LUNA ROSSA passing Fastnet Rock in the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race
THE 44th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race was set to break a record before the start. The 350 entrants preparing for the start from Cowes on August 14 means the 1979 record-breaking tally of 303 yachts will almost certainly be broken. Entries were closed within ten days of opening in January but after being inundated with additional enquiries from Volvo Open 70s, the IMOCA 60s, Class 40s and multihulls to join the 608-nautical mile marathon, organisers at the Royal Ocean Racing Club adjusted the entry limit. at 10:50 BST. While the fastest crews will hope to spend only one or two nights at sea, those at the back of the pack may have nearly a week in often punishing waters. The fastest boat on the water will be the 100-foot trimaran, Banque Populaire form France which broke the round the Britain Isles record by almost a day and a half. But the race for monohull line honours is expected to include two other 100-foot challengers: Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard from Britain, the first elapsed-time finisher in the past two races, and arch-rivals George David’s
Rambler 100 from the USA. A head-to-head battle in the Transatlantic Race saw Rambler 100 ease to line honours after ICAP Leopard lost her bowsprit. But while the two ocean greyhounds are clear monohull line honours favourites, they may not have it all their own way. There is the significant presence of six Volvo 70s, and the Mini Maxi class including defending Rolex Fastnet handicap winner, Britain’s 72foot Rán owned by Niklas Zennström. About a third of the entries are nonBritish crews showing the global pull of the event, with yachts competing from
the following Austria, Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the UAE and the USA. The main trophy for overall victory is the Fastnet Challenge Cup and there are more than 30 additional trophies that will be awarded at the prize giving on Friday, 19 August at the historic Royal Citadel, home of the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, overlooking Plymouth Sound and Sutton Harbour, where the majority of the fleet will berth. WANDERLUST RULES OK COLUMBUS had it. So did the likes of Magellan, Drake, Cook, and a plethora of less well remembered names . . . and don’t forget the Vikings. It’s called wanderlust and thankfully it still exists. Certainly the 450 people who set sail on the latest edition of the 40,000-mile Clipper Round the World Race have it in abundance.
onEdition
We might think it is a bit easier for these latter day adventurers. Their 68-foot yachts are equipped with all that modern technology can provide for construction, sails and communications technology. Above all, they know where they are going . . . and they know they will be back in Southampton on July 22 next year. None of this detracts from the challenge. Remember that there are still more people who have climbed Everest than have sailed around the globe in a small yacht. Whatever you might believe about global warming, the forces of nature are no less powerful than when those historic trailblazers set sail. To be brave you have to know what you are risking. Without questioning their courage, that’s one thing our forebears did not fully understand. They were sailing into the unknown. Indeed in 1519 Ferdinand Magellan set off to find the riches of the east by sailing . . . west, heading off beyond the limits of the known world. While he is credited with being the first to circumnavigate, Magellan did not make it back to Europe. He was killed in a fight with islanders in the Philippines in 1521.
Only 18 of his 260 men returned. For more than 50 years no one else attempted a circumnavigation. That was left to Francis Drake who left England in 1577 to rob Spanish treasure ships on their way home from South America. He was also hoping to find a northern short cut to the East. He decided not to return the way he had come in case Spanish ships were waiting to attack him. He sailed across the Pacific and back to England by rounding Africa. When he reached London in 1580, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I. So untold riches and political power were the extra motivation for those early explorers. There were many other adventures in later centuries for science, for trade and to build empires. Joshua Slocum did it alone and for fun between 1895 and 1898. Then came the late 20th century solo exploits of Francis Chichester, Alec Rose and Robin Knox-Johnston. Sir Robin was the first person to sail single handed and non-stop around the world between 14 June 1968 and 22 April 1969. While he lost contact for months he had thoughtfully stocked up with whisky and cigarettes. It was his exploits, along with those of Chay Blyth, the first to go round the wrong way against prevailing winds and tides, that lit the flame. Record breaking women have fuelled the fire. Dame Ellen MacArthur set records as did Dee Caffari who did it in both directions and is the only woman to have done it alone three times. There may be no Spanish treasure left to plunder and empire building is out of fashion but there is still adventure beyond the reach of 21st century comforts. But don’t switch off Facebook and Twitter . . .
Major refit for HMS Victory THE first steps in restoring the rigging and masts of HMS Victory took place last month when the fore topgallant yard and fore topsail yards were removed from the ship. Bell Rigging, sub-contractors for BAE Systems oversaw the work. The ship’s three masts, bowsprit and rigging will all be dismantled. The last time HMS Victory was seen without her top masts was back in 1944. The National Museum of the Royal Navy’s Director General, Professor Dominic Tweddle said: “We are determined that Victory will be open to
the public throughout so that they can share in excitement and even thrills of the restoration story.” Most of the highly skilled operation will be carried out by master shipwrights and other specialist staff employed by BAE Systems who, while operating on the cutting edge of technology on modern warships, maintain the age-old wooden shipbuilding skills. John O Sullivan, BAE Systems Project Manager for HMS Victory, said: “We will remove the upper sections of all three masts and bowsprit, booms, yards and spars, including 26 miles

Answer the survey THE RYA is urging sailors to take part in the Sport England Active People telephone survey if requested to help raise the profile of sailing across the nation. “We are asking sailors and windsurfers who receive a call to participate in the Active People Survey to not hang up the phone but to stay on the line and agree to take part, so Sport England can get accurate results for the number of people
who take part in the sport,” said RYA Sport Development Manager Jon White. “Results from the last Sport England Survey show that there are 68,000 people who participate in sailing at least once a week, and our research shows us that more than 850,000 people are out there enjoying the sport over the course of a year.” http://www.sportengland.org/research/ active_people_survey.aspx

Get in touch with stories from your area: editor@allatsea.co.uk THE Royal Yacht Squadron, the historic club that dominates Cowes seafront with its starting cannons has announced its first offshore race. The inaugural Biscay Race will form part of the Atlantic Ocean Racing Series. Competitors are required to take part in three races, including the Transatlantic Race to qualify for a series victory. The Biscay Race is also open to any yacht only wishing to compete in this historic race. Organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron with the help of Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo in Northern Spain, the Biscay Race will start from the Squadron line at midday on Sunday 11 September and finish off the yacht club in Sanxenxo. RYS Commodore Yachting, David Aisher said: “The Royal Yacht Squadron was the only club that did not have a race that was a part of this AORS circuit. “On the East side of the Atlantic, the RORC was the Organising Authority for the Rolex Fastnet and was also a part of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Between the two races was a large gap in the sailing calendar that we felt was an ideal opportunity for the RYS to run its first offshore race.” “The RYS has for many years been organising some of the best inshore regattas in the UK and we needed to show that we could also run a first rate offshore event as well.” www.rys.org.uk

PETER Rutter and the crew of the Grand Soleil 43, Quokka 8, comfortably secured the 2011 IRC National Championship title as well as victory within IRC 2 in the IRC National Championships held in Cowes in three days of blustery Solent conditions with the wind rarely dropping below 20 knots. One of the favourites in IRC1, Jonathan Goring’s new Ker 40, Keronimo, put conditions to the test when she was nailed by a squall, causing her to reenact the famous pitchpole of Silk II, as captured on camera by Beken of Cowes. Tactician Simon Shaw said: “A big black cloud was chasing us down the run when the wind went from 26 to pretty much 40 knots... “It was a bit like watching one of those Extreme 40 capsizes - you are on top
of the world looking down at the boat, holding on to the runners with your legs dangling down into the cockpit going ‘hang on I thought this only happened on catamarans!’” Keronimo teetered in her pitchpoled position for what seemed like 10 seconds, her bow buried so deeply into the water that the instrument displays on her mast were submerged. “We lost one guy off each side and one off the bow,” continued Shaw. “So we scooped everyone back in, wrestled the chute down over the back, pulled the jib up, bore away and carried on with the race.” Keronimo finished the regatta in third place. Hat trick of ferries WORlDWIDe boat transportation and logistics firm PSP scored a hat trick transporting three ferries across the world in as many months. PSP, based in Hampshire and sponsor of the Southampton Boat Show had its work cut out as it moved more than 350-tonnes worth of ferry. the hat trick kicked off in May when PSP transported two catamaran ferries from the UK to Russia. the two 40-metre ferries, which previously served as the
Fastcats from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight, were delivered alongside the transportation vessel in Southampton and lifted directly on to the deck, using the ship’s own cranes. the ferries reached Sochi in Russia after two weeks and will be used as passenger ferries in the Black Sea. the PSP team was then commissioned to transport a 95-tonne catamaran ferry from South Korea to turkey where it was shipped on a Russian river boat to Aktau in Kazakhstan.

Scotland’s first 484-mile party
THE Tall Ships Races Cruise in Company arrived in Shetland waters and the guest harbours of Fair Isle, Scalloway, Yell, Unst and Whalsay last month at the end of their leisurely leg between Greenock and Lerwick. Scotland’s west coast harbours of Campbeltown, Oban and Ullapool, Stornoway on Lewis, and the Orkney
towns of Stromness and Kirkwall were buzzing with the visiting ships and their followers). The ships were welcomed in the guest harbours, giving the ship crews and trainees a taste of the more remote parts of Scotland and creating a huge boost to the local economies. The Tall Ships Races 2011 is organised
by Sail Training International a charity with a purpose in the development and education of young people, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background, through sail training. The Cruise in Company leg between Greenock and Lerwick was the first party in Scotland to stretch for 484
Twinned with hussars THE Commodore of the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Commanding Officer of The King’s Royal Hussars celebrated their formal twinning at a ceremony held at the Club House in Hamble, Hampshire at the end of last month. The twinning seeks to establish and maintain friendly relations between the club and the armoured regiment and to promote sailing, social, educational and youth exchanges. The club is celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2012 and the Army link lies in the strong historical connection they share in the figure of James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan. He commanding officer of the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own), now amalgamated into KRH and Commodore of the Royal Southern Yacht Club between 1847 and 1854. He was still commodore when he led the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade. The KRH, based in Tidworth, Wiltshire, recruits many of its soldiers from the Southampton and Hamble area. The regiment deployed to Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Iraq and is raining for possible action in Afghanistan next year.

The 2011 Tall Ships Race started in Waterford, Ireland at the end of June, calling at Greenock and the Cruise in Company to Lerwick, then to Stavanger, Norway, with the series due to finish in Halmstad, Sweden on 8 August. www.tallshipsraceslerwick.com/ cruise-in-company
ROCKING THE BOAT
ROCK legend Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones visited HMS Victory in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with his family. He wanted to go on board having remembered seeing it on a school trip. He grew up reading C. S. Forester’s novels about Horatio Hornblower and then later Patrick O’Brian’s novels on which ‘Master and Commander’ was based. He also starred in two of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films as Captain Jack Sparrow’s father.

The yacht club will provide sailing opportunities and instruction to young soldiers and provide a completely different challenge for them as well as raising funds for regiment’s appeal to support injured soldiers in times of hardship. The soldiers paraded their Guidon – a light cavalry equivalent to Colours –
through the Hamble, accompanied by a 22-strong Guard and musicians of the Light Cavalry Band together with a VIP Ceremonial Party. They marched down Green Lane to the Quay where a Panther armoured vehicle and a recruitment station was based. www.royal-southern.co.uk www.krh.org.uk

Gipsy Moth IV departure on second circumnavigation to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Francis Chichester’s solo one-stop circumnavigation
Photo: Barry Pickthall/PPL
GIPSY Moth IV is to join the Michelmores Challenge Cup, the annual corporate invitation event which regularly attracts more than 50 boats to Torbay in early September. In 1967 Sir Francis Chichester sailed the 53foot Gipsy Moth IV into the record books and captured the world’s imagination with his solo circumnavigation of the world. Amongst the records he set were fastest voyage around the world by any small vessel and the longest non stop passage by a small sailing vessel. Now in its 21st year, the Michelmores Challenge raises money for the UK Sailing Association, the charity dedicated to changing lives through personal development and maritime education, through contributions from competing yachts. Jeff Nicholls, event organiser and Business Development Manager at Michelmores, said: “We normally generate around £5,000 for the charity but this year we thought we could improve on that by offering the opportunity to crew on Gipsy Moth IV at £500 a go.” UKSA are providing two professional sailors and two places will be taken by young people UKSA are supporting leaving four other berths available. The 21st annual challenge is hosted by Brixham Yacht Club and takes place on Saturday 3 September. Entry details can be obtained by e-mail at jeff.nicholls@michelmores.com

NEWS AUGUSt 2011
TORBAY RNLI crew volunteer Nigel Crang, 45, is to receive the Thanks of the Institution on Vellum after the dramatic rescue in May of two people from a grounded yacht in breaking seas. Two other volunteers who were on board the D class inshore lifeboat, John Heale, 35 and Will Bower, 37, will be presented with Framed Letters of Thanks from the RNLI Chairman. There will also be written recognition for Richard Fowler, the Second Coxswain of the allweather lifeboat, as he and his crew stood by during the rescue. The incident happened on Sunday 1 May when the lifeboat crews were paged to the two crew of the yacht Blithe Spirit that was aground on Corbyn’s Head. Both the all-weather and inshore lifeboat crews were launched at 2.55pm and found the yacht had grounded head to sea with waves breaking over her. Fortunately the crew were suitably dressed and wearing lifejackets. Immediately it was decided no attempt should be made to tow the yacht off and that it would not be possible to get the Severn class all-weather lifeboat Alec and ChristinaDykes close enough because of the breaking swell and the rocky conditions. This left the volunteer crew of the Torbay RNLI D class inshore lifeboat John William Hirst to take on the job of rescuing the two sailors. Nigel Crang, who has been an RNLI volunteer for 23 years, made two attempts to veer the inshore lifeboat to the yacht using one line attached to the bow of the all-weather lifeboat and another to the inshore lifeboat anchor. However, the all-weather lifeboat had to manoeuvre in the swell, which meant it wasn’t stable enough to give Helmsman Crang full control of the inshore lifeboat. The inshore lifeboat was temporarily driven hard

Award for torbay helmsman aground twice, causing propeller damage and was also filled with water. Having confirmed the damage had not reduced the lifeboat’s capability, Nigel Crang decided to approach the yacht holding the lifeboat steady via its own anchor. As the yacht was approached, a wave washed into the lifeboat, driving it hard aground and causing the anchor to break free. One of the crew volunteers, John Heale, jumped on to the rock and pushed the lifeboat away as the receding wave didn’t carry it clear. The yacht’s situation was getting worse by this stage. Helmsman Crang took the sudden opportunity of a brief lull in between the waves to drive the inshore lifeboat alongside the stricken vessel and take the man off the yacht. The woman who was on the higher windward side of the yacht, was then persuaded to move to the lower side and successfully recovered into the lifeboat. Both were put safely ashore. The yacht subsequently broke up. Adrian Carey, RNLI Divisional Inspector for the south west, said it was a daring rescue: “Despite suffering several setbacks the crew volunteers showed great perseverance to achieve a successful outcome and it just shows the value of the RNLI’s continuous crew training programme.”

WALK AND TALK
BACK in the 80s, a walkie talkie (or a two-way radio) was a bit of a misnomer. You could walk or you could talk but you couldn’t do both. In fact, if you walked out of earshot of the person you were attempting to speak to, the box in your hand became nothing but a crackle-emitting brick. So it is with the utmost delight that we have WIRE rope specialist, Tecni-Cable, has launched a new security cable system discovered Motorola’s new products. fitted with a 16mm diameter ‘bullet eye’, enabling it to be threaded through The TLKR T6 (the model between the T4 and the T8) has a range of up to 8km – and almost anything without catching and snagging. The flexible wire rope, built having spent the best part of three months playing with these things, it’s difficult not from 6mm marine grade stainless steel, is coated to 10mm diameter in a grey to be impressed. The set comes with rechargeable NiMH batteries, a dock for the two PVC coating that protects the finish of whatever you’re locking up. handsets and a choice of eight channels, plus a hands-free facility and a backlit LCD The cable has a two-tonne breaking load and yet it’s far lighter than display. Small, tough (and also rather stylish), the TLKR T6 is splash-proof, shock-proof a regular chain of similar strength – and it will resist corrosion, even in and easy to attach to your gear via the belt clip or the loop. Reception is great, with seawater. The standard length of most security cables is two metres, but the clear voices and good volume – and of course, no licence or operation fee is required to Tecni-Cable can be ordered online in lengths of up to 100 metres. You just use them. pick the length you want, match it to whatever lock suits your needs and Pop it in a bag to make it waterproof and buoyant and this is the perfect tool for Tecni-Cable will make your product within 24 hours. GREEN FOCUS
A joint BMF and RYA initiative
The Green Blue is the environment programme created by the British leisure marine industry for the benefit of anyone who enjoys getting out on the water
SARAH BROWN, THE GREEN BLUE
A wild life on the West Coast THE sun was beating down as I arrived at James Watt Dock in the Clyde, the stream of visitors tumbling out of the railway station gates pointed me towards the heart of the festival and the masts towering over head told me I had arrived at the Tall Ships Race 2011. Now all I had to do was find the right boat . . . The Green Blue likes to get to the heart of everything to do with boats, whether it is your sewage we are interested in or the antifoul on your bottom we do not hesitate to get stuck in, if you will forgive the terrible imagery. And so it was with the Tall Ships. I had sent an invitation to all captains offering to give a free talk about the wildlife of the west of Scotland, hoping to inspire and inform, to help people both understand and respect the wildlife they
might see as they sailed up to Lerwick. Several boats had responded and the organisers had also asked me to give a talk at the briefing. My heart was in my mouth, these are serious sailors who have seen a lot, and English was not necessarily their first language. Not only that but their crews were made of up mostly 14-16 year olds and we all know they know EVERYTHING! The sun beat down as I clambered as nimbly as I could to the first boat, laptop and projector on my back alongside our new wildlife guide. I knocked on the deck, called a ‘Hello’ and peered into the depths below to be greeted by 30 sets of expectant eyes around the saloon table. “Come on down!” the captain boomed. I obliged with slightly shaky legs wondering what I had let myself in for. I should not have worried. My welcome
on that ship and the following six that I visited over the next two days was exceptional. I was treated to enthusiastic and inquisitive audiences. I was given cold drinks and cake when my energy seemed to be flagging and time after time I found myself swept up in their enthusiasm for boats, wildlife and the sea in general. We were running a wildlife spotting competition for the crews up to Lerwick and they were eager to take the challenge. However, one first mate did ask me if the competition extended to the local ‘wild’ life. “Why?” I asked. “I met this man the other day,” my new Estonian friend told me, “His Scottish accent was so strong. He said something to me which sounded like “grrrrrm, grrrr, rrrr”.
Photo: Sarah Brown
The Green Blue at Greenock for the Tall Ships Festival
“I told him my English was not so good so could he speak more slowly? He nodded and smiled and said, “GRRRRRM………GRRR…….RRRRR”, it was much slower but the noises were just the same! I understood so little it was like talking to the seals!” My thanks goes all those who welcomed me so warmly. May you have
fair winds and safe anchorages, and great wildlife. My praise and thanks also go to the organisers for a fantastic event which has brought much to the area and continues to do much to develop those who take part in the race, perhaps next time they come to the Clyde I will include a phrase book in with the wildlife guide! www.thegreenblue.org.uk

AT 11 years old Ben Jelf has already achieved what most of us strive to do throughout our sporting careers. In just three short years of powerboat racing Ben has secured multiple national and club heat wins and has two RYA British titles to his name in the 2010 National JT250 and JT250 National Sprint Championship. If that wasn’t already a phenomenal achievement in such a short career, only half way through the 2011 season Ben became Britain’s youngest ever UIM World Powerboat Champion in the GT15 circuit racing class, joining the elite in the records books just two days after his 11th birthday. But Ben from Maidstone, Kent, didn’t stop there. Last month he was also declared the first ever GT15 European Champion at Estonia winning all of his four heats. The formidable young man is the 60th British racer to enter the UIM world rankings with several holding multiple titles to their names and I’m sure it won’t be long before Ben has many more international titles to his name like his father Colin before him. Some people fall into powerboat racing but I think it’s safe to say Ben was born into it! The Jelf powerboat racing dynasty started with Ben’s Grandfather Ted Jelf who started offshore powerboat racing in 1966. He then moved over to circuit racing in 1976.

and making sure the racing is as safe as possible. Ben is like any normal 11-year-old boy, who likes Xbox, Lego, fast cars, biking and of course boats. He’s a modest young man who knows the value of his achievements but hasn’t let being world champion go to his head. He has a fantastic racing career ahead of him but knows he’s going to have to work hard to continue to remain at the top of the leader board. I can’t wait to see where Ben’s powerboat racing career goes next and it’s one I will follow closely as I’m sure he’s destined for big things. Well done Ben and all of Team Jelf Racing you’ve done the sport and country proud! Follow Ben’s progress on the Jelf Racing Website www.jelfracing.com or on Facebook www.facebook.com/JelfRacing

In 1977 Ben’s uncle Owen started racing in the J250 class and three years later was joined on the race circuit by little brother Colin. In 2008 Colin made the history books for being the first driver to achieve the triple F2 World Championship. He has also achieved two British Sprint Championships in a row in 2007 and 2008, in addition to winning the 2008 Continental Championship, where he won three out of the four races. 2011 has also seen Ben’s cousins Jessica and Bethany Stoneman begin competing together in the UKFFORC Offshore Series in the F400 Class. But the family’s love of powerboat racing doesn’t just stop on the water. Ben’s mum, Jeni is chairman of the RYA Circuit Racing Committee and is also a very well respected officer of the day and RYA commissioner running race events

ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2011
GEOFF HOLT
The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.
YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010
Wetwheels ready to float IT WAS following my column in All at Sea last November entitled “My Powerful Secret” that I took a call from Sean Strevens, MD at Cheetah Marine. The article weighed up the benefits of various options for disabled people to get afloat in powerboats of differing shapes and sizes. I had concluded that, in my view, Cheetah catamarans were the best option whilst qualifying my choice by stating: “I always did have champagne tastes and lemonade pockets”. Less than a month later I was at the Cheetah yard in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, discussing ways to build a boat which could take disabled people power boating. With generous sponsorship from Cheetah Marine themselves, Suzuki Marine offering to provide, free of charge, twin 200 HP engines and Raymarine providing the complete suite of electronics. I signed the order for my nine metre boat there and then. Last week, I saw my new boat, to be called Wetwheels, fresh from her moulds. She is due to make her debut at the PSP Southampton Boat Show in September and will thereafter operate out of Portsmouth providing opportunities for disabled people to get afloat. The observant among you will notice that I have started a new fashion craze, the half-trouser. No, it’s not a Monty Python tribute but a medical necessity. Unfortunately my electric wheelchair picked a fight with a wall. My right leg, an innocent bystander, was the only casualty resulting in a broken leg. OK, so being paralysed is the reason I use a wheelchair in the first place, but on the positive side, I didn’t feel the bone snap, although I did hear it. And seeing your foot pointing backwards does make you feel a bit queasy. Ambulance driver Fred was first on the scene and, learning my name, said proudly that I had made his day as hours earlier he had been reading my latest column in All at Sea. After an operation and despite orders to rest the leg, I couldn’t resist popping over to the Isle of Wight to see Wetwheels born, well, you have to get your priorities right, don’t you?
DIARY DATES
INSPIRING REGATTAS JULY was a busy month for Bolton Sailing Club. More than 80 children with learning and physical disabilities from Pendle Community High School descended on the club for their annual sailing week. For many of the children, this was their first experience of getting afloat and they
did so in a mix of sailing dinghies and powerboats. Warren Price, RYA Sailability Regional Organiser for the NW said: “The children’s reaction to being on the water was wonderful to see, pure enjoyment. Their smiles told the story more than any words could. “ A fortnight later and once again
Bolton Sailing Club played host, this time for the Lancashire Special Schools Sailing Regatta. Twelve children with moderate learning disabilities represented six schools in the county. After an hour of instruction, all six schools took to the water for an exciting pair of races sailing two-person Access dinghies.
Presenting the prizes was Dave Williamson, Chairman of the RYA NW Executive Committee and Keith Roberts, Commodore of Bolton sailing club. Pendle Community High School represented by sailors Daniel Barrett and Zak Green took first place, Sir Tom Finney Community High School second, and Astley Park School third.
Friday 16 to Sunday 25 September Debut of my fully wheelchair accessible powerboat Wetweels at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. Visit the Suzuki Marine “Try a Boat” stand. Saturday 12 November “An Evening with Geoff Holt” at the Royal Maritime Club, Portsmouth, in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and Simon Says charities. STICKY’S TIPS BY STICKY STAPYLTON
A trainer and teacher throughout his life, Sticky is a Royal Yachting Association qualified Yachtmaster Instructor, a Yachtmaster Ocean
Try out your storm sails when it’s calm ON the two yachts I have owned I either had a separate forestay on which to rig the sail or had the more common storm jib set up with a wire luff. In both instances the sail can be set up, well tensioned and with the shape reasonably flat. On the boat I was sailing though, we had a different set-up and one which I had not put to the test for some time. We had a tube of material which was set round the furled headsail and then hanked on to the storm jib (see photo). In the past I have used storm jibs with parrel beads when rigging the sail round the furled headsail, making the hoisting and lowering much simpler. It was surprising how well the tube slid up the furled headsail. It needed a bit of help from a crew member on the foredeck and it did catch from time to time but we raised it much more quickly than I expected. With any set-up where there is material which has to be secured round a furled headsail the sheets have to be removed and the clew secured. The difficulty is reaching the clew of
some headsails to untie the sheets. On one boat the clew was so high that the only way we could secure it was to use a six-foot-three crew member and he was standing on the pulpit! Not a very safe place to be in a rising f7. The lesson is to get your sails set before the bad weather comes in. This is why listening to the forecast, watching for signs of deteriorating weather or noting each new forecast on Navtext are all so important.
Sometimes you will find that close hauled you need to run the sheets inside the cap or lower shrouds, and for a reach outside. The most important aspect of all this is to get out your storm jib, and trysail, if you have one, and set them up in mild conditions, working out the best method to use in a rising wind and sea. Check how you would tack, bear away and harden up should there be a need. www.sail-help.co.uk
GUINEA OR POUND – ANY CLUES? I AM chartering a 700-ton vessel which will carry 300 passengers to watch nine J class yachts racing round the Isle of Wight on 21 July next year in a re-enactment of the 100 Guinea cup raced in 1851. I will be providing a light breakfast, a slap up lunch and afternoon tea. I have been challenged over my nomenclature of the original race. The Americans did not, could not understand what a guinea was, so apparently the race was titled the £100 Cup. I cannot find any reference to this, can anyone help? instructor@sail-help.co.uk www.sail-help.co.uk/index.cfm?page=j-class-2012-regatta

RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
e-Learning proves a great success THE RYA’s first foray into online learning is proving such a success that the organisation is already developing its next eLearning training course. Six months on from the launch of its inaugural fully-interactive eLearning theory course – Essential Navigation and Seamanship – at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show in January, more than 300 people have already enrolled on or undertaken the course, figures which are so far exceeding the RYA’s first year predictions on course uptake. Such has been the appetite for a course that individuals can tackle whenever and wherever they want, the RYA is now working on its latest online training instalment aimed at applicants for commercial endorsements, helping them to understand the legal issues, and best practice, that differentiates them from leisure skippers. As Jane Hall, RYA eLearning and Training Resources Manager said: “Online training has not been developed to replace the RYA’s traditional classroom and water-based training methods, rather provide an alternative route for people to get their first taste of what they will need to know, and what skills
they will need to develop, should they wish to get more involved in the sport. Jane added: “Because they decide exactly where and when they study it makes enrolling on an introductory course much more appealing to those who may have considered doing a course too problematic. ” Essential Navigation and Seamanship is an entry-level course, designed for anyone who ‘plays’ on the water, from sailors and motor boaters to sea
anglers and divers. It takes around six hours to complete and is the perfect precursor to practical RYA courses such as Competent Crew, Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman. On top of the 300 plus individuals already signed up for the course, some 60 recognised RYA Training Centres across the UK and from as far afield as Australia, Greece, Italy, Canada, the USA and Spain are also offering Essential Navigation and Seamanship.
Student surveys have found a third of those who have enrolled have had no previous boating experience, with participants split evenly on whether their interest lays in sailing or powerboating. Around three-quarters have stated they would go on to undertake another RYA course. Essential Navigation and Seamanship’s cutting edge content, which has been developed with hugely-experienced Yachtmasters and online educational experts, is delivered through a rich, innovative media mix of videos, audio and animations. Jane added: “Once people have enrolled on the course the onus is on them to work through it at their own pace. They aren’t going to do that if the content is dry, boring and monotonous, so we have worked, and continue to work, with the experts to ensure the latest online learning techniques are used to keep the courses informative yet fun.” The commercial endorsements applicants’ online course is scheduled for launch next spring.
A brilliAnt experience RICHARD Broers from Berkshire undertook his Essential Navigation and Seamanship course through the Hamble School of Yachting and has subsequently gone on to pass, his RYA Competent Crew course. He said: “The flexibility and convenience they present in terms of when and where individuals choose to study opens up the courses, and the opportunity to learn, to an extended audience. “With my previous sailing experience and online knowledge, the Competent Crew course was no longer a daunting prospect.

A wild life on the West Coast – read the Green Blue on page 14
IN 1826 in North Wales the Menai Suspension Bridge was opened. Meanwhile over in Africa some chap called Alexander Gordon Laing became the first European to reach Timbuktu. All very interesting, but not a patch on what was going on in the world of yachting, where something far more momentous was occurring. This was the first year in which the Royal Yacht Club hosted the Gold Cup and in doing so, laid down the foundations for the fun and frolics we now know as Cowes Week. Fast forward 185 years and Cowes Week is firmly established as a cornerstone of the British summer sporting diary. Not only is it a favourite with yachtmen – the regatta attracts 1,000 boats and 8,500 sailors for 40 races a day – but 100,000 people visit the Isle of Wight for the event which also attracts celebrities including this year newly wed equestrian Zara Phillips, Hollywood star Ewan McGregor and TV and radio presenter Natalie Pinkham. There is plenty to keep them all happy.
Out On the water
THIS is where the serious action takes place, with a wildly varied schedule of racing which takes in everything from titanic clashes between the latest high speed multihulls, through to fleet racing of a more leisurely type aboard gentlemen’s day boats, such as the XOD class. Cowes Week is one of those rare events where weekend sailors can suddenly find themselves pitting their wits against Olympic champions out on the course. Here are a few selected highlights.

artemis Challenge Some of the biggest names in ocean racing will battle it out in a high adrenaline 50 mile crewed race round the island onboard the latest generation IMOCA 60 monohulls, competing for a £10,000 charity prize fund and accompanied by mystery celebrity guests. Taking place on August 10, you can find out more details by going to www.artemischallenge.com
Big BOat series
A number of the largest and most glamorous boats in the world are joining for three days of racing during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week prior to taking part in the Rolex Fastnet Race. From Tuesday 9 until Thursday 11 August a small but stunning line-up will include Niklas Zennstrom’s Rán, the Swiss Swan 100 Alalunga, and Andres Soriano’s Alegre.

Trophies are awarded daily to the first boat in each class by one of the member clubs of Cowes Combined Clubs. These are perpetual trophies – held by the winner for a year before being handed back. In addition, overall keeper trophies are awarded to the top three boats in each class for their performance over

the whole regatta. These trophies are presented at the overall prize giving on the final Saturday of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.
the extreme series
This is where the real fireworks happen. People often say that one of the big highlights of Cowes Week is the fireworks but in recent times some argue that the real fireworks take place during the extreme sailing Series. This high octane event takes place close to the shore and offers spectators a chance to view some really spectacular racing.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Solent will host the UK stop on the global nine-event Extreme Sailing Series. Twelve Extreme 40 catamarans, with world-renowned sailors from 15 nationalities, will be lining-up on 6 August for seven days of ‘stadium sailing’ action the circuit has become renowned for. Among the top Brits competing is Leigh Macmillan, 2010 series champion Paul Campbell-James and 49er hotshot John Pink. Racing will take place close to shore from 3pm on Saturday 6 - Tuesday 9 August and late afternoon Wednesday 10 - Friday 12 August.

A BIG WEEK FOR THE HOME OF YACHTING

and a range of live entertainments on the Gill stage. Throughout the week, there will be a vast array of attractions but here are a few selected highlights to keep an eye out for.
red arroWs Photo: Rick Tomlinson
COWES Week is first and foremost a sailing event, but it’s also a celebration with a real festival atmosphere and there are plenty of other attractions to distract you from the main event. If you just fancy a mosey around to soak up the atmosphere, then head to Cowes Parade in the heart of the town. Here you’ll find a festival atmosphere, featuring street entertainment, live music, the Sail for Gold bar and The Deck Restaurant. The focal point for Cowes Week will be Cowes Yacht Haven. Entry is free except on fireworks night, which this year features the Mahiki Cowes Cocktail Bar
The Red Arrows need no introduction and the good news is that they will be performing their jaw dropping routine at 1930 on Saturday, August 6: a spectacular way to kick off a week of fun.
Family day
If you’ve got kids, then Sunday, August 7 is all about you. Family Day is all about providing a range of activities that help parents and children get the most out of their time at the regatta. Attractions include a children’s flagmaking competition, viewings aboard the iconic Gipsy Moth IV, remotecontrolled model-boat racing, a village fete throughout the day at Northwood Park and a ‘Wonders of the Universe’
stargazing evening. In addition to this, hour-long sailing lessons with the UKSA are available to families of four for a special discounted price of just £15 and there will also be family discounts on RIB rides and in the spectator boat.
Black knighTs
Keep an eye out for the rather menacingly titled Black Knights, who plan to drop into the show on Thursday, August 9. These chaps are from the Royal Artillery Parachute Display Team and will be demonstrating their skills at 7.30pm, so keep a weather eye on the heavens.
FireWorks
Rightly seen as one of the highlights of the whole event, the fireworks display on August 12 has become a renowned feature and is the perfect way to round of a spectacular week of celebrations. Around 75,000 people gather on the waterfront to watch the display, with the first fuse sparking up at 9.30pm.
The Blackadder connecTion ODDlY enough, Cowes week owes an awful lot to a George IV. For those of you with long memories, you will recall this particular chap being satirized rather brutally in Blackadder III when Hugh laurie played the role of Prince Regent, a man who takes a week to work out how to put on a pair of trousers, eventually shoving them over his head. Hosiery issues aside, following the 1826 Gold Cup, an event organized by the Royal Yacht Club in Cowes and consisting of a race between seven yachts, George IV indicated his approval of the event. He attended the 1827 regatta, presenting the King’s Cup, awarded at every subsequent event until 1939. the event became known as Cowes Regatta and continued to flourish throughout the 19th century. the early 1900s saw the Cowes
Regatta continue in strength with the graceful 23, 19 and 15-metre boats racing in all their glory. these were followed by the spectacular J-class boats later on in the 1930’s. Following World War II, the King’s Cup was replaced by the Britannia Cup, presented to the Royal Yachting Association by King George VI in 1950. By 1953 nine days of racing were provided and the focus had shifted away from the huge, and hugely expensive, gentlemen’s yachts. later developments have seen the Admiral’s Cup come and go but, post war, the event largely started to take the shape of the regatta we all know and love today, featuring an eclectic selection of yacht racing and shore based events. As George IV would doubtless say were he to attend today: “I’m as happy as a Frenchman who has invented a pair of selfremoving trousers.”

seeing the Action
A spectAtor’s guide to cowes week Après-racing jollies in the clubhouse
SO you’ve made it to Cowes and are supping that ice cold beer or possibly even a Pimm’s if you’re feeling really decadent. The next question is how can you actually get a butcher’s of the action?
Ashore
One of the best locations to watch the starts ashore is the area near Cowes Castle – the Royal Yacht Squadron. Here you can get right on the line and see who got the best start and which boats were over the line. In the afternoon, head along the Green towards Egypt Point to watch the Cowes Week fleet as they finish.
AfloAt
Another option is to get out either on a RIB or aboard a spectator boat. The spectator boat goes out on hourlong trips at 10.30am, 12pm and 1.30pm, departing from Trinity Landing on Cowes Parade. Prices are £10 per adult and £8 for children aged 16 and under. www.aamcowesweek.co.uk RIBs are also available for charter from Ondeck. This service will operate from Saturday 31 July through to Sat 7 August and prices are £35 per person or £105 for a family of four – two adults and two children – for an hour on the water. To book, call 01983 284300 or email: enquiry@ondeck.co.uk
X one design clAss:
100 NOT OUT 2011 will be an extra special year for the X One Design – XOD – Class, which first started racing way back in 1911 and intends to celebrate 100 up in style at Cowes Week. In a rather pleasing piece of symmetry, XOD entries for Cowes Week have topped 100, so the class will be out in force. All eyes will be on the class at this world-famous regatta. the three-man wooden keelboat class is already known as the hardest to win at Cowes because of the large numbers that always enter, and the Captain’s Cup, the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week Class trophy, is much sought after - and won - by world class sailors and family crews alike. In addition to its usual daily racing fixture, the XOD class is staging a
XOD X1 Stepaside in 1927 Photo: Beken
special Centenary three-day ‘regatta within the regatta’ in the middle of the week, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, from tuesday 9 to thursday 11 August. to celebrate this landmark anniversary the race on thursday will be started by HRH the Princess Royal. the class is also hosting a number of parties during the week.
getting there FOR those who seriously haven’t been paying attention, the Isle of Wight is an island, so if you want to get there, you’ll either need your own boat, or catch a ferry. there are regular ferries to and from the Island and if you are on foot there is no need to book. However, if you plan to bring a car to the Island (remember that parking at Cowes is very limited), bookings are essential. You can either get the car ferry to east Cowes or the Red Jet fast passenger catamaran to Cowes. Both ferries leave from central Southampton and the trip takes 20 minutes on the Red Jet and
around an hour on the car ferry. Full details can be found at: www.redfunnel.co.uk or call 0845 155 2442. In addition to this, a passenger service will run from lymington in the New Forest to Cowes throughout Cowes Week. Lymington depart: 0700, 0915, 1915 Cowes depart: 0800, 1800, 2030 this service will run between lymington town Harbourmasters’ Jetty, next to the Harbour Office, and trinity landing on Cowes Parade. the journey time will be approximately one hour. For more details, telephone: 023 80 223278.

WHEN you’re not out having fun on the water a good way to pick up some great tips and learn all about the water is with a good book. We asked Max, Angus and Molly to review three of the books in the RYA Go! series and tell us what they thought. Molly Blick, aged 8X, reviewed the RYA Go Green! book which looks at all things to do with the environment as you enjoy an adventure through the UK’s waterways and shorelines. The book also looks at some of the problems wildlife experience because of polluted waterways and beaches. Molly said: “I really like this book. It’s very good. I especially like the funny comments and jokes that appear in speech bubbles on each page and the cartoony animals and people. “It is a great book for kids who would like to learn all about the seas and oceans, sea animals, fish, birds, nature and science. It is full of amazing facts about all sorts of things and how we harm the seas and oceans and how we can make them better again.” RYA Go Cruising! was the book for Angus Kilpatrick, aged 8. Angus told us: “This book was a really fun way to learn about big boat sailing. I loved the pictures and the funny captions. I learnt some new sailing words and think I will be a more useful crew on our family yacht now. I can’t wait to show off my new skills to my friends . . . “Even Mummy and Daddy may have learnt something as I caught them reading it!” RYA Go Cruising! covers all the essentials required to help you become a valuable member of the crew on either a sail or motor cruiser. Our final book for review was RYA Go Sailing! which brings the theory of sailing to life and it was eight-year-old Max Edgington and his friend Dom who reviewed the book for us. Max said: “Dom and I had great fun looking at all the great pictures in the
‘Go Sailing!’’ book. We especially liked the knot page and practised on any piece of rope we could find which started to annoy my dad a lot!” Max’s mum Celia also commented: “Max and Dom were constantly laughing out loud at the pictures in the book and I also had a great time reading it with him.” There are six books in total in RYA Go! series written by Claudia Myatt – Go Green! Go Sailing! Go Cruising! Go Inland! There are also two exciting activity books Go Sailing! Activity book, Go Cruising! Activity book packed full of games, quizzes and different exercises that will test your knowledge and teach you new things. There is also the Logbook where you can record details of all your trips so you can tell where you are and where you’ve been! THE PACIFIC CROSSING GUIDE RCC Pilotage Foundation with Ocean Cruising Club
THE second edition of The Pacific Crossing Guide, has been revised and updated by writer and journalist Ros Hogbin. It is a complete reference for anyone contemplating sailing the Pacific in their own Boat. The first edition of The Pacific Crossing Guide, rapidly established itself as the definitive reference on the subject. No
other book has anywhere near the scope and detail on the Pacific as this guide. It covers East to West and West to East crossings including the South Pacific crossing via Fiji, and North up to Alaska. The guide is a godsend to potential and departing Pacific cruisers as it includes essential information from the ideal timing, methods of communication and provisioning to seasonal weather, departure and arrival ports and likely costs and dangers. The comprehensiveness of this revised edition will both inspire dreamers and instil confidence in those about to depart. This is the definitive reference on the subject, relied upon by many thousands of cruisers. Michael Pocock and his wife spent three and a half years cruising in the Pacific as part of an unhurried circumnavigation. They sailed over 20,000 miles within the Pacific visiting countless islands. Ros Hogbin is a writer and journalist who has recently returned from a threeyear circumnavigation with her husband on their Nicolson 43. She has written on cruising and racing for Sailing Today and Yachting World. Publishing date: 31 August 2011 Price: £45.00 · ISBN: 978 0 713 66182 8

HOW TO COPE WITH STORMS Dietrich von Haeften
BEING caught out in a storm is every sailor’s worst nightmare. Doubts and fears are hard to banish when a boat is being battered by the elements. Will the helmsman cope with the huge waves piling up behind? Can the rigging take the strain? Should you weather the storm or run for shelter? A storm need not end in disaster, and being prepared for bad weather is the best way to ensure that. Part of the Adlard Coles Nautical Sailmate
series, How to Cope with Storms is packed with practical advice and clear diagrams to help sailors cope, explaining how storms develop, how to avoid them, and survival tactics if they can’t be avoided. It also includes information on design features for heavy weather, handling crew, what to do in emergencies, and much more. Publishing date: August 2011 Price: £14.99 · ISBN: 9781408132913

IN THE DRINK
One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink
BY PAUL ANTROBUS
Summer jugs
with one litre or more of dry cider. Put lots of ice in the glasses for serving, not in the jug. Ridiculously simple. Super summer drink but remember it is an alcohol fortifying mix not a reducer. Hence lots of ice in the glass.
CARIBBEAN RUM PUNCH FOR A HOT, LAZY DAY
One of the best: W jug Pusser’s rum, four lumps of sugar (brown if you can), big squeeze of lemon juice, four dashes Angostura bitters, moderate slug of orange Curaçao and ice cubes, topped up with equal parts of orange and pineapple juice.
HOLIDAY MEMORIES – SPANISH SANGRIA
SIX OF THE BEST
For the classic mix: One bottle Spanish red wine, single spirit measure of lime juice, two measures Grand Marnier, sliced lemon and oranges. That’s all. Nice with a cold lunch.
ELDERFLOWER JUG
JUGS of different mixes are good fun for pouring generously at parties and save a lot of host barman time. Keep them simple to reduce the replenishment process to a minimum, whether you make up your own or base them on these easy recipes. For these six you need Pimm’s, golden rum, vodka, Galliano, Grand Marnier, orange Curaçao, Angostura bitters, Spanish red wine, elderflower cordial, orange and pineapple fruit juices, pure lemon juice, sugar cubes, cucumber, oranges and lemons, fresh mint leaves, grated ginger, lemonade, tonic, sparkling water, lots of ice cubes and several 1.5 litre jugs. Sounds a lot but they are mostly basics which you will probably already have in stock.
IT’S SUMMERTIME, SO LET’S BEGIN WITH PIMM’S
Everyone can do the basic mix – it’s on the bottle! One part Pimm’s to four parts lemonade (a good one such as Schweppes or R Whites). To make it more
tangy for summer refreshment add several drops of Angostura bitters and a generous squeeze of lemon juice and/ or split the lemonade 50/50 with tonic. Lots of ice in the glass, pour carefully to minimise the marinaded fruit going into the glass, add a fresh mint leaf and a slice of orange and cucumber.
A LIGHT SUMMER VERSION OF HARVEY WALLBANGER Double measure Wight vodka, single measure Galliano, dash of Angostura bitters, ice and one whole litre of orange juice. Tastes harmless but is a great party starter. Label the jug so no one mistakes it for plain orange juice!
BRITTANY TRIBUTE – CALVADOS AND CIDER
This is very easy and very ‘over there’: One double measure Calvados and four sugar cubes topped up

Probably the best non-alcoholic drink for sophisticated flavour and very refreshing. Use concentrated cordial such as Bottle Green Cordial, £2.96 in Waitrose for 500ml bottle which makes at least 6.5 litres and lets you customise your mix. Beware the ‘sparkling’ ready-to-drink version. It’s sometimes labelled ‘pressé’ and comes in a very similar-looking bottle at a similar price but you just get the volume that’s in the bottle for your money. Just like making any diluted squash drink, pour just 7.5 ml of cordial - that’s a triple spirit measure - into the jug, add slices of lemon and lime (no orange, though). Then, for version one, top up with sparkling water or, for version two, with Canada Dry ginger ale. No ice in the jug, just in the glass, and a sprinkling of ground ginger on the top. You can choose to make it stronger flavoured. My tasting panel of designated driver abstainers as distinct from tee-totallers preferred it on the weaker side to sustain for a longish party.
