A LONE water warrior ducks the smoke to start the 2010 Rolex Middle Sea Race. The cannons of the Saluting Battery at Malta’s Fort St. Angelo officially saw off the first of the 76 competitors into the calm azure Mediterranean. Six days and much furious racing later, the last of the 60 boats returned to Fort St Angelo. With only 16 retirees, it was one the most successful races in recent years with the appropriately named Lucky from the USA claiming overall IRC victory. www.regattanews.com
Go ahead for marinas TWO major boating developments have been approved by planners on the Isle of Wight. Cowes expansion includes a new breakwater on the east bank of the Medina, which will shelter a new 300-berth marina. Additional facilities include a
permanent marina car park, a 60-bed hotel, 12 town houses and 324 square metres of commercial floor space. A second navigational channel will also be dredged, known as the Eastern channel, and will provide additional access for leisure craft. Sutton Harbour Holdings has been
chosen by the South East England Development Agency as the preferred developer and operator for the new Outer Harbour development. Captain Stuart McIntosh, the Chief Executive of Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) and Cowes Harbour Master, said “This decision
and planning consent is great news and a major step towards delivering the Outer Harbour Plan that will finally make Cowes a truly sheltered harbour, improving safety. It is also significant step towards securing the long term prosperity of TURN TO PAGE 3

A taste of summer sun AS the glorious reds and golds of autumn change into the dank dark afternoons of November take another peak at our front page. If you are one of those who tends to think life is like a half empty glass you might gloomily dismiss the sparkling view from Malta’s Fort St Angelo at the start of the Middle Sea race late last month. “How the other half lives . . .” you might be forgiven for thinking enviously. If, on the other hand, you prefer to see life as half-full, with plenty more to come, you will be excited by the scene and rub your hands with the gleeful thought that in four or five months you will be back out on the water again. Or you could simply shrug, opt to wrap up in 21st century foulies and keep sailing through the winter . . .

It’s certainly worth a look with some special bits of coast on offer just a short sail away and prime seats for the Olympics.
Olympic legacy
Channel sense
And there are other reasons for a tad of optimism this month. Read about the success of Portland harbour. Since the Royal Navy lifeline was cut after 150 years it has become the venue for 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing and now we learn it is enjoying something of a mini boom. It has become a cruise ship Mecca with water borne visitors spending an average of 57 Euros each according to Dorset business organisations. And it is not only Portland that is benefiting. The other half of the Olympic venue is to enjoy the fruits of 2012 heritage. The first to gain will be those looking for a different place to berth as the harbour is upgraded and fees are reduced.
Thank goodness the BBC got it wrong for once. Contrary to a report, we are reassured that Channel swims are not being stopped. It appeared to be another piece of ‘elf and safety over reaction but we can lower the hackles. As Mike Clarke of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency helpfully suggests, there is nothing against properly supervised cross Channel swims, it is only unorthodox stunts that need to be policed and in some cases banned. Why should they put rescue services to unnecessary expense or, worse still, needlessly endanger lives? So we can all relax and perhaps BBC’s Top Gear will get back to some serious coverage of motoring issues rather than ego-tripping stunts.
Mini boom for Portland 2010 has been a year of firsts for Portland Harbour with cruise visitors helping to create a mini-economic boom for Dorset businesses, Over the summer European and US passengers spent an average of 57 Euros per head in and around Weymouth, according to the Weymouth Harbour Traders’ Association. The season ended with two major cruise ships berthing simultaneously. Fred Olsens’ Cruise Liner, the Boudicca and Peter Deilmann’s MS Deutschland made day visits, bringing 1,359 cruise passengers to the region’s popular tourist amenities. This follows first time calls by US operators Crystal Cruises and Oceania Cruises, German travel group Phoenix Reisen, and new U.K. cruise line Cruise and Maritime Voyages.
Royal Clarence Marina Portsmouth Harbour
The season has also seen the call of the largest cruise ship to visit Portland Port, Holland America Line’s Westerdam. Previously a naval dockyard for more than 150 years, Portland Harbour is now a thriving and
successful commercial facility. It maintains a close relationship with the past through its contract to support the RFA, as well as being home to the activities of Global Marine and Portland Bunkers International.

the harbour and the local economy.” Work is due to start in spring 2011 with completion of the breakwater and the first phase of the marina by spring 2012. Planners have also approved controversial changes at Yarmouth harbour in West Wight. The plans met with anger from locals and members of the boating
fraternity who are worried that the new layout will “sterilise” the harbour, removing its character. There are also concerns over the moving of the fuel berth and dinghy pontoon. In late August, a flotilla of 50 vessels descended on the harbour in protest. The harbour authorities argued that the development was needed to help cover costs of maintaining the
port and for long term investment to deal with rising water levels caused by climate change. In a public document issued in November 2009, the harbour commissioners said “We are trying to ensure a growing supply of visitors for the town and to make it easier for visitors to come ashore and to improve navigation in the harbour.”
EX-NAV Y minesweeper HMS Sidlesham has retired after 25 years service as Chichester Sailing Centre charity base. HMS Sidlesham, or the Gerald Daniel as she was known, was built in 1955 and has been at Cobnor in Chichester Harbour for 37 years. She moved there in 1973 as an accommodation ship for West Sussex Police Cadets. The charity Christian Youth Enterprises Sailing Centre took over the ship in 1985, establishing a premier sailing and activity centre used by schools, youth groups and individuals aged 8 years upwards. She was removed from her berth last month in readiness for a new life on the River Thames. More than £900,000 has been raised towards £1.1m required for a replacement barge. www.cyesc.blogspot.com

Gipsy Moth IV saved for UK ANONYMOUS buyers have paid £250,000 to keep Gipsy Moth IV, in the UK to provide opportunities for young people to sail. It means the famous yacht, in which Sir Francis Chichester made his famed solo round the world trip in 1966, will continue to be available to the UK public. The 53-foot ketch will remain at the UKSA’s headquarters in Cowes where it has been since the association bought it in 2004. Following restoration, the boat was used for a second circumnavigation

Jon Ely, Chief Executive at UKSA, said: “The restoration and roundthe-world voyage changed the lives of many disadvantaged youngsters. “This philanthropic purchase will ensure that the historic craft remains in UK waters in a good seaworthy condition. “We are delighted that the yacht will remain based in Cowes and look forward to working with her new owners to ensure that she is preserved as a piece of the nation’s marine heritage.” Although the new owners opted to remain anonymous they said: “We are both of an age that we remember Sir Francis returning to Plymouth and it’s lovely to be able to safeguard her future, as well as keeping her sailing. “We’re looking forward to working closely with UKSA and the steering committee that is being set up to make sure that she is seen by as many people as possible at high profile events and to raise awareness of the fantastic work that UKSA does with disabled and disadvantaged young people.” www.uksa.org

Creek gets its own tide tables A TINY Devon creek now has its own official tide tables – the first created for a secondary port by the Hydrographic Office since 2006. Stoke Gabriel Creek, six miles up the winding River Dart, now ranks alongside the country’s biggest commercial ports by having its own tide-tables after numerous visiting boats have gone aground in the drying mud and been stuck for six hours.
www.suzuki-marine.co.uk
Neil Millward, commodore of Stoke Gabriel Boating Association, said: “We have had to use Dartmouth tide tables but our tides are very variable and there can be differences of up to 30 minutes.” Chris Jones of the Hydrographic Office said: “It is unusual to receive data from such a small stretch of water but we want sailors to be safe in whatever they are doing.”

Pridding said afterwards: “I highlighted to the Prime Minister that the boat building industry was a manufacturing success story where some of our leading boat builders export 90 per cent of what they produce. “I was keen for the Prime Minister to recognise this success as well as the size of the marine sector which contributes approximately £3.16 billion to the UK economy. “Although the Prime Minister’s

RAYMARINE is supporting Olly Rofix, a young leukaemia survivor, in his bid to sail single-handed around Britain in his Valiant 18 Jolly Olly. He will be raising money and awareness for the Anthony Nolan Trust that supports leukaemia sufferers and their families. Olly was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in September 2005, when he was 20. His illness was later rediagnosed as a very rare form of leukaemia – only ever recorded in three people. After four years of treatment and a bone marrow transplant, Olly is the only person to successfully survive the rare life-threatening disease and has now been given the all-clear. Raymarine, the Portsmouth based manufacturer has joined other marine industry companies to provide him with the vital electronics and safety equipment. Navionics has also supported the expedition by providing electronic charts. Due to set off on his challenge in May 2011, and with the journey taking him 15-17 weeks to complete, Olly says one of the main aims is to raise awareness and get more than 1,000 people to register as donors. He also needs to raise nearly £35,000 before he can start. www.olivers-travels.co.uk

Triumphant return for replica ship PHOENICIA, the replica 600BC wooden ship arrived triumphantly back in Syria having completed a 20,000 mile circumnavigation of Africa. The journey was intended to recreate the first circumnavigation of Africa, thought to have been achieved by Phoenician mariners around 2,600 years ago. The expedition took more than two years to complete, and was approved by the Royal Geographical Society and supported by Raymarine as an equipment sponsor. Phoenicia was built using traditional Phoenician construction methods and materials, and designed using evidence from shipwrecks and archaeological finds. Advice from scholars ensured she was authentic but on the inside she was equipped with the latest high tech electronic navigational equipment from Raymarine.
The journey was completed in two stages. The first saw Phoenicia depart from Syria in summer 2008 and sail east as far as Yemen. After a short break, she completed her circumnavigation past Oman and Mozambique, around the Cape of Good Hope, out to the Azores and through the Straits of Gibraltar via Tunisia, Malta and Lebanon to her final port of Arwad, where she arrived to a crowd of over 2,000 well wishers last month. During the epic voyage she faced severe conditions including sevenmetre waves and gale force winds. Having accurate navigational data also ensured Phoenicia could make the necessary detours to avoid dangerous areas prone to pirate attacks. Phoenicia was fitted out with a Raymarine C80 multifunction display, GPS antenna, Automatic Identification System receiver,

NEWS IN BRIEF Liferaft rescue NINETY-EIGHT crew were rescued from liferafts by a container ship after they abandoned a fish factory ship on fire in the Atlantic. Five ships and aircraft responded to the mayday call sent out by the Athena while 13 crew continued to fight the fire before returning to Falmouth.
Sailing shortlist VOTING has closed for the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards. The winners, one male and one female, will be announced at an awards presentation and dinner, on 9 November in Athens, Greece. Ed Wright, from Britain, the Finn world champion and double world cup winner is among the seven men and five women who have been nominated.
Speeder fined FINE and costs totalling almost £600 were imposed on Kenneth Goodred after he admitted speeding on a personal watercraft at between 18 and 30 knots on the River Hamble in June. More than 3,200 boats are moored on the Hamble and the speed limit is to ensure the safety of all river users, said Keith Evans, chairman on the river’s harbour board.
Channel swims NOT under threat
Dr Julie Bradshaw
. . . except bathtubs, skateboards and Top Gear UK coastguards have confirmed that there is no threat to swimming across the English Channel, despite a BBC report. The news item may have spread concerns over possible restrictions but Dr Julie Bradshaw, secretary of the Channel Swimming Association, said it was a “misunderstanding or miscommunication”. “It is the unorthodox and unauthorised crossings that may be stopped,” she said.
Currently, swimmers are not allowed to swim from France to the UK following restrictions put into place by the French Coastguard. Swimmers are allowed to cross from the UK as long as they have registered with one of the two Channel swimming associations, the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation or the Channel Swimming Association. Dr Bradshaw first swam the channel when she was 15 in 1979
– and still holds the record for crossing the channel using Butterfly stroke, which she set in 2002 with a time of 14 hours and 18 minutes. Among recent swimmers to successfully complete a Channel crossing, is Frenchman Philippe Croizon – a man who following an accident earlier in his life, had to have both his arms and legs amputated. Using prosthetic legs for the swim, Croizon set off from Folkestone in
Kent at 06:45 BST and made landfall at 20:13 BST. Mike Clarke of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “Swimming the English Channel in organised form is absolutely fine and adds to the gallantry of the Nation. “What we have a problem with is the unorthodox crossings – bathtubs, skateboards and Top Gear.” www.channelswimmingassociation.com www.channelswimming.net
Schooner set to leave Training vessel crippled THE UK’s last surviving threemasted wooden trading schooner could soon set sail from the West Country for the final time. The 200-ton Kathleen & May, built in 1900, has been based in Bideford, Devon, since her £1

million rebuild in 1999 by her owner, plant-hire boss Steve Clarke. But she has now been closed to the public. Torridge District Council has plans for a regeneration scheme at Brunswick Wharf.
FORTY seven people, including 36 young teenagers, had to be rescued from the tall ship Fryderyk Chopin after the traditional training ship tall ship lost both its masts in a severe gale. The Polish registered boat was in Cornish waters, 99 miles from the South West of the Isles of Scilly when it became a victim of the storm. Falmouth Coastguard received a call for immediate assistance from the master of the vessel, which was in danger of losing its second mast. The ship was taken to the River Fal and the crew were looked after by the Polish embassy.

Trophy celebrates joint anniversary 1860 was a memorable year for the Royal Navy marking the launch of HMS Warrior and the founding of the Sea Cadets. To celebrate their joint 150th birthday, HMS Warrior sponsored a trophy for Junior Sea Cadets aged ten to 12 in the surrounding district from Bognor Regis to Cowes. The juniors enjoyed a number of competitions including five-a-side football, shooting and swimming. The Warrior trophy was presented to the winning unit from Gosport by the Captain of HMS Warrior, Ken Jones. The Cadet Corps was formed to help bolster the country’s defence numbers following heavy losses in the Crimean War. Cadet150 provides an opportunity for young people to find out more about the four groups making up the Cadet Forces: the Combined Cadet Force which is run through schools, the Sea Cadet Corps, the Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps.

More than 130,000 current cadets are taking part in events across the country and overseas. The 25,000 Adult Volunteers will also be
recognised through Cadet150. December 29 marks HMS Warrior’s launching at Blackwall, London, and she was first commissioned on
August 1, 2011. Warrior was the first ship to combine an iron hull, steam propulsion and armour plating, At her launching she was the largest and most powerful warship in the world and her revolutionary design marked the start of a new era in naval architecture and maritime strategy. In August 1979, Warrior was rescued from serving as an oil fuel hulk on the Cleddau River and towed to Hartlepool to undergo the most complex and successful ship restoration ever undertaken. Restored to her former glory, Warrior returned to her home port of Portsmouth on 16 June 1987, where she remains afloat as a permanent attraction at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, which attracts almost 500,000 visitors each year. Warrior provides a superb Victorian maritime setting for private and corporate entertainment and is a popular wedding venue.
More red faces over stranded sub RED faces turned to crimson when it was revealed that the stranded submarine, HMS Astute, suffered further damage at the hands of a rescue tug. Described as the world’s most
advanced submarine, the £1 billion underwater vessel is designed to be able to sneak up on enemy ships thanks to its acoustic panels masking its radar signature. Despite its state of the art
instruments, it was unable to avoid running aground on a shingle bank near Skye during sea trials. The sub appeared to have suffered relatively little damage. That was until the tug which
went to the rescue collided with the submarine. The impact is believed to have torn off Astute’s starboard foreplane, one of her navigation fins. The incident is still under investigation.

Crew rescued from Bullimore cat SEVEN crew members had to be airlifted from the Spirit of Antigua, Tony Bullimore’s 33-metre racing catamaran. The crew was delivering the multihull from Lisbon to Bristol when the incident occurred in the Bay of Biscay, 135 miles south west Brest. Conditions at the time were reported to be good visibility and
slight seas with 11-knot winds but the vessel was suddenly betrayed by a sudden gust of wind. Skipper Ben Jones said: “We accelerated from 15 to 30 knots and we were not able to slow her down.” Falmouth Coastguard received the Antigua’s automated distress call. Falmouth contacted the French rescue authorities who dispatched a
rescue helicopter. HMS Ocean was also in the area on manoeuvres and was called to investigate. All seven crew members were successfully winched form the upturned hull and were expected to continue their passage to the UK by ferry. Tony Bullimore, now aged 71 was
not on board but was having the £500,000 catamaran delivered so he could make an attempt at the Round Antarctica sailboat record. He has a famous record of rescues including one in 1997 by the Royal Australian Navy after surviving five days trapped 500 miles off Antarctica in his capsized yacht during a solo round the world race.
Plan for worldwide offshore rating system
THE Royal Ocean Racing Club and Union Nationale pour La Course au Large, joint owners of the IRC rating rule, have been discussing the possibility of creating a unified organisation to
govern yacht ratings worldwide. The plan is for RORC/ UNCL and the Offshore Racing Congress to evolve new rating systems that combine the benefits of IRC and ORC to create fast, fun
and seaworthy boats for unified competition all over the world. Chris Little, Admiral of the RORC said: “We have received strong support from a number of countries and potential owners
to develop a rule that will allow us to recreate the international yacht racing circuit and we shall continue to work towards this goal.” www.rorc.org.uk

Acoustic foam with a reinforced foil facing on one side and a damping sheet on the other. The heavy damping sheet, unlike the sheet on competitor products, sticks directly to the metal. The foam absorbs the airborne noise and the barrier reduces the noise vibrations in the metal itself.
Not only is noise reduced on deck and in the cabins, dockside observers often comment on how quiet the boat is once fitted with these blankets. The blankets are manufactured using a sheet of lead sandwiched inside two layers of class “O” open cell acoustic foam and covered with Fortaglas. Fortaglas is a durable, wipe clean, high heat resistance fabric. The lead layer acts as a block to the sound, especially low frequency diesel noise. The foam absorbs airborne sounds. The blankets are provided with Velcro closed flaps to all the main service points for easy, daily access. The whole blanket can be removed in seconds for more major work. ■

KIT THE HANDY WETSUIT COLD, wet hands are a huge pain when you’re trying to tweak a tiny trim switch or prod a bouncing button, and that’s exactly why gloves are a huge friend to the powerboater. These winter versions from Gill use 2mm neoprene for insulation, with a PU hexagonal print for grip and durability. The seams also have a glued and blind-stitched construction, which means that, like a high-class wetsuit, the absence of stitching through the fabric should provide a more watertight seal and improve longterm comfort. The Aquafit cuff design also uses high-stretch material to create a soft and watertight seal around the wrist. It’s top kit. Price: £30 01159 460844 www.gillmarine.com
GILL COAST SUIT
SNAP STICK
GILL’S new Coast Suit is made using the company’s tried and tested Gill 2 dot fabric, which has shown itself to be waterproof, breathable and very durable. The extensive features list includes a high collar with a fleecelined faceguard to protect you when the weather deteriorates. You also get large cargo pockets with plenty of space, fleece-lined handwarmer pockets, adjustable cuffs with PU inner seals, a double storm guard over the zip to prevent water ingress, reflective panels on the chest and at the wrists for emergency recognition, and a high-visibility hood with reflective panel. The Coast Trousers feature the same high durability material, with added protection on the knee and seat. They come in two colours, red or grey, and every shape you could want for men, women and children. Price: £100 (jacket); £85 (trousers) • 01159 460844 www.gillmarine.com
OFTEN, when preparing a boat for its long winter nap, owners overlook minor, but critical details, such as exposed zippers and snaps. They can easily stick and rip the surrounding canvas and plastic when exposed to the corroding effects of rain, salt and grime. But a quick dab of Snap Stick lubricant from Shurhold Industries can end problem fasteners and hinges, making things much easier come the spring. Unlike gels, liquids or sprays, Snap Stick is applied directly to the head of a snap, along a zipper or on the barrel of a hinge, without causing a mess. One easy application lasts up to three months. It is non-toxic and biodegradable and it won’t harm fabrics, plastics or metals.
GREEN AND DRY WITH MEACO MEACO, the UK dehumidifier specialists, have launched a new dehumidifier for the winter. Called the Meaco DD8L, it uses the same environmentally friendly desiccant technology as the award-winning DD122FW dehumidifier. That means it will protect your boat from the damage that mould and condensation can cause over the winter, without the need for any refrigerant coolant. In fact, it can be connected to the hose (which comes supplied) and left to dehumidify for months on end if required. The water drains straight into the sink, and if there is a power cut, it will turn itself back on and start working again when the power is restored. It even has a humidistat to prevent excessive drying and to help conserve your energy supplies. Price: £179.99 • 0500 418458 • www.meaco.com

BEAUTIFUL BOMBER THE fact that you like boats doesn’t mean that you have to embrace the traditional yachtsman look. You could instead opt for something like the new Bomber Hat from Helly Hansen, which hides its resounding practicality for recreational boaters in something approaching fashion. Available for men and women, the new Bomber features a funky check design, snug faux fur trim and ear flaps. BARMY BARRACUDA IS it a sports boat? Is it a personal watercraft? Is it an accessory? Nobody seems quite sure, but what we do know is that this boat created a lot of interest at the Southampton Boat Show. It’s the 3.4-metre Barracuda from Yellowfin Marine and it is designed to provide a huge amount of fun on engines as small as 20hp – which makes it particularly ideal for places where the use of regular PWs is prohibited. The price includes a power tilt 20hp Tohatsu and an aluminium trailer. It will take up to 40hp and it is light enough to be towed by the smallest of family hatchbacks. HOW useful is this? The startmonkey200 can restart a standard 12-volt car battery between 15 and 20 times on a full charge, thanks to its ‘High Energy Dynamic Polymer Battery’ and it also comes with some high-tech safety features to help give you peace of mind. Simple and quick to use, the startmonkey200 attaches to your car battery via the crocodile clips and in eight seconds, it is ready to give you a jumpstart. Its compact design means it can be left in your glove compartment or boot until it is needed and (thanks to its low static waste) the startmonkey200 will still retain 75 per cent of its charge – even after a year without use. It can be recharged using the supplied in-car charger or via Powertraveller’s powergorilla and solargorilla portable chargers. The startmonkey200 can also be used with all your in-car 12v devices such as Sat Navs (via the DC outlet and the supplied cigarette lighter socket). This is also compatible with the Powertraveller motormonkey unit (available separately) providing you with power for pretty much every digital device you can imagine. Unusually, for such items however, you also get an additional strap for extra sealing power and a long, fully adjustable shoulder strap for easy carriage. It is large enough to accommodate your EPIRB and PLB, flares, first aid kit, fresh water, survival blanket and torch, so if you don’t already have one, this makes an enormous amount of sense. It’s excellent value too. Price: £16.56 02392 623900 www.mcmurdo.co.uk

Powerful secret Geoff Holt The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.
AAS1011 Trident
THIS may come as a surprise to many, but Geoff Holt the “disabled yachtsman” has a liking for speed. I’m not talking amphetamine, although my addiction offers a similar natural high, albeit a more expensive one. I’m talking power boats, in particular, powered fishing boats. I’ve owned a few in my time and have become a bit of a nerd in the range of powerboats which can take wheelchairs; from the ghastly flatbottomed aluminium “Wheelyboats” designed for a Beaufort scale of zero and an ever lower credibility rating, through to the magnificent Cheetah catamarans with side access for a wheelchair capable of handling most sea-states but you won’t see much change from £100,000. I started tearing up £50 notes and leaving big black carbon tyre marks around the Solent about ten years ago. I opted for a bright orange – look at me I’m disabled – Pioner
Multi, and yes, it has only one “e”. I named her “Jaffa” and together we caught a fair few fish at my secret marks around the Solent, mainly bass. The Pioner Multi is made from injected-moulded polyethylene, robust enough to drag across concrete should you wish so to do, but its most-notable feature is its landing-craft style drop-bow. Interestingly, despite buying it for this feature, I never once used it, preferring to wheel into the boat backwards off a pontoon, a procedure which caused most onlookers, myself included, to shut their eyes before undertaking. Fitted with a 20HP outboard it planed, just about, at 12 knots max, on flat water so long as there were only two of you in the boat and one of you was hanging over the bow. But that was its Achilles heal. When you go fishing for cod south of the Isle of Wight in winter, you rarely get flat water. In fact anywhere I went to sea in Jaffa was turbulent enough to ensure I kept one hand on the EPIRB button, and the other on the inflate toggle on my life-jacket, just in case. It is however ideal as a rescue boat on flat-water lakes and reservoirs and remains the safety boat of choice for many Sailability groups around the UK.
My next purchase was almost the perfect choice. A NAB 23 dory powered by a four-stroke 90HP Suzuki, “Liberty” was a fully MCA coded ex-commercial powerboat. With speeds up to 26 knots, we had a lot of fun together and burned countless litres of irreplaceable fossil fuels, thereby doing our bit to deplete the earth’s natural resources. If I had a £1 for every time I returned home empty handed from a fishing trip to be greeted by my wife who would say, predictably: “It would have been cheaper and easier to go to the fishmongers . . .” They just don’t understand do they?. But for me, Liberty failed on two counts, especially when needing to get out to those mid-Channel wrecks. With a double-cathedral hull, she doesn’t like powering at speed through waves, well, not without slamming so much your head hurts and sounding like she’s going to snap in half. And secondly, the lack of protection from the elements, not least the spray kicked up into your face when travelling with the sticks pushed right forward. The one huge advantage of this class is that Liberty has two sisters, both designed and operated by Port Solent based powerboat school Boatability. Believed to be the only commercially operated
Pioner Multi
wheelchair accessible powerboats in the country, qualified wheelchair users can not only charter the boats for their own pleasure, but also take their RYA level 2 powerboat training in the boat whilst remaining seated in their wheelchair. Coded for up to eight people (max 4 wheelchairs), I’d highly recommend anyone to give them a go. So what’s the next boat for me? Well, Liberty has now gone, she has a new life providing pleasure to a wheelchair user on the Isle of Man. My options are fairly limited, if not by choice then certainly by cost. With a well-proven hull shape, ideal for choppy seas, Orkney boats will adapt one of their 21-footers with a side-access modification for about £30,000, and the Powercat 6.9 made by Multimarine has also started to take orders for a similar modification and a similar price.
From my research, I think it has to be a catamaran for me, purely from a stability point of view. It must also have full weather protection and ideally a cabin with an accessible bunk and galley, I’m hoping that concession may win the approval of my wife. Of course, I’m talking myself into a Cheetah catamaran but I always did have champagne tastes with lemonade pockets. www.boatability.co.uk www.cheetahmarine.co.uk www.multimarine.co.uk

New man at the helm of training ACCORDING to his mum, Richard Falk’s love of the ocean stemmed from being introduced to the surf at just two weeks old. Richard himself isn’t so sure of the finer details of this tale but the one element he doesn’t quibble over is his love of the ocean. The ocean is Richard Falk’s life and now the affable Aussie is channelling that passion into his new role as RYA Training Manager. It’s been a crazy year for the 43-yearold Sydneysider who arrived at the RYA as Chief Cruising Instructor in February and within nine months found himself succeeding the retiring “It’s not about improving RYA James Stevens in the RYA Training Training,” he explains, “It’s working hot seat. now and working very well, but we Having spent the previous five have to look at where we want to be in years, in conjunction with his three, five and ten years’ time and ask business partner, running global sail will the programme still do what we training and yacht racing operations need it to do then? and working as a freelance skipper, “Those plans need to be put into examiner and consultant, not to place now and unfortunately James mention skippering the Singapore didn’t leave his crystal ball behind! entry in the 2005-06 Clipper “RYA Training is now a massive Ventures Round the World Race, global brand; we have around 23,500 Richard isn’t a man who seems to get instructors in 44 countries around fazed by a challenge. the world. something new so we can’t have a knee jerk reaction to anything.” It’s this extensive global network of instructors and schools that enables the RYA’s Training team to stay on top of all the latest trends in how and what people want to learn. One of the biggest shifts in recent years, driven by a change in people’s working patterns and lifestyles, is a need to provide alternatives to the traditional classroom delivered training. This has culminated in the development of the RYA’s first fullyinteractive eLearning theory course – Essential Navigation and Seamanship – which is scheduled for launch in January 2011. An entry level two-day course, it aims to give newcomers their first taste of what they will need to know and what skills they will need to develop should they wish to get more involved in the sport. The cutting edge delivery, which has been developed with hugelyexperienced Yachtmaster Instructor Trainers and online educational experts, is delivered through a rich, innovative media mix of videos, audio and animations, meeting the needs of people who may not otherwise have the time to undertake this type of training course. Although he believes eLearning
... a safe haven in North West England nd on l a onto ble a nu p ila An term ava s t or r th sh be
will play an increasingly significant role in the RYA’s Training delivery, Richard insists it will not come at the cost of traditional classroom courses and training schools. “eLearning is another means of delivering the courses we run and the key reason we’ve chosen this Essential Navigation and Seamanship course to be our first to have the eLearning option is that it is an entry level twoday course, not one of the detailed five-day courses which form the backbone of RYA theory training. “It’s giving people who can’t attend a two-day classroom course or who don’t have any courses running near them, the chance to do something they would like to do. The classroom is always going to be important and this course will be sold and delivered by the training centres themselves so they don’t lose out financially.” Over the next six months the team will also be undertaking a review of the existing practical and theory courses to see whether there are any gaps in the areas currently catered for. “It may be that no gaps exist,” Richard says, “But there may be a style of boat that’s becoming more popular we’re not catering for or we find there is scope to offer more specialist courses as additions to our five-day courses enabling
people to become more skilled in specialised areas.” For someone who has tackled the Southern Ocean, completed the Sydney to Hobart and is now married to professional yachtswoman Emma Pontin, Richard didn’t actually discover sailing until his mid-20s, despite being into pretty much every water-based activity imaginable from the age of five. However once he turned his passing interest into his passion – there was simply no time left for his 60-hour a week high-powered corporate job in retail. Something had to give and there was only going to be one winner. Now happily settled with Emma in Hamble, Richard admits his favourite cruising waters are still the whole of Australia’s East Coast despite estimating having sailed from Sydney to the stunning Whitsunday Islands some 40-odd times. But there will be little time for play in the coming months as Richard keeps his focus firmly trained on maintaining the RYA’s status as the global training leader. www.rya.org.uk

Practice is key to MOB By Sticky Stapylton
WE held our first man overboard weekend for sailing/yacht clubs and marinas last month in Lymington. Adam Wilson of Aquasafe Powerboats had been asked by Newbury Yacht Club to demonstrate various methods of recovering a crew member from the sea, and Adam asked me to help out. We emailed all skippers involved, there were 38 people or so and nine boats and we asked them all to think about how to secure the crew in the water (CIW) alongside and then how to effect a recovery. We deliberately did not ask for details of how skippers planned to get back to the casualty but this naturally created quite a bit of discussion by email. Our remit was to deal with recovery only, a subject I maintain is a lot more difficult than getting back to the CIW. However it was quite clear that a number of skippers thought that the getting back was a problem and I think that this may be because they do not practise it enough. On all the deliveries where I am skipper I brief and practise all crew in this and in particular they must
be able to heave-to effectively before we set off over the horizon. Our programme was: Talk and discussion on how to get back to the CIW. Talk and discussion of how to recover a CIW. A demonstration by each skipper of his chosen method of recovery. This was done with boats alongside a pontoon and spectators either on neighbouring boats or
on a spectator boat. Then out into the Solent where each boat used a RNLI “Dead Fred” dummy or a crew member went overboard in a dry or wet suit. For the last part we had very benign conditions with wind at f3 or 4, very few waves and no swell. A number of skippers used slings or inflatable lifebuoys towed behind their yachts, and the major lesson learnt was that you must practise getting the line to the CIW. One boat motored four times round the CIW before the line was within his reach. Ingenuity played its part and what was refreshing to see were the various methods of recovery used. Some used gadgets they had devised themselves whilst others used recovery equipment you can buy at the chandlers. Providing you get back to your CIW quickly and the person is not unconscious things will be a lot easier. Bear in mind that your casualty should ideally be hauled out horizontally to avoid blood going from the head to the toes. I am running weekends such as this throughout the year operating anti-clockwise from Liverpool round to the Wash. If a marina or a club would like such an event, please make contact. www.sail-help.co.uk
A few ideas: ■ A ladder which can be deployed anywhere on the boat. Nobody used the transom ladders or sugar scoops, principally because of the danger of the hull or ladder coming down on the CIW’s head in a heavy sea.
■ The liferaft. Dependent on size, it could still be difficult to recover a hypothermic casualty wearing with a fully inflated life jacket. ■ Tribuckle. No longer available but the system has been copied. There can be problems in a heavy sea if the material is not weighted to get below a CIW. These systems are a possible method of getting an unconscious CIW out of the water. ■ Inflatable sling or strop. A simple device which needs plenty of practice so that you get the line or the strop close to the CIW.
■ The dinghy. The disadvantage of this is the time it will take to inflate. Some boats have their dinghies on davits on the stern or half inflated on the coach roof which will make for quicker deployment. With a LVM inflator on my last boat, I reckon I could get my dinghy out of its locker and inflated in about five minutes, maybe more quickly with a bit of adrenaline. It will not be necessary to inflate fully.
■ 6:1 tackle with karabiners and strops. Used very effectively by a young lady who remarked how easy it was to get her husband out of the water. This set up cost me £38 20 years or so ago and I take it with me every time I go to sea. ■ Two lifejacket strops and a halyard. Simple, cheap and effective. ■ Bowline on the bight. Just a warp attached to a halyard. ■ Headsail sheet and a gorilla on the winch!

Highs and lows of powerboat year Shelley Jory-Leigh British Powerboat Champion www.shelleyjory.com
NOW that Coniston Records Week has passed in the first week of November, Powerboat Racing in the UK is over for 2010. Teams endured the worst weather in years in the Lake District with only the Monday suitable for real speed runs. The most significant new record went to Julian Codling in his 0250 Hydro - hydroplane boat with a 250 cc engine. Julian thrashed Malcolm Goodman’s four-year-old 100mph record, recording 112 mph. Organisers also introduced a new Platinum Star badge for national or world records above 150mph and Ted Walsh missed the new honour by less than ½ mph. It’s been a full-on year and been a very difficult time for many including me. Six months ago I was faced with a new sponsor in Rotary Watches, a new team with a new Boat in Spirit of
Belgium but no series to race in. Through the dedication of many people the World Championship happened for the Evolution and Superstock competitors in the form of the Powerboat GPS World Championship. I would like to thank everyone for their support and to thank everyone involved in the Powerboat GPS World Championship for their hard work and dedication in making the series happen. Huge congratulations to my fellow racers and the winners: 2010 World Evolution Champions – Metamarine, Marco Pennesi, Giampaolo Montavoci and Stefano Bonanno. 2010 World Supersport Champions - Baia Attolini, Stefano Acanfora, Renato Guidi Vittorio Foglia Manzillo and Roy Capasso. In European competition Perry Field secured the Aquabike Pro Runabout Silver European Medal. Circuit Racing’s Julian Codling secured Bronze in the European F250 Championship for inshore powerboats in his first year of international competition and
Jordan Muckles took his total of medals to four with a Bronze Formula Future Continental Championship medal in Parallel Slalom for small junior training RIBs) – Not bad for a 14 year old! Fellow female powerboat racer Naomi Williams took the Thundercat European standard championship with driver Blight Julius in Ahmad Tea. The pair were one of five British teams to compete in the Europeans in Ireland against boats from Sweden and the host nation. England dominated the proceedings taking first, second and third in standard class. English duo, Sean Fisher and Grant Pittard also took first place in the blue print class. Look out for more on Naomi’s thundercat adventure in forthcoming editions. UK Competitors also secured seven World Championship titles through Mark Williams in the World Formula 4 Championship for 70hp catamaran powerboats and youngster Jordan Muckles from Team GBR’s Formula Future team in the Class 4 World

Superman Lee Stone won his fifth world title with this feat with a two minute routine which saw him perform the fabled ‘Superman Backflip’, a trick never before landed on the flat in competition. The Superman Backflip not only requires a full backflip to be performed, but that the rider also removes both their feet from the ski during the rotation.
Parallel Slalom, Manoeuvring and Overall World Championship Titles. The JSRA’s Lisa Barsby secured the 2010 IJSBA World Master Ski Stock Championship for jet ski racing while James Bushell Powered into the 2010 IJSBA Pro-Am Runabout Stock Championship to take the Gold Medal and Lee Stone dazzled the crowds somersaulting his way in to the record books as five times Freestyle World Champion securing the 2010 IJSBA Pro Freestyle title. At the IJSBA World Finals Team Great Britain also earned three silver medals in the form of World Amateur Freestyle silver medalist Jack Moule, World Amateur Runabout runner up Brad Rickaby and World Expert Runabout silver medalist Perry Field. Three World Bronze medals were also won. The first by Brian Block
in the Formula 4 competition, with Sophie Perrin winning the Bronze in the Novice Women Ski championship and James Bushell taking the Bronze in the Pro Runabout Open Class. Around 50 national titles have been secured with several championships not decided until the last races of the season. I cannot mention them all, but congratulations must go to the P1 Superstock 300 Champions for 300hp Cougar powerboats, Rupert Pugh & Daniel Whapples. Rupert has fought hard for this title for four years and finally he has got it!

Racing for change installed price was £9000. That, I thought was a figure that was modest for the payback but alas I had no budget for such equipment. Feeling somewhat dejected by the price I decided to wander on to the next stand but before I did, Angus had a proposal: ‘I’ll race you for one,’ he said. As Angus and I swapped business cards it soon became apparent that Angus was the CEO of Power Perfector. A few e-mails later, it transpired that the race was going to be in a class Loch Long One Design, 21 foot and location – Aldeburgh Yacht Club, Suffolk – chosen by Angus. With such a prize on offer I thought that maybe I would ask Angus if I would be able to nominate some sailors on my behalf (just to make sure that we won!) which Angus agreed to. It had slipped my mind to tell Angus that after pulling a few strings and with the help from some colleagues at the RYA, one of the reigning 470 world champions, Nic Asher, would be taking my place and teaming up with his brother, Simon. Furthermore one of the WPNSA’s directors, none other than sailing legend and 1964 Olympic medallist, Keith Musto, also wanted to race for the Power Perfector. The sailors took to the water whilst
Dan Reading Sustainable Facilities Officer, The Green Blue
DURING the Sustainability Live! Exhibition at the NEC earlier this year I found myself on one of the largest stands at the show. I was approached by a man whom I had anticipated was an eager salesman. Angus was his name, Power Perfector was his game. I was adorned with RYA and BMF logos – it was not my cash he was interested in. “What are you doing at a sustainability show?” he asked, inquisitively. I explained that I worked for The Green Blue – the environment initiative of the British Marine Federation and Royal Yachting Association, working with boaters, clubs, training centres and a plethora of marine businesses to reduce their environmental impacts. A sailor at heart, Angus swiftly steered the conversation to my sailing credentials (I realise now he was assessing his chances!) and after establishing that Angus was a far superior sailor we turned to the contraption sitting on his stand. “Well . . . what is it?” I enquired, inquisitively. The Power Perfector is a handy
Angus and Kimberly narrowly beating Nic & Simon Asher round the first race buoy
device. In a nutshell, the UK is supplied by an average of 242 volts however all electrical equipment will work with a supply of 220 volts. The Power Perfector harmonises the supply to 220 Volts, thus saving electricity. This means, Angus proudly told me, a Power Perfector will save on average, eight per cent of a company’s electricity usage. I began to be interested – The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy sprang into my mind as only days before I had been on site discussing ways in which we could reduce the electricity usage and become the first Olympic venue to create 20 per cent renewable energy. Typically the unit has a payback of a few years so I was keen to find out how much a unit would cost for the academy. After some quick sums the total

the CEO of WPNSA, John Tweed, and I cheered from a support boat. We were on the edge of our seats as Keith and Nic worked together in their separate boats to block Angus, it was a fierce battle with the fleet tightly packed. The challenge was set such that we had to beat Angus in two of the three races. Amazingly in the first race, Nic and his brother beat the whole fleet and narrowly beat Angus in the second and third races. This was the first time Nic had ever sailed a Loch Long and the win was testament to his sailing abilities beating sailors who had spent their whole sailing careers in a Loch Long. It was a privilege to witness first-hand the contrasting styles of the sailing legend with the emerging star. Despite the age difference both were
extremely competitive. With the announcement that Team Origin is no longer contesting the next America’s Cup I was glad to see that Nic and Keith had adopted Team Origin’s environmental message ‘race for change’. After winning the Power Perfector I am pleased to say that WPNSA will be putting it to good use, consuming nine per cent less electricity than they were before. With some of the best sailors in the world looking at how they can help reduce their environmental impact, let’s see how we can reduce yours? ALL AT SEA | NOVEMBER 2010 | news@allatsea.co.uk WINTER is more an annoyance rather than a destructive affair in the UK. Most of us will not be landlocked by ice, which can cause real damage to hulls. But the cold here is still abrasive enough to hurt your sails, damage your engines and generate large repair bills – most of which can be avoided by doing a day’s work when the season ends. Do remember that spring is the busiest period for most boat yards, so if you don’t winterize and subsequently come back to find a job that needs a skilled hand, you may have to endure waiting lists and a resulting delay in getting back on the water.
Job one: tidy up Winterizing can be a large job and the best way to approach it is to work inside out. So following that logic, the first thing to do is have a good clean and tidy of everything below deck. The reason a tidy-up is needed is to preemptively tackle the big problem that affects the interiors of all boats: damp. Damp and condensation will spur on mould and mildew, encourage wood rot and positively aid the rusting of metal. The way to avoid coming back to an aged vessel after the winter break is firstly to remove as many items as possible to store at home, in a dry, well ventilated area, give everything a very good clean with fresh water, then make sure everything dries. If you have power to your boat over the winter and your yard allows it, consider getting a dehumidifier. It will keep your boat
condensation free over the cold months. But prepare to shop around as there are an awful lot to choose and not all dehumidifiers are suitable to the marine environment. One that we think ticks all the right boxes is the Meaco DD8L. Environmentally friendly, it uses no refrigerant and when attached to the provided hose, can be left running for month with the water draining into a sink, making it perfect for winter use. Most importantly, it has a humidistat to measure Relative Humidity which will ensure your boat will not become too dry – otherwise you risk splitting your woodwork. Job two: propulsion protection Sails and engines are arguably the most important parts of our vessels, as without the means to move we would have nothing more than expensive floating tubs. Annoyingly, Jack Frost is aware of our dependence on cloth and combustion and naturally focuses his efforts on these tender areas. Sails, like the insides of your boat, suffer dearly from mildew and mould inspired by the relentless damp. The inevitable presence of salt on your sails will also absorb moisture, helping to spur on the green menace. “Left untreated, mould and mildew can penetrate the sailcloth and start to break down

Job three: inboards and outboards Not protecting your engine, whether inboard or outboard, could mean you may come back to a host of potentially expensive problems. Your owners’ manual will have some storage guidelines that you must treat as basic requirements – failure to do so may result in your insurance company leaving you out in the cold should something happen. Here is a list of the essential tasks: Change the engine oil and filter. This will help remove the acids and other by-products that build up during use. Add a water/ antifreeze mix to the engine’s cooling system. Spray the engine with fogging oil, especially important for diesels, after fogging oil has been applied, the engine should be run until it stops – which should only take five to ten seconds at the most, otherwise engine damage may occur. Fill the fuel tank and add fuel stabiliser. Check with manufacturer as to what product they recommend. Disconnect and remove the battery, grease the terminals and take the battery home. Check the electrolyte level, regularly charge and discharge the battery but be careful not to overcharge it. Do not let the battery freeze. You could also place a small electric heater in the engine bay to help protect your engine from frost – as long as you have power available and if your yard allows it. Winterizing your engine is the most technical part of the whole process, if in doubt talk to your yard and consider employing their services. There is no shame in someone doing this delicate work for you.

the weave” explained Richard Hancock of sail cleaners Hancock Marine Services Ltd, “this has the effect of prematurely aging your sail, possibly reducing the lifespan by about a third”. Remove them from the boat, give them a good scrubbing with fresh water and then dry them before storing them away in a dry and well ventilated area. “Drying is a major factor” said Richard, as any water left on your sails during its time furled up in storage will foster the mould and mildew you were trying to get rid of. But this is no easy task given the size of your sails. Ideally they should be hung up – NOT on your boat if on jackstands! –, but alternatively you can lay your sail out to dry. You can play safe by employing a cleaning and storage service like Hancock Marine Services, who will wash the sail, apply any special cleaning to get rid of oil, grease, tar stains etc then dry and store your sail properly until Spring.

Job four: a close shave
Storage suggestions
It is not just the surfaces above the waterline that need some TLC, another vital part of preparing for the winter is stripping off all the marine growth from the underbelly of your craft. Have the boat lifted out of the water and pressure wash the hull. With a bit of elbow grease and maybe some help from bribed friends, clean, clean and clean until all the weeds, barnacles and whatever else has attached itself to your hull have been thoroughly vanquished. You should be left with a ‘fresh out of the packet’ clean look. Finally, make a check for any damage to your hull and have a look to see if any blisters have appeared. Blisters are one of the harbingers of osmosis, if you spot any – talk to your yard. When you come back in the spring, apply at least one coat of anti-fouling to protect your boat for the upcoming season before dipping the boat back into the winter.
Now your boat is prepared to idle for the winter, you then need to think how you are going to store it.
Boats on sticks The most common method to store your boat ashore is by propping it up on jackstands or placing it in a cradle. Storing your boat in this fashion will give you the opportunity to work on your boat throughout the winter. In terms of security, remember that boat yards will become far less populated during the colder months, with some turning into veritable ghost towns. Sadly, there will always be thieves about and boats on sticks present nice targets. Make sure you don’t leave any expensive looking toys on show. Those covering their boats should also

remember NOT to attach said covers to the jackstands underneath. As with enough wind bellowing, you risk moving the stands enough to either drop your boat or even blow over. If it happens, you’ll get more than just a slapped wrist. There is no such thing as typical mooring fees these days as it is very location dependent but as an example, Gosport Boat yard is in
a prime spot and charges £20 per week plus VAT for storing any craft up to 22 feet. On top of this, the ‘lift, scrub, block down and re-launch’ will set you back an additional £178 plus VAT. secure and check it regularly as you do not want your boat and trailer ‘walking’ off the blocks. The last thing you want for Christmas is to be jostled out of bed by the sound of an almighty, heartbreaking crash…
Motor boats Dry Stack
Blocking off your trailer can relieve the tyres and increase security
Trailer If you store your boat on a trailer remember to service your trailer along with the boat. Inflate the tyres, check the tread, examine the axles, grease the bearings and replace any rollers if you have to. Once your trailer is in good shape and your boat is sitting pretty, don’t skimp on the security. Get yourself a
decent wheel clamp and hitchlock at the very least. One way to enhance peace of mind is to remove the tyres and place the trailer on blocks for the winter, though you will need to employ a trolley jack. It will make your boat an awful lot more challenging to steal and give the tyres a deserved rest. If you do use the block approach make sure everything is absolutely
Winter Service
For motor boaters, dry stacking is all the rage these days – but is it for you? Dry stacks are more suited to those looking to keep their craft in commission throughout the winter thanks to their year round service. Andy Osman, regional manager with Premier Marinas said: “We offer an all year round service and even during the winter we only require an hour’s notice to put your boat in the water”. Year round access is certainly the main appeal of dry stacking your boat, as is a heightened sense of security by having your boat hoisted a couple of meters above the ground, unless you’re on the bottom rung. The downside is that you will not be able to work on your boat unless you have it removed and placed on blocks for a period of time. Gosport Marina has just introduced a new winter rate for a spot in their dry stack at £75 per month for any length of boat up to ten metres until 31 March. Setting Trailer Brakes
Knott Systems
Trailer Servicing How to maintain and replace everything from brakes to couplings.
3) Setting Knott Back
Plates
IMPORTANT Always rotate in a forward direction when setting brakes.
Back Plate Setting Commence by tightening the back plate adjuster nut (as shown in the adjacent photo) to bring the shoes in contact with the drum whilst at the same time rotating the wheels in the forward direction. The wheel must not be rotated in the reverse direction otherwise the auto reverse mechanism will be engaged and the procedure will need to be re-started. You will feel the shoes contact the drum. Continue revolving the nut until such a time that the wheel cannot be rotated with heavy hand pressure in the forward direction. The nut should then be backed off two full revolutions from this point (2 x 360 degrees). Care must be taken to ensure the backing off is two whole revolutions.
VERY IMPORTANT!
Rotate the wheel only in
the forward direction when
tightening the adjuster
Once all back plates have been set and checked on the Bowden cable, the next step is to ensure there is couplings should have zero no clearance in the brake rod. All modern clearance in the brake rod. To remove any clearance, tighten the front swivel nut (with domed face).
Once you are certain all the clearance has been removed, tighten the locknut up against the swivel nut to lock in place.
phone 0845 3 720 720 5448 Inde Parts Cat Ch11-2_pg70_2
Repeat the above procedure for the remaining one or three drums by jacking up the opposite side and chocking the remaining wheel(s) accordingly.
Check that all the clearance has been removed by moving and forward. Support the the rod backward brake rod whilst checking so that it does not sag under the weight of the rod and the compensator.
Finally level the compensator up by adjusting the locknuts to wind too tight as this taking care not would affect the brake cable are approximately level, set up, once these the second nut should be locked against the first to secure the assembly.

Maintaining a Trailer
Maintaining a Trailer An easy to use guide on the day-to-day upkeep of your trailer.
7.
Unlike the unbraked coupling a braked coupling has a “break away” cable. Its purpose is to apply the brakes should the trailer become detached from the towing vehicle. It is not meant to “attach” the trailer to the towing vehicle like the secondary coupling referred to previously. It is vital that this cable is in perfect condition. If there is any sign of damage to the cable or the hooks that attach it to the coupling or the vehicle and it should be replaced. This is a legal requirement.
7
Jockey Wheel – • Inspect the rubber tyre and
replace if worn or damaged.
• Wind the jockey wheel out fully and remove the inner shaft. Wash off with a degreasing agent and smear with new grease. • Re-assemble and grease the thread on the clamp.
Brake Linkages – Raise the trailer on ramps and ensure that all linkages are well lubricated and free of road dust. Check all nuts securing the Bowden cables are tight. Similarly the nuts on the brake rod connecting the compensator to the coupling should be secure.
Wheels Bearings – • Remove the hub cap to reveal the castellated nut. • If the grease is clean apply more to “top up”. • If the grease is dirty or emulsified then the bearing should be stripped – Chapter 11. • All bearings should then be re-packed with grease.
• Replace cap

GUIDE TO WINTER CARE AND STORAGE AirBerth keeps your boat high, dry and foul free
Final advice – you are not alone
AirBerth: the easy way out
“Because the boat spends all of its time out of the water when not in use and thanks to the fresh water rinse system marine growth simply does not have the time to prosper. “AirBerth is great for the winter as you will not have to pay any extra yard fees for a lift and scrub, plus the inflatable tubes are made of hard polyethylene so there is no corrosion from the water and no air will escape over the passing of time – meaning
you won’t have to come check on it during the off season.” The insurance company IRCM endorses this product and provides premium discounts to those who use it. The cradles can accommodate vessels from 15-feet to 46-feet and are suitable for mono-hull and multi-hull planning boats. www.pontoonanddock.co.uk 0845 1080420

Though seldom mentioned, there exists a range of personal boat lifts – ways you yourself can keep your boat out of the water when not in use. Of all the methods available, AirBerth is perhaps one of the most promising. In a nutshell an AirBerth is a floating cradle. It raises and lowers to allow your boat entry or to
disembark. It can be secured to your regular pontoon mooring, though not permanently. It is designed to be portable and also features a fresh water cleaning system to rinse the underside of your boat after use. They are fairly expensive however, so why invest? Simon Nadin from the Pontoon and Dock company makes a very convincing argument: “There is no need to anti-foul your boat” – and that’s a big plus in anyone’s book.
If like many of us, you lack the confidence to tackle any of the technical jobs, remember that your yard will offer winterising services. In fact, many boaters go for this option as it guarantees peace of mind and if something does go wrong you can just take it back to the yard rather than explain what you did to it. On that note, keep in mind that boat yards fill up early for both storage and maintenance so make sure you plan ahead.

BACK at the start of October more than 100 young windsurfers, all aged under 15, from as far a field as Scotland down to Cornwall got together to do battle in the final showdown of the Team15 Zone Championship, the 2010 Champions Cup. One of the competitors was ten-year-old William Allen who tells us just what went on…. “My team, the Axbridge Animals from the South West (North) zone and nine other Team15 regional champion teams met up at Northampton Sailing Club for a two day battle on the water where we were all hoping to win the Champions Cup trophy and take it home with us. Saturday was pretty gloomy with grey skies, but the wind was fantastic so we were able to blast around the lake and the racing was really exciting and there were some
pretty close finishes. In the evening we had a BBQ and quiz before curling up in our sleeping bags in preparation for more racing on Sunday. On Sunday we woke to bright sunshine and lots of wind again which was brilliant, racing was going to be great fun. We all competed in up to nine different races over the weekend and we whizzed around two courses in four different classes 3.5m, 4.5m 5.8m, and Techno 6.8m, before finishing with a fun race to round off the weekend – which was crazy, there were runners and windsurfs everywhere! After a long day on the water we finally got down to naming the winners and there were loads of prizes up for grabs for the winning team, individual class winners, merit award winners, the quiz winners and the fun
Quiz winners North Lincs Invaders relay trophy. And the winners of the 2010 Champions Cup... reigning champions The North Lincs Invaders representing the North zone, their coach Mark Butler said: “It is absolutely fantastic. We’ve been training hard in preparation. We feel really great and are chuffed to bits to be taking the trophy back home once again.” Along with the massive Champions Cup trophy the North Lincs Invaders picked up a ProKids Formula Board for their club from Tushingham/Starboard and other prizes from Neil Pryde, and Windsurf magazine, and all the competitors were also presented with goody bags from Animal who sponsored the event.

BOOKS IN BRIEF Arthur Ransome: Master Storyteller Great Northern Books £16.99 • ISBN 97819050808816
Celebrating 80 years of Swallows and Amazons ARTHUR Ransome has a lot to answer for . . . If it was not for his Swallows and Amazons books thousands of people may not have caught the boating bug and millions of children worldwide would not have been entralled and inspired by his delightful tales. This year is the 80th anniversary of the first in the Swallows and Amazons series. Twelve more books followed and Ransome was the first author to be awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal for childrens literature in 1936. Dame Ellen MacArthur who grew up in landlocked Derbyshire was just one of those who puts her early interest in sailing down to Ransome whose books were etched on her mind since childhood. Arther Ransome: Master Storyteller provides an insight into the Swallows and Amazons series, providing a fresh look at the prolific author and focuses on his life in the Lake District. Autor Roger Wardale is a retired primary school teacher who help to found the Arthur Ransome Society in 1990 who has had a life long passion for Ransome and his books.
The Complete Yachtmaster Sailing, Seamanship and Navigation for the Modern Yacht Skipper Adlard Coles Nautical • £24.99 THE Complete Yachtmaster has been a bestseller since first publication, and has established itself as the standard reference for Yachtmaster students and skippers of all levels of experience. In this completely updated seventh edition, Tom Cunliffe brings together all the essentials of modern cruising in one volume, and ensures that this time-tested book will continue to be the foundation for navigators, skippers and anyone undertaking coastal and offshore passages. A new chapter on collision avoidance in poor visibility will enable skippers to make full use of modern electronics in staying safe on the water, and avoid potential pitfalls and dangerous misunderstandings. The boathandling and seamanship sections have been thoroughly updated in line with recent developments, and the author’s open-minded approach to the GPS navigation revolution has been a beacon for others to follow.
Other subjects include: • An analysis of what makes a good skipper • The theory and practice of sailing • Navigation, including chart plotters and PCs • Passage planning and pilotage • Meteorology • Coping with emergencies Tom Cunliffe is not only an examiner of RYA Yachtmaster Instructors and Ocean candidates, he also runs up a heavy annual mileage in his own cruising yacht. This combination has given him the experience to know when to eyeball a pilotage challenge, when to plot on a chart and when you can work on an electronic screen. In this seventh edition, he shows the modern skipper how to use today’s exciting equipment to refine a philosophy of navigation that hasn’t changed since the beginning of seafaring.
The Adlard Coles Book of Radar RADAR is notoriously tricky to operate and ‘read’ correctly for collision avoidance either with the land or with other vessels. But used by an informed operator it is an immensely valuable navigation tool – especially in poor visibility. GPS will tell you where you are, but it won’t tell you if there’s another boat in that spot! Rather than taking a theoretical, academic approach, this book is highly practical and hands on – complementing the radar owner’s manual and explaining what the operator really needs to know when faced with actual
situations at sea. Packed with illustrative photos, charts and radar screen shots, this book gives guidance from a real life, on-the-water perspective, and will enable readers to solve problems on the spot. Borje Wallin got his first boat at the age of 12, spending summers sailing in the Stockholm archipelago. Having served as mate, chief mate and master of passenger vessels in a 40 year career on the water, he has used his experience to write several books on navigation and seamanship.

Sweet taste for pudding By Paul Antrobus
SPECIAL feasts feature multi-course menus when the wines change to match each one, including the dessert. ‘Pudding’ wines are sweet and generally fortified with added brandy to raise the alcoholic level above 14 per cent abv. The rule of thumb is the wine should be sweeter than the food it is served with. It is costly to make and pricey per bottle, so it’s mostly sold in 50 cl or 37.5 cl bottles, for sipping, not quaffing. Typical grapes used are Muscat and Sémillon. The grapes are left late on the vine until they grow a mould called the ‘noble rot’, which generates flavour but is very risky as they have to be picked before the mould turns into ‘grey rot’, making the grape useless. The grapes are shrivelled, looking like raisins, and yield much less liquid but much more sugar content to produce more alcohol. In cold countries, they leave the grapes
or blue cheeses. It sets the price point median at £18 for 50cl (Waitrose). A top of the range gem is Disznoko Tokaji Aszu, £26 for 50 cl. Anything stating ‘Tokaji’ will be Hungarian, superior and expensive. Although only 12 per cent abv it is a genuine classy dessert wine. It is rich, ripe, fruity, sweet and very drinkable with chocolates and coffee after the food is done! In an attractive individual carton, a bottle makes a nice Christmas present or something different to take to a dinner party. ‘Rivesaltes’ is an appellation for ‘vin doux naturel’ from the Roussillon Pyrénées area in southern France. Rivesaltes Ambre hors d’age is a good choice with a nutty aroma and 16 per cent abv, £13 for 50cl. An affordable bargain at only £5 a bottle (Tesco) is Muscatel de Valencia Spanish from muscat grapes. With a sweet floral aroma, it is fortified with brandy and sugar to make 15 per cent abv. Bring on the plumb duff, mince pies and Stilton – and a pudding wine treat for Christmas! But don’t forget them in the summer, either, or any time you want to push the boat out.
AAS0907 Pussers
In the drink
to freeze on the vine – the sugars don’t, the water does. The ice crystals get trapped in the pressing filters, so the grape juice is sugar concentrated. Whence the term ‘Ice Wines’ or ‘Eisweins’ sometimes used to define dessert wines. As with many great drinks, the process was probably discovered by accident when the harvest was unintentionally delayed, perhaps by a local battle. The farmers, facing ruin, tried to make wine anyway and discovered something new and tasty. Sauternes are the classic sweet wines, using the late-harvest, noble-rot process in the region just south of Bordeaux. The grapes are mainly Sémillon, plus Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Picking can only be done when the rot is just right on each bunch of grapes, so is often spread over several weeks. Fermentation and maturing can take another 14 months. This and the low yield per grape is what makes the price high – and the result worth it. Château Bastor-Lamontagne Sauternes, 14 per cent abv, sweet citrus, can work on its own as an apéritif or is recommended for fruit tart

Tribute to sailors
NEWS IN BRIEF Windfarm rescue WELLS inshore lifeboat rescued five RIBs carrying out cable-laying work with divers at Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm on 31 October. The work over ran and as the vessels made their way back to Wells the lead boat ran aground and took on water. At 8.45pm the lifeboat launched and escorted the four remaining RIBs, which were suffering electronic problems to the new outer harbour. The lifeboat went back out to the mother vessel and towed her in – despite her being heavily swamped. Altogether 11 people were involved and noone was hurt.
THE RNLI’s Chief Executive has paid tribute to sailors, highlighting their role in reinforcing maritime heritage. Speaking at Harwich Yacht Club this month, Paul Boissier said: “At a time when the professional seafarer is becoming something of a rarity in this country, we would be in danger of losing that deep understanding and love of the sea that is so fundamental to the British character were it not for a hard core of irrepressible enthusiasts.” Mr Boissier was guest of honour at the yacht club’s fundraising dinner, which raised around £1,000 for the RNLI. In his after dinner speech, he said: “The Royal Harwich is almost the same age as the RNLI and it was a real delight to be invited to speak at this prestigious club as one mariner to others.’ “The RNLI is a remarkable organisation. We look after the coast of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, providing a full 365 days a year lifeboat cover, ranging from the large Severn all-weather lifeboats for the most ferocious parts of our coastline, to the highly capable Atlantic and D-class inshore lifeboats.” By early November Harwich
Lifeguards’ autumn patrols RNLI lifeguards extended their summer patrols on five beaches in Cornwall during October, covering weekends and the school half term. The mild weather and good surfing conditions throughout the month saw beaches around the county extremely busy providing safety advice, keeping bathers and surfers within their flagged zones, advising on tides and sea conditions and preempting incidents.
Ten hour mission

lifeboats had launched 92 times in 2010. Mr Boissier said that last year was the RNLI’s busiest ever with more than 9,000 launches around the coast of the UK and the Republic of Ireland. This level of activity had continued in 2010 – lifeboats had launched more than 8,000 times, saved more than 340 lives and rescued or assisted
almost 16,000 people so far. He added: “All of this comes at a cost and in these difficult times the RNLI needs its supporters more than ever.” Paul Boissier is pictured accepting a lifeboat collection box – and proceeds from the evening – from Ewen Stamp, Commodore of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club.
ON November 1 the lifeboat stationed on the Isle of Barra off the west coast of Scotland was alerted after a trawler suffered engine failure several miles off Barra Head. RNLI volunteers launched at 12.27pm and took two hours to reach the trawler which they Castlebay. By the end of the rescue it was ten hours since their pagers had sounded. The following day the RNLI had to help the same trawler again. Her anchor was not holding and there was concern she could move into the path of a ferry. The trawler was taken to North Bay Head and tied up safely. Photo: Nigel Millard
