THE 52-boat fleet in the British Classic Yacht Club Panerai Cowes Regatta was bathed in glorious sunshine providing the flock of photographers with the chance to capture the beauty of the unique gathering of classic racing yachts.

As the sun set over the Solent, the regatta which is a new addition to the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge series this year was being

He immediately donated them to the Special Boat Service, a charity that supports members and families of the Royal Navy.

The 1985 12 Metre, Italia, received the Sea Dragon Island Trophy for taking overall line honours in the long distance race. The Lallow Cup for best-presented new entrant went to the 1898 Gaff Cutter, Kismet.

A rum memory PLENTY of sun and plenty of breeze.

So far so good. It has been a summer for sailors so far. And when I say sailors I include everyone who gets out on the water, self propelled, winddriven or on or in powered craft.

But the glorious July just gone was a month of memories – or perhaps forgotten memories – for many sailors.

Friday July 31st was Black Tot Day – marking 40 years since the last daily issue of rum to the Royal Navy in 1970.

Pusser’s Rum still sells today so it was fitting that a special Up Spirits ceremony was re-enacted in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, accompanied by the singing of sea shanties.

The rum was produced to the Admiralty’s specification and was known as ‘Pusser’s Rum’ – a sailor’s corruption of purser, the ship’s officer over-seeing the rum distribution.

Steve White’s record bid PROFESSIONAL sailor Steve White announced his intention to break the current world record for circumnavigating the globe singlehanded, non-stop the “wrong way”, against the prevailing winds and currents.

Steve will be sailing a Volvo Open 70. Taking place this winter, the attempt will mark the 40th anniversary of the original record set

by Sir Chay Blyth.

The current record for completing the 22,000 mile course is 122 days, 14 hours and 4 minutes, and is held

by Frenchman Jean Luc Van Den Heede.

Sir Chay Blyth said: “Hundreds have completed the voyage following the classic Eastabout route but doing this in reverse is a quantum leap removed, which is why only five people including Mike Golding and

safety police at bay.

Mine’s a drop of gin, with a slice of lime of course, to prevent scurvy on a day sail to Cowes.

Safety first BUT on the subject of health and safety, there are of course many valuable rules.

Boat owners are again being advised to avoid using portable gas appliances with integral gas canisters following an explosion on the Norfolk Broads that sent two people to hospital with burns to legs, hands and faces.

The explosion happened when the gas canister of a camping stove was being changed in the open cockpit of a small sailing boat where candles and cigarettes were in use.

Inland waterway regulations do not ban portable gas equipment on boats but when not in operation, any appliance with a canister fitted and all spare gas canisters, empty or full, must be stowed in lockers that are self-draining, or on open deck Dee Caffari have tried it.”

And perhaps the best advice is simply to only use portable appliances on shore.

A big month August is a big month on many parts of the coast. The North East will get a special treat with the arrival of the Tall Ships at Hartlepool to add to the revival of boating. There are events big and small out west, and in Wales and in Scotland.

People sometimes think the Solent is over crowded. Perhaps it can be but on the other hand it is a huge treat to have wall to wall events showing off all that is best in boating from the extravaganza of Cowes Week to the now classic Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat race, with a host of other events that are as much a joy to watch as they are a thrill to take part in.

They offer us plenty of fun until the boat show at Southampton in September. Enjoy!

Star’s support

SOLO offshore racing sailor Alex Thomson is encouraging people to get involved in a sailing challenge for children’s health charity Action Medical Research.

The charity, which is dedicated to helping sick babies and children, will be holding its second annual Sail the Solent challenge in October.

In one long weekend teams of would-be sailors, from complete landlubbers to more experienced crewmates, will be trained by professionals to race 40-foot yachts around the Isle of Wight.

The event is open to both individuals and teams and the adventure begins on Friday 15 October.

New fleet for Sunsail WORLDWIDE sailing giant Sunsail chose the start of Cowes week to launch ‘Sunsail Racing’ focusing on making yacht racing accessible to anyone.

And it will set sail with a new matched fleet of 40-foot yachts to replace the 37-foot Sunfast 37s that have become a familiar year-round sight in the Solent with their own

class in Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race.

America’s Cup back at Cowes AMERICA’S Cup history was scheduled to be repeated at Cowes Week.

The two hottest match racing skippers in the world, TEAMORIGIN’s Ben Ainslie, and BMW ORACLE Racing’s James Spithill, were set to lead their teams contesting the 1851 Cup. Britain’s TEAMORIGIN will be the first potential challenger for the next America’s Cup to race head-to-head with BMW ORACLE Racing, winners of the 33rd America’s Cup. Competition was planned for the Solent and around the Isle of Wight where a race won by the New York yacht America gave rise to the America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in the international sport.

The 1851 Cup celebrates this event with racing close to West Cowes as possible to give spectators a close-up view plus a special race around the Isle of Wight.

The racing schedule was for three short match races per day on Tuesday 3 Wednesday 4 and Friday 6 August, starting from 1430.

The Round the Island race was planned for Thursday 5 August racing clockwise, replicating the direction of the yachts back in 1851.

Aged 30, Australian James Spithill is the youngest-ever America’s Cup skipper. Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie, aged 33, skipper and helmsman of TEAMORIGIN, is four times Olympic medallist with three golds and one silver.

On top of the world DOUBLE British Universities Match Racing Champion, Andy Shaw and his crew, are celebrating after being crowned World Universities Match Racing champions following an emphatic win at the fifth FISU World Match Racing Championships in Crete.

Shaw, 20, from Southampton University and a member of Itchenor Sailing Club, is the first British winner for ten years. He won 17 of his 19 races.

It happened at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and the 300 Optimists successfully co-ordinated eight tacks in a unique challenge that had never been

attempted previously.

The challenge took place before the practice race which kicked off an exciting week of sailing in the Volvo Musto Optimist British National and Open Championship.

MORE than 800 competitors from 53 nations have entered the fifth installment the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.

Many of the world’s top sailors were expected at Weymouth and Portland from the 9 - 14 August for the final event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Some of these competitors are returning to Olympic class sailing after a break for events such as the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup. Triple Olympic gold and silver medallist Ben Ainslie announced his entry nearly two years to the day after he secured his third Olympic gold in Beijing.

Ainslie who has not raced an Olympic Class boat at Weymouth and Portland for five or six years said: “I have to accept I’m not going to be 100 percent race ready, 100 per cent Finn fit and at my ideal racing weight but the benefits of competing far outweigh any frustrations I may experience as long as I’m realistic and possibly more importantly, other people are realistic about what I can achieve on such limited preparation.”

Triple triumph for lawyer AN incident-packed voyage by Cumbrian lawyer Boyd Holmes has scooped three yachting trophies.

Boyd’s journey from Scotland to Norway and back included close encounters with killer whales, a mid-sea rescue and a clash with security forces.

Boyd, 58, from Carlisle was awarded the Royal Highland Yacht Club’s Garvellach Cup for Endeavour and the Clyde Cruising Club’s Coats Cup, first presented in 1911, for the year’s best cruise.

The Cruising Association honoured the voyage by presenting Boyd with its Dolphin Cup. Boyd and his wife Kitty, a family doctor, made the five-week return voyage last summer aboard Damsel, their 37-foot Jeanneau Sun Odyssey. www.norwayourway.moonfruit.com

Kiwis ski off to home and new record THE Ultimate Ride team were due to set off from London on August 1 in an attempt to break the world personal watercraft record, in a 32,000 km epic journey through some of the planet’s most treacherous waterways.

Hundreds of PW riders were expected to accompany the Ultimate

Ride team as they departed from London’s Excel Marina on the River Thames to boost awareness of cancer prevention.

Pilot and author Jeremy Burfoot is leading the team riding by sea and the waterways of Europe, around the Arabian Peninsula via the old Arab Spice Sea trade wind routes, down the western coast of India, via Singapore then all the way to Auckland, New Zealand.

He said: “The world will be watching the progress of my team so it’s a tremendous opportunity to get the message out about the early prevention of cancer, and the need for regular health checks, to a whole new audience around the world, “My own melanoma was totally preventable and many cancers respond well to early detection. We’ll be out to enjoy it as well as minimise risks, which will include giant canal and river barges, along with storms,

NEWS IN BRIEF Ellen’s last decade SAILING legend Ellen MacArthur tells the story of her hugely eventful last ten years in her new book Full Circle.

She tells of the trials of fame, her frustrations in missing the record for the West-East transatlantic crossing by just 75 minutes in 2004; the triumph of her record-breaking, nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2004–5, and the fateful trip to South Georgia after which she decided to leave competitive sailing for ever. Beacons greet Tall Ships BEACONS warned of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and they will flare up again to welcome the Tall Ships to the North East of England.

Hartlepool is expecting up to one million visitors between 7-10 August when around 70 Tall Ships sail into town from Kristiansand in Norway on the second and final leg of the Races.

Five Tees Valley councils have teamed up to organise an Olympic torch type event which will see a Tall Ships flame passed through the local authority areas.

The Tall Ships’ Races are an internationally acclaimed annual

competition organised by Sail Training International and held every summer in European waters.

Each year between 70 and 100 vessels from 15-20 countries, crewed by some 5,000 to 6,000 young people from more than 30 countries take part.

The ships are of different sizes and different speeds but they must be in port at Hartlepool Quays by 12 noon on Saturday 7 August.

On Tuesday 10 August will bid farewell to the ships as they parade out of Hartlepool Quays, along the coast to their next destination. www.hartlepooltallships2010.com

Yachtsman Gerry Lowe, filming the arrival of the 61-metre Balmoral with 500 passengers on a Bristol Channel cruise also captured the yacht leaving the nearby marina cutting across the path of the Balmoral which was entering the harbour’s narrow entrance.

Gerry Lowe said: “The yacht

missed the ship by a few yards.

I was quite horrified. Only the quick thinking of the Balmoral helmsman prevented a head-on collision.”

Balmoral captain Ted Davies said: “It was a very close call. The yacht disappeared under the bow.

If we’d hit, we would certainly have rolled him over.”

“The yacht just carried on nonchalantly.”

The MCA and Watchet harbour authority are investigating.

Service windsurfers plan toughest test PERSONNEL from all three armed services are planning the ‘ultimate’ windsurfing test in UK waters by sailing around the Isle of Wight Inspired by a wounded soldier.

The aim is to raise thousands of pounds for the three main service charities, and Help for Heroes.

Rifleman Craig Wood, 19, from Doncaster was serving with 2nd Battalion The Rifles in July 2009 when he was injured by an improvised explosive device losing lost both legs and his left hand in the explosion.

A keen windsurfer before the incident, Craig’s ambition is to one day take up the sport again.

“He has been a great inspiration to us,” said Maj Gareth Baker of the Royal Engineers, and Secretary of Army Windsurfing, “I wanted to do something for service charities and Craig provided a focus.”

While the circumference of the Isle of Wight is approximately 56 miles, the trip will be nearer 100

with wind and direction changes.

The tri-service team will take on the challenge in relays but some of the windsurfers, Maj Baker included, will try to take on the voyage as an individual challenge.

They reckon the circumnavigation will take ten hours and will be the equivalent of running three back-to-

back marathons.

“It will take a huge amount of mental and physical determination,” said Lieutenant Philip Bent, RN who serves as a weapons engineer. “I have raced around the island six times on yachts, so for me windsurfing around is the next logical step. It is a big challenge and will push us to

the limit.”

Another participant with a special interest in Craig Wood is Flight Sergeant Stuart Tilbury. He is an RAF technician based at the Rehabilitation Support Workshop at Headley Court where Craig is based. He oversees the manufacture of prosthetic limbs, orthotics and other medical devices.

Craig said: “I loved windsurfing and am determined to take it up again. It may take time, but I am sure I can do it.”

Depending on wind and tides, they hope to undertake the challenge during 13 – 19 September, or 11 – 19 October.

NEWS IN BRIEF Historic link TEIGNMOUTH’S 102-yearold ferry linking the town with Shaldon across the River Teign in Devon has been sold. The 35foot black and white wooden boat which cost £27 when built in 1908 is being replaced by a modern ferry.

Going solo again

MIKE Perham, the youngest person to sail around the world single-handed, has announced plans to become the youngest person to fly solo around the world.

Mike, 18, announced his plan at the Farnborough International Air Show, 11 months after returning to a hero’s welcome in Portsmouth last August after his epic solo voyage.

Keelboat squad THE RYA and UKSA have announced they are to continue their British Keelboat Academy (BKA) partnership beyond 2010 as applications open for 2011’s squad selection trials in September.

MORE than 100 traditional boats made their way to Plymouth for the fifth Sutton Harbour Classic Boat Rally that is part of the Sutton Harbour Festival.

Classic boats on show included the replica Cornish lugger Spirit of Mystery in which Pete Goss completed a re-enactment of an 11,800-mile journey from Cornwall to Australia last year.

The Tamar sailing barge Shamrock, usually resident at the National Trust’s Cotehele Estate in the heart of the Tamar Valley, also made a rare appearance while the 96-foot two-masted topsail schooner Johanna Lucretia, built in Belgium on 1945, sailed over from Northern Ireland after a long restoration.

Dorothy Merrett, from the rally organising committee and one of the driving forces behind the new boatshow, said: “Ever since the classic boat rally moved to Sutton

Harbour five years ago it has grown in popularity so we’re delighted to be adding this major shoreside element this year.”

Challengers race back to Hull

A SPECTACULAR welcome greeted the crews of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race as they arrived back in Hull at the end of their 35,000-mile circumnavigation.

The return to Hull Marina marked the end of a challenge of a lifetime for doctors, students, teachers, lawyers, engineers and a taxi driver who were among the crew members.

Tens of thousands of people lined the banks of the Humber and the quayside of Hull Marina to welcome home the crews after a gruelling ten-month challenge.

Cork’s victory in Race 14 denied Hull & Humber their much coveted home port win but their second place finish allowed the ‘big orange boat’ to leapfrog Jamaica Lightning Bolt in the final standings to finish fourth overall.

Clilper 09-10 champions, Spirit of Australia, finished third in the final stage of the 14-race challenge, minutes ahead of Cape Breton Island, whose performance guaranteed them a place on the final podium. The Canadian team finish third overall, just 1.3 points behind Team Finland.

NEWS IN BRIEF Seal of approval OPERA singer Paul Chandler, 52, is practising his part in Verdi’s La Traviata by singing to seals while scuba-diving off the south Devon coast. “I thought I would try some notes by singing through the regulator which helps me breathe and soon I was surrounded by curious seals,” he said. “The seals seem to enjoy the singing and come up to show their appreciation by nuzzling my arm.”

Aerial attacks PENSIONER Gery Myers is a prisoner in his home after attacks from a seagull have resulted in hospital treatment. Mr Myers, 79, has been injured repeatedly by the bird which swoops every time he leaves his home near Truro, Cornwall. Now he’s been told that Cornwall County Council is powerless to help because seagulls are a protected species.

Ferry grounded PLANS for a fast ferry service between Torquay and Brixham in Devon, have been halted because Torbay Council cannot afford the £80,000 subsidy for the first year’s operation. Stagecoach, the company interested in running the ferry, said it needed the subsidy to provide an all-yearround service.

Fight to keep the Monarch ENTHUSIASTS have launched a campaign to keep one of the UK’s three working paddle steamers in the country as she is under threat of being taken across The Channel.

Monarch is the smallest commercial paddle steamer in the world. At 42 feet long and powered by a compound steam engine and oil fired boiler, she has given pleasure trips in Kent, Cornwall and latterly on the Isle of Wight.

NEWS IN BRIEF Flood project NEW harbour gates and extra quay walls have been built in a £400,000 scheme to prevent flooding in Polperro, Cornwall.

The harbour gates are closed 100 times a year to protect fishing and pleasure craft from storms in all tides and surge conditions.

AS the boats line up at the end of the month for the start off the Royal Yacht Squadron of the 50th Cowes Classic Celebrating the anniversary of the Cowes Torquay Powerboat Race I’ll be enjoying the festivities on shore in the race village.

Under doctor’s orders I am not allowed to race for three months which will mean I won’t be able to retain the First Lady Driver trophy that I’ve secured the last two years running.

Unfortunately during testing for rounds five and six of the UIM World Championship Grand Prix of the Sea in Poltu Quatu, Sardinia, Throttleman Patrick Huybreghts and I in Spirit of Belgium were involved in a second serious incident in a month.

The conditions were good, there were lazy rolling swells and we came off the crest of the wave as I have done many times before. We both had full control and it felt fine. But, as the bow landed it was destroyed on impact, causing the boat to stop violently. We were thrown forward on to the console.

I could feel the water around my calves and realised Patrick was only semi conscious. I radioed for urgent assistance and the SNAV OSG team were with us immediately.

50 years of classic racing THE British Powerboat Racing Club will host the 50th Cowes Classic Celebrating the anniversary of the Cowes Torquay race founded by Sir Max Aitken.

This year’s celebrations are due to start at Cowes on Wednesday August 25 and will include the UIM Marathon Series World Cup including the Solent 100 race on Friday 27 and the Historic Cowes Torquay Cowes on Saturday August 29.

More than 40 of the world’s top UIM Marathon Class racing boats will be competing over the weekend.

The focal point of the festival will be the Race Village at Cowes Yacht Haven. Visitors will be able to see the dry and wet pits close up and mix and savour the atmosphere and

from, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Great Britain and entries expected from Italy, Russia, Germany, Norway, Poland, Estonia, Slovakia, and Portugal.

The British team are made up of youngsters from Offshore and Circuit racing disciplines as well as competitors from the Honda Youth RIB Championship organised by the RYA. All of these youngsters show promise and the skills to become the next generation of British and World Champion powerboat racers.

A couple of years ago a few of the top UK racers were challenged to compete against the youngsters in boat handling skills and they wiped the floor with nearly every one of us. So I wish them all luck for the competition and I’m sure they will do us all proud.

The competition is extremely close and the top teams are frequently separated by less than a 1/100ths of a second which leaves no room for errors.

I would like to offer huge thanks to them and the safety crews and medics for their help and support.

This incident, coming so soon after Malta has made me stop and reflect on my life as a powerboat racer and the dangers involved.

As many top water sports men and women know the sea is just so unpredictable. Although I take every precaution and train as hard as I can for each race nothing can prepare you for the feeling when you face real danger and life threatening conditions.

I’ve been very lucky in my racing career and have only had three incidents in the 15 plus years I’ve been racing, but when two happen back-to-back in such a short space of time it makes you stop and take heed.

This time I was lucky I only suffered head injuries and broke my nose in two places. I’m now well on the way to recovery but will finish the season watching the sport I love from the shore and deciding which way forward I go from here.

Flying down waves driven by the wind Geoff Holt The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.

NOW in it’s 35th year, Blind Week has just completed its “best ever” event according to all involved.

Conceived by yachting journalist Des Sleightholme by a desire to help a blind friend in the mid 70’s, Blind Week has provided the opportunity for hundreds of visually impaired people throughout the country to go sailing at sea.

Royal Southampton Yacht Club and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, this year saw 23 yachts of all sizes with their volunteer skipper/owners take 46 blind sailors cruising.

Sailing out of Falmouth, the fleet split into four groups and cruised as far afield as the Scillies and enjoyed some of the best cruising conditions of any previous event, no doubt due in part to the superb weather.

One of the Blind Week’s longestserving supporters, now in their 20th year, is Coutts Sailing Club which this year supplied three of the yachts with sighted skippers and crew.

“I have met some great people and when I think I’m having a tough day at the office, all I have to do is think of the challenges some of my VI friends face every day, and life doesn’t seem so bad.

“This really hit home with me on my first ever Blind Week some years ago. We had been beating into some rough seas across Weymouth Bay. After breakfast, it was my job as mate to go below to do the washing up.

“When I finally summoned the courage to do so, I found Nicole, one of our completely blind crew, nearly finished; every plate, cup and saucer

absolutely spotless.

“Having then wiped down all the surfaces, she stripped the cooker and cleaned that too. When she was done, she turned to me and said; ‘I think I’ve finished, can you please just check’.

“The following morning, she nearly poured orange juice on her cereal simply because the cartons are the same shape and feel as the milk.”

The event has grown considerably over the years and so too the organisation.

First run under the auspices of the RYA Seamanship Foundation

and later RYA Sailability, it has more recently been run by Grant Morris and supported by the charity Sporting Activities for the Disabled Trust underwriting any costs which are kept to an absolute minimum with most participants covering their own expenses.

“You draw strength and self-esteem from this experience. You find a role and position on the boat which suits you and you work to your strengths. It gives you a fantastic sense of being at one with the elements and being able to fight against them and come out winning.

“There is nothing so satisfying as making a passage from one harbour to another and steering the boat through difficult conditions.

The thrill and feeling of driving the boat and knowing that you’re responsible for keeping it on as straight a course as you can so you make the fastest passage possible.

“The feeling of flying down waves being driven by the wind is a fabulous experience and is something that should be experienced by both blind and sighted people. As someone once said ‘Life’s just to short not too’”.

Time to get a Proper Job In the drink

IF you are sailing back from Brittany, where I hope you will have tasted Ar-Men bottleconditioned ale (All at Sea June) you may perhaps make landfall at Falmouth or Fowey for Falmouth Week 7-14 August.

If you do, many local Cornish ales, which are also bottle-conditioned specialities, await you, seemingly indicating a revival of the genre over here. Plus real ciders on draught.

The St Austel brewery, founded 1851, owns 176 carefully nurtured pubs all over Cornwall, with one in every likely port of call and supplies all the main sailing clubs a cruising yachtsman will ever want to get to, plus two in St Mary’s on the Scilly Isles.

St Austel’s leading beer ‘Tribute’ is on draught at 4.2 per cent abv and a great local success. It was originally a novelty, first brewed only in 1999 for the eclipse of the sun that year.

It was called ‘Daylight Robbery’ then. It proved so popular they decided to keep it, renamed ‘Tribute’.

Originally they made three brews a week; now it’s three a day. Eight per cent Cornish barley and English hops make for a light amber, sharply refreshing brew.

Popular it may be but I found the alternative draught, called ‘Proper Job’, an even better summer drink. IPA-style at 4.5 per cent abv, it is light, refreshing, with a lemon squeeze touch to it.

Maybe following a trend, for take-home trade Proper Job is also made as bottleconditioned beer and strong at 5.5 per cent abv. It’s full of flavour and a great sundowner sipper.

Admiral’s Ale is another St Austel special, at five per cent abv a tasty beer with a jaunty label for sailing folk.

Bottle conditioning means the yeast in the bottle is live and that produces the sparkle. So don’t keep it too long, pour it gently at an angle and never totally invert the bottle. Otherwise the natural yeast sediment may make the beer cloudy.

Sometimes, though, cloudy is intended and a nice St Austell novelty is its ‘Clouded Yellow’, a wheat beer unusual in England but popular in Belgium, like Hoegaarden. Also bottleconditioned, it tastes like wheat with hints of vanilla and cloves. Serve cool, not chilled, they

say, so a good beer for on board kept at bilge temperature.

The best local cider, found on draught in the Royal Fowey Yacht Club, is Cornish Rattler, at six per cent.

This is a delightful club with lovely views over the river and the Troy is an interesting local one-design class to watch racing in the river.

They can feed you, too. Cornish Rattler is a perfect accompaniment to the fresh fish pie rather than a wine. And, of course, the chef also recommends it with any pork dish.

A bit further up-river is Gallants Sailing Club, with a dinghy landing stage. A friendly welcome and Cornish beers here, too.

THE Solent in August has been likened to a knife-fight in a telephone box.

So how can you get away from it all?

The answer is to flee east or west.

If you are sailing with a group who simply want a relaxing holiday – in truth, they would rather be in the Med – Brighton makes an excellent base. Brighton has a first rate modern marina from which you can enjoy relaxed day sailing and return to a vibrant city in the

evening with a range of entertainment to keep three generations happy.

Chichester and the Solent are also within easy reach for more scenic and challenging cruising.

AS the economic belt tightens that week you had planned in the Med might have to go. In the second of our series, Paul Harvey looks for ways to cut the cost of your annual sailing holiday by chartering on the south, east and west coasts of England and Wales.

18 The east coast of England has two things going for it. First, it offers good access to the North Sea and from there to the ports of France and Belgium. Then there’s the extensive river sailing. Ipswich is the hub of east coast sailing and Britannia Sailing is one of the area’s largest charter companies.

Britannia Sailing (www. britanniasailingschool.co.uk Tel: 01473 787 019) is based at Shotley Marina, Ipswich, and is run by Paul Blackett.

Britannia has eight boats available for charter. The largest, a threecabin, eight-berth, 2005 Jeanneau 40.3, is available in high season – June, July and August – for £1,908 for seven days. A mid-week charter is also offered – 12-00 Monday to 12-00 Friday – and charged at their weekend rate of £968 plus ten per cent (£1,064).

For smaller parties, Britannia have a Beneteau 321, with two cabins, for £1,230 for seven days and a mid-week charter at the weekend rate of £690 plus ten per cent (£759). This is one of the best value charters All At Sea has found. Other boats in their fleet include a Hanse 342 and a Moody S38. Skipper hire is £249 per day.

Britannia has no hard-and-fast rules on qualification except that one crew members must have a VHF licence. As with all chartering companies, they will need to see your logged sailing experience.

Shotley Marina offers easy access to open water and the ports of northern

Europe. It is also a first class base to try your hand at river sailing on the Stour, Orwell and Deben – but brush up on your tides.

Also based close to Ipswich is Anglian Sea School in Levington (www.eastanglianseaschool.com Tel: 01473 659 992).

They have two boats for charter.

Both their Beneteau 39.3 and Jeanneau 36i, with three cabins each, cost £1,360 for seven days in high season. Five days Mid-week costs £1,260. They also offer bareboat day sailing at £305 per day, something not widely available in the south and Solent.

However, they do insist on a Yachtmaster Practical qualification and a VHF licence. A skipper is available at £245 per day.

If craggy coasts, Atlantic swells, rivers and southern Ireland sound more appealing, then the west coast of England has a lot to offer.

If you are unsure whether to go river sailing or coastal, Pembrokeshire Cruising (www. pembrokeshirecruising.co.uk Tel 01646 602 500), based at Neyland Yacht Haven, offers superb access to both.

Turn left and you can sail the sheltered Cleddau Estuary. Turn right and the Atlantic is all yours.

Lundy Island, Padstow and the Scilly Isles, or even the unspoilt coastline of Southern Ireland are there for the adventurous.

Pembrokeshire Cruising has four yachts available, from a Jeanneau Sun

Odyssey 42i to a Hunter Horizon 27.

The Jeanneau costs £1,700 for seven days – £1,200 mid-week – and the Hunter £430 mid-week and £635 for seven days in high season.

If you want to explore the Irish Sea, North Wales makes an excellent base.

North Wales Yacht Chartering (www.northwalesyc.co.uk Tel: 07903 955 180) is based in the Menai Straits at Port Dinorwic, the only Grade II listed marina in the UK. The location not only provides access to sailing on the north coast of Wales with its beaches and coves but also the Isle of Man and Scotland.

NWYC’s Harmony 34 was launched in 2006 and has three cabins able to accommodate six people and costs £1,350 for seven days (Saturday – Saturday) with a mid-week charter at £675 which is excellent value for such a yacht in a stunning location. Day rates, by arrangement, are £280. All prices are for high season.

If you want to try something different or if your tidal calculations are a bit rusty, how about lake sailing? Lake Windermere in Cumbria is the largest lake in England at 11 miles long, one mile wide and it has 18 islands. Its name comes from the Scandinavian for ‘lake of a man called Vinandr’. ‘Mere’ means a long thin lake in old English.

OB Sailing (www.obsailing. co.uk , Tel: 07836 525 992) has been running for seven years and is based at Bowness on the western shore of the lake.

They have four Beneteau Oceanis’ ranging from a three-cabin 343, to two two-cabin 311s. Their two-cabin, six-berth 37 costs £1,090 for seven days or £880 mid-week. A threecabin, eight-berth 343 is £980 for seven days and £810 mid-week in high season. OB says they can offer any charter period a customer needs.

As for experience, Neil Crowder from OB, said: “We require three years’ sailing experience or Day Skipper Practical and two years’ sailing experience as a minimum,” but added: “We know many people have never taken any formal qualifications and still sail to a high standard, so please tell us what you have done when you enquire about a booking”.

Windermere offers flat water, stunning scenery and easy navigation.

You will never be out of sight of land. If you have a crew prone to seasickness, they will welcome your choice. But it can also ‘blow’ due to downdraughts from the surrounding hills, funneling of local winds and thermal effects. The lake can also get busy, so a keen lookout is still demanded and mooring is more challenging.

Though Lake Windermere is the smallest sailing area All At Sea has reviewed, the area offers a huge breadth of other activities from walking, cycling and horse riding, to shooting and flying - if you don’t want to sail 24/7. Many of the hotels and restaurants around the lake have their own jetties and some allow overnight mooring.

Amelie Rose is a replica Pilot Cutter – launched in 2009 – to take you back to the 1800s but without the scurvy. Skippered charters start from Poole, Dorset, for between two and 14 days sailing in the Solent, the Channel Islands, the west coast and Isles of Scilly. It is a unique way to build your miles.

A seven-day cruise to the Channel Islands costs £795 per person, leaving 27 August. Daysailing is from £85 per person. Occasionally, Topsail offer crewing jobs for enthusiastic volunteers.

Sailing on the east and west coasts is a wonderful contrast to the Solent’s special appeal. Each marina and port offers something unique. In mid summer, when the south coast and Solent get crowded – both on and off the water – the east and west coasts offer relaxing yet adventurous boating.

The only downside is that there are fewer charter companies and consequently the prices tend to be a bit higher. But, as we found, there are some real bargains to be had too.

On the west coast, Pembrokeshire Cruising’s Hunter 27 at £635 for seven days based in a first class marina stands out, as does Britannia Sailing’s Beneteau 321. Many of the companies featured offer late deals, so give them a call.

Brits lay down gauntlet at Sail for Gold BRITAIN’S sailors are top of the leader board in the ISAF World Cup Sailing Series, a sporting achievement tht we Brits can be proud of in light of recent southern hemisphere events.

August 9 to 14 will see the final Sailing World Cup event – the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta – hit Weymouth and Portland, and with the French and the Aussies snapping at the Brits’ heels it’ s shaping up to be a real nail biter.

Skandia Team GBR have landed 24 World Cup medals in total since the opening round in Melbourne last December, with Ed Wright (Finn) in pole position to retain his overall 2009 World Cup Series crown at Sail for Gold having already landed two golds in Miami and Palma.

Umbrella: these have a real use on board. A good strong golfing umbrella can be put to good use to keep the rain off, particularly in the dinghy but most importantly for me, it acts as an excellent safety net to catch any screws, nuts, washers et al when working on any part of the boat which has no deck underneath.

I SEARCHED the internet for a list of least useful items to be found on a yacht and came up with the following: Wheelbarrow: though difficult to stow except on a largish boat, it could well help with getting provisions delivered.

Spirit level: during maintenance it could be useful in getting the water line correctly positioned.

Bananas make other fruit ripen quickly, so they could be useful too.

On the other hand you may, on a long passage, not wish your fruit to ripen too quickly.

Grand piano: I saw an upright piano installed in a 40-foot yacht a few boat shows ago, though I have never heard of a grand piano except on boats of considerable size.

Lowestoft Haven Marina

Good anchoring BEFORE going into an anchorage, do you work out how much chain you need to lay out or do you make a guestimate?

If you are staying overnight it is essential that you work out what the least depth of water there is going to be at low water so that you do not ground.

You must also have an idea of the amount of scope to lay out, not only so that you have sufficient chain on the sea bed, but also so there is no chance of swinging close to another moored boat.

Always remember to add the freeboard – the height of bow roller above the surface of the sea – to the maximum water depth needed, multiplying this by the relevant factor dependent on the likely wind and tide strengths, the size and weight of boat, anchor tackle and the nature of the sea bed.

A look at the chart in well surveyed areas will give you an idea of the nature of the sea bed and it is worth knowing which “soils� hold well and which do not: Poor: Thin sand, weed, gravel, shells.

Medium: Soft sand, soft mud.

Good: Most sand and mud.

From the sublime to the achievable Jane Swan Project Manager, The Green Blue

‘WANTED: buyer for £110m green yacht’ was the headline in a Sunday Times article.

A hybrid superyacht called Why (Wally Hybrid Yacht) with an array of eco features, 58 metres long by 38 metres wide and with only 100 people in the world fitting the profile of a ‘certain type’ of potential buyer, most likely to be someone who has already been involved in changing the world in other areas.

Fascinating stuff and if the yacht and its eventual buyer play some part in changing boating behaviour then great but in reality we know first-hand that achieving pro environmental behaviour change across a whole boating sector is a little harder to do.

One thing we’ve learned at The Green Blue is that the easiest way to effect change is to make it easy and enjoyable, rule number one.

Sounds simple enough but trying

to make recycling, waste disposal and sewage enjoyable is no mean feat. That said, Dan Reading, our Sustainable Facilities Officer, has managed to do just that. How did he do it?

Well, that’s where rule number two comes into play, namely identify benefits that people can really relate to – whether it’s saving money (that’s usually quite a good start and something we’ve been able to help with in bucket loads), reducing energy usage or giving your business a competitive edge.

For individual boaters, the values are just as simple – follow a few key tips, such as recycle on board and carry oil/fuel spill kits and we avoid unnecessary legislation and keep the waters we sail in clean.

Rule number three is just that – ‘The Rule of Three’. With cries of ‘green fatigue’ amongst the general public, barely a day goes by without a new missive coming through the letterbox from Government, energy companies or local councils urging you to go green. So good advice is

to keep it short and sweet, and follow The Rule of Three which is simply that people generally remember things in threes!

Rule number four – work closely with partners. Having the backing of both the RYA and BMF makes The Green Blue unique and opens many doors. This is further reinforced by support from The Crown Estate and Scottish Natural Heritage; and credible partnerships with Henri Lloyd, Sailing Networks, Sunsail, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Parkstone Yacht Club and Dean & Reddyhoff, to name just a few.

And rule number five is make it achievable and our partnership with Jeremy Rogers to build a new greener version of the classic Contessa 32 represents just that. With Calypso exhibiting at the PSP Southampton Boat Show next month, visitors and exhibitors will be able to experience a practical example of sustainability in action. WHILE you’re out on the water, the direction of the wind can have a big effect on your sailing experience, so mastering our guide will help you on your way to becoming an expert sailor!

So wind direction is where the wind is blowing, right? Wrong!

The main thing to remember is that a wind direction forecast will tell you the direction that the wind is coming from, not going to, which is important to know so you don’t get blown back towards the shore! Make sure you master the points of the compass in your sailing area before you take on the wind.

Don’t forget that those valleys, hills and buildings near the shore, and even any trees, can make the direction of the wind tougher to predict. It’s a great idea to get to know your sailing area before you head to the water, so why not impress people by having a look around before you set off!

Be shore to remember this…

When you’re sailing near the coast, the direction of the wind can cause different things to happen, so try to learn the differences between:

Onshore wind

This is when the wind is blowing towards the coast. The breaking waves that are caused can make launching and recovery a bit harder, but don’t worry because it will be easier sailing home. Plain sailing!

Offshore wind

Launching and recovering will be a breeze because the wind will be blowing out to sea, but watch out as the waves will get bigger offshore and can blow you further out to sea.

Sea breezes

These happen in summer, when air from the warm land rises and falls over the cooler sea before being drawn back to the shore.

Being blown back to that ice cream shop is a handy side effect!

COWES Week is the one of the world’s most celebrated yachting events and it is firmly part of the British summer. As the small island town gears up to welcome tens of thousands of visitors, Lawry Sear talks to Stuart Quarrie (left), the man who has to make it all happen.

STUART Quarrie is a master of spinning plates. Before the first gun went on Saturday 31 July to signal the start of Cowes Week 2010, Quarrie was already a month down the road to planning changes for next year’s spectacular.

The Chief Executive of Cowes Week was used to navigating his way through difficulties when he was sailing professionally in the

Whitbread Round the World race in 1997-98. It was sound preparation for the 12 years he has been running Cowes Week – the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.

Sailing runs in the blood for Quarrie, 60, who learned his skills in Salcombe, Devon, as a child before joining the National Sailing Centre as a junior instructor at the age of 24.

When the centre closed in 1987 he was the chief instructor and deputy director and went on to set up and run a sailing school teaching big boat racing in Lymington, Hampshire, for four years.

He became a professional sailor and was navigating in a middle leg of the Whitbread when he got a call from his wife Sue telling him about the Cowes job. His life since has become a constant roller-coaster moving from one Cowes Week to the next but always listening to what the sailors, the spectators and the town want and making the event relevant to them.

“We want to make it a regatta for everyone, not just the elite, the super VIP, the world champions and the Olympians but a regatta which everyone can come to and enjoy,” he said, “Cowes is inclusive now. It used to have an exclusive air as a regatta for the toffs rather than ordinary people and that has been changing since before I joined.

“The change reflects society’s changes and the improvements in communications with the worldwide web. Now communication can be instant and it has all helped the change.”

Cowes attracts 8,000 competitors sailing in more than 900 boats.

Its all-time high was 1,040 and everyone considered that the waters of the Solent and the shoreside entertainment were becoming too crowded.

And sailing has widened its appeal as mass production boatbuilding has brought yacht prices down and made them accessible to more people along with the growth in boat charters so anyone can hire a boat to enter for Cowes Week.

Quarrie is a part of a three-man full-time team which makes Cowes Week happen. He is backed up by IT sub-contractors - Next Generation Partners – which is an integral part of the team responsible for all IT elements including its website and results service.

But the full-time team is backed

up by volunteers and temporary staff totalling up to 60 during Cowes Week itself. And the sailing clubs provide some 250 people to act as the 80 race officers needed each day to set courses and manage the racing.

And these are supplemented by hundreds more involved in catering and other shoreside activities.

The 40 races a day during the regatta are staged in some of the most testing waters for racing with the Solent’s strong tides, mudbanks and sandbanks and unique sea breezes and wind patterns.

The big fleets with a huge variety of boat classes on the water at the same time make this regatta challenging, interesting and difficult.

It is this combination which attracts top sailors from across the globe including world champions and Olympic medal winners.

“It is a unique festival on the water and ashore,” said Quarrie.

Up-to-date figures are not available but ten years ago Cowes Week brought a net £5m to the Isle of Wight and contributed significantly to the £68m that yachting has brought to the island each year.

Since then the figures can only have increased in their significance.

This spectacular event is established as part of Britain’s social calendar fitting between Goodwood in July and the start of the grouse season on August 12. And it creates this eight-day festival on a budget of £600,000 and supported by a team of seven sponsors and a dozen official suppliers.

“We run on a very tight budget.

Without a title sponsor for the last two years we have had to make economies. There are things we would like to do such as have GPS tracking on all boats but that would cost us £25,000.

“It can’t happen for the moment.

But we plan to introduce new things and are hopeful a new title sponsor and lead partner will follow the excellent work we built up over 14 years with Skandia,” said Quarrie.

“The signs are good for next year.”

Quarrie rarely switches off from his Cowes Week baby, except perhaps when on his 30-foot cruiser. And after 12 years he still gets nervous as the event draws closer. It’s a big responsibility keeping up to 100,000 spectators and the competitors happy all the time.

Things can and do go wrong in a sport so dependent on the weather and with race courses set each day based on the latest Met Office forecasts.

If the forecast is wrong the course will not be laid to create the best race conditions. One man with the top job in sailing is responsible for all this and he gets the feedback when the wind has died or has been in the wrong direction.

“I get my biggest buzz when I am around the regatta centre with thousands of happy smiling sailors who have had an enjoyable day.

But every day we are listening and learning and taking note of what we can do better next year. The job never stops.”

Fireworks gift to Cowes Week AN ANONYMOUS donor who loves Cowes Week and fireworks has paid for the spectacular Cowes Week firework display for the second year running.

The £50,000 fireworks extravaganza is traditional finale to a wonderful evening of entertainment in the air and on the water for 75,000 competitors and spectators on Friday, 6 August.

The entertainment starts with three exciting flying displays, including the Red Arrows, followed by a rescue display by the RNLI before the stunning annual fireworks as the sun goes down.

You have to grab your vantage point early to watch the formation fly-past at 6pm by a former-Red Arrows Gnat, flown by Justin Hughes, a retired RAF and Red Arrows pilot. This is followed by a ten - minute display by a Sea Vixen, flown by Lieutenant

Commander Matt Whitfield. The Sea Vixen is the only remaining aircraft of its type in the world.

The Red Arrows begin their aerobatic displays at 7.30pm with their death-defying passes at high speed and low level.

And they are followed at 8pm by the RNLI rescue demonstration displaying the skills and commitment needed by the volunteer crews in their lifesaving work in al weathers. Their display takes place off Cowes Parade.

The Cowes Week fireworks begin at 9.30pm and light up the night sky for about half an hour.

They are fired into the air from barges and illuminate hundreds of boats against the skyline.

More than 75,000 spectators are expected so it is important to get your position to view these and the other displays early.

The best places to view are either from the water or from Cowes Parade, Castle

Cowes Week facts The first regatta was held in 1826 and Cowes Week is one of the longest running sporting events in the UK. The week lasts eight days until 7 August.

It is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.

Almost 1,000 yachts compete in 40 classes and more than 35 races a day.

The harbour is closed to traffic during the fireworks display and afterwards there is a mandatory speed limit of 15 knots as far as the top of Southampton Water.

Cowes Week CEO Stuart Quarrie said: ”The fireworks are paid for by a single anonymous donor. The total costs of the event are £75,000 and we, as organisers, pay less than £25,000 as one person just loves fireworks and Cowes Week has given the display.

The remainder comes from donations. local organisations, the council, competitors from entry fees and individuals.”

A public collection to help cover costs will be made in the evening.

Rubbing shoulders A HOST of world class sailors and celebrities join in the fun and competition at Cowes Week. And this year is no exception.

Television personality Bear Grylls, Round the World sailing legend Roland Jourdain, double Olympic gold medallist Roman Hagara and Britain’s Mike Golding and Ben Ainslie are among the faces to spot among the action this year.

Many more will be joining the Artemis Challenge on Tuesday, 3 August. The celebrity names taking part won’t be confirmed until just before the start but the race will follow the usual format of Pro/ Celeb. And previous contestants have included Royalty and sports and TV stars.

The British and US America’s Cup teams will be racing from Tuesday, 3 August until Friday 6 August and the spectacular Extreme Sailing Series has a wealth of sailing talent amongst its skippers.

WHO will win the coveted Ladies Day Trophy to be presented on Wednesday, 4 August.

The award was introduced in 2006 to raise the profile of sailing as one of few mainstream sports where men and women compete on equal terms. It was won last year by round the world yachtswoman Sam Davies.

Cowes Week’s sales and marketing director, Michelle Warner said: “The number of female skippers has leapt by 150 per cent since 2002. Ladies Day is an opportunity to celebrate women in sailing and spread the message that Cowes Week is fully inclusive.”

The award goes to female sailors who have achieved something outstanding for the sport – from the Corinthian sailor and those overcoming difficulties in order to succeed in sailing, to those who have undertaken remarkable challenges.

The nominated individual just needs to have competed in the regatta in recent years.

A diverse cross-section of women have won the trophy. They include the inaugural winner, the late Betty Moore who was awarded it in 2006, at the age of 88, having sailed at Cowes Week every year since 1947. Other winners were Gavia WilkinsonCox for her sailing achievements in the Dragon class and her work in raising funds for the sailors of the British Olympic and Paralympic Teams since the 1990s and Kerry Gruson one of the first disabled woman helms to compete at Cowes Week – who was recognised for her work teaching sailing and advancing accessible sailing for people with disabilities.

Join in the sailing Where to watch

VISITORS to Cowes Week can join in with the on-water action thanks to leading maritime training provider UKSA, the charity which changes lives through on the water activity.

Complete novices can join in the thrills of sailing by taking advantage of the expertise of UKSA’s highly qualified instructors, with 19 onehour sessions running every day for £5 per person. Visitors who may have never sailed before will have the chance to get out on the water in a Colgate 26 Keelboat with a qualified RYA Instructor and try sailing. Anyone wishing to take part in one of UKSA’s Try Sailing sessions, simply needs to visit the UKSA at the Cowes Week Regatta Centre.

Laser Performance and Pelican Racing have teamed up to offer the chance to ‘Come Racing’ after the 1,000 boat fleet has finished for the day. For £10, members of the

public can try their hand at racing onboard a Laser SB3 and have the chance to race against nine other Laser SB3’s. Come Racing is available between Saturday, 31 July and Thursday, 5 August.

Hour long spectator boat trips are available at 10.30am, 12pm and 1.30pm, leaving from Trinity Landing on Cowes Parade. The prices are £10 per adult and £8 for children aged 16 and under.

Bookings are possible online in advance at www.cowesweek. co.uk. Visitors will also be able to book onsite at the entrance to Trinity Landing Ride on a high speed Rigid Inflatable Powerboat. OFFSHORE sailing is always a challenge for spectators as most of the action is around the buoys out at sea. But a great place to watch the action from shoreside is on the Green in front of the Esplanade.

Take your binoculars for the best close-up views.

The start of sailing regattas are always fun as the boats joust for position and aim to cross the line just as the gun goes. It is a tense time for skippers as boats have to turn and twist to hold their line and vie for the most favoured spot. But you can watch the start of the races, usually from around 10.30am from between the castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons. You might want to wear earplugs. Thursday, 5 August, Teamorigin, the British America’s Cup sailing team and America’s Cup holders, BMW Oracle Racing, will race clockwise around the Island, starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron at 9.50am, over the historic original course that saw the birth of the America’s Cup in 1851.

Visitors to Cowes Week can watch the fleets finishing along the Green in the afternoon, depending on wind and tide.

The Extreme Sailing Series will be short-course racing close to shore just off Egypt Point. For the first three days, Saturday/ Sunday/ Monday, the racing will take place from 3pm and for the final three onTuesday/ Wednesday/ Thursday, it will begin from 4pm with racing from 5pm.

helmed by qualified UKSA skippers and crewed by 12 novice sailors from mixed backgrounds of disability or disadvantage, will compete for the inaugural Artemis Even Keel Challenge Trophy on the afternoon of Sunday, 1 August followed by the final race on Monday, 2 August.

The race winners from Day One will be joined by some leading names in sailing for what is set to be a highly competitive Pro-Am final on Monday. Each of the celebrity sailors will guest helm on that final race. Racing will take place off Princes Green at approx 5.30pm.

THERE are regular ferry services from Southampton and Lymington direct to Cowes. It is better to leave your car on the mainland as parking in Cowes is limited but there is a car ferry as well as high-speed passenger service by catamaran from Southampton. See the Red Funnel website for details of times. Booking in advance is not normally necessary unless you plan to take your car.

Ferry services to other ports on the Isle of Wight, including Portsmouth to Fishbourne, Lymington to Yarmouth, and Portsmouth to Ryde, are all operated by Whitelink Isle of Wight Ferries.

A helicopter service also operates between Gosport and Cowes during Cowes Week.

Weather forecast THE early general outlook looks like mainly dry and sunny conditions, with lightish winds and probable sea breezes, in the first half of the week and threats of the occasional thunderstorm towards the end of the week.

NEWS IN BRIEF Man overboard NORTH East RNLI volunteers from Blyth were called out just after 9.30pm on 20 July after a person was reported to be in the River Blyth. The inshore lifeboat crew discovered that a man had fallen into the water from his tender, which had capsized.

Nearby was a motorboat with two fellow crew members stranded on board, waiting to go ashore. The lifeboat crew rescued the person from the water and took him ashore, then pulled the drifting tender ashore to make sure that it would not be a navigational hazard. They then returned to the motorboat and took the two stranded people ashore.

RNLI crews are no stick-in-the-muds IT was a busy Saturday for Southendon-Sea RNLI volunteers on 24 July, with a cruiser crew and a distraught mother among those grateful for their help.

The crew of the town’s RNLI rescue hovercraft were on exercise when they were called to a 13-foot cabin cruiser that had run aground with two people on board.

Due to the ebbing tide, the vessel was left at anchor and its occupants were ferried safely back to shore.

The hovercraft crew returned to their exercise – but they would be needed again before the day was out.

In the afternoon, while exercising near Mulberry Harbour, the crew advised people to return to shore who were at risk of being cut off by the flooding tide.

And then, at around 6pm, Thames Coastguard asked the hovercraft crew to find a missing boy who had walked out on to the mud.

The child was found safe and well and ferried back to the Halfway House Slipway at Thorpe Bay.

Injured in collision POOLE lifeboat volunteers launched on Sunday 25 July after a personal watercraft collided with a speedboat at the entrance to the harbour. When the lifeboat crew arrived they found that both vessels had drifted on to Hook sands. The man on the PW had a serious gash on his head and the lifeboat crew helped to airlift him to a helicopter. They then escorted the speedboat back to Parkstone Bay Marina.

He was reunited with his distraught mother, who then had to be treated with oxygen by hovercraft crew and Southend Coastguard Officers. An ambulance was called and she was taken to hospital, while the hovercraft returned to station.
