“IT IS NOT SO EASY TO CARRY OUT A COUP”
Journalist Martín Caparrós made this analysis: “Mr. Bolton was talking to a CNN journalist about the pro-coup character of Trump after losing the elections [...], the journalist told him that it was not necessary to be brilliant to organize a coup [...]: ‘I do not agree with that. [...] I can tell you that it requires a lot of work...’, Mr. Bolton said, boastfully, and it gave me a kind of nostalgic attack. On one hand, [...] some judge would have to summon Mr. Bolton and force him to explain in which countries he helped to organize coups [...] And, on the other hand, a bitter nostalgia […] for those years when the United States was engaged in such things [...] Latin America was a territory that the United States had to control at all costs [...]. The Cuban threat made them more careful: that is why they spent those decades encouraging and arming all kinds of coups, repressive military dictatorships [...]. But after taking over the world —believing that they were taking over the world— in 1989, Latin America ceased to interest them”. El periodista Martín Caparrós hizo este análisis: “(…) el señor Bolton hablaba con un periodista de CNN sobre lo golpista que se puso Trump después de perder las elecciones (…), el periodista le dijo que no era necesario ser brillante para organizar un golpe de Estado (…): —No estoy de acuerdo con eso. (…) puedo decirle que requiere mucho trabajo… Dijo el señor Bolton, jactancioso, y a mí me dio como un ataque de nostalgia. Por un lado, (…) algún juez tendría que convocar al señor Bolton y obligarlo a explicar en qué países ayudó a organizar golpes de Estado (…). Y, por otro lado, una nostalgia (…) amarga, de aquellos años en que Estados Unidos se dedicaba a esas cosas. (…) América Latina era un territorio que Estados Unidos debía controlar a toda costa (…). La amenaza cubana aumentó los cuidados: por eso se pasaron esas décadas fomentando y armando todo tipo de golpes de Estado, dictaduras militares represoras (…). Pero después de quedarse con el mundo —de creer que se quedaban con el mundo— en 1989, América Latina dejó de interesarle”.

BETWEEN BRAZENNESS AND IMPUNITY
The editorial of the Uruguayan journal states that the confession made by John Bolton “is nothing new [...] What is relevant, if there is anything relevant in such a ‘confession’, is ‘the brazenness and impudence’ with which he affirms it. (...) If Bolton’s statements are placed in the scenario of U.S. domestic politics, the first thing that jumps out is that they ‘appear’ after Trump’s contacts with extreme right-wing groups in the moments that preceded the attempt to take over the Capitol on January 6th became known. [...] Beyond the impunity of the ‘confession’ of the former White House Security Advisor, what his words demonstrate is the cynical commitment of a country to the development of coups in the name of a democracy which, as was seen in the attempted assault to the Capitol, is pregnant with blind violence and a deep contempt for anything that do not follows the dictates of Washington”. El editorial del semanario uruguayo manifiesta que “la confesión realizada por John Bolton “no es novedad (…).Lo relevante, si es que hay algo relevante en semejante ‘confesión’ es ‘el desparpajo y la desfachatez’ con que lo afirma. (…) Si se ubican las declaraciones de Bolton en el escenario de la política doméstica estadounidense, lo primero que salta a la ‘vista”, es que estas ‘aparecen’, luego de darse a conocerse los contactos de Trump con grupos de extrema derecha en los momentos que antecedieron al intento de toma del Capitolio el pasado 6 de enero. (…) Más allá de la impunidad de la ‘confesión’ del ex asesor de Seguridad de la Casa Blanca, lo que sus dichos demuestran es el cínico compromiso de un país en el desarrollo de golpes de Estado en nombre de una democracia que, como se vio en el intento de asalto al Capitolio, está preñada de una ciega violencia y de un profundo desprecio a todo aquello que signifique no seguir los dictados de Washington”.

LÓPEZ OBRADOR CRUSHES BIDEN
Sergio Negrete Cárdenas, in his commentary on the summit between López Obrador and Biden, praised the president of Mexico: “he gave a lecture at the White House before a Joseph Biden whom he crushed [...] at times he embodied Benito Juárez, José Martí, Simón Bolívar and Lázaro Cárdenas. It was not a Mexican who was making a speech, but a representative of Latin America before the apathetic heir of the Yankee imperialism [...] he made history with that speech, with his audacity in taking advantage of a space that is usually used for taking pictures, showing cordiality and talking briefly before the media [...] Nobody expected the Mexican leader to take out a pile of papers and deliver an extraordinary speech, reading it for half an hour. López Obrador knows how to exploit an opportunity and make history. His words hit the mark and forced the American to react. Biden never tired of thanking him for his generosity. Sergio Negrete Cárdenas, en su comentario de la cumbre entre López Obrador y Biden, llenó de elogios al presidente de México: “dictó cátedra en la Casa Blanca ante un Joseph Biden al que dejó aplastado (…) encarnó por momentos a Benito Juárez, José Martí, Simón Bolívar y Lázaro Cárdenas. No era un mexicano el que discurseaba, sino un representante de América Latina ante el apocado heredero del imperialismo yanqui. (…) hizo historia con ese discurso, con su audacia al aprovechar un espacio que habitualmente es para tomarse unas fotos, mostrar cordialidad y conversar brevemente ante los medios. (…) Nadie se esperaba que el líder mexicano sacara un montón de papeles y rindiera un extraordinario discurso, leyéndolo durante media hora. López Obrador sabe explotar una oportunidad y hacer historia. Sus palabras dieron en el blanco y obligaron al estadounidense a reaccionar. Biden no se cansó de agradecer a López Obrador su generosidad”.

WHAT LÓPEZ OBRADOR ASKED FOR WILL NOT HAPPEN
Regarding the summit between López Obrador and Biden, columnist Carlos Puig wrote that the Mexican president did “what he had promised to do and what should be done. He asked for an increase in temporary work visas and legalization of the millions of undocumented Mexicans who live, work and pay taxes in the United States [...] Well said, but none of that will happen. Washington is not equiped to make those decisions, mostly made by Congress, whose Democratic majority is building the case of how Donald Trump, in his madness, tried to prevent the certification of Biden’s election to see if the Justice Department dares to initiate legal proceedings against him [...] What will continue to happen are the migratory waves from Mexico and other countries heading to the U.S. and passing through our territory. The problem of asking for the impossible, even if it brings quite a few applause, is that in many situations it becomes the best pretext for not doing what is possible, even if it is less”. El columnista Carlos Puig escribió, en cuanto a la cumbre entre López Obrador y Biden, que el presidente mexicano hizo “lo que había prometido hacer y lo que se debía hacer. Pidió aumento en las visas de trabajo temporal y legalización de los millones de mexicanos indocumentados que viven, trabajan y pagan impuestos en Estados Unidos (…) Bien dicho, pero nada de eso sucederá. No está el horno para bollos en Washington y esas decisiones las toma en su mayoría el Congreso, cuya mayoría demócrata está armando el caso de cómo Donald Trump en su locura trató de impedir la certificación de la elección de Biden para ver si el Departamento de Justicia se atreve a iniciar proceso judicial en su contra. (…) Lo que sí seguirá pasando son las olas migratorias desde México y otros países rumbo a EU y pasando por nuestro territorio. El asunto con pedir lo imposible, por más que traiga muchos aplausos, es que en muchas ocasiones se convierte en el mejor pretexto para no hacer lo posible, aunque sea menos”.
