Planning a river raid

ROWERS are in training for the Hamble River Raid on May 21. Tides are set for a 1.00pm start for an afternoon of power rowing and friendly family competition in aid of Hamble Sea Scouts. There are 17 Bursledon Gigs on the river and organisers are hoping for a record turnout. There could also be eight Egrets on the water as well as Langstone Cutters and the Sea Cadets themselves. Gig races will involve a Le Mans start with one minute intervals and boats will race from Hamble Quay to Bursledon and back. Jake Frith, editor of our sister magazine Sailing Today, will present the prizes. The new tea room on Hamble Quay Jake Frith front will be open and there will be a hog roast and other entertainments. www.hambleriverraid.com www.hambleriverrowing.com

EACH of the 30 young people racing on the six competing Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust yachts in this year’s Round the Island Race will be looking to sell 50 virtual race miles, before they cross the finishing line on Saturday, 25 June. The trust, the official charity of this year’s J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, aims to raise £31,500 and get six boats with eight crew members virtually Round the Island through its new ‘BUY A MILE’ fundraising initiative. Every mile purchased will move the chosen virtual yacht forward one mile and you can track each boat’s progress online. If all the miles are bought, it will enable the Trust to take another 63 young people sailing in 2012, helping them to regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer and leukemia. Miles can be purchased at different values from £10 - £50 and there is the added appeal that if you buy your mile before 1 June you could be firing the starting gun on the steps of the Royal Yacht Squadron at 5.50am on the 25 June, with the soon-to-be-announced

celebrity race starter. You can select a boat and crew member you would like to support and you can also choose to get Dame Ellen virtually round the island as she will also be joining the young people on the water again this year. For the 2011 edition of the race, Ellen will be competing on Moonspray, the Trust’s GibSea 44. Last year she had a great day on

the water with the young people from the Trust, finishing 493th overall in the ISC standing and 17th in class. She said: “It's fantastic to be able to offer 30 young people in recovery from cancer the inspirational experience of competing with up to 16,000 other sailors in Britain’s biggest one day sailing event. I hope through the ‘Buy a Mile’ fundraising we can help many more young people

in their recovery from the illness in the future”. Since J.P. Morgan Asset Management became title sponsor of the Round the Island Race £350,000 has been raised for good causes. With the Island Sailing Club and the other race partners involvement, the plan is to increase this to figure to £500,000 by the end of 2011. Around 1,700 boats and 16,000 sailors come from all over the UK and mainland Europe and from as far away as the USA to follow the 50 nautical mile course around the Island. Starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the fleet races west to The Needles, around St Catherine's Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy, and then the fleet heads back into the Solent to the finish line at Cowes. The race is the 4th largest participation sporting event in the UK. NEWS IN BRIEF Humane award A 19-year-old waitress who dived into the freezing sea at Plymouth last November to rescue a 60-yearold woman who had been swept off rocks by waves has received a Royal Humane Society award. Society secretary Dick Wilkinson said that Danielle McCourt dived without hesitation into choppy bitterly cold water putting herself in serious danger and saving the woman's life while bystanders looked on.

Challenge meet MORE than 360 adventurers travelled from all over the globe to Southampton to discover which of the ten teams competing in the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race they will represent. Three-quarters of the 489 men and women who will be taking part in the gruelling challenge met their skippers and new team mates, travelling from as far afield as Singapore, Queensland in Australia, Scotland, Finland, New York and Chile to the event at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel.

Historic powerboats on patrol

TWO historic powerboats owned by Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, HSL 102 and Sea Plane Tender 1502, joined 11 of the Royal Navy’s P2000 patrol vessels as they took to the seas last month for one of the largest squadron exercises in 25 years. The RN ships left Portsmouth Naval base in a tight formation for a series of highly complex manoeuvres. The First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope reviewed the ships and the crews. HSL 102, is the only surviving example of the 100 class high speed launch and was stationed at RAF Calshot during the Battle of Britain,

retrieving shot down airmen from the sea. Throughout the war, HSL vessels, speeding at over 40 knots, saved a total of 10,000 airmen of many nationalities. After restoration in 1996, she was re-launched by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and performed as a Royal Barge for both HRH Prince Phillip and HRH the Duke of Kent. She went on to star in the film Enigma with Kate Winslet in 2001. ST 1502 built in 1942 was a Royal Air Force craft used in the UK during and after WWII as a ferry between seaplanes and their shore bases and

also served as a rescue boat for airmen stranded in coastal waters. Taken on by British Military Powerboat Trust in the late 1990s, ST 1502 is now restored to her former glory with an impressive top speed of 20 knots. Both vessels are on display at Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and are available for charter. Peter Goodship, Chief Executive of the PNBPT, said: “These unique craft are a legacy to the heroism of those who crewed them during World War II. “Both boats made significant

contributions to the War effort and saved the lives of many sailors and airmen. The Trust is proud that they are joining with the P2000s for this unique occasion to showcase the past alongside the future generation of the Royal Navy.” The P2000 class of ships are unique to the RN in that they are manned by university students but are commanded by an RN officer, usually a lieutenant. Each of the 14 ships in the squadron is assigned to a university that has a Royal Naval Unit where the undergraduates can become part of the ship’s company for their time at university.

IT was Ladies Day at the ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta in Hyeres, France on 29 April, with Britain’s female sailors picking up six medals on the final day of competition. Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor claimed gold in the women’s match racing event, while there were two podium spots for GBR in the 470 women’s class and also the 2.4mR Paralympic event through Megan Pascoe and birthday girl Helena Lucas. Olympic bronze medallist Bryony Shaw also took bronze in the RS:X women’s windsurfing taking GBR’s medal tally to nine, with Ben Ainslie having secured gold in the Finn class a day early, and Alexandra Rickham-Niki Birrell and Alex Hovden-Kate Mannerings also sealing early gold and silver medals in the SKUD Paralympic class.

New lifeboats named THE RNLI’s latest all-weather class of lifeboat will be called the Shannon. It follows in a 45-year tradition of naming the charity’s lifeboats after rivers or stretches of water but it will be the first time that the name of an Irish river has been used. The Shannon class lifeboat was previously designated the Fast Carriage Boat 2 or FCB2 reflecting that it will be predominantly launched over beaches. It harnesses cutting-edge technology to allow the charity’s volunteer crews to do their lifesaving work as safely as possible

in all weather conditions. Using twin waterjets instead of conventional propellers, the Shannon class will be able to operate in shallow waters and be highly manoeuvrable. Like all RNLI all-weather lifeboats, the Shannon is self-righting and will return to an upright position in the event of capsize. The Shannon will be the final step in enabling the RNLI to fulfill its commitment to ensure that all its operational lifeboats have a top speed of 25 knots. Full sea trials will start later this year.

Silky ‘Smooth’ Sail Handling with Smooth Sail 20 High performance, sail, track and fittings lubricant for yachts, dinghies and racing sail craft Do you experience the frustration of tedious sail handling due to sails sticking, puckering or seizing in their tracks? Do stiff and seizing blocks, travellers, cars and other marine fittings aggravate your boats sailing performance? If so Smooth Sail could be just what’s needed. Smooth Sail is an advanced sail, track and marine fittings lubricator for yachts, dinghies and general racing sailboats. It can be applied liberally around the boat and direct to sails without leaving stains and greasy residues. Smooth Sail is non flammable, solvent free and environmentally friendly.

Entries up for Cowes Week

Another record for Dee

Incredible hulls

Cowes Week. The charity uses sailing as an integral part of the rehabilitation for injured servicemen and will have up to 20 servicemen racing on two J80s from the UKSA as well as Atomic, a Farr 45 generously loaned by owner Tony Langley. Round the World legends Dee Caffari and Brian Thompson will be at the helm at various times during the week. Dee has recently competed in the Barcelona World Race and became the only woman to have completed four circumnavigations of the world. She said: “The calibre of the ablebodied volunteers combined with the drive and determination of the

injured crew makes for some really competitive racing. I am really proud to be one of the charity’s ambassadors and I can’t wait to be dipping my Toe in the Water again!” The Impala 28 Uproar Another has an under-18 crew with an average age of just 16 and could possibly be the youngest crew to race this year. The Uproar team is Henry Sheppard (Helm, 16), Robbie

Southwell (Tactics, Main trim and Crew boss, 16), Max Rimington (Jib trim and Spin trim, 18), Lewis Fitzgerald (Pit and sewer, 14), and Bradley McLaughlin (Bow and mast, 16). Entries have already been received from the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium and Norway. The early bird discount ends at 17:00 on Monday 13 June.

BRITISH yachtswoman Dee Caffari and her Spanish co skipper Anna Corbella on board GAES Centros Auditivos, crossed the finish line of the Barcelona World Race last month, both having achieved a world record. For Dee her third race around the globe thrust her into the record books as the woman that has sailed non-stop around the planet more

times than any other. Anna Corbella became the first Spanish woman to circumnavigate the globe non-stop. The only all female crew in the race finished in sixth place from a starting fleet of 14. Having spent 102 days at sea, Dee said: “To circumnavigate the planet non-stop for a third time and

set another world record is an absolute privilege. “Every time you expose yourself to the extremes of nature you test your luck and, fortunately, mine has held so far.” Dee’s next goal is to compete in the Vendée Globe 2012.

Sea safety at Swanwick BERTH holders and visitors to Premier’s Swanwick marina had the benefit of the latest safety at sea advice from industry professionals and the chance to take part in fun and informative workshops. Over the course of the three-day Bank Holiday weekend the event on the Hamble River covered navigation, survival at sea, personal buoyancy, the use of life rafts, important boat checks, judging the elements and collision regulations. Highlights included life raft inflation demonstrations which were carried out by Universal Safety. Visitors witnessed the difficulty of deploying a life raft which had never been serviced – an important

message to get boating equipment regularly checked to avoid such difficulties in an emergency. The RNLI’s lifejacket clinic also proved to be a popular showpiece with 35 full lifejacket inspections and five SEA Checks taking place on the first day of the event. Landau UK carried out safety Appraisals” and Force4 Chandlery

gave visitors the chance to dispose of their old offshore flares. Gas Check Marine provided visitors with advice on gas systems and performed free visual gas check surveys. The Project Kraken team based themselves at Swanwick for a day with their police launch with advice on how to keep boats and the coastline safe. Inspiration for the Sea Safety Weekend came from Marina Manager, Glyn Davis who wanted to host an event that would educate and inform those new to boating as well as boaters who had a desire to become more ambitious with their cruising.

NEW MOON: 03/05/2011 FULL MOON: 17/05/2011

By Bob Satchwell

IT must have been something I said . . . or was it just the unseasonable sunny and warm weather? You might find it as hard as I did to believe but, on Easter Monday at 11.45 am in about 1.3 metres of water, no more than 20 metres off the beach at Southsea, in glorious sunshine with a temperature of 20 degrees-plus, I caught a fish. It was as any fisherman will tell you, a whopper – as least as big as, well . . . a fish. But it had special significance – my brother had just offered encouragement to his son-in-law in the shape of a bottle of any spirit of his choice, if he succeeded in catching a fish with his posh new line complete with all kinds of go-faster, go-slower, go-deeper gizmos. As a keen fisherman, son-in-law was naturally eager to take advantage of the inducement. It was at this point that I spied in the bottom of the stern locker, a salt-encrusted nylon

line wrapped around a collapsing wooden frame. It had probably not been used for some time and came complete with a collection of rusty hooks attached to a champagne cork for safety. In a mood for taunting, and equally attracted by the bottle of spirits prize, I threw the whole lot overboard remembering at the last moment to hang on to end of the line. It was then a matter of hitching the line to a cleat and sitting back to enjoy the benign breeze and blazing sun. The peace was shattered by a shout loud enough to make the gin jump out of the drinks holder. “Fish!” came the cry from the stern . . . and no-one knew where to look. If we had been any closer to shore we would have been aground and any fish in the vicinity would have been in need of sun block. But feverish hauling of the line produced the goods. A beautiful, shimmering, shinning, flapping sea bass (so I was knowledgeably assured). What’s more it was dangling and flapping at the end of my line – not the posh new one. Within the hour it was cleaned,

fried and devoured, washed down with a chilled product of the Loire valley. It was delicious both in taste and as a consequence of the utter surprise. What’s all the fuss? Well it is at least 20 years of mind numbing waiting since it happened previously (not counting one or two mackerel expeditions, but they don’t qualify). And, most important is that promised bottle of spirits. I fancy something with 20 years or so of history from somewhere off the west coast of Scotland. But, knowing my brother, at the going rate I may well catch another fish before the bottle is delivered . . .

Saving Caroline

Judges in session

THE National Museum of the Royal Navy has accepted the day to day responsibility for the operation and maintenance of HMS Caroline. The ship was decommissioned on the 31 March but remains a Ministry of Defence asset until Parliament formally approves the gift. The National Museum will be developing a submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund and will continue to work with Northern Ireland to consider and examine a way for her to stay in Belfast. But the emphasis is being placed on saving the ship rather than her location. HMS Caroline is a light cruiser, a greyhound of the seas. Built in 1914, she served throughout the First and Second World Wars. She is the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland.

THE 2010 Royal Thames Mansura Trophy, in association with Bosch Engineering GmbH, will be presented at the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s prestigious London Clubhouse on 12 May. Established by the Royal Thames in 2007 and supported by the RYA and The Green-Blue, the trophy is a most prestigious international maritime award to encourage marine companies in developing new forms of hybrid power. Eligible vessels must use at least two independent sources of propulsive power, and the final drive system must be electrical. Previous winners of the Trophy include the French-manufactured Lagoon 420 Hybrid sailing catamaran and Coniston Launches from the UK. www.mansuratrophy.com

The museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has already taken her collection of around 400 items, which have remained with the ship throughout her service. Dr Dominic Tweddle, Director-General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy said: “HMS Caroline is the equal of one of our great cathedrals; if any one of them were threatened with destruction we would not hesitate.”

Unicorn ties knot with RN museum was dramatically affecting the way ships were built. She is now one of the six oldest ships in the world and the most original of any to have survived from the golden age of sail Lord Dalhousie, Chairman of the Unicorn Preservation Society, said, “HM Frigate Unicorn is no longer a commissioned warship, but she still firmly belongs in the naval family and this affiliation represents a very real and valuable integration of Britain’s Royal Naval heritage. “’Unicorn’ is a wooden ship and she cannot remain afloat indefinitely. We are determined to preserve her extraordinary originality, so she needs to be docked in a dry berth covered from the weather. “There is now also an opportunity for Unicorn to move to an ideal final berth within Dundee’s new Central Waterfront development, and it is almost exactly where she spent her first century in Dundee. “This option brings HM Frigate Unicorn into a spectacular triangular

HM FRIGATE Unicorn has become an official affiliate of the national Museum of the Royal Navy. The Princess Royal, who is Patron of both the Unicorn Preservation Society and the National Museum of the Royal Navy, unveiled drawings by Sir Robert Seppings, who designed Unicorn, copies of originals held by the NMRN and donated to the Unicorn. The affiliation aims to increase the understanding and importance of the Navy to Britain’s heritage and to display a clear and practical link with HMS Victory in Portsmouth and HMS Unicorn in Dundee. It will also bring national support and experience to the Unicorn Preservation Society in its battle to secure HMS Unicorn’s long-term future. HMS Unicorn was built in 1824, to the designs of Sir Robert Seppings, the Surveyor of the Navy 1813-1832, at a time when the shortage of timber and the growing availability of iron

Sunsail fleet steps up a gear Photo courtesy of Sunsail

SUNSAIL Racing tried out its new fleet of Beneteau F40s that is already making it presence felt in events on the Solent. At the Sunsail and Garmin European Press Event, 11 of the 42 new F40s competed to give press and partners the chance to experience the thrill of yacht racing in the world’s largest matched charter fleet. Sailing Today editor Jake Frith tried out the new boat. He said: “We took part in two races; one a windless drift that was eventually called off and another in reasonable breeze that

showed these boats to be quite a rapid design. “They are quite powerful, especially downwind due to the fact that they have retained the First 40s full sized mast head spinnaker and we saw eight knots on a broad reach in ten to 12 knots of breeze.” Frith added that the boats gave the general impression that they would provide fantastic one design racing for experienced sailors that might have found the Sunfasts a little pedestrian, while not being too much of a handful for novice crews. Sunsail are retaining some

Sunfast 37s for sail training. Sunsail also introduced its partners for the 2011 season. Garmin have fitted the new fleet with a suite of electronic navigation instruments including their seven inch GPSMAP 750 colour chartplotter which allows for course planning during the race. Marine clothing manufacturers Gill announced a two-year deal as official Sunsail Racing clothing supplier, Chatham Marine signed a similar deal on footwear and the Canary Islands Tourist Board announced a collaboration creating a winter racing program

featuring the new yachts. The tourist board Logo appears on the hulls, sails and flags on 27 of the F40s Simon Conder, Head of Marketing for Sunsail said: “It was great to have such a mixture of novices and experienced sailors able to experience a variety of conditions and see what these boats and Sunsail Racing are all about. “We created Sunsail Racing with exactly what this event offered, allowing people of all sailing abilities to experience competitive racing.”

Partnership provides 500 days of respite

THE partnership between Sail 4 Cancer and Sunsail over the last 18 months has provided over 500 days of respite care for British families who have been affected by cancer - equating to almost one respite day for every day of the partnership. Cathy Jenkins, Family Liaison Officer at Sail 4 Cancer said: “That means that every day for the past year and a half we have been able to take someone affected by cancer out on the water with Sunsail”. Simon Conder, Head of Marketing for Sunsail said: “Sailing is a great way for cancer sufferers and their families to escape the every day realities of living with

cancer… just for a short-time. “The feedback we have received from these sailing days has been amazing and we look forward to helping many more families in the years to come”. Sail 4 Cancer is a charity which uses sailing and other water-based activities as vehicles for both convalescence and fund raising. In addition to providing respite days and trips to British families affected by cancer, the charity has a secondary objective to make grants to palliative care centres around the UK. www.sail4cancer.org

Pensioners on pipes cross the Atlantic A QUARTET of elderly gentlemen who opted to indulge in a late life crisis by attempting to cross the Atlantic in a raft made almost entirely of plastic pipes proved that Columbus was right all along. Led by 85 year adventurer Antony Smith the crew set off from La Gomera, Canaries in Late January and after a gentle ten week drift, punctuated by some heavy weather mid-Atlantic, they made landfall at St

Cruising sailors defy the credit crunch CRUISING sailors are defying the economic turndown and heading across the Atlantic in droves. The World Cruising Club reports that entries for the 26th ARC in 2011 have already exceeded 225 and a waiting list for places has been opened. The list of entrants for the World ARC, scheduled to run from 2012-13

is also up to 30 boats. Jeremy Wyatt, Director of the World Cruising Club, said: “Interest has remained strong in both of our rallies throughout the economic downturn. “When the recession was at its height, a lot of people were simply saying that they might just as well go for an extended cruise because

things looked so bleak. “We seem to be over that phase now but happily numbers are still up and the fact there is a waiting list for this year’s ARC illustrates that enthusiasm is still high.” Another factor is that the world rally circumnavigates via the Cape of Good Hope cutting out the Horn of Africa and associated threat of piracy.

This threat helped to put paid to Blue Water Rallies round the world cruising rally, with piracy attacks leaving much of the fleet stranded in the Gulf of Aden. But BWR’s directors are organising a one-off round the world rally in 2013 to celebrate Oyster Yachts’ 40th anniversary. mail@worldcruising.com

NEWS IN BRIEF Search and rescue LITTLEHAMPTON’S Blue Peter 1 Atlantic 75 lifeboat was launched to search for one casualty and ended up rescuing another. It was sent to search for a 2.2m yellow inflatable dinghy spotted drifting out to sea near Bognor, Sussex, with two people on board but the dinghy and people were found on land later. As the lifeboat returned to its station it rescued a man in distress whose jet ski was sinking.

RNLI rescues three men in a boat

Birthday present HMS WARRIOR 1860 is celebrating its 150th birthday in style by being officially accredited as a museum by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). Warrior 1860 is the third attraction at Portsmouth dockyard after the Mary Rose and the National Museum of the Royal Navy to receive accreditation.

Blue Peter 1 taking the tow of the powerless yacht

PUBLICAN Janet Bradley got the 2011 British regatta season under way with the King and Queen pub pursuit race in Hamble and raised more than £2,000 for Hamble lifeboat in the process. The overall race winner was Martin Moody in the smallest boat in the fleet, a Mirror dinghy.

Launch rescued twice after fuel fault A LUXURY motor launch was rescued twice within five hours by Dartmouth inshore lifeboat after suffering fuel problems. The 30-foot Bayliner was towed into Dartmouth after drifting close

to Mewstone Rock, off Wembury. The fuel fault was rectified and the boat resumed her passage to Plymouth – only to break down again, this time only 100 metres from Mewstone Rock.

RNLI spokesman John Fenton said: "The owner was not a reckless sailor and was mortified at his misfortune. It was just bad luck. He was just unfortunate to have a recurring fault."

LITTLEHAMPTON’s Atlantic 75 lifeboat launched after reports of a small dinghy half a mile off Worthing, with the occupants waving for help. The lifeboat launched at 8:08 am and helmsman Andy Harris and crew Paul James and Rob Devo found the seven foot inflatable toy dinghy 1.8 miles off the coast with three men aboard. They had been afloat since 9:00 pm the previous evening, and were dressed in beach clothes – shorts and t-shirts, with no lifejackets, no means of communication and one paddle. They were disorientated having spent the night in darkness at sea, and were suffering from hypothermia. The three men were recovered to the lifeboat and treated for hypothermia. At Worthing they were met by ambulances. The rescue followed a busy Easter weekend with three calls for help. The first was in sight of the lifeboat crew as they prepared to start an exercise. The Atlantic 75 was launched to rescue a speed boat with engine failure. It was still near the boathouse so it was recovered quickly. A 999 call alerted the lifeboat to search of an inflatable dinghy that had been reported being blown out to sea. The lifeboat found a canoe already had the un-manned inflatable under tow. ‘Blue Peter 1’ was again launched to a yacht with three people on board, which had been bought the day before via E-bay. It was suffering engine failure and adrift and towed to safety. www.littlehamptonlifeboat.co.uk

Journey into space for a bit of history A journey into space for a small piece of history from Henry VIII’s flagship the Mary Rose was delayed when the space shuttle Endeavour's final flight was delayed. The shuttle was due to make a 14-day mission to the International Space Station last month with a three-inch wooden ball from the 16th century warship which sank off Portsmouth in 1545 on board. The ball, called a "parrel", was part of the mechanism used to raise sails up the masts. NASA space shuttle and International Space Station managers decided that the flight would have to be delayed until May 10 at the earliest. At a gala dinner last June the Mary Rose Trust in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard presented the crew of the Atlantis space shuttle with the ball with a view to sending it into space. The historic artifact was due to be launched aboard Endeavour on its final flight before retirement. John Lippiett, Chief Executive of the trust,

who made the presentation to the astronauts, said: “The Mary Rose was as revolutionary in technological advances 500 years ago as the Space Shuttle was in the early 1980s. Both have helped pioneer exploration and advance the sciences. “We are thrilled that she will be making history once more on the final mission for Endeavour. The Mary Rose is also connected to NASA through astronaut Michael Foale who worked as a volunteer diver on the ship's excavation in 1981. He later flew in the space shuttle to the Russian space station Mir and to the International Space Station. The tradition of taking historical items into space began with NASA's first astronauts. Over the last 50 years commemorative objects have flown to the moon's surface and made repeated orbits of Earth. The Mary Rose sank in the Battle of the Solent. She was raised in 1982 with her collection of 19,000 objects presenting a unique time capsule and one of the world’s

most precious heritage icons. The Mary Rose 500 Appeal is currently fundraising to secure the building of the new Mary Rose Museum to open in autumn 2012, which will reunite the hull with her artifacts and ensure completion of the conservation in 2016 providing visitors with new and unique views of the vessel. www.maryrose500.org

KIT

BEARING OCEAN WEAR

SIDE-IMAGING SONAR

THE new Ocean Wear collection from Dutch company, Bearing, is designed for active sailors - and that means no more heavy, bulky jackets or trousers. Instead, these lightweight garments are designed to combine quality protection against the elements with flexibility and comfort. The AMT inshore jacket (pictured right) is made from Schoeller NanoSphere, three-layer stretch fabric with what the company calls ‘bionic membrane’ technology. It’s only available online so you can’t try it on until it arrives on your doormat, but at prices like these, you should expect a waterproof, windproof and appropriately breathable garment that fits well and looks and feels great. Price: 349 Euros www.bearing-sportswear.com

GEONAV has become the first manufacturer to introduce Side Imaging and Down Imaging sonar to the blue water marine electronics market. Available on Geonav’s new GIS 12 and GIS 10 integrated MultiFunction Displays, Side Imaging Sonar extends 240 feet on each side of the boat, while Down Imaging sonar offers picture-like images of what is directly below the boat. With full GPS integration, you can even mark the location of structures or wrecks as waypoints directly on screen. Price: various www.geonavmarine.com

WATERTIGHT BACKPACK OVERBOARD, a leading designer and manufacturer of waterproof travel and sports gear (and an official kit supplier to the RNLI), has launched the Pro-Sports Waterproof Backpack. This fully submersible 20 or 30-litre roll-top bag not only protects the user’s contents from water, sand, dirt and dust but also floats when dropped in water. It has high-frequency electronically welded construction, plus a large internal zip pocket for your mobile phone and a handy, external pocket for drinks. The frontal mesh area is a great place for any wet gear, and the elasticated ties mean you can radically expand the bags carrying capacity for items that don’t require the waterproof storage of the main internal compartment. We have used Overboard bags on plenty of jaunts before now and can affirm that they are extremely comfortable to wear and beautifully built. With padded shoulder straps, lumbar support, an optional waist strap and roll-top fastening, it really is excellent kit at a sensible price. Price: £46 (20-litre); £56.50 (30-litre) www.overboard.com

CLEVER KEY TOOL TRUE Utility has become well known as a provider of devilishly clever gadgets to solve problems you weren’t entirely aware you had. Take the new Twistick for instance. It’s a fully functioning keyring and corkscrew, constructed from a stainless steel bar that passes through the centre of a full-sized corkscrew helix. It saves very little space and you could of course do without it but it’s not until someone builds such a thing that you realise how desirable it is. It’s attractive, effective, well-priced equipment from a very impressive company. Price: £4.99 www.trueutility.co.uk

THE BIG-MOUTHED SKIPPER THE ability to hear VHF transmissions is important to any boat owner, especially in poor weather or emergencies - and with up to 40 watts of power handling capacity, Shakespeare’s new HS-40 PA could be the answer. Designed for loudhailers and marine VHF radios that have built-in PA or loudhailer functions, it fully supports the hail, foghorn and ‘listen back’ functions. In ‘listen back’ mode, it helps amplify person-to-person communication when a radio is not being used, which is particularly useful in emergency situations. It comes with a tilt-mount bracket for deck or bulkhead mounting, and it also supports flush mounting. Constructed from high-impact white plastic, the 8-ohm model (pictured) has a frequency response of 250 Hz to 8 KHz and can operate in temperatures from minus 40 to plus 80 degrees Centigrade. THE PROP HANDBOOK THIS 176-page paperback describes itself as the ‘Complete Reference for Choosing, Installing and Understanding Boat Propellers’ so it has a serious job to do. Even so, this reference for all boats (power and sail, working and pleasure) is written not for PhDs seeking the latest tweak in hightech propeller design, but as a practical aid for the average mechanic, engineer, boatbuilder, boat owner or naval architect. Propellers remain something of a black art and when a boat doesn’t perform as advertised, it’s often the propeller that’s at fault. The handbook answers such key questions as why the engine won’t reach its top RPM, why the propeller shaft is vibrating and why the boat doesn’t reach its advertised speed. Obviously, picking the right prop requires some on-water testing, but this book remains a fine starting point. Price: £14.99 Publisher: TAB Books Inc - New Edition ISBN-13: 9780071381765

Check, clean, dry and... relax Helen Waterhouse Development Officer, The Green Blue

THIS spring seems to have been warmer and sunnier than I can remember. With just the sniff of a sunny day, we seem to be taking to our boats in the masses and looking forward to the long sailing season ahead of us. Perhaps you are busy planning some summer jaunts to new and exciting harbours, anchorages and inlets, or maybe you will be trailing your dinghy and competing in championships and regattas across the country or even further afield. If you are thinking of visiting a new place this summer then I’m sure you

will be familiar with the usual passage planning or race preparation which goes hand in hand with such a trip. But did you know that boaters are now also being asked to consider how they can reduce the risk of spreading Non-Native Invasive Species as well? Non-natives, sometimes referred to as Alien Species, can cause major problems for our native flora and fauna, often smothering native species and damaging natural ecosystems. They can also have serious impacts on our fishing industry and cost the UK economy over £2 billion every year just to clean up. Although NNIS have been introduced by accident, often arriving here in the ballast water of ships and tankers, they can be easily spread around our waterways and coastline

 DEFRA’s Check, Clean Dry Campaign: www.direct.gov.uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/ Thewiderenvironment/Protectingwildlife/ DG_196114?CID=EAL&PLA=url_mon&CRE=check_clean_dry  Check out how Grafham Water Sailing Club is dealing with the arrival of the Killer shrimp. http://www.grafham.org/?page_id=2014  For further information on how to deal with NNIS check out The Green Blue website: www.thegreenblue.org.uk/boat_users/antifoul_and_ invasive_species.aspx

by recreational boats. And therefore we boaters can play a vital part in preventing this spread. The Green Blue has been advising boaters on how to minimise the spread of NNIS for some time but we know that a united effort is what is needed. So with this in mind, DEFRA have launched their new campaign, Check, Clean, Dry which is aimed at all those involved in watersports who can, unwittingly, spread non-native invasive species as they move between different bodies of water. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the problem of NNIS but more importantly, shows us in three

simple steps what we can all do on our boats to prevent the spread:  Check equipment and clothing for live organisms - particularly in areas that are damp or hard to inspect before moving to a new location.  Clean and wash all equipment, footwear and clothing thoroughly. If you do come across any organisms, leave them at the water body where you found them.  Dry all equipment and clothing – some species can live for many days in moist conditions. Make sure you don’t transfer water elsewhere. By following the DEFRA advice we can all help to prevent an invasion

of alien species which could result in temporary restrictions on our activities, such as those recently experienced at Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire when the Killer Shrimp was found. Grafham Water Sailing Club’s response was to set up a comprehensive system for checking and washing down all boats; the temporary restrictions were lifted and the club has been able to crack on with a full and busy programme of competitions and events. New young blood for our sport Shelley Jory-Leigh British Powerboat Champion www.shelleyjory.com

MAX Coleman is a nine year old boy from Whiteley, Southampton, who attends Whiteley Primary School. He has many hobbies including body boarding, he is a brown belt in Karate as well as being a Cub Scout, and if all that wasn’t enough he is now following in my footsteps and embarking in his debut year as a powerboat racer in UK Formula Future Offshore Race Club – UKFORC. Max has always lived on the south coast and he quite naturally loves the sea but his first experience of boating got off to a shaky start when at the tender age of two trips out on the family boat were “too bumpy and scary”. How times have changed! His Dad, Gary, changed career in

2008 and qualified as a power boat instructor launching Coleman Marine Services and this is where Max’s love of power boating started. He often took the helm of the RIB, this time very much enjoying the waves and the thrill of going fast. Whilst working with P1 Superstock, Gary introduced Max to many of the characters involved in the power boating world and the attraction was instant. Many weekends were spent following the race boats out in the Solent to witness the sights and sounds of the powerful machines, taking pictures and using them to cover school books and filling up his holiday scrapbooks. UKFORC, successfully run by Dennis Swann, accommodates youngsters from the age of nine upwards. It is a fun club offering affordable powerboat racing – whether you are an adrenaline junkie or a family wanting to enjoy some quality time.

Max Coleman and trainer Neil Holmes Inset: the youngsters racing in UKFORC

UKFORC also boasts one of the greenest fleets in the sport by running environmentally friendly engines in all four of our classes. The boats used are all production hulls and engines, making it possible to race on a low budget. Winning is all about driver ability. After getting several companies to sponsor Max, he is now the proud owner of a 12-foot Sorcerer, with a green 25hp Evinrude engine, sprayed up in ‘Max Tech Racing’ colours, but before he could race he had to pass his RYA race training. His training was done with my

good friend and trainer – seven times world champion, Neil Holmes at his Powerboat Academy in Southampton. The training included theory in the classroom learning about flags, tides, wind, etc, followed by a day putting the theory into practise on the Solent. Max had to demonstrate that he could competently and safely handle the boat on his own, before Neil granted him his race licence. At the end of March with race licence in hand, Max went to his first UK Formula Future meeting at Stewartby Lakes, Bedfordshire.

He soon learnt the ropes of scrutineering, driver’s briefings and getting to know the other drivers. As the youngest and least experienced of his cohort he was both excited and nervous at what was in store. Although a little frustrated that he wasn’t the quickest, his technique, observations of the rules and safety were first class which earned him his first medal for special achievement. Mum and dad are very proud parents and cannot believe how it has bought Max out of his often introvert shell. I will tell you more how my little protégé gets on in his debut year.

Ten years of Team 15 The programme was set up to provide not only a feed into the RYA competition pathway but if not more importantly, to develop a grassroots programme that made it easier for youngsters up to the age of 15 to get involved in the sport. The best way to do this was by developing a network of clubs that could provide friendly, fun- filled competition out on the water combined with good coaching and supervision. “The programme looked to ensure that windsurfing skills of all descriptions were nurtured, providing children with a good foundation in the sport” said Gillian. “Suitable kit is also made readily available by the clubs and, essentially, the programme was ready to go!” In order to develop the grassroots competition side of the programme, clubs were encouraged to put together a team of up to 15 children, all aged 15 or under – which is how the programme got its name. For more information on T15 and how you can get involved either in the coaching, or if you’re young enough, taking part, visit: www.rya.org.uk or call 02380 604 100.

Photo: RYA

MUCH has changed since 2001 when Bob the Builder topped the charts. Tony Blair was Prime Minister and our economy was booming. It’s true of the windsurfing world too, which has also seen some radical developments over the last ten years. Boards have got fatter and lighter, masts have got thinner and the Team15 programme has grown to a point where the UK has one of the finest club structures for young windsurfers in the world. The RYA Team15 programme was in embryonic form back in 2001. It is now celebrating a decade of success and is arguably, one of the biggest developments in the world of windsurfing in the last ten years. Joined by free wave windsurfer George Shillito and successful sailing stars Saskia and Imogen Sills, Team15 friends, sponsors and supporters and

some special ex Team15ers marked the tenth birthday celebrations at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show back in March. “We are very proud to be celebrating Team15’s tenth birthday this year,” said Gillian Wright, Team15 Manager and the RYA’s National Windsurfing Development Officer, who has been a driving force behind the programme since its inception. “Naturally I’m very proud of what we have achieved so far, and I’m sure there is more to come from T15,” she said, looking back on the programmes development with considerable pride. “It’s fantastic to see the youngsters progressing from Team15 to succeed in a variety of windsurfing disciplines including racing, freestyle and waves. Whatever they go on to do, we hope that they will continue to windsurf long after their Team15 days.”

Champions Cup FRIENDLY inter-club rivalry was encouraged and to give the whole thing a clear structure, teams from the same zones took part in interclub challenges and vied for the chance to make it to the T15 national Championships – the T15 Champions Cup. It was a foundation which has been built on with great success. Team15’er Tom Sylvester from the 2010 Roseland Waveriders team said: “The Champions Cup is brilliant. It involves everyone from the younger ones who are just beginning right up to age 15. I’m now in my final year

and Team15 has been so good. I love getting out in the wind and getting the speed going. “My advice for other youngsters who want to windsurf is to find a Team15 club, join as quickly as possible and get out on the water lots.” Today there are currently some 80 Team15 clubs from a far afield as Cornwall and Scotland with many of them putting their windsurfing skills to the test in the Team15 interclub championship and this year’s competition is set to be a corker.

Coaching IN the formative years of the T15 Programme a new style coaching programme had to be developed to underpin the T15 philosophy. Coaches and organisers were ready and willing to go the extra mile in order to ensure that it was a success and the take up was extremely good. Ten years on and many of today’s young windsurfers will undoubtedly have experienced that first thrill of windsurfing under the careful supervision of a Team15 club. Perhaps the best measure of the programme’s success is to take a look at some of the alumni who have graduated through the ranks of T15. World class sailors such as Izzy

Hamilton, the Sills family – big brother Sam and twin sisters, Saskia and Imogen; Youth Olympics Bronze Medallist Kieren Martin; Freewave sailors George Shillito, Graham Woods and Adam Lewis who left T15 to form Team AirBorn are just a few of the ex-T15 sailors who have gone on to greater things and many have become windsurfing instructors of talent themselves. Developing the windsurfing stars of the future is really just the thin end of the wedge, however when it comes to T15. For every star of the future the programme helps along the way, there will be a hundred or so youngsters who catch the bug for windsurfing for life.

Geoff Holt The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.

DAME Ellen MacArthur founded the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in 2003. It is a charity which provides sailing opportunities for children recovering from cancer so they can experience the same life-changing thrill of being at sea that she herself found through sailing. It is not only a commendable legacy, its genius lies in its built-in volunteer sustainability. For the second year running, 15 young adults are currently taking part in the trust's Volunteer Training Week. Their objective is to attain their RYA Competent Crew certificate and some will also achieve their RYA Day Skipper ticket. But these are no ordinary young adults. They all have their own stories of childhood cancer, each has undergone years of treatments, and each has, at some stage, sailed as a child recovering from cancer with the trust. Now they are back, having recovered from their illness, to learn how to sail

so they can volunteer with the trust and sail with the next generation of young children recovering from cancer. Having undergone treatments and overcome cancer themselves, these 18 to 24 year olds are rolemodels and a vital inspiration for the new set of youngsters facing their own challenges. Frank Fletcher, Chief Executive of the Trust said: "Young people who have recovered from cancer very rarely meet other young people in the same position and most never get to meet an adult who went through cancer as a young person. “The positive effect on the young people who have just finished treatment, being able to spend time with an adult who really understands what they've been through is hugely beneficial." Of the 15 volunteers trained last year, all of them qualified with their Competent Crew certificates and 13 returned in the summer of 2010 to volunteer on many of the Trust’s voyages. Laura, one of the first participants of the trust's Volunteer week said: “I was 13 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I found out in the school summer holidays. When I went back to school I started to get more and more tired and my hair started falling

out, which was traumatic. I was teased for wearing a hat. “I was nervous before my first trip with the trust but it didn’t take long for everyone to relax. It seems so long ago now but all I remember is having an amazing time. “Being on the water every day really is something else. “I wanted to volunteer to give something back to the trust, but also as an opportunity to have professional training. It was absolutely amazing, we learned so many skills, though it was still fun and relaxed, and at the end I got my competent crew qualification. “Sailing was something I never thought I would get a chance to do, let alone qualify as a competent crew! “My first trip as a trust volunteer was the Round the Island Race last June. I was wary about being on the other side, being the volunteer and not the young person, but the young people we had on the boat were amazing, and it was great to meet them and help them learn to sail. “I think they were able to relate to me as I’ve been in their position. Not everyone wants to talk about their illness but others find it helps them let off steam. Either is fine, I’m just happy to help them as a volunteer.” This year’s volunteers come from all corners of the UK and they will spend their week sailing along the

south coast whilst learning yachting terms and parts of the boat, rigging and sail handling, rope-work, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners and customs, rules of the road and dinghies. Accompanied by three qualified skippers, they are sailing on three yachts, the trust’s own 44 foot yacht, Moonspray, and two yachts generously provided by Sunsail. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has just been selected as the official

Niggles as we motor to Sicily Sticky’s tips By Sticky Stapylton

WE are now in Malta having passed through Gibraltar, Palma Majorca and Sciacca a port on the south coast of Sicily. There has been too much motoring for my liking but we had to keep up to our schedule. As with all new boats we are still having niggling problems. The bow thruster, which in my

view is an old man’s bit of kit, and which a good skipper should be able to dispense with in the case of breakdown, has done just that. The batteries powering it have decided to divorce themselves from the boat’s electrical system and we have no indication that the auxiliary batteries exist. We have managed to overcome temporarily the problem of chafe with the cruising chute on starboard tack by padding the forestay base below the furling drum. The owner will need some form of proboscis to

J Class at Cowes 2012 UP to nine J class yachts will be racing round the Isle of Wight on 21st July next year in a re-enactment of the 100 Guinea cup raced in 1851. I am chartering a 700-ton vessel which will carry 300 passengers, from which we can watch the race. I will be providing bacon butties, a slap up lunch and afternoon tea. There will be a bar. overcome this. The rivets holding the goose-neck on to the boom had failed to hold the two parts together and holes had to be drilled to put in larger rivets. This was done in Gibraltar and it seems to be holding up. We had an interesting run going towards Sicily. A following sea with gusts to f7, three reefs in the main and a pocket handkerchief of a headsail gave us speeds of over 9 knots when surfing down the waves on a broad reach. Helming was quite tricky, the waves were picking up the stern and skewing the boat off course even before the preventer lashing came adrift. After that we stowed the main and sailed under headsail alone. The auto pilot really came into its own with the less experienced helmsmen and kept us on a really steady course. The battery drain was quite high and during a seven hour stint we had to recharge the batteries three times each for an hour. Fortunately with a generator as well

as the auxiliary engine (should it be called that now?) there was plenty of power available. The spreaders are not set back all that much but I am surprised that a new boat with brand new sails does not have ante-chafe patches to cut down wear. With the headsail halyard fully tensioned, we are still getting chafe on the foot against the pulpit, so we do not pull the headsail out fully however light the winds. The mainsail reefing system has been changed from single line to slab. A great improvement in my view, as you get far less line in the cockpit with the latter. Blocks on the clews of the reefs cut down on the friction and in order to ensure the blocks are reasonably secure we moused the pins with cable

ties. (See photo). I am indebted to Ian Whitmore, who came with us on leg three from Bayona to Gibraltar for this idea. Despite all these niggles, the boat does sail extremely well and we are making good progress. Like a lot of modern boats, there is still the uncomfortable slamming of the bow going to windward when the flat forefoot comes down from a wave. My old Rival 34, and later my Laurent Giles 44 never suffered from this problem because their keels were much longer and cut through the waves rather than slamming down on to them. The added bonus with both of these boats was that their ballast was all encapsulated, so there was no question of a keel bolt problem or of a keel coming adrift!

NEWS IN BRIEF Windsurfer rescued

Saved with their catch TWO men out fishing in their Mirror dinghy caught more than they bargained for after drifting out in choppy water and windy weather off Hove on 26 April. The sea had become choppy in the freshening winds and the craft had no sails. The dinghy crew called the Coastguard and the Shoreham RNLI inshore lifeboat crew launched. They found the men about a mile and a half offshore and towed the craft back to shore with the men on board – along with the single mackerel that they had caught.

Volunteers launch twice to aid grounded yacht

THE Cornish volunteers of Newquay’s inshore lifeboat launched twice on the same day last month to assist a stricken yacht. The French ocean going yacht and her six crew were on their way to the Isles of Scilly when they decided to make a stop off in Newquay Harbour. They misjudged the depth of the ebbing tide and quickly became stranded on Towan Beach.

Alerted by Newquay’s harbour master, Falmouth Coastguard tasked the RNLI inshore lifeboat. The D class lifeboat, Valerie Wilson, launched at 1pm with Ben Eglinton at the helm. The yacht was broad side on in the heavy surf and in danger of toppling. Ben and his crew secured the yacht’s anchor seaward beyond the surf, allowing the yacht to turn bow

into the surf – a more stable position and ready for the flood tide. The skipper of the yacht was able to raise the drop keel allowing the boat to sit safely on the sand as the tide ebbed. With the yacht in a safe position, the lifeboat crew returned to station to sit and wait for the tide to turn. The casualty’s crew remained on board. The volunteers relaunched the

lifeboat at approximately 3pm with Simon Bennetts at the helm, to stand by as the stricken vessel refloated on the incoming flood tide. Once she was afloat in sufficient depth of water and inspected for any damage, the grateful yacht crew continued on their journey to the Isles of Scilly. Newquay’s volunteers returned to the station at around 4pm.

AAS1105 SWBS

A WINDSURFER enjoying brisk winds in Eastbourne Bay got into difficulties on the evening of 27 April when his mast broke 800 metres offshore, leaving him helpless in the water and unable to combat the tide. Holidaymakers dialled 999 and informed the Coastguard. Eastbourne RNLI’s inshore lifeboat crew were on scene in a matter of minutes. The windsurfer and his equipment was taken aboard and safely returned to the beach.

BOOKS IN BRIEF Dolphins Under My Bed Adlard Coles Nautical • £8.99 • ISBN: 978 1 408 13288 3

PROVING that sailing is not just the husband’s pursuit, this charming narrative of one couple’s first long distance voyage is told from the wife’s perspective. Writing in a lively, humorous way, Sandra Clayton gives an entertaining account of her and husband David’s maiden cruise from the UK, down the Atlantic coast and into the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Conscious that old age or poor health could prevent them from sailing away for much longer, they left the world of work behind to chase their dream of adventure. Conditions are sometimes maddening, occasionally dangerous, but frequently magical. Marine creatures enchant their days while ships that pass in the night add a touch of romance. Dolphins Under My Bed is far more than just the story of the Claytons’ 2000 mile trip. Somewhat unprepared for what faced them on the way, they had to learn from their own mistakes, finding themselves in places and situations where they never expected to be. Dolphins Under My Bed has plenty to offer those who might consider embarking on a similar voyage of their own: learn how the Claytons did it, which route they took, the

MERCURY Yacht Harbour is one of 19 locations owned and operated by MDL Marinas. All of MDL’s marinas offer extensive facilities and services including onsite electricity and fresh water, CCTV coverage and staffing 365 days a year, showers, toilets and car parking. Originally built by Sir Robin Knox Johnston, Mercury Yacht Harbour is situated in a sheltered wooded site where the shallow waters of Badnam Creek join the River Hamble. Just a 20 minute walk from Hamble village, the marina offers berthing for 360 boats and enjoys deep water at all states of tide. Among its excellent facilities are a chandlery as well as a bar and restaurant with waterfront views. It is a scenic, peaceful spot, which still provides easy access to Southampton Water and the Solent. There are plenty of other tranquil anchorages to visit, such as Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight or the pretty Beaulieu River. Further afield is Poole Harbour and to the east lie Portsmouth and the sheltered waters of Chichester Harbour. There is always activity on the River Hamble, with fleets of racers out every weekend during the summer. Throughout autumn, many hardy sailors participate in the Hamble Winter Series. Mercury Yacht Harbour also provides an ideal base from which to visit some of MDL’s other marinas

History in full flow IF Cowes is the home of yachting the Hamble River must be its second home or at least its dormitory. There are 3,500 boats on the river and it is popular because of its deep water, double tides and easy access to the Solent and the Channel. As well as boating people many others have settled along the banks, from shipbuilders to writers and artists. It is full of history – natural and manmade. There is the wreck of the Grace Dieu, built for Henry V at Southampton in 1414-18. This was the largest ship to have been built at that time, the first North European three masted sailing vessel. It has been described as the space shuttle of its day, the peak achievement of the military-industrial complex of the time. But like some many similar innovations by the time it was complete it was redundant It put to sea just once, suffering a mutiny off the Isle of Wight in the process, and after Henry’s death in 1422 the ship was laid up on the Hamble until 1439 when it was struck by lightning and burned to the waterline. The remains of the ship belong to Southampton University which bought it for £10 in 1975. Overlooking the river the big house on the hill is Brixedene House, now called Bursledon Hall. It is said this was built for Herbert Pennington – the man who put the HP in HP Sauce. It wasn't – there was no Herbert Pennington. At the outbreak of World War II it became quarters for Royal Navy officers and Wrens in the run-up to D-day. The river filled up with landing craft and naval patrol vessels. The field was filled with tented accommodation and what is now the Manor Farm Country Park became HMS Cricket – a shorebase comprising 120 buildings. For a year the woods teemed with activity and 4, personnel passed through on their way to Normandy on 6 June 1944. Following the war Brixedene House became Southampton Children’s Hospital. The three bridges that span the river are the A27 road bridge, the Brighton to Bristol railway and the M27 motorway. The original road bridge was a toll bridge built in 1800, the current structure dates from the 1930s.

Looking after the future The beautiful locations of MDL’s marinas deserve special consideration if they are to be enjoyed in years to come. This is why MDL fully supports The Green Blue, the environmental awareness campaign run by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. The aim of this initiative is to educate and inform the recreational boating community about potential impact on the environment. All MDL Marinas have provision for dealing with oil, fuel, cleaning, maintenance, anti-fouling, marine paints and waste management Before there was a bridge here there was a ferry. Alongside the Elephant boatyard is an odd looking craft – now a restaurant, once a disco called Floaters, but originally the chain ferry or Floating Bridge that linked Woolston with Southampton across the River Itchen. The Elephant boatyard takes its name from a ship built here in 1786, by George Parsons. HMS Elephant was Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Copenhagen on which he put his telescope to his blind eye and saw no signal. A few years later it was under the command of Captain Frank Austen, brother of Jane. Elephant became the Mermaid boatyard for the 80's television series Howards Way. Swanwick Marina, the only large marina on the river not owned by MDL, has been there since 1827. It has been part of Premier Marinas since 2007. It is believed that before the Romans arrived in Britain in 43 AD the Hamble River was a boundary between two Iron Age tribes. The Romans passed through but there were no large settlements. It wasn’t until the Saxons came that the area became settled. The long straight section of the river is known locally as the Long Reach. On the eastern side is a footpath linking Warsash and Lower Swanwick passing through Crableck with its blue telephone box and Universal boatyard where midget submarines called X-boats were built. They were tested on the river before being taken (amidst great secrecy) to a base in Scotland. The X-boats were responsible for the sinking of the German ship Tirpitz, as well as being

Worth a visit THE Jolly Sailor, originally a vicarage but a pub since 1845 was made famous by the TV series “Howards Way”. Howards' Way was a television drama series produced by BBC Birmingham and transmitted between 1 September 1985 and 25 November 1990. The series dealt with the personal and professional lives of the yachting and business communities in the fictional town of Tarrant on the South Coast of England, and was filmed on the River Hamble and the Solent. Most of the location filming for the series was carried out in Bursledon, Hamble, Swanwick, Warsash, Hill Head, Lee-on-the-Solent, Southampton and Fareham.

involved in the D-day landings. Just above Port Hamble TS Mercury was established as a sail training establishment for “poor boys of good character” to fit them for the Merchant and Royal Navy. Initially based on the Isle of Wight it moved to the Hamble in 1892 The Mercury provided the opportunity for many hundreds of young boys to receive training for a life at sea. It is said that the regime was harsh, but so was life at sea. The facility closed in 1968. The Royal Southern is one of several sailing clubs on the river. At Warsash are the Household Division Yacht Club, Warsash Sailing Club on the other side is the Hamble River Sailing Club Royal Southern and RAF Yacht Club. During the 1972 Olympics half of the British Sailing Team was from Hamble, including John Oakley who went on to skipper Lionheart in the 1980 America’s Cup. Port Hamble Marina was built on the site used in the mid 18th century by Moody Janverin, a local shipbuilder. Port Hamble Marina was the first marina in the UK, established in the mid 1960s. Individual boats on the river change all the time but Port Hamble is a base

for many well known yachts. The late former Prime Minister Edward Heath kept his yacht Morning Cloud and for a season it was a base for round the world yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur. Nowadays Port Hamble is owned by MDL. The quayside at Hamble has been centre of the village’s fishing industry for centuries, with buildings here

dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The pink house, called Ferryside Cottage, was the crew house of Tracey Edwards and the all-girl crew of Maiden in the run up to the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race. At the top of the hill you can see the white gable end of Hamble Manor House – once owned by the East End gangsters the Kray twins.

Pilotage By Sea Keep clear of commercial shipping in Southampton Water. From Hook starboard hand buoy head for Hamble Pt South Cardinal buoy at the mouth of the well-marked river. From here the channel is narrow between drying banks, so be sure to leave the No 2 East Cardinal beacon to port. At night two directional lights lead to Warsash Jetty on the east bank. About 1·35 miles north, Mercury Yacht Harbour is the third marina on the west bank. It is essential to call on VHF Ch 80 or by phone for a vacant berth.

By Road The postcode for your Sat Nav is SO31 4HQ. From the M3 take the M27 Eastbound for Portsmouth. Exit Junction 8 of the M27 for Southampton East/Hamble. Follow signs for Hamble on B3397, Hamble Lane, going straight across three roundabouts. After the third roundabout, turn left into Satchell Lane (signposted to Mercury Yacht Harbour). Follow the road for approximately one mile. Mercury Yacht Harbour is on the left.

Good green reason to sail for Portugal In the drink

AAS0907 Pussers

By Paul Antrobus

VINHO Verde is a delicious, some say unique, wine with a lovely aroma and slight pétillance that makes it distinctive and highly regarded, especially for summer drinking. Medium in alcohol, it’s excellent with food. This delightful wine from Portugal is not often on the radar away from its home base in the Minho region to the north of Porto, even in Portugal itself. The ‘Green Wine’ name refers to the young freshness of the wine, not the colour, although there may be a slight green tint to the white variety, possibly imagined. There are reds, whites and rosés. The reds are full-bodied with intense colour and a give off a light rosy-red foam. The mini-head on the whites is lemony or straw coloured. Vinhos Verdes are light, fresh and intended

to be drunk within a year of bottling. At less than one bar of CO2 pressure, they do not quite qualify as semi-sparkling wines but the definite pétillance tingles the tongue. The white Vinho Verde is very fresh, due its natural acidity, softened during fermentation, varying between 8.5 to 11 per cent abv and made from local grape varieties Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura, Avessa and Azul. The grapes are grown high up on poles the size of telegraph poles, in nice fresh air but the real reason is so that the land below can be double used for growing vegetables. These vines occupy 15 per cent of Portugal’s vine area. The high growing, the soil and the north Portugal climate deliver the distinctive character and originality. The white is especially good with food and in summer nowhere better than in Portugal in ports such as Cascais. If you’ve crossed the Bay and made it to the excellent marina at Cascais, make your way, walking, from the marina, across the road to the little ‘square’ and up a little side

street to the left of the pub, to find Restaurante Dom Pedro, tucked away in a corner by the steps up. Very friendly, super fish, full of locals and the best Quinta da Avelada ‘Green’ wine in town. Near neighbours to Vinhos Verdes are the Vinhos Alvarinhos which are made from Alvarinho grapes, grown in a small designated sub-region of Monção, in the north and some way inland from the sea. This wine has more alcohol – 11.5 to 14 per cent – and ripe tropical aromas. The reds are deep red and tannic and mostly made from Vinhão, Borraçal and Amaral grapes. The rosés are very fresh and fruity, usually made from Espadeiro and Padeiro grapes. These are all excellent drinking. When in Portugal look out for them. Once found, look no further. There is limited choice in the UK, unfortunately. But one very acceptable white I found in Waitrose at £6.70 a bottle is Quinta de Azevedo Vinho Verde. Quite tart, a sipper more than a quaffer.
