We are here to guide you and embrace you. We are your senior care advocates. Some decisions are difficult, aren’t they? The world tells us to take “this path,” but God says, “take this one instead.” Sometimes we can't see that if we just allow God to help us, our vision greatly improves. I have experienced both challenging lessons and divine change through trust, and trust is why Aging Tree and its life-changing services continue to flourish. I am blessed and grateful that God is showing me how to help you more through our expanded services online (mygrandmotherswish.com and agingtree.com), on the phone (386-216-4141), in person (just schedule an appointment) and through Legacy Magazine, whose stories and resources you have come to cherish. We are everywhere you are, and a brick and mortar building no longer can contain what we are called to do. We are stronger than ever and remain committed to serving you throughout your senior years. My family’s story is the backdrop to Aging Tree’s origin and current metamorphosis and it’s illustrated in this month’s Legacy article on page 8. I am proud to share the lessons I’ve learned through assisting my loved ones through their aging needs. You will read about the reason we do what we do here and understand more about how love envelopes it all. Fog turns to clear skies and paths are revealed when we trust divine change. Thank you for taking this journey with us and for giving us this opportunity to serve you! By expanding our mission, we are becoming more fully the change we want to see in the world.

We hopped into the car and drove to NOLA two days early to ensure that we would make it in time. With all this extra time in the Big Easy, we were given the opportunity to really enjoy some leisurely tours and experiences. We took a haunted night tour that was more educational than scary, a delicious foodie tour, and then we really walked around soaking in the atmosphere. But this long-standing coffee shop is so much more. Beignets are deep friend dough balls of deliciousness covered with powdered sugar. Sound like a doughnut? It pretty much is— the most amazing hot doughnut you could ask for. Paired with one of their famed coffees with chicory black or made Au Lait, it’s a scrumptious and sugar filled breakfast. up, do as they promised, or if they did, they would be inhospitable or flat-out rude to our family. My brother and I would stay with my grandmother from time to time to give our grandfather a break. On one occasion, my grandmother said something to me that would forever change my life. She looked at me intently, struggled for the right words, and then blurted them out as if she’d quickly forget them if she didn’t. She said, “Corey, honey, I know I am sick and your papa is having a hard time. You have to find a way to help people that get like this.” I was touched, stunned, and committed. I promised her that day I would do something to help, I just didn’t know what that was. When my grandfather would leave while we stayed with my grandmother, he wouldn’t tell us what he was doing. He’d say, “I’m just running some errands.” What we didn’t know at the time was that he was visiting his own doctors about his medical concerns and not sharing that information with us. a time when the internet couldn’t provide instant solutions, my brother and I felt powerless to assist. Finally, my grandfather simply couldn’t help her anymore. It was decided that she needed another place to live, and moved her to a nursing home in Orlando that specialized in Alzheimer’s care. After we moved her, he told us what the doctors already knew: He was dying of cancer. Soon thereafter, my grandfather said something eerily similar to what my grandmother had said to me: “Corey, you’re a smart man. You saw what was happening. If you can help other people not ever have to go through this, you have to try.” In that moment, I made a firm promise to fulfill that request. My grandfather died only a few months later in the same nursing home my grandmother had moved into. He finally had surrendered; he didn’t have to fight for both of them anymore. He had been granted his rest. My grandmother lived for another few years in the final stages of this horrible disease. We visited her often, making sure her lips

were moisturized, that staff was feeding her and to simply sit next to her and rub her. She couldn’t talk. We never knew whether she was in pain and it haunted us. Most of the time, she could only lie in a fetal position on the bed. Our prayers became simple: “God, please take her.”

Aging Happy - Part 3, 3-part series

“Worries” of Older Americans By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP

Part 3: False Confidence, When to Consider Giving Up Driving and our Desire to Remain Independent.

I

n this issue you’ll find the final part of the 3-part series entitled Aging Happy: Top 10 “Worries” of Older Americans. Here we will address the topics of False Confidence, When to Consider Giving Up Driving and our Desire to Remain Independent. I'm sure I told you that already! Sound familiar? You may have, though older adults are more likely to have what is referred to as “destination memory failures” - forgetting who they've shared or not shared information with, according to a study led by Baycrest's Rotman Research Institute. "What we've found is that older adults tend to experience more destination amnesia than younger adults," states lead investigator and cognitive scientist Dr. Nigel Gopie, who led the study with experts in memory and attention, Drs. Fergus Craik and Lynn Hasher. Ironically, after making these memory errors older adults may remain highly confident in their false beliefs. Do you more often experience forgetting a memory you wanted to share? Penn State psychologists suggest that the problem may be actually be “misremembering”. In a study, the researchers found that as people age, they may be more likely to rely on a type of memory called “schematic memory” that helps them remember the gist of

an event, but not necessarily the details. This inability to remember details, though, could lead to difficulty in distinguishing between a memory of something that really happened and something that a person thought happened, but did not - a false memory. At every age the brain strives to “complete the story” and it is helpful to understand how information processing may be changing. The use of written lists, detailed calendar and other supports to organize information, rather than relying on memory alone is a solution at any age. Have a conversation with a trusted friend, family member and your health care provider if this is something you or a loved one is experiencing to optimize the opportunities for support and minimize the unwanted effects of false memories or even false confidence. Initiating a conversation about safe driving can be a challenging area of false confidence with an older driver, especially a parent. Information related to many facets of senior driving can be found at https:// seniordriving.aaa.com. Preserving personal freedom and mobility, while ensuring safety on the road, is enhanced by attention to open and respectful communication; keeping the conversation between you and the driver rather than a family intervention; maintaining

privacy and avoiding assumptions with a focus on safe driving and working together. This website includes a Driver Planning Agreement to use as a conversation guide and plan for addressing changes in driving abilities before they become a concern. If you notice that you are beginning to experience some natural age-related changes, there may be the opportunity to adjust your driving habits to keep driving safely. Drivers 65 Plus features a 15-question self-rating driving assessment exercise designed to help examine driving performance and make better informed decisions about when to get behind the wheel and when to seek other forms of transportation. DriveSharp (https:// www.drivesharp.com) is a computer-based software with three interactive exercises clinically proven to help see more; improve the ability to monitor multiple moving objects like pedestrians, bicyclists other cars; and increase processing speed. Professional assessments may also be indicated and include Clinical Driving Assessments which are conducted by Occupational Therapist Driving Rehabilitation Specialists (OT-DTRs). These are suitable for people with disabilities or individuals with one or more medical conditions that affect driving. Driving skills evaluators (DSEs) conduct evaluations to help identify any weaknesses in driving

skills and determine if supplemental training can further reduce driving risk. Every time you get behind the wheel of a car, you must decide how to react to other vehicles and drivers, traffic signs and signals, highway conditions and vehicle performance, often with the need to take quick action. Just like a routine medical checkup it’s important to assess any changes in skills and be aware of everything you can do to be safe on the road. It is likely no surprise that the majority, an estimated 90 percent according to recent surveys, would prefer to live independently and for as long as possible. Independence requires a level of physical and cognitive function that can be difficult to maintain especially if there is a disability. A recent National Institute on Aging (NAI) analysis notes that 40 percent of Americans over 65 fall into this category. Healthy brain function is a vital factor in preserving independence.

Look to your nutrition to help your brain work at maximum efficiency. It is generally recommended to include as many fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and healthy fats as possible while minimizing saturated fats, sugar sweetened processed foods and beverages. It can be confusing with all the nutritional plans available, though the Mediterranean style eating plan is associated with a lower incidence of cognitive decline. Staying engaged mentally and socially is also important. Take action to avoid health problems that will threaten your ability to live on your own. more likely to break. Share also if you are feeling unsteady on your feet. People age 55 and older who are unsteady have more than twice the risk of an osteoporosis related fracture compare to those with better balance, according to a Swedish study. Poor balance is one of the leading reasons for falls according to Dr. Marvin Lipman, M.D., Consumer Reports chief medical adviser. He shares two quick selftests to gauge your balance: Heelto-toe walking (taking steps with one foot directly in front of another) and standing on one leg for at least 30 seconds. Check out your local YMCA for a “Moving for Better Balance” program and/or talk to your primary care provider for a prescription for physical therapy to help strengthen your muscles and improve your balance. If you have a chronic medical condition it is important to attend all your scheduled appointments. Routine screenings are an important strategy to help protect independence for everyone at any age or condition. In addition to your yearly wellness visit have your vision and hearing checked at least once every two years or every time you notice a change. When left untreated these impairments will increase the challenges of daily living. The opportunity to stay engaged with family and friends, have mobility and vitality while enjoying optimal independence may feel like an elusive goal though we have begun to unpack several of the key factors that will support this goal. The bottom line is that it will be important to acknowledge when you want and/or need help. A limitation or disability may not be an inability. Having an open mind and being willing to accept help will go far to make your personal vision of independence a reality. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Aging Tree or any of their approved Business Partners by calling 1-866-320-8803.

INSIDE ADVISOR Legal False Confidence: Is Your Will/Trust Done, or Done RIGHT? Most people think that filling in blanks on a Will, Trust, Power of Attorney, etc. is all that’s necessary. Although those documents are “done,” I often find that they’re not done “RIGHT.” Common wisdom is that a Will, Trust, Power of Attorney, and Healthcare Power of Attorney are boilerplate documents, and if you use death beneficiaries, there won’t be probate. And while that is sometimes true, there is so much more to consider. It’s important to decide what risks you wish to avoid

after your spouse and/or children receive their inheritance. Unfortunately, most estate planning and elder law attorneys don’t help you with that, which results in high costs, delay, and plans gone astray after you pass. For example, if your spouse remarries (and we all know that happens often), the new spouse is usually entitled to 30% of everything your spouse owned at the time s/he passed, even if the Will says otherwise. If a child divorces after you pass, s/he could lose all or some of their inheritance. If a child runs into financial trouble after you pass, s/he could lose their entire inheritance. Your child’s former spouse could be in control of your minor

grandchild’s inheritance if your child passes away before spending his or her inheritance. These are only a few of the risks you take when you just get your documents “done.” If you want to ensure that your planning is DONE RIGHT, then you should see an estate planning or elder law attorney that helps you understand the risks and decide what risks you want to take – and which you don’t. Scott A. Selis is the 2016 Elder Law Attorney of the Year with offices in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. He serves on the Legislative and Medicaid Committees of the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section.

INSIDE ADVISOR

A Day Without Dad: Coping with Loss on Father’s Day Father’s Day is a time to celebrate and recognize our dads and father figures, however, it can be an emotionally painful holiday if your father has passed away. If the loss of your father is making you dread Father’s Day, VITAS Healthcare, the leaders of end-of-life care and experts in bereavement services, offers some suggestions to help manage your loss while at the same time, honoring him: Memorialize him There are a number of ways to remember our deceased loved ones beyond tangible memorials like a monument or plaque. Consider donating to a charity

in his name, planting a tree, designing a special gravestone, or making a memory book. The options are many. Acknowledge the holiday It is almost impossible to avoid in-store displays promoting Father’s Day, advertisements on TV, and chatter on social media about plans for celebration. Acknowledging the holiday can help you emotionally prepare for it, which in turn can help promote healthy healing. Seek support Although you may want to be alone, isolating yourself on Father’s Day may make you feel

worse. Try to spend the day with someone who cares about you. Have dinner with friends, go see a movie with family members, or attend a bereavement group meeting. VITAS Healthcare has nearly four decades of experience providing grief counseling. Learn more about our bereavement services by calling VITAS Bereavement Manager Vonshelle Beneby at 386.366.6100. For more information about hospice care or end-of-life care options, call VITAS Healthcare at 866.759.6695 or visit VITAS.com.

Sometimes, Father’s Day Isn’t About Celebrating. It’s about Coping. Caring. Remembering.

Do you have only cherished memories of your father on Father’s Day? VITAS® Healthcare’s suggests doing something inspiring on Father’s Day to honor his legacy. Plant a tree. Donate to a charity. Create a memory book. Volunteer on his behalf. Learn coping skills at monthly grief support group meetings in Volusia and Flagler counties. Call VITAS Bereavement Specialists Vonshelle Beneby or Yanique Tomlinson at 386.366.6167 to reserve a spot. Make your dad proud.

Social Security Social Security Helps You Care for Seniors INSIDE ADVISOR

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15. This is an opportunity for everyone, all over the world, to voice their opposition to abuses inflicted on some of the

most vulnerable members of our society. For more than 80 years, Social Security has provided for the elderly as part of our everyday mission. Sometimes a family member is incapable of representing themselves due to health reasons. Generally, we look for family or friends to serve as representative payees. Social Security's Representative Payment Program helps our beneficiaries who are incapable of managing their Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. You can read more about the program at www.socialsecurity.gov/ payee.

Family members and caregivers can protect the older people they love with help from the Representative Payee Interdisciplinary Training series. The training

was developed in partnership with the Administration on Aging within the Administration for Community Living and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

By Harry Martinez Social Security Manager in DeLand, FL It educates people and organizations about the roles and responsibilities of serving as a representative payee, elder abuse and financial exploitation, and effective ways to monitor and safely conduct business with the banking community. It also teaches ways to recognize the changes in an adult or senior’s ability to make sound financial decisions. You can view our series of videos about this training at www. socialsecurity.gov/payee. Protecting the ones you love is part of securing today and tomorrow. And we’re here for you. You can always access our website and online services at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Dental Implants vs. Mini Dental Implants

Dental Implants Vs Mini Dental Implants, Which is By Dr. John A. Whitsitt, Right for Me? D.D.S., F.A.C.P. Many people lose one or more teeth from their mouths. They may lose teeth as the result of dental decay, traumatic injuries to the facial region, or through extraction due to inherent difficulties with the tooth. Dental implants represent one of the more effective ways to replace missing teeth. They provide a permanent solution that functions as close to a real tooth as possible and there are two main types of dental implants available to patients: Traditional Dental Implant The purpose of the traditional dental implant is to restore both the function and form of a missing tooth within the mouth. to have successful implants for the remainder of their lives. The drawback with traditional implants is that they require a decent amount of bone structure.

We use the latest in restorative techniques to ensure that your smile is as functional as it is beautiful.

How are Mini Dental Implants Different? As their name suggests, mini implants are smaller than their traditional counterparts. Patients with mini implants will often experience slightly more stress upon the jaw bone and longer healing times because of the different weight distribution. They can be used to mount full or partial dentures, crowns and other restorations designed to make a smile beautiful and functional. JUNE 2018 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803

QUICK TIPS

Staying at Home

Steps to Stay Safe on the Road for Older Adults Older adults can take several steps to stay safe on the road, including: ● Exercising regularly to increase strength and flexibility. ● Asking your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines–both prescription and over-the counter–to reduce side effects and interactions. ● Having eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year. Wear glasses and corrective lenses as required. ● Driving during daylight and in good weather.

Download our FREE Mobile App.

● Finding the safest route with well-lit streets, intersections with left turn arrows, and easy parking.

(Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy)

● Planning your route before you drive. ● Leaving a large following distance behind the car in front of you. ● Avoiding distractions in your car, such as listening to a loud radio, talking on your cell phone, texting, and eating. ● Considering potential alternatives to driving, such as riding with a friend or using public transit, which you can use to get around.

Recipe

Best BBQ Ribs without the Grill!

By Lisa Buckner

Barbecue flavor without the grill! Not being much of an outdoor chef, I prefer the confides of my cozy kitchen. These ribs have all the barbecue flavor and I like the tenderness. I know they will be cooked thoroughly, and don't have to be monitored so closely. If desired, they can be put on the grill for a final cooking and the sauce added after.

DIRECTIONS:

Serves -5 per slab of Ribs Prep time 30 minutes Bake time 3 hours or all day in slow cooker

Recipe: Best No Grill BBQ Ribs

Have butcher cut ribs into two bone pieces From the Kitchen of: Mama Lisa or cut yourself Ingredients: Sprinkle paprika on rib pieces Serves: 4-5 per slab of Ribs Brown ribs in heavy fry pan with ½ a stick of butter per slab of ribs on stove top, a few 1 or 2 or more slabs of ribs depending on your pieces at a time. Turn over and even brown cooker size or number of guests Sonny’s barbecue sauce or your sauce of choice on sides Place browned ribs in a large baking pan – I 1 cup lemon juice ¼ cup apple cider vinegar like to use the old turkey roaster pan Once all browned and in pan, pour lemon 1 Tbsp paprika juice and vinegar on ribs and cover pan with ½ stick butter per slab of ribs tin foil Bake at 300 (slow oven) for one and a half hours. Turn once or twice during cooking cycle el After an hour and a half, take out of the oven and either drain Healthy Mors juice or place ribs in another pan or slow cooker. If doing large quantities, I put in an electric turkey roaster. Tip of the Day! Cover with barbecue sauce and cook for another hour and a half at 325 or the rest of the day on low in slow cooker. You can e direction can't change th n adjust "I check and turn ribs over once during cook cycle or leave alone in ca f the wind, but I reach my o slow cooker. When cooking time is up, check ribs and if pulling ys my sails to alwa mmy Dean off bone, they are done! Cook until that is the case. tination." - Ji
