SPARKLING TIMES AHEAD! The days are getting shorter and the temperatures are falling. What better to do than curl up with a mug of hot cocoa and our Winter Special 2016/2017? The end of December always brings mixed feelings for me, as one year approaches its end and a new one sits at the starting line. I always reflect on the past year, filled with ups and downs. What worked out well, what didn’t, and why? At the same time, I look to the coming year filled with hope, positive energy, and feeling ready for action. I am excited for all the new adventures and opportunities that life – the greatest adventure – has in store for us. But let’s get back to the end of 2016 and the holiday season – that special time of year that reunites us with our loved ones. These unforgettable occasions are your chance to sparkle and shine, which is why we put together some festive looks for inspiration. Whether for family celebrations or amongst colleagues or friends – with these outfits, you’re sure to make a brilliant impression on Christmas or New Year’s Eve. We’ve also included glittery make-up suggestions to help you shine bright like a diamond all evening long. In addition to style for the holidays, this issue features fashion and beauty articles for the remaining winter months. We’ve brought you several do-it-yourself face masks – all healthy, quick, and delicious! This winter special also includes a wide range of articles, like how to spot a man who can’t commit, the reasons why green is the new sexy, ten tips to get yourself exercising, and how to differentiate winners from losers, just to name a few! For now, I’d like to wish you and your loved ones a wonderful, peaceful holiday season and a Happy New Year. Goodbye, 2016 and welcome, 2017 – please be good to us! Happy reading, and until 2017: stay warm and remember to sparkle wherever you go! Cheers, Corinna Violetta Kolonko Editor-in-Chief Ajouré International /AjoureGermany

• BEAUTY HACKS LITTLE BEAUTY TRICKS NEVER HURT! A FEW HELPFUL TRICKS FOR YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

NAIL POLISH REMOVER

Make your own matte lipstick: first apply your favorite lipstick color, dab with a tissue and dust your lips with translucent powder.

If you don’t have nail polish remover on hand, apply clear nail polish over your old coat. After it dries, your nail polish will be easier to chip off.

ON THE ROAD For traveling, save space by putting your favorite creams for eyes and lips in a contact lens case.

EYELASH CURLER

BRIGHT EYES

To get the fullest curl, warm your eyelash curler with a hair dryer right before using.

Use blue mascara to make your eyes pop! First apply your usual coat of black mascara, then apply blue mascara to the tips of the upper eyelashes.

Ground coffee is an excellent exfoliator and also fights cellulite.

Heat your hair mask or conditioner for 15 seconds in the microwave before applying. The heat lifts the top layer of the hair follicle, which allows the active ingredients to be better absorbed into the hair shaft.

SMOOTH LIPS For softer kisses, massage lips for thirty seconds with a wet toothbrush – then apply a thin layer of honey!

UNDER-EYE CIRLCES

SHARPER EYELINER

Potato slices are great for puffy eyes and dark circles! Cut cold, raw potatoes into slices and lay them on your eyes for 15 minutes – eyes will be moisturized and lose their swollen appearance.

Cosmetic pencils can sharpened more easily if they are left in the fridge overnight. This fixes the pencil lead, which then won’t break off while being sharpened.

RED EYE SOLUTION White eyeliner pencil brightens and visually eliminates the appearance of red eyes! To get this effect, apply white eyeliner to the entire inner rim of your eyelid.

Incredible-smelling perfumes for hair belong in every girl’s bathroom! Here’s why.

What makes hair fragrances different from regular perfumes? Compared to normal scents, hair perfumes contain special ingredients that nourish hair and include hardly any alcohol, which dries hair out quickly. The UV filters that hair mists contain also protect hair against harmful radiation. Why should I use hair perfume? Unpleasant odors easily settle into hair. Fragrances neutralize odors between shampoos and restore freshness without give hair an excessive perfume smell. How is hair perfume applied? Hair perfumes are sprayed on dry hair from a distance of about 8 inches. Two to three spritzes are usually enough. How long do they last? Because hair perfumes contain almost no alcohol, the fresh scent lasts only a few hours. But they can be reapplied as often as desired with no danger of stressing hair. Can normal perfume be used in addition to hair fragrances? As long as your hair perfume and your regular fragrance have the same top note, they can be combined without the risk of clashing scents.

Lyndie Greenwood Ajouré: What inspired you to become an actress? Lyndie Greenwood: I’ve always loved to pretend. When I was little, I’d read books aloud to myself and pretend to be the different characters. I’d do all the different accents, and if there weren’t any accents in the story, I’d make them up. It’s hard to describe, but for me, playing with emotion just feels good – even when the emotion you’re exploring is one we’d tend to think of as “bad.” I didn’t initially want to act professionally, however. I went to school for biology, but didn’t really know what I wanted to do. Ajoure: How did you start your acting career? Lyndie Greenwood: I was finishing up my Bachelor of Science degree when someone offered me a role in a short Kung Fu film. Working on that project is what made me realize I wanted to act professionally. I started to study and audition, and audition and audition, and eventually I started to book things. Small things at first, but every job taught me something valuable. Ajouré: If you weren’t an actress, what profession would you choose? Lyndie Greenwood: I would probably like to start a restaurant. My mother owns a restaurant called Antoinette’s in Whitehorse, Yukon, and my grandma used to own one as well. Maybe it’s in my blood!

Interview Ajouré: What do you love most about your character in Sleepy Hollow ? Lyndie Greenwood: I love that Jenny Mills is strong, fearless, and intelligent. She will always get the job done. She’ll never leave you hanging. Ajouré: What has been the craziest experience on set? Lyndie Greenwood: Recently while shooting a scene outside the capitol building in DC, we had to pause the production for protesters. A group of teenagers held signs, and chanted, “Not my president,” and “Young voices matter!” It was my first time in DC, and I also just recently got my green card, as I’m from Canada – it felt like perfect timing to see this wonderful group of youngsters exercising their rights. Ajouré: What is your dream role and who would be your co-star? Lyndie Greenwood: I would love to play Susannah Dean from The Dark Tower, but I think they’re looking at Naomi Harris for it. I think she’s fantastic, so I’d be fine with that, if anyone cares to know. I’ve also always wanted to play Billie Holiday. I’m sure there’s a role for Donald Glover in that movie, too. Ajouré: You look amazing! Tell us something about your beauty routine! Lyndie Greenwood: Thank you! I keep my routine simple. I diffuse my hair after the shower to get my curls their curliest. If I’m off work, I usually wear mascara, but not much other makeup. When I’m going to events that have a carpet, I’ll usually get professionals to pretty me up, as I’m not very good at it on my own. To stay fit, I love to run and do Pilates.

Interview Ajouré: What was your biggest beauty and fashion mistake? Lyndie Greenwood: I’ve definitely made some mistakes! I’ve learned that an outfit that looks great in person doesn’t always work in pictures. So, if you’re walking a carpet, it’s best to photograph your outfit to see if the Internet will be kind later. Ajouré: What do you think of the exposure on social media today? Is it helpful? Lyndie Greenwood: It is and it isn’t. I enjoy being able to connect with people that I normally wouldn’t be able to connect with. But I don’t enjoy the idea of my life being constantly on display. I think I’m a private person in many respects, and social media is a little counter-intuitive, in that sense. Ajouré: Where will we see you next onscreen? Lyndie Greenwood: Sleepy Hollow’s fourth season premieres Jan 6, 2017 on FOX! Ajouré: What are your plans for the future? Lyndie Greenwood: I just bought a house, and I plan on fixing it up. What Other People Think

How to Free Yourself from Caring

Some women spend time in the morning worrying what colleagues will think about a short skirt, while others don’t care at all and dress exactly how they want. People who don’t stress about what other people think can be more natural and enjoy life more fully. Letting go of these worries brings an incredible sensation of freedom. If only it was that easy to not care what other people think! Why do other people’s opinions even matter? Of course your best friend’s opinion is important. And your boyfriend’s, and your mom’s – on certain things, at least. What they think is important because they are important – they know you and can give you good advice. But is that guy at the office really so important? Does it really matter what the neighbors think? Who cares if they gossip about you! There’s no reason why their opinions should be so important to you.

Women who place a lot of value on what others think often suffer from low self-esteem. Even if they look extremely confident, internally they are constantly in doubt and don’t value themselves. This is the reason it affects them so much when others don’t approve – and boosts them excessively when others praise them. These women are dependent on the confirmation of others instead of realizing how valuable and perfect they are. Life by someone else’s rules? No thanks! What happens when you base your actions on the judgment of other people? Let’s face it – someone will always have something negative to say about you. These are people who don’t like you or don’t agree with your way of life. Most of the time they’re just jealous. So why do you care? You’re living by someone else’s rules! Maybe you’ve thought of going back to school for something totally different. What would your mom say? She probably wouldn’t be thrilled, but your fear of her opinion leaves you stuck in a job that makes you, not her, unhappy every day.

• Do you remember someone from school who always got what she wanted? Good grades, a boyfriend, the best vacations? Or are you someone who wins more often than she loses? This isn’t about coincidence – there’s a reason for success and achievements! There are enormous differences between people who win and lose in life. It’s the little things that make all the difference.

WINNERS PUT THEMSELVES TO THE TEST

In your high school class, or during lectures at the university, wasn’t there always a classmate who complained loudly when he failed a test? Of course, you felt bad for him. Losers, on the other hand, keep their obstacles to themselves and try to cope on their own, despite being totally overwhelmed and in desperate need of support. RESPONSIBILITY IS KEY

Every child has put the blame on someone else for a mistake. That, however, is exactly what is childish about it: not taking responsibility for one’s actions. Winners know when they are responsible HALF FULL, HALF EMPTY for something, and they acknowledge it, even if it has consequences. They know that the respect Okay, so you got a bad grade. A first good impression makes you seem friendly, strong, and self-confident. When casting for movies, film producers often rely on the halo effect. How to Sleep Better: Ten Evening Routines Are you an early bird, or a morning grouch? If you admire people who are full of energy and ready for action in the early hours of the day, you’ve probably also wondered where these people get their power from. One of the most basic tricks is a good night’s sleep. We know that adults need between six and eight hours of sleep, depending on your metabolism. But it’s not only getting enough hours of sleep – your energy levels are determined by how well you sleep. Here are ten evening activities that successful people to help them reach their full potential the next day and every day.

Take a Walk or Jog Don’t go out and run a half-marathon right before getting into bed, but taking a short walk in the evening or a light jog will help you process the day, reduce stress, and make you sleepy. Lots of high-level executives swear by this evening ritual.

Think Positive

Experts like Dale Kurow, a well-known executive manager in New York, recommend meditation. It’s the best way to relax your body and soothe your mind. But whatever helps you relax, do it. It can be a hot shower, a bath, or soft music – anything to help calm your body and leave the day’s worries behind. The National Institute of Health in Maryland confirms that alcohol before bed is counterproductive. Alcohol in your bloodstream makes it harder for your body to enter a deep sleep cycle. So go without that last glass of wine and make yourself tea.

Read Something You Enjoy High-performing people from Obama to Bill Gates know the recipe to success. According to studies, as little as six minutes of reading per evening help clear your

mind. Be careful what you choose to read, though. Avoid work documents or thrilling stories that will keep you up past your bedtime.

Smartphone Away Your smartphone is a source of activity and anxiety, and should be left far away from you in bed. Studies show that not only calls, messages or push notifications prevent relaxation: even the presence of your smartphone makes you more alert. Its bluish light and flashing LEDs prevent your body from falling into a deep sleep and keep you subconsciously at attention. You should consistently switch off all technology before going to sleep or switch your devices to airplane mode, remove them from reach, and leave the TV off in the evening.

When you take negative thoughts to bed with you, it makes falling sleep more difficult and reduces your chances of deep, restorative sleep. You are also more prone to nightmares. Try to put aside everything that was negative about the day, especially things you can’t change anymore. Try to focus on the positive. What pleasant or successful experiences did you have today? What are you looking forward to tomorrow? Feeling content about the day and hopeful about tomorrow is key to a night of deep, restful, sleep.

Sex! It has long been proven that sex, which produces good hormones, helps us fall asleep faster and more relaxed. Feeling satisfied with your sex life also ensures psychological well-being in the long term and lowers blood pressure, risk of heart attacts, and even strengthens the body’s immune system. Let’s leave it at that – grab your partner! All these tips can help you sleep more deeply and wake up with more energy. Most important is your long-term commitment to these routines: making them habits will soon prove that your daily performance, but also your sense of balance, both benefit from a solid night’s sleep.

According to Hollywood, sexy is more than appearance and wealth these days. Emma Watson, Julia Roberts, and Steven Spielberg are all focused on sustainability. Together they prove that the days when “eco-friendly” sounded silly are long gone. Sustainability and protecting the environment are lately becoming the fashionable norm. Since the beginning of humanity, what was important for survival has always been considered attractive and appealed to the opposite sex. In prehistory, a man was able to secure the survival of his family through physical strength. A large weapon acted as a status symbol and contributed to perceived attractiveness. With the disappearance of this type of daily struggle for survival, certain weapons and tools also disappeared. Other symbols and objects took their place. 1. The Fridge Is your fridge or freezer more than ten years old? These models are real power guzzlers. You should consider buying a new one. Because refrigerators are on 24 hours a day, the cost of a new appliance quickly pays for itself. Fridges account for about a quarter of a household’s total electricity consumption. An easy example: an old refrigerator in energy efficiency class D consumes up to 400 kWh per year more than a modern appliance in energy efficiency class A +++. This amounts to more than $100 in electricity costs per year. When purchasing a new fridge, pay attention to the energy efficiency class; A +++ is the best choice. These energy efficiency classes also apply to other household appliances like washing machines. Your refrigerator capacity shouldn’t be too large, either – 60 liters per person is plenty. The temperature of your fridge also shouldn’t be set too low. Forty-five degrees Fahrenheit is optimal for preserving food. Make sure to keep your fridge and freezer far from heat sources like ovens or heaters. When you go to open the fridge, think about what you need beforehand – the longer it’s open, the more power it consumes. Taking these factors into account will only save you about ten euros a year, but still: a penny saved is a penny earned.

Photos: juliapuig; George Manga / Getty Images

Refrigerators and freezers must be defrosted regularly if they don’t have a no-frost mechanism. For older models, this may have to be done up to two times a year. The thicker the ice layer inside the freezer, the more energy the fridge consumes – even an ice layer a quarter-inch thick can increase power consumption by up to thirty percent. 2. The Washing Machine Your washing machine is another household appliance responsible for a large portion of electricity costs. Especially in large families, washing machines are often used daily. They use the most energy for preheating water, which means you should choose a program with a cooler water temperature to save energy. If you wash your clothes regularly at 85 degrees Fahrenheit, you will reduce electricity consumed by two thirds and can save up to forty euros per year in electricity costs. Don’t worry: your laundry will still be clean.

3. Unplugging Appliances If you leave home for long periods of time, don’t forget to unplug all your electrical appliances. Make this a habit: if you regularly switch off five electrical appliances completely instead of leaving them in the stand-by mode, you can save up to 100 euros a year in electricity costs. The best option is to get a power strip, which will allow you to turn off all devices off with a single switch. Even more useful are master-slave power strips. As soon as the main unit (such as the computer or TV) is switched off, all other devices are will be switched off automatically. These powers strips cost as little as fifteen euros and can save up to 450 kWh a year. 4. The TV If you’re looking to buy a new TV, pay attention to the energy efficiency class. The larger the screen display size, the more power it uses. If the diagonal length is longer than 48 inches, the TV should be class A +++. TVs with plasma screens consume more power than TVs with LED background lighting. 5. Stoves and Ovens Are you someone who spends lots of time in your kitchen? Even while cooking, you can save valuable energy and thus get yourself some extra change. Gas ranges are slightly cheaper than electric ones. Make sure the lid you are using fits the pot correctly. Use the remaining heat from a cooking plate before firing up another one. Add only as much water to the pot as you truly need. You can save money by heating the water for the rice or pasta in the electric kettle. When baking or using the oven, use the circulating fan function to save about thirty percent of energy. 6. Laptop over Desktop Most of us would rather sit comfortably on the couch in front of the laptop than in front of a desktop computer. This is good news for power consumption: a normal computer consumes about 200 kWh, while a portable device uses only about 30 kWh. Your piggy bank will thank you. 7. Lights This one should be obvious – only turn on lights when you need them. Electric light bulbs can be replaced with energy-saving lamps. A two-person household, for example, can save up to 270 kWh a year by using high-quality energy-saving lamps. In the darker autumn and winter months, candlelight can also be very romantic!

x Attractive, Successful, Alone

Gorgeous, but Single Is there a girl in your circle of acquaintances who is amazingly attractive and yet still single? Or are you the one who’s been looking for Mr. Right for a long time with no luck? The likelihood that you fall into one of these two categories is high, as an increasing number of beautiful and smart women go through life single. Despite wanting to be in a relationship, these women somehow can’t seem to find the right partner. Why do beautiful women have a harder time finding a match? Or are they just making it hard on themselves?

If in addition to being physically attractive, a woman also has a successful career, it makes things even more complicated. Lots of men still have trouble with the idea of a partner earning more than they do. If you are both attractive and successful in the professional world, you are sure to have a harder time finding a mate. Birds of a Feather Flock Together

GHOSTING: When Men Go

He’s gone. You went on a few dates, had a wonderful time together, and in your opinion, your conversations were amazing. And then, with no warning, he’s fallen off the planet. AWOL

AJOURE / LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS

What is Ghosting? Ghosting is when the guy you’re dating or someone you’re interested just isn’t interested in you. Instead of making the effort to openly communicate this, a ghost just disappears without giving any explanation, hoping the other person will “take the hint.” He doesn’t even make the effort to write a short, concise text to let you know, and there’s no way to get in touch with him to ask what happened or clarify things. Ghosting is most common when normal friendship becomes something more or at the beginning of a relationship. This doesn’t mean that the guy in question will never reappear. But don’t hold your breath.

Why Does Ghosting Happen? In general, ghosting shows serious conflict-aversion. He is too afraid to tell you directly that he isn’t interested in taking things further or continuing to see you. It’s not because you’re unattractive or uninteresting. It might just be that he has a feeling you don’t really fit. No matter how understandable the reason, he just can’t say it. What’s more, he obviously has communication problems. Of course, this type of conversation isn’t fun for anyone. And for him, this effort conflicts with the image of a harmonious, stress-free relationship that many men idealize. He’s guessing you’ll read between the lines and realize that “no answer is an answer,” no matter how confused you are guessing the reasons. He doesn’t feel like he owes it to you. Of course, the fact that you went on two dates and had a really great time doesn’t make you a couple. Maybe he’s assuming you’re interested in a serious relationship right away. He might feel pressure to get out instead of talking to you about it. The rapid, revolving door of online dating might also play a role here. He might already be on to his next Tinder interest.

So He’s Gone. How Do You React First of all, determine whether you’re actually being ghosted. A complete lack of communication definitely sounds like ghosting – but don’t lose hope just yet. Taking a day to answer a message doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re being ghosted. It could also just be that he has his hands full. Remember not to bombard him with messages. Most guys enjoy the opportunity to get in contact with you on their own initiative. If you don’t hear from him at all within four or five days, it’s likely he won’t be contacting you again soon.

Forget Him and Don‘t Take it Personally Sure, it’s a blow to your feelings when someone treats you so unfairly. Take your time processing it and letting it go. Always remember, though, that someone who can’t face a conflict or confrontation is not real partner material.

How to Deal In the Future Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee you won’t be ghosted again. But don’t worry: not all men are this immature. If you hear that a guy has ghosted women, take note and stay clear of him. As long as you stay honest with yourself and anyone you might be dating, things will work out just fine.

HOW TO

DEAL WITH VAGINAL ODORS Every woman knows that vaginas don’t smell the same every day, and most women find their own vaginal odor unpleasant. What determines vaginal odor and how can it be kept under control? EAT THE RIGHT FOODS Just like how men’s sperm makeup varies based on diet, certain foods also affect vaginal smell. Eating onions and garlic, which are normally associated with bad breath, also change vaginal odor. Your sweat will also smell differently, including sweat in your crotch area. To eliminate strong vaginal odors, eat pineapples or blueberries and lots of fruit in general.

SAY GOODBYE TO GUILTY PLEASURES Nicotine and alcohol get into the bloodstream quickly and will negatively affect vaginal odor. You’ve probably heard that beer makes sperm taste bitter – the same goes for us women. If you can’t live without it, then consume in moderation. For the best smell results, eliminate nicotine and alcohol completely.

USE THE RIGHT CARE PRODUCTS

HYGIENE Bathing too infrequently can cause infections, while bathing too often will mess up your vaginal pH. Wash yourself once a day, either evening or morning. Washing several times a day or using vaginal deodorants can be excessive and unhealthy.

VAGINAL HEALTH If bacteria have built up or you have any sort of vaginal infection, you’ll notice a strong odor and increased discharge. This could be a bacterial vaginosis or mycosis. You’ll need medication for both, which your doctor can prescribe or you can sometimes purchase over the counter. In order to prevent these infections, you can use a product to maintain vaginal pH that contains lactic acid. Every woman can make a little effort to keep her vagina healthy and smelling good. As a general rule, anything you eat that will give you bad breath will also affect your vaginal smell. Eating healthy, staying clean, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will all contribute to your vaginal balance and health.

Your vaginal flora are very sensitive, so you should always wash with a mild special soap designed for intimate areas. Never use regular shower gel or soap. These can upset natural vaginal pH and lead to unpleasant smells. If the pH is out of balance, you’ll notice a fishy odor and unpleasant discharge. If this happens, pay a visit to your doctor. Look for specially developed care products that protect vaginal flora and can be used on a daily basis.

Boredom out of

* How to Break a Bad Eating Habit Maybe you’ve experienced an irresistible craving for something sweet right when you can’t think of anything else to do. This snacking impulse strikes healthy and unhealthy eaters alike. While some women grab gummy bears or chocolate chips, others reach for fruit, cheese, or yogurt. Even if it means healthy snacking, the underlying problem is the same. Eating out of boredom isn’t good for our health or our hips. By the time we notice those two or three extra pounds on the scale, it’s already too late. Below is some helpful advice to help break the bored snacking fix.

AJOURE MAGAZINE PAGE:

WINTER

2016/2017

* Why Do We Eat out of Boredom, Anyway? Even if we’re completely focused on healthy eating with no snacking between meals, every now and again, we slip. At a commercial break, a quick trip to the fridge or cupboard is almost automatic. Or on a long trip by train or car, the lure of stashed candy is almost impossible to resist. The reason is simply a lack of mental activity. Whenever we don’t know what to do with ourselves, food provides a quick distraction.

AJOURE / FITNESS & FOOD

Cravings A commercial break on TV, for example, isn’t long enough to start any real activity, but isn’t short enough to avoid feeling restless. Most of the time, it’s just long enough to head to the fridge for one of those fruit yogurts. Unfortunately for us, all these little treats make for an unpleasant surprise on the scale.

It’s not too late to break these eating habits. Think about some alternatives that keep you occupied and also give a sense of fulfillment. Put together a small list of things you really enjoy with no later grief involved. This might be an exciting book, taking a walk downtown with friends, or listening to your favorite music.

* Preparation is Everything!

This sense of fulfillment can also come from taking a few minutes to write to friends or family. A short note or letter gives you something to do, communicates your affection, and will be appreciated by your loved ones. Any kind of creative pursuit can help you break your unhealthy eating habits, be it writing, painting, or playing an instrument.

Photos: Andrew Rich; David Crespo; Wonyeop & Hyerim / Getty Images

The main way to break this habit is by asking ourselves a few important questions. First, use a little book to document your eating habits. You’ll soon realize just how often you snack. For every entry in your book, ask yourself whether you were bored at the time. What type of situation made you feel bored? Be completely honest with yourself when answering these questions. Were you actually hungry, or did you just grab a snack to pass the time? Ask yourself whether there was another way to banish the boredom. Write down alternatives that you might not have thought of. This will help you be more prepared next time. The last question is the most important of all: would you have felt better if you hadn’t snacked out of boredom?

* Find out What Makes You Feel Good! Most of us learned as kids that candy can be a source of comfort or a reward for a job well done. This habit gets only more ingrained in adulthood. Be clear with yourself that this moment of bliss is only temporary. Frustration over weight gain cancels out any short-lived enjoyment.

If you prefer to experience art made by others, take a trip to a theater or museum. Almost every city regularly hosts operas and musicals. Keep an eye out for the cultural offerings in your area. Last but not least, develop your talent for languages. Especially if you would like to travel to another country, learning the local language in advance gives a gratifying sense of preparation. Learning material is readily available online to bring your dream destination one step closer. Next time you replace a trip to the fridge with a book or another interesting, more fulfilling pursuit, your body (and mind) will thank you.

Dangerous Foods Eating is complicated. Lots of foods are obviously unhealthy, while others hide their unhealthiness by presenting themselves as balanced and nutritious. In addition, companies advertize their products by highlighting their benefits without mentioning potentially unhealthy ingredients. We thought it might be interesting to look at a list of foods that nutritionists themselves avoid. A truly balanced diet is only possible with products and nutrients that provide energy, vitamins, and minerals.

An often-repeated misconception is that the brain needs sugar to work at full speed. This is false! We need carbohydrates, too, which can be divided into good and bad. Good carbs provide important nutrients, while bad carbs are made up of pure sugar that has negative effects on the brain and body. Another common rumor is that carbohydrates are always bad and protein is more useful for the body. Protein is mainly used for muscle building and burning energy. In order to build muscle, your body needs protein; however, if a diet becomes too protein-heavy, there can also be negative consequences. The same applies to fats, which are generally regarded as harmful. Consuming unsaturated fats in appropriate amounts has positive effects on the body, and a lack of them will have negative effects. NEW WAYS TO GET YOURSELF EXERCISING Regular exercise is essential for long-term health and a lean, fit body. the motivation to get ourselves to the gym. Here we collected ten new Movement puts us in a good mood, keeps our metabolisms in balance, tricks to give us the workout motivation we need. and boosts our immune systems. There are hundreds of reasons we should exercise daily, and we all know them. Yet still, we rarely find

1

Giving up is allowed.

You gave up running years ago, biking is just not your thing, and that step aerobics class felt just as ridiculous as Zumba and Pilates? That’s fine! Now you just have to find a type of exercise you like. Learn to play lacrosse, in-line skate, rock-climb, or try to beat the neighbor’s German Shepherd in a sprint. No matter what: make sure it’s fun. When it stops being fun, you can stop, but only on the condition that you look for something new right away.

2

Keep your commitments.

If you easily find excuses to avoid making it to the gym after work, there’s more reason than ever to schedule workouts right now, today. It’s now or never – if you can’t meet your commitments and fulfill your scheduled appointments, you will never find the time for your fitness and health.

Head to the gym straight after work.

You get home, pack your gym clothes, but then decide to have a quick snack. All of a sudden, the temptation to just stay home overpowers the motivation to get out the door again. To avoid this, take your workout clothes and everything else you need with you to work and then head directly to the gym afterward. Without the home detour, you’ll avoid the dangerous temptation to call it a day.

Reward yourself with new workout gear.

Do you need new exercise clothes, shoes, or another piece of workout equipment? Then earn it! Wait to give yourself these presents until you’ve achieved specific exercise goals. Order the equipment that you need and really want, even if it seems a little bit expensive. Have it delivered to your fitness trainer or a friend who will only hand over the goods after a specific exercise goal has been reached.

Wine after water.

Alcohol and exercise don’t mix well, that much is clear. You should only allow yourself an evening drink with your girlfriends if you’ve done a decent workout beforehand. Until then, the bar is closed. Your local pub might even help hold you to your promise if you ask for their support.

Sleep in your workout clothes.

Photo: Tara Moore / Getty Images

Clean ones, we mean. It’s simple psychology: you wake up in the morning and are ready for a sporty day right away. Try working out before work instead of after – this way you arrive at the office with higher energy levels and in a good mood.

Leave your bikini in a visible place.

Don’t hide it – show it off! When you bury your tiniest clothing items deep in the closet, it’s hard to remember exactly why you need to exercise. Bring them back into the open where they’ll be in your face every day. This will remind you how much you want that beach body.

8 9

Use embarrassing photos from Facebook for motivation.

In addition to the skimpy bikini or skintight dress, you should keep an unflattering photo of yourself from Facebook in a visible place. Yes, that was embarrassing, but it won’t happen again – thanks to your current workouts, from now on you’ll always look amazing.

Throw out your workout schedule.

Is it demoralizing to look at a workout schedule full of different types of exercise and timetables? We feel you. That’s because it looks like a huge mountain of work to be finished. Here some advice: throw that out and just do a small amount of exercise. An unplanned fiveminute workout is better than an hour staring at a workout plan you don’t want to do. Five minutes also easily turn into six, seven, eight, even ten or twenty minutes. Every minute of movement is better than no movement at all. Just get started.

10

Use technology to help you exercise.

Do you like to dance to your favorite music while cooking? Awesome: buy Bluetooth headphones, load a playlist on your cellphone and get exercising! Do you like to surf YouTube on your computer? Find yourself motivating videos related to exercise. Before bed, grab an athlete’s biography instead of a fashion magazine. Use your smartphone keep an online fitness journal.

For other times of the day, however, you need more energy, like when exercising, at work, or walking around the city. For these times, advertising will try to convince you to grab artificially produced sports bars. These snacks, which definitely contribute to increased performance, are expensive and more often than not, tasteless. Vitamin B Dates are high in vitamin B3 and vitamin B5. B vitamins are extremely good for blood pressure, as well as stress levels. Before a sense of overwhelm leads you to the gummy bear bag or out for a cigarette, grab a date for a healthier alternative. Tryptophan Tryptophan is a hormone that converts into melatonin in your body and helps you sleep better, more calmly, and wake up refreshed. What better way to start your day?

Soluble Fiber A perfect meal is usually finished off with a delicious dessert or liqueur. With a few dates, you’ll hit both birds with one stone. Dates will curb dessert cravings and also help digestion. They contain soluble fibers, which balance intestines and protect against colon cancer and hemorrhoids.

Because dates are rich in nutrients your body needs, three fruits per day is an appropriate amount to reap the benefits to your health and well-being. You don’t have to make big changes to your daily eating routine. Simply add a few of these sweet health snacks to your dessert. Or, even better: leave the sweets out entirely, and go just with the dates.

Mix the figs, dates, and plums, the squeezed juice from the orange, and the applesauce and let sit for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees. Halve the pecans and then mix the remaining ingredients until the dough has a thick consistency. Place the dough in a greased bread pan and press firmly inside. Bake for approximately 50 minutes, making sure the bread is still moist. Leave the bread to cool ten minutes in the pan and remove. When the bread is chilled, wrapping it in aluminum foil will help it retain moisture for several days.

HOW TO HAVE AN UNFORGETTABLE STAYCATION Not everyone likes to travel to foreign countries or faraway places during vacation weeks or months. Sometimes money is tight, no one is available as a travel buddy, or no destination sounds tempting enough. How often do you truly enjoy the comfort of your very own home? A vacation at home right on your balcony can turn out to be just as wonderful as any long-distance journey. Don’t you sleep better in your own bed, anyway?

PLAN ACTIVITIES YOU ENJOY

1

LEAVE WORK AT WORK Most of us find this to be a no-brainer. But when at home on a staycation, it’s all too easy to check work emails and take calls. Some colleagues might even take advantage of your proximity to contact you about work. To avoid this, always communicate clearly that you will not be reachable on holidays, no matter where. At home, you may find it harder to disconnect because no foreign culture or sites are waiting outside your door. But hold your ground – turn your phone off and don’t check emails.

2

If you decide to spend your holiday at home, don’t let the days slip away from you. Doing this will bring you to the end of your vacation feeling low-energy and dissatisfied. Make a list of things you plan to do. Maybe visiting a spa, getting a manicure and pedicure, or even a relaxing massage. Your city might have a new museum or exhibition that you normally wouldn’t be able to visit. Use your vacation time for things like this.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VACATION TIME TO TRY SOMETHING NEW

Photo: Double AleksandarNakic; milos-kreckovic / iStock Photo; Newmann; BraunS; Matin Bahadori / Getty Images

If you traveled to a foreign country, you would encounter new cultures and unknown places and people. Why not try experience something new in your own city? It could be something like a new culinary experience. Most cities have lots of restaurants offering global cuisine where you can try African, Brazilian, or Middle Eastern food. Sometimes there is live music to make the meal more of an experience. You can also take this a step further. Why not you use this opportunity to try skydiving like you’ve always wanted?

3

4 EXPLORE YOUR SURROUNDINGS In our routine lives, we also often forget to enjoy the surroundings. The United States has an incredible number of national parks to explore. Take a hike, get to the nearest river or body of water, or check out the closest location for winter sports. These natural attractions often go unnoticed. You can also try to get out of your comfort zone culturally. What cities are near you and what do they have to offer? Have you ever visited the theater? Keep your eyes open for new, unknown possibilities.

5 SPORTS AND FITNESS Working out is one thing we often neglect in our everyday lives. For someone with an office job, staying active is extremely important, and very few of us can keep it up regularly. If you’re on vacation at home, try to use the extra time return to a more regular fitness plan. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to head to the gym. It could be something new: a bike ride, a visit to the rock-climbing park, or an hour of yoga. You might even discover a new hobby.

"Home is where your Wifi connects automatically."

6

THINGS TO AVOID ON YOUR STAYCATION Though it’s tempting, there are things you should avoid on your vacation time. For example: do not use this time to deep-clean your apartment. Though some people find this liberating, most of us find it annoying and exhausting. Think carefully if you feel the urge to use your well-earned vacation for something like fixing the broken washing machine, paying invoices, or doing the annual tax returns. Stick to the motto: only do it as long as you are still having fun.
