fter the Pennsylvania state legislature had already missed its June 30 deadline by almost a week to pass a state budget and send it on the Governor Tom Wolf, Republicans in the State Senate pushed through a last-minute, middle-of-thenight constitutional amendment that would add language banning abortion in the state. The reaction from Democrats was universal disdain at both what the amendment means and the manner in which it was passed — last-minute, with the budget still unresolved, and af-

ter forcing a further extension into the night to vote. “Sad day in the history of our state,” wrote Rep. Danilo Burgos on Twitter. Proposed constitutional amendments must pass both chambers of the legislature during a two-year legislative session before being put to the voters that have the final say at the ballot box. In an impassioned speech given by Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta on the night the amendment passed, he called out the hypocrisy of Republicans for wanting to trust voters on abortion given the events surrounding the 2020 election,
