emorial Day: Remembering the Fallen As many will celebrate Memorial Day with a barbeque or day on the boat, let us all not forget what this day is truly about.
Memorial Day (May 30 this year) is the day set aside to honor all those who have died while serving the United States in the armed forces. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, and on this day the American flag is flown at half-staff until noon, then raised to full staff until sundown. On this day, many will visit cemeteries leaving American flags to honor these fallen heroes. As you read the sentiments below, I hope you’ll join me in remembering the fallen, and pause to reflect on what freedom means to you:
COREY SHENK, EDITOR IN CHIEF
“Memorial Day this year is especially important as we are reminded almost daily of the great sacrifices that the men and women of the Armed Services make to defend our way of life.” - Robin Hayes “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” - John F. Kennedy

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” - Joseph Campbell “It doesn’t take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle.” - H. Norman Schwarzkopf *** This May edition of Aging Tree Illustrated offers another in-depth look at dementia: how it is diagnosed, how to manage a diagnosis, and our 2016 Assisted Living memory care guide. We also are reminded that May is Stroke Awareness month as Cheree Albert, MSN, ARNP, CPNP, outlines those all-important signs and symptoms of a stroke. Also in this issue, get more information on hearing health as we celebrate National Hearing Month; benefit from essential legal advice from Scott Selis, Esq.; and experience the world through the eyes of Alzheimer’s with writer Kim Denoff. Thank you to all who serve, have served, and to those have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Side-by-side with you, we honor the fallen this Memorial Day. Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Part 2 of 3
Diagnosis and Next Steps
R
eceiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is the beginning of a new, likely frightening, journey. Though the diagnosis may have come from a neurologist, psychologist or psychiatrist, it can still be shocking, particularly to patients who were in denial about their deteriorating mental condition. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, skilled physicians can diagnose dementia with 90-percent accuracy. How can medical professionals diagnose it so confidently? What kinds of resources and technology are available to them that assist in these diagnoses? And, once the diagnosis is made, what are a patient’s next steps? In this, the second in a three-article series on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, Aging Tree Illustrated is exploring the methods through which physicians diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, and the steps patients and their loved ones should take once that diagnosis is made.
most progressive dementias are suffered by older adults ages 60 and older. (Contrary to popular belief, an Alzheimer’s diagnosis does not simply stem from a patient’s reported memory loss. In fact, memory loss can be triggered by a number of other physiological issues, such as depression, thyroid malfunctioning or as prescription side effects, for example.)
Symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis
As we wrote in our first article in this series last month, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have many more symptoms than age-related memory loss. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s can show themselves in memory, communication, motor activity, focus, judgement, visual perception, and the ability to plan events or organize ideas. Dementias damage brain cells enough to keep them from working properly. Different brain cells operate various areas of the brain. In Alzheimer’s patients, for example, the hippocampus of the brain is affected by the disease first. The hippocampus is the brain’s memory storage system and learning center. There, plaques (protein) build up between the cells in abnormally shaped clusters when the disease is present, formed from protein pieces called beta-amyloid.
Medical conditions as indicators
There’s no single test to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Rather, medical professionals, notably neurologists, use several criteria to diagnose it and other progressive dementia. These may include examining the patient’s medical history and lab test results and reviewing a patient’s changes in day-to-day functioning. Age is as known risk factor as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control,
Technology to confirm disease
Brain scans. Amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) scans – are being used more and more often by the medical community to track and record brain activity, as well as record the formation of plaques made of beta-amyloid – those hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. Notable neurology journals have published studies that have used PET scans to highlight brain proteins. The scans are so telling they may be able to diagnose the disease before symptoms appear. Eye exams. Dr. Thomas J. Lewis, of RealHealth (Alzheimer’s) Clinics, partners with

By Vickie Pleus optometrists who perform simple yet effective eye exams that can detect the presence of beta-amyloid. The protein can be seen through the eye, and though its presence does not equate to a definitive Alzheimer’s diagnosis, it can serve as a red flag for disease on the horizon, or act as an indicator that additional tests are needed. Further, says Dr. Lewis, studies show a connection between the retina, loss of nervous system cells and Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and even multiple sclerosis. His clinic in Lake Mary offers these retinal evaluations through partnership with several local ophthalmologists. “Nervous tissue loss is a disease process, and almost 1,000 publications show a connection,” he says. Neuropsychological tests. Tests that measure thinking or memory skills, called cognitive tests, can help determine a patient’s mental functioning. These may include measuring how well they think, how quickly they react, or how much they remember, for example. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Division of Cognitive Neurology has published an online test for to detect signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia: the SAGE test. The Self-Administered Gerocognitive Exam (SAGE) is designed to detect early signs of cognitive, memory or thinking impairments. It evaluates the test-taker’s thinking abilities and helps physicians know how well your brain is working. Here are some areas the test evaluates: • Memory loss - Misplacing items and forgetting recently learned information, conversations, names, etc. • Language problems - Trouble finding words • Disorientation to time - Forgetting the day of the week or the date • Impaired sense of direction - Getting lost in a familiar place • Changes in personality or mood • Executive impairment - Difficulties with decision making, using poor judgement or impaired organizational skills cont. pg 9 |8|
After diagnosis: The next steps
Once a patient has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, what’s next? There’s no doubt receiving this news is life-changing – for the patient and those who love him or her. But, although there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s or other progressive dementias, early diagnosis can relieve some symptoms, give patients and families more time to plan for the future, and create the opportunity for the best possible journey. Be a healthcare advocate. Don’t be shy in asking your doctor to explain how he or she came to the conclusion of the diagnosis, how far he believes the disease has progressed, and what you can expect in the future (near and distant). Become your own healthcare advocate, or an advocate for your loved one, by asking questions and searching for answers through reliable online resources such as www.alz.org, and healthcare providers who specialize in the disease. Make a plan for the future. There may be a sense of urgency now to get legal documents such as wills, trusts, medical directives and more into place. Consult with your trusted financial and legal advisors to determine whether your documents re-
main suitable for the new future you’re facing, and adjust them – or create new ones – accordingly. Take steps to make home safer. Those living with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and significant memory loss need special care. Additional attention and adapted living accommodations become essential when individuals no longer can remember to take medication, attend to their own basic living needs, or are prone to wander. When safety is at risk, it’s time to explore options. The decision to find memory care for a loved one can be a difficult one, but once you reach the sound determination that a change is needed, you’ll likely find several options from which to choose. See our article in last month’s issue of Aging Tree Illustrated (“Memory Care Options”) for more details. Care for your emotional needs. Last but not least, safeguard your spirit as much as possible during this difficult time. The range of intense emotions that come from any troubling, serious diagnosis are normal. The Alzheimer’s Association identifies a wide range of emotions that are typically experienced by patients and loved ones af-
ter a dementia diagnosis: anger, denial, depression, resentment, fear, isolation or an intense sense of loss. No matter the emotion, the unsettling feelings that follow a diagnosis are very real. Seek the comfort you need – through stress management, spiritual guidance, by surrounding yourself with loved ones, or joining an understanding community/ support group – to help guide you through what will be a challenging time. And, eat healthy foods that encourage healthy brain and body functioning, and exercise as possible. Above all, don’t fear an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis. Know the factors involved in such a determination, and how to manage the disease through support and resources. The more you understand, the more comfortable and peaceful the journey will be. Knowledge is Power Fighting the Fear of Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and Dementia MENTAL HEALTH BRANCH
R
eceiving a negative health diagnosis of any kind can cause fear and anxiety in anyone. Yet the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and Dementia seems to carry with it an extra dose of fear. Our society highly prizes being “with it”, and “having it together.” A diagnosis of dementia of any kind, brings with it anxiety of “loss of control.” The Marist Institute for Public Opinion (MIPO) surveyed more than 1,200 Americans in 2013 to gain perspective on the most pressing concerns associated with Alzheimer’s, including diagnosis and the difficulties of caring for a loved one with the disease. The survey showed that Americans fear developing Alzheimer’s disease more than any other major life-threatening disease, including cancer, stroke, heart disease and diabetes. A Harris Poll conducted in 2015 found that the worries cross all generations: more than 75 percent of millennials, Generation Xers and baby boomers worry about what will happen to their memory as they age. The MIPO survey also showed that, if diagnosed with the disease, Americans most fear the inability to care for oneself, and burdening others (68 percent); followed by losing memory of life and loved ones (32 percent). When asked if it would be harder to receive an Alzheimer’s diagnosis or care for someone with the disease, Americans are equally split down the midd l e , 50/50. And the survey also conclude d that 6 1 percent o f
Americans feel unprepared to care for a loved one diagnosed with the disease. The next finding is the one that I find to be the most potent, in how folks respond to Alzheimer’s: Nearly two-thirds of Americans (63 percent) have had a personal experience with someone with Alzheimer’s and/or a serious memory loss problem. This means that these Americans have seen first-hand the devastating
effects of what this disease can do. Watching someone you care about, losing capacity and ability to function in their usual competent way, is overwhelming indeed. There are several other articles in Aging Tree Illustrated in recent months, and in this month’s edition, that will help you navigate the medical and pharmaceutical side of managing Alzheimer’s disease. In this article we will attempt to address how to deal with the anxiety and fear of diagnosis, whether for you, or for a loved one. One of the biggest fears known to man, is the fear of the unknown. The first coping mechanism I would like to suggest comes from the old adage, “Knowledge is power”. This is true in regards to Alzheimer’s as well. Educate yourself and your loved ones about this disease. There is more information now on this subject than there ever before. Books, magazines, websites, medical specialists and more, all have the ability to increase your knowledge of Alzheimer’s and give you power over “fear of the unknown”. The second way I would recommend in coping with fear of dementia is, “Don’t be a hero”. One of the most enduring traits of Baby Boomers is that they are fiercely independent. And this works wonderfully in many spheres, yet when facing the fear of Alzheimer’s it is much better to have a mob mentality. “Rally-round the banner”, “grab your torches and pitch forks”, “march on the capitol”, “there is strength in numbers”. This “monster” is too big to face on our own. Get your family involved, get your friends involved, join a support group, start a support group, join a “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” event, get involved. The third strategy against fear of Alzheimer’s is, “Don’t wait”. Waiting causes more anxiety than active fighting. This has been proven over and over again in numerous battles and wars throughout history. There is a movement in this country to face this Alzheimer’s and Dementia battle head on. Be proactive. Be preventive. Be an advocate. Do not wait for a diagnosis to happen to you before you act. Get medical professional’s opinion. Research preventive measures. Advocate for those who cannot do so for themselves. You will be glad you did, and you will avoid all that anxiety that can come with sitting and waiting for the battle to come to you. My next fear defending device, and maybe the most important one, is to know what is within your control, and what is outside the realm of your control. Not a week goes by, that I do not remind my clients of this concept. So much time and energy is wasted on trying to change things that are outside our sphere of influence. The serenity prayer, authored by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971), was first used in a sermon at his church in Massachusetts in 1934, and later appeared in a magazine column in 1951. It

By Loren Fish, LCSW has since been popularized by twelve step programs. The best-known form is: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference. This simple prayer has helped thousands be able to stop wasting time and energy on the impossible and put that newly freed up time and energy to good, productive use. To wrap up, the four fear fighting tools are: Knowledge is Power; Strength in Numbers; Don’t Wait; and Accept the things you Cannot Change. I leave you with a word of caution. Your best way to fight may not be the same as others. Everyone has advice for you, and this can be helpful at times, especially coming from those who have “been there, done that”. Yet it is import that you not try to “fight the fear” in someone else’s armor. In the Bible story of the young shepherd David, he was offered the opportunity to wear the armor of then king Saul, to go and fight the Philistine giant, Goliath. 1 Samuel 17:38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 And David attached his sword over his armor. Then he tried to go, but could not, for he was not used to it. And David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I am not used to them. And David took them off. (Also, Saul voiced his concern about David’s lack of fighting experience,) and 37 David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones out of the brook and put them in his shepherd’s bag, and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near the Philistine. 43 And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you should come to me with sticks?” 45 Then said David to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts,... 47 ....and the Lord saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” And David killed Goliath with a well-placed stone, shot from his sling; and the army of the giant ran away. David realized that the king’s fighting style did not suit him. So he took off Saul’s armor and proceeded to defeat the giant in the way that he knew how and had success with in the past. Please take time to remember how you have been successful in the past against, especially in battling fear. This will give you the ammunition you need to fight the fear of diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and dementia, for you and your loved ones.

LIVING WELL BRANCH
May is American Stroke Month
Think F.A.S.T. Act Fast!
S
everal weeks ago I learned that a friend, not yet 60 years of age, had fallen while walking and sustained a severe head injury. To my surprise a stroke was suspected and he is still recovering in an assisted living facility. This experience falls into the “a little too close to home” category for many of his friends. As a nurse I have cared for countless patients, even children who have suffered a stroke. My own grandmother had several that I can recall. In the early years I believed the myth that stroke was just something that was going to happen at some point. Perhaps you might feel this way. What is true is that in the vast majority of cases lives are forever changed. Did you know that every 40 seconds someone has a stroke according to the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA)? The statistics are not favorable toward women as women have more strokes than men. Stroke causes more deaths in women compared to men. We are also learning more about the relationship between atrial fibrillation and the increased risk for stroke. Atrial fibrillation affects an estimated 2.7 million Americans. Approximately 15%20% of all strokes are linked to this condition. Strokes happen when a blood vessel to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. Blood flow is changed and due to the lack of oxygen the brain cells die. Improved outcomes are often noted when treatment is provided within 3 - 4 ½ hours so knowing the warning signs and symptoms of stroke is key. If you suspect that you or someone else is having a stroke think F. A. S. T. F – Face drooping A – Arm weakness S – Speech difficulty T – Time to call 911 Additional signs of stroke include sudden trouble seeing, dizziness, confusion, severe headache, or weakness on one side of the body. This last group of signs are sometimes overlooked or explained away as not serious due to stress, fatigue, or extra activity (cleaning, yardwork, etc.) outside of the routine. These also can serve as the body’s early warning system. Call your local emergency services number, 9-1-1, immediately. Stroke patients who arrive at the hospital by ambulance have a greater
chance of living, preserving independence and having a full recovery according to the AHA/ASA. The most important and encouraging fact I want to share is that at least 80% of all strokes can be prevented! Maintaining a healthy body so that you can have a sharp mind and healthy brain will lower your risk for this leading cause of death and #1 preventable cause of disability. An added benefit is that the strategies for lowering your risk for stroke will apply to many other conditions as well. To reduce YOUR risk, follow Life’s Simple 7 ™: Manage your blood pressure. Remember you may have an increased blood pressure and no symptoms. Learn your typical blood pressure so that you will be able to recognize if it is increasing. This is especially true for those of us who have a routinely low normal reading. A blood pressure within the upper ranges of normal would be abnormally high for me. Eat better by adding more fruits and vegetables and decreasing salt intake to the recommended limit of 1500mg. Get physically active with 30 minutes of activity most days of the week. This

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP can be done in smaller increments throughout the day. Lose excess weight. Easier said than done I know, but pay particular attention to the waist size aiming for less than 35 inches for women and less than 40 inches for men. Lower your cholesterol to within the normal range. Reduce your blood sugar and maintain within a healthy range throughout the day. If you smoke, get help to stop. I would add to this list adequate daily fluid intake, restorative sleep and being socially connected. Sound overwhelming? Start with one simple change. Small consistent decisions will be a catalyst for feeling better and the desire to do more. The fact that 80 – 90% of stroke and other potentially life changing conditions are preventable inspires me daily as a Certified Health and Wellness Coach. I love being in the business of health care for whatever that looks like in my client’s lives. Many of my clients have health challenges and others are in prevention mode to minimize their risk. Connecting the dots between the health they envision and tools to make that vision a reality is the greatest honor. Many of us have been touched personally or with a family or friend’s experiences in this area. Perhaps you know someone who seems to be heading in the direction that is known to have undesirable consequences. It often takes that experience that “is closer to home” to put the necessary information on our radar in a way that will get our attention. Until then, the need to adjust a few things in our lifestyle and nutrition is “that thing we will do someday”. Make your “someday” this day and positively impact the trajectory of your health and vitality. Cheree M. Albert MSN, CRNP, CPNP is the owner of Integrity Health Source LLC. Votran has developed a new tool for riders that can help them access real-time arrival and departure information from their bus stops. With VO-TO-GO, riders can text a short message and get back real-time information. You don’t need a smart phone; any mobile phone with text messaging can be used. When you arrive at your bus stop, look for the blue-and-white VO-TO-GO placard attached to the bus stop post. You’ll find all the information you need to access this tool. We suggest that you set up VO-TO-GO as a contact in your phone’s contact list for easy access. The phone number is easy. It’s 321-123. Open the contact as if you were going to send a text message to a friend. You’ll see a Stop ID# on the VO-TO-GO placard. Type in the number in the message section of your text. Make sure you include the VO part of the number. For example, texting the Stop ID# VO2582 will let the rider know the next three times the Route 23 Inbound bus will be at the Kohl’s Orange City stop. Sometimes there is more than one route that services a stop. In that case, when the rider sends the text message of VO2919 at Market Place Shopping Center, the reply from VO-TO-GO will be the next three times the Route 20, 21, 22, 23 will be at that location. The Stop ID#s found on the VO-TO-GO placards are the actual identification numbers used by Votran for database and inventory purposes. These numbers can be used to find routes and locations on Votran’s MyStop Live Bus Tracker as well. If you would rather call Votran Customer Service to get needed information about a route or directions on how to get to a destination, you can use the same ID# when you call. This will help the customer service team provide you with quick information. As part of Votran’s expanded rider tools, the VO-TO-GO system helps get more information into the palm of your hand. When you’re standing at a bus stop and you need to know, text VO-TO-GO. It’s that easy.

o you think about your ability to hear and speak as often as you think of the functioning of your heart, lungs, or other essential parts of your body? May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, and the experts at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association are reminding us about caring for our ears, tending to our hearing, helping us under-
stand how hearing and speech are intricately connected, and honoring the professionals who treat our hearing loss and communication disorders. Many ailments can affect speech, hearing and communication. Stroke-related aphasia and multiple sclerosis, for example, can affect the ability to speak and understand speech. Alzheimer’s and other progressive
May is Better Hearing and Speech Month dementias can negatively affect speech and understanding, too, as parts of the brain responsible for such functions become diseased. But of all these, the most common communication disorder in seniors is hearing loss. Hearing loss can be gradual (age-related or excessive exposure to noise over time) or sudden (like a single, extremely loud noise). If you’re 65 or older, research indicates there’s a one in three chance you’re experiencing hearing loss. If you’re over 75, there’s a 50-50 chance you have a hard time hearing. If you have difficulty hearing doorbells, alarms, or conversations between friends, your hearing isn’t as affective as it once was. On one hand, hearing loss can be a nuisance if you have to ask your friend to repeat himself. But, on the other, it can be life-threatening if you can’t hear a fire alarm! The good news is hearing loss can be treated with various methods. In fact, several treatments on the market aid in restoring normal hearing. Hearing aids are electronic devices worn in or behind the ear; cochle-
By Vickie Pleus ar implants are surgically implanted in the inner ear; assistive listening devices include such household items as amplifying phones; and lip-reading or speech-reading techniques can help the hearing-impaired follow conversations more effectively. If you suspect (or know) you’re experiencing hearing loss, help is out there! Many hearing aid centers offer hearing tests (often free), ear cleaning and hearing aid repair and sales. Products range from the simple and effective to the expensive and techy. Aging Tree is connected to several hearing aid centers in our communities, and can help families find the most appropriate sales and service of hearing aids. Call Aging Tree’s senior care advisors at 1-866-3208803 for pricing, reviews and to narrow your search. In the meantime, care for your ears! They’re two of your most valuable connections to the world around you.

INSIDE ADVISOR
Legal Matters to Consider with Memory Loss: Do you remember the old Fram Automobile Auto Filter commercial? The mechanic in the ad said, “Pay me now or pay me later.” His point was clear: The customer could spend a little now for an oil filter, or a lot later for major engine repairs. The same could be said for “incapacity documents.” You can either pay the attorney a few hundred now, or pay the attorney a few thousand later. Incapacity documents, as I call them, are some of the least expensive services lawyers offer. They are composed of a Durable Power of Attorney for Financial Matters, Healthcare Power of Attorney, Living Will, and HIPPA Release. The first two documents help ensure decision-making is minimally affected by mental incapacity. Mental incapacity can present itself naturally – as it does with dementia, for example – or it can be caused by medications. Either way, if you’re mentally incapacitated, unanticipated problems can arise that will affect your family for days, weeks, months or sometimes,
Legal years. In advance of your need for them, you can get these incapacity documents prepared for a few hundred dollars. Of course, there’s no law that requires that you have these documents prepared, so many people don’t have them. Some reports say that more than 70 percent of people age 55 and over do not have incapacity documents at the ready. So, what’s the big deal? I’m glad you asked. Consider this scenario: You’re in a car accident and you’re seriously injured. Despite receiving medication to ease your discomfort, you’re still in pain. In the meantime, your real estate agent calls to say you finally received an offer on the house you’ve had for sale. You really don’t want to make important decisions at a time like this, so you ask one of your adult children for help. Your child speaks with the realtor and a deal is reached. You don’t recognize that it’s not a very good deal, because you’re not in your right mind (and by the way, in the meantime, you had a much-needed surgery and are on strong pain medications). So, you tell your child to go forward with the real-estate transaction. When your child tries to enter the contract, the realtor asks for the power of attorney. But, you never created one, and there is nothing in writing that says that your child has the authority to sell the home. If the realtor is ethical, and many are, s/he will be uncomfortable having you sign the document
By Scott A. Selis, Esq. when you’re under the influence of so many pain meds. So, what’s the solution at this point? You’ll have to seek a guardianship, the cost of which might be as much as $5,000; and that’s if no one fights over it. And, it’ll take four to six months. *** This is just one of many examples of the types of burdens people must carry for their loved ones when the loved one doesn’t want to pay a lawyer a few hundred dollars to prepare documents that can save thousands of dollars in the future. Please don’t make this mistake. Have your incapacity documents professionally prepared right away. That way you can pay now, and not pay much more later.

Alzheimer’s disease...Through the eyes of an adult child “Intelligent, meticulous and adventurous”. These are the words a dear friend uses to describe her father prior to his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. When he became isolated within himself because he could no longer articulate his feelings, her beautiful memories gave way to new descriptions of her father: frustrated, aggressive, irritable, and lonely. The family questioned why his personality was changing so drastically? He would become agitated when she rescued him from dangerous situations or made him shower because he would forget to. She learned he needed to be reminded to eat and take medications properly. It became necessary to monitor her parent’s fi-
Health Wise nances because he would take money out of the bank and didn’t remember doing it. Sadly, it got to the point that her father couldn’t always remember his daughter’s name. “Mom began to speak for him”. My amazingly strong friend took in her mom to live with her. Together, they would visit her dad often at a secure home for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. Her advice to other adult children is that “when it all adds up and you realize there’s an issue, be careful to show respect in your manner and position of being helpful. Accept the role of parent to your parent. This is an extremely difficult role reversal for both the parent and child.” The power of love is vital to living with any disease, in every aspect of aging. Married over 70 years, he was blessed to have the love and support of his beautiful wife. “Mom’s name was the only one he never forgot”. He recently passed away after over 13 years

Strong Roots Gardening in Florida’s Unique Climate GARDENING BRANCH
Y
ou don’t have to live in Florida long to realize that our climate is uniquely different from most of the United States. Just as spring is beginning to show up in most parts of the country it is beginning to give way to summer here. The daytime temperatures climb into the 90’s by May and evening temperatures are often in the low 70’s. Every year I am approached by recent arrivals from up north wanting to know where they can get tomato plants or lettuce or some other typical summer crop. I have the unfortunate task of telling them it is too late to plant these succulent morsels. Between the heat, humidity, bugs and plant diseases most of these plants won’t survive long enough to reach harvest. Does this mean you should fold up the garden and wait for fall? Not necessarily. There are some vegetables that thrive in our summer climate. While they may not be some of your favorites with a little practice they can still provide you with some tasty summer dishes. Beginning in June we close up most of the farm to get it ready for the fall. Even then I still have a small summer garden. In it you will find Okra, eggplant, peppers and Asian long beans growing. Some summers we plant lima beans or black eyed peas which love hot summer days and warm nights. This year we are
also experimenting with some squash and hot house cucumbers in our converted seed house. Another favorite for the summer are sweet potatoes which will grow and thrive
in the heat to produce a wonderful early fall crop. There are several practices that you can incorporate to help guarantee a successful summer garden. One helpful practice is to provide some shade for the more sensitive plants like peppers or cucumbers. Shade cloth that reduces the sunlight by
by John Joslin no more than 30% will help these plants grow longer into the summer and prevent sun scald of the vegetables. Another is to increase the frequency of watering to insure your plants are well hydrated. We water three times a day but if you are hand watering, twice a day should be sufficient. It is best to water in the morning and late afternoon after 5pm. Of course you need to decrease this if we are experiencing summer rains. Over-watering can produce the same wilted appearance as under watering. If you are not sure which it is stick your finger several inches down into the soil around mid-day to feel for moisture. If the soil is still moist there is sufficient water for the plants. Make sure to inspect your plants daily for insects and disease as both can rapidly get out of control in the summer. It is helpful to perform a preventative spraying with an organic fungicide a day or so before any expected rains to help keep fungal diseases under control. You should reapply it at least weekly as needed unless directions state otherwise. With a little practice you will be growing a bounty of delectable summer vegetables and enjoying them at your supper table. Until next month remember to make today a good day to have a good day. For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E. Taylor Rd, DeLand, FL 32724 or e-mail any questions to strongroots. agingtree@gmail.com For an extended version of this article visit agingtree.com.

Alzheimer’s Helpful Tips to Simplify Mealtime QUICK TIPS
Mealtime for most people is an easy and enjoyable time, but for a person with dementia it can be a confusing and unpleasant time and pose a huge challenge for the caregiver. There are some helpful things to consider when preparing meals for someone with cognitive issues. • One suggestion is to make mealtime a very enjoyable time with simple and nutritious foods. • The table should be set with just 1 plate or bowl and with just the silverware needed for the meal. Too many pieces of silverware, choices, and distractions can be a problem and seem overwhelming to one with Alzheimer’s. • Serving one food at a time can also be helpful. • Always consider temperature of the food, avoid spicy or rich foods, and keep a record of the favorite foods for future reference. • Most people don’t like to eat alone, so it is a nice idea to eat together with them and make them feel more comfortable. • Never rush the meal, patience is the key to having a nice meal, and never make a big deal if things get messy. • Clean up later and don’t let them see you cleaning the mess. • Encourage independence and let them feed themselves. • Make sure the food is easy to chew and always be cautious of choking. Finger foods like chicken nuggets (breaded in almond four and ground flax meal and friend in coconut oil) and sweet potato fries are easy to eat and nutritious. Steamed vegetables like zucchini sticks and carrot slices are also good choices. There are all kinds of nutrition ideas available on line. Mealtime is a very important time and making it fun for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be rewarding to both parties. Relax and enjoy quality time together. Dr. Margo King Ph.D., D.N. Place all fruit except banana into a large serving bowl. Gently fold in pie filling. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Right before serving, add banana slices.
VARIATIONS:
-This salad is fabulous with whatever fruit you have on hand -Adding banana last prevents it from becoming too soft and discolored -Fresh mandarin oranges can be substituted for canned -Add 1/2 cup chopped walnuts -I prefer Comstock peach pie filling in this recipe
