The ecstatic skipper, Richard Hewson, 31, from Hobart, Tasmania, said, “It’s fantastic to be home – I love Western Australia, it’s like a second home and it’s fantastic to be back here.” In addition to the ten points for winning this race Gold Coast Australia also secured three bonus points for being the first team to reach the Scoring Gate. Visit Finland denied them a clean sweep by beating them in the Ocean Sprint. New base for ellen’s trust

THE Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has received a boost from Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas, which will contribute towards new permanent operational premises for the charity at East Cowes Marina. It means the charity, which aims to rebuild the confidence of young people who have suffered from cancer or leukaemia by taking them sailing, will allow them to take even more young people on their inspirational yacht trips in 2012.

Dean & Reddyhoff, which has four marinas on the South coast, including Portland, Haslar, Weymouth and East Cowes, have supported the trust over the last three years, providing free berthing for the trust’s yacht, Moonspray. The marina will now act as a permanent operational base for the Trust, who plans to run all of their summer yacht trips from the new centre in 2012. The trust has celebrated its busiest year to date, taking 302 young people on their

life changing sailing trips in 2011. The trust, established by Dame Ellen MacArthur in 2003 aims to inspire children’s recovery from cancer and serious illness, and offers opportunities for young people aged eight to 24 to take part in a range of sailing-based activities, including the trust’s traditional four-day Solent sailing trips and the Competent Crew courses, which will now operate from the new East Cowes base. www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org

Olly completes life saving sail CANCER survivor Olly Rofix sailed into London’s St Katherine’s Dock at the end of last month after his seven month voyage round the UK. As he sailed he raised awareness for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan that saved his life and recruited donors for its stem cell register. Olly, from Woodbridge in Suffolk, received a blood stem cell, or bone marrow, transplant through Anthony Nolan in 2008. He embarked on his solo voyage in March.

He was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia so rare that it didn’t even have a name in 2005. “I was only the third person in the world to have had this form Olly Rofix of leukaemia which I thought was pretty cool until I found out the other two were dead,” he explained. Lynsey Dickson, donor recruitment manager for Anthony Nolan, said: “Olly’s challenge has been an absolutely

fantastic achievement. We couldn’t do our work without volunteers like Olly and we’re so grateful for his support.” There are nearly 1,600 people in the UK in need of a bone marrow transplant. Men aged 18-30 are the most likely to be chosen as a match but they make up just 12 per cent of the register. Young men are more likely to be asked to donate because men are generally bigger so will provide a higher yield of stem cells. www.olivers-travels.co.uk

tHe world’s only historically accurate, full size replica of one of Christopher Columbus’ three ships that, in 1492, crossed the Atlantic in voyages of discovery to open up the “New World” to european explorers has been repowered with a Perkins engine. the replica Niña, Columbus’ favourite vessel, has a Perkins M215C engine, following the earlier successful powering of another replica Columbus vessel, the Pinta, with a pair of Perkins M135 engines. Both ships are owned and operated by British Virgin Islandsbased Columbus Foundation and the Niña is used as floating museum – the only touring maritime museum of its kind in the world – visiting ports across the western hemisphere. the ship most associated with Columbus and his three crossings of the Atlantic is the Santa Maria. She ran aground in Hispaniola and sank on the first voyage. After her first voyage the Pinta disappeared without trace. the Niña went on to log at least 25,000 miles under Columbus’ command and was last heard of in 1501.

NOVEMBER 2011

SEATALK

By Bob Satchwell

LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE PUT aside the gloom of the clocks going back and concern that your favourite taverna in the Greek islands might not be there next season. Let’s look on the bright side. It is, after all, what mariners have been doing from the year dot. There is the thrill of setting sail to who knows where – or at least that must have been one of the strongest emotions for the likes of Columbus, Magellan, Drake or Captain Cook. Leave the bad vibes behind and look forward to new lands, new friends, new riches. Think about our obsession with the weather. Whichever way you look at it, the wind will get up later or the rain and the gales will blow away by lunchtime. By the time we have had another game of bowls we can have a fine day out on the water. The marina or the bay we are heading for will not be overfull. A favourite restaurant will have plenty of space or that idylic anchorage will be empty and flat calm so that we don’t have to nail down the wine bottle and glasses. It must be a necessary part of any boating type’s psyche. When you have forked out a fortune for your favourite toy you have to make the most of it. That’s why the smell of the sea puts a grin on our faces. And in reality there is plenty to smile about. What an autumn of balmy days. Temperatures, in southern and eastern parts at least, in the high teens and unseasonal sunny days when we should be wrapping up against the frost for an evening in front of a warming bonfire night blaze. But that’s only the half of it. Just read some of the uplifting news

this month. A new home for Ellen MacArthur’s charity that gives young cancer patients a boost. Salute Olly Rofix’ s way of celebrating his battle against live-threatening illness. He sailed around the UK to encourage stem cell donations. There are the former mariners of the Royal Alfred Seafarers’Society who went into schools to tell young people not to rule out an exciting career at sea. Then there is the Scottish youth development group who provided challenges for young people to help them face up to the difficulties of their disadvantaged backgrounds. And of course there is our own Geoff Holt who has used his sailing exploits to help launch a new power craft that will give other wheelchair users hours and days of pleasure on the water.

Wetwheels

These are just a few of the uplifting and inspiring stories of people who enjoy boating sharing their passion and their fun to encourage others, young and old, to make the use of Britain’s second greatest natural asset, the water that surrounds us. The country’s greatest asset is of course its people who, without much thought, do so much for their neighbours. They (that means you) follow their instincts and simply share their pleasure or undertake extraordinary challenges to help those less fortunate.

Former mariners say don’t miss out on a career at sea A GROUP of former seafarers encouraged youngsters to consider important work in the Royal and Merchant navies. Residents at the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society, a Surrey based home which provides accommodation and care to former seafarers and their dependants, said there was not enough awareness of the important roles of the navies among younger generations. Great Britain’s maritime sector is the largest in Europe, yet when a group of 15 to 24 year olds were asked if they‘would consider a career in the maritime sector, only 12 per cent responded ‘yes’, according to Sea Vision UK. The Merchant Navy has kept citizens in the UK fed, clothed and equipped for more than 200 years, as well as being a lynchpin of the economy.

Young people are missing out on the travel, broadening their outlook and seeing how people in other parts of the world live Today 95 per cent of Britain’s imports and 75 per cent of exports travel by sea. In addition to maritime defence of the nation and the nation’s interests worldwide, the Royal Navy also contributes to the stability, economic growth and development of the UK. But career interest in both industries is dwindling with employment figures in the Merchant Navy dropping from 42,000 in 1975 to 23,000 in 2010. Geoffrey Talbot, 87, is one of the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society’s longeststanding residents, having arrived in 1992. Originally from Clayhanger, a Staffordshire mining village, his life took him far from the landlocked Midlands, with a career spent largely at sea. He served first as a Royal Navy mechanic in Sri Lanka, partly in the jungle, during World War II. He later

joined the Merchant Navy as a ship’s radio officer, where he stayed for 41 years. Another resident, Captain Roy Davis, worked in the Merchant Navy for 45 years, travelling the world from Russia to South America, transporting all manner of goods from sheep to missiles. He said: “When I went to sea the British Merchant Navy was the biggest in the world and in every single village there was at least a couple of people that went to sea.

“The opportunities are not broadcast as they used to be and young people are missing out on the travel, broadening their outlook and seeing how people in other parts of the world live.” Commander Brian Boxall-Hunt, Chief Executive of the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society, said: “It seems a shame for youngsters to miss out through lack of knowledge.” www.careersatsea.org/ or www.royalnavy.mod.uk.

Huge cash boost from tall Ships

Young people step up to the challenge TEN young people were welcomed home as they completed the final leg of Project Northern Lights. The challenging eight-week adventure and personal training programme was designed to help disadvantaged young people to shine. The Muirhouse Youth Development Group project is the latest example of businesses stepping up to support grassroots organisations in one of Scotland’s most deprived communities in North Edinburgh. The journey involved three gruelling stages over the course of eight weeks, instruction in personal training, coaching

and teamwork and an intensive course in outdoor survival skills and fitness. It culminated in a week-long sailtraining voyage around the west coast with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland. Andy Wishart, Outdoor Education Instructor and volunteer First Mate for Ocean Youth Trust Scotland, said: “This experience has been no holiday and has pushed these young people to their limits – both physically and emotionally.” The pilot project has received crossparty political backing from the SNP, Conservative and Scottish Green Parties. It could benefit more than 45 young people in 2012.

Get in touch with stories from your area: editor@allatsea.co.uk THE Tall Ships Races eventheld in Greenock in July generated £24million across Scotland. An independent economic report revealed that £10.4million was generated in the Inverclyde region by visitors and crew, a further £8.6million of spending rippled to the West of Scotland and a total of £5.2m was spent elsewhere in the country as a result of the event. More than 750,000 visitors flocked to Greenock to take in the sights of more than 50 Tall Ships with 1,722 crew berthed along James Watt Dock and Inchgreen Quay as part of a four day extravaganza. The report, by ekos ltd, was developed for Sail Inverclyde, the organising charity behind the land based activity. It found that average daily spend of day-trip visitors was between £17 and £24, but with more than 20 per cent of visitors staying overnight in the region, their daily spend increased to between £37 and £60. It meant more than £5 of investment was returned for every £1 of public sector spending within Inverclyde, a further £4 return across the West of Scotland and almost £3 at a Scottish level*. The report shows that 97 per cent of visitors gave the event the highest possible rating with 99 per cent rating their visit to Scotland with the highest marks and 90 per cent vowed to return if the event is held there again.

Have your say on plans for conservation NAtURAl england is undertaking a public consultation on plans for the Studland to Portland possible Special Area of Conservation the purpose is to seek views on the scientific case for special area status and to assess economic, environmental and social impacts. the proposed marine protected area is more than 330sq kms – just

over half the size of the New Forest National Park – and contains a wide range of diverse, rare reef features. the Studland Bay to Ringstead Bay reefs are a mixture of exposed shales and clays, limestone, boulders and chalk bedrock. the reefs provide important platforms for colonisation of species such as the sunset cup coral, Weymouth carpet coral, squat

lobsters and the reef-building Ross worms. the Portland reefs are characterised by flat bedrock, ledges, cobbles and rugged limestone boulders with deep gullies and overhangs. Communities of barnacles and sponges have made their home in ‘mini caves’ here, with mussel beds found in high densities on the bedrock.

the consultation ends on 24 November. After that during 2012, Natural england will report to the Department for environment, Food and Rural Affairs and submit the final site recommendation and impact assessment. www.naturalengland.org.uk/ ourwork/marine/sacconsultation/ default.aspx

The newly-formed DHL First Nation Home will be the ultimate sporting showdown between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as the celebrity teams run, row, cycle and sail their way around the UK and Ireland. The four teams, which will be made up of celebrities and sports stars representing their “home” country will race over 1,000 miles around the UK and Ireland over a seven day period from March 10 to 17. On Sunday March 25, 1,000 members of the public who each secured one of the limited places to represent their country will run the final six miles to the finish, alongside the many famous faces in their individual teams. The entry fee is £60 and it requires a commitment to raise a minimum sponsorship of £450 each between now and the final run on March 25. Each national team will consist of ten members including international rugby players and an Olympic hero from sailing, running and cycling who will join their team as a ‘ringer’. Dame Ellen MacArthur will be at the helm of Team England’s 72-foot challenger yacht from Northern Ireland to Scotland, while Team Scotland will benefit

from the skill and expertise of World Champion cycling time trialist Graeme “The Flying Scotsman” Obree who will line up against his great friend and rival Chris Boardman, Team England’s own World Champion and Olympic Gold medal-winning cyclist. The national teams will start the race simultaneously from their home cities of Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh and London and will head off clockwise around the UK and Ireland via the other four capital cities. Participants will include top TV presenters and celebrities Gethin Jones, celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin, presenters Andrea MacLean and Craig Doyle, actress and model Gemma Atkinson, Olympians Sonia O’Sullivan, Iwan Thomas and Chris Boardman and rugby stars Thom Evans, Josh Lewsey and Gareth Thomas. Celebrating a golden age of liners A NeW book by award-winning writer William H Miller is a celebration of the grand age of maritime creativity. It includes the ill-fated titanic, as well as Aquitania, lusitania and Mauretania. the decade 1910–20 was dramatic. It was an age of evolution, when size and speed were almost the ultimate considerations – it was the Industrial Age reaching for new heights, new dimensions, breaking records. In response ocean liners were becoming

bigger, longer, taller and faster. It was the age of the ‘floating palace’. the Olympic, titanic and Britannic, lusitania, Mauretania and Aquitania, the France; and the Vaterland, Imperator and Bismarck are among the greatest and most loved liners, floating ambassadors of national pride. It all changed as the First World War erupted. Commercial trading was all but suspended and ships took on new roles. luxurious liners were transformed into

sombre hospital ships, armed merchant cruisers, troop transports – and victims of torpedoes and mines. Bill Miller, or ‘Mr Ocean liner’, has written 70 books on passenger ships and is an acknowledged world expert. He has sailed on more than 350 voyages on 300 ships. the book, Great Passenger Ships 1910 – 1920, published by the History Press features mainly previously unpublished images and costs £19.99 in paperback.

Marlow ropes in 470 sailors SKANDIA Team GBR Transitional Squad sailors Anna Burnett and Flora Stewart have received an extra boost to their 470 campaign by being awarded with the prestigious Marlow Ropes Award. The award was introduced in 2002 with the aim of rewarding Britain’s most promising young sailors for their determination, focus and talent. The young sailors from Southampton have had an impressive run of results on the summer circuit including a silver medal at the Delta Lloyd 470 Junior World Championships, Medemblik, Netherlands. Being part of Skandia Team GBR provides them both with an array of world class training resources used by Britain’s Olympic gold medal winning

sailors – a real stepping stone to succeeding at the highest level. Anna said: “Our partnership in the 470 class is going really well – we have been together for almost four years now and we seem to be getting stronger and stronger at each event which is vital for our development ” The duo are now entering an intense period of training over the winter months. The Marlow award entitles the 470 girls to a year’s supply of free Marlow rope, a financial boost which previous winners, double World 470 champions Nic Asher and Elliot Willis and 2008 Olympic Yngling gold medallist Pippa Wilson, have also benefitted from. Flora Stewart said: “The award allows us to focus on our sailing and not worry about the equipment or the boat. I’m sure it will benefit our overall performance and results at future regattas.” As well as supporting up-and-coming sailors, Marlow Ropes are also the official supplier and exclusive team ropes partner to Skandia Team GBR. www.skandiateamgbr.com

Boy saved from four metre swell

CULLERCOATS lifeboat launched to rescue a 12-year-old boy who had been swept into the sea. The conditions on October 26 off Brown’s Bay, Cullercoats, were so rough that the boy was exhausted in a few minutes. He was battling a four metre swell. Fortunately, his friends had promptly called the Coastguard, who alerted the volunteers of Cullercoats inshore lifeboat. The Cullercoats crew of Robert Oliver, Grahame Wood and Stephen Potts launched just before 4pm. They powered their rigid inflatable Hylton Burdon to the scene and plucked the exhausted, hypothermic youngster from the sea. He was falling into the last stages of consciousness in the

extremely cold water. Back at the lifeboat station in Cullercoats Bay, the boy was given oxygen and warmed up while waiting for the Air Sea Rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer. He was flown to Wansbeck Hospital in Ashington for further treatment. Later reports indicated that he was recovering from his ordeal. Lifeboat Operations Manager Frank Taylor praised the efforts of the volunteer crew: “‘I am sure that this young man would not be alive now without the skill and courage of our crew members. Their prompt response made the difference between life and death.”

NEWS IN BRIEF CRUISER MAYDAY

EASTBOURNE’S all-weather lifeboat launched on 22 October after a ten metre steel motor cruiser suffered engine failure while rounding the notorious ledge at Beachy Head. The vessel was being swept quickly westwards in the ebbing tide and strong wind, and her crew were suffering from severe seasickness in the rough sea. Mechanic Dan Guy climbed aboard to deploy a drogue and rig a towline. By this time, the vessel had drifted to within three miles of Beachy Head. Coxswain Mark Sawyer decided to tow the cruiser to Newhaven.

KAYAKER SAVED

“I THOUGHT no-one was going to come for me,” were the words of a kayaker clinging to to his capsized craft when Lough Swilly lifeboat found him on 22 October. The crew were alerted after the kayaker was reported overdue, and searched with three yachts and a dive boat. After 30 minutes, the inshore lifeboat crew pulled him aboard and transferred him to the all-weather lifeboat to be checked over by paramedics.

INTELLIGENT INSULATION

THE i5 Headwind Jacket is a dynamic mid-layer garment that uses innovative technology to keep the user in the comfort zone. Responding to changing weather conditions, the jacket ‘self-adjusts’ using an Intelligent Thermoregulation System - a dynamic, breathable material that adjusts according to ambient temperatures to keep your body regulated and comfortable. The thermal ‘gates’ or microspaces between the fibres in the i5 Headwind Jacket close up when colder to achieve maximum thermal efficiency, and open when warmer to allow excess heat to escape. Designed as a high-performance mid-layer, the i5 is also suitable as an outer layer on warmer days. It comes with wind and water-resistant fabric, elasticated cuffs, a draw cord hem and zipped hand pockets. And it looks pretty stylish too. Price: £105 • 01159 460844 www.gillmarine.com

MAST BASE ORGANISER BARTON Marine has launched an innovative Mast Base Organiser that offers a solution for the managing of mast control lines that lead back to the cockpit. The safety benefits of hoisting, lowering and reefing the mainsail from the cockpit are well reported but are not an easy retro-fit option on older cruising yachts with traditional rigs. Owners now have this option without the need for expensive fabrication or numerous fittings drilled into the deck. The Barton Mast Base Organiser accommodates up to four double tang blocks (not supplied) which are mounted on individual stainless steel swivel posts, all secured with just three deck fixing points. The Mast Base Organiser is designed to work in conjunction with Barton’s range of deck organisers, rope clutches and winches, and is fitted close to the mast base so the main halyard, reefing lines and topping lift can be fed through. www.bartonmarine.com

GREEN FOCUS

A joint BMF and RYA initiative

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms

JANE SWAN, THE GREEN BLUE

A treasure trove from old rubbish at all, it was a commodity. Bones were sold and boiled to make glue, scrap food sold for animal feed, embers kept overnight to light the range the following morning, and any dust eventually carted to dust heaps and turned into bricks, and so on and so on. In those days it was commonplace and borne out of survival. These days it’s fashionable to call it the waste hierarchy – reduce, reuse, recycle, recovery and disposal – and it’s not that far removed from everyday practice by canny, skilful boaters already adept, and probably even more so in these lean times, at stripping, mending or reworking as much kit as possible on board. The slightly trickier issue of hull disposal and GRP recycling is however one nut still to crack. ELB or end-of-life boats is once again on the EU agenda with a study on the likely number of GRP hulls needing

to be disposed of, the whole physical process of decommissioning and ultimately who pays. The concept of producer responsibility is one option as already seen with the End of Life Vehicle Directive and the WEEE Directive. The last ICOMIA Report into the decommissioning of end-of-life boats back in 2007 noted that ‘for economical reasons it would be necessary to maximize the volumes for treatment’. In other words, there’s currently not enough GRP to make it financially worthwhile. And that could still be the case with the Contessa 32 celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and still going strong. We might be some way off seeing the volume of boats reaching the end of their useful life but more than that, it’s actually a great example of how sustainable GRP can be. At the Green Blue we have had very

EVEN on a cold crisp Sunday afternoon walk by the sea, I can’t seem to make it past a sailing club without being drawn to rubbish bins. Climbing into dumpsters and peering into the smelly, mouldy recesses of wheelie bins is definitely an occupational obsession for The Green Blue team. But the more you rummage, the more amazing things you uncover – plimsolls (and always odd plimsolls or a lonely trainer), hoovers, punctured inflatable crocodiles or half eaten burgers. I stumbled on a TV programme recently that sifted through the various contents of a typical Victorian household’s rubbish. The striking difference between rubbish in those days, according to ‘Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management’ – the best seller of 1861 – and the way we currently live our lives is that everything in the bin had a value. Dust – the name for rubbish and from where we get dustmen – wasn’t rubbish

COMPANY FOCUS ADVeRtISING FeAtURe

FOUl weather gear can be a sizeable investment but also an essential requirement for spending time at sea. So it makes good sense to look after this equipment. Pressing Needs, a laundry and dry cleaning company based close to the River Hamble can offer a specially developed laundry process to increase the life and maintain the performance of foul weather gear. they have worked closely with their laundry chemical supplier and equipment supplier to develop this process. the results have been very good.

the initial sluice bath soaks and lifts away any surface salt deposits. this is followed by a second bath where a combination of detergents and more mechanical action breaks down further soiling. Some areas of heavy soiling around cuffs etc, if left to build up excessively, can be difficult to remove. three rinse baths to remove any residue of the detergents and soiling follows the cleaning baths. During the third rinse a re-proofing agent is added. this uses short chain C6-Chemistry to coat individual fibres. the garment is then dried in a tightly controlled process to fuse the reproofing agent

Water pools on surface of fabric & runs off

Short Chain C6-Chemistry coat individual fibres Allows fabric to breathe

How the re-proofing works

around the fibres. Once the re-proofing agent is fused the fabric remains breathable but causes water to pool on the surface and run off. this is because the area between the fibres are not blocked, allowing air the pass through, but are too small for water to penetrate. With the salt deposits removed, the overall appearance is better and any zips that were locked up with salt are now free to move. the company is also able to offer a full laundry service to the marine community for every thing from sleeping bags and bedding to a ‘wash, dry and fold’ service for clothing. Using their extensive range of laundry equipment that includes a large capacity 40kg washing machine, they are also able to offer a service for deck and sail covers. there are three ways in which this service can be accessed the first being the use of a free collection and delivery van service. this covers an area from

After

lymington to Bognor Regis and then north to take in the Meon Valley, Winchester, Salisbury and Ringwood. the second way is to take the garments to one of their three retail counters at Park Gate, Stubbington and lowford, which are open Monday to Saturday. the third option is to use a courier service to deliver to the Park Gate factory, then after processing, the garments will be couriered back.

Since being established in 1989, Pressing Needs has seen a good steady growth rate as a result of offering an excellent level of service and customer care, with a very high level of repeat business and recommendation. In these times of ‘belt tightening’ we should look after the assets that we have, so it makes sense to look after our investment in quality foul weather gear to keep its level of performance high and to prolong its life.

Brits on top at USBA finals OCTOBER saw some of Britain’s top Jet Skiers head to the IJSBA World Finals at Lake Havasu, Arizona. Among them were James Bushell, 27, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, Brad Rickaby, 18, of Hatfield, Doncaster and Young Freestyler Jack Moule, 17, from St Albans Hertfordshire. The finals saw 804 entries from 40 different nations and 39 US States attending battling it out for titles in a total of 48 closed-course racing classes as well as Pro Freestyle and Amateur Freestyle. In brilliant sunshine and light winds, with air temperatures hovering in the low 80s and tough racing conditions, the final eight were decided in front of a standing room only crowd of more than 7,000 enthusiastic fans. Britain’s James Bushell clinched both the World JJSBA 2011 Pro-Am GP Runabout and Pro Runabout Championship titles. In claiming the World IJSBA 2011 Pro-Am GP Runabout Championship on Saturday, Bushell racked up five world titles in his 11 years of racing. Going in to Sunday’s Pro Runabout Motos, Bushell was the fastest qualifier in the class of 29 riders. Taking second

in the first 12-lap moto and winning the second moto secured him his sixth world crown, beating former World Champion Dustin Farthing of the USA into second place. In what can only be described as a perfect year Bushell comes to the end of the season having clinched two world, two European and two British titles. Rickaby, who only took up the sport four years ago, saw off the challenge of some of the world’s leading riders to win gold in the Novice Stock class eclipsing his fourth place finish in the same event last year and his British Championship crown. Brad, also finished second in the Novice Limited class in Arizona, and

teamed up with James at Lake Havasu for the showpiece finals of the jet-ski calendar. The two-man team was outnumbered by several of the competing countries but the pair still guided Britain to a joint third placed finish in the Nations Cup behind the United States and Kuwait. Meanwhile Jack Moule, who has been touring Great Britain this summer with the P1 AquaX series, dazzling the crowds at each round of the competition with his freestyle skills, secured an awesome silver medal in the World Amateur Freestyle competition in far from perfect conditions. Despite the poor conditions Jack held his own impressing the judges as he turned trick after trick and was narrowly beaten by America’s Derrick Kemnitz Jr off the top spot. Of the 50 IJSBA World Championships decided, a total of 17 different countries won titles. Leading the way was the United States with 14, followed by Kuwait with eight, Estonia, Great Britain, Portugal, Serbia and Sweden (three each) along with France, Thailand and United Arab Emirates (two each). Well done guys and I’m sure there will be plenty more medals in 2012!

GEOFF HOLT

The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.

YJA YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR 2010

Wetwheels is power for good

LESS than four months from having the initial idea, Wetwheels, my fully accessible nine metre Cheetah catamaran, was delivered on time and on budget. She made her debut at the PSP Southampton Boat Show where she was named by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan. During her ten days at the Show, Wetwheels was in use constantly at the “try a boat” stand taking out in excess of 280 people, including more than 50 wheelchair users, which is more than I could have wished for. Powerboating is a bit of a departure for me but it’s not as much as it may first seem. Sailing will always be part of my life but sometimes it is as much about just getting afloat as it is about the method you choose to do so. There will always be a degree of snobbery from both camps, sailing v motor-boating, rag and stick v stinkpot. I have witnessed the pleasure derived from being afloat on thousands of disabled people’s faces, regardless of the vessel they use, and for every person who likes the feeling of being “at one with nature” on a sailing boat, there is another who prefers not to lean from side to side

and wants to remain warm and dry. And as for the environmental arguments, I suspect most yachtsmen use cars, so it’s a rather hypocritical stance to take. For these reasons, and with no end of disabled sailing opportunities already available, I wanted to design an accessible motorboat. The result is Wetwheels. Apart from lots of open deck space, my three main design criteria were a side-opening door wide enough for wheelchair users to have access from pontoon to the deck area, lock-down positions for up to three wheelchairs on the aft deck plus a raised helming position for me to drive the boat from my wheelchair.

Although fully accessible, she is also MCA coded for 12 persons and I’ve already been taking charter enquiries from fishermen, for use as a filming platform and as an event support vessel. Impressive as she looks on the dock, her party-piece is best witnessed on the water. With twin 300 hp Suzuki engines, she is rather quick, in fact she can go well north of 40 knots at which point two things happen – the smiles get bigger as does the fuel bill. As Dame Mary said when she was thanking my sponsors at the naming ceremony: “If there are any petrol companies listening who would like to sponsor a good cause, contact Geoff”. Sadly the phone hasn’t rung yet. Of the disabled kids and adults who came out for a spin at the show were groups from Rose Road Association, Naomi House Hospice, the Hexagon Centre plus members of several Sailability groups, many with profound and complex disabilities. We were limited to 25 knots on the test area but that was plenty fast enough for most and just being on the water with the breeze offered a sensory feast for many.

The young people had a fantastic time on the boat. It really gave them an opportunity to experience the thrill of powerboat riding

Jenny Astall from Naomi House commented: “The young people had a fantastic time on the boat. It really gave them an opportunity to experience the thrill of powerboat riding, something they wouldn’t usually get the chance to do”. The speed freaks from the Hexagon Centre in Southampton chose to express their pleasure in a different way by shouting “faster, faster…” to skipper Tony Salmon. I must say a huge thank you to Suzuki and the British Marine Federation for allowing Wetwheels to be at the show and for managing and operating all the bookings, without whom it would have been much more of a challenge. Wetwheels will be based at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth where she will be operated for both commercial charter and charitable use. I would encourage local disabled clubs or groups to make contact and arrange a booking. Charges will apply to cover fuel and skipper costs but these will be heavily subsidised and it may also be possible to apply for a grant to contribute financially. For more information, visit www.wetwheels.co.uk.

DIARY DATE Saturday 12 November:

“An Evening with Geoff Holt” at the Royal Maritime Club, Portsmouth, in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and Simon Says charities. For further information, contact alice@geoffholt.com

SORRY ABOUT LAST MONTH

LAST month’s column carried pictures of wheelchair users aboard Wetwheels and the naming ceremony but the words were a repeat of the previous month’s column. Sorry for the confusion which was not Geoff’s fault.

New look to keep up with our customers tHe Southampton Boat Show brought with it an opportunity for visitors to see A.S.A.P. Supplies’ new look stand. this is one part of the ‘fresh look’ which is intended to highlight to customers the goals A.S.A.P. is striving to achieve as one of the more familiar names in the marine leisure and commercial sectors. the website at www.asap-supplies.com has undergone a complete new look, with many changes taking place to make navigation and ordering from the 11,000 stock lines easier. the website came from customer demand and the changes are ongoing to suit the varying types of customer that visit the site. It provides simple 24/7 access to online ordering and product information. the improvements are continuing and there is now a dedicated team working to make the additions customers want to see. Operations Director Shaun Wigley said: “Our fresh look is one way

of showing the world that we are adapting with the times. We want customers to know that we will continue to live up to our name. “We always strive not to let anyone down – so our business model is based around our customers.” Shaun has been with the company for seven years, beginning in the Customer Service department and moving up towards management. He now leads the company along with a board of directors and the backing of some 30 staff dedicated to keeping A.S.A.P.’s name at the forefront. “We would like to thank customers for the feedback we receive – constructive or good, it all helps us plan our next steps to be the best we can be for our customers. Shaun added: “We have been complimented recently with some very positive feedback (including the new look stand), which came from customers satisfied with the service we provided. We work closely with our

customers and listen - this is how we know where we are going right.” this is illustrated by the Parker award recently given to the company, made only possible by the continued business of repeat Customers. Founded in 1989 by Peter edwards and Mark Reynolds, A.S.A.P. Supplies ltd have more than 11,000 stock lines available with products constantly being sourced that prove to be of interest throughout all sectors of the industry. and efficiency, new faces which have strengthened the team and restructuring within the company to make the best use of resources. “these changes help us to grow in time with our customers’ needs. It’s hard work, but we have faith that we know our customers well and can continue to be their first port of call when it comes to moving their businesses and interests forward,” said Shaun. A new catalogue to be launched in the Spring of 2012 will also bring

with it updated images, new products and even more information. By preregistering for the 2012 Catalogue at SBS, Customers will be entered into free prize draw to win a boating holiday. Many people took the opportunity at the show to snap up a copy and the chance is still there - visit the online store or the stand at upcoming shows for more information. You can catch the new stand at MetS 2011 15th-17th November, stand 03-315 and also at the london Boat Show 2012, stand D129.

STICKY’S TIPS

BY STICKY STAPYLTON

Waiting time provides chance to clean ship WE WERE moored in Queensway Marina in Gibraltar for five days waiting for a headsail furling gear spare part. The forestay parted from the base section just off Ushant and we motored and motor sailed for a bit over 1,400 miles in order not to put the rigging under unnecessary stress. What was so frustrating was that the parcel services promised delivery within 48 hours and it was four days since the parts were dispatched. Owners on a boat down the pontoon from us had been waiting over a fortnight for a rigger to just look at their boat. We were lucky because our boat’s owner, warned of our problem, signalled ahead of us and we had a rigger on board within four hours of our arrival. Sean Smith, Sheppard’s rigger was outstanding, even volunteering to drive into Spain to pick up our parts should they be held up within driving distance.

Trevor Woolley, the workshop manager was also very helpful. Sitting in the marina gave us the chance to tidy and clean up the boat as well as to look at some of our stowage. The photos show the stowage of a fire extinguisher in a cockpit locker on its own the second with the extra kit packed around it. This is a powder extinguisher and ideally should be stowed vertically. If stowed horizontally and if the boat is not shaken around too much, the powder can solidify so when the trigger is depressed, the only thing that comes out is the propellant gas. So lesson number one is stow fire extinguishers vertically. Second, can you see yourself getting the extinguisher out quickly? I have just been introduced to an excellent weather application to go on my iPhone. It is called Pocket Grib and

has proved remarkably accurate in its predictions, certainly in the Straits of Gibraltar where we had to take refuge from the Levanter for three days. The Levanter or east wind persists for anything up to a week. When it blows, the winds can be a mild f3 or f4 off Gibraltar but where the straits are at their narrowest, off Tarifa, gusts can be 35 - 40 knots.

PRACTICAL WINTERISATION

LAID UP READY FOR

WINTER AS winter approaches there are some important practical things you need to do to get your boat prepared for the cold months ahead. The more thorough your preparation now, the more you can expect a successful de-winterisation in the spring. Here are some tips to help you through the serious task of winterising your boat.

Drying out HAVE a good clean and tidy of everything below deck. The reason a tidy-up is needed is to preemptively tackle the big problem that affects the interiors of all boats: damp. Damp and condensation will spur on mould and mildew, encourage wood rot and positively aid the rusting of metal. The way to avoid coming back to an aged vessel after the winter break is firstly to remove as many items as possible to

Engines

YOUR owner’s manual will have some storage guidelines that you must treat as basic requirements – failure to do so may result in your insurance company leaving you out in the cold should something happen. If there is less than half of any anode remaining on your outdrive, shaftdrive or outboard, it is best to replace it. Anodes are relatively inexpensive but provide valuable protection, keeping corrosion of the engine and drive components at bay. They are all easy to replace, except perhaps for any internal anodes located in engine cooling passages. The manual will show you the correct location and how to replace them. Changing the oil and filter on any four-stroke engine is essential, first allowing the engine to reach working temperature with the old oil. Used oil contains all sorts of nasties and contaminants that will work tirelessly on the internal operating parts of the engine throughout the winter. Once the oil is renewed, spin the engine over several times with the plug leads or fuel supply disconnected to distribute the clean oil internally without the engine starting. Fill fuel tanks to the brim using an additive to prevent tank corrosion and keep the fuel fresh. Alternatively, drain the tank completely, not forgetting to thoroughly clean the tank and any fuel pick-up tube filter. Some manufacturers suggest an

store at home, in a dry, well ventilated area, give everything a very good clean with fresh water, then make sure everything dries. If you have power to your boat over the winter and your yard allows it, consider getting a dehumidifier. It will keep your boat condensation free over the cold months.

additive for the last carburettor of fuel, but some don’t, so check first. Also, check and replace all fuel filters if required. The internal surfaces of the engine need protection. Completely drain all carburettors and fuel lines, or let the engine run until it stops from fuel starvation. Then remove the plugs or injectors, and pour a teaspoon of engine oil into each cylinder. Leave the plugs or injectors out and spin the engine to distribute the oil, and then lightly screw in the plugs or injectors. Make sure you leave a note attached to the ignition as a reminder to tighten them for the new season before firing up. All water needs to be drained from inboard and outboard cooling passages to prevent freezing and possible damage. An outboard engine can be left upright for an hour or two to drain but inboards require a little more work. If the inboard is raw water cooled, drain all cooling passages, water intakes, pumps and hoses and then block the inlet with a rag soaked in oil to prevent damp air finding its way in. Additionally, with a freshwater-cooled inboard, check the anti-freeze solution is up to scratch in the sealed system and then run the engine, adding antifreeze to the last bucket full of raw water to prevent freezing in any passages where water may be trapped. It is often better to remove the raw water impellor, leaving a reminder attached.

Waiting time provides chance to clean ship – see Sticky’s Tips on page 20

SAILS, like the insides of your boat, suffer dearly from mildew and mould inspired by the relentless damp. The inevitable presence of salt on your sails will also absorb moisture, helping to spur on the green menace. Remove them from the boat, give them a good scrubbing with fresh water and then dry them before storing them away in a dry and well-ventilated area. Any water left on your sails during its time furled up in storage will foster the mould and mildew you were trying to get rid of. Ideally they should be hung up – or alternatively you can lay your sail out to dry.

Slacken the alternator belt, replace the gearbox oil and lubricate everything else including operating cables and seacocks. Change the engine oil and filter. This will help remove the acids and other byproducts that build up during use. Add a water/antifreeze mix to the engine’s cooling system. Spray the engine with fogging oil, especially important for diesels, after fogging oil has been applied, the engine should be run until it stops – which should only take five to ten seconds at the most, otherwise engine damage may occur. Disconnect and remove the battery, grease the terminals and take the battery home.

Check lubrication on swivel and screw clamps

Check the electrolyte level, regularly charge and discharge the battery but be careful not to overcharge it. Do not let the battery freeze. You could also place a small electric heater in the engine bay to help protect your engine from frost – as long as you have power available and if your yard allows it. Winterising your engine is the most technical part of the whole process, if in doubt talk to your yard and consider employing their services. There is no shame in someone doing this delicate work for you.

WINTERISATION

Get in touch with stories from your area: news@allatsea.co.uk

’tis the season to get the knowledge – turn to the RYA Focus on page 22

Anti-fouling IT IS not just the surfaces above the waterline that need some tlc, another vital part of preparing for the winter is stripping off all the marine growth from the underbelly of your craft. Have the boat lifted out of the water and pressure wash the hull. With a bit of elbow grease and maybe some help from bribed friends, clean, clean and clean until all the weeds, barnacles and whatever else has attached itself to your hull have been thoroughly vanquished. You should be left with a ‘fresh out of the packet’ clean look. Finally, make a check for any damage to your hull and have a look to see if any blisters have appeared. Blisters are one of the harbingers of osmosis, if you spot any – talk to your yard.

Storage

NOW your boat is prepared to idle for the winter, you then need to think how you are going to store it. The most common method to store ashore is by propping it up on jackstands or placing it in a cradle. This will give you the opportunity to work on your boat throughout the winter. In terms of security, remember that boat yards will become far less populated during the colder months, with some turning into veritable ghost towns. Sadly, there will always be thieves about and boats on jackstands present

nice targets. Make sure you don’t leave any expensive looking toys on show. Those covering their boats should also remember NOT to attach said covers to the jackstands underneath. With sufficient wind bellowing, you risk moving the stands enough to either drop your boat or even blow over. If it happens, you’ll get more than just a slapped wrist. For motor boaters, dry stacking is a good option. Dry stacks are more suited to those looking to keep their craft in commission throughout the winter thanks to their year round service.

OngOing winter checks

When you come back in the spring, apply at least one coat of anti-fouling to protect your boat for the upcoming season.

IF YOUR boat is accessible try to maintain a regular sequence of checks to keep everything in good order, ready for the Spring . . .

BOAT

 Continue with overall cover checks for ventilation, tight spots abrading the gelcoat, and water ingress.  Dry and reuse any moisture absorbent strips you may have placed below windows and hatches to catch condensation.  turn the steering to full lock in both directions to distribute the grease in the cable and keep it free.  Check there is no water in the bilge or anywhere else that might freeze and expand.

ENGINE

 Inspect carefully to ensure all is well. If you did the winterising process correctly, there should be little to cause concern.  Check that all rags that plug up inboard engine holes are in place, and spray them copiously with WD40.  Remove the outboard hood and inspect the powerhead for any water that may have become trapped. An additional spray of WD40 on the powerhead will help keep damp at bay.  Check the battery is fully charged and the electrolyte levels are correct.

And if in doubt . . .

Photo courtesy of Sports Boat and RIB Magazine

IF LIKE many of us, you lack the confidence to tackle any of the technical jobs, remember that your yard will offer winterising services. In fact, many boaters go for this option as it guarantees peace of mind and if something does go wrong you can just take it back to the yard rather than explain what you did to it. On that note, keep in mind that boat yards fill up early for both storage and maintenance so make sure you plan ahead.

A base with rich history

29

ALL AT SEA NOVEMBER 2011

For even more up to the minute news visit: www.allatsea.co.uk WHEN the Admiralty decided to make Portsmouth their principal naval base, they did so for a number of reasons: Superb shelter and protection, an all tide deep water port with the English Channel close at hand and also the sheltered waters of the Solent on your doorstep. Much has changed since the halcyon navy days of Nelson but the Victory still remains, as do all the features that contribute to this being such an excellent naval base. Indeed, it has everything to make it a yachtsman’s paradise and there is no shortage of marinas to choose from within its confines. Three of the main marinas are across the harbour in Gosport, a five minute trip to Portsmouth on a ferry or about an hour long epic in a car. Gosport Marina, locally always referred to as Camper an Nicholson’s is one of the three and has a rich history, being connected to the yard which produced such classics as Shamrock V and Gipsy Moth IV. Nowadays the marina is run as a separate entity to the historic yard, and has gradually expanded over the years. The marina offers a full range of facilities on site, including chandlers and lift-out for boats up to 120 tons.

CRUISING GROUNDS

In terms of a day’s sail, anywhere within the Solent is within reach and eulogising too much about the joys of Yarmouth or Beaulieu and the like is a fairly hackneyed subject. Suffice to say that from Gosport Marina, the Solent is your oyster. Cowes, Yarmouth and Newtown Creek are all on your doorstep and within a couple hours sail. Carry on heading west and you can make Poole in a day with a fair wind, while heading east, Eastbourne is well within reach. If you want to stay local but are keen to escape from the hurly burly of the Solent, Langstone Harbour, the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour or Chichester all offer great potential for a bit of tranquil creek crawling. If you’re planning on going foreign, Portsmouth is a great starting point, with Cherbourg just a stone’s throw away, well, certainly a day’s cruising away. The beauty is that if you need to go home for the weekend, there are excellent ferry services running between Portsmouth and France, which is extremely convenient.

ENTERING GOSPORT MARINA

BERTHING AND FACILITIES GOSPORT APPROACH

Gosport Marina is situated just inside the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour. The harbour is a busy commercial, naval and leisure port so care should always be taken in and around the entrance. All yachts must use the Small Boat Channel, which is 50m wide running from No 4 (Q.R) bar buoy in the south to the Ballast Buoy (Fl.R 2.5s) in the north. The speed limit in the harbour is ten knots. Be wary also of the shallow water over Hamilton Bank. All vessels with engines must use them in The Small Boat Channel. Vessels over 20m must contact the Queen’s Harbour Master on VHF Channel 11 before entering or leaving harbour. Any vessels crossing the harbour to Gunwharf Quays or the town camber in Portsmouth must call ‘QHM’ for permission on VHF Channel 11 and cross north of Ballast. Remain 50m clear of all warships and MoD berths and facilities.

HARBOUR MASTER You can contact the marina on VHF channel 80 or by calling 0n 02392 524 811. Contact the Queen’s Harbour Master on 023 9272 3694 or VHF Channel 11 before entering or leaving harbour. FACILITIES Gosport offers fuel at cost. There is ample car parking, water and electricity on pontoons, a launderette, showers and storage ashore. WiFi is also available. Meanwhile, the adjoining yard can lift out boats up to 180 tons and also have a scrubbing grid. YACHT BROKERAGE Ancasta International Boat Sales is based at Gosport. Contact: 02392 524821 Gosport Marina Mumby Road, Gosport Hampshire PO12 1AH

First up, it’s perhaps fair to mention that generally, it is recommended taking the five minute trip on the ferry if you fancy a wider range of pubs, shops and restaurants. The ferry runs every day apart from Christmas day from 0530 to midnight with services going every ten minutes or so from a pier about 50m away from the marina. It drops you in central Portsmouth next to Portsmouth Harbour railway station. Fares are £2.40 for an adult return. Contact 02392 524 551.

CHANDLERS

In terms of chandlery, both the on site chandlers, You Boat, and also Arthur’s Chandlers are held in high regard, which is located a couple of hundred metres away on Mumby Road.

SUPPLIES

There is a Morrisons at the bottom of Walpole Road, which is a five minute walk through the town centre and this is the ideal place to get the boat vittled up and ready for a cross-channel cruise.

WHERE TO EAT

For those who fancy treating themselves, Gunwharf Quay, situated directly opposite Gosport, about a five minute walk from the ferry, offers a huge range of restaurants, pubs and clubs. Closer to home, Landers grill/ restaurant is a couple of hundred metres down Haslar Road, which provides excellent value for money.

WHERE TO DRINK

If you fancy a drink a bit closer to your boat, the Castle Tavern is right on your doorstep and offers a good range of ales and beers in addition to bar snacks and meals in a suitably convivial atmosphere that reminds you that the traditional British pub is still in existence.

If you fancy a late night session, Gunwharf Quays offers more clubs than you can shake a glow stick at, although its worth bearing in mind that the ferry stops running at 0030, although there is an extended late night service during the summer months.

WHAT TO SEE

Again heading across the water away from Gosport is the historical Naval Dockyard, which houses HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose. There can’t be too many places in the world where three such historically significant ships are kept in such close proximity. In addition the National Museum of the Royal Navy is also on site and well worth a browse. For anyone with an interest in boats, a day could happily be spent in the dockyard wandering around with mouth agape. The Naval presence is everywhere and for those stranded in Gosport, you can always pay a visit to Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower, or the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, which are both near the marina. If you fancy a change of perspective, in Gunwharf Quays is the Spinnaker Tower, a recent addition to the Portsmouth skyline. You can get to the top and look down on the city for a modest fee. Gunwharf also has a cinema and bowling alley. Beyond this, the Blue Reef Aquarium is nearby on Clarence Esplanade, Southsea and should keep the kids entertained for a while. If it’s a pleasant stroll you fancy to regain your land legs, then Southsea waterfront provides plenty to look at with many of the historical fortifications still in place and very pleasant views across to the Isle of Wight.

PROPERTY

Property is a special section spotlighting the best residential and commercial developments by the waterside and along the coast. Peter Halliday from Waterside Properties reports.

LIVING ON THE WATER

Marina Villages

SINCE 1985 numerous marina villages have sprung up in the UK, especially along the South Coast, inspired by those overseas, such as Port Grimaud or Baie des Ange in Mediterranean France. Their unique format of houses or apartments around a marina basin with moorings for boats literally at the bottom of the garden brought a new dimension to waterside living. A secure haven for yachties or for those just wishing to breathe the sea air was born. Around these villages were restaurants, yacht clubs, marina facilities, trendy shops which together formed a very appealing lifestyle proposition. These gems have now matured but their lustre and lifestyle opportunities remain fully intact. Each marina village is unique in style and character, villagey, towny, or their own self sufficient marina campus. Buyers wander from one to another to decide which one suits them. And then they buy! Here is a table to help you begin your search to find your ideal marina village and who knows, maybe your ultimate dream home. It is not exhaustive but it is a start. When you are done, hop in the car, head to the coast and start that research. Welcome aboard. www.watersideproperties.com

SMALL AT SEA JUST FOR KIDS

WINDSURFING WHIZZES AT TEAM15 CHAMPIONS CUP AT THE beginning of last month more than a hundred young windsurfers aged eight to 15 from across the country headed to Northampton Sailing Club to do battle at the grand final of the Team15 Champions Cup. The young racers battled it out in a bid to claim the winners’ cup and be crowned Champions of Champions 2011. Competition was fierce throughout the weekend but it was the West Kirby Warriors who came out on top and raised the magnificent trophy. We spoke to event first timer Tadgh Al Hassan, 11, from the Oxford Zoomers team, who clinched second place, to tell us all about the Team15 and give us his tips on getting started.

 So Tadgh what’s been going on here at the Champions Cup?

We’ve all been zooming around having fun. We have done a couple of races and then a fun race, which was great.

 How did you and your team do?

This was my first time at the Champions Cup and I think I did OK but as a team we did really well in the 3.5 metre class with five team members in the top ten. We really put some pressure on the other teams, that’s for sure, and we managed to get second place for the second year running.

 What did your team have to do to qualify?

Qualifying was really close for us. At the end of all the heats there was a draw between us and another team from the zone. They checked all the results and the points were exactly the same so in the end the judges had to look back at last years’ results, where luckily we were one point ahead of the other team, so we took the spot at the final.

 What was the weather like for racing?

Luckily the weather was good and the rain held off. There was plenty of wind most of the time but at times it was a bit tricky as there was very little wind.

 How did you get into windsurfing?

Champions – West Kirby Warriors

My friend Theo was doing his level 2 course and I asked if I could come along. He said I could and he actually came and did level one with me again. We then went on to complete level’s two and three together.

You can watch a great video of all the action from the Team15 Champions Cup event at http://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/news/Pages/ windsurfingWestKirbyWarriorscrownedTeam152011Champions.aspx Want to find out more about Team15? Then check out the website at www.team15.org.uk

 What do you like about windsurfing?

It is loads of fun and you get to go really fast. All you need is a board, and as long as there is water and wind you can go. I think my Mum likes coming along to watch as well.

 What would you say to other kids thinking about trying windsurfing?

Try and find a club near you and go along and see what they have to offer. If you’re nervous I would say start small, learn one step at a time. Don’t try and run before you can walk and before you know it you’ll find yourself with huge sails and cruising along.

 Have you enjoyed the Champions Cup event?

I’ve had a great weekend and I definitely want to come back again next year.

Tadhg in action

Sophie and Sam

ALL AT SEA NOVEMBER 2011

BOOKS

AS we head for autumn’s shorter days and longer evenings All at Sea focuses on books about boating as reading about our favourite pastime becomes almost as much fun as getting on the water.

NOVEMBER 2011

CLASSIC CHOICE: SEA CHANGE

SEA Change was published back in the late ‘90s. Superficially it looks like so many other selfpenned journals of sailing trips. In this instance, Nichols, a recent divorcee and experienced sailor, decided to sail his old wooden boat across the Atlantic to the USA as he had heard that classics are getting good prices over there. Having lived aboard the boat with his ex wife for many years, this was clearly a bit of a wrench and he spends a lot of time mulling this over as he headed westwards. As he did, Toad became increasingly leaky and cranky. So far, so much the same as millions of other cruising narratives but the thing that sets this one apart is that as the cruise went on it was clear that not only was Toad disintegrating, so was Nichols. His muses about what went wrong with his marriage and his doubts as to where his life was heading that make this so compelling. Despite the subject matter, this is not a dark book; there is plenty of humour and also a great deal of hope. Author: Peter Nichols Publisher: Various • Price: From 40p

HOSTAGE: A YEAR AT GUNPOINT WITH SOMALI GANGSTERS

THE Chandlers’ travails at the hands of Somali pirates has been an ongoing saga which has attracted a huge amount of media attention and they continue to dominate the headlines despite their release but this book will appeal to a wide part of the yachting community. While some may not have huge sympathy for yachtsmen captured by pirates off the Horn of Africa, the Chandlers are different. THIS is a book it would good to receive when you are trying to work out how to get a job in the marine industry. It treads close to where Jeremy Evans’ Working with Water went a couple of years back, promising to help you ‘find a job, start a business and change your life’. It even has Ben Ainslie’s seal of approval: He states on the cover that it is ‘a really useful aid to kick start your sailing career’. He even has some tips on how to date a Cheeky Girl. The book covers the whole gamut of marine jobs from working in the media, dinghy instructing, and maintenance. The text is readable and punctuated with plenty of case studies to ensure it’s not monotonous. Author: Sue Pelling • Publisher: Wiley Nautical ISBN: 978-0-470-97564-0 • Price: £14.99

RYA PASSAGE PLANNING RYA Passage Planning takes you through that all important and sometimes overlooked art of planning your sailing trip before you actually go. The purpose of this is to prevent you from sailing absolutely nowhere for six hours as you sail against a foul tide, or blunder into overfalls. This is a useful little guide and a useful aide memoire – if you are an experienced sailor you should already be doing all this planning but, we all slip up once in a while. Author: Peter Chennell Publisher: RYA Publications ISBN: 978-1-906435-49-3 • Price: £12.99

MONTEREY’S newest addition to its popular Cruiser line is the all new 415 IPS Sport Yacht with the explosive performance and outstanding handling that characterises this fine marque. Cruiser floor plans are spacious with plenty of seating, a cockpit wet bar for entertaining and easy access to the cabin and foredeck. Below deck Monterey’s class and sophistication are unparalleled with cherrywood joinery, cedar lined lockers and granitecoat surfaces - in harmony with superb galley features, practical heads and luxurious sleeping quarters. Motor Boats Monthly, commenting on value and build quality, said “……. the outright bargain of the bunch must be the Monterey. While this may not come as a surprise, given it’s the cheapest of our quartet, value for money is about much more than just a low price. This boat delivers great build and some ‘best in class’ features.”.... “making the entire Monterey range that rarest of boating beasts - one that is cheaper than you think” Come and look over our MONTEREY demonstrators at Hamble Point Marina!

IN THE DRINK

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink

BY PAUL ANTROBUS

Fizz . . . Italian style THE Christmas party season is fast approaching: Check out Prosecco for a slightly different type of bubbly and its related Bellini cocktail. Prosecco defines a specific type of wine as well as the specific grape variety from which it’s made. The wine is Italy’s answer to Spanish Cava and a similar price-bargain versus Champagne. Popular all over Italy and rapidly growing as a favourite in the UK, it has developed its own cachet as a sophisticated wine with gentle flavour for parties or pre-dinner apéritifs. At a recent sailing-oriented party hosted by the super de luxe Panerai Italian watches company the drinks offered were exclusively Prosecco straight or a Prosecco-Campari mix. Excellent! If it s good enough for Panerai it is acceptable anywhere. The grape is from the Veneto region of Italy. The Prosecco region is midway between Venice and the Alps with its own DOC designation. Called the Charmat method, the production differs from that of Champagne. The second fermentation to produce the natural carbonation fizz is in pressurised steel tanks for about a month. That’s much faster than Champagne and there is no hand-turning of the maturing bottles in the cellars. The quality is not less, just different. The bubbles are gentle, the flavour fruity, the texture crisp. Once bottled, there is no more fermentation so it is best to drink Prosecco young and within three years of bottling. As with Champagne, there are different versions from brut to sweet and, just like Champagne, the brut or extra dry seem to be the most popular for the UK palate. At least a dozen brands come out of Italy but, while distribution is improving, most UK supermarkets and even wine websites only have a couple on offer, generally only brut or extra brut. But I found a selection of five brands on

www.majestic.co.uk. Expect to pay between £7 and £9 for a 75cl bottle, comparable to Cava and less than half the best-buy Champagnes. Don’t be put off by the term ‘spumante’ which has been rather sullied by some poor quality sweet sparkling wines in the past. ‘Spumante’ means fully sparkling and ’frizzante’ means gently sparkling. It depends on how long the wine is matured in the Charmat tanks and if it is Prosecco it will be good and ‘spumante’ sparkling. Prosecco is excellent as a summertime drink, too. The bottle designs tend to be low centre of gravity with long necks so an ideal shape for stability on the cockpit table! What of the cocktails? It is common in Italy for Prosecco to be drunk with a variety of fruit juices, but the most famous mix is the Bellini. This was invented around 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of Harry’s Bar in Venice. Its pink colour reminded him of a toga in a painting by 15th-century Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini! Put one measure of peach purée or juice in a flute glass, add a drop of raspberry or cherry juice, top out with two measures of Prosecco.
