Andrés Ramírez Pulido (Bogotá, 1989) did not choose the department of Tolima to shoot his first feature film. Tolima chose him. And so it is that this mountainous, naturally seductive and wild-sounding area, nestled in the centre-west of Colombia, became the setting for La Jauría.

In this 86-minute film, the filmmaker fills a pressing need to portray a generation of young people stalked by violence in Ibagué, the capital of this Colombian region. To do so, he tells the story of Eliú, played by Jhojan Estiven Jiménez, a young man who, besieged by desolation and resentment, decides to commit a murder, that of his own father. But he makes a mistake and ends up taking the life of another man.

The crime leads him to face a sentence in an experimental rehabilitation centre located in the middle of the jungle. Surrounded by other teenagers of the same condition, Eliú tries to escape the ghosts of the past, although his intention is cut short by the unexpected arrival of an old acquaintance: El Mono (Maicol Andrés Jiménez), his best friend and accomplice.

“Making the previous short films (El Edén y Damiana) that I have and the feature film, I have discovered that one of my personal concerns as director is how the father figure influences us as children and adolescents, how he marks our lives, whether it is his love or abandonment, his violence or protection. And before making La Jauría, in the process of making short films, I met boys in prison for different reasons: one of them is for their consumption of psychoactive substances, others for minor crimes, and so I realised that many of them are men who have conflictive relationships with their fathers, who don’t want to know anything, who treat them badly. In that moment, I began to explore why and where this common denominator comes from. By living with them in those spaces and with that question, La Jauría begins the process”, the director told AL DÍA

Making History In Cannes

Shot in late 2021, and going through a marathon post-production process, the Colombian film debuted in 2022 at one of

the most prestigious film festivals in the world: Cannes. The premiere was better than expected: the production won the Grand Prize at the Semaine de la Critique, making Ramírez Pulido the first Colombian director to win this award. At the same festival, La Jauría won the Prix SACD, awarded by the Society of French Authors.

“I think that making a strong film that I was passionate about and taking risky decisions led us to stand out at Cannes”, said the director, still surprised by the great reception of his debut feature in France.

Conquering Spanish Cinema

After screening in Melbourne, Jerusalem, Biarritz, San Sebastian and Toronto, the film has been nominated in the Best Ibero-American Film category at the Goya Awards, presented by the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Colombian feature film will compete against 1976, from Chile; Argentina, 1985, from Argentina; Noche de fuego, from Mexico; and Utama, from Bolivia. The winner will be announced at a gala on Saturday 11th February, in the Spanish city of Seville.

Y es así que esta zona montañosa, naturalmente seductora y con sonidos salvajes enclavada en el centro-oeste de Colombia se convirtió en el escenario de La Jauría.

En esta película, de 86 minutos de duración, el cineasta aplaca una necesidad imperiosa de retratar a una generación de jóvenes acechados por la violencia en Ibagué, la capital de esta región colombiana. Para ello, expone la historia de Eliú, personaje interpretado por Jhojan Estiven Jiménez, un joven que, asediado por la desolación y el rencor, decide cometer un asesinato, el de su propio padre. Aunque no acierta y termina arrebatándole la vida a otro hombre.

El crimen lo lleva a cumplir una condena en un centro de rehabilitación experimental localizado en medio de la selva. Rodeado de otros adolescentes de su misma condición, Eliú intenta escapar de los fantasmas del pasado, aunque su intención se ve truncada por la llegada inesperada de un viejo conocido: El Mono (Maicol Andrés Jiménez), su mejor amigo y cómplice.

“Haciendo los cortos previos (El Edén y Damiana) que tengo y el largometraje, he descubierto que una de mis inquietudes personales como director es cómo nos influencia la figura paterna desde niños y adolescentes, cómo nos marca la vida, ya sea su amor o abandono, su violencia o protección. Y antes de hacer La Jauría, en el proceso de hacer cortos, encontré a chicos en reclusión por diferentes factores: uno de ellos es por su consumo de sustancias psicoactivas, otros por delitos menores y así me doy cuenta de que muchos son hombres que tienen relación conflictiva con sus padres, que no quieren saber nada, los tratan mal. Y ahí empecé a explorar por qué viene y de dónde viene ese común denominador. Al convivir con ellos en esos espacios y con esa pregunta, La Jauría se empieza a cocinar”, dijo el director a AL DÍA

Haciendo Historia En Cannes

Rodada a finales de 2021 y pasando por un proceso de postproducción maratónico, la cinta colombiana debutó en 2022 en uno de los festivales de cine más prestigiosos del mundo: Cannes. El estreno fue mejor de lo esperado: la producción ganó el Grand Prize en la Semaine de la Critique, lo que convirtió a Ramírez Pulido en el primer director colombiano en alzarse con este galardón. En el mismo festival, La Jauría obtuvo el Prix SACD otorgado por la Sociedad de Autores Franceses.

“Creo que hacer una película fuerte, que me apasionara y tomar decisiones arriesgadas nos llevó a sobresalir en Cannes”, comentó el realizador aún sorprendido por la gran acogida de su ópera prima en Francia.

A La Conquista Del Cine Espa Ol

Después de proyectarse en Melbourne, Jerusalén, Biarritz, San Sebastián y Toronto, la cinta ha sido nominada en la categoría Mejor Película Iberoamericana de los Premios Goya, entregados por la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España.

El largometraje colombiano competirá contra ‘1976’, de Chile; ‘Argentina, 1985’, de Argentina; ‘Noche de fuego’, de México, y ‘Utama’, de Bolivia. El ganador se dará a conocer durante una gala que se celebrará este sábado 11 de febrero en la ciudad española de Sevilla.

Se espera que pronto La Jauría pueda verse en los cines comerciales de los Estados Unidos y plataformas de streaming. z
