uerto Rico and Mexico have been protagonists in the decades-long migration to the United States, with a strong cultural impact. In Philadelphia we have El Taller Puertorriqueño, whose goal is “the preservation, promotion and cultural resistance of the Puerto Rican community”, according to fashion designer Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González, who will assume the executive direction of the organization on December 27. She replaced Carmen Febo San Miguel, who for 22 years was in charge of el Taller and made it a cultural reference in the region. Our cover story takes a journey through the life of Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González and the challenges of her new responsibility. In the culture section, you’ll find the story of Mexican-American indigenous singer Flores, who recently released “Mayahuel”, a single that bears the name of a debut project that had to be postponed due to the pandemic, is also told. Flores recalls that the name is that of a female deity from Aztec mythology. And, of course, the story reveals details of her life, her origins, the weight of her cultural roots. She grew up in the Tigua Indigenous Reserve, in the Chihuahuan desert, on the border of the United States and Mexico. On other pages you’ll find an analysis of what happened in the elections in Virginia and the implications and concerns for the Democrats and the Biden government, forecasting what is to come in 2022. En Filadelfia funciona el Taller Puertorriqueño, desde donde se busca “la preservación, promoción y resistencia cultural de la comunidad puertorriqueña”. Así lo expresa por Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González, diseñadora de moda, quien asumirá el 27 de diciembre la dirección ejecutiva de la organización. Reemplaza a Carmen Febo San Miguel, quien por 22 años estuvo al frente del Taller y lo convirtió en referente cultural de la región. En ese reportaje encontrará un recorrido por la vida de Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González y los retos en esta nueva responsabilidad. En lo cultural también se cuenta la historia de Flores, la cantante indígena mexicano-estadounidense y de su más reciente producción, “Mayahuel”, un sencillo que a su vez lleva el nombre de un proyecto debut que debió aplazar por la pandemia. he spring and summer of 2020 was a time of distress, civil unrest and various calls for social justice. From the murder of George Floyd to the growing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals and communities alike were scrambling for answers. If you were to ask Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, to pinpoint a single bright spot of that moment in time, it’s that it made the disparities that have long existed in our society more evident to many. “It opened up the eyes of a lot of people saying ‘this has got to change, and we should be doing more,’” said Dimon in a sit-down interview with AL DÍA. While many corporations nationwide began taking a more focused approach towards addressing racial disparities in the past year, JP Morgan Chase has been addressing those issues for years. JPMorgan Chase has launched two initiatives — Advancing Black Leaders and Advancing Black Pathways — to address racial equity for both its Black corporate executives, as well as the Black community in the communities it serves. Advancing Black Leaders initiative is a diversity strategy initiative aimed at attracting, hiring, retaining and advancing top talent within the Black community, while Advancing Black Pathways is an initiative that builds on existing efforts toward economic success and empowerment.

ENGLISH Dimon noted that internally, Black leaders in executive director and managing director positions at JP Morgan Chase have increased 50% since those initiatives launched in 2016 and 2019, respectively. He further noted that any efforts being made to address disparities need to be long-term, sustained, and approached from both an individual and company-wide perspective.
A $30 BILLION EFFORT
In October 2020, JPMorgan Chase announced a new $30 billion commitment over five years to advance racial equity. The commitment includes public policy efforts toward addressing key drivers of the racial wealth divide, reducing systemic racism against Black and Latinx communities and supporting its employees. The breakdown of the $30 billion is: • $8 billion in mortgages and 40,000 home purchase loans for Black and Latinx households. • $4 billion in refinancing loans to help 20,000 Black and Latinx households achieve lower mortgage payments. • $14 billion in new loans for 100,000 affordable rental units. • $2 billion in loans to 15,000 small businesses in majority-Black and Latinx-communities. • $750 million to Black and Latinx suppliers. • $50 million in the form of capital and deposits in Black and Latinx-led Minority Depository Institutions

lection Day 2021 was an early litmus test for the Biden administration and controlling Democratic Party ahead of what will be a real referendum during the 2022 midterm elections. In short, if 2021 was an early indicator, the Biden administration needs to seriously reconsider how it’s gone (or not gone) about its business getting its Build Back Better agenda off the ground. For one, both key pieces of the package — a sweeping infrastructure bill and budget reconciliation — remain stagnant as opposite ends of the Democratic Party spar over how much it is willing to spend on the transformative social packages that will be part of the bills. Don’t look now, but by the time the bills actually pass, what voters were sold about those transformative policies may actually not be as grand. But beyond the transformative capacity of the bills, what’s been most frustrating about the process is the wait. Negotiations over infrastructure and reconciliation have taken months, and combined with the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal, it

Republican candidates practically swept the field on the national stage. In Virginia’s gubernatorial race — the most-watched in the lead up to Election Day — Republican challenger and businessman Glenn Youngkin handily beat Democrat Terry McAuliffe. The former struck the perfect balance between appeasing the Trump wing of the Republican Party by speaking out against things like Critical Race Theory, while appealing to pre-Trump party ideals like government efficiency and lowering taxes.

On the night of Tuesday, Nov. 2, Ciattarelli had a commanding lead over Murphy, but as time wore on and more
early ballots were tallied, Murphy gained ground and had eked out a small winning margin by the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 3. It continued to grow, but not by much, just enough to give Murphy the first victory for a New Jersey governor of the same party as the president in 40 years. The only other national victory to point out on the Democratic side of things was that of Shontel Brown, who won HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge’s old seat in Ohio. She beat progressive Democrat Nina Turner in the primaries.

n an op-ed published on Saturday, Oct. 30 in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Councilmember Maria Quiñones-Sánchez revealed that she has been privately dealing with breast cancer for the past four months. Quiñones-Sánchez knew before going into her mammogram that she had a small lump on her breast, but because it wasn’t painful, she put off the appointment. This was a decision she later regretted when a biopsy confirmed the cancer diagnosis. In August, Quiñones-Sánchez chose to have a mastectomy of her left breast, in hopes of avoiding chemotherapy and radiation. But her doctor informed her that in order to prevent future illness, the treatment plan would have to be more aggressive.

ENGLISH Despite the challenge, Quiñones-Sánchez was determined to maintain her work schedule. Three days after having her breast removed, she was in a Zoom meeting with staff. Quiñones-Sánchez is currently in remission, but is undergoing chemotherapy at Penn Medicine, and is expected to begin preventive radiation in a few weeks. In the op-ed, Quiñones-Sánchez reflected on the blessing of living in Philadelphia, where the medical care she received was high quality. “My doctors tell me that by February, this entire experience may be in the rearview mirror. I feel lucky that even though I put off my mammogram, the cancer was caught early enough to be treated. I know this is not the case for everyone,” she wrote.

At first, Quiñones-Sánchez wanted to stay silent about her diagnosis until her treatment was complete in December. But when she got a short haircut — in preparation for the wig she would have to wear after losing her hair — people had a lot to say about it. “If people had so many opinions about my hair, what would they think of this? It scared me to expose something so personal about myself. Until recently, the only people who knew were my husband, mother, children, and sister-in-law,” Quiñones-Sánchez wrote. Throughout October, which was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Quiñones-Sánchez heard from many women speaking about their journeys in fighting cancer. She also thought about the women she knew personally who have lost their battles with the disease, including her sister-in-law and a family friend. This is ultimately what prompted her to share her story. “I have always prided myself on being authentic and accessible. The more I listened to these other brave women talk, the guiltier I felt about not being honest about my own experiences,” Quiñones-Sánchez wrote.
A CALL TO GET SCREENED
Throughout her experience, Quiñones-Sánchez had Black and Latina women in mind. While Black women are just as likely as white women to be diagnosed with breast cancer, Black women are almost 40% more likely to die from the disease. Additionally, research published in the medical journal Cancer Control,

Al principio, Quiñones-Sánchez quiso guardar silencio sobre su diagnóstico hasta completar su tratamiento, en diciembre. n Oct. 13, 2021, fashion designer Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González was announced as the new executive director of Taller Puertorriqueño, Pennsylvania’s largest Puerto Rican and Latinx art organization. She is now the head designer of her own brand, Nasheli Juliana, an apparel company focused on social justice, and the co-founder and principal of 22 Studio, a women-led transdisciplinary design practice operating in Puerto Rico and the mainland U.S. Her work has been showcased in Paris, London, New York, and Miami Fashion Weeks and featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ, and Forbes, among other publications. All of her collections have a deeper message and an educational perspective. She loves to take advantage of the power that fashion has in shaping the minds of people. Her collections have either a historical, political, or social investigation behind them. “Each of my collections has a message and educational perspective. I am obsessed with the power that fashion has in people,” said Ortiz-González.

She was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico and often weaves her heritage into her work, saying that the persistent quest for social justice is derived from the generational trauma of colonization on the island. “Living as a second-class citizen such as that of Puerto Ricans, woman, queer, mother, is a list that continues to add capable of social judgment and therefore an incredible weight to get out of situations of poverty, educational, cultural, economic and social list goes on. The common thread of my collections is the search for that justice that we all deserve, without buts,” Ortiz-González told AL DÍA. The talented fashion designer first stumbled upon her craft as a form of physical therapy. She had meningitis at age two, and her mother immersed her into painting, music and dance to develop motor skills.

Before her mother threw her into all these activities, doctors thought that she would never be able to walk or talk. By middle school, she not only proved the doctors wrong, but Ortiz-González was also able to design clothes for her barbie dolls. When it was time to choose a high school, her mother enrolled her in a vocational school called the Clothing Design Workshop. Ortiz-González wasn’t happy with the decision, but quickly realized sewing as her lifelong passion after successfully completing her first piece of clothing. It was a moment where everything just made sense. She considered herself a seamstress until she studied at The Savannah College of Art and Design, where she received her Master’s Degree in fashion design. “The professors changed my life; they supported me emotionally and financially, above all they believed in my talent. That’s where Nasheli Juliana, the brand, was born,” Ortiz-González said.
FASHION AS SOCIETY
Ortiz-González’s website reads: “Fashion is the reflection of society,” and that is evident in her work, which mainly focuses on feminism, her Boricua identity, and sustainable, slow fashion. “I use the clothes as a protest conductor in the catwalk space, which is very privileged and elitist. Each seam is thought in service of the concept presented,” she said. Research is a vital part of her creative techniques and methods, and sometimes this research can take years to complete. “Research is fundamental in my process, understanding and justifying each element, every decision in the pieces, understanding the social context, and the codification in the visual communication elements selected. The connection with the viewer and leading them to interact in an active way with the piece, and the narrative,” she said. Each of Ortiz-González’s collections are unique and she loves them all equally for different reasons. There’s Architettura morta, her thesis collection, which made it to the United States and was paid for by her professor, Patti Cappalli, so she could finish her master’s degree.

Following collections, such as Suora and Stranded, took her across the Atlantic. “Suora took me to London Fashion Week and it was a challenge in the making. But Stranded took me to Paris Fashion Week, the subject that has been the one that I have felt closest to my heart,” Ortiz-González said. Suora, which means ‘sister’ in Italian, was a modern reinterpretation of the traditional uniform of the Loretto Sisters, a group of nuns that engage in human rights movements. The Loretto Sisters “work for just and act for peace because the Gospel urges” them. Suora won Ortiz-González an International Design Award for Emerging Fashion Designer of the Year. Stranded made its debut at Paris Fashion Week in October 2018, and was the result of three years of research and work. The designs featured in the collection include photos of different scenes from Puerto Rico’s political and economic hardships since it became a U.S. colony in 1896. “There are eight atrocities committed by the United States against Puerto Rico. The silhouettes are inspired by the trends of the time, but the patterns tell the injustice, but to see them clearly, you need to use 3D glasses. Those glasses represent the distance, but also the Puerto Rican quote: ‘No one knows what is in the pot other than the spoon that shakes it,’” Ortiz-González said. In February 2020, Ortiz-González was featured on the popular Netflix competition show Next in Fashion. She didn’t

make it very far, but was able to network with a group of designers from various backgrounds and broadened her horizons as an artist. “It was an enriching experience, I met amazing people, designers and understood that commercial fashion and fast fashion are not my thing, and I am happy with that realization,” she said. At the time, Ortiz-González was a teacher in the fashion department at Moore College, an all women’s college for art and design. Many of her students were first-generation and part of marginalized groups that don’t typically see themselves represented in the fashion and design industry. But her participation in the show, which was shown on the world’s largest streaming platform, was impactful for her students, who watched a screening of Next in Fashion at the college.
TALLER’S CULTURAL RESISTANCE
Ortiz-González’s next collection is going to be an offering and tribute to all the women in her life, to honor all the “wise” women who raised and supported her throughout her life. “I have found a healing force in the process of loving my partner, my friends, my students, my mother and seeing it as a reflection of self-love,” she said. Ortiz-González is very excited to be the newest leader of Taller Puertorriqueño, as it was the first place she looked for when she arrived in Philadelphia in 2017. Much like her predecessor, the center was a home away from home and one she gravitated towards for its cultural significance to the city and region. “I had heard so many stories from Carmen Febo San Miguel and Taller’s mission. It is an honor that carries great responsibility for the sustainability of the Puerto Rican community, a great symbol of cultural resistance that is necessary to select the path of our country from an informed place,” she said. San Miguel announced her retirement from leading Taller in March, after 22 years at the helm of the organization, and growing it into a regional cultural powerhouse. Cuando llegó el momento de elegir una escuela secundaria, su madre la inscribió en una vocacional llamada Taller de Diseño de Ropa. Ortiz-González no estaba contenta con la decisión. Sin embargo, después de completar con éxito su primera prenda de vestir rápidamente se dio cuenta de que la costura era su pasión para toda la vida. En ese momento, todo pareció cobrar sentido. Se consideró costurera hasta que estudió en The Savannah College of Art and Design, donde recibió su maestría en diseño de moda. “Los profesores cambiaron mi vida; me apoyaron emocional y económicamente, sobre todo creyeron en mi talento. Ahí es donde nació Nasheli Juliana, la marca”, dijo Ortiz-González.

Las siguientes colecciones, como Suora y Stranded, la llevaron al otro lado del Atlántico. “Suora me llevó a la Semana de la Moda de Londres y fue un desafío desde el principio. Pero Stranded me llevó a la Semana de la Moda de París y fue la que más sentí en mi corazón ”, contó. Suora, que significa “hermana” en italiano, fue una reinterpretación moderna del uniforme tradicional de las Hermanas de Loreto, un grupo de monjas que participan en movimientos de derechos humanos. Las Hermanas de Loreto “trabajan por la justicia y actúan por la paz, porque es lo que el Evangelio urge”, explicó la diseñadora, que gracias a Suora logró un Premio Internacional de Diseño al Diseñador de Moda Emergente del Año. Por su parte, Stranded hizo su debut en la Semana de la Moda de París en octubre de 2018 y fue el resultado de tres años de investigación y trabajo. Los diseños que aparecen en la colección incluyen fotos de diferentes escenas representativas de las dificultades políticas y económicas de Puerto Rico desde que se convirtió en colonia estadounidense, en 1896. “Hay ocho atrocidades cometidas por Estados Unidos contra Puerto Rico. Las siluetas están inspiradas en las tendencias de la época, pero los patrones hablan de la injusticia, aunque para verlos con claridad es necesario utilizar gafas 3D. Esas gafas representan la distancia, pero también el siguiente dicho puertorriqueño: ‘Nadie sabe lo que hay en la olla, más que la cuchara que la menea’”, añadió Ortiz-González. En febrero de 2020, apareció en Next in Fashion, el popular concurso de Netflix.

PORTADA No llegó muy lejos, pero pudo relacionarse con un grupo de diseñadores de diversos orígenes y amplió sus horizontes como artista. “Fue una experiencia enriquecedora, conocí gente increíble, diseñadores, y entendí que la moda comercial y la moda rápida no son lo mío, y estoy feliz con eso”, aseguró. En ese momento, Ortiz-González era maestra en el departamento de moda en Moore College, una escuela de arte y diseño para mujeres. Muchos de sus alumnos eran de primera generación y formaban parte de grupos marginados que normalmente no se ven representados en la industria de la moda y el diseño. Pero su participación en el concurso, proyectado en la plataforma de streaming más grande del mundo, fue impactante para sus estudiantes, al ver un episodio de Next in Fashion que pasaba en su universidad.
“Había escuchado muchas historias de Carmen Febo San Miguel y la misión de Taller. Es un honor que conlleva una gran responsabilidad para la sostenibilidad de la comunidad puertorriqueña, un gran símbolo de resistencia cultural que es necesario para seleccionar el camino de nuestro país desde un lugar informado”, dijo. While I was relaxing, a guide came to the store with a group of tourists to whom he would show the historical points of this neighborhood. Map in hand, he told travelers that precisely in these streets had been forged a good part of the emancipatory movement that would culminate with the independence of Cartagena on November 11, 1811. First, he pointed to the Plaza de la Trinidad, a place that, as now, was the meeting point of neighbors and artisans, among whom were men like Pedro Romero, the Gutiérrez de Piñeres brothers and Father Umaña, important figures of emancipation, who discussed there the political ideas of the time and their independence wishes. s a singer of Indigenous Mexican-American descent, Flores’ heritage had major influence over the songwriting of her latest single, “Mayahuel.” “Mayahuel” was released with a music video influenced by stories of violence against women near Flores’ hometown. It was particularly framed around a story depicted in short film concerning a sex worker in Mexico with an unintentional pregnancy. She is now readying for the release of a debut project of the same name, Mayahuel, a production she originally planned for a 2020 release before plans were changed.

ENGLISH The project’s themes of immigration, cultural identity, colonization, and gender roles, however, have remained intact. Mayahuel is the name of a female deity within Aztec mythology. Flores chose the name for her lead single and album as homage to the female deities of her Indigenous ancestors.

Flores se está preparando para el lanzamiento de un proyecto debut con el mismo nombre, ‘Mayahuel’, una producción que

ENGLISH Flores believes growing up on a Tigua reservation carried different nuances and experiences from those of city residents. This is due in-part to American treatment and neglect of people in Mexico and South America along the border. “The border… divides nations… That is the reason why it’s so important to me to publicly identify this way,” said Flores. “I feel like we’re left out of the conversation.” Born into a family of farm workers, braceros and silver miners, Flores’ family was subjected to an era of discriminatory Juan Crow laws, inhumane labor and immigration practices. Flores’ mother was an activist and leader in the “Ni Una Mas” movement, and a single parent who pushed against violence towards women.
POLITICAL AND FEMININE POWER
Raised by matriarchs, representation of women is an important aspect of Flores’ music. Her songwriting takes into consideration violence against women and female empowerment. By incorporating elements of certain folklore, Flores was able to write potent meditations on justice for women affected by violence through the lens of specific deities. “Regarding violence against women in our culture, I felt a little angry... that’s what made me try to write from that perspective of retribution and vengeance,” she said. Flores was also the youngest of five sisters in a household that appreciated music. Artists such as Chavela Vargas, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, and Paquita

La Del Barrio could be heard playing in Flores’ household each morning during her younger years. As Flores herself began exploring her musical interests, the artist gravitated towards the classic and groundbreaking 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill’s seminal record would become a soundtrack of sorts for the singer, in addition to Rage Against the Machine albums borrowed from her sisters. These albums would develop a deeper appreciation of lyrics that employ themes of political expression. Flores wrote “Mayahuel” at the end of 2018. The single was always meant to lead, but as time progressed, the perspectives grew to represent something more. “The Trump administration had become incredibly hostile for people in my family, for people on the border,” said Flores. “I felt like it was incredibly important, because I’m Mexican-American, and my existence is political, that I had to... for myself and other artists… reflect the time.” Flores had plans for a 2020 release of her debut project, but like many musicians for nearly the past two-years, plans were derailed. After the change of plans, what matters is that the project will be released soon, when the time is right. Flores hopes the finished project reaches audiences and evokes emotion. “I hope it resonates with people who identify similarly to me: Mexican-American people, younger people, African-American people,” said Flores. “We all collectively feel the same things in our history.” z

eality can and often does surpass fiction. And if not, someone tell it to the two Michelin star restaurant Atrio, in Spain. A couple stayed at the hotel that houses their restaurant and, after deceiving the receptionist, they went down to the cellar and stole 45 bottles of wine of the more than 40,000 hoarded there. Among them, a Chateau d’Yquem that was bottled under Napoleon’s rule in 1806 and that on the menu had a price of 150,000 euros. Atrio’s cellar was one of the best in Spain. In addition to the wine that contained 215 years of French and Spanish history, there were 80 more bottles of Chateau d’Yquem kept in a small room. Six of them were also from the 19th century. The pair of thieves spoke English, something that did not surprise the owners of the restaurant since in the area, Extremadura, a region near Portugal, Game of Thrones was being filmed. After dinner, they made the usual winery tour and went to their room. But at one in the morning, they went down to ask the receptionist if he could make them something to eat because they were hungry. They took advantage of the fact that he was moving away from the screens that reflected what the security cameras were recording to go down to the basement, open two doors with electronic locks and steal what the owners of Atrio define as “45 jewels”. But this is not the only incredible robbery worthy of Hollywood.

La pareja de ladrones hablaba inglés, algo que no extrañó a los dueños del restaurante ya que en la zona, Extremadura, una región próxima a Portugal, se estaba rodando Juego de Tronos. Pero a la una de la madrugada, bajaron a preguntar al recepcionista si podía hacerles algo de comer porque tenían hambre. But of the $1 billion, 73 never appeared again.

A fire near the royal palace in Dresden, Germany, was key to the gang of thieves responsible for the largest robbery in the history of the city. The electrical current was cut
and they were able to break a window and the glass that protected the collection of jewels of the Saxon monarchy without the alarms going off. It happened in 2019 and although in May of this year the police managed to arrest the last suspect, they have not yet been able to find the jewels, of incalculable value.

Hong Kong, in the middle of the pandemic and at 5 a.m., three men in their 20s entered a supermarket masked and wearing hoods to steal 600 rolls of toilet paper valued at $140. The police managed to arrest two of them. z

ore than a year-and-a-half since the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns about the virus remain relatively prevalent
today. One major reason why is the development and subsequent emergence of the Delta variant. First identified in India in late 2020, the variant quickly spread through that country, to Great Britain and other parts of Europe, before ultimately reaching the United States. In July 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Delta variant as the dominant strain of the coronavirus in the United States.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT DELTA
The Delta variant accounts for more than 99% of positive COVID-19 cases tracked in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC states that the Delta variant is at least twice as contagious as the Alpha variant, and even more transmissible than previous variants of the virus. “There are some studies that show that the Delta variant may be more sticky, so it may adhere to cells a lot tighter,” said Dr. Denise Johnson, Acting Physician General at the Pennsylvania Department of Health, as to why that may be the case. “Also people who have the Delta variant seem to have large volumes of virus… a lot more virus to be transmitted,” she added. Further data suggests that the Delta variant might cause more severe illness than previous variants. This is especially true for the unvaccinated population. “One thing that’s really important to know is that we have a reservoir of unvacci-
ENGLISH nated people, so there’s where the virus will continue to multiply,” said Dr. Johnson. The unvaccinated remain the greatest concern and risk of transmission who are most likely to get infected and subsequently transmit the virus.
VACCINES ARE KEY TO SLOW THE SPREAD
“We have to continue to get more people vaccinated,” said Dr. Johnson. While the potential of an individual who is fully vaccinated becoming infected, known as breakthrough infections, getting vaccinated remains the most effective defense against infections, severe illness, hospitalizations and death. CDC data has reported that while vaccine breakthrough infections can still be contagious, fully vaccinated individuals infected are less likely to develop serious illness, become hospitalized or die than those who are not vaccinated. In addition to vaccines being the best way to slow the spread of COVID-19, it is also the most effective way to decrease the likelihood of more variants developing. “The more people that are vaccinated, the less area there’ll be for the virus to continue to multiply,” said Dr. Johnson. “As the virus multiplies, it is more likely to mutate, and that’s how we get new variants,” she added. While the process of individuals receiving booster shots and vaccines for children between the ages of five to 11 are currently underway, so too are the ongoing efforts to get those who have yet to receive any vaccines start that process. “Our primary goal has to be to continue to reach those people who are not yet vaccinated, to get them vaccinated,” said Dr. Johnson.z

More recently in June 2021, JP Morgan Chase announced a new five-year, $400 million commitment — as part of the overall $30 billion commitment — to address and improve the housing affordability gap. “A lot of Americans, their wealth is created through their home,” said Dimon, noting that the Black and Latinx communities statistically have less home ownership and home equity than the White community.

This effort will include low-cost loans and grants targeted to nonprofits and organizations in the affordable housing space, creating more pathways to affordable and sustainable homeownership, and making data-driven policy recommendations. Dimon underscored how racial inequities play a role in many people of color having low or no credit scores, adding a barrier to taking out a loan or getting a home mortgage, which is why data is so critical: to find ways to make it more accessible. Racial inequities have been evident in the Black, Latinx and diverse communities for generations, and JP Morgan is making an effort to address them through its various efforts with Dimon leading the way. z

On the local level, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner beat Republican challenger Chuck Peruto to remain as the city’s top prosecutor for another four years. In winning, Krasner solidified himself as a national leader on criminal justice reform, and secured a relatively commanding victory like other previously-elected progressive DAs across the country. He will, however, have to do more about the gun violence crisis that still grips the city.

There were also historic victories for mayoral candidates of color in Boston (Michelle Wu), Pittsburgh (Ed Gainey), Cincinnati (Aftab Pureval), and New York City (Eric Adams). Beyond Krasner in Philly, the statewide judicial elections looked alot like the Republican wave that hit Virginia, as Republicans not only won a spot on the Supreme Court with Kevin Brobson, but also almost swept the appellate courts with Megan Sullivan and Stacy Wallace. These victories, while not as publicized, could greatly affect how the state’s courts rule on issues like voting rights, redistricting and reproductive rights. z

In her op-ed, Quiñones-Sánchez encouraged Black and Latina women to use her story as inspiration to do breast self-exams, and get regular mammograms “My promise to the women of Philadelphia is that I will be a strong advocate for wider screening options, more access to screening, and getting women of color more engaged in their health options,” Quiñones-Sánchez wrote. z

Al Dia has captured our successes and challenges for 25 years. More Latinos graduate high school but too few are prepared for college or career. More Latinos are in good careers and leadership roles across sectors, but not enough to be visible. Many Latino-serving nonprofits are excellent and well led, but don’t attract a lot of private donors. Outstanding individuals continue to answer the call to public service, but Latinos are missing from great chunks of the civil service and skilled trades workforces. Latino-owned businesses are praised, but face barriers to growth. Much work remains. With greater understanding and active support of the Latinx community from leaders of government, business, and nonprofit institutions, we can ensure that the pace of progress for Philadelphia’s under-served Latino population is accelerated and the future wellbeing of the region is secured. n Oct. 29, President Joe Biden met with Pope Francis privately for 78 minutes in the library of the Holy See. The event was of great interest because, on the one hand, he is only the second Catholic U.S. president in history, and on the other hand, his visit took place amid a strong rift within American Catholicism. These are the recent facts, but Massimo Faggioli knows the background to the story better than anyone else. A writer, historian and theologian, he is the most qualified voice to speak about Catholicism in America, and his book published this year, Joe Biden and Catholicism in the United States, is perfect for putting what is happening in context. Faggioli unravels the Catholic Church-American democracy relationship in its history and today. He recounts that the U.S. was born as a rejected Protestant religious project that rejected Roman "papist". In fact, white Anglo-Saxon Protestant hegemony and power marginalized French and Spanish Catholicism, which occupied the territory before the arrival of the Pilgrims. The rejection then turned into violence against the Catholic immigrants, whom they saw as a threat turned into votes that were of little benefit to their interests. This suspicion of Catholics only diminished in the period between World War II and the Second Vatican Council, well into the 20th century.

ENGLISH But, as Faggioli points out, the distrust was two-way, because the Catholic Church always looked askance at the American democratic project, and it was only thanks to pressure from European Catholics who arrived in the country after 1930 that Catholicism began to recognize the moral importance of democracy and American civil liberties — all within a liberal framework and flagrantly anti-communist. The book makes it clear that today the challenge is no longer to break through in society. Moreover, America is living a particularly Catholic moment, with key players in high state powers. President Joe Biden, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Chief Justice John Roberts.... This great Catholic "moment" contrasts with the abysmal split between neoliberal and neoconservative Catholics on issues such as the environment, race, immigration, sexual morality and abortion. Will liberal Biden be able to build this bridge within the American Catholic Church? It seems difficult. z

Esos son los hechos recientes, pero el trasfondo de esta historia lo conoce Massimo Faggioli mejor que nadie. Escritor, historiador y teólogo, es la voz más calificada para hablar del catolicismo en Estados Unidos, por lo que su libro Joe Biden and Catholicism in the United States, publicado este año, resulta perfecto para poner en contexto lo que sucede. Faggioli desentraña la relación iglesia católica-democracia americana en su historia y en su actualidad. Así, cuenta que EE. De hecho, la hegemonía y el poder blanco protestante anglosajón marginó al catolicismo francés y español, que ocupaba el territorio, incluso, antes de la llegaba de los peregrinos. El rechazo luego se transformó en violencia contra los inmigrantes católicos, a quienes veían como una amenaza convertida en votos poco beneficiosos para sus intereses. Esta sospecha a los católicos sólo disminuiría en el periodo entre la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el Concilio Vaticano II, ya muy entrado el siglo XX. n November 8, after 20 months of restrictions, the United States opened the door, among others, to foreign travelers from the European Union. A ban that cost a fortune and many frictions between the White House and European governments was ended. Europe, which has been allowing Americans to enter since June, insistently asked Washington to lift the ban, which they described as arbitrary. The central argument had to do with the highest percentages of vaccinated in the Old Continent and the lowest incidence figures for the virus. Even on August 30, the European Council recommended returning to travel restrictions for those arriving from the United States, but the idea did not prosper. The decision to block the passage, initially for 30 days, to foreign travelers from European territory was announced by Donald Trump on March 10, 2020 and the effect was immediately felt in the bags. On the 12th, Dow Jones fell 7%, causing the suspension of operations on Wall Street. Before the pandemic, some 15 million American tourists traveled to Europe each year, a similar number of travelers from that continent to the United States. The good news for the tourism industry is in sight and by these days there will be a balance of the impact achieved by the decision of the Biden government. The lifting of the ban includes crossing the border between the United States and Mexico. It is estimated that the border states stopped receiving about 20 billion dollars from travelers from Mexican territory. And in the case of Mexico, it is estimated that the closure has cost the economy of that country about 70 billion dollars. In each case, today’s circumstances are very different from those before March 2020. The expectation is in the way in which each one will accommodate the recovery of the volume of tourists and the control of the minimum protection conditions against Covid -19.z

El argumento central tenía que ver con los mayores porcentajes de vacunados en el Viejo Continente y las menores cifras de incidencia del virus. Incluso, el pasado 30 de agosto, el Consejo Europeo recomendó volver a las restricciones de viajes a quienes llegaran de Estados Unidos, pero la idea no prosperó. Recuerdo que la impresora láser la compramos con un regalo caído del cielo en la forma de un cheque de reembolso de impuestos del IRS, que creo nos llegó en 1992. wasn’t available anywhere, not even in the Arts supplies store where I had bought the knife to cut the paper, the rulers to cut it straight, and the glue to paste up the pages. I decided to set out to build that last piece of technology with my own hands. University of Iowa’s Professor Bill Zima, who died in 2012, came again to my rescue. One of few books he asked us to buy for his “Desktop Publishing” class in the University’s School of Journalism was one entitled “How to Produce a Small Newspaper, A Guide for Independent Journalists”, authored by a couple who decided to start a small community newspaper —the Harvard Post— in a small town in Massachusetts and were caring enough to write at the end a volume about their experience. I was one reader who ripped with enthusiasm the pages dedicated to “how to build a light box,” indispensable to finish the pre-press process of newspaper production in my own home. The light box came to life days later after reading the instructions more than once, and a visit to the Home Depot store where I found, down to the nails, all the list of items listed in the book’s section entitled “How to Build a Light Box”. A switch, electrical cables, the actual lights, and the translucent glass to put on top of the square frame made of wood, carefully cut and pieced together with nails that I hammered out with enthusiasm as I believe that was the last hurdle in my way to become an independent journalist. I had no idea at the time what was about to happen in the world of digital publishing, immersed as I was in my little world of trying to produce a modest newspaper, not “out of a garage”, but in the living room of my home, as my very modest residence in the Olney section of North Philadelphia even lacked the providential “garage” of the feverish and foolish inventor.
