Welcome Letter As you watch our Pops by the Sea At-Home Edition, remember that this is Cape Cod’s benefit concert for our local artists and our cultural nonprofits who are hurting. We recently conducted a survey in which cultural leaders told us they anticipated their organizations would lose as much as $3.7 million in revenue as a result of the pandemic, leading to furloughs, reduced salaries of staff, and use of financial reserves. Artists estimate they will lose nearly $1.1 million this year. These numbers paint a stark picture.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES.
But we remain hopeful. That’s because we have the arts. The arts are resilient, the arts are adaptable, and the arts endure. We’ve seen this locally with musicians safely playing outdoor shows in their yards and public spaces; with the return of the drive-in theater; and with photographers snapping pictures of families safely on their front doorsteps.
This August is a stark reminder of how much has changed. We’ll be celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea and Keith Lockhart’s 25th anniversary with the Boston Pops, at home, apart.
Still, uncertainty looms. To reduce that uncertainty, we play a pivotal role. For all the times that the arts have lifted us up, now it’s our turn. We must return the favor.
Last August, we were all together on a picture-perfect summer night, dancing and singing along to Keith Lockhart, guest conductor and performer Erich Bergen, and the Boston Pops. If you were to conjure up a quintessential image of summer on Cape Cod, this would be it.
We know you’ll enjoy it. But it won’t be the same. There is a communal energy you feel at a live show that gets lost in translation when you’re watching on your computer or television. Through the arts, we realize just how connected we all are. And through the arts, we find comfort at a time when we need it most. Among the first images we saw when the pandemic hit were opera stars in Italy standing out on their balconies, singing from the depths of their heart. At our lowest point as individuals, as a community, and as a society, it has been the arts that have lifted us up. When tragedy strikes, what is one of the first things that happens? A benefit concert is held to raise funds for those who are hurting.

We think the arts are worth saving. And if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you do too. That’s why we hope you’ll seriously consider a donation to the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Pops by the Sea is our largest fundraiser of the year, allowing us to make a tangible impact on our creative economy. hile we are unable to gather together in celebration this year on the Hyannis Village Green, Citizens Bank recognizes the crucial role that the arts and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod play in the social and economic well-being of our community. And so, we gather virtually to experience the arts through the uplifting music of Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Citizens Bank has been proud to support this event for a number of years and it holds a special place in our hearts. I personally have so many fond memories of the fantastic special guest conductors who have shared the stage—Erich Bergen, Blue Man Group and so many others. This year, we have a very deserving group of honorary chairs that will be recognized for their incredible and often heroic acts on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response. They are the healthcare professionals who put their lives on the line to serve and care for our community over the course of this pandemic. These are family members, friends and neighbors who answered the call and cared for so many loved ones against immense challenges, stress and uncertainty. REFLECTS BEAUTIFUL ENERGY OF MUSIC Cynthia Packard, 2020 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist WHERE DO ARTISTS DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? For painter Cynthia Packard, it’s found in the world of nature and creativity that is just steps from her Provincetown studio.
It is that magical setting that informs the latest piece she created for this year’s Pops by the Sea commemorative painting. “From living on Cape Cod and living in an artists’ community and seeing sunsets and thinking about music I love, this all came together in this painting,” she says just days before she unveiled the stunning piece live on Facebook as part of the Arts Foundation’s Home Is Where The Art Is virtual arts festival. Titled, “A Symphony,” it depicts a subject—an abstract sunset juxtaposed with a moon—that Packard admittedly is not known for. “To me, painting a sunset is the worst cotton candy in the world,” she says. It’s a bold statement that one would expect from Packard, whose career has been defined by making similarly daring ones with her work. A native of Princeton, New Jersey, Packard was born to make art; her great grandfather was the noted impressionist Max Bohm, who was instrumental in establishing Provincetown’s art colony. Her mother, Anne Packard, is renowned for her sea and landscape paintings.
25 years ago when she purchased her studio on Bradford Street, not far from the Pilgrim Monument. This is where Cynthia’s imagination and emotion intersects with her talent, resulting in artwork that showcases her oneof-a-kind style, which has been exhibited throughout the country. “My paintings can be very edgy and agitated and active or soothing and calming,” she says. Each one starts as a blank canvas, and Cynthia never knows what the end result will be; it’s the same approach she took for her virtual representation of this year’s Pops by the Sea. “The painting came out of me,” she says. “I had no idea where I was going with this painting. I just made some marks and then those marks told me what to do next. It was like an event that took place by me being present and listening and responding to my own voice.” This creative process is what excites Cynthia, offering her a pathway to learn more about herself and the world around her. “You can’t separate the person from the art,” she says. “You paint who you are. So what do my paintings say? Sometimes they say I am a scared little kitten and other times, they say, I’m bold, honest and unafraid.”
While Cynthia followed in their footsteps, she has forged her own path. After graduating from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1981 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture, she moved to Provincetown to pursue a career as an artist.
There’s a spirituality to Cynthia’s work that can be witnessed in “A Symphony,” which she finished during the height of the pandemic. While the piece is dark and abstract, Cynthia focuses on the sun setting, which she says is “a metaphor for the symphony playing by the sea—the explosion of color and light with this darkness behind it. The symphony is playing as it’s getting dark and there’s this beautiful energy of music.”
Success didn’t come immediately, but she persisted. “I waitressed and started painting, painting, painting,” she recalls, eventually saying farewell to her waitressing gig
The work is a testament to the power of art, a place where we can all find meaning, hope, light, and comfort, especially during life’s most difficult moments.

BRAGINTON-SMITH TWO DAYS BEFORE DIANNA BRAGINTONSMITH’S OLDER SISTER WOULD HAVE TURNED 59, Dianna received a phone call from Arts
Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) Executive Director Julie Wake that connected the siblings like never before. Wake asked Dianna if she would be interested in submitting a piece to the AFCC’s Virtual Live Art Auction on August 6th as a tribute to her late sister Heather, the 1989 Pops by the Sea commemorative artist. Heather’s painting is a whimsical scene; in the center is a boy, toes dipped in the water, playing the flute on the beach under an umbrella. In the foreground are six mermaids, depicting faces of her family members, perched behind the base of a cliff. In the background are two ships sailing on the sea. “The piece she created was done with so much love,” Dianna says. “Heather was so honored that they used her work to represent the event. I believe they had Julia Child conducting that year, and she got to meet her. I remember the height of her career was doing that painting.” Fast forward eight years later, and Heather’s life and art were cut short when she died in a motor vehicle crash on Route 6 in March 1997. Growing up, the two sisters were “one unit… she painted, I painted,” Dianna says, a talent the pair inherited from their mother, Dorothy. When asked what she misses most about Heather, Dianna doesn’t hesitate—“her spirit, her amazing spirit. She just had a fun-loving, compassionate, amazing spirit and a great energy to be around. It was a joy.”
That joy came rushing back to Dianna for several weeks in June and July when she jumped at Wake’s invitation and completed a half-finished seascape on wooden panel that her sister had started before her death. Dianna painted it in her Yarmouth Port studio on her sister’s old easel. The piece serves as an homage to Heather’s 1989 Pops painting. “It’s a different view of the same day, in my style,” Dianna says. The two sailboats in the original painting are back, under cloudy skies that open up over an orchestra performing on a half shell. The contrast between the two paintings—where Dianna’s work connects with Heather’s—is readily apparent. “She used an old classical varnish,” Dianna explains. “I didn’t varnish my side. If you look, you can see the shine of her section and the dullness of mine… Her painting is visible in my painting. It was very intentional.” Twenty-three years after her sister passed, the project allowed Dianna to “bring my sister back to paint with me again… Doing this painting on her easel, it honestly felt like she was with me. “Sometimes it was too much, and it would wreck me and I had to let it go, which was very shocking because quite honestly I lost her a long, long time ago,” she continues. “It was never the awful crying. It was the getting to embrace her again and the joy of what it would be like to be reunited with her all these years.” When Dianna parts with the work, she hopes the new owner will “feel the love and the gratitude I had for being given this opportunity to paint with my sister.” On the back of the painting will be a note from Dianna explaining its significance. “Whoever buys it should never forget the original seed painting that was unfinished, like my sister’s life,” she says.

Neal McDonough GUEST CONDUCTOR
I
n 2018, Dermot Mulroney set a new standard when he not only guest conducted the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea, but played the cello. Last year, Erich Bergen added a new twist to the concert when he served as both the guest conductor and the guest performer. Now Neal McDonough will pull his own form of double duty, guest conducting both this year’s Pops by the Sea at-home edition as well as next year’s in-person. When he eventually steps onstage at the Hyannis Village Green, it will serve as a highlight for the 1984 Barnstable High grad, who recalls recommending the iconic event to guests at his parents’ Rainbow Motel in Hyannis in the early years of the Pops. “This is such a cool thing for a Hyannis boy. When I was at the motel, I’d tell people, ‘This is the Pops weekend. You have to go down to see it. It’s fantastic,’” he says. “For me to finally get to go to it and be onstage and conduct with Keith Lockhart, are you kidding me? How cool is that? “I’m so looking forward to what we do this year for fun and I’m really looking forward to when I get to do the real thing,” he continues. “I’m going to be so good at conducting a year from now, you have no idea.” It’s a comment made in jest by the affable McDonough, who boasts over 125 acting credits, many of which have him playing the part of the bad guy. Off-screen, he is a devoted family man; he and his wife Ruvé currently live outside of Vancouver, Canada, where they are raising five children. “Acting is fun and it’s my job. I love the heck out of it, but it’s a deep third place behind God and my family,” he says.
Still, he has a deep appreciation for the arts and how they can enrich a person’s life. “The most successful people are the real artists in life,” he says. “Look at Keith Lockhart. Look at Muhammad Ali. Look at the greats, they also were the most artistic guys and so completely unique to breed such success.” McDonough’s passion for the arts dates back to his childhood. His first starring role was as Snoopy in his high school’s production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” On opening night, he received a standing ovation. To this day, he credits the school’s drama club director John Sullivan for “having faith in this kid who was not doing well in school and not on any sports teams,” McDonough says. “It all starts with him. He gave me my first break.” That first break has led to countless others, recently snowballing to a string of bigger and better TV and film roles that have included “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” where he played villain Damien Darhk; “Yellowstone” opposite Kevin Costner; and most recently “Red Stone,” a feature which he executive produced. None of this is lost on McDonough, who is grateful for having the opportunity to do what he loves. “For me, it’s been 30 years of people paying me to do something I would do for free,” he says. “I’ve been blessed with so much work the past five years. It’s been really nonstop. It is a blessing to be here. I can’t say how fortunate I am. God is certainly on my side, telling me where to go. It is pretty humbling to say the least.”

pend a day at Heritage Museums & Gardens, and you’ll be sure to cross paths with a dazzling array of birds, bees, butterflies, and insects, set against the beautiful backdrop of the meticulously landscaped 100-acre property.
This year, Heritage has welcomed nearly two dozen of these creatures made out of the building blocks of our youth, Legos. Part of a special exhibit partially funded through a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC), they are educating, inspiring, and entertaining visitors young and old. It is the latest outdoor display at the museum funded by the AFCC in recent years. “I think Heritage is really a great location for outdoor art,” says Assistant Curator Amanda Wastrom. “Outdoor art is a way to change how people experience a landscape.” With the Lego creations that is certainly the case. There’s a northern cardinal, a goldfinch, a dragonfly, a bumblebee, and a group of pollinators that include a ruby-throated hummingbird, a sweat bee, and a monarch butterfly. “I think all the time, for art at Heritage, it is about storytelling,” Wastrom says. “What kind of stories can you share? With this particular exhibit, it is about our local habitat and our local ecosystems. Art really is a great storytelling tool.” The job of telling that story fell on Cody Wells, a brick artist, who rediscovered his love of Legos at the lowest point of his life. “When I was 28, I was unhappily married, with two kids I loved, and working at a job I hated,” he says. “The same weekend I went through a divorce, I found out I was adopted and went back to my hometown in Missouri to end my life.”
While visiting his family home, he found some Legos he had once played with as a child. “It made me smile for the first time in months,” he says. Since then, he has rebuilt his life into something beautiful, not unlike the one-of-a-kind pieces he makes from scratch, brick by brick. “Anything you want to make is in a pile of Legos. You just have to find it,” he says. That’s what he loves most about his career. He also loves that it allows him to work with organizations like Heritage in building his original sculptures. “It’s the element of imagination. You can make anything you want," he says. The best part of the process, he says, “is the moment I’m done, especially when somebody hires me to do something like this. They often don’t know what they want because they don’t know what is possible.” The pieces at Heritage have elicited a sense of wonder and amazement from the public, especially families with young children. “I want parents to be inspired to help kids create with Legos,” Wells says. As for the adults, some may get the urge to follow Wells’s own path, something he witnesses regularly when he appears at conventions throughout the world. “I see it in their eyes—they want to build some Legos and lay on a shag carpet as ‘I Love Lucy’ plays on the TV. They want to go back to their childhood,” he says. “I don’t know if Peter Pan syndrome is treatable, but I like to encourage it.”

ver the past school year, Rachel Youngling made the monthly trek to preschool classrooms across Cape Cod, bringing with her a basket full of musical props and a desire to make a change in the lives of children in need.
using musical props such as shaker eggs and scarves. Then comes the highlight of the class—each student chooses an instrument, ranging from castanets to triangles to drums to the Caribbean guiro.
For 40 minutes, she gave students the opportunity to escape the difficulties of life through song, dance, and music. It’s all part of her Musical Discoveries program, which connects children to the arts during the early stages of development.
After reaching a crescendo, the students helped clean up the instruments, returning to the circle and sitting quietly as Youngling sang a lullaby, ending with the “Goodbye Song.”
Funded by a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC), it offered a host of benefits to the children, who ranged in age from 2.5 to 5 years old and whose families qualify for Head Start, a national program promoting school readiness for low-income households. “Some children are homeless,” Youngling says. “Other children just have a single mom trying as hard as she can to keep all the pieces together at home.” Through the AFCC grant, Youngling reached 179 children in nine classrooms across the Cape this past school year. The classes started with a vocal warm-up, singing the “Hello Song” before leading into small movement exercises

Though short, Youngling’s time with students boosted their engagement, enhanced their creativity, and supported their literacy development. Youngling’s role in all of this is to help children access a music program that exposes them to a variety of tonalities, meters, and styles in “a developmentally appropriate way,” she explains. “The ultimate goal is to bring children to music competence, which we define as singing in tune and keeping a beat. A child in a musically rich learning environment typically reaches this milestone between 5 and 8 years of age.” Regardless of background, Youngling says, all children can achieve this if given the opportunity. That is what this program does for the most vulnerable students on the Cape—it gives them the opportunity to shine.

But COVID had other plans. When it is safe to do so, the shared workspace, which caters to artists in Provincetown, will tap into funds provided by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) to launch the series, which covers a range of practical topics that include finances; grant opportunities; photo editing; public relations; portfolio development; and working with curators and galleries. These are all workshops that Provincetown Commons Executive Director Jill Stauffer says offer meaningful guidance for local creatives. “I think it’s important to share best practices and what’s going on within the art space

In recent months, Provincetown’s arts community has worked in unison to help one another through these times. “Many of the art galleries never collaborated or had an association with one another and COVID has brought them all together,” Stauffer says. “Obviously, we’re doing it to support our artists, and the Commons has been instrumental in that and so have Julie Wake and the Arts Foundation.” With all of these recent challenges, Stauffer says, “the arts matter just as much now. Our physical health is important. Arts and culture help sustain us mentally and spiritually. It has such an important place in our overall picture of health.”

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY WAS NOT ONLY A BOX OFFICE SUCCESS , grossing over $903 million worldwide, but a critical one as well, earning Rami Malek a slew of honors including an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
Behind the scenes, Malek’s voice was blended with Mercury’s as well as Pops by the Sea guest artist Marc Martel. It was the pinnacle of what has been a second act for Martel who rose to fame in 2011 after his YouTube rendition of “Somebody to Love” gained worldwide attention for his uncanny resemblance, visually and vocally, to Mercury. That one video, which has amassed over 21.5 million views and led to an appearance on “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” was enough for Martel to say goodbye to his previous
Canadian rock band, Downhere, and hello to a life that would see him entertain audiences, first as the lead singer of Queen’s official tribute show, The Queen Extravaganza, and currently with The Ultimate Queen Celebration. Legendary Queen drummer Roger Taylor once told the Daily Record that Martel’s voice is indistinguishable from Mercury’s. “You listen, close your eyes and you think it is Freddie. It’s really uncanny.” Having performed on “American Idol” and for the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Clippers and at opening night of the Kentucky Derby, Martel will give Pops by the Sea audiences a glimpse of what they can expect next year when he finishes this year’s virtual concert with a special performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” We’re already counting down the days to August 15, 2021!

In fact, when the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod spoke with him for this interview, he pulled it out and started playing over the phone. “I carry it everywhere I go in case I can show off in front of [my wife] Ruvé,” he says. Though he plays a little guitar and dabbles in the piano, it’s the harmonica that has him hooked. He received his first one on a trip to Ireland with his mother. “She got me this harmonica, and as soon as I played it, I really liked it,” he recalls. “I backpacked around Europe by myself with the harmonica, and I played all over the place.” He has continued to play the instrument; at home, he is often accompanied by his lab, Boomer. “If I start playing the blues, he’ll start howling if he hears me,” McDonough laughs. “He comes over and sings with me every single time.” While we’re not sure if Boomer will show up on stage at next year’s Pops, there’s a good bet the harmonica will. “That goes without saying,” he says. “I’ll blow the doors off of everyone. I have a blast when I play.”

GEORGE SCHARR FIRST MET MATEO DARACK IN THE SUMMER OF 2017 DURING BAND CAMP AT FALMOUTH ACADEMY.
That day, Mateo sat in the corner, playing two notes on the tuba. “The instructor looks at me and raises his eyebrows. In the first two notes—imagine when someone speaks to you—you can tell a tremendous amount about a player, not only by their tone, but their articulation and how they go from the first note to the second,” says Scharr, who serves as the school’s music director. Afterwards, Scharr sat down with Mateo, asking him what he hoped to do with his talent. “I’d like to be a tuba player for the Boston Pops,” Scharr recalls him saying. A year later, that dream was partially realized when Mateo was one of several Falmouth Academy students to kick off the 33rd Annual Pops by the Sea by playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” as they made their way down the Hyannis Village Green to the front of the iconic stage. For someone who has long dreamed of one day being on that stage, it was a highlight of his young career. “Having the Boston Pops watching us and clapping, it gave me a tingling feeling,” says Mateo.

Mateo, who has been playing music since the fourth grade, lives on Martha’s Vineyard and has dedicated himself to his craft, intent on combining his passion with his talents to reach his goal. “This guy has the right stuff,” says Scharr, who has played the bass trombone with the Cape Symphony for over 30 years. “He is a rare breed. So many kids have a few ingredients, but not all of them. It is inspiring to me because I wasn’t like that at his age.” This year, Mateo has continued his ascension. He currently plays with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, was accepted into the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony, and performed at Symphony Hall in Boston at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Festival. Mateo, who is going to be a sophomore this fall, is driven by “making music for other people just for the enjoyment. That keeps me going and practicing every day.” Music, he says, “can completely influence how you feel, can bring back memories, can give you aspirations, and can influence everybody in their daily lives. … Getting people to feel those things and remember those things is an honor I consider myself lucky to have.” And so in the midst of the pandemic, he continues to study. He continues to play. And he continues to practice, getting closer to his goal with every note he plays.

Mid-Cape’s location in Orleans has a 10’x72’ wall facing the Cape Cod Rail Trail and Orleans Main Street. It also allowed Cape creatives to connect with others who share a passion for arts, culture, innovation, imagination, and self-expression. And that is ultimately the goal of the Creative Exchange—to bring together our creative community to inspire all of us to greater heights.

MASSHIRE ArtWorks PROGRAM Brodt’s experience is a shining example of the program when it works best.
“It is about as good as it gets,” Cumes acknowledges. “I feel like it couldn’t have been a better mentorship. … Caroline was an amazingly hard-working, sweet, sweet human being. It was so wonderful to see her work develop. Everything I shared with her or taught her, she integrated into her work.
WHEN PHOTOGRAPHER JULIA CUMES WAS FIRST APPROACHED about serving as a
mentor for Barnstable High School junior Caroline Brodt in the fall of 2016, she was initially hesitant. Cumes, who travels extensively for work, had trips planned to Cuba and Kenya, and aside from having a full schedule, she was skeptical about offering mentorship. “In the past, I’ve had experiences where the young students didn’t invest the kind of energy I did,” she explains. Still, she offered to look at Brodt’s portfolio, which featured photos of her sister Olivia’s experience with cancer. “I was immediately struck by the raw power and intimacy of her images,” Cumes says. “It was clear to me that Caroline had a wonderful sense of composition and light, and her work showed an exceptional willingness to engage with her subject in a way that seemed beyond her 16 years.” And so Cumes agreed to mentor Brodt through the MassHire Cape and Islands Workforce Board’s ArtWorks program, which will be entering its 24th year and has been partially funded in recent years through a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Through the program, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high schools across the Cape are connected to mentors in arts-related fields as part of a 40-hour internship that takes place over the course of a six-month period.
“It was incredibly satisfying to watch her develop so wonderfully as a photographer and see her shine,” Cumes continues. During Brodt’s internship, she continued to chronicle her sister’s journey, which ended in April 2017 when Olivia died at the age of 20. The project was exhibited at Barnstable High School during Caroline’s senior year. “It was one of the most powerful and beautifully executed photo essays I’ve seen a student put together,” says Cumes. Cumes's relationship with Brodt has blossomed beyond high school. Brodt, who will be entering her junior year at Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is studying advertising photography, traveled to Kenya with Cumes in 2018 to photograph the great migration. Last year, Brodt served as an assistant to Cumes on a photography workshop she led in Cuba. This summer, Brodt is continuing to sharpen her skills as an intern at the Cape Cod Times. “I think the mentorship had a huge snowball effect on me,” she says. “I’m very grateful I put myself out there at a young age and took that risk and gained something beautiful from it.”
“Artist mentors really open amazing doors for these young students in this program,” says the workforce board’s Executive Director Kara Galvin. “Oftentimes mentors are not only teaching students about art, but helping them secure scholarships, writing them recommendations for college, and forming relationships that last beyond the internship.”

The next day—Friday the 13th—the orchestra shut down due to the pandemic. “Most of that weekend was a wake-up call that we’re all going to be dealing with something we never dealt with before and that this was not a short-term problem,” he recalls. “It sticks to my mind my last public performance. I hope it’s not too long before the next one.” That next one is tentatively scheduled for December. “For someone who has not spent a couple of weeks off a podium, that is nine months apart,” he says. “When I finally am able to get up on stage to make music, I’ll be so grateful and so energized to do what I love.” Shortly after he was named the 20th conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1995, the then 35-year-old remarked about the permanence of the position he had taken, one that would define him and his career. “It is one of the best jobs I could possibly have in the whole industry,” he says today. “It’s an incredible place to be with a very loyal and widespread audience and a wonderful orchestra. Why wouldn’t you want to stay?”
America. If you’d describe what you’d love to be doing on a warm summer afternoon—it’s listening to the Boston Pops playing on a town green in New England. “We always enjoy doing this concert,” he continues. “Plus, it’s great to be doing it for the benefit of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. It’s artists supporting other artists. We’re going to miss this. Sadly, it’s one of the things on a long list of things we’re going to miss this season.” As to what he misses most, it’s the connection that a conductor makes with the orchestra and the audience. “This whole job is to connect with people,” he says. “You can make all the virtual videos you want, but the job is to bring people together for a shared emotive experience.” While there has been some good that has come out of the pandemic—Lockhart has been able to spend more time with his wife Emiley and their eight- and 10-year-old sons Christopher and Edward—it has “stopped me from doing what I love and what I do for a living dead in the tracks.” It’s a dream job that he cannot wait to get back to. “I’ve told a couple of people that I will never again take what I do for granted,” he says. “I’m ready to get back to doing live concerts as soon as somebody will let me.”
Twenty-five years later, this is not how he ever imagined he’d be celebrating this anniversary. It’s the first year he didn’t perform a 4th of July concert with the Pops on the Esplanade. It’s also the first summer he won’t conduct the Pops by the Sea after taking over the responsibility for Boston Pops Associate Conductor Laureate Harry Ellis Dickson who was responsible for founding the seminal concert in 1986. “This was a part of the world that Harry loved very much,” Lockhart says of the Cape. “I first split the concert with him the first two or three years and now I’ve been conducting it close to the last 20 years. … It’s the perfect slice of

hen the pandemic hit, the figurative curtain fell on the arts and culture scene on Cape Cod. Artists lost gigs. Museums, galleries, and art venues temporarily closed their doors. And staff at creative nonprofits were laid off or furloughed. Julie Wake and her two-person staff at the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) knew they had to act immediately, so they devised Home Is Where The Art Is, a three-day virtual arts and music festival that featured national acts like G. Love; regional talent like Adam Ezra; and local artists like Tianna Esperanza, Bert Jackson, and Zoe Lewis. Over 20 artists, representing musicians, painters, singers, songwriters, authors, and filmmakers, participated in the event, helping raise more than $30,000 for the Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund, which is helping to fuel the recovery of our creative economy. “We were able to curate a great assortment of talent representing different creative media, but sharing one thing in common—they all wanted to use their art to give back to our community,” Wake says. “That’s the true power of the arts. They offer avenues for us to come together, lift each other up, and heal in moments like we’re in right now.” The festival helped to kick-start something bigger—a $100,000 fundraising goal—and the AFCC is already more than halfway there. stopping until she reached Cape Cod.
“I rented a cottage at Kalmar Village in 2005 and I fell apart with my dog,” she says. After a successful stint in LA—at the age of 21, she was cast as the Pink Ranger, Kimberly Hart, in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” followed by a starring role in “Felicity”— Johnson realized she wasn’t satisfied creatively. “I felt like I had a great run as an actress. I did ‘Felicity’ and a bunch of TV shows and movies, but there was a point where I needed to escape,” she recalls. She spent that summer in the place where she grew up. The Cape was home, where she first discovered her love of the arts as a kid acting in plays at the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans.
With her talent, it didn’t take long for Hollywood to come calling again. She eventually returned to acting, first in a movie in Montreal, where she fell in love with Canada, and then on the CBS police procedural “Flashpoint” that was shot in Toronto, which she calls home today. When that series ended, Johnson again said farewell (mostly) to acting, only this time her journey wasn’t cross country. It was from in front of the camera to behind it. She wrote and directed her first feature, “The Space Between,” which premiered in 2017 and was screened at the Cape Cinema in Dennis. This year, her second film, “Tammy’s Always Dying” starring Felicity Huffman, made its debut in the midst of the pandemic, one day before she performed during the opening night of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s (AFCC) Home Is Where The Art Is festival. Johnson jumped at the chance to participate in the virtual festival, which supported the AFCC’s Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund. “I’m good and counting my blessings,” she explains. “I’m also trying to figure out, in small ways and gestures, how I can help. That’s why I said, ‘Yes’ to this. Why not do these gestures of giving in creative ways right now?” What the pandemic showed her—and all of us—is the power of the arts in getting us through life’s most difficult moments. “The arts are incredibly important,” she says. “One of the real blessings, the real part of the light that is still here, is all the creativity and the art that is happening now.”

Will DAILEY
W
hen Will Dailey was first approached by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) about playing a virtual concert to support the AFCC’s Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund, he had one piece of advice. Go big. Dailey’s advice is one that he followed almost immediately when the pandemic hit, playing a series of online performances to raise funds for Boston-based music venues and their staff who had lost work. Many nights he’d perform in his shower—for the acoustics— as part of what he dubbed the Isolation Tour. He averaged roughly $1,200 per show, evidence of the power the arts have in helping to heal communities. Based on his recommendation, AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake turned a one-off concert into a three-day virtual arts festival that featured some of the region’s biggest names. Of course, Dailey was part of the all-star lineup. Though he’s from Boston, Dailey has strong ties to the Cape, having performed at a number of venues, including the Beachcomber, over the years. “The Cape is such a beautiful part of the country,” he says. “It’s always summer for me whenever I’m there.” His affinity for the Cape was reason enough to take part in Home Is Where The Art Is. His life as a musician was the other. He understands the difficulties local artists are facing because he is one. “Because of the pandemic, all of my plans have been thrown out the window,” he says. “Financially, I built 2020 around touring and other creative projects. It was going to be a really good year; 2019 was when I did all the work for this year, and now all of it is gone.” Still, he knows stability is something an artist never signs up for. “Your job is being able to react in the moment. Even

if you’re on stage, you’ve got to react artistically,” he says. “Part of the excitement for me of being an artist is reacting to that moment, even if you’re onstage and you break a guitar string.” Of all professions, he says, it is the artist “who is best equipped to react to a pandemic. In a weird way, this isn’t anything new.” So when the pandemic hit, instead of curling up in his room, “playing the guitar alone and crying,” he decided that he’d use his art, energy, and talents to “do that [play the guitar] in front of everybody” online, he says. Dailey’s experience with Home Is Where The Art Is and his Isolation Tour have reinforced why he is an artist. “My whole philosophy during this time, which should be my philosophy throughout all time, is that anything we’re doing should be about lifting others up,” he says.

One of his students, who has taken dance classes for the past five years, told him she felt fortunate to be able to still learn, practice, and dance. “For her dance is the only thing in her life that is good,” Spencer says. “She is able to log onto our classes at her grandmother’s house and feel an escape through dance. It means the world to be able to touch people.” That is the approach Adam and his colleagues took when asked to participate in the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s

With nearly 50 years’ worth of experience as a musician, Jackson understands the power of the arts. “I think playing music connects me to my true self,” he says. “There is something that happens spiritually when you’re playing music, moments when you sort of step outside of yourself and everything is happening and it is kind of an out-of-body experience.” He’s not the only one who has experienced the magic of creating art. Jackson feels a kinship with his fellow creatives, which is why he jumped at the chance to use his talents to support the relief fund. “I think it’s really important to have that fund to help artists out there,” he says.

ometimes, it’s through suffering that we experience the greatest joy. That is how Eileen Powers channeled her cancer diagnosis into a creative project that gave her purpose, fulfillment, and a meaningful connection with others.
in nearly 85 series of photographs of Powers wearing an assortment of “hair” that has been donated by people from all over the country. “I’m hoping to get to 100,” she says. “That is my goal.”
It was delivered in the form of makeshift hair—banjo strings, kale, ramen noodles, corn husks, bike tubes, and more—sent from friends, family, neighbors, and complete strangers. She donned these faux wigs, allowing her to become someone else, anyone really—a country singer, a boxer, the stereotypical mom doing dishes, a handyman—enabling her to reclaim an identity that lymphoma had stripped away.
She has worn cabbage, meringue, and even frosting as others have taken portraits of Powers in her Yarmouth Port home. Sometimes, the photographer is the person donating the material. Other times it has been her partner, Tom Yonce.
Over the course of a year and a half, Powers endured 11 rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant that wreaked havoc on her body. That was the difficult part. The good? “When you have cancer, so many friends and family want to help you,” she says. “I feel really grateful that so many people stepped up and made food for me or asked if they could drive me to the hospital or take me to appointments.” A freelance graphic designer and a portrait photographer, Powers decided to combine her creative talents with the eagerness of her friends and family to launch an artistic project in the spring of 2019 that she dubbed, “Can You Make Hair for Me?” That has led to a creative journey of discovery, healing, and love, resulting Plastic bottle, straw, newspaper and cardboard hair by Colleen Murphy

Most, Powers says, “are not artists and not photographers.” That is one of the beauties of art. It gets people “out of their comfort zone, and they try something new and make use of a different part of their brain they don’t use every day,” Powers says. “That is expanding yourself.” It also offers light, levity, and hope in the midst of suffering. Her portraits have been shared with others across the world who are facing similar situations that Powers was. Yes, was. In January of this year, doctors told Powers she was cancer free. In July, she had her six-month check-up which revealed that all was fine. While relieved, she says, “there are still so many people going through cancer and chemotherapy, and I really feel akin to them and I’d like to help them if I can.” She will continue to do so through her project, which received a mini-grant from the AFCC’s Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund. “It was helpful in keeping me moving forward and keeping this project going,” she says. The compulsion to keep going is also internal. CAPE COD ARTS RELIEF FUND
Gin STONE
T
he creative process is never a straight line. It takes twists and turns that sometimes result in reinventing ourselves to become the artist we want to be.
That is the journey that Harwich’s Gin Stone took, switching from painter to a one-of-a-kind mixed-media artist whose work utilizes fiber—longline fishing gear, fabric, dyes, and cyanotypes—to create stunning three-dimensional pieces that include faux taxidermy and myth-based chimeras. She made that leap walking on the beach in Chatham one day while “having painter's block,” she recalls. “I was beachcombing for debris, and I thought the pieces I found would inspire me for colors in my paintings. I was inspired by the actual fibers themselves.” She started experimenting with the fibers on twodimensional surfaces but found the palette limiting. That is when she stumbled upon longline fishing gear “which took to fabric really well,” she says. “I then started putting it on three-dimensional things. … What I do is humane taxidermy. I get longline, hand dye it, and affix it to taxidermy forms the same way a taxidermist would with skin.” Though Stone has only been creating in this medium for roughly a decade, she says, “I’m surprised at how much attention it’s garnered. It’s different. People are attracted to something they haven’t seen before.”
For Stone, it was an important reminder that her work matters. “To have an arts organization recognize you for what you do and to be recognized as an artist, having them see you, I think is the most important part,” she says.
Where she was once unsatisfied with her work as a painter, today she says, “I’m really happy when I finish a piece. … I never got the level of satisfaction with painting that I do with this. Now, when I get bored with a subject, I make my own narrative for it. I make creatures with their own mythology using archaeology, antiquated cultural references, tribal references, and Greek goddesses.”
As a full-time artist, Stone admits, the past few months have been difficult. “It is harder because you don’t know what will happen to your career,” she says. “You’ve been building it and working to get to a certain place and everything shuts down and changes. You don’t know what will be on the other side of it.”
Her unique work was recently recognized by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod through a mini-grant from the Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund, which supports local artists impacted by the pandemic.
While she is uncertain for what the future holds, she remains hopeful. “I guess the only thing you can do is keep working and hope it comes back or comes back in a better way,” she says.

2016 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Born in Brazil in 1976, Cleber Stecei began experimenting with abstract painting as a teenager. After arriving in the United States at the age of 19, he became inspired by the beautiful New England scenery and has since excelled in landscape painting. Cleber has a great appreciation for realistic portrayals of the human form, as well as the spontaneous brush work of a plein air painting, and he carefully tries to combine those qualities in his work. Stecei’s work is done both from photographic references and on location (en plein air), allowing him to respond to the effects of natural light and atmosphere. Stecei is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association, and his work has been awarded numerous times, including a Best in Show. POPS by the SEA pays homage to Heather's popular Pops painting. A different view of the same day, but in Dianna's style. The sailboats in Dianna's piece are the ones you see in the background of the 1989 Pops painting. “I've added two sailboats sailing through the shadows and light, enjoying the music on the ocean breeze—a symbol of she and I sailing away in our perfect green-blue oil paint sea." Dianna has painted her entire life and attended the Boston Museum School.
This painting began as a piece by Heather Braginton-Smith, the 1989 Pops by the Sea commemorative artist. Heather died tragically in an automobile accident on Route 6 in March of 1997 at the age of 37. 2009 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Donald Beal was born in 1959 in Syracuse, New York, and grew up in Westford. He studied painting at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and received an MFA from Parsons School of Design in 1983. He moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1985 where he has lived and worked ever since. Beal has taught drawing and painting Cape-wide for nearly thirty years, and was a Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts in North Dartmouth from 1999 through 2019. 2017 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Canadian-born, Cape Cod–based artist Jackie Reeves uses mixed media to bring together figurative and abstract elements in her art. She was raised in Montreal by architect parents and studied design art at Concordia University. Her artistic career began as a professional mural painter for corporate, private, and public spaces. Concurrently, Reeves cofounded the Plymouth Community Art Center. In 2010 she earned her MFA in painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and has since exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Cape Cod and in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington DC, and North Carolina. She has been profiled in numerous publications including the Boston Globe, Art New England, and Artscope Magazine. She is the 2016 recipient of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Fellowship award for Visual Arts and was selected by the organization to paint the 32nd annual Boston Pops by the Sea commemorative painting in 2017. (Oil on wood, 32" x 42") Cynthia Packard uses her art as an expression of who she is. Packard grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, and comes from a long lineage of artists. Her great-grandfather was the noted impressionist Max Bohm, who played a significant role in establishing Provincetown's art colony. Her mother, Anne Packard, is renowned for her sea and landscape paintings. Cynthia graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1981 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and moved to Provincetown to pursue a career as an artist. Now, she shares her knowledge of her craft with emerging artists, teaching at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, and the Scottsdale Artists' School in Arizona, as well as leading in-studio workshops. 2019 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist I begin each sculpture by welding a thin skeleton of carbon steel. I overlay this with a hand-stitched fiber substrate. Many layers of sprayed or hand applied paper pulp, often interspersed with organic materials, imbue each piece with a life of its own. The fascinating chemistry of paper forges the elements together without the use of foreign chemicals or glue. When I want to use color on one of my pieces, I apply pure powdered pigments with a dry brush, or use watercolor or encaustic.
NOTE: the darker, "Autumn" horse also can be placed horizontally, as if running.
I am a native New Englander, born in Boston and raised in Guilford, Connecticut. I spent two decades in the Midwest, working as an artist, teaching, and raising a family. I studied papermaking under Timothy Barrett (2009 MacArthur Fellow) at the University of Iowa, where I earned an MFA in Sculpture (’97). I taught drawing, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and graphic design at Iowa Central Community College. My sculpture experience ranges from cast iron, bronze, and clay to welded steel, fiber, and paper. My unique method of sculpting with sprayed paper pulp is described in Volume 13, No. 2 of Hand Papermaking and in The Papermaker’s Companion by Helen Heibert. My work has been exhibited nationally. 2003 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Sam Vokey is an oil painter who specializes in landscapes and still lifes and commissioned custom paintings. Sam has been painting for more than 25 years. He is an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists and has won the designation of Copley Master from the Copley Society of Boston. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine and Middlesex School in Concord. His painting style is most closely associated with the Boston School tradition of painting, which crosses Realism with some of the softer edges and painterly qualities of Impressionism. Vokey’s landscapes and still lifes demonstrate a strong consideration for creating balance between the overall composition and the light and dark values in his paintings. In 2006, one of Vokey's still life paintings was acquired by the Cape Cod Museum of Art for the permanent collection. Vokey's paintings can also be found in private collections nationally and internationally, including the private collections of a United States Senator, the former President of Ireland, and the former President of Uruguay. He received a BA in philosophy from Princeton University and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He also studied at the Corcoran Museum School in Washington, DC, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. His portraits, landscape paintings, and sculptures have been shown in exhibitions throughout the United States. His portrait work is represented in numerous public and institutional collections here and abroad, including the National Portrait Gallery, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Federal Reserve Board, the Carnegie Institute of Washington, the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal Society in Great Britain, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others. In 2008 the National Portrait Gallery commissioned Friedman to paint a double portrait of Bill and Melinda Gates. In 2014 the museum added his portrait of Ted Turner to its collection and in 2017 it commissioned him to paint a portrait of Indra Nooyi. Born and raised in New England, Whitney has spent her life exploring and painting its diverse landscape, most especially its coastline. She received her BS in Fine Arts from Skidmore College. “Living near New England’s wonderfully diverse coast, I strive to create paintings that reflect those stunning colors that pop up quickly, as well as the emotions that they inspire. In my studio, I am able to paint large and expressively with oils while experimenting with the emotional impact of light, color, and application of paint.”
I begin each sculpture by welding a thin skeleton of carbon steel. I overlay this with a hand-stitched fiber substrate. Many layers of sprayed or hand-applied paper pulp, often interspersed with organic materials, imbue each piece with a life of its own. The fascinating chemistry of paper forges the elements together without the use of foreign chemicals or glue. When I want to use color on one of my pieces, I apply pure powdered pigments with a dry brush, or use watercolor or encaustic. My studio is in Sandwich. I gain a gratifying sense of power by manipulating metal through welding, plasma cutting, and hammering. I’m fascinated by marine life—particularly sharks, deep-sea anglerfish, and squid. Traci Harmon-Hay received her BFA in illustration and painting from the Maryland Institute of Art and studied with Fritz Briggs of the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore. She is a member and teacher at PAAM. She paints with fluid acrylics on raw canvas, building layers of wash into a final combination of opaque and transparent color. In this series, she reflects on her ongoing life as a hobbyist beekeeper by commenting on humans’ relationship to beauty. Her representation of the struggles of man versus nature, with the perfect symmetry of the background patterns as the setting for the industrious and vulnerable bee, underscores her hope that both beauty and survival will prevail. Pamela Pindell’s initial education was at Syracuse University and the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy. The latter gave her work a classical renaissance background, which she fused with subsequent Boston School training with Robert Cormier and Sydney Willis. A Massachusetts artist, she has been exhibited widely in open juried shows, including annuals at the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Catherine Lorrillard Wolfe Art Club, and the Audubon Society. Among many accolades, Pindell has won four within the last five years from the Guild of Boston Artists, including the prestigious Edmund Tarbell award. There is a contrast between the systematized squares and the looseness of the painting, between abstraction and realism. Most of them involve an underlying grid in which I use source photos and transfer them to the painting. Sometimes each square is painted separately; sometimes the entire painting is done in one shot. The images are chosen intuitively, mostly for their visual qualities, not for symbolic or narrative value. The subtle contradictions that exist within a painting are what interest me most and sustain me in my practice. Although rooted in an abstract tradition, my work makes clear references to the natural world. I spend as much time as I am able near the water: listening, watching the light, collecting. It is my intention that the images depicted, while not recognizable per se, be believable and exist logically within the environment of the painting. I emphasize the pure physicality of my materials while also exploring their alchemistic possibilities.
Pete Hocking is a visual artist & writer. In addition to being represented by Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, he’s recently shown at the Chazan Gallery in Providence, RI; the Dorado Project in Jersey City, NJ; the Plough Gallery in Tifton, GA; and at VeeVee in Boston, MA. In 2019 he was artistin-residence with Twenty Summers. He’s faculty in Goddard College’s MFA program in Interdisciplinary Arts and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design. WHY IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO SUPPORT THE ARTS
I
n recent months, we’ve all been entertained by bands playing virtual concerts, opera stars singing from their balconies, and pre-recorded solo performances of classical musicians spliced into one cohesive song, but for conductor Keith Lockhart, it doesn’t replace the real thing. “The virtual thing has been fun,” he says, before adding, “At the end of the day, it makes me sad. An orchestra playing a song individually at home is the same as me doing an annual Christmas card and photoshopping individual people into the picture. There’s no communication between people making art. In a way it is kind of poignant—what we’re missing is the gathering of community.”
“It is important for everybody to realize, if we want to enjoy these things and come back for the Pops by the Sea next year, we need to be as generous as we can to support the arts and artists and organizations like the Arts Foundation, which are great clearinghouses for our cultural community,” he says. “People need to support and help them through this.”
Lockhart is confident that live concerts will eventually return. As to what it looks like initially, he hazards a few guesses. Outdoor concerts will occur in settings where people can remain socially distant. Indoors, there will be capacity restrictions and seating will be designed to keep the audience farther apart from one another. For someone who is celebrating his 25th anniversary at the Boston Pops, Lockhart is looking forward rather than backward. His goals for the future aren’t lofty, but they resonate deeply with all that has gone on since March. “We have to get to the point where we can perform for people,” he says. “I think the world really needs it right now.” And the artists need us. “The members of the Boston Pops Orchestra who play the Hyannis concert every summer, those by and large are freelance musicians,” he says. “A lot of those people, let alone many artists on Cape Cod, have no income.” It is why, he says, it is critical for people to support organizations like the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
