The series will provide a perfect testing ground for Ainslie, who has also confirmed his plan to challenge for the 35th America’s Cup, following the conclusion of the 34th Cup in San Francisco in 2013.

In the meantime, Ainslie will also join ORACLe Racing for the 2013 Cup defence. he will be added to an already impressive crew line-up which includes some of the best sailors in the world; such as James Spithill, youngest ever winning skipper of the Cup, and Russell Coutts, four-times Cup winner and CeO of ORACLe Racing.

The UK round of the award-winning extreme Sailing Series™, now in its sixth year, will be staged in Cardiff on 24-27 August.

The Extreme 40 catamarans, raced by many of the world’s best sailors, will race on Cardiff Bay over four days, with the event open to the public between the 25-27 August as the Extreme 40 fleet race in the circuit’s action packed ‘stadium’ format.

Taking part will be an impressive set of sailors from all over the globe, including skippers Ian Williams (GBR), Roman Hagara (AUT), Pierre Pennec (FRA), Ernesto Bertarelli (SUI) and Morgan Larson (USA).

In a three-year deal, Cardiff won the bid to host the UK event of this global sailing circuit that is only one of four events with ISAF Special Event status. The host venue agreement with Cardiff City is backed by a Welsh Government grant for 2012-2014.

In the spotlIght It’S been a busy start to the year for one man in particular. What, with just a few months to go until he competes for a fifth Olympic medal; the Finn Gold Cup coming up on his home waters; guest appearances at the london Boat Show; a new clothing collection from Henri lloyd to endorse; oh yes, and the small matter of a new America’s Cup campaign to announce - Britain’s most successful Olympic sailor of all time, Ben Ainslie CBe has certainly got a lot on his plate.

Ben’s latest announcement means that almost as soon as he steps ashore from the last race of the Olympics, he will be boarding a plane to San Fransisco in order to take up the helm of an AC45 wing-sailed catamaran in the America’s Cup World Series. this exciting, actionpacked series starts in September and is the precursor to the America’s Cup. Ben has also stated that his next ambition, after the 2012 Olympics, is to win the America’s Cup. In return for the 3 million euros it costs to underwrite an AC World Series campaign, he has agreed to lend his services to Russell Coutts of ORACle Racing in the 34th Cup in 2013, a partnership which will most probably land him the role of tactician rather than helm, yet another chance for him to cut his teeth before he finally gets to handle his own campaign for the 35th Cup sometime after 2013.

So will 2012 see Ben bow out from Olympic sailing? Unlikely.

2016 is still on his horizon, but for now, a shift in

focus has landed the Cup firmly at the top of his agenda. the only thing which might knock it off in the meantime – other than going for gold at 2012 of course - is the impending RYA tribunal following his incident of ‘gross misconduct’ at December’s ISAF World Championships in Perth. the hearing is expected to take place within the next month. Ben has repeatedly said that he “hugely regrets the situation” and acknowledges that whatever the outcome he will have to accept the decision. the RYA has it in its power to enforce a ban that will see him miss this summer’s Olympic Games, but in reality, that’s not a road the governing body is likely to want to go down.

So, being as he is on the brink of becoming the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, going forwards, Ben is going to have to put up with being in the media spotlight - more so now than ever before. And once he gets his teeth properly into his America’s Cup campaign, that spotlight will only get brighter.

His AC World Series crew is yet to be announced; with no guarantee he will pick from fellow Brits, it’s likely there will be a sprinkling of ORACle Racing chaps onboard. therefore it’s good to hear that Ben will be campaigning under the burgee of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. that such a legend will still be flying the flag for GBR as he wends his way closer to a shot at the oldest international trophy of any sport will certainly be good thing for British sailing once the spotlight falls away from our shores at the end of 2012.

And so, we wish him the very best of British.

Push the boat out With flags waving and the sound of confetti cannons firing the RYA officially launched it’s ‘Push the Boat Out’ event at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show.

The event, which takes place on 21 July, one week before the start of the London 2012 Games, is aimed at encouraging everyone across the country to get out on the water and show their support for the British Sailing Team, as well as showcase what a great sport sailing is.

schools, marinas and all boaters, whether sail, motor or windsurfing, are being asked to get involved and host an event or just get on the water for the day.

“We are hoping to get as many people out on the water as possible on Push the Boat Out day,” explained Sail for Gold event coordinator Celia Edgington.

“We would love people to choose a time in the day to wave flags and show their support for the team. We’re asking people to take photos of their day,

Tall Ship STaRS in pageanT

tHe tall ship tenacious, which was designed and built to be sailed by a mixed crew of able-bodied and disabled people including wheelchair users, has been chosen to take part in the thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on 3 June to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. At 65m, tenacious is one of the largest ships taking part and will form part of the ‘Avenue of Sail’ through which the smaller vessels will pass.

ThunderCat racing, which involves close-fought action between lightweight 4-metre inflatable catamaran racing powerboats, is currently enjoying a huge surge in popularity, with racing set to take place in 18 countries during 2012.

The UK is no exception. Seven rounds will make up the 2012 RYA National Championship series, combining three different styles of racing; surf racing;

flat-water circuit racing; and endurance long-haul racing, where teams test their stamina over a 60 mile long course.

The first round will be held at Cornwall’s world-renowned Watergate Bay, with sandy beach and excellent spectator opportunities. Subsequent venues include Bournemouth, Lowestoft and Folkestone.

Organisers are expecting an excellent turn out; interest in ThunderCat racing,

which can see driver and co-pilot push the boats to speeds of up to 65mph, has gathered real momentum recently.

James Tapp the UK’s Events Coordinator explains: “The TC Racing team has worked really hard to bring new exciting venues for both the general public and competitors as well as improving the overall safety through better rules and education of competitors.”

Race organiser, Fiona Pascoe, comments: “The sport has developed a sustainable mix of affordable and competitive racing – new teams are entering every year and they are even joining from other racing series to get a bit of the action. Overwhelming support A new charity which aims to get more people with disabilities on the water in powerboats has received overwhelming support at its first event, held during the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show.

The Disabled Powerboating Trust held a party at Sunseeker International hosted by the inspiration for the charity, its first

ambassador and All at Sea columnist, Geoff Holt MBe. Geoff, who is a wheel chair user, encouraged individuals and companies both in and beyond the marine industry to get involved. He revealed that, although there are many sailing charities for people with disabilities, this is the first charity to use powerboats.

RiBeX revamps with new name RIBeX has been renamed ‘The Powerboat and RIB Show’ in line with major changes that will make the event even more exciting and accessible for visitors.

In its 14th year, the organisers are preparing to propel the event to new heights with a new name, new location and other initiatives that they predict will elevate it to the next level.

As well as being held at prestigious Portsmouth venue, Gunwharf Quays, for the first time, the exhibition will now feature powerboats of every description, making it the only show representing the

entire powerboat market under 45ft.

Among the attractions will be a wide selection of RIBs, powerboats and associated products for sale, the opportunity to trial boats on the open water and free RIB rides. It will also be completely free for visitors!

Taking place from 11-13 May and featuring a host of special exhibits from leading names within the international marine industry, it is expected to attract between 80,000 and 100,000 people over the weekend. www.powerboatandribshow.com

The Trust will raise money, identify providers of suitable craft, make grants and provide information to those with disabilities who wish to access the water under power. Its first goal is to get at least 25 companies to adopt the Disabled Powerboating Trust as their chosen charity for 2012.

tHe Brewin Dolphin commodores’ cup will be held off cowes, isle of wight, from 21-28 July. interest from teams is running high with challenges from several nations including: england, netherlands, France, ireland and Hong Kong. eddie warden owen, chief executive of organisers, the Royal ocean Racing club, is very happy with the way things are shaping up for the 11th biennial event. He says:”it would appear that the new format of allowing teams to be made up of three boats of any size and the availability of good boats to charter, has prompted interest from outside of europe too. the Brewin Dolphin commodores’ cup is shaping up to be a very competitive regatta.” in 2008 RYA team GBR won the commodores’ cup and narrowly missed out to ireland in 2010. this year, the aim will be to pick four teams who have the potential to win this summer as well as in future years.

leg 3 sets off from secret port

Six Volvo Ocean Race teams are currently battling head to head on leg 3 stage 2 of the race, en route to Sanya, China. The fleet left the ‘secret’ port of Male in the Maldives on 22 January and is now taking on the 3000 nautical-mile course.

Antipiracy measures taken by race organisers resulted in a cargo ship carrying five of the yachts from the stop-over port of Abu Dhabi to the ‘secret location’ and made for a tight turn around for the start. Team Sanya, which encountered gear problems on leg two and was unable to reach Abu Dhabi, was reunited with the rest of the fleet on their arrival in the Maldives.

Cited by all the skippers as one of the most challenging of the race, leg 3 takes the fleet across the indian Ocean to the north west tip of Sumatra, down through the congested waters of the Malacca Straits before turning north east for a final gruelling slog through the South China Sea to the finish on the Chinese island of Sanya. A minefield of hazards await, including monsoon winds, a collision course with hundreds of merchant ships and a brutal week-long beat in rough seas.

The start of the leg saw Team Sanya determined to make up for previous disasters, as they led the fleet off the line. They continued to scrap for the

lead as less than half a nautical mile separated the six-boat fleet in the first few hours of sailing, and all the crews struggling to contend with the hot and humid tropical conditions.

A crisis for Telefónica’s crew unfolded just hours into the race, as they struggled to repair damage to their bowsprit caused by a fitting failure on their enormous code zero headsail.

A fascinating battle has continued to take place on this leg as the fleet remains within just a few miles of each other several days into the race. The fleet is expected to reach Sanya in early February.

GBR Paralympians win Worlds

AlexAnDRA Rickham and niki Birrell have etched their names on the SKUD World Championship trophy for the fourth consecutive year after a hardfought victory at the iFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships at Charlotte Harbour, Florida.

The Skandia Team GBR duo, who were selected as the first athletes to ParalympicsGB in August, saw their Paralympic year off to the best possible start by claiming the world crown for the fourth time after what 25-year-old crew Birrell describes as the “shiftiest week we’ve ever sailed”.

points after a nail-biting final race, with silver going to the American pair of Jennifer French and JeanPaul Creignou.

“We’re unbelievably happy to have won the Worlds again – and it’s an even nicer feeling considering it was so tight, right down to the bottom mark of the last race, to know we can hold and pull through when the pressure is on,” Birrell explained.

John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas also got their Paralympic year off to a medalwinning start with a bronze from the three-person Sonar class.

FAlmoUth Watersports Centre is to host the Finn Gold Cup, taking place between 13-19 may. the event will attract the very best sailors from around the globe, with many competitors challenging for their olympic qualification and others, who have already qualified, using the event for crucial tuning ahead of the summer olympics.

Five-times winner of the Gold Cup and a Falmouth local, Ben Ainslie CBe has already confirmed his entry. Ben said: “It fills me with great pride that Cornwall will be hosting the 2012

Finn Gold Cup, Falmouth has some fantastic sailing facilities and it’s a great opportunity to showcase them to the sailing world. I grew up in the area and my parents still live there, I’m looking forward to competing, it will be exciting to sail in my home town.”

Current holder of the Finn Gold Cup is Giles Scott, who will be seeking to defend his title at this event.

A total of 11 races will be sailed, with two races per day for five days, the sixth and final day (18 may) will see a medal race.

NEWS IN BRIEF TENDER LAUNCH

What about your homework?

MOST of us who have children could be forgiven for wondering what might have been going through the heads of the Laura Dekker’s mum and dad as she stepped off her yacht Guppy in Saint Maarten last month to become the youngest person to sail solo around the globe.

It was reported that her parents, Dick Dekker and Babs Muller, her grandparents, her sister Kim and a 400-strong crowd of well-wishers on shore and in small boats jumped and cheered. Miss Dekker, we are told, waved back.

Well she might but was the wave in salute to her family, to recognise a triumph or one of relief?

Possibly all three, plus a few more emotions unknown to most of us who have never faced and beaten such a daring challenge.

She told reporters: “There were moments where I was like: ‘what the hell am I doing out here?’ but I never wanted to stop. It’s a dream, and I

wanted to do it.”

Miss Dekker, who is 16 years and four months old, cut six months off the unofficial record set in 2010 by Australian Jessica Watson, who was days away from her 17th birthday when she completed her own voyage.

They make Britain’s Michael Perham from Potters Bar seem positively elderly. He was 17 years and 164 days when he became the youngest person to sail around the world solo in August 2009.

Laura’s voyage caused controversy in the Dutch courts when officials - spoilsports or sensible caring adults, depending on your point of view – argued that she should be in the classroom rather than swanning around the oceans.

Child court judges eventually relented, with the condition that she kept up her schoolwork online.

That was a whole new take on “Get upstairs and finish your homework!”

The row led to Guinness World Records and the World Sailing Speed Record Council deciding to stop recognising records for youngest sailors to discourage dangerous attempts.

Most of us who play around in boats enjoy it partly because of the thrill in

pitting ourselves against the lurking dangers of wind and water.

We are none too keen on over-

zealous health and safety nonsense.

When our children want to join in the fun or, like Laura, aim to live their own dreams, albeit on a much smaller scale, we do quick informal risk assessments, give them a hug of encouragement and keep watch from just out of sight, rather than over the horizon.

Many probably think those Dutch officials had a point, despite all of the safety and communications devices available to modern sailors.

Me? I’m not telling. I know I am not as brave as Laura’s parents in risking not only a child but the outcry if the worst had happened.

Thankfully it didn’t and we should salute the courage of young Laura herself.

But whatever their age, our offspring never stop being children. And I still have that niggle about who was making sure she did her homework . . .

Funding boost for clubs and centres FROM refurbished changing rooms to new pontoons, 17 sailing clubs and centres across the country are celebrating after successfully securing funding through Sport England’s Inspired Facility Fund.

Part of ‘Places People Play’, Sport England’s programme to deliver a London 2012 legacy of increased mass participation in sport, Inspired Facilities is investing £50 million of National Lottery funding in up to 1000 community sports projects between 2011 and 2014.

Funding will help clubs to refurbish or upgrade sports facilities or to convert existing buildings into venues suitable

for sport which are accessible to the whole community.

One sailing project to successfully receive funding is Hykeham Sailing Club in the East Midlands who have been awarded £50,000 to improve their launching facilities.

“We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded with this funding,” explains Vincent Wilkinson, commodore at the club. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to improve the embankment of the grounds and the jetties which are over 50 years old.”

Royal Southern hosts anniversary festival TAKING centre stage in this summer’s line-up of 175th Anniversary events being hosted and run by the Royal Southern Yacht Club is the Club’s 175 Anniversary Open Regatta.

Incorporating both its regular May and June Summer Series Regattas, this special event runs from 25 May to 10 June and will comprise 16 days of activity ashore and afloat. Encompassing all classes of day boats, keelboats and ocean racing boats that regularly support the Club, the schedule even introduces some spectator-friendly model boat racing.

The programme also includes the 50th running of the Cowes-Deauville Race on

1-2 June with VIP guests and sailors from both sides of the Channel participating.

To date the Royal Southern is anticipating that 33 classes and over 500 sailors will participate in what will be the largest gathering of competitive yacht racing ever run under its burgee, a real Solent spectacular.

The Anniversary Regatta will be rounded off in style with a fabulous Mount Gay Rum Red Cap Party on 9 June.

Mount Gay Rum joins the Royal Southern’s growing family of 175th Anniversary corporate partners including Piper-Heidsieck champagne, Gaastra yachting wear, and Swarovski Optik.

Also successful are Helford River Sailing Club in Cornwall and Staunton Harold Sailing Club in the East Midlands.

“There are four remaining rounds of funding between now and 2014,” explains Graham Manchester, RYA Strategic Lead on Adult Participation. “If your club facilities are looking tired and an investment would increase usage and community activity you should consider this fund. JOHN Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, presented two apprentices from Discovery Yachts, Kevin Baker and Roy Tidman, with their Marine Apprenticeship Graduation Awards during the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show. The event, organised by the British Marine Federation, celebrated the achievements of over 20 marine apprentices who graduated in 2011, with the technical skills required for bespoke boatbuilding.

British Keelboat Academy sailor lands RC44 job

THE 2012 RYA Conference for Short Range Certificate Assessors is to be sponsored for the first time by Standard Horizon and will take place at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on 16 April.

MARINAS GET ACTIVE

THE RYA Active Marina Programme has celebrated the end of a successful 2011 pilot year.

Partnering with marinas, RYA recognised training centres, berth holder groups and yacht clubs, the programme was created to encourage and support increased berth holder activity to help people to get more from their boating through workshops, group cruises and social events. The scheme will continue into 2012.

SEA SHANTIES

CORNISH sea shanty group, Stamp and Go, will be raising money for the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, which supports seafarers in need, with the launch of their latest CD on 1 February. The launch will be held at The Seiners Hotel in Perranporth and will see the group perform songs from their new CD entitled ‘Sail Away’, celebrating the lives of maritime workers.

NEIL Payne, 20, a student at Portsmouth University, has been selected to support Team Aqua at the first 2012 RC44 Championship Tour regatta in Spain in February.

In 2010, Neil began training with the British Keelboat Academy, a partnership

between the RYA and Cowes-based UKSA which is developing the next generation of young British sailing talent. He is currently sailing on Farr 45 Kolgá, which has been lent to the Academy by Rán Racing.

Neil is the first sailor from the BKA

to be recruited by Team Aqua. With a total of five places available to BKA squad members at different regattas throughout 2012, Team Aqua has received many applications.

Praised after 9 hours at sea A LIFEBOAT crew who rescued a charity rower after his oar had broken have been praised for their professionalism.

Volunteers from the RNLI lifeboat station at Barra, in the Scottish Western Isles, spent nearly 9 hours at sea when they went to the aid of Gaelic Television and Radio Presenter Niall Iain Macdonald.

They launched their all-weather lifeboat

TWO girls rescued from rocks by Tenby lifeboat volunteers on 22 January raised the alarm through Facebook. Luckily for them, Tenby RNLI volunteer Ross Edwards was online at the time and spotted the message. He insisted the girls phoned Milford Haven Coastguard immediately. Just after 4pm, Milford Haven Coastguard requested the launch of Tenby inshore RNLI lifeboat after they received a call from the girls. The lifeboat crew found the girls, who were unhurt.

DINGHY SAILOR SAVED

CALSHOT’S all-weather and inshore lifeboats were on exercise on 22 January when the volunteers were alerted to reports of a person overboard from a small dinghy near Hill Head.

The man was out sailing with his two teenage daughters in single-handed dinghies when his boat capsized and he was thrown into the water. His daughters returned one dinghy to shore and headed back to the scene in the other to try and rescue him.

By this time lifeboats arrived on scene. The inshore lifeboat volunteers pulled the man – who was suffering from hypothermia – aboard and transferred him to the all-weather lifeboat. He was then taken ashore where an ambulance was waiting to take him to hospital. The inshore lifeboat crew then towed the damaged dinghy with one of the daughters aboard to Hill Head harbour whilst the other daughter sailed their dinghy back to shore.

Deputy Second Coxswain Mark Laughlin said: “The man was very lucky that the alarm was raised by a member of the public who saw the incident. With the sea temperature at around 8 degrees and the wind near gale force, condition could have been worse.”

A joint BMF and RYA initiative

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms

APPARENTLY ‘sustainability’ is going to continue to be a buzzword for many companies in 2012 according to the Chartered Institute of Marketing, with firms keen to show their ethical sourcing policies and trim any excess in areas such as water, energy and waste – all good sense both environmentally and financially in these lean times.

So good news for programmes like The Green Blue, but the flip side is that also according to the CIM, the consumer - in other words, the ‘average’ boater, berth holder or club member - will grow increasingly tired of green claims in 2012.

That means we’re going to have to work harder or perhaps smarter to keep the messages fresh and appealing.

UNUSUAL TACTICS

Looking around the world at new ideas from other environmental boating initiatives, the headline topics are pretty standard fare: sewage, bilge and greywater discharges, oil and fuel, antifoul, cleaning and maintenance products, non native invasive species and interactions with wildlife. And

generally the formats are pretty similar too – posters, newsletters, signage, presentations, boat shows and online toolkits for boats and businesses. But on closer inspection there are a few unusual tactics.

The Boating Clean and Green Campaign run by the California Department of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission deploy teams of ‘dockwalkers’ – volunteers who do as the name suggests and ‘walk the docks’ handing out leaflets, eco-kits and talking to boaters about what they can do on board.

You may experience something similar from the ‘Eco Gestes’ campaign running along the Cote d’Azur from May to August each year. Don’t be surprised if a RIB or kayak coming alongside with a team of branded ambassadors to have a friendly chat about doing your bit on board!

Powering on through!

WITH the British economy in the state it is and the cost of fuel still increasing, most news around powerboat racing seems to be doom and gloom, especially in the search for sponsorship to fund a race team.

But despite this there’s still a positive vibe coming from the powerboat racers and with RB12 happening this year along with the British Powerboat Festival at Cowes, hopefully there will continue to be gold medals and world powerboat champions for the British powerboat racers to prove we can cut it just like the GBR sailors.

Whilst I spent most of the first two weeks of January up in London at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show I did manage to take a mid-week break from appearing at the Clarks Knowledge Zone to attend the official opening of the new Scorpion RIBs facility in Lymington.

As many of you may remember, I’m a bit of a fan of Scorpion RIBs like many of

the UK’s powerboat racers; I raced the infamous Cowes Torquay Cowes Race in 2009 with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston amongst my crew onboard the new Scorpion Sting, which handled like a dream in the testing conditions to bring us home 1st in class and 4th overall.

Other Scorpion RIBs that have secured their place in British powerboat history include RYA powerboat racing manager John Puddifoot’s Mystic Dragon, Mike Deacon’s Hot Lemon and Christ Strickland’s Sea Hound V, with the two latter both setting 2011 Speed Records.

So in this time of uncertainty in the industry it was great to be invited to Scorpion’s new facilities for a tour with managing director Patrick Byrne. Patrick explained to me that the new facility will allow for better quality control, improved efficiency, and the potential to double production to nearly 50 boats a year.

The move consolidates all the various elements of Scorpion production from four different sites into one streamlined, modern facility, dedicated to producing RIBs more efficiently to meet an increase in export demand.

“We are proud to have our own research and design team, laminators, tube makers and finishers based in this superb, new Lymington facility,” explained Patrick.

“We have invested in our design and development team, our marketing activity, staff training (introducing an apprentice scheme), and are now streamlining our production at Ampress Park. We have a global outlook on marketing and are constantly developing export markets to continue strong sales of our boats. Our Ampress facility will allow us to expand and develop these markets more efficiently. We anticipate

increasing our workforce by 10 percent following the move to cope with our export order book.”

The end of January saw Scorpion RIBs at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, the largest boat show in Europe, showcasing its three new models to the European crowds.

Sailing with an even keel The Even Keel Project provides a welcome opportunity for both able-bodied and disabled people to sail.

Many of us have seen the Artemis 20 on the water in recent years, its elegant and sleek black carbon fibre hull cutting a dash at regattas along the south coast. And if you have missed it, then you will surely remember Hilary Lister’s sail around Great Britain in 2009 in her Artemis 20, Me Too.

THE boat itself is the vessel of choice for the Even Keel Project (EKP), a charity established to help disabled and disadvantaged people realise their potential through the medium of sailing.

If you think this boat is dumbed-down for disabled sailors to use, then think again.

Firstly its radical design means these boats are not just sailed by disabled sailors. Its competitiveness and high performance rig makes it a boat of choice for many, regardless of ability.

However, its design also makes it configurable for a range of different setups to accommodate most disabilities if required, including solo or tandem seating options. In so doing, they have avoided the unfortunate and unwelcome stigma attached to some classes as ‘disabled only’.

Although the EKP was founded three years ago using sponsorship as its operating format, a tough economic climate forced the EKP to become a charity in 2011. However, this is no bad thing, as it offers more variety and opportunities for raising funds.

THE PROJECT

The EKP has a sound development strategy that includes setting up EKP sites around the globe and the potential of including the Artemis 20 as a new class in the 2016 Paralympic Games, a goal which has the backing of many who have sailed her. The EKP also has an enviable track record of delivering on its promises, from leisurely sailing to providing sail racing opportunities to more than 400 people a year at regattas around the UK, such as the RYA Multiclass Regatta at Rutland and the Isle of Sheppey. Last year, funded by a grant from RYA Sailability, the EKP created the first disabled start line in the Chichester Federation Week regatta at Hayling Island Sailing Club where disabled competitors held their own

against their more agile counterparts.

The EKP has also shown its credentials by attending the last Volvo Ocean Race during the stop-over in Galway, Ireland, where skippers and crew of the VOR boats offered their support by sailing with many of the EKP sailors and fulfilling dreams for many. The event received world-wide media attention and provided a welcome respite from ocean sailing for the skippers involved.

Dave Rutter, EKP Director explains: “We also created a race during Cowes Week called the Artemis Even Keel Challenge and had Olympic and professional sailors sailing with guests. To be able to race in Cowes Week is something special, let alone if you have never sailed before and also have a disability. To be sailing with a professional yachtsman such as Brian Thompson, Nick Rogers, Steve White and Rob Greenhalgh simply adds icing to the cake.”

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS

Although based in the Chichester area, the EKP has a proactive approach and often takes a fleet of up to six boats on the road to compete in established regattas around the UK. The idea is to demonstrate the capabilities and versatility of the Artemis 20 whilst encouraging groups and individuals to establish their own fleets. Whilst helping sailors learn to race, there is equal emphasis on reaching out to

I will have a limited number of spaces for guests on the boat so I hope to take some local disabled children from Naomi House Hospice and the Rose Road Association of which I’m a Patron. It’s going to be a fantastic day, a true ‘once in a lifetime’ event, and we can’t wait to be there and see the spectacle. And echoing those sentiments with his support, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston adds: “The Even Keel Project provides a welcome opportunity for both ablebodied and disabled people to sail, race and enjoy what is best about our sport.”

This year the project aims to continue in its success by attending even more events than before including Federation Week and again, in Galway, for the finish of this Volvo Ocean Race. Its goal is to try and expose the project to as many people as possible and to get them out on the water.

To continue the development of their programme, the EKP is looking for volunteers and would like to hear from anyone who feels they could help, in any number of ways from boat maintenance, delivering the boats to venues and helping them raise additional funds.

The project also offers good branding and CSR opportunities for potential sponsors and would welcome the chance to explain the benefits of helping such a marvelous project.

I think I’ll leave the last word to my friend Hilary Lister who blew the rule book out of the water when she sailed her Artemis around the UK using only her breath, sipping and puffing on a straw: “The Artemis 20 boats have enabled me to realise my dreams.

Sailing to me is the escape route from my disability. As a quadriplegic, it wasn’t apparent at first that I would even be able to passenger a boat, let alone sail one single-handedly. When I’m sailing I go into a different world, it’s like I’m flying!

GBR Match Race Girls

Match racing demands the highest levels of team work and boat handling.

We meet the British Olympic match racing team and find out what it’s all about.

LUCY Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor, aka the GBR Match Race Girls, earned their selection to Team GB in November 2011. They are currently ranked second in the ISAF Women’s World Match Racing rankings, behind USA’s Anna Tunnicliffe.

At the ISAF World Championships in December 2011, the British team added a well-deserved silver medal to their lengthy list of international match racing successes, which includes the 2010 Women’s Match Racing World Championships. In the final match, the girls faced tough competition from their American rival who walked away with the gold medal.

But with a full on training programme

in place between now and August and the support of the home crowd behind them, this tactical trio are confident of a putting in a good performance on home waters at the 2012 Olympic Games.

MEN’S 470 SAILORS CHOSEN FOR TEAM GB

Patience and Bithell earn 2012 call-up LUKE Patience and Stuart Bithell have been nominated to Team GB by the RYA to take part in the London 2012 Olympics.

TACTICAL TRIO WHAT COURSE WILL THE OLYMPIC MATCH RACING USE?

Each race will last approximately 20 minutes, with the course consisting of four legs over a windward/leeward configuration. Spinnakers are permitted on the downwind legs, adding another dimension to the boathandling skills required.

HOW DOES A MATCH RACING START WORK?

Match racing starts are different to fleet racing starts, with the boats required to remain at separate ends of the line until a given time. 10 minute and 5 minute warning guns are fired to indicate this.

Then, with four minutes until the actual start, the two boats (each flying either a blue or yellow flag) enter the start area from opposite ends of the starting line. During the next four minutes, the boats will engage in a furious pre-start battle, in which each will try to gain an advantage over the other, either by forcing a penalty or getting a better position off the line.

HOW DOES THE PENALTY SYSTEM WORK?

Each race is watched by two umpires who follow the boats in small RIBs, making instant decisions on alleged rule infringements and flying the corresponding blue or yellow flag to indicate which boat should take the penalty turn, or a green flag if they consider no infringement to have been made. Penalties can be taken at any point during the race.

AAS: How would you each describe yourself?

Kate: Smiley Lucy: Laid back Annie: Dedicated AAS: What do you think about match racing being an Olympic sailing event – both for yourselves as competitors and for spectators?

Kate: Match racing is very exciting to watch and take part in as there is so much more interaction between the boats so I think come the Games, especially with using the Elliotts, it will be quite a spectacle.

AAS: How do you train for match racing?

Annie: We generally do shorter, more intense races that focus on boat positioning and boat handling, as opposed to working on equipment and speed, like in fleet racing. In the gym it’s more dynamic sprint work... it’s good fun!

AAS: What responsibilities do you each have on board?

Lucy: We are quite short-handed on board so there is a huge amount of overlap with our jobs. Kate is mainly watching out for breeze, Annie is

watching what the other boat is doing, that leaves me trying to keep the boat sailing fast!

AAS: Is there ever any sibling rivalry onboard?!

Lucy: Kate and I try to keep the relationship when we’re sailing a professional one; however this is not always completely realistic and there can be the odd difference of opinion! But usually being sisters is an advantage because we have always got on well anyway and we are usually on the same page, so we generally work together really well. Scary how much time end up spending with each other though!

AAS: Will you feel any extra pressure knowing that the match racing course during the Games is the one right in view of the ticketed spectator’s area?!

Annie: No, we won’t feel any extra pressure I don’t think because no one can put more pressure on us than ourselves, but it will definitely be different being able to hear people cheering. In Perth at the ISAF World Championships it spurred us on - so get cheering!

AAS: Congrats on the silver medal at the recent ISAF World Championship in Perth – what it take to win?

Lucy: Thanks, it was a really tough event because it was so long. It was certainly a relief to get into the finals but we also felt we deserved it because it was the best we sailed all year.

AAS: How did you feel when you heard you’d been selected for the 2012 Olympics?

Lucy: It was an awesome feeling being selected for Team GB and an honour to part of such a strong team but the reality of how little time there is left to go is slightly nerve racking!

AAS: What will be your biggest challenge between now and then?

Lucy: I think there is the potential to be quite a few distractions between now and the Games, but we have a lot to get done in not very much time so staying fit and healthy and being efficient with our time while also being able to switch off at times could be a challenge.

AAS: What major milestones are in place for you between now and July 2012?

Annie: My 32nd birthday is a big one, moving house is another; but in general making sure we are in the best place possible for going for gold in the summer.

AAS: What was the single biggest motivation in your sailing career?

Annie: Training with Shirley Robertson, Sarah Webb and Sarah Ayton in the lead up to the 2004 Olympics and watching them go on to win gold.

AAS: What is it that has got you this far?

Kate: Postponing university helped!

The support of my family has been fantastic too.

They join 13 other sailors who have already been selected; selection trials in the 49er and Laser Radial are ongoing.

RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park said: “Campaigning to represent Team GB at the Games in this class is probably the hardest challenge – with double Olympic silver medallist Nick Rogers, sailing with Chris Grube, and double World Champions Nic Asher and Elliot Willis to contend with it’s been a tough battle to gain the British selection spot.”

RISE UP THE RANKINGS

The duo has been competing together since 2009 when they debuted by winning a silver medal at the 470 World Championship after spending just two weeks in a boat together.

In the relatively brief time together since then, they have enjoyed a steady rise in the ISAF world rankings. They finished the 2010 season ranked fourth in the world and clinched their place on Team GB by again winning a silver medal at the 2011 ISAF World Championships in December 2011 in Perth, Australia.

Speaking as the announcement was made, Stuart said: “Although we never doubted ourselves, it’s still a big relief to have been selected and to know that we’ll be there on the startline at our first Olympic Games and doing our best to bring home gold. We’re part of the most successful sailing team in the world, and at our first Games, to have the support of world’s best sailors and staff guiding us through can only be a good thing.”

Luke commented: “I can’t wait to be a part of a home Games in one of the greatest cities on earth. We’re not just going for the t-shirt though.

It’s been hard work getting to this point but we’re by no means letting our hair down now; we have just one goal and that’s to win a gold medal this summer in London.”

STICKY’S TIPS

IT must be quite a few years since I needed to look at the galvanic table to show how metals which are ‘anodic’ or ‘less noble’ at the negative end of the series are more likely to be attacked by corrosion.

For sailors the critical point is the difference in potential of the two materials being considered as a joined pair. A very small difference is likely to result in galvanic corrosion.

I am no physicist, and am open to correction by the sailor scientists, but I have been brought up to believe that stainless steel and aluminium and galvanised steel are too close for comfort.

Photo 1 shows an aluminium anchor with a stainless swivel, and a stainless shackle (perhaps a bit undersize) made onto the galvanized chain. This was on a boat, raced quite regularly, and which

was moored in a marina. The anchor was probably only used for kedging on a windless day during a race; but for a cruising yacht, one would need to think about arranging things so that the combination of metals did not encourage corrosion.

When I checked this anchor over on joining the boat, I found the pin on the swivel had come completely adrift, and was lying on top of the chain and warp

ANOTHER problem with these swivels is that the Allen key size is so small it usually twists before tightening the bolt sufficiently. I have always preferred a good sized shackle, set up so that it cannot work loose; remember that if you are not mousing a shackle – and I do recommend you should do so – that the pin can work loose if the

in the anchor locker. Charterers should always check over all safety equipment; the boat may have had a rapid turnaround and the gear may not have been properly checked.

There has been degradation of the swivels, and problems with the bolts on some anchor fittings. One owner claimed that the surface rust on his shackle helped to keep the pin in position; this may well be true, but is not a method to jerking on your chain is in the wrong direction.

To ensure you get this right, when you fasten the shackle pin in your ground tackle, hold the open shackle in your right hand with the open end away from you, and put the pin through from the left using your left hand (photo 2). You should be able to see that any upward jerking of a pitching boat will tighten the shackle pin rather than loosen it. It goes without saying that the pin must be moused, and purists will mouse a galvanized shackle with galvanized

If you are thinking of buying a new anchor, just be aware that some far eastern products may not deliver the service they are supposed to and anchors are not only sometimes badly bent but also lost when put to use.

The current economy may have caused many of us to pause and take a deep breath before we move on, but those dreams we’ve always had of moving to the waterfront linger as strong as ever and they don’t always want to remain a dream.

Chris Chaddock has been organising boat jumbles for over 25 years; here he gives a brief preview of February’s upcoming Boat Jumble Association approved events.

Boat Jumbles – the place to bag a bargain February is one of those cold winter months when the boat is out of the water and you are tackling the dreaded refit tasks. but all that work and no play means you are due a day off now and again, and what better way to spend it than at one of the regional boat jumbles around the country. What’s not to like about meeting up with your boating pals during the off-season for a day of nautical bargain hunting? and if you attend a boat Jumble association approved show you know it will be worth the drive, as it has to meet their vetting criteria to make the listing.

What to expect

For those who haven’t been to a boat jumble for a while or perhaps never at all, you can expect to see a 50:50 mixture of new and second-hand goods. During these difficult economic times many chandlers or online retailers attend to sell ends-of-lines at super low prices, and

private sellers can be found selling their unwanted chandlery too.

So if you are in the market for antifouling, deck paint, new anodes, lines or fenders or are just looking to touch up your bright work, get along to one of these forthcoming events. I can guarantee you will find a bargain, for February is the month when the boat jumble circuit really comes alive.

Diary Dates

The month kicks off with the West Midlands boat Jumble on 5 February at The Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire. This wellestablished show is held inside the agricultural sheds and is a guaranteed all-weather day out. Look out for two of the country’s top fishing tackle dealers and antifouling galore. a week later on 12 February you could try the Notts & Lincs boat Jumble, another indoor/outdoor event held at the Notts & Lincs Showground in

Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. It’s a firm favourite with coastal and inland waterways enthusiasts; the modern George Stephenson Pavilion ensures an enjoyable day of bargain hunting rain or shine, while outside second-hand boats and trailers are in abundance.

Finally for February on Sunday 26th, make your way to the essex boat Jumble at ardleigh Showground near Colchester.

This popular event is attended by large numbers of east coast and essex-based sailors, where a large contingent of private sellers are usually seen, so if you’re on a tight boating budget this is the show for you. also worth a quick mention for our Welsh readers is the Cardiff boat Jumble held on 4 March at County Hall car park on atlantic Wharf, Cardiff bay. This event is run by volunteers from Sully Sailing Club to raise funds for new projects.

Outboard motors and trailable fishing boats are often to be found at this venue; check it out for some great deals.

Conwy Marina NORTH WALES

A STUNNING APPROACH

Approached from the land, Conwy Marina is one stop after the road tunnel under the river and one A55 junction past the old train spotters’ Mecca of Llandudno Junction.

From the sea, the approach is stunning with a backdrop of Llandudno’s Great Orme and the Penmaenbach mountains to port.

CONWY is a medieval walled town, its Castle built during Edward’s campaign of 1283. Mediaeval walls encircle the town and are preserved in their entirety. More than three quarters of a mile in length they provide lovely walks and fine views of the harbour and across to Deganwy.

Conwy town is packed with ‘finest surviving’ monuments. From Edward’s castle to the 16th century Elizabethan ‘great mansion’ of Plâs Mawr; from the 14th century merchant’s home of Aberconwy House (locally believed to be the oldest town house in Wales) to the ‘smallest house in Wales’ on the quayside.

Conwy Morfa provided the site for the building of Britain’s first ‘immersed

tube’ road tunnel. This project required huge 30,000 ton concrete sections to be fabricated in a gigantic hole, 70ft deep, dug out of Conwy Morfa itself. When the tubes were completed, the bank was breached, the tubes floated out into position, sunk and pumped dry.

The hole, after much debate, became Conwy Marina – now known as Conwy Quays Marina. In 2004 the derelict harbour at Deganwy was dredged, refurbished and turned into Deganwy Quay Marina. Owned by the Crown Commissioners, it is managed by Conwy Quays Marina.

There are also a lot of swinging moorings and a couple of long pontoons managed by Harbourmaster Tony Mead.

These are much nearer the town than the marina, but are disconnected from land and are subject to some fierce tides.

BERTHING AND FACILITIES

Conwy Quays Marina belongs to Quay Marinas, which means that berth holders can enjoy free berthing in any of the other marinas in the group, including Deganwy Quay Marina, across the river. Both marinas are manned 24 hours and both are accessed via drop sills, which open about local HW ±3hrs.

FACILITIES Conwy Marina boasts a 30 ton hoist, fuel, WiFi (via BT Openspace), storage ashore, holding tank pump out and all the repair services you could wish for. TJ Rigging,

You can have the boat valeted inside and out, the engine repaired or replaced and there’s a water taxi to Conwy town.

TIDES Conwy: HW -0016/0000 Dover Standard port Holyhead (though the locals all use Liverpool HW+0015/ +0021 Dover).

ENTERING CONWY

WPT: 53°17’.97N 003°55’.56W (FAIRWAY BUOY) The approach from the north takes you east of Puffin Island and east of Dutchman Bank. Alternatively, towards the top of the tide, it is possible to pass through Puffin Sound and cross the Dutchman. From the southwest and the Menai Strait, Penmaen Swatch offers a safe, if character testing, passage with deep water in the channel and steepsided sand banks to either side.

From the Fairway buoy and C2, the channel is well buoyed and must be followed closely.

With up to 5kn of tide in the approach, careful pilotage is necessary to avoid being swept past the entrance to the marina. Watch for Beacons Jetty to starboard – the marina entrance opens up soon past it.

It can be a long, wet haul from the river to Puffin Island, which has to be made when there is water on Dutchman Bank with a potential for short, sharp seas.

But once past Puffin Island the whole of Anglesey is open for weekend stopovers.

The east coast, with Dulas, Moelfre and (for shallow draught yachts) Red Wharf Bay, all offer protected anchorages. A very prompt departure from Conwy once the sill drops may get you round Lynas.

However, 5kn tides along the north coast mean that the destinations for a weekend away are determined by the tides rather than by time and distance.

Porth Wen is about as far as you can reasonably expect to go on a tide, which makes for some imaginative cruise planning.

The Conwy channel buoys are all lit and are mostly within two cables of each other. Thus a Friday night exit is not a major problem. Rest overnight at Moelfre and it is off to Holyhead the following morning, timing the tidal gate at Carmel for LW slack.

From Holyhead, the tides are still in control for passages to Ireland, the Isle of Man, or past Bardsey Island to South Wales. Headed south, however, few yachts will take the north coast.

Everybody goes through the Swellies, passing under Menai Bridge exactly two hours before HW Liverpool. In very calm weather and with a shallow draught there may be sufficient water to cross Caernarfon Bar on the same tide, but since its tide is about an hour earlier than the tide at Menai Bridge, it is usually better to enjoy Caernarfon by spending the night at Victoria Dock or at anchor at Aber Menai.

Once clear of the Bar, Ireland opens up to starboard and South Wales is dead ahead.

Based in landlocked Sheffield, Richard and Sue Forder explain why they choose to keep their Moody 36 at Conwy: “Conwy is easy to reach by rail and is close to the motorway network.

“There are lots of local walks around Conwy itself; the nearby mountains are stunning and it is not far to Snowdonia.

“In the rain, we take the bus to Llandudno with its theatres, shops and historic buildings The bus service is very good, with services to Caernarfon, Snowdonia and up the Conwy valley. In periods of especially foul weather, we buy a Bus Rover for £5 a day and just let it take us places.”

WHERE TO SHOP

The marina has a chandler on site, just metres from the high security gate. Twenty minutes walk, or a few minutes by the marina’s water taxi, Conwy town is one of those olde-fashioned places with specialist butchers, aromatic bakeries and greengrocers with their produce on display. There’s a Tesco a little further away in Llandudno Junction, while a trip to Llandudno opens up the opportunities.

The Mulberry pub is on-site and offers good food in pleasant surroundings. Just down the road, Signatures restaurant in Aberconwy Park is a little gem. Reward an early morning walk into town with breakfast at Clemence.

WHAT TO SEE

Within walking distance of the marina there are enough castles, stately homes, gardens and sites from pre-history, not to mention the Welsh Mountain Zoo, to keep most people occupied during the longest spell of bad weather.

Plas Mawr, a 16th century ‘Great Hall’ is one of the best preserved Elizabethan houses with the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA) Art gallery nearby.

The Cambrian Gallery opens year-round with exhibitions that change at (roughly) fortnightly intervals. Conwy Castle is simply a great place to wander around, climb over and admire. Gwydir Castle, set within a Grade I listed, 10-acre garden, is a short ride up the Conwy Valley.

Built around 1500, it was extended c1600 and again in 1826.

5 miles at up the Conwy Valley at Tal-y-Cafn, Bodnant Gardens claims to be one of the finest in the world, with 80 acres. Dating back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age, the nearby mines are thought to be the largest prehistoric mines discovered in the world.

Three great orange liqueurs CURAÇAO, Cointreau and Grand Marnier are three great orange-based liqueurs, once very fashionable, now hardly known to the younger generation in our local sailing club. But my ski group tasting panel votes them better than brandy for après ski and likewise for a post-sail pickme-up. They’re more warming and the sugar (they justify) provides energy for the sport in hand. I doubt if there is any scientific evidence for this but if it works for them, let it be…

The technical definition for a ‘liqueur’ is sweet alcoholic beer, often flavoured with fruit, herbs, spices, flowers, seeds, barks and sometimes cream. The name comes from the Latin - ‘liquifacere’ meaning ‘to dissolve’ and they were around in the 13th century, brewed by monks and consumed at treaty-signing ceremonies in the Middle Ages.

The great liqueur brands that we know today were mainly invented in the 19th century.

The orange liqueurs began as sweet Valencia oranges which were carried by Spanish settlers to Curaçao and Aruba in the Caribbean around 1500 as food stock.

The oranges fared badly in the local soil and climate, becoming inedibly bitter, and so were abandoned as a crop, left to grow wild and locally become renamed as ‘Larahas’.

EXOTIC ORIGINS

In the 1890s, the Senior family, emigrants to Curaçao from Spain, found something to do with them which continues to this day. First the orange is crushed and the peel dried to concentrate the fragrant natural oils, then steeped in neutral alcohol. The peel is removed and the liquid distilled again, in a copper still that has been in use since 1896. Finally, a secret recipe (of course) of spices is added. The result is ‘Curaçao’, a virtually clear liquid with a lovely bitter-sweet orange flavour at a modest 38 percent abv.
