SIGHT OF THINGS TO COME The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) steaming towards Portsmouth on March 22. Image: U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Chris Brown
ThE arrival of the 100,000 tonne US aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Solent marked the warship’s first port of call in its round-the-world deployment. The ship is accompanied by her escort – the destroyer Winston S Churchill. The Royal Navy’s First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, said: “We
warmly welcome the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group - a reflection of the close partnership between our nations and navies, and the value of credible seapower in support of our shared national interests. Too large to dock at Portsmouth’s Royal Navy base the aircraft carrier

countries work together to make Europe and the world a safer place.” Among the 5,226 crew on board the carrier are six Royal Navy aircraft handlers who are honing their skills ahead of serving on board Britain’s new aircraft carrier, hMS Queen Elizabeth. The visit forms part of an ongoing partnership between the US and UK on carrier operations in the run-up to the Royal Navy’s two new 65,000-tonne ships – hMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales – entering service in 2017, with initial operational capability from 2020. Although smaller than the Roosevelt the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers will be the biggest and most powerful warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy and hMS Queen Elizabeth is the first of class. Capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft, the ship will be based at Portsmouth. have you taken photos of the USS Theodore Roosevelt during its visit? Send them to us: editor@allatsea.co.uk.
Heading into troubled waters FROM PAGE ONE. Vanuatu President Baldwin Lonsdale said the storm had destroyed most buildings in the capital Port Vila, including schools and clinics. Initial reports indicated Cyclone Pam was on a collision course with the Volvo Ocean Race fleet shortly after they were due to leave Auckland. At this point the race was delayed for a day but, despite a change of course by the deadly weather system, the race did not start until 18 March. The main issue had become the sea state the fleet was likely to meet in the South Pacific and then Southern Ocean. Team Brunel’s Australian navigator, Andrew Cape, said:“The situation is different to what we’ve ever had before in the 41-year history of this race.” The crews, led out of the ‘City of Sails’ by Dongfeng Race Team (Charles Caudrelier/FRA), knew they may have avoided the cyclone but still face the toughest of all nine legs as they race through the Southern Ocean. The route takes the boats close to Point Nemo, the remotest place from land, where the nearest humanity can be found in the space stations patrolling the earth. The same leg caused havoc to the fleet in the last edition in 2011-12 with only winners Puma escaping serious damage and eventual event victors Groupama limping home with a jury rig. MAPFRE were the winners of this Race’s Leg 4 in what turned out to be one of the closest finishes in Volvo Ocean Race history. Just eight minutes separated the top three after 20 days at sea. The 5,264 nm from Sanya, China to Auckland took

anchored off Stokes Bay. During the visit the US and British navies met when a Theodore Roosevelt team faced hMS Diamond on the football field at hMS Temeraire. With more than 5,000 sailors on board the carrier local businesses were expecting a considerable boost to the
local economy when the sailors took shore leave. One crew member on board Winston S Churchill who particularly looked forward to the visit Royal Navy Lieutenant Lynsey Sewell – the ship’s navigating officer. The position is always filled by a UK navigator to honour the ship’s British connection. Churchill, the only active-duty ship named after a foreign national, is the fifth US warship named in honor of a UK citizen. Churchill is also the only US Navy ship to have a Royal Navy officer assigned as ship’s company. Capt Daniel Grieco, commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt, said: “We are very excited to be in the UK. This port visit is a great opportunity for the sailors of Theodore Roosevelt to meet the people of Portsmouth and experience the history and rich culture of the United Kingdom. Port visits like this give us a chance to work with our allies, improve interoperability and strengthen friendships as our

The UK has a bad reputation when it comes to weather but in reality we do not get extremes in any type of weather. Just look at the freezing temperatures experienced in the US over the winter for example. here, the hot weather makes headline news when thermometers hit a mere 30C. hot yes, but not when compared to many countries where that would be considered a pleasant relief. The Volvo ocean race teams expect to encounter all manner of weather conditions, but even they probably did not think one of the biggest cyclones in history would put a stop to their plans. The resulting three days delay to leg 5 can be considered a lucky escape compared to what could have happened had the teams already been at sea. The Volvo ocean race, like so many others, does not wait for the spring. however, with the new season starting, it has been a busy month with many marine events taking place and news of those coming up landing in the All At Sea inbox. The excitement of spring is definitely in the air bringing with it more boaters back on to the water and welcoming many others for the first time. If your boat has been out of action over the winter there are various pre-season checks to carry out. For those of you who own an outboard those nice chaps at barrus have put together a
checklist to ensure your engine is in tiptop condition. Whether you have already been out and about or are planning your first big adventure of the year have a wonderful trip and remember to take your camera (or Smartphone) and send us your favourite photos. While you are out, on water or land, it is worth remembering – and reminding others – about littering. There have been several stories this month about the increase and impact of marine littering, and littering in general in fact. We are lucky enough to have a stunning coastline and beaches, so it is such a shame that people still think it is okay to dump their rubbish. Initiatives like the rYA’s Green blue are working with young people to bring a greater understanding of this, and other environmental issue, to the boaters of the future. let’s hope the youngsters of today will show some ‘older’ people how to care for our waters and coastline. Talking of caring leads me nicely on to the interesting feature we have this month about the rNlI. These are dedicated people who give their time and commitment to protecting and saving lives every day of the year. They do an incredible job and do not always get the recognition they deserve. If you have an experience with the rNlI that you would like to share with All at Sea’s readers we would love to read it. editor@allatsea.co.uk
Over the past ten years that J.P. Morgan Asset Management has sponsored the round the Island race, more than £600,000 has been raised for charity. The good news is that there’s plenty more to come as J.P. Morgan looks forward to a further two years as the race title sponsor. The ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has been appointed the official race Charity through to 2016 and, so far, the Trust has raised more than £189,000 through the race, which has been invaluable in helping it to achieve its three-year plan to double the number of young people in recovery from cancer that it works with by the end of 2016. This year the Trust is awarding a flag to display on race day to teams and individuals who have raised more than £50 for the Trust. Look out for the five Trust boats on 27 June and give them a wave.
The Trust’s young people will be looking out for the flags so why not get involved and have some fun on race day? There is more information about getting involved at: http://rtir.me/charity Keech Hospice in Bedfordshire provided Mark richardson and his four daughters with a safe and calm environment during the last hours of his wife Jackie’s life in 2014. The expertise and skills of the Hospice nursing team made a devastating situation more bearable and the richardson family was unanimous in the decision to do everything in their power to raise a sum of £30,000, which will keep one bed funded for a month. Family friend and Saracens rugby player Hugh vyvyan challenged Mark to a 10k run, which Mark contra’d with a bid to participate in the 2015 J.P. Morgan Asset Management round the Island race. Whilst Mark is new to this type of sailing
he has previously served in the Navy for eleven years. The plan has since evolved and at this year’s rTIr, there will be a ‘race within a race’ with no less than eight boats, chartered through Sailing Logic, competing under the Keech Hospice livery, well supported by a host of rugby players from various teams and with The Keech Trophy designed by military artist Ivan Berryman up for grabs. In this World Cup year, the names of the remaining rugby players who are making a play for the Keech Trophy will remain a secret until May. As well as the entire richardson family having a role in the race both on board and on shore, several of the nurses from Keech Hospice will be participating. remember that the next cut-off point for Standard entry is midnight on 13 June. http://www.rtir.me/entries www.justgiving.com/teams/GoteamKeech www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org

Once the dredging is complete the marina, home to international sailing events including Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, will have safeguarded its ability to accommodate large boats for the next three years. It will have a depth of up to 7.5m during high tides and a minimum of 3.5m in low spring tides. www.cowesyachthaven.com.
DID YOU KNOW?
The proposal for a breakwater to protect Cowes Harbour from northerly and north-easterly winds was, in fact, first tabled in 1860 by Admiral de Horsey, a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron and one of the best-known residents of Cowes at this time.
TOM Parker and Nick McCulloch will be taking part in this year’s Talisker Atlantic Challenge and will be sharing it with the world. The race will see the pair row the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. A world first in ocean rowing, the team has partnered up with Marine Camera Solutions to broadcast live online 24/7 for the entire three months, allowing viewers to track every one of their 1,000,000 strokes during the 3,000 mile journey. The transatlantic adventurers are hoping to raise £1million for three charities: Barnado’s, Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal and also Sussex Beacon. The team is also looking for heroes to help get them to the start line. For just a £20 donation supporters can submit selfies that will appear on the boat and travel across the ocean with them as an Atlantic Tempest Hero. To donate visit www.igg.me/at/athero.
NATASHA’S BIG RYA CHEQUE INSPIRATIONAL disabled sailor Natasha ‘Miss Isle’ Lambert has presented a cheque for £5,469.20 to the RYA Foundation, following her epic ‘Sea and Summit Challenge’. RYA Sailability Manager Debbie Blachford commented: “Natasha is a real inspiration and what she has achieved is something that will inspire many other young people to get out on the water or even take on an epic challenge of their own as she did last year.” Seventeen-year-old Natasha, who has quadriplegic athertoid cerebral palsy which affects her speech and control of her movements, sailed 440 miles around England’s south west coast to Wales before swapping her boat for her special Hart Walker walking aid to scale the 2,970ft of Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in Southern Britain.
UNVEILED AT EASTER
PREMIER Marinas will officially unveil its £5.8m new boatyard development at Swanwick Marina at a grand opening ceremony on Easter Monday. The official ceremony will be complemented by a host of activities throughout the afternoon. Visitors will be able to walk around the modernised boatyard and view the new facilities and equipment including a hoist bay, specialist forklift and new fuel pontoon. On-site boat brokers Sea Ventures, Ancasta, Princess, Sunseeker, MiCats and Clipper will have a range of boats to view, plus electronics business, Landau will be offering demonstrations and expert advice. This event will coincide with Swanwick Marina’s annual Easter Boat Show held over the Easter weekend, from 3 - 6 April.
During her month long challenge, Natasha single-handedly sailed her 21ft Mini Transat, ‘Miss Isle Too’ using a ‘sip and puff’ system operated by a straw inside a mountain bike helmet, a mechanism developed by her dad, Gary Natasha’s mum Amanda says: “Natasha would like the funds to be used to help others with disabilities to get on the water. It would mean a lot to her to see others enjoying sailing thanks to this money.” The money presented to the RYA Foundation represents a third of the total raised by Natasha with the remaining two-thirds going to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and the RNLI. To date Natasha has raised over £38,000 for charity. As for what is next for Natasha, we will all have to wait and see! http://missisle.com

The waters off Muscat, Oman provided challenging sailing conditions for the extreme 40 fleet in Act 2 of the extreme Sailing Series™. Choppy seas and strong winds confounded even the most experienced crews, resulting in an unpredictable leader board at the end of each day’s racing, with The Wave, Muscat skippered by Leigh McMillian (GBR), ultimately seizing the title as champions of Act 2. Leigh said, “We had a really tough day
and SAP were sailing much better than us. They had the measure of us on the start lines and really put the pressure on. It came down to the last race and having been on the back foot all day and not making the most of the situation, we just had to beat them. Thankfully we managed to sneak away from them at the start. It was touch and go and they were making it difficult for us but we managed to pull it off.”
GAC Pindar’s co-skippers Seve Jarvin (AUS) and Ian Williams’ (GBR) partnership got off to an encouraging start with eight podium finishes and they finished in sixth place leaving them in sixth place in the overall standings with Red Bull Sailing Team and The Wave in first and second respectively. The fleet now heads to Qingdao, China for Act 3 from 30 April – 3 May where it will be racing at the same site as the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

MAN DIES IN HARBOUR
A 62-year-old man has died after collapsing in a tender in langstone Harbour. A small group of friends had been checking the moorings on the boat, which was on exposed mud at the time, when the man fell unconscious. RNlI lifeboats navigated the mud to reach the dinghy and a coastguard helicopter winched the man from the boat. He was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital but sadly passed away.
CLEANER OCEANS
About eight million tonnes of plastic waste are being dumped in oceans each year. europêche, the body representing 80,000 european fishermen, has teamed up with Waste Free Oceans to help combat the growing issue of marine litter. europêche will work with its member organisations to raise awareness of the issue and encourage fishermen across europe to get involved in clean up initiatives.

aside for upkeep, so they were looking for a boat requiring less maintenance and providing more versatility across all levels of sailing. THe round Hayling Island race will take place on Good Friday. In addition to windsurfers this year’s event will also include open Canoes and Stand Up Paddle Boards with their own course just off the beach. The round Hayling Island race was first staged in 1980 and the 14 miles circumnavigation can take anything from 60 minutes to 6 hours. Guy Cribb holds the official course record of 58 minutes, achieved in 1992 when there was a northerly breeze, gusting 20-30 knots. Asked whether the record could be broken Guy said: “Yes, I would have broken it in 2010 if it weren’t for the 40 knot squall. It had taken around 30 minutes to go from HISC anticlockwise all the way to the West Point/ lifeboat place- I got there quicker than the staff driving there to monitor the sailors coming past! “From there it should have been a quick blast back to the club and finish - probably about fifteen minutes. But the squall flattened me on a sail for half that wind speed. I was unable to recover for about ten minutes, then there was a massive
wind shift and eventually the wind died, with exhaustion I wobbled in to HISC.” rob Kent, from Calshot Activity Centre, has won the windsurfing event for the last four years and has entered this year to see if he can make it a fifth. His wife Annette, who was the first lady last year and his two teenage daughters (who have both previously won the London Windsurfing Association’s Young Windsurfer of the Year Award) will also be taking part. rob describes what is special about the race: “Apart from the beautiful surroundings and the buzz of 500 entries, it is a great challenge with bridges, sandbars, ferries, tides and tactics and on a windy day, big waves on the sea front. “Having said that it is a challenge that, given with the excellent race organisation and safety cover, is within the grasp of many windsurfers and always delivers a great sense of personal achievement. I have never seen anyone finish the event without a smile on their faces.” Sailracer will be tracking all entrants, so their progress can be seen live online by all their supporters. hayling.sailracer.org

The OpTimisT Dinghy 1947 – 2007 This paperback tells the story of how an ‘orange crate’ from Florida became the junior boat in over 120 countries and the first boat of over 80 per cent of Olympic boat skippers. it recounts the origins of the Optimist dinghy. in 1947 Major Cliff McKay, from Florida, linked his eleven-year old son’s love of sailing with the popular soapbox
car racing of the time. he envisaged a soapbox sailboat, contacted local boatbuilder Clark Mills. Clark’s basic design proved so brilliant it is still recognisable in its descendent today. This part of the history is written by the Major’s son Clifford McKay Jr. who was, literally, the first boy to sail the Optimist he sailed Clark Mills’ prototype.
This book relates John Periam’s experiences in the late 1970s to early 1980s when he was in southwold in suffolk and then shoreham-by-sea where he became a member of shoreham RNLi Lifeboat Crew. John had a Labrador called shelley and a close bond developed between them that saw John through personal traumas. One of the themes to the book is life around a working lifeboat station; the social side of the crew, fund raising, the characters, rescues and fun enjoyed by a close nit community steeped in lifeboat traditions. There is even a rescue involving one of the elite Red Arrows pilots. Peter huxtable MBE, who was Coxswain of the lifeboat and served as a crew member for 43 years, has written the Preface to the book. Available on Amazon Kindle.

RYA FOCUS
The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.
BY EMMA SLATER
Push the Boat Out This year the RYA are planning the biggest and best Push the Boat Out yet in order to welcome many new people to the wonderful sport of sailing.
IN 2014 RYA Push the Boat Out weekend saw a whopping 24,000 people nationwide discover sailing on their doorsteps. Due to its success, this year’s Push The Boat Out will take place over nine days from Saturday 9 - Sunday 17 May. With two weekends and five weekdays, clubs and centres will be running even more free and low cost activities to appeal to a wider range of people, showcasing what sailing offers, from the freedom of being on the water, to the social buzz, the thrill of racing and the fact there really is something for everyone. RYA Club Support Advisor Jackie Bennetts explains: “Push the Boat Out 2014 was a huge success, probably our biggest and best yet, and it was fantastic to see so many clubs and centres taking part with record-breaking numbers out on the water. But we are already looking forward to seeing the different options and opportunities that will be on offer for all ages and abilities this year simply by extending the event.”
Maybe you are a casual cruising sailor who enjoys pottering around with your mates but hasn’t quite got round to joining a club? Or perhaps you have got a family that love the water but you have actually never got round to having a go yourself? You will be able to find your nearest Push the Boat Out event, get out on the water with an experienced sailor and discover the fun of messing about on the water.
ON THE DAY
During your PTBO taster session you will sail a boat with an experienced sailor or instructor nearby. You get in the boat and they show you the ropes and tell you what you need to get going. They make everything easy to understand and get you ready to have a go. All the equipment you need will be provided including a buoyancy aid or life jacket. It is best to turn up with some warm clothes, a pair of old shoes and a waterproof coat as it is nearly always
All the family can get involved in the event This year’s Push The Boat Out will take place over nine days in May

“Push the Boat Out can tick two very big boxes for sailing clubs and the sport as a whole...” cooler out on the water than on the shore. If the wind is light or you are in a more stable steady boat then you will only get a few splashes. However if you are a windsurfer or in a boat that is closer to the water, you will probably get quite wet. A wetsuit will keep you warm though. “Many people don’t know about the opportunities available to go sailing or windsurfing so close to home and they perhaps think that sailing is too expensive or they need their own equipment. Push the Boat Out aims to prove this is not the case,” Jackie continues.
WHAT IS IN IT FOR CLUBS?
Each year the number of clubs taking part in Push the Boat Out continues to grow. Clubs throughout the UK gained over 1,000 personal memberships through last year’s event while more than 500 families became members of the venues they visited. Earlswood Lakes Sailing Club near Birmingham is a small inland club, with a membership of around 150. But they set their ambitions high last year and embraced the opportunity to showcase the club with the aim to get the local community sailing. Their well-thought out approach certainly worked and more than 240 first-timers enjoyed a taster sail with 300 visitors in total. They said: “Push the Boat Out can tick two very big boxes for sailing clubs and the sport as a whole. Firstly it can raise awareness in the local community and of the fact that there are opportunities to discover sailing on most people’s doorsteps, which is really important in raising the profile of the sport. Secondly it is an opportunity to convert visitors into
course bookings or membership there and then.” Meanwhile Varne Boat Club in Greatstone, Kent used Push the Boat Out as part of their resurgence after the launch of a new windsurfing and watersports section, welcoming more than 100 people on each day and delivering 82 free tasters.
ROAD TO SUCCESS
Jackie concludes: “We are delighted to see so many clubs and centres signing up and supporting PTBO. The most successful clubs were those who showed visitors the clear pathways open to them at the club, to keep them coming back and sailing with them regularly. “It is one thing a family enjoying a joyride, it is another thing converting them into committed sailors, and that is the real focus for Push The Boat Out 2015 - to get even more participants into this fantastic sport.”
How do I Push the Boat Out? RYA Push the Boat Out 2015 takes place from 9 - 17 May. Getting involved is easy! There are hundreds of clubs and centres opening their doors during Push the Boat Out to offer you and your family the chance to get out on the water. PRE-SEASON NAVIGATIONAL EQUIPMENT CHECKS
ON COURSE FOR SUCCESS
Alan Watson, a recognised navigational expert, who has clients ranging from the weekend cruiser to the professional sailor, shares his top tips for making sure your on board equipment is ready for a Allseason at Seaout ad on 1-2the page ad:All full water.
The start of a new season is the perfect time to re-familiarize yourself with your on board navigational equipment and make sure you have the settings in place that will keep you safe for the months ahead. Multifunction displays have transformed navigation for sailors and these intelligent and intuitive screens have opened up more possibilities in the world of boating. They give sailors a range of information at their fingertips, saving time and effort onboard and are becoming an invaluable addition to any boat. even the most dedicated paper and chart user is now seeing the added value they can bring to the vessel. The simplicity with which MFDs can now be used means that they can help to save time, effort and improve safety onboard. Using your MFD to its full potential will improve and enhance your time on the water.
getting a credible depth reading on the echosounder or fishfinder, then check to see that shallow water alarms are set as you want them. After knowing where I am and that I am in safe water my next priority is see and be seen, so check that you are seeing AIS targets on the chart plotter and, if you have Class B transmitting AIS, check that it is working. If you have an autopilot fitted, the chartplotter will use the heading sensor in this to give heading. Switch on the heading vector (red) on the chartplotter and make sure it points the right way. If it is out the chances are someone has left their toolbox right beside the sensor. The heading ideally needs to be set up away from the dockside and older autopilots benefit from regular calibration to redo the deviation curve; recent ones do this automatically in the background.
MFD CHECKS The weekends before the first outing on RADAR CHECKS the water offer an ideal time to have a play The next thing you need to check is your with your MFD and make sure that the key radar. This is best done away from the settings are in place. The first thing I check dockside. Check you are showing targets is that my chart cartridge is up-to-date on the screen and then with the radar in then power up the system and check that head Up (just for this test, I use Course Up I am getting a good GPS fix. That is the normally) point your boat at a small target critical “where I?” dealt with; make sure it shows atfirst Sea 1/2item page ad am 268x164 5/3/15and14:19 Page 1 on the heading the second is depth, so check that you are line. Once this is done go to the chart
display and put radar overlay on. Make sure that the land echoes are accurately overlaid the land on the chart; if they don’t then it means the heading information from the autopilot is out and needs calibrating. And finally don’t forget the VhF. A common fault is water in the aerial cable which does not affect reception but reduces transmission range to just about zero. A test call with a distant station (not the marina 100 yards away) will prove the system. COOKING AFLOAT REAL FOOD FOR HUNGRY SAILORS
Mussels with cider
This is my take on a classic moules marinière – and more refreshing than the original. The sweetness of the cider works with the briny juiciness of the mussels. Get the fishmonger to remove the beards for you, and cook them soon after you get on board.
Heat the oil in a large, deep pan. Add the shallot, garlic, bay leaf, lemon zest and seasoning, and cook for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add the brandy, if you’re using it, and cook until the liquid has evaporated. Pour in the cider and let it boil for a minute or two to let the alcohol burn off. Add the mussels and give it all a good stir. Cover with a lid to let the mussels steam and cook for 3–4 minutes until the shells have opened, giving the pan a good shake every now and again. Discard any that do not open. Add the lemon juice, parsley and a grind of pepper, stir well and serve in deep bowls with crusty bread.
FOR TWO ■ 1 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil ■ 1 shallot, peeled and sliced ■ 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed ■ 1 bay leaf ■ grated zest and juice of 1 lemon ■ 1 tbsp brandy (optional) ■ 200ml dry cider ■ 1 kg mussels, washed, beards removed (discard any that are open) ■ handful of flat-leaf parsley, chopped ■ salt and pepper

POWERBOATING WORKSHOP FOR YOUNGSTERS
OSPREY RIBS TO PARTNER WITH EVINRUDE
Ten young people from schools in Oxfordshire have been selected to attend Williams Performance Tenders‘ five-week Powerboat Workshop course. The practical sessions, which kick off in mid-April, are designed to give young people the chance to learn life-long skills that can be used in future employment and to teach them more about the sector. As in previous years, one of the participants from the course will be given the opportunity to work as an apprentice at Williams. The sessions will conclude with a race day at Williams’ test lake on 16 May. Last year, eight young people enjoyed racing model speed boats of their own design and were also given the opportunity to go for a spin as a passenger in one of Williams’ sporty jet tenders. Mathew Hornsby, Sales Director at Williams Performance Tenders, says: “It’s great to hear their ideas and to see their ambitions grow as they see how qualifications in school and university can lead to exciting jobs that will challenge them in the marine industry. We always particularly enjoy the race day at the end of the course – all the young people get very competitive and it gives them a chance to see everything we’ve taught them about designing and building boats in action. Investing in the boat builders and designers of the future is very exciting and is an aspect of our business that we look forward to expanding.” www.williamsjettenders.com
SUZUKI SHOWS OFF NEW MODELS Suzuki Marine dealers have taken delivery of a brand new stock of DF2.5Ls, which is the long shaft edition. The new DF2.5L has a shaft length of 508mm (127mm longer than the standard shaft) and is aimed at the sailing market for use as an auxiliary engine on small sailing boats and dinghies. This new model weighs just 14kg, which means it is very easy to lift and transport with its large carrying handle. It also benefits from a range of features such as F-N gear shift, water-cooling and a 1 litre fuel tank. www.suzuki-marine.co.uk
Osprey RIBs Ltd is partnering with BRP’s Evinrude E-TEC to fit the new G2 outboard engine on its product line-up. Osprey’s RIBs range from 5.15m to 8.6m and are hand-built to meet the customer’s requirements with options for leisure, diving, commercial or racing.
Stingray have been building handcrafted boats for over 35 years. The range starts from 18ft up to 25ft and includes bow riders, sports cuddies and cruiser models.
Mike Loach, BRP commercial representative UK and Ireland, says, “We’re delighted to be partnering with Osprey RIBs, which was a major name in RIB racing in the 90s and has a long pedigree for producing high quality products.”

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
PRE-SEASON OUTBOARD CHECKS
Planning FOr Fun
Part of your pre-season planning should include a check of your outboard motor. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until the last minute only to discover there are a few items that need serious attention. Checking your outboard motor now should only take a few minutes, allowing more precious hours of fun on the water this summer. In order to ensure a safe and uneventful season Barrus recommend you follow the checklist below:
n Ensure that any remote fuel tanks are correctly secured to prevent movement or spillage.
1) EnginE Oil n See the – ‘Checking and Adding Engine Oil’ – section in your Owner’s Handbook. Refer to your engine model specifications for the correct grade and amount of engine oil. Care should be taken to avoid overfilling with oil.
3) OutbOard mOunting brackEtS n Inspect the outboard for tightness to the boat transom. If any looseness of the outboard or mounting fasteners exists, retighten the outboard mounting fasteners. When checking for signs of looseness, look for loss of outboard transom bracket material or paint caused by movement between the outboard mounting fasteners and the outboard transom brackets. Also, look for signs of movement between the outboard transom brackets and the boat transom.
2) FuEl SyStEm n Visually inspect the fuel system for deterioration or leaks. Over extended periods of time fuel will degrade and could have adverse effects on your outboard fuel system. This would be more evident if the winterisation procedures were not followed correctly. Inspect the fuel line and primer bulb for cracks, swelling, leaks, hardness or other signs of deterioration or damage. If any of these conditions are found, the fuel line or primer bulb must be replaced immediately.
4) StEEring SyStEm n Check the steering system for binding or loose components. In both the Tiller Handle and Remote Steering cable models, the steering should be free of obstruction and binding, operating in both directions freely.
n Visually check steering link rod fasteners for proper tightness as per the owner’s handbook. 5) battEry – iF FittEd n Remove the battery from the boat and check the water level. Recharge if necessary. Check that all electrical connections are tight and free of corrosion. Do not use deep cycle batteries. Engines must use a marine starting battery as per the manufacturer’s specifications. n When connecting engine battery, hex nuts must be used and torqued to secure battery leads to battery posts. 6) PrOPEllEr n Check propeller blades for damage. The leading edge of the propeller should be smooth and free from nicks and cracks. n Check the propeller hub kit is still functioning correctly. Before leaving the dock, check the outboard’s forward – neutral – reverse shift to ensure correct shifting, and that the propeller hub is still intact. 7) lanyard StOP Switch Or kill Switch n Check that activating the lanyard stop switch stops the engine. Start the outboard on a flushing device or in the water. Check the complete operation of the kill switch, start the outboard – pull the lanyard switch – re-
install the lanyard and re-start the outboard. The Lanyard stop switch must be checked and tested before each use of the outboard. 8) accESSOriES n Always carry spare fuses. Open the fuse holder and check that the spare fuses are in the holder. n Lifesaving equipment should be checked. Life vests should be checked for cuts and abrasions, self-inflating vests for expired canisters, and have them checked or replace them if you are not sure. 9) gEnEral carE n Flush out the outboard cooling system if operating in salt or polluted water. This will
help prevent a build-up of deposits from clogging the internal water passages. See ‘Flushing the Cooling System’ section in your owner’s handbook. n Wash off all salt deposits and flush out the exhaust outlet of the propeller and gear case with fresh water if operating in saltwater. n Your outboard is protected with a durable baked enamel finish. Clean and wax often using marine cleaners and waxes. rESOlVing a PrOblEm If you ever have a problem, question or concern about your power package, contact your dealer or any authorised Mercury or Mariner dealership. FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO
In the first of our new British Sailing Team columns, RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park sets the scene for the season ahead in the team’s preparations towards Rio 2016. SPRING has sprung, and with it arrives the start of the European sailing season, which will be a critical one in our journey to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We’ve just passed the ‘500 days to go’ milestone, which certainly sharpens the senses a little. I’m really excited looking ahead to what this year has in store for the British Sailing Team. We see a revamped ISAF Sailing World Cup series with a World Cup regatta back on home shores in Weymouth and Portland (8 - 14 June), and the race towards Rio qualification steps up a gear for our sailors as they bid to be the ones selected to represent Great Britain.
Thompson and Elliot Willis have all been performing at the highest level for a number of years but haven’t yet had the opportunity to compete at an Olympic Games with just that one spot per class available for each nation.
JUST ONE SPOT
Having already secured British berths in all ten Olympic Classes and all three Paralympic events for 2016 at the first opportunities last year, the race is now on for the sailors to show the RYA selectors what they can do and make sure it is their name on the entry lists for the one British spot in each class in fifteen months’ time. Selection for Team GB and ParalympicsGB will be as tough as it has ever been. But within our current British Sailing Team squad we have a potent mix of youth and experience who are well up to the task, and some of those sailors have been waiting in the wings for some time. People like Giles Scott, Nick

results against a world-class fleet in the Olympic environment. The confidence sailors take away from knowing they can deliver results in Rio can be crucial. We’ve had a fantastic start to this preOlympic year, but there can be no let up as the race to Rio intensifies!
2015 sees a busy year for us with key international regattas, Class World and European Championships spanning the full breadth of the calendar and in almost every continent – a logistical feat which will be sure to keep our operations team and our shipping friends at Peters & May on their toes. I’m as excited as ever by the talent we have and the medal potential within the team. The sailors have been showing great form already this year with eight medals won amid some tough competition and variable conditions at the first ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta of 2015 in Miami. Among the gold medallists were Giles Scott and Bryony Shaw, who silenced their opposition by winning their Finn and RS:X Women’s classes with a day to spare. Luke Patience and Elliot Willis earned a confidence-boosting first World Cup gold in the 470 Men’s event and in doing so beat one of their perennial rivals to the top step for the first time. We’re looking forward to going into battle at our home World Cup regatta – the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth & Portland – which is one of just five legs of the elite new world tour, where you’ll hopefully take the chance to come and see our home-grown talents taking on the rest of the world.

BOATING PEOPLE CAPTAIN PAUL GRANT, HOVERCRAFT PILOT TELL US WHAT YOUR ROLE AS A HOVERCRAFT PILOT INVOLVES?
I joined Hovertravel in December 1990, but I had a fourteen-month gap year in 2002.
It is all about focus, concentration and anticipation. Aptitude pays a role too. It is said that if you can tap your head and rub your tummy at the same time with either hand you are half way there. There is a vast amount of work behind the scenes. To begin with we all work a rostered shift pattern. All local charts, crew training manuals, crew drills, medical kits, surveys relating both to structural and safety and watertight integrity have to be kept upto-date everyday. The local notices and navigation warnings for the operational area are also updated on a daily basis. There is a virtual MOT for everything that you may imagine, then all the things you didn’t think of as well. Captains within the company are and have always been committed to the encouragement, enlightenment and development of both new and existing crew members.
DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO WORK IN A JOB INVOLVING THE SEA?
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECTS OF THE JOB?
Captain Paul Grant shares his experiences as one of the few hovercraft pilots in the world. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A HOVERCRAFT PILOT?
Yes, my first time on the water was the 1961 Round The Island Race in a cot on the aft deck of an already old Nicholson 32, named Rockaby. Since then I have participated in a further fifteen Round The Island Races.
Every day is different and no two crossings are ever the same; foreign ops are always a challenge. Also, great colleagues, good atmosphere and being out on the water in the fresh air.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A HOVERCRAFT PILOT?
Over time, inevitably requirements change. In the pioneering days of Hovertravel the early pilots were ex RAF qualified of which there are now none. Today, a fully qualified hovercraft pilot/ candidate must have achieved an STCW 95 certificate (training, certification and watch keeping for seafarers) from the MCA. So, Merchant Navy apprentice with four years sea time, exam pass and more sea time. Then time as an officer of the watch to gain experience of watches on the bridge by yourself and as part of a team. This is followed by 25 hours instruction on board with Hovertravel to include systems mechanical, structural, hydraulic,

electrical, navigation, full medical, eye sight test, procedures, safety, evacuation and training. Followed by 100 hours on the route with passengers under supervision by a Senior/Training Pilot. There are both TRI, Instructing Captains within the company and TRE, Examining Captains.
no way out except the way you went in. Thence to turn 180 degrees and hope the entrance hasn’t been blocked by raft ice. We used a laptop with satellite imagery from the geo department to find a safe run, but even that was sketchy and the signal often lost.
HOW MANY PILOTS ARE THERE AT HOVERTRAVEL?
WHAT PART OF THE WORLD WOULD YOU LOVE TO SAIL IN?
There are five full time and three part time. In the world there are probably sixteen full time, mainly connected to the Canadian Coastguard.
WHAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
Probably working in the Angola, Malongo/ Tekula and Caspian Oil Fields, serving the Actote and Kairan platforms. There were huge challenges everyday. We once undertook a delivery of two hovercraft the length of the Caspian 800 miles over ice in 20 hours. Everything froze: I froze, the toilet froze, the food froze, the screen wash antifreeze froze, pens for the logbook froze. The outside temperature was -42 C without the wind chill. At the base in Aktau one of the boiler suited engineers, while working on the soft structure of the craft, became frozen to the concrete and had to be helped by three others. The screen froze up for about eight miles, so I had to put my head intermittently out of the window so see, which was actually painful. Out there, there are no rescue services or navigational aids; the ice ridges change every day. A pilot has to be careful not to drive into a long corridor over several miles at the end of which is a dead end where ice has built up high and there is
As a Merchant Navy officer for twelve years I believe I have covered most areas of the world, but for me it would have to be the South of France. Let’s hope they find some oil there.
WHAT IS COMING UP IN 2015 ?
50 years of Hovertravel has to be a huge milestone; the company started on 14 June 1965. Equally, our newly developed hovercraft will arrive to replace the existing AP1 88/100s craft currently in use.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU?
I did six years RORC so I am, I suppose, more of a racing man. It has to be Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Eric Tabarly and Ben Ainslie, not in any order. Sir Robin for his non stop circumnavigation with a sextant, tin of beans and a leaking boat as his new boat wasn’t ready for the trip. Eric Tabarly for his grit and persistence. Sir Ben for his dedication; it is almost impossible to be so consistent in every race and to stay at the front.
WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING YOU HAVE SEEN ON THE SOLENT?
I have seen a dead whale, a shark, seal, dolphin and a rather splendid wooden go-kart, hundreds of footballs, a JCB off Ryde with only the bucket showing. There was also a black Labrador half a mile off Gilkicker. We called the police boat out and he was rescued. Last summer there was a man on a yellow inflatable lilo, totally unconcerned, in the main shipping channel 1.5 miles from Ryde. He must have been off to France for his holidays; he was rescued by a fisherman.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA READERS? I rarely miss reading All At Sea. I even won a book about Mainsail trimming for a spot the yacht competition several years ago. Here are two rules about sailing to enhance the fun of it: 1. Never shout, it rattles people and rarely achieves the aim. 2. Keep your rig up and your bilges dry. www.hovertravel.co.uk
“2015 is a very significant year for Hovertravel - a year in which we celebrate 50 years of operation” DID YOU KNOW?
Hovertravel carries an average of 15,000 passengers in a week
WHAT’S YOUR DREAM JOB?
Working for SMIT Salvage. This company is involved in recovery of just about anything that floats and some that don’t. They have a huge diversity of specially equipped vessels.

Solent based dinghy sailor david henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating.
Sailing then and now
Shining Star The Hamble Star is a classic dinghy that is not only still regularly sailed, but has an incredibly bright future.
50 years ago these were two immediately recognisable icons of the Solent. The ‘old’ Hamble Spit Buoy and the Hamble Star! Courtesy I. Underdown/HLHS Transporting boats 1950s style
At Erith Yacht Club the values of the Star were quickly recognised and moves were made to buy up boats when they appeared for sale The Hamble Star celebrates its 90th birthday this year. Courtesy Sarah Mees/EYC
THIS column in All at Sea has long championed the cause of classic dinghy sailing, for this is a very special part of our maritime heritage that could so easily be lost. Already, many of the traditional sailing dinghies that used to grace our shores have been lost, with at best just the one or two rare examples still struggling to stay afloat. This makes the case of the Hamble Star all the more extraordinary, for not only do a reasonable number of boats still exist, but they do so together as a class (albeit at a new home away from their original birthplace on the Hamble). The Star was initially developed as something of a ‘multi-purpose’ boat
that could be either rowed or sailed. The new boat was the same overall length as the ‘new’ 14ft dinghy that was destined to become the International 14, but apart from the length, there the similarity ended. To cope with the famous ‘chop’ experienced in the mouth of the Hamble River, the Star was given a sweeping bow profile. Moreover, the Hamble Star was something of a rarity, for although it was made of carvel construction, the hull form was of the hard chine variety. In keeping with other boats of that era, the construction of the hull was certainly robust, with 7/16th mahogany planking laid over a sturdy frame of bent

timbers. Another departure from the current norm was with the Hamble Star sail plan, for although the rig was so configured to enable the spars to be carried in the hull if needed, the boat still managed to set a very generous 110 ft² of sail. JAcK OF All TRADES Out afloat, the Hamble Star quickly proved its worth as the real ‘jack of all trades’. The handling was well mannered and predictable enough to allow for teaching beginners, yet when pushed hard by a more experienced helm was remarkably nimble for a boat of that era.
As well as clearly showing the hard chine hull form of the Hamble Star, this picture highlights the superb work done by the Michael Robinson Sailing Trust in helping to teach young people about the care and maintenance of traditional boats. Courtesy MRST
Little wonder that the Star was amongst the first dinghies to achieve real popularity at the rapidly growing Hamble River Sailing Club. With its sea kindly hull, the Star was not only used for racing, but come the festive season, would take part in a sail out to the Calshot Lightship to deliver Christmas presents to the Duty Crew. Come wartime the Stars would find that they were still needed on the river as general purpose tenders. Others would be pressed into service teaching RAF pilots some rudimentary sailing skills. Should they be forced to ‘ditch’ into the sea, the plan was that an ‘airborne lifeboat’ could be dropped to them, allowing the downed crew to head back towards the safety of the shore. HEADING EAST With the coming of peace dinghy racing returned to the Hamble River, but very quickly the area became a hotbed of dinghy innovation and the fortunes of the Star started to wane. However, up on the Thames estuary, a real ‘son’ of Hamble, Michael Robinson (who hailed from the Robinson family, who were somewhat legendary on the river) took his Star with him when he moved to the East. At Erith Yacht Club the values of the Star were quickly recognised and moves were made to buy up boats when they appeared for sale. In time, a full ‘bakers
dozen’ Stars were in place and when they were not sailing locally, a number of them would find their way over to the Netherlands for some real ‘Swallows and Amazons’ style holidays. STAR KEEPS SHINING The future of the Hamble Star class was made certain when, by making a very generous private donation, the Michael Robinson Sailing Trust was established, with the aim of teaching young people not only good sailing skills, but also the techniques of repairing and maintaining traditional craft. MINI MASTER CLASS
ALL AT SEA APRIL 2015 COLREGS are the law and must be complied with
THE Masterclass
PRACTICAL KNOW-HOW FROM THE RYA
HIGHWAY CODE OF THE SEA Whose responsibility is it to get out of the way? Who would be culpable if a collision, or even a near miss, occurred? Who should do what at what point to prevent a collision from occurring? Pleading ignorance of the rules in any prosecution case is not going to wash
even need to have occurred, simply that the regulations have been breached – is a criminal offence with a maximum penalty of two years in prison and/or an unlimited fine determined by a Law Court, depending on the severity of the incident. Rule one of the COLREGS states, “These rules shall apply to all vessels upon the high seas and in all waters connected therewith navigable by seagoing vessels.”
“Pleading ignorance in any prosecution case is not going to wash.” NO boat has absolute ‘right of way’ under the COLREGS - even the stand on boat is obliged to take avoiding action in some circumstances. Anybody using any sort of watercraft as a means of transport – whether motor or sail – should make themselves familiar with the COLREGS. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, more commonly known as the COLREGS, are quite simply, the Highway Code of the sea. The rules were introduced to make it clear when you are the stand on vessel,
when you are the give way vessel and what the correct action to take is when in close quarters with other vessels to avoid a collision. One of the biggest misconceptions about the COLREGS is they are a guidance document, something to help skippers understand who has ‘right of way’ in potential collision situations. Wrong! They are the law and you have to comply with the lot. Failure to comply with the COLREGS – and by that it means a collision doesn’t
“There are 38 separate Rules within the COLREGS”, explains Gus Lewis, RYA Head of Legal and Government Affairs, “and although some of them are clearly aimed primarily at large commercial vessels, in principle they apply to all vessels. For any set of rules to be effective in avoiding collisions, all vessels need to be following the same rules.” CURRENT COLREGS The current edition of the COLREGS was adopted in 1972 but the rules have been
amended several times since. The rules are divided into five parts A-E covering: ■ General Rules (A) ■ Steering and Sailing (B) ■ Lights and Shapes (C) ■ Sound and Light (D) ■ Exemptions (E) Although clearly all the COLREGS are important, the steering and sailing rules set out in Part B (Rules 4-19) are the ones likely to be most relevant to small boats operating in daylight, with good weather and good visibility. Rules 4-19 cover the following: ■ Look out ■ Safe speed ■ Risk of collision ■ Action to avoid a collision ■ Narrow channels ■ Traffic separation schemes ■ Overtaking ■ Head on situations ■ Crossing situations ■ Action by give way vessel ■ Action by stand on vessel ■ Responsibilities between vessels ■ Conduct of vessels in restricted visibility
Some of these are general good behaviour rules while others are very specific, prescribed obligations. ■ The RYA Day Skipper Theory course provides the first comprehensive introduction to COLREGS or if you are looking for shore-based instruction to learn them then the Essential Navigation and Seamanship course is a great supporting course for those new to boating, or as a refresher course, and is available in a classroom or online. ■ Visit the Courses and Training section of the RYA website – www.rya.org.uk/training - to find which course would best suit your needs and experience. ■ If you are an RYA member and find yourself in need of legal advice relating to the COLREGS, the RYA Legal team can assist with free guidance on the interpretation and scope and application of the rules. Email legal@rya.org.uk ■ Find out more about joining the RYA at www.rya.org.uk/membership

Cracking the case
A joint BMF and RYA initiative
Young detectives solve the mystery of Paradise Harbour at this year’s RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show.
DID you know that there are three main different types of fingerprint – an arch, a whorl and a loop and that everyone has their own unique DNA print? Or did you know that the Chinese mitten crab (named after its furry claws and one of the worst invasive species here in the UK) first appeared in the Thames in the 1930s? Or that Wakame, another non-native species, is also known as Japanese kelp? They might seem like random questions, but they provided much needed evidence and information to help hundreds of young visitors to this year’s RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show crack the show’s first ever fictional marine crime scene investigation into pollution in Paradise Harbour. Visitors to previous RYA Dinghy Shows have been treated to live displays of the invasive non-native species ‘Killer Shrimp’ to promote ‘Check Clean Dry’ to stop the further spread of alien invaders. And in 2014, The Green Blue encouraged visitors to convert human kinetic energy into electrical energy in a 30 second burst of pedal power on static bikes. This year The Green Blue’s interactive display featured four scenarios around marine litter, invasive non-native species, an oil spill and pollution from cleaning products that contain harmful chemicals.
There were six suspects to investigate
UNDER INVESTIGATION
With six suspects already identified (including Miss Sue Wage and Captain A. Foul who bore an uncanny resemblance to Dinghy Show Treasure Hunt Pirate
The RYA Junior Youth Mascot Bob the Buoy was on hand to help
Pete) and mug shots on show, it was up to the young detectives to solve each of the four cases and match suspects with the evidence. All with a helping hand from the RYA Junior Youth Mascot Bob the Buoy. Tasks involved unscrambling photographic puzzles to spot litter that had blown overboard and matching fingerprints taken from a leaky oil can that had been left on the slipway. Youngsters also had the chance to perform chemical tests to decipher the pH levels of water samples taken from suspects’ boats; how acidic or alkaline everyday products used on board can be and the effect this has on the marine environment. And last but not least, young detectives came face to face with a selection of marine alien species found here in the UK and tasked with finding out how they arrived in Paradise Harbour. Along with photographic evidence the display featured the ‘infamous five’ – Leathery sea squirt, Wakame, Wireweed, Slipper Limpet and Zebra Mussel – all preserved in resin and on loan thanks to the support from the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
THE WAY FORWARD
Water quality is so important to the enjoyment of boating and the RYA Dinghy show is always a great platform to engage with keen dinghy sailors. The four crime scene topics were potentially all types of pollution that dinghy sailors could encounter on a typical day out on the water, so it made the scenarios very relevant to their own sailing experience. And the popularity of The Green Blue’s marine CSI theme was proof that raising awareness of water quality in a fun and interactive way is a great way to keep people engaged in looking after the environment. Inspiring new (and older) generations is key to making sustainable boating second nature and interactive workshops and features are very much

RNLI rescues 23 people a day

RNLI
To be invited to sea by the Shoreham Harbour Lifeboats Coxswain Steve Smith aboard the Tamar allweather ALB Lifeboat ‘Enid Collett’ to join the crew on exercise was an opportunity not to be missed. It was also an opportunity to learn more about the extensive work carried out by the RNLI. tHe RNlI has been saving lives for almost 200 years, but it remains just as important that everyone who takes to the seas, including leisure sailors and those involved in the fishing industry, are kept up-to-date with their work keeping us save when we are on the water. “Fishing plays such an important part around our coastline and we have to be prepared to go to sea in all weathers to assist any fishing vessels that may need our assistance. As an occupation it is considered to be one of the hardest and most dangerous, and sadly with the many new rules and regulations linked to eU Quotas fishermen at times go to sea in conditions many others would not,” Steve Smith said. “Over the years lifeboat design and technology has changed,” he added. “We are so lucky to have a state-of-the-art tamar class AlB. It is 16.3m long, 5.3m wide and has a draft of 1.4m. With a fuel capacity of 4,6000l, the two Caterpillar C18 marine diesel engines (1.001hp each at 2,300rpm) give us a maximum speed of 25 knots with a range of 250 nm.”
RNLI TRAINING
Crew training is very important both for those at sea and those working ashore. “the RNlI makes sure we are covered in all aspects from first aid to radio communications,” commented Mark Blatcher, the station mechanic. “the RNlI has dedicated training teams that visit the station, along with a purpose built training centre at Poole in Dorset. We keep up-todate with regular in house training.” Paul Fisher, from the RNlI Operations Department, explained the use of radios. “Communication is so important and crews are trained to transmit whilst being constructive with their comments to all involved, especially the casualty who may well be in a situation where they need support
DID YOU KNOW? The biggest rescue in terms of people saved by the RNLI took place in 1907 when 456 people were rescued from the pleasure liner Suevic by lifeboats from Cadgwith, Coverack, the Lizard and Porthleven. During World War I lifeboats launched 1,808 times saving 5,332 lives. During World War II RNLI crews saved 6,376 lives. 1935 saw the last lifeboat launch using horses. It took place at Wellsnext-the-Sea. the inshore lifeboat often works in tandem with the all-weather lifeboat
to reassure them that all is fine and help is at hand.” Radio comms between lifeboat and casualty are important but not always possible. It can help guide the lifeboat to the incident whilst informing the crew of any possible hazards around them such as nets and lines still floating in the water.” He went onto say: “It is normally the mechanic who is the radio operator. However, we like to train the majority of the crew in these procedures. It is nice to know that many fishermen now attend courses to make sure they know exactly what to do in an emergency. there can be situations where those being rescued do not know or don’t have a working radio on board.
I cannot stress enough that mobile phones are not the most proven means of communication, and are easily lost when emergency situations arise.”
SEA EXERCISES
“to get those on board involved in a full range of exercises is what we try to do each time we go to sea,” Simon tugwell the Second Cox commented. “It is not a jolly, and even the youngest trainee crew members soon find out for themselves first-hand what life is like on the tamar.” Peter Huxtable MBe, Coxswain and a crew member for over 40 years, has seen a lot of changes both in boat design and crew training. “the technology crew have at their disposal now is
The charity that saves lives at sea tHe National Institution for the Preservation of life from Shipwreck was founded as a charity by Sir William Hillary in 1824. thirty years later, in 1854, crew members were issued with lifejackets, made of cork, for the first time and the name was changed to the more familiar Royal National lifeboat Institution It costs over £1,000 to kit out a crew
member and more than £1,200 each year to train them and keep their skills up-to-date. All the lifeboat crew and shore helpers, apart from the full-time mechanic, at Shoreham are voluntary and are on call 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. It receives no government funding and relies on voluntary donations, legacies and fund-raising.

Inflatable lifeboats were introduced in 1963 due to the increasing number of incidents close to shore. In 2001 RNLI lifeguards began patrolling beaches, initially in the south west. Since its foundation the RNLI has saved over 140,000 lives.

Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station
A night exercise with mCA Coastguard helicopter overhead
ShorehAm’S old lifeboat station was knocked down in January 2009. Work immediately began on the new lifeboat station to house the rNll’s new tamar-class lifeboat and its inshore lifeboat along with two new slipways. the resulting boathouse opened the following year in october 2010 following a three-year community appeal to raise £1million towards the build. the station’s £2.7million tamar lifeboat, called enid Collett after the late donor whose generous legacy funded the boat, arrived in Shoreham in December of that year. She had her
first operational shout two days later. there are two lifeboats at Shoreham, the All Weather lifeboat known as the AlB (enid Collett) and the Inshore lifeboat known as the IlB (Barry lazell). the lifeboat station is open 10am to 2pm monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday. there are fifteen volunteer tour guides to show people around the station and the rNlI souvenir shop is also open at the same time. take a look inside Shoreham lifeboat station: http://goo.gl/maps/JKX9a
duties. Crew rosters now see members from all walks of life. on board Shoreham’s lifeboat is a cabinet maker, warehouse manager, advertising executive, postman and others who give up a lot of their time to make up Shoreham’s crew.
SUPPORTING RNLI
An opportunity to see first-hand how the rNlI works can only encourage more people to support this charity, knowing that the sea gives way to no one. the rNlI is a deserving charity and an expensive one to run on a daily basis. Fund raising plays a key role and the many branches around the country see this is kept in the public eye supported by a strong headquarters. to find out how you can donate who become involved visit the rNlI website. The authors would like to thank Coxswain Steve Smith and the crew of the Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station for help in preparing this feature and for the time at sea.
stunning. the speed of the tamar and the working conditions often mean that in severe weather all can be done from inside the lifeboat unlike the old days when many had to work on deck. training has always played an important part, and before we launch the crews are fully briefed as to what they are going to be doing on a particular exercise.” If an opportunity is there, and a local fishing vessel is willing, the lifeboat will involve itself in a working exercise. “there is nothing like first-hand

experience and participating with others really makes a difference,” commented Steve, the Cox.
MIXED CREWS
many years ago a lot of lifeboat crews had fishermen as crew members. these days their work has to come first. of course their local knowledge has always played an important part when working on, say, a sectored search. this is not to say fishermen are not involved; many work behind the scenes in other station duties whilst some still manage crew
the long slipway often means a semi submerged entry into the water, which always appeals to the public watching
Peter huxtable mBe recalled the days many years ago when maroons were fired to launch a lifeboat. “It was often the case that the next day when we opened the boathouse we found money in envelopes put through the door. they may have woken people up at night but it helped raise funds. It is pagers now,” he said with a broad smile.

Skyscraper
Long before the word came to mean a high building it was the name given to the highest sail in the ship, Triangular shaped, made of very light cloth, it was used only in moderate weather. Sometimes a square sail was set in the same place and this was called a moonraker. Both skyscraper and moonraker were carried above the skysails. Occasionally they would run up an even higher one known as stargazer. After that they ran out of names.

Breakfast at Steff’s Kitchen
THE Boat Jumble comes to town on 26 April, bringing bargain hunters and traffic chaos to this picturesque village in the New Forest, home to the fairytale Palace House, the Michelin starred Montague Arms and the succulent Fairweathers Nursery, and also my Primary School.
FOR BREAKFAST
Steff’s Kitchen – Cyclists, gardeners, hungry hikers and limber locals flood into this airy, barn like building attached to Fairweathers Garden Centre. It has been at Beaulieu as long as I can remember. The breakfast is very popular and there is a good choice from the full English (£7.50) to Eggs Benedict and a bacon & egg sandwich. All eggs are free range and local. There is always a choice of hot lunch specials. I love their club sandwich, but it is the queue for homemade cakes and scones that always impresses me.

quietly and you may see a Kingfisher on the branches overhanging the water’s edge. It is an easy two-mile walk along a gravel path. The reward at the end? The Master Builder’s is a cosy hotel with bar attached. The restaurant looks out over gardens to the river and you can while away some happy hours before hitting the path home to Beaulieu. Hops choice: the steak, ale & kidney suet pastry pudding, followed by the lemon tart. The Sunday lunch at £19.95 for two courses is a popular choice.
If you partook of the full English above you might consider a scenic stroll along the riverbank to Bucklers Hard, part of the Beaulieu Estate. This unspoilt river is still alive with the calls of Curlews and Green Shanks. Walk
I carried on by bike and passed the skeletal remains of what was once an important base for the Cistercian Monks, the Abbey at Beaulieu. The Lay Brothers based here at St Leonards and the monks keeping their fishing boats at Gins Farm, now home to the RSYC, this was quite a prize for Henry VIII to ransack during the Reformation. That darned Cromwell again; I hope you were watching Wolf Hall? The quiet road that runs along to Sowley is a great ride. With the sea to the left and farmland all around, in no time at all I whizz into East End. For those who haven’t heard of the East End Arms, its claim to fame firstly is that it serves above average pub food and secondly that it is owned by bass guitarist
Beaulieu is home to the hugely popular Beaulieu Boat Jumble, but there is so much more for visitors to explore in this beautiful part of the country from the maritime museum to the Beaulieu River and woodland walks. The East End Arms, owned by bass guitarist John Illsley
John Illsley, who played for Dire Straits. He owns the George at Yarmouth as well as this warm hearted pub. The cosy dining room has a log fire burning and some great black and white photos on the walls and some classic portraits by David Bailey.
FOR DINNER
Luckily for me a bunch of regular diners came in just after me and nearly left the building when they saw that the fishcakes weren’t on and the treacle tart had gone. But John is a convivial guy and had soon checked with the chef who pulled forward some haddock and chive fishcakes that he had made for that evening and a new treacle tart – it was divine! Short pastry, just the right depth of golden goo and a tickle of lemon on the taste buds, but not too much – superb with their homemade vanilla ice cream.
THE BIKE
Hops choice: It has to be the beer battered fish & chips for me, this time Whiting, with crisp calamari to start, with a paprika mayonnaise. The fish white and flaky, just perfectly cooked. And for dessert – the treacle tart. Total with drinks £31. Now to the wine list. We already know that Ringwood Best and 49er are on tap and very well kept, as is the Thatchers, but the wine list has been selected by a local girl Helen McGinn, of some fame. You may have heard of the Knackered Mother’s Wine Club blog. Now Helen’s book has been published or follow her blog or on twitter @knackeredmutha.

And even more to like is the fact that she has selected my wine of the moment – Gruner Veltliner from Austria, fresh as the hills above Saltzburg and so clear you feel it must be bathing the liver. MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS
MYLOR YACHT HARBOUR
Mylor Yacht Harbour Mylor Churchtown, Falmouth, Cornwall, TR11 5UF Call: 01326 372 121 Email: enquiries@mylor.com Web: www.mylor.com
MYLOR Yacht Harbour with its contemporary marina, boatyard, eateries and clustered cottages combines stateof-the-art facilities with an illustrious maritime history, all set at the heart of one of the world’s most beautiful and sheltered waterways – the Carrick Roads on the south Cornish coast. Its understated elegance provides the peaceful haven for luxury yachts and fishing craft, transatlantic voyagers and day cruisers as well as a keenly competitive racing community. Visiting yachtsmen and women find a friendly welcome from the marina staff and expertise on-hand from Mylor’s
Marine Team of comprehensive boatyard specialists where all mechanical and service requirements are catered for. Mylor is secluded and tranquil yet it is a short hop across the water to the bustle of the historic Port of Falmouth or the glorious coast, coves, inlets and beaches of St Mawes and the Helford River. Two hundred years ago, in the great days of sail, Mylor was England’s smallest naval dockyard in one of the world’s most strategic ports. With consistent investment through the last 20 years it is now one of the South West’s busiest boatyards and marinas with first class pontoon berths and safe moorings anchored in some of the country’s finest sailing waters.
FACILITIES
THE waters off Mylor Yacht Harbour have been beloved of an international yachting community since the 1960s and the great Sir Ben Ainslie learned to sail here as a boy. In 1997 the new owners of the harbour, Roger and Dinah Graffy, set about a £5 million investment programme which would match the fabric and infrastructure of this Cornish gem to its sublime natural environment. Their vision has enabled the creation of a modern marina and onshore facilities, securing the preservation of the historic buildings, landscape and working traditions for future generations. Recent shore-side development has seen the building of a new yacht club, café and shops, shower blocks and a new marina office – along with the demolition of the dilapidated old yacht club in order to save and protect the Grade II Listed Quay on which it stood. Mylor’s boatyard thrives and expands with its Marine Team of master craftsmen and technicians with the expertise to match any vessel – ancient or modern –
from re-building or restoring the sleekest of classic yachts to the complete refurbishment of Cornish fishing boats. It is the only yard in recent years to build new, wooden Sunbeam classics – on exactly the same lines as their 90-year-old sisters – which race together as one of the most competitive fleets in the country. Mylor can accommodate boats up to 70ft and a maximum of a 3m draft, with 180 marina berths and 250 swinging moorings. Mylor’s boat hoist has the capacity to lift 35 tonnes and there is also a private slipway for use by Mylor Yacht Harbour as well as a public slipway. Berth holders have access to discounted fuel – petrol and diesel - as well as the modern shower block, electricity and water supply and use of the water taxi service. They can also take advantage of discounted stays in Mylor’s luxury self-catering holiday properties – Mylor Harbourside Holidays – and they have free shore storage, free parking and membership to Transeurope marinas. In addition, visiting yachts are a stone’s throw from the excellent onsite Café Mylor and Castaways restaurant with its emphasis on local produce including locally caught fish and seafood.

LOCATION
To get to Mylor Yacht Harbour by road follow the A30 to Carland Cross then the A39 to Truro. Follow the signs to Falmouth on the A39/A390, turning off to the left at Perranarworthal, just after the Norway Inn Public house (on the right). Follow the brown signs through Mylor Bridge to Mylor Yacht Harbour, taking care on the one small road coming into the harbour as there may be heavy lorries or machinery about. There are car parks on site. If you lose your way you can call the Mylor Yacht Harbour office on 01326 372 121 and staff will guide you in over the phone or alternatively a friendly local can point you in the right direction. One of Mylor’s great attractions is its secluded location and as such car,

LOCAL AREA
At Mylor Yacht Harbour you are right on the South West Coast Path and taking the beautiful coastline walk to Trefusis Point, round to Flushing gives views to St Mawes and Pendennis Castles, Falmouth Docks and Pendennis Shipyard, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the town of Falmouth. Looking out over the third deepest natural harbour in the world you get an idea of the immense wealth
taxi or bike (if you’re good on hills) are the best means of road transport in and out of the Harbour. But better still are the Falmouth water taxi services and Fal River ferry links, which can transport you across the water in any direction you wish. Any questions – just pop in to the Mylor Yacht Harbour office and ask.
ACCESS
Mylor is situated on the western shore of the Falmouth Estuary, commonly known as Carrick Roads. As you pass St Anthony Lighthouse and the large Black Rock marker at the entrance to the Carrick Roads you will see St Mawes on your starboard side and Falmouth and the Docks to port. Continue heading north up the Carrick Roads following the channel markers to stay in deep water. When
won Suzuki’s Aftersales Dealer of the Year award. Mylor Stores, located a mile away, is well stocked. For those looking for the larger supermarkets, Lidl, Sainsbury and Tesco are a short car ride away in Penryn and Falmouth. You can also have your online shopping order delivered direct to the harbour with www. cornishfoodmarket.co.uk.
of natural history, geography and geology that put Falmouth on the world maritime map. The National Maritime Museum and Pendennis Castle are both well worth a visit, as are St Mawes and its castle. Some of the country’s greatest gardens are close by too, with two fine sub-tropical ravine gardens created 200 years ago by the Fox family at Trebah and Glendurgan on the Helford or up towards Truro at Trelissick House.
“The waters off Mylor Yacht Harbour have been beloved of an international yachting community since the 1960s and the great Sir Ben Ainslie learned to sail here as a boy.” CRUISING
The waterways of the Carrick Roads and the coast around Falmouth Bay to Helford or past St Anthony Lighthouse to Porthscatho and beyond provide glorious, unspoilt sailing and scenery to rival anywhere in the world. Entering the harbour between King Henry VIII’s twin castles of Pendennis and St Mawes is a sight in itself. There are any number of day explorations around the Carrick Roads, the Fal and the Truro River including an un-missable trip past elegant St Mawes and Place House leading to the secret Percuil River. On a rising tide head up the Truro River as far as Malpas, past Trelissick House and the King Harry Ferry, with ancient oaks growing down to the water and barely a building to be seen in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
adjacent to St Just on your starboard side, turn to port and head due west straight for the Mylor channel markers at the edge of the moorings. Follow the marked fairway through the moorings and you will arrive at the entrance of the marina. The visitors’ pontoon is called E pontoon and is clearly signposted, surrounding the eastern side of the marina. Water, electricity and fuel are all available on this pontoon. The marina and moorings never dry and the marina and fairway are dredged to 2m below Chart Datum. If you have a draft of over 2m please take extra care on your approach to Mylor at low water. When nearing arrival contact Mylor Yacht Harbour’s marina on VHF Ch 37/80 and directions of where to go will be provided.
Falmouth Bay and the Helford River can be explored in a day – even as far as Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Frenchman’s Creek’. But to pick up a visitor’s mooring for an overnight stay is magical – think Cote d’Azure before the crowds arrived. For a weekend cruise Fowey is equally mesmerising and packed with historical and literary interest - or make a grand entry into Plymouth Sound. For a longer adventure both France and the Isles of Scilly are well within reach – and even the Channel Islands and southern Ireland. Clearly, up-to-date charts and tech are a must – these are rocky and spectacular shores. While the south coast is relatively protected, as soon as you head past the Lizard and Land’s End you will find significant wind and swell from the south west.
LOCAL EATERIES
Visiting sailors do not have to go far for great food and atmosphere – Café Mylor, Castaways Bistro & Restaurant and Mylor Yacht Club are just up the gangway from the pontoons. Nearby Falmouth is a buzzing hub of maritime and student activity with an enviable choice of eateries, pubs and clubs – from the quirky Dolly’s and Harbour Lights Fish & Chip Restaurant to the Wheelhouse and Oliver’s. Nearer still is The Waterside on Flushing Quay, the Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge (both an easy leg stretch around the headland or up river) or the famous Pandora Inn.
THINGS TO DO
Originally the most westerly Naval Dockyard and victualing station in England, then home to HMS Ganges and the Packet Ships and centre for the French Resistance during the Second World War, Mylor is now home to the last fleet of Oystermen working solely under sail and oar. It is also a renowned haven for water-lovers of all types. In 1805 the British Admiralty developed the site as a Royal Naval dockyard and from 1835 Royal Mail Packet Ships were maintained here. Many of the buildings at Mylor date back to this period and the current Harbourside holiday properties were originally their hospital.
In 1866 HMS Ganges was moored at Mylor and used as a training ship for cadets. During this time and into the early 1900s the harbour served as a service yard for watering and victualing ships. During the Second World War, American Navy personnel were stationed here to work on landing craft used in the D-Day landings. The harbour also served as a secret base for Free French Resistance fighters, from which they made undercover forays into occupied France. As such Mylor is a place where past meets present – a modern marine haven and working harbour which dates back over 200 years.
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Nicholas and Caroline Johnson are recent arrivals on the pontoons with their boat Scuba: “Suddenly boat life has become so much simpler. The need for complex and separate arrangements for moorings, boat launching and lifting, boat, engine, trailer and tender maintenance, boat repairs and spare parts, has miraculously vanished. All these services are now available to us in the marina. The Marine Team are friendly and communicative and we’ve found the workshop and lifting services to be helpful and efficient. Convenient parking, fuel and water (and coffee from Café Mylor) allow us so much more time afloat. This lovely location gives immediate access up the Fal to King Harry Ferry and beyond, or we turn seawards into Carrick Roads, via Falmouth, St Mawes, and out into Falmouth Bay.”

Dry Gin For Cowes Cowes Week Ltd and Chilgrove Dry Gin have announced a new supporting sponsorship
THIS is the first time a gin has been among the event’s supporting sponsors and, as the official gin, Chilgrove will be available at bars in the main marinas, on Cowes Parade and in local yacht clubs and bars. Gin aficionados may also be interested to know that Chilgrove is the first ever English London dry gin to be distilled from grapes instead of cereal grain. It was launched in June last year and founder Christopher Beaumont-Hutchings says there is a very strong historical provenance for the grape base.
DUTCH COURAGE
It is widely known that it was British mercenaries fighting in the Netherlands in the 1600s who found Dutch courage from a local spirit called ‘Jenever’ (Dutch for juniper) and, like any other travellers today, brought some back home with them. These supplies soon ran out and London gin-making was invented to replace it. “It’s a lesser known fact,” says Christopher, “that Jenever was originally made using alcohol distilled from wine. The change to a cereal-base occurred as a result of a wine shortage in Holland driven by the significant effects a ‘little ice age’ (around the 1590s) had on European viticulture.” Boutique premium gins have burgeoned over the last few years, many of them featuring in this column. There are over 50 from all parts of the country and I recently counted 22 gins on the shelf at my local Waitrose. The rationale for these new premium gins is always to create a better gin with ‘better’ quality spirit and a real taste difference. Under EU regulations, a London gin must conform with production methods which introduce the botanicals into the still during the actual distillation and juniper must be a dominant botanical, but they do not specifically state grain as the route to the base spirit.
Dry Gin as its unique grape base and eleven botanicals, including the mandatory juniper, are all included in the distilling process. The botanicals react differently to the grape spirit from how they do with grain spirit, producing a very soft gin with discernible citrus and juniper taste notes. Bottled at a robust 44 per cent abv in a distinctive, squared-up 70cl bottle that definitely will not roll off the cabin table, and traditional cork stopper, the gin is absolutely transparent, clear as air and smooth and silky on the tongue. Taste it neat first to appreciate the nose, then add ice and sip some more.
MINTY FLAVOURS
It carries its flavour well in a classic but superior G & T with a sprig of fresh mint recommended instead of lime or lemon. At a shelf price of around £30 per 70cl bottle it deserves a good quality tonic. Regular Schweppes, Fentimans or Fever Tree will do nicely. Chilgrove’s Cowes Week presence will provide plenty of opportunities to taste it by the measure. Carpe diem! But if you can’t wait until August, Chilgrove’s growing distribution is listed on www.chilgrovegin.com
LONDON GIN
Somewhat confusingly, therefore, ‘London Gin’ is a type of gin and not a geographical descriptor in the way that the AOC for Cognac or Calvados is. So Chilgrove, distilled in Sussex in the hamlet of the same name, fully qualifies to be a London
