(Speaking of marathoners, as I write this, the 120th Boston Marathon is underway in Beantown. Katherine Beiers is the oldest finisher of the 26.2-mile race. She’s 83 years young. She’s run it 13 times and doesn’t have any plans to stop running it anytime soon.) Has there been a time in your life when exercise wasn’t a priority for you? I’m sure we all go through phases with it. Have you watched the scale go up and down? Have you prioritized your health some years, and other years put on the back burner? That’s real life for many of us, isn’t it? In this issue of Aging Tree Illustrated, we’re talking about National Senior Health and Fitness Day, which is on May 31. It’s a nationally recognized event that has the goal of helping to keep older Americans healthy and fit. Check out this issue for healthy recipes, information on how technology and computers can assist in our good-health journeys, and much more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has no shortage of reasons we should exercise, no matter how many years we’ve been around. Exercise can help control your weight, reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes, reduce your risk of some cancers, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mental health and mood, improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent falls; and increase your chances of living longer. There are so many ways to stay fit. Are you a rock-hunter? It didn’t intend to be so, but this new trend in our communities of hiding painted rocks and searching for them (search “Volusia County Rocks” or “DeLand Rocks” on the internet to learn more), has really gotten families out and about. People post on social media how they’re walking around parks and neighborhoods simply to hide and hunt! Check it out and join the fun. Your grandchildren will love it. Cheers to your good health, my friends!
Make your days great…you’re in charge of them..

Living Well Branch Living an Active Life is the Gift that Keeps on Giving FEATURE ARTICLE
I
n the spirit of National Senior Health and Fitness Day, I am celebrating each one of you on your journey to live well and age gracefully. If you have been reading the Living Well Branch over these past years, you know that this opportunity
for cardiovascular disease in 2017 published by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Foundation. It is reported that cardiovascular disease accounts for 1 of every 3 deaths in the United States, more than all forms of cancer and Chronic Low-
is available to us all regardless of our age, stage or condition. I am grateful for the people in my life who affirm this daily even in light of health challenges and circumstances. My dad, at the age of 91, is one such individual that inspires me. This attitude of gratitude and not letting our circumstances define us places a different perspective on so many things. A recent example is the statistics
er Respiratory Disease combined, for an average of 1 death every 40 seconds. The great news and the real “take away” from this is that we have the opportunity to modify the risk of cardiovascular disease for ourselves, our families and community. (The AHA tracks seven key health factors and behaviors that are known to increase your risk for heart disease and stroke called “Life’s

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP Simple 7”). Instead of focusing on “what not to do” let’s talk about and celebrate what to do that will make the difference! This mindset change is powerful. Attention to these areas will positively impact not only cardiovascular disease and stroke but additional key opportunities to age gracefully. Use this checklist and identify one simple change that you will start today. M anag e B lood P res s u re – High blood pressure affects 1 in 3 adults over 20 and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. It is called the “silent killer” and nearly half of people with high blood pressure may not even be aware they have it or do not have it under control. When your blood pressure stays in a healthy range you reduce strain on your heart, arteries and kidneys which keeps you healthier longer. Know your numbers. Avoid processed foods that are a large source of sodium in the diet. Aim for the current daily recommendation (for healthy individuals) for sodium intake of 1500 mg – 2300 mg (1 teaspoon). Use a variety of spices and no-salt spice blends to flavor your food. The use of turmeric and black pepper, for example, provides health promoting antioxidants and flavor to food. cont. pg 10 |8|

Control Ch oles terol – High cholesterol contributes to plaque, which can clog arteries (atherosclerosis) and lead to heart disease and stroke. Atherosclerosis can begin in childhood, as early as ages 10-12 and has been reported in children even younger. Controlling cholesterol gives vessels the best chance to remain free of blockage. Remember high cholesterol does not produce symptoms until significant damage is done. R ed u c e B lood S u g ar – An estimated 23.4 million people have diabetes and an even greater number, nearly 81.6 million people, have prediabetes and are not aware they have it. Our bodies need an adequate amount of glucose (blood sugar) to fuel our body. Over time though, high levels of blood sugar can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Follow your HbA1c levels with your health care provider. G et Ac tiv e – Daily physical
activity, a minimum of 30 minutes most days of the week, is important for your physical and mental health. If that amount each day seems daunting then start with 5-10 minutes and increase a few minutes every day/ week. Researchers have found that regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart and your sweat glands pumping, appears to boost the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning. This finding comes at a critical time as researchers say one new case of dementia is detected every four seconds globally. They estimate that by the year 2050, more than 115 million people will have dementia worldwide. Resistance training, balance and muscle toning exercises are extremely important as well and will help to minimize fall risk, though did not have the same results related to memory and cognition. Exer-
cise helps memory and thinking through both direct and indirect means. The benefits of exercise come directly from its ability to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of growth factors—chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells, the growth of new blood vessels in the brain, and even the abundance and survival of new brain cells. Indirectly, exercise improves mood and sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety. Challenges in these areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment. The logistics of exercise/movement may present needs for adaptation due to mobility issues. For example, if there is lower extremity challenge the upper extremities can be used to increase heart rate. The connection to minimizing the risk for cerebral degeneration is a powerful motivator. class or working out with a friend who will hold you accountable; tracking your progress, which encourages you to reach a goal and if possible hiring a personal trainer. A dear friend of mine gifted her mom who was suffering with severe rheumatoid arthritis with personal training. This was life changing for her mom who went on to participate in more intense walking, even competing in the trials for Senior Olympics for her age group. Living an active life is the gift that keeps on giving. For many of us it's a real challenge to accomplish on a regular basis. Did you know that if you do not act within 5 seconds from the moment you have an intention to do something your brain will kill the idea? This is the “5 Second Rule”, rooted in neurocognitive science. How do you apply this rule to exercise or any other simple change you want to make? When you have the intention to exercise for example, simply say (aloud whenever possible) 5-4-3-2-1-GO! Try it on something you are wanting/needing to do and have been delaying. It is a simple but powerful tool. Eat Better – The link between whole food nutrition and lowering your risk of disease is very real. The research is compelling for a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to minimize your risk of illness and disease. Minimizing the intake of trans fats, preservatives and chemical flavor enhancers often found in processed foods will decrease the inflammation these compounds add to our bodies. There is a variety of creative and effective ways for even the most “discerning diners” of all ages to help integrate more whole food into the daily diet.

INSIDE ADVISOR Legal - Elder Law Month An Elder Law Attorney may b e Mo re th an Y ou R ealize? I t’ s more th an P reparing W ills and Powers of Attorney
By Presidential proclamation, Americans celebrate those over 65 years old during May. The National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) marks the occasion with Elder Law Month. Are all lawyers that call themselves “elder law” attorneys really “elder law” attorneys? I suppose so. Most lawyers that call themselves elder law attorneys help the elderly by preparing general estate planning documents. So, if a lawyer serves the elderly, it makes sense to call them elder law attorneys.
Preparing basic planning documents is a small part of NAELA’s description of services provided by an “elder law” attorney. Per NAELA and other Elder Law professional organizations, an Elder Law Attorney helps those facing health problems as they age by: • Planning for incapacity with a focus on making long-term care needs like companion care, assisted living, and nursing home care more affordable; • Helping their clients locate the right care and coordinate Government resources to finance the cost of care; and most importantly • Advocating on behalf of clients to ensure that their quality of life and care is as good as possible at the lowest possible cost, regardless of their care needs, by taking legal steps to protect them from abuse and exploitation. Check out NAELA’s “Consumer
By Sco A. Selis, Es . Resources” tab at NAELA.org for more information. You can find Florida specific resources at the website for the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys (AFELA – afela.org). Because of the confusion over who is an elder law attorney, many of us that focus on helping make care costs more affordable have begun calling ourselves “Elder Care Lawyers.” That’s what we do. We help make senior care more affordable and that enhances the aging person’s quality of life. Sco Selis is a lawyer at hiumento Selis Dwyer in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm oast. Sco ’s a member of the Task Force for the Elderly and is Administrative ommi ee hair for the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section. e recently received the Elder Law A orney of the ear Award.

INSIDE ADVISOR Who Is Most Likely to D etec t Y ou r Mel anoma?
If you are a diligent, compliant patient and do not have a history of skin cancer, you should visit your dermatologist once a year for a skin cancer screening. The Melanoma Research Foundation reports that most melanomas are found by patients or their loved ones. Non-melanoma skin cancers are mostly located in the areas that aren’t exposed to the sun. Melanoma skin cancers are almost always due to sun exposure, which is why sunblock is
an essential item for anyone who enjoys spending extended amounts of time outside. Whether you are a sun worshipper like me, or a person that prefers the shade, we are all susceptible to skin cancer. It is the most common type of cancer in the United States, affecting more than 1 million people each year reports the American Academy of Dermatology. Nearly half of Americans who live to age 65 will have some form of skin cancer at some point in their lives according to the National Cancer Institute. While it’s not as deadly as other cancers, skin cancer kills almost 12,000 people each year and there are more than 70,000 new cases annually of the most deadly melanoma skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
By im eno Living in the subtropics of Florida, the sun is strong and exposes us to intense, dangerous rays. According to redorbit.com, “rays arrive at a steep angle, bringing a high degree of ultraviolet radiation.” This is a reason why Florida ranks 5th nationally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Therefore, the best way to avoid skin cancer is to regularly perform self-checks, wear sunblock whenever you’re in the sun and go to your dermatologist once a year for a thorough once-over.

Diabetic Retinopathy If you are one of the 29 million people in the United States with diabetes, you are at risk for diabetic eye disease. It is easy to ignore regular eye exams until you have a problem, but by getting a yearly dilated eye exam, you can help prevent vision loss. Forty-five percent of patients with diabetes develop diabetic eye disease. It occurs in people who have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who have long-term uncontrolled blood sugar levels. The longer you have diabetes, the higher your chances of developing retinopathy become. Nearly everyone who has had diabetes for over 30 years will show some signs of retinopathy. It is also important for pregnant women with diabetes to get checked at
the beginning and throughout their pregnancy. It’s uncommon to have symptoms during the early stages of this condition. The symptoms don’t often appear until major damage occurs in the eye. You can prevent unseen damage by keeping your blood sugars under control and getting regular eye exams. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by changes in the blood vessels in the back of your eye. As the disease progresses, blood vessels can become blocked and prevent areas of the retina from receiving blood and nutrients. These damaged vessels can also leak fluid into the macula, which is responsible for your central vision. Over time this can lead to decreased

Pelvic Dysfunction and Pelvic Floor Therapy Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a wide range of problems that occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are weak, tight, overly sensitive or not sensitive. The tissues surrounding the pelvic organs may have increased or decreased sensitivity and/or irritation resulting in pelvic pain, urgency/frequency of urination, and/or pain in the pelvic region Many times, the underlying cause of pelvic pain is difficult to determine. The conditions may be due to infections (usually undiagnosed), pregnancy or childbirth, poor posture from chronic low back, accidents or as a result of surgery.
The pelvic floor is made up of muscles and other tissues that form a sling from the pubic bone to the tailbone. They assist in supporting the abdominal and pelvic organs, and help to control bladder, bowel and sexual activity. Men, women and children suffer from pelvic dysfunction leading to leakage of urine, feces, chronic pelvic pain, pain with intercourse and constipation. Statistics have shown that approximately 25 million Americans suffer from urinary leakage of some sort. Pelvic Floor Therapy at A Woman’s Wellness and Weight Loss Center includes non-surgical

Skin Cancer As we approach summer the thought of the beach and outdoor activities come to mind. Hopefully you have worn sun screen your entire life, but not likely for many of us. Most of our youth's focused more on having as dark a tan as possible or just not thinking about the sun exposure until someone pointed out that you were getting red. Make sure each year you perform a full skin exam. You will have to have your significant other or doctor look over your back for you to get it all. The face, arms, and upper back are the most common areas but look everywhere. For Melanoma you are looking for the AB CD E : Asymmetry of the lesion, B order
irregularity, Color variegation, D iameter >6mm, E volution of the lesion over time. If you find a lesion of question go to your doctor or see a dermatologist to get it evaluated and likely biopsied. Most skin cancers can be removed easily if caught early and some can have topical chemicals applied to stop them. Apathy is the death sentence. Melanoma can metastasize early and widely. It is difficult to find once it has spread. It is also very difficult, if not impossible to cure once it has metastasized. n this month’s article I would like to address just how you can use today’s technology to help maintain and improve your health. There are so many ‘gadgets’ on the market today that do just that, but I want to focus on 3 that stand out above the rest and you probably have two of them already. They are: 1. Your PC (Laptop or Desktop) 2. Your Smart Phone 3. Fitbit
it’s ready for your command. So let’s say I need to be notified of an upcoming doctor’s appointment, all I would do is say, “Hey Cortana”, then you say, ” Set an appointment to see my doctor next month on the 23rd at 11:00 in the morning” – and that’s it! You will receive a notification the day before that will appear in the lower right hand corner of you PC screen reminding you. Plus, you can see a list of your reminders you have already set at any time.

Everyone would love to have someone remind them to do things like taking your medications or (remind you) of your next doctor’s appointments. In Windows 10 there is Cortana Apple devices have Siri. These can be thought of as your own ‘Personal Digital Assistant’ – once set up, you can speak to them and it will keep track of important information. For example, in Windows 10 you can say, “Hey Cortana”, then at the bottom left of the screen you will see a box pop up and

You can even have your phone and computer work together so you do not have to duplicate your efforts. There is an even an ‘app’ that will help you lose weight and count your calories for you! It’s called ‘MyFitnessPal’. They are very easy to download and use. There are apps that will measure how many steps you take during the day, one for your heart rate and another for blood pressure measurements. Most of these

Aging Tree Travel Adventures Travel Smart: Why Go Guided? TRAVEL BRANCH
W
hat is your WHY? The “Why” I am asking about is your “travel why” -why do you want to travel to your selected destination? A couple years ago I wanted to go to California. I had only ever been to Los Angeles for a fashion show and I had a strong desire to travel to Northern California, San Francisco and Napa Valley region, as I am a self-proclaimed foodie and wino. So a trip to Napa was definitely on my list. My WHY for this trip was simply because I love to travel and taste during an adventure while exploring a destination. I began planning my departure around my husband’s airline miles, hotel points, and car rental. But I quickly realized the price of parking per night, and day tours of sightseeing were adding up. You see I am not one who likes to simply visit a destination. I like the full immersion into a destination of sight, sound, taste, and knowledge. T og eth er w e d ec id ed th e mu s t d o’ s w ere: • San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, taking a cable car ride, Union Square, seeing the seals at Pier 39, Alcatraz, Sausalito, and the Muir Woods. • Napa Valley & Sonoma Valley- Eat and drink as much amazing food and wine as we could try (George actually doesn’t drink, he was the designated driver), Napa Valley Wine Train, Hot Air Balloon Ride over Napa.
On a whim, I looked at a Trafalgar Tour called Northern California. The trip was only two days longer than we were planning to go on our own, but they included Yosemite National Park- SCORE! National parks have a special place in both of our hearts- they are simply spectacular to visit. The tour also went to Lake Tahoe, drove Big Sur, visited Roaring Camp, stopped in Carmel, and ended in Monterey. I began looking at the destination packed itinerary and realized if George and I even tried to drive to all of these places on our own in 8 days we wouldn’t be “experiencing” much of anything because it would feel rushed. So the idea of going on a tour quickly became interesting to us. George is an engineer, so its no surprise to me that he actually made up a spreadsheet for every single expense we would incur going on our own vs. on this tour. We decided prior to departure that the trip was about $300 more than going at it on our own. But we got VALUE of a tour guide, bus driver, and destination experts. There was no way of calculating the cost to that value added. But it was worth well more than $300 to us. So George and I went on this tour with 6 others from our area. And do you want to know something? I think we saved well over $300 by going on a guided tour for things I could never have accounted for because they were thrown in for the experience. Along the way we were treated to things like a whole bag of Ghirardelli chocolates in San Francisco since that was where the

For the foodie’s we both are, all of these little “treats” added up quickly in value. I must say, the absolute best part of the trip was literally the whole trip! From the moment we were picked up by the tour company at the airport George and I began realizing we wouldn’t love driving in that traffic, the hotels we stayed in were spectacular- while in Yosemite we were staying inside of the park, not 10 miles away and outside the gates like most others would need to. We were at the Bridal Veil Falls lodge right inside the park and we saw deer right outside our patio. The "Be My Guest" dinner we had was at a winery that even my non-drinking husband loved and he tried the wine. They brought in local chefs who crafted a superb meal that was all grown and sourced from ingredients raised within 10 miles of the winery- now THAT is farm-to-table. While there, we took a tour of the vines, learned about the history and production of the grapes, hybrid and cross blending of growing vines, as well as using bats to keep rodents and bugs away. We enjoyed barrel tastings, multiple wine tastings, and bottomless samples as we soaked in the views of the sunset over the valley. cont. pg 28

George and I did splurge for an optional excursion that really made our trip go from fantastic to phenomenal- a wonderful hot air balloon ride over the valley at sunrise. Our guide was spectacular. He set up the hot air balloon ride for a few of us, gave us direction for dining options, and was so knowledgeable- I mean he was truly phenomenal! And our trip was the best. Recipe
Blueberry Buckle An old family favorite
By Lisa Buckner
This is one of my favorite recipes for many reasons. It can be made with fresh or frozen blueberries. It it tasty warm or cold. When I take the recipe card out of the box, I see my mother’s handwriting and am reminded of when she made the cake. D I R E CT I O N S :
Thoroughly cream shortening and 3/4 cup sugar. Add beaten eggs and beat until light and fluffy. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and add to creamed mixture, alternately with milk. After rinsing blueberries and shaking off excess water, place in a bowl and sprinkle with 1/8 cup of flour and coat. Lightly toss into mixture with a spoon. Spread in greased (or Pam coated) 11x7x1-1/2” or 8x8x2” pan. I like use glass so I can make sure the edge isn’t getting too brown. Mix topping ingredients and sprinkle over mixture in pan. Bake in preheated 350 Degree oven for 45 minutes V AR I AT I O N S : Serve Hot or Cold
Healthy Morsel Tip of the Day! You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream! Les Brown

GARDENING BRANCH
Strong Roots
Live Vicariously Through Your Garden
O
ne of the fun things about gardening and farming is there are so many different types of vegetables and herbs you can grow. At Common Ground Farm we are always trying new varieties of plants. This past year we added parsnips, purple kohlrabi, black cherry tomatoes and a few others. Over the last year or so we have been seeing increased interest in turmeric and ginger so last year we decided to try them. Wow! I was amazed at how popular they were with our members and customers. Both are tropical or sub-tropical root herbs well suited for growing here in Florida. Turmeric comes from southern Asia and is more commonly used in dishes from India and that area. The plant grows about 4 feet high with large elliptical dark green leaves that have a waxy coating. Ginger is from Eastern Asia and is used more commonly in Chinese cuisine. It has a similar height but has a fan shaped leaf. They both produce a beautiful spray of flowers. The roots will sprout up with
EXCEPTIONAL SENIOR LIVING
the warmer weather usually in May. They then reproduce rapidly during the warm months. Left unharvested the plant will turn into an increasingly larger patch. It is recommended that once the plants die back with the first frost you harvest out the roots and save a few to replant for the next year. When you harvest the roots you can rinse them off then allow them to air dry. By storing them in a cool dry place they will last a long time. If the plant has done its job we find that we can get between five and seven pounds of the roots per plant. Surprisingly they are fairly easy to grow and only require periodic watering and a modest amount of fertilizer. So far we have found no pests or diseases that bother them here in Florida. Aside from their cooking qualities both herbs have an anti-inflammatory property that is part of the reason for their popularity. You can cook them into your meal, eat them raw or grind them up to make a tea without damaging this benefit. One word of caution on Turmeric though. It is a bright yel-
by John Joslin low orange and is known for its staining ability. Eating it raw can discolor you teeth. Cutting it on a counter can stain the counter so use a cutting board. We have enjoyed growing these two plants and look forward to many more seasons with them. If you decide to add them to your garden or even your landscape you can purchase bulbs on-line or even pick them up at a local health food store or grocery store. One word of caution: we have found turmeric spreads easily. Dropping even the smallest piece of a root can result in a plant where you might not want it. I hope some of you will decide to adventure out and try these herbs or some other new plants this season. Until next month remember today is a good day to have a good day. For more information or for any uestions you can contact John Joslin at the ommon round Farm - , E. Taylor d, eLand, FL or e-mail any uestions to strongroots.agingtree gmail.com

• Hearing Loss is the third most prevalent chronic condition in older Americans. • Hearing aids perform at their optimum when they receive quarterly maintenance/cleaning. • Ear wax removal should be done by a professional. Do not insert cotton swabs or other objects into your ear when attempting to remove wax. • Consult with your ENT physician (Ears, Nose & Throat) promptly for proper diagnosis if you experience a rapid/sudden hearing loss. • A baseline Hearing Test should be established around the age of 50 and repeated annually. • Use visual clues to help you better understand speech in noisy environments. • Because hearing loss is commonly a gradual process, friends and family members often notice your hearing loss before you do. • Noise exposure can be damaging to your hearing so ear protection should be worn. • Hearing Loss is about twice as common in people with diabetes compared to those without the disease.
