Pedro David Espinoza’s chance meeting with Frank Baxter, former U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay, defined much of what happened next in terms of business development.

Espinoza is 28 years old, Peruvian and arrived in the United States ten years ago. He did so on a scholarship to study at the University of California. There he perceived the difficulties for Latinos in everyday life, and this is what he told AL DÍA for the main article of this edition: “We have to work harder, double, triple or quadruple, to be at the same level as our counterparts”.

One day, working at the Golden Bear Café in Berkeley, he met Baxter. They spoke in Spanish and hit it off.

He told him about the idea of creating a technology company, they exchanged contact information and began an interesting relationship. As Espinoza told it, they were two different generations, with different ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic statuses, but they were not obstacles.

At the age of 19, Espinoza created his first venture, and Baxter was the first investor: SmileyGo, an application with data from 1.3 million non-profit organizations and users in more than 25 countries.

He later created a consulting firm for companies such as Google, Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft. He certainly did well and has received recognitions. “I became a successful entrepreneur, author and speaker”, he said. He has written books and lectures to further his purposes.

But he didn’t stop there. His mission became funding the new generation of businesses founded by Latina women, so he created Pan Peru to help them become entrepreneurs.

“When you invest in the women of a country, of a town, of a community, it grows

and develops”, he said. Now there are almost a hundred women entrepreneurs.

He has raised funds for Pan Perú and has also built ten computer labs and ten libraries to help girls and young women access STEM education.

FACE TO FACE WITH PREJUDICES

This edition also features the story of the novel People Like Me and its author, Chilean José Ignacio Valenzuela, which narrates the challenges faced by a gay couple in Miami when they decide to become parents.

Valenzuela, known as Chascas, lived in Chile during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, who punished the country by closing the opportunity for men and women to read and write whatever they wanted.

That is why Valenzuela decided to become a writer and write for young people. He lives in Miami and has just published Gente como yo, for adult audiences.z

Espinoza tiene 28 años es peruano y llegó hace diez a Estados Unidos. Lo hizo por una beca para estudiar en la Universidad de California. Allí percibió las dificultades para los latinos en la cotidianidad. Y así se lo contó a AL DÍA para el artículo central de esta edición: “Tenemos que trabajar más duro, el doble, el triple o el cuádruple, para estar al mismo nivel que nuestros homólogos”.

Un día, trabajando en Golden Bear Café, en Berkeley, conoció a Baxter. Hablaron en español y congeniaron.

Le contó la idea de crear una empresa tecnológica, se cruzaron los datos de contacto y empezaron una interesante relación. Como contó Espinoza eran dos generaciones diferentes, con etnias, religiones y estatus socioeconómicos distintos, pero no fueron obstáculos.

Con solo 19 años, Espinoza creó su primer emprendimiento y Baxter fue el primer inversionista: SmileyGo, una aplicación con los datos de 1,3 millones de organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y con usuarios en más de 25 países.

Después creó una de consultoría para firmas como Google, Oracle, Amazon y Microsoft. Sin duda le fue bien y ha recibido reconocimientos. “Me convertí en un emprendedor de éxito, autor y conferencista”, señaló. Ha escrito libros y dicta conferencias para completar sus propósitos.

Pero no paró ahí. Su misión se convirtió en financiar a la nueva generación de empresas fundadas por mujeres latinas. Y creó Pan Perú para ayudarles a convertirse en empresarias.

“Cuando inviertes en las mujeres de un país, de un pueblo, de una comunidad, esta crece y se desarrolla”, manifestó. Ahora ya suma casi un centenar de emprendedoras.

Ha conseguido recursos para Pan Perú y también ha construido diez laboratorios de informática y diez bibliotecas para ayudar a niñas y jóvenes a acceder a la educación STEM.

CARA A CARA CON PREJUICIOS

Asimismo, en esta edición también se cuenta la historia de la novela ‘Gente como yo’ y de su autor, el chileno José Ignacio Valenzuela, que narra los desafíos que afronta una pareja gay en Miami cuando deciden convertirse en padres.

Valenzuela, conocido como ‘Chascas’, vivió en Chile en plena dictadura militar de Augusto Pinochet, que castigó al país cerrándoles la oportunidad a hombres y mujeres de leer y escribir lo que les antojara.

Por eso, Valenzuela decidió convertirse en escritor y escribir para jóvenes. Vive en Miami y acaba de publicar Gente como yo, para el público adulto. z

Originally from West Harlem, New York City, he arrived to Philadelphia later that year to pursue his juris doctorate at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law.

Three years later, he’d become the first Puerto Rican to graduate from the school.

WORKINGS OF A PIONEER

In 1972, Díaz became the first Latino judge to pass the Pennsylvania Bar Exam. He then went on to become the first Latino to practice law and later the first Latino judge elected in Pennsylvania to serve on the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia County.

He’s also worked an HUD General Counsel, and Philadelphia City Solicitor at different points in his career.

While his name is in the record books as the first to do these things, he set it upon himself to go on a personal and professional mission.

“I may have been the first, but I never wanted to be the last,” Díaz said.

Starting with Temple Law School, Díaz set out to diversify both its student and professor base.

His goal — to create a pipeline of diverse legal professionals across the entire legal sector.

“I have always advocated for marginalized and underrepresented groups,” said Diaz, “including African Americans, Afro-Latinos, other communities of color, Soviet Jews, women, Latinos, and obviously, the Puerto Rican diaspora.”

Era 1969 y acababa de graduarse en la Universidad de St. John. LA LABOR DE UN PIONERO

En 1972, Díaz se convirtió en el primer juez latino en aprobar el examen del Colegio de Abogados de Pensilvania. Posteriormente, fue el primer latino en ejercer como abogado y, más tarde, el primer juez latino elegido en Pensilvania para formar parte del Tribunal de Causas Comunes del condado de Filadelfia. También ha trabajado como consejero general del Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de los Estados Unidos (HUD, por sus siglas en inglés) y procurador de la ciudad de Filadelfia en distintos momentos de su carrera.

Aunque su nombre figura en los libros de registro como el primero en hacer estas obras, se propuso emprender una misión personal y profesional: “Puede que haya sido el primero, pero nunca quise ser el último”, afirma Díaz. Empezando por la Facultad de Derecho de Temple, Díaz se propuso diversificar tanto su base de estudiantes como de profesores. The war waged by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador against Mexico’s National Election Institute (INE) took a particularly grave turn for the latter on Feb. 22, 2023, as the country’s Senate passed a bill that effectively gutted the longtime election watchdog.

The bill, which AMLO says will save the country up to $150 million a year, significantly cuts salaries for staffers at INE, decreases funding for local election offices and what goes towards training Mexican citizens that run polling stations. The new measure also cuts back on sanctions that can be leveled against candidates for campaign spending.

“The electoral system will be improved,” AMLO said. “They are going to shrink some areas so that more can be done with less.”

For the current Mexican president and his supporters, the move to gut Mexico’s electoral watchdog is a long time coming.

THE REVENGE LONG PLAY

AMLO’s beef with the institute dates back to 2006, when he narrowly lost the presidential election that year to Felipe Calderon. He immediately cried fraud and called on his supporters to protest the results, and massive demonstrations took place across the country for months.

Even at Calderon’s swearing-in ceremony, it lasted less than five minutes on account of AMLO’s supporters in Mexico’s Congress of the Union attempting to shout down the oath of office and then engaging in brawls.

El proyecto de ley, que AMLO dice que le ahorrará al país hasta 150 millones de dólares al año, recorta significativamente los salarios de los funcionarios del INE, disminuye el financiamiento para las oficinas electorales locales y lo que se destina para capacitar a los ciudadanos mexicanos que administran las casillas electorales. La comunidad internacional se pronunció más tarde y, si bien no encontró irregularidades electorales, AMLO nunca lo olvidaría. Like almost every 2023 Philly Mayoral candidate AL DÍA has welcomed to its office for a talk this year, Allan Domb believes that leadership woes sit at the core of the city and its inability to effectively respond to its problems.

In Domb’s recent visit to AL DÍA on March 1, he took almost immediate aim at Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (without actually name dropping him) and his lethargic attitude as mayor that’s been a constant punching bag for candidates since last Summer. Back then, Kenney appeared on local TV after another shooting in the city, and said he looked forward to not being mayor.

Instead, Domb said the mayor must remain optimistic about the best things in the city with eye towards the future.

“The mayor always looks at the city as the glass is half full, never half empty,” Domb told AL DÍA, before laying out a plan that emphasized education, collaboration on some of the city’s biggest issues and transparency.

“I learned that you have to build relationships and in order for you to be a leader, people have to like and trust you, and then they’ll consider working with you. I tried to build those personal relationships with everybody,” he added.

A CABINET OF PUBLIC SAFETY

Philly’s homicide rate has increased every year since 2013, when it was 240. 2021 was the worst year on record, with 562. And 2022 was not any better, ending at 516.

On Dec. 14, 2022, Domb released his “Agenda for Long-Term Safety and Opportunity,” a public safety plan that includes 10 major actions he would take in his first 100 days in office.

UN GABINETE DE SEGURIDAD PÚBLICA

Por otra parte, la tasa de homicidios en Filadelfia ha aumentado cada año desde 2013, cuando sumó 240. El 2021 fue el peor año registrado, con 562, y el 2022 no estuvo mejor, pues terminó en 516.

El 14 de diciembre pasado, Domb dio a conocer su “Agenda para la seguridad y la oportunidad a largo plazo”, un plan que incluye diez acciones principales que tomaría en sus primeros cien días en el cargo.

At AL DÍA, Domb highlighted his declaration of a public health emergency in Kensington, calling the situation there a “disaster,” among other provisions.

He said he would also provide weekly briefings to inform the public of the city’s ongoing efforts to combat gun violence and public safety, in similar fashion to that of the city’s daily COVID updates.

“I would conduct those meetings myself on a weekly basis or more frequently as needed,” he said.

In the short term, Domb said it’s about getting the violence in control. In the long term, education is at the center of his approach to improving Philadelphia’s situation, saying crime is the “symptom” of other issues. He proceeded to paint the picture of an ideal education-to-success pipeline.

“If you have a better paying job, the housing becomes more affordable. And when housing becomes more affordable, and you have a better paying job, you climb out of poverty, and the crime reduces,” Domb said.

One of Domb’s plans in education is to teach financial literacy to K-12, along with technology and entrepreneurship.

“I want to teach our kids how to create their own business. I always say ‘you make a living, working, you create wealth, owning,’” he said.

“Si tienes un trabajo mejor remunerado, la vivienda es más asequible. Y cuando la vivienda es más asequible y se tiene un mejor salario, se sale de la pobreza y se reduce la delincuencia”, aseguró.

EDUCACIÓN COMO CRISTO REY

Uno de los planes de Domb en materia de educación es impartirles conocimientos financieros a los alumnos de primaria y secundaria, junto con tecnología y espíritu empresarial: “Quiero enseñar a nuestros hijos a crear su propia empresa. Siempre digo: ‘Te ganas la vida trabajando, creas riqueza poseyendo’”.

Pedro David Espinoza is a TED Speaker, Entrepreneur, tech investor, and bilingual author. He was born and raised in Peru and moved to the United States at 18 on scholarships to attend the University of California, Berkeley in San Francisco.

Noticing the lack of representation on campus forced Pedro to break barriers to excel.

“We have to work harder, twice as much or three x or four x, to be at the same level with our counterparts,” reiterates Pedro, who credits this with helping him embrace his Latin heritage.

His first professional connection was while he was a college student. While at the Golden Bear Cafe in Berkeley, Pedro noticed an older man wearing a suit and decided to approach him. After proper introductions and learning that he was Frank Baxter, the former United States Ambassador to Uruguay, former CEO of Jefferies & Company, and a Board member of the University of California

Berkeley Foundation, they began to converse in Spanish.

“Two different generations, ethnicities, political parties, religions, faith, socioeconomic status, network—we clicked,” Pedro explained. “I shared my startup idea, my tech company idea—he gave me his business card, and I followed up. I send him newsletters, emails.”

Pedro took the time to foster a relationship with Frank, who was launching a seminar on Latin American civic history but didn’t know any Latin American international students that could attend.

Pedro already had friends from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Venezuela, Chile, and Peru, and decided to invite them all to attend Frank’s seminar.

“You don’t need a title to be a leader. You don’t need to be a CEO to help another CEO,” Pedro emphasized. “The key for me was seeing him as a human, seeing him as a friend, forgetting that he’s a multimillionaire CEO, a powerful person.”

Pedro never imagined that Baxter would become a key player in his ven-

ture, solidifying the importance of networking and sponsorship.

DREAMING IN PERCENTAGES

Experiencing rejection from JP Morgan, Deloitte, and McKenzie, prompted Pedro to rethink his plans of seeking employment.

“Because no one seems to care for me or deems me hirable or employable,” said Pedro referencing his inability to get employed or even considered for countless internships. After taking a technology entrepreneurship course at Stanford the summer of his Freshman year, he went from dreaming in percentages to becoming the percentage of the few Latino immigrant entrepreneurs in America able to start a successful tech company.

At 19, he learned how to launch a tech startup. His first tech company Smi-

leyGo, an app that indexed the data of 1.3 million nonprofits in addition to having users in over 25 countries, was backed by Baxter, the company’s first investor.

As the CEO and founder, Pedro was responsible for raising capital and hiring people—over 30 team members. He was on the Hispanics Shark Tank and Univision in Español and countless media platforms speaking about SmileyGo and fostering relationships with prospective investors through networking.

Later, he created another company focused on consulting to work with Google, Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft as a TED and keynote speaker.

“I became a successful entrepreneur, author, speaker, through failure, through being comfortable [with] being uncomfortable,” Pedro assures.

INDUSTRY AGNOSTIC

Fueled by a motivation to network, Pedro started investing and funding the next generation—startups founded by Latinas. Thus far, Pedro has invested in nine companies.

“You have to be industry agnostic— investing from autonomous vehicles like Kiwi to insurance tech like Noyo to legal tech like Paladin, music tech like Feed FM,” said Pedro. “As a venture capitalist, as a tech investor, you have to invest in the potential and character of the entrepreneur.”

He explains that it is about the team, the values, the potential, and whether or not the entrepreneurs have the grit and resilience to rebuild.

PAN PERU USA

His emphatic nature made the visionary focus on accessibility, innovation, and sustainability, creating Pan Peru, a venture that empowers women to become entrepreneurs.

“I believe in paying it forward and giving back,” said Pedro, emphasizing how privileged he was to graduate from the University of Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on Technology Entrepreneurship, MARCH

complete a Certificate in International Management from Stanford University, and be part of class of 2023 Harvard Business Analytics Program.

Therefore, using Pan Peru to “help women, specifically Latinas, Hispanic females, to become entrepreneurs in my home country” is extremely special and important to him.

“When you invest in women of a country, a village, a community, it grows and develops,” Pedro reassures. “We started the program with one female entrepreneur, product design, and marketing ideation. Today we have almost 100 female entrepreneurs in the program.” Their goal is to reach ten thousand.

Pedro emphasizes that having that diversity of thoughts and gender, and ethnicity fuels innovation in his company— 75% of Pan Peru’s board of directors and leaders are female, people of color, and come from underestimated backgrounds.

He mentions that 2021 marked Pan Peru’s most successful revenue stream— e-commerce, which helped female entrepreneurs put out different alpaca products, sweaters, and scarves, helping them grow their online business.

Using the power of networking to raise capital from companies like Western Union, First Republic Bank, Bristol Myers Squibb, Salesforce, and many Fortune 500 companies through grants, checks, and donations to “help equip these women to grow their LLCs through microfinance, funding, and lending,” Pedro explained.

In addition to raising capital, Pan Peru has built ten computer labs and ten libraries to help girls and young people access STEM education and learn some Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook, JavaScript, and web design.

“I believe that when we empower these women to become entrepreneurs, we’re investing in their future,” said Pedro.

Pan Peru also teaches women and their children some English and Microsoft Office, Apple software, and Outlook— as many women are single mothers and have children with HIV or Hepatitis.

In an effort to connect the many companies that support or volunteer with Pan Peru, Pedro hosts impact trips to Peru, Machu Picchu, the Amazon rainforest, the river in Peru, and community service trips.

“I think we can dream and dare to think the unthinkable to achieve outstanding results,” Pedro reiterates.

DIFFERENCES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The bilingual author wrote Differences that Make a Difference with Jorge Titinger and contributions from Eric Schmidt, Reed Hastings, and Dan Schulman.

Pedro interviewed 150 CEOs as writing contributors to address how inclusion fuels innovation—Baxter was the first CEO he approached because he was his first investor. Baxter introduced Pedro to four other CEOs, enhancing his community and network.

He is working on his second book called The Real ROI: Return on Inclu-

sion, which focuses more on the senior leadership board level—Michael Dell, John Hennessy, and James C. Morgan are some of the CEOs Pedro has interviewed.

Pedro is also launching a podcast called The Finish Line about the resilience of failing forward. Every week he will interview leaders like Carol Chris, the Chancellor of Berkeley; Monica Losano, the first Latina to be on the Board of Directors of Apple; and General David Petraeus, former director of the CIA.

Pedro David Espinoza es conferencista TED, empresario, inversor tecnológico y autor bilingüe. Nació y creció en Perú y se trasladó a Estados Unidos a los 18 años, con una beca para asistir a la Universidad de California, Berkeley, en San Francisco.

Notar la falta de representación en el campus obligó a Pedro a romper barreras para sobresalir: “Tenemos que trabajar más duro, el doble, el triple o el cuádruple, para estar al mismo nivel que nuestros homólogos”, dice y atribuye esto a la oportunidad de abrazar su herencia latina.

Su primer contacto profesional se produjo cuando era estudiante universitario. Mientras estaba en el Golden Bear Cafe de Berkeley, se fijó en un hombre mayor que llevaba traje y decidió acercarse a él. Tras las presentaciones de rigor y saber que se trataba de Frank Baxter, exembajador de Estados Unidos en Uruguay, exconsejero delegado de Jefferies & Company y miembro del Consejo de la Fundación de la Universidad de California en Berkeley, empezaron a conversar en español.

“Dos generaciones diferentes, etnias, partidos políticos, religiones, fe, estatus socioeconómico, redes... congeniamos”, explicó Pedro. “Le conté mi idea de startup, mi idea de empresa tecnológica. Me dio su tarjeta de visita y le hice seguimiento. Le envié boletines y correos electrónicos”, contó.

Pedro se tomó su tiempo para fomentar una relación con Frank, que iba a lanzar un seminario sobre historia cívica latinoamericana, pero no conocía a ningún estudiante internacional latinoamericano que pudiera asistir. Pedro ya tenía amigos de República Dominicana, Puerto Rico, Brasil, Venezuela, Chile y Perú y decidió invitarlos a todos al seminario.

“No necesitas un título para ser un líder. No hace falta ser CEO para ayudar a otro CEO”, subrayó Pedro. Agregó que “la clave para mí fue verle como un ser humano, como un amigo, olvidando que es un CEO multimillonario, una persona poderosa”.

Pedro nunca imaginó que Baxter se convertiría en una pieza clave de su empresa, al solidificar la importancia de la creación de redes y el patrocinio.

SOÑAR EN PORCENTAJES

El rechazo de JP Morgan, Deloitte y McKenzie llevó a Pedro a replantearse sus planes de buscar empleo. “Nadie parece interesarse por mí ni me considera deseable o empleable”, dice Pedro refiriéndose a su imposibilidad para conseguir empleo o ser considerado para innumerables prácticas.

Tras asistir a un curso de emprendimiento tecnológico en Stanford, durante el verano de su primer año, pasó de soñar en porcentajes a convertirse en el porcentaje de los pocos emprendedores inmigrantes latinos en Estados Unidos capaces de crear una empresa tecnológica de éxito.

A los 19 años, lanzó su primera empresa tecnológica, SmileyGo, una aplicación que indexaba los datos de 1,3 millones de organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, además de tener usuarios en más de 25 países. Fue respaldada por Baxter, el primer inversionista de la empresa.

Como CEO y fundador, Pedro se encargó de recaudar capital y contratar a más de 30 personas. Estuvo en el programa hispano Shark Tank y en Univisión en Español, así como en innumerables plataformas de medios de comunicación, hablando de SmileyGo y fomentando relaciones con posibles inversores a través de la creación de redes.

Más tarde, creó otra empresa, esta vez de consultoría, para trabajar con Google, Oracle, Amazon y Microsoft como conferencista TED y orador principal. “Me convertí en un emprendedor de éxito, autor y conferenciante, a través del fracaso, a través de sentirme cómodo al sentirme incómodo”, aseguró Pedro.

“Hay que ser agnóstico en cuanto al sector: invertir en vehículos autónomos, como Kiwi; en tecnología de seguros, como Noyo: en tecnología jurídica, como Paladin, o en tecnología musical, como Feed FM”, afirmó Pedro.

Señaló también que “como inversor de capital riesgo, como inversor tecnológico, tienes que invertir en el potencial y en el carácter del emprendedor”. Se trata del equipo, los valores, el potencial y de si los emprendedores tienen o no las agallas y la resiliencia para reconstruirse.

Su naturaleza enfática hizo que el visionario se centrara en la accesibilidad, la innovación y la sostenibilidad, creando Pan Perú, una empresa que empodera a las mujeres para que se conviertan en empresarias.

que fue al graduarse de la Universidad de Berkeley con una Licenciatura en Administración de Empresas con especialización en Emprendimiento Tecnológico, completar un Certificado en Gestión Internacional de la Universidad de Stanford y ser parte de la clase 2023 del Programa de Analítica Empresarial de Harvard.

Por ello, utilizar Pan Perú para “ayudar a mujeres, específicamente latinas, hispanas a convertirse en empresarias”, en su país de origen, es sumamente especial e importante para él.

“Cuando inviertes en las mujeres de un país, de un pueblo, de una comunidad, esta crece y se desarrolla”, dijo. Asimismo, contó que “empezamos el programa con una emprendedora, diseño de producto e ideación de marketing. Hoy tenemos casi 100 emprendedoras en el programa”. Su objetivo es llegar a diez mil.

Según el empresario, el 2021 marcó la fuente de ingresos más exitosa de Pan Perú: el comercio electrónico, que ayudó a las empresarias a sacar diferentes productos de alpaca, suéteres y bufandas, ayudándolas a hacer crecer su negocio en línea.

También a partir del poder de las redes para recaudar capital de empresas como Western Union, First Republic

Bank, Bristol Myers Squibb, Salesforce y muchas de la lista Fortune 500. Lo hace a través de subvenciones, cheques y donaciones para “ayudar a equipar a estas mujeres a hacer crecer sus LLC a través de microfinanzas, financiación y préstamos”.

Además de recaudar capital, Pan Perú ha construido diez laboratorios de informática y diez bibliotecas para ayudar a niñas y jóvenes a acceder a la educación STEM y aprender algo de Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook, JavaScript y diseño web. “Creo que cuando capacitamos a estas mujeres para que se conviertan en empresarias, estamos invirtiendo en su futuro”, manifestó.

Pan Perú también enseña a las mujeres y a sus hijos algo de inglés y Microsoft Office, software de Apple y Outlook, ya que muchas son madres solteras y tienen hijos con VIH o hepatitis.

En un esfuerzo por conectar a las muchas empresas que apoyan o colaboran como voluntarias con Pan Perú, Pedro organiza viajes de impacto a Perú -a Machu Picchu, a la selva amazónica y al río- y de servicio comunitario. “Creo que podemos soñar y atrevernos a pensar lo impensable

para lograr resultados extraordinarios”, reiteró.

DIFERENCIAS QUE MARCAN LA DIFERENCIA

Como autor bilingüe escribió Diferencias que marcan la diferencia, con Jorge Titinger. La obra incluye contribuciones de Eric Schmidt, Reed Hastings y Dan Schulman.

Pedro entrevistó a 150 consejeros delegados como colaboradores de redacción para abordar cómo la inclusión alimenta la innovación. Baxter fue el primer consejero delegado al que se dirigió porque fue su primer inversor. Además, presentó a Pedro a otros cuatro directores generales, lo que amplió su comunidad y su red de contactos.

Está trabajando en su segundo libro, The Real ROI: Return on Inclusion, más centrado en el nivel directivo superior. Michael Dell, John Hennessy y James C. Morgan son algunos de los CEO a los que ha entrevistado.

José Ignacio Valenzuela, better known as El Chascas, grew up in Chile in the 1980s, a country plunged into dictatorship, “a country quite black and white, where there was not much access to bookstores and libraries.” That’s why, while studying literature at university, he decided that he would become a writer and write all those books he would have liked to read, at five, seven, twelve, 14 years old..... “Writing for young people was a kind of revenge with life,” explains the renowned Chilean author and screenwriter based in Miami.

Known mainly for his juvenile novels and his telenovela scripts–among which ‘Quién mató a Sara’ and ‘Donde hubo fuego’ stand out–El Chascas has just published a novel for adults: ‘Gente como yo’/’People like me’ (Penguin Random House, February 2023), in which he wanted to capture a “very powerful, very intense” love story: That of a gay couple who decide to dream of the possibility of being parents, and how society and life in general, despite the advances that have been made for LGBTQ inclusion, still punishes or considers very conflictive the fact that two men or two women want to be parents.

“I wanted to try to resolve, at least in my head, that dilemma and that conflict,” explains El Chascas in an interview with AL DÍA from Miami, where he lives with his male partner and their four-year-old daughter.

The protagonists of ‘People Like Me’ are Mauricio, a handsome and sensitive Mexican who dreams of becoming a great photographer. And Jimmy, a university professor and passionate about politics, who lives in Miami. They fall in love and after thirteen years of a solid life as a couple, Jimmy poses the challenge of becoming parents and starting a family. The idea is to adopt a baby, but they know that society will not make it so easy for them.

“I know that my book is awakening a generalized feeling of indignation and surprise among my readers: ‘how can it be that in the 21st century questions such as love between two people of the same sex, or that they want to be parents or can change the life of a child simply because of prejudice or homophobia, are being discussed?’” he explains. “Readers realize what it is like to live without the most basic rights,” he adds.

Por eso, mientras estudiaba Literatura en la universidad, decidió que se convertiría en escritor y escribiría todos esos libros que le hubiera gustado leer, a los cinco, a los siete, a los doce, a los 14… “Escribir para jóvenes fue una suerte de revancha con la vida”, explica el reconocido autor y guionista chileno.

Conocido principalmente por sus novelas juveniles y por sus guiones de telenovelas — entre las que destacan Quién mató a Sara y Donde hubo fuego— el ‘Chascas’ acaba de publicar una novela para adultos: Gente como yo (Penguin Random House, febrero 2023), en la que quiso plasmar una historia de amor “muy poderosa, muy intensa”: la de una pareja de dos hombres que deciden soñar con la posibilidad de ser padres y cómo la sociedad y la vida en general, pese a los avances que se han hecho para la inclusión de los LGBTQ, sigue castigando o considerando

muy conflictivo el hecho de que dos hombres o dos mujeres quieran ser padres.

“Quise tratar de resolver, al menos en mi cabeza, ese dilema y ese conflicto”, dice el ‘Chascas’ en una entrevista con AL DÍA desde Miami, donde reside con su pareja y su hija de cuatro años.

Los protagonistas de Gente como yo son Mauricio, un mexicano guapo y sensible que sueña con convertirse en un gran fotógrafo, y Jimmy, profesor universitario y apasionado de la política, que vive en Miami. Se enamoran y después de trece años de una sólida vida como pareja, Jimmy plantea el reto de convertirse en padres y formar una familia. La idea es adoptar un bebé, pero saben que la sociedad no se lo pondrá tan fácil.

“Sé que mi libro está despertando entre mis lectores, sobre todo en Chile y México, un sentimiento generalizado de indignación y sorpresa: ¿cómo puede ser que en pleno siglo XXI se discuta cuestiones como el amor entre dos personas del mismo sexo o que éstas quieran ser padres o madres o puedan cambiar la vida de un niño simplemente por prejuicio o homofobia?”, cuenta.

Readers realize what it’s like to live without the most basic rights. Los lectores se dan cuenta de lo que es vivir sin los derechos más básicos.

On the other hand, the book also addresses all the issues related to adoption in the US.

“In a very direct and straightforward way, I explain how complicated it is to adopt, and even more so for a homosexual couple, due, for example, to the adoption conditions set by the countries of origin. This was not the case before. China, India, Russia used to be countries that were very allied with the LGBT community and since a few years ago it is no longer so, making the possibilities of adoption very difficult”, regrets the Chilean author, who has been living outside his country for more than 30 years.

A CRITICAL LOOK

Each of the places where he has lived have marked him in a different way. “Chile was my base, that’s where I was formed as a writer. Mexico opened me to the world, to a much more international writing. New York gave me the intensity and Puerto Rico gave me the skin, the body, the sensuality, the senses,” he says.

In Miami, his adopted home, his literature “has been contaminated, in a good way, by other contexts and points of view. It’s a very global place, very diverse, a real melting pot of different cultures,” he explains. And it is in Miami, and in general throughout Florida, “a state that is currently going backwards in leaps and bounds in terms of LGBTQ rights,” where he would especially like his book to generate some discussion or commentary.

“I want it to be read as a critical look at how a gay couple experiences homophobia and lack of freedom, in Florida especially,” he insists.

Although his day-to-day life in Miami runs happily between his routines as a writer and father of a four-year-old daughter, as a Latino in Florida he feels “terrible.”

“It seems to me that this state is becoming a laboratory of international neo-fascism. We have a governor who thinks he is a dictator, who increasingly restricts educational freedoms and personal liberties, who is in a declared war against evolution, against the black and LGBT community, against teachers, against the trans and drag queen community, against anything that represents a degree of freedom,” he says.

“As a gay man and a member of a single-parent family,”he concludes, “I am watching in horror as we are going back years and decades in terms of rights.”z

Por otro lado, el libro también aborda todos los temas relacionados con la adopción en Estados Unidos.

“De una manera muy directa y sin tapujos, explico cuán complicado es adoptar, y todavía más para una pareja homosexual, debido por ejemplo a las condiciones de adopción puestas por los países de origen. Esto antes no era así. China, la India, Rusia eran antes países muy aliados con la comunidad LGBTQ y desde hace unos años para acá ya no lo es, dificultando mucho las posibilidades de adopción”, lamenta el autor chileno, que lleva más de 30 años viviendo fuera de su país.

UNA MIRADA CRÍTICA

Cada uno de los lugares donde ha vivido le han marcado de forma distinta. “Chile fue mi base, allí me formé como escritor. México me abrió al mundo, a una escritura mucho más internacional. Nueva York me regaló la intensidad y Puerto Rico la piel, el cuerpo, la sensualidad, los sentidos”.

En Miami, donde vive ahora, su literatura se ha contaminado, en el buen sentido, de otros contextos y puntos de vista.

“Es un lugar muy global, muy diverso, un auténtico crisol de culturas distintas”, señala. Y es en Miami, y en general en toda Florida, “un estado que actualmente retrocede a pasos agigantados en términos de derechos LGBTQ”, donde le gustaría especialmente que su libro genere algún tipo de discusión o comentarios.

“Quiero que se lea como una mirada crítica a cómo una pareja gay experimenta la homofobia y la falta de libertad, en Florida sobre todo”, insiste.

Aunque su día a día en Miami transcurre felizmente entre sus rutinas como escritor y papá de una niña de cuatro años, como latino en Florida se siente “fatal”. “Me parece que este estado se está convirtiendo en un laboratorio del neofascismo internacional.

Tenemos un gobernador que se cree dictador, que cada vez más restringe libertades educacionales y libertades personales, que está en una guerra declarada contra la evolución, la comunidad negra y LGBTQ, contra los profesores, contra comunidad trans y drag queen, contra todo aquello que represente un grado de libertad”, dice.

“Como hombre gay e integrante de una familia monoparental” concluye, “estoy viendo con horror cómo estamos retrocediendo años y décadas en términos de derechos”. z

Three women, three generations and a mango tree. Crisscrossed by their memories, their old dreams, their traditions and their mythical ancestor in Venezuela’s Afro culture (Guiomar), All My Mothers Dream in Spanish paves the way for resistance, equality and integration.

AZ Espinoza’s play, produced by Azuka Theatre & Teatro del Sol, introduces a feisty and heroic queen gifted with the power of magic, who was able to pass on that same gift to her descendants: Maria Consuelo/Guiomar (character played by Keila Cordova), Maria Soledad/Guiomar (Taysha Marie Canales) and Camilla Marie/Guiomar (Cianna Castro).

On stage, this bilingual production is directed by José Avilés and highlights the lives of society’s marginalized by amplifying their voices through three female, non-binary and Afro-Latin dramaturgies. All My Mothers Dream in Spanish “focuses on diverse and deeply human characters and female protagonists grappling with their place in the world”, said Reva Stover, co-artistic director of the show with Rebecca May Flowers.

MAKING ‘THE INVISIBLE’ VISIBLE

Beyond the legacy and historical worldview that surrounds this play, its cast is aware of the heritage they convey: the representation of black Latinas in American theater, considered ‘a rarity’, even today. “Our stories are not told enough”, Taysha Marie Canales told AL DÍA.

She is supported in that same vision by Cordova, who, upon discovering the first pages of the script a couple of years ago, was immediately convinced that the world needed to know about this family. “Although I recognized the people in the

VISIBILIZAR ‘LO INVISIBLE’

Más allá del legado y la cosmovisión histórica que envuelven a esta obra, su elenco es consciente de la herencia que transmiten: la representación de las latinas negras en el teatro estadounidense, considerada ‘toda una rareza’ aún en los tiempos que corren. “Nuestras historias no se cuentan lo suficiente”, dijo Taysha Marie Canales a AL DÍA.

Está apoyada en esa misma visión por Cordova, quien, al descubrir las primeras páginas del guion hace un par de años, inmediatamente se convenció de que el mundo debía conocer esta familia. “Aunque reconocí a las personas en la obra, sabía que

play, I knew I hadn’t seen these characters portrayed before on stage or screen”.

All My Mothers Dream in Spanish also struck a chord with Castro, who felt that someone “finally saw her”: “For me as a child and for my peers, being black and being Latina was confusing. I felt like a glitch in the Matrix and this play erased that feeling”, she said.

For this reason, the three agree that productions like All My Mothers Dream in Spanish are necessary in the United States, a country that is unaware of the black diaspora not only in the Latino community, but also beyond its borders. “I think sometimes we recognize the racism in this country and completely overlook the colorism aspect. Colorism is an issue that I wish we would address more as a community. It also provides a perspective on the black experience outside of the United States. I think we

forget that blacks also exist and struggle outside of this country”, Castro added.

This poignant narrative that will leave no one indifferent, which in its world premiere promises to open minds, hearts and little-explored perspectives on the diaspora, can be seen at Philadelphia’s Proscenium Theatre at The Drake through Sunday, March 19th.

que los negros también existen y luchan fuera de este país”, agregó Castro.

The ethnoracial disparity that exists in the medical profession continues to be an alarming problem for the Latino physician community and patients seeking health care that fits their cultural contexts. However, few talk about how this same inequity also disrupts higher education and the future of young Latinos who aspire to become the nation’s next generation of physicians.

Keeping in mind the relevance of the Latino, Hispanic and Latinx student community in medicine, Dr. John Paul Sánchez, Executive Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the Health Sciences Center (HSC), University of New Mexico and Executive

Director of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), announced his interest in establishing the first bilingual and bicultural medical school in the mainland United States. He immediately began to receive support from medical school deans, students, professors and, above all, from the LMSA.

As Dr. Sánchez explained to AL DÍA, LMSA is the ideal organization to lead the creation and fundraising of the school thanks to its more than 50-year history and its efforts to unify all Latino medical students from different regions.

“LMSA is the only and oldest national organization dedicated to increasing the number of students of Latina/o/x/e,

His hope is that such a medical school would exist within three to five years. For now, the bulk of the work to make the institution possible is focused on raising the necessary money and assembling a team with the required academic knowledge and professional preparation.

Currently, Dr. Sánchez said Latino medical students collectively contribute roughly $500 million to medical schools for academic training in the United States. For him, this is a sign that Latinos have the economic capital to make the investment required for a medical school run by and for the Latino and Hispanic community.

During the most recent conference held by the LMSA Northeast Region at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Dr. Sánchez presented the idea of creating the first bilingual and bicultural mainland medical school to the students in attendance.

“What words/emotions come to mind when you think of the founding of this school?” asked Sánchez in one of the classrooms of the university where he made his presentation as executive director of LMSA. At the question, the students responded excitedly: “pride,” “representation,” “inspiration,” “equity,” “community,” “essential,” “exciting,” “culture,” and so on.

In 2022, 11.7% of allopathic medical students are Hispanic, as are 5.3% of faculty at institutions of higher education.

To provide some general context, according to the U.S. Census in 2022, 18.9% of the U.S. population identified themselves as Hispanic. However, only about 6% of the medical community identifies as Latino or Hispanic.

ABOUT DR. SÁNCHEZ

Dr. Sanchez is a Nuyorican born and raised in the Bronx. His mother is a native of Moca, in northeastern Puerto Rico, and his father is from Santa Isabel, a municipality located on the south coast of the island.

He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine,

where he completed his residency under the Jacobi/Montefiore program and was certified in emergency medicine.

He also holds a master’s degree in public health with a specialization in infectious disease epidemiology from Yale University.

For the past three years, he has worked in the HSC office for the University of New Mexico, where he excels in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion — issues he’s worked on for more than 25 years. He is one of the few Latino full professors with tenure at a medical school in the U.S. z

“We still have a long way to go in the city to be accepted in the private sector,” he said.

Nonetheless, he is proud of the progress that has been made.

Even after all these decades, his advocacy hasn’t wavered.

“All I wanted to do was to open the case for us,” said Díaz.

Six pillars mark the path of the actions of the Hispanic Promise. What are they? Seis pilares marcan el camino de las acciones de la Promesa Hispana. ¿De qué se trata?

Four years ago at Davos, the We Are All Human Foundation launched the Hispanic Promise — the first-ever corporate pledge to prepare, hire, promote, retain, celebrate, and buy from Hispanics. Since then, nearly 300 companies have signed and 30 Hispanic organizations, representing nearly 10 million Hispanics, are backing it.

Our work with companies these past few years has shown us that the drive to diversify continues to increase every year. But companies are finding that even when the purpose, goodwill and budgets are there, major challenges, gaps and difficulties in building successful DEI programs persist.

About a year ago, we put together a core team of companies and organizations, and asked the University of Chicago to play a role in helping us leverage our knowledge and our collective experience to create a framework that companies can use to activate and support their DEI activities. The new framework adds “teeth” to the Hispanic Promise — a roadmap with goals and metrics, best practices right down to activities that companies can deploy to realize their own unique strategies.

The framework will help companies build achievable goals and then support the objectives with a wealth of resources and tools, as well as a community of peers and DEI experts.

Our organizational principle continues to be influenced by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which provides the discipline of concrete but reachable goals — not meant to intimidate but inspire. We have organized the framework to support the pillars that uphold the Hispanic Promise.

In looking at DEI holistically, we felt our first pillar had to be “Prepare”. What we keep hearing from companies is how they can’t find people with the right skills or knowledge. We believe that companies need to plan for the future by investing in the Hispanic community. There is a definite link between social impact programs and future potential growth.

Hiring right now is a perennial concern, which is why our next pillar is “Hire”. Our goal with the framework is to actively cultivate Hispanic talent at all career levels. We are building a pipeline, making sure that recruitment extends to college and graduate schools.

The “Promote” pillar is often a source of pain for Latinos. And unattended to

becomes a problem of retention for companies, which is the next pillar, “Retain”. Young Latinos who join a company will make decisions on whether they stay or go based on whether they see Latinos rising up the corporate ladder. They aren’t going to complain; they are going to look for opportunities elsewhere. So, promotion and retention are intertwined.

The next pillar is “Celebrate”. Latinos still suffer from invisibility. We also know that Latinos feel that they have to hide their Latinidad.

Celebration of Latinos must be both internal — to recognize achievements and increase visibility. But it also must be external, so that we help drive systemic change that increases the positive perception of the Latino community.

The final pillar is “Invest/Buy”. One of the often-neglected pieces in the ecosystem is building a sustainable, diverse supply chain. The good news is that Latinos are hugely entrepreneurial — in fact, today, Latinos lead at building technology startups.

For every one of these pillars, we have resources, tools, access to experts and an ongoing community of participants who are sharing their best practices. In addition,, the Hispanic organizations that are aligned with the Hispanic Promise make it easier for companies to engage with the community, to build new partnerships, to strengthen the whole ecosystem.

Our first Hispanic Promise framework summit for Hispanic Promise on March 1st. A morning of presentations was followed by an afternoon of workshops and discussions. We are always driven by data, and this new iteration of the Hispanic Promise elevates the DEI pledge into a real, actionable plan. We feel the importance of the moment — and we feel the excitement of change.

This year’s Edelman Hispanic Trust Barometer continues to show that Latinos trust their companies and the NGO/ non-profit world to come up with solutions for societal challenges. We believe that the work we are doing creates a win for everyone — the community, Corporate America and our country. Be part of our change. z

Hace cuatro años, en Davos, la Fundación We Are All Human lanzó la Promesa Hispana, primer compromiso empresarial de la historia para preparar, contratar, promocionar, retener, celebrar y comprar a los hispanos. Nuestra primera cumbre marco de la Promesa Hispana tuvo lugar el primero de marzo. A una mañana de presentaciones siguió una tarde de talleres y debates. Siempre nos guiamos por los datos, y esta nueva iteración de la Promesa Hispana eleva la promesa de DEI a un plan real y factible. Sentimos la importancia del momento y la emoción del cambio.

In light of these statistics, it is clear that there is a need for more options to increase healthcare access for those who can’t afford it.

One solution that has gained traction in recent years is telemedicine, which allows patients to receive care remotely through video or phone consultations with healthcare providers. This can be especially beneficial for those who live in rural areas or have mobility issues, as it eliminates the need for them to travel to a doctor’s office or hospital. Telemedicine can also be more convenient and cost-effective for patients, as they may not need to take time off work or pay for transportation.

Virtual care is another option that can help increase healthcare access for those who can’t afford it. Virtual care refers to any type of healthcare service that is provided online or through a mobile device, such as apps or websites. This can include everything from virtual consultations with doctors or therapists to online prescription refills and appointment scheduling. Virtual care can be especially helpful for those who have limited access to healthcare providers in their area, as it allows them to connect with providers from anywhere.

Mobile devices are also playing a role in increasing healthcare access for those who can’t afford it. Many healthcare providers are now using apps or other mobile tools to help patients manage their health, track their progress, and communicate with their providers. For example, some apps allow patients to track their vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate, and send the results to their doctors. Other apps allow patients to schedule appointments, refill prescriptions, and access their medical records from their phones or tablets.
