light the night The Auto Club Speedway held the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night event, which our clubbers were fortunate to participate in. The Society holds this event throughout the United States and Canada, in order to raise money to fight cancer. The event had other fun activities besides the walk, such as: food trucks, live music, a kids zone, a wine and beer festival, and a safe zone for children to go trick-or-treating. Clubbers volunteered at this unique night event by standing along the walking routes to pass out products, cheer on walkers, and to make sure that everything ran smoothly. During the walk. walkers carried lanterns of different colors to essentially “light the night.” These colors included red for supporters of the cause, white for parents and patients affected by cancer, and gold for memory of those who passed with cancer. “The lights were beautiful and the symbolism behind it was touching,” says one volunteer. After the event was finished, volunteers then aided in clean up.

,*8"/*4 Upland Kiwanis hosted a parade this past month to commemorate veterans for their service on Veteran’s Day. Members’ help was a crucial aspect to the success of the event. First, clubbers helped in set-up by unfolding and tables and chairs, where they also distributed and organized snacks at each table. They then walked through the parade route to set up barricades and to put up “no parking” signs along the way. Members also used their strength to move ice bags to fill coolers, later transferring beverages into the compartments. A ceremony was held during the event, and afterward clubbers helped serve food and drinks to the people. After the event came to a close, members helped by cleaning up. Finally, they collected trash and put away chairs, tables and canopies. Although the Veteran’s Day event was longer than expected, Alta Loma Key Clubbers still had fun making friends with Upland Clubbers and were more than honored to have helped serve the veteran community.

Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization that is “dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with [intellectual and developmental disabilities].” The annual Best Buddies Friendship Walk that took place in Central Park of Rancho Cucamonga was held to raise funds to provide the tools necessary for people with disabilities to become “more independent and values members of our society.”

Clubbers met up with the Best Buddies Club from our school at a booth, where they organized a bean bag toss. They helped the Best Buddies Club by handing people bean bags and giving them candy afterward. Everyone was then gathered to listen to various stories and announcements of how Best Buddies has impacted the lives with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. Similarly to Key Club, the Best Buddies organization had spirit cheers to chant also! Clubbers were invited to walk with our school’s Best Buddies Club, where our school made noise using balloon sticks while chanting, “Our best buddies are the buddies for you and me, ALTA! LOMA!” After completing the two mile pathway, clubbers returned to the booth and continued to facilitate the bean bag toss for candy and bookmarks. Ending the four hour event duration, members helped in cleaning up the booth. “It was fantastic seeing so many people from the community, schools, and clubs come together [to] raise money...and [have] fun together as people got to [meet, talk, and make friends] with people in Best Buddies,” Abdon Zavaleta says. At the end of the day, the organization raised over $14 thousand dollars toward their cause!
