WELCOME
T
he smiling faces, the people dancing, and the families singing along to the songs. Every year, the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea offers up an idyllic scene in an idyllic setting. If only every day on Cape Cod could be this perfect. That is our wish. Of course, it never is. Despite outward appearances, the Cape faces many of the same challenges and difficulties that larger, more urban centers do. Hidden behind our picturesque seashores and tucked far away from our tony oceanfront mansions is the harsh reality that there are many in our region who are struggling just to get by. Anecdotally, we witnessed this reality at the end of July when we visited the Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich to learn more about arts and crafts classes for clients’ children that we funded through a recent grant. When we arrived before 10 am on a Saturday morning, there was a line of people waiting to get in to receive free food they cannot afford to buy themselves. Adults aren’t the only ones who are suffering. In Barnstable Public Schools, half of the over 5,200 students receive free or reduced-rate lunches. Roughly 40 percent of the 1,199 students in the DennisYarmouth Public School District are classified as economically disadvantaged by the state Department of Education. And slightly less than 35 percent of the 120 students in Provincetown’s school system fall into that same category. While alarming, these statistics reinforce what we already know: there are many in need on Cape Cod. What does this have to do with the Pops? Your attendance at this year’s concert is helping to fund a new cultural program we will be launching this fall — AFCC Access — which is targeted to children between the ages of 7 and 17 who live at or below the poverty level. We will be partnering with several organizations, including Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Cape Cod Child Development; YMCA Achievers; Grandparents Raising Grandchildren on Cape Cod; and local church groups, to offer cultural and artistic enrichment opportunities to our region’s most impoverished students. Research shows that exposure to the arts has a positive effect on children. It boosts self-confidence, serves as a gateway for socialization, and enhances creative thinking. And much like tonight’s concert, the arts provide moments of joy. In our current sociopolitical climate, we think we can all agree our world needs more of that. So while not every day on Cape Cod will be as perfect as today, AFCC Access strives to reach that goal because we think our children deserve it. May this year’s Pops be full of smiles, dancing, and singing for all of us.

A LET TER FROM JERRY SARGENT

Julie Wake and Jerry Sargent
or over thirty years, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod has welcomed one of the nation’s finest and best-loved musical ensembles — the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra — to the Hyannis Village Green. At Citizens Bank, we are immensely proud to continue our support as presenting sponsor again in 2018. We believe strongly that citizenship is at the heart of who we are, rooted in the belief that when people and communities reach their potential, we all thrive. This concert is a special event which draws thousands of people to the Hyannis Village Green and speaks to the exceptional work that the Arts Foundation does to bring public art, music and other activities to Cape Cod and the Islands. It’s our privilege to take our place alongside the Arts Foundation to celebrate this event which goes a long way to strengthen individuals, families, and businesses. While we are active in the community throughout the Cape and Islands, Pops By The Sea is something that our colleagues and customers from the Cape and beyond look forward to. The Cape is a special place any time of year, but especially during the summer, it is great to be part of Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea and to welcome this concert to Hyannis. We’re able to connect with customers and colleagues during the concert and share this great experience that is open for everyone to attend. In my role as Massachusetts President for Citizens Bank, I travel around to different community events and I also spend a lot of time meeting with clients throughout the state, but there is something magical about visiting the Cape for a Pops concert on a warm summer evening. The guest conductor always adds an element of excitement and energy to the concert. I have personally enjoyed the wide range of guest conductors, such as the Emmy award-winning Blythe Danner to Blue Man Group. But once again, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod hit a home run with Dermot Mulroney participating in this year’s concert. His talent as an actor and musician is a thrilling addition to the Boston Pops and Maestro Keith Lockhart. As you enjoy the Pops tonight, I do want to acknowledge the great work that the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod has done to increase access to the arts for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities here on Cape Cod. We are proud to strongly support their work and their efforts to bring truly life changing experiences to as many people as possible. Best,
Jerry Sargent

Honorary Chair Jane Walsh
COMMIT TED TO A VIBR ANT CAPE COD
T
his December will mark Red Fish Blue Fish’s 25-year anniversary on Hyannis’ Main Street. During that time, owner Jane Walsh has shown her commitment to the arts, starting with her business which initially only sold work by local artists before expanding to include artists from around the country. When asked why she made the conscious decision to support Cape Cod artisans, the Honorary Chair for the 33rd Annual Pops by the Sea says, “I’m an artist myself… I make glass jewelry. And a lot of my friends are artists so when I first opened, it was an outlet to showcase my friends’ works. It just seemed to make sense.” In recent years, Walsh has taken her commitment a step further when she started to represent local artists, helping to get their work into stores and galleries throughout the region. “By doing that, it has really boosted their careers,” she says. “I don’t mind helping people out. I want everyone to be successful.” Perhaps most notably, Walsh has helped transform downtown Hyannis into a family-friendly cultural hub, complete with live bands, jugglers, stilt walkers, face
painters, inflatable slides and bounce houses, free food, dance contests, exercise classes, and more. The block party, known better as Hyannis Open Streets, has been taking place four times a year since the fall of 2016. “I started that as a way to bring the community together in a fun, friendly, safe, healthy environment,” explains Walsh. In many ways, Hyannis Open Streets represent a throwback to simpler times when technology was not as prevalent in society as it is today. “I’m a big community person,” she says. “I like to see people talking with each other… I think we can all offer something to each other to make this world a better place.” As Hyannis Open Streets continues to grow and evolve, Walsh is embracing her community’s latest artistic venture, serving as Vice President of the Board for the Hyannis International Film Festival, which will debut in October. Despite her busy schedule, Walsh explains her involvement in these types of events that enrich the community: “I’m a big fan of people doing creative things on Cape Cod, whether it’s in art, film, or music.”

I
Dermot Mulroney Fulfills Lifetime Goal at the Pops
f you ever doubt the impact that exposure to the arts can have on a child, then look no further than Dermot Mulroney. “I’m living proof of it,” he says. “I had parents who took me to the symphony and the museum and passed on a love of culture and arts to me that is still fully enriching my life. “There is no way to ignore the benefits and the mind expansion music and other forms of expression bring,” he continues. “I never pictured I’d receive this amount of reward for loving music and the arts. I can’t believe my blessings.” Those blessings can be attributed directly to an acting career that has spanned more than three decades. While it was his portrayal of “Dirty Steve” Stephens in “Young Guns” in 1988 that put Mulroney in the public eye, his talent — he has more than 100 acting credits that include “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “About Schmidt,” and “August: Osage County,” — has kept him there. Though he is known best for his work on television and film, his first love was not acting, but music, making him a perfect choice to serve as a guest conductor for this year’s 33rd Annual Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea. He picked up the cello at a young age in his hometown of Alexandria, Virginia, studying under Loran Stephenson, a cellist with the National Symphony Orchestra. By the time he was in high school, he was performing in a half-dozen orchestras; he continued to play as a member of the college orchestra at Northwestern University. After he graduated in 1985, he temporarily put his music career on hold, opting to pursue one that has allowed him to transform into a variety of different characters in front of the camera. As to what he loves about the craft, he says, “it’s those real moments you’re seeking as an actor, when you’re not thinking about the lines or the director or what the scene needs.” Those moments of truth, he says, represent “the grail you seek on a daily basis.” While he continues his search for those moments, he has rediscovered his passion for music, initially with his former band The Low & Sweet Orchestra and at present with Cranky George, which includes his brother Kieran, record producers Brad Wood and Sebastian Sheehan Visconti, and James Fearnley of The Pogues. More notably, he has combined his love of music and film as
a member of composer Michael Giacchino’s trusted orchestra, starting with “Mission: Impossible III,” playing cello on the movie soundtrack. The pair’s relationship has since blossomed with Mulroney tapped to lend his talents on several of Giacchino’s subsequent scores, including “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and most recently “Incredibles 2.” When asked about the similarities between acting and playing music, Mulroney says, “you’re constantly seeking to improve yourself,” which is “a great way to think about anything” in life. On August 12th, Mulroney will take another step towards selfimprovement when he pulls double duty — marking a first for the Pops — serving both as a guest conductor and as a musician. It will represent a professional highlight in a life filled with them. “To be honest with you, one of my lifetime goals is to conduct in front of a real orchestra,” Mulroney says. “It is a real genuine, pinnacle moment for me as a lifelong classical musician. I always pictured myself doing it, and now it is coming to pass.”
“To be honest with you, one of my lifetime goals is to conduct in front of a real orchestra.” —Dermot Mulroney 10

Cape Provides Holland with Artistic Inspiration
J
Jeffrey Bilezikian, new owner of the Jim Holland Pops by the Sea commemorative painting, which he bid on and won at the AFCC’s Spring Soirée in June
im Holland’s parents had been retired and living on Cape Cod for more than a decade when he decided to follow them and pursue his art career full-time in 1995. Born in Schenectady, New York, Holland was drawn to the Cape for the reason that many are — its unparalleled beauty, which has served as a backdrop for the majority of his stunning works. As to why the Cape is a central figure in his paintings, he explains it this way: “I think it started with just the light at the shore… It is so open the light is so unimpeded. The landscape is open and I just love the play of the light near the water.” So it should come as no surprise that those two elements — light and water — play an important role in Holland’s Pops by the Sea commemorative painting, “A Summer Air” which depicts a cello resting gently against a white chair, both sitting on the grass against the backdrop of the ocean. The piece included another favorite subject of Holland’s — a chair. “I’ve always been a fan of the architectural element of chair and lights hitting chairs,” he says. “I’ve done dozens of paintings of light hitting lifeguard chairs and chairs in my house so I wanted to add something that would bring a musical motif. When the cello came in, they worked perfectly together… They suggest the musician is there and tie you into the motif of the concert.”
Prior to embarking on the project, Holland had no idea that this year’s guest conductor, Dermot Mulroney, is a cellist and will play the instrument at the 33rd annual Pops. Perhaps it is karma that led Holland to be chosen as this year’s Pops by the Sea commemorative artist. Julie Wake, AFCC executive director, prefers to look at it another way. “Jim’s talent speaks for itself,” she says. “That’s why he was a perfect choice for the Pops. He added a layer of beauty and simplicity to this year’s work which serves as a reminder that we all are lucky to live in such an awe-inspiring place where creativity can flourish.” Holland, she says, is a perfect example of that. A graphic designer by trade, he graduated from Dutchess Community College and worked for an ad agency as an art director for 15 years before he made the jump from the corporate world to the creative one. Over the past 30 years, he has embraced the life of a painter on Cape Cod — he lives in Brewster with filmmaker Allison Argo — where his work is constantly evolving as he looks for new ways to portray the beauty of this place he proudly calls home. “This is where my subject matter tends to be,” he says. “Although I’ve done paintings of other parts of the Northeast, I live here so this is where the bulk of my inspiration comes from.”
Jim Holland’s work can be viewed online at www.jimholland-art.com and can be found in person at Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, North Water Gallery in Edgartown, and Powers Gallery in Acton.

Patron Highlight
Cathy and Mike Castano and Katie and Mark Clancy at the AFCC’s Spring Soirée
W
hile the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea is the largest fundraiser for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC), it’s not the only way the cultural nonprofit raises funds to support its work. In recent years, the AFCC has been able to not only bolster, but expand its programming thanks to dedicated patrons like Cathy and Mike Castano of Sandwich and Katie and Mark Clancy of South Dennis. The Clancys were the first of the two couples — not only are they friends, but Mike and Mark are business partners, owning the custom building firm Clancy & Castano — to show their commitment to the AFCC by becoming patrons. In that capacity, they provide a consistent, sustained source of revenue that allows the AFCC to fulfill its mission to support, promote, advocate, and celebrate the arts and culture scene on Cape Cod. For Katie, a realtor with The Cape House, becoming a patron was a no-brainer. “I’m a musician so I love the arts and understand their importance,” she says. She and her husband have also been inspired by the agency’s current leadership which has embarked on several new programs, such as the Creative Exchange and AFCC Access, that have added to the cultural vibrancy of the region. “They are always looking to do something new and different and integrating arts in different parts of the community in new ways that haven’t been done before,” she says.
Knowing the Castanos share in their passion for supporting the arts, the Clancys were able to easily convince the couple to join the Patron Program. While it gives the Clancys and the Castanos the satisfaction of knowing they are supporting a worthy cause, the program also lets them see where their money is going. Last year, patrons had an opportunity to take part in a special behind-the-scenes tour of Heritage Museums & Gardens and its outdoor art installation, Points of View, which was partially funded through an AFCC grant. Patrons have toured Highfield Hall in Falmouth; met this year’s Pops by the Sea commemorative artist, Jim Holland; and enjoyed appetizers, cocktails and music at a members-only party at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. The gatherings are part social, part educational, and part inspirational. “There is always an event which is enjoyable and gives you something to look forward to, especially in the winter on the Cape” says Cathy. “You’re able to get out and see what is happening with the arts.” The Patron Program is also invaluable for working professionals like the Castanos and the Clancys. Several times, Katie says, they have brought clients to patron events for obvious reasons. “We don’t bring clients every time, but when we do, they get a pulse on what is going on in the arts world,” she says. “It makes me love where I live even more… And it makes us look like rock stars.”

WINTER ART TR ANSFORMING STUDENTS INTO ENGAGED LEARNERS
Over 35 Cape Cod artists participated in Winter Art, the annual AFCC member art exhibit held at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, interpreting this year’s theme of “Sensory Overload.” In 2019, Winter Art will enter its 12th year, with established and emerging artists tackling a new theme, “Bon Appetit.” The exhibit will open in January, 2019 with an invitation-only reception and will run through February. Each year, local schools bring hundreds of students to visit the exhibit. The art is displayed at a lower height — right at children’s eye level — and some of the artists drop in to discuss their works with the students as they tour the exhibit. The visit is accompanied by a hands-on workshop in the Art Barn, where students create their own piece inspired by the exhibition.

Music as a Form of Therapy
thought you were in your 70s,” marvels Dorothy Burritt, the director for the Eastham Council on Aging. “I could be 70,” Max responds, not missing a beat. As to Max’s secret for maintaining a youthful appearance and outlook on life, he doesn’t reveal it. Perhaps for Max, it may be the arts — specifically, singing — that is the answer. “Music is one of the great things that keeps us going,” he acknowledges. Max, who lives in Brewster, is one of nearly 20 local seniors who sing with fourth and fifth graders at the Eastham Elementary School, twice a month, from September through June at the Council on Aging’s Gathering Place Day Center. Dubbed the ReMemorable Multigenerational Chorus of Cape Cod, the program represents a collaboration between the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, the Eastham Council on Aging, and the Eastham Public Schools. This fall, the chorus will enter its fourth year, and according to Melanie Braverman, co-founder and cultural director of the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center, it may be the only one of its kind in the entire country. “We haven’t heard of any others like this,” she says. “There are a lot of choruses for people with Alzheimer’s, but nothing for those with dementia that includes kids.” For the students, the activity not only educates them about Alzheimer’s, but gives them the opportunity to interact with those who may be suffering from the condition. “It really helps the children not to be so afraid of the disease,” Braverman says. Eileen Poitras, the Eastham Elementary School music teacher, says for several students those fears have been replaced with something more powerful — a desire to give back. “It’s been such a wonderful experience,” she says. “Some of the kids have started to volunteer, going over there and helping out with the seniors… They’ve started some friendships with them as well as singing songs. It’s been kind of neat to see.” For the adults, the chorus has shown that cognitive therapy is beneficial for those who may be experiencing memory loss. “This
artsfoundation.org
is helping us demonstrate to the world, in a way, that people with cognitive diseases can certainly learn new things,” Braverman says. As far as the singing, Poitrays says, it elicits joy from those young and old. Brianna LePage, the program manager for the day center, serves as the choral director. Joining her at the sessions is her mother, Brenda Silva, who accompanies the chorus on the piano. Like the singers, the songs cross generations and include everything from Doris Day’s “Que Sera, Sera” to Katy Perry’s “Fight Song.” As they belt out the lyrics to these songs together, it’s not uncommon to see smiles come across the faces of those in the chorus. A grant from the AFCC helped fund this year’s program, something that Braverman says is crucial to showing the benefits the arts have for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. “So many people think of the arts as dispensable and that’s why they are often first on the chopping block,” she says. “But we know through this [chorus] how vitally important they are to the life of a community.”

Artists Through the Years Since 1988, 31 individual artists from around the Cape have been tapped to interpret what the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea means to them. These artistic representations have made their way onto canvas, serving as a reminder that the Pops is more than just a concert held once a year, every August. The Pops is a celebration of Cape Cod and the influence that arts and culture have on our region. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into some of the awe-inspiring Pops by the Sea commemorative paintings. Each is as different and as wonderful as the artist who painted it, and they are emblematic of the talent and creativity that abounds in our little, beautiful corner of the state.

Creative Outlets
I
nside the Cape Cod Museum of Art on the second Sunday of July, there’s lots of laughter, plenty of smiles, and even a few hugs to go around as a group of eight students put the finishing brush marks on their 3-D artwork. This is what childhood is supposed to look like. And it’s the intention of a new program, Creative Outlets, whose aim is to take at-risk youth between the ages of 12 and 16 and offer them opportunities to express themselves artistically through structured projects that include messy art, Afro-Cuban drumming, cooking, acting and improv, creating papier-mâché monsters, and writing. Over the course of three, six-week sessions, students meet for four hours on successive Sundays to take part in creative workshops led by area artists. They are joined by a therapist, who facilitates discussion at the beginning and end of each class. Started in April, the impetus for Creative Outlets was Sharon Leder, the daughter of a heroin-addicted father who died from an overdose when she was only a child. Last year, she chronicled the pain of that life-changing moment in the novel, “The Fix: A Father’s Secrets, A Daughter’s Search.” Writing and talking about the book served as a form of catharsis for Leder. But she wanted to do more, so together with Benton Jones, education and outreach coordinator at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, and several local psychiatrists, guidance counselors, and educators, they created the framework for this pilot program.
44
“With the opioid epidemic becoming a greater problem, we realized trying to deal with the problem directly would be an incredible achievement,” says Jones. “Even if we could affect one person’s life, it would justify Sharon’s struggle.” Leder has used proceeds from her book to help fund Creative Outlets, which has also received support from the AFCC. Jones stresses that the goal of the program is preventative, particularly at an age when children, out of boredom, anxiety, or peer pressure, may be tempted to make choices that could negatively impact their lives. “We want Creative Outlets to be a safe place where these kids have some stability and calm and can take part in fun activities,” he says. “This is a bit of an oasis from all the stressors where they’re not being graded or judged.” That is exactly what several children mention when asked about the program in July. “I like the freedom of creativity,” says Fiona, a soon-to-be sixth grader. “I get to express myself in ways that I can’t otherwise do,” says 15-year-old June. For Sophie, who will be entering seventh grade, creating art has “actually been calming for me,” she says. “And we always have fun,” Jesse, 14, chimes in. Here, inside the Cape Cod Museum of Art, kids are allowed to be kids — relax, have fun, and express themselves creatively — without any of the temptations of modern society. This is what childhood is supposed to look like.

Lockhart Promises Something New, Something Old, Something Fun
I
n 2013, Blythe Danner’s guest conducting duties extended into reading excerpts about President John F. Kennedy. Just one year prior, Jim Belushi had taken the conductor’s baton and added his own twist — actually, a standing back flip — to the job. This summer, Dermot Mulroney will inject his own personality into the honorary post when he plays the cello. For Maestro Keith Lockhart, the longtime conductor of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, it will mark a significant milestone in Pops by the Sea history. “It’s the first time in my memory, and possibly the first time ever, the Pops has had a musician as accomplished as Dermot who has brought something to the table musically,” says Lockhart. Mulroney is slated to perform “The Swan” from Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals”, a piece that Lockhart describes as “perfect for a summer afternoon in Hyannis.” Adding to the festiveness of this year’s Pops is a tribute to Leonard Bernstein, who would have turned 100 on August 25th. Cape Cod will join in on the global celebration, dubbed Leonard Bernstein at 100, with an ode to the iconic composer whose ties ran deep in Massachusetts. “He was from Lawrence, educated at Boston Latin and Harvard and maintained a close relationship with the Boston
artsfoundation.org
Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood, where our teaching center is,” says Lockhart. Bernstein’s debut with a professional orchestra occurred with the Boston Pops Orchestra in July 1941. “There’s a good tie-in and we’re going to be playing some music from his most beloved works including ‘Candide’ and ‘West Side Story,” Lockhart says. What made Bernstein truly special was “the multi-faceted nature of his genius,” says Lockhart. “He was not just a composer. If he had just done ‘West Side Story’ everyone would still know his name, but he also created significant works for the concert stage and he is also perhaps the foremost conductor as well as interpreter and creators of music. And he served to educate and inspire people about the importance of the arts in their lives.” Fans of classic rock will be entertained by an arrangement of Led Zeppelin songs that are new to this year’s Pops. And with guest performer Aubrey Logan bringing her unique mix of jazz, soul, and R&B, Lockhart promises Cape audiences that “we’ll hit every musical taste possible... You know we always try to do something fun for the crowd. Every year, it’s a great party down there on the Hyannis Village Green.”

Aubrey Logan Achieves Childhood Dream
N
ine years ago, Aubrey Logan stood onstage at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade with the vocal quartet Syncopation, performing alongside the Boston Symphony Orchestra on the 4th of July. At the time, she was a would-be senior, studying at the Berklee College of Music with dreams of one day becoming a singer, musician, and entertainer. Those dreams started at a young age for the Seattle native. “I don’t know that I ever had any interest in anything else,” the former American Idol contestant says. “I always had the urge to perform.” She first embraced musical theater before turning to jazz when she started taking trombone lessons at the age of 12. That’s when artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, and Whitney Houston held sway over her, eventually serving as an influence for her own music which combines jazz, R&B, pop, neo-soul, and rock. It would not be until after she graduated from Berklee and moved to Los Angeles that she began to realize her dreams, fully immersing herself into her career. “All my eggs went into the artist basket at that time,” she says. “That’s where I met my manager. It’s where I met several of my musical heroes and learned from them, watched them, and started to play tiny little clubs and would guest on shows, anything I could do to perform; sometimes I’d perform in front of five hundred people and other times I’d perform in front of five people.” Less than a year after the release of her first album, “Impossible,” which hit both the Billboard Charts and iTunes Jazz Charts as an independent artist, Logan is now in a place her younger self once dreamed of being. Having appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show and performed with such stars as Pharrell Williams and Josh Groban, Logan’s star continues to rise. In the midst of that ascent, as well as her current tour with Dave Koz & Friends, she will showcase her talents to Pops audiences on August 12th. It will give her a rare moment to “breathe and enjoy and be grateful for where I am at,” she says. And it will also serve as a reminder of just how
far she has come since that summer evening when she first performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra nine years ago. For Logan, there’s no place she would rather be. “It is wonderful to perform with an orchestra,” she says. “There is always a period where you feel like you are flying when you are singing and you feel like they are lifting you. What makes it so exciting is when the orchestra plays and there’s this really loud crescendo and then it suddenly stops. There’s a moment when the singer is singing the lines alone. That deep contrast is so profound.”

2018 Fellows
S
Three winners will use separate awards to individually produce a Christmas album; pen a novel about a hermit; and paint a portrait series of Caribbean families living on the Outer Cape
ince 2014, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) has provided fellowships to working artists in the region as a way to nurture their talents and support projects that reflect their creativity. Each year, the submissions the AFCC receives showcase the artistry that abounds in this section of the state. “I wish I could share all the applications with everybody,” AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake says. “You wouldn’t believe the caliber of work being done here. It’s so impressive.” As in previous years, fellowships were given out in three categories: Written Word, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts. Each received $1,500 to support their creative talents. This year’s fellows, Wake says, “are each so different and they embody the great work being done by our Cape Cod artists. They are doing work that the rest of our community needs to know about. It’s really important work and it’s being done here on the Cape.”
SUSAN BLOOD (WRITTEN WORD)
Juggling multiple day jobs that include serving as the marketing director for the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater (WHAT), marketing coordinator for the Left Bank Gallery in Orleans, and a grant writer at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Blood is like many working artists living on the Cape. But she is most passionate about writing, something that has long been a part of who she is. “I’ve got all this stuff spilling out of me and need to have a place for it to go,” she says of the craft. Two years ago, Blood was approached by Surface Popper Publications to see if she was interested in publishing a collection of her humorous essays about life’s trials and tribulations. Those essays found their way into her first book, “How Not to Do Things” which was released in June 2017.
52
“It was kind of unbelievable,” she says, an adjective she also used to describe her Fellowship. First the book and now the AFCC Fellowship, she says, have served as validation for her work. A mother of two who lives in Orleans with her husband Chris, a sound engineer, she is using this year’s fellowship towards her second book, a novel about spending a year alone as a hermit. “I’m hoping that this fellowship with the Arts Foundation gives me, if not the time and the space, the permission and sort of expectation to write this book,” she says. “Now I’m writing more than ever because I have this fellowship.”

JAMES EVERETT STANLEY (VISUAL ARTS)
As the son of an immigrant – his father is from Guyana in South America – Stanley has a personal connection to the next story he wants to tell. And he will use his AFCC fellowship to tell that story through his paintings. “I am trying to do this project painting portraits of Caribbean immigrant families living on the Outer Cape,” he explains. “I think these are really important stories to tell in this time period. And these images and faces are important to have out there and represented in art.” The AFCC award, he says, will go directly to fund materials to allow him to complete the project. “Painting is not an inexpensive habit,” he laughs. Despite the expenses, painting has had its rewards for Stanley, who lives in Wellfleet with his wife, poet Kirsten Andersen, and their two children Elle, 6, and Winn, 7. A visual arts instructor at Brown University, Stanley’s work has been exhibited throughout the country, including the Freight & Volume Gallery in New York City; Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago; Frederic Snitzer Gallery in Miami; and Mark Selwyn Fine Art in Los Angeles. This year, his art is being show at the Boston Center for the Arts, the Gaa Gallery in Provincetown, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. Success hasn’t happened overnight for Stanley. He has
Pops by the Sea 2018
studied, worked at, and honed his craft for more than two decades. A native of Waltham, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Columbia University. He was introduced to the Cape through a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown in 2002. Sixteen years later, Stanley continues to impress through his art as witnessed by his latest fellowship from the AFCC. “I think this grant program is fantastic because it’s for artists on the Cape,” he says. “You know they are funding people who have decided to make a life at making art here as opposed to what is more expected, that people go to a bigger city to make art.”
Chris, who grew up on the Cape. Today, she splits her time between parenting – the couple welcomed their first child, Stella, roughly eight months ago – serving as the manager of the Cape Conservatory’s Falmouth branch, teaching at the conservatory, and performing. With her award, George is in the process of producing a Christmas album that will include a mix of originals as well as traditional favorites. She plans on calling on her siblings to lend their talents when she records the album which she plans on releasing in time for the holidays. Like the other fellows, George was ecstatic at the news of being selected as one of this year’s winners. “It was such good timing,” she says. “I felt like it was that little tap on my shoulder from the universe that I am in the right field and this is worthwhile work… Now that I actually have this money in hand, I have to come through with this project. It’s a little scary and also really exciting to be held accountable for my dreams with this award.”

MARY GEORGE (PERFORMING ARTS)
A singer-songwriter who plays the piano, guitar, and “a little ukulele,” George credits her upbringing — her father is a talented amateur musician and her three siblings all have pursued careers in music – for her devotion to the arts. “Something I really love about making my own music is it helps me to process what I’m experiencing in a way that is really meaningful and really tangible,” she says. Originally from Long Island, George pursued her passion for music at Boston University where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance and a Master of Science in arts administration. While living in the city, George performed at a number of popular Boston-area venues, including The Burren, The Middle East, and the Lizard Lounge. She released her first EP, Bird Songs, in May 2015. A year later, she moved here full-time with her husband

Workshop Provides Roadmap for Writing Success
H
ow can you use plot to improve the structure of your novel? What is the best way to develop your characters? Should you self-publish or opt for the traditional route? Over the course of 10 weeks, from the beginning of March to the beginning of May, nearly two dozen Cape residents took part in a free introductory fiction writing workshop at Sturgis Library that was funded through a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Another will be held in the fall, starting in September. Taught by writer Corey Farrenkopf, a reference librarian at Sturgis, the series is a practical approach to the craft. It is less about the vagaries of finding your muse and more about the hands-on tools needed for those looking to take their writing to the next level. AFCC funds helped to pay for guest speakers such as author Paul Tremblay, who gave a reading of his own work to students in April. “The class exceeded my expectations in every way,” says Marstons Mills resident Sean Murphy. “Corey is extremely blue collar in his approach to writing… He wants you to roll up your sleeves. This is work. This is a job where you need to learn the skills. If you learn them, then you’ll be successful. The single biggest takeaway for me is that there is a process to it.” That process is one that Murphy will follow as he tackles his dream project — a children’s book about an otter’s quest to make
artsfoundation.org
her way home after leaving her family. Farrenkopf’s class gave Murphy a concrete roadmap for making his dream project a reality. As a consumer of literature, Dr. Michael Perlmutter, a retired radiologist who lives in Barnstable, was able to gain an appreciation for “what goes into the process of writing fiction,” he says. “I got an enormous amount out of the class, more than I ever expected. Each of Corey’s classes introduced an entire aspect of fiction writing such as dialogue, characters, setting, and plot, just to name a few.” Though only 27, Farrenkopf has had nearly a dozen short stories published and is currently working with his agent on his latest novel. Despite his success, he continues to write; he sets a goal of writing 1,000 words per day. By its nature, writing can be a lonesome trade. It’s why Farrenkopf sees the value in this type of workshop. “It is important to build community,” he says. “I want to live in a place where people are really into art and literature and writing and are supportive of each other… When there’s not an accessibility to writing and reading programs, a community kind of gets stagnant. I think doing things like this spread the kind of knowledge that fuels people’s creative desires.”

About the Boston Pops
I
n 2018 the Boston Pops enters its 133rd season of entertaining audiences in Boston and beyond. Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart marks his 24th year at the helm of the orchestra. In 1881 Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, calling its establishment “the dream of my life.” From the start, he intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his musicians. In May 1885—a little more than a month before the inaugural “Promenade Concert”—German-born conductor Adolf Neuendorff, under the aegis of the BSO, conducted a series of “Popular Concerts” in the Boston Music Hall, where the audience sat in typical concert seating and no refreshments were served. On July 11, 1885, Neuendorff—who became the first conductor of the Pops, before that name was officially adopted—led the first official “Promenade Concert,” distinguished from “Popular Concerts” by virtue of seating (tables and chairs instead of auditorium-style rows), program format (three parts divided by two intermissions, during which patrons could promenade around the concert hall), and the availability of food and beverages. For the rest of the 19th century, although formally called “Promenade Concerts,” they continued to be referred to informally as “Popular,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name officially adopted in 1900. The following year the orchestra performed
58
for the first time in its new home, Symphony Hall. There were 17 Pops conductors—beginning with the aforementioned Adolf Neuendorff—who preceded the legendary Arthur Fiedler (1930-1979). The first American-born musician to lead the orchestra, Fiedler established the Boston Pops as a national icon. When John Williams (1980-1993) succeeded Fiedler in 1980, he was the most highly-acclaimed composer in Hollywood, and today, with 51 Academy Award nominations, he is the most-nominated living person in Academy history. With the Pops, Mr. Williams made a series of best-selling recordings, broadened and updated the Pops repertoire, and entertained audiences with live orchestral accompaniment to film clips of memorable movie scenes, many of which featured iconic music from his own scores. Keith Lockhart (1995-present) has led concerts spotlighting artists from virtually every corner of the entertainment world, all while maintaining the Pops’s appeal to its core audience. He has made 79 television shows, led 43 national and four overseas tours, led the Pops at several high-profile sports events, and recorded fourteen albums. Mr. Lockhart’s tenure has been marked by a dramatic increase in touring, the orchestra’s first Grammy nominations, the first major network national broadcast of the July 4th concert on the Charles River Esplanade, and the release of the Boston Pops’s first self-produced and self-distributed recordings. In 2017, the July Fourth concert opened a new page in its history, as the Pops organization presented its first self-produced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.

Arts Offer Sense of Normalcy at Family Pantry
t’s a sunny, warm Saturday morning in the middle of July, perfect for a day at the beach where lines of cars have already formed, full of people eager to soak up the best the Cape has to offer. In Harwich, outside the Family Pantry of Cape Cod, another line has formed, though this one speaks to the imperfections of life in our region. Here people are eager for the free food the pantry provides. Inside the relatively nondescript building, three teenagers — Nora Swidey and her older sister, Sophia, and their neighbor Brynn Garrity, summer residents of Dennis Port — quietly chat with Amy* a seven-year-old who paints an assortment of flowers, each different colors, on an 8x10 canvas as her mother picks up groceries for her family. The Swideys and Garrity talk to Amy about everything from her favorite color — she mentions pink, purple, green and yellow — to the drawings she likes to make at home. There’s a sweet innocence to the scene that belies the reason she is here. With a simple arts and crafts table, six local youths — Susanna Swidey along with Fiona and Maeve Garrity are the others — have created a sense of normalcy for children of the pantry’s clients. It started last summer when the two sets of siblings approached the pantry about offering a creative outlet, two days a week for a total of six hours, to local children. That first year they self-funded the initiative by selling their own handmade jewelry at Harwich Port’s summer strolls and in front of Woolfie’s Bakery in Dennis Port. “Part of the reason we started this, is a lot of arts programs on the Cape, most of the kids have to pay for them,” says Brynn. “We wanted to create one for free where they can learn and explore.” This summer, the AFCC provided a grant to support this grassroots effort.
artsfoundation.org
Having served 9,300 clients and 3,796 households throughout Cape Cod last year, the pantry has more than enough traffic to warrant this type of creative outlet. “It has been a big plus for the pantry and the kids of clients who come here,” says Pat Brophy, the program manager for the nonprofit who has steadily seen demand for its services rise since he started working there in 2011. “We really consider ourselves a sustaining pantry for families in need of assistance.” On this day, the pantry is busy, meaning parents can spend as long as an hour collecting their free groceries while their children take part in a range of crafts Nora, Sophia, and Brynn have laid out on a table in a room separate from where food is distributed. These include painting; weaving; creating beach scenes in a jar using Model Magic clay; making dream catchers; and decorating rocks. Every two weeks, the art projects change, coinciding with how often the clients are allowed to return for food. After completing a piece, Nora says, children are often filled with pride “and go and show their mom what they made. It’s really amazing to see.” When asked to explain the impact of the arts and crafts program, Nora shares a story of a boy and girl, each roughly four years old, who were both making animals out of clay earlier this summer. Though the boy only spoke Portuguese and the girl English, Nora says, “they were laughing and having fun. Even though they didn’t speak the same language, they were able to communicate through art.” *Amy’s name has been changed for this article.
