THE first weekend of April was full of drama in the VELUX 5 OCEANS as the fleet raced north through the South Atlantic. American skipper Brad Van Liew on Le Pingouin was brought to his knees after being hit in the back – by a huge flying fish. A second then ‘flew’ straight into his shoulder, leaving him battered and bruised. British skipper Chris Stanmore-Major faced a shortage of water on board Spartan. To keep weight down, CSM chose to take only 20 litres in his tanks but problems arose when his water maker was broken. After falling into the cockpit of Operon Racing, Polish skipper Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski feared he might have broken some ribs and was forced to rely on painkillers. Then the alternator broke. In a final blow the bowsprit broke, limiting the ability to fly spinnakers. On Active House, Canadian Derek Hatfield found one of his watertight compartments full with nearly 1,000 litres of water. The problem was a broken ballast tank line.

She told an audience of RNLI supporters, fundraisers and guests that she was delighted to be the patron of the Cowes Lifeboat Station Appeal. She went on to say: “The current station is a changing room, an office, a classroom, so they need this new station. All the crew are total volunteers and it is absolutely wonderful to think they are going to TURN TO PAGE 2
