eronica Morales and her daughter Nataly came to the United States 21 years ago in search of a better future. They came from the small town of El Mezquital, in the state of Durango in Mexico, where 65 % of its inhabitants live in extreme poverty. The story of Nataly and her mother is the central story of this edition. They tell how they got there and what they have done so far. The news is that Nataly has just graduated with a master’s degree in Education from Harvard University, which makes her the first in her family to make it this far in her educational process. That is the merit. Nataly, 26, applied to Harvard and was accepted along with about 2,000 students among more than 50,000 seeking to study there. Last May was her graduation. At the end of the ceremony she put the cap and gown on her mom and recorded a video in which she said: “We graduated from Harvard, Mom”. She uploaded it to LinkedIn and it went viral. “Out of the blue I thought of everything my mom has sacrificed and all the examples she has given me to become the first in the family to get a college education here in the United States”, Nataly proudly told AL DÍA. That momentum and the response of those who watched the video have allowed her to be invited to give talks at companies and organizations and to Latino students who share the dream of entering higher education. Veronica crossed the border when she was 28 years old and Nataly was only 5. Since then she has not stopped working to make a better life for herself. For the past 12 years she has worked in the poultry industry, in a factory very close to her home in Gainesville, Georgia. “We came to the United States because we were very poor in El Mezquital. We were looking for more opportunities for Nataly, so that she could study and get ahead”, Verónica told AL DÍA. Indeed, Nataly graduated from Chestatee High School in Georgia with a degree in Secondary Education. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Georgia.

erónica Morales y su hija Nataly llegaron hace 21 años a Estados Unidos en busca de un mejor futuro. Llegaron del pueblito de El Mezquital, del estado de Durango en México, donde el 65% de sus habitantes viven en extrema pobreza. La historia de Nataly y su mamá es la historia central de esta edición. En ella cuentan cómo llegaron y qué han hecho hasta hoy. La noticia es que Nataly se acaba de graduar en una maestría en Educación de la Universidad de Harvard, convirtiéndose en la primera de la familia en lograr llegar hasta este punto en su proceso educativo. Ese es el mérito. Nataly, de 26 años, se había inscrito en Harvard y fue aceptada junto a unos 2.000 estudiantes entre más de 50.000 que buscan estudiar allí. En mayo pasado fue la graduación. Al final de la ceremonia le puso la toga y el birrete a su mamá y grabó un video en el que decía: “Nos graduamos en Harvard, mamá”, lo subió a Linkendin y de volvió viral. “De la nada pensé en todo lo que mi mamá ha sacrificado y todos los ejemplos que me ha dado para llegar a ser la primera en la familia en obtener una educación universitaria aquí en los Estados Unidos”, le contó con orgullo a AL DÍA. Ese impulso y la respuesta de quienes vieron el video le ha permitido que la inviten a dictar charlas en empresas y organizaciones y a estudiantes latinos que tienen el mismo sueño de ingresar a la educación superior. Verónica pasó la frontera cuando tenía 28 años y Nataly apenas 5. Desde entonces no ha parado de trabajar para tener una vida mejor. En los últimos 12 años ha trabajado en la industria avícola, en una fábrica muy cerca de su casa en Gainesville (Georgia). “Vinimos a los Estados Unidos porque en El Mezquital estábamos muy pobres. Estábamos buscando más oportunidades para Nataly, para que ella estudiara y saliera adelante”, le contó Verónica a AL DÍA. Efectivamente, Nataly se graduó en educación secundaria en la Chestatee High School, en Georgia. Después hizo la licenciatura en la Universidad de Georgia del Norte.

ristina Martinez’s journey from living in Capulhuac, Central Mexico, to becoming a James Beard award-winning chef has been a long and fulfilling one. Martinez grew up seeing her parents cook in the kitchen to make hearty, deep-flavored, barbacoa, beginning to learn how to use the cooking methods her parents used at a young age. “I knew I wanted to become a chef when I was six years old,” Martinez said in an interview with AL DÍA News. “I started working at six and I always loved it. I grew into understanding professionalism along the way.” She has now become an established, well-known chef in Philadelphia and around the country from her work in South Philly Barbacoa, using those same techniques that she learned in Mexico. After winning The James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic on June 13, Martinez noted that she is grateful that her talent is showcased on a larger scale. “I am proud to represent the tradition of my hometown and the state of my family. I have the honor of representing that to the American audience,” Martinez said. However, she added that with newfound acknowledgement comes more obligations. “It’s a great responsibility because I know that I am going to receive new people and new customers so I have to maintain a standard,” said Martinez.

Martínez se ha convertido en una chef consolidada y conocida en Filadelfia y en todo el país por su trabajo en South Philly Barbacoa, donde utiliza las mismas técnicas que aprendió en México. Después de ganar el premio James Beard a la mejor chef del Atlántico Medio, el 13 de junio, Martínez señaló su agradecimiento porque su talento se muestre a mayor escala. “Tengo el honor de representar la tradición de mi ciudad natal y del estado de mi familia ante el público estadounidense. Estoy orgullosa de ello”, dijo. fter the Pennsylvania state legislature had already missed its June 30 deadline by almost a week to pass a state budget and send it on the Governor Tom Wolf, Republicans in the State Senate pushed through a last-minute, middle-of-thenight constitutional amendment that would add language banning abortion in the state. The reaction from Democrats was universal disdain at both what the amendment means and the manner in which it was passed — last-minute, with the budget still unresolved, and af-

ter forcing a further extension into the night to vote. “Sad day in the history of our state,” wrote Rep. Danilo Burgos on Twitter. Proposed constitutional amendments must pass both chambers of the legislature during a two-year legislative session before being put to the voters that have the final say at the ballot box. In an impassioned speech given by Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta on the night the amendment passed, he called out the hypocrisy of Republicans for wanting to trust voters on abortion given the events surrounding the 2020 election,

The abortion amendment, officially called the Abortion Control Act, passed both chambers at the end of its first twoyear session. Should Republicans want to get it on the ballot during the 2023-2024 session, they must advertise it at least three months ahead of this year’s Nov. 8 election. On that timeline, the outreach must start next month. Constitutional amendments also cannot be vetoed by the governor, likely the reason why Republicans in the legislature are going this route to get an abortion ban in place. Not even a week after the amendment passed the legislature, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued an executive order protecting abortions in the state and protections for those traveling to the state for the procedure. But Wolf won’t be governor come 2023. That will either be Attorney General Josh Shapiro or State Senator Doug Mastriano. Theirs is one of two PA contests that will have the nation’s attention in November. The amendment push could be a sign for how confident PA Republicans are in their candidate, Mastriano, who has led a campaign that’s stuck to the far right, maybe too far right to actually win in the state. Most polls have Shapiro with a three or four percentage point lead, and some Republicans recently formed their own PAC in Shapiro’s favor. The Attorney General has also taken the abortion issue and ran with it after the overturn of Roe v. Wade, blasting Mastriano for his hardline stance on the procedure, even in cases of rape or incest. It’s not to say Shapiro has it in the bag, but by potentially pushing the abortion ballot measure to an off election year like 2023, Republicans are betting on low turnout to get an Election Day victory.

s the House Select Committee To Investigate Jan. 6 continues to unravel more of the story that led up to the bloody day on Capitol Hill, the speculations around whether or not the day’s events were an attempted coup have transformed into confident statements of fact. With every new testimony and piece of evidence revealed — while not executed particularly well — it seems more and more likely that there was some serious discussion by those in then-President Donald Trump’s inner circle to do whatever it took to keep him in power. That includes inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol that turned deadly. But one former member of Trump’s cabinet that doesn’t see it that way is former National Security Advisor John Bolton, and he said so in a recent interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s The Lead. “That’s not the way Donald Trump does things,” Bolton said. “It’s rambling from one half, vast idea to another, one plan that falls through and another comes up — that’s what he was doing.” Bolton’s defense of Trump is not a flattering one. He was one of the many members of Trump’s administration to leave before its time in power was over, and he went on to publish a book (also like many others) about his experiences. It’s what appears in that book — a memoir published in 2020 called The Room Where It Happened — that made Bolton’s conversation with Tapper take a concerning turn when discussing coups.

Él divaga entre una idea y otra; de un plan que se cae, pasa a otro, eso era lo que hacía”. La defensa de Bolton de Trump no es halagadora. Fue uno de los muchos miembros de su administración que se marchó antes de que terminara su etapa en el poder. Como muchos, Bolton publicó un libro sobre sus experiencias con Trump; se trata de unas memorias publicadas en 2020 tituladas The Room Where It Happened. Bolton’s book came into play after Tapper followed up to the previous statement, asking whether any of the coups he planned were “successful.” His response pointed to a part of the book that detailed the U.S.’s unsuccessful support of a 2020 coup that tried to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power. At the time, the U.S. recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the country’s real president in the aftermath of elections. It was also a departure from what Bolton said at the time, denying it was a coup attempt. Known as Operation Gideon, the paltry attempt from Venezuelan dissidents
and U.S. private military contractor Silvercorp USA to overthrow the government of an entire country included just 60 men arriving in two boats. But while the Venezuela coup attempt was the only one Bolton acknowledged on air and in his book, it’s likely not the only one he helped along.

In the same year of Venezuela’s elections, Bolivia was also going through its own crisis that led to the resignation of popular leftist President Evo Morales. Jeanine Áñez assumed the presidency with U.S. support and launched a witch hunt of anyone associated with Morales’ Movement for Socialism Party. She also warmed relations with the U.S. Áñez’s reign only lasted a year, as she withdrew before new elections were held

El mismo año de las elecciones en Venezuela, Bolivia también atravesaba su propia crisis, la que condujo a la dimisión del popular presidente de izquierda Evo Morales. Jeanine Áñez asumió la presidencia con el apoyo de Estados Unidos y puso en marcha una cacería de brujas contra cualquier persona relacionada con el partido Movimiento por el Socialismo de Morales. n a plane bound for El Mezquital (Mexico), Nataly Morales and her mother, Veronica Morales, received the great news. In her inbox, Nataly had the admissions notification confirming her acceptance to Harvard University, where an average of 50,000 people apply. However, only about 2,000 students are accepted each year, and, currently, 12.5% of the students who make up the class of 2025 are Hispanic.
ENGLISH “Do you remember, Mommy?” The young woman asked Veronica during the interview with AL DÍA. “Do you remember that we cried, that we shed tears and then hugged each other?”, continued Nataly, addressing Veronica, who was wearing a T-shirt that read “Harvard Mom”. Nataly started her master’s classes during the pandemic, so her first semester was entirely online. At that time, her father was diagnosed with terminal cirrhosis. After years without direct contact with him, Nataly and Ve-

In front of the long steps of Harvard, the young woman put her cap and gown on Veronica while being filmed by her aunt. Nataly uploaded the video to Linkedin and, immediately, it went viral. “We graduated from Harvard, Mom”, she said on the recording. Currently, the post has 43,346 reactions and has been shared 720 times. Since then, Nataly has been invited by several companies and organizations to give lectures and talks to Latino students interested in higher education. “I was just doing my photo shoot when out of nowhere I thought of all that my mom has sacrificed and all the examples she has given me to become the first in the family to get a college education here in the United States”, said the recent graduate. Nataly knew she wanted to be part of the Harvard Education program as soon as she attended the Latina Empowerment and Development conference, whose purpose is to motivate and raise awareness of the impact of Latina women in the professional world. The creation of educational gatherings like these helps more young Latinos establish networks and contacts for the benefit of their higher education.
“MY MOM HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY INSPIRATION”
El Mezquital is a municipality located in southwestern Mexico, specifically in the state of Durango. It has more than 40,000 inhabitants and 800 villages. But in the “little town” where Nataly was born there are only a few left. Of the 3,000 people who live there,
THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY “When I was having a super stressful day at school, I would always think to myself that if my mom could risk her life crossing the border, how can I not be able to apply to college?”, said Nataly. For both the young woman and her mother, education is a priority. So do 83 % of Latinos, who see education as a core issue for their community and family, according to data from the Hispanic Star. By 2029, Latino student enrollment is projected to increase to 14 million. Currently, 25 % of Latinos are college educated, while 50 % of Latino students are the first in their families to go to college.
Nataly confesses that a large number emigrated to the United States out of economic necessity and in search of better professional and educational opportunities for their families. Data Mexico statistics states that by 2020, 65 % of the population of El Mezquital was living in extreme poverty. Nataly’s mother also decided to leave her life in El Mezquital to hurdle one of the most dangerous barriers: crossing the border. She did so at the age of 28, as a single mother with no knowledge of English, while Nataly was a 5-year-old girl. Since then, Veronica has worked very hard to put bread on the table. Like many immigrants in different states, she has been working for 12 years in the poultry industry, also known as poultry farms. She gets up every day at 4 a.m. to get ready and

go to work at the factory about 5 minutes from her home in Gainesville, Georgia. After spending hours processing chickens, which sometimes exceeds 10 hours of work, she gets back home to do housework and go to bed at 8 p.m., just enough time to rest and get back to work the next day. According to the Economy Police Institute, 50 % of the people who work in chicken processing in the United States are Mexican descent and, mostly, immigrants.

“We came to the United States because we were very poor in El Mezquital. We were looking for more opportunities for Nataly, for her to study and get ahead”, said Verónica in an interview with AL DÍA. And so it has been. Since Nataly began her studies, she has stood out for her leadership and interest in higher education. First, she obtained her high school education at Chestatee High

But unfortunately, sometimes it is difficult for us because of the lack of economic support, because you are the first in your family to get a college education, because you are the child of immigrant parents, or even because of the lack of representation of Hispanic professors and administrators. 16 •

HIGHER EDUCATION FUTURE PLANS Nataly will soon launch an education consulting agency to help more Latinos get into college. She will also begin offering translation services and motivational speeches. To preserve her Mexican roots, Nataly will work with a group of local artisans to make and customize the stoles of the graduation gowns with details referring to Mexican culture and tradition.
School in Georgia. Then, she chose to pursue her bachelor’s degree at the University of North Georgia, becoming the first generation in her family to go to college. She managed to travel to Peru and Spain as a scholarship student and mentor Latino and first-generation students so they could study abroad on an all-expenses-paid basis. But what really changed her life was the internship she did in the U.S. Congress as part of the Congressional Caucus Hispanic Institute’s initiatives to increase Latino student representation in the Legislative. “It was an experience that helped me a lot and it was wonderful. However, I felt small and I was like ‘What am I doing here? What do I have to contribute to this big institution of Government?’. I didn’t know how to network and I didn’t feel represented because in Congress most of our senators are white and that’s where I got that fear and imposter syndrome. But when I was afraid I realized that I did have the experience, that the barriers I have faced are very valuable and that I have to continue advocating for my Latino community, for myself and for not being afraid to be who I really am”, said the 26-year-old. Just two months ago, Nataly completed her studies at Harvard, where she got a master’s degree focused on educational administration and university development. In addition, she completed a certification in English-Spanish translation. Although before obtaining the certification, Nataly was already helping her mom translate and interpret what she was told at doctor’s appointments, legal documents and daily errands. “I am very thankful that during all this time, my mom has talked to me about the importance of keeping Spanish and the culture. She doesn’t want me to

forget Spanish and I feel she has done a very good job. To this day, I don’t forget it. When I was 5 years old and in kindergarten, the first challenge I had was that my name was pronounced differently in English. At first I didn’t respond to the teacher because I wasn’t used to hearing my name that way. But there was a point where I got frustrated, I got angry and yelled at my teacher: ‘I didn’t call myself that! My name is Nataly!’”, the young girl revealed about the language barriers faced by English Language Learners (ELL) when they arrive in the country. Nataly also had no Latino professors until she came to Harvard. This means more than 20 years of education without Latino representation in a classroom. The lack of racial and ethnic inclusion and diversity in schools and universities is also reflected in statistics over the years. Based on data from the Hispanic Star platform, only 8 % of teachers in the United States are Latino. “When I was at Harvard, it was the first time I heard students speak several languages, including Spanish, because they came from different parts of the world and Latin America. And I was like ‘Wow, that’s nice’. But that was not my experience when I was an undergraduate in Georgia. Several times when I spoke Spanish, I noticed that other American people looked at me in a bad way. And that was not my experience at Harvard. It was common to hear people talking in many languages”, Nataly added.

“To not be afraid to ask for help, to network and to find someone on social media or LinkedIn and tell them: ‘I’d like to learn a little more about your experience with your studies’. A simple startup can get you to a place like Harvard. That’s what I did. I sought out mentors, sought out people who were already at Harvard and asked them about the process. I annoyed a lot of people, but I graduated”, Nataly laughed.

El Mezquital es un municipio localizado al suroeste de México, específicamente en el estado de Durango. Tiene más de 40.000 habitantes y 800 pueblos. Pero en el “pueblito” donde nació Nataly quedan unos pocos. De las 3.000 personas que allí viven, Nataly confiesa que una gran parte emigró a los Estados Unidos por necesida-
LA IMPORTANCIA DE LA EDUCACIÓN PARA LA COMUNIDAD LATINA “Cuando estaba en un día súper estresante en la escuela, siempre me ponía a pensar que si mi mamá pudo arriesgar su vida cruzando la frontera, ¿cómo yo no voy a poder aplicar a una universidad?”, dijo Nataly. Tanto para la joven como para su mamá, la educación es prioridad. Lo mismo piensa el 83% de los latinos, quienes ven la educación como un tema medular para su comunidad y familia, según datos tomados de la Hispanic Star. Para el 2029, se proyecta que la matrícula de estudiantes latinos consiga un aumento de 14 millones. Actualmente, el 25% de los latinos tienen una educación universitaria, mientras que el 50% de los estudiantes latinos son los primeros en sus familias en ir a una universidad.
des económicas y en busca de mejores oportunidades profesionales y educativas para sus familias. Las estadísticas de Data México aseguran que para el 2020, el 65% de la población de El Mezquital se encontraba bajo extrema pobreza. La mamá de Nataly también decidió dejar a un lado su vida en El Mezquital para pasar una de las barreras más peligrosa: cruzar la frontera. Lo hizo con 28 años, como madre soltera y sin saber inglés; mientras que Nataly era una infante de 5 años. Desde ese entonces, Verónica ha trabajado durísimo para poder llevar el pan a la mesa. Como muchos inmigrantes en distintos estados, trabaja desde hace 12 años en la industria avícola, también conocida como polleras. Se levanta todos los días a las 4 de la mañana para prepararse y salir a trabajar a la fábrica que queda a unos 5 minutos de su casa en Gainesville (Georgia). Luego de pasar horas procesando pollos, que a veces supera las 10 horas de trabajo, regresa a la casa para hacer las tareas domésticas y volver a la cama a las 8 de la noche, lo necesario para descansar y volver a la carga al día siguiente. Según la organización Economy Police Institute, el 50% de las personas que trabajan en el procesamiento de pollos en los Estados Unidos son de origen mexicano y, en su mayoría, inmigrantes. “Vinimos a los Estados Unidos porque en El Mezquital estábamos muy pobres. Estábamos buscando más oportunidades para Nataly, para que ella estudiara y saliera adelante”, dijo Verónica en entrevista con AL DÍA. Y así ha sido. Desde que Nataly comenzó sus estudios, se ha destacado por su liderazgo e interés en la educación superior. Primero, obtuvo su educación secundaria en la Chestatee High School, en Georgia. Luego, optó por hacer su licenciatura en la Universidad de Georgia del Norte, convirtiéndose en la primera generación de su familia en hacer estudios universitarios. Logró viajar a Perú y España como estudiante becada y ser mentora de estudiantes latinos y de primera generación para que pudieran estudiar en el extranjero con todos los gastos pagos. Pero lo que realmente le cambió la vida fue la práctica que realizó en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos como parte de las iniciativas que lleva a cabo la organización Congressional Caucus Hispanic Institute para incrementar la representación de los estudiantes latinos en el legislativo.

Me da muchísimo gusto que cada año crece la cantidad de estudiantes latinos que nos inscribimos a la universidad. Pero lamentablemente, a veces se nos hace difícil por la falta de apoyo económico, porque eres el primero en tu familia en obtener una educación universitaria, por ser hijo de padres inmigrantes, o incluso también por falta de representación de profesores y administradores hispanos
RECOMENDACIONES PARA LOS ESTUDIANTES LATINOS “Que no tengan miedo a pedir ayuda, de hacer networking y de encontrar a alguien en las redes sociales o en Linkedin y decirles: ‘Me gustaría aprender un poco más de tu experiencia con tus estudios’. Un simple comienzo puede llevarte a un lugar como Harvard. Así fue como yo hice. Busqué mentores, busqué personas que ya estaban en Harvard y les pregunté sobre el proceso. Molesté a muchas personas, pero ya me gradué”, contó Nataly entre risas.
“Fue una experiencia que me ayudó muchísimo y fue maravillosa. Sin embargo, me sentía pequeña y me decía ‘¿qué estoy haciendo aquí?’ ‘¿Qué yo tengo para contribuir a esta institución tan grande de gobierno?’ Yo no sabía cómo hacer networking y no me sentía representada porque en el Congreso la mayoría de nuestros senadores son blancos y ahí fue donde me dio ese miedo y el síndrome del impostor. Pero al tener miedo me di cuenta de que sí tenía la experiencia, que las barreras que he enfrentado son muy valiosas y que tengo que seguir abogando por mi comunidad latina, por mi misma y por no tener miedo de ser en realidad quién soy”, aseguró la joven de 26 años. Hace apenas dos meses Nataly culminó sus estudios en Harvard, donde obtuvo una maestría enfocada en la administra-
ción educativa y el desarrollo de universidades. Además, completó una certificación en traducción del inglés al español. Aunque antes de obtener el certificado, ya Nataly ayudaba a su mamá a traducir e interpretar lo que le decían en las citas médicas, en los documentos legales y en las diligencias diarias. “Estoy muy agradecida que durante todo este tiempo, mi mamá me ha hablado sobre la importancia de mantener el español y la cultura. Ella no quiere que se me olvide el español y siento que ha hecho muy buen trabajo. Hasta la fecha, no se me olvida. Cuando tenía 5 años y estaba en kindergarten, el primer reto que tuve es que mi nombre en inglés lo pronunciaban diferente. Al principio yo no le respondía a la maestra porque no estaba acostumbra a escuchar mi nombre de esa forma. Hubo
un punto donde yo me frustré, me enojé y le grité a mi maestra: ¡Yo no me llamó así! ¡Mi nombre es Nataly!”, reveló la joven sobre las barreras del lenguaje que enfrentan los English Language Learner (ELL) al llegar al país. Nataly tampoco tuvo profesores latinos hasta que llegó a Harvard. Esto significa más de 20 años de educación sin representación latina en un salón de clase. La falta de inclusión y diversidad étnica y racial en las escuelas y universidades también se refleja en las estadísticas a través de los años. Con base a los datos de la plataforma Hispanic Star, solo el 8% de los maestros en los Estados Unidos son latinos. “Cuando estuve en Harvard, fue la primera vez que escuché a estudiantes hablar varios lenguajes, incluyendo el español, porque venían de diferente partes del mundo y de Latinoamérica. Y yo decía ‘¡wow, qué bonito!’. Pero esa no fue mi experiencia cuando estudié la licenciatura en Georgia, que varias de las veces donde hablaba español, notaba que otras personas americanas a veces me veían de mala manera. Y esa no fue mi experiencia en Harvard. Era común escuchar a personas conversar en varios idiomas”, añadió Nataly.
PLANES FUTUROS Próximamente, Nataly lanzará una agencia de consultoría en educación para ayudar a más latinos a acceder a la universidad. También comenzará a ofrecer servicios de traducción y discursos de motivación.

ow can a mare and a beetle console a woman fleeing her sexual awakening? Clara Sola, the debut feature by Costa Rican-Swedish director Nathalie Alvarez, seems to outline an answer. The film’s lead is 40-year-old Clara, who suffers from a religious repression driven by her own mother in a remote Costa Rican village. Tension increases in her family when her niece approaches her 15th birthday and introduces her boyfriend. This situation will lead Clara to undertake a journey of liberation from all the prejudices that have dominated her life. The film premiered this July in the United States at a key political and social moment for the debate on abortion and feminism. It was previously presented at the Cannes, Guadalajara, Lima, Sao Paulo, BFI London, Goteborg, Cartagena and Thessaloniki film festivals. It won five awards at the Guldbagges (Swedish Film Awards): Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Screenplay. In the midst of flights, intercontinental travel, premieres and awards, Nathalie Álvarez spoke with AL DÍA before the screening of her production in New York, California, Ohio, Oregon and Washington.
How did the idea of producing Clara Sola come up? What inspired you? It was born as an exercise to apply to a screenwriting school. They gave us a couple of photos and from there Clara was born, who is very honest with herself and feels no shame. The first scene is a masturbation, a scene of liberation. From there the rest develops. It takes place in a rural area in Costa Rica. I co-wrote it with María Camila Arias. She grew up in Colombia and I grew up in Costa Rica. We always look at Latin America with a lot of love, but we also question the patriarchal norms that are passed from generation to generation, from woman to woman. Patriarchy continues to reproduce itself, even in homes where there are no men.
The lead is Wendy Chinchilla, who lives the character body and soul. How was the casting? From the beginning I was almost sure she would be a dancer, because I needed a person who had a lot of body control, even though Clara is a character who doesn’t move that much. But she does have a lot of

¿Cómo surgió la idea de producir ‘ Clara Sola’? ¿Qué le inspiró? Nace como un ejercicio para aplicar a una escuela de guion. Nos dieron un par de fotos y a partir de ahí nació Clara, que es muy honesta consigo misma y no siente vergüenza. La primera escena es una masturbación, una escena de liberación. A partir de ahí se desarrolla el resto. Ocurre en una zona rural en Costa Rica. La co-escribí con María Camila Arias. Ella creció en Colombia y yo en Costa Rica. Siempre vemos a Latinoamérica con mucho amor, pero también cuestionamos las normas patriarcales que pasan de generación en generación, de mujer a mujer. El patriarcado se sigue reproduciendo, incluso, en casas donde no hay hombres.
La protagonista es Wendy Chinchilla, que vive el personaje en cuerpo y alma. ¿Cómo fue el casting? Desde el inicio estaba casi segura de que sería una bailarina, porque necesitaba una persona que tuviera mucho control del cuerpo, pese a que Clara es un personaje que no se mueve tanto. Pero sí tiene mucho movimiento interior. Empecé a buscar en varios lugares y a Wendy la conocí en un espectáculo de danza contemporánea donde la vi bailando. Y la llamamos al casting. Trabajamos mucho, porque vengo del teatro físico y el mimo y ella viene de la danza. Trabajamos a partir de lo físico, de las imágenes internas y de imaginarnos cómo tenía pequeñas raíces en la espalda para crear la postura que tiene Clara. Que las imágenes internas generaran la sensación de que por dentro es mucho más grande que su propio

CULTURA ENGLISH inner movement. I started looking in various places and I met Wendy at a contemporary dance show where I saw her dancing. And we called her for the casting. We worked a lot, because I come from physical theater and mime and she comes from dance. We worked from the physical, from the internal images and imagining how she had small roots in her back to create the posture that Clara has. The internal images created the sensation that, inside, she is much bigger than her own body, that she needs to free herself. We worked a lot with the image of the wolf, Clara is 20 percent wolf.
You grew up between Costa Rica and Sweden, why did you choose Latin America for your debut film? This character of Clara came up living in Costa Rica. It was always very clear. The nice thing is that this is my first film in Spanish, because my short films have been in Swedish and English.
In addition to Cannes, your film has been screened in other European competitions. What has the public’s reception been like? Very positive. I thought there would be certain topics that would be difficult to talk about, but I have found a positive response. There are topics that people don’t dare to talk about to
start a conversation. But watching a platform, like a film or any other work of art, it’s much easier to start a conversation.
Clara Sola arrives in the U.S. in the midst of the controversy over the repeal of abortion rights. What do you expect? It’s very sad to follow this news and it’s very crazy that it’s happening because it could relatively influence the rest of the world. Clara Sola is a feminist film about self-healing, self-love, and being able to choose. Clara is not allowed to choose about her own body, and this goes very much in parallel with this abortion thing. It’s something that was talked about in Costa Rica when the film came out because abortion is illegal there. I hope the film manages to open conversations, minds and hearts about women’s rights over their bodies.

Usted se crió entre Costa Rica y Suecia, ¿por qué eligió a América Latina para su ópera prima? Este personaje de Clara surgió viviendo en Costa Rica. Siempre fue muy claro. Lo bonito es que es mi primera película en español, porque mis cortometrajes han sido en sueco y en inglés.
Además de Cannes, su película ha llegado a otros certámenes en Europa. ¿Cuál ha sido el recibimiento del público? Muy positivo. Pensé que habría ciertos temas sobre los cuales iba a ser difícil hablar. Pero he encontrado una respuesta positi-
va. Hay temas sobre los cuales la gente no se atreve a hablar para empezar una conversación. Pero viendo una plataforma, como lo es una película o cualquier otra obra de arte, es mucho más fácil iniciar una conversación.

¿Existen más Claras en el mundo?
Es muy triste seguir estas noticias y es muy loco que esté pasando porque podría influenciar relativamente al resto del mundo. ‘Clara Sola’ es una película feminista que trata de autosanación, de autoquererse, de poder elegir. A Clara no se le permite elegir sobre su propio cuerpo. Esto va muy en paralelo con esto del aborto. Es algo de lo
Muchas. De hecho, en Costa Rica pusieron el hashtag #TodasSomosClara, porque en cierta manera todas tenemos algo de Clara. Tiene mucho que ver con cómo hemos sido criadas, con el tipo de traiciones que nos imponen y cómo nos limitan. Espero que la película cree revoluciones internas, aunque sean muy pequeñas. Que deje algo que de alguna manera revolucione, sane o enoje.
Are there more Claras in the world? There are many. In fact, in Costa Rica they used the hashtag #TodasSomosClara because, in a way, we all have something of Clara. It has a lot to do with how we have been raised, with the kind of betrayals that are imposed on us and how they limit us. I hope the film creates internal revolutions, even if they are very small. That it leaves something that somehow revolutionizes, heals or angers.

irleyda Tatis is a black woman from Cartagena, characterized by her Afro curly hair and her strong and determined tone of voice, which for six years has allowed her to carry a discourse of self-love to work to vindicate the Afro aesthetics in Cartagena de Indias, in the Colombian Caribbean. Cirle, as she prefers to be called, was born in the township of La Boquilla, a fishing community in the northern part of the city, and grew up in the Olaya Herrera neighborhood, one of the most forgotten in the outskirts of Cartagena, both with large resilient black communities. From the age of 10, Cirle went through chemical straightening processes for her hair, because in a city like Cartagena, frizzy hair was not well accepted. Today, 16 years later, Cirle works teaching people that Afro and curly hair is also “good hair”. “We have to love Afro hair as Good Hair. This is a hair that speaks about us, our ancestry, our history”, Cirle told Al DÍA. The mission of Pelo Bueno Experience Centers goes beyond a haircut or a good hairstyle. This is a space where Afro men and women have found support and confidence to begin their transition process to their natural hair. “In Cartagena, many women already wear their natural hair, be it Afro, curly or wavy, and this has also been the result of the work we have done at Pelo Bueno, together with other social movements that have influenced the way we relate to our hair”, Tatis emphasized during the interview. While it is true that this process of more than six years has as its final goal a physical result such as the “big cut”, the name given to the haircut in which people eliminate the last traces of straightening to let their natural wave come out, Cirle also aims at an internal change, in which many women have learned to identify with their roots, their hair and their aesthetics, which is also powerful. “With the liberation of natural hair,

irleyda Tatis es una mujer negra cartagenera que se caracteriza por su cabello afro marcado y su tono de voz fuerte y decidido, que desde hace seis años le ha permitido llevar un discurso de amor propio para trabajar en reivindicar la estética afro en Cartagena de indias, en el Caribe colombiano. Cirle, como prefiere que la llamen, nació en el corregimiento de La Boquilla, una comunidad pesquera en la zona norte de la ciudad, y se crió en el barrio Olaya Herrera, uno de los más olvidados en la periferia cartagenera, ambos con grandes comunidades negras resilientes. Desde los 10 años, Cirle pasó por procesos de alisado químico para su cabello, pues en una ciudad como Cartagena llevar el cabello crespo no era bien visto. Hoy, 16 años después, Cirle trabaja enseñando a las personas que el pelo afro y rizado también es un “Pelo Bueno”. “Tenemos que amar el pelo afro como un Pelo Bueno. Este es un pelo que habla de nosotros, de nuestra ancestralidad, de nuestra historia”, dijo Cirle a Al Día. Y es que la misión de los Centros de Experiencia Pelo Bueno va más allá de un corte de cabello o un buen peinado. Este es un espacio donde hombres y mujeres afro han encontrado apoyo y confianza para comenzar su proceso de transición hacia su cabello natural. “En Cartagena ya muchas mujeres llevan su pelo natural, sea afro, rizado y ondulado, y eso también ha sido fruto de el trabajo que hemos realizado desde Pelo Bueno, en conjunto con otros movimientos sociales que han influido en la forma en la que nos relacionamos con nuestro cabello”, enfatizó Tatis durante la entrevista. Si bien es cierto que este proceso de más de seis años tiene como meta final un resultado físico como lo es el “gran corte”, nombre que se le da al corte de cabello en el cual las personas eliminan los últimos rastros del alisado para dejar salir su onda natural, Cirle le apunta también a un cambio interno, en el cual muchas mujeres han aprendido a identificarse con sus raíces, con su cabello y su estética, que también es poderosa. people are joining this community every day, Pelo Bueno’s mission continues on the streets of a historically black city like Cartagena, teaching its citizens to lose their shame about their own aesthetics and to “see curly hair and blackness as something normal”. While it is not an easy mission, Cirle, Pelo Bueno and the entire team of collaborators have worked titanically in the country and throughout Latin America to achieve their goal: that all hair be considered Pelo Bueno.

n West Philly, University City Townhome residents face displacement after learning their apartment complex will be sold. Tenants received a letter in July of 2021 from Bret Altman, the townhome’s owner, informing them that they would not renew their HUD agreement, a program that allows tenants to use vouchers to offset rental costs as well as only pay a portion of the rent. UC Townhomes housed low-income residents for several years, where many raised their families. This community would now work against the clock to renew vouchers, and secure new and HUD-eligible housing, all while their livelihoods were upended. Over the next few months, when local media outlets got wind of the sale, several advocacy groups banded together in support of the Townhome residents. In July of 2022, residents and advocacy groups took to the streets to protest the sale and subsequently set up an encampment site in the Townhome’s courtyard. A move that Altman’s spokesperson called “unfortunate and ill-advised.” With the support of several coalitions, tenants hope to mount pressure on Altman to reach a fair and equitable agreement.

According to Civil Eats, undocumented immigrants comprise 10% of all

Undocumented immigrants as a whole pay billions in taxes and a higher effective tax rate average than the top 1% of taxpayers, however receive no civil rights when it comes to the American restaurant workforce. Martinez says that Americans have to fight the bias that is within restaurants all over the country. “We have to look at ourselves and find out what is the right thing to do and really look into equality and equal rights and we really have to act on it,” she said.

Since before the independence of Latin American and Caribbean countries from the Spanish crown, it has stuck their nose in the destinies of their people. The reason has always been to scare away those who try to interfere with its interests. It happened after 1819 when it sought to take business away from the British in the region and, indeed, it succeeded. And the list is longer. No wonder John Bolton, National Security Advisor when Donald Trump was President, told a CNN reporter: “As someone who has helped plan coups, not here, but in other countries, I can tell you it takes a lot of work”. He said that his former boss was not capable of a “carefully planned coup”. He also made reference to the Venezuelan situation and the promotion of Juan Guaidó, a mediocre opposition politician, who played at being President in the cloud with the support of Trump and the Colombian Government of Iván Duque. Bolton did not specify where he had “helped plan coups”, but it is not necessary to go much deeper. In Latin America, in addition to Venezuela, Evo Morales’ Bolivia was surely his target. What’s new about Bolton is that he talked; he gave voice to what everyone knows. That is his sin. Suspicion is not the same as ratification that it is not speculation. It also confirms the importance of Joe Biden’s election victory over
ENGLISH Trump. Can you imagine what the region would be in if that had not been the case? In Colombia, something similar happened in 2016, when after the “No” to the peace agreement with the FARC won in a baffling plebiscite. The head of the campaign that promoted that vote admitted that they had lied and caused fear among voters to achieve the goal. That the country would be left in the hands of the guerrillas, that Colombia would become the economic disaster that Venezuela turned out to be, that children would run the risk of becoming homosexual because of the contents of the school textbooks... Well-informed people knew that this was not true and questioned the leaders who opposed peace for the nonsense of their opinions. But the confession of the head of the “No” campaign confirmed that these were not isolated messages, but a coldly calculated strategy to prevent reconciliation. In the end, the peace agreement was signed with some adjustments pressured by those who lied. It began to be implemented and nothing of what was promised by the extreme right opposition happened. The right-wing Duque Government, which ends on August 7th, boycotted the agreement and did nothing to prevent the assassination of more than 300 ex-guerrillas and more than a thousand social leaders. What was kept was the doctrine of the internal enemy, promoted by the United States in the 60’s in the face of the communist threat, but which in Colombia was consolidated as a way to combat the opposition through the violation of human rights. Now comes a progressive Government in Colombia and the willingness of Biden’s administration to support peace and help resolve the many crises in the South American country. Can you imagine where that country and Latin America would be if Trump were still President?

esde Bogotá, en una Colombia azotada por años de guerra, no es novedoso que Estados Unidos haya promovido golpes de Estado en la región o en otras latitudes. Desde antes de la Independencia de los países de América Latina y el Caribe de la corona española, ha metido las narices en los destinos de sus pueblos. La razón siempre ha sido espantar a quienes intenten atravesarse en sus intereses. Ocurrió después de 1819 cuando buscó arrebatarles los negocios a los ingleses en la región y, efectivamente, lo logró. La separación de Panamá de Colombia y la posesión del canal, la incidencia de la CIA en la promoción de las dictaduras militares en la región, el entrenamiento de los militares latinoamericanos en West Point, el golpe de Pinochet en Chile, el intento de invasión a Cuba y el bloqueo de más de medio siglo. Y la lista es más larga. Por eso, no extraña que John Bolton, asesor de Seguridad Nacional de cuando Donald Trump fue presidente, le dijera a un periodista de CNN: “Como alguien que ha ayudado a planear golpes de Estado, no aquí, sino en otros países, puedo decir que requiere de mucho trabajo”, le contestó. Y se refirió a que su exjefe no era capaz de un “golpe de Estado cuidadosamente planificado”. Hizo también referencia al caso venezolano y a la promoción de Juan Guaidó, un mediocre político de la oposición, que jugó a ser presidente en la nube con el apoyo de Trump y del gobierno colombiano de Iván Duque. Bolton no concretó en donde había “ayudado a planear golpes de Estado”, pero no es necesario profundizar mucho. No más en América Latina, además de Venezuela, la Bolivia de Evo Morales estuvo seguramente en la mira. Lo novedoso de Bolton es que soltó la lengua. Le puso voz a lo que todo el mundo sabe. En Colombia, algo parecido ocurrió en el 2016, cuando después de que ganó el ‘No’ al acuerdo de paz con las FARC en un plebiscito desconcertante, el jefe de la campaña que promovió esa votación admitió que habían mentido y causado miedo entre los electores para lograr el objetivo. Que el país quedaría en manos de la guerrilla, que Colombia se convertiría en el desastre económico que resultó ser Venezuela, que los niños correrían el riesgo de volverse homosexuales por los contenidos de las cartillas escolares… Las personas bien informadas sabían que eso no era cierto y cuestionaban a los líderes que se oponían a la paz por el despropósito de sus opiniones. Pero la confesión del jefe de la campaña del ‘No’ confirmó que no eran mensajes aislados, sino una estrategia fríamente calculada para impedir la reconciliación. En últimas, el acuerdo de paz se firmó con algunos ajustes presionados por quienes mintieron. Se empezó a implementar y nada de lo que prometía la oposición de extrema derecha ocurrió. El gobierno de derecha de Duque, que termina el 7 de agosto, boicoteó lo acordado y no hizo nada para impedir el asesinato de más de 300 exguerrilleros y más de mil líderes sociales. Lo que sí se mantuvo fue la doctrina del enemigo interno, promovida por Estados Unidos en los años 60 ante la amenaza comunista, pero que en Colombia se consolidó como una manera de combatir a la oposición desde la violación de los derechos humanos. Ahora llega un gobierno progresista en Colombia y la voluntad del gobierno Biden de apoyar la paz y ayudar a resolver las distintas crisis del país suramericano. ¿Se imaginan en qué estarían ese país y América Latina si Trump fuera todavía presidente?
