GOSPORT-based charity, Toe in the Water, has accepted the generous donation of the Farr 52 racing yacht, Bob, which has featured prominently on the racing circuit in recent years. The charity uses competitive sailing as a vehicle to re-inspire injured servicemen and women, and says the new addition will provide an ideal platform. The yacht’s current owners, Tony Hayward, Sam Laidlaw, and Rob Gray, have given the yacht to Toe in the Water and have personally pledged funds to

get her into tip top condition for the forthcoming season. The 52-ft (15.8-metre) carbon-fibre performance racing yacht will be used to provide injured service personnel, all of whom have been profoundly wounded, including loss of limbs, with the opportunity to sail competitively at the highest level. Working in partnership with Headley Court, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Toe in the Water will be able to accommodate a broader range of injuries following the acquisition.

Refusing to let go of the French team’s coat tails, PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG are around 30 nautical miles behind. Despite their narrow lead, Groupama had throttled back to preserve man and boat as the fleet saw classic Southern Ocean conditions of huge, confused seas and gale-force winds. Franck Cammas’ crew chose safety over speed to avoid breakages to their Volvo Open 70 as winds hit more than 35 knots and waves grew to around six metres. Four of the six-strong fleet have suffered

damage so far in the 6,700nm leg from Auckland to Itajaí and Groupama skipper Cammas said in the Southern Ocean, survival must come before speed. “We had to slow down during the night to nurse the boat and the men,” he said. “It’s more about surviving than racing. For sure it’s been the toughest week since the start of the race.” Despite taking their foot off the pace, Groupama was still hurtling along at an average of 21 knots. Meanwhile, Telefónica are around 300 miles behind the leaders as they nurse a damaged bow, with a pit-stop planned at the Argentine port of Ushuaia. CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand are less than 2,000nm from Puerto Montt in southern Chile where they will carry out

Despite being more than 1,300nm behind the leaders, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing are hopeful of making back some miles once they latch onto the strong westerlies typical of the Southern Ocean. ISAF evaluation trials for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition concluded recently at the Prince Felipe High Performance Sailing Centre, Santander, Spain. More than 40 sailors from 23 countries, including the UK, tested the six Women’s Skiffs (Hartley Rebel, Mackay FX, RS900, 29erXX, ARUP SKIFF, AURA) and seven Mixed Multihull boats (Tornado, Hobie Tiger, Hobie 16, Viper, Spitfire S, Nacra

F16, Nacra 17) that are aiming to become the selected equipment for the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition. As well as sailing the boats, sailors completed questionnaires and held debriefs with the Evaluation Panel. Considerations included general manoeuvres, performance around a course and capsize recovery. Members of the panel also met representatives from Altair, Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita. Also invited, but as yet unconfirmed, are Lulworth and Moonbeam IV. The Westward Cup is being run by an association of three of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS), the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) and the New York Yacht

The organisers have set out to replicate a style, class and regatta atmosphere matching the period when Westward and the Big Class yachts all raced during the 1920s and 30s. Where possible, courses will mirror those used by Big Class yachts in those glory days, with safe and gentlemanly racing being the priority. A ‘Round the Isle of Wight’ race may be

The key vantage points will be along the Cowes Parade below the RYS battlements and along Prince’s Green to the West. Strict on-water guidelines will be in place for spectator boats. In a unique move to encourage interest and experience in classic yacht racing, up to 30 young sailors aged between 18 and 23 are being hand-picked by the organising clubs, who will then underwrite the cost of participating for the youngsters.

LIVERPOOL City Council and Sail Training International will host the inaugural Irish Sea Tall Ships Regatta, which will see a fleet of international Tall Ships race from Dublin to Liverpool, leaving on 26 August. From 30 August to 2 September, an action-packed four days have been planned to welcome the crews. The Tall Ships are returning to Liverpool for the first time since 2008, when 450,000 visitors watched the fleet.

APRIL 2012

ALL ABOARD By Georgie Corlett

OLYMPIC WATERS TO SOUTHERN OCEAN AS news of yet more celebratory regattas marking the Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee fly in, the simmering expectation for a fantastic summer of sailing ahead has been notched up to a new level (‘eager anticipation’). Fuelled by bright sunshine and soaring temperatures, you might think summer was already here! Of course, as we head in to April, there’s still a long way to go yet (cue sighs of relief from event organisers around the country). But a recent trip to Weymouth proved that the Olympic sailing venue is taking no chances. The Academy building itself, together with the harbour, slipways, breakwater and pontoons, was the first of all the Olympic venues to be completed; now the focus is on the finishing touches. I noticed workers industriously occupied in painting fresh white lines along the promenade. A simple enough task in itself, perhaps, but it’s one symbolising years of meticulous planning, as the seaside resort and its freshly installed infrastructure brace for an unprecedented influx of visitors this summer. Let’s just hope that two new snack kiosks that have also been added to the seafront - designed to look like upturned boats - don’t have any particular symbolism! Once the amusement of, err, watching paint dry wore thin, I headed to WPNSA to a reception attended by media and organisations who had a vested interest in the Olympic sailing, but who are not necessarily sailors. It was gratifying to note how positively they reacted to the panorama of blue water and white sails that filled the windows of the

Academy building: Weymouth was indeed looking its finest. Meanwhile, there’s another stretch of water that has also been living up to reputation this month. As I write, the sailors of the Volvo Ocean Race are hurtling through the Southern Ocean’s freezingly formidable expanse, mid-way through the fifth of ten legs and about as far away from land as they could be on this race. Reports of breakages, injuries, forced pit stops and survival mode sailing make for unnerving reading, and beg questions as to whether these boats are up to the inevitable extremes of the Southern Ocean. But these are familiar questions; the last VOR raised eyebrows, as did the one before and the one before, no doubt all the way back to the first Whitbread of 1973-4. In a review of the rules governing the design and build of the boats for the 2011-12 race, changes were deliberately made to encourage greater structural reliability. The organisers have made assurances that, “As always after each race, and in preparation for the next race, feedback is being sought from designers, sailors and sponsors as to the route of the next race and the type of boat that will be used. This will be distilled and acted upon later this year when the decision-making process begins for the 2014 race.” So it’s not as though anyone is taking a reckless approach. Could it simply be then that this is a race and an environment that is always going to test limits, wherever we decide they are? Ultimately this is – to quote the race’s tag line – ‘life at the extreme’ and man is always going to be tempted to conquer extremes. After all, isn’t that the appeal?

Who are your local heroes? THE RYA’s Sail for Gold programme is helping you to discover and get behind your local sailing heroes. Using the Sail for Gold website you can now discover who your local sailing stars are, learn all about their successes and history as well as their connections to your area. “We want as many people as possible to engage with the London 2012 sailing events and what better way to be inspired than learning all about the sailing heroes that live on your doorstep,” said Celia Edgington, Coordinator of the RYA’s Sail for Gold Programme. “There are so many truly inspirational people who have contributed to the success of the sport. We have been busy interviewing well over 100 people including sailors, windsurfers and the members of the Skandia Team GBR support team, so no matter where you live, everyone will be able to locate their own local hero.” The Sail for Gold initiative aims to bring the excitement of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to sailing clubs

With the aid of One Stop Sailing, companies can advertise their boats’ availability for single berth as well as bareboat or skippered charter to the hundreds of thousands of regular visitors to SailingNetworks.com.

SUPERYACHT CHARITY

FINN WORLD CHAMPS

OVER 100 entries are expected for the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Finn Festival in Falmouth. The Festival includes the annual UK Open Finn National Championships 4–7 May followed by the Finn Gold Cup World Championships. Current European and World Champion Giles Scott (GBR) is amongst the early entrants, as is current Olympic silver medallist Zach Railey (USA).

FISH AND CHIP FUNDRAISER

THE Friends of St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight, has received a donation of £300 raised by a ‘schools out’ scheme run by the popular Corries Cabin fish and chip shop in Cowes. Owner, Richard Quigley, added 50p to all purchases made in February half-term, with the total split between three charities: the Ellen Macarthur Trust, Naomi House and the Friends.

Mixed Multihulls WITH the recent focus on ISAF’s equipment trials for the new 2016 Olympic classes, the RYA will stage two open training sessions for sailors with an eye on the new mixed multihull discipline for Rio. A high performance catamaran event will be making its

return to the Olympic sailing programme for the 2016 Olympic Games for twoperson mixed gender teams, and the RYA is initially arranging two two-day Mixed Multihull training sessions at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from 9-10 April and

17-18 May. The sessions are open both to for owners of twin-trapeze asymmetric cats and for individuals looking for helm/ crewing opportunities. Limited places available; applications by email to eleanor.black@rya.org.uk

Sailability excellence in Scotland CASTLE Semple Water Activities Centre has been officially launched as Scotland’s first ever RYA Sailability Centre of Excellence. Located on the shores of Castle Semple Loch in Lochwinnoch, the water sports centre has been recognised for its fantastic facilities, which enable local disabled adults to get out on the water and experience sailing. Perfect sailing conditions were enjoyed by sailors from local disability organisations who marked the launch by taking to the water. Guests were also invited to watch shorebased demonstrations of boats and specialist equipment with experts on hand to

answer any questions about opportunities to go sailing in Scotland. David Hill Regional RYA Sailability Regional Organiser said: “Castle Semple Water Activities Centre provides an outstanding programme of leisure, formal training and racing for disabled children and adults. We hope this opportunity will encourage even

more disabled people to come and enjoy sailing.”

Hosepipe ban affects boaters THE RYA is consulting with water companies, as well as DEFRA and the Environment Agency, on the possible implications of the hosepipe ban on leisure boating. Seven water companies in the south and south east of England will enforce a hosepipe ban from 5 April. Caroline Price, RYA Planning & Environmental Advisor, explains the concerns: “The UK has been invaded by a number of non-native species which can present a serious risk to native flora and fauna. Hosing down boats before they are moved to another location in order to remove any non-natives that may have ‘climbed aboard’ has been fundamental in minimising their spread across the country. DEFRA could restrict the movement of boats to different waters in the UK in order to prevent the spread of these non-natives. This could impact on dinghy racing, and small powerboat cruising.” Clarity is currently being sought on the issue. For larger boats, filling up tanks for drinking water and washing the boat for health and safety reasons would, the RYA understands, be acceptable.

It is called wanderlust and has to be mixed with a heady dose of wonderlust. It is a matter of curiosity and wondering what is over the horizon. It was about necessity and also excitement that is a special human requirement. So it remains today, and boating provides the thrills. They don’t have to be big as in crossing oceans or logging thousands of miles, taking months or even years. A millennium ago a ten-mile journey to the nearest equivalent of a metropolis was an adventure. Even a century ago some villagers visited their nearest town only once or twice in a lifetime. There are still people in the UK who have never been to London – although granted they may have hopped on a plane to a Mediterranean island that they might best describe as being “about two hours from Newcastle airport”. So if you buy a boat or get access to one, feel the adventurous spirit of Sir Francis welling-up and get ready to explore. It need not involve losing sight of land or setting foot on foreign soil or even the Isle of Wight. What’s around the next headland? Will that secluded cove we have seen from a distant road have room to swing a barbecue? What will your favourite seaside town look like from the sea? The unseasonal summer sunshine that

swathed the south coast at the end of last month was perfect for stretching the imagination. The boat started first time after nearly two months. Halyards and sheets benefitted from an early opportunity to stretch and shake off winter stiffness. We steamed out of the marina and hoisted sails to trap the gentle breeze finding it hard to disguise smug grins as we passed those who still had masts to step. It was invigorating to be on the water and we were pleased to share it with a six-year-old and three year-old who were wide-eyed and ready for adventure. For them half-an-hour outside the pub throwing stones at the sea was fun in itself but they yelped with pleasure as they climbed aboard. They dived below to find lifejackets and lifelines without being asked. Soon they were hanked on ‘up top’ enjoying the sights of Portsmouth’s busy harbour. Modern warships moored close by historic vessels, ferries and tugs bustled about their work as the man from Del Monte arrived from foreign parts in his own ship. There was no need to leave the harbour. The message for children and adults is to maintain interest and fun. Fortunately getting on the water is different every day. Adventures do not have to involve long or arduous journeys but there needs to be a touch of mystery. After all Columbus set sail in search of riches from the East Indies…and found the West Indies!

Sailors are encouraged to borrow RS800s; other twin trapeze asymmetric classes are also welcome. Harvey Hillary, Skandia Team GBR National Racing Coach, commented: “The RYA’S ‘Girls4Gold’ programme is first and foremost about getting more all-female teams racing in UK so this is a perfect opportunity for Sailors from the RS800 and other twin trapeze asymetric classes are welcome. sailors transitioning from Youth sailing or looking to get twin-wire asymmetric racing for the first time. NEWS IN BRIEF LOST IN FOG

TRANSATLANTIC 2015

FOLLOWING the success of the Transatlantic Race 2011, the Royal Yacht Squadron and the New York Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club, have announced the Transatlantic Race 2015 (TR 2015). The race will start in mid-May, 2015 from Newport, Rhode Island, and will coincide with the 200th Anniversary regatta of the Royal Yacht Squadron in early June. New this time will be two finish lines, allowing the race to be scored as two separate races. The first finish will be at Lizard Point in West Cornwall and will provide the fleet the opportunity to challenge the present record set by Rambler 100. The second will be in the vicinity of Cowes, home of the RYS.

King’s yacht comes home K1 BRITANNIA, the exact replica of ‘the King’s Yacht’ commissioned by Prince Albert Edward in the late 1800s, has been successfully lifted into place at the South Boats Service Centre, Venture Quays, Cowes. A few days later than expected due to the yacht weighing in 13 tonnes more than anticipated, the mammoth customised cradle has been filled with an

important piece of the world’s yachting heritage. An impressive 38 metres at deck level, K1 Britannia can be openly viewed from the water at her prominent waterside location in East Cowes. This is something of a homecoming for a yacht that won an incredible 231 races during her life span, many taking place in the nearby Solent. During her

time in Cowes, she will be lovingly restored by some of the most acclaimed professionals in the field. Scott Ward, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Britannia Trust, said: “This is a significant accomplishment not only for our team but also for global yachting heritage which will benefit greatly from such a fulfilling project.”

MARS OPENS FUNDING SCHEME FOR CLUBS THE Mars Refuel Drink Fund, which was set up to encourage people to try new sports and play their favourite sport for longer, will open for entries from 2 April. The Mars Refuel Drink Fund has one gold (£1000), four silver (£500) and eight bronze (£250) awards to donate to the most deserving applicants every month for the next six months.

Past recipients have included Dudley Watersports Centre and Ulley Sailing Club, as well as a number of individual sailors. Applications can be made online at www.marsrefuel.com for support with anything from equipment and travel costs, to improving training grounds and clubhouses.

BREWIN Dolphin, leading independent investment management company, will be headlining two of Royal Southern Yacht Club’s major regattas in 2012; the 175 Anniversary Regatta sponsored by Brewin Dolphin and the Brewin Dolphin British Open Metre Regatta. In this milestone year that marks both the club’s 175th anniversary and Brewin Dolphin’s 250th anniversary, a racing calendar highlight will be the 16-day 175 Anniversary Regatta taking place in late May/June. Some 33 classes and 500 sailors are expected to descend on the Hamble-based club for this unique festival of sailing. The Brewin Dolphin British Open Metre Regatta is also being organised and hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club between 27-29 June. This regatta will include six races over three days for fleets drawn from 12 Metre, 8 Metre and 6 Metre classes. Some 20 yachts are expected across the three classes, promising close competition and considerable spectacle for VIP guests, spectators and the media alike. First built in 1907, the 12 Metre class was used in the Olympics of 1908, 1912 and 1920, but is probably best known for its racing prowess in the America’s Cup challenges between 1958 and 1987. Both the 6 Metre and 8 Metre classes were also Olympic classes in the 1920s. The Notices of Race are at www. royal-southern.co.uk

CALSHOT RNLI all-weather lifeboat Alexander Coutanche was called at 1.15pm on 2 March to find a 16 foot motor cruiser with two people on board that had lost their position due to fog. The pair had set out in clear conditions earlier in the day from Gillkicker Point for a day’s sea angling but had become disorientated when fog descended quickly. They moored themselves alongside a racing buoy and waited to see if the visibility would improve. After waiting for some time – and by now getting cold – they used a mobile phone to call the Coastguard. Calshot all-weather lifeboat crew found the pair at 1.50pm and after taking the two men aboard the lifeboat, then towed the casualty boat to Lee on Solent where they were met by Solent Coastguard. Relief Coxswain Robert McQueen said: “The two gentlemen on the boat did the right thing by mooring to a fixed point and staying put; this enabled us to locate them fairly quickly. We would urge people to check their local weather forecast before setting out and carry a handheld VHF radio.”

A diamond of a lifeboat

EastbournE rnLI Lifeboat station’s new £2.7 million tamar lifeboat – which will be named Diamond Jubilee in honour of rnLI Patron, Her Majesty the Queen – will also be among the highlights of the Diamond Jubilee river thames Pageant this summer. the lifeboat took to the water for the

very first time on 6 February, 60 years to the day that the Queen ascended to throne. Diamond Jubilee will be one of 1,000 vessels making their way along the river thames on 3 June to celebrate the Queen’s 60-year reign. among the select few onboard the

Diamond Jubilee on 3 June will be Eastbourne crew members Coxswain Mark sawyer and Mechanic Dan Guy. other crew will represent the different countries and islands of the british Isles where the rnLI saves lives at sea. Meanwhile, HM the Queen and other members of the royal Family will be

onboard the royal barge, the spirit of Chartwell, as the focal point of the flotilla. the new lifeboat’s participation in the Diamond Jubilee event will coincide with the final part of Eastbourne rnLI crew’s training and familiarisation with their new lifeboat. Paul Metcalfe, Lifeboat operations Manager at Eastbourne rnLI, said: “occasions like this don’t come along every day. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the extraordinary commitment of Her Majesty, our volunteers and all those who support the rnLI.” Eastbourne’s new tamar lifeboat replaces the current all-weather lifeboat, which is almost 20 years old. With a top speed of 25 knots – a crucial factor when lives are at risk – the tamar enables the charity to save lives at sea even more effectively. the cost of the £2.7 million lifeboat has been funded by two generous legacies and other local fundraising efforts, but the rnLI still needs to raise over £300,000 to fully fund the build. the final part of fitting out the new tamar took place at babcock’s boatyard in Plymouth, before she was lifted by crane and lowered into the water for the very first time (pictured). there now follows detailed testing and trials, with crew training to operate the state-of-the-art vessel expected to begin in May. It is hoped the new lifeboat and her crew will be ready for active service by the end of June.

Penlee all-weather lifeboat launched to an injured seaman onboard a 230m oil tanker in thick fog off newlyn on 12 March. the seaman had suffered a serious hand injury when a heavy hatch had fallen on it and needed immediate medical treatment. the volunteer crew at Penlee launched the all-weather lifeboat Ivan ellen in thick fog conditions at 3.25pm to head to the oil tanker’s location 25 miles south of newlyn, arriving alongside the tanker at 4.20pm. Patrick Harvey, Penlee RnlI Coxswain said: “Because the tanker was still moving at about 6 knots and rolling slightly, we had to be careful to get close enough to grab the casualty without damaging the lifeboat and this took a couple of attempts. the casualty was taken back to the lifeboat station at newlyn where a road ambulance took him to truro hospital. “the volunteer crew who responded to the pagers were away from their place of work for about three hours. this wouldn’t be possible without the understanding of their employers and their unwavering support.”

GARMIN THERMAL-IMAGING

MARINE AV has introduced a 12v Bluetooth audio system that can receive wireless output from almost all Bluetooth equipped devices and allow boaters to enjoy it via up to eight speakers with a total of 120 watts output power. This system, comprised of a receiver and an amplifier, is perfect for boats and yachts of all sizes whose owners do not wish to install a full wireless LAN network, yet still want to enjoy audio content held on Apple devices, most PCs and many mobile telephones through a discreet and compact onboard entertainment system. A valuable addition for every vessel from RIBS to large motor and sailing yachts, the 12v Bluetooth sound system can be used with existing speakers, or with one of the wide range of brands available from Marine AV. Price: £306 www.marine-audio.com

GARMIN® has introduced a new family of thermal-imaging and low-light cameras, able to pan, tilt, zoom and provide extra situational awareness by enhancing visibility at any time of day. The GCL 20, Garmin’s low light camera, is especially useful at dawn, dusk and in light fog; Garmin’s thermal imaging versions, the high-resolution GCT 30 and low-resolution GCT 20, aid navigation in total darkness. Each is fully controllable from a compatible Garmin chartplotter and features NMEA 2000 connectivity for greater convenience. With an additional heading sensor, mariners can use multiple Garmin cameras to track one target from the plotter. The GCT 30 and GCT 20 thermal cameras can even detect a hot spot then automatically pan and tilt to follow it, thanks to innovative target tracking technology - invaluable when tracking a man overboard. When paired with the heading sensor, each new camera also has the ability to track MARPA and AIS targets. Price: From £2,599.99 • www.garmin.co.uk

SCAREGULL

SCAREGULL’S rotating action harmlessly deters seagulls from landing – and making a home of your boat – 24 hours a day. It is suitable for boats of any size, although those over 25ft may require more than one to ensure full deck coverage. Scaregull is easy to fit using its standard mounting block but is available with a range of bracket and fixing accessories for mounting in different locations. It can then be quickly removed, along with its mounting pin, and easily stored before sailing. British made, Scaregull is manufactured from lightweight, glassreinforced nylon, which is both ultra violet and salt water resistant, to provide long term protection. Includes full assembly and fitting instructions. Price: £39.95 • www.scaregull.com

CAN YOUR YACHT TAKE THE LOAD? STRAINSTALL Marine has launched the new YP100 series of yacht pins. Answering an increasing demand for load bearing measurement solutions from larger yachts, the YP100 range can be incorporated easily and economically into the load path by replacing existing load bearing pins to measure the load/forces on the main sail. Usually supplied with a 4-20mA integrated amplifier, the pin outputs can be integrated into the vessel’s main navigation controls or supplied as a stand alone system with a display. This enables the most efficient sail position to be determined in order to provide optimal speed and to prevent damage from overload. Price: TBC • www.strainstallmarine.com

BOOKS

ALL AT SEA APRIL 2012

Looking to brush up on your knowledge or perhaps just wind down after a day on the water? Resident bookworm Sam Jefferson airs his views on a selection of the latest literary offerings.

BY SAM JEFFERSON

CORNELL’S OCEAN ATLAS

THIS publication should really be considered an essential item of yacht gear rather than a book. Pilot charts have been around since the days of commercial sail, and they are as valuable today for ocean going boats as they were then. Simply a diagramatic breakdown of the prevailing winds and currents, month by month for every ocean of the world, based on past observations, the data behind this book is all under 20 years old. This is an important factor as climate change means that the days are gone when publishers can get away with basing predictions on 50 year old climatic trends. Jimmy Cornell, founder of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers is something of an elder statesman among blue water sailors. While this large, ring bound A3 volume is hardly bed time reading, it’s quite possible to lose yourself in its charts for hours on end if an ocean crossing is on your ‘to do’ list.

RYA BOAT SAFETY HANDBOOK THE Boat Safety Handbook is a good starting point for someone like me who’s daunted by safety briefings. It offers a very comprehensive guide, working its way through all the gear you require and also discussing what you should do in various scenarios such as man overboard or a fire aboard. It’s not exactly inspiring reading but it is very informative. Reading the book also made me aware of how lacking I am in safety equipment aboard my own yacht. All in all, a valuable guide to get you up to speed on keeping safe at sea. Author: Keith ColwellO’Byrne • Price: £13.99 Web: • www.rya.org.uk/shop

HOW TO SNOG A HAGFISH! DISGUSTING THINGS IN THE SEA

Author: Jimmy and Ivan Cornell Price: £69 Web: www.cornellsailing.com

KNOWING Jonathan Eyers to be a wacky kind of a guy from his previous offering Don’t shoot the Albatross! I approached this book with caution; I wasn’t fond of the title for starters. The book deals with many of the unsavoury creatures that lurk on our ocean bed and gives you a bit of background about what they get up to down there. I actually found it mildly diverting. It wasn’t clear whether this was aimed at kids, but it reminded me of a book we had in the library of my primary school, which I always rather enjoyed. I’m not sure I’d go so far as to buy this book, but I wouldn’t commit it to the deep either. Author: Jonathan Eyers Price: £7.99 Web: www.acblack.com/nautical

ATLANTIC CHILDREN – THE TRUE STORY OF A FAMILY’S YEAR AFLOAT THIS is a two parter about the author’s family trip across the Atlantic and back, based on a true story. I couldn’t help but ponder that this seemed like an awful lot of words to devote to such a trip. After

all, I have always felt that Tolkien was being a bit selfindulgent when he stretched out The Lord of the Rings to a trilogy. But this is 600 pages on one trip and the boat goes nowhere near Mordor. In

fairness, this book may well hold greater appeal for those who have kids; I couldn’t say. Author: Juliet Dearlove Price: £14.99 Web: www.authorhouse. co.uk

POWER

Business woman and British Power Boat Champion Shelley Jory-Leigh, from Hampshire, is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the top female in the world. In her spare time she runs a bridal business.

SHELLEY JORY-LEIGH

Mission Motorsport New faces on the powerboat racing circuit ON 1 March I was invited to attend the launch of a new charity at Thruxton Race Circuit. As trustee of the Disabled Powerboat Trust, both Geoff Holt and I were invited to the official launch of ‘Mission Motorsport’, a new organisation that uses motorsport on land and water to deliver rehabilitation opportunities to injured service personnel. Mission Motorsport was formed by a dedicated group of serving soldiers, officers and motorsport professionals. Their mission is to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by military operations by providing opportunities through motorsport. After a number of very successful events in 2011, the organisation has been granted charitable status by the Charities Commission, and British racing legend Sir Stirling Moss OBE has been confirmed as the charity’s first patron. Mission Motorsport unveiled their exciting plans for 2012, which include a driver development programme, including skills training, coaching and licence acquisition. A P1 SuperStock

150 powerboat and fleet of race and track cars have been prepared, and will be developed and maintained by the servicemen as they train and campaign in a number of race disciplines. The charity is planning to enter the Britcar 24hr race, the 25hr Fun Cup race at Spa Francorchamps as well as a full season entry in the RYA P1 SuperStock British Powerboat Championship, sponsored by Pertemps. Through engagement in the sport, the charity has a secondary aim - to open up a series of vocational opportunities, placements and secondments for injured servicemen considering a return to civilian life.

CHAMPION SUPPORT

A familiar face and friend from the P1 SuperStock race series was also at the launch in the form of the 2011 British P1 SuperStock 250 Champion, John Wilson. John, who has a real passion for the sport of powerboat racing especially the P1 SuperStock series, has lent his championship winning 150 boat to the

Mission Motorsport servicemen to race in the 2012 British championship. John took the time to explain to me exactly how he got involved with Mission Motorsport: “When I met the Director of the Mission Motorsport project, Jim Cameron, at the Motorsport UK show in Coventry at the end of last year, I was immediately impressed with what they were doing and the ethos of the project. “It wasn’t long before I was suggesting that they might consider entering a team into this year’s P1 SuperStock 150

Championship and that I would lend them my 150 ‘Premier Cru boat to help them in doing so. “Jim went back to the rest of the Mission Motorsport team with links to some of the race footage on YouTube and within a few days I was receiving emails from potential Mission Motorsport team members asking ‘where do I sign?’ “However the icing on the cake came when my 250 series sponsors, Pertemps Recruitment, agreed to also sponsor the Mission Motorsport team in 2012.

The support and commitment the team at Pertemps are showing not just for me but now also for the Mission Motorsport team is invaluable, and hopefully both the SuperStock 150 and 250 Pertemps team will be able to reward their dedication with some podium appearances throughout the season!” So, as the season fast approaches a fantastic new charity and a phenomenal group of people are going to start powerboat racing - good luck to both teams! www.missionmotorsport.org

RYA FOCUS

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

BY EMMA SLATER

Becoming an Olympic or Paralympic champion

When, as we hope, at least one Brit stands atop the podium this summer, that sailor’s success will represent the thousands of people throughout the UK who work tirelessly to make sure Britain has the best shot of remaining the world’s top performing nation. That champion sailor will probably never know of the existence of the volunteer that spends every Sunday helping out with junior training at their local club just as that volunteer won’t know the intricacies of what the newly-crowned Olympic champion has been through. Yet both these individuals are inextricably linked by their love of sailing, and at the heart of this sits the sport’s chief championer, the RYA. The RYA wears many different hats, protecting and defending the rights and interests of the whole of Britain’s boating community, from yacht and motor cruisers to inland waterways users,

powerboat racers and windsurfers. Yet once every four years, the outside world gets the highest profile insight

with lottery funding allocated on the number of medals a sport wins at world championships and Olympic games, the ryA leaves nothing to chance. into the pinnacle of what the RYA’s racing department does, thanks to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And for every medal won, it is recognition for those thousands of people at every level, from every walk of life, that the RYA umbrella covers. Since 2000 Britain has been untouchable in winning Olympic medals.

The 16 medals (nine gold, four silver and three bronze) won at the last three Games in Sydney, Athens and Beijing matches the total accrued from 1952 to 1996. This has been universally credited to how quickly the RYA capitalised on the arrival of national Lottery funding in 1997.

Envy Of thE wOrld

Sailing’s national governing body has always supported the Olympic effort, with Britain’s sailors enjoying an earlier golden period from 1968 to 1976, thanks to a wave of newfound professionalism initiated by former RYA Olympic Manager, Vernon Stratton. But, driven by Rod Carr (former RYA CeO), John Derbyshire (RYA Performance Director) and Stephen Park (RYA Olympic Manager), national Lottery funding led to the rapid implementation of a highly-strategic Olympic programme, enabling sailors to run fully professional campaigns. That became the envy of the world. Carr explained: “The mentality

This network includes coaching, physiology, medicine, psychology, meteorology, nutrition, technical projects and logistics. Plus support with the costs of training and competing internationally. With Lottery funding allocated on the number of medals a sport wins at World Championships and Olympic Games, the RYA leaves nothing to chance. The big picture dominates everything and cannot stop at those in the immediate business of winning medals. It has to capture the kid sat at home who has never been in a boat, the disabled teenager who wants a new challenge and the parent who sits at the sailing club reading the papers while their child is out on the water training. These are the Olympians, Paralympians, coaches, administrators and race officials of the future. The RYA’s Olympic Programme is highly-strategic, but so is everything that underpins it. At the heart of what makes Britain so good at sailing is the RYA’s grassroots programmes. Teams of thousands of dedicated professionals and volunteers work with and within Britain’s sailing clubs and centres to try to get more people out on the water for the first time or more often. The theory? The bigger, more structured the pool of people there is to choose from the more likely you are to develop medalwinning potential.

youth groups. To date over 350,000 OnBoard beginner sessions have been run across the 230 OnBoard Clubs and Centres in Britain, with over 19,000 young people taking up sailing or windsurfing regularly team15 – A windsurfing-specific programme aimed at making the sport more accessible and appealing to youngsters under 15. Fun and informal sessions, run by specialist RYA coaches, are held weekly at more than 80 T15 clubs nationwide. ryA training – The world-renowned scheme teaches thousands of people to sail and develop new skills every year ryA sailability – Provides opportunities for disabled people to learn to sail and sail regularly volvo ryA champion clubs – Recognising those sailing clubs with a commitment to youth sailing and race coaching, it aims to encourage young sailors and windsurfers at grassroots level to stay in the sport and learn to compete Regardless of their route into the sport, those youngsters identified as being of the right age, ability and potential are invited on to the first step of the RYA’s World Class Performance pathway - one of the world’s most extensive racing and race training programmes for sailors under 19. Through the RYA national Junior and Youth squad programmes, talented sailors have access to expert advice; coaching and support to hone their talents and, maybe one day top the podium on the biggest stage of all at an Olympics. So just remember, as you sit there this summer watching another sailor add to Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic medal hauls, who is behind them. natural talent, unwavering commitment and sheer bloody-mindedness may get you most of the way, but support takes you over the finish line. And no-one supports like Britain’s sailing community, led by the RYA.

throughout the 80s and 90s was that the system had to be fair, where anyone could win a place at the Olympics. That was fine if you came from a wealthy background and could afford to spend the time practicing and going to key events. For people who had natural talent but had to hold down a job, it was very difficult to compete.” national Lottery funding, coupled with a corporate sponsorship programme, headed up by long-term investment specialists Skandia, means sailors now have access to an extensive support network enabling them to run professional, full-time campaigns, all managed from RYA hQ in Southampton.

IT’S hard to believe that adapted rowing only made its Paralympic debut at the Beijing Games four years ago. With British Olympic rowing tracing its roots back to 1900, and with British rowing being the only sport to win Olympic gold medals at every Games since 1984, what took adapted rowing so long to become a Paralympic sport? Interestingly, it was not until 1998 that the first disabled rowing club affiliated to British Rowing. Today there are more than 20 venues around the country delivering adapted rowing to people with a range of disabilities from physical, to sensory to intellectual disabilities.

THERE ARE FOUR ADAPTED ROWING CLASSES:

ASW1x – Women’s Arm and Shoulders single-scull ASM1x – Men’s Arm and Shoulders single-scull TAMix2x – Mixed Trunk and Arms double-scull LTAMix4+ - Mixed Legs, Trunk and Arms coxed-four

With the exception of the single-scull boats, which are wider, the double-scull and the coxed-four boats are identical to able-bodied boats. If required, stabilising riggers may be fixed to all boats except the coxed-four.

Adaptive rowing is about removing barriers to participation in the sport for anyone with a disability. Adapted rowing may be one of the newest Paralympic sports but, like its Olympic sibling, Great Britain is dominant. Winning 40% of the gold medals at world championships since 2006 and winning three medals (two gold and one bronze) out of the four on offer in Beijing, it’s easy to see why the GB Adapted Rowing team are looking

forward to the Paralympic Games. Maddie Millichap, an adaptive rowing coach based in the West Midlands, says; “Adaptive rowing is about removing barriers to participation in the sport for anyone with a disability. It best suits those with spinal cord injuries, visual impairments, lower limb amputations or restricted movement in a lower limb or wrist. “The equipment is adapted so it is possible to row in a normal boat with adaptions that are inexpensive and easy to use such as seats, straps, gloves.” Two names in particular stand out in adaptive rowing - Tom Aggar and Helene Raynsford; both won gold medals in Beijing in the ASM1x and the ASW1x respectively. The LTAMix4+ crew won bronze. Both Aggar and the coxed-four crew also won gold at last year’s world championships but sadly GB failed to qualify in the ASWx1 event meaning GB will have no representative in the individual women’s event at the Games this year. Although Aggar remains favourite to retain his GB Team ASM1x position, British Rowing will not announce the team until after the final qualifying

The conferences will cover practical safety knowledge, equipment and the tools to assess a situation and decide on suitable solutions. There will also be a number of workshops for

LAST year I was asked by National Historic Ships to be a judge on their annual photography competition panel. With more than 350 entries, trust me, it was a difficult decision whittling them down to a shortlist. Thankfully fellow judges, the likes of Peter Mumford from Beken of Cowes, Dan Houston from Classic Boat Magazine and the legendary Jock Wishart, make the task much easier; democracy in action...! I’m pleased to say that they have asked me back for a second year of judging so, for my part, I’m putting a shout out to all readers of my column to get your cameras out and get snapping. With no age limit and cash prizes, including an overall winner cash prize of £1,000, up for grabs, there is no excuse not to have a go. There are plenty of categories to enter including;

attendees to contribute. Despite all Sailability sites having their own safety policies, as yet, no other National Governing Body has attempted to co-ordinate the complex, and often thorny subject of safety within a disabled sailing context. Congratulations to the RYA for being proactive and doing something positive to minimise risk by co-ordinating and sharing best practise. Seminars will be held on 14 April in Bristol and on 12 May at Leigh & Lowton. Attendance is free to all RYA Sailability Foundation sites. sailability@rya.org.uk

GREEN FOCUS

A joint BMF and RYA initiative

The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms.

ALEX WATKINS, THE GREEN BLUE

■ Anti-foul: It’s an important part of maintaining your boat, but heavy metals (no not Led Zeppelin) in anti-foul are extremely harmful to the wildlife that live in our waters. When stripping your anti-foul lay a tarpaulin down to catch these heavy metals before they reach the water. When applying a new coat try not to spill any. This will help save you money and the environment. ■ Engine bay and bilges: It is inevitable that there will be spills on your boat, it’s just part of life on board - but it’s important that these spills are cleaned up. Try putting a bilge sock in your bilge and around your engine bay. This will absorb oil and fuel spills and allow you to dispose of it safely on shore; but remember this must be done as a hazardous material.

■ Cleaning your hull: We all want a beautiful shiny boat because nothing shows how great a sailor you are than a nice clean boat; but what do you use? There are many products out there to clean with but the main focus is to use products that contain no bleach and no chlorine. These are extremely harmful to the environment. ■ Around the boat yard: Don’t forget that the water is never far away. Whilst working on your boat, make sure that you avoid spills and clean up after yourself. Packaging can contain all sorts of horrible things that you don’t want in the water; a small gust and before you know it it’s in the water floating down tide. Accidents happen, but try to help avoid them. Try to recycle packaging wherever possible; most boat yards will have facilities for you. Ok, so I got a little bit preachy there -

Do your bit as you get ready for the season.

but the points are valid. The main thing to remember is that doing your part doesn’t mean making a massive change. It just means thinking about the little things that can help. It’s the sum of all the little things that can make a big

ARCHIVE

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating.

SAILING THEN AND NOW

Hayling history weekend

David Henshall.

OVER a long weekend in March, Hayling Island Sailing Club opened its doors to the public with a special display documenting the history of Sandy Point, where the club is located at the western side of the entrance to Chichester Harbour. Hayling Island Sailing Club has for a long time been one of the UK’s premier dinghy racing clubs. The long list of world class events hosted by the club is matched equally by the list of world class and Olympic sailors that have honed their skills as club members at Hayling. As a result, a huge legacy of detailed history about the club exists, including the events and the people that made it so special. And today, Hayling Island Sailing Club is rightly proud of the role it has played; from back in those dark wartime days, all the way through the golden years of the 1950s and 60s, when dinghy sailing became a ‘a sport for all’,

to the modern era where today’s dinghy sailors are indistinguishable from any other full time athletes. However, Hayling’s history goes back much further than just to the start of the modern dinghy sailing era. In the war Sandy Point played an important role as a base for ‘cloak and dagger’ operations that were mounted against the Germanoccupied French coastline. Many of these highly secretive raids were in fact careful surveys to assess the suitability of beaches for the planned invasion that would be Operation Overlord.

archive contains many varied artefacts, documents and old movies that had been shot by club members. Consequently, the display archive tells the complete story of Sandy Point, starting back from the wartime days then following a chronological path through the early post war days, through to the building of the modern high-tech premises that is the home of the sailing

club today. During the open weekend, the display proved a big attraction with people travelling to Hayling from locations such as Brighton, with many of the visitors bringing along additional stories and bits of information to add to what has become an amazing story. Belinda, aided by Léonie Austin and the rest of the Historical

Team from the sailing club can be congratulated for putting on what can only be described as a fascinating display. This did not just cover sailing, but also the huge development of the area, such as the old Toll Bridge that linked Hayling Island to the mainland, and the changes in dress and social behaviour. The club hopes to repeat the event later this year.

RETRACING THE STORY

Under the careful eye of Chief Historian Belinda Cook, Hayling Island Sailing Club’s members have been busy working their way through the archived material, making sure that it is clearly identified and the all important ‘stories behind the pictures’ are documented. As Belinda was keen to stress, it is not just a collection of photographs. The display

There are those who may argue that adding to the distress call and message is an unnecessary complication; however by sending the MMSI on VHF channel 16, the Coastguard can make sure that the DSC call is matched by the voice communication. I suspect that there have been incidents where there have been problems and this is why the changes have been made. On another safety note, I have just

had my liferaft serviced and took the opportunity to see it inflated and what the contents were. The photos here will give you an idea. It was gratifying to see that, blown up it held its air and seemed in pretty good condition for a 6 year old raft. I had an interesting experience with my first, which I bought second hand and which the seller assured me had been serviced the year before. Having had it on board for 6 months during a passage from UK to Morocco, I took the raft to be checked over in Gibraltar. When the canister was opened up, all the rubber tubes were found to be rotten, the canister then triggered and it failed to work. Never rely on someone else’s word, mind you this was over thirty years ago, and I am a little older and hopefully wiser too! I took some photographs of my current liferaft and keep copies of these on board. When talking through liferaft procedures at some stage during a briefing to a new crew, I can show them what it looks like, how to climb in, and the sack contents within the liferaft. It becomes a good discussion point as to what extras we would take with us given time to collect

essentials. It is interesting to note that a 44ft yacht, hit by a bulk carrier travelling at 25 knots in thick fog a few years back, lost the front 12ft of her hull. She still took 10 minutes to sink. Luckily she lost her bow and was not hit in the centre or stern where all the crew were. What would be on your list of essentials to grab if you had just minutes to make it into the liferaft?

6 J class yachts will be racing round the Isle of Wight on 21 July 2012 in a re-enactment of the 100 Guinea cup raced in 1851. I am chartering a 700 ton vessel which will carry 300 passengers, from which we can watch the race. I will be providing a light breakfast, a slap up lunch and Cornish Cream afternoon tea. ALL AT SEA APRIL 2012

All you need to know in the run up to this incredible once in a lifetime event, both on and off the water.

Welcome to Weymouth

Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell competing at last year’s Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.

Weymouth is very much open for business during the Olympic period and throughout the entire summer of 2012. That’s the message that Peter Mole, Harbour Master of Weymouth Harbour, is keen to get out there. PETER and his team have been working hard with Portland Harbour Authority for the last two years to ensure that operations within the Olympic waters run like clockwork during the Games, as the area gets ready to host racing for 10 classes over a 14 day period for 380 Olympic athletes. A further six days of racing is scheduled in September, when 80 Paralympians are due to compete in three classes. Having been granted a Harbour Revision Order, Peter and his team have secured the legal go-ahead required to to take control of the waters for the 67 days of the Games period. The application for the HRO, made in tandem with one for Portland Harbour, involved a lengthy

consultation process with local water users, both leisure and commercial. It is thanks to this process that the operations procedures during the Games period will enable the harbour to continue to operate with the minimal

Despite the expense, the experience will be well worthwhile for those who choose to come. disruption possible. Peter explains: “Visiting yachts are

welcome to stay in Weymouth Harbour during the Games period, providing they have a berth booked in advance. Yachts resident in Weymouth Harbour will also be able to come and go as they please, providing they adhere to the course exclusion areas set up around the race courses. Boats entering and leaving the harbour will be guided by a traffic control system, needed to segregate vessels actually taking part in the Games, with additional instructions via VHF; stickers will be issued to identify visitors and residents. “We will be working with Portland Harbour Authority, LOCOG and Dorset Police to handle these operations, together with harbour personnel

where the Olympic sailors and support boats will be based. We will also be liaising with the command centre in town where the emergency services and local authorities will be operating from; as well as with the warship anchored offshore which will be jointly responsible for security.” Picturesque Weymouth.

from nearby Bridport and Lyme Regis harbours assisting us. To ensure smooth operations, either myself or the deputy harbour master will be based on site 24-7 during the Olympics. We will be in constant contact with Portland Harbour,

REASONS TO VISIT

Whilst LOCOG security requirements and the operational running of the actual regatta itself have meant that the berths in Portland Marina cannot be used by the public during the Games, the council-run Weymouth Harbour has made some 150 berths available to visitors, with a further 50 berths available in a special

anchorage located in Weymouth Bay. Huge investment in the modernisation of these marina facilities, as well as in the appearance and infrastructure of the town itself, means that whilst the berthing costs to visiting yachts during the Games may have been hiked up, Weymouth has been made an increasingly attractive place to visit. With 60% of the visitors’ berths already booked, Peter believes that, despite the expense, the experience will be well worthwhile for those who choose to come. He says: “Although we’re seeing a slight downturn in regular visitors to Weymouth, who may have been deterred by the cost, we are taking far more bookings than usual from larger yachts, charter vessels and boats from the Continent. Balancing the books with the significant extra costs incurred is a real dilemma and we will probably be reducing our fees for the period on either side of the Games in response to comments we have received in the last few months.” With the approach of the Games and the completion of the preparations imminent, the town is looking forward to welcoming its influx of visitors, as Peter says: “With the implementation of new infrastructure, transport links and visitor attractions, it feels in some respects as if Weymouth has been paralysed for the last year; the result is that some locals have become sceptical. But now it is starting to come together, there’s a feeling people are warming to it and the enthusiasm is starting to build. As a town and as a harbour, Weymouth is most definitely open! It’s going to be fantastic for any one who is joining us this summer.”

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

These determined young guns fought off stiff competition from double Olympic medalist, Nick Rogers, and double World Champions, Nic Asher and Elliot Willis, to earn the 470 spot for 2012. Find out what makes them tick… Names: Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell Ages: Both 25 Class: 470 Sailing clubs: Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy

Q&As

AAS: How would you each describe yourself? Luke: Passionate, fiery and young at heart (sorry that’s five words isn’t it!?) Stuart: Laid back, competitive and happy. AAS: How would you describe each other? Luke: Excitable, happy and grounded. Stuart: Cool, fiery and committed. AAS: How did you feel when you heard you’d been selected for the 2012 Olympics? Stuart: We both felt a lot of different emotions really; a mixture of relief - a weight off our shoulders with lots and lots of excitement. More than anything we thought it’s “time to get working”. AAS: How does it feel to be part of Team GB? Stuart: It feels great to be the new kids on the block and we are so proud to be part of such a successful sailing team. We draw great confidence from that; they are a good bunch and you can’t buy the advice the older more

experienced team players give you. AAS: What will be your biggest challenge during the Games? Luke: Often your biggest rival can be yourself! It is our first Games so our biggest challenge will be dealing with the occasion; however we have one of the best support teams in the world to help us on our way. AAS: What’s your main training focus between now and then? Luke: Train hard, but arrive at the Games fresh and hungry to win. We will be competing at the Princess Sofia Regatta, Palma, and the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth in the meantime. AAS: What are you most looking forward to? Luke: The first start of the first race - it will be so exciting. AAS: What is it that has got you this far? Stuart: Working so well as a team and having belief in ourselves. Plus a lot of support at an early age from our parents, and the RYA Youth programme. AAS: What was the single biggest turning point in your sailing career? Stuart: For both of us it was the 2009 470 World Championships in Denmark. We had only been sailing together for a few weeks and finished second. Everything changed after that. AAS: What is the most important

Dreaming of sun, sea and sailing – turn to Holiday Special on page 32

thing you have learnt? Luke: It is just one big game - you win some you lose some, but as long as you’re having fun it doesn’t matter. Also, if you get the right team you can achieve anything! AAS: What tips do you have for aspiring Olympians? Luke: Work hard, aim for perfection and dream big. AAS: Favourite thing to do away from sailing? Luke: Surfing on Tiree [Scottish Inner Hebrides], rock climbing and playing my guitars. Stuart: Playing hard! Although it’s great spending time at home, out in the sun having a BBQ. AAS: Which car do you drive? Stuart: We both drive Volvo V70s. When you are coming up through the ranks you drive these old bangers and vans around and spend half your life in garages getting your transport fixed, so it is great to finally have such a nice, comfortable, reliable car! AAS: And which car would you like to drive?! Luke: Land Rover Defender 90 Stuart: Audi RS8 AAS: Dream holiday destination? Luke: Tiree – I like going home to Scotland, it’s the only place where I can really relax. Stuart: The Maldives. It sells itself really!

IF you are not planning to make the pilgrimage to Weymouth this summer but still want a taste of the action, fear not. The BBC will be bringing you non-stop real time TV, online and radio coverage of the Olympic Games throughout the 14 days of events. So, whether you’re watching from your living room, listening on the go or viewing via your mobile, iPad or similar mobile gadget, you can follow the action. The good news for sailing is that, thanks to our sport’s huge potential for scooping medals, it’s due for a good chunk of airtime. Dave Gordon, Head of Major Events, BBC Sport, has described sailing as a “high priority sport” which, he says, has been allocated a significant amount of resource with its own dedicated broadcast team. Two of the five sailing courses will be filmed at any one time by the Olympic Broadcasting Services, who then instantly distribute the footage to national rights holders around the world, the BBC included. The BBC will then tailor this footage for the home audience, integrating it with its own additional camera footage, explanatory graphics, analysis of GPS tracking data, and of course, expert commentary. A team of ex-Olympic sailors, including gold medalists Shirley Robertson and Pippa Wilson, together with Leigh McMillan, is set to take on commentators’ roles. If – or rather, when - our sailors cinch those all-important medals,

their moment of glory will be broadcast live to the nation, interrupting coverage from other sports if needs be. With Olympic action being broadcast 19 hours a day on BBC 1; 14 hours a day on BBC 3; and 24 hours a day on BBC Radio 5 Live; plus simultaneous live streaming from up to 24 events at peak times on the BBC website, it’s going to be easy to overdose! Racing in Weymouth is scheduled for 6 hours per day, starting at noon, from 29 July to 11 August, with the first medal races (Finn and Star classes) scheduled on 5 August.

The Team GB representatives were then on hand throughout the remainder of the show, fielding questions about their preparations, signing autographs, and soaking up the friendly show atmosphere as they mingled with their fans. Fast-forward to 2016 and interest in the next Olympics was already being generated, as three of the six new contenders for the ISAF Women’s Skiff Class were on display, ahead of the ISAF trials. The RS900, Ovington’s Aura and hartley’s Rebel caused a stir of speculation amongst visitors eager to see the long-awaited designs in the flesh. The RYA Volvo Dinghy Show proved as popular as ever this year with dinghy enthusiasts from across the country and as far afield as Alaska in the United States, flocking to Alexandra Palace, London. In a blaze of colour, action and excitement, the annual pre-season dinghy extravaganza sprang to life over the weekend of 3-4 March. As a sea of sails greeted visitors, filling the halls in every direction, there was no doubting that this was a boat show – and one that would not disappoint. With a packed house of over 200 exhibitors spanning boat manufacturers, clothing retailers, class associations, sailing clubs and centres, plus a whole host of live and interactive features taking place, the atmosphere was undeniably buoyant as visitors of all ages checked out what’s new for 2012.

RYA Dinghy Show stayed true to its roots by offering plenty to inform and tempt sailors of all sorts; from hands-on boat repair demos to old family favourites such as the holt Blow Boat competition. Main stage talks attracted big crowds, as did the more hands on coaching sessions where visitors got to experience everything from rolling around on a fitness ball to improve core stability to the always-popular rig tuning session.

Younger visitors whizzed around the show collecting stickers in the Treasure hunt, posted good luck messages to our Olympic hopefuls and enjoyed relaxing in the Volvo Chill Out bubble, as well as meeting their sailing heroes, racing on the sailing simulator and trying out the RYA honda Youth RIB online game. Mariah Wellar won an RS Tera in the design a sail competition; the 9-yearold from Nairn, flew the 550 miles from Inverness to London with her family after finding out her design had been shortlisted as one of six finalists. There were gasps of delight all round after her design, based on the Iggy character from Moshi Monsters and cleverly including the ‘MonsTera’ play on the dinghy’s name, was named as the judges’ favourite from amongst some 80 entries. There was success also for harriett Lee and Phillip Taylor who both picked up a new bike for winning the Treasure hunt. In the Club ticket competition Crawley Mariners claimed the top prize of a Rigiflex safety boat complete with Suzuki 9.9hp outboard and trailer. The first ever RYA Volvo Dinghy Show SailX Championship came to an exciting climax when the winner was unveiled during a nail biting final, screened live on the main stage with commentary from Paul Goodison. In the end, it was Seb Baucutts, a young 29er sailor from Stokes Bay who walked away with the new Virtual endeavour Trophy, beating off competition from 652 other competitors around the world.

Yachting options: how to choose your dream holiday

Next, it’s time to think about the sort and size of yacht you want; of course this depends primarily on the number of friends and family you’re holidaying with, but also on the performance and handling characteristics you’re looking for, and of course whether you’re going

Sunail offers award-winning catamarans.

WHAT’S ON OFFER FOR 2012? SUNSAIL: Sunsail is the largest sailing and watersports company, operating over 800 yachts. Part of the Tui Travel giant, it offers flotilla holidays in the Med and Carribbean, as well as bareboat or skippered charters to destinations as far flung as Australia, Malaysia and the Seychelles. In updating its fleet for 2012, Sunsail has introduced a Premier Plus range, allowing you to guarantee a new yacht for your holiday, including the awardwinning new Sunsail 444 catamaran. Sunsail prides itself on being able to accommodate pretty much any type of yachting holiday; with boats ranging from 33 to 53ft for between six and 13 guests. Holidays are graded according to competency levels required, which is a great idea for those with limited sailing experience who want to be sure they’re not being thrown in at the deep end! Worth considering for families are the dedicated ‘Family Flotillas’, where an activity co-ordinator is supplied to keep young ones entertained. For those who are torn between a week of yachting and a week of dinghies, Sunsail offers a combination option, with a two week ‘Club Flotilla’ available from its Vounaki base in Greece. NEILSON: With more than 25 years of experience, Thomas Cook-owned Neilson is another well-known sailing holiday specialist that offers a solution to the ‘yacht or dinghy’ dilemma. Its two-week

Stay & Sail package includes a week at one of its beach clubs in Greece or Turkey, with four days of yacht sailing tuition and access to watersports activities, followed by a week afloat with a flotilla. If you need to master the basics but don’t have the luxury of time on your side, Neilson’s one week Learn to Sail is the perfect compromise. During the first three days of the holiday you will follow an introduction to yachting course, living on board but at the Neilson base. On the fourth day you can sail off and join in with the rest of the flotilla, putting your new skills into practise with your instructor in tow. More experienced sailors are welcome to jump straight in to a one or two week flotilla or bareboat charter, exploring the Ionian or Aegean Isles, or the Lycian coast of Turkey. Neilson has just invested £1 million in ten new Dufour yachts, boosting its existing fleet of 32-40ft Dufour and Beneteaus in time for the 2012 season.

operate several flotilla routes, spread across the Ionian and Saronic. New for the 2012 season, the Sporades Islands route promises a fresh challenge and new scenery to appeal to more experienced sailors.

SAIL IN TURKEY: Turkey has become another popular yachting destination in recent years, with its unique culture and hot, dry climate. Those wanting a taste of tailor-made Turkish delight should consider Sail in Turkey, a boutique charter company operating from Marmaris. Bareboat and skippered options are available, and the personalised service includes a bespoke itinerary, with the option of extending your stay onshore. Complementing the small fleet of Dufours and Oceanis yachts is the Spirit 56, sister ship to James Bond’s yacht in Casino Royale, plus new for 2012 is a luxury Broadblue 435 catamaran.

Look for the RYA sign There are over 2,500 RYA recognised training centres across the UK and worldwide, nearly 500 of which are located overseas. When choosing your charter or beach club operator, look for the RYA ‘tick mark’ logo to see if the operator is RYA recognised. This guarantees high standards of instruction and safety, which are assessed annually by RYA inspectors. It also means that the operator is able to run RYA courses and qualifications.

Sailing Holidays, Greek Isles specialists.

SAILING HOLIDAYS: If there’s just

the two of you and it’s a romantic getaway you’re looking for, take a look at Sailing Holidays. This 35-year old company owns some 170 yachts, a considerable fleet for a family-owned operation. In particular, it has a number of 27-32ft ‘economy’ yachts, offering a cost-effective option for couples wanting a yacht to themselves. Also in the fleet is a good selection of mid-range Beneteaus for families. Sailing Holidays offer a relaxed approach to their flotillas, with guests at liberty to detour as they wish en route to an agreed daily destination. These Grecian island-hopping experts

Sail in Turkey offers bespoke itineraries.

VELVET ADVENTURE SAILING:

What about those looking for a European cruising destination with a difference, somewhere that’s far from the marinas of the Med but still within easy reach of the UK? Velvet Adventure Sailing has a 2012 cruising itinerary taking in Scandinavia and the Danish Archipelago. Sailing with a skipper and host onboard an Oyster 55, these fully inclusive trips

are ideal for individuals or couples to join. Explore remote fishing ports and secluded anchorages on a voyage that will take you far from the beaten track.

for all out luxury or are happy to settle for something more practical. Make sure you are clear about what is included in the price when booking, as this differs from company to company. If they are not already included, flights, transfers, provisioning and other add-ons can usually be arranged for you, and you will find the charterer only to happy to recommend routes and tips on the local area as part of the handover briefing on your arrival. After that, it’s time to cast off the mooring lines, set sail and let the adventure begin!

AAS1204 Broadblue

WHEN it comes to a yachting holiday, there are two main options to consider: flotilla or charter? Your decision will depend on your preference for cruising in company with a flotilla of other yachts and having an expert crew on-hand onboard the lead yacht, versus solo adventuring onboard your own chartered yacht. In either case, there’s usually the option of having a skipper onboard. Whichever you opt for, there are plenty of companies that can provide you with your dream holiday package. Most operate within the popular and easilyreached non-tidal waters of the Med, although some also offer more exotic destinations. Different destinations will be characterised by different weather and sailing conditions, and so, in addition to shoreside considerations, this should also factored in.

LATESAIL: If you’re not ready to limit your options to one company, or have

left it till the last minute to book, check out LateSail. This is the world’s largest consolidator (‘bucket shop’) for the yacht charter market, so you are guaranteed a bargain! LateSail specialises in worldwide discounted sailing holidays whether it is a bareboat, flotilla, cabin or crewed charter.

Constantly updated, the site features special offers from over 90 of the world’s largest global and local operators, as well as offering a ‘name your price’ function to find the best deal, with prices based on the cost of the whole boat and excluding extras.

Beach club choices: finding your ideal watersports getaway boats at their leisure. They are also a big hit with families looking for active kids clubs and childcare, non-stop action for teens, something to keep dad from getting bored, and the option for mum to kick back and relax. And of course, putting paid to age/gender stereotypes, they are also loved by anyone who is sailing-mad and who simply cannot get enough time on the water! Tempted? First up, you need to choose an operator and a resort. So, consider the type of watersports equipment and the prevalent sailing conditions – you want to be sure that these tick the right boxes for you. Accommodation and catering options are next on the list; are you after a fully catered five-star resort or do you prefer something more low key and independent? Often, Sunsail Vounaki is a modern resort with a traditional Greek feel. resorts will include

additional shoreside activities such as tennis, cycling, exercise classes and spa facilities, or perhaps a local excursion trip, which may be deciding factors. Anyone travelling with small children will want to consider flight and transfer times; as well as kid’s club options and childcare facilities on site. For those travelling without children, think carefully about when you book; choose dates outside of school holidays if you want to be sure of peace and quiet! Finally, it’s time to pack your shorts, grab your sunnies and head for the sun… Don’t worry, you can definitely leave your wetsuit at home!

consequently there’s a limited choice of destination: it’s now Vounaki or… Vounaki. That’s not to say that this Greek superresort doesn’t have everything you could ask for in a dinghy sailing holiday. The allimportant fleet-list includes a mammoth

repertoire with just about every sailing school suspect you can image, plus extras like the RS800 and SB3 to spice things up. The all-inclusive package includes free sailing/windsurfing courses and clinics. Half-board accommodation is hotel-based with various priced options.

WHAT’S ON OFFER FOR 2012? SUNSAIL: Sunsail has been going

MARK WARNER: Brand new in 2012, family holiday specialists, Mark Warner, will be opening a five-star resort, Levante Beach, in Rhodes. Built to Mark Warner’s own specification, this is the second five-star resort in its portfolio. Other destinations include three further Greek resorts, plus Sardinia, Corsica and Turkey. Luxurious Levante Beach features 150 contemporary styled rooms, and plus 10 suites, some with private pools; there

are also four main pools, air-conditioned childcare centre, six tennis courts, and signature spa. Flights are with BA, and full or half board options are available. Covering waterskiing to supping to try-dives, Mark Warner’s watersports options let you try your hand at everything. Recreational sailing and windsurfing tuition are included in the package. MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON MARINAS AND HARBOURS

Milford Haven Marina PEMBROKESHIRE

Back in 790AD, Viking Chief Hubba found himself in a spot of hot water off the Welsh coast. He’d gone on a bit of a cruise in search of rape and pillage and now, with the winter closing in, he needed a place to see out the festive season. He headed his longship for a tempting looking inlet, which the Norse named Milford, which translates roughly as ‘sandy Fjord’. Ever since, Milford Haven and the Cleddau Estuary has provided ideal shelter for ships of all sizes.

Aerial view of the lock and marina berths, recently expanded.

Milford Marina Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire SA73 3AF Tel: +44 (0) 1646 696312 Email: enquiries@ pembrokeshiremarinegroup.com

THIS quiet corner of South Wales has become a popular destination for cruising yachtsmen with the nearby islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm providing a pleasant cruising ground with a spectacular abundance of wildlife. Meanwhile, the upper reaches of the Cleddau Estuary are a bit of a hidden jewel, which reward those with fresher water in their veins. Milford Haven Marina lies at the mouth of the estuary. For many years this locked basin acted as a thriving fishing port with a few pontoons for yachts. Recently, however, the sands have shifted in the yachtsmen’s favour and the marina has expanded, boasting 328 serviced berths. Further expansion is afoot with the

Pembrokeshire Marine Group getting onboard with the aim of further sprucing up the facilities. Working alongside the Milford Haven Port Authority, their aim is to improve services and attract more yachtsmen, using the bait of good value berthing fees and the spectacular scenery. To this end, improved facilities, more berths and refurbished pontoons are promised over the next few years. New locking facilities are also promised in the near future.

ENTERING THE MARINA

LATITUDE 51º 42’ 25” N LONGITUDE 005º 02’ 02” W The good news is that the entrance to the Milford Haven estuary is a mile wide

and arguably has one of the best marked approaches in the world. This has a lot to do with the Sea Empress disaster of 1996, which saw a large tanker spill gallons of oil into the Haven’s pristine waters. The approach is also very deep, with Chapel Rocks in the middle of the channel presenting the only real threat. These are about 3.5m deep, but can kick up a bit of confused sea at certain states of the tide. In addition to this, there can be a strong cross tide at times and it can cut up a bit rough off St Anne’s, which is on the west side of the entrance and easily distinguished by the high red cliff with a lighthouse perched on top. Milford Haven has some huge tankers going in

Roger Greenwood and his wife Jennifer have kept their Moody 30 Free Spirit of emsworth at Milford Haven Marina for several years, and think that Milford is a cruising heaven. Here’s why: “We enjoy weekend sailing and often take the grandchildren out, so it’s important that we have safe, sheltered cruising grounds to hand. If the weather is looking fine and settled, you can head out to sea and you have all those beautiful islands to explore. the wildlife is absolutely stunning too; puffins, fulmars, dolphins, you name it, there’s so much out there.” Roger also believes that Milford Haven Marina is his best bet for security, with the lock gates giving added protection. “Given that we’re retired, we really weren’t that worried about lock times or anything of that nature. the staff here are extremely friendly and helpful and the marina charges were also a pleasant surprise. An added bonus is that you get four months dry storage every year.”

If it’s a weekend cruise you’re after, the marina provides a gateway to one of the finest cruising grounds in the UK. The big question as you leave the marina is right or left? Head out to sea and you have a spectacular coastline with the islands of Skomer, Grassholm and Skokholm all within a day’s sail. Turn left, head under the soaring Cleddau Road Bridge and you enter the secret waters of the Cleddau Estuary. Navigation up the river is possible for any vessel drawing around 1.5m, but bilge keels and a shallow draught certainly help. The river goes all the way up to Haverfordwest, but unless you can lower your mast, you won’t get much further than Landshipping, which is still several miles up river. Highlights for the >>

the Milford estuary offers a number of tempting pubs all within a couple of hours’ cruise. Right on your doorstep is the Heart of Oak Inn. Sitting in the heart of the town, this place has bags of atmosphere and is the ideal place to repair to prior to sailing or to find your land legs post cruise.

Berthing & Facilities

Milford Haven offers all the facilities that yachtsmen have come to expect, including free car parking, fuel, WiFi access, lift out, showers and toilets and fully serviced berths with electricity and water. You can contact the marina on VHF Ch 37. Cost of berthing is calculated on length; as a rough indication, the price for keeping a 9m (29ft) boat at the marina will be £1768 for the year or at a quarterly rate of £618 for summer months and £301 during the winter. The daily rate for berthing is £24.

and out, so steer well clear and monitor Milford Haven Port Control on Ch12. It’s worth bearing in mind that you don’t have to stay within the main channels if you’re in a small yacht. The entrance is split into two main shipping channels: West Channel and East Channel. The West Channel is generally the favoured one for really huge tankers as it is slightly deeper, around 13m in fact, while the East is about 10m deep. The channels are divided by Chapel Rocks, the western end of these rocks being marked by the Mid Channel Lighthouse. Milford Haven itself lies just beyond a large tanker jetty off South Hook Point. Yachts must stay 100m off these terminals at all times. Entrance to the marina is via the lock to port, approached through a buoyed channel of minimum depth 1.5m. You can call up the lock on Ch 14, call sign ‘Pier Head’. Freeflow operates two hours before high water until HW. Outside of freeflow, the lock opens at scheduled times available from the marina.

What to see

the big attraction in Pembrokeshire is the spectacular coastline. Best seen from the water, some sailors might argue, but if you fancy seeing it from a different angle, then there are innumerable coastal walks to enjoy. A recommended walk would be through the Stackpole estate. these are the grounds of a now defunct stately home and the gardens are set in a valley that the owner flooded to create a series of lakes. this makes for a fascinating stroll down to the beautiful Barafundle Beach and you can then follow the coastal path around to Stackpole Quay. www.nationaltrust.org.uk If it’s a bit of culture you crave, then the torch theatre in Milford Haven has garnered a good reputation and is handy for the marina, featuring a good mix of plays, operas and films. www.torchtheatre.co.uk

intrepid and shallow draughted include taking a passage up the Pembroke River right up to the Castle Pool, below the walls of the castle, while a trip up the Carew River is also possible on a high tide. So that’s turning inland, what if you want to head out to sea? This offers a similarly tempting range of options for the weekend sailor. Dale and Angle, both within the estuary, are well worth a visit, as are the islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm which are all within easy reach and feature strikingly beautiful coastlines and a wealth of wildlife.

Other highlights for a weekend sail include the beautiful village of Solva, which is located just around the corner in St Brides Bay. Slightly further afield, but still within a weekend’s sail are the pretty towns of Tenby, to the east, and Fishguard to the north. Another spot worth a visit in offshore conditions is the beach at Barafundle. Ireland is about 60 miles away and, in favourable conditions, you can comfortably get across in between 10

and 16 hours. Kilmore Quay is the closest destination, but the best trick is to make as much south as you can on your way across and then, at least in theory, you’ll have plenty of miles worth of prevailing southwesterlies to get you up the coast and back across. Heading north, Cardigan Bay is a bit of

a lee shore, so the next obvious stopover after Fishguard is Pwllheli. Most cruisers, however, generally favour a longer trip to the Scillies as there are a couple of good stopovers. Lundy Island is an option in the right conditions, while the sheltered haven of Padstow is 16 hours or so away.

The area is home to an abundance of wildlife.

JUMBLE WATCH

ALL AT SEA APRIL 2012

Chris Chaddock has been attending and organising boat jumbles for over 25 years; here he gives a round-up of recent Boat Jumble Association approved events.

BOAT JUMBLE NEWS

Spring fever at the Boat Jumbles SPRING is a great time for boat jumbling, as the weather warms up and the clocks go forward giving us the enthusiasm and more daylight hours to tackle those refitting chores in preparation for the new boating season. Since the last issue of All at Sea I have visited four events in the north, south, east and west and I am glad to report they were all well attended and there were some fabulous bargains to be had. Here is a brief taster of what was trending…

My favourite was a Starline 500, a 5 metre twin-berth day cruiser in great condition. Essex Boat Jumble had a massive east coast crowd and sellers reported good sales of rope, antifoul paint and small outboards. Moving south to Kent Boat Jumble with its indoor and outdoor stands I was glad to see the Kent Marine Police in attendance. They check all outboard motors and boats for sale to ensure there are no stolen items amongst them; none were found but it serves to reassure the public that they can buy at boat jumbles with confidence. I spoke with several members of the public who had purchased soundproofing, non-slip deck covering, fender buoys and Teleflex steering controls, and who were all very pleased with the savings they had made. Up north, Middlewich, in Cheshire to

be exact, Terry and Margaret Cross, the organisers of the aptly named ‘Northern Boat Jumble’ served up another winner of a show with anodes and fenders being big sellers. Even the short sharp hail storm couldn’t deter the hardy bargain hunters; they’re tough up north! Finally moving down to the West Country to a very sunny Poole I attended the Dorset Boat Jumble where families were out in force enjoying the weather and that special boat jumble ambience. The sun had brought out the boats and there was a great selection to choose from including a 17ft Fletcher Speedboat with red vinyl trim (very Peter Stringfellow), and a new 150hp Mercury engine and trailer all for £5,999 from Canford Car Sales, who took it in part exchange! sales@ theclockgaragecanfords.co.uk

4

One seller had brought along three boats with a price range to suit all wallets - a Topper dinghy for £650, a Laser for £950 and a 13ft Dory with trailer and engine for £1,500. david@bishton.com Poole Boat Services were displaying two 8ft simulated clinker pram dinghy options, a single skin version for £450 and a twin skin option with stainless steel deck fittings and davit lifting eyes for £850; they will make you one to order. www.pooleboatservices.co.uk Other boats which caught my eye included a beautifully constructed two part pram dinghy which was divided along its centreline and bolted together for use, and could be ‘dismantled’ to fit inside the owner’s van for transport, genius! Finally my favourite was a Starline

5 500, a 5 metre twin-berth day cruiser in great condition; complete with trailer, it was nearly new and the owner claimed it had only been used once. The asking price was £7,500 ONO - surely a bargain for someone, considering it cost £15k

April is another busy month on the boat jumble calendar so why not visit one of these Boat Jumble Association events? The 2012 flagship event is Beaulieu Boat Jumble on 29 April. It is the largest event in Europe with up to 1000 exhibitors and 10,000 attendees.

Gloucester Boat Jumble – 1 April at Gloucester Docks (GL1 2EH) alongside the Waterways Museum in aid of museum projects Plymouth Boat Jumble – Easter Sunday 8 April at City College (PL1 5QG) Norfolk Boat Jumble – 15 April at the Royal Norfolk Showground (NR5 OTT) Northern Ireland Boat Jumble – 22 April at Carrickfurgus Sailing Club (BT38 8BE) Beaulieu Boat Jumble – 29 April at the National Motor Museum Beaulieu near Southampton (SO42 7ZN)

All shows open to the public at 10am and usually run until 3pm. For SATNAV details on any of the mentioned shows or to enquire about selling your own unwanted chandlery items or boat, visit the official Boat Jumble Association web site www.boatjumbles.org.uk

LIFEJACKE T or buoyancy aid?

When you go out on the water one of the essential bits of kit you will need is a lifejacket or buoyancy aid, but what’s difference between the two? Why are they bright colours? What do they do? 1. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BUOYANCY AID AND A LIFEJACKET? A buoyancy aid helps a conscious person stay afloat, whereas a lifejacket will support an unconscious person and keep their face clear of the water.

2. WHICH ONE SHOULD I WEAR?

A buoyancy aid is usually the most appropriate choice if you’re in a dinghy, or doing any other activity where you can expect to go for a swim at some point, and are water confident. A lifejacket is a must if you are out on a bigger boat or go further offshore.

3. WHY ARE LIFEJACKETS OFTEN ORANGE?

Orange is a great colour for lifejackets because it is a very bright colour that you rarely find in nature. If you are trying to rescue someone who has fallen overboard, you need to be able to see them. If they are wearing a bright orange lifejacket you will be better able to see them than if their lifejacket were say, blue or green.

4. CAN I BORROW A LIFEJACKET? Yes you can borrow a lifejacket or buoyancy aid but make sure it fits you properly. But don’t just borrow mum or dad’s, as an adult lifejacket won’t work

THE EXPERIMENT

Q: BRIGHT coloured lifejackets make it easier for you to be spotted, so can you spot all the lifejackets in this picture below? There are three orange and three blue lifejackets… Can you find them all?

on a child.

5. WHAT IS A CROTCH STRAP?

These are the straps that hang at the bottom of your lifejacket/buoyancy aid. Make sure you always wear them as it stops the lifejacket/buoyancy aid riding up over your head and will give you better support.

SO REMEMBER…

■ Get used to wearing your lifejacket when you’re near or on the water. ■ Make sure your lifejacket fits properly – don’t just borrow mum and dad’s as an adult lifejacket won’t work on you. ■ Always use the crotch straps.

Your boats hull is its most valuable asset and carrying out an annual inspection of its condition is a sensible precaution to protect your investment. This modest cost survey would be carried out whilst your boat is already out of the water for either the winter or annual maintenance and would add greatly to the value of this time ashore. Comprehensive survey of hull structure, fittings and underwater components –Including illustrated report. Central South Coast and IOW areas covered.

IN THE DRINK

One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.

Lagers with heritage

Check out the Czechs for the genuine original flavour NO matter how much English real ale enthusiasts enthuse, the fact is that lager is the world’s standard beer. Wherever we sail world over, ‘a beer’ in the local yacht club will be a lager type. Not just global brands such as Heineken or Peroni; every country, from the Caribbean to Australia, in Scandinavia and all around the Mediterranean, has its own local brews, never seen elsewhere. Even if you can’t pronounce the names, it is always worth trying them out as they will have developed to suit local climate and food. The key difference between lager and ale is the yeast performance. Lager is ‘bottom fermentation’, whereby the yeast sinks to the bottom of the fermenting vat and works slowly and at a cool temperature. For English ales or Irish Guinness, the yeast rises for ‘top fermentation’, heating itself up and producing a foamy head in the vat. But the basic raw materials are the same for both: grain (usually barley), hops and water.

THE ORIGINAL LAGER

Lager originated in Bavaria in what is now the Czech Republic. The ‘Original’ moniker is given to Pilsner Urquell, first brewed in 1842, in the town of Pilsen, east of Prague. This is how ‘Pilsner’ (or Pilsener) became the generic word for the new beer genre. However, ‘lager’, referring to the other main product difference, has taken over as the descriptor used globally.

‘Lager’ comes from the German word for ‘storage’. Lager brews are, as they say, ‘lagered’ in cool cellars, often for several weeks before bottling, whereas ales are only kept for a few days. Pilsner Urquell is still brewed in ‘PlzenCzech’ and bottled there for export to UK as the genuine original article (unlike some other ‘foreign’ brands which are brewed here and not ‘imported’ at all). At 4.4 percent abv and a solid golden colour, it has distinct flavour with a pronounced taste of hops from the local Saaz variety used. Retails at £1.97 for a 500ml bottle in my local Waitrose and occasionally can be found on draught in gastro pubs.

much more body and flavour than the American brew. With an authentic Czech taste, it is also £1.97 for 500ml in the supermarket.

Staropramen is the Czech ‘pivo’ (the local term for a beer) most likely to be found on draught in pubs and sailing clubs and is a good pint worth choosing.

Brewed in Prague since 1869 and bottled at 5 percent, it is a bright golden colour with a hoppy aroma and a distinct malty taste. Retails at £1.25 for 330ml bottle.

WHICH BUD IS WHICH?

Budwieser Budvar is brewed, bottled and exported from the town of Budvar (Ceské Budejovice on the map), which lies south of Prague close to the Austrian border. ‘Budweiser’ in the language means ‘coming from the town of Budvar’ and is not to be confused (though it surely is) with the American brand Budweiser. The duplication by the American newcomer led to a trademark war, eventually settled by designating Europe as separate from USA, which it patently is. But in the UK we still have the two Budweisers on our shelves. Buyer beware. First brewed in 1895, the ‘Budweiser Budvar Czech Imported Lager’ definitely came first. Brewed from local barley and Saaz hops and at a solid 5.1 percent, it has
