ust days away from the Iowa caucus, AL DÍA has decided to pay tribute to the candidate who went beyond ego, beyond the political ambition that devours systems, and whose promise to fight for the United States remains as strong as ever. Even leaving aside the fact that he was the only Latino among the dozens of people who threw their hat into the ring for the Democratic nomination, Julián Castro has distinguished himself through his criticism of U.S. political protocols. While his colleagues made a pilgrimage to Iowa after his candidacy was announced, the former housing secretary traveled first to Puerto Rico; he has outlined coherent plans in support of free trade, a route to green energy, abortion rights and strengthening the rights of the LGBTQ community. From the beginning, Castro was the first to issue an immigration proposal, not only from his experience as a second-generation immigrant, but also focusing on comprehensive immigration reform, where "cruelty is not the solution." He proposed to still include border security, but "in an intelligent and humane manner," as he said in his inaugural campaign speech. Similarly, after traveling almost the entire country with his

ENGLISH plan, Castro demonstrated his particular way of doing things, such as when he bought a TV ad on the Fox network to directly blame the president for the mass shooting of the Hispanic community in El Paso, TX. Just weeks before leaving the race, the candidate unveiled his comprehensive plan for the disabled, which they called "the most ambitious and intersectional agenda in this cycle.” However, it was hard for Castro to gain traction. At the end of October, Castro announced that his campaign was at risk of ending due to lack of funds, and his position in the polls — where he had a 2% approval rating — did not allow him to qualify for the November Democratic debate, and a few weeks later he announced his final withdrawal from the race. His campaign experience has made him critical of the way politics are conducted in the country, stating among other things that the tradition of first-nominating states in primaries "does not reflect the diversity of the nation," and there should instead be an effort made to "rearrange the Democratic primary voting schedule" so that the most diverse states are allowed to vote first. Once he joined the Warren campaign, Julián Castro kept his sleeves rolled up and his willingness to work for what really matters: the country Still, in the face of a rapidly whitening primary, the Democratic establishment seems to be turning a blind eye to the impending reality. As New York Times editor Jennifer Medina said: “How could Democrats forgo the symbolic significance of a Latino candidate onstage, especially when Latinos are expected to be the largest ethnic voting bloc come November 2020?” Perhaps the country is simply not ready for Julián Castro and the vision of a truly intersectional, inclusive future that represents us all.❚ THE EDITOR

tan sólo días del Iowa Caucus, AL DÍA ha decidido rendir homenaje al candidato que fue más allá del ego, más allá de la ambición política que devora sistemas, y cuya promesa de luchar por Estados Unidos sigue más vigente que nunca. Aún dejando de lado el hecho de ser el único Latino entre la enorme cantidad de personas que lanzaron su sombrero al ruedo por la nominación demócrata, Castro se ha distinguido por sus críticas a los protocolos políticos estadounidenses. Mientras sus colegas peregrinaban a Iowa una vez anunciada su candidatura, el ex secretario de vivienda viajó antes que nada a Puerto Rico. También se ha distinguido por delinear planes coherentes en apoyo al libre comercio, una ruta hacia la energía verde, el derecho al aborto y el reforzamiento de los derechos de la comunidad LGBTQ. Desde un inicio, Castro fue el primero en publicar una propuesta de inmigración no sólo desde su experiencia como segunda generación de inmigrantes, sino enfocándose en una reforma migratoria comprehensiva, donde “la crueldad no sea la solución”, que incluyera seguridad fronteriza pero “de manera inteligente y humana”, según decía en su discurso inaugural de campaña. Sin embargo, la campaña del latino fue una de las más obstaculizadas entre todos los candidatos. A finales del mes de octubre, Castro anunció que su campaña estaba en riesgo de llegar a su fin por falta de fondos, y su posición en los sondeos – donde contaba con un 2% de aprobación – no le permitió calificar al debate demócrata de noviembre, y pocas semanas después anunció su retiro definitivo de la contienda. Su experiencia en la campaña le ha vuelto crítico de la manera en la que se hace política en el país, declarando entre otras cosas que la tradición de los primeros estados nominadores en las primarias “no refleja la diversidad de la nación”, y sugirió esa semana “reordenar el calendario de votación primaria demócrata” de manera que se permita a los estados más diversos votar primero. ith the daily rush of the new year, many people can forget when to have an annual checkup with their doctor. Others even postpone cancer screening because of a lack of time, money, or anxiety. It's hard to think about cancer screening or prioritizing it when you're feeling healthy, but cervical cancer screening is a crucial part of staying healthy. Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, cervical cancer, also known as cancer of the cervix, affects us disproportionately as Black and Latina women who have a nearly 40% higher incidence than white women. Latinas, and especially immigrant women who have been in the country for less than ten years, face different barriers, such as lack of health insurance or transportation to health care facilities, that make it difficult for them to access the health care they need to prevent and treat cervical cancer. In 2018, the American Cancer Society reported that 2,400 Hispanic women were diagnosed with cervical can-

ENGLISH cer and 600 died from it. According to experts, 80% of these deaths can be prevented just by getting timely HPC and Pap tests. Although symptoms of cervical cancer are hard to notice, the tests can detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous, but once cervical cancer is detected, the first signs are • Abnormal bleeding, spotting or discharge • Menstrual periods with heavier than normal flow • Bleeding after sex Screening tests are simple and fast. These screening tests are crucial for everyone to live the full and healthy life they deserve. Cervical cancer screening tests are used to detect abnormal cells on the cervix that could cause cancer. The Pap test and HPV test are two kinds of medical tests for cervical cancer. A new study shows that the vaccine is effective up to age 45. That's why Planned Parenthood recommends that everyone between the ages of 9 and 45 receive the HPV vaccine to protect against genital warts and the different types of HPV that can cause cancer. We recommend that young people get the vaccine at age 11 or 12, so they are fully protected years before they become sexually active. Reproductive and sexual care is not a privilege. Part of our work at Planned Parenthood is to ensure that our community has access to lifesaving health care because reproductive and sexual health care is not a privilege - it is a basic human right. Reproductive health care is medical care, and that means all people should be able to access it, no matter what. Make an appointment today with your doctor for your annual check-up. Es difícil pensar en la detección de cáncer o darle prioridad cuando uno se siente saludable, pero las pruebas de detección del cáncer de cuello uterino son una parte crucial para mantenernos saludables. However, Republican political tribalism seems to insist on ruling out any solid facts, no matter how transparent they may be. A new document obtained by the New York Times shows how, on top of everything else we already know, former National Security Advisor to the Trump administration, John Bolton, was an eyewitness to the Ukraine affair. According to a draft of the book that Bolton intends to publish with his account of his experience in the administration, Trump reportedly told him in August that he "wanted to continue to freeze $391 million" in congressionally authorized aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russia "until officials there helped with investigations into Democrats.”

This is further evidence of the existence of a quid pro quo, that is, a bribe mechanism in exchange for a personal favor, of direct importance to the third presidential impeachment in the country's history, contradicting the defense of Trump and his lawyers that the president would have blocked the aid because of doubts about alleged corruption in Ukraine. The document goes a little further and recounts how Secretary of State Mike Pompeo privately acknowledged that there was “no basis to claims by the president’s lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani that the ambassador to Ukraine was corrupt and believed Mr. Giuliani may have been acting on behalf of other clients.” The revelation of Bolton's book is critical to the process of removing the president from office, especially when the Senate has not yet decided whether to
call witnesses to the process or not, with the former advisor being a key piece of evidence that continues to emerge on a daily basis. Last week, Giuliani's former partner, Lev Parnas, delivered through his lawyer a one-hour recording of a private dinner with President Trump on April 30, 2018, where a strategy was already being discussed with Ukraine, according to ABC News. On the audio, Parnas can be heard saying: “The biggest problem there, I think where we need to start is we gotta get rid of the ambassador,” referring to Marie Yovanovitch, who was fired from her post in the embassy, a seat she had been holding since the Reagan administration. In response to Parnas, you can hear President Trump say, "Get rid of her! Get her out tomorrow. I don't care. Get her out tomorrow. Take her out. OK? Do it." These two new pieces of evidence, like all of the documentation gathered by the House of Representatives, completely dismantle the argument of the president, his lawyers and his defenders about his innocence in the face of accusations of abuse of power. However, in the face of the Republican radicalism, we have seen during the days of the Senate impeachment, we might anticipate that no evidence will be sufficient for Republicans to put the country first.

ast Friday night was the last time anyone saw Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre alive. After not returning home from a night out at a bar, Cabanillas’ friends reported her missing on social media the next day. Early that morning, around 3 a.m., a woman’s body was discovered near Mercado Juárez, a public market in downtown Ciudad Juárez. The posts from her friends helped authorities identify the body as Cabanillas. She was found shot to death, lying next to her signature bicycle. Two shell casings were also found at the scene and there were

l pasado viernes por la noche fue la última vez que alguien vio a Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre con vida. Tras no regresar a casa de un bar aquella noche, los amigos de Cabanillas denunciaron su desaparición en las redes sociales al día siguiente. Temprano esa mañana, alrededor de las 3 a.m., el cadáver de una mujer fue descubierto cerca del Mercado Juárez, un mercado público en el centro de Ciudad Juárez. Los mensajes de sus amigos ayudaron a las autoridades a identificar el cuerpo como Cabanillas. Fue hallada muerta a tiros, tendida junto a su bicicleta. También se encontraron dos casquillos de bala en la escena y había cámaras en el área donde se descubrió el cuerpo. In addition to canvas, Cabanillas also put her work in several public displays and sold her art as designs on t-shirts and other articles of clothing. As an activist, her art often intersected with the struggles of migrants making their way to the nearby U.S.-Mexico border and women in Mexico. She also helped promote or organize many actions supporting migrants and women, including warm-clothing drives, benefit concerts and marches. Cabanillas was a member of a local feminist collective, “Las Hijas de su Maquilera Madre” (Daughters of Maquila Working Mothers). The name honors the countless women who work in the factories that came to border

towns and cities in Mexico after 1994. That year, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, opening the door for many American corporations to build factories south of the border and take advantage of cheaper labor. In Ciudad Juárez, many of the women work within clothing factories. When Cabanillas’ death hit the presses, it set off a new wave of protests against femicide and authorities that has begun to ripple across Mexico. Many of the early demonstrations have been led by family or friends of the young artist and activist. The first major protest happened just a three-minute bike ride south of where Cabanillas was found on Sunday, Jan. 19, in front of the Benito Juárez Monument in downtown Ciudad Juárez. Protestors came out in force with signs decrying the indifference shown by leaders like Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Governor of
Chihuahua, Javier Corral regarding Cabanillas’ fate. “Corral, AMLO [Andrés Manuel López Obrador], Cabada have blood on their hands” and “Isabel Cabanillas, your death will be avenged” were some of the messages displayed alongside some of Cabanillas’ artwork. On Tuesday, Jan. 21, a similar protest took place in Mexico City and a nationwide march is scheduled for Jan. 25. “Up to this point we don’t have any answer as to what happened. In spite of there being cameras in the area where they found her body, the government hasn’t said anything. We think the government is covering for someone important,” a friend of Cabanillas told La Jornada. On social media, the hashtag #JusticiaParaIsabel has trended across Latin America. According to DW, at least 3,080 women were murdered in Mexico between 2015 and June 2019. In 2015, the victim rate per 100,000 was 0.66, but has almost doubled in three years to 1.19. Cabanillas’ case remains unsolved.

tudying programming, big data or artificial intelligence could be an option for Latino students with technological skills from two Washington public schools, according to El Tiempo Latino. The students will receive training in new technologies thanks to the Verizon-benefited fund that has been awarded to the Latino Student Fund (LSF), a non-profit organization that works to support education within the Latino community. According to the source, the donation was given to the LSF's board of directors by Verizon's Director of Government and External Relations, Mario Acosta-Vélez, who explained that the goal of this fund is to provide a boost for students with skills and talents in technology careers. For Verizon, it is very important to establish alliances with organizations that support education, so that the doors of the company can be opened and the selected students can be trained at a practical level. The mobile phone and Internet company gave the organization $100,000 to start working with the 120 students selected in the "Careers of the Future" program. For her part, the director of LSF, María Fernanda Borja, explained that the $100,000 received will be implemented in their high school programs. "We're going to teach the young people what the careers of the future are, such as mathematics, chemistry, and technological disciplines, to see where they can apply and prepare for their studies now," Borja said. Starting out as the most diverse race in history, the Democratic primary once again settled on a handful of white candidates. But those who fought for the support of the Democratic machine achieved just as much, if not more than those who were left in the final stretch. Among them is Julián Castro, former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and former mayor of San Antonio — the only Latino in the race and the candidate who

Julián Castro was born in 1974 in San Antonio, Texas, to Mexican-American parents. He completed his law degree with honors at Stanford and Harvard Universities between 1996 and 2000, and at age 26 he became the youngest elected councilman in San Antonio's history. In 2009, he also became the youngest elected mayor of major cities in the United States. His political work has focused on implementing a vision of economic growth while raising the quality of life of its citizens. Castro has also worked in community service with associations such as Family Services and has taught courses at the University of Texas. Julián Castro made his appearance on the national scene when he entered Hillary Clinton's list of potential running mates for 2016, and later when he was one of the guest speakers for the New Hampshire Young Democrats 2018 Granite Slate Awards Dinner, where he was promoted as "a rising national star of the Democratic Party.”
LOOKING OUT OVER PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE
Although Castro had not made any public statements regarding his intentions to run for president at the time, he eventually "fanned the flames" by forming a Political Action Committee (better known as PAC) under the title "Opportunity First". In an interview with NBC, the young politician said his goal was "to help elected Democrats win seats in state legislatures and help the party regain a majority in Congress.” For Castro, the immediate job was to "expand Democratic control at the state and federal level" in a country where Donald Trump sits in the White House. "This guy is taking the country in a completely wrong direction and is hurting people along the way," he said. "I have a completely different view of the country and this seems to be an important time to turn things around.”

But the work that needs to be done before launching a campaign platform is hard. As Castro explained to NBC during his interview, "It's not enough not to have Donald Trump. We need a positive vision of the future of the country," he said, with regard to the possible reelection of the current president. "I can assure you that in 2020 the American people will be looking for a new generation of leadership.” During the 2018 midterm elections, Castro spoke with Rolling Stone about his vision for the country, his perspective on the mistakes made in the 2016 elections and the changes needed to set the nation on a new course. "I have a strong vision for the country," he said. "I believe our country is going in the opposite direction and that it needs new leadership.” Castro echoes the slogan he has coined for the past six years about "always going forward," a stance that connects directly to his grandmother's journey as an immigrant in the country, and represents the "optimism" typical of those who seek to move in the opposite direction from that which causes them to stagnate. "The story of many vulnerable communities over the years has been that there are more and more opportunities to move forward," he explained. "We don't want to go backwards, and that's what we seem to be doing now.”

We are ready to keep our promises and we are not going to wait. We are going to work," the former mayor of San Antonio said in a video released by his committee. "That's why I'm exploring a candidacy for president of the United States in 2020," he added. Castro began to echo his vision on issues of national debate, such as a Medicare for All, the importance of access to education and taxes for the wealthy. It was the first time the community saw "one of its own" in the race: a grandson of an immigrant, an activist with first-hand experience of what it means FEBRUARY 5 - 12, 2020
to emerge from below in a country like the United States.

ENGLISH While American political traditionalism means that all candidates make a pilgrimage to Iowa once they have decided to seek the presidency, Castro decided to break with the pattern and travel first to the island of Puerto Rico. "I want the people of Puerto Rico to know this," Castro said during his visit. "If I am elected president, I will work every day to make sure that [the island] will not only recover, but also prosper, be respected and count.” This gesture set the tone for the rest of his campaign, an odyssey where the former San Antonio mayor has had to maintain a balance between the weight of his ethnic background and the value of his political proposals. After countless interviews and public appearances, the candidate drew up his road map and outlined what he would do if elected president. Among his proposals were support for free trade, an energy strategy that includes fossil fuels, respect for the LGBTQ+ community, and free choice regarding abortion. The vast majority of Democratic candidates were then more or less considering all of these options. However, there are a few issues that only Castro brought to the table:

Castro insisted during his campaign that "cruelty is not the solution" to the migration problem, as the Trump administration put it. Making frequent references to his family history, the candidate always made the distinction between a functioning immigration system and the radical anti-immigrant campaign. "Yes, we need to have border security, but there is a smart and humane way to do it," he said in his inaugural campaign speech. "And there is no way in this world that locking up babies is a smart, good or right way to do it. We say 'no' to building a wall and 'yes' to building community.” • His ideas were later merged into his "People First Immigration Policy" project, where he described the priorities for the country: • Reforming the immigration system to include: a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who have made a life in the country, modernizing the visa system, and reversing the radical changes instituted by the Trump administration (such as immigration bans or citizen denaturalization systems). • A "humane border" policy, which would return to the classification of illegal border crossing as a civil offense rather than a criminal one, and thus prevent the separation of families, and stop the private prison industry from continuing to profit from the suffering of immigrant families. • Reconstitute the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE). • Establish a 21st century Marshall Plan for

ENGLISH Central America that includes modernization of diplomacy, high standards of governance, transparency and anti-corruption campaigns, thus improving the conditions which have forced many Central Americans to flee to the U.S. border. While his Democratic opponents highlighted health care or the minimum wage, and overlooked this issue, Castro decided to confront the Republican discourse and retake control of the immigration narrative from the perspective of those who know first hand what being an immigrant means.
THE DREAM COMES TO AN END
"If I don't make it to the next phase of debates, we will not be able to hold a campaign that reaches Iowa in February," former Housing Secretary Julian Castro's campaign told supporters in an email during October 2019. "My presidential campaign urgently needs financial resources to continue," he added. Despite being one of the few candidates with solid and feasible proposals in the race for the Democratic nomination, recent polls placed him in the 1% range of potential Democratic voters. In order to boost his campaign in key states and turn this trend around, his team urgently needed funds. FEBRUARY 5 - 12, 2020

Sus ideas se fusionaron posteriormente en su proyecto “People First Immigration Policy”, donde describía las prioridades para el país: • Reformar el sistema de inmigración y que incluyera: una vía a la ciudadanía para los indocumentados que habían hecho vida en el país, modernizar el sistema de visas y revertir los cambios radicales instaurados por la Administración Trump (como vetos migratorios o sistemas de desnaturalización de ciudadanos). • Una política de “frontera humana”, que volviera a la catalogación del cruce ilegal fronterizo como una falta civil y no criminal; evitar así la separación de familias y que la industria de prisiones privadas se siguiera lucrando a través del sufrimiento de familias inmigrantes. • Reconstituir la Agencia de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE).
• Establecer un Plan Marshall del siglo XXI para Centroamérica que incluyera la modernización de la diplomacia, altos estándares de gobierno, transparencia y campañas anticorrupción, mejorando así las condiciones de vida de quienes huyen hacia la frontera estadounidense. Mientras sus contrincantes demócratas resaltaban la atención médica o el salario mínimo y pasaban por alto este asunto, Castro decidió oponerse de frente al discurso republicano y retomar el control de la narrativa migratoria desde la perspectiva de quienes realmente saben del asunto.

"Unfortunately, we do not see a path to victory that does not include reaching the debate stage in November, and without a significant increase in our fundraising, we will not be able to reach that debate.” Although it was known it could happen at any time, the announcement that Julian Castro was withdrawing from the Democratic primary was a major blow to those closely watching his trajectory. retary and former mayor of San Antonio announced "with deep gratitude to all our supporters" that he was suspending his campaign for the presidency. "I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together," he added. "I will continue to fight for an America where everyone counts. I hope you will join me in this fight.” As politics teaches us in terms of paradoxes, Castro was one of the few candidates of color in the primaries, representing the largest ethnic minority in the country today, and yet his efforts failed to propel him further in the nomination process. Always speaking from his experience as a second-generation immigrant, Castro traveled

Even though he was one of the candidates with a solid, feasible and inclusive program that left no community behind, Castro was devoured by the Democratic system, where it seems that being male and white is still the preferred route for those who do not understand that the country is ready to see a change. His struggle, however, has left a deep mark on the country, after his participation in the national debate put on the table the names of victims of police violence, racial inequality and lack of representation in the political system.
Castro's promise to "continue the struggle" was soon fulfilled. The only Latino candidate in the Democratic nomination race announced that he would endorse Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in her quest for the White House. In a message posted on Twitter, Castro said he was proud to support Warren. "Elizabeth and I share a vision of America where everyone counts," he said. "An America where the people, not the rich or well-connected, are put first. I'm proud to join her in fighting for great structural change.” Castro's support comes at a key time for Warren, who has lagged in the polls in recent weeks, following closely behind Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden. While Sanders has the support of another heavyweight Latino in national politics in New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Castro's endorsement of Warren could represent a major shift in the profile of the Democratic primary. "There is one candidate that I see who is not afraid to fight like anyone else to make sure that the promise of the United States belongs to everyone," Castro said in a video accompanying her announcement. "Mrs. Warren will make sure that no matter where you live or where your family comes from, you too have a path to opportunity.” For her part, the Massachusetts senator thanked her former opponent for his support, saying she felt honored by his endorsement. "Together we will fight to ensure that every family in America has a path to opportunity," she added in a Twitter message. Although Castro is no longer on the ballot for the primary, his sleeves are still rolled up and his hands are still working for what really matters: the future of the country.

A surreal dystopia around the mysterious cult of a Truffle Pig with strange powers that consecrated the young Texan Francisco Flores as one of the promises of the 'weird' last 2019. Is border policy a REAL dystopia?
How many borders besides the physical ones shape us? What makes us frontier subjects? Mestiza, as its title indicates, the work of the deceased Chicana and lesbian activist Gloria Anzaldua is essential to understanding the complexity of Chicana identity and gender politics. It is a mixture of essay and autobiography of unique poetics by someone who always defined herself as a "border dweller."
Despite the fact that more than 16 years separate it from the present, this classic that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize is more present today than ever before. In simple but powerful prose, Urrea recounts the story of 26 Mexican men who tried to cross the border into the U.S. in 2001 and found themselves on Arizona's inhospitable Devil's Highway. Neither the bipolar climate nor the rattlesnakes were, as you might imagine, the greatest danger they faced.
Why does it even occur to me that I can or should make art from other people's suffering?, asks herself Luiselli's latest novel protagonist, who goes into the desert to find the testimony of migrant children who have disappeared in detention centers. A stark story that puts the finger on the sore spot of Trump's migration policy, the human drama of migration and the right to asylum of the most vulnerable.

Mestiza, como su título indica, la obra de la ya fallecida activista chicana y lesbiana Gloria Anzaldúa es esencial para entender la complejidad de la identidad chicana y las políticas de género. Una mezcla de ensayo y autobiografía de singular poética de quien siempre se definió como “habitante de la frontera”.
Pese a los más de 16 años que lo separan de la actualidad, este clásico que fue nominado al Pulitzer está hoy más presente que nunca. Contado con una prosa sencilla pero impactante, Urrea recoge los sucesos ocurridos a 26 hombres mexicanos que en 2001 trataron de cruzar la frontera con U.S. y se internaron en la inhóspita Carretera del Diablo de Arizona. Ni el clima bipolar ni las serpientes de cascabel son, como ya imaginan, el mayor de los peligros a los que se enfrentaron.
“¿Y por qué se ocurre siquiera que puedo o que debo hacer arte a partir del sufrimiento ajeno?”, se pregunta la documentalista que protagoniza la última novela de Luiselli (“Los niños perdidos”), que se adentra en el desierto para buscar el testimonio de niños migrantes desaparecidos en centros de detención. Una historia descarnada que mete el dedo en la llaga en la política migratoria de Trump, el drama humano de la migración y el derecho de asilo de los más vulnerables. • 23

Perhaps the best summary of this Grammy edition can be found in the chorus of one of the most mythical songs by the Queen of Salsa: “Ay, no hay que llorar que la vida es un carnaval. It is Christmas Eve in the year of Huitzilopochtli, 1969. Three hundred Chicanos have gathered in front of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church. Three hundred brown-eyed children of the sun have come to drive the money-changers out of the richest temple in Los Angeles. It is a dark moonless night and ice-cold wind meets us at the doorstep. We carry little white candles as weapons. In pairs on the sidewalk, we trickle and bump and sing with the candles in our hands, like a bunch of cockroaches gone crazy.

hen the St. Basil's trial began, Oscar Zeta Acosta was not a mere activist, but the protesters' lawyer and one of the best-known Chicano civil rights fighters of the time alongside Cesar Chavez, the leader of the Chicano peasant movement. He was writing a history of Los Angeles, and that Christmas Eve, 1969, he was meeting in front of St. Basil's Church to claim alongside three hundred Mexican Americans that Catholicism had turned its back on poor Latinos. "We have committed ourselves to one goal: the return of the Catholic Church to the oppressed Chicano community," Richard Cruz in 1969. The way they were repressed showed that they were not wrong. They wanted to get into the midnight mass and confront the then Cardinal James Francis McIntyre with the neglect of the institution. The group was comprised of Richard Martinez and supporters of Católicos por La Raza, who linked their "Aztec" heritage to their faith in Catholicism. But when they arrived, they were met by a handful of police officers. By force, they were kept out. Martinez remembers the screaming, shouting and chants of the people with candles in their hands demanding, "Let the poor in!" Twenty people were arrested in what was called a "riot," according to LA Times archives. Half a century later, on Jan. 11, a retired Richard Martinez and other former members of Católicos por la Raza gathered at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany to commemorate the historic date.

uando el juicio de San Basilio empezó, Oscar Zeta Acosta no era un mero activista, sino el abogado de los manifestantes y uno de los luchadores de los derechos civiles chicanos más conocidos de la época junto a César Chávez, el líder del movimiento chicano campesino . Estaba escribiendo una historia de Los Ángeles y esa Nochebuena de 1969 a la que se refiere en su libro se reunía frente a la Iglesia de San Basilio, un formidable dispendio –se habían invertido más de 3 millones de dólares en su construcción– para reclamar junto a tres centenares de mexicanos americanos que el catolicismo habían dado la espalda a los pobres latinos. “Nos hemos comprometido con un objetivo: el retorno de la Iglesia Católica a la comunidad chicana oprimida”, Richard Cruz en 1969. La manera en que fueron reprimidos daba cuenta de que no se equivocaban… Querían entrar en la misa de medianoche, enfrentar al entonces cardenal James Francis McIntyre con el descuido de la institución. Eran sobre todo Richard Martínez y un grupo de partidarios de Católicos por La Raza, quienes unían su herencia “azteca” a su fe en el catolicismo. No obstante, ¿qué hacía un puñado de policías dentro de la Casa de Dios? Por la fuerza, los mantuvieron fuera; Martínez recuerda los gritos, los chillidos. Los vítores de la gente con sus velas en las manos cantando: “Dejen entrar a los pobres”. El resultado fueron 20 personas arrestadas en el tumulto, según los archivos del LA Times. ENGLISH ing, and they complained that, unlike other Christian groups such as the Presbyterians or the Baptists, Catholic leaders were rarely at the forefront of social justice movements. They had tried to meet with McIntyre before, even organizing a rally at the cardinal's residence and a prayer vigil on Thanksgiving Day. But when about 30 members of Católicos por La Raza forced their way into the cardinal's office on December 18, God's angry representative "for a few" reluctantly promised to investigate what the congregation and students were demanding. "It was the first moment in which a bold, brazen and fearless youth movement confronted the Church," Professor Felipe Hinojosa. A week later, there was still no news from McIntyre. "We have committed ourselves to one goal: the return of the Catholic Church to the oppressed Chicano community," announced the head of the organization, Richard Cruz, at a press conference. What they wanted, he said, was for the institution "to become as radical as Christ." They hoped to reform the church but were sentenced to four to six months in prison for attempting to enter the church by force during religious service. However, those who took part in the St. Basil's Protests believe that their affront led to changes in the archdiocese.

AN UNPRECEDENTED EVENT
Cardinal McIntyre retired in the early 1970s. He was succeeded by Archbishop Timothy Manning, who soon afterward met with the Chicano group and began to take action. One provided more social and educational funds to the community and another created an inter-parish council of all the churches in East Los Angeles to advise him. A year later, the nomination of the Ecuadorian-American Rev. Juan Arzube as auxiliary bishop of the city made it clear that some messengers of God are an obstacle, and others a door. According to the University of Texas professor Felipe Hinojosa, a specialist in Mexican American studies and religion, the activism of Católicos por La Raza was "the first moment in which a bold, brazen and fearless youth movement confronted the Church.” "Nothing like this has ever happened before, at least in the United States," he said. The Chicano coalition dissolved shortly after the protests against the Vietnam War organized by the so-called Chicano Moratorium Committee against the war. Following violent confrontations with the police, three people were killed, including journalist Ruben Salazar. "I hope that the energy and dynamism of the Chicano movement could be reflected in the generations that are struggling with these issues today," said Richard Martinez at the commemoration last Saturday, Jan. 11. According to the Pew Research Center, however, the number of Latino Catholics has decreased by 10% in the last decade, while the number of atheists has grown by 15%. Perhaps today more than ever we need to recover the spirit of the St. Basil's Protests. Can a shepherd who ignores his sheep really be a shepherd?

Habían tratado de reunirse con McIntyre antes, organizado incluso un piquete en la residencia cardenalicia y una vigilia de oración el día de Acción de Gracias. Tras los violentos enfrentamientos con la policía, tres personas fueron asesinadas, entre ellas el periodista Rubén Salazar. “Espero que la energía y el dinamismo que tuvo el movimiento chicano pueda reflejarse en las generaciones que están batallando con estos temas hoy”, dijo Richard Martínez en la conmemoración del pasado sábado 11. Según el Pew Reaseach Center, no obstante, el número de latinos católicos ha disminuido un 10% en la última década, mientras que el de ateos ha crecido en un 15%. Tal vez hoy más que nunca haya que recuperar el espíritu de las Protestas de San Basilio. ¿Puede un pastor que ignora a sus ovejas más negras ser realmente un pastor?

n Jan. 22, AL DÍA held its second annual Top Doctors awards ceremony, celebrating the achievements of Hispanic doctors across the city of Philadelphia. The four doctors honored were: Dr. Christian Bermudez, Director of Thoracic Transplantation and Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation and ECMO at the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Natalia Ortiz-Torrent, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine; Dr. Carmen Guerra, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania; and Dr. Victor Navarro, Gastroenterologist in the Einstein Health Network. All were chosen by a board of directors from a field of more than 60 nominees. In addition to celebrating their achievements, all four doctors had a message of hope and perseverance for the next generation of Hispanic doctors, some of whom were in attendance to watch their mentors be honored. More than 80 people were in attendance, including the families and friends of the honorees and some nominees. The event was held in the Lincoln Memorial Room at the Union League of Philadelphia.

l 22 de enero, AL DÍA llevó a cabo su segunda ceremonia anual de premios Top Doctors, celebrando los logros de los médicos hispanos en toda la ciudad de Filadelfia. Los cuatro doctores honrados fueron: El Dr. Christian Bermúdez, Director de Transplante Torácico y Director Quirúrgico de Transplante Pulmonar y ECMO de la Universidad de Pennsylvania; la Dra. s this going to be, finally, the decade of Latinos? After being rescheduled a couple of times, this year might be the year, at least in terms of electoral politics. There is clear evidence, stronger than ever, to suggest that Latino voters can determine who the next president of the United States is going to be. According to very serious analysis from credible U.S. institutions, absent from our general media, we might be at the beginning of a transformational moment in U.S. politics, under the influence of the steady growth of voters of Latino descent who are expected to participate in this presidential election. Not only during the primary election season that started this week, but, more importantly, in the general election, which will elect the next president of the United States. Take the basic facts recently revealed by the Pew Research Center, yet to be picked up by any media in America: For this year’s elections, a record 32 million of U.S. citizens of Latino descent will be eligible to vote, exceeding for the first time in the history of the country the number of African-American voters. Not only there are more eligible voters —5 million more than three years ago— but they have already declared, in a survey conducted by Pew, that they are very enthusiastic about participating in this year's presidential election: 43% among Democrats, and 46% among Republicans. Latino voters have the opportunity to influence presidential election this year also because of the changes in the primaries calendar: California,
where the largest concentration of Latino voters reside (7.9 million), moved its primary election three months earlier, making it part of the crucial Super Tuesday, on March 3. Same as Texas, which commands the second largest number of Latino voters (5.6 million), and can make a splash nationwide with their results. States like Nevada and Pennsylvania have fewer registered Latino voters (both over 400,000) — enough, however, to tip a primary or a general election. In Pennsylvania three years ago, for example, the margin of victory in the general election was only 44,292 votes between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. In Pennsylvania, where she was triumphantly nominated by her party and everybody thought she would be the next president, Hillary Clinton basically lost by that slim margin of popular vote 20 of the 38 electoral college votes she needed at that point to become president of the United States. Today, more than ever, the price of overlooking the Latino vote can be that high.
