socks. Getting dressed when you cannot bend over or lean too far can be a challenge making the process dangerous. There are sock aids that help pull your socks on, door knob attachments that make opening the door easier, shoe horns that make putting your shoes on and elastic laces so you do not have to tie your shoes so you can stay safe. The aids to daily living are usually small items or simple tools that give you the advantage when doing the things, we all do during the day. When it comes to bedtime getting in may be easy because we have gravity that works on our
| 10 |
side but getting out of bed may be a challenge because the height of the bed is too low or it may be difficult to stand. There are products like bed canes or rails that attach to the bed to give you leverage to stand. Bed rails also help remind our loved ones to stay in bed if they are forgetful and are a fall risk. If I had a nickel for every time someone told me their husband falls out of bed I’d be rich. Bed rails help prevent falls during the night and can offer support when transferring from bed to wheelchair or walking. Bed alarms are pads with sensors that alert a care giver when someone at risk for falls gets out of bed. These alarms are simple to use and make it easier for the care giver to sleep knowing that if the person on the mat gets up something will tell you. When transferring someone from a wheelchair or a bed it may be difficult to hold on to the pa-
tient. I have seen techniques that range from pulling the back of the pants so hard they rip to the person assisting with the transfer falling over. There are tools for safe transfers, these can be as simple as a belt that is put around the patient’s waist to a hydraulic lift that picks the patient up with little strain on the care giver. It is important to remember that when you are caring for a loved one you are their support and if you hurt your back both you and the one you are caring for will need help. The tools that are available can be relatively inexpensive or covered by insurance. A gate belt used to prevent pulling on the back of the pants which results in discomfort can be a much better solution and provide the leverage needed to get from a seated position to standing for transfer safely. Finding the product or service that makes your life easier is not complicated. The people at your
local medical supply company should be able to help you with any questions about equipment selection and aids to daily living. At Aging Tree, HealthMed Solutions has many of the products we discussed and the knowledge to recommend solutions to your safety concerns. To quote one of my favorite TV shows “We’re all in this together and I’m pullin’ for ya” (The Red Green Show). If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Aging Tree or any of their approved Business Partners by calling 1-866-3208803. We are all here to help with our expertise to make things safer and create a simpler lifestyle. References: Judy A. Stevens, P. E. (2011, June 10). Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). t is very likely at some point in our lifetime that aging, illness or injury of a family member or friend will result in increased care and equipment needs in the home. Whether this is for a season or extended period this “new normal” presents new needs for safety, products and education for both the consumer and caregivers. The good news is that there are many choices among products to keep us safe, healthy and comfortable at home. To review, there are two main types of products: durable medical equipment and disposable medical supplies to help manage
the basic and medical care needs of ill, elderly and disabled person. Durable Medical Equipment or DME is typically for longer term use and includes: hospital beds;

mobility aids (walkers, scooters, wheelchairs); oxygen concentra-
tors; infusion devices and other specialty items. Disposable medical supplies are typically used once and discarded. This includes: blood sugar test strips for diabetes; incontinence products (catheters, disposable under garments); wound supplies and protective gloves. Frequent areas of conversations with my clients surround the activities of daily living, safety when living alone and surveillance. Since most injuries happen in the bathroom area it will be important to prioritize this area for your medical supply and equipment evaluation. There are two items to consider installing sooner than later. The first is a locking raised toilet seat, with arms if possible. The second is increased safety measures in the tub area. Securely fastened grab bars and non-slip surface within the tub will provide much needed support. When feasible, a walk-in tub will provide significant support to quality of life, skin integrity and reduced risk of falls. Visual monitoring devices or “granny cams” offer the ability to

We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – it could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

check on your loved ones and a certain amount of peace of mind. There are a multitude of video monitoring systems to select from to meet your need and budget. In our home, we chose a basic video monitoring system that provided our loved one peace of mind, when we shared we would be checking on her while we stepped out to run errands. Another device that can provide peace of mind from a surveillance perspective is a bed alarm or sensor pad. These provide an early alert that your loved one is getting out of their bed or wheelchair and needs assistance. The alarm may be kept with them providing an audible reminder to stay in place until help arrives. We are often familiar with seeing wheelchairs and portable oxygen devices but it is typically not until we have a personal need that the safety needs become important. There is a significant training aspect to home medical equipment use. I always recommend that as many caregivers as possible participate in the training which will include: • General Information: Provider services and responsibilities; Contact information during/
outside business hours; Patient Rights and Responsibilities; Grievance Procedures and HIPAA Confidential Health Information • Equipment Use and Care: Purpose, Use and Operation of Device; Review and provision of written instructions; Basic troubleshooting; Equipment malfunction reporting; Cleaning and maintenance; Proper storage and supplies • Safety Information: Environmental, electrical and mobility safety as applicable; Special precautions for safe use of device and Emergency planning Emergency planning presents increased needs when there are mobility challenges and specialized equipment. Notify the Power Company to be placed on a priority list when life saving devices requiring electricity are present in the home. Keep pumps and battery packs plugged in always to keep batteries at full charge. Keep batteries and flashlights within easy access in bedroom, bathroom and throughout the home. For refrigerated medications fill a cooler with ice in the event of a power outage. Attention to fire safety i.e. smoke alarms on each level and
inside room if sleep with the door closed; monthly testing of alarms and battery replacement at least once/year is essential. Familiarize yourself with the use of fire extinguishers and determine an escape route ahead of time. In the event of a serious weather emergency or disaster and you have been advised to evacuate, choose a trusted friend or relative’s home as soon as possible after notification of the impending emergency. Do not delay thinking that you will be able to “ride out the storm” as 911 and emergency response teams will not be able to respond after a certain point in the event of a hurricane, for example, and you will likely be without power and assistance for an undetermined period. If necessary that you and your caregiver relocate to a special needs shelter please know that it will be difficult to provide the same level of care and may be stressful. Confirm with the assigned shelter ahead of time the necessary items (DME and supplies) and/or those items that may not be accommodated. Keeping safe with home medical equipment and supplies requires a small investment in education and planning that will allow you to enjoy the optimal level of health, comfort and safety in your home. It’s true. Being POA is a serious responsibility that is more than just signing papers and paying bills for someone. For example, if you are POA for a parent and you fail to protect the assets from your parent’s long-term care expenses, then your brothers and sisters might successfully sue you for not protecting their inheritance.

care, if that is possible. Florida law says that a POA MUST attempt to preserve the value of the assets by seeking eligibility for a government benefit, program, or assistance. Even if your parent doesn’t qualify, steps can be taken to get them qualified. If the POA fails to take those steps, then those that inherit less might recoup their lost inheritance directly from the POA.
Don’t let this happen to you. Seek the advice of an Elder Care Attorney, who will help you devise a plan to protect your loved one’s life’s savings from an elder’s long-term care costs by structuring their assets to make them eligible for government benefits. INSIDE ADVISOR June Is National Safety Month
The primary focus of the observance is to reduce the leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road and in our homes and communities. Falls are among the most preventable, yet damaging problems leading to injury and death to seniors. According to the National Institute of Health, senior falls result in “a total of 29 million falls, 7 million injuries, 2.8 million trips to the emergency room, 800,000 hospitalizations and 27,000
deaths annually.” This results in an estimated $31 billion in annual Medicare costs, according to a new report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So, what can you and your families do to help ensure your safety and prevent a fall? - Talk to your doctor about falls and fall prevention. Tell your provider if you’ve had a recent fall. Although one out of four older Americans falls each year, less than half tell their doctor. - Do any of your medications cause you dizziness or sleepiness? Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about medications that may make you more likely to fall. - Have your eyes checked by
By Kim Denoff an eye doctor annually. Update eyeglasses as needed. - Participate in programs like Tai Chi that can improve your balance and strengthen your legs. Contact your local Council on Aging for information about what is available in your community. - Make your home safer by getting rid of fall hazards such as rugs, tables, plants, etc. Preventable and unnecessary, survey your risk for falls. Ask for help from your loved ones and do all you can to prevent falls as you age.

Eye Health
Protective Eyewear With summer upon us, everyone is going to be outside doing yard work, home improvements, spring cleaning, barbecuing, opening champagne bottles, and enjoying fireworks. Protecting your eyes from injury is one of the most basic things you can do to keep your vision healthy throughout your life. Most people believe that eye injuries usually occur on the job – at factories and construction sites. But in fact, nearly half of all eye injuries occur at home, doing routine things such as yard work, home repairs, cleaning, and cooking. Wearing protective eyewear can prevent up to 90% of these injuries, but the majority of people do not wear any! Eye protection means more than just wearing the contact lenses or glasses you use for vision correction. The American Academy of
Ophthalmology recommends that every household have at least one pair of protective eyewear that can be worn when doing projects or activities that could create a risk for eye injuries at home. Choose protective eyewear with “ANSI Z87.1” marked on the lens or frame, this means the eyewear meets the American National Standards Institute safety standard. ANSI-approved protective eyewear can be easily purchased from most hardware stores. When an eye injury does occur, have an ophthalmologist examine the eye as soon as possible, even if the injury seems minor at first. If you notice any of these signs, get medical help right away – pain, decreased vision, double vision, decreased eye movement, unusual pupil size or shape, blood, or a cut
By Nishita Patel, MD on the eyelid. For all eye injuries: do not rub or apply pressure to the eye, and do not try to remove an object stuck in the eye. In case of a chemical burn to the eye, immediately flush the eye with plenty of clean water. Delaying medical attention can result in permanent vision loss or blindness. Have a fun and safe summer, and make sure to protect your eyes!

Medical Alert systems allow family, friends, and medical services to be alerted in case of an emergency or fall, 24 hours a day. It usually consists of a base unit and a button necklace, bracelet or small device that the individual wears all of the time. It allows for freedom, as well as peace of mind to the wearer and loved ones. Choosing the right one may be a bit confusing so here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when you are looking for one. In choosing the right system, the first thing you should do is visit the providers Web site, look over it carefully, (and then you still may want to call and speak to them about any questions you may have). Also read as many reviews about the product as you can find (do a Google search like “show me all reviews on <device name>”.

From the Western Wall (whaling wall) to the Basilica of the Annunciation to the birth place of Christ, Israel is not only a destination on the bucket list of many, but truly a Pilgrimage for all. Once in a decade an opportunity comes around to take a pilgrimage that has stood the test of time since the 1600’s Bubonic Plague. This journey is none other than the dramatic and passionate performance of the Passion of Christ in Oberammergau. History tells that the village of Oberammergau was suffering from the Bubonic Plague. The surviving villagers appealed for Divine intervention to save their families. They vowed that if God were to spare them, they would perform a Passion Play every ten years. They say not a single person fell victim to the Plague after that. Keeping their promise, the people of Oberammergau performed the first play in 1634 and have continued to do so throughout the centuries. The residents of Oberammergau will again perform The Passion Play in 2020. We will be there sharing in the magnificence of this performance with several itineraries that showcase the charm and beauty of central Europe. Will you be there? Herbs are a Key to Good Health
I
f you have been a follower of this column for anytime you have come to realize that one of the reasons we do what we do on our farm is to promote healthy living. I frequently talk to people and write about the health benefits of eating fresh local organic produce. Over the past five years since we launched out into growing herbs I have come to realize they offer a lot more than just flavoring for our food. Since many herbs can be grown in our hot summer months when most vegetables languish I thought it would be a good time to look at the benefits of adding herbs into our diets. So over the next couple months I am going to invite you to explore the benefits of herbs and launch you out on the culinary adventure of cooking with them. It seemed fitting to start with basil since it grows well in warm tropical climates like, yes, Florida. Basil originates from the Middle East and has long been grown for medicinal and spiritual purposes. It is considered to be the “holy herb” in many cultures. There are
many varieties of Basil, the most commonly known coming from the Mediterranean region known as Sweet Basil. The leaves may range from a dark green to purple to a reddish pink color depending on the variety. Basil comes in numerous flavors including cinnamon, lemon and orange. Just this summer we are growing a new variety called lime basil with its distinctive lime aroma and flavor. Basil plants produce many chemical substances that are known properties that help prevent disease and promote health. • Basil contains many polyphenolic flavonoids like orientin and vicenin that are known to have anti-oxidant properties. • The plant is also a good source of many essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins critical to optimum health • The leaves contain many essential oils such as eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene, and terpineol that are known to have anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial EXCEPTIONAL Worry-free living properties. SENIOR LIVING Your new adventure begins! • Basil herb contains very Call for a tour today. high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin-A, cryptoxanthin, lutein, and 1825 Ridgewood Ave. Holly Hill, FL 32117 zeaxanthin. by John Joslin against free radicals that play a role in aging and various disease processes. • Zea-xanthin, a flavonoid compound, is selectively absorbed into the retinal macula where it has been found to filter harmful UV rays from reaching the retina. • Basil contains vitamin K which is important for the production of blood clotting factors and plays a vital role in the bone strengthening and mineralization. Wow! All that and more from a modest herb. It is something to think about adding into our diets on a regular basis. So how can you add it in without a lot of trouble? Here is what I do with Basil. Take a handful of basil leaves and gently roll them in your hand to bruise the leaves. Then place them in a gallon of water to sit for several hours or even overnight. Then remove them and you will have some of the best tasting water you have ever drank. You can even go a step further and turn that basil water into basil lemonade with a few lemons. It has become a popular drink on our farm. Folks, those are my thoughts for this month. So get some Basil and make it a good day to have a good day. For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E.
