A RECORD 1,908 boats were entered – a sizeable increase since the first Round the Island Race sailed by just 25 in 1931 – and the sun was shining as they gathered in Cowes for the next day’s early morning start. It was set to be a celebration in style thanks to the meticulous planning of the Island Sailing Club, generous sponsors J.P. Morgan Asset Management, other race partners and the 16,000 or so sailors, many of them once a year racers. The ISC had thought of everything including detailed – and accurate weather briefings courtesy of Raymarine but the morning of Saturday June 25 dawned, damp, misty and windy. From the first start at 0600 the weather dominated, throwing everything it had to offer at the record-breaking fleet. Masts were tumbling from the beginning and the Coastguard and rescue services braced themselves for what would become their busiest day. Nick Rogers, who usually sails a 470 with partner Chris Grube, helmed the Contessa 26 Sundowner to victory on corrected time and to pick up the coveted Gold Roman Bowl.

a great but challenging event.” Thousands of weary but generally happy sailors returned to Cowes and the marinas along the South Coast from mid afternoon feeling justifiably proud of their immense achievement in getting round safely in tough conditions for even the most experienced and hardened sailor. The final number of boats to cross the finish line in Cowes was 1,302. There were 438 retirements and 16 were disqualified or were on course side at the start. The Race Viewer, allowing online spectators to track boats of their choice, was downloaded by over 32,000 people. The race is the fourth biggest participatory sports event after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs. It also raises thousands for charities including the official race charity, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Next year’s race is on Saturday 30 June. www.roundtheisland.org.uk

Sundowner takeS Gold roman Bowl NICK Rogers, who usually sails a 470 double-handed keelboat with partner Chris Grube, helmed Contessa 26 Sundowner to victory to maintain a family tradition. Rogers mastered difficult conditions in the crowded Solent to win the Gold Roman Bowl, awarded to the best corrected time after handicaps are calculated. Winning the trophy has become something of a family affair in recent years, with uncle Jeremy Rogers claiming the coveted prize in 2002, 2003 and 2006. “I’ve been trying for a while, it’s a bit of a family tradition and I don’t dare think how many times I’ve been round the Isle of Wight, so to have won is really pleasing,” said Rogers. “It is really important to me, it’s totally different to the Olympics. It’s a great challenge, there are so many other boats and so many different elements.” It caps a memorable few weeks for new father Rogers, after he and Grube finished as top Brits at the ISAF World Cup regatta in Weymouth, securing selection for the critical Olympic test event. Meanwhile, Ben Ainslie will also refocus sights on his london 2012 campaign after a ‘fun’ sail. Ainslie helmed 40’ foot yacht Keronimo with a crew that included

Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood. He may have three Olympic golds but the 80-year old Gold Roman Bowl still remains elusive from his impressive resume. He was hopeful of his chances of winning the top prize, won a record four times by former British prime minister ted Heath. “It was pretty extreme conditions, we had 30 knots of wind and very rough waves,” said Ainslie. “It was fun and we all got back in one piece but I’m just focusing on getting myself ready for the Olympic test event in August.”

Line Honours went to French skipper Lionel Lemonchois and his 50-foot multihull Prince de Bretagne which was first to cross the finish line in 3h 49m and 58s – more than 40 minutes outside the course record. The last of the yachts home, Pendragon of Dartmouth, a Jeanneau Sun Fizz 40, made it across the finish line a mere three seconds before the line closed officially at 2200 hours, bagging themselves the ‘Tenacity Trophy’. The sailors faced winds up to 28 knots and more plus huge swells off the Needles and at St. Catherine’s as the fleet undertook the 50 nautical mile circumnavigation. The Coastguard dealt with a number of man overboard reports and capsizes as well as dismastings. There was a lot of sail damage across the fleet that ranged from high tech racers through to smaller boats. Some of the incident reports involved spectator boats rather than competitors. Dave Atkinson, Assistant Principal Race Officer said: “It was a successful race for the Island Sailing Club and we have received many compliments on running

A HUMBLE CONFESSION SHOCKING. There is no other word for it. Simply shocking. If 1,302 other boats could do it, why did we not join them crossing the finishing line? The Island Sailing Club supported by J.P.Morgan Asset Management and a raft of partners did a brilliant job in planning, promoting and organising every last detail of the Round the Island Race. All we had to do was turn up in Cowes to enjoy the pre-event entertainment, try not to over indulge and crawl into our bunks at a sensible hour. We achieved all of that, even the serial offenders – old and young who had form for seeking late night revelry. “There’s a bit of a blow forecast,” said one, “I don’t want to feel rough before we start,” he enthused. Such common sense – based on thoroughly deserved, self-inflicted previous experiences – was itself a revelation. Falling asleep counting boats, there was just a millisecond of self-belief (or was it self-delusion?). With such a keen crew and a favourable handicap we might dare to contemplate staying behind on Sunday to lift that Gold Roman Bowl! Dream on . . . Being at the back of the fleet has its advantages. There was no queue for the showers. The bacon butties were back on board in record time. All was well with the world. So it was a bit grey and dank but that was forecast with polished wit by Libby Greenhalgh. You could tell she is more accustomed to advising serious sailors who actually seek a breeze. What we didn’t really need was wind gusting stronger than forecast over a tide that turned the western Solent into a roller coaster of bish, bash and splash.

We could have done without the messages from boats ahead about the size of the swell and the strength of gusts past the Needles. We could have done without a rig that was rattling and refusing extra tension. It would have been better if we could have forgotten the promise of stronger winds once the sun had burned off the mist. The number of retirements seemed to be telling us something. Would we soon be the only ones left on the race course? The muttering was getting louder. The pleading eyes were worse than a pack of abandoned puppies looking to be re-homed. The idea of a (very) early pint in Yarmouth was no longer an amusing aside lost on the wind. Ageing bones were beginning to feel the strain. We were short of crew and short of weight. Even our fit foredeck gorilla had sunk deep into his foulies. As the mast and forestay crashed and walloped again I whispered the fateful words. “So what do you want to do?” . . . The options were lost in the scramble to ease the sheets and turn the boat away from the wind. Before I had chance to point out how deliciously peaceful it was as we whimped back to Cowes I was in an arm lock forcing me to call in our retirement. It was them gov, honest! I wanted to carry on. Tell you what though. Cowes at lunchtime on Round the Island Day was a wonderful experience that we had never had before. It makes you want to buy a bigger, faster boat – in time for June 30 2012. Certainly guilty of taking the soft option, apart from our pride, all we lost was one deck shoe that went overboard. As I said: shocking, simply shocking.

Thierry Schmitter from Netherlands racing in the Radial class on day 4 of the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta

MORE than 160 of the World’s top Paralympic sailing talents were ready to stake their claim for supremacy on the London 2012 race course as the IFDS Disabled Sailing Combined World Championships 2011 got underway in Weymouth and Portland on 30 June. More than 90 boats from 30 nations were set to battle it out across the three

Paralympic classes – 2.4mR, SKUD and Sonar – over six days of fierce racing, in what was the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2012 Paralympic Sailing Competition. Many of the sailors had competed at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta earlier in the month, where gold medals went to France’s Damien Seguin (2.4mR),

Australian duo Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch (SKUD) and British trio John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas (Sonar). In the SKUD two-person keelboat Skandia Team GBR’s Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, Skandia Sail for Gold silver medalists were bidding for their third back-to-back Worlds success.

Rickham said: “Obviously it would be wicked to win our third title here, but we’ll just have to wait and see what Weymouth throws at us.” The IFDS Disabled Sailing Combined World Championships 2011 were organised organised, by the RYA, supported by UK Sport. www.ifdsworlds2011.com

She sailed proudly into the marina accompanied by Clare Francis’ famous Robertson’s Golly. In 1976, Clare competed in Robertson’s Golly in the Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race, finishing 13th overall and setting a new women’s single-handed transatlantic record. Lively Lady has been moored on ‘N Pontoon’ so that berth holders and the public can admire her and learn all about her history and future ambitions. Since her construction in 1948, the 11 metre (36-foot) wooden yacht has amassed a wealth of achievements. Premier’s Port Solent marina was specially chosen as her home for years to come to show off both past achievements and her new role as the flagship for Around and Around; a charity that aims to make a difference to disadvantaged young adults with limited opportunities. In 1968 the support of Portsmouth businesses was essential to Sir Alec Rose’s success. In 2008 the people and businesses of Portsmouth were again more critical to the success of The Raymarine Lively Lady Project’s circumnavigation. That project saw 38 young adults from the local area being given a chance to turn their lives around, culminating with the opportunity to sail Lively Lady around the world. That led to the formation of the charity

‘Around and Around’. Headed by Lauren Harris, a graduate of The Raymarine Lively Lady Project, it helps young adults to overcome limitations. They undertake to earn the money to restore, maintain and sail the yacht. In the process they learn about management and teamwork, selfconfidence, organisation and budgeting – all key skills for opening up new opportunities in life. The first goal for the new group of

young adults is to raise the funds for a much needed complete re-fit of Lively Lady. Then, with that achieved, their next goal is another circumnavigation – the third time Lively Lady will have sailed around the world. JD Wetherspoon’s joined in the celebrations by changing the name of their Port Solent pub, Lloyds Number One Bar, to ‘The Sir Alec Rose’. A grand re-opening of the pub followed the arrival of Lively Lady.

Thanks to the generosity of Premier Marinas and The Boardwalk, and their support for the Portsmouth-based charity Around and Around, the marina will now be Lively Lady’s new home.

Recognition for Hayling Island’s WW II heroes

An artist’s impression of how the memorial will look

LATE in 1942, Prince Charles’ great uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Head of Combined Operations, set up a top-secret group of specialist volunteers, based at Hayling Island Sailing Club. This little known unit of less than 200 men was code-named COPP or Combined Operations Pilotage Parties and won over 90 medals and commendations in under three years. Their missions were to carry out top secret reconnaissance sorties on enemy positions prior to amphibious landings throughout the world. Their work saved the lives of countless thousands of allied troops. Their success in remaining undiscovered was so complete that to this day very little is known of their amazing contribution to the Allied war effort. The COPP story is a one of the great adventures of WW2, and plans to create a memorial on the beachside common at Hayling Island are gathering pace. Just three COPP heroes survive, Major, later Major General, Logan Scott-Bowden of the Royal Engineers, Lieutenant Jim Bowden RNVR and Corporal David Owen.

Scott-Bowden is quite frail but Jim Booth and David Owen are well. Most COPP personnel were from either the Royal Engineers or the Royal Navy, and the COPP Heroes Memorial Fund plans to launch a major fundraising drive with the aim of honouring their deeds while they are still with us. In January, HRH Prince Charles, invited the COPP project leader Robin Walton and surviving COPPist Jim Booth, to a meeting at Clarence House, when he expressed his willingness to be the fund’s patron. He also offered his active support and the fund has been offered a magnificent obelisk-shaped block of granite, originally from the Duchy estates in Cornwall. Planning permission has been granted, and the fund is currently seeking a major sponsor for the project. It is estimated that the creation and upkeep of the COPP memorial will cost in the region of £30,000. COPP Heroes Memorial Fund, PO Box 30, Hayling Island PO119UD www.coppheroes.org

NEWS IN BRIEF SOLID HOME

A SEASIDE home with a difference – a cold war nuclear bunker with its own moorings - is up for sale... for £750,000. The bomb-proof former radar control station at Hope Cove, near Salcombe, Devon, with more than 50 teak-floored underground rooms, was built in the 1950s to detect Soviet bombers.

SHARK ALERT

SAILORS and holiday-makers have been warned that a man-eating ocean white-tip shark has been seen in West Cornwall waters and has rammed two fishing-boats and a yacht. The eight-foot-long shark has been sighted several times off St Ives.

AUCTION BARGAINS

AUCTIONEERS Hobbs Parker helped Ramsgate Port Authority raise nearly £40,000 by selling a number of ‘abandoned’ boats. The star performer was ‘Karavee’, which was sold for £20,000. The boats were sold as a last resort after owners either failed to reclaim them or had refused to pay harbour and mooring fees and to clear mooring space for new boat owners.

OWNER FINED

tHe owner of the last UK vessel to trade under sail has been ordered to pay £10,000 for not having enough life-jackets during a daytrip for tourists from Plymouth. Steve Clarke, who has spent over a million pounds on restoring the 110-foot three-masted schooner Kathleen & May, admitted having 24 life-jackets when 27 people were on board. He said that as owner of the 100-year-old vessel he was responsible for her condition although he was not on board at the time and had relied on his professional skipper to check all safety gear. He was fined £6,000 with £4,000 costs.

Textbook rescue for teenager The Hastings lifeboat volunteers rushed to the aid of a teenager after his boat sank

Photo: RNLI

Get in touch with stories from your area: news@allatsea.co.uk HASTINGS lifeboat launched in the early hours of 24 June to rescue a teenager whose vessel had sunk, leaving him stranded in the sea for 15 minutes a quarter of a mile offshore. Dover Coastguard requested the launch of the inshore D class lifeboat, Daphne May, at 4.10am after the 16-year-old had radioed a Mayday signal. The young skipper had been sailing a 13-foot Dory from Hastings to Eastbourne when it began taking on water. The volunteer crew arrived to find the boat had completely sunk, leaving the boy treading water in the sea wearing his lifejacket. Hastings RNLI Coxswain Steve Warne said: “He had a flare to guide the lifeboat in to his position, a quarter of a mile off Bexhill beach. We launched at 4.10am, sighted his flare at 4.26am, and picked him from the sea at 4.27am. He was very, very cold and was shivering profusely, so we warmed him up and took him to Bexhill, where an ambulance we had requested collected him.” Steve added: “We do not know how the vessel came to sink, but thankfully we got to him before he had been in the water too long. “In that sense, this was a textbook lifeboat launch and just goes to show that our volunteer lifeboat crew members are poised and ready to launch at the drop of a hat when someone is in distress, regardless of the time of day or night.”

GREEN FOCUS

A joint BMF and RYA initiative

The Green Blue is the environment programme created by the British leisure marine industry for the benefit of anyone who enjoys getting out on the water

JANE SWAN, THE GREEN BLUE

Did you get yours?

I HAVE to admit I became totally obsessed – checking my bank account every hour to see if LOCOG had taken a small fortune for a handful of Olympic tickets. But the magic deadline passed with no obvious withdrawal and I was pretty narked. Not only had I spent a lot of time and energy earmarking events with military precision but I was (and despite everything still am) a big fan of the Olympics and Paralympics and that alone would surely guarantee me a ticket or two. But no, so I made up my mind then and there not to bother with round two. But just a few days later, sitting high up on The Nothe (the planned ticketed venue for the sailing competition) in Weymouth watching the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in the distance my resolve started to waver. The heady mix of a stunning natural arena with the excitement of three lots of racing going on simultaneously down below and I’m back in the bidding. A flying visit to the actual venue, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, and it was just as exciting to see a sustainable event in action. The academy is the first Olympic and Paralympic venue as well as the first sailing venue in the UK to achieve BS8901 – a British Standards specification for Sustainable Event Management. The Green Blue experienced first-hand how challenging the process was, with Dan, our Sustainability Officer, working closely with academy Chief Executive

John Tweed; firstly to identify the effects of the venue’s activities on the environment, society and economy, both within the academy and the local area, and secondly to agree a raft of measures to ensure that best practice became the norm. Small changes can make a big difference. They include: Instead of the 3,000 disposable plastic water bottles volunteers and officials had their own refillable water bottles. Grapefruit Graphics meticulously applied each bow sticker making sure each strip of backing ended up in the bin rather than blowing into the water. Bins for mixed waste recycling with bright new signs were plentiful and highlighted on the site map. Team Leaders and coaches were reminded about the need to refuel over the green matting at the Dean & Reddyhoff fuel berth and message boards highlighted best practice for minimizing the risk of spreading nonnative invasive species. The most noticeable point about this event is that sustainability was, in fact, barely noticeable (and I mean that as a compliment.) Best practice had been neatly and discretely woven into the fabric of the site and everyday event management tasks. That’s not to underplay the huge efforts of all those involved to get to this point but it really was sustainable excellence in action and will provide a fantastic platform for the sporting excellence to follow next year.

POWER

Business woman and British Power Boat Champion Shelley Jory, from Hampshire, is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the top female in the world. In her spare time she runs a bridal business

SHELLEY JORY-LEIGH

Breaking a promise to return to racing ELEVEN months to the day after that incident in Sardinia that put me out of racing and I found myself going back on my promise to my mum that I would never race again. On June 11 and 12 at the Powerboat P1 SuperStock Jersey Peter’s & May Grand Prix I was back in a boat with my helmet on and waiting for the green flag to drop. It was probably the most difficult event of my racing career to date. Not because of the conditions or the hard racing but for me personally and mentally, as an individual. So here I am, another new boat, new team sponsors – Helvetia Wealth and a new navigator Dan Smith but I still I’m still not sure I’ve got my full racing drive

back I think that may take a while yet. Dan is around half my age and has been around boats all his life. He has been racing Zapcat’s now for the past four years and I wouldn’t have got through the Jersey Race without him. He was really supportive, as were all the team and other racers. The biggest compliment I think I can pay Dan is that I never quite thought that I’d be able to replace the team work and faith that Libby Keir and I had from the year we won the British Honda Championship, but it was like having a male Libby beside me again. We finished fifth overall in Jersey and

we’re now looking forward to the next event at Plymouth on the July 16 and 17. Whether we will win or I will regain the rest of my racing spirit who knows? For now I’m just taking it one race at a time. So whilst I was getting back in the saddle British competitors were making history at the World Championships in Stewartby, Bedford. There were three competitions run over June 18 and 19 and despite the tough racing conditions Team GBR managed five podium finishes. The GT15 Class, which is a new Green Engine class for racers as young as ten,

saw Ben Jelf take the title two days after his 11th birthday and become one of our youngest world champions ever. Charlotte Newton also secured the bronze medal in this class in her first international competition. The Norwegian’s took gold and silver in the GT30 world championship but Britain’s Ben Morse of Lancashire secured his first world bronze medal, adding to his numerous national titles and four European bronze medals. Brits Charlotte Gilbert and Malcolm Goodman finished fourth and fifth respectively. Stewartby also played host to

the third round of the World F4 Championship. Going into the round Britain’s Scott Curtis of Norwich held the lead following wins at the previous rounds in Hungary and France. He secured his hat trick of wins in the championship taking gold and now has a 20 point clear lead ahead of Portugal’s Pedro Fortuna who took silver in the round and lies second in the championship overall table. Bronze for went to promising young racer Matthew Palfreyman who as well as racing in the F4 British Championship is competing for F1 team, Team Atlantic in the F4-S series. Congratulations to Ben, Charlotte, Ben, Scott and Matt and all of the rest of the British competitors.

WEIR QUAY BOATYARD

Weir Quay Boatyard anticipates the arrival of the America’s Cup WEIR Quay Boatyard on the River Tamar is offering special deals on its tranquil deepwater moorings for those who want to combine a delightful cruising destination with a grandstand view of the America’s Cup in Plymouth. For just £200 all-in you can take up ‘residence’ from 10th to 18th September and see all the thrills and excitement of the world’s most prestigious sailing event. And for another £100 you can extend your stay for the whole of September to explore England’s best cruising waters either side of the regatta. “The America’s Cup hasn’t been to this country for 160 years,” said Mike Hooton, owner of the boatyard, “and we want to make sure that those who love sailing have the best chance to enjoy the spectacle from their own boats and, at the same time, introduce them to this wonderful area near to Plymouth Sound.” Half a million people are expected to visit Plymouth for the racing. It is one of only three venues selected for the 34th America’s Cup World Series in 2011 and, of course, the only one in Britain. It has been chosen because of its long maritime history and because the dramatic landscape creates a spectacular natural arena for watching the sport. For the first time, the America’s Cup has been

designed for the enjoyment of viewing fans as well as of the participants. Just six miles upstream from Plymouth Sound, on the Devon bank of the River Tamar, Weir Quay Boatyard provides 100 sheltered deepwater moorings. “What we have tried to create here is a traditional working boatyard with all the modern facilities and services that today’s boat owners expect,” said Mike Hooton. The Yard has an excellent team of experienced marine tradesmen and the best facilities on the South Coast. “Like the America’s Cup,” said Mike, “there is no room for second best.” Visitors for the World Series will find a luxury shower block, a lobby providing internet access through the yard’s own

wi-fi for weather forecasts, keeping up with the racing or even contacting the office. And you can help yourself to a complimentary espresso coffee and enjoy contemporary paintings of the river by the best local artists. For many people this is a once-in-alifetime opportunity and the boatyard aims to make sure that visitors can relax in the confidence that they and their boat are being looked after by marine professionals. There are only a limited number of moorings available to visitors so it is advisable to contact the yard as soon as possible. The moorings can accept any vessel up to 50-feet with a 6-feet 6-inches draft and weighing no more than 20 tons.

M OOforRI N GS the

Peaceful haven in magical natural landscape JOHN and Sue Chadwick arrived home in the early hours of Monday 27th June after an epic Atlantic crossing in their Pan Oceanic 46, Lady Diane. Having encountered difficult weather conditions, a temperamental engine and suffering a burglary in the Caribbean, it was great to be back in the tranquil setting of the Tamar River. “We have done a few crossings and a circumnavigation of the UK,” said John, “but we always feel relieved when we go under the Tamar Bridge in Plymouth and head for our regular mooring at Weir Quay.” Nowadays the Tamar River, which separates Devon from Cornwall, is a peaceful haven for yachts but 150 years ago the Tamar had more shipping and a greater tonnage of cargo than the Mersey and the City of Liverpool. Upstream from Weir Quay, the River bends sharply and starts to wind between a steeply wooded landscape with tantalising mine shafts and chimneys, dating from an era when it was the heart of a thriving industrial mining area. With the industry gone, nature reclaimed the land and now there is little evidence remaining apart from the quaysides on both banks of

the river. The area is protected with every environmental designation – World Heritage Site, European Special Area of Conservation, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Today the Tamar River is a hidden land shared only with the abundant wildlife. For adventurous yachts there are numerous deep pools where you can anchor for the night disturbed only by the occasional passing yacht, jumping salmon or the call of a river bird. Roger and Karen Donkin, who keep their Vancouver 32, Dawn Star, at Weir Quay Boatyard, have fallen in love with the area. “It really is a magical place,” they said, “stunning both on the water and ashore, with plenty of walks. We live 150 miles away,” said Roger “and it is important for us to know that our boat is safe and being well looked after.” With its combination of a team of highly experienced marine tradesmen, comfortable facilities for berth-holders and a stunning location, it isn’t difficult to see why the Chadwicks and the Donkins want to return year after year.

ALL AT SEA JULY 2011

GEOFF HOLT

The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.

YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010

Why it’s a privilege to do what I do I KNOW the new sailing season has started when I struggle to find a slot in my diary to get on the water myself. The past month has been the busiest of the year travelling the country to attend conferences, deliver inspirational talks and work with a variety of charities. It’s exhausting but I wouldn’t have it any other way, I love talking to people and preaching the gospel of getting afloat. A month ago I was delivering a keynote address to the Scottish Sport Development conference in Aviemore. Three hundred delegates but sadly not one representing sailing or any watersports. It was tough, but I think I converted a few of our Celtic cousins from caber tossing to the delights of sailing. Aviemore was beautiful but next time I’ll think twice about getting the overnight sleeper from Euston. On paper a 36-hour round trip to the Highlands was the perfect plan but in practice, trying to sleep in a wheelchair cabin the size of a (2nd class) postage stamp on a train is bordering on comical; it’s certainly not the Orient Express. We arrived back in London at 0630 the following morning looking enviously at the rough sleepers with their cardboard beds and fighting back our indignation

at commuters offering us their small change. A quick wash and scrub and it was back to the London area as special guest at the tenth anniversary of Colne Valley Special Sailors in Rickmansworth. Set inside the M25 in parkland and adjacent to the Grand Union Canal, Bury Lake offers some great sailing opportunities for their disabled sailors. I must confess that I “wince” at the term “Special Sailors” – sorry guys, but you might want to re-think that one before the politically correct posse take you to task – it is a bit patronising. But that aside, what a great group with no shortage of enthusiastic sailors and volunteers. Having Waitrose as a sponsor ensured it was one of the best lunches I’ve ever eaten at a sailing club. A day after my visit, CVSS along with Rudyard Sailability near Leeke, were named winners of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, and well deserved too. Back on the south coast, my schedule was no less relentless. Following a private tour of the RNLI’s HQ in Poole, including the amazing bridge simulator – which made me feel seasick for the first time in 40-plus years – and a tour of the sea survival pool, capable of simulating a

sea-rescue situation in strong winds and metre high waves, it was straight off to Cowes on the IOW for the Old Gaffer’s Festival. I was there as a reporter for the BBC Radio Solent H2O Show which goes out live on a Friday night. Co-host Shelley Jory and I managed to interview just about everyone, our favourites being the French biscuit seller and the West Indian ladies selling curried goat which I demolished on the return ferry to Yarmouth much to the disgust of our producer. The following week I was at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy for the Sail for Gold regatta. As a member of the RYA’s Paralympic Steering Group, it was an opportunity to see our current Team GBR disabled sailors on the water and our future hopefuls too. We weren’t to be disappointed. Our current Team GBR Sonar threeperson crew, skippered by John Robertson claimed the gold medal and our SKUD crew, Niki Birrell and Alexandra Rickham took the silver. All three Paralympic classes were on show and, with competitors from around the world, it was an incredibly tough competition sailed in some strong winds which tested the Olympic and Paralympic sailors equally. Of particular note to all attendees was the number of UK SKUD entries including one skippered and helmed by the indefatigable Keith Harris using only his tongue to steer. It was quite remarkable to watch. A few days later I was sharing the stage again with quadriplegic sailor Alexandra Rickham. I was keynote speaker at a conference called Capture the Wave, organised by Solent University and sponsored by Active Nation. The conference was aimed at children with learning disabilities and was themed around water-based Paralympic sports including swimming, rowing and sailing with lots of speakers clutching their gold medals. The man with the biggest haul, three golds won at the Barcelona Paralympic

Cake cutting at Colne Valley Special Sailors group celebrating their 10th anniversary

games, was swimmer Peter Hull and he was joined by Andy Cassell, gold medalist in the sailing event in Atlanta in 1996. Peter had his three medals professionally framed whilst Andy chose to bring his in his trouser pocket. Potential Paralympic sailing medalist, SKUD sailor Alexandra Rickham was also on hand with rower Gus McKechnie to share their words of inspiration with the kids. What a great day with just about all schools attending winning sailing experiences with Sailability, Southampton Water Activities Centre (SWAC), the UKSA and the Jubilee Sailing Trust. Within two days I was at SWAC myself, this time as an Ambassador for Active Southampton to celebrate the launching of a new Sonar class boat by Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal. Following a tour of their facilities on the banks of the River Itchen and meeting a number of their disabled sailors, she complimented them on their Sailability programme before pouring champagne on the bows of Active Rupert. It never ceases to amaze me how much time and effort she devotes to disabled sailing. Whilst munching my coco-pops one

morning this week, I was particularly moved to see the results of one of my sermons bring about real practical change in a young person’s life. A talk I gave to 800 kids at a local secondary school a few weeks ago resulted in the most heart-warming ending. One of the students, a 14-yearold called Alastair with special needs, was in the audience. I was overwhelmed to hear that, motivated by my talk, he applied along with 200 other applicants from around the UK for one of only six berths on the STS John Laing sailing from Felixstowe to Southampton later this year. The voyages are sponsored by MDL and I’m delighted that Alastair not only won one of the placements, but generously cited me as his inspiration. Let me tell you, as a human being it doesn’t get much better than that to brighten up your day. And that’s what I mean when I say I’m very privileged to do what I do and I love every minute of it. www.geoffholt.com

STICKY’S TIPS

A trainer and teacher throughout his life, Sticky is a Royal Yachting Association qualified Yachtmaster Instructor, a Yachtmaster Ocean

BY STICKY STAPYLTON

A £20 investment in saving lives WHEN I wrote about the man overboard recovery gear which I have been taking with me every time I go sailing for well over 20 years people asked for details. Fortunately I have never had to use it in anger but after my last incident I made up the tackle. During the last 50 years or so I have witnessed a total of five fall overboard, the last time I had three in the water all at once. Sounds a bit disastrous but it was a lovely hot day coming into the River Plym to take a up a berth in the Yacht Haven marina. Our student skipper was helming. It was the last day of the course and he was not really concentrating so we went aground. He was not sure of what to do, so I took the helm, put the three crew on the boom, swung the boom out to heel the boat, and as we shot off the sandbank, the topping lift broke! Fortunately the boat was a 30-footer, so

the toerail was not too high and I hauled the three out of the water pretty quickly. The obvious course would have been to reinforce the topping lift by taking the halyard to the end of the boom but we were on a falling spring tide and I thought it better to get off quickly. The device is a 6:1 tackle with a triple block, becket and cam at the top end and

a triple block, becket and D ring at the lower end with straps to go under the shoulders and knees. The karabiners clip on to the D ring. I normally have it rigged to the spinnaker halyard and secured, ideally, inside the cap shrouds ready for use. It can be taken aft of the spreaders but with some friction against the shrouds when recovering someone. By having it secured forward, there is no need to drop the mainsail, which could accentuate the rolling in any form of sea. The essential is to have the becket and cam attached directly to the halyard, your hauler is then pulling someone out of the water by pulling down on the line which is much easier than hauling up. Every pull on the line is secured on the cam, so those of lesser strength can take a breather if necessary. Getting the halyard the correct length needs thought, because the straps need to be at the right position so that the person in the water can clip the

Karabiners on to the D ring. The advantage of such a system is that the body comes out of the water almost horizontal, hopefully preventing a stroke. If the body is so heavy that the hauler is having real difficulty pulling him out, the fall from the device can be taken through a genoa car and on to a primary winch, and this will make the load much easier to manage. Alternatively, if you can manage a fair lead, and the sea state allows, the line can be taken to the anchor windlass and the motor can ease the strain. The whole set up cost me under £40 20 years ago. Now you are not going to see much change out of £200 but there is always the boat jumble!

RYA FOCUS BY EMMA SLATER

Photo: RYA

ALL AT SEA JULY 2011

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

RYA Sail for Gold – what’s it all about? INSPIRE, Celebrate. Support – is the motto for the RYA’s new Sail for Gold initiative to bring the excitement of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as close to home as possible for the country’s clubs, centres and marinas. With Britain going into the 2012 Games as the world’s top performing Olympic sailing nation once again, the media spotlight is inevitably set to focus on a number of key performers and possible 2012 medallists as the countdown to the games really begins. There has never been a better opportunity to inspire more people to go sailing more often. Sail for Gold provides a framework of national and local on and off the water activities and events in the run up to the games, so clubs and centres can play their part in inspiring new and existing sailors to get out on the water; enable all sailors to really embrace the spirit of the Olympics and show their support for the British sailing team for London 2012. Launched in March so far more than 250 clubs and centres nationwide have already signed up for Sail for Gold, with

volunteer Sail for Gold activators driving their club’s Sail for Gold activity to embrace the build up. The Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta at Weymouth and Portland last month provided the first chance for people to really get into the Sail for Gold spirit, with clubs and centres taking advantage of Medal Race day to create special events. These included Sail for Gold club races, family fun pursuit races, open days, inviting members to bring guests for free and holding social events. Special RYA weblinks enabled clubs to show up to-the-minute regatta news, audio commentary, live tracking, interviews and results in the clubhouse. The RYA also provided unique Sail for Gold medals to give out at their events. Celia Edgington, RYA Sail for Gold Coordinator explained the philosophy behind the programme: “The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games provide the perfect opportunity to showcase and celebrate our sport making people nationwide feel genuinely connected to, and part of this incredible sporting event.

For bareboats: bareboatsailingholidays.com

“Through Sail for Gold we are inspiring the country’s clubs, centres, marinas and boating organisations to run activities to inspire increased participation, whether newcomers or existing sailors sailing more often, and feel a part of something much bigger. “We also want people to recognise just what an incredible, unmatched sailing heritage this country has and enable them to support the team. “We know that not everyone will be able to visit Weymouth and Portland to show their support in person as spectators at the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events so our aim is to provide various ways for everyone to support the British team, as well as get involved in other regional activities.” So what other events are in store for you to watch or take part in for the rest of 2011 and 2012? Find out more about all the events and details on how to get involved or become a Sail for Gold Activator at www.rya.org. uk/sailforgold or check out the latest news on the Sail for Gold Facebook page.

CRUISING A NEW PLACE TO PLAY

Historic waterway is a 21st century playground

Tree-lined tranquility

Party time on the top deck

IF you are already into boating but looking for something different for a holiday, or a total novice, a gentle cruise down a quiet but enchanting inland waterway could be just the ticket. All at Sea’s Bob Satchwell and Sue Baggaley lead a party of 12 in a two-boat rally along the Canal du Midi

PLENTY of sailors dream about it. It’s the sort of thing three men in a boat revel in. Super chef Rick Stein achieved it. Could a disparate crew of 12 men and women with varying degrees of experience do it – and stay friends? The All at Sea summer challenge was to navigate the Canal du Midi that links France’s Atlantic coast with its sundrenched Mediterranean paradise - or a least a bit of it - in a week of pleasurable, laid back cruising. Some of the crew were experienced sailors. There was at least one petrol head power boater. Together with the rest, they were all along for the pleasure. The attraction was to drive a spanking new luxury Beneteau 1500 that is exclusive to Le Boat. It comes complete with thoroughly green credentials, including a hybrid diesel and electric power pack and solar panels. Equally, it would be an experience to enjoy the heritage created by 18th and 19th century military engineers and canal builders whose challenge in developing the waterway through difficult terrain probably matched the task of Parisian politicians down the centuries in taming this distant and delightful province. There was the possibility of a bit of race between two crews but then there was the charming countryside and its products made famous by Rick Stein who ate, drank and cooked his way down the canal for a TV series. Tales of friendly natives and verdant farmland were especially welcoming – and came true. Pictures and videos of the meticulously cultivated ranks of vines sealed the deal. We were on our way! Arriving at Carcassonne in 30-degree sunshine less than two hours after

leaving London Stansted the taxi driver took us to the Le Boat base at Trèbes in 20 minutes, pointing out his favourite bar and wine store. By the time our boats were ready our two crews were perfectly relaxed for choosing cabins and unpacking before heading for the restaurant recommended by the driver. There we were served half a lobster each followed by a mixed grill of fish and a plate of local cheeses – all for 20 Euros a head. One or two glasses of local Minervois or Corbières wine were also taken. Trèbes is perfect for acclimatising for the pace of boating through the delightful French countryside. Don’t rush off. The helpful Le Boat base team will help you practice parking and navigating narrow and low bridges and locks that are little daunting until you have traversed the first one. Then within hours it’s plain sailing.

Tales of friendly natives and verdant farmland were especially welcoming – and came true We soon realised that it is best to make sure you are well provisioned in case you have to wait for the lock keeper to return from a leisurely lunch or you find an idyllic spot for an al fresco meal and siesta. The boats are equipped with plenty of fridge capacity. It was also a case of learning how to manage time when it ticks by extremely

Boaters with a sense of humour

Provisions from a lock keeper

slowly, or stands still altogether. And we needed to learn that a journey of 20km might take two days because of queues at locks and to take into account lunches and early evening closures. Remember that the French may embark on an occasional lock keepers’ strike. But so what? The locals and staff at Le Boat are laid back and friendly. Fellow boaters from all parts of the world were just as relaxed within hours. The mornings are for shopping – fresh bread and croissants from 06:30 if you are near a sizeable village. Some locks offer basic food and drink but the motto is be prepared. But missing the last lock leads to magical evenings enjoying local fare as the sun sinks behind the avenue of trees lining the canal. Marvel at the dark, still and quiet of the night, miles from the nearest village. Summing up, the cruise can only be

described as magnifique! And that just happened to be the name of our second vessel from the Le Boat stable – a standard drive diesel, complete with bow thruster and comfortable for eight adults with room for a couple more. It came complete with air conditioning, well equipped galley and en suite facilities. With maximum speeds of eight kilometres an hour this does not add up to a full-on activity holiday for sailors or power boaters. With a group of close friends, even water sports novices, it can make for a perfect wind-down week of gentle fun accompanied by some of the best fresh food France can provide, washed down by some terrific bargains in a bottle. We may not have travelled far – about 25 miles as the crow flies – but in a few days we had quite a taste of what South West France can offer.

The 15-03 leading the way

Waiting for lock opening time

Tight fit in the lock – the 15-03 and The Magnifique

Thanks to those 18th century canal diggers for their vision and hard work that provides a short cut for UK boats heading to and from the Med. They could not have imagined just what a 21st century leisure facility they were creating from what they saw as a military and economic necessity.

SETTING NEW STANDARDS

THE main purpose of our task – apart from sampling the delights of French cuisine and wine – was to try out Le Boat’s new flagship, the 1500 from Beneteau. It is setting new standards for inland waterways with its hybrid diesel/ electric power pack and hotel standard accommodation. The version we tried can sleep three couples in double cabins with real beds, each with an extra child’s bunk if required. En suite facilities include proper shower cubicles. The dining area also converts into a bed. There is air-conditioning throughout with individual cabin controls. The 1500 can carry water and fuel to last for days. Its galley is as well equipped as a modern home. There is a flat screen TV and DVD player in the open plan living/galley area and in every sleeping cabin. On the Canal du Midi with its ancient locks and tree-lined banks, the sheer size of the 49-footer with its15-foot beam

Conversation under way

and its height and windage, makes some of the narrow low bridges a bit of a challenge. The helmsman has to get down on the deck and remind everyone to duck. We suggested fixing fenders on the extremities of the flybridge as well as the hull. The huge bimini is ideal to temper the blazing sun but must only be used when stopped. Then the 1500 comes into its own with crew and guests tucking into local seafood grilled on the top deck gas barbecue and wine bought at the canal side and kept chilled in the ‘upstairs’ fridge. The large dining tables and sundeck, make the 1500 a real party boat. It is an impressive, eye catching and exciting craft that is possibly more suited to waters that have a bit more space. At first it seems complex with high tech systems to master and remember. But it’s no worse than getting a new laptop. The electric joystick controls make manoeuvring simple and the diesel

engine and generator keep the batteries topped up better than shore power. The price of generous living and sleeping spaces is that it is a bit of trek between the galley and the outside living and lounging areas. But this is top notch boating, not caravanning on the water.

PRICES

ON the Canal du Midi one week’s hire for the Le Boat 15-03 sleeping up to ten people starts at £2,220 in low season and £4,025 in high season. The Magnifique, also sleeps up to ten and ranges from £2,000 in low season to £3,630 in high season. The new 1500 is exclusive to Le Boat and is available in parts of France and Germany in various versions. Le Boat operates across France, in Germany and Holland, Italy Scotland and Ireland and on the Thames. www.leboat.co.uk

There’s a wonderful diversity about the boats which have taken up permanent moorings here... from yachts and superyachts to smaller boats and jet skis and even a barge

Chris (left) and Hilary (right) Monk who are among the marina’s first customers

A DISUSED part of the Port of Poole has been transformed into a new marina housing 60 metre super-yachts and smaller vessels. The Port of Poole Marina is up and running and almost all of its berths have been snapped up. The marina, which occupies the old RoRo Brittany Ferries berth, is in a peaceful spot within easy reach of the vibrant Poole Quay and will provide a base for sailing enthusiasts visiting the 2012 Games along the coast at Weymouth and Portland. Henry Cobley, Bosun at the marina, said: “This is a really exciting time for us as we welcome new guests from all over the UK. A limited number of berths are still available. “There’s a wonderful diversity about the boats which have taken up permanent moorings here... from yachts and superyachts to smaller boats and jet skis and even a barge.” John Binder of Poole Quay Boat Haven, the company behind the project, said: “We’re delighted with the quality of our new marina. Local labour and materials have been used as much as possible; the floating breakwater was constructed in Southampton and we’ve been able to re-use a top quality pontoon which was used at the Southampton Boat Show. “The marina was designed by Walcon and we’ve taken great care both to protect the environment during construction and to create a top class marina.” The £1 million project has created space for 59 boats and 15-20 RIBs and personal watercraft. It features a pontoon with hardwood decking and fibre concrete floats, fully serviced with water and electricity. A free RIB taxi service operates to nearby Poole Quay and there are toilets, showers and parking on site. Dredging work was carried out by Poole Harbour Commissioners, electricity and water supplies installed by Maricer and the demolition was carried out by Dorset-based Kavell-Civil Engineers.

HOW TO GET THERE BY SEA

Once in Poole Harbour follow the middle ship channel. The marina entrance is located to the west of the ‘Stakes’ southerly cardinal marker.

BY ROAD

From Poole follow the signs for the ferry terminal and, once you’ve crossed the lifting bridge, turn left at the roundabout and head east along New Quay Road. The Port of Poole Marina is the turn off after the main ferry terminal.

Kerrie Gray and Henry Cobley of the Port of Poole Marina

IDEAL BASE FOR EXPLORERS

CHRIS and Hilary Monk from Lilliput in Poole are among the first customers to moor their boat at The Port of Poole Marina. They keep their ten metre sailing yacht Deben Eclipse there and told All at Sea it was the ideal location from which to explore the Dorset coastline. Chris, the manager of an oilrig, added: “We only bought the boat a year ago and have been looking for somewhere to keep her. This new marina came along at just the right time. “The marina is very accessible and is a great spot from which to explore the harbour. It’s very well set up and has everything we need. “Having the boat somewhere that’s so easy to reach by road and so close to home means that, when we’re not working, we can manage a day of sailing and still return home in time for the school-run.”

SMALL AT SEA JUST FOR KIDS

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Boating is great fun and anyone can learn. You might already have a favourite activity but there are lots of different types of boating that you can try. Here are just a few to think about . . . DINGHY SAILING

This is great way to get started and begin to learn the ropes. Dinghies are small sailing boats that come in all shapes and sizes. You can sail on your own, with a friend, or even with your whole family.

WINDSURFING

You can do this off the beach, on a lake and lots of other places. It’s pretty simple to learn, although you might get quite wet while learning! But don’t worry you’ll soon get the hang of it.

YACHTS

These bigger boats are great for hanging out with your family, whether you are on holiday or just for the weekend. They come in all shapes and sizes; why not have a look in your local marina to see just how big some are!

PERSONAL WATERCRAFT

You might know these as jet skis and boy are they are great fun. As long as you are with an adult, you can whizz around and have fun all day long. Chances are you may have seen them buzzing around down at the coast or when you have been on holiday – next time it could be you!

INLAND WATERWAYS

You and your family can travel around on canals, rivers and estuaries, seeing both towns and countryside as you go. Before trains, this is how heavy goods were sent around the country, but now it’s just for fun.

RIBS AND SPORTSBOATS

These are powered by a motor and can go very fast. For now you might have to be a passenger, depending upon your age, but as you get older you can have lots of fun exploring with your friends in one of these.

MOTOR CRUISERS

Great for getting out on the water with your family they come with all the comforts of home. You are able to sleep, cook and eat on board, which means you can travel to much more distant places.

SO WHERE CAN YOU LEARN ALL THESE GREAT ACTIVITIES?

The best way is to find an RYA recognised Training Centre; there are hundreds across the country that offer courses for people as young as eight. Why not get your parents to take you along to a club near you so you can find out more? You might also like to get involved in one the RYA’s youth programmes. OnBoard is all about introducing sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 16, or perhaps Team15 is more up your street if you fancy doing more windsurfing. Maybe the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is more your style; demonstrating your skills and speed on the water in a RIB. To find out more visit the RYA website www.rya.org.uk but remember whatever you choose to do, HAVE FUN!

SAILING AROUND THE UK AND IRELAND

REEDS KNOT HANDBOOK A POCKET GUIDE TO KNOTS, HITCHES AND BENDS

THIS handy pocket guide contains all the most useful knots you’ll need whether on board or at the dockside. Each knot is broken down into clear step-by-step illustrations, with a photo of the finished knot and background information on its strengths, weaknesses, and when best to use it. A perfect aide-memoire for experienced sailors, and the ideal learning tool for novices. Including: • Overhand knots and hitches • Figure-of-eight knots • Bowlines and bends • Crossing knots • Wrap and tuck knots • Other useful knots for all situations Whether a knot is strong under load, quick to release, works well in wet conditions or works with different types of rope or cord, you will be able to select the correct knot for every situation. This book is a treasure trove

of knots packed with information! Jim Whippy is a former magazine editor and author of Sea Fishing, published by Adlard Coles Nautical. He also presents DVDs and is a selector for the England sea angling team. Publishing date: 15 July 2011 Price: £7.99 ISBN: 978 1 408 13945 5 128pp •pbk • 160x 100 mm

BASED on a highly successful series of articles, this is a detailed practical guide to sailing around the UK by means of day sails. Roger Oliver, a passionate sailor, explains his in-depth passage planning, boat preparations, weather checks and log-keeping, as well as his choice of routes, the detailed navigation, sail trim tips and on-passage maintenance, all for the benefit of sailors who have a yearning to follow in his footsteps. Packed with a wealth of practical tips, this new edition has been expanded with a whole section devoted to an alternative route north. Covering the east coast of Ireland, Rathlin Island, Oban and the Outer Hebrides, this book remains a godsend to the many thousands of sailors who enjoy coastal cruising, and shows that it is perfectly possible to cruise around the whole of the UK in a series of day sails. With this book to hand, and inspired by Roger’s detailed route maps and spectacular photographs, anyone can experience the thrill and enjoyment of sailing around the beautiful and varied UK coast from any starting point. Roger Oliver is passionate about sailing. He has sailed a variety of boats over the years and has cruised the French coast, the Mediterranean and North Africa. He has now circumnavigated the UK twice, solo, in a 25-foot Sadler, covering a distance of 4,800 miles. He writes regularly for Practical Boat Owner magazine and is an active RNLI fundraiser. IN THE DRINK

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink

BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Italian style al fresco summer drinking ITALY now beats France for the title of world’s biggest wine producer but in the UK Italian wines seem to be bypassed for the established French regulars and the rush to Australian and even Chilean alternatives. There is much more to the Italians than the Chianti-in-a-basket holiday souvenir and there is much more to the Chianti offer than that, too. With such a longitudinal spread to the country from the Alps to Sicily, there is great variety in terroir, grapes and wines. There are 20 official regions and the resulting wine classifications are convoluted and confusing. For now, start with Tuscany and Veneto. Tuscany, roughly in the middle of the country, is the birth place of Chianti and generally considered the wine capital of Italy. Veneto, spreading inland from Venice, is also acclaimed for its top quality wines. Italian wines are generally lighter and more delicate than the French and new world wines and well suited to summer time al fresco eating and drinking. Valpolicella de Veneto is fruity and clean and was much enjoyed at a Royal Wedding barbecue at our local sailing club, back when summer first arrived in England. Merlot de Veneto is medium bodied and an

easy drinker. Merlot is, of course, a French grape variety being grown in Italy. So the Italian Merlot is a sort of hybrid but it works, producing a very clean and fresh wine.

There is much more to the Italians than the Chianti-in-a-basket holiday souvenir In Tuscany, the wine growers also mix in some French grapes with their Italians but this puts the wines outside the official classifications and they are classed as lowly ‘vino da tavola’ (table wines of uncertain quality). But wine buffs rave about the result so much so that they have gained their own name as ‘Super Chianti’, meaning ‘outside of’ rather than necessarily superior. But well worth seeking out. My local supermarket has the Valpolicella 12 per cent abv, with a fun “I’m Italian” gondola graphic label at £6, and the Merlot 11.5 per cent, featuring the Tower of Pisa (strange, as Pisa is the other side of the country) at a bargain £4.20. No doubt the labels will be different in your supermarket, but think Italian, Veneto or Tuscany and about £6 a bottle, and check out Chianti, and you will find nice summer wines for al fresco fun.

BUYER BEWARE THERE I was in the supermarket looking for wine bargains when a nice looking First Cape Australian bottle caught the eye. Brightly flagged as the ‘Café Collection’ it is, as they claim, quite bright and fruity – but when we came to the taste-test we realised it is only 5.5 per cent abv. It does say “alcohol reduced” on the label but it is easy to miss, and was priced about the same as other reasonably priced fullstrength wines. It was nice enough drink, but do not expect full-bodied wine. It’s in an attractive looking bottle, the name might suggest South African but it is not, so buyer beware.
