CRUELTY COMES TO PHILLY

It was a cold, windy morning on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 30th Street Station. There, Philadelphia aid workers and a coalition of local immigrant rights nonprofits gathered with coats, warm sheets and other winter gear to greet a bus of migrants arriving from Del Rio, Texas, sent by human trafficker and Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

The bus arrived around 6 a.m. with 38 migrants on-board.

Press was kept at a distance as aid workers distributed the winter gear they had prepared. Coming from the Texas border, some migrants got off the bus in just t-shirts and shorts, welcomed to Philadelphia by a close-to-freezing wind chill.

WELCOMED WITH BROTHERLY LOVE

Sources involved in the supporting operation to welcome migrants told AL DÍA they had been preparing over the priorweekend and had organized refuge and services to be immediately available upon arrival. What groups knew from previous migrant diversions is that Philadelphia could eventually become a target of Abbott’s political game.

Over that same weekend, it was first reported that a bus of migrants would arrive on Monday, Nov. 14. When contacted by Philadelphia press, Abbott’s office denied sending any migrant bus to Philadelphia — focusing on its prior E ra una mañana fría y ventosa el miércoles 16 de noviembre, en la estación de la calle 30. Fuentes implicadas en la operación de apoyo para acoger a los inmigrantes dijeron a AL DÍA que se habían estado preparando durante el fin de semana anterior y que habían organizado el refugio y los servicios para que estuvieran disponibles inmediatamente a su llegada. Lo que los grupos sabían por los anteriores desvíos de inmigrantes es que Filadelfia podría llegar a ser un objetivo del juego político de Abbott.

“It was only logical that Philadelphia, being a sanctuary city, was going to be a destination for these migrants who are looking for an opportunity in this country,” said Emilio Buitrago, co-founder of Casa de Venezuela, a nonprofit organization providing a series bilingual services to Philadelphia’s Hispanic population.

“They’re looking for security and protection. A place where they can raise their families in a safe way. They’re not looking for government handouts,” Buitrago underlined.

A coalition of groups had organized in tandem with the city to adequately prepare for what may have been an inevitable and unfortunate reality for refugees. And despite Abbott’s vacillating position on whether a bus was destined to Philly, Buitrago wasn’t concerned.

“We were ready. What’s important about this is that we were ready. The city of Philadelphia is a place that opens its doors to immigrants, and it’s like they say in English, diversity is our strength,” Buitrago added.

In addition to warm clothing, informational sheets were given to migrants before they boarded one of two SEPTA buses prepared to take them to shelter

Coalition participants said the city was key in setting preparations in motion, in activating several branches of government to ensure services were readily available.

“I am very proud of our city,” said city councilwoman Helen Gym.

Gym arrived early in the morning and engaged in the site’s logistics. She could be seen moving boxes and speaking with advocates.

Eso era mentira. “Era lógico que Filadelfia, siendo una ciudad santuario, iba a ser un destino para estos migrantes que están buscando una oportunidad en el país”, dijo Emilio Buitrago, cofundador de Casa de Venezuela, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que proporciona servicios bilingües a la población hispana de Filadelfia. “Buscan seguridad y protección. Un lugar donde puedan criar a sus familias de forma segura. No buscan dádivas del Gobierno”. Una coalición de grupos se ha organizado junto con la ciudad para prepararse adecuadamente para lo que podría ser una realidad inevitable y desafortunada para los refugiados. Y a pesar de la posición vacilante de Abbott sobre si un autobús estaba destinado a Filadelfia, Buitrago no estaba preocupado. “Lo importante es que estábamos preparados. La ciudad de Filadelfia es un lugar que abre sus puertas a los inmigrantes; como dicen en inglés, ‘La diversidad es nuestra fuerza’”, añadió Buitrago.

Además de ropa abrigada, se entregaron hojas informativas a los inmigrantes antes de que subieran a uno de los dos autobuses de SEPTA preparados para llevarlos al refugio. Los participantes de la coalición dijeron que la ciudad fue clave en la puesta en marcha de los preparativos, en la activación de varias ramas del Gobierno para asegurar que los servicios estuvieran fácilmente disponibles. “Estoy muy orgullosa de nuestra ciudad”, dijo la concejala Helen Gym.
