Crisp air, falling leaves, chunky sweaters and leather boots, football, pumpkins and steaming coffee: They’re all colorful and refreshing reminders that autumn is upon us. A change of seasons brings opportunities to refresh and start anew. Do you agree with Amelia that change can be rewarding? Sometimes, we need others to help us see what we can control and how we can change. Today, this idea brings me to the story of Mary. Mary, a working mother of two, is a happy person. She embraces life at each moment, and shares her joy with those around her. But, sometimes life’s challenges can overshadow the contentment and peace she usually experiences. You see, Mary helps care for her 80-year-old father and 97-year-old grandfather. Both have their unique health challenges, but Mary is dedicated to giving them love and support while helping them maintain their independence. Aging Tree became a partner in problem solving with Mary when her frustrations compounded in response to her father and grandfather’s failing health. At one point, the usually joyful Mary could hardly keep her composure day to day through the circumstances. Our team at Aging Tree assessed the situation and discovered many areas where Mary could make changes and take control; options that would give her and her loved ones some relief and provide peace of mind moving forward, too. One of the first ways we at Aging Tree help our clients is to identify what circumstances the client can control and change, and which ones they cannot. In Mary’s case, Aging Tree looked at several care options she could utilize for her family members, and offered technology that helped address her additional concerns. Sometimes, we all need someone who can bring understanding and answers that, to us, are too confusing and painful to see clearly. This edition of Aging Tree Illustrated provides some great ideas on assistive technology that you or your family members could use to help you control what you can control, so you can then address the rest, piece by piece. Assistive technologies include medication dispensers for compliance, equipment for prevention, personal emergency alerts buttons for help, and many additional products that can change lives for the better, too. Are you or a family member in a situation similar to Mary’s? Use her story and solutions to see how you may solve some of your own challenges. Simplify, control what you can control, and like Amelia Earhart reminds us, find your rewards in the process. So, as it surely will bring change, I hope this new fall season also brings you hope and happiness. Remember: You can do anything you decide to do. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

Technology for Seniors Consumer Guide to Helpful Products FEATURE ARTICLE
W
hen it comes to technology for seniors, the devil is in the details. If an item is too complex or too expensive, it will never be used. Aging Tree searched the industry and found some great easy to use products to help seniors maintain their independence. Medication dispensers are a prime example. According to Corey Shenk of Aging Tree, standard pill boxes work fine, if a senior is capable, however another option to consider is an automatic alarmed medication dispenser. “Automatic pill dispensers can be loaded with up to 30 days of dosages,” he explains. “You plug a MedReady Medication Dispenser into the wall and set up to four alarms each day, very similar to a wake-up alarm. The tray will automatically transfer to each dose and an access door will open. The dispenser is lockable and the user can only access a single dosage.” In addition, family members can monitor the Medication Dispenser. If Mom or Dad doesn’t access the tray within a certain time period, a monitoring center is notified that the medication wasn’t taken. “For example, if Mom doesn’t access the medication dispenser by 9 a.m., the monitoring center will call a family member and suggest, “You might want to give her a call. She didn’t take her medication this morning,” Shenk says. “We know that it works very well and the cost is about $50 dollars a month, which is pretty affordable for peace of mind,” he adds. “It’s a good example of how technology can help with compliance and you can control what you can control.” Captel Captioned Telephone Ideal for people with some degree of hearing loss, the Captioned Telephone, or CapTel, works like any other telephone with one important addition: It displays every
word the caller says throughout the conversation. CapTel phone users can listen to the caller, and can also read the written captions in the CapTel’s bright display window. How It Works: You dial the other person’s number, exactly the same way as with any other telephone. As you dial, the phone automatically connects to a free captioning service. When the other party answers, you hear everything they say – just like a traditional call.
The captioning service transcribes everything they say into captions, so you can read it too. The way you see captions on incoming calls depends on which CapTel model you use. With some models, people call your number directly like any other phone call. With other models, callers dial the captioning service first and enter your phone number. M a n y folks also haven’t heard about Integrated Wearable Technology. “Smart” insoles fit easily into most adult shoes and monitor the whereabouts of loved ones who may have a tendency to wander or at risk of becoming disoriented and lost. No need for them to remember to carry a separate tracking device, just slip on their shoes and go – like they normally would. Family members can track their location through any smartphone, tablet or web browser, set up text and e-mail alerts if they leave defined areas on a map. Cellular tech-

By Renee Garrison nology within GPS SmartSole enables connectivity in the United States wherever 2G T-Mobile and/or AT&T GSM coverage is available. GPS SmartSoles provide peace of mind for family members and those caring for the millions of people suffering from memory impairment and wandering caused by Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury or other cognitive memory disability. The monitoring is discreet because the ergonomic GPS SmartSoles slide into shoes and feel like regular insoles. Loved ones can be tracked unobtrusively and remain free from the stigma of “lock on” bracelets. Health-conscious seniors might consider a Fitness Tracker, a band worn around the er wrist (like a bracelet or watch) that monitors a variety of activities including accurate step counting, reliable sleep tracking or heart rate tracking. Prices range from $100 to $250 and there’s definitely something for everyone out there. Telehealth, or remote health monitoring, uses electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care. Remote patient monitoring can help keep individuals healthy in their home, without having to physically go to the providers’ office. It often includes live video interactions between a patient, caregiver, and provider. This is usually paid for by insurance companies, health management companies such as Worker’s Comp or by home health companies, when certain criteria are met. Costs average $250500 per month. For many families, technology has made face-to-face visits with elderly relatives easi-

er. Skype allows users to communicate over the Internet by voice using a microphone and by video using a webcam. Skype-toSkype calls to other users are free of charge, while calls to landline telephones and mobile phones (over traditional telephone networks)) are charged. The name for the software is derived from “Sky peer-to-peer”, which was then abbreviated to “Skype”. Another form of video chatting is FaceTime, a video-telephone product developed by Apple Inc. for Macintosh computers. Like Skype, FaceTime makes it possible to talk, smile, and laugh with anyone on an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac with a builtin camera. When you call someone on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, you see everything on the other end. A document repository allows seniors to store documents and treasured family photos via their computer. A number of free online document storage sites are available such as Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud. Recognizing that many people pay bills and manage their accounts through email, a growing number of states are passing digital estate laws. Executors or trustees are given the same control over those assets as they have with physical assets, such as safety deposit boxes and stock certificates, unless the person stipulates in his will that he or she does not want that information released. Make a list of your digital assets, including everything from hardware to social media accounts to online banking accounts to home utilities that you manage online. It’s generally a good idea to tell one or two people who you trust—your spouse or your adult children - where the plan is
located and how to access it. This means giving the person you trust the name of your attorney, the name of the online storage company you’ve used, or the location of keys or the combination to your safe. This way, when the time comes, the people who need to access the plan you’ve made can find the plan and access it. Jitterbug, is an easy-to-use cellphone with bigger buttons and a large screen. Unlike smaller cell phones which are difficult to dial (and overloaded with features that seniors never use,) Jitterbug is designed to be easy to navigate with “Yes” and “No” buttons. Since a common complaint among seniors is difficulty hearing the caller, Jitterbug contains a powerful speaker to keep conversations loud and clear. Plans begin at around $15 per month. TV·EARS helps people hear television dialog clearly while eliminating complaints about loud volume or the need to buy hearing aids. Seniors can turn them up as loud as they want while others listen to the television at a comfortable volume. They can even put the TV on mute and listen through the headset only. Others in the room won’t hear a thing. The amplifier eliminates fighting over the TV volume and allows a senior to listen in private while their spouse sleeps or reads. The device uses an advanced microchip that instantaneously amplifies and clarifies television dialog while dampening background sounds so that voices are
heard clearly. The words seem to jump out of the audio track, making even whispers and accents understandable. This technology also automatically lowers audio “bursts” during commercials to prevent jarring spikes in volume. Since driving can pose problems for seniors, public transportation systems such as Votran may be the solution. A service of Volusia County Government, Votran provides transportation to all urban areas of the county with a fleet of 56 fixed route buses, 44 paratransit vehicles, and a commuter van pool program. All Votran fixed route buses are wheelchair accessible with lifts or ramps. Operators are trained in wheelchair securement and aid to persons with disabilities. All buses kneel (the steps lower) or have low floors to make boarding easier for the elderly. Senior, disabled, or Medicare passengers pay half the regular fare. Buses are on a fixed schedule, the same time every day. Seniors don’t have to wonder what time their trip is scheduled or their bus is coming. Some
routes have a bus every 30 minutes. Safe and clean, all fixed-route buses are equipped with video cameras. A customer service representative is at the Votran transfer plaza in Daytona to help answer questions, and a security guard patrols the area. All stops that are printed on the Votran schedule and all major intersections are announced Sakowitz Eye Center is a multi-specialty eye center by the bus operator or the talking providing comprehensive medical and surgical eye care. bus system. Bone and Joint Health National Awareness
I’ve Got a Bone to Pick With You!
G
randma Marian, at the age of 93 has the smile of an angel as she goes about her day except for when she is standing up from a seated position. She winces a bit and simply says ‘hurts’. I am grateful that her discomfort appears momentary to her, perhaps due to her cognition, as she continues on with her walk without assistance. Chances are good that some part of this scenario resonates with you in some way. Did you know that bone and joint conditions are the most common cause of severe long-term pain and physical disability worldwide affecting hundreds of millions of people and more than half of the American population? Bone and Joint Health National Awareness Week, an annual global event will be held October 12-20 this year. Activities during this time are focused on disorders including arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, spinal deformities and trauma and are designed to raise awareness of prevention, disease management and treatments. The theme for this year’s World Arthritis Day (10/12) is “It’s in
your Hands Take Action” to empower those living with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases to take action every day to live life to the fullest. Let’s briefly explore what that means. Taking charge of our days and our health so that we can enjoy the optimal level of vi-
tality possible requires on going education. The more you know about your condition, the better you will be able to come to terms with situations and make the appropriate lifestyle decisions. Selfcare strategies also require the understanding and processing of our feelings which can include fear, anger, a sense of loss, frustration and isolation to name a few. These musculoskeletal conditions have a physical effect on the body as well as a psychological effect. Managing your emotions especially during times of feeling low or with increased pain, is a priority and may require additional help in the form of group or individual support. Keeping a journal of your symptoms and your emotions will be useful for your health care providers and can make it easier to have a conversation if you find it hard to talk about your condition with PLANT TODAY AND EAT Arugula + Chives + Celery others. By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP ful with managing discomfort as well. Physical activity and eating well are also foundational to increased vitality. Various forms of stretching to include Tai Chi, yoga and Pilates are forms of exercise that can be particularly beneficial for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. The slow, controlled movements allow you to stop whenever needed to avoid straining, or if experiencing increased levels of joint pain. They also help with balance, breathing and posture. Movement in the water supports your joints and the resistance as you move can improve muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. Prior to beginning your exercise regimen be sure to consult a health care professional. Certain foods have been shown to fight inflammation, strengthen bones and boost the immune system. The addition of the following foods to a balanced diet may help to ease your symptoms according to the American Arthritis Foundation: Omega-3 rich fish; nonGMO soybeans; olive, safflower, avocado or walnut oil; cherries and other red or purple fruits; leafy green vegetables; dairy, if eaten; broccoli, Brussel sprouts, kale, Swiss chard, bok choy; green tea, citrus, quality whole grains; red beans, kidney beans, pinto beans; garlic, onions, leeks; walnuts, pine nuts, pistachio nuts and almonds. Brightly colored orange and red hued vegetables, for example sweet potatoes, squash, carrots and red peppers are rich in carotenoids which some research suggests can decrease your risk for rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation. Lightly steaming in the cooking process helps to preserve the nutrients. There are numerous nutritional approaches available to decrease inflammation, support bone health as well as increase comfort and this is one of my most frequently requested workshops. In spite of the confusion that may exist about specific dietary approaches, there is little confusion in the medical literature about the value of increased whole food fruits and vegetables, decreased processed foods and limited salt and sugar. Spices that you use throughout the day to season your meals also provide support for decreased inflammation. Garlic, ginger, cayenne, cinnamon and turmeric, which is best absorbed when accompanied by black pepper, all provide anti-inflammatory support. cont. pg 16 | 14 |

Due to increasing life expectancy and changes in risk factors, the global prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions is predicted to greatly increase unless new treatments and preventive measures are found. Motivation is an essential key to success in managing musculoskeletal disease as it pushes aside “feeling stuck” and gives you the drive to move towards the goal of increased comfort and vitality. Motivation to move more, eat well, hydrate better, sleep more and stress less is not going to come to you; it is something you need to initiate, and create in collaboration with your health care team as needed, then follow through. Setting smaller measurable goals from the start is one way to encourage you on this journey. The variable most within our control is our mindset. It’s in Your Hands Take Action! Cheree M. VOTRAN RIDER TOOLS
Votran has made it easy to gather information via the Votran. org website, but what about when you are not at home with your computer? There’s an app for that. As Votran continually strives to make your riding experience as convenient as possible, we’ve introduced both a texting service and phone app to ensure you have all the information you need in the palm of your hand. While each rider tool works independently, utilizing both enables users to get the most up-to-the-minute news on anything and everything needed for a smooth trip! You don’t have to be text-savvy to use VO-TO-GO; it’s as easy as 123! To access real-time arrival and departure information, set up VO-TO-GO in your contacts list just like you would a friend. The phone number for this contact is 321-123. It is a special phone number just for this system. You don’t need a smart phone; any mobile phone with text messaging can be used. When you arrive at your bus stop, look for the blue-and-white VO-TO-GO placard attached to the bus stop post, which includes a Stop ID number. Send a text to your new contact at 321-123 with “VO” and your Stop ID number to find out the next three times any routes that visit that stop will arrive. Stop ID numbers can be used to find routes and locations on Votran’s online MyStop Live Bus Tracker as well! Prefer to use an app for your bus information? Simply download the free MyStop Mobile app from the iTunes or Google Play store. Wondering where the bus is? Mystop Mobile shows each bus in real time, so you’ll be able to track your bus and know exactly when it’s arriving. Need to know where the nearest Votran stop is to you? MyStop Mobile shows you where you are and how far it is to the nearest stop. Make sure your GPS function is enabled on your phone so that the app can locate you. MyStop Mobile also lets riders plan their trips! Riders can set up alerts regarding Votran service through the app and can make a reminder of bus arrival times at the stops they frequent most often. By signing up on the app, riders can receive real-time service alerts about buses being late or having to take a detour. With Vo to Go and MyStop Mobile, Votran puts convenience in the palm of your hand.

INSIDE ADVISOR Glaucoma is a disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. It is the second leading cause of blindness in the world – it is estimated that over 3 million Americans have glaucoma, but only half of those know they have it. Anyone can get glaucoma, but risk factors include having a family history, diabetics, and the elderly. African Americans have a higher risk as well. There are many types of glaucoma, but the most common type, open-angle, has no symptoms early in the disease. It causes gradual loss of your peripheral vision, and can lead to blindness if left untreated. Your ophthalmologist makes the diagnosis of glaucoma during an eye exam and looking at your eye pressure. While it is more likely you will develop glaucoma if your eye pressures are high, some people with high eye pressure never develop glaucoma, and some people with normal pressure can develop glaucoma. In addition to checking your eye pressure, your eye doctor

Your doctor may also use a diagnostic machine such as the OCT to visualize and asBy Nishita Patel, MD is irreversible so it is important to get diagnosed as early as possible. The only treatments available are those that lower intraocular pressure. Lowering eye pressure can be accomplished using eye drops, laser, or surgery. The choice of treatment depends on many factors, which are unique to each patient and should be discussed with your doctor. Currently there is no cure for glaucoma, but with early diagnosis and treatment your ophthalmologist can help control the disease before vision loss or blindness occur. sess damage to your optic nerve. If damage is severe enough, peripheral vision changes can be detected on a Visual Field Test. Patients won’t notice any vision changes until late in the disease when there is significant vision loss. INSIDE ADVISOR Have you ever wondered how much control you give up when you create a Revocable Living Trust a/k/a a Living Trust? Many do, and many don’t understand how a trust works. As a result, most people think that using a Trust is complicated, will reduce access to funds, and restrict how the funds can be invested. Nothing is further from the truth. I’m going to assume that you don’t have a Revocable Living Trust. When people consider using a Revocable Living Trust, they frequently hear complex and intimidating terms like, Grantor, Settlor, Trustee, Beneficiary, Residuary, Remote Beneficiaries, etc. They also hear that there are “rules” for the trust. All of it sounds overwhelming. So, they decide that a trust is too complex. It’s the lawyer that makes it complex – not the trust. Here’s what you can do with your money or property, a/k/a your things, when you properly use a Revocable Living Trust:
Legal - Revocable Living Trust • Control it, not a bank or trust company; • Use your things any way and any time you’d like; • Move money from one account to another; • Invest money however you would like; • There are no extra taxes or tax filings; • Give your things to whomever you’d like while you’re alive and well and after you pass; • Choose and change who manages your affairs when you can’t; • Choose who your things go to after you die quickly and efficiently without burdening your loved ones; and • Keep your affairs private, as no court filings are required. There are a lot of things that you can do when using a Revocable Living Trust that you can’t do without one. Such as: • Keep the money in the family, even when a surviving spouse gets remarried or has a new romantic partner; • Make sure that your child-in-law has no access or control over your child’s inheritance; • Make sure that your divorced child’s ex-spouse can’t touch your grandchild’s inheritance;
By Scott A. Selis, Esq. • Make sure that your child doesn’t lose their inheritance to bankruptcy, a divorce, business failure or wasteful habits; • Make sure that your hard earned savings stay in your family after you and your child passes; and • Make sure that your child isn’t disqualified from Government Benefits because of the inheritance. • The bottom line is that using a Revocable Living Trust actually makes your life simpler, not more complex. I would encourage you to speak with an attorney that is knowledgeable about trust planning. Scott Selis is a lawyer at Chiumento Selis Dwyer in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. Scott’s a member of the Task Force for the Elderly and is Administrative Committee Chair for the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section. He recently received the Elder Law Attorney of the Year Award. INSIDE ADVISOR What Kind of Dr. Should I See About My Pain? Lynn from Debary asked, “I think I have arthritis. Should I go see a Rheumatologist or Orthopedist? This is a great question. There are many different causes, symptoms, and treatments for joint pain described as “arthritis”. While both a rheumatologist and an orthopedic surgeon specialize in joint care, rheumatologists care for pain that is involved in many joints. Usually, there is a pattern of stiffness and pain not associated with an injury. Rheumatologists treat much more than joints, such as pain after tick bites and auto immune disorders.

Why Diabetic Shoes?
Feel Better and Get Results
D
ress shoes, sandals, slippers, athletic shoes and even steel-toed work boots: the variety of diabetic footwear styles has never been greater. “A lot of people are surprised,” says Certified Orthotic Fitter John Fiorito. “These don’t look like your grandfather’s orthopedic shoes.” Fiorito has been fitting folks with diabetic footwear designed to keep feet healthy for over 40 years. In fact, he was born into the business. “My dad had a repair and orthopedic shoe store in San Bernadino, California,” he says. “I grew up in that shop. “ According to Fiorito, diabetic footwear prevents injuries and problems in feet that may suffer from nerve damage or lack of sensation. “I make a mold of each foot and then create custom inserts of multi-density foam material,” he explains. “Loss of sensation in the feet is common for diabetics, so they might not know if a small shaving is pressing up against the skin and creating an ulcer. Custom shoes prevent an ulcer or worse – an infection – from happening below the skin. If an infection gets into the bone, it can result in an amputation.” But Fiorito has a solution for amputations, too: custom inserts with toe-fillers, for better balance as they walk.
“Devices are not invasive,” says Fiorito, who travels between stores in Altamonte Springs, Orlando and Aging Tree in Orange City to fit customers. “When they work, they really do help people live better without surgery or drugs. A script from your primary care physician is required to begin the process of ordering diabetic shoes. Once you have your prescription you come in with your insurance and fill out the necessary paper work. It’s approximately a 3 week process from start to finish. You are allowed one pair of shoes each calendar year and three sets of inserts.
By Renee Garrison
In addition to diabetic footwear, Fiorito fits knee braces to help support joints with osteoarthritis and back braces to correct a “C-shaped” spine. Though it takes a few weeks to get full relief, Fiorito says, “As soon as a customer wears a device, they feel better and get results.”
Products that Relieve Pain Like Fiorito, Bill Backer has helped Floridians live with less pain for the past 11 years. He works for Colonial Medical Suppiesy and offers a variety of items in the Aging Tree store in Orange City, from an electronic nerve stimulator designed to be an alternative to narcotic pain medications, to a Lift Chair that assists people with sitting and standing. “The Lift Chair is a huge benefit for folks who rely on others to help them up,” Backer says. “The chair aids in their independence.” So does the Knee Walker, an alternative to crutches or a wheelchair for people with foot and ankle injuries. “Using crutches is slow and painful, and you can’t carry anything with you,” he adds. Backer also suggests Ice/Hot Packs as an alternative to pain medication for pain and swelling. “They offer topical pain relief for bruises and strains without codeine,” he says. Removable casts called Fracture Boots, allow people more freedom in their daily activities and the ability to bathe easily. Compression Stockings stimulate circulation and eliminate the pooling of fluids. “Our ultra-sheer compression stockings look just like the kind you buy at Victoria’s Secret shops,” Backer says. “We sell to nurses who are on their feet all day and people who travel on airplanes a lot. Diabetics often use milder versions of the stockings to prevent water retention in their legs and feet.” He also recommends the Bio Bidet, a device that converts a regular toilet to a bidet - without the aid of a plumber. “People who have a hard time cleaning themselves, or suffer from hemorrhoids, can simply remove the toilet seat and lid. The device is simple to install and almost no tools are required – maybe a pair of pliers, at most.” Both Backer and Fiorito agree that simple solutions are often the best for helping people live more comfortably. Orlando Philharmonic
A Bounty Of Musical Riches In The Fall
M
usic Director Eric Jacobsen opens the Orlando Philharmonic’s 2016/2017 Season on October 1 with the first classical concert of the year, a tribute to Russian Masters -- Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. “This is some of the most richly evocative music ever written,” says Jacobsen. The love-themed evening begins with Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suites 1 & 2 and concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. In between, brilliant violinist Steven Copes, Concertmaster of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, performs Alban Berg’s beautiful and intense Violin Concerto. The concert is presented on Saturday, October 1, 8 p.m. at the Bob Carr Theater. The first opera of the season, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, has three performances -- October 13 (7 p.m.), October 14 (8 p.m.) and October 16 (2 p.m.). Maestro Eric Jacobsen, stage director Alison Moritz and choreographer John Heginbotham present their vision of Voltaire’s biting satire of inno-
cence and optimism with Bernstein’s witty, TONY Award-winning score. You’re invited to join Candide on his comic adventure around the world in this zany operetta that is fully-costumed and staged, and sung in English with supertitles. Candide is presented at The Plaza Live, located at 425 N. Bumby Avenue, Orlando. On October 22, audience favorite Albert George Schram conducts a program called Great American Songbook. This nostalgic nod to the most popular and enduring music of the 1920s to the 1950s, showcases the classics from Broadway, musical theater, and Hollywood films by great songwriters like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Jerome Kern. The concert has performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., at the Bob Carr Theater. The Focus Series, a five-concert chamber series, opens with Glorious Schubert on Monday, November 14, at 7 p.m. Eric Jacobsen conducts Schubert’s Gretchen am Spinnrade, The Brooks Lullaby and Symphony
No. 4 “Tragic.” Also on the program are Mendelssohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and John Adams’ Shaker Loops. This series is presented at The Plaza Live, Monday evenings at 7 p.m. Albert George Schram returns to conduct the beloved concert tradition, Home for the Holidays, on November 26, with performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The spirit of the season is celebrated with the festive sounds of The Holiday Singers, Opera Orlando Youth Choir, Celebration Ringers of First United Methodist Church Winter Park, vocalist Marsaisa Byrd and Rosie O’Grady’s Highlanders. This concert is presented at Bob Carr Theater. For more information on the entire season which runs through April 2017, visit www. OrlandoPhil.org or call the Box Office at (407) 770-0071.

Systems of Sight Every Person Is Unique
Systems of Sight has been serving people with macular degeneration for over 25 years, and has an A plus rating with the Better Business Bureau. Systems of Sight has helped many people maintain or regain a level of personal independence and lifestyle enjoyment. However, each person is different as to their eye condition, eye health, and their ability to adapt to the eyewear. Before scheduling a consultation, our staff interviews potential clients to determine whether their current eye health makes them a candidate for consultation. This interview is free to the potential client and can be done by a phone call to 800-435-7706 or by email.
Testimonials:
“Everyone is different your eyesight is different from mine. But for the small amount they charge for an examination, it’s worth a try. Go – Go! Try it! And you yourself can tell whether it helps or not. I’m very happy that my ophthalmologist sent me to them. There are so many gimmicks. One thing I will stake my money on. Those people are just as honest as the day is long.
By Denny Parker, CEO, Systems of Sight And that’s one thing that I do highly impress on anyone that calls me. They’re not out there to get your money or a gimmick of some sort. They are truly honest, and they don’t try to sell you on the idea. If you don’t think they help you, they don’t try to push you into getting them. They leave it up to you – you determine whether it helps your vision or not. They’re not there to try to sell, they’re there to try to help.” – Lillian H “It had become dangerous for me to even try crossing the street. Cars would disappear suddenly. It had also become difficult to read. My ophthalmologist told me there was nothing more he could do, so I pursued Systems of Sight. I no longer see that blind spot and cars don’t disappear. I can also read the newspaper.” – Rex E. “I was without any central vision, and we started looking around to see what we could find out…a friend of mine gave me a brochure from SOS. She lived in St. Petersburg and she went to an optometrist that had the brochures in his office and she sent me one. I immediately said, “I want to go ahead and try the glasses.” I really didn’t see a whole lot of difference when I first
put them on…and then that night we went to a little shopping mall that was near where we were staying and I went into a store and I picked up a price tag and I was able to read it. And it was…I just could not believe it.” – Miriam Y. “Most people don’t know unless they go get the exam if (Systems of Sight) is going to help them or not. And if they don’t, they might be passing up an opportunity that would really help them. You never know until you go see and that’s the most important thing – to do it.” – Arthur C. “My 41 year old husband David suffers from cone-rod dystrophy, it started affecting him in his pre-teen yrs. I can’t even begin to tell you just how much we appreciate your kindness!! I’m at a loss for words and an emotional mess. You just don’t know what you have done for us in so many different ways! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!” – Mrs. David S. It’s Time to Embrace Technology
It Doesn’t Have to Be This Complicated
N
o matter how hard we try, we are being dragged into the 21st century! We have technology all around us. We have way more ways to communicate then we ever have. If someone told us 30 years ago we would be ‘talking with our thumbs’, we would have thought them crazy! Remember those days when we would sit around the dinner table and talk? Now we still sit around the table but our children and their children are looking at their phones or taking pictures of the food!! But the up-side to this is that this same technology can help us in our everyday lives. Sure our children and grandchildren are ‘wizards’ with their devices, but we don’t have to be – we just need to filter out what we want and that is what this article is going to do. I will point out just a few devices we can use to make our lives a lot simpler – along with that, I will put some notes and references you can use to check them out yourself, so let’s get started;
Computers
If you have upgraded to Windows 10, you are already ahead of the game. One of the biggest additions is the introduction of Cortana, your voice activated personal assistant. There is a host of things you can tell her to do, such as; You must click on the icon to get here to start listening;
Once you have done so, a ‘pop-up’ will appear and you will see the word ‘listening’ in that space ‘Ask me anything’ will appear. From here you can ask some basic question; What is the weather like? - Show me directions to? What is on my schedule? – Show me my notes? What is the status of my flight? - How long will it take to get to (your destination)? Or more advances questions; ‘Create an appointment’ or ‘Move my appointment’ - ‘Set a reminder’ or ‘Show me my reminders’ ‘Set an alarm’ or ‘Show me my alarms’ - It can also do simple math, like percentages, addition, subtraction and division. And here is the best part, it’s FREE with Windows 10! Cortana can send and receive messages to Windows and Android phones. For a complete list of what you can do, just type into your browser, ‘Cortana Commands’. That should return a complete list of what you can ask Cortana.
OCTOBER 2016 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
By Christopher Theodore You really have to give Cortana a try – it can so much for you and costs you ZERO! Even if you have an older version of Windows (7 or 8.1) you can still use Cortana, you just need to upgrade to Windows 10 (unfortunately the ‘free upgrade’ period has expired a few months back. You can find the upgrade on the web for less than a $150.00). With a little cleanup and tune-up you should be ready to go.
Amazon Echo (also known as Alexa)
This device has some amazing capabilities! • Plays all your music from Prime Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and more using just your voice • Fills the room with immersive, 360º omni-directional audio • Allows hands-free convenience with voice-control • Hears you from across the room with far-field voice recognition, even while music is playing • Answers questions, reads audiobooks and the news, reports traffic and weather, gives info on local businesses, provides sports scores and schedules, and more using the Alexa Voice Service. I am really impressed that it controls lights, switches, and thermostats with compatible smart home devices such as: WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Insteon, Nest, and ecobee. Alexa, is always getting smarter and adding new features, plus thousands of skills like Uber, Domino’s, and much, much more. The price range on this device can be from $100.00 to $200.00 depending on what features you would like to add. To sum up, both of these devices are rather simple to use and set up – they both have capabilities straight out of Star Trek. There is no need to shy away from them, rather, embrace them and use them to their fullest. | 36 |

Celtic Sounds and Hints of Orange
A
s I sit here writing this month’s column the first hints of fall are upon us. The mornings and evenings have a crisp coolness to them. The sunlight has begun to soften to the duller yellows with hints of orange and red. The sounds of cicadas are giving way to migrating flocks of birds and geese. Even the scent in the air has begun to change. I find myself asking, “What happen?” It seems like just yesterday it was January and we were starting a new year. I know that many of you are feeling the same way. With a hurried life’s pace time just seems to fly and before you know it a particular time or event has come and gone without us taking a chance to savor it and enjoy the moment. My favorite time of year has always been the fall. I look forward to Mother Nature ushering in the cool dry days of autumn with its beautiful hues of red, orange and yellow. I enjoy the holidays, fairs, events and seasonal foods. But it is also a busy time for us on the farm as we prepare for the start of another season. I can get so busy that I don’t take the time to enjoy the season and
before I know it we are starting another year. This month I want to share a few ideas with you that I have found help bring some of the season to us every day. First take a little time to decorate. It doesn’t take long or cost much. Grab a few bales of hay from a local feed store. Find some dried corn stalks (we have some available), pump-
kins and decorative corn or a scarecrow. Set them up where you can see them frequently.
by John Joslin We place them along the front of our house and at the gate to the farm. That way we see them every time we leave and come home. Buy a scented pot that melts wax torts and fill your house with the smell of pumpkin spice or apple crisp or autumn scent each day. Try some seasonal drinks like apple cider or pumpkin or spice flavored teas and coffees. Add some seasonal desserts like pumpkin bread or pie to your meals. Even better bake or cook some seasonal favorites. Put some music on that reminds you of fall and the country. We often play Celtic or country instrumental music with its fiddles and dulcimer sounds. Finally take a few hours to spend with friends and enjoy the season. If you don’t take a few minutes to build these things into your life before you know it, the season will be gone and Christmas will be here. And like me you will be saying to yourself, “Where did it go?” I know I don’t want to miss another fall without taking some time to relish the season. Take the time not only to make today a good day but to make this season a great fall. Happy autumn! For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E. Taylor Rd, DeLand, FL 32724 or e-mail any questions to strongroots.agingtree@gmail.com

QUICK TIPS Hearing Health
Technology to Customize Your Hearing Needs After 20 years of being in the hearing healthcare industry, I’ve watched hearing aid technology continually improve over time and user acceptance of hearing devices increase largely due to more user friendly accessories and options available than ever before. Wireless connectivity to cell phones, televisions, remote microphones and personal remote controls all improve our patients’ ability to personalize their hearing care options and preferences to their needs and lifestyles. Gone are the days of the tiny screw drivers we used to make what limited adjustments we could to the sound of your hearing aid. Today’s clear, wireless, digital technology gives us the capabilities to fine tune your hearing aid for your particular loss, making it easier to hear in complex listening environments. We now have faster, better connections and many work well with cell phones. The new smart phone/hearing aid technology allows you to have telephone conversations directly through your hearing aids in stereo. The feedback from our patients is the tremendous improvement they hear in sound clarity and quality. They love that they can hear telephone calls in both ears at the same time. Another favorite feature is the relief from the fear of losing a hearing aid because the GPS in the phones works with your hearing aids so you can use your smart phone to find your hearing aids if you lost them. Try to do that 10 years ago. Today’s technology allows many easy to use accessories and options to help customize your hearing needs and your listening preferences. Proper communication is essential for conversations whether they be with Doctors, Bankers/Cashiers or the social interactions you’re having with your family and friends. “Hearing better is Living Better.” Tips: • Getting annual hearing evaluations after the age of 50 should be a very important part of your yearly wellness check. • Free caption telephones are available for individuals with certified hearing loss.
