PAGE 1 STORY EMIRATES Team New Zealand pushed Telefonica hard over the closing days but even the best 24-hour run of the leg could not get them close, while Groupama sailing team’s offshore debut saw them finish third, three days behind the winners.

Telefonica leads the race with a total of 31 points - 30 for victory in the first offshore leg and one point for coming last in the Iberdrola in-port race back in Alicante.

But it was not such plain sailing for other yachts.

There was drama during the racing but that was nothing compared to the tales of those forced out during the 6,500 nautical mile first leg.

      

Less than 24 hours after the start, Team Sanya were forced to retire from the leg with problems in the bow section of their second-generation Volvo 70 sustained in heavy seas off Spain’s Mediterranean coast.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team had already been dismasted by then and though the team briefly got back in the Leg 1 running they decided they would be better working on their rigging and shipping the boat on.

The queue to find suitable shipping options to Cape Town would only get longer as the leg progressed.

Once out of the Mediterranean, the survival contest turned to more traditional competition and an open ocean race southwards.

COAST WALK

tHe Wales Coast Path has been extended with a new stretch of the path running four miles from Flint through to Greenfield Dock officially opened by environment Minister, John Griffiths. the Welsh Government has invested up to £2 million a year since 2007 in a bid to create a continuous, 870-mile path around the coastline of Wales. the path is due for completion in May 21012 and is expected to attract an extra 100,000 new visitors to the Welsh coast each year.

THE RYA VAS the Clipper 11-12 around the world race fleet set sail from the opposite side of the planet the date was set for the return to Southampton next summer.

With Race 6 from Tauranga, New Zealand to Australia’s Gold Coast underway, organises were already planning for a triumphant Solent homecoming on Sunday 22 July 2012.

Southampton City Council, MDL Marinas at Ocean Village and race organisers Clipper Ventures are preparing for the return of the tenstrong international race fleet of 68-foot yachts just five days before the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

on December 4 as the teams set out into the lively waters of New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty for the start of the sixth stage.

They were accompanied by a huge flotilla of local boating enthusiasts.

Gold Coast Australia secured their fifth consecutive victory in the 15-race series when they arrived in New Zealand and the crew desperately want to win the sixth race.

If they do they will be the first team in Clipper 11-12 to secure a coveted home port victory and only the third in the history of the event.

That would also equal the most consecutive wins in the Clipper Race, a record set by Alex Thomson in Clipper 98 and held for more than a decade.

Richard Hewson, skipper of Gold Coast Australia said, “If I want to win a race out

of this whole series around the world, it’s this one.”

This is the first time the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race had visited New Zealand since its inception in 1996.

Each yacht is sponsored by an international city, region, country or company. The crews are ordinary people who have done something extraordinary in taking on some of the world’s toughest oceans.

The yachts will have travelled almost 41,000 miles by the time they return to the Solent after visiting 14 ports on six continents.

Around 500 people from all walks of life will have participated, completing a full circumnavigation, or one or more of the eight legs After the east coast of Australia the

fleet will race to Singapore before heading north to China from where they will resume an easterly course across the Pacific towards California.

From there the fleet will go through the Panama Canal, up to New York and Canada, before crossing the Atlantic to visit Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland and Den Helder in the Netherlands, and then Southampton.

The race start in Southampton generated thousands of visitors and stimulated the local economy by filling hotels, restaurants and shops. The finish is expected to have a similar impact. A record number of prospective crew are attending interviews to take part in the next Clipper 13-14 race.

RIVER RACE PAYS

POOle-based RNlI staff and supporters have raised £9,000 for the lifesaving work of the RNlI’s Flood Rescue team by taking part in the 21-mile Great River Race, london’s River Marathon. the RNlI team took on the hefty challenge in the three tonne William Riley – a thames class 34-foot self righting lifeboat built in 1909. the funds raised will go towards training and equipment for the RNlI Flood Rescue team.

Keep sailing!

DECEMBER has brought a proper touch of seasonal chill, and so it should.

We are in the deep end of winter but, although we hardly notice, the nights start drawing, or is it creeping, out again before Christmas. While we might be in a deep freeze by then, some of us begin to throw off the overcoat of seasonally adjusted gloom and begin to look forward to another thrilling boating season ahead.

It might seem over-optimistic but those of us who are depressed by the dark and dank have to have something to put a smile on our faces.

Boating folk are naturally obsessed with the weather and yet we can be as daft as the rest of the population when we express surprise or even comment on the unexpected.

Remember the spring when there was talk of a barbecue summer? That turned out to be a distinctly damp squib. In the summer, the talk was full of dire predictions of an early winter when we would all be locked in by ice and snow.

The signs were there of course.

Trees and fruit bushes were overladen with produce. Migratory birds were arriving or leaving early.

I can’t remember the colour of the leaves on the mistletoe or all the other harbingers of good or bad weather. It did seem boats were being lifted early and moorings in isolated creeks were being abandoned too soon. Perhaps boaters, and especially sailors, have in-built antenae just like birds and other animals.

But, if they relied on their haul-itout and batten-down-the-hatches instincts, they will have missed out on a glorious autumn of long hours of sunshine, little rain and relatively balmy temperatures, in the southern

half of Britain at least.

The downside for some might have been some pretty interesting breezes. Really technical racing sailors might like the challenge of pitting their skills against the most gentle of breezes but the autumn gave south coast sailors a chance to test themselves against stronger stuff, some of it gale force and more.

That was no bad thing. We all need to be reminded of the ferocity of wind and waves and we need experience to be able to deal with them.

The last weekend of November was a perfect time for practice in the safety of the Solent. There were some strong tides, big breezes and powerful gusts. Days were short and temperatures plummeted as darkness arrived but short days make the evenings longer. Cowes enjoyed some lively out of season gossip.

The moral is: don’t put the boat to bed too early – if at all. Invest in some new thermals at the boat show and as Bruce Forsythe might say: “Keep sailing!”

FREELANCE journalist and sailing coach Georgie Corlett is joining All at Sea as editor ready for a huge year for boating when our sailors plan to dominate the Olympics on home waters.

Georgie has written about dinghy sailing and worked at the Beijing Olympics sailing centre. Read her guide to the London Boat Show this month and her expert look at some last minute Christmas gifts for boaters and welcome her aboard from the January edition.

Fast boats from China THE third generation Clipper Race fleet is taking shape on schedule with the first hull being released from its mould in China.

The first of a new 12-strong fleet of Clipper 70s has been released from its mould as the construction of an expanded fleet for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race progresses on schedule ahead of its completion next year.

This is the first of an order for 12 identical new Castro-designed yachts, with an option on four more.

Clipper Chairman Sir Robin KnoxJohnston said: “The new fleet build is progressing on target in Qingdao, China. The new yachts will enter service for the Clipper 13-14 Round the World Yacht Race and continue operating until 2020.”

Digging deep to help save lives WORK has started on the foundations for a new slipway at the new lifeboat station in the Old Custom House in the centre of Cowes.

The volunteer crew of the lifeboat are currently based upstream in Shepards Wharf marina.

The new lifeboat station will bring the lifeboat crew four minutes closer to the open sea, which in turn could prove crucial in saving lives.

The slipway will bridge the gap between the concrete flooring in front of the boathouse down to the lowest point

of the sea bed at low water.

Bob Gerrard, RNLI Shoreworks Divisional Manager East, said: “The ramp will be the slipway down which a wheeled carriage will descend, in order to launch the lifeboat into the River Medina and out to the Solent.”

It is anticipated that the new slipway will be completed early in the New Year.

Bird’s eye views of Olympics WORK has started on groundworks for the new £3.5 million Weymouth Tower.

Concrete piles are being sunk to a depth of 17 metres on Weymouth Pier to provide a circular watertight curtain for the main excavation works.

An official groundbreaking ceremony will be hosted next month when a huge mechanical digger will begin the seven-metre deep hole for the tower’s foundations.

The new visitor attraction from Weymouth Sea Life Park owners Merlin Entertainments Group is set to open next summer.

Soaring 53 metres above the resort’s ferry terminal the tower will stand on the corner of the pier, its slowly revolving observation pod offering dramatic 360-degree bird’s eye views over the Olympic sailing arena.

At its highest point the view on a clear day will extend far beyond Weymouth Bay and Portland into the English Channel and many miles along the Jurassic coast.

New staNdard for bigger berths PReMIeR Brighton marina berthing has introduced an extra package for bigger boat owners. the standard of berthing for boats over 14 metres has been raised at no additional cost. eAStBOURNe’S RNlI lifeboats were both launched to aid a stricken yacht which had grounded on Beachy Head ledge with three crew on board. the holed 30-foot yacht was taking on water and although two crew members managed to scramble ashore to safety, the skipper remained on board. All three sailors were eventually ferried to safety by the inshore lifeboat. they returned to the yacht to salvage items before she had to be abandoned.

WORK will soon begin on two new bridges for yachtsmen visiting Dartmouth to access the town which is unable to cope with the number of visitors.

WRECK TRIBUTE

THE Swanland cargo ship that sank in the early hours of the morning on 27 November was on route to Cowes with a cargo of limestone when the hull cracked in storm force conditions. The vessel and its Russian crew of eight were positioned 20 miles north west of the Llyn Peninsula in north Wales. Cowes Pilot, Rod Hodgson, said: “The captain and crew were a pleasure to work with.” Cowes Harbour Commission extended deepest sympathies for those who died.

Students are Gill Sunsail champions Fighting for Dates released for Warsash Fal Week spring series WEST Country sailors are petitioning the government to drop plans for a marine sanctuary off St Mawes in the Fal estuary which they claim could seriously affect sailing in the area and could even harm the annual Falmouth Regatta week, worth £1.5 million to the town.

The government has proposed a marine conservation zone off St Mawes Bank in Carrick Roads to safeguard wildlife and habitats and which would ban, fishing, dredging, sailing and anchoring.

A Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesman said a full public consultation would take place.

WARSASH Sailing Club has announced dates for the 2012 - the Solent’s premier early season event for keelboats.

SIX Sundays have been earmarked for the Warsash Spring Series with starts in the central Solent. The dates are 18 and 25 March, 1, 15, 22 and 29 April 2.

Dates for the Warsash Spring Championship with racing on Saturday and Sunday, are 21 and 22nd April and 28 an 29th April.

A free ferry service will be available to take competitors to the club after racing.

AN action packed final weekend of racing on the Solent crowned Portsmouth University’s team, skippered by Mark Briggs, the 2011 Gill Sunsail Racing Series champions.

The Briggs team managed to steal victory with nine points in front of second placed team skippered by James Anderson also with 9 points and Sam North’s team with 10 points.

The inaugural year of the series in the new Sunsail F40s cemented

the prowess of the new fleet of 42 identically matched yachts with 680 people participating in eight rounds from March through to November.

Simon Conder, UK Head of Marketing at Sunsail said: “The weekend racing series is perfect for those with busy working weeks and the identically matched F40s ensure close competitive racing.”

NEW MAST FOR LAST VICTORIAN SLOOP

HMS GANNET, Britain’s last sloop of Queen Victoria’s Royal Navy has been given a new mast.

The new 70-foot lower foremast, in two sections and made up of 200 pieces of kiln dried Douglas Fir, was rigged up and fitted between HMS GANNET and HM Submarine OCELOT at Chatham’s Historic

Dockyard before a 300 tonne crane hoisted it up from where it lay.

In keeping with Naval tradition a coin was placed under the base of the mast. The mast was constructed in No. 3 Covered Slip within the historic dockyard by shipwright Ben Jefferies and assisted

by Dave Appleton.

Fund awards will throw spotlight on modern Navy West Elevation as Proposed.

THE Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded just over £1.4m to the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to create new exhibitions on the Navy in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

The grant will help tell the story of the Royal Navy since 1900, a largely untold part of our maritime heritage.

The 18th century Storehouse 10, built in 1776, is one of the finest Georgian storehouses in the UK and will be completely restored providing new exhibition spaces for the museum’s vast collections.

Storehouse 10 will be connected to Storehouse 11 enabling the museum to show four centuries of naval history properly for the first time.

State-of-the-art interactive displays and exhibitions will help bring the collections alive.

Stuart McLeod, Head of HLF for the South East, said: “This project has the potential to entertain, intrigue and delight. It will not only help to bring our impressive maritime heritage alive but boost tourism too.”

Dr Dominic Tweddle, Director-General of the NMRN, said: “Despite the remarkable achievements of the men and women of the Senior Service over the past 100 years, there is no single exhibition in this country that tells their story.

“We are determined to have the new exhibitions opened by 2014, the centenary of the start of World War I, so the Museum can be at the centre of marking the Navy’s vital role.

“By the time these galleries open NMRN will have invested £11.1m in the Portsmouth area, with more to come”

Over the next few years, as well as the development of the NMRN, there will be a new Mary Rose Museum that is due to open in late 2012.

The charity will deliver practice and qualifying expeditions in sailing and kayaking for the Bronze and Silver Award schemes.

UKSA also has the required facilities to deliver Gold Residential programmes.

The awards programme is designed to give young people, aged 14 - 25 years, the chance to develop

BRItISH sailor Ian Williams was crowned the new ISAF Match Racing World Champion after defeating Italian Francesco Bruni in a tense quarter-final of the Monsoon Cup, the final event on the World Match Racing tour.

It is the second consecutive year that a British skipper has won the title after Ben Ainslie took the crown in 2010.

THE Royal Southern Yacht Club bestowed an array of silver and glassware on its members and other winners at the club’s annual Prizegiving Dinner last month.

Commodore, Mark Inkster, was joined by Flag Officers and 175 guests in applauding the winners as they collected their prizes.

The evening’s highlights included the bestowing of an Honorary Membership to Jeremy Robinson.

Jeremy has raced a huge variety of boats for over 25 years and has been a member of the Royal Southern Yacht Club since his very earliest sailing days in Optimist dinghies.

His roll call of racing achievements include Oppie Championship wins to back-to-back Rolex Fastnet wins in 2009 and 2011 aboard Ran, together with class wins in the Sydney Hobart and Middle Sea races.

Lifeboat station to close THE RNLI has announced the closure of South Broads lifeboat station in Suffolk.

A Coast Review concluded that public safety on The Broads would be better served by relocating the station’s assets elsewhere and improving the ability of nearby Great Yarmouth and Gorleston lifeboat station to respond to incidents in the area.

volunteers, who operate one D class lifeboat, an XP boat, and a 4x4 vehicle.

Both the D class lifeboat and XP boat will continue to serve in the RNLI’s relief fleet.

RNLI East Divisional Inspector Andrew Ashton said: “On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to thank the volunteers at South Broads for their understanding, commitment and dedication to the lifeboat station over the years.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their support over the years.”

Since the station opened in 2001 its volunteers carried out 194 rescues and saved two lives. The majority of the call-outs were made to brokendown pleasure craft.

LUCKY ESCAPE

AN ANGleR was said to be lucky to be alive after being washed off rocks near Porthleven, Cornwall, and spending nearly an hour struggling to stay afloat in rough seas. In pitch darkness the 53-yearold fisherman, who was not wearing a lifejacket, was winched out of the water by a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose after he was spotted by a passer-by. Falmouth Coastguard watch manager Andy Condy said: “We recommend anglers wear lifejackets when fishing in rough water particularly at night.” the man was taken to hospital and later allowed home.

Award for two MOB rescuers THIS year’s 80th Anniversary J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race had the highest level of nominations for the Nautica Outstanding Seamanship Award.

The race hosted and run by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, Isle of Wight was the largest ever with 1,908 yachts entered and was staged in challenging weather conditions that lead to an unusually high number of incidents on the water.

The Nautica award recognises acts of good seamanship on race day and is open to all those involved, whether competitors, spectators, members of the emergency services or race officers.

Among the many worthy nominations following the June 25 Race, were two strong nominations for skippers coming to the rescue of two separate ‘Man Overboard’ incidents, both in big seas.

The joint winners who each received a Nautica watch were Michael Hook, skipper on the Britannia Events chartered Flying Fish, GBR 9043T, for rescuing a man overboard from a Laser SB3, and Paul Harris, owner and skipper of Tan-It, a Sydney 36, for rescuing a man overboard from Jings!, a J133.

Events, said the winners were selected because successful MOB recoveries in such unforgiving circumstances have to be exercised with a great deal of skill and without a moment’s hesitation or regard for the rescuer’s race results.

The race will be held on Saturday 30 June with a first class start time of 0700.

A tWO-year-old labrador named Mango has become the world’s first surfing dog. Videos of her riding the waves at Newquay, Cornwall, have had over a million hits on You tube.

Mango’s owner Matt Slater, curator of Newquay’s Blue Reef aquarium, said: “She has her own boogie board and really enjoys surfing with the family. It was her idea to try it out. She is absolutely fearless and now has really excellent board skills.

“It’s a great way to exercise Mango – it beats boring walks any day.”

NEWS IN BRIEF KITESURFER RESCUED

A KITESURFER was brought to safety by Bridlington lifeboat crew after he spent almost an hour in the sea. The man was being kept afloat by two windsurfers off the coast at Fraisthorpe near in offshore winds. He was checked over by a paramedic and handed into the care of the Coastguard.

FORCE 6 SWIM

Dismasted and drifting on to Bramble bank

CALSHOT all-weather lifeboat crew were called to a dismasted yacht drifting towards the Bramble Bank in near gale force winds.

The yacht, a 40-foot cruiser/racer with seven adults on board, had broken

its mast in two places. The crew were unable to use the boat’s engine as the broken rigging was hanging off the deck close to the propeller.

After being alerted by Solent Coastguard on 27 November, the Calshot

lifeboat crew headed to the scene.

In the gusting west by north wind and with the amount of damaged rigging around the yacht, getting alongside the yacht and placing crew members aboard was a challenging task for the lifeboat.

But volunteers were eventually able to climb on board after placing the vessels bow to bow, reducing the risk of fouling the lifeboat propellers or rudder.

Once aboard the damaged yacht, lifeboat crew members managed to secure all the loose rigging and make the boat safe enough to take a tow. They also checked the vessel for any further damage and found that it was taking on water.

The lifeboat coxswain decided that the yacht needed to be taken to the nearest safe harbour. The yacht was pulled to the Trinity pontoon at Cowes.

QUEENSFERRY lifeboat responded to a six metre RIB that had suffered engine failure and, in powerful force 6 winds, was swept on to the tyre barrier at Port Edgar.

Lifeboat crew member Andrew Ventham swam to the stricken vessel to get a line aboard. The lifeboat towed the RIB safely back to her berth at Port Edgar Marina.

LONG NIGHT

SENNE Cove lifeboat crew were alerted after a Newlyn crabber suffered gearbox failure 15 miles north north west of Land’s End. They towed the vessel towards Newlyn, arriving after six hours.

The tide prevented lifeboat recovery so it stayed in Newlyn and made it back to Sennen Cove after another four hours.

THE good news is that there is a market out there. Waterfront property is selling.

True, volumes are down. In fact niche market agents report a 50 per cent drop in volumes in the four years since the market peak in 2007 and financial crisis of 2008.

Others who want to sell but who do not want to follow the signals for market pricing may instruct agents to market their property at unachievable levels.

They will sit there and eventually begin to look tired to a buying market savvy in its expectation of not having to pay more than it has to.

I have noticed on my travels to inland marinas that some of them look as though they have been astro turfed around the boats as the weed is so thick.

This in part is due to high nitrogen build up in the water and this can be attributed to all the grey water being discharged with nitrates in it from washing up liquid and other cleaning products.

It was good to see a number of cleaning products for boaters which had been designed specifically to reduce the impact on the environment whilst still achieving the same results.

Obviously cleaning a 100-metre super yacht requires a lot of product (as well as a lot of elbow grease) and so there is pressure to ensure that this doesn’t cause any adverse effects on the local area. Hopefully more of these

environmentally sensitive cleaners and products will end up on the UK market.

A German company (EFOY) was showing off some super-efficient fuel cells which utilises methanol to extract hydrogen making it easier and safer to transport and store than the hydrogen cells that are on the market.

It was noticeable that there were a high number of hybrid (electric) engines being developed as well as hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

This was very useful as I was attending the show with two members of the Royal Thames Yacht Club who were launching and drumming up entrants for their hybrid propulsion award; The Mansura Trophy.

The competition already attracts entrants from boat builders and engine manufacturers at the cutting edge of hybrid technology from all over the world. I particularly like the look of a new J Class Yacht being built by the Dykstra

EARLIER this year I attended the world’s largest Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam.

METS is a truly colossal exhibition, dwarfing the likes of the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show.

There were 1,250 exhibitors of which 150 featured in the Super Yacht Pavilion.

You could buy anything for a boat ranging from helicopter pads, Jacuzzis or simply a cleat.

Miles were walked in search of the elusive prize of a product that you were actually interested in. Between the hundreds of carbon fibre gadgets I found a few gems.

OK, so it took more than one strike of my mighty sword before I popped my cork but the assembled guests seemed no less impressed.

steps of the imposing 19th century Chateau Mumm, I was partaking in an initiation ceremony into the esteemed Cordon Rouge club, an elite band of modern-day explorers and adventurers run by champagne Mumm’s delightfully charming Charlie Bell.

I have been given the privilege of entering a world of living legends; the likes of Sir Ranulph Feinnes, Ewen McGregor, David Hempleman-Adams, our very own Sir Robin Knox-Johnston,

Dame Ellen MacArthur, Dee Caffari, Mike Golding, Brian Thompson, not to mention Ben Fogle, Chris Bonnington, et al.

As part of the initiation treat, we were afforded 48 hours of the finest firstclass hospitality in Reims, the heart of Champagne country in France.

After a journey from London to Paris

by Eurostar and a car ride to Reims, we arrived at the Grand Cru of champagne chateaux, GH Mumm et Cie. Evening dinner, cooked by their very own chef was in the chateau itself, eating a champagne-paired menu.

Acknowledging my philistine roots, I had no idea how good the right wine can taste when matched with the right food. If you are looking for Holt’s top-tip I can thoroughly recommend the Mumm Blancs-de-Blancs with seared scallops.

The following day, we were given a tour of the extensive Mumm cellars, a staggering 25 kilometers of penicillinmould covered tunnels carved out of the chalk some 50-feet beneath the surface of the chateau housing a thirst-inducing eight million bottles of champagne.

Amazon explorer Ed Stafford and I made the mistake of drinking, instead of “tasting”, our six different glasses of champagne at the tasting session and were summarily ticked-off for giggling like naughty schoolboys which, of course, only made us worse.

I HAD the pleasure of being asked to be one of the judges for this year’s 2011 National Historic Ships photographic competition which was announced in November.

I know what I like in a picture but that does not mean others will agree.

Like any art form, photography is by nature, subjective and will mean different things to different people.

To be honest, I hadn’t fully understood the depth of appreciation that is required to choose a winning picture, made all the more difficult when confronted by so many, equally worthy, equally impressive images from “snapper’s” of all ages.

Composition, light, innovation, creativity and technical aptitude being just some of the criteria by which we had to judge.

Having whittled the entries down to a few dozen, six other judges and I combined our scores to determine the winner.

Aboard one of the UK’s foremost historic ships, HMS Belfast, on a bitterly cold, crisp, clear autumnal day on the River Thames, the overall winner was announced as Mike Garlick with his excellent entry, Maybird.

Congratulations to Mike and all the other entrants whose photographs captured a cross-section of Britain’s national historic ships and many of the traditional skills and the passionate owners that keep them afloat.

It is a truly magical setting and, with a few more flutes of their finest vintage champagne accompanying yet more

delicious food, it was a great end to a magnificent mini-adventure.

The Chinese chicken curry we had when we got back home that evening seemed very ordinary indeed and, I can confirm, it does not pair well with a vintage 2000 champagne.

I knew I should have paid more attention at the wine tasting session.

TAKING place from 6 to 15 January 2012, more than 1,000 boats and nearly 500 exhibitors will gather at ExCeL London, and the doors of this show extravaganza will be thrown open to the public. So, whether you like your boats under sail, power or even paddle, there’s guaranteed to be something to whet your appetite for the season ahead. With interactive features dotted all around the show, entertainment is the order of the day. And there’s great news for anyone with little ones in tow, as kids go free this year, making this the perfect family day out.

GOING FOR GOLD

Get your first taste of 2012 Olympic fever in the North Hall, where a fleet of Olympic class boats will be on display in Skandia Team GBR’s Going for Gold feature. These are the same classes that our Olympic hopefuls will sail in their quest for gold come August, and will include the Finn, as sailed by triple Olympic medallist, Ben Ainslie Britain’s most successful Olympic sailor ever.

Another highlight will be the Star, the class in which the successful pairing of Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson compete.

This feature is also a great starting point for anyone wanting to get the inside track on watching the big event itself, with representatives from Weymouth & Portland on hand to answer any questions you may have about the venue for the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

THE WATERSPORTS ACTION POOL

What better way to get a taste for watersports than to get afloat and give it a go yourself? At this year’s show, visitors can once again do just that, with stand up paddleboarding (SUP), wakeboarding, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing and kayaking taster sessions all on offer.

So, if you don’t mind getting wet, give it a go! There will be four public sessions per day, and experts from Neilson Active Holidays and Rockley Watersports will be on hand to give you some tips.

If you’d rather soak up the action than get soaked, the poolside arena is a great place to kick back and watch. With live demos and professional championships scheduled through the week, such as the European All-stars Canoe Polo Challenge, there will be plenty of action to keep you entertained.

THE KNOWLEDGE BOX

Brush up on your nautical knowhow with a range of informative and interactive talks from those at the top of their game. Whatever your boating background, there’ll be something to inspire, from technology and innovations to yacht cruising and dinghy racing.

STARS OF POWER AND SAIL

Located in the South Hall, Sunseeker International’s stand will be one of the stars of the show, featuring the brand new glitzy-glam 28M. At the opposite end of the hall will be the Princess stand, with the striking Princess 32 gracing its impressive yacht range.

Fairline, Sealine, Bates Wharf and Rodman will also be located in the South Hall, along with Ventura, which will launch the newest addition to the ultraglamorous Riva family, the Riva Iseo, a super stylish Riviera dayboat.

Yamaha will again be building its extensive ‘marina’ with a number of different brands and EP Barrus will also be showcasing a full range of brands including Quicksilver, AB RIBs, Yanmar and Mariner.

Highlights of the sailing yachts on display will be Moody, Grand Soleil, J Boat, Oyster and Northshore - just some of exhibits you can check out, either in

the South Hall or on the Boardwalk.

THE CLASSIC BOAT ATTRACTION Slip back in time on the Classic Boat stand and climb an authentic mast from the 18th century sailing warship HMS Victory - Nelson’s flagship vessel that took part in the battle of Trafalgar.

Children and adults alike can ‘scale the rigging’ and unfurl the sails; then immerse yourself in tales of the high seas and discover the vessels of old, with demonstrations from traditional craftsmen and a selection of restored boats to admire.

THE USED BOAT MARINA

Visitors searching for a second-hand boat need look no further than the show’s special marina area, located alongside the main exhibition hall. Here you will find boats of all sizes, both sail and power, conveniently moored for you to step onboard and peruse at leisure.

Strong winds front and back in Straits BACK from delivering a boat to Malta which took part in the Rolex Middle Sea Race round Sicily, we were delayed by strong winds in the Straits of Gibraltar but made it to our destination with two days to spare.

I have tried unsuccessfully to find a reference to Nelson’s writings on the vagaries of the Levanter – the east wind, from the Levant - and the Poniente west wind - in the Straits of Gibraltar, believing he had written that it was pointless to sail against either and he was sailing square riggers.

We arrived at night off the Straits to be greeted with 30 – 35 knots of Levanter, with a forestay which had decided to part not a few miles back, and we were making such poor progress that we diverted into Barbate.

I was last there in 1989 and it is much changed for the better with an excellent marina containing showers, fuel pontoon and a restaurant. The pontoons are well protected from the winds with little

swell affecting the moored boats.

The Dufour 45 we were delivering has an enormous cockpit, it must be a good 15 feet from companionway to transom.

Fortunately the boat was fitted with plenty of padeyes to secure our lifejacket strops so we could be well hitched on in a heavy sea.

MY RULES FOR CLIPPING ON ARE:

Non-swimmers.

When the second reef goes in.

■ If a crew member feels seasick, and when he is sick if it comes on quickly.

■ When a crew member feels uncomfortable.

■ When I feel uncomfortable about a crew member.

■ In a really lumpy sea.

■ In fog.

■ At night, when leaving the cockpit to go forward, and always if sea conditions warrant it.

We had 12 strops on this boat, because

it normally races with 12 crew, and this made life a lot easier. I rigged up strops on to the cockpit padeyes and the backstay and when the sea became a bit bouncy crew would clip on before coming up the companionway, get themselves comfortable in the cockpit and transfer a new strop to their lifejacket before moving further aft.

The photo gives you an idea of the set up. If going forward at sea we had, of course, jackstays to attach ourselves to.

If these are made of webbing material, they should be stowed away when not in use, as they can suffer from UV degradation.

Most are made of webbing, but occasionally you see wire stays, which though not susceptible to UV, can cause a foot to turn on the wire; all the more reason for having a hand for yourself and a hand for whatever you may be doing.

I insist that crew clip on before coming up the companionway when we have a really lumpy sea, so that they are hooked

on before getting into the cockpit.

I remember, many years ago, whilst sailing a Nicholson 55, a crew member failed to clip on in a rough sea and he had been catapulted some eight feet towards the stern. Luckily for him he had landed up against another member of the crew who saved him from hitting the compass pedestal with an almighty wallop!

There was a very detailed weather forecast system in the Barbate marina and this showed that on the Monday that the wind was likely to drop, so we set off for the Straits but only to face near gale force winds once down close to Tarifa.

As an old salt in the bar at the club house who had lived in Barbate for 25 years had suggested, the problem is that you may have f3 or f4 in Barbate, 35 miles away from the narrowest part of the Straits but the venturi effect of the land increases the wind strength exponentially, giving much stronger winds further south.

UP to 9 J class yachts will be racing round the Isle of Wight on 21 July 2012 in a re-enactment of the 100 Guinea cup raced in 1851.

A huge number of RYA inspectors operate both at home and abroad ensuring standards do not waiver or vary across the world, and once a centre has received the RYA Tick Mark it is subject to annual inspections to make sure those standards are being delivered year-on-year.

So where do you start? Well, there are no hard and fast rules according to Craig simply some sensible points of advice.

Getting engaged with the media – online and print – for the area you are especially interested in is your best bet, he recommends. So for example, seasonal superyacht work is advertised on Dockwalk, while you are likely to find appropriate dinghy jobs advertised in something like Yachts and Yachting magazine.

If you hold an RYA qualification and are looking to work with an overseas centre or holiday/charter company, finding one that is RYA recognised is a guaranteed way to know that company is reputable

the RYA, and he has some useful words of advice regards those opportunities too.

“Just because a centre/company isn’t RYA recognised doesn’t mean it is high risk but it is always worth doing your research and looking around some of the online forums to see where seems good, reputable places to work and people to work for. If it is possible try to speak to someone who has worked for that company recently.

“If you want to join a delivery as crew for example, find out who the skipper is, how long they have been delivering boats, do they have insurance, does the boat have all the necessary safety equipment etc.

“It is all pretty common sense stuff, but possibly the sorts of things that may get overlooked in the excitement of the prospect of getting away.”

Whitehaven Marina WHITEHAVEN, CUMBRIA

HISTORIC WHITEHAVEN Nestled behind the rugged hills of the Lake District and defying the wild Irish Sea, the port of Whitehaven has always proven to be a popular haven for any sailor transiting the Irish Sea. So much so that for a short period the port was the second busiest in the UK, trailing only Liverpool in terms of volume of traffic with collier brigs jostling with slave ships on the packed quay.

The success of the port brought unwelcome visitors, and it was actually the site of the last invasion of the UK: In 1778 a disillusioned former resident, John Paul Jones, returned to the port in command of the US privateer Bonhomme Richard and proceeded to land an invading party. Happily, instead of looting and pillaging, the party headed straight to the pub and were chased off before they got down to business.

With plenty to entice the visiting yachtsman, welcoming Whitehaven has been rejuvenated by the development of a magnificent marina with a sea lock, which can accommodate 288 vessels of up to 40m in length with a 5m draft.

Given that the redevelopment of the town and waterfront has been fuelled by £20m worth of grants since 1990, the marina has all the luxuries you expect of a modern marina. This includes the recently opened state of the art boatyard, boasting full heating and 7,000 sq ft under cover area.

Berth-holders are attracted to Whitehaven by its location, being within easy reach of the west coast of Scotland, North Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as the reasonable prices and a full range of facilities. Live-aboards are warmly received.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love the fact that the Lake District, one of the country’s most beautiful national parks, is on the doorstep, perfect for walking, cycling and climbing.

Whitehaven itself is a town with a rich history and is inextricably linked with the coal mining industry. In fact, it’s surrounded by some of the deepest mineshafts in the world, a number of which run out deep beneath the seabed.

In addition to this, the town has some fairly unsavoury links with the slave trade. But the sense of history and exotic trading links of the past continue to give rise to a local community feel and friendly atmosphere, where the locals are always willing to help.

ENTERING WHITEHAVEN

WPT 54°33’18N 03°36’ 21W The wide entrance to the outer harbour and distinctive white towers of the North Quay and West Quay on either side mean that the approach to Whitehaven day or night is relatively straightforward and entry is safe in most conditions. However, if you are waiting for the tide to get through the lock, then hanging around outside can get uncomfortable in onshore conditions.

The good news is there are no off lying hazards, and the lock is manned 24 hours a day. The approach channel is dredged to 1m above chart datum, with the sill at chart datum and 7m of depth within the lock and marina.

The somewhat savage Cumberland coast can, at first glance, seem like an unlikely cruising ground. Although shelter is in short supply along the coast, this is more than compensated for by the fact that you have ready access to the cruising grounds of the West Coast of Scotland, Northern Ireland and North Wales meanwhile, the Isle of Man, situated some 30 miles away provides the ideal stopover point.

Other tempting stopovers within reach include Kircudbright across the Solway Firth in Scotland; Fleetwood and Liverpool to the south; and, closer to home, Maryport marina or the more adventurous destination of Ravenglass – although the latter should only be approached with local knowledge and extreme care.

FACILITIES Whitehaven offers fuel on site. There is plenty of car parking, water and electricity on pontoons, a launderette, showers and storage ashore. WiFi is also available to berth holders. Meanwhile, the adjoining shed offers new facilities, including 7,000ft2 boat shed with Storage for vessels up to 21m LOA. There is also a 5 tonne boat hoist. Under floor heating makes ideal conditions for fibreglassing. An open yard policy allows contractors to work on site.

Paul and Jill Manning live aboard their Moody 29 Alpagro at Whitehaven and enjoy exploring by sea and land. Jill says; “We spend about 80 per cent of our time living aboard, so where we keep her is very important and Whitehaven is in easy reach of many destinations.” Paul adds; “We have a motorbike and also love to camp, so we literally head for the hills, or Keswick, the heart of the north Lakes.”

Whitehaven itself has a very rich history to entice the visitor. Invasion and slavery through to the mining and trading history of the area are all well documented at the Haig Pit museum and the Rum Story museum on Lowther Street.

Whitehaven also boasts one of the finest antiquarian book stores in the country: You can easily lose a day browsing through Michael Moon’s book store on Lowther Street.

Moving away from the town, the hills of the Lake District are about a 20 minute drive away and offer spectacular scenery and brisk walking. The western Lake District is also much less crowded with tourists, and lakes such as Ennerdale and Crummock offer excellent walking well away from the crowds that blight the Lakeland towns of Keswick and Ambleside. For the keen cyclist, the coast to coast route starts at Whitehaven and takes you across to Tynemouth.

Don’t miss some spectacular walks along the coastline around Whitehaven, with the walk towards St Bees Head a favourite. No matter what time of year, you can be rewarded with some beautiful sunsets on this coastline. Looking out across the wild Irish Sea, the views are simply stunning, with Scotland to the north, Ireland and the Isle of Man to the west, and St Bees Head to the south.

IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE? NO, ITS WORLD POWERBOAT SPEED RECORD HOLDER BEN JELF IT HAS been a very busy and successful year for 11year-old Ben Jelf from Maidstone, Kent.

Not only is he Britain’s youngest ever World and European Powerboat Racing Champion, but back in November he became Britain’s youngest World Powerboat Speed Record holder.

At the 41st annual Coniston Powerboat

Records Week in Cumbria, Ben set a new GT15 World and British speed record at 43.11mph, as well as a new British record for the S250 Class at 31.92mph.

We met up with this powerboat racing whiz kid to find out more about his sport, his boats, his kit and much more . . .

 How long have you been powerboat racing?

I started training in 2008 six months before my ninth birthday but I was not allowed to race with other boats until I was nine years old.

 Why did you start racing?

I started racing because my granddad, dad and uncle have raced powerboats and I have been going to races as long as I can remember. It seemed like ages before I was allowed to have a go myself.

 Of all your races and titles which was the biggest toughest to get?

The toughest one was the World Speed Record. Racing is a bit easier as no matter what the result is it’s all over when the chequered flag comes out. With the speed record it was very frustrating trying your best every time and not always getting the speed you need.

 So, is powerboat racing difficult?

Yes. But with proper training you can overcome the difficult parts. Learning to read the water as its surface is always changing is something that comes with experience and it takes the longest time to learn. My Mum says that ‘every race is an education no matter how long you have been racing for - If you think you have nothing to learn you shouldn’t be racing’ and I think she is right.

 What skills do you need?

You need to have skill, determination, bravery, trust and to be able to keep calm when under pressure.

 What do you love most about powerboat racing?

I love the speed and the thrill you get when you are racing.

 What are your goals for 2012?

I am hoping to retain all of the titles in 2012, but it’s not easy. There are lots of really good racers in the UK and the

rest of the world who are all more than capable of winning as well. Hopefully I will have luck on my side.

 Does it interfere with your school work?

No. I have a mountain of work from my school if I have to have time away. During records week I was doing my maths homework in-between each attempt. My school fully supports my racing but they make sure that I do not fall behind with my work.

 What preparations do you make before going out on the water?

Everything from the engine mounting to the steering etc. has to be checked before the boat is allowed to go out. I am lucky to have a really good team behind me that work very hard but I am learning that it is still my responsibility to make sure everything is okay.

 For youngsters out there thinking about getting into powerboat racing what would you tell them?

I would tell them to go for it! Powerboat racing is fun, competitive and safe. It’s

scary to start with, but by the time the training is finished you will have forgotten why you were worried. Anyone, from any background, can do it.

 Do you want to be a professional powerboat racer when you get older?

That would be a big dream of mine, I don’t think there are many chances to become a full-time driver but you never know; I might get lucky.

 So, who is better behind the wheel, you or your dad?

For now I would have to say my Dad. Not only is he one of the best drivers ever, he knows everything there is to know about powerboat racing and spends a lot of time trying to teach me.

 On a scale of one to ten, how much fun do you have racing?

Ten wouldn’t be enough - it would have to be 100! I always have a fantastic time at the races.

AS we head for autumn’s shorter days and longer evenings All at Sea focuses on books about boating as reading about our favourite pastime becomes almost as much fun as getting on the water.

HIDDEN HARBOURS OF WALES THIS latest offering from prolific writer of nautical books and boating magazine regular Dag Pike covers the smaller harbours and inlets of Wales, particularly north Wales. The book is a celebration of a hugely diverse selection of possible landfalls, though you are advised against getting too excited about visiting them all unless you own a shoal draft cruiser and a pair of chest waders. It goes into all the necessary detail for people who, when standing on an expensively constructed stone harbour wall in the middle of nowhere, ask why it is there and who built it. It is a bit of a shame that the author and/or publisher have taken the view at a very early stage that nobody in their right mind will actually try to get into any of these places by boat. Where are the chartlets, Imray? What we get instead is a small paragraph per location titled ‘Water Access’ with no indication on actual depths above or below chart datum. Phrases like ‘access is only about two hours either side of high water’ beg the question, ‘In what? A 45-foot fin keeler or a Wayfarer with the board up?’

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink

A selection strategy for Christmas cheer OH DEAR! The boat is laid up, the weather has gone haywire, the financial climate is threatening. We need some serious ‘cheer up’ for the festive season but also a strategy to keep the spending in check.

It’s an observed truism that the better the wine (more expensive) and the more distinctive the flavour (full bodied, identifiably fruity) the more it becomes self-regulating as a ‘sipper’ rather than a ‘quaffer’.

Less volume is consumed for the same pleasurable outcome. It’s the same for stronger beers.

So this can be the basis for a seasonal strategy sippers rather than quaffers, stronger versions of regular standards, some premium mixers, marginal upgrade in wines, modest price premiums offset by the need for fewer bottles.

Here are some ideas drawn from the last 12 months of All at Sea. Fizz: Italian Prosecco. (Nov ’11). Light and gently fizzy, an excellent versatile white wine for pre-drinks and meal starters. Think of it as a premium white wine, not a cheap alternative to Champagnes. Chardonnays in my local supermarkets are £8 to £12; Prosecco £8.25 to £12 right on strategy.

Red wine: Merlot de Veneto (July), about £6 a bottle, or the fuller flavoured Hardy’s Australian ‘Crest’ about £7.80. A modest premium on strategy versus the Veneto but if you usually buy at under £5 a bottle, Hardy’s Stamp of Australia at £5.60 a bottle would be on strategy too.

White wine: Vinho Verde from Portugal (May), the best ‘treat’ wine featured this year. £7.29 in my local

shop, so on strategy versus Chardonnay benchmarks. Fresh, a delicate touch of petillance on the tongue, a ‘sipper’ perfect with festive salmon.

Gin and premium tonic: stick to your usual gin but treat yourself to a premium tonic such as Fever Tree. This tonic features real quinine and its own added botanicals, distinctly enhancing the G & T flavour.

Premium price £1.35 in 500ml bottle to preserve freshness, just about on strategy for a really tasty treat. .

Best gin choice would be to buy the premium gin to go with the Fever Tree tonic. Adnams Copper House Distillery First Rate gin (Oct) is a strong 48 oer cent abv and, in a lovely spinnaker-adorned box, makes a great present. There is a cute 50cl size at £25 a bottle, but actually £ per volume the 70cl bottle at £30 is a 16 per centbetter buy. Spend a wee bit more on flavour and strength, drink a wee bit less and your budget could easily flat- line, compared with last year.
