s the House Select Committee To Investigate Jan. 6 continues to unravel more of the story that led up to the bloody day on Capitol Hill, the speculations around whether or not the day’s events were an attempted coup have transformed into confident statements of fact. With every new testimony and piece of evidence revealed — while not executed particularly well — it seems more and more likely that there was some serious discussion by those in then-President Donald Trump’s inner circle to do whatever it took to keep him in power. That includes inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol that turned deadly. But one former member of Trump’s cabinet that doesn’t see it that way is former National Security Advisor John Bolton, and he said so in a recent interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s The Lead. “That’s not the way Donald Trump does things,” Bolton said. “It’s rambling from one half, vast idea to another, one plan that falls through and another comes up — that’s what he was doing.” Bolton’s defense of Trump is not a flattering one. He was one of the many members of Trump’s administration to leave before its time in power was over, and he went on to publish a book (also like many others) about his experiences. It’s what appears in that book — a memoir published in 2020 called The Room Where It Happened — that made Bolton’s conversation with Tapper take a concerning turn when discussing coups.
