THE Yacht Harbour Association has recognised 79 marinas worldwide in 2011 with its Gold Anchor Award Scheme. The voluntary-assessment scheme, which was established 23 years ago, recognises the quality and level of facilities and services provided to boat owners and has become a trustworthy measure of excellence. Amongst the award recipients was Jersey Marina, which received the prestigious 5 Gold Anchors for the
seventh consecutive year. Other 5 Gold Anchors recipients include Chichester Marina, Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne and Plymouth’s Mayflower Marina. Poole Quay Boat Haven and the Port of Poole Marina were delighted to upgrade their awards from 4 Gold Anchors in previous years to five in 2011. Inland marinas, Upton Marina and Stourport Marina, both on the River Severn received 4 Gold Anchors, as did Castlepark Marina in Kinsale, Ireland.
destined to take line honours, crossing the finish line in Antigua in an elapsed time of 2 days 2 hours 39 minutes and 32 seconds. The monumental ketch was well outside the record time set by Rambler 100 last year; however the international team aboard Hetairos were all smiles as they were greeted by well-wishers and a cacophony of horns from megayachts in Falmouth Harbour. Hetairos were pushed hard all the way by George David’s 90ft maxi, Rambler. It was not until half way through the race that Hetairos managed to pass Rambler. The all star American team put in a fantastic performance but could not match the pace of an opponent over twice their size. George David said: “It was great to get back in the saddle for a 600-mile race after the Fastnet and to hold out so long against Hetairos.” Niklas Zennstrom’s JV72, Rán was the next yacht home, less than an hour behind Rambler to claim the overall win
after time correction. Rán’s owner and principle helmsman, Skype-founder, Niklas Zennstrom looked tired but full of joy after completing a race that he has wanted to do for some time: “The whole of Team Rán have been looking forward to this race for a while. A few of the crew have done the race before but it has been somewhat new territory for us, which is always exciting. It is a complex course, more like a series of coastal races. The close reach down to Guadeloupe from St. Barths was very memorable, fast reaching conditions in beautiful surroundings, some of the best sailing you can imagine.” Also gracing the race course was Peter Harrison’s 115ft ketch, Sojana and Gerhard Andlinger’s 124ft sloop, Team P2; the two magnificent superyachts were taking part in their first ever offshore race against one another. Jules Verne record holder, Brian Thompson, was also racing, with friends on Spirit of Juno, Ondeck’s Farr 65.

A pAir of British rowers has become the first modern day, independent oarsmen to row nonstop from Agadir, Morocco to port St Charles in Barbados in their 23ft rowing boat Atlantic Calling. David Whiddon and lloyd Figgins have used the adventure to raise money for the rNli and are now the 20th pair to have rowed across the Atlantic east to west as part of the rowing challenge.

diAry dAtes WitH the ice and snow having melted away and the temperatures soaring, the sailing season lies temptingly around the corner, bringing with it the promise of a bumper mix of events in 2012. it seems as if the whole country will be taking to the water over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend, as clubs and organisations take advantage of the bonus bank holiday to run additional events. At the centre of all this will be the special thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, which will see one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river, with 1000 boats of all sizes thronging the thames and showing off in front of some 30,000 shoreside spectators. this early summer weekend’s overdose of sailing activity should spur on enthusiasm for the usual summer line up, including of course Cowes Week, Round the island Race and hundreds of championship events and regatta weeks scattered throughout July and August. And then of course comes the event to top all events: the 2012 Olympic Games. even though only a handful of Britain’s elite dinghy sailors will actually get to take part, there’s no doubt that the British sailing public will be behind our Olympians as they battle for medal victory on the waters of Weymouth and Olympic fever inevitably grips the country. the RYA is hoping to capitalise on this once-in-a-lifetime event, using the Games as a springboard to increase participation in boating with a special Push the Boat Out event, running nationwide just before the Games commence. Clubs and centres across the country are being encouraged to run a special weekend of activities to entice sailors new and old onto the water, with a
real family focus; a great initiative. And just when you thought you might have a free weekend left somewhere this season, think again. All this on the water activity is being complimented by a scattering of shows covering all boating interests. it starts of course with the RYA Dinghy Sailing Show in early March, a whirlwind weekend that unites dinghy sailors from around the country in an annual pre-season showcase of new dinghies and kit. Anyone who likes their sailing diluted with a dose of other outdoor activities, should check out the freeto-attend inaugural Outdoors Show at WPNSA on 31 March. Powerboat enthusiasts can look forward to May and the new-look RiBeX, now named the Suzuki Powerboat and RiB Show, being held for the first time at Gunwharf; whilst a brand new free festival, the Boat & leisure Festival, is being organised at Cowes. With sail boats, motor yachts, accessories and fashion wear all on display, it is designed to appeal to sailors of all sorts – that is if they’re not already out on the water; yes, you’ve guessed it; this is yet another event that’s scheduled for the Jubilee bank holiday! But it does include one exhibit that’s sure to get powerboat racing enthusiasts through the gates: an exclusive preview of teams racing in the Cowes – Monte Carlo Powerboat Race, which is a worldclass event planned for 2013. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, one season at a time! When they say it’s going to be a great year for British boating, it’s not just about the Olympics. 2012 looks like an exciting year to be on and around the water, not to mention a busy one; best get your diary organised now… Otherwise you could run the very real risk of finding yourself double booked!

Clubs offered ex-Olympic RIBs THIS summer, RIBCRAFT will be providing over 50 boats for official use during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, after which approximately half will then be made available for re-sale at extremely competitive rates. The HMRC requirement has been made following a challenge by the European Commission to the UK practice of allowing marked red diesel with full duty paid in private pleasure craft. RYA CHALLENGES HMRC THE RYA has issued advice to boaters following the recent HMRC announcement that, as of 1 April, anyone purchasing red diesel for use as fuel for propelling private pleasure
at the RYA, says: “There is nothing in the government’s proposals that would actually make the use of marked ‘red’ diesel for propelling a private pleasure craft outside UK waters unlawful. However, what it is attempting to do is to make recreational boaters sign a declaration acknowledging a legal situation that doesn’t exist under UK law.” In any case, the new declaration does not change the permitted usage of red diesel within UK waters; red

ENTRIES for the Rolex Swan Cup are now officially open for 2012. Held every two years since 1984, the world famous yacht racing regatta sits at the pinnacle of the Nautor’s Swan calendar, attracting Swan yachts from the across globe to congregate for seven days of sailing and socialising at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Sardinia. ONDECK RESCUES STRANDED HOT LIQUID CUSTOMERS
NEW OWNERS AT OBAN THE 115 berth Oban Marina on the west coast of Scotland has been purchased by new owners. The newly formed Oban Marina & Yacht Services Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North Ledaig Co Ltd. Sue Deacon who has managed the marina, with a staff of seven for five years, will continue in the hands-on role of director of operations, with new directors Peter Weir as chairman, wife Katy as company secretary, and son Tim as development director.
COASTWATCH PASSES
THE third annual inspection of the National Coastwatch Station at Gosport was recently carried out on behalf of HM Coastguard. Duty Volunteer Watchkeepers were put through exercises testing reactions to coastal emergencies. The examining team was more than satisfied that NCI Gosport provides a high standard of visual surveillance across the Eastern Solent and Portsmouth Harbour.
GALLANTRY MEDALS
THE RNLI Silver Medal for Gallantry - one of the RNLI’s highest honours - is to be awarded to Dungeness RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew member Garry Clark following his exemplary bravery during the rescue of seven people from the yacht Liquid Vortex on 3 January. A bronze medal is to be presented to Exmouth crew volunteer Roger Jackson for the rescue of four people from a capsized powerboat last October. For more, see page 11.

THE Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy has announced a busy calendar for the Olympic year. Forthcoming highlights for March and April include BBC Sport Relief events in collaboration with SailLaser, and the inaugural WPNSA Outdoor Show, featuring a diverse range of outdoor and adventure activity companies, plus taster sessions.
Tall order for Fat Face
THE Fat Face Foundation, the charitable arm of the clothing company Fat Face, has sponsored a new sail each for Lord Nelson and Tenacious, which are the only tall ships in the world designed to be sailed by mixed crews of able-bodied and disabled people including wheelchair users. The two ships are operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a charity whose
mission is to enable people to take part in tall ship sailing whatever their level of physical ability. Lord Nelson has 18 sails and Tenacious has 21, all of which get considerable wear and tear as the ships are operated all year round. The Fat Face Foundation seeks to work with organisations that enable people to actively enjoy the outdoors and respect the environment. Rachel Follett, Director
and Trustee of the Foundation said: “Sponsoring these sails fits perfectly with our ethos. It’ll be fantastic to think that the sails will be out there crossing oceans and helping to change the lives of people with a variety of disabilities.” Lord Nelson is currently in the Canaries and Tenacious is in the Caribbean. Both will return to Southampton in May when the new sails will be ready.
THE RYA has removed its recognition of Hot Liquid Southampton as a provider of RYA training courses following three serious safety related incidents involving the company between January 2011 and January 2012. In the meantime, Ondeck Maritime Training has agreed to honour all bookings made with Hot Liquid Southampton. The agreement was reached following detailed discussion between Hot Liquid and Ondeck’s management, and comes as welcome news to disappointed Hot Liquid clients. The courses will be delivered through Ondeck’s Gosport based training centre. Hot Liquid Gibraltar will retain RYA recognition for all disciplines currently on offer due to the fact that the operational safety management routines of that site are controlled separately to that of the Southampton site.
Awards open for EUROPEAN OPENING exceptional youngsters NOMINATIONS are now open for MDL’s Sail Training Awards, designed to recognise, reward and challenge youngsters who have shown exceptional accomplishments and qualities that have inspired or supported others. This year’s six award winners will experience an unforgettable sailing experience on board the Ocean Youth Trust South’s training yacht John Laing, sailing from Plymouth in July. For some, it will be their first time on a boat; they will be involved in all aspects of sailing. Since launching over 20 years ago, the
awards have rewarded more than 130 young people, aged between 12 and 18. Past winners have included young people who have been outstanding achievers, as well as those who have been involved in voluntary work, those who have never had the chance to travel abroad, and those with added family responsibilities. Winners will be selected from the regions in which MDL Marinas are located; the South West, Dorset, Hampshire, Thames Valley and East Coast. What should sink in Room 101? WATCHING Room 101 on TV I found myself wallowing in mixed emotions. I could gladly pull the lever to send golf down the shute to the mythical room for outcast people or things – unless a Brit or an Irishman (or woman) is winning one of the majors. Camping, and especially those new fangled tents that go up in a trice but are impossible to put back in the bag, should have started in 101. I could even accept host Frank Skinner’s idiosyncracies in his choice of elements destined for the not-wanted-on-voyage department. After all, as chairman of the show he is entitled, as is a skipper, to unlimited respect for ultimate wisdom. It was that thought that got me musing about all those boating gremlins that deserve to be sunk without trace. And thinking brings back the anger... As a yotty I am bound to have high on my list those motor-boaters who, without thinking, pass by too close at full chat. It might be different if for once they could glance back behind them to see the mayhem their wakes can cause. I might be more inclined to forgive if they did it on purpose! Other yotties can be a pain too. What are they thinking about when they insist on standingon when their own knowledge and experience must tell them you may have a problem? Surely they know you are not gettng out of their way for some good reason, rather than because you don’t want to or that you don’t know the rules of the road. I recall one skipper at the end of a Round the
Island Race who became ridiculously shirty when the wind vanished and several hundred boats, including his own, were pointing in various directions at the mercy of the tide sweeping us all over the line. However many times he shouted starboard, we had no way of avoiding a collision. There was a gentle meeting of toe rails but that was sufficient to send him into a rage. The consequences were first that he yelled a protest into the VHF and, second, that his red-faced anger caused him to lose concentration and hit the outer finishing mark. Not only were we disqualified but, having hit the buoy, he retired! All quite proper but if he had remained calm in face of the inevitable, lit a cigar and hummed a pleasant tune, no-one would have noticed in the chaos. We would both have had a finishing time and his would have been a tad earlier than ours. In another island race I recall a crew who entertained us with a fusilade of unthinking abuse aimed at their own helmsman when their bow made forcefull head-on contact with the Bembridge Ledge buoy. You might have thought the poor helm was guilty of leaving the pub without buying his round, or even hitting the buoy on purpose. His colleagues’ fury did not subside until he held his tiller high in the air to show that it had broken off yards from the buoy, leaving the boat out of control. As they say, strange things can happen at sea... Let me know what you would consign to Room 101 – and don’t mention know-itall columnists!

THE race course area for the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco has been revealed. Stretching along to the Golden Gate Bridge and tucked between Alcatraz and the city shoreline, the race course offers up-close viewing from any number of locations along the city front. Elite action at the Squadron
THE Royal Yacht Squadron is playing host to the RS Elite National Championships this summer, which will run from 30 August to 2 September as part of the prestigious RYS summer programme. Top Elite sailors, including defending 2011 champion Jono Brown and 2010 victor Crauford McKeon, will be amongst those in the hunt for the trophy. Headline sponsorship has been secured

A rescue with the exe factor
The RNLI Bronze Medal for Gallantry is to be presented to exmouth crew volunteer Roger Jackson (43) following the rescue of four people from a capsized powerboat last October. The award recognises Roger’s exemplary command and leadership, boat-handling skill and tenacity in
exceptional conditions. The story unfolded late in the afternoon on 23 October 2011 when reports came in of people in the water after a RIB capsized in the River exe estuary. Knowing four people were in the water and in immediate danger, it was decided to launch the exmouth RNLI D
class inshore lifeboat despite a near-gale force onshore wind from the south east. RNLI volunteers Roger Jackson (helm), Mark Champion and Andrew Williams launched the lifeboat through surf of a metre and a half. As the three lifeboat crew reached the main part of the channel, they were immediately battling

harsh conditions. At one stage they had to work hard to keep the lifeboat upright, while Roger Jackson negotiated the safest route possible, using the lifeboat’s full engine power to climb the face of very large waves. Within minutes, the volunteers caught sight of the casualties through the wind driven spray. All four were clinging on to the top of the RIB. They were in danger of become separated from the boat and lost in the dangerous, confused and large seas. Roger Jackson manoeuvred into position around 5 metres from the casualties so he could make voice contact with them. he told them to swim to the lifeboat one at a time each time he took the lifeboat past. On each approach, Roger had to time his passes accurately so each casualty started their swim while the boats were between wave crests. With his timing critical to the success of the rescue operation, Roger repeatedly turned the inshore lifeboat to run downsea to commence each run and he and his crew recovered the casualties one at a time. The casualties were pulled from the sea into the lifeboat by crew volunteers Mark Champion and Andrew Williams. Mark and Andrew were also using their weight to keep the lifeboat stable and upright. All four of the people rescued were very

shaken and cold, but otherwise unhurt. Roger beached the lifeboat high onto the sand so the casualties could be treated ashore by paramedics. This was achieved just 24 minutes after the lifeboat had first launched. Nigel Jones, RNLI Deputy Divisional Inspector for the south west, said: “Roger’s skill, tenacity and decisiveness under pressure ensured the timely rescue of all four casualties. his impressive boathandling skills under such exceptional circumstances are particularly worthy of note. “I must add praise for Mark Champion and Andrew Williams who played a vital role in ensuring the incident was dealt with in a professional and speedy manner.” Mark and Andrew will receive the Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum for their role.

UPGRADING YOUR BOAT’S INTERIOR
SAILAWAY – HOW TO ESCAPE THE RAT RACE AND LIVE THE DREAM
WHEN it comes to boat interiors, I’ll keep it tidy, repair anything if broken and I’ve even updated a little upholstery. Beyond that, I’d never really considered that there was a great deal more that could be done. I thought that to have a modern looking, bright, airy interior on a 70s or 80s sailing cruiser was just beyond economic sense; that if it’s important to have a modern, more attractive interior, you basically need to buy a modern, more attractive boat. This is where this book was a revelation. Flicking through its pages, I was suddenly struck by the wonders that a bit of simple joinery and sewing could work. Your taste might not chime exactly with the author’s; however, I’d imagine most readers would find at least one of the interior projects in this book would suit their tastes. THE PRACTICAL SKYWATCHER’S HANDBOOK MOST sailors are fascinated by constellations. This book charts every constellation in the northern and southern hemisphere and features 150 maps, charts and diagrams. It also has interesting info on the formation of planets and galaxies. THIS guide comes full of all sorts of useful advice from pointers on routes to take, what boat to select, you name it, it’s all in here. Of course, it has to work on the initial assumption that you know very little of sailing, so some of the stuff is a bit superfluous, but nevertheless, it’s clear that Nicola has been living the dream herself for many years and is therefore in a good position to pass on a bit of wisdom on the subject. BUYING A YACHT – NEW OR SECOND HAND THIS is a fairly straightforward account of what to look for when buying a boat, with plenty of nice big pictures along the way. For those with a limited knowledge of yachts who want to be walked through the basics then this is a good guide. Perhaps the
big selling point this book has is that it is aimed only at sailing yacht buyers so can go into a good deal of detail, whilst motor boaters can pick up its companion copy ‘Buying a Motorboat’ which has also just been released. Author: Barry Pickthall • Price: £14.99

racing awards WE’RE all now busy gearing up for the 2012 season, but there was just one final formality from 2011 to be dealt with before we could really push forward to the season ahead - the 2011 RYA Powerboat Racing Awards ceremony. So, on 4 February, 350 powerboat racers, families, friends and sponsors descended on the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton to see the 2011 powerboat racing champions crowned. I was honoured once more to cohost the awards ceremony with RYA Powerboat racing manager, John Puddifoot. It was great to be able to meet so many outstanding people and share their achievements with everyone. On the evening itself, we recognised the achievements of Britain’s World, European and British Champions we also gave praise to the World and British speed records that were set in 2011. There was lots to celebrate! The evening was sponsored by the organisers of the 2012 Round Britain
Race – www.RB12.com - who joined us for the celebrations and announced a new sponsor for the race; Saxo Capital Markets, a specialist in online trading and investment, has come on board for the unique endurance event taking place from 21-30 June. John and I were also joined on stage by Geoff Holt MBE, who introduced new charity, the Disabled Powerboat Trust. As a founding ambassador, Geoff explained the ethos of the charity and its mission to make powerboating accessible to all. It’s a hugely worthwhile cause, and one which I am very proud to be a trustee of.
IN THE LIMELIGHT
There were far too many outstanding achievements in 2011 for me to tell you about them all, but there were some particular highlights... Young Ben Jelf had to be helped by uncle Owen Jelf and his dad Colin (both former world champions themselves) when he took to the stage, as he quite

simply had too many trophies to carry himself. I would need the whole page to list Ben’s achievements this year – let’s just say he is a world champion at age 11; do you know how jealous I am of him?! Meanwhile the Guernsey boys, John Richardson and Tom Sauvarin, received praise for their 3B World Championship title and were awarded the Anne Robinson Trophy for Most Successful
Newcomers. The Offshore Sponsors Trophy was awarded to Peters & May, which was recognised for its continuing support of the sport through its racing programme which enables the company to give back to the sport. Through its sponsorship and logistical support, it means teams are able to invest further in their racing efforts by leaving their transport to professionals.

To top off a fantastic night, Circuit Racing’s Susan Keay was honoured by being announced as the 2011 RYA Powerboat Racing Tony Needell Award recipient, recognising Susan’s years of dedication and support in the sport. The party lasted until the early hours, where memories were recalled and gauntlets for the 2012 season were thrown down. Bring it on!

Sail For Gold in 2012 Our Sporting Life’ Olympic memorabilia exhibition begins its UK tour.
Whether you live in Llandudno, Lichfield, Largs or Lowestoft, the rYA’s Sail for Gold programme aims to bring London 2012 to your doorstep. With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing regattas taking place at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy this summer it would be all too easy for the rest of Britain’s sailing community to feel unconnected from events unfolding on the south coast. But with the Games presenting such an enormous opportunity to put the sport of sailing on the map across the country and recruit new converts into our sport, Sail for Gold provides a nationwide framework of ways for everyone to get
involved in special Olympic-themed activities to really make the London 2012 sailing events a truly nationwide spectacle. Under the banner of ‘Inspire Celebrate Support’, Sail for Gold was launched in March 2011 and since then more than 500 clubs and centres across the whole of Britain have signed up to the programme to start nudging people in their local communities about what opportunities there are to learn to sail and windsurf, and continue participating regularly, in their areas. Some simply held special Sail for Gold regattas, some hosted Sail for Gold-themed free Open and taster Days and some ran special ‘bring a friend for free’ days. Lots has been going on!

But with the clock striking midnight to welcome in the year of the London 2012 Games, that opportunity instantly magnified tenfold. As Celia edgington, the rYA’s Sail for Gold co-ordinator, explains: “Sail for Gold is all about Britain’s sailing community coming together and showing the rest of the country just how amazing and inclusive the sport of sailing is. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to do this. “Britain has been the world’s top performing sailing nation for the past three Olympics and hopes are high that our sailors can once again shine at Weymouth and Portland. We want to use this success to inspire people throughout the country to get out on the water for the first time, or simply more often, to make a nationwide statement about what it really means to be an active, regular sailor or a member of a vibrant, friendly sailing club.”

When an angler had an accident and became a wheelchair user, he and his friend were determined to find a solution to get back him on the water. That was in 1984 - they had no idea how their solution would change boating for wheelchair users in the UK. 28 years later, the Wheelyboat Trust they formed, now boasts 150 wheelchair accessible boats throughout the UK and is keen to expand still further. They have simple and clear charitable objectives, which is key to their success.

And whilst the original concept was to enable angling, and that remains the core usage of Wheelyboats to this day, many groups are now using Wheelyboats to provide a range of other water based activities such as sight-seeing, photography and bird watching.
INNOVATIVE CONCEPT
I spoke to their Director, Andy Beadsley, who explained: “The design criteria for the first Wheelyboat was quite straightforward really; a flat bottom boat with wheelchair access in the form of a drop-down, landing craft style bow. And the boats have remained pretty much the same ever since. The construction material of choice was then, and continues today, to be marine grade aluminium and, although there have been four modifications of the design since the original, they are all variations on the original theme. The boats have proved themselves safe and reliable workhorses, providing opportunities for thousands of disabled people to access the water.” Being flat bottomed, the standard 4

Propelled by small petrol or electric outboards, boats seat up to eight people. Newer designs even allow wheelchair users to helm the boat from their chair and allow for a degree of customisation by the end-users. In recent years, such has been the
demand, the Wheelyboat Trust has looked at additional boat designs whilst continuing to supply the traditional flat-bottomed aluminium boats. In conjunction with Coulam Boat Builders they have built more than a dozen 16ft GRP Wheelyboats for fishing on the Tweed and, in their first foray into inshore/coastal waters, they have teamed up with Sea Rover to build the Mk IV, a cross between a RIB and a pontoon boat. Still with its trademark landing-craft bow door, the Mk IV can take up to 12 passengers and carry a 100hp engine. The first Mk IV has been purchased by Bristol Sailability who will use the boat for delivering RYA training courses to wheelchair users. Other Mk IV’s are planned for Chichester Harbour and the River Tyne in South Shields. Andy continues: “The principal role of the Wheelyboat Trust is to help groups and organisations acquire Wheelyboats and it does this by helping raise funds to cover some, or all, of the costs of acquiring Wheelyboats. Funds for Wheelyboat projects and for day to day running costs mostly come from charitable trusts but sometimes local authority and lottery funds contribute. “A typical project with fully equipped Mk III Wheelyboat costs around £18,000. A Mk IV project is about £50,000. This year turnover of funds raised and boats supplied should top £250,000.
“As a charity, the biggest challenge we face is keeping our heads above water financially. There have been some difficult times but we are enjoying our busiest period since the Trust began and, for the last two years, income for day to day running costs has kept pace with expenditure. We have a good portfolio of Wheelyboat models that can be tailored to a variety of projects rather than a onesize-fits all solution and we also provide an excellent service; apart from our four Wheelyboat models our USP is the fundraising we undertake on behalf of venues and organisations to help them acquire Wheelyboats. “The costs of building Wheelyboats seem to be in a constant upward spiral and each new project requires more fundraising than the last. Aluminium is an excellent material but is expensive both in terms of raw material and factory costs to turn it into boats. However, a new aluminium model’s initial investment is considerably less than for plastic or GRP models. “Even though we have been operating for more than 25 years, we have barely scratched the surface of the potential for Wheelyboats in the UK and beyond. There is considerable scope for expansion and we would like to take on at least one more member of staff to augment our fundraising capabilities. The more funds we can generate the
more projects we can help.”
SUPPORT NETWORK
The Trust has spent most of its life ploughing a lone furrow but recent jointventures have revealed a more fertile land of opportunities. The Trust works to develop closer relationships, create joint initiatives and raise their profile within, and outside, the disability boating and angling sectors. “We are not an organisation that recruits members,” concludes Andy, “but we do have a network of supporters and we would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer for us. Have you checked your gear? IF you are going to be sailing in an area where the marinas are few and far between, it is important that you check your gear regularly. Here I recount another situation where I stepped on board a boat to help the owner check over a few key things before a trip to the West coast of Scotland. For a 17 year old boat she is in immaculate condition, but it was
important, all the same, to give her a thorough going over. The history of the rigging is not known and is currently being looked at. The engine has been given a complete service; the compass will be checked, as will the echo sounder. The log will be tested along the measured mile in Southampton Water (three runs, I hope, as near as possible to tide slack). The inventory is impressive
Carrying out regular checks and servicing will prevent little problems becoming big ones! with few items to be bought in; the sails are in good condition, running rigging looks good and all the woodwork is very well maintained.

We already looked last month at problems that can arise with anchors. Let’s take another look at this important
issue, using this further example. If you look carefully at this anchor/ chain/warp set up (photo 1), you can see that the previous owner has marked his chain with various coloured cable ties; note also that they are all pretty long. This suggests to me that the boat has not been anchored all that often, or the chain has been let out and taken in very gently. I used this method of chain marking on my boat and found that with plenty of use of the hook, not only did the cable tie ends break off, but also the marks were lost completely. So if you decide to use this method, you will need to check your chain each time you lay and weigh anchor. The other important point to note is the severe rusting of the anchor chain links where the warp has been spliced onto the chain. There is little you can do about this, except to keep a note of how heavy the rusting is. The rusting is caused by the retention of moisture in the warp when the anchor is weighed, and with wear on the links the dreaded rust takes a hold. As with your cable tie marks, you should be checking the build-up of rust on your join of warp to chain. Looking at photo 2 you see that the

anchor warp has been made onto the padeye in the chain locker. This is not the best way to set things up because if you have to jettison your anchor in a hurry (because, for example, it is caught in a rock or some other obstruction), cutting through that warp will need quite a few hacks with a really sharp knife. If the warp had been made on with half a dozen turns of a 2mm line long enough to reach up to and beyond the gypsy, one slash of the galley bread knife - if you did
not have a knife in your pocket - would cut that line. A fender could then be attached and when the situation gets better, you can come back to retrieve your anchor. Top tip: before you leave anchor chain and warp on the seabed, remember to press the man overboard button on your GPS and you will have an indicator to guide you back to your hook. Remember, regular checks will prevent little problems becoming big ones!

And it’s an asset that in time should see some capital growth as well. If your agent is an estate agent and a letting agent combined, and if they are worth their salt they should be advising you on when to sell, when to let and when to switch.

Sales volume is currently around 50 percent down on 2007 sales at the peak of the pre-crash property boom, and prices are also down by up to 25 percent in some locations, with a larger proportion of sales going through at under the £250,000 3 percent stamp duty hike. Sales of waterfront property around the £1 million mark are obviously fewer in number, but their market remains relatively unaffected. Those in between are finding it most difficult at the moment. New developments (an indicator of a buoyant economy) are still rare on the waterfront, as builders bide their time. Crest Nicholson’s Centenary Quay in Woolston, Southampton, and Berkeley Homes Royal Clarence Yard in Gosport are currently leading the way.
There is at last talk at least of the final phase in Ocean Village, Southampton, and the potential of further development in Port Solent near Portsmouth. Plans for the waterfront in Poole adjacent to the new Holes Bay Bridge also look amazing; these promise the waterfront a muchneeded injection of new housing stock and fresh interest for waterside lifestyle enthusiasts. There is no shortage of ideas out there - it just needs the confidence to spark it all off.

I have heard many people talking about it for a long time now. Let’s be environmentally aware, lets live a sustainable lifestyle and all do our bit to help make a difference. Repeating the mantra ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ has made a difference to the refuse facilities in a huge number of marinas; however,
I still want to see the effort extended a little further. Finally there is firm commitment out there from some new sponsors in the world of ocean racing and it is extremely exciting. The rate that renewable energy technology is advancing makes it no surprise that this is possible; however, the media demands on the skippers and the safety requirements do require an awful lot of power so we will all be watching closely to see how this particular project progresses. With any luck, this could be a new environmental
bench mark for the sport of ocean racing. I may not be competing in this edition of the Vendée Globe but I am still committed to doing my part to live a sustainable lifestyle. I drive a hybrid car and love it. I have increased the number of bins at home to three, so we now recycle and collect compostable waste too, which is great for my garden veggies. Who knows – maybe this year I will have a bit more time to look after them all!

Single-handed, single-minded and going for gold PAUL GOODISON is the current Olympic Champion in the Laser class, having topped the podium with a gold medal in Beijing at the 2008 Games. Add to that a long list of World, European and National championship wins, and there’s no doubting that he has a huge depth of sailing talent. PAUL first caught the sailing bug when he trained with Ben Ainslie in preparation for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He got his own shot at Olympic glory in 2004 in Athens, but fell painfully short of the podium finishing in fourth place. Since then, his steely resolve has set in and he hasn’t looked back. With selection for 2012 well and truly
in hand, Paul has only one thing on his mind: getting the gold. Literally. When the medal race at the World Championships in December 2011 saw him slip to finish in fifth overall, he put it

But let’s face it, going for Olympic gold in the Laser takes a phenomenally tough sailor. Not only is it the most well-known Olympic sailboat of all, but as a single-handed class requires an unwavering determination and personal perseverance. Since the Worlds, Paul has bounced back to win gold at the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta, and has been training hard, particularly on his physical fitness – yet another element that is essential for success in this demanding class. When he lines his Laser up on the Olympic start line this summer, it’s not going to be an easy ride; but having sailed to gold four years ago, we know Paul has what it takes.

The Osprey Quay development will contain 84 houses and will be home to 700 athletes and 550 officials during the Olympic Games. Each house will accommodate around eight athletes. Heating and hot water for 58 of the homes comes from a biomass heating system and many of the houses are fitted with rainwater harvesting. Houses include all facilities except a kitchen; athletes will eat in a large dining hall which will be erected

Paul Goodison takes time out from his busy training schedule to tell us about his preparations for the 2012 Olympics. Name: Paul Goodison Age: 35 Class: Laser Sailing Club: WPNSA – Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy; started sailing at Ulley Sailing Club, Rotherham.

AAS: Describe yourself in three words? PG: Focused, determined and active. AAS: It must take extreme mental toughness to compete at Olympic level as a singlehanded athlete. What goes through your mind on race day, and how do you deal with extreme moments? PG: I just focus on the processes, analyse what happened, re-plan and learn from it. AAS: How did you feel when you heard you’d been selected for the 2012 Olympics? PG: It was a great feeling, but I was just really pleased to have the selections out of the way so I could fully focus on the Games.

LOCOG will take temporary ownership of the Sailing Village buildings during the Games period. In an official handover ceremony, Sir Keith Mills, Deputy Chair, LOCOG said: “The Sailing Village will be a fantastic facility for the athletes, but just as
importantly after the Games this will be a development with both affordable and low carbon housing on offer.” After the event, apartments will be converted into homes with 25% of the housing made available to a registered landlord for social housing needs.
AAS: What will be the most difficult thing about competing at Weymouth? PG: It will be hard avoiding distractions; with the Games in a different country you get away from everything. But, it will be amazing to compete in front of a crowd including family and friends on home waters there is nothing more exciting than winning at home. AAS: Are there any more major milestones in place for you to achieve between now and July 2012? PG: I have several process goals. The main milestone was qualifying and the next one is winning at the Games. Key events between now and the games are the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma at the beginning of April, the Laser Worlds in Germany at the end and the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, Weymouth, in June. AAS: You’ve just come back from a fantastic result at the World Series event in Miami; how will you tailor your training going forwards? PG: I have a plan which is flexible but results don’t change this. At this point,

with less than five months to go I am very focused on the processes rather than the results. AAS: Looking back, what has been the single biggest turning point in your sailing career? PG: Leaving university and taking sailing more seriously and professionally. AAS: What is it that has got you this far? PG: Determination and drive. AAS: If you had to take another person onboard your boat for the day, who would it be? PG: I would take my baby niece it would be cool to be the one to introduce her to sailing. AAS: Fav thing to do away from sailing? PG: Kitesurfing is my favourite. I’ve recently taken up golf too which helps me relax. AAS: Which car do you drive? PG: I currently drive a red Volvo V60 (D5 R-Design) – great road handling and sporty plus the colour reminds me every day of Sheffield United. My dream car would be a Ferrari 458!
BEN Ainslie CBE has been given the go ahead to compete at the 2012 Olympics after an RYA Tribunal decided not to impose further penalties on the triple Olympic gold medallist following his rule 69 infringement at the ISAF World Championships, held in Perth in December 2011. At the time of the incident, an international jury imposed a two-race ban, which forced Ainslie to miss out on the medal race and ultimately the World Championship win. The incident, which involved an altercation with a media boat on the race course, was then referred to the RYA as UK governing body; a less favourable decision at the Tribunal could have landed Ainslie with a two-year ban. The RYA’s decision comes as no big surprise, but is pleasing news nonetheless for Ainslie, who said: “I welcome the RYA Tribunal’s decision and am looking forward to fully focussing on my Olympic preparations.”

That’s really rubbish! These bottles will still be littering the shoreline in 450 years time.
Did you know that if you threw a coke can in to the sea it would take around 100 years to degrade? That’s 100 years of floating around in the water getting in the way of plants, wildlife and making the seas look dirty. BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS ‘DEGRADING’?
Well, in a nutshell when something degrades in the water it’s bombarded with lots of different elements; such as bacteria eating it, waves cracking and smashing it or the sun’s rays breaking it down. Over time - in the case of the coke can, 100 years - it will eventually disappear completely into thousands and thousands of tiny particles so you can’t see it anymore. Different things take different lengths of time to degrade, some taking more than 500 years! But do you know how long common bits of rubbish take to breakdown in the water, such as carrier bags, bottles, fishing line? See the chart opposite for some clues. So the best way to keep our waters nice and clean is to make sure that when you’re out and about on the water or around the seaside you throw all your rubbish away properly. Make sure don’t let anything blow overboard when you’re sailing, or leave anything in the water if you happen to capsize. Use rubbish bins, recycling points or just take it home with you.

shake-down The cold spell is over, we hope, and snowdrops and daffodils are poking through which can only mean one thing. Spring is coming and soon we can go boating again! However, you would not expect to be able to jump in your Porsche that has been stored in the garage all winter and go belting down the motorway without checking a few things? Well, probably not, but I don’t have a Porsche. Here is a summary of things to think about before venturing afloat for the first time during 2012...

ENGINE CHECKS
Most engine failures can be attributed to fuel problems, so the most important thing to do before taking your sailing yacht, motorcruiser, sportsboat or RIB out for the first time after the winter is to make sure that your fuel system is as good as it can possibly be. When winterising your boat, always drain down your fuel system if you have a petrol engine. Modern unleaded petrol does not last as long as the old leaded four-star; it quickly evaporates and turns into paraffin, clogging up your fuel injection system or carburettor if you have one. If you have a portable tank you could simply use up the petrol in your car. Saying that, many boat owners now run diesels on ordinary BSEN590 grade road diesel as many marinas have now gone over to this fuel and stopped selling red diesel. Road (white) diesel has to contain about 11 percent bio diesel by law. It
is said by some that the bio diesel is hydroscopic and can absorb water, causing condensation in the tank and leading to a build up of fuel-bug. Some say that road diesel is slightly acidic and can damage the seals in your fuel system, even cause corrosion in copper fuel pipes. However, if your engine was built after around 1998 then you should be fine as it was about then that bio diesel started to be added to fuel and so engine manufacturer’s started using tougher grade seals. So, if you have a small diesel tank it might be a good idea to drain it down and use the fuel in a car (as long as it’s duty-paid road diesel obviously). If emptying the tank is not practical then keep the tank full over the winter to reduce the likelihood of condensation forming on the top and sides of the tank above the fuel level. It is in these areas above the fuel where the micro fuel bugs thrive. When they die they fall into the
fuel and form a build up of sludge at the bottom of the tank and then will block up your fuel filters. The next stage of the fuel system service is to replace all the fuel filters. If you have a diesel engine you will probably have a coarse fuel filter with a water separator bowl that can be used for siphoning off water that has been absorbed into the diesel. Put an empty jam jar under the water bowl and open up the tap to drain off the collected water. Replace the fine fuel filter, which is normally fitted to the engine itself. You should also purchase several spare filters and keep them to hand on the boat as dirty fuel is sadly a commonlyfound problem. Next, replace the engine oil and oil filters. Oil can become acidic after time so change it as often as you can. By draining off the oil you will be able to check for emulsion, where water has been absorbed into the oil, turning it
white and cloudy. This can happen if your engine’s internal oil cooler corrodes, allowing water into the sump through leaking coolant water pipes. This can wreck an engine but can be prevented by properly winterising an engine before it’s put to bed. Get your engine serviced by a professional, that way you have a second pair of eyes looking over it and hopefully pointing out potential problems.

Tighten up belts, replace air filter and replace the often neglected coolant impeller. This brings me onto the next favourite cause of engine breakdown, the coolant system. The rubber raw water coolant pump impeller should be replaced at least once a year, more often if the engine is used a lot. It’s worth pointing out that fishermen often carry boxes full of impellers and fuel filters. The slightest bit of muck, twig or barnacle can rip the impeller to shreds and stop coolant water from being pumped around the engine. You should also practise changing the impeller yourself, even if you normally get your engine serviced by an engineer, so that you could do it easily whilst at sea in case you ever need to change it in an emergency. Charge up your batteries and make sure that they are properly strapped down.

SAILDRIVE AND STERN DRIVE SERVICE 2
THE saildrive or stern drive unit is probably the bit of your boat that’s going to cost you the most money! Servicing them is of paramount importance or you will be faced with costly bills. Same goes for the leg of your outboard. Change the oil in your drive leg according to manufacturer’s service schedule and check the level as often as you can. Look for emulsification which could indicate that water has got into the oil through leaking seals. Doing this on a Volvo leg is easy as you have a nice big dipstick on top of the leg but you will need to buy a wide screw driver attachment for a socket wrench, as shown in the pictures. The rubber ‘bellows’ hoses on a stern drive prevent water from getting inside the drive shaft assembly and will cause a great deal of damage if they leak. The ‘bellows’ hoses should be replaced at least every second year but should be checked as often as you can. Prod them with your finger; they should be flexible and subtle and should not be cracked, stiff, perished

It’s very important to service your lifejackets. If you’re not sure how to do this take them into your local chandlery shop and ask for advice and a service kit. It’s important to replace the gas bottle and automatic firing sensor, plus check the automatic light. Fire extinguishers should be replaced when they are five years old and checked periodically as they can leak. You should have an automatic fire extinguisher in the engine compartment and a fire extinguisher in the cockpit and cabin near to the main hatch. Make sure that the VHF radio works by calling your local marina on channel 80 or the Coastguard on channel 67. Get yourself a horseshoe lifebuoy, foghorn, pack of distress flares and a first aid kit. Finally, check your anchor for corrosion and check that your anchor windlass works before you need to use it.

Sacrificial anodes protect your stern gear from dezincification. The zinc anodes give up electrons easily and erode quickly so as to protect the sensitive alloys of your aluminium, bronze and stainless steel stern drive or outboard leg. Without sacrificial anodes your precious propeller might well decay and you will quickly notice pitting to the aluminium gear box casing and corrosion on your stainless steel trim tabs.

Cleaning. Getting all that green crud and winter slime off everything. This includes gently cleaning the teak in your cockpit or on the deck. Then give your boat a nice polish.

Refit your covers such as bimini, sail cover and sprayhood etc.

Work all seacocks and check them for corrosion. Make sure that all flexible hoses are sound as they can split if water trapped in the hoses has frozen over the winter.

Check the horn, navigation lights and all electrical gear such as the VHF radio and conduct a radio check with a fellow boater or your local marina dockmaster;

Clean the fridge and ditch any old food inside lockers. Then empty and refill your water tank.
✔
Check the condition of flexible gas hoses and replace them if they are perished or if more than five years old.
✔
Check the condition of fire extinguishers and replace them too if more than five years old.
✔
Periodically check the condition of your mooring cleats, stanchion bases and chainplates. Make sure that they have not worked loose over the winter.
✔
Antifoul the hull before re-launch.
✔
Replace sacrificial anodes if necessary.
Check gas hoses for wear and age.
Ensure your safety equipment is functional and in-date.

ANTIFOULING
A fouled bottom will waste a great deal of fuel, add a lot of strain to the engine and slow down the boat. The best way to reduce fouling is to keep the boat out of the water for as much time as you can. A boatpark such as Parkstone Bay Marina in Poole is a godsend as your boat would be kept on a yard trailer, allowing you to clean it yourself but then it would be launched at short notice by a forklift. Dry stacks work in the same way but you can’t get to your boat so easily if it is four boats up in the air. Keeping your sportsboat or RIB on its own trailer at home saves on storage and protects from fouling in the same way. Keeping your stern drive out of the water with the boat ashore is also a great idea and saves on anodes and cleaning.
The best way to reduce fouling is to keep the boat out of the water for as much time as you can.

FRESH WATER SYSTEM
This past horrible long winter has played havoc with fresh water systems; even if you had the good sense to drain down your water tank your boat might well have suffered from split hoses. Sod’s law dictates that water leaks occur in hoses above the boats electrics. Gingerly fill up your tank and check for leaks before using the boat, as your calorifier water heater could be damaged if run dry. Turn off your 230-volt water heater until you are sure that your boat is free from leaks.

LAKE CRUISING AT ITS BEST
Think of Windermere and you think of rugged hills, ramblers, sheep and rustic country types leaning on drystone walls discussing the price of butter and the like. You’re in the heart of Beatrix Potter country and the lake is a beautiful ribbon of water situated in southern Cumbria.
It looks like a dead end, but turn hard to port and you’re in the marina.
AT 11 miles long and about a mile and a half at its widest, it’s the biggest lake in England. With the beautiful hills of the southern lakes towering over it and an archipelago of 18 islands to explore, this is any sailor’s paradise and has proven popular with leisure boaters for centuries. In recent years, boats have tended to be bigger and more numerous and Windermere Marina Village has grown in parallel. Originally little more than a small inlet where a handful of boats were stored, it has been rebuilt, dredged and expanded, so that it now offers 400 berths for boats up to 50ft. In addition to this, the marina is surrounded by holiday cottages that make up the marina village
and also boasts a boatyard and chandler on site in addition to a small convenience store. Visiting trailer sailers are always welcomed and you can pay £25 a night for a marina berth in the summer months. Windermere was once a haven for powerboaters, but following the controversial introduction of a 10kn speed limit in 2000, sailing is on the up. There is a popular cruising association and a range of racing events held throughout the year.

The marina is extremely sheltered, making berthing a relatively stress free affair, but watch out for other users, because the channels around the pontoon twist about a bit. If you’re keen to try your hand at a spot of lake sailing, prepare for a few surprises. It’s very different to sailing on the sea, where you can have a steady breeze all day; out on the lake, the wind tends to funnel down the valleys, leading to massive gusts and very localised wind conditions. After a while, you get used to them and learn to use them to your advantage. Experienced lake sailors will use the fetch of the lake and wind direction in order to decide on their cruising destination. If the wind is generally from the southwest, then head south for tranquil sailing, while the north end of the lake will have choppy conditions and bigger breezes. Obviously the opposite applies if the wind is in the north. Beyond this, it’s well worth taking note of the fact that the rocks and islands are unlit at night and that if you want to anchor and go to the pub, you’ll need to leave one person aboard. Alternatively, many of the hotels and pubs around the lake have public jetties, which you can tie up alongside.

Talking about cruising grounds on a lake may seem a little bit tricky, but Windermere has plenty of scope for exploration. Sailors seeking peace and tranquility should anchor in Pull Wyke nature reserve. No motoring is allowed within the confines of the reserve, so sailing boats can glide in under sail and drop anchor. Rawlinson Nab, a beautiful peninsula on the peaceful western side of the lake, features good shelter in prevailing southwesterly winds. A good alternative is High Wray Bay, which features a nice beach, ideal for a quick dip if you’re feeling adventurous. If you’re in search of civilisation, head to the northern tip of the lake and trek inland to Ambleside. The town is marginally less hectic than Bowness and features a pleasant range of cafes and restaurants.

What to see
the sights and attractions of the lake District need little introduction and there are more rambling opportunities around here than you can shake a walking stick at. the langdales nearby have always been well noted for a spectacular selection of hills and tarns, but in fairness, just step off your boat and start walking. You’ll find yourself somewhere beautiful fairly rapidly. If walking isn’t your thing and you’re bored by sailing, there are numerous other tourist attractions nearby. Bargain hunting in the snow YOU have to be a hardy soul to visit a boat jumble in the winter months as the UK’s fickle weather can play havoc with your nautical bargain hunting. February was no exception with snow and some of the lowest temperatures on record challenging the brave stalwarts who ventured out to the events. However the rewards can justify the hassle, as frozen stallholders eager to sell up and go home early often accept lower prices. Luckily the first three boat jumbles of the season were all held indoors at agricultural showgrounds, helping to ensure their ‘all-weather’ status. The Ardingly event at the South of England Showground experienced a All shows open to the public at 10am and usually run until 3pm. good turnout in the cold, whilst the West Midlands Boat Jumble at the Three Counties Showground Malvern reported some good sales despite continuous snow on the day! Finally, the Notts and Lincs Boat Jumble, with 4 inches of snow on the ground and overnight temperatures down to -14°C, attracted a bumper crowd of hardy Midlanders who spent enthusiastically on all things nautical, enjoying over one hundred indoors stands plus the offerings of a few dozen hardy exhibitors outdoors.

all weather affair being held indoors at the Kent Showground in Detling near Maidstone. A well-established event, one of the largest on the circuit; well-worth a visit with over 100 exhibitors usually in attendance.. For you hardy northerners the Northern
Boat Jumble on 18 March at Middlewich, Cheshire, is a traditional ‘old-school’ farmer’s field event with a 15 year history of serving up new and used marine bargains to Manchester and Liverpool’s finest boaters. Finally we move further south west to
the Dorset Boat Jumble on 24 March at Canford Park Arena near Poole. This is the only Boat Jumble Association event held in Dorset and, as such, attracts a big crowd of buyers and sellers from Dorset and its surrounding counties; well-worth a day out.

Italians worth knowing
Wines from the Alps to Sicily JUDGING from the sparse shelf space Italian wines get in our supermarkets, their attractions are much underrated by UK drinkers. This does not do justice to the genre. There is a whole spectrum of wine styles from within the one country to be enjoyed, worlds away from the old Chianti-in-a-basket souvenir. Italy is a distinctly long and narrow country. As a result, it is blessed with a diverse spread of climate, from the Alps in the north to the sunny ‘heel’ and Sicily in the south, and grapes and wine-making regions to go with it. The result is wide choice of wines to suit every occasion, palate and price. Another consequence is there are 20 official regions and a convoluted range of wine classifications, which might be a tad confusing but are worth sorting out. For help, look out for the Canaletto Autentico Italiano brand. This company offers under the one name wines from six of the most interesting regions Trentino, Veneto, Abruzzo, Sicily, Puglia and Oltrepò Pavese - authentic Italian wines it claims the Italians would drink themselves. The bottles are labelled with the regional names but, better still, there is a very useful map on the back to
show instantly where in the country that origin is without having to decipher the name on the front or get the atlas out.
REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Pinot Noir di Pavia is from Lombardy in the north of the country, quite delicate but full flavoured. Primitivo di Puglia, is a rich and velvety red from Italy’s most southern wine region. ‘Primitivo’ means ‘first’ and not ‘primitive’, and is thus named because the Puglia grapes used are the first in the year to be harvested, in late August. Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is a crisp white from the Veneto region which stretches northwards from Venice. With an appealing floral aroma and plenty of fresh fruit flavours, it is ideal on its own or with creamy pasta sauces and fish dishes. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is always one of my favourite Italians and you’ll find there are usually several different brands available. The Canaletto offering is rich and full flavoured, as Montepulciano should be. Muller Thurgau Trentino comes from the Trentino grapes grown in the foothills of the Alps. A fresh and lightly

perfumed white. Sicily produces some good wines and Canaletto’s soft and voluptuous Nero d’Avola Merlot di Sicilia is typical of the excellent reds of the Vittoria region in the south of the island. There is also a Canaletto Chianti and a Prosecco to complete the full house. Canalettos are not the cheapest on the shelf, expect to pay just over £7, but they are good, safe and distinctive enough to confidently take to a supper party. It is unlikely you will find all varieties in all supermarkets. I found Pinot Noir and Primitivo in one of my local stores and Pinot Grigio and Chianti in another so you will need to keep your eyes open for them. As you look you will find other Italians which individually or collectively cover the same regions; some at lower prices and very good buys. Previously I have featured the Montepulciano and the Primitivo varieties from the Italia brand
(elegant bottle with just the ‘I’ on it) which is quite widely available. There is also the reasonably priced Valpolicella de Veneto and Merlot de Veneto, both highly recommended for al fresco drinking. The brand has no name but the fun labels
