SUZUKI POWERS SEA CADETS FOR JUBILEE SUZUKI will be providing the outboard power for the Marine Society & Sea Cadets who are taking part in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant. The Sea Cadets will be participating in the Thames Pageant with a 55 strong flotilla of its Trinity 500 boats, which will all be sailing in a diamond formation. The
boats will be helmed by Cadets aged between 12 and 17, who have been selected from different units around the country. Each boat will be powered by one of Suzuki’s 2.5hp four stroke outboard motors. Patrick Balfour, staff officer operations of the Marine Society & Sea Cadets, said: “This is an exciting
event and one in which we are very proud to be participating. Suzuki has been an excellent supporter of the Sea Cadets and due to its light weight and ease of operation, the DF2.5 is perfect for our Trinity 500 boats.” The Suzuki DF2.5 offers a host of features and is extremely light, weighing just 13kg.

New RIB facilities at Yarmouth YARMOUTH Harbour has recently completed the installation of brand new
pontoons, intended to accommodate up to 50 RIBs. Finished on schedule in time for the Easter holidays, the new pontoons are designed for use by small power craft in the busy lunchtime period, allowing them to enter the harbour and berth as conveniently and quickly as possible. The intention is to increase the time spent on the water and in the town, improve safety for all harbour users, and reduce the time spent tying up.
COBRA Seats, long established as a leading supplier of high specification automotive seats, has invested £500,000 in a new engineering facility and can now offer a bespoke service to the leisure marine market. Cobra’s most recent collaboration is with innovative RIB manufacturer, C-Fury. C-Fury’s MD Simon Mcloughlin explains: “The C-Fury is
season in one place.” Visitors will be able to trial boats for sale at the marina including top names such as Jeanneau, Prestige and SeaDoo, and take advantage of the outlet shopping, restaurants and entertainment venues that Gunwharf Quays has to offer. Some of the biggest names in the marine industry have signed up to
appear at the show, including Raymarine, Garmin, Ribeye, Navico, Ribquest and Piranha RIBs, as well as a number of overseas exhibitors. All will have plenty of goods of offer to browse and buy. Also amongst the exhibitions will be disability sports ambassador Geoff Holt MBE’s new 9m Cheetah catamaran powered by two Suzuki 300hp outboards.

MLS UK has launched a Diesel Fuel Purifier, designed to protect engines and generators from the insidious, costly and potentially catastrophic effects of diesel fuel contamination. The incidence of ‘diesel bug’ is growing as governments demand ever higher percentages of bio-diesel to be used. The MLS Fuel Purifier is not a filter, but extracts water, bugs and debris by creating a vortex using a basic centrifugal principle, ‘swirling’ the fuel from the top to the bottom of the unit, where solid contaminants stay until purged. MAY 2012
ALL ABOARD ALL AT SEA Literally, every aspect of being on or by the water becomes relevant; from powerboat racing to motor cruising; round the world yacht racing to Olympic dinghy events; windsurfing, zap-catting, and even far-out new watersports like ‘surf boating’ – (see page 20 if you’re intrigued!). And, from advice about watching the Olympics from Weymouth Beach to news of the RYA’s Active Marina initiative right through to our regular Jumble Watch update, All at Sea is also there when reporting on the huge variety of on-shore events taking place to interest the UK boating community. However, it must be said that, with such a huge and diverse community, it would be wrong to assume that every member of that community takes a keen interest in other aspects of that community, or that that community co-exists harmoniously. Isn’t it an oft-seen sight on a calm and windless day - the angered yachtee stood tall in the cock-pit shaking his fist after the vanishing motor yacht which is zooming away over the horizon at a rate of knots, leaving the sailing yacht dead in the water and bobbing fiercely in its wake… But putting those petty differences aside, one thing the readers of All at Sea would all agree on, is that they love being on the water – and it is this shared passion that forms the backbone of this publication. This brings with it a love of all things nautical, plus a penchant for adventure, whether that be sailing to new waters to explore a new marina yourself, or reading about
intrepid individuals undertaking much bigger challenges like Arctic expeditions and round-Britain circumnavigations. It may be that you’re firmly in one camp or another when it comes to your craft of choice: wind or motor powered, large or small. But, variety as they say, is the spice of life, and being able to report on and celebrate the diversity of the UK’s on the water antics is, for me, a real positive. Added to this is the fact that All at Sea is privileged to have a number of leaders in their field associated with the paper; this month’s brand new Power section is headed up by power boating champion and regular columnist, Shelley Jory Leigh; whilst our new ‘Experts’ Forum’ feature will bring you top advice each month from marine industry experts covering all sorts of boating-related matters. Of course, All at Sea will still continue to cover the cornerstones of the yachting scene; look out for some big regatta previews coming up in future issues, plus we’ll be covering more of the Olympic build up as the countdown continues. In the meantime, this month’s issue is a superb reflection of the diversity of events and activities going on on and around our sea front, and it has been a lot of fun putting this wide-reaching issue together. Whilst I may have my roots in the sailing side of things, like many of you out there I’m sure, salt water is in my blood and if it involves getting out and about on the water, I’m there! We hope this sets a trend for All at Sea going forwards, and look forward to hearing your thoughts on this. What would you like to see more of in All at Sea? Drop me a line at editor@allatsea.co.uk

Clipper course shortened

THE joy of writing for a publication entitled ‘All at Sea’ is that, thanks to its all-encompassing title, we get to cover all sorts of exciting topics when putting each issue together.

The fleet leaves San Francisco at the start of leg 10. Credit onEdition.
COMPETITORS in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race face a shortened course on leg 10 of the 40,000 mile race, which takes them from San Francisco to Panama. With light winds forecast to diminish further, the decision was made in order to ensure the fleet are able to traverse through the Panama Canal at the scheduled canal transit time in advance of the canal’s planned maintenance. Rising temperatures and light, fluky airs have characterised this leg and stinted the fleet’s progress. Race director, Joff Bailey, explains: “The
Clipper Race Committee, chaired by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, has shortened the course for race 10 by selecting one of the pre-existing gates within the Course Instructions as the new finish line. This line is perpendicular to the route and is long enough so that it does not adversely affect any team tactics.” With several of the ten yacht entries in sight of each other, Gold Coast Australia, De Lage Landen and Visit Finland were amongst the frontrunners as this issue of All at Sea went to print. The first teams are expected to reach Panama between 9 and 10 May, where
they will await their slot to pass through the canal before commencing race 11 to New York. The light winds of this leg have cut a stark contrast to the fierce storms encountered on the previous 6,000 mile trans-Pacific leg from Qingdao to San Francisco, which saw the US Coast Guard called to assist the Geraldton Western Australia yacht some 350 miles off the Californian coast; the yacht was hit by a 100ft wave which swept away its steering mounting and wheel, some of its communications equipment and injured four crew members.
UK dinghy circumnavigation attempt 21-YEAR old Ludo Bennett-Jones has set out on a circumnavigation of the UK in his 16ft Wayfarer dinghy. He began the 2,500 mile adventure on 28 April from Cowes. The adventurer from North Oxford aims to raise £100,000 for Sports Relief and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Ludo is also attempting to break two world records and hopes to become the
youngest person to sail a dinghy around the UK in the shortest time. Speaking ahead of the challenge, Ludo said: “My parents have vetoed solo offshore racing for the moment so I made a compromise; sailing around Britain in a dinghy to raise funds for two charities with which I have been directly involved. This expedition will certainly be testing, but I am sure that it will be
an amazing experience for incredibly worthwhile causes”. Ludo is an experienced sailor and an RYA Ocean Yachtmaster; he will have a full support team travelling in tandem. He will be joined by equally experienced sailors along various legs, stopping at sailing clubs on the way and making approximately 50 stopovers in total. www.LoveLudo.com.

ISLAND DOUBLE
OVER 100 boats will be vying to break Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s double handed Round the Island record on 5 May. Early starts, brisk winds and an unusual east-about course could see the current monohull record of 5 hrs 58 mins 38 secs set in 2009 by Class 40 Concise beaten. The multihull record remains unbeaten since 1996, set by firebird Catamaran Phoenix in 4hrs 44mins 29secs.
ROYAL BALL
GREAT Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic-bound sailors are to receive a royal send-off following confirmation that HRH The Princess Royal will attend the coveted 2012 Sail for Gold Ball on 13 June at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Funds raised from the Ball help to support future generations of Skandia Team GBR sailors in achieving their medal-winning ambitions. For ticket applications, visit www.sailforgoldball.co.uk
A British team is preparing to re-enact Sir Ernest Shackleton’s voyage aboard the James Caird using a replica lifeboat. The 23ft ‘Alexandra Shackleton’ will be based at Dean & Readyhoff’s Portland Marina over the next year, whilst she undergoes fittings and sea trials in preparation for the expedition in December 2012. Visitors to the marina this summer will be able to see the ‘Alexandra Shackleton’ with her running rigging intact.
HARBOUR HAZARD
MARINERS are being advised to exercise caution after an 11 metre fishing vessel sank in the approaches to Langstone Harbour approximately 0.6 miles SSW of the Langstone Fairway pile in position: 50° 45´.816 N, 001° 01´.758 W.
PADDLE POWER
The team of adventurers led by renowned explorer and scientist Tim Jarvis, will attempt to re-enact Shackleton’s 800 mile voyage across the Southern Ocean. Three men will then attempt to reach the (now abandoned) whaling station of Stromness, where Shackleton raised the alarm to rescuers during the ill-fated Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition of 1914-17.
Lifeboat ‘Alexandra Shackleton’ was named by Shackleton’s granddaughter, the Hon Alexandra Shackleton in a recent ceremony at Portland Marina.
The ‘Alexandra Shackleton’ has already undergone sea trials in Portland; the boat was deliberately capsized five times to test self righting characteristics. It is estimated that the boat
will cover an average 48 miles per day at a speed of 2 knots. However, Southern Ocean currents, winds and ice drifts will be major obstacles. To date, no-one has
replicated Shackleton’s feat. In order to relive Shackleton’s experience with the greatest possible authenticity, the six-man crew will only use technology, vittals and equipment that would have been available at the time of the original mission in 1916.
HALCYON Yachts, specialists in international yacht deliveries by sea, has been asked to deliver a brand new 16ft Canadian canoe from Northern Shropshire to Gloucester. Unusually, two professional sailors will paddle her the whole way down the Severn. Director, Peter Green, explains that the client, initially looking for a courier company, jokingly made the suggestion that Halcyon could deliver his canoe by ‘sea’. The company has agreed to deliver the canoe in return for a small donation to the RNLI, and hopes to complete the paddle challenge in less than seven days.

City charity makes a splash CITY of London Corporation charity, the City Bridge Trust, has announced awards to the AHOY Centre and the Docklands Sailing Centre intended to get more Londoners out on the water. The RYA recognised training centres, both of which are charities, have been awarded £79,000 over three years and £45,200 respectively. The Trust’s funding will support AHOY’s Deptford-based Sailability programme, which will benefit an additional 40 disabled young people each year. The charity will also be organising ‘taster’ sessions, allowing disabled visitors to get out onto the Thames and try sailing or power boating. Docklands Sailing Centre operates from award-winning facilities in the heart of London’s Docklands, and will use the Trust’s award to improve the quality of access to the centre, ensuring that its sailing, kayaking and dragon-boating activities remain open to everyone. Enhancements will include significant improvements to the disabled changing facilities.

The pontoon has been doubled in length and a floating ramp installed which will benefit all yacht sailors arriving at the club by water and significantly improve launching and landing arrangements for young and disabled sailors. The improvements represent an investment of £23,000 and have been funded by the club and its members.

Busy in the Firth
Kinghorn lifeboat volunteers launched three times in four days in response to reports of disabled vessels in the Firth of Forth. On 10 April, the skipper of a small fishing vessel called for help after his boat suffered gearbox failure and began taking on water off Port Seton. The inshore lifeboat crew towed the stricken
boat into harbour. The following day, the crew responded to reports of a yacht aground at Fisherrow Harbour, east of Edinburgh. A 20ft yacht, with three men aboard, had been driven aground on the beach following an attempt to rescue another, smaller vessel that had also got into difficulties at around 5.50pm.

Kinghorn lifeboat out on exercise
said: “We were tasked after a would-be rescuer who got into difficulty. Whilst this action was admirable, we would always recommend that you call the Coastguard first, and then risk assess the conditions and circumstances before making a rescue attempt yourself. Fortunately, the beach was sandy, so no significant damage occurred. “Both incidents serve as a timely reminder that boats should be serviced following a long winter layup. You should also carry tools and safety equipment, and a means of communication, such as a VHF radio. “If you do get into difficulty, you should call the Coastguard as soon as possible so they can provide any necessary assistance.” The lifeboat had also been called out on 8 April to reports of a broken down jet-ski off Pettycur Bay, but this turned out to be a false alarm with good intent.

The smaller vessel had suffered engine failure when leaving the harbour and was driven aground by the northeasterly wind and waves. The yacht then attempted to tow the casualty vessel away from the beach, but ended up getting into difficulty too. Volunteer lifeboat helm, Leanne Fisher, who was on board during both rescues,

CONTROL YOUR POWER
ACTISENSE, the market leading marine electronics brand from Active Research Limited, has recently launched the QPD-1. This Quick Power Drop device has been specifically designed with safety in mind to help operators gain a convenient and safe method for connecting a power source to a National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 2000® network. Making boat owners’ and operators’ lives easier and safer when dealing with a boat’s power control, the QPD-1 is available in two versions: QPD-1-PMW allows ‘plug and play’ connections to a backbone with micro-fit M12 connectors; whilst QPD-1-GLA has terminal block connectors to allow easy connection of NMEA 2000® bulk cable lengths. Easily visible LEDs provide simple diagnostic indicators of the power feed, so you don’t have to rely on additional display devices to determine power presence and polarity. BOOKS
Looking to brush up on your knowledge or perhaps just wind down after a day on the water? All at Sea brings you a selection of the latest literary offerings.
BY GEORGIE CORLETT
PASS YOUR YACHTMASTER – 5TH EDITION
THE LONELY SEA AND THE SKY
FIRST published in 1964, Sir Francis Chichester’s autobiography is by no means a ‘new release’. But 45 years on from the voyage that saw him become the first person to sail solo around the world from west to east, this first-hand account of ardour and intrepid adventure will still hold today’s readers captivated. Chronicling his endeavours by sea, air and land, Chichester writes in a raw and honest style, giving the reader a fascinating insight into his life, travels and achievements as a good old-fashioned adventurer. Author: Sir Francis Chichester Price: £9.99 • Web: www.summersdale.com
THIS succinct book provides a handbook-style guide for aspiring Yachtmasters taking on the shoredbased theory course. Described as a ‘crammer’ course, it covers all the essentials of the RYA syllabus – navigation, weather and safety - in an order that’s deliberately designed for easy revision. Highlighted sections pick out essential learning points and make them easy to remember; whilst the no-nonsense text is interspersed with light-hearted anecdotal illustrations from co-author and well-known yachting cartoonist, Mike Peyton. At just over 100 pages, this book manages to present a daunting subject in a manageable and easy-to-digest style. Author: David Fairhall and Mike Peyton Price: £9.99 Web: www.adlardcoles.com
SWATCHWAY MAGIC
CRUISING UNDER POWER
DUBBED ‘a collection of contemporary yarns around the East Coast Swatchways of Essex and Suffolk by water and land’ this book retraces the forays made in Maurice Griffiths’ 1932 book ‘The Magic of the Swatchways’. Far from a pilot guide, it’s a collection of tales intended to capture the imagination. The adventures of the locallyborn authors (one of who is All at Sea’s very own Paul Antrobus) are recounted at an amicable pace that gently sweeps the reader along, as they navigate tricky backwaters, sample riverside pubs, explore historic relics and take in peaceful anchorages. With an introduction by Bob Fisher, who also has his roots in the area, this is an enjoyable and absorbing read. Author: Paul Antrobus and Charles Scoones Price: £14.95 • Web: www.delancypress.co.uk
CRUISING under Power offer readers a wealth of practical know-how to make the most of their motor cruising experience. Guiding the reader through every stage of preparation and planning, it is designed to instill confidence in executing a cruise in a safe and seamanlike manner. Information is given in a clear and very comprehensive style; with sections broken down and clearly marked, this book could easily act as a quick reference guide if needs be, although novice cruisers will no doubt be happy to read it cover to cover ahead of embarking on their first major passage. Author: Dag Pike Price: £20 • Web: www.adlardcoles.com

RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
As RYA Olympic Development Squad Manager, Barrie Edgington, explains: “Our team spirit is always one of the most talked about elements of Skandia Team GBR’s success. The sailors, coaches and support team are a close-knit group. The impact of this bond on whole team performance is unquestionable. If you can’t get excited about that you’re in the wrong game.” Yet this is not where the ‘team’ stops. Beyond this core of UK Sport National Lottery-funded hands-on expertise sits another layer of equally critical but more peripheral support – friends, family, team sponsors and suppliers, the RYA, local sailing clubs, class associations. It is this whole infrastructure that has made not only the sailing world sit up and take notice of how Britain’s

sailors have been the most consistently successful since 2000, but other British sports too, which are now using sailing’s model to develop their own sport. The sailors don’t need reminding just how lucky they are.
The team behind the team It’s often said that the British sailing team is the envy of the world.
THE strength of this team - that has both struck fear into and inspired the world’s other major nations in equal measure, particularly over the past 12 years - goes

far beyond the sailors who present the public, podium-topping face of the operation. Skandia Team GBR, as the British Sailing Team in the Olympic and Paralympic classes has been known since 2006, is an intricate, highly-integrated network of specialists, experts and partners covering

the whole gamut of sailing performance. At its core sit coaches, sports scientists - including physiologists, psychologists and nutritionists - physiotherapists and medics, a meteorologist, technical projects experts, performance analysts, operations, logistics and communications experts, a lifestyle adviser, sports massage therapist, and of course, management. This whole operation is headed-up, overseen and co-ordinated by team manager, Stephen ‘Sparky’ Park. Each element is an independent specialism in its own right but all of these individual facets are finelybalanced and interwoven to produce a potent, combined outcome that has led to Britain winning medal after medal. Talent, commitment and attitude can get you so far but the team behind you can be the difference between a podium finish or not.
WHAT THE SAILORS SAY...
Luke Patience (selected men’s 470 helm for London 2012) – “The British sailing team support staff has always been amazing; there is no wrong time or place to ask them anything.” Kate Macgregor (one third of the selected Match Race Girls team) – “Our coach Maurice has broken things down in our campaign and challenged us to look at things differently.” Saskia Clark (selected women’s 470 crew for London 2012) – “We’re really lucky to have help in our boat development from Peter Bentley, RYA Technical Projects manager who has been a major part of Britain’s success over the past 20 years. Peter just knows how to make things work well on a boat. His hobbies include flying so he is a great one for coming up with slightly offbeat ideas and many of Peter’s seemingly more wacky ideas end up on medal-winning British boats!” Nick Dempsey (selected men’s RS:X windsurfer) – “Paul Mullan, the Skandia Team GBR physiologist, is an integral part of my team. I also have daily contact with Steve Gent, the team’s strength and conditioning expert. We tweak and test, putting my body under masses of different stresses to see what makes the difference and what doesn’t; everything is scientifically recorded so we can tell very quickly how my body responds.”
ALWAYS SUNNY!
MEET SKANDIA TEAM GBR METEOROLOGIST, LIBBY GREENHALGH... “I’VE been the team’s weather forecaster, covering all the weather and tide requirements from an education, research and forecasting angle, since 2007. Having previously sailed a 470 to a reasonably high standard definitely helped me understand what the key weather considerations for a racing sailor are. It also helped I knew quite a few of the team members already. “At an event I have an early start, usually between 5.30am and 6am. I prepare a forecast for the day ready to provide a briefing for the coaches and sailors. “I can’t give away my trade secrets but there are a variety of weather models freely available that I use to predict the weather we can expect and cross comparison is always good. During the day I continue monitoring real-time data and provide updates to the coaches and sailors where necessary. At around 7pm, a debrief is usually held where we discuss what happened over the day. “Meteorological knowledge within the squad of sailors varies. A large part of my role is to improve the education of the sailors so that they have a better understanding and can use the information where necessary to make better decisions. “Weather forecasting is probably one of the few jobs in the world where you can sometimes get it wrong and not lose your job! I like to think that when the forecast does go wrong there is generally a significant amount of uncertainty conveyed within the initial forecast of the day. There is the usual banter in the team when it doesn’t quite go according to plan! But on a dayto-day basis when things do go spot on and confidence is instilled in the forecast that is the real buzz of my job.” Want to know more about Skandia Team GBR and the people behind the team? SURF BOATING
All at Sea takes a look at one of the wildest new sports to hit the UK’s waters, as Bournemouth Surf Boat Club shows us what its all about.
It’s rowIng, but not as you know It!
Bournemouth’s newly refurbished surf boat.
forget the sophistication of river rowing at henley on thames, public school etiquette and pimms.

Bournemouth girl’s team win European silver.
What is surf boating?
Crews of four rowers and a specialist coxswain, called a ‘sweep’, line up beside their boats in knee deep surf, waiting for the starter’s whistle. A few metres away white water pounds the beach.
At the whistle the crews leap into their boats and row hard and fast into the breaking surf to get as much speed as possible. The boats plough head on into the waves, the crews rowing hard to maintain momentum, no matter what. The sweeps ride their surf boats like Ben Hur chariot racing gladiators, their shouts of encouragement a cracking whip to drive their rowers onwards. 400 or 500 metres from the beach, the crews ‘handbrake turn’ around buoys and increase their stroke rate, rowing faster to catch a big wave and earn a free ride home. Once surfing, the rowers lie back and ‘trail oars’ over their heads, then hurry to the back of the boat so their combined weight lifts the bow as they cling on and surf wildly towards the beach. As soon as they reach shallow water, the bow rower jumps out and sprints to the finish line. The racing is fast, frantic and exhilarating for both competitors and spectators. This spectacular watersport is run by the UK surf rowers League (www.uksrl.co.uk) which organises a summer race series in
some stunning locations in Bournemouth, Devon, Cornwall and wales.
hollyWood-inspired
Bournemouth surf Boat Club was formed three years ago by ellis Haggar and Mark Green following their part as marine crew in the climactic battle sequence of ridley scott’s $200M epic, robin Hood. enthused by their Hollywood adventure, ellis and Mark began looking for a surfboat. A chance conversation with Bournemouth Council’s seafront supervisor, steen stones, and sports and recreation manager, Matt Lloyd, prompted the rediscovery of an exAustralian surfboat sat rotting on a trailer in Bournemouth. Built some 22 years ago in Bulii, south west Australia, she had been gathering moss after a four year lay-up. But thanks to 18 months of hard work by John Clarke, Matt williams and club members, the newly refurbished boat will lead the surf boat contingent for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on 3 June. Despite being the newest club to join
the UKsrL, Bournemouth girl’s team won a silver medal in the 2011 european surf rowing Championships, and both the men and women’s teams finished in fourth place in the UK championship. The club has an ethos of ‘having fun on the water’ and welcomes all new members, regardless of ability or experience.
INTERESTED? If this has sparked your interest, contact the club’s president, Ellis Hagger via the club’s Facebook page, ellishaggar@live.com or 07825 215536. Club members will also be on Bournemouth beach every Thursday evening throughout the summer to help promote British Rowing’s Explore Rowing initiative.

GREEN FOCUS
A joint BMF and RYA initiative
The Green Blue is the joint environment programme created by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association to encourage sustainable boating in all its forms.
ALEX WATKINS, THE GREEN BLUE
A Day in the life of…Alex Watkins The Green Blue, development officer SO this morning I’m donning my formal Green Blue branded shirt to catch the Red Jet over to Cowes to meet Becky Scott, a member of the Artemis Offshore Academy. Becky’s two year campaign is focused on the Mini Transat 2013, but the next key event on the Classe Mini Calendar is the Azores Race on 29 July. With a background in environmental science, Becky is keen to explore ways to make her Mini campaign and Basecamp, her Mini 6.50, as green as possible with The Green Blue’s input, looking at energy, materials and products and the overall carbon footprint of the campaign. Always keen to climb on board, Becky gave me a great insight into how such a small boat can travel across the second biggest ocean in the world! Follow Becky’s blog: www.beckyscottracing.com
It was then back on the Red Jet and straight to a local yacht club to discuss ways to prevent pollution thanks to a new pilot initiative between The Green Blue and the Environment Agency - just one part of our work to help the EA with its obligations to deliver the Water Framework Directive, which aims to enhance and protect the quality of our inland and coastal waters. This is a great initiative, enabling us to offer club members and marina berth holders a selection of bilge socks, fuel collars, phosphate free washing up liquid and tarpaulins - practical kit that will make an immediate difference . As always, I took the opportunity to walk around the club (usually starting with a look in the bins) to see if I could spot any ways for the club to improve its
waste management by recycling more (cheaper than sending waste to landfill), and reducing energy and water usage, another way to save money.
SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS
After lunch it’s back to the office briefly to organise my notes before driving over to Port Solent. Since 2008 The Green Blue has been working with Sunsail to help it to make its fleet of Beneteau F40s more sustainable, and to improve the waste management facilities and energy efficiency on site. The boats are now stocked with Ecover, plastic recycled mugs with ‘Did you know facts’ to ponder on over coffee,
fuel collars to catch drips when refuelling and just recently have been fitted with inline bilge filters. Environmental tips are built into the standard operating procedures and given out in the annual skippers’ briefing. All in all, a great example of a marine company leading the way in sustainability. Then, with the day nearly over I head back to the office once again to arrange a few more site visits. My next visit will take me up to the East Midlands to
a small dinghy club looking to install rainwater harvesting facilities to be used for washing down boats and flushing toilets in the club house; a good time to use our case studies to learn from other facilities who have been through the same process with great success: Helensburgh Sailing Club and Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy to name just two. And with the papers talking of a similar drought to 1976, it’s a perfect time to look at recycling water!

If you’re going out and about on the water then it’s important that you keep warm and dry so that you can enjoy yourself and avoid getting cold and fed up. So wearing the right kit for the boating you do is essential. IF you’re a dinghy sailing fan or simply love windsurfing then you might find yourself in the water from time to time so wearing a wetsuit is a very good choice; it will keep you warm when you get wet. A wetsuit works by trapping a layer of water between your skin and the neoprene of the wetsuit which your body heats up and keeps you warm, although it might be a little chilly the first time you fall in! You will probably also need other bits of kit such as wetsuit boots, a lightweight and waterproof top to go over your wetsuit, gloves, and a hat. Perhaps sailing on a bigger boat is more up your street, such as a motor cruiser or sailing yacht. As there is often
more room on a bigger boat you can take a bag with extra clothing and kit in it. You’ll need different kinds of clothing depending upon the weather so check if you need shorts or waterproofs, sun hat or warm hat? But always remember the sunscreen whatever the weather, as the effects of the sun are always more intense at sea. If you like something a bit speedier like a jet ski or a powerboat then your kit not only keeps you warm but will also keep you safe so don’t forget your helmet, back protector and gloves. And remember, whatever boating you do, make sure you always wear your life jacket or buoyancy aid.
RYA YOUTH AND JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP
REMEMBER…
It is often much cooler on the water than on shore, so here are some top tips to keep you warm: ■ If you can, take spare layers in case you get wet or need to add more clothes ■ Fleeces and thermals will keep you toastie warm and are lightweight – you don’t want to wear anything too heavy or bulky ■ The key to staying warm is staying dry so make sure you wear the right kit ■ Check the weather forecast before you go afloat as this will help know if the weather is likely to change All you need to do now is get your kit on and hit the water…
Want to join the RYA? Well we now have special memberships just for younger members. Junior – up to age of 11. engine servicing with r.K. marine
get set for summer
Did you winterise your boat engine properly last year? It seems strange to talk about winterising boat engines this time of year when we should be servicing them and getting them ready for your summer boating activities or already using them, but I will explain. Think about your boating activities over a 12 month period. Let’s begin at the traditional start of the UK’s boating season, which is March/April. Most boat owners want to go boating over the first double bank holiday weekend when the weather can be warm and sunny (we hope) and we have the added advantage of extra daylight hours. The Easter Bank Holiday weekend is and always has been the start of the boating season for UK boaters. Some of us have been lucky
enough to have the boat engine serviced, hull antifouled and have the boat in the water for that weekend. Some of us have had even better luck with the weather and have had a great weekend boating. From then it is good weather, more bank holiday weekends and more daylight until October. That amounts to eight months’ worth of boating every year. Now think about work and family commitments over those eight months and that boating time is reduced depending on your circumstances. The great British weather can reduce boating time too. Therefore, in order to make the most of your total boating time and get the
Renew component parts regularly.
best value for money out of your boat, it needs to be fully operational for those eight months (or less depending on circumstances). It follows that, to get the best return on your boat - great boating and boating memories that you cherish for many years - you need to be organised. Organisations that require machinery to perform a task without fault or failure for a required period always schedule and budget for planned machinery maintenance. The aviation industry, manufacturing companies and the military are the best examples of this. A machinery operator from one of these organisations will want a machine to run without fault or failure or stopping for servicing over a set period before starting its next task. The period before it starts its next task is the time when planned maintenance (servicing) takes place. To reduce risk of fault or failure during the set running period, they will also carry out preventative maintenance (replacing worn and suspect parts). Now if we use this planning process to ensure our machinery (boat engines)
will be able to perform our task (enjoyable boating) for our required period (March until October), then we should schedule our planned maintenance Preventative maintenance can help maximise potential time on the water. and preventative as per the engine manufacturer’s maintenance between October requirements. Nick back in 2010 at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta.
Backed by steely determination and years of experience, Nick Dempsey is ready to give it his all on home waters this summer. NORWICH-born Nick Dempsey began windsurfing at the age of seven and has never looked back, making his Olympic debut at the age of 20 at the Sydney Games. In 2004, he then became the first ever Briton to win an Olympic medal in windsurfing, when he won the bronze medal in Athens. That was his second Olympics; London 2012 will be his fourth. At the 2008 Games, he was cruelly denied a medal in a dramatic final race; but the bitter disappointment of finishing in fourth place four years ago has spurred Nick on. Since 2008, Nick has made Weymouth his home, together with wife, Sarah Ayton, herself a double Olympic gold medalist, and their two sons; the couple
married just months after the 2008 Games.
I will be in the zone; just concentrating on my racing and being in the moment.
Nick competing in the 2011 Princess Sofia Trophy.
In emphatic style, Nick has stamped his mark on the waters of Weymouth, winning the RS:X windsurfing World Championship title there in 2009, and the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta there in June 2011, topping this off with silver at the official Test Event at the Olympic
venue later that year. Silver at the recent 2012 RS:X Windsurfing World Championships, held at the end of March in Cadiz, Spain, confirms Nick Dempsey is well on track for podium position on his home waters later this year.
WATCH FROM THE BEACH FOR those who missed out on tickets to watch the sailing from Nothe Gardens, the venue of Weymouth and Portland still promises to be a fantastic place to soak up the Olympic atmosphere, with a mega beach party and a live screening site planned. From 12 noon until 6pm daily, Weymouth Beach will host a free of charge 2012 Olympic Live Site, with two giant screens showing the full sailing action, plus regular updates
from other Olympic events brought to you by the BBC. The site will entertain up to 15,000 people at any one time, hosting a lively throng of people soaking up the atmosphere. The Live Site will also be host to an eclectic mix of musical, theatrical and cultural performances, as part of the Maritime Mix - the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea, with something for everyone promised. Next to the Live Site, there will also be an interactive Sports Arena, giving

AAS: Describe yourself in three words? ND: I’ve been called windsurfing’s ‘Mr Nice Guy’ – however I prefer ‘rock and roll’! AAS: Describe your sport in three words? ND: Fast, brutal, rewarding AAS: What is the biggest difference between Olympic windsurfing and the other sailing disciplines? ND: Windsurfing is pretty different technique-wise, but in principle the racing is very similar. One big difference is that my training is more fitness focused than any other class, so I generally spend more time in the gym than on the water. AAS: Greatest achievements to date? ND: My bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and winning the World Championships in Weymouth in 2009 are two of the biggest highlights in my sailing career. AAS: How did you feel when you heard you’d been selected for the 2012 Games, this being your fourth Olympic Games? ND: I felt pretty chilled to be honest;
I was lucky enough not to have the same pressures as some of the other members of the team. AAS: In 2008 you came so close to a medal at the Beijing Games; how did that experience affect you? ND: Deeply! AAS: Ok, enough said! Have you altered your approach at all this time around? ND: No; I felt I did everything right in the build up to Beijing and sailed one of the best regattas of my life. I had changed the whole way I sailed for Beijing and improved so much in the light winds. Two years earlier I’d finished 14th at the Olympic Test Event and at the Games, had the medal race gone to plan, I could have won gold. So really I had campaigned very well. I simply wish I could have done the medal race again! AAS: Has your wife [Sarah Ayton OBE, double Olympic gold medalist] been able to offer any support, considering her past achievements? ND: Yes and no. She is a full time mum and the boys are her main priority. My sailing is my work and I try to keep work and family life quite separate – however, she is a very supportive and understanding wife! AAS: What are you most looking forward to about competing on home waters? ND: Having my family and friends be a part of the whole experience. AAS: What will be your biggest
challenge during the Games? Any major rivals to look out for? ND: Lots of rivals, including New Zealand’s JP Tobin, and Holland’s Dorian Van Rijssel-berge. The biggest challenge will be with myself and avoiding a repeat performance of 2008. AAS: What will you be thinking about as you cross the start line of the first race of the Olympics? ND: I will be in the zone; just concentrating on my racing and being in the moment. AAS: What tips will you be giving your fellow Team GB sailors who are competing in the Olympics for the first time this year? ND: Don’t enjoy yourself too much. Work hard, keep your head down and stay close to those you trust. AAS: Favourite thing to do away from sailing? ND: Proper windsurfing. I also enjoy surfing, cycling, golf and photography. AAS: Which car do you drive (and which car would you like to have?!) ND: I am taking delivery this week of my new Volvo V60 T6 polestar. Very, very excited! Same answer for both questions. AAS: If you could take any one in the world out on your windsurfer, who would that be and why? ND: My eldest son Thomas - I am so looking forward to taking him windsurfing and I think he will love it.

Conditions caused problems even for the specially trained Safety Crews.
RNLI Members of the Zapcat Safety Crew ensure the safety of the ZCR50 Class.
THE offshore season for 2012 is finally underway. The first event of the 2012 RYA National Championships took place at Fistral, Newquay, from 21-22 April. The event saw 14 Zapcat teams battle with almighty surf conditions and unyielding onshore winds, producing some of the harshest conditions teams have seen in recent years.
I had the opportunity to have a go in a Zapcat a few years ago. That was in sunny Solent conditions and, despite being great fun, it’s not a class I’d jump at the chance to race in - let alone in pounding
surf - so I can only begin to imagine what the teams feel like after this tough weekend. Of the 14 teams that started the battle this year to become British RYA Zapcat Champion, five brand new ‘Rookie’ teams joined the fleet. Having been put through their paces during race training, they then received a real baptism of fire that even experienced crews wrestled with. The action was immense with the teams battling throughout 12 heats of racing on each day to secure a place in Sunday’s two finals. The fleet split into weight categories with crews of a
combined weight of 26.5 stone or over racing in the ZCR50X class, and those under in the ZCR50 class.
LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
Royal Marine Powerboat Racing Team Captain, Richie Lake, told me why the new weight classes introduced in 2011 had made the racing so much more interesting; “Weight and the distribution of weight in these boats really affect your performance in the championship. “We have five Royal Marine teams competing this year and we’re all quite big guys. Before the weight introduction
your team could have a combined weight of around 30 stone and be racing against teams with a combined weight of just over 20 stone - that’s a lot of difference and you knew that unless lighter boats made a mistake, you couldn’t beat them.” “With the new spilt you find yourself on more of a level playing field and the racing is a lot closer. When it’s closer it’s a lot more fun, as you’re pushing each other all the time, which in turn will improve your racing skills as you’ll have to race more tactically when it comes to flat water events. Here at Fistral it’s all about keeping the boat upright and making it

around the course.” Class honours on Saturday in the ZCR50 class went to Team Essence (Jamie Stickler and Nathan Parker). The ZCR50x class was won by Royal Marine team 37, RM State of Mind (Richie Lake and Andy Farmer). Sunday’s racing was won by Crest of a Wave No 12 (Pat Moger and Paul Rush) in the ZCR50 class, and Royal Marines Contact Wait Out brothers (Paul Holt and Mark Holt) in No 14 in the ZCR50x class. For the first time ever the Fistral Grand Prix win went down to a tie with no way of splitting the points of Team Essence and RM State of Mind; even counting back through their heat results, and so the organisers declared a draw. A notable performance came from the Rookie Marine team No 42 Fire for Effect (Richard Wright and Lee Head) who secured silver and bronze medals, and were one of few boats which managed to remain upright throughout the weekend. They now take the lead in the Rookie Championship.

PROPERTY
Property is a special section spotlighting the best residential and commercial developments by the waterside and along the coast. Peter Halliday from Waterside Properties reports.
LIVING ON THE WATER
Antipodean alternatives An island nation like the UK, New Zealand has lots of coastline, river and lake frontage, much of it remote and unspoilt. A similar size to the UK but with only 8% of the population, there is less call for high rise and more call for spreading out when it comes to housing. Since Captain Cook and the onset of colonisation in the 1770s, Brits have been making their way to a new life in New Zealand. Despite being such a long way away, there are many who want to start anew and New Zealand can offer a fresh, outdoor, uncluttered appeal, not available to many back home. Brits are not the only ones. We
encountered settlers from all parts of Europe, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Poland, as well as Malaysia, China, Japan - a real cross section.
Kiwi hot spots
First of all, there doesn’t appear to be a shortage of quality property on the market. Wherever we went there was a good selection of waterfront property presented by agents for sale. In recessionary times, New Zealand agents prefer auction or best offer tenders preceded by open days to attract buyers and achieve fair market price, as opposed to the guide prices or fixed prices prevalent in the UK. Maybe we should learn something from this. Agents and pundits are claiming, as in the UK, a fall in demand with current sales volumes reported at 61% of 2007 levels. This in part is put down

to the global recession, with fewer visitors looking to buy from traditional catchment areas such as the UK, but also New Zealand has received a significant kick in the teeth with the recent devastating earthquake in Christchurch.
River front property in Keri Keri - £400,000.
Prices to that point had risen by 87% in the previous five years, and since then, (subject to local variations) have fallen, but on average by only 5.7% , not as far as in the UK. Hot spots include Auckland and the environs in North Island, home to over 50% of all resident New Zealanders, and Queenstown, the self-proclaimed adrenaline capital of the world in South Island. Here land is expensive, still sought after, and prices remain relatively high. We travelled to more remote parts such as Keri Keri near the Bay of Islands in the north of the North Island, a glorious sailing area shared with wild dolphins and rare blue penguins, and also to Akaroa, an hour’s drive south of Christchurch on the South Island. This town was colonised by the French and is
Bay of Islands - a sailor’s paradise.
scenically located inside a flooded extinct volcano; it’s now a centre for the New Zealand blue pearl industry.
the bottom line
A four bedroom, 3000 square foot single storey home in Keri Keri with four acres of river front land would set you back around £400,000; whilst a three bedroom elevated house with large deck giving unforgettable 180 degree uninterrupted harbour views in the best part of Akaroa comes in at similar money. We concluded that although average property prices in New Zealand (£191,000) are higher than in the UK (£167,000) convert that to a per square
foot price and you can get similar bang for your buck waterside property wise in New Zealand compared to the UK, even in these hardened times. So, if it’s time for a life change with tall mountains interspersed with wide open plains, blue lakes and seas, exceptional beaches, deep forests, seasons that we already know about and so much space that you can drive for hours without seeing a living soul, then New Zealand offers a seductive alternative. But it is an awfully long way away! If you are looking try: www.bayleys.co.nz www.harcourts.co.nz Both agents have offices nationwide.
AAS1111 CB Richard Ellis
A recent trip to new Zealand gave a casual opportunity to take a look at a housing market on the other side of the world and to compare it to our own waterfront property sector here in the UK, a casualty of a ‘global’ recession.

Emsworth Yacht Harbour CHICHESTER
Chichester Harbour has always been considered something of a gem of the south coast. Its sheltered waters and narrow channels open out into a beautiful vista of open water as the tide rolls in, becoming a playground for watercraft of all types. Set against a backdrop of the rolling hills of the South Downs, boasting several beautiful villages dotted around its shores and a million creeks and inlets to explore, this is cruising heaven. Well, at least until the tide rolls out again and leaves you high and dry if you’re not careful.

Emsworth Yacht Harbour Thorney Road, Emsworth, Hants, PO10 8BP Tel: +44 (0) 1243 377727 www.emsworth-marina.co.uk.
THANKFULLY, Chichester also has more than its fair share of tempting havens and marinas to await the next tide; amongst them, Emsworth Yacht Harbour has long been acknowledged as a bit of a hidden treasure. Tucked away at the top of the Emsworth Channel, this cheerful little marina boasts 220 fully serviced berths, a couple of boatbuilders on site, a chandler and a newly opened cafe. Despite its tidal location, its sill also means it has a maintained depth of 2m within. Perhaps its biggest attraction, however, is the fact that the marina has retained a friendly atmosphere, aided by the fact that this is still very much a family run business. This atmosphere is augmented
by its proximity to the village of Emsworth, which is a five minute walk away and has a friendly, slow paced charm, boasting such novelties as a grocer, a baker and a decent hardware store. The village was originally a thriving fishing community, and Emsworth oysters were considered a delicacy. Emsworth boasted the largest local sailing fishing boat fleet in the UK and had 30 pubs to show for it. These days the oyster beds are long gone, and yachts have moved in to replace the majority of the fishing boats. Nevertheless, it’s worth keeping an eye out for the restored oyster boat Terror on a fair day. She generally takes tourists out
on day sails, and cuts a pretty picture as she plies the Emsworth Channel.
BERTHING & FACILITIES
Emsworth has plenty to offer berth holders and visitors alike, including water, electricity, showers and WiFi. In addition to this, there is a large slipway and drying grid. The marina also boasts smart new toilets, showers and a new launderette under the Deck Cafe. There is a fuel berth within the marina which also sells Calor Gas. For repairs, Nick Gates and Andrew Oliver both run shipwright businesses side by side in the marina. www.nickgates.co.uk and www.andrewoliver.co.uk

Why i love it
Peter Pochon built his Spray 28 Merganser too in his garden near Reading. Having done this, Peter had the pick of south coast marinas to choose from. Peter explains: “Initially when I looked at emsworth it just seemed like good value and a pleasant place to have a boat, as Chichester Harbour is that little bit quieter than the Solent. “the village has a lot of charm and also a pleasant feeling of community to it. It’s a friendly marina and generally people here are very sociable, so it all adds up to a nice package. “emworth is very tidal, which some people think will be a problem, but I have never had too much of an issue. Miss the tide and you can either moor up on the piles outside of the marina for a few hours or wait further down the emsworth Channel on the visitor’s pontoon.”

The passage into the Chichester Harbour is unique and different to Langstone and Portsmouth for one important reason. The harbour is home to over 10,000 boats and there are over 18nm of navigable waterways inside the harbour. All these boats and all this water must enter and leave through the narrow entrance and to reach the sea they must cross over the Chichester Bar - a rise of sand right in the middle of the entrance channel. Crossing the bar is easy as long as you abide by the three basic rules: 1. Before leaving Chichester Harbour always consult the Chimet Data Buoy www.chimet.co.uk – the data is recorded at the Bar Beacon and provides a real picture of conditions, including wind speed, direction and strength, sea state and tides. 2. Avoid the bar over the last two hours of the ebb. 3. If there is a southerly wind, the smoothest water will be found within HW±1 - outward bound, it pays to fight against the last of the flood from your berth in order to avoid the worst of the seas at the Bar. When approaching the Bar from the west it’s important to stay well south of the shoals off Langstone and Chichester Harbour. Horse Sands Fort sits right on the latitude of 50°45’ and a good guide for yachts is not to venture north of that latitude – use a back bearing on the Fort not less than 270°. It’s also important to avoid the temptation of turning north too early once you’ve past Winner - stay just south of the 50°45’ latitude until the Eastoke Bn is open to the east of the West Pole. Whether coming from the west or the south you need to make for a point about 100m to the south of West Pole (WP 50°45’.32, 00°56’.60W) and staying well clear of Bracklesham Bay. Make a heading of 013° towards the narrow entrance which will keep you clear of the shoals and into the deeper water off Eastoke Point.

What to see
Chichester Harbour and the surrounding area has plenty to offer visitors to the area. In between sailing trips, enjoy a spot of rambling. there are hundreds of walks all around the emsworth area, including a circular walk around thorney Island. Starting from the marina, it takes about two hours and offers splendid views across the harbour. Strike inland and you soon find yourself in the South Downs. Rolling hills and picturesque villages abound and it’s a great place for a spot of mountain biking or further strolling. You’re also close to Goodwood race course if horse racing floats your boat.

A couple of miles up, the channel forks and this is marked with a South Cardinal. You need to bear to starboard and follow the trots of moored boats up towards Emsworth. Again, the channel is clearly marked. Heading up this final leg to the marina, the channel shelves rapidly and there is a visitor’s pontoon slung between piles. This accommodates boats up to 2m in depth even on low tide. If you’ve timed the tide right, however (access to Emsworth Yacht Harbour is generally two to three hours either side of high water), you can proceed up the channel. The main channel is still clear until you reach an East Cardinal No Entry

and in close proximity a port marker, Fisherman’s, FL(3)R.10s. Here the channel splits three ways and you want to take the central channel. Continue to follow the moored boats up this channel until you get to the starboard marker, Echo FL(3)G.10s. From here you can clearly make out Emsworth Yacht Harbour and it’s a case of curving around to the right. There are a number of markers, but it does get tricky at night. There is a depth gauge just outside the marina which gives you the height over the sill and if you’ve got it wrong, there are piles just to starboard which you can dry out against. Call the marina on 01243 377727 to ensure there is space. There is no VHF. Once inside, turn to starboard, sashay to port past the fuel berth and you’re at the visitor’s pontoon.
Looking at the channel from shore. Note the east cardinal which marks the entrance to a narrow channel up to Emsworth quay.
Beyond that, East Head is a very popular anchorage, with a lovely beach. Heading east from Chichester does not open up such immediately inviting cruising grounds, yet there is scope for exploration and Brighton or Eastbourne aren’t far away. However, when it comes to sailing out of Emsworth, west is generally best; the tidal nature of Emsworth means you’re generally going to leave pretty close to high water and this means that by the time you get out of the harbour you’re
usually going to have five or so hours of west running tide, which is more than ample to get you either around the Isle of Wight or into the heart of the Solent. For those venturing further afield, a trip to Poole Harbour gives you an idea of what is essentially a long weekend’s cruise. Heading straight out across the English Channel opens up the traditional favourites of Cherbourg and the Channel Islands, both within easy reach from Emsworth. Fecamp is also a tempting option.

The ‘Active’ approach Partnering with marinas, rYa recognised training centres, berth holder groups and yacht cubs, the rYa active Marina Programme has been created to encourage and support increased berth holder activity to help people to get more from their boating. Piloted last year with just 12 marinas, the programme proved to be a real success and today, a total of 40 marinas have signed up to the scheme and are proudly flying their rYa active Marina flags.
Workshops
“the rYa active Marina programme has gone from strength to strength,
Is your marIna actIve?

receiving huge support from marina groups including MDL, Premier, Yacht Havens, Dean and reddyhoff, rYa training Centres and most importantly from the participants,” explains guy Malpas, rYa Yachting Development Officer who is responsible for running the programme. “if your marina is signed up to the programme, you and your crew will have the opportunity take part in practical workshops at your marina which are tailor made to build your knowledge and boost your confidence,” guy continues. “this could be a refresher on manoeuvring and berthing, crew training, or even a specialist workshop which will help you to tackle the tasks which challenge you the most.” Sovereign Harbour, a Premier Marina in eastbourne celebrated its launch of the active Marina Programme with a day of practical workshops covering basic manoeuvring and berthing skills as well as electronic navigation sessions for yacht sailors, motor cruisers and powerboats. Following the success of the launch, and the demand from berth holders for

further opportunities, the marina and local rYa recognised training centre ran a further two workshop days, including a Locking techniques Workshop focusing on locking in and out of the marina, especially on those busy days where queuing and rafting are sometimes required. Marina Manager Janet taylor said: “the launch was a great success and we are very pleased to work with the rYa by becoming an active Marina. it is a fantastic opportunity to be able to tailor activities to give our customers exactly what they need to become more confident and to enjoy using their boats.”
Fun events
alongside workshops, the active Marina Programme also allows you the opportunity to get to know and cruise with other berth holders and boat owners, and spend time with likeminded people at social events. Christine Klimczak, who recently took part in a Ladies Day at Queen anne’s Battery marina in Plymouth, explains: “i think that everyone should have as

many opportunities to practice and get as much training as possible because the more people you sail with, the more skills you pick up. “it’s also nice to meet the people you haven’t met before, especially the people you will hopefully bump into again at the marina.” Cruising in company is a relaxed and enjoyable way to extend your cruising horizons and ‘active’ marinas across the
country are scheduling cruises into their event calendars and inviting their berth holders to take part. “it’s great to see more organised cruises taking place from marinas. as well as benefitting from the experience and knowledge of others, it also gives people the opportunity to socialise with other boat owners and berth holders and have a great time,” concludes guy Malpas.

SAILING THEN AND NOW
David Henshall.
Celebrating the Royal Southern Yacht Club 175 years and counting! The club today occupies a privileged setting on the Hamble with a spectacular clubhouse.
COWES may like to think of itself of the ‘home’ of British yachting, but the real powerhouse of the sport lies just across the Solent on the River Hamble. The river is rightly famous for its busy marinas, boatyards and sailing clubs, but 2012 will see a new milestone reached, when the Royal Southern Yacht Club celebrates its 175th Anniversary. The history of the club creates an interesting parallel with the changing nature of sailing, as when the club was first founded in 1837, it was originally known as the Royal Southampton, with the first clubhouse being based within the city. In these formative days of the sport, yachts were few in number but large in size and were crewed by paid hands. Some of the larger yachts even carried their own cannon, which must have added a touch of spice to breaches of what is now ‘Part 2’ of the Racing Rules! Within a few years of being formed, the club was renamed and became the ‘Royal Southern’ (the name Royal Southampton was later taken by the club that still bears that name today at its Ocean Village headquarters). In the golden years of the late Victorian era, it occupied an imposing clubhouse just opposite the Royal Pier. Yachting was still very much
the sport of the wealthy and titled few, with the Royal Southern’s Commodore in the mid Victorian period being none other than Lord Cardigan of ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ fame. However, values were changing fast in late Victorian England with newer, more accessible yacht clubs attracting healthy memberships and the Royal Southern found that maintaining its high profile presence in central Southampton was becoming a heavy burden for its declining membership to bear. The club was already showing a flexibility to move with the times, as in 1905 the Royal Southern agreed to host one of the first powerboat races run in the UK.
WISE MOVE
In the early 1930s, when faced with the building of the Eastern Docks at Southampton, the club took its first steps towards moving to Hamble Quay. Although initially this was seen as nothing more than an adjunct to the main clubhouse, with the club’s finances in a parlous state, it eventually

King George V. Again the club showed its ability to move with the times, running the first Cowes-Torquay Powerboat Race in 1961, whilst reflecting its close involvement in the yachting scene by introducing the perennially popular Solent Points Series in 1968. By now the club was going from strength to strength and in 1980 had the honour of being a Challenger Club for the America’s Cup. Its yacht ‘Lionheart’ may have been eliminated by the French, but the Royal Southern itself continued to enjoy success.
50th running of the ever popular RORC/ JOG race from Cowes to Deauville. In addition there will be the Brewin Dolphin Open event for Metre Yachts; events for motorboats; family and fun days; and the inaugural Biscay Offshore race in association with Sunsail Racing. Clearly the Royal Southern Yacht Club is the place to be, not just in this year of celebrations, but as it forges ahead towards its next major milestone, of 200 years at the forefront of the UK sailing scene.
FORGING A FUTURE

made financial sense to sell the Southampton site. Being based at Hamble was indeed fortuitous for the Royal Southern, as in the early post war years it meant that they were perfectly placed to benefit from the rapid expansion in the sport that was taking place at that time. In 1952 the club was once again honoured with royal approval, as HRH Prince Philip took on the role of Admiral; in 2003 the Duke of Edinburgh agreed to extend his involvement with the Club to that of full Patron, a role last held in 1936 by HM
The Royal Southern has been at the forefront of the movement by sailing clubs to offer a full and attractive package of activities to members, both afloat and ashore, and in 1998 the superb new clubhouse was opened. The club has also been looking to its longer term future by developing its Youth Programme into a Youth Academy, which is already seeing younger Royal Southern members emulating and even surpassing the achievements of the older members. These initiatives, allied to the ability to constantly develop the value that the club offers to members and visitors, means that the Royal Southern is in robust health at 175 years old. The birthday celebrations planned for this season are a very good indicator of just how the club now enjoys considerable support across a diverse range of activities. The main event, a celebratory regatta, will run for 16 days in May and June, featuring racing for over 30 classes, before the Royal Southern hosts the

April showers fail to dampen jumblers’ spirits
THE weather tried its hardest to spoil outdoor shows in April but boat jumblers are a hardy crew and they still turned up in their droves at the Boat Jumble Association events. I took a trip to two of the old favourites. The first, Plymouth Boat Jumble, is held in City College grounds and is run by a group of volunteers ably led by Dean Reynolds from Stonehouse Bridge Boat Owners Association to raise funds for the upkeep of their moorings. It is traditionally held on Easter Sunday and it attracts locals and holiday makers, luckily the sun shone and much fun was had by all. There is quaint West Country charm about this show and the piles of old lobster pots and fishing nets for sale added to the ambience, making it look
like a set from an episode of Doc Martin the TV show. Martin Clunes was nowhere to be seen; he missed a great day out. This event is a long drive west and with diesel costs so high it doesn’t attract many commercial exhibitors but it always gets a big selection of private car boot sellers so there was a great mix of new and old chandlery on offer. Exhibitors I spoke with reported good sales of fenders, rope and fishing tackle and I saw several small dinghies and tenders change hands at bargain prices.
SOUND ADVICE
Paul and Mary Bjork of Yacht Parts Bristol were one of the bigger stands exhibiting with a very attractive display of larger chandlery items such as cookers, hatches, winches, windlasses and self-
steering gear. I witnessed some detailed discussions with a customer over a beautiful pair of dinghy davits they had on display. Good product knowledge from exhibitors like this can prevent you from buying the wrong item and save you a fortune. Vic Chappell of Taunton in Somerset, another boat jumble regular with over 20 year’s outboard motor servicing and sales experience, was also exhibiting. I caught up with him towards the end of the sale and he was still dispensing advice on fuel injection systems to some avid motor boaters. He reported good sales of small outboards up to 15HP and was very pleased with some engine purchases he had made from the car booters. As he put it in his West Country way, “a few 2 stroke ‘fixer uppers’ and a few ‘basket cases’ for stripping down for spare parts” - the Green Blue initiative would be proud of his recycling efforts!
IN THE KNOW
5
Another West Country specialist in attendance was Compass Marine of Dartmouth, the country’s foremost independent importer of fenders and what Tim Mear the owner doesn’t know about the various shapes and sizes and applications of inflated fenders, coir fenders or high density foam fenders is not worth knowing. He was in full flow when I passed by talking about the pros and cons of fender socks. Watching the dispensing of all this
free advice got me thinking, boat jumble exhibitors normally come from a sailing or boating background or are well versed in the products they sell and can impart much advise and wisdom to novice sailors. So, even if you don’t buy anything at an event you can ask questions of the stallholders and benefit from their experience at no cost. Now that is a bargain worth attending for!
INTERESTING MIX
Next up was Norfolk Boat Jumble, held at the Royal Norfolk Showground on 15 April, which was altogether a more regal affair at the purpose-built showground venue. This show attracts a nice mix of East Coast businesses and private sellers, together with the regular boat jumble circuit exhibitors, and makes for a great family day out. The intermittent showers of icy hail did little to dampen the spirits of the attendees who eagerly bought up all manner of nautical bargains, including shop-soiled cookers and fridges from big names like Aquafax; antifoul and top sides paint from Dauntless Boatyard chandlery; canoes from Nucleus Water sports of Holland-on-Sea and Norfolk Canoes; and rope and buoyancy aids from Rota Marine of London. Ian Thomson, a regular boat jumble exhibitor based on the East Coast had a fabulous display of new and used boat fittings, dagger boards and rudders mainly from salvaged vessels which
4 he had lovingly dismantled. This was a great opportunity for dinghy sailors who were restoring their dinghies prior to the new racing or cruising season. Ian also had a huge selection of used sails for all types of dinghies with more back at his warehouse apparently. I also saw some great boats on display. Highlights included a brand new 6 metre Seapro RIB, and a beautiful little pre-loved 11ft 6 ins Heyland Lugger sailing dinghy at £975 from a private seller - ideal for lazy summer days on the Norfolk Broads.

IN THE DRINK
One of the pleasures of boating is a quiet little – responsible – drink.
BY PAUL ANTROBUS
Rosé wines ONLY ten or so years ago, rosé wine was much maligned by so-called British wine buffs, yet much loved by me and my continental friends. Since then, the brands on offer here have increased and improved markedly, fuelling a big shift in attitudes - so much so that rosé is now included in the Consumer Price Index ‘shopping basket’. More or less every wine-making country has stepped on to the rosé band wagon, to the extent, unfortunately, that less reputable producers are exploiting the booming demand and putting some mediocre wines back on our shelves. Buyer beware!

When abroad, always try a local brand to learn more. French vineyards make rosés to meet domestic holiday demand but in relatively small quantities. On one trip to St Tropez, we stocked up at the Campaux winery, a few miles inland. The rosé there was a stunner; pale pinky grey, delicate flavour and, at that time, only €6 a bottle - but no spare bottles for ‘export’. The lesson here is to enjoy the local production when you find it! What to look for in the UK? The best starting indicator is colour and price. The paler the better, but the paler the wine the higher the price tends to be - from £6 to £12 a bottle at least to get the flavour quality. The other useful indicator is the grape variety. The best rosés are pressed from a mix of white and red grapes. Some are just blended red wine with white. It’s not necessarily inferior and rosé sparkling wines are usually made this way. The most common method is to make a white wine, then to let it stand on red grape skins for a period. The colour and flavour spectrum is thereby infinitely adjustable by the wine maker. Another good way to choose is to follow the grape varieties the wine is made from. If you have a
favourite white wine, a rosé from the same grapes may well suit you.
RECOMMENDED ROSÉS
These are examples I have found in my local supermarkets which all worked well with my tasting panels. Serve well chilled. From Côtes de Provence, France, Petit Rimauresq 13 percent a.b.v, uses Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan grapes. A bright translucent light colour, it drinks beautifully but costs £11. The Italia brand range, a reliable moderately priced brand quite widely available, offers a straightforward Italian Pinot Grigio Rosé at 12.5 per

cent which I found at a bargain £5.25. On the darker side, but still drinks very well. If you like Spanish Rioja, you will enjoy Muga rosé at 13.5 percent a.b.v from the Rioja Alta region and made from the classic Rioja Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura grapes. Crisp and great with summer foods and savoury canapés. Around £7.50 a bottle. A moderately priced French rosé which has been around for a few years is the cutely named Chaten-Oeuf, loosely translated as ‘the cat that got the cream’. From the Pays d’Oc region and 12 percent, this brand cheerfully admits to being from a variety of unspecified grapes but is fine to drink on its own. £6 at Waitrose.
