A new record time for sailing around the world has been set by British sailor Brian Thompson onboard the maxi trimaran, Banque Populaire V, as the yacht crossed the Jules Verne Trophy finish line on Friday evening after circumnavigating the globe in just 45 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes and 53 seconds. LEG 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race saw a close battle, as Franck Cammas’ men on Groupama edged past Telefónica with just over 10 nautical miles to go to the Abu Dhabi finish line, claiming victory in the 98-nautical mile sprint from the northern United Arab Emirates by just 52 seconds to take a maximum six points.

As a safety measure to deter piracy, race organisers split the second leg into two stages. After racing to the safe haven port, the boats were loaded onto a ship and transported through the worst affected waters to the northern United Arab Emirates.

They were then unloaded with racing resuming with a 98 nautical mile sprint into Abu Dhabi, the first time the race has visited the Middle East in its 38-year history.

Skippered by Spanish Olympic gold medallist Iker Martínez, Telefónica led the second stage of Leg 2 from the northern United Arab Emirates to Abu Dhabi from the start, but were unable to hold off the attack from Groupama.

Within 20 miles of the finish, Cammas’ men drew neck and neck with Telefónica as the pair battled it out in choppy seas and winds of 15 to 25 knots. A sloppy

rounding of the final turning mark gave Groupama their opportunity to pounce – and they did, snatching the lead with just over 10 nautical miles to go and ending Telefónica’s winning streak of three consecutive victories.

While Telefónica were left licking their wounds at their narrow defeat, they can take some comfort in extending their lead overall to eight points, with 66 points to CAMPER’s 58.

The fleet will return to action on 13 January with the Etihad Airways In-Port Race with Leg 3, from Abu Dhabi to Sanya, starting on 14 January.

The Banque Populaire V crew beat the previous record set by Groupama 3 which stood at 48 days 7 hours 44 minutes and 52 seconds.

British sailor, Brian Thompson, is not only part of the crew that has just smashed the world speed record for a lap of the planet, but has simultaneously become the first Briton to circumnavigate the globe non-stop for a fourth time.

A triumphant Thompson said: “This has been an incredible trip around the planet, almost a dream ride. And that is because of the quality of the boat, of the preparation and most of all to the incredible crew on board.”

HONORARY President of the National Coastwatch Institution, Jon Gifford, has been duly recognised in the New Year’s Honours with the award of the Order of the British Empire. The award gives recognition to the enormous contribution Jon has made towards the development of the NCI over the last 12 years.

He has taken on various roles as volunteer watchkeeper, Trustee and Chairman, and under his leadership the charity has grown from some 700 to 2000 volunteers.

THE National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is currently displaying a genuine Jolly Roger Pirate Flag dated from c. 1790, on loan with the kind permission of Mrs Pamela Curry. Six years after their lives were thrown into turmoil by the London Bombings Nick Beck and Melisa Collett, who quit their city jobs following the loss of a close friend and colleague to pursue a passion for sailing, returned to the

capital with the ITV film crew. The programme will document how they left their London lives behind to commission a replica 44ft Scillonian Pilot Cutter, which is now based in Poole and has become the couple’s new charter business.

The programme stars Masterchef

finalist Dick Strawbridge and his son James, who spent 60 days filming with the boat’s crew. Their journey began in Cornwall and passed along the south coast of Britain to the City of London.

Local food producers were visited along the way and the chefs cooked up local delicacies in the galley.

RNLI FILM

THE RNLI has marked the 30th anniversary of two memorable rescues made in hurricane conditions with a special 15 minute film, which demonstrates the courage of the RNLI’s volunteers and the fine balance between rescue and tragedy. In December 1981, St Peter Port’s volunteer crew bravely rescued 29 people from the Bonita; on the same day, the Penlee lifeboat went to the aid of the 300 ton coaster Union Star. The lifeboat was lost and there were no survivors, making it the worst disaster in recent RNLI history.

New skiff tested Testing of the production-spec RS900, RS Sailing’s contender for selection as the future women’s Olympic skiff class, is underway.

The RS900 has been designed by the RS team of Alex Southon and Nick Peters together with Phil Morrison. It is designed not only with possible selection as a future Olympic class in mind, but also as a design that will stand the test of time and introduce skiff sailing to a new generation.

RS managing director, Martin Wadhams,

said: “We began the process several years ago believing that the RS800 could be modified to become the women’s skiff, but quickly realised that although it was arguably the most suited of the then current contenders, it would never be perfect for Olympic women.”

The RS900 hull is shorter, narrower and has lower freeboard to suit light female teams of 110-130kg combined weight.

The reduced hull surface area allows a corresponding weight reduction whilst fully integrated wide, solid wings and a

Build efficiency means that the RS900’s price tag will in line with a competitive 470 rather than the similarly high performance 49er.

Final testing of RS900 will continue over the coming months in the run up to ISAF’s evaluation trials, which are expected to be held in March.

The Italian team, Luna Rossa, won the final Act of 2011 in emphatic style and have been crowned the Overall Champions of the Extreme Sailing Series™ 2011.

Max Sirena, Paul Campbell-James, Alister Richardson and Manuel Modena, who have raced together on the Extreme 40 all season, hardly put a foot wrong over the 35 races of the final Act in Singapore.

They went into the final day with a previously unheard of 56-point lead over their arch rivals for the 2011 title, the French team of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild. There was little Pierre Pennec’s team could do as Luna Rossa put in another strong performance and after 10 races , Luna Rossa topped the Act 9 leaderboard with a 45-point margin over second-placed The Wave, Muscat.

Despite six different Act winners during the year, coming into the final Act, only the French and Italian teams could win the overall title. After 11 months, 9 venues and 301 races, Luna Rossa finally got to lift the Extreme Sailing Series trophy.

After the habitual visit to the UK in August, the circuit will return to the Sicilian port of Trapani for the third consecutive year. The iconic city of Nice will be the final stop in Europe before the 2012 finale to be staged in Brazil for the very first time.

OVERWATER Marina, near Audlem, Cheshire, has achieved the maximum five Gold Anchors in the prestigious Gold Anchor Award Scheme. A spokesperson for the Yacht Harbour Association said that this is a very commendable achievement for a marina in operation for only 18 months and moreover it is the first marina in the British Waterways network to achieve Five Gold Anchors.

A 37ft yacht drifting in off Cowes Harbour was towed to safety by Cowes RNlI lifeboat. the crew of the yacht, Poohstix, was becalmed en route from Gosport to Beaulieu River, and had been unable to start the engine.

Get ready for Youth Nationals Fire AFTER a successful 2011 for Britain’s youth sailors, entries for the 2012 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships, the premier event on the RYA Youth Racing calendar, are now open.

The 2012 regatta will be staged at Pwllheli Sailing Club (North Wales) from 31 March - 6 April and look set to attract the top Youth racers from around the country vying for top level competition, including those looking to earn selection to the RYA Volvo National Youth Squads.

As the world’s media and sporting enthusiasts prepare to descend on Dorset for the 2012 Games, businesses are highlighting the benefits of travelling by sea not road.

Five star face lift for Ocean Village MDL Marinas has teamed up with Harbour Hotels to propose plans for a superyacht-inspired £25 million luxury hotel at Ocean Village Marina in Southampton.

The 4/5 star hotel will include 70 bedrooms, spa, gym and swimming pool, along with a luxurious restaurant and champagne roof terrace. The ground floor is proposed to include a large open plan lounge, restaurant and bar which will extend out onto a terrace at the end of the existing

promontory.

Set to be a welcome addition to the city, the hotel will have a number of flexible function rooms and is set to be a popular attraction during Southampton Boat Show, offering additional restaurants and luxurious facilities in a beautiful waterfront setting.

Biscay 2012 Offshore race opens

EnTriES are now open for the royal Southern Yacht Club’s inaugural Biscay 2012 Offshore race taking place from 16 - 29 September 2012.

The race is divided into three legs, over 950 nautical miles, from the Solent, UK to La rochelle, France, onwards to Brest, France and back to the Solent with stopovers in La rochelle and Brest.

Created as a legacy to members from the royal Southern in its 175th Anniversary year and to be run as a biennial event, the race looks set to be a truly international event; expressions of interest have already been received from some 20 entries including crews from several overseas yacht clubs.

Great expectations in Olympic year IT IS HERE - 2012 and the scene is set for the biggest sporting extravaganza the nation has seen.

What’s more, the sport or pastime that excites us most will be centre stage in terms of expectation of London 2012, despite the fact that Weymouth and Portland is 150 miles away from the main Olympic Village.

Nothing unusual in that, sailing, and indeed other boating bits of the Olympics are frequently a tad off piste, especially for those for whom the games are a four year excuse to get knowledgeable about sports that only rarely attract crowds vocal enough to raise the roof.

Despite the fuss, most of the sports are of minority interest in themselves.

Sailing certainly is. Tennis and soccer in the Olympic format are hardly mainstream. Even athletics causes little more than a murmur unless household names are chasing historic records.

Yet here we are winding up to a

huge and expensive party and looking for a legacy on top.

Forgive me if I am shattering dreams for those who have sweated on tickets in the hugely complicated and equally disappointing booking system. Long ago, I proudly had a gold medal won my by girlfriend’s father around my neck for a few minutes.

I remained a passionate supporter of the Olympic dream and worked hard to raise cash to help finance the British team until Prime Minister John Major gave us the Lottery and in effect made all elite sports people professional.

I certainly don’t want to sound like Scrooge about the coming festivities but I do want to add a note of caution.

The Olympics are about many other things in addition to sport – politics, big business and national pride to name but a few.

I have nothing but admiration for Team GBR in all of the sports whether the stars are rich and famous or

relatively poor, part-timers.

No matter what their achievements in non Olympic years or in the months running up to July they are super humans compared to the rest of us and have that incredible spirit that enables them to reach for the sky wrapped in national flags to collect glittering medals to which only a select few can ever aspire.

And that spirit also includes the ability to risk investing four years in painful, utterly focussed campaigns that for all but three people or three teams in each event end in devastating disappointment.

I am delighted that the UK is hosting the games again. We are superb at big events. We are a nation that relishes challenge, can wave flags with particular verve and, at least until recent years, had a reputation for living with emotional peaks and troughs.

And that is where my concern lies.

The GBR sailing team has built a

formidable Olympic reputation. It is the one to beat. The expectation is all the greater because this year competition will be on home waters.

Most of us will watch the dramas unfold from the comfort of our living rooms courtesy of TV. Let’s leave the doors and window open so our cheers of support and cries of delight when they win can be heard from across the nation.

But let’s also remember that medals are often decided by the narrowest of margins from equally skilled and dedicated opponents.

Of course squeal with pleasure and take pride in their victories but always be prepared to live with less than the three top places. If our sailors have to do it, so can the rest of us. They are special simply for getting to the Olympics. Despite those high expectations they are also human.

Pray for victories but plan to salute them whatever the results.

Happy Olympic year!

DATES for the 2012 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Traditional Boast Festival have been confirmed as 23-34 June. It will be the 19th year of the Festival, which takes place in Portsoy on the North-east coast of Scotland, drawing traditional wooden boats from across the UK and Europe. In previous years, crowds in excess of 16,000 have attended the community-run event celebrating the rich maritime traditions of the area.

ROWERS RESCUED

TWO Trans-Atlantic rowers were successfully rescued after a freak wave caused their boat to sink.

Briton Tom Fancett and Dutchman Tom Sauer, were nine days into the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, a 3,000 mile endurance rowing event from the Canary Islands to Barbados. Falmouth Coastguard received the distress signal after the pair activated their McMurdo EPIRB from a position 480 miles southwest of the Canary Islands. The pair spent 10 hours adrift in their tiny life raft before being rescued uninjured by a cruise ship.

BRITISH offshore sailor, Dee Caffari has been announced as the skipper of Oman Sails’ first allfemale crew competing in Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2012. The event is the first international regatta to join together the nations of the Gulf, as a regional alternative to Le Tour France a Voile.

LARGE yachts, both sail and power, are now able to dock at the end of Yarmouth Harbour pier, which is grade II listed. The deepwater harbour is renowned for its protected entrance, and has undergone more than £1.4 million worth of improvements this year, including the installation of new walk-ashore pontoons.

TITANIC REMEMBERED

THE National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, will mark the centenary of the sinking of RMS Titanic with a small exhibition and events programme. The exhibition opens on 8 March.

Woodcock, 29, from Worcestershire has been a high performance coach for the RYA for over eight years and has most recently been recognised for his dedication and commitment to the RYA’s Youth and Junior windsurfing programme.

On winning the 2011 Performance Development Coach of the Year Award, Woodcock said: “It’s absolutely amazing to have won this award and a great achievement for me as a coach. It’s incredible to get this sort of recognition for windsurfing within the wider sporting world.”

SPRING SERIES INNOVATIONS WARSASH Spring Series is now in its 29th year and the 2012 event gets underway from 18 March.

New for 2012, the Spring Series will include four IRC classes plus J/109, Sigma 38, Laser SB3 and J/80 in addition to the new J-Sprit division.

Spring Championship weekends will cater for IRC1 and IRC2 boats as well

as Farr 45, J/109, Laser SB3, J/80 and Quarter Ton classes plus triallists for the Brewin Dolphin Commodore’s Cup. Sports boats (up to 8.5m LOA and DLR 160 or less) are welcome to enter under IRC and if at least eight are entered by 9 March, then a separate sports boat class can be provided.

THE 2012 Round Britain race (RB12) will see 50 boats, 50 cars, and 50 aircraft compete simultaneously against each other in their disciplines in a unique marathon.

It is the first time such an event has taken place, and the start date is set for 21 June.

The sea element of the race is recognised by the UIM as a World Cup status event and run under the auspices of the RYA. The race itself is 10 gruelling legs over 10 days which will start and finish at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy.

Unlike its predecessors in 1969, 1984 and 2008, the 2012 RYA Powerboat race will entail a complete circumnavigation of Britain making it, without doubt, the toughest endurance powerboat race in the world. The longest leg covers 238 nautical miles from Swansea to Liverpool on day three.

Overall victory will be well rewarded, with a £35,000 prize (includes free entry worth £15,000 to the 2016 Round Britain Powered Marathon) and the prestigious Beaverbrook Round Britain Trophy being presented to the winner by Lord Beaverbrook.

Volunteers battle storm to reach yacht

Dungeness all-weather lifeboat

Volunteer lifeboat crew members from Dungeness and Dover lifeboat stations had a dramatic start to the new year when they launched to a stricken yacht in storm force conditions.

The crew were requested to launch by Dover Coastguard shortly after 5.30am on 3 January after a distress signal was sent from a sailing training vessel. Her crew

were reporting difficulties, 3 miles off Dungeness Point.

Dungeness lifeboat crew launched their Mersey class lifeboat, Pride and Spirit, and arrived to find the training boat at the mercy of the rough seas after her engines had failed.

Judith Richardson, volunteer press officer for Dungeness RNLI, said: “It

was pretty horrendous out there by all accounts. Duty coxswain, Mark Richardson, made three attempts to transfer a lifeboat crew member across to them, trying to attach a tow line, but the conditions were just too dangerous to make the transfer. It was storm force 11 at the time, so one can only imagine how it felt for those onboard.

“Our crew eventually managed to transfer a crew member across and attach a tow line, then began towing the vessel to Dover. However, because of the severity of the weather conditions, the tow line broke three times.”

At around 8am, the Dover crew launched their Severn class lifeboat, City of London II, to help with the operation.

But neither lifeboat were allowed into Dover harbour via the western entrance, as it was closed due to the weather.

Judith explained: “In conjunction with port control, crews decided it was too difficult to get into the eastern entrance and instead, decided to escort the vessel round to The Downs, nearer Ramsgate.”

In the meantime, RAF Rescue helicopter 125 was dispatched. A paramedic was winched down to airlift four crew. The remaining three crew aboard the vessel were towed into Ramsgate where a medical team was waiting.

Allen Head, Training Divisional Inspector for the RNLI in the East, said: “The volunteer crews of both Dungeness and Dover showed no fear in launching in what were horrendous conditions. Those aboard certainly had a baptism of fire, being out in such weather, but our crews did everything possible to bring them ashore safely.

“On a day when thousands of people were returning back to work and their daily routines, our crew were out doing what they do best – saving lives at sea.

Their commitment continues to impress myself and, I feel sure, the many generous supporters who help fund the RNLI.”

DoNAGhADee lifeboat crew were called to launch at 3.45pm on New Year’s Day after two divers went missing off the Copeland Islands. the all-weather lifeboat crew began to search along the north side of the island, where they were joined by Bangor inshore lifeboat and crew.

After a short search Donaghadee lifeboat found the men and pulled them from the water. Fortunately they did not require medical help and were returned to the lifeboat station at 4.35pm where they were given a warm drink.

I WONDER how many of you know there is a World Toilet Day? No! I didn’t know either until the Dorset Coast Forum e-newsletter mentioned the efforts of Keep Britain Tidy and Surfers Against Sewage to ‘Think Before you Flush’.

Amazingly there’s been a World Toilet Day every November for the last ten

years, trying to highlight the lack of hygiene facilities for more than 2.6 billion people around the world but also the billions of items flushed down the toilet every year, some of which end up on the UK’s coastline.

It’s good to see that marine litter is high on the agenda for the big event of 2012. No I’m not thinking of the Olympics

 Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth’s surface and represent 99 per cent of the living space on the planet.  Over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.  The global market value of marine and coastal resources and industries is estimated at $3 trillion per year.  The oceans contain nearly 200,000 identified species; actual numbers may be in the millions.

Here in the UK research tells us that very little of the litter entering the marine environment comes from leisure boating. Most comes from visitors to beaches and coasts, industrial fallouts, and even illegal dumping at sea, but as boaters we are probably more aware of it than most.

Not just unsightly and a health hazard, it is a danger to wildlife and a danger to us if plastic bags or discarded tackle foul the propeller or get tangled around the steering gear.

But we won’t ease off and will continue to make sure nothing ends up being thrown overboard. We value our marine environment, what it brings to the economy and how it enriches our leisure time and we don’t need another world day or green summit to remind us.

Powerful challenges for a new year WELL it only seems like yesterday we were at the Tullet Prebon London Boat Show and I was taking part in the first Knowledge Box. It’s been an extremely busy year and one which saw Dan Smith and me in Team Helvetia Wealth in the P1 SuperStock 250 class. We finished fourth

overall and had a fantastic season competing against some great racers and I conquered some big fears following my accident last year.

Although the season finished in September it’s been a very busy “off” season so far and 2012 looks set to be even busier. So I find myself back at an

action packed London Boat Show with some exciting news to share.

2012 starts off with the Official launch of the Global World Circumnavigation Record attempt.

Following meetings with Alan Priddy this time last year I agreed to part take Shelley stood in engine room

on my biggest challenge to date as one member of the seven-man crew aiming to smash the world record aboard “Good Heart”. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the attempt that was due to be underway last month has had to be postponed but with preparations well underway November 2012 will see me face this epic challenge and I can’t wait.

There is also the launch of a new charity, the Disabled Powerboating Trust for which I’ve agreed to become a Trustee.

The Trust is a charity with a simple aim: “make the water accessible to all and see the smiles”.

The trust was inspired by Geoff Holt, All at Sea columnist, former professional yachtsman and wheel chair user. The charity is honoured to have Geoff as its founding Ambassador and I’m honoured to be on board to help bring powerboating to those who wouldn’t normally get the chance.

Keeping Disabled Employees Afloat

Boaters of all abilities enjoying the benefits of powerboating

I WONDER if you can name the only UK based manufacturer of lifejackets?

Bonus points for naming the brand.

I never thought a new sponsorship relationship with Ocean Safety who have generously supplied all of the MCA coded safety equipment for my new wheelchair accessible powerboat would lead to me wheeling around a factory floor in Leven, Scotland, on a bitterly cold winter’s day.

REMPLOY, manufacturers of the KRU brand of lifejacket exclusively for Ocean Safety, are no ordinary business, they

employ only disabled people. In fact they employ nearly 3,000 disabled people across their 54 factories in the UK. But it is their two factories in Fyfe, who make the KRU jackets, in particular, the Leven site which makes more than 100,000 lifejackets a year and has nearly 30 employees, some of whom have worked there for up to forty years.

Reasons for my visit were threefold: to have an opportunity as a disabled yachtsman who actually wears and depends upon their product to see

the jackets being made from scratch; to talk through some practical issues which could enhance their existing range for disabled life-jacket wearers and wheelchair users; and to coincide and celebrate the UN backed annual International Day of the Disabled last month.

There was a fourth, unwritten reason too, for me at least. And that was to draw attention to the fact that the livelihoods of these 3,000 employees in the UK, including the skilled workers who make KRU jackets, is under threat.

The government no longer wants to underwrite the cost of these jobs and a report in front of ministers right now is recommending these disabled employees should not be protected and the REMPLOY manufactories should be brought into the private sector.

It’s an ethical dilemma but the

politicians will almost certainly look at the bottom line figures in an effort to make short term savings. Any such action would almost certainly see the end of the only UK based lifejacket manufactory (plus all of the other REMPLOY product manufactories) and the ruination of these 3,000 tax-payers’ livelihoods, many of whom will almost certainly end up on benefits which will cost the state much more long term.

And what price can you put on dignity and self-esteem as an employee? These guys are not a charity case. They aren’t sewing mail bags or weaving baskets, I was bowled over by the skill levels on the production line. After all, they are making the one product we as recreational water users all depend upon in an emergency at sea.

And should that moment ever arise, our life is genuinely in their hands.

CONGRATULATIONS to Rory Morrison who has been made an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. Rory is the Sailing Captain at the hugely successful New Forest Sailability group based at Spinnaker Sailing Club near Ringwood. The award was made in recognition of her services to disabled sailing and is richly deserved. NFS provide sailing opportunities to more than 1,000 disabled people a year sailing mostly Access dinghies. This year NFS will host the National Access Championships. BIRTH OF A POWERBOATING CHARITY

WITH more than 20 sailing related charities in the UK for donors to select from, I was surprised to learn there was no dedicated charitable support for disabled people who want to get on the water in something a bit faster.

I would call myself a yachtsman but I also like to get afloat and have some fun in a motor boat without the rigmarole of getting changed into wet-weather clothing and your journey being totally dependent on the elements.

And that is the point. For many of the thousands of disabled people I have met over the years, it is as much about getting afloat as it is the means by which they do so.

Powerboating can provide an equally enjoyable and empowering experience.

So congratulations to the Disabled Powerboating Trust on their formation, it is inspired and most timely. I’m even more delighted knowing that my fellow All at Sea columnist, Shelley Jory-Leigh is one of the trustees.

Now the entire powerboating industry from engine manufacturers to boat builders to F1 powerboat racers have an opportunity to support a charity which fits perfectly with their ethos - no more funding of faceless carbon neutral schemes to absolve environmental consciences.

Far better donate money to the Disabled Powerboating Trust so they can get disabled people powerboating and sharing in the fun.

I HAVE been following a discussion about people who fall into the water in marinas.

There are some interesting reports of what precautions marina operators have taken and of what boat owners have done to protect themselves.

Out of the 73 postings on a marina man overboard website, 20 reported a fall into the water from which there were five deaths.

Most of the incidents appeared to be in the UK but it is not clear if all were.

In this country if a casualty is taken to hospital the marina owner has to notify the authorities.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has a record of 203 man overboard incidents over an unknown period and the statistics do not make clear what the various types of incident are or the locations. But not all casualties go to hospital, so the statistics are incomplete.

The major points which have come out of the discussion so far are: Marinas should have ladders in suitable places along the pontoons (similar to that shown in photo 4), the length of the pontoon should dictate the number and there should be a plan in a prominent place for both berthholders and visitors to make themselves aware of the locations.

A telescopic ladder was suggested by one poster and another suggested they were made of plastic.

It is vital that the ladder extends far enough into the water so that it can be climbed with ease.

The nearest pile should have a distinctive marking at base and top to indicate a ladder is nearby. Apparently there should be a ladder for every 30 berths.

One poster suggested a ladder similar to the one in photo 1. It looks good but have you ever tried to board a boat using one?

I have and it is virtually impossible because the bottom rungs go right under the hull or pontoon and it is a struggle to climb up.

Boat owners should consider having a line attached to their boarding ladders so that the ladder can be pulled down easily. Alternatively ladders could be left down but it would be advisable for a note to be put on the chart table or by the helm to warn skippers to pull up the ladder before setting off.

Boat ladders come in all shapes and sizes, have a look at photos 2 and 3 and imagine the difficulty of boarding using the smaller of the two.

Leaving a ladder easily accessible or releasable when you are moored to a buoy is only going to encourage boarding by undesirables.

A major problem is the human body’s reaction to going in the water; cold shock and hyperventilation, means that an individual on his own is unlikely to be able to help himself out of the water unless pretty fit, young, not burdened with too many clothes and not predisposed to panic.

A bit over the top you may say but my mobile phone is kept in a waterproof wallet attached round my neck. But I do not necessarily have the marina office phone number in the memory and that could be something you could consider.

I also have a waterproof hand-held VHF set in my rucksack, which perhaps I should think about having on a lanyard round my neck.

Again you would argue this is a bit over the top and the next step would be hard hats, high visibility jackets, lifejackets worn at all times and where would we stop? On the other hand better safe than sorry.

Those moored in river marinas have the added problem of tides and the possibility of being swept up or 4 down the river. If at low water there are large areas of mud exposed, you have to think about how you will be able to get ashore.

The major conclusions I draw is that it is up to us sailors to assess the risk and take necessary precautions. Marina operators should be doing the same.

Health and safety rules will be useless unless you have thought things through. It is up to you.

AS WE kick start 2012 most of us are already getting excited about the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but the RYA is also hosting plenty of other events...

JANUARY

At the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show (6-15 January) the RYA will be announcing this year’s Yachtmaster of the Year winner. We will be showing the RYA’s ‘Our Sporting Life’ exhibition, a celebration of our Olympic and Paralympic history, before it starts its tour of the country and crowning the RYA Regional Young Sailors of the Year.

There will be new books to reveal and we will be launching Push the Boat Out, a great event for clubs and sailors across the country.

FEBRUARY

In February we celebrate our Powerboat Racing champions at the annual Powerboat Racing Awards dinner. Hosted by RYA Powerboat Racing Manager John Puddifoot and powerboat

racing champion Shelley Jory-Leigh, champions from across the classes and of all ages will be presented with their prizes by the truly inspirational sailor Geoff Holt. “2011 has been a fantastic year of British racers”, said John, “and it is wonderful to be able to celebrate their success at an event like this.”

Coaching demos at the show include basic rig tuning, trapezing tips and core stability secrets; there’ll be stunning displays of the RYA ‘Our Sporting Life’ exhibition; Jack Holt designed dinghies and much more.

It’s RYA Volvo Dinghy Show time.

In association with Yachts and Yachting and Suzuki, the show has something for all dinghy sailors; young or old, novice or pro, cruiser or racer and is the only show in the world dedicated exclusively to all things dinghy sailing.

With hundreds of sailing clubs, classes and associations, as well as all the latest kit, boats and tips from dinghy experts, coaches and sailors all under one roof.

This year there will be talks on technology and tactics; racing rules; what made Jack Holt so influential in dinghy design; plus a look into the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Sail-X competition final.

As we head in to April and May many RYA youth programme events start, including OnBoard sailing and windsurfing festivals, the Team15 windsurfing inter-zone championship and the 2012 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship.

AUGUST

The 2012 London Olympics come to a close on the 12th August, but at the end of the month all eyes will be back on Weymouth & Portland as the Paralympic regatta gets underway. Good luck to all our Team GB sailors.

SEPTEMBER

Even more champions are to be crowned in September when the finals of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship take place at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. Will last year’s winners dominate once more and retain their crown or will new champions emerge? Whatever happens you can be assured of fierce competition!

The RYA Sailability Sunsail Regatta will also take place in September. Racing around the Solent, sailors from all sailing backgrounds and abilities will take to the water in teams for two days of racing on Sunsail’s F40 Racing fleet, whilst raising money for RYA Sailability.

OCTOBER

The RYA Sealine Southern Motor Cruise in July

JULY

Time for motor cruisers to get out and about with the RYA Sealine Southern Motor Cruise. A firm favourite on the calendar each year, participants enjoy a cruise across the channel, and stopovers at some fantastic ports, as well as the equally important socials. It’s a great opportunity for first time channel crossers to do so with support on hand from RYA Instructors and fellow boaters.

RYA Sailability will run the annual Multiclass Regatta at Rutland Sailing Club - can we get even more sailors out for 2012 after the success of 2011?

Then on 21 July we will be encouraging everyone to get out on the water for a national day of celebration. Whether it’s at your club, centre or marina this is the perfect opportunity to show your support for the Olympic and Paralympic sailors and wish Team GB good luck.

And if that isn’t enough on July 27 the XXX Olympiad starts in London. The RYA website will be keeping you up to date with all the action down in Weymouth & Portland, including race results, thoughts and comments from the day’s racing and much more.

As we head towards the end of the year our young windsurfers will once again battle it out to be crowned champion of champions at the Team15 Champions Cup (8 – 9). Will 2011 champions West Kirby Warriors claim the title again or will we have new champions?

NOVEMBER

In November we celebrate some of the boating communities’ unsung heroes at the RYA Community Awards.

Attended by HRH The Princess Royal, these prestigious awards recognise volunteers from across the country for outstanding dedication and achievements in boating.

DECEMBER

As for December, it’s time to say merry Christmas and gear up for another action packed year.

The Olympic year With fewer than 200 days to go, the countdown has truly begun!

BETWEEN the 28 July and 12 August, Weymouth Harbour will play host to the world’s elite dinghy sailors, competing for medals in 10 classes in the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games. 60,000 ticket holders will watch the action from Nothe Gardens, whilst Weymouth Beach will welcome thousands of spectators to join the Bayside Festival, a free event where the sailing and other Olympic events will be screened and a whole host of exciting activities will take place.

INTRODUCING SKANDIA TEAM GBR

Members of Skandia Team GBR, the sailors who will compete for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics, were the first of the Team GB athletes to be officially selected by the British Olympic Association, back in September 2011.

With an impressive medal haul of four golds plus one silver and one bronze from the 2008 Olympics, the chosen sailors will have a very high standard to perform to in front of the home crowds.

A carefully nurtured combination of Olympic old timers and fresh faced

newbies will be headed by Ben Ainslie in the Finn class. Now a household name, Ben is a triple Olympic gold and silver medallist and Britain’s most successful Olympic sailor; he has described this as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to go for a fourth gold medal on home waters.

Fellow Olympic veteran, Iain Percy will aim for a third gold in total and a second in partnership with best friend Andrew Simpson in the Star class, with whom he won the Olympic title in Beijing.

Gold medallist in Beijing, Laser representative, Paul Goodison, will be hoping for a repeat result. He comments: “This is my third Olympic Games – it’s going to be very different to the last two but I’m sure it’s going to be an advantage to be on home waters with a home crowd.”

In the RS:X Men’s and Women’s windsurfing events, Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw will look to build on their respective Olympic bronze medals.

In the men’s 470, Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell have just been announced as the newest addition to the team.

Selection trials for the 49er and Laser Radial are ongoing.

Fresh from a silver medal performance at the ISAF World Championships in Perth prior to Christmas, the women’s match racing trio of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor will be making their Olympic debut in the Elliot 6m class.

“It’s pretty exciting, and it’s great to be part of such a strong team,” said Lucy. “None of the three of us has any Olympic experience, so we don’t entirely know what to expect, but we’re confident in the plans we have in place and we can learn from the other members of the team.”

Already being dubbed the ‘new blondes in a boat’, 470 girls Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark teamed up a little under a year ago and incredibly made selection just seven months later.

The pair came together when double Olympic gold medallist, Sarah Ayton, then sailing with Saskia, left elite sailing to take on full time motherhood. Since then, Hannah and Saskia have not looked back, and the strength of their teamwork has been further proven by their recent silver medal at the ISAF World Championships in Perth.

WATCHING THE GAMES

With some of the best sailing action in the world taking place on our home waters, the 2012 Olympic sailing events promise to be an unmissable experience.

Onshore, there will be a real festival vibe, with the Festival Area screening live action from the water, showcasing local tradition and culture, with free events and family entertainment scheduled daily.

From the water

And what about the main attraction – the actual sailing? The good news

is that visiting boaters will be able to visit the area and watch from the water.

However, there are some restrictions in place.

First of all, you must book your berth in advance, as it won’t be possible for visiting boats to enter the area otherwise; all boats will be security checked on entering the area. Bookings are already being taken so it’s advisable to book as soon as possible!

Boats will be accommodated in Weymouth Bay and Weymouth Harbour, with alongside berths rafted

up and a daily movement plan in place to allow boats to come and go.

Improvements are being made to the harbour, including new showers, extra pontoons, Wi-Fi, pump out facilities and a water taxi serving anchorages in the bay.

Visitors will be free to leave their berth each day to watch the racing, but must stay out of the race course

HM: A lot of determination! We weren’t as prepared as we would usually be due having taken some much-needed time off before the build up to 2012 really starts and so we had to dig pretty deep in a lot of races to pull it out the bag.

AAS: What will be your biggest challenge between now and the start of the Games?

HM: Not getting burnt out by over-doing things. But preparation is key, and we will be doing a lot of work to make sure we are there both mentally and physically.

AAS: What are your favourite things to do away from sailing?

HM: Windsurfing, surfing and chilling out.

Brand new attraction, Going for Gold, showcases eight of the Olympic and Paralympic classes for 2012, including the 49er, star, sonar, Laser and Laser radial, sKUD 16, 2.4 metre, and in the main

boulevard is the unmissable Finn class dinghy.

Found in the North Hall, The Boat Project is a living archive, a 30ft seafaring vessel made from donated wooden items. The artists, the build team, volunteers and crew members are on hand to answer questions about the magnificent boat.

Also in the North Hall, the sail Handling Demo rig is drawing in the crowds and helping sailors of all abilities get to grips with their spinnaker handling.

Visitors brave enough to step out from the warmth of the halls are enjoying the Used Boat Marina where you can step onboard more than 40 boats for sale.

And for those looking for premium products to complement their boating lifestyle, the new Luxury Lifestyle & supercar showcase is set in a stunning open-plan gallery in the south Hall.

On the opening day of the show, Musto marked the launch of its 2012 hPX range with a live Q&A link-up with members of CAMPeR, emirates Team NZL, in Abu Dhabi.

Reaffirming an eight year long

partnership, RYA Sailability and Sunsail announced the dates for a joint regatta on 10-11 September. “It’s a great way to raise awareness and funds,” said Robyn Givens-Jones, Trustee of RYA Sailability.

The RNLI announced its Photographer of the Year as Sam Jones, volunteer crew and Lifeboat Press Office at Tobermory lifeboat station. Sam took the winning photo during a man overboard training exercise in Bloody Bay in July.

To celebrate the launch of its new range of liferafts, Crewsaver is offering an exclusive prize draw to win a four-person ISO Ocean Liferaft. The official liferaft launch took place on the Watersports Action Pool on 6 January.

Jeckells the Sailmakers is celebrating its 180th anniversary, with a limited edition anniversary jacket featuring Jeckells’ striking 180 year logo – a must have for any enthusiast looking to commemorate a piece of sailmaking history.

FlexiSail has welcomed a brand new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379 to its fleet, on display at the show. Three other new additions for 2012 include the Dufour 335, Jeanneau 33i and Dufour 335.

Annabel Vose (17) and Megan Brickwood (16) from Southampton were presented with the prestigious YJA Pantaenius Young Sailor of the Year Award for 2011

on 7 January. The award was presented at the show by Olympic gold medalist, Iain Percy OBe, and celebrates significant achievements in youth sailing.

Annabel and Megan started 2011 in Buenos Aires, Argentina winning the 420 Ladies World Championships at just 16 years of age before winning bronze at the Open 420 Junior european Championships.

Other finalists included 17 year old elliot hanson, silver medalist at the 2011 World and european Laser Radial Youth Championships; and 11 year old Ben Jelf who claimed both UIM World and european Powerboat Championship titles in just his third year of racing.

A total of 13 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners were nominated.

Back at our table, mouth-watering skewers of tender Satay Gai (satay chicken) complimented by Po Pia Tord, (vegetarian spring rolls with glass noodles and sweet chilli sauce), proved to be every bit as delectable as they sounded. With a head chef previously employed at the Intercontinental in Bangkok, there’s no doubting that Kuti’s

offers authentic tasting dishes, of which more than 100 are on offer on the à la carte menu. highlights include lobster stir fried with onions, mixed peppers, mushroom and sweet basil leaves in Thai chilli oil, or grilled sea bass wrapped with banana leaves and Thai herbs served with homemade special spicy sauce. An extensive buffet menu gives further options.

But with the average à la carte main course priced at just under £10, Thai staples such as Gaeng Kiew Wan (green curry) and Phad Thai (noodles) are in tempting abundance. Opting for Gai Phad Gra Phao (wok-sauteed corn fed chicken with garlic and chillies flavoured with holy basil leaves) we found this dish to be cooked to perfection using fresh ingredients, and bursting with flavour.

St Helier Marina JERSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS

GATEWAY TO THE CHANNEL ISLANDS The ideal jumping off point for cruising on either side of the Channel, Jersey is also an attractive location in itself.

The population of this small island may only stand at 90,000, but nonetheless this is the largest of the Channel Islands. As such, Jersey has more of a cosmopolitan air to it than many of its smaller neighbours, and this is hardly surprising given that this is a bolt hole for many millionaires.

THE HISTORY of Jersey is pockmarked with the bickerings of the French and English, which has left a legacy of historic and striking castles. More recently, the Nazis waded in and occupied it from 1940-45. Thankfully, they have long departed, but the island still has plenty to offer, particularly for the cruising sailor.

Stunning scenery and quaint ports abound and the island is within easy reach of the UK. It’s an ideal stopover if you’re considering a cross Channel cruise. St Helier is the capital and offers excellent protection combined with a lively, vibrant town. One striking feature of the Channel Islands is the big tides, which make the provision of a marina with a sill and a decent waiting pontoon a particular boon. St Helier has three marinas: Elizabeth, which is residents only, La Collette, which is all tide, and St Helier, which is closest to the town centre.

ENTERING ST HELIER

WPT 49°10’57N 02°06’ 98W When entering St Helier Marina, one of the big factors to consider is the tide. Care must be taken, particularly if you’re heading across the tide and making use of transits. Access to the marina is around

three hours either side of HW with a max depth of 5m. Depth over the sill is displayed on a digital tide display.

BERTHING AND FACILITIES FACILITIES The marina offers all the facilities you would expect of a modern marina, including a cafe, launderette, parking, recycling facilities, refuse disposal, showers, toilets and WiFi. The excellent Maritime Museum is situated right next to the shower block. The nearest fuel berth is off the northern end of south pier with access three hours either side of HW. You can refill your gas bottles at South Pier Shipyard.

PRICES Day rates for visitors are worked out on a sliding scale depending on size. A boat of between 8m and 9.99m would pay £21.84 for the day. A weekly rate is calculated on the day rate multiplied by six, provided it’s paid in advance. Liftouts are charged at £11.08 per metre per lift.

BOATYARD SERVICES South Pier Shipyard is close to the marina and provides most boat services, including joinery, rigging,

CRUISING GROUNDS

One thing you can certainly say about Jersey is that there are plenty of options if you fancy a cruise. If it’s just a weekend or day sail you’re after, then really there is plenty to explore all around you. Herm, Sark, Alderney and Guernsey all have something different to offer the discerning cruiser, and are a great way to familiarise yourself with the big tides that characterise the area.

Once you’ve gained a bit of confidence, the Channel Islands are a very beautiful place to explore and enjoy. For a day sail from St Helier, head round to Gorey; it features a pretty harbour and makes a pleasant sail. If the tides don’t suit, it’s perfectly possible to anchor off the harbour.

Also worth a visit for day or weekend sailors is the picturesque port of St Aubin with the Old Court House. Well worth stopping at for a spot of luncheon, not least because it was the pub where the fictitious local resident, TV crimefighter Bergerac, fuelled his spiral into alcoholism.

ports of Granville, Lesardrieux and St Malo are beautiful and all within a day’s sail if you time it right. If it’s a week’s cruise you’re after, then the world, or perhaps the English Channel, is your oyster. The prevailing southwesterlies will take you across to the West Country and back on a beam reach, while the Solent right through to the Scillies are all potential destinations.

Victoria Eld has kept her Voyager 35 Seawynds at St Helier Marina for the past three years, living aboard the vessel for much of that period.

Victoria says; “One of the really strong points about Jersey is that you’re only 12 miles or so from the French coast, while the Isle of Wight, Dorset and the beautiful cruising grounds of the West Country are also a day sail away.

“The Channel Islands themselves are really picturesque and you could easily spend a summer exploring all the little ports and anchorages scattered around the islands. I have been sailing pretty much as long as I can remember and there are still places that I haven’t discovered.”

Speaking about St Helier Marina itself, she adds; “The fact that the marina has a sill could, in theory, be seen as a bit of an inconvenience, but it does give you a bit of added security when you’re aboard, which I rather like. And I really love the convenience of being able to step off the boat and go straight into town.”

WHERE TO SHOP CHANDLERS

There are two chandlers within easy reach of the marina basin and both supply a good array of spares and other marine paraphernalia. Both are within a 10 minute walk from the marina: South Pier Marine, South Pier, JE2 3NB. Tel: 01534 711000

Marina Stores, which overlooks the Marina, can supply you with the basics. If you’re after a larger store, Marks and Spencer has a big food store just across La Route de la Liberation. For a bit of local flavour, however, try the Jersey Central Market. This covered market dates back to 1882.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

The Royal Yacht is a short walk from the marina on Regent Road. This rambling establishment boasts four separate bars, two restaurants and also a cafe. There’s even a nightclub, the Drift. Live music abounds and each bar has a markedly different character, so you can really take your pick.

Alternatively, head in the direction of the Pomme d’Or Hotel. This sumptuous Hotel and restaurant is on Liberation Square, overlooking the marina, and is the ideal place to treat yourself after an arduous passage.

WHAT TO SEE

St Helier is a good place to go for a bit of shopping, because it has any number of boutiques to tempt you.

For those seeking an alternative to retail therapy, there are plenty of other attractions. If the sun is out there are several marvellous stretches of beach nearby on which to bake yourself. The numerous forts are also worth a visit: Elizabeth Castle is the nearest and you can walk to it from St Helier at low tide or catch the weird amphibious ferry from St Aubin’s Beach.

Head inland and explore the offerings of the Gerald Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. The legacy of the famous naturalist features an enchanting mix of endangered species.

WINDSURFING

Whether you want to ride the waves or blast around on holiday, windsurfing is really exciting and great fun (you might even get mum and dad having a go with you).

 Fast facts

You don’t have to live by the sea to give it a go. Head down to your local lake, reservoir or gravel pit and you could be out on the water before you know it.

Did you know that speeds of up to 50 knots have been recorded on a windsurfer? You might need to go a bit slower than that to start with!

 Give it a go

If you fancy having a go most training centres will provide you with the necessary kit to get you started – wetsuit, board, rig. You just need to take along your own shorts and rash vest, sunglasses, sunblock; maybe a pair of

wetsuit boots and a towel.

Start off by learning the basics on the RYA beginners Stage 1 course which will teach you how to stand up, hold the sail and get moving. Before you know it you’ll be learning tricks and turns to make you look even more cool!

CREWING A YACHT

Cruising around in a yacht is great fun.

You get to sleep, eat and live on board as you travel from place to place.

 Fast facts

On board the Skipper is the boss – whether it’s your mum or dad, friend or total stranger they’re in charge.

The helmsman is the person steering the boat, so if you are asked to take the helm it’s your turn to steer.

POWERBOATING

If a bit of speed is more up your street try out the excitement of powerboating.

In 2011 11-year-old Ben Jelf set a new world speed record in the GT15 class at a very speedy 43.11mph.

When taking a corner, a Zap Cat powerboat will pull in excess of 3G’s, that’s equivalent to a Space Shuttle during launch and re-entry.

 Give it a go

Get started with the RYA Powerboat level 1 course. You won’t need any previous experience and by the end of the one-day course you can actually drive a powerboat yourself (with adult supervision of course!)

On the course you’ll learn how to: launch and recover a boat, ropework, how to use the VHF radio, boat handling, towing, picking up a buoy, leaving and coming alongside and loads more useful stuff.

DINGHY SAILING

Dinghy Sailing is a great way to start sailing and once you’ve learnt the basics you’ll be taking a boat out on your own or with your family before you know it.

 Fast facts

Dinghies come in many shapes and sizes.

Optimist dinghies are specially designed for sailors aged 8-15 years old.

The wind and weather will change the way you dinghy sails making it go faster or slower.

 Give it a go

To get started why not try a taster session at one of the RYA’s Training

centres or sailing clubs near your home or perhaps when you are on holiday.

The club/centre should provide you with all the kit you need, although you may want to take your own sailing gloves, sun cream and sunglasses, oh and don’t forget a towel!

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink

Winter warmers to beat the cold MULLED WINE or spicy glühwein is often associated with skiing holidays, but it can also make a great winter winner in the sailing club; perhaps after maybe a ‘frostbite’ sail or a few hours’ spent working on the boat outside.

Making mulled wine at home or in the club is not difficult. There are plenty of recipes that can be found in drinks books and on the internet, and most include the basics of cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, lemon zest and sugar. Some add almonds, vanilla, blueberry or ginger of one sort or another, with only slight variations in quantities.

But all this requires a bit of shopping and sometimes just finding the ingredients on the shelf can be slow and frustrating.

The cost of buying all the bits in small quantities will soon add up and so will preparation time.

as using five or six spices. These are usually the exotics so you can easily add slices of oranges or lemons to top up your own mix. Simple pleasure,

easy to buy and quick to prepare.

You still have to warm it up in a saucepan, of course, but never let the mix boil - this weakens the alcohol content and may spoil the flavours. If 10 percent abv seems a bit weak, add a measure or two of vodka, brandy or dry sherry to really customise your own recipe.

The cheapest, easiest and quickest way to make your own mulled wine at home is to buy the spices pre-packed in sachets.

At Tesco, I found Schwartz sachets for only £1.38 a box of six, enough for mulling three 75cl bottles of wine. All you need to do then is add your own brown sugar and slices of oranges and lemons and your party warmer’s ready in plenty of time to have some fun.

SOMETHING SPECIAL

On the other hand, if you really want to do the home-made thing, why not produce something special that you can’t buy in the shops, such as a warm cocktail.

This one is good: gently heat a bottle of Grand Marnier in an airing cupboard or on the radiator or on the wood burner stove, but don’t open it yet. Warm a bottle of straight red wine or a ready-mix mulled wine, in a pan - not boiling, remember!

Drop a sugar cube into each wine glass.

Pour in some warm wine and then add a single measure of the warmed Grand Marnier. That’s all. Quick, special, no long shopping list and a good kick, to boot!

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS

So, if it’s straightforward mulled wine you are after, you can now find some bargain-priced, ready-mixed offers in most supermarkets.

The best one I found was at Tesco where for only £2.99 you get a 75cl bottle at 10 percent abv with no fewer than nine spicy flavouring ingredients - in no particular order or quantity: blueberries, orange, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, lemon, fennel, nutmeg and cardamom. Arguably, only Winter Pimm’s can match this as a seasonal warmer.
