I

f the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and the resurrection of Christ have something in common, it is unbelief. Saint John's Gospel (20:19-27) says that Jesus Christ showed himself to his apostles on a Saturday, but Thomas wasn’t among them. Jesus left and the apostles later told Thomas what they had seen, but he didn’t believe them. "Until I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my fingers into the hole of the nails, and put my hand into the wound in his side," he said. Eight days later, Jesus returned and guided Thomas' hand through the marks which the Roman torture had left on his body. When Thomas recognized him as his Lord, Jesus replied, with disappointment, "You believe because you have seen me. Happy are those who have not seen, but believe!" In the case of COVID-19, the same thing happened. Collaboration between scientists allowed rapid progress in the genetic analysis of COVID-19. Early on, they made mathematical projections about its potential growth and gave warnings. They even recommended quarantines and

ENGLISH social distancing as uncomfortable but necessary and inevitable measures of containment. It all fell on deaf ears for a while. China, with all the problems it had, with how delicate the authoritarianism of its system is - and how useful it was in that extreme context - did its part and meanwhile we look on from the outside, as if that were not going to happen here. But it's one thing to try to contain the movement of people and another, impossible, to contain the movement of viruses. Chile, for example, already has more than 2,400 infected people and its politicians insist that there is no point to apply measures as harsh as a national quarantine. So far, only eight deaths have been confirmed due to COVID-19. Until they start piling up the bodies in hospital corridors or in tents outside, as Italy and Spain are now having to do. Until they put their fingers on the bodies of the dead and see the physical effects of the virus, the emotional wounds on the doctors torn apart by exhaustion and despair, and the tears of fragmented families, they will not understand that this time the word was meant to become flesh, to become a corpse. As long as they do not see the bodies falling and piling up and, above all, as long as their pockets do not collapse, they will not understand believing without seeing would have saved thousands of lives in the short and medium term. If this hard lesson serves any purpose, let it be that once the funerals are over and we have to rebuild the economy, politicians will remember the decades of warnings we have had in the face of climate change and believe and act before we continue to see all the disasters that have been predicted for so long become reality. i la pandemia de coronavirus, el cambio climático y la resurrección de Cristo tienen algo en común, es la incredulidad. Dice el evangelio de San Juan (20:19–27) que Jesucristo se mostró ante sus apóstoles un sábado, pero entre ellos no estaba Tomás. Jesús se fue y más tarde los apóstoles le contaron a Tomás lo que habían visto, pero él no creyó: “Hasta que no vea la marca de los clavos en sus manos, no meta mis dedos en el agujero de los clavos y no introduzca mi mano en la herida de su costado, no creeré”. Ocho días después, Jesús volvió y guió la mano de Tomás por las marcas que la tortura romana había dejado en su cuerpo. Cuando Tomás lo reconoció como su Señor, Jesús replicó, con decepción, “Crees porque me has visto. ¡Felices los que no han visto, pero creen!” En este caso ha sucedido lo mismo: el trabajo colaborativo entre científicos permitió avanzar rápidamente en el análisis genético del COVID–19, a tiempo los científicos empezaron a hacer proyecciones matemáticas sobre el potencial crecimiento del virus y a dar advertencias, a recomendar el uso de cuarentenas y distanciamiento social como

medidas incómodas pero necesarias e inevitables de contención. China, con todos los problemas que tuvo, con lo delicado que es el autoritarismo de su sistema –y lo útil que fue en ese contexto extremo– hizo su parte y entre tanto nosotros miramos desde afuera, como si eso no fuera a pasar acá. Pero una cosa es intentar contener el movimiento de las personas y otra, imposible, contener el movimiento de los virus. Chile, por ejemplo, ya tiene más de 2.400 contagios y sus políticos insisten en que no tiene sentido aplicar una medida tan dura como una cuarentena nacional, de momento sólo han confirmado 8 muertes a causa del COVID–19. Hasta que no empiecen a acumular los cuerpos en los pasillos de los hospitales o en tiendas afuera de ellos, como ahora están teniendo que hacer Italia y España, hasta que no pongan sus dedos sobre los cuerpos de los muertos y vean las heridas físicas y emocionales en los médicos despedazados por el agotamiento y la desesperanza y los desgarros de las familias fragmentadas, no entenderán que esta vez la palabra estaba destinada a hacerse carne, a hacerse cadáver. Mientras no vean los cuerpos caer y amontonarse y, sobre todo, mientras no se les desplomen los bolsillos, no entenderán que esta vez creer sin ver habría salvado miles de vidas en el corto y mediano plazo. Si esta dura, durísima, lección sirve de algo, que sea para que una vez acabemos los funerales y tengamos que reconstruir la economía, los políticos recuerden las décadas de advertencias que hemos tenido frente al cambio climático y crean y actúen antes de que sigamos viendo hacerse realidad todos los desastres que nos habían augurado desde hace tanto tiempo ya. ince the first case of Coronavirus in the U.S. was reported on January 21, 2020, many in the country wish they had a time machine to go back and make smarter decisions. As was the case in earlier-affected countries –China, Italy, and Spain– the government response was perhaps timid in measuring what is now a pandemic with a cautious prognosis. Only nine days after the first case was reported in the country, Chicago confirmed the first case of person-to-per-

son transmission, the same day the World Health Organization warned COVID-19 was a public health emergency for the entire world. Four days later, the number of cases rose to 12. Fifteen days later, the contagion was community-based. The deaths started a month after the first case, and since then there have been over 23,000 from more than 524,000 cases, of which close to 124,000 have been recovered. Of all the states in the union, the one with the highest number of cases has been New York, with a rate that quickly exceeded 10,000 followed closely by New Jersey and California. In addition to the virus’ strong impact, New York has also been notable for its government's response to control the spread of the virus and to provide immediate primary care.

esde que el primer caso de Coronavirus en Estados Unidos se reportara el 21 de Enero del 2020, muchos en el país desearían haber tomado decisiones diferentes. Tal como sucedió en los primeros países afectados –China, Italia, España–, la respuesta gubernamental fue quizás tímida a la hora de medir las proporciones de la pandemia. Tan sólo 9 días después del primer caso reportado en el país, se confirmaba un segundo en Chicago. Quince días más tarde, el contagio era comunitario. Las muertes empezaron a reportarse un mes después del primer caso, y desde entonces hay 23.000 muertes reportadas, y casi 525.000 casos, de los cuales se han recuperado 124.000. De entre todos los estados de la unión, el que presenta mayor número de casos ha sido Nueva

York, con una tasa que rápidamente superó los 10.000 –actualmente cuenta con 25.665 casos– seguido de cerca por New Jersey (2.844) y California (2.266). Además del fuerte impacto del virus en el territorio, Nueva York también ha destacado por la respuesta de la gubernatura para controlar el contagio y para ofrecer atención primaria de manera inmediata.

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in New York State was reported on March 1, and in just one month, the state is approaching 50,000 confirmed cases. Six days after the first report, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a statewide state of emergency and issued an order requiring all ill citizens to avoid contact with others. Cuomo also asked federal officials "to nationalize the manufacture of medical supplies,” redoubled efforts to prevent public congregations, and established emergency hospitals. The increase in the testing protocols, the closing of all non-essential businesses, and the order to stay home for all citizens have set the tone for how the entire country will have to respond to COVID-19. "What is happening in New York is going to wind up happening in California, and in Washington state, and Illinois," Cuomo said at a press conference Tuesday. "Where we are today, you will be in three or four weeks or five or six weeks. We are your future.” Despite not having unconditional support from the Trump administration, the prompt response from leadership in New York is precisely what public health and epidemic experts recommend. Nationwide, 250,000 Americans have been tested for the virus, The Hill reported, "with just over 500,000 positive results" so far. And although Trump has announced the mobilization of the National Guard and the construction of makeshift medical facilities in New York, California, and Washington, his government continues to approach the crisis through an economic lens. "America will again — and soon — be open for business," Trump said. The example of leadership seems to have moved, then, from Washington to New York.

POLITICS COVID-19 IN SOUTH AMERICA

A GRADUAL LOCKDOWN VENEZUELA, PERU, ARGENTINA, COLOMBIA AND BOLIVIA ENTER INTO QUARANTINE. VENEZUELA, PERÚ, ARGENTINA, COLOMBIA Y BOLIVIA ENTRAN EN CUARENTENA.

ither because Latin American governments are learning from the mistakes of Europeans, or because fear has led them to do so, five South American countries have declared quarantine in response to COVID-19: Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, and Bolivia.

VENEZUELA

Nicolas Maduro's government was the first in the continent to impose a nation-wide quarantine. Venezuela’s first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed on March 13 and the measure was imposed four days later. Even so, to date, 70 cases have been diagnosed. The government's authoritarianism may be a factor contributing to the measure’s imposition on the population and consequent containment of the epidemic. Regardless, the Venezuelan government is going to have serious difficulties in accessing international financing for the fight against the virus.

PERU

Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra was the next to decree a quarantine, which began two days after Venezuela's on March 15 and will last until March 30. However, he has already announced that the measure will probably have to be extended because thousands have failed to comply with the confinement. At least 8,000 have been detained. The Peruvian case has singularity in relation to its Constitution, which limits the restriction of fundamental rights such as freedom of assembly and transit through the country to a maximum of 60 days. A reform of Magna Carta would need to happen for an extension.

ARGENTINA

Argentina entered quarantine on March 20 and lasted until March 31. The president, Alberto Fernández, had already ordered schools closed on March 15 and recommended social distancing on March 19, but a total quarantine was necessary. In an economy that has already been hit hard, where approximately 40% of the population depends on informal work, the stay-at-home order is also

ENGLISH a condemnation of hunger for thousands of people.

COLOMBIA

Colombian President Iván Duque decreed a quarantine on March 24 and will last until April 13. However, more than a third of the population has been in quarantine drills since March 20. Initially, the drill would run from the 20th to the 23rd and Duque decreed that the quarantine would begin on the 25th, leaving a day in between. To avoid the stampede of people to shops, the national government coordinated with municipalities to extend the drill until the 24th, when it coincided with the beginning of the official quarantine.

BOLIVIA

Bolivian President Jeanine Áñez decreed the beginning of the quarantine from March 22nd to April 4th. She also announced that the presidential elections would be postponed indefinitely. While this is understandable in the state of health emergency in which the country finds itself, it can also be detrimental to her governance. In Bolivia, the directors of the largest public hospital network in the capital sounded the alarm about the absolute lack of supplies needed to deal with the virus "caps, chinstraps, boots, glasses, gowns, and even less with high-level resources such as intensive care drugs. They send us to war without weapons, they condemn us to fight in unfavorable conditions."

VENEZUELA

El gobierno de Nicolás Maduro fue el primero en el continente en imponer la cuarentena en todo el territorio. El primer caso de COVID–19 en el país fue diagnosticado el 13 de marzo y la medida fue radicalmente impuesta cuatro días más tarde, el 17. La medida fue tomada con más premura vista la deteriorada infraestructura del país. Aun así, a la fecha se reportan 70 casos diagnosticados. Si bien el autoritarismo del gobierno puede contribuir a la imposición de la medida en la población y la consecuente contención de la epidemia, el gobierno venezolano va a tener serias dificultades para acceder a financiación internacional.

PERÚ

El presidente peruano, Martín Vizcarra, fue el siguiente en decretar la cuarentena, que empezó el 15 de marzo y se extenderá hasta el 30 de este mes. Aunque es probable que la medida se prolongue debido a que miles de personas han incumplido el confinamiento. Por lo menos 8.000 personas han sido detenidas.

El caso peruano tiene la singularidad de que que la restricción de derechos fundamentales como la libertad de reunión sólo puede darse durante un máximo de 60 días. Si se extiende la cuarentena, deberían reformar la Constitución.

ARGENTINA

Argentina entró en cuarentena el 20 de marzo y se extenderá hasta el 31. El presidente de este país, Alberto Fernández, ya había decretado el cierre de colegios desde el 15 y recomendado el distanciamiento social a todos desde el 19, pero fue necesaria la imposición de la cuarentena total. En una economía golpeada, donde el 40% de la población depende del trabajo informal, la imposición de no salir a la calle también es una condena de hambre para miles de personas.

COLOMBIA

El presidente de Colombia, Iván Duque, decretó que la cuarentena empezará formalmente el 24 de marzo y se extenderá hasta el 13 de abril. Sin embargo, más de una tercera parte de la población se encuentra en simulacro de cuarentena desde el 20 de marzo. Inicialmente el simulacro iría del 20 al 23 y Duque decretó que la cuarentena iniciaría el 25, lo que dejaría un día intermedio. Para evitar la estampida de personas a los comercios, el gobierno nacional extendió el simulacro hasta el 24, momento en que empatará con el inicio de la cuarentena oficial.

BOLIVIA

La presidente boliviana, Jeanine Áñez, decretó el inicio de la cuarentena a partir del 22 de marzo y hasta el 4 de abril. Asimismo, anunció que las elecciones presidenciales serían aplazadas indefinidamente. Si bien esto es comprensible en el estado de emergencia sanitara en que se encuentra el país, también puede ir en detrimento de su gobernabilidad. En Bolivia, los directores de la mayor red de hospitales públicos de la capital dieron la voz de alarma sobre la absoluta carencia de los insumos mínimos necesarios para enfrentar el virus "Nos mandan a la guerra sin armas, nos condenan a luchar en condiciones desfavorables”. hile the coronavirus pandemic is still relatively in its early stages, small business owners and workers have already started feeling its effects. As a result, various large companies locally and nationally, are helping mitigate some of the negative ones. Here are five examples of large corporations that are playing a role in ensuring its workers and customers are able to effectively navigate this global crisis. FACEBOOK On March 17, Facebook announced that it is creating a $100 million grant program and offering ad credits for up to 30,000 eligible small businesses in over 30 countries. The program aims to help by keeping the workforce strong, helping with rent costs, connecting with more customers and covering operational costs. Facebook is also making its Facebook Hub, a resource formerly for Facebook employees and health experts, available for everyone. In addition, the social media giant is also creating new virtual training to support businesses operating during this situation. PECO On March 13, PECO announced an expansion to its various assistance programs to support all customers. Existing programs include Customer Assistance Program (CAP), Low-income Home En-

ENGLISH ergy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Matching Energy Assistance Fund (MEAP), Low Income Usage Reduction Program (LIURP), and Customer Assistance and Referral Evaluation Services (CARES). In addition, PECO is also suspending service disconnections and waiving new late payment charges through at least May 1, 2020. COMCAST On March 12, Comcast announced two program enhancements to help customers in low-income households deal with the pandemic. The first enhancement will provide an easier pathway for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign up with Comcast by offering new customers 60 days of complimentary Internet Essential service. Normally, that service is available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95 a month. Secondly, Comcast is increasing Internet speeds for all new and existing customers. Other initiatives include free Xfinity WiFi hotspots, paused data plans and no disconnections or late fees. GOOGLE On March 10, Google announced that it has created a COVID-19 fund to enable all its contract and temporary workers globally to take paid sick leave if they have potential COVID-19 symptoms or are in quarantine. Since then, Google has expanded its coronavirus response by providing more information, including tips on working from home, how students and teachers can communicate remotely, resources for small businesses and more. MICROSOFT On March 9, Microsoft announced that they will continue paying the hourly workers who support their campus. In addition, Microsoft donated $1 million to the Puget Sound’s COVID-19 Response Fund, a coalition of philanthropy, government, and business partners joined together to help rapidly deploy resources to community-based organizations at the frontlines of the coronavirus outbreak in the Puget Sound region. As the pandemic has grown, more companies have taken steps towards helping ease some of the difficulties that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought worldwide.

Rivera’s work helping make a positive impact for youth goes far beyond her work at Providence Center and Philadelphia. el trabajo de Rivera va mucho más allá de su trabajo en el Providence Center y en Filadelfia. ENGLISH Rivera eventually earned her GED, and went on to obtain additional higher education degrees, including a master’s in educational leadership. Rivera’s unique journey helped spark a passion for youth development that included a number of professional opportunities across Philadelphia and New Jersey. Last September, she was hired as the executive director of Providence Center in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia, which provides programming for children, youth and adults with the mission of educating people to have the power and spirit to transform their lives and community. However, Rivera’s work helping make a positive impact for youth goes far beyond her work at Providence Center and Philadelphia.

JOINING THE SCHOOL BOARD

A resident of Collingswood, New Jersey for about six years, Rivera has remained very active in that community, as well. A few years ago while working in Camden, she was approached by a friend and former colleague to potentially join the School Board of Education. “At that time, I didn’t know much about the school board… the only thing I knew was that it was transitioning from an allwhite, older male board to something different,” she reflected. Back then, she didn’t feel she had the expertise, nor the time, to commit to being on a school board. So she kindly declined. Fast forward to this past summer, and she was again apAPRIL 1 - 8, 2020

proached - this time by current board members who sat in conversation with her to provide further details, including the amount of time she’d need to commit, the role she’d have and why she’d be a fit on the board. “In their conversation, what I heard was that they had already made progress towards changing into a much younger board, a much more diverse board as far as age and gender, but not ethnicity and race,” said Rivera, adding there was one African-American woman board member at the time. As Rivera contemplated the decision of whether or not to run for election onto the board, her focus was clear. “If I choose to run, I want to know that I can be verbal about things that I care about. I don’t want to just be the Latina on the board, I want to actually have a voice,” she confirmed. After receiving the clarity that she would have that opportunity, Rivera decided to run for one of two empty seats. Her vision, as a younger Hispanic woman, was for her election to the board to serve as motivation for more young people to do the same. In turn, it would also trickle down to influencing hirings, contracting and how things would be run across the district. Rivera was elected and became the first Latina ever elected onto the Collingswood School Board.

A SHIFTING DEMOGRAPHIC

According to statistics from the U.S. Census in 2019, the Latino population in Collingswood is about 6.7%. In her time living in Collingswood, Rivera has seen a slow increase in Latino presence and younger individuals moving into the city. “It’s really a progressive town,” she said. “It’s just a very trendy town, and that brings a lot of different types of people.” Rivera would like to see the school board reflect the student population both in the district and the city overall. In the couple months she has served on the board so far, Rivera says she’s proud to see that equity, equality and diversity has already been an ongoing conversation. “I’m happy that I am not the only one trying to carry that torch,” she said. “I think that it means something different when someone of color actually talks about it.”

"En su conversación, lo que escuché fue que ya habían hecho progresos en el cambio a una junta mucho más joven, una junta mucho más diversa en cuanto a edad y género, pero no en cuanto a etnia y raza", dijo Rivera, añadiendo que había una mujer afroamericana miembro de la junta en ese momento. Su visión, como una mujer hispana más joven, era que su elección a la junta sirviera de motivación para que más jóvenes hicieran lo mismo. A su vez, también se filtraría para influir en las contrataciones y la forma en que las cosas se llevarán a cabo en todo el distrito. Rivera fue elegida y se convirtió en la primera latina elegida en la Junta Escolar de Collingswood.

UN CAMBIO DEMOGRÁFICO

Según las estadísticas del censo de EE.UU. en 2019, la población latina en Collingswood es de alrededor del 6,7%. En el tiempo que lleva viviendo en Collingswood, Rivera ha visto un lento aumento de la presencia latina y de los individuos más jóvenes que se mudan a la ciudad. BRINGING CHANGE TO THE DISTRICT

As the mother of a teenage son who has been a student of the district since the first grade, Rivera often discusses with her son his experiences. She reflected on the initial weeks after moving to Collingswood from Camden. As a six-year-old, Rivera remembered her son telling her how much safer he felt in that school as opposed to the school in Camden. That school, which Rivera worked for, was a new School of Choice charter school where many students often moved from one school to another, were dealing with trauma, and had a variety of different needs. It was a stark contrast to the school and district her son currently part of. “It’s definitely a community culture,” Rivera said of the Collingswood School District. She sees a level of passion. creativity and resourcefulness among the teachers in the district that impresses her. “As someone with a background in education, I look for those things in my child’s teacher - someone who thinks outside the box, someone who may think differently from me,” she added. What’s missing, said Rivera, is the reflection of the community in the staff. That lack of representation often results in a lack of communication with families who may speak a different language.

As someone who grew up in a household with a mother who didn’t feel confident enough in her English language skills to really be proactively involved in her school life, Rivera doesn’t want to see other youth and families go through the same. “My perception as a child then, and as an adult now is that that wasn’t solely her responsibility,” she said. “The School District is there to educate children and in the process should also be there to support parents and helping them educate their children.” She’s proud to say that the district is making progress in that endeavor, making communication efforts more inclusive for all families. “I think we’re ahead of the curve, heading in the right direction, but we still need to work hard to get to where we need to be to support all the families and to communicate with all of our families effectively,” she said. The board also features three high school students who represent Collingswood, as well as nearby towns Oaklyn and Woodlynne - who report on different components of their school dynamics each month. “That’s probably my favorite part of the public board meetings,” said Rivera, “to hear

Como miembro de la junta, Rivera aboga no sólo por los estudiantes y sus familias, sino también por el personal de la escuela y la facultad. El Providence Center educa a personas de todas las edades y les proporciona información valiosa para ayudarles a transformar sus vidas y su comunidad. Ese impacto se transfiere del aula al hogar, y viceversa. "Nadie quiere más para sí mismo", dijo Rivera, señalando que una de las maneras más efectivas de ayudar a un niño puede ser tan simple como escucharle. "Definitivamente creo que la dirección y el entrenamiento y estar ahí para ellos es importante, pero en realidad tenemos que escucharlos ", dijo. As both a parent of a child in the district and a board member, Rivera is able to play both roles. She can make an impact in her son’s life and education, while also being a voice for the needs of the other youth and families who are a part of the district, as well.

A DUAL RESPONSIBILITY

Both her work on the school board and at Providence Center can be classified as “intergenerational.” As a board member, Rivera advocates not only for students and their families, but also the school staff and faculty. Providence Center educates people of all age groups and equips them with valuable information to help them transform their lives and community That type of vast impact transfers from the classroom to the home, and vice versa. “No one doesn’t want more for themselves,” said Rivera, noting that one of the most effective ways of helping a child can be as simple as just listening to the child. “I definitely think direction and coaching and being there for them is important, but we actually have to intentionally listen to them,” she said. “If you listen well enough, you can kind of build a relationship with that child enough to redirect them and get their respect.” That rule applies to every adult in a child’s life, and the more adults the child feels they can trust if they are having an issue, the more beneficial it can be for that child. “As an adult, we forget what it was like for us to be a kid, and we get disconnected from that,” said Rivera. In both roles, Rivera is able to help guide youth and adults in the areas in which they need it most.

NEW GROWING CONCERN

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting daily life for all. While Rivera serves two very different communities in Collingswood and Fairhill, the impact of the current pandemic is prevalent in both. “It weighs heavily on me to know that so many already underserved children and families are now facing drastic losses in income, services, and educational resources because of COVID-19,” she said.

In Fairhill, where 55% of the community live below the poverty line, making it the most economically disadvantaged neighborhood in the city, there is no telling just how the pandemic will negatively impact the already poverty-stricken population. Providence Center is supposed to be a safe place for the dozens of youth and families who need the various resources and services it provides. “This pandemic is disproportionately affecting these families… yet we can’t be there for them now when they need it most,” said Rivera. Statewide, New Jersey is also dealing with its dilemma as the U.S. state with the second most confirmed cases in the nation. As the rest of the nation, and world, continues to take the pandemic day-by-day, the level of concern will continue to rise, due to the uncertainty. Like every other nonprofit, the disruption caused by the pandemic puts people, as well as organizations at risk for loss of funds. While Providence Center strives to be creative and innovative in the ways it engages with clients during these uncertain times, the possibility of lost funding hangs over the organization like a cloud. “Our focus is to come back stronger than ever because we know our community will need us more than ever,” Rivera said, referring to when the crisis eventually ends. As someone who has received much needed help from others in every step of her journey - academically and professionally - Rivera has made it a point of emphasis to help as many people as she can in their journeys, as well. “My journey means nothing if I can’t give back,” she said.

emedios laughs, but her laughter resonates in another world," wrote Octavio Paz about Spanish surrealist Remedios Varo in an article entitled, "Apparitions and Disappearances." In it, he referred to her great capacity to reflect places not from imagination, but memory. Now the MALBA in Buenos Aires has collected 35 paintings, drawings and stories from Varo’s personal archive to display in a new exhibition called Constellations. It can be toured on the museum’s Instagram page complete with an introduction from an expert. All the work showcased is from between 1942 and 1963 — the almost 30 years she lived in Mexican exile after fleeing the Spanish Civil War. A magical exile full of adventures and friendship with other "witches of surrealism."

Ahora el Malba de Buenos Aires recoge su obra en la exposición Constelaciones, que puede ser seguida a través de la cuenta de Instagram del museo. Nada menos que 35 pinturas, dibujos, esbozos e incluso cuentos fantásti-

cos de su archivo personal. Todo ello centrado en los casi treinta años que vivió en el exilio mexicano, desde 1942 a 1963, después de haber huido de España con el estallido de la guerra civil. Un exilio mágico y no exento de aventuras.

UNA VIDA NÓMADA

Nacida en un pequeño pueblo catalán cuyos contornos ruinosos seguiría rememorando en su obra de adulta, Remedios fue bautizada así para aliviar el dolor de su madre por la pérdida reciente de dos de sus hijos. Like Surrealism, she was also interested in astrology and alchemy. Varo designed Tarot cards and developed some witchcraft practices, embodying the sorceress role alongside Carrington. For example, in La llamada (The Call), the protagonist's hair is tied to the cosmos. Regarding alchemy, for her, it was a way of transcending as she did through painting. A journey, or "art of levitation."

rison has never been a place that invites creativity, but it has traditionally been somewhere dreamers and revolutionaries imagine their projects of freedom. Alcatraz Island ceased to exist as a notorious federal prison in 1963 by the order of President Kennedy. A few years later, a young Sioux installed an old radio there and began a mythical program: Radio Free Alcatraz. John Trudell was a 23-year-old Santee Sioux, with earrings and long brown hair. How could he become a romantic leader for the minority of Native Americans who followed him? Armed with only his voice he achieved the unimaginable: thousands of listeners began changing their minds about the historical injustices perpetrated against the native peoples of North America. He explained daily how native minorities were marginalized in his country: how, for example, they were forced to pay disproportionate prices for their land.

A THREAT TO THE FBI

Trudell would broadcast his show from a cold prison cell with an old radio set, and got power from a noisy generator. He used to smoke cigarettes while broadcasting and always had a guest with him. Today, the programs can be found in the archives of Radio Pacifica. His voice is preserved on a series of cassettes labeled "Alcatraz," but they only cover the period between 1969 and 1970. The Radio Free Alcatraz program lasted until 1973 when the FBI considered the young Trudell a serious threat. But we have to go back a few years to understand what a young Sioux was doing in a cell at Alcatraz broadcasting a soon-to-be-famous show. On November 20, 1969, 79 IOAT activists landed on the island with the intention of settling. The IOAT was an intertribal organization working for the rights of the entire native minority in the United States. It invoked an old treaty from 1868 to occupy land left uninhabited or inactive by the federal government. Trudell, who had recently arrived from Vietnam, did not participate in the occupation but thought he could meet with the activists who had settled on Alcatraz to amplify what was happening in that forgotten corner of the world. It was his way of collaborating with the liberation group. He had studied radio for a semester, so he was able to promote the program and tell the story of the island’s occupants for years. It was the beginning of a long career as an activist against racism and the oppression of ethnic minorities, which would culminate in 1983 with the release of a record of tribal voices. Trudell's story can teach us something valuable: how a modest cultural initiative can challenge a powerful system, and even change a nation's history.

Fue el inicio de una larga trayectoria como activista contra el racismo y la opresión de las minorías étnicas, que culminaría en el año 1983 con la edición de un disco de voces tribales.
