AFTER more than 6,000 miles alone at sea, Poland's Zbigniew Gutkowski on Operon Racing and Britain's Chris ‘CSM’ Stanmore-Major on Spartan finished the third ocean sprint of the VELUX 5 OCEANS within 40 seconds of one another. Gutek took second place crossing the finish line in Punta del Este, Uruguay with CSM taking third place. Gutek completed the leg from Wellington in New Zealand in 25 days, 17 hours and 10 minutes, he sailed 6,828 nautical miles at an average speed of 11.1 knots. CSM did it in 25 days, 17 hours, 10 minutes and 40 seconds, sailing 6,767 nautical miles at an average speed of 11 knots.

Bowled over FORMER winners were reunited to celebrate the coveted Gold Roman Bowl that goes to the fastest boat on handicap in Britain’s favourite and biggest yacht race.

in 1979 on Blizzard was joined by Julian Everitt who designed and built the yacht Green Onion for his late wife Julia Dane, the second female winner back in 1982.

Robin Aisher, Admiral of the Island Sailing Club and winner in 1985 on Yeoman XXV swapped memories of the race with Peter Morton who won in 1984, 1986 and 2001.

Also there were John McIntosh who won in 1998 on Dynamite and the Rogers family, who won three times in 2002, 2003 and 2006 with their previous family yacht Rosina of Beaulieu.

Sailors come from all over the UK and mainland Europe and from as far away as the USA to sail the 50 nautical mile course around the Island.

Starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the fleet races west to The Needles, around St Catherine's Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy, and then the fleet heads back into the Solent

to the finish line at Cowes.

Facts and stats

the exhibition celebrating the first 80 years

THE Round the Island Race was first established in 1931.

2011 Race marks the 80th year of this iconic race being held.

The race starts and finishes in Cowes, Isle of Wight, the centre of British yachting.

The current monohull race record was set by Mike Slade (ICAP Leopard) in 2008 at 3.53.05.

The multihull race record still stands at Francis Joyon’s 2001 time of 3.08.29. Francis will be back on the start line in 2011 skippering IDEC. The race embraces first timers, families, amateurs and professionals competing at the highest level.

2010’s Race had 1,754 entries and 1,607 finished. This is the highest ever recorded number of finishers.

THE 80-year-old race has also made history off the water.

THE “Round the Island in 80 Years’ Exhibition was officially launched from J.P. Morgan’s Great Hall in London on 1 March when organisers revealed that a long lost photo archive has been unearthed.

A photograph from the 1932 Race was found framed on the wall of a Cowes-based photographer leading to the re-discovery of the Kirk of Cowes archive and the unfolding of a fascinating story.

William Umpleby Kirk lived in Cowes, Isle of Wight from 1870 to 1928. He captured the first perfect

image of Queen Victoria’s yacht, earning him a Royal Patronage.

After his death, his son Edgar carried on the family name and captured images of the Race in the 1930’s and the exhibition has brought their archive back to life.

As well as featuring the images and stories of sporting, political and sailing legends who have competed in the race, the exhibition maintains the ethos of ‘A Race for all’ by showing the memories and pictures of the everyday sailors who make this race so unique.

Karren May, the photography archivist has managed the research

and production of the Exhibition.

It involved digging deep into the archives of many celebrated photographers including Beken of Cowes, Kirk of Cowes and Eileen Ramsay, looking back through 80 years of images, including glass plates.

The exhibition will next be shown on the Isle of Wight at the Quay Arts Gallery from 14 to 19 June and in the Race Village, Cowes Yacht Haven from 24 to 26 June over the race weekend.

Exhibition images are available to buy, with proceeds donated to the official race charity, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

NEWS IN BRIEF Plymouth’s UK first PLYMOUTH Race Week will stage the UK’s first open mixed sportsboat handicap championship at the Royal Western Yacht Club regatta from 7 – 10 July. The new event is aimed at boosting numbers of entrants to the race week, sponsored by Barratt Homes.

Yacht owners have been downsizing over recent years to get their racing kicks more cheaply and the tough economic climate is making conventional yacht racing numbers diminish at all major regattas. The mixed sportsboat course will guarantee an exciting start and challenging racing regardless of class entries.

Mooring takes shape THE £3.2 million development phase at Roydon Marina Village, Essex, is almost complete and will offer narrow boat and leisure cruisers the largest berthing location in the South East and the first on the River Stort for 100 years. The marina will use state of the art IT to manage the facility in the Lee Valley Park.

Early bird offers SAILORS are being encouraged to sign up online for this year’s Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series being held at Clyde Cruising Club from 27 - 30 May. Ocean challengers Southampton boat show sponsor, PSP, is moving two ocean rowing boats competing in the 3,100 mile Woodvale Indian Ocean Race from Australia to Mauritius.

Captain Calamity capsizes – again

NEWS IN BRIEF Riding the airwaves SOUTH coast radio station, Wave 105, has teamed up with the two-day music festival, RIBFEST, as media partner with the aim of promoting the event. RIBFEST, sponsored by Skua RIBs, is a musical addition to the RIBEX boat show held at Cowes Yacht Haven, Isle of Wight, on 13-15 May.

Happy returns

International line up NINETEEN Swan 42s from 13 countries line up for the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup – claimed to be the ultimate sailing contest among amateur competitors.

The five top finishers from the inaugural 2009 event received automatic berths for this year’s competition from 10 - 17 September which is sponsored

by Rolex. The race will be sailed on Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay.

Chart updates A NEW BlueChart update for the fast-approaching boating season is available from Garmin, the satellite navigation manufacturer. The BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision, replace the previous 2010.5 version and provide up – to – date worldwide coverage of marine charts.

Classic regatta THE dates of the next Classic Channel Regatta are June 25 to July 2.

The regatta will follow the popular and successful course of the last regatta, starting in Dartmouth, then sailing to Paimpol and on to St Peter Port.

In Dartmouth there will be two days of racing in Start Bay on Saturday and Sunday before a Parade of Sail and the start of the Classic Channel Race to Paimpol on Monday afternoon.

Plans for the Round Brehat Island Race off Paimpol on Wednesday are for a morning race followed by a lunchtime picnic on the quay at Loguivy (on the mainland opposite Brehat) before an afternoon race back to Paimpol.

From Paimpol there will be the passage race up to St Peter Port on Friday and the Classic Round Sark

Race on the final Saturday. The regatta will be rounded off with a prizegiving party at the historic Castle Cornet at the entrance to the harbour.

The Round Brehat Race, the Paimpol to St Peter Port Passage Race, and the Round Sark Race will, together, form the new ‘Ronde des Iles’ (Dance of the Islands) Challenge of the Yacht Club Classique of France.

There are already almost 60 yachts pre-registered organisers are anticipating a record entry. So far 34 are British, 21 French and 2 Belgian. Most have taken part in one or more previous regattas.

Flying start for challenge THE Little Britain Challenge Cup’s new event, the Little Britain Laser SB3 Challenge, which will take place on 3 - 4 June at Cowes, Isle of Wight, has already attracted a shoal of enquiries from sailors in the construction industry.

The new weekend event will be run in conjunction with Pelican Racing and optional boat charter, picnic lunch and informal evening supper will be part of the package. Entries

are expected to open this month.

The June Challenge will be followed later in the year by big brother, the Little Britain Challenge Cup, which takes place from Thursday 8 until Sunday 11 September, also in Cowes.

The three day regatta attracts a large cross section of organisations and individuals involved in building.

Powerboat launch sets motorsport buzzing MORE than 80,000 people saw Powerboat P1’s new race boat, the P1-28SS, make its European debut at Autosport International in Birmingham.

The revolutionary powerboat was a big hit at the four-day show at the NEC with both trade visitors from the motorsport industry and the public.

Reigning P1 SuperStock champion John Wilson, who also picked up the title of URS Classic Formula Ford 2000, B Class, champion last year, and Team Flying Sparks, SuperStock

Rookie Team of 2010, are among the first to place an order for the P1-28SS. P1’s commercial director, James Durbin says: “When you’re racing with the same boat, same engine and same performance, the only difference between winning and losing is pilot skill and competitive spirit on every course.”

This year’s P1 SuperStock Championship will include events in Cornwall, Jersey Plymouth and Lymington, with the champions being crowned in Liverpool in September.

A SAILOR dubbed Captain Calamity after wrecking his 20-foot catamaran while attempting to surf Britain's biggest wave capsized his new boat on its maiden voyage.

Glenn Crawley, 55, flipped his previous catamaran 13 times when he tried to ride the giant Cribbar wave off Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall.

Tread carefully as you climb back on board PLEASURECRAFT insurer Navigators & General has reminded boat owners to carry out simple checks before they get back on the water to avoid claims.

The severe winter is likely to have caused more undetected damage this year.

The company experiences an increase in claims in March and April as boats are launched or when owners return to find their boats have suffered damage during the winter.

N&G have seen a number of

sinking claims caused by something as simple as failing to replace a through hull fitting or re-attach an internal hose.

James Roberts Head of Navigators & General said: “The onus is on the boat owner to maintain their vessel to a seaworthy condition and ensure ongoing maintenance is completed.

“It is also important to remember that insurance cannot compensate for lack of maintenance and will not cover damage caused as a result of wear and tear.”

Ten simple checks  Check all water carrying pipes for splits or leaks.

 Do not assume anything will be checked or replaced, if in doubt ask

 Have a yearly pre-season machinery maintenance check, by a boat engineer.

 Check all hoses, skin fittings, through hull fittings and hose clips.

 Agree a launch date in advance and arrange access to the boat if you cannot be there in person.

 Check, and tape rigging split pins or securing bolts and guard rails

 Do not start engines until all basic checks have been completed, including opening cooling water sea cocks.  Check fuel or gas lines and cables have not been trapped whilst stowing gear.

 Ensure fire extinguishers, distress flares and lifejackets are still in date and adequate for your boat. Ensure navigation equipment is on board, up to date and working  Check sails for signs of vermin damage or rot.

Common problems ■ Flooring, steps and handles not being properly re-attached after servicing.

■ Split pipes that only show themselves hours after a boat is launched.

■ Forgetting to return crucial safety and navigation equipment to the boat.

■

Through hull fittings not being replaced or hoses not properly re-connected, which can lead to sinking.

■ Rigging not securely attached after the mast is put in or securing pins not fastened or taped over for security, potentially leading to a dismasting.

■ Not checking engines are fully re-commissioned, which can let you down at a crucial moment or be damaged when started.

■ Underwater gear or log may be damaged on slings or strops when lifted

£3 million better than gutting fish JUST a year after they were discovered singing for beer in a Cornish harbour pub, Port Isaac's shanty-singing Fisherman's Friends have a gold-selling album and have just signed contracts worth over £3 million.

The nine-man group of fishermen had sung for locals for 15 years until being discovered by record producer Rupert Christie while on holiday in Port Isaac.

Now they have a million pound contract with Universal Music and are to be the new faces of the Young's Seafood brand in a multi-million pound TV advertising deal.

They also won the Good Tradition Award at the BBC Radio 2 folk awards.

"It beats gutting fish on a freezing winter night!" said group leader John Cleave.

Westerly owners break records A RECORD 194 members attended the Westerly Owners’ Association annual meeting, arriving in Poole from all over the country as well as the Netherlands and the Channel Isles.

They handed in 494 out-of-date flares for disposal – by far the biggest total the RNLI’s Lifeboat College had ever had to deal with.

Chris Jennings from Legion Security, part of the OCS Group, which runs the flare disposal facility on the RNLI site said: “We’ve been collecting out-of-date flares for nearly a year and had reached a total of 3,281. But this is by far the largest number we’ve accepted in one day.”

He continued: “We recognise that it is important for anyone

going to sea to have up to date and safe equipment as well as a safe and proper way to dispose of time expired pyrotechnics.

NEARLY 30 years ago thousands lined the harbourside to wave off the Royal Navy to do battle in the Falklands.

In 2011, on a chilly Saturday February morning, there was no better demonstration of how things have changed.

It may have been a lone warship.

The crowd was enthusiastic but not huge. It was a grey winter’s day when few pleasure craft were on the water. But it was still a proud few minutes.

In bygone years the event would have been watched by dozens of grey painted battleships, carriers, cruisers destroyers, frigates, submarines, support ships and auxiliaries.

Now there was an aircraft carrier already without a role, one or two destroyers and a frigate or two, the Ministry of Defence police launches, the Gosport ferries, a couple of tugs

and our small sailing boat.

The first we knew of the short story we were about to share was when Warship York requested permission of the Queen’s Harbourmaster on channel 11 to sound its horn in salute of friends and families assembled on the round tower at the entrance to Portsmouth harbour.

The simple request to make this last touching link between sailors and their loved ones was of course granted.

Similar scenes have been repeated at the historic naval port for centuries. A helicopter flying overhead dangling a white ensign was a reminder that this was the 21st century.

It was all over in the time it took to see off a mug of tea. HMS York had merged with the mist over the Solent. The hardiest of the families lingered on the tower until she was no more than a smudge.

Few others had noticed as the type 42 destroyer set off to patrol the South Atlantic. But for those who did, a touch of emotion remained.

And while we live in an age of instant and mass communication the sequel was equally interesting.

York’s planned patrol was routine and expected to be peaceful. Its crew can maintain contact with home rather than vanish across the high seas for months or even years as once they did.

The next we heard of HMS York was that instead of being in mid Atlantic en route for the Falklands, she was at Malta, delivering medical supplies and helping the evacuation of Libya.

Economic cuts means that Britannia might have difficulty ruling the waves but the men and women of the Royal Navy, and their loved ones, remain ready to do their duty as Nelson expected.

Dockyard praise CHATHAM’S Historic Dockyard won high praise from government ministers who visited the trust that runs it.

Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport and John Penrose MP, Minister for Tourism and Heritage were shown the work of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust and its heritage based business model.

The trust was founded on the strategy of “preservation through re-use” which has led the dockyard to become widely recognised as the best example of imaginative cultural regeneration.

During his tour of the dockyard, Jeremy Hunt said; “The Historic Dockyard Chatham is a fantastic example of a site that has encouraged philanthropy, developed innovative partnerships between local and national institutions such as the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum, and also involved the local community in its plans.”

Southampton dredging THE trailing suction dredger UKD Bluefin will dredge the main channels, swinging grounds and berths in Southampton water and the rivers Itchen and Test for about six weeks from 4 March.

Bed levelling will be carried out by the bed levelling tenders UKD Sealion and UKD Seahorse in berths and channels until approximately the end of April.

Mariners are requested to reduce speed when passing dredgers and should expect to pass the dredgers at any time between the upper reaches of Southampton Water and the Nab disposal area.

The dredgers will maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 12 and mariners can request

movement information from Southampton VTS on Channel 12.

How the Mary Rose will look THE Mary Rose Trust has released a new illustration of how the new Mary Rose Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will look when it opens to the public in the autumn next year.

Previously released interior images show the museum as it will look in 2016 when the conservation process is complete but the ship hull is about to enter the final phase of conservation as the sprays are turned off later this year and

visitors will have a unique look into the complexities of preserving the Tudor Warship.

The 17 years of treatment to conserve the ship’s timbers by spraying with polyethylene glycol comes to an end this year but it will still take another five years to dry out.

Head of Conservation, Professor Mark Jones said, “Our visitors in 2012 will be able to see this final phase of conservation by looking into a

hotbox and seeing both the ship and the process for removing the 100 tons of water the timbers now contain.

“This should all be gone by 2016, when we can take away the hotbox and reveal the ship completely. But even when she is fully dried out, the building’s temperature, light and humidity will be very carefully controlled to ensure that all the artefacts are preserved in perpetuity”.

Next year will mark 30 years since television showed the wreck of the Tudor warship break the surface of the Solent along with 19,000 artefacts.

Warrior on the move HMS Warrior 1860 set sail for new horizons at nearby Gunwharf Quays – not the 150-year-old iron-hulled warship but a 12-foot schematic drawing of the famous ship.

The magnificent artwork by Stephen Ortega depicting the interior of the ship has been re-housed from the offices at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to the ‘Warrior’ boardroom at Gunwharf Quays, as part of the

partnership work between the centre and tourist attraction.

Ortega was a student at the Bournemouth & Poole College of

Art and Design when he created the picture and it is known to have either been commissioned by or donated to the Maritime Trust, who in turn donated it to the Warrior Preservation Trust in 1987.

Warrior represents a key moment in the evolution of warship design, between Nelson’s Victory of 1759, and Dreadnought in 1906.

She was the first ship to combine an iron hull, steam propulsion

and armour plating, and when launched was the largest and most powerful warship in the world. Her revolutionary design marked the start of a new era in naval architecture and maritime strategy.

The Ortega painting holds a special significance to the Gunwharf centre as from 1904 to 1924 HMS Warrior was moored as a training hulk to HMS Vernon which was previously on the site.

Show chiefs blame economy MARINE Industry Events, organisers of the 2011 Liverpool Boat Show, blamed the economic climate in the leisure marine sector for cancellation of the inaugural event.

MIE cited slow exhibitor takeup for the show planned for April and said the long term potential for a major boat show in Liverpool needed to be protected.

The show was launched 18 months ago and enjoyed strong support from many of the major marine brands.

But from November last year market sentiment about the economic outlook deteriorated rapidly affecting the confidence of boat manufacturers, dealers, smaller retailers and traders.

According to MIE the trend accelerated sharply in late January with contracted exhibitors citing a

commercially disastrous London Boat Show as the reason for withdrawing from Liverpool.

Rob Mackenzie, Managing Director of MIE, said: “The city council and its corporate partners, British Waterways, Liverpool Marina, Albert Dock Liverpool and the local sailing community have worked very hard to support this project.

“More than anything else, we’ve cancelled the show to protect the integrity of what we know to be the enormous long term potential for a major Boat Show in Liverpool.”

Councillor Wendy Simon, cabinet member for culture and tourism, said: “We have the building blocks in place to stage other exciting maritime events and to revive the Boat Show in the future when the national economic outlook recovers”

Discussions between LCC and other local partners have now started on whether an alternative event can be staged, but MIE will have no further involvement in this process.

Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision, said: “Strong foundations for future large maritime events have been laid.”

Show figures boost industry THE caravan, motorhome, camping and outdoor industry received a boost as Ocean Media Group’s flagship event, the Boat & Caravan Show bucked the exhibition trend.

Nearly 87,000 visitors attended the 50th anniversary show – a four per cent increase – and the new Outdoor Leisure Show attracted 35,240 visitors. More than 25 per cent of exhibitors rebooked on site for 2012.

Royal Southern unveils busy programme FOR a busy year preceding the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s 175th Anniversary in 2012, the Club has announced a packed racing programme for 2011 that includes hosting a number of high profile national championships.

The Summer Series regattas will be back in a format that allows for maximum racing on the water with minimal impact on other events. In

May, June, July and September, an entire weekend will be dedicated to IRC, Sportsboat, One-design and White Sail racing. Any class that can muster more than eight boats will be given their own class start.

The Southern has been selected to manage National Championships for the Laser SB3s, Beneteau 40.7s, J/92s and J/105s.

Little ship could be saved by lottery THE last "little ship" to leave Dunkirk as part of the 1940 allied rescue operation and which spent the next 60 years rotting in Torquay harbour, could be saved by a £320,000 Lottery grant.

The 40-foot Lady Cable motor launch transported a total of 630 soldiers from the Dunkirk beaches.

Now the Lady Cable Trust has been told its bid for Lottery funding could be successful.

Built by Morgan Giles in 1924, Lady Cable was the only Torquay boat to take part in the Dunkirk evacuation and is now in a very bad state of repair. Fully restored she would be used for educational purposes. www.ladycabletrust.co.uk

A right Royal blessing LIFEBOAT naming ceremonies are always significant occasions, but few have attracted as much attention as the one that took place at Trearddur Bay lifeboat station, Anglesey.

The world’s media mingled with more than 1,000 RNLI supporters outside the lifeboat station as volunteers waited to greet two very special guests: Prince William and Catherine Middleton, who are due to be married on April 29.

As an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot based at nearby RAF Valley, Prince William was invited to name a new Atlantic 85 lifeboat that is now being used by his fellow sea rescuers at Trearddur Bay. Speaking at the naming ceremony, he acknowledged the relationship that had developed over the years between his squadron and the lifeboat crew.

Other speakers included Marilyn Archer from the RNLI Leominster Branch, who handed over the lifeboat into the care of the charity. She was representing the Herefordshire volunteers and supporters who raised funds for the lifeboat, along with local fundraisers. She said: ‘It’s amazing to think that the pennies and pounds from our events and collections, together with the efforts of the people of Herefordshire, will now be saving priceless lives.’

NEWS IN BRIEF Called to sick crewman The volunteer crew of Shoreham RNLI lifeboat launched on 24 February following a reports that a fisherman had fallen ill aboard a vessel 12 miles south of Hove. The Tamar class allweather lifeboat Enid Collett launched at 7.20pm and, when the crew located the fishing boat, it was thought a 60-yearold man aboard had suffered a heart attack. But it emerged the fisherman had fallen on the deck of the boat earlier that day and suffered suspected broken ribs. The lifeboat crew got him aboard and gave him oxygen before powering back to the lifeboat station where he was taken to hospital.

The Atlantic 85 is the most advanced inshore lifeboat produced by the RNLI. She can reach speeds of up to 35 knots and is fitted with a

radar system, radio direction- finding equipment and a sophisticated chart plotter to aid search and rescue operations, particularly in low visibility.

She can carry more crew and casualties than her predecessor.

After the lifeboat was named, Christopher Pritchard, Senior Helmsman, called for three cheers

for the special guests before taking part in a demonstration of the lifeboat's capabilities.

He said: ‘There was a lot of pressure to get everything right in front of our royal guests and the public, but the boat was great and the crew are all highly trained – I can rely on them during a difficult rescue, so I knew there’d be no problem today.’

TYNEMOUTH RNLI volunteers rescued three fishermen on 25 February after their boat’s propeller became entangled in ropes leaving them stranded at sea. At 11.20am the Tynemouth RNLI all-weather lifeboat Spirit of Northumberland launched following a distress call. The lifeboat arrived at Marsden Bay five minutes after launching.

The stranded vessel and three crew are towed to South Shields.

Over that time, almost 40 clubs have benefitted from support of grants averaging £1,000 each, enabling them to set up a wide range of projects from recycling schemes to awareness of wildlife and biodiversity.

A slight change of format this year will see a top prize of £5,000 being awarded to Helensburgh

Sailing Club from Argyll and Bute, for a fantastic, innovative and comprehensive project to capture rainwater in containers using recycled materials. The rainwater will then be used to flush toilets and wash down boats – saving money on the supply and use of treated water for non-drinking uses.

READING the article about Calypso in the February edition of All at Sea reminded me of the hard work that went into building the greener Contessa 32 last year.

She was the first entry to be processed for this year’s JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race and because of her ecocredentials and beautiful design, is still grabbing the headlines.

She embodies The Green Blue’s approach to sustainability, definitely not burn bright and fade but focused, high impact and all about making lasting change - much like the environmental improvements we’ve helped many sailing and yacht clubs to make over the last five years.

We have had so many requests for help with sustainability from clubs that for the past two months I have been busy putting together our new Green Guide for Clubs to help them get started.

The guide is a really easy but informative read, packed full of top tips, quick wins and case studies of clubs that have already made environmental changes and are enjoying the benefits.

Launched at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace, London, by Vendée Globe Skipper and The Green Blue Ambassador, Mike Golding (14.45 RYA Stand Panorama Hall), the Guide covers the current environmental issues facing clubs and offers practical solutions on how to get started.

From setting up a recycling scheme and running a greener regatta to oil storage regulations and saving energy, the new guide, aimed at sailing, yacht and motor clubs, will also demonstrate how to save valuable funds that could be better spent on more events or new equipment for members.

Also at this year’s RYA Volvo Dinghy Show was the presentation of the Volvo Eco Challenge Awards

by Volvo Eco Challenge Ambassador Chris Packham.

IT WAS that time of year again.

Powerboat racing’s crème de la crème gathered at the De Vere Hotel in Bournemouth for the RYA Powerboat Racing Ceremony.

With more than 200 people, many of them familiar faces, it’s like one big family party and a real testament to the skills of the powerboat racing champions as many of them return year after year.

In 2010 UK powerboat racers secured 58 national champions, seven world titles, 24 national records and 12 new world records.

More than 40 presentations were made throughout the evening, including some very special awards.

Among the champions were Mark Williams, World Formula 4 Champion, Jordan Muckles, three times World Formula Future Champion in parallel slalom, Manoeuvring and Class 4, James Bushell, World IJSBA Pro-Am Runabout Stock Champion who also received three British Jet Sport

Titles in Runabout GP, Runabout Stock 4-Stroke and Runabout Limited.

Sarah Treseder the RYA Chief Executive joined John Puddifoot and me on stage to make the presentations. It was refreshing to see the head of the RYA genuinely interested and excited about the powerboating fraternity. We are very much the minority in RYA world but Sarah is destined to change that!

On behalf of the UK Offshore Boating Association the RYA Awarded John Iddon the UKOBA Sword of Honour and Lifetime achievement Award – extremely well deserved.

Circuit Racing’s Julian Codling who picked up awards for National Circuit Outboard Champion, Outboard Sprint O:250 Champion as well as a staggering world and national O250 Record at 112.27mph, was also awarded the BJ Noone Award.

Burt Noone Junior lost his life taking part in an OSY National Championship in 1995. So that something positive could come out of his death his parents decided to award a trophy in memory of

some shops might be offering deals on kit and some simply encouraging current windsurfers to bring a friend with the friend sailing for free.

Some will also be running competitions for different levels of experience while others may be offering incentive schemes to encourage current windsurfers to become instructors.

There will be heaps going on and if there was ever a time to step on to a board it is now.

National Windsurfing Week 2011 was due to be officially launched

by Skandia Team GBR RS:X star and Olympic bronze medallist Nick Dempsey at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace, London.

Last year a quarter of our all windsurfing centres in Britain got involved in National Windsurfing Week.

As soon as a centre decides to get involved it needs to let the RYA know so it can be added to the map on the website. The map is already looking pretty clustered.

Unlike many other nominated ‘weeks’ that are organised for commercial reasons, National Windsurfing Week was the brainchild of a group of windsurfing enthusiasts, led by Sean Blackmore and Phil Luckhurst, purely motivated by their love of the sport.

The idea was born out of a discussion on an online windsurfing forum when they grew tired of listening to people complaining about how windsurfing was going down the pan. They decided to do something about it.

From there it developed into a major movement to inject new life into windsurfing. Although this year has seen Sean take a backseat because of work commitments, the RYA with Boards magazine and Spartan Wetsuits have taken on the mantle of managing the website and helping centres and other participating groups promote what they are up to for the week.

Some centres have come up with some really innovative ways to involving many RYA centres, clubs raise awareness of their National and Team15 teams.

London and back – via the world having had no experience in Ocean rowing. But you could see in her eyes she was going to make the attempt, whatever the advice. Yet you also knew she would do her homework and was not in the business of failure.

On August 3, 2009, Sarah stepped ashore in Mauritius. Her journey across the Indian Ocean from Perth, Australia, had taken her 124 days and she had rowed her boat, Serendipity, or “Dippers” as she became known, a distance of 4,180 miles.

Aged only 23 years, it was incredible feat of endurance and a testament to her indomitable spirit. And where does this motivation come from?

Sarah’s dad, Derek Outen, died in 2006 of rheumatoid arthritis and Sarah makes no excuse for citing

FOR nearly three years I have been tipping a young lady from Rutland to be one, if not the, greatest female adventurer this country has ever produced.

If only it were possible to buy shares in a person, I would be on to a winner with Sarah Outen.

Our paths first crossed when she volunteered to be one of my crew when I sailed around Great Britain in 2007. At the time, aged only 21, Sarah was a major component in my team.

As strong as a (lady) Ox, bright as a button but, above all, so completely focussed on her tasks, she was a ballof energy which, at times, kept my project on the rails.

She talked then of her ambition to row an Ocean, the Indian Ocean.

Older, supposedly wiser heads, questioned her pedigree, especially

her father as the inspiration for her adventures.

“If he could live with the pain of that terrible disease for so many years, then who am I to complain about a little discomfort on my journey,” said Sarah.

It seems that ocean rowing is fast becoming as commonplace as polar expeditions these days with sponsors, the public and the mainstream media suffering from polar or rowing fatigue. You need only open your Sunday papers to see another Union flag being hoisted at some Pole or mountain summit.

Differentiating yourself or your project is getting increasingly harder for adventurers. But Sarah doesn’t set out to chase headlines.

To assume that is to not know Sarah.

She has that Shackleton Spirit that seems to genetically embed itself in some of us Brits.

It is the spirit of adventure that drives her, not column inches. So what next for Sarah? She already holds two Guinness records for her row across the Indian Ocean; the first, and only, woman to row across the India Ocean solo.

Sarah has decided to think outside of the box and has, in a delightful Phileas Fogg fashion, decided to name her new adventure, “London2London; via the world”.

Using only human power, her adventure will begin by kayaking down the Thames to France. From there, Sarah will cycle across Europe and Asia.

She will then kayak through the Japanese islands before starting her first major row, from Japan to the USA, west to east, across the northern Pacific.

Having cycled across America, she

will then begin the last leg of her journey, another row, west to east, from the USA to the UK across the northern Atlantic.

It took me less than two minutes to write Sarah’s route. It will take her an estimated two and a half years to complete her journey. The statistics are huge and are matched only by the logistics.

Sarah’s adventure begins at London Bridge on April 1. No joke!

AT the annual RYA conference for instructors and examiners we had a number of interesting talks but it was GPS reliability that interested me most.

I am aware of the need for power, refraction of signals through the ionosphere, failure on the part of satellites from time to time and the good old nonsense of erroneous information being put into the system.

What I needed reminding of though was: ■ The power of the transmitter on the satellite is only 100 watts with a range of just 20 kms.

■ Stars can emit a burst of power which has swamped all GPS receivers worldwide.

■ GPS signals can be spoofed to give false information.

■ All telecommunications depend on GPS signals.

■ Solar flares can disrupt the system

seriously. This will affect GMDSS as well as radar and gyro compasses.

Added to what we have been reading about cyber warfare in the papers, the lesson from all this is that we should keep up a plot on paper charts and consider an alternative system. Apparently the Americans are diversifying into eLORAN as are a number of other countries.

Turn off cocks AND on the subject of fire, if you had a minor fire in the engine compartment would you have a means of turning off the raw water inlet seacock without opening up the access hatch?

On my last boat I had three seacocks in the engine compartment, raw water for the engine and two cockpit drains.

I got round the problem in two ways: I wrapped up all the flexible pipework with fire proof material to a level well above the waterline and also had exterior handles attached to the seacocks so that I could close everything off in an emergency.

I HAVE just invested in a Standard Horizon HX 851 hand held VHF/ DSC set, and am most impressed with it (no, I have no financial interest).

It is waterproof, floats, has a built in GPS, a strobe light and actually has a DSC alarm capability. Much will depend on the height of the antenna for range but in my view, this radio is a real step forward.

IF you have your boat out of the water it is a good time to check over your fire equipment.

I was on a boat last season which did not have an automatic fire extinguisher. The hole through which one was meant to squirt a depressant was positioned in the companionway access.

The only type of fire extinguishers on board were similar to the one in the photo.

If a powder fire extinguisher is stowed in the horizontal position,

the contents can solidify and if not given a good shake every now and again could discharge a quantity of useless gas when the lever is depressed rather than the powder.

The lesson is to ensure that if you are using that type of fire extinguisher in an engine compartment, make sure you can hold it vertically. Better still either have an automatic extinguisher or one with a rubber hose which can be stuck through the hole.

Spotlighting harbours around the country

Secure and convenient in an historic harbour

WE all have our different reasons for choosing where to berth our precious boats.

I would wager yours are as obscure, possibly as irrational and most probably as forgotten as mine.

No doubt that similar to many a boater, way back in the mists of time, my marina chose me rather than the other way around.

It was certainly a long time ago that I first came across Port Solent. It had only just opened – this is its 21st anniversary year – and my earliest memory is of arriving late on a Friday to join a boat for a weekend in the Solent.

Work had delayed my departure and the crew generously decided to sail up Portsmouth Harbour for a run ashore while they awaited my arrival.

It offered an easy berth and short night sail for an inexperienced crew.

Portchester creek can be a bit of a challenge in the dark even for those of us who know it well. It is easy to

think you know it all when you are so close to home. But if you think ahead and concentrate, it is interesting rather than worrying.

For me, after a two-hour drive, it offered safe parking for the weekend and a short stroll to a most acceptable pub with a choice of places to eat to suit any taste.

The shops and the restaurants and bars have grown and changed since those early days but there is certainly plenty of choice. That makes it as attractive to visitors as it was for us, especially when the children were enjoying the “are we nearly there?” stage.

If there was a blow or heavy rain they could find plenty to do searching for crabs or learning to row a dinghy.

Now there is a cinema complex and a gym on tap in addition to a huge piece of grassland that is ideal for flying kites or simply running off surplus energy.

All the attractions of Portsmouth’s historic dockyard are close by along with its other museums. And don’t

forget that the entrance to the marina is watched over by majestic Portchester Castle with its Roman and Norman architecture standing guard.

But much of this is mere window dressing. Back to the real reasons for berthing at Port Solent.

Number one has to be security. You have to negotiate a lock to get in or out. The marina team keep watch too and on one occasion rescued my boat from sinking when a seacock failed.

In fact they were so efficient they had the vessel out of the water before the engine was completely flooded or the interior ruined. If they had been a bit slower insurance might have paid for a complete new engine instead of just a new bottom end.

Well you can’t have everything!

Second is convenience. It is minutes away from the M27 and therefore the whole of the motorway network.

Some might say that the 35 or 40 minutes of hard motoring to reach the open Solent is a waste of good sailing time, In fact it is a good time to check systems and to “feel” the boat again after perhaps weeks or months away from the water. It is ideal for slowing down from motorway time to sea time.

Portsmouth also has one of the most fascinating harbours. There is always something interesting to see.

It is busy enough to remind you about rules of the road and avoiding other craft.

After 20 years with only a brief gap of a couple of seasons in Chichester harbour and with one boat bought and taken over at Port Solent, it is clear that I was the chosen one, rather than the marina.

Clubs and charters Portsmouth Harbour Yacht Club On the ground floor of the port house, the club offers in its quayside restaurant and bar. Open to all visiting yachtsmen and non-members.

Port Solent Yacht Club Port Solent yacht club welcomes both sail and powerboat enthusiasts of all levels of experience. Finding Port Solent marina By sea Entrance to the marina lock is via Porthester Lake. The entrance to Portchester Lake, which is about a mile north of the harbour entrance, is marked to the west by pile No.57 and to the east by pile No.95. The whole channel is marked by red piles to the west, numbered 57 to 74 (leave to port) and by green piles to the east running from 95 to 75. Twenty of the piles are lit by navigational lights (see chart extract).

At pile no.78 call Port Solent on VHF ch. 80 and request a lock in. Do not proceed into the lock barrel unless three green entry lights show.

By bus Every day bus 24 runs hourly between The Hard, Portsmouth and Port Solent.

Bus 11 and 11A run between Port Solent and Cosham via Tesco. Bus 57 runs from Portsmouth Hard to Warsash via Tesco where you can pick up the number 11 or 11A. (Port Solent bus stop is in front of the UCI Odeon).

By rail Portsmouth and Southsea is the nearest main line station with regular connections to Chichester, Brighton, London and Southampton. The nearest local station is Portchester and the station at Havant offers connections to London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour services. National Rail Enquiries 08457 484950.

By ferry port

Special attractions WITH the backdrop of the Boardwalk restaurants, bars and shops, Port Solent’s facilities earned the Yacht Harbour Association's highest award of Five Gold Anchors.

There is a fully serviced boat yard with storage ashore for 500 boats, 24-hour fuel, top quality showers and toilets, plus free car parking.

Further services for berth holders include free pump out, yacht brokerage, engine servicing, marine engineers, maintenance and repair specialists, sail training companies and the south coast's largest chandlery.

Other facilities include a launderette, shops and cashpoints including a 24-hour Tesco superstore nearby.

There are post boxes at the marina reception where letters and parcels can be collected. There is WiFi internet access, plus electricity and water on pontoons and bottled gas at reception. Two-day weather forecasts are posted daily The Isle of Wight is an easy day's cruise.

Local harbours offer visiting opportunities with reciprocal arrangements such as free overnight stays and fuel at cost at other Premier marinas.

Solent enjoys excellent links to the continent, the Channel Islands and to the Isle of Wight via Portsmouth ferry and hovercraft services.

By airport Solent is within easy reach of Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. Southampton and Goodwood Airports provide local, national and international flights.

Seek out a boat jumble bargain WITH money hard to come by and environmental issues to the fore, there has never been a better time to attend a Boat Jumble. Chris Chaddock, one of the UK’s most prominent jumble organisers, explains what they are all about.

FOR those who don’t know, Boat Jumbles are marine markets where you can buy new and second hand watersports-related items at huge discounts.

With more than 30 regional events throughout the UK in 2011, there is bound to be one close to you. So not only can you save fuel by staying local, reducing your carbon footprint in the process, but if you purchase any used items at one of our shows you will be helping the environment by recycling unwanted marine items and reducing landfill.

Having attended and run boat jumbles for the last 33 years I am still amazed when I meet fellow boating enthusiasts who don’t know what a boat jumble is and have never attended one.

Where have they been I ask myself?

I explain that this special sector of the marine industry is where private and trade sellers come together at

large one day “marine markets” with 50-plus stands to offer new and used boating bargains.

I tell them they’ve evolved from an annual event at Beaulieu Motor Museum to 36 regional UK shows in 2011 overseen by The Boat Jumble Association to ensure consistent high standards.

I tell them spring is one of the best times to attend a boat jumble as you will find deals on fitting out materials from stainless steel screws to antifouling, fiberglass, hardwoods, rigging, ropes, chandlery, hatches, deck fittings, outboards and general chandlery etc.

In these difficult economic times I stress attending is a must as you should save your entry fee on your first purchase and you will have a great day out soaking up all that nautical atmosphere.

Boat Jumbles have evolved from an eclectic mix of irregular marine

sales, auctions, sailing club “bring and buys” and private individuals’ garage sales all varying in size and quality into an annual coordinated industry of well run regional events promoted by the UK Boat Jumbles Association.

The shows are run by a wide range of organisers under a code of practice which ensures that they consistently offer good value for money to the public, exhibitors and organisers alike.

The catalyst was undoubtedly the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire which in 1978 in the wake of their internationally successful Beaulieu Auto Jumbles turned their attention to the marine sector and held the first ever Beaulieu Boat Jumble.

Their professional events marketing team together with a significant marketing budget and a dream location in the New Forest

close to the busy yachting Mecca of the Solent ensured that the event was a phenomenal success. Indeed growing in size and stature each year and attracting hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of attendees it soon became another international hit attracting boating people from all over Europe.

However being held only once a year meant that if you were looking for a specific part for a now obsolete boat or engine you only had one

chance per season to obtain it.

Other event organisers spotted there was a demand for more similar events around the country and the Boat Jumbles industry gradually evolved from six events per year in the early 1980’s to the 30-plus shows we have today.

We are indebted to Beaulieu Boat Jumble, which remains to this day the “Flagship” event of the Boat Jumble calendar and is always held on the last Sunday in April.

Highway code for boaters WE all know it’s great fun getting out on the water but it’s important to stay safe by making sure we don’t collide with other boats.

Luckily, there’s a highway code for the water just like for on land that isn’t too tricky to master.

Here are just some of the basics and remember boats don’t have brakes!  Keep your eyes peeled for other boats… remember to look behind you too! Keeping a proper lookout is the most important rule and it can help you to plan ahead and avoid any accidents.

It’s also important to control your speed so that you have more time to plan ahead, especially when you’re in a busy area.  Don’t panic! The rules for giving way are really easy to remember…a boat on port tack must keep clear of a boat on starboard tack.

It’s important to always be a bit cautious, so if you’re on starboard tack, always stay on guard because the other boat might not have seen you. Sometimes you might be unsure, so always assume the other boat is on starboard and keep clear.

If both boats are on the same tack, the windward boat – the boat travelling in the direction of the wind – must keep clear and give way.  Power gives way to sail.

When a boat is travelling by power - if they have an engine or even if they’re rowing or paddling, they should always give way to the boat using a sail. Obviously

there are some exceptions, so if in doubt just keep out of the way!  If you find yourself sailing on a river or narrow channel the rules are simple – stick to the right side and if you ever need to overtake another boat, make sure you leave plenty of room and keep out of its way. Easy!

REAL ales found their niche as the brewing industry consolidated and enthusiasts began producing handmade distinctly, flavoursome beers in micro breweries.

Independent gin distilling has developed with similar aficionados as a reaction to the consolidation of gin distilling into fewer companies and a similar lack of variety in flavour and character.

There are now more than 50 ‘boutique’ gins to be had – at a premium price, though.

London gin, by definition, must feature juniper plus other ‘botanicals’, coriander, orange peel cinnamon and orris root being common to virtually all of them.

Mainstream brands may have derived from hundred-year-old founding family recipes, but the family has long since disappeared into a corporate giant. Boutique gins are at the creative start line again, the recipe being an individual’s dream of what is perfection in a gin and achieved with extra, often unique, botanicals added to the usual ones.

No expense is spared in pursuit of product quality and flavour and the premium prices reflect this honourable aim.

Sipsmith, launched in 2008, is one such.

The founding enthusiasts, Fairfax Hall and Sam Galsworthy, call themselves ‘sipsmiths’ like ‘goldsmiths’ to explain the name and their passion.

Theirs is a real London gin, distilled and bottled in London at a former micro brewery in Nasmyth Road – even the address is quirky, Hammersmith, West London.

Their botanical obsession means using Macedonian juniper, Bulgarian coriander and Seville orange peel and their water is transported from the Lydwell spring, one of the Cotswold starting springs for the River Thames which flows past a block away from their door.

All distillers swear the shape of the copper still itself affects the end result. Many adore an old one. Sipsmith decided to have a new one made to their own design, London’s first new still for 190 years.

The result is smooth, 41.6 per cent abv, with full ‘proper’ gin flavour, strong juniper and a hint of liquorice and citrus.

As with all boutique gins, Sipsmith is not on sale everywhere. I bought it at Majestic for £23 and they say it is also stocked at Waitrose, Harvey Nichols and Fortnum & Mason. Worth the premium for something special at home or to take on board.

For best flavour, do not dilute too much.

Take it as a martini – or max 50:50 on the tonic.

BOUTIQUE gin distillers also have the obsession that, having made a perfect gin, it should not be let down by a less-than-perfect tonic.

Some even make their own.

Others specify a brand. All prefer you to use a fresh, small-size bottle rather than a litre.

One in favour is Fever Tree at £1.75 per 200ml ‘split’ and £2.39 for a 500ml screw-top bottle at Waitrose. It has no artificial sweeteners and natural quinine ingredients from small suppliers on the Rwanda/Congo border.

Test without any gin to taste the difference. Fever Tree say it will improve all gins, boutique or not.
