he second half of the 19th century is noted for some of the most successful mining on record. These gold and silver rush years made names for a number of soon-to-be famous miners, many of whom were of Irish and Irish American birth. The term “Luck of the Irish,” was born at that time, though it’s really a back-handed compliment. (If you’re “lucky,” do you use your brains or work hard? Being lucky is easy, the phrase implies. Anyone could do it!) Do you believe in luck? For my part, I believe we largely create our own luck in this life, inevitably helped by the good fortune and blessings we find along our journey. We can help create good fortune, too, by learning better ways to do things, applying information to our lives that help us create more opportunities for “luck” to appear. At Aging Tree, our mission always has been to help others, and to do so by using information based on our experiences and gained through partnerships with trusted experts in senior care industries. Along with your other family and clinicians, use the resources of Aging Tree to give you more confidence in your decision-making, and get you on the proactive side of situations (instead of reactive). Let this confidence and your newly found resources pave the way for more good fortune – more good luck – to come your way. In this issue of Aging Tree Illustrated, we’re honing in on several topics to help you do just that. This month, we finish up our three-part series, “How to Pay for Senior Care,” with information about how to use reverse mortgages and trusts as funding sources. We have had a lot of families inquire about this subject, and although these two funding sources are not ideal for everyone, they might fit your situation perfectly, and increased your chance for good fortune in your golden years. And, what’s luck without the right frame of mind when you find it? Our history buff, Carol Grigas Ph.D., provides a wonderful article how we can use the nostalgia around us to bring joy into our lives, while Cheree Albert MSN, CRNP, CPNP, gives us tools to help us learn to be proactive with the food we eat celebrating National Nutrition Month. Once again this month, our inside advisors provide wonderful articles on two important subjects: health and finances. In the spirit of shedding some light on National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, Kim Denoff shares an inspiring piece to help us understand the importance of screenings. Also in this issue, attorney Scott Selis provides helpful information on understanding how to control our assets for safe keeping through a Revocable Irrevocable Trust. We also packed this edition with a few more articles about pet care services, how to keep those pesky bugs out of your garden this spring, eye care, and understanding how Easter Seals can help those with limited hearing. And, last but not least, get more details about the popular Aging Tree Travel Adventures trip to Savannah and Charleston this May! Until we meet again, “May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face,” and may your days be brightened with a little Irish Luck!

How to Pay For Senior Care
Part 3 of 3: Reverse Mortgages and Trusts as Funding Sources for Senior Care
I
t may not be the most pleasant experience to think about, but it’s one of the most important financial issues you’ll face during your retirement: How will you pay for senior care if your family can’t take care of you? Several funding methods exist today to pay for senior care. The most common are assets (cash), insurance (long-term care insurance or life insurance), Veterans Administration benefits or Medicaid, reverse mortgages, and trusts. In this third article in Aging Tree Illustrated’s three-part series, “How to Pay for Senior Care,” we are focusing on paying for senior care with reverse mortgages and trusts. (Be sure to visit www.agingtree.com for the January and February 2016 issues that include the first two articles in this series, in which we discuss cash, insurance, VA benefits and Medicaid.)
The information presented in these articles should be used as a navigational tool, and should not replace professional counsel by your trusted attorney, financial planner, insurance agent, and/or accountant. Paying for senior care is a very real challenge and concern for retiring senior Americans across the country. Depending upon a person’s or family’s assets, ability to care for each other, health and other factors, the options vary in price and opportunity. Let’s review the basics and discuss funding options that may be available to you, including reverse mortgages and trusts. Know your starting point. There are several important steps that experts recommend you attend to before exploring funding options for senior care. These include ensuring you are 1) getting the most from your Social Security benefits; 2) checking your veterans’ aid and attendance benefits, if applicable; 3) and assuring your finan-

By Vickie Pleus cial records are in order. These financial records may include your sources of income, assets, Social Security and Medicare benefits, insurance policy details, bank information, tax returns, wills, mortgages and debts, just to name a few. Understand the definition of “senior care.” Senior care, as referenced in this article, includes independent living, assisted living, continuing care retirement communities, memory care facilities, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Get a feel for the costs. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (per 2010 statistics, the most recent available), senior care costs range from about $3,300 per month to $7,000 per month: • $205 per day or $6,235 per month for a semi-private room in a nursing home • $229 per day or $6,965 per month for a private room in a nursing home • $3,293 per month for care in an assisted living facility (for a one-bedroom unit) Home healthcare aides, homemaker services, and services in adult day health care centers cost less. Know the primary funding categories. In general, there are four primary funding sources to assist in paying for senior care: 1) government programs, including Medicaid and veterans benefits; 2) insurance coverage, including life insurance and long-term care insurance; 3) private assistance from foundations or pharmaceutical companies; and 4) and personal property and assets, including a family’s resources and home equity. Now, let’s discuss two senior-care funding options utilized by many seniors today: reverse mortgages and trusts. cont. pg 9
|8|
Reverse mortgages as a funding source for senior care Most seniors spend the majority of their adult years paying off a mortgage and enjoying the equity they’ve secured in their home. If you own your home and are faced with needing to fund senior care or memory care, securing a reverse mortgage on your house may be a viable and valuable option. A reverse mortgage provides a tax-free flow of income that’s essentially a loan against the equity you’ve built in your home. The loan does not need to be repaid until the house is sold, the owner(s) moves out, or the owner dies. In a reverse mortgage arrangement, you continue to own your home as long as you or your spouse (the other homeowner) occupies the home as your primary residence. There are no restrictions on how you use the income from your reverse mortgage. Thus, many seniors take out reverse mortgages to pay for senior care. Further, any type of senior care can be funded in this way, including in-home care. And, reverse mortgages do not affect Medicare or Social Security benefits, and there are no firm income or credit-score requirements to qualify. Aging Tree half page Ad_Layout 1 2/19/14 10:45 AM Page 1
At the point in time in which the homeowners no longer live in the residence, the loan is due and payable. But, contrary to popular belief, says Mortgage Specialist Jim Kearns, the homeowners’ heirs are not obligated to pay the loan. “(Concern that heirs will have to pay back the loan) is the biggest pushback we get from homeowners considering a reverse mortgage,” says Kearns, who specializes in reverse mortgages with FBC Mortgage LLC in Longwood. “They think, ‘Mom and dad are going to die and we’ll be stuck with a big bill,’ but it’s not true.” Kearns says heirs have three options in handling reverse mortgage debt. First, they can qualify for a mortgage on the home, pay off the existing reverse mortgage, and own the home. They can sell the home and receive its remaining equity. Or, they can walk away from the home and give it to the lender/bank. Why reverse mortgages aren’t ideal for some homeowners Consider the fees of a reverse mortgage if you’re looking into this funding path for your long-term care. Reverse mortgages can be expensive; closing costs can run higher than conventional mortgages. This is largely because fees such as mortgage insurance and title insurance must be paid
upfront; they cannot be tacked on to mortgage payments, as they are in traditional (forward) mortgage arrangements. Are you an ideal candidate for a reverse mortgage? If you’re a senior in good health who’s living independently, or a married couple in good health, or one in a couple who can live in the home while the other moves into a facility, a reverse mortgage may be a good fit. However, if you anticipate you and your spouse may need to move into a senior-care facility, a reverse mortgage may be a more costly option. Get the facts about reverse mortgages If you’re considering a reverse mortgage to help fund your senior-care needs, but feel a bit unsure or skeptical, you’ll be directed to talk to a HUD (Housing and Urban Development) counselor to before you can start the process anyway, says Kearns. “I produce a 50-page counseling package on reverse mortgages (to prospective clients), including a list of HUD counselors in our area,” he says. “They receive counseling from the HUD representative first.” Jim Kearns welcomes inquiries about reverse mortgages and puts his years of experience to use serving homeowners throughout Central Florida. Another senior-care funding option: Trusts (revocable/irrevocable) Barbara Coenson, an Elder Law attorney based in Lake Mary, offers several estate planning and Elder Law services in the area, including revocable and irrevocable trusts. She says irrevocable trusts are legal arrangements that can redirect a client’s assets years in advance of their need for government-funded senior care assistance, such as Medicaid, without affecting the senior’s eligibility when that time comes. Coenson explains the difference between “irrevocable trusts” and “revocable trusts.” “In estate planning, many clients will place their assets into a revocable living trust – assets that are put in trust for a minor, a person with special needs, or as a holding place for assets to avoid a guardianship situation,” she says. “In a revocable trust, the person who set up the trust is usually the trustee, the beneficiary, and the third party – all three parties in the trust. They use and benefit from the trust while they’re alive,” says Coenson. ReverseMortgageAd10x6.125.pdf 2:30 PM Essentially, she adds, in1 a10/6/15 revocable
trust, the person has control of the trust and can benefit from it; they can put money in and take it out. An irrevocable trust, on the other hand, is a common pre-planning strategy for Medicaid, according to Coenson. Placing your assets in an irrevocable trust can protect them for a number of years while also maintaining your eligibility for Medicaid assistance.
Where do you go from here? The good news about funding senior care is there are many options to do so, and chance favors the prepared mind. Essentially, in a revocable trust, the person has control of the trust and can benefit from it; they can put money in and take it out. Need a trust? Seek professional financial and legal guidance “There are many different types of trusts,” says Coenson. “A trust can make sure a surviving spouse is well cared for during his or her life, and a trust can also help reduce or eliminate estate taxes and protect some assets.” Her firm helps clients create trusts that best meets their goals. LIVING WELL BRANCH:
March is National Nutrition Month
Let’s Celebrate Your Nutritional Skillpowers
I
t is a wonderful coincidence that March is National Nutrition Month as well as the one-year anniversary of the Living Well Branch. Our nutritional habits are key to our ability to have the vitality to live well as we endeavor to age gracefully and joyfully. I love that we are becoming increasingly more aware of the power of our food choices and there is more we can accomplish in this area. It breaks my heart when I hear my Prime Time clients initially say that they really don’t think it makes a lot of sense to make any changes at their age since it’s “too late and the damage is done”. Suffice it to say that we correct that myth pretty quickly. I can certainly understand where this belief system comes from, as it is only in the last few years that we have begun to understand how to harness the power of epigenetics. Dr. Katz MD, board certified specialist and founding director of the Yale Prevention Center, speaks about the science of epigenetics in Disease Proof: The Remarkable Truth about What Makes Us Well. This science reveals how genes are influenced by their environment which quite simply is YOU! He adds that when you use your fork to feed yourself more wholesome foods and put your body into motion you will have the opportunity for immediate benefits, including better mood and mental clarity, improved sleep, more energy, less pain and stress, and a greater overall sense of well-being. Who would like more of this in their life? If you are thinking that you already have a chronic condition and this really does not apply to you, please be encouraged and find hope in the fact that is truly does! Your condition and prognosis will most certainly be better if you take good care of yourself and although for some even the “optimal use of your feet and forks may not be enough…and may need medication to treat their condition…healthier lifestyle habits will allow the medication to work more effectively”, according to Dr. Katz. Of course, we all know someone who was able to
make progress toward weaning from their medications as a result of their willpower and skillpower. Let’s celebrate National Nutrition Month and talk briefly about several nutritional skillpowers. One quick disclosure: In my practice the daily and ongoing sustainability factor in real life is the underlying foundation for the
nutritional goals/plans my clients design. There are no fad diets, rapid weight loss, quick fixes - especially those that claim no need to exercise, a counter full of synthetic lab created supplements, rigid menus and schedules and severely limited quantities and food selections (except when medically indicated). Since the general consensus among the medical community and associations like the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Foundation, National Stroke Association and others recommend that you get your vitamins and minerals from food, I will be sharing the guidelines adapted from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In general, eating a variety of foods from all the food groups will help you get the variety of nutrients your body needs as you age. Supplemental nutrition assistance programs may be available in your community if this is a challenge for you or someone you love. The Dietary Guidelines recommend eating half your plate fruits and vegetables at every meal. Fresh or frozen offer a nutritional advantage over canned. Select more dark green vegetables like leafy greens, collard greens, turnip greens, spinach, broccoli, and peas. Orange vegetables like carrots,

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP sweet potatoes and butternut squash are power packed choices like the dark greens and both are absorbed even better when eaten with a little healthy fat. Vary your protein choices with more fish, beans and legumes. Rinse canned beans and add to salads, soups, rice dishes and casseroles. Grass fed meats can offer a nutritional advantage. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice or pastas every day. Consume plant based milks preferably or low fat dairy milk, yogurt or cheeses that are fortified with vitamin D every day. Rather than a low fat diet, eat a right fat diet rich in healthy omega 3 fats, avoiding trans fats that may be hidden in heavily processed foods and oils. Remember the label loophole that allows for a food to be labeled as “trans fat free” if the serving size has less than .5 milligrams of trans fat per serving. Who really ate only 7 chips before? Power pack your food choices with more nutrients per calorie. This is the science behind the 16 Superfoods recommended by Dr. William Sears, author of Prime Time Health: A Scientifically Proven Plan for Feeling Younger and Living Longer. These are: seafood, wild salmon, broccoli, spinach, red onions, garlic, berries, tomatoes, beans and lentils, oatmeal, pomegranate juice, flaxseed meal, tofu, yogurt and avocado. A Sentimental Yearning For the Past
Create Your Own Nostalgia Driven Corner

eed a mood change? Want to connect to others? Eager to cope with a current challenge? Try a little nostalgia! Find a retro fashion item, listen to oldies but goodies tunes, and let these musical and sensory stimuli bring back fond memories. While in past centuries nostalgia was considered a disease – an extreme form of homesickness, nostalgia is identified by a sentimental yearning for the past – something that is irretrievable. Despite the regrettable fact that the past cannot be brought back, nostalgia is everywhere: “in popular culture, in new museums and exploding museum attendance, and in ads,
ety. While historians fret over the decline of a unified American history certified by experts and spelled out in written texts, a significant new study published by the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin reveals that time spent reminiscing makes people more optimistic. Such an outcome is similar to earlier scientific studies and demonstrates that remembering the past does not suggest a fear of the future, nor will recalling the ‘good old days’ necessarily make you sad. Retro is Now Many aspects of U.S. culture now have a broad range of products that are retro, that are new products but evoke specific

retro fashions, and the booming antiques market and TV programs like Downton Abbey,” according to historian David Lowenthal. Why are Americans so swept up in nostalgia? Since the 1970s, according to historians, Americans have used nostalgia to deal with the pervasive social and cultural changes filtering through soci-
modes, motifs, techniques, and materials of the past. Retro is not styles and items from the past; retro refers to new things that display characteristics of the past – it’s nostalgia made real. It is mostly the recent past that retro seeks to recapture, focusing on the products, fashions and artistic styles produced since the Industrial era in the 19th century, like the manual typewrit-

Man and Thornton Wilder’s stage play Our Town also exemplify this theme. Also re-envisioned are small town institutions like the barber shop and the drug store/soda fountain and ice cream parlor, the latter in such businesses as the Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour chain with its 1890s theme. Retro fashion reconfigures clothing from the 1940–1990s. Especially popular are gar| 16 |
ments and accessories used in an exaggerated way in combination with the latest styles. Some examples from the 1950s are leather handbags, Poodle skirts, oversized sunglasses, fedoras, funky jackets and shoes, small neckties, chiffon scarves, sport equipment, and skinny jeans. Styles inspired by the film stars of the 1940s and 1950s, like bright red lipstick and hairstyles such as pompadours, ponytails, and ducktails, are part of this look. The sports market has not escaped the nostalgia trend. An example is 1970s and 1980s sportswear typified by sport jackets, jerseys and T-shirts with former logos of the old teams. Designed to evoke the old days, they use lines in the sides and combinations of colors characteristic of those times. Brands such as Adidas, Puma, and Nike have created divisions that specialize in retro products. Most professional and amateur clubs also re-edit their former garments to raise their sales, as do college sports teams. In the late 2000s, neon and pastel colors, a fad associated with 1980s fashion, enjoyed a revival. In the 2010s, fabrics and patterns ubiquitous to the 1990s, such as crushed velvet and floral, are making a comeback. Dr. Martens, a shoe brand popular in the 1990s, also sold well in the early 2010s, making 2011–12 the British company’s best selling season ever. To create your own nostalgia driven corner – perhaps to honor the memory of a parent or spouse or to record your own memories – consider assembling a collection of items related to the history, geography, folklore and cultural heritage of the U.S. Quite a bit of material falls within that definition of Americana: paintings, prints and drawings; license plates or entire vehicles, household objects, tools and weapons; flags, plaques and statues, and more. The items involved need not be old – or expensive, but need to have the appropriate associations. The Atlantic suggested looking for your artifacts “at your average antique store—things like needle-pointed pillows,

INSIDE ADVISOR - LEGAL Have you ever heard of a Revocable Irrevocable Trust? I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t. It’s actually a term I created to describe a type of trust that can be used by people who plan far enough in advance to help them qualify for certain government benefits, while staying in control of their assets. So many people try to qualify for government benefits by “giving” their assets to one or more loved ones for safe keeping. The idea is that the loved one will, in turn, give them assets when they need them. But, what if they can’t give the asset back? What would you do in this situation? What I’m referring to here is not a scenario wherein a loved one is breaking a confidence by refusing to give the money back. Rather, I’m referring to a scenario wherein a loved one cannot give it back; they don’t have it anymore even though they didn’t use it on themselves.
How can that happen? This can occur – and does occur – for several reasons, including: • The loved one dies in an accident; • The loved one is sued; • The loved one becomes incapacitated; • The loved one gets divorced; or • The loved one files for bankruptcy. All of these real-life situations (risks) can result in your loved one losing your money. You can avoid the situation of not having access to your assets by putting them into a Revocable Irrevocable Trust. You create this trust by using an ElderCare Lawyer. (Most Elder Law attorneys don’t know how to create a Revocable Irrevocable Trust.) Through a Revocable Irrevocable Trust, you can be in control of the assets in the trust, list who you want to control the assets in the trust when you are no longer able to do so, and change who is in control of the assets if needed, all the while receiving the interest that the trust-owned assets produce. Choose who receives the assets after you die, and have the flexibility to change that designation if you wish, too.
By Scott A. Selis, Esq. Further, in a Revocable Irrevocable Trust, you can choose how to invest the assets in your trust, including using Money Market accounts, checking account, Certificates of Deposit, or other investment types. The language of a Revocable Irrevocable Trust is different than an Irrevocable Revocable Trust in that it includes language you cannot change; language that’s included for the purposes of qualifying for benefits. But, you’ll always be able to get the assets when you need them. The Revocable Irrevocable Trust: It’s worth considering. Scott Selis is a lawyer at Chiumento Selis Dwyer in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. He is a member of the Joint Public Policy Task Force for the Elderly and is Co-Chair of the Florida Bar Elder Law Section’s Legislative Committee. Reach him at 386-868-KEEP(5337), ext. 22.

INSIDE ADVISOR - HEALTH WISE
Be HEALTH WISE in 2016 March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. This is a topic that is extremely close to my heart. In September of last year, my husband, Dr. Frank Denoff died from colon cancer. His brave, hard fought battle began at his recommended 50 year old screening colonoscopy. Going to sleep laughing and thinking his screening was simply a formality; he woke up to the words, “you have cancer”. He had no symptoms, didn’t drink, didn’t smoke, ate well, and worked out every day. He would spend the next 10 years educating his patients and speaking at public engagements about the importance of colorectal screening. “Cancer can happen to anyone”, he would say.
His dedicated physicians treated his Stage IV metastatic colon cancer with aggressive chemo therapy, multiple surgeries, and radiation. In his case, he already had cancer at the 50 year old screening. However, it was that screening that created the awareness he had cancer and that he believed allowed him 10 more years
By Kim Denoff
Let us help you be Health Wise!
According to the CDC, “Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. If everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, at least 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided.”
Kim Denoff, Owner of Advanced Imaging and Administrator for Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Orange City. In the medical imaging business for 18 years, Kim has experienced healthcare from the perspective of patient, provider and spouse of a provider. Reach her at 386-774-7226 or visit advancedorthosportsmed.com
If you are between the ages of 50 to 75, please see your doctor and discuss when you should be screened. We are fortunate to have highly skilled GI doctors in our community. Please call them today and make an appointment. Get screened. It could save your life.

Trusted Care For Your Furry Friends
W
hile you may have the option of hiring the kid next door to feed your cat and walk your dog while you’re gone, or kenneling your pet for a longer period of time, they’re not always the best alternatives. Not trusting that your home is secure in your absence, or how your furry friend is being cared for in a group setting, may leave you uneasy. Many families have found great comfort in connecting with Dawn Salvaggio of Home Pet Care Services, LLC, a pet-sitting service that specializes in pets with special needs. Home Pet Care Services offers daily or overnight pet-sitting services, transportation, outpatient pet care (such as post-operative care or regimented medical care), geriatric pet care, and dog walking. And, services are provided in the comfort of your own home – your pet’s most familiar and comfortable space.
Dawn has more than 20 years’ experience in caring for animals, and holds several animal-care certifications, including pet first aid and CPR. Her experience as an emergency and day practice veterinary technician helps her keenly understand animals’ needs, and makes her skillful in providing their care. Home Pet Care Services is licensed, bonded and insured. Not only will she care for your pets, but as she visits your home to do so, she also gives attention to your home, helping it looked lived in while you’re out! Little touches like taking in the trash, watering house plants, turning on the lights, and bringing in the mail, help her clients feel comfortable when she’s on the job. “I used Home Pet Care Services in June 2015; Dawn provided overnight sitting for my three dogs (two of which are special needs, and all

Tips
EYE Care
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) affects more than 23 million Americans and is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in adults. Dry Eye is a condition in which there are insufficient tears, thus not lubricating and nourishing the eye. Healthy tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye, without this it may cause damage to the tear glands and could possibly affect clear vision.
If you are having symptoms such as irritated, gritty, scratchy or burning eyes, a feeling of something in their eyes, excess watering, and blurred vision you may have Dry Eye Syndrome. Tomoka Eye Associates would like to help you improve your symptoms with a comprehensive eye examination. New and advanced testing and treatment options are available for you to help minimize dryness and related discomfort and to maintain your eye health. Early diagnosis is very important, so make an appointment today to visit one of our physicians at Tomoka Eye Associates, your trusted leaders in eye care.
Tomoka Eye, Ormond Beach, FL Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the United States for people over 65 years of age. AMD is a progressive eye condition that damages the macula, the part of the retina that is responsible for our central vision. We use our central vision for our common daily tasks like reading and driving. The cause of AMD is unknown, however some are at greater risk. The greatest risk factor for AMD is age. At the age of 50, you have just a 2% risk, but the risk increase to 30% by age 75. Other risk factors you cannot control: • Family History: The risk of AMD is three times higher if an immediate family member has the condition. • Skin/eye color: People with light colored skin and eyes are more likely to develop AMD. • Gender: Women get AMD more often than men. Central Florida Eye Specialists, DeLand FL
What is a Cataract? Inside your eyes, we have a natural lens. The lens bends (refracts) light rays that come into the eye to help us see. The lens should be clear. But if you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. What Causes Cataracts? Aging is the most common cause
of cataracts. This is due to normal eye changes that happen after around age 40. That is when normal protein proteins in the lens start to break down. This is what causes the lenses to get cloudy. People over the age 60 usually start to have some clouding of their lenses. Other reason you may get cataracts include: • Having parents, brother, sisters, or other family members who have cataracts • having certain medical problem such as diabetes • having had an eye injury, eye surgery, or radiation treatments on your upper body • having spent a lot of time in the sun, especially without sunglasses that protect your eyes from damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. GARDENING BRANCH
Strong Roots
Lizards and Toads and Bugs, Oh My!!
I
t is hard to believe we are already in March. If you have ever had a garden you know that March can offer up some surprises for those of us who enjoy growing things. One thing we can count on is that March will usher in a whole lot of visitors to your garden, some of them not so welcome. So this month I thought I
would share some of our experiences with unwelcome interlopers at our farm and how you can control them without turning you garden into a toxic waste dump. It is important to note that only about 10% of the insects that visit your garden are pests. Another 10% are beneficial such as pollinators and predators that feed on the bad bugs. The remaining 80% generally offer no benefit or harm. To minimize the damage these bad bugs do it is important to have an integrated pest management program (IPMP) on any farm or garden. Don’t let the name intimidate you. On a small garden scale it is very easy to put in place. There are several practices we us on the farm in our IPMP to minimize our losses.
First, always plant a little more than you need. A good rule of thumb is plan for about 10% crop lose when growing organically. You are never going to keep all the bugs out of the garden. You will drive yourself crazy trying. But what you can do is perform regular inspections at least every other day. Bugs can move in and do serious damage to a crop in just a couple days. So it is essential that you learn to identify and treat for pests before it becomes a major infestation. How to identify insects common to our area is more than I can cover in this column. My suggestion is when you find a bug you can’t identify try looking it up online or take it to your local County Extension Office. Second have an arsenal of organic products on hand to help you deal with invaders. When buying a pest control product look for the OMRI or WASA certification label to tell you it has been approved as safe for organic production. Be familiar with them and have more than one product. This allows for you to rotate your sprays and help prevent resistance build up in the insects. Once you begin applying them follow the manufactures instructions and apply them regularly until the infestation is gone. Third, incorporate biological control measures such as beneficial insects and critters into your garden. As you walk around our fields you will find all sorts of frogs, lizards and spiders. In addition we make it a point to add Lady Bugs, Green Lace Wings and Praying Mantids to the fields. We now hold our Lady Bug festival each year. The event features food, activities/games for
MARCH 2016 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
kids and educational booths. It culminates with us releasing thousands of Lady Bugs into the field. This year we will be having it on Saturday, March 12th from 2 to 5 pm. Adults are $10, children 6 to 15 are 5$ and under 6 are free. Fourth learn the life cycle of the pests that frequent your garden. For example, I know that every year at the end of February we will see the Japanese beetle. Its preferred food is turnip greens. We can control them to some extent with repellents and pheromone lure traps. But even with that they do quite a bit of damage. So the simple solution is stop growing turnips. We no longer plant turnips past mid-January so that we harvest out the last of the crop when the bugs arrive. I will confess that even with all these practices in place gardening in Florida can be a challenge, especially in the spring. But I do know that since we have developed our IPMP we have far more control on unwanted visitors to our farm. Here is wishing you much success with your garden this spring and remember today is a good day to have a good day. For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E. Taylor Rd, DeLand, FL 32724 or e-mail any questions to strongroots. agingtree@gmail.com For an extended version of this article visit agingtree.com.
