n Monday, August 21, much of America was captivated by the idea that this few-times-in-a-lifetime experience was about to happen – the moon passed between the sun and Earth and blocked all or part of the sun for up to about three hours.
In the days leading up to the eclipse, you couldn’t find a single pair of solar eclipse “viewing” glasses anywhere – a product that wasn’t even available in mass quantities preceding the last eclipse on Feb. 26, 1979. Even months before the universe scheduled the solar eclipse on August 21, people were talking about it. Families were discussing road trips and late summer vacations. Cities were gearing up for an influx of tourists who wanted to watch the eclipse from the best possible position. I could feel the flurry of folks making plans, constructing solar viewers and begging their children not to look at the sun that afternoon. Schools adjourned early or corralled students into windowless rooms until it was all over. I get it. Preparing for something IMPORTANT is EXCITING! At Aging Tree Illustrated, we are constantly beating the drum of preparation. Over and over, with every issue, we remind readers of the value of planning. Even in this issue we talk about making the transition from living at home to living in a facility, write about preparing documents, and explain how to shore up estates. Social security? It’s always on our mind. Veterans insight? We have it covered. Is this kind of planning exciting? Maybe. Is it important? Definitely. What if we were to take planning for our golden years and end of life as seriously as we took preparing to experience the Great American Eclipse? What if we put as much energy and interest into our futures and our families’ futures as we do experiencing the moon blocking the sun? That kind of planning would be more spellbinding than any celestial event, and its impact would last more than a couple hours on a Monday afternoon. Take the time to be proactive about your future. It may not be as easy or as fun as a solar eclipse, but the supernatural experience of the peace of mind that planning provides is truly out of this world. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

Being Proactive Part 3
Don't Get Caught With Your Pants Down! 5 Ways to Prepare for Your Senior Retirement Before You Get There.
This is the third article in a three-part series about being proactive in planning for your future care. In the first part, we focused on the importance of this mindset, and in the second, we looked at tangible steps to take. In this issue, we discuss the benefits of early planning and overcoming the misconceptions about the options available.
M
any of us don’t start thinking about planning for senior living and care until our parents decide the house we grew up in is just too much work and they would rather spend time golfing than mowing the grass. Even as we spend time with mom and dad looking at brochures for senior communities or facilities that offer medical care depending on the situation, we still may not be considering our own futures. After all, we may only be recent empty nesters, still contributing to our 401Ks, and planning our next island getaway. And that’s just it. In our 40s and 50s, and even into our 60s, the term “senior” only applies to other people. We likely spend months, sometimes years, planning for vacations that last two weeks, but rarely do we think about how we can best enjoy our later years.
How do we adopt a more proactive mindset in the first place? One of the reasons we don’t is the pervasive misconception that living options like independent living and assisted living = nursing home. In fact, the differences are significant, from amenities to levels of care. One thing our staff at Aging Tree tries to drive home to readers is be informed! And with this series…be pro-active! Whether you’re in your 70s and aware of a need for a change or you’re in your 50s and helping parents with their planning, you can be proactive in planning TODAY. The time to learn about your options and talk with your spouse and family is before your health changes and you don’t have as much autonomy and choice. This definitely requires a change in mindset from reactive to proactive, from I-don’t-wantto-think-about-getting older to a

positive, forward-looking perspective. After all, people are living longer and staying active and more mobile than ever. Now is the time to figure out what kind of living situation and community will best fit--and even evolve with--their wants and needs. So let’s help start with getting over that first hurdle and once again explain the main differences in three of the most common senior living options, Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Nursing Homes. For more comprehensive descriptions of each, click the links if you’re reading online or visit our website for more information. Independent Living--Independence is always the goal. And moving into a community can be the best way to achieve it, as counterintuitive as that may seem. Think about it, at some point you may want to put more energy into enjoying time with friends than trying to keep up with maintaining a house. Also known as retirement villages or 55+ communities, they offer activities and amenities galore. This option is often the first step for those seeking minimal help with daily living such as housekeeping. Residents may live in an apartment complex setting and pay monthly rent or purchase homes. These kinds of facilities offer no medical or personal care services. cont. pg 10 |8|

Depending on the community, they may be more like those vacations we are fond of planning. “We were visiting my parents at their senior community and having lunch in one of the restaurants when music suddenly started playing,” says Carol M. “People left their tables and just started dancing.” Carol says her parents have every amenity at their fingertips, including classes and facilities to support their interests and hobbies. In addition, they have developed a close-knit group of friends they can enjoy and rely on. Assisted Living Facilities (ALF)--These communities, which provide an apartment-like living for seniors, are designed for people who need, as the name suggests, more assistance but are still enjoying a certain level of independence. These facilities can provide a vibrant atmosphere for residents. Depending on the facility and the services it offers, that care may include everything from meal preparation to housekeeping and other daily activities. ALFs provide social interaction and can even have a country club feel, offering amenities such as golf courses and spas (although these types of communities come with a heftier price tag). ALFs and nursing homes usually differ in three major ways: 1) setting, 2) a resident’s level of independence and the level of care provided, and 3) cost. Nursing Homes--People usually enter nursing homes when they need skilled nursing care following a hospital stay or when they have experienced a significant decline in health. Unlike assisted living facilities or short-term care in a nursing home, long-term nursing home care becomes nec-
essary when a person can no longer function independently due to a high acuity level (i.e., the level of severity of a condition) or a person has no other place to go. In these cases, a nursing home can be the appropriate option. Now is the time to leave misconceptions behind, adopt a proactive mindset, and start planning your ideal senior lifestyle. Here are five ways to get going... 1. Learn--Reading articles like this is a great start. Aging Tree magazine is an amazing resource for finding out more about senior living options and related topics. Even better, you can visit Aging Tree for no-cost advising. From private pay to 100% insurance-covered programs, Aging Tree specializes in helping you find and compare the right senior care options. Whether you are being proactive about your future living or you want to educate yourself to better help an aging parent, our staff will provide informative and educational guidance. 2. Discuss--Spouses especially need to figure out a plan for their future, together. Armed with information, consider your options as you talk about your dreams and expectations. Bring other trusted family members into the process or once a decision has been made. (Read Part 1 of this series in the July 2017 issue for more on the benefits of planning.) 3. Save--Talking to a trusted financial advisor can help you figure out ways to save for your future. Here’s another misconception to overcome--contrary to popular belief, Medicare doesn’t pay
SEPTEMBER 2017 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
for long-term care. An advisor can help you understand what your anticipated expenses may be and how you can save now, such as by contributing the maximum amount to your 401K. 4. Insure--Long-term care insurance is one of the ways you can help ensure supporting your senior living. Depending on the policy, costs of apartment-style ALFs may be covered, as are aspects of other care facilities like nursing homes. One of the important things to remember is that being pro-active and purchasing this kind of insurance earlier in life pays--or rather you don’t pay--since the premium costs are lower the younger and healthier you are. 5. Anticipate--Sure...we never know what the future holds. But we have to ask ourselves why we plan more for a shortterm trip to Disney World than we do for a time in our lives that could last for years. One way you can anticipate the kind of life you may live is to take an honest look at the life you’ve been living. Chances are if you’ve taken care of yourself and are aware of the warning signs of conditions that run in the family, like high cholesterol or diabetes, you can expect to live a longer life. Now start planning how you want to spend it! If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Aging Tree or any of their approved Business Partners by calling 1-866-320-8803.

Clearing the Clutter Part 2 20 Tips to Clear the Clutter LIVING WELL BRANCH
L
ast month we began the conversation about challenges to clearing the clutter in our homes. This often becomes a more urgent priority when needing to move to a smaller place or assisted living. Creating the mindset for managing the clutter is an important first step for this process and will pave the way for a less stressful more efficient experience. Marni Jameson, author of Downsizing the Family Home, shared her goal for this process: “I wanted to be respectful of my parent’s belongings, honor their lives, be a
good steward of their assets and preserve their past and mine. At the same time, I didn’t want to be weighed down by more stuff,
even if it meant something and it almost all did.” Ready to tackle the actual process of “right sizing” our stuff? Generally, I am referring to a move to a smaller space though the principles apply to a variety of the everyday scenarios we all face. Here are 20 tips for clearing the clutter: 1. consider working in smaller blocks of time, for example 2 hours, when possible to conserve energy and manage stress. Once an area is completed you will be encouraged to move on to the next. 2. Consider a senior move specialist service, skilled at both the emotional and logistics of this transition. 3. Determine the size of space in the new location and identify a comparable space in the existing location. This will provide a visual guide for the amount of stuff that will actually fit. Assist in identifying objects to be given as gifts or inheritances and do this now. Toss stained, chipped or broken items. Toss or donate replaceable items that are not move worthy, for example old magazine collections deemed of no current value. Only Handle It Once (OHIO) Important paperwork may be an exception to this rule and can be boxed to take care of later. Ask these questions when sorting: Do I need it? Will I use it? Do I love it? Am I keeping it out of guilt? and Will it burden my children? Alternately when talking to the homeowner, consider pre-soting and a simple yes-no option for example: Here is your white sweater, blue sweater and your raincoat. Does that sound good? 9. Focus on the most used items and apply the sorting questions from above. Let the rest go. 10. For large collections of photos consider digitizing images and print for display on a wall. 11. Choose first what to keep rather than choosing what to let go. This method of organizing the purge will result in fewer things saved. INSIDE ADVISOR Legal - Legacy Estate Planning Month after month, you read articles in Aging Tree Illustrated about the importance and value of estate planning. Congratulations! The message is sinking in, and you’re making a plan that will benefit your family for years, decades, perhaps generations, into the future. So, at this juncture, the word “legacy” may be popping up for you. “Legacy Estate Planning,” as we call it in the financial services world, is about more than leaving resources behind to your family. It’s about strategically leaving resources for your family, so your estate can do the most good for the most years. It’s an honorable pursuit, and for most families, it’s an absolute necessity. Legacy estate planning is not about money, it’s about intentional-
ly planning for its use by those you love. It’s about setting up parameters and allowances; setting up rules and boundaries. Your children love you, and your grandchildren love you, too. You want to leave them any and all inheritance you can when you pass from this world, but you have specific ideas on how it would benefit them most. In short, you realize they may need to get out of their own way to make the best choices with the resources you leave for them. When you create a Legacy Estate Plan, you can include language and stopgaps that help your loved ones correctly manage the funds you have gifted them. In the documents you create with your advisor, you can set parameters for use of what by whom and when. If you’re worried about inlaws, include restricting language to that regard. If you’re concerned about someone being taken advantage of by another, put parameters in place

to prevent it. This is the beauty of the peace of mind you can experience with a Legacy Estate Plan. Help your loved ones help themselves, and create a space in the future where your estate can be its most effective in the lives of those you love most. It’s time to plan. Do it in a way that’s worthy of your legacy. It’s this legacy, not the money, that will make the biggest difference in the lives of those you love. Scott A. Selis is the 2016 Elder Law Attorney of the Year with offices in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. He serves on the Legislative and Medicaid Committees of the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section.

Eye Health
Safely Watching a Solar Eclipse Almost every year, individuals from different parts of the world get to experience a solar eclipse. It is a memorable phenomenon that should be experienced by everyone in the eclipse path, but it is essential that viewing is done safely. Viewing the sun directly, even for brief periods, can cause permanent damage to your eyes and result in blindness. There is only one safe way to look directly at the sun during an eclipse: through special-purpose solar filters. These solar filters are used in “eclipse glasses” or in handheld solar viewers. They must meet a very specific worldwide standard known as ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Steps to follow for safely watching a solar eclipse: • Look at your solar filter or eclipse glasses and make sure
they meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. • Before looking at the sun, stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer. After glancing at the sun, turn away and remove your filter—do not remove it while looking at the sun. • Never look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars or other similar devices. This is important even if you are wearing eclipse glasses or holding a solar viewer at the same time. The intense solar rays coming through these devices will damage the solar filter and your eyes. Viewing even the smallest sliver of a crescent sun peeking out from behind the moon is enough to cause irreversible damage to your

Are Frequent Falls a Sign of Something? By the time you’ve finished reading this short article, thousands of older adults will have fallen—and for many, it won’t be for the first time. An older adult falls every second of every day in the US. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death among people 65 and older, and the risk increases with age. Yet falls don’t just happen. And people don’t fall just because they’re older. There often is at least one underlying cause or risk factor involved. The person’s eyesight,
hearing and/or reflexes might not be as sharp. Diabetes, heart disease or other medical issues can affect balance. Some medicines can cause people to feel dizzy or sleepy, making them more likely to fall. But frequent falling, resulting in 911 calls, hospitalizations and/ or surgeries, can indicate that a person is not doing well overall. In fact, increased falls is one of the guidelines for considering hospice. It’s not the only sign,
of course. Doctors evaluate the whole patient to determine if a person is nearing the end of life. Factors like repeat hospitalizations, falling, pain, weight loss and increased fatigue are considered, along with a person’s medical conditions, in making the diagnosis. If you or a loved one is falling more often, consider asking your doctor for a full evaluation so you will know what options are available. For more information about VITAS Healthcare, visit VITAS. com or call 386-671-2792.
At VITAS, the focus is on LIFE When a loved one becomes seriously ill, it can be difficult to know what type of care is best, or where to turn for help. VITAS can help. HealthMed Solutions, Inc. Do You Want to Buy my used Band-Aid? PRODUCT BRANCH
Medical equipment and supplies serve a need when they are delivered, but there may come a time when the equipment is no longer needed. As a medical equipment dealer, we get calls all the time offering us used wheelchairs or oxygen concentrators. Unfortunately, the equipment often requires more parts and service than what a brand-new piece would cost. And because we at HealthMed Solutions care about your safety and wellbeing, we also worry about the equipment breaking when being sold used, and brand new medical equip-

peace of mind. There are many outlets for used equipment and many places to donate them. There is a large market for used equipment on Craig’s List, Facebook, Ebay and many other sites. One of the first
things to consider when selling your used equipment is safety. If you choose this route, please make sure you are in a public location. Many police stations have created safe trade/safe deal zones for your protection. A great reason to hold onto your equipment is because most insurance companies will only provide certain equipment once every 5 years. (There may be certain provisions for extensive damage to wheelchairs.) If you hold on to these pieces, it could save you hundreds of dollars. From personal experience, I cannot tell you how many people in my fam-

ily used the same set of crutches over the course of ten years. Many things that are offered by medical equipment companies require a prescription according to the FDA regulations. Oxygen, CPAP, BiPAP, Nebulizers and other respiratory equipment must be sold by an approved licensed provider, this means that they are unable to be resold by the public. You can donate these items to organizations that will provide them to a patient through a licensed company. The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) accepts donations for local vets. The Goodwill accepts donations as well. The cost of the equipment through insurance is often high where the secondary market is pennies on the dollar. If you donate a $5,000 wheelchair to an organization you get the full tax value of that
donation where as if you sell a product you may only get a few dollars for it and have risked your safety during the sale. If you have used walkers or manual wheelchairs you want to get rid of let HealthMed Solutions know about it and perhaps we could help someone in our community that cannot afford to purchase equipment. If you are contemplating purchasing used supplies, please be aware of the rules and dangers of getting equipment that requires a prescription. Some items require personal settings for the individual, and their personal diagnosis. Scooters and power wheelchairs require batteries that can be expensive, as much as $400 for a set. Before you pay $400 for a power chair, please understand that you may need to pay $800 or more and have no guarantee that
the equipment will work for any length of time. A scooter that has sat in a garage for over a month without a charge can drain the batteries completely, rendering them useless. It is recommended to charge your scooter or wheelchair at least once a week to prevent the batteries from draining completely. HealthMed Solutions is here to help with service or equipment repairs, you can reach us at 800922-3000 any time Monday thru Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Aging Tree by calling 1-866-320-8803. We are all here to help with our expertise to make things safer and create a simpler lifestyle.

MAKE A PLAN FOR HURRICANE SEASON
For many, 2016 will be the year Volusia County residents experienced the impact of a hurricane in more than a decade. Volusia County Emergency Management reminds Volusia County residents to make sure they plan ahead and are prepared for hurricane season, which is from June 1 to Nov. 30. It’s important to keep in mind that when it comes to hurricanes, it only takes one storm to change your life and community as was the case with Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Every family should create a disaster plan and have their disaster supply kits. Additionally, residents should decide in the planning stages where they will stay if an evacuation order is issued. If planning to evacuate to a hurricane shelter, residents should determine if they would seek shelter at a general population or pet-friendly shelter, or if they need assistance at a special needs shelter or will need to seek shelter at a medical facility that can manage their medical needs. Elderly, physically, mentally or sensory disabled, visually or hearing-impaired residents or those who need supplemental oxygen should register for the Special Needs Shelters (SpNS) program with Volusia County Emergency Management. For more information on SpNS, visit www.volusia.org/ emergency and click on “Before a disaster” in the left-side menu. During emergencies, when an evacuation order has been given, Votran fixed routes will continue normal routing. All Votran bus stops are evacuation collection points during a declared emergency evacuation order and no fares are charged during an evacuation or return. Remember that all Votran vehicles must be removed from roads when winds are sustained at 35 mph. If Special needs evacuees cannot reach a regular bus stop, they must call Votran to arrange transportation. Because bus space is limited, carry on items are limited to a pillow, folding lounge chair, blanket and one carry-on bag (not larger than 22”x16”x8”). For help creating a personalized family disaster plan, visit www.floridadisaster.org, www.RedCross. org or www.Ready.gov. For more information on Votran, call 386-761-7700 or visit Votran.org. By Amanda M. Vallone And while we’re up there, how could we not make a stop at Dollywood for their Christmas Celebration? Millions of twinkling lights are arranged into festive displays all over the town. Their Christmas parades and shows are some of the best the Smoky Mountains have to offer; the event wins awards year after year. This year, we want to be a part of the spectacular traditions there, celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. To top it off, we’ve got reserved seating for the Smoky Mountain Opry’s Christmas

Samson in the ‘original superhero.’ He can defeat entire armies and slay lions – but there’s a catch to his superpower: He must follow the rules. This is a difficult task for Samson, and his appetite for pleasure and lack of self-control jeopardize his mission. He’s a frequent failure, an underachiever. We can’t wait to follow him through his battles with the Philistines to his temptations and failures in becoming the superhero we all know him to be.

Hinman II, MD sees the potential for health improvement in every patient who walks through his door. “The physical well being of anyone who walks in this office can be improved in one form or another-usually by focused patient efforts with us educating and assisting them,” he explains. “Whether that’s helping them quit smoking, beginning an exercise regimen, or changing their diet, motivated patients are the key to success.” After 17 years in the U.S. Army as a Calvary Officer, including serving as a foreign military advisor teaching anti-tank tactics to the Saudi Arabia National Guard (he speaks Arabic and Spanish), Doctor Hinman made a career change to pursue medicine. Dr. Hinman earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Tulsa University
and a Master’s in Human Resource Management from Pepperdine University. In 1987, he earned his medical degree from Universidad Tecnologica de Santiago in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This experience and medical training in the Caribbean helped lay the groundwork for starting his own family practice, Island Doctors, in October of 1991. Today, the practice has grown to over thirty locations across North Florida specializing in health improvement with a focus on cholesterol reduction, lowering blood glucose in diabetics, smoking cessation, and fat loss. Ten offices are currently located in Flagler and Volusia County. “We need to make efficient use of the patient’s time and resources to come to their diagnosis and treat-

ment plan”, he explains. “We, at Island Doctors, really pride ourselves on being a health improvement organization. When a patient walks through our doors, the first thing my staff and I do is evaluate what we can do to help the patient look and feel their best, which places them on the top of their individual health pyramid.” Whether it’s cholesterol reduction, lowering blood glucose in diabetics, smoking cessation, or assisting patients in their weight loss, “the future of medicine in Florida must emphasize health improvement, thus creating a healthier, energetic, and longer living community.”

Know A Stroke's Warning Signs
Where You Go for Rehabilitation
DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE
By Better Care for Stroke Rehabilitation, HLS, Staff Writer A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When this happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die. For this reason, some people compare a stroke to a heart attack. It is important to know a stroke’s warning signs and call 9-1-1 immediately should you notice the following stroke symptoms: • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech • Face drooping • Severe headache with no known cause • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Walking difficulties The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) has issued its first guidelines on adult stroke rehabilitation calling for intensive, multidisciplinary treatment. Stroke rehabilitation at HealthSouth Altamonte Springs consists of a coordinated treatment plan developed and implemented by specialized physicians, therapists, nurses and other team members. HealthSouth Altamonte Springs has always provided a higher level of care to the people it serves. And now its commitment to stroke rehabilitation is visible via recognition by The Joint Commission. To learn more and begin restoring hope, contact HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altamonte Springs at 407 587-8600.
Designed to return patients to leading active, independent lives, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altamonte Springs is a 50-bed rehabilitation hospital that offers specialized inpatient programs for amputee, hip fracture, joint replacement, multiple sclerosis, neurological conditions, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injury, stroke and traumatic brain injury.

VA Benefits
How to Get VA Services Through a Volusia County VA Counselor
B
etter late than Never! Many veterans have avoided approaching the VA for many years and for many reasons. Not the least of which is the confusion over how to best communicate with the “VA”. Some may even feel that they are not entitled for various reasons. Applying for and actually receiving VA benefits is quite a lot like doing your own taxes. You may muddle through all that convoluted federal tax law but you may very well cost yourself money by not using the expertise of a certified tax professional. We feel that we owe our veterans a debt that can never be repaid and we strive to represent them fairly before the Veterans Administration to obtain any and all benefits to which they may be entitled. If you haven’t had a formal conversation with an accredited Veterans Service Officer about your time in service, I encourage you do so as soon as possible. If you’ve been denied by the “VA” in the
