uerto Rico and Mexico have been protagonists in the decades-long migration to the United States, with a strong cultural impact. In Philadelphia we have El Taller Puertorriqueño, whose goal is “the preservation, promotion and cultural resistance of the Puerto Rican community”, according to fashion designer Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González, who will assume the executive direction of the organization on December 27. She replaced Carmen Febo San Miguel, who for 22 years was in charge of el Taller and made it a cultural reference in the region. Our cover story takes a journey through the life of Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González and the challenges of her new responsibility. In the culture section, you’ll find the story of Mexican-American indigenous singer Flores, who recently released “Mayahuel”, a single that bears the name of a debut project that had to be postponed due to the pandemic, is also told. uerto Rico y México han sido protagonistas por la migración de décadas hacia Estados Unidos, con una fuerte incidencia cultural. En Filadelfia funciona el Taller Puertorriqueño, desde donde se busca “la preservación, promoción y resistencia cultural de la comunidad puertorriqueña”. Así lo expresa por Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González, diseñadora de moda, quien asumirá el 27 de diciembre la dirección ejecutiva de la organización. Reemplaza a Carmen Febo San Miguel, quien por 22 años estuvo al frente del Taller y lo convirtió en referente cultural de la región. En ese reportaje encontrará un recorrido por la vida de Nasheli Juliana Ortiz-González y los retos en esta nueva responsabilidad. En lo cultural también se cuenta la historia de Flores, la cantante indígena mexicano-estadounidense y de su más reciente producción, “Mayahuel”, un sencillo que a su vez lleva el nombre de un proyecto debut que debió aplazar por la pandemia. Flores recuerda que el nombre es el de una deidad femenina de la mitología azteca. Y, por supuesto, se conocen detalles de su vida, de sus orígenes, del peso cultural que carga.
