PORTSMOUTH’S Historic Dockyard took on a new look when it was blanketed by the early December snow. While transport systems in some parts of Britain generated reports of chaos, the Historic Dockyard took
on an eerily tranquil facade. The old warships loomed out of the cold, sedately covered in snow. The weather forced the dockyard to close on December 1 and could only operate a restricted service the day after.
Managing Director Robert Bruce said: “Our great historic ships and buildings seem so peaceful and quiet when under snow, somewhat at odds with their tumultuous and dramatic past. “Our visitors, including a large

Mutual goodwill IT could be all that we all want for Christmas . . . a no nonsense, easy to use, foolproof online system for securing a berth. It could be a boon for marinas, helping them to manage capacity and make optimum use of space to satisfy visitors crying out for a lunchtime or overnight stay. What a difference it could make to certain harbours in some parts of the country at busy summer weekends. With the current hit-andmiss, turn-up-and-take-a-chance, first-come, first-served system, visitors can sometimes be left high and dry – or more precisely stuck out at sea – unless they come in out of the sun and the sea breeze by early afternoon. The Waypoint, the new web-based scheme for making bookings, paying
for them and managing them has huge potential. In fact it sounds too good to be true . . . and we all know that if it sounds too good to be true, generally, it is too good to be true. But it does not have to be like that. The scheme could be wonderful for marinas and harbours and could bring boating into the 21st century for their customers. It is all a matter of incentives. The more marinas join in the better for them and the operating company. And they both have a huge interest in getting boat owners and berth holders on board. In fact that is the key to success and therein lies a clue to how it needs to work. Marinas, perhaps understandably,

Revamp for Milford A NEW partnership has promised to substantially increase the level of service provision for boat owners at Milford Marina. Milford Haven Port Authority has teamed up with the South Wales based marina operating company, Cardiff Marine Group, to invest more than £5 million into improving Milford Marina over the next few years. The marina and impending changes will be managed by the Pembrokeshire Marine Group. The first half of 2011 will see Milford Haven Port Authority focusing on rejuvenating the

have been reluctant to share the takings from visitors. That has been the jam on their cake. But this could be big business and if it is a numbers game, the proceeds of visitor sub letting must surely be part of the answer. It is a matter of mutual concern generating mutual benefits. If marinas reap the rewards of more efficient management and growth of their business it is worth investing in encouraging berth holders to play their part. Indeed there could be wider benefits for waterside pubs and restaurants who are often left not knowing how to plan. We shall see . . . but here’s to a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you at the boat show.

berthing pontoons, developing additional capacity and creating a new ‘launch on demand’ service for boat owners. Other plans being considered include the introduction of a new locking system to enable access to the marina and docks at all states of the tide. A new dry stack berthing facility is also under consideration. Cardiff Marine Group Director, Chris Odling-Smee, said: “This agreement marks a significant step forward for the provision of first class marine leisure facilities and services throughout Wales.”
A NEW berth vacancy intenet management system has gone online to help marinas make the most of berthing. And if marinas allow it, it could be used to make money for berthholders. ‘The Waypoint’, the web-based booking system requires a marina to invest in the software and then encourage bertholders to sign up. Marinas will then be automatically updated when participating bertholders leave the marina and their space becomes free. An ‘App’ should be released in January 2011 to optimise the software for smart phones. The software is free for marinas for the first year and completely free to boat owners, though a ‘premium’ service also exists for the latter at £50 per year. The premium service could see boat owners making some money when their berths are rented out to visitors but it is up to marinas, not Waypoint, how much they will receive. Founder Charles Bacon said there was ‘significant interest’ from marinas. www.thewaypoint.com

Dee celebrates - five years on RECORD breaking sailor Dee Caffari celebrated a special anniversary last month. On 21 November 2005, Dee set off on what was to be a record breaking voyage – the Aviva Challenge. Having never sailed solo before, Dee left Portsmouth alone aboard her 72-foot yacht to circumnavigate the globe against the prevailing winds and currents, returning to the south coast 178 days later as the first woman to complete the voyage. Dee’s next task is to prepare for the Barcelona World Race. As the only female team in the
race, Dee and her Spanish coskipper Anna Corbella are keen to put in a competitive performance. Dee’s ultimate ambition is to return to solo sailing and achieve a podium position in the Vendée Globe 2012. The search for a title sponsor to join this campaign continues. Awards for unsung heroes THE Princess Royal presented awards to 44 RYA volunteers in a ceremony to reward the unsung heroes of boating. The most prestigious award of Honorary Life Membership was awarded to Rod Carr, former Chief Executive of the RYA. The award recognised Rod’s contribution to the sport since 1981. From developing the UK’s most successful Olympic Sailing Team to his work increasing awareness and participation of the sport as CEO, Rod has been an ambassador for all aspects of sailing for last thirty years. Rod said “I have attended this ceremony for many years and have seen the great pleasure it gives others and I now have that feeling that
myself. I feel really chuffed.” Winner of this year’s Francis Elkin Award was Robert Harper, RYA Sailability Regional Organiser in Northern Ireland, where he encouraged and supported many people with disabilities to go sailing. Samantha Green from Northampton Sea Cadets was one of the winners of the Youth Category having encouraged young people to get on the water, enabling more than 1,000 training hours to be achieved, plus thanks to Sam, two more dinghy instructors have been trained. Sarah Treseder, RYA Chief Executive said: “The 44 RYA winners are an inspiration to us all and it is my pleasure to recognise and celebrate their hard work and dedication.”
NEWS IN BRIEF Ferry changes NEW restrictions have been introduced controlling sea traffic into Portsmouth when large RORO ferries over 20,000 tons are in port. The Queen’s Harbour Master has directed that when the wind speed is less than 30 knots large RO-RO ferries do not pass opposing traffic between the Outer Spit Buoy and the Ballast Pile, that large ferries do not enter beyond the Outer Spit Buoy until their berth is clear and that a tug is there during each movement. The harbour will close to opposing traffic from 20 minutes before to 30 minutes after a large RO-RO ferry’s reported time of passing the Outer Spit Buoy or slipping, when the wind speed is more than 30 knots.

Lifeboat named after Nelson goes bust in Malta tragic young lifesaver IN tribute to a young lifesaver whose life was tragically cut short, an RNLI lifeboat named after him has been launched on what would have been his 20th birthday. Ollie Naismith died in a car crash in Looe, Cornwall, last December. Family and friends raised £69,000 pounds – more than double the original £31,000 pound target – to pay for a new D-class inshore lifeboat for the town in his memory. The official naming ceremony will take place in the spring.
A NEW sculpture of Admiral Lord Nelson was unvelied at Malta’s Maritime Museum last month. The bronze bust by Anglo-Maltese sculptor, Robert Hornyold-Strickland, the son of a British naval officer, was produced to show Britain’s most honoured naval hero as he really looked, rather than the romanticized
vision so often portrayed in paintings and sculptures by earlier generations. The first cast of the bust is at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth Strickland decided to depict Nelson on the eve of the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Earlier he blockaded Malta from 1798 to 1800 to assist the Maltese in removing French occupiers.
THE second annual Sail the Solent challenge is being supported by solo sailor Alex Thomson to raise money for Action Medical Research, which helps sick babies and children. The challenge will see complete novices and sailors with some experience being trained by professionals to race 40-foot yachts around the Isle of Wight. The event will take place between 13 and 16 May. www.action.org.uk/sailing

Blow Boat challenge for children WEYMOUTH and Portland National Sailing Academy welcomed local school children in support of BBC Children in Need. The Dolphin Class from Underhill Junior School took part in a ‘blow boat’ challenge. The children worked in pairs to build their own model boats from kit supplied, then raced off against each other down the ‘blow boat’ course in the event hall of the world class sailing venue. John Tweed, Chief Executive at the sailing academy said: “We are delighted to have supported BBC Children in Need for the third year in a row. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy works closely with the Chesil Trust which has a ‘Sail for £5’ programme in place which has enabled over 6,000 local children to try sailing for £5.”

Mary’s voyage for cancer BREAST cancer survivor, Mary Falk, is celebrating after raising £100,000 over five years for the Institute of Cancer Research. Mary, a retired solicitor from Lymington, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 following a routine scan. She already owned a racing boat so she decided to raise the money by
competing in several demanding solo yacht races. Then aged 60, she took part in her first series in August 2006, zigzagging back and forth across the English Channel for 300 miles. ICR spokeswoman Louise Gebbett said: “Mary’s accomplishments have been nothing short of astonishing.” www.maryfalk.com
THE Polish Embassy in London said a Cornish skipper who helped save a stricken Polish tall ship which lost its masts with 47 children and crew on board was considered a hero. Shaun Edwards, skipper of the Newlyn-based trawler Nova Spiro, fought horrendous seas for three days while towing the 180-foot Fryderyk Chopin to the safety of Falmouth harbour.

New officers raise their flags THE Royal Southern Yacht Club has elected new flag officers. Mark Inkster is the newly appointed Commodore. The youngest member to hold the post, Mark has followed the traditional route to senior Flag Office having been active on the Sailing Committee chairman and Rear Commodore Sailing. He brings commercial and legal experience and when not in the Club, runs the family timber import business. David Mead is Vice Commodore, the club’s Honorary Treasurer Brian Mead is Rear Commodore Sailing and Tim Robinson is Rear Commodore House. One of the first actions for new Commodore was ratifying the reciprocal arrangements agreed with the Yacht Club de Monaco.
ANDY Shaw, Ed Dyer, Aaron Cooper and Sarah Hickman have won all 12 of their matches in the first heat of the Royal Southern Academy Match Cup. Shaw, Captain of Southampton University Sailing Club and an academy member showed why he is also the World Student Match Race champion. His controlled aggression meant he was rarely headed over the start line. On the few occasions when overtaken on the course, he fought back so that over two days of racing, he always finished first. Sailing Laser SB3s supplied by Pelican Racing, competitors enjoyed their first taste of asymmetric match racing.
Back at the Prize Giving, Academy Chairman, Karen Henderson-Williams, made a special presentation to Guy Jackson, who conceived and organised the Academy Match Cup. The Royal Southern Yacht Club’s Academy is for young people aged 18-25. They race Laser SB3s including Match Racing, and IRC, and offer special coaching sessions. The Sailing Programme, running from September 2010 to July 2011 is aimed and devised for young people who live in the region and those who go to a local university. The next heat is on 5/6 March 2011 with the finals on 26/27 March. www.royal-southern.co.uk/ Academy/tabid/321/Default.aspx

A foreign seaweed that rampages through marinas, has been discovered in Cornwall. Wakame, a large brown kelp usually found in China, Japan and Korea, is now growing rapidly in the Fal and the Helford River according to Cornwall Wildlife Trust experts.
The trust’s marine conservation officer, Angie Gall, said: “The outbreak is under control thanks to the quick action of conservation teams.” The seaweed is thought to have arrived in Cornwall on the hulls of visiting boats.

THE RYA turned the spotlight on some of this year’s most inspiring young sailors as the 2010 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Award winners were announced. The 13 young sailors from 12 of the RYA regions were nominated by sailing clubs and selected as winners by the regions’ committees. Ranging from gold medal wins to outstanding dedication to their club, all of the winners have made a large impact on youth sailing this year. In January, the youngsters will be treated to a VIP day at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show followed by the national YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award ceremony where they will receive their Regional Young Sailor trophies. The three finalists of the YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year award have also been announced. Anya Colley is an 18-year-old jet skier who secured the 2010 RYA National British Ski Stock Championship Title earleir this year. Hannah Freeman and Joanna Mitchell won the RYA Volvo Youth Nationals in Weymouth in April 2010 and placed fourth at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Turkey, narrowly missing out on a second through protest. THE ebb and flow of the tidal Thames has been a natural restriction for London’s boat owners. Now a new marina has opened between the fashionable boroughs of Chelsea and Fulham – the Imperial Wharf Marina that beats the tide. Sporting 600 metres of private mooring space and a separate private pier for embarking and disembarking passengers, Imperial Wharf marina offers the ability to come and go, regardless of the state of the tide. The marina is under the watchful eye of a retired Naval Commander and Chris Livett, Waterman to HM Queen and Director of Imperial Wharf Marina Ltd, said: “We are very proud to have opened this landmark facility. Hard work brings a happy ending Rupert said: “Although you never stop learning the driving part of racing became ‘relatively’ straight forward and the new challenge was to keep up with boat and propeller developments as the series matured”. Race wins followed for his team with a second and third championship placing in 2008 and 2009, and finally the title in 2010. Amidst economic doom and gloom the loss of the series title sponsor Honda Formula Four Stroke developed into P1 Superstock with new engines - Mercury 300hp, a lower centre of gravity setup and a top speed close to 80mph. That proved to be easy to drive quick but very tricky once trimmed out on the edge. Rupert’s boat, Heights of Abrahams, is now up for sale as he looks for the next challenge. It has been a great journey and he has met some fantastic people. In particular there was Sophie from the Hamble fuel berth in Southampton who has turned out to be his greatest prize of all. She is now Mrs Pugh and mother of Rupert’s daughter Georgie.
Shelley Jory-Leigh British Powerboat Champion www.shelleyjory.com
HOW hard can it be? That was the question Rupert Pugh the newly crowned P1 Superstock 300 Champion asked himself watching the 2004 Southampton Honda Formula Four Stroke Grand Prix. Rupert had some motorsport experience but had never seen anything like this before. Exciting racing, big sponsors and a healthy fleet. The obvious flaw was that he knew nothing about boats except for a brief topper sailing course in Poole many years ago which doesn’t really count for much in the world of powerboat racing. He recruited a willing navigator during a stag party in Miami who had less experience than his topper course and it was not long before they found themselves on the starting line in 2005 Largs, Scotland not entirely sure on where the start was nor in which direction they were going! However they managed a creditable sixth place and he had found the answer to his question, bloody difficult, physically painful and now the boat needs fixing! But he loved it and had to get

some more! After many hours of training in the gym and on the water, numerous crashes and finally a sponsor, Rupert had learnt how to drive fast but not how to win races. His final driving lesson was to
listen to the team manager and temper speed with a tiny bit of mechanical sympathy for the boat. Never was the old adage of “To finish first, you must first finish,” more appropriate. It was so true in Liverpool where
he broke down with a monster lead, 30 metres from the finishing flag. Sure enough the elusive win came the following year, 2007, ironically at Liverpool. A big sponsor now on board brought fresh challenges too.

A policy we can all enjoy The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.
WITH the Tullet Prebon London Boat Show launching us, as is tradition now, into the New Year, and with a performance by “yours truly” on the stage on Sunday 16 January, I noticed with much interest the disability access policy statement on the official Boat Show website. It states: “ExCeL requires disabled visitors to be afforded the same opportunities as able-bodied visitors enjoy, and to this extent organisers must ensure that exhibition stands are easily accessible to visitors using wheelchairs”. It goes on to say: “National Boat Shows ask Exhibitors to actively comply with the DDA and not discriminate against any form of disability with people who have difficulty walking, seeing or hearing who wish to access their stand. “Where there is no space available for a ramp nor budget for a lift, we 3870-Allatsea advert:Layout 1 ask our Exhibitors to set out exactly
with Disabilities Act, the Norwegian Cruise Line was fined $1,000,000 for failing to provide interpreters for its deaf passengers. In the UK we have the Disability Discrimination Act that affords the UK’s eight million disabled citizens similar rights. It’s a big stick that I would hope our industry can avoid by using common sense. And if you want to be accessible but are uncertain what you need to do, then by all means email me via my website. The cost of a mini access audit can not only potentially increase visitors to your stand and make their experience more inclusive, it could prevent a letter from the DDA landing on your mat.
Topping off an eventful year IT’S been a busy year for me. December 10 2009 saw me embark on my voyage from Lanzarote across the Atlantic in my wheelchair aboard the 60-foot catamaran Impossible Dream. I arrived in the British Virgin Islands on January 7 having sailed the 3,000 miles in 28 days. Within a week, the BVI government had bestowed upon me the accolade of “Honorary Belongership”, an

Geoff and 8-year-old son Tim at Windsor Castle after receiving his MBE
honour previously only awarded to Lawrence Rockerfelle. It’s about all I share in common with the multibillionaire. In June 2010 I was notified that I had been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for “Services to Sailing for the Disabled” and in November 2010 I had the pleasure of collecting it from the Queen herself at Windsor Castle. It was a day that my family and I will remember for a long time. Adding to the accolades, a couple of Honorary Doctorates, one from Solent University for Sport, the other from Winchester University for Science, meant that November was a busy month with my posh suit and tie visiting the dri-cleaners more times in a month than they
have in their entire life. And to crown a truly memorable year, in the same week that I was “gonged” by Her Majesty, I learned that I am one of three who have been shortlisted for the prestigious YJA Yachtsman of the Year Award. Voting is restricted to members of the Yachting Journalist Association (no, I’m not a member so unable to vote for myself), and the winner will be announced at a luncheon at Trinity House on Tuesday 11 January. Whatever the outcome, it’s a tremendous honour to be nominated and my thanks to everyone who has supported me in my various escapades in recent years. Things are shaping up nicely for a constructive 2011. Date for your diary: 16 January 2011, Tullet Prebon Boat Show, 12.00 to 12.20 in the Knowledge Box. how they are going to comply with the DDA so far as reasonably practicable”. And quite right too you may think. Of course, anyone with a disability who visits boat shows knows that the London Boat Show is far more accessible than its Southampton counterpart. The complex outdoor layout of Southampton spread over three sites only further complicates matters. But, to be honest, even making allowances for the venue, access on to exhibitor stands at Southampton for elderly or disabled visitors is woeful to say the least, even on to those at ground level. I’ll stop short of naming the main offenders but I might not be so charitable next year. Perhaps if the site owners, Southampton City Council, were to have an access policy statement like that of ExCel it would force exhibitors to do something. If exhibitors can comply with the regulations for London, why not Southampton? I suggest organisers of the Liverpool show in April and May take note because I will be taking an interest. And for those still unconvinced, you might like to know that in 3/12/10 12:49 Page 1 October 2010, using the Americans

TV and Facebook help disabled sailors WHEN the RYA’s Seamanship Foundation and Sailability disability sailing charities merged in the mid-1990s to create RYA Sailability, it supported around 80 sailors in the UK. During 2010, the number of people introduced to sailing through RYA Sailability smashed through the 25,000 mark worldwide, with more than 150 Sailability groups in the UK alone and Dubai the latest country to get involved.
RYA Sailability Manager Debbie Blachford had one vision when she took over the Seamanship Foundation reigns in 1993; bring
The Sailor’s Story THE story goes that Monique Foster discovered Sailability by chance after driving past Bury Lake in Rickmansworth where Colne Valley Special Sailors were practicing. Two years later and Monique, who has multiple sclerosis and has also battled CMT – an inherited neurological disease – since birth, was a 2010 Access Class World Championship silver medallist. She didn’t set out to win medals; simply falling in love with a sport she
says gave her a sense of freedom. But a natural flair for making boats go fast didn’t go unrecognised by CVSS chairman, Peter Hammond, who encouraged Monique to enter the 2008 UK Access Class Championships. She hasn’t looked back. “Sailing’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” she said, “Once you’re on the water you compete on a level playing field. “It’s sailors inspiring sailors. It’s completely changed my life.”

more local sailing opportunities to disabled people. But she could never have imagined just how global ‘local’ would be within 15 years. “What we’ve managed to do is create a family, a culture that once people have that first experience they want to stay involved,” she said. “There are some 9,000 people, both able-bodied and disabled, who provide Sailability volunteer support. They’re at the heart of everything we do.” Sailability TV (www.ryasailability. tv) was launched in 2008. Sailability’s Facebook page attracted 600 regular users and more than one million visits, in its first six months and the new Sailability talking iPhone app is an even more convenient. In 2011, a new TEAM SAILABILITY volunteer handbook, promoting, supporting and rewarding structured volunteer skill development will continue to be piloted at 20 sites, while Sailability will be expanding the work it does in windsurfing, cruising and inland waterways.

RACED BY PEOPLE LIKE YOU
Sailing at Blackwell - Jordan, Shaun, Kay, James and Robin.
The Sailability group When Blackwell Sailing moved into a new purpose-built, two-storey centre on Lake Windermere this year it marked the latest chapter in the remarkable 18-year tale of this Cumbrian Sailability group. It started simply as a will to get people with learning disabilities from a local day centre onto the water, with one donated GP14, based at a boathouse with no electricity or running water. By 2007 the group had become the RYA’s North West Sailability Centre of Excellence. This year alone 200 people from a range of local learning and physical disability charities, schools
and a college, attended sessions at Blackwell with two-thirds of these regular sailors. Some 35 invaluable local volunteers, both able-bodied and disabled, underpin activity with Blackwell now owning six boats. Blackwell Sailing founder and manager David Hall said: “We’re a bit different to other Sailability groups in that we’re not part of a sailing club. We started with the people and the facilities came gradually as demand increased. “Just being able to give people the chance to do something they wouldn’t normally be able to do, and seeing their faces light up, is incredible.”

Dangerous chafe in matter of hours Sticky’s tips By Sticky Stapylton
THE definition of a fairlead from Denny Desoutter’s Boat Words is: “A device made to lead a rope smoothly or fairly”. Many a time I have seen warps run as shown in picture one, passed through the fairlead and then taken back to a cleat or winch at nearly 360° to the original direction. Running your breast ropes or springs like this will be fine in a well sheltered marina but I would be
chary about doing this where there is any form of fetch, wind or waves. Have a look at the second picture. This was the result of six hours chafe
Alternative to gorilla power We all know that a frightened crew with a bucket is meant to be the answer to a skipper’s prayers you need to clear water out of your bilges in an emergency. But let us face it, if you have a serious flow of water coming in, the bucket will remove some water and your bilge pumps will remove a bit more, but a small petrol generator can move 140 litres a minute and to a height of three metres or so. That is a bit over 30 gallons, your average bucket is about
two gallons, so filling the bucket 15 times, lifting it up and emptying it say into the cockpit, means you will have to manage this once every four seconds to match the generator. By investing in the generator you have a quieter, more efficient method of charging your batteries and in the case of a holing, a member of your crew is freed up to do other things. Alternatively make sure you have a young gorilla type on board!
on a pontoon in the outer harbour whilst the crew were ashore in St Peter Port when a gale was blowing.
Snubbed overnight Do you bother with a chain snubber when anchoring overnight? To save tying a rolling hitch, a hook which can be simply secured to your anchor chain is an easy way out, and it can be easily uncoupled in a hurry. What is important though is that you do pay out plenty of your snubbing line; up to ten or 15 metres depending on depth. The stretch and resilience of this warp will ensure a more comfortable sleep whilst at anchor. Your snubber needs to be of nylon
which will give up to 20 per cent of its length. I have seen shackles and carabiner hooks used for attaching the snubber to the chain but these can make recovery of the anchor rode difficult.
Turkey trot I am helping the owners of a Jeanneau Odyssey DS 45 deliver their boat to Marmaris in Turkey, starting early March. There will be six legs, the first two of which will be ideal for those seeking their Yachtmaster Ocean ticket. Email me if interested. instructor@sail-help.co.uk www.sail-help.co.uk

Up close and personal but please keep your distance Jane Swan Project Manager, The Green Blue
IT can reach 12 metres in length, weigh up to seven tons and it’s right here in UK waters. It’s Cetorhinus maximus – or the Basking Shark and it’s the world’s second largest fish. Spectacular but harmless, it appears off the south west coast in April and cruises north over the summer months before mysteriously disappearing. And it’s just one of the amazing creatures you might encounter when out on the water. As a dinghy racer (and not a very good one), I don’t have much time to take in the scenery, concentrating too hard on staying upright and dry but
taking time out last summer, I joined a trip around Chichester Harbour on the silent, solar powered catamaran, Solar Heritage, followed a couple of weeks later by a not-so-silent visitors cruise on the River Dart. Right on cue on both occasions seals bobbed up on the surface, stared us out for what felt like an age and then disappeared. And I realised how magical those glimpses really are, and why for many boaters, getting up close and personal with the varied wildlife inhabiting the UK waters is a big part of the experience. What I also realised is that probably very few of us know that a recent change in the law – the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Amended – means that anyone can now be prosecuted for disturbing wildlife, and ignorance of the law
will not be taken as an excuse. Disturbance can be creating too much noise, creating too much wash or just getting too close for comfort – in fact, it’s doing anything that affects the way wildlife would normally behave, for example, frightening resting seabirds so that they take flight. And reckless disturbance, when someone knows that they are causing disturbance and carry on regardless, can even lead to a fine or a prison sentence! Whilst this might make you think twice about ever getting on the water again, most boaters are
Your Lifesaving Supplier
already pretty responsible and in fact the steps to avoid disturbance are nothing more than common sense – keep your distance, move slowly, don’t overstay your welcome and don’t chase. But to give a guiding hand, as well as show how many amazing creatures are all around us, The Green Blue has launched The Green Marine Wildlife Guide with The Wildlife Trust. With top tips for spotting marine life and beautiful illustrations of basking sharks, whales, dolphins, seals and jellyfish, the guide will help every boater to identify the
marine megafauna of our seas and explain how to act when you encounter wildlife so that you avoid disturbance and enjoy at a distance. If you’re heading to the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show, drop by the RYA Stand No. 85 to pick up your free copy or catch us in The Knowledge Box at 12.40pm on 10, 11 and 12 January to hear more.

Stocking your Christmas locker In the drink By Paul Antrobus
AAS0907 Pussers
A CHRISTMAS drinks treat need not be necessarily more expensive, just a bit different from the usual. Christmas food specials, meats, fish, puddings, an extended cheese selection and novelty pickles all provide a great excuse for some special drinks to go with them. Here are a few suggestions which have featured in All at Sea over the last year or so. Fun, especially for occasional specialoccasion drinkers: Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer. Fizzy, refreshing and tart, it can be served over ice with a slice of lemon and it’s not too aggressive at four per cent abv. Or fun and non-alcoholic: Bundaberg Ginger Beer is around in several mainstream supermarkets. Tasty, it’s made in Australia especially to go with their famous Bundaberg Rum to make the Ozzie favourite ‘dark ‘n’ stormy’ mix. Use the Crabbie’s with the rum for a stronger ‘dark ‘n’ very stormy’ party booster! Gin: Plymouth Navy Strength at 57 per cent really pushes the boat out. Proper gin viscosity, juniper and coriander to the fore, it does wonders for tonic! White wine: Tim Adams Pinot Gris from South Australia and a mutation of Pinot Noir. A bit of a treat at £10 a bottle. Or ‘N’ on the label for the Hungarian Nagyrede Estate. The Pinot Grigio is dry, fresh, very pale and affordable at only £4.25 a bottle at my local supermarket. Red wine: Italia Montepulciano and Primitivo. It’s fresher than mainstream French wines so good for the drier type turkey meat. Usually under £5 a bottle. More earthy is the Chilean Gran Tierra Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere Dark ruby red and full bodied, it goes well with food from grilled sausages to prawn curry. Around at £4.50 a bottle. Beers: Not going out? Have a strong treat for mellow relaxation in your own front room. Brakspear Triple, is 7.2 per cent abv. It’s bottleconditioned so pour gently. Something really special? Innis & Gunn rum-cask-matured aleis a 7.4 per cent abv sipper at about £2 (Waitrose) for a sensible 33cl bottle. Lager: Peroni Nostro Azzuro 5.1 per cent abv. Italian refreshing at £1.20 a 33cl bottle. Fizz: Some good Cavas now costing not much more than normal wine. La Rosca Brut from the Barcelona region of Spain is 11.5 per cent abv. It is dry but not acidic, grapey and around £5 in major supermarkets. Vodka: Got to be Wight Vodka for yotties.
ww.allatsea.co.uk
Wight Christmas cocktail: ½ shot each Wight vodka, cranberry and pomegranate juices, top up with Cava and garnish with pomegranate seeds. Exotic! Scotch: Old Pulteney 12-year-old in a nice gift tin with a Stevenson sea poem and ‘puffer’ ship illustration (£26). Sea-air matured in Wick, Scotland, so not peaty. It’s an excellent drink or Christmas present. Don’t forget the rum for the dark ‘n stormy or fruity punches or with sticky puddings. Pusser’s Blue Label has tradition, flavour and
a powerful 54.5 per cent abv in its favour, (about £28) and there is a range of beautiful but pricey ceramic decanter specials (at Nauticalia) for top drawer yotty presents. It’s a treasure hunt to find the very neat 200ml hip flask. Clue: ahadleigh-wine.com, £14, or their shop at Locksheath Retail Park, near Southampton. After dinner: Calvados Pere Magloire VSOP matured in oak, apple crisp, is great with mature cheeses. Widely available at about £28 a bottle.

These subdue even the noisiest of engines. The results are amazing! Not only is noise reduced on deck and in the cabins, dockside observers often comment on how quiet the boat is once fitted with these blankets.
For use on wood and GRP Non Flammable, reinforced foil faced, acoustic foam with a sheet of Lead sandwiched inside. The lead acts as a block to the sound, especially low frequency diesel noise. The foam absorbs airborne sounds.
The blankets are manufactured using a sheet of lead sandwiched inside two layers of class “O” open cell acoustic foam and covered with Fortaglas.

We offer everything from supplying a single sheet of egg box foam to offering a complete design and fit solution for your boat.
Acoustic foam with a reinforced foil facing on one side and a damping sheet on the other. The heavy damping sheet, unlike the sheet on competitor products, sticks directly to the metal. The foam absorbs the airborne noise and the barrier reduces the noise vibrations in the metal itself.
A profiled acoustic foam. An economical solution that still gives excellent results. It has very high absorption values as well as offering very good heat insulation. •Twin blankets on a large motor yacht

LONDON: THE BIG PREVIEW
ALL AT SEA | DECEMBER 2010 | news@allatsea.co.uk ICE has carpeted our streets, the latest rehashed celeb biographies are gracing the bookshelves and our public transport system could be knocked over by snow at any moment. Yes, the winter is certainly in full swing but we are all looking forward to the annual event that helps welcome a new year, encourages selfless behaviour, merriment and brings us closer as a family - the Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show. Kicking off 2011 with a bang, the Boat show at the ExCeL arena will open its doors on the 7 January and this year, the organisers say, it will be different.
New tricks The Boat Show has a host of new tricks up its sleeve, most notable of which is the large watersports twist on 2011’s event. The entire North Hall will sport
The seventy metre pool is tipped to be the main attraction
a dedicated watersports zone, which will see a 70 x 24 metre pool installed for demonstrations of various water borne activities including dinghy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding – SUP and more. Wakeboarding will also feature at the show and leading the charge will be professional rider and spokesman for the sport, Matt Crowhurst. An overhead cable will be installed to tow the riders and obstacles will be put in place for the pro’s to perform tricks. Matt Crowhurst said: “There will be a double-sided kicker and a huge rail that we’ll be sliding along right in front of the crowds – so bring your rain coats!” The pool will also combine ‘try-it’ sessions and live demos by watersports experts which will include a canoe polo championship and an invitational SUP Sprint championship. And with John
Matt Crowhurst will be on hand to share tips and give advice

Hibbard, SUP distance champion on hand to coach, there has never been a better time to give it a go. The North Hall will also have a beach bar for those who want to take a step back from the pool and enjoy nice refreshments.
Boats Of course the big reason we flock to the show is the boats and there are two big changes to the layout this year. First is the Boardwalk. Taking the form of raised pathways, the Boardwalk will provide showgoers with the chance to wander the dry marina, meaning the boats on display inside the arena, and view the vessels as if they were floating on the water. This certainly seems like an advantage, but spectators will of course be able to inspect the undersides of the boats as well.

Another new addition to January’s show will be the used boat marina. Outside on specially apportioned pontoons, approximately 70 boats will be on show for general inspection for anybody looking to pick up a bargain. In addition to the used boats marina there will of course be the traditional display of brand new boats ready to be salivated over by inspired and serious onlookers alike.
The knowledge Moving back inside, and another new addition is the Knowledge Box. This informal auditorium will play host to many big names of the boating world as they impart their knowledge, tips and anecdotes on all topics from buying and selling boats to racing and jet skiing. The latter will be presented by Anya Colley (pictured),
LONDON: THE BIG PREVIEW who is seven times IJSBA world champion and was the first female to win the British Junior Winter Championships. Other famous faces will include master mariner Tom Cunliffe, famous racer and All at Sea columnist Shelley Jory-Leigh, Olympic Sailor Mark Covell and around the world racer Mike Golding – and many more.
BrushBoarding The fantastic new sensation of BrushBoarding will also be making an appearance. An activity suited to everyone, BrushBoarding will see would-be boarders, and everyone else, jumping aboard a foam board and surfing on a bed of brushes. Kyle Dent, inventor and CEO will be on site to teach the basics and make sure everyone gets a go. “We expect to be constantly busy,” said Kyle, “it’s suited to all ages and abilities and provides a new safe way to introduce able-bodied and disabled people to board sports, allowing them to safely get fit while having fun.” Currently appearing at high profile events including Grands Prix, boat shows and festivals, Kyle expects his attraction to start appearing in sports/activity clubs, hotels, shopping centres and theme parks across the UK. He is also looking for a branding partner to help his operation become global. www.brushboarding.co.uk

MONTEREY’S newest addition to its popular Cruiser line is the all new 415 IPS Sport Yacht with the explosive performance and outstanding handling that characterises this fine marque. Cruiser floor plans are spacious with plenty of seating, a cockpit wet bar for entertaining and easy access to the cabin and foredeck. Below deck Monterey’s class and sophistication are unparalleled with cherrywood joinery, cedar lined lockers and granitecoat surfaces - in harmony with superb galley features, practical heads and luxurious sleeping quarters. Motor Boats Monthly, commenting on value and build quality, said “……. the outright bargain of the bunch must be the Monterey. While this may not come as a surprise, given it’s the cheapest of our quartet, value for money is about much more than just a low price. This boat delivers great build and some ‘best in class’ features.”.... “making the entire Monterey range that rarest of boating beasts - one that is cheaper than you think” Come and look over our MONTEREY demonstrators at Hamble Point Marina!

DID you know that Great Britain’s Olympic classes sailing team (Skandia Team GBR) is the World’s top performing sailing team? At the Beijing Olympics Britain’s sailors won six medals, four gold; one silver and one bronze. They are now preparing for London 2012 and are keen to do as well as they did in China but there’s lots of competition waiting in the wings as they battle it out for the 22 British places available at the home Olympic and Paralympic games. The next breed of sailing stars are stepping up into senior level racing and pushing the more seasoned sailors hard for their tickets to the games. So where’s all the new talent coming from? It’s you guys at your sailing clubs! There are more than 900 young sailors training in the RYA’s Junior and Youth squads around the country and a further 10,000 sailors racing and race training in RYA Junior class dinghies or boards at Team15 or Volvo RYA Champions Clubs. The RYA’s Volvo Youth and Junior Squad sailors, have been working hard this year and it’s not just the Ben Ainslie’s and Sarah Ayton’s (maybe Dempsey?!) who are top in the World. Junior windsurfer, 15-yearold Kieran Martin, went to the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August and won a bronze medal while 18-year-old Izzy Hamilton won the
World Youth RS: X windsurfing title for the second year in a row in October – pretty impressive! In the dinghies Britain’s young sailors have been busy too, winning the under 16 girls and boys world titles in the Topper, and the world title in the double-handed RS Feva. And just to add to that our young Mirror sailors picked up gold at the European Championships in the boys and girls classes too. We also collected the second best nation prize at youth sailing’s top event, the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships, so you can see how much talent there is waiting in the wings! In total our junior and youth sailors have picked up 19 medals at world and European level just this year!
Want to be part of it? Racing is great fun. You meet loads of people who love sailing just like you and plenty of coaches who will help you learn how to make your boat or board go as fast as you possibly can. Whether you want to make it to the Olympics one day or just have fun and improve your sailing, the RYA’s racing programmes are worth checking out. Visit the RYA website for more information www.rya.org.uk/ racing or ask the RYA for a copy of the Youth Racing Handbook on 0845 345 0400. Left: Bronze medalist, Keiran Martin of Britain smiles, after the victory ceremony of the boys’ Techno 293 boys’s windsurfer at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) on Aug 25, 2010 held at the National Sailing Center. Meticulously researched, this popular almanac contains a wealth of information presented in an easy to find, quick reference manner for practical on-board use. The Reeds PBO Small Craft Almanac covers the whole of the UK and Ireland and the west coast of Europe from Denmark all the way to Gibraltar. The Reeds PBO Small Craft Almanac contains a wide range of information from Secondary port differences, Tide tables, tidal streams and tidal gates, to over 2500 waypoints, Radio data, Weather information and IALA buoyage.
THE Day Skipper handbook – Motor, has been written as a companion to the RYA Motor Cruising Day Skipper Course. Authored by motor mariner master Jon Mendez, the book provides a detailed guide to the practical elements of motor boating and covers topics like boat handling, anchoring, going to sea, man overboard techniques, passage planning and weather. Typical of RYA publications, the pages are filled with helpful illustrations to help the reader picture every technique and procedure taught. To celebrate the recent launch of the book, Jon Mendez is offering one lucky reader and a chosen guest the chance to win a day’s tuition with him out on the water. To enter the competition, simply purchase a copy of the book from the RYA’s site and you’ll be entered in to the prize draw. Copies cost just £14.99 and are available here: www.rya.org.uk/shop. The competition closes on 31 January 2011.
Wooden Boatbuilding THE first title in an exclusive new series of books about traditional boats and traditional seamanship. Wooden boats didn’t disappear with the invention of GRP. Building them is still a classic craft that attracts people with a keen interest in traditional boats, as well as professional craftsmen, DIY boatbuilders and modelmakers. Thoroughly accessible to the amateur, Wooden Boatbuilding takes a unique approach to this timeless activity, using modern methods, materials and techniques to accomplish classic boat construction and restoration. Topics covered include: • Drawing up plans • The strengths and weaknesses of timber • Types of wooden hull • Framing, planking and caulking • Boatbuilding courses and regulations Beautifully illustrated with detailed watercolour illustrations, as well as closeup photographs and step-by-step diagrams, Wooden Boatbuilding is an invaluable guide for anyone building their own wooden boat.
Jean-François Garry and his wife Martine run a traditional boatyard and chandlery in France. Their boat plans and kits are particularly popular with amateur boatbuilders.

EASY TO USE • Pre Connect the clip to your A2 Buoy with a Carabiner. • Push the Clip over the tight anchored rope in one smooth push. • Start your motors and drive towards the anchor rope at about 1700 RPM keeping the anchor ball and rope on the side of your boat. • It is suggested if you have a Cleat on the “Hip” or centre side of your Gunwhale, get the rope to there and give it a quick loop around the cleat so that the rope does not pop over the edge of the hull. • Drive away from the buoy and where the anchor was. This will pull the anchor straight up off of the bottom. • When you see the buoy “Dip & Pop” that means the chain and anchor have fully been retrieved. Not even enough time to have a sip of that ice cold Beverage you just got out of the cooler. • Turn the bow toward the anchor rope and idle over there while your one of your Fantastic Mates brings in the rope until they have the anchor pulled in the boat. • Take the Griffin Clip in one hand and the rope in the other, push it back over the single rod in the middle that you just put it over a few minutes ago and pull it back through. • Always Leave the Griffin Clip Attached to your A1 or A2 Buoy for future Retrievals, no more moving parts.
