CARE FOR CAMBODIA In 1975 Cambodia was a mainly agricultural country. Pol Pot decided it should be completely agricultural. This meant all the people from the towns and cities were forced to move to the countryside. Pol Pot also decided that agricultural output should double in 4 years (a totally unrealistic target). Private property was banned and collective farms were formed. They were supposed to grow 3 tones of rice per hectare (again a completely unrealistic target). People were made to work very long hours to try and grow the extra rice. They were given insufficient food and many fell ill and died from a combination of exhaustion and malnutrition. That was not all. Religion was banned in Cambodia (people caught practicing Buddhism were executed). Family relationships were banned (on the grounds that parents exploited their children). Furthermore the smallest infringement of the rules resulted in execution. Although they were half starved people caught foraging for food were executed. Needless to say anyone who complained was executed. Furthermore the Khmer Rouge murdered intellectuals. Soon people who could speak a foreign language or who wore glasses were executed. This nightmarish situation was only ended by a war with Vietnam.
This was what happened from the past; however, the consequence is still affecting until today. As matter of fact, it's because there were no more intellectuals in Cambodia. We see the importance of Leadership, and this is why AIESEC is relevant in Cambodia that we place confidence in youth leadership. On top of that, AIESEC in Cambodia aim to make summer projects that impact on Cambodia on the following area: Education, Clean Water & Sanitation, Decent Work & Economic Growth, Responsible Consumption and Climate Action. In appliance with UN's Global Goals:
Beyond Your Dreams
BEYOND YOUR DREAMS Goal #4: Quality Education Target: 4.1 - By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.
"Beyond Your Dreams" is a 6-week project that aims to enable underprivileged children and youth to expand their language literacy and mindset . During Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, all educated people were killed especially teachers, therefore, Cambodia is still struggling from the aftermath due to lack of competent teachers that affects the young generation. Moreover, ASEAN integration is going to happen and Cambodia is not ready especially for young people that they are still lack of language literacy and international mindset. Therefore, Education is the key to be ready for changes and be outstanding in the regional and global network. The specific target for the project are young people range from age 5 to 18.
The project will be happening in Phnom Penh, capital city of Cambodia from June to August 2017. The interns who take part of the project can be from any part of the world, preferably Asia Pacific region. The project makes impact by going to the organization directly to teach the children and youth about English and also diverse culture.
