Cowes Harbour Commission has reported that a new provisional timeline for the Cowes Outer Harbour Project has been agreed with the Homes and Communities Agency and the HCA’s development partners VQEL. The harbour infrastructure is due to be delivered under a ‘Harbour Infrastructure Funding Agreement’ between the HCA, their developers and CHC, with work on the Eastern Channel dredge and Shrape extension now planned for the last quarter of the year, potentially starting soon after Cowes Week. However, CHC emphasises that this is still very much a provisional timeline.

By Jane Hyde A great deal of work is being carried out to prepare Portsmouth Harbour for the arrival of the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers. While The Princess Royal paid a visit to the site and named the jetty that will house the ships, it seems the first ship will not be arriving as expected. Instead of looking forward to the imminent arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth, we have no fixed date and definitely not a spring arrival. A date we do have in the diary, albeit several years away, is the next Vendée Globe. As you will read in this month’s news pages, work is well underway to, hopefully, have more British competitors in the 2020 Vendée Globe. One of those working towards 2020 is our columnist Lizzy Foreman, and we look forward to reading about her progress as she aims to join the exclusive list of sailors, including Alex Thomson and Ellen MacArthur, who have taken on this incredible race. In the last Vendée Globe, which began in November, Alex Thomson was the sole British entrant amongst a French dominated line-up. His second place was an incredible achievement, but Alex already has his eyes set on 2020, hopefully alongside Lizzy and a number of other Brits. Turn to page 20 for your chance to win a sail with Alex on board HUGO BOSS. This is an incredible opportunity to sail with one of Britain’s greatest sailors. We caught up with Alex, post Vendée Globe, to find out more about the race and to see what life back on land holds for him this year. One of the key things he is looking forward to is spending quality time

with his family, and sailing offers a great way of doing just this. Whether you are new to boating or would like to get your children or grandchildren more involved we have lots of features this month looking at, for example, how families can move up from dinghies to yacht sailing and also how to get kids into sailing. A great place to start will be next month’s RYA Push The Boat Out. Many clubs around the country will be throwing open their doors and welcoming people of all ages to have a go at boating. This is just one of many events coming up which offer taster sessions. We have been putting together All at Sea’s special summer events guide, which you can read next month, and you definitely will not be short of regattas, open days, festivals and shows this year. One of 2017’s biggest events kicks off in May, far away from our shores, in Bermuda, and that is the America’s Cup. Turn to page 39 and you can enter a fabulous competition to win a year’s supply of Goslings Black Seal Rum, the official rum of the 35th America’s Cup. Lastly, congratulations (again!) to Gavin Reid who has won the Cruising Club of America’s 2016 Rod Stephens Trophy for Outstanding Seamanship after swimming to a boat in distress during the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Race and rescuing one of its crew members. This is the latest in a number of awards for this amateur sailor who was born profoundly deaf. Enjoy the issue and, of course, your new season of boating. Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk
ROYAL APPROVAL FOR JETTY DESPITE DELAY Image: UK Crown copyright 2017

FROM COVER... Although HMS Queen Elizabeth will no longer arrive in Portsmouth this spring, the Princess Royal has officially named the jetty that will house the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers. The Princess unveiled a plaque at Portsmouth Naval Base officially naming the vast berth as The Princess Royal Jetty. It will be home to the Royal Navy’s two 65,000-tonne Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. Formerly known as Middle Slip Jetty, the berth has been upgraded and strengthened to support the carriers as part of a raft of infrastructure upgrades taking place ahead of the arrival of the first ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth. During her visit the Princess met some of the workers involved in the jetty’s twoyear refurbishment, as well as Royal Navy
bomb disposal experts responsible for safely disposing of historic ordnance. As reported last month, a number of wartime devices have been uncovered by dredging work in preparation for the arrival of the two new aircraft carriers. The Portsmouth Naval Base Commander, Commodore Jeremy Rigby, hosted the visit by The Princess Royal. “It was a privilege to welcome Her Royal Highness back into the naval base to officially name this historic jetty,” said Cdre Rigby. “Work continues at a pace to get our naval base ready for the arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth later this year and the excitement builds as we now enter the final stages of work, testing and training ahead of her arrival.” The jetty, parts of which date back over
90 years, has been refurbished in addition to the dredging of the approach channel, inner harbour area and berth in order to make them deep and wide enough for the new ships, moving three million cubic metres of clay, sand and gravel from an area the size of 200 football pitches. Minister for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin said:“The work on The Princess Royal Jetty is a fantastic example of how we are investing in the future of the Royal Navy and is the culmination of £100m of infrastructure upgrades in Portsmouth in preparation for our two new aircraft carriers.” The Royal Navy’s £3 billion aircraft carrier will arrive in Portsmouth later than had been anticipated. She was expected to leave Scotland for sea trials in April and reach the South Coast in May. Now it is thought she will sail for the first time in the summer, arriving in Portsmouth later in the year. Lt Gen. Mark Poffley, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff for Military Capability, said: ”There have been a series of technical issues associated with bringing the vessel to the point where she can commence her sea trials.” However, the MoD says the ship, the biggest ever built for the navy, is still on track to enter service with the fleet on time.

IN SIR ROBIN’S FOOTSTEPS
MIKE Golding OBE, one of the world’s most successful offshore sailors, has been named president of London’s cruising and training yacht club, the Little Ship Club. Mike takes over from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world. “I am delighted and honoured to accept the role of president of the Little Ship Club,” Mike said. “Following Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s presidency gives me some giant footsteps in which to follow and I hope also I can bring some fresh perspectives to the position.” The 56-year-old sailor has won numerous podium places and held several world records, including being the first person to race around the world in both directions. The LSC is a cruising and training club, with a clubhouse in a prime location overlooking the Thames. It has been a training pioneer, with links to the Royal Navy, and has an active winter and summer sailing programme. Anne Billard, LSC Commodore, said: “We could not be prouder to be associated with a sailor of Mike’s calibre.” Mike came to prominence when he broke Sir Chay Blyth’s world record for sailing around the world single-handed, non-stop against prevailing winds and tides by 125 days in 1993/4. A few years later he won the BT Global Challenge, a round the world race crewed by amateur sailors, before going on to claim third place in arguably one of the most gruelling events, the Vendée Globe, in 2004/5.But, perhaps, he will be best remembered for rescuing fellow competitor Alex Thomson in the Southern Ocean during the Velux 5 Oceans in 2006/7. “His rescue of Alex Thomson is the stuff of legend,” said Anne. “I remember watching it live: it was nail-biting stuff. Although he did the only thing any sailor would do, it still has an enormous romantic appeal.”

VISION FOR THE VENDÉE GLOBE
Cross-Solent ferry operator Red Funnel, which employs 450 people, has been put up for sale. The price for the company, which has invested heavily in its two routes over the last few years, is £250 million. Red Funnel chief executive Kevin George said: ““We remain totally committed to offering safe and reliable services, value for money and great customer service now and into the future.” Britain’s Alex Thomson finishing second in the 2016-2017 Vendée Globe, but he was the sole UK entrant. WIGHT TUNNEL?
A company, Able Connections Ltd, has been set up by a campaign group to speed up the bid to create a tunnel between the Isle of Wight and Gosport or Fareham. Carl Feeney, chairman of campaign group ProLink, said the company would help open doors for the campaigners to aid with a feasibility study into the £1.2bn tunnel. Residents are asked to give their thoughts on the plans at surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ FLFeasibilitystudy.
THE 2016-2017 Vendée Globe was a hugely successful event with Britain’s Alex Thomson finishing second. The final competitor, Sébastien Destremau, crossed the finish line on 11 March in eighteenth place after 124 days, 12 hours, 38 minutes and 18 seconds of racing. Sébastien finished 50 days after the winner, Armel Le Cléac’h. Of the 29 skippers who lined up at the start of the race in November, 18 were ranked. This is a record number in the history of the Vendée Globe. Of the 11 boats to retire, four were dismasted and five had collisions leading to the loss of one (Kito de Pavant’s in the middle of the Indian Ocean) and a further two retired with other damage.
In terms of the technology, the new foiling monohulls confirmed their efficiency with four out of seven making it home and three taking the podium places. Records were smashed along the way too with winner Armel Le Cléac’h and runnerup Alex Thomson claiming seven records between them including the fastest Vendée Globe ever in 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes and 46 seconds. However, although the Vendée Globe has only just finished, in Southampton work continues to train up British sailing talent to give them the best chance of competing in the next Vendée Globe in four year’s time. This comes at a vital time. In the 2008-9 Vendée Globe there were seven British entries, while for 2016-17 there
was just one, Alex Thomson. In its first year, Vendée2020Vision helped with the coaching and development of a 10-strong squad of Britain’s top aspirant solo skippers. For 2017, this field has been narrowed to six and will be pared down further towards the end of this season when the intention is for the two top contenders to take part in November’s Transat Jacques Vabre doublehanded transatlantic race. Whitecap, the Southampton-based company which runs Vendée2020Vision, has now confirmed the 2017 squad: Sam Matson, Will Harris, Sam Goodchild, Andrew Baker, Henry Bomby and All at Sea contributor Lizzy Foreman. While the sailors are experienced in smaller boats, such as the 32ft
GOSPORT MARINE FESTIVAL 2017
Figaro Beneteau II and 21ft Mini, with Vendée2020Vision they are provided with the opportunity to train on board a substantially larger IMOCA 60, of the type raced in the Vendée Globe. On board the Artemis Ocean Racing IMOCA 60 the sailors are shown the ropes by Vendée2020Vision’s head coach, former Vendée Globe competitor and recordbreaking round the world yachtswoman, Dee Caffari. You may be the best sailor in the world, but that means nothing unless you can get to the start line. Therefore it is vital for Vendée Globe competitors to have the skills needed to raise sponsorship and funding not just to purchase a boat but to run a campaign too. A team expecting to have race winning potential will require a budget of several million pounds. To help them secure these funds, Vendée2020Vision sailors are provided with commercial support covering networking and pitch development together with other boardroom and business tuition. Good fitness is also essential for singlehanded offshore racing, so the six Vendée2020Vision sailors will undergo physical assessments with the aim of reaching defined fitness targets. To improve their prospects out on the water, leading international navigator Wouter Verbraak will be running a course for the Vendée2020Vision sailors on meteorology and strategy. A sought-after navigator, Verbraak has previously trained the all-women’s crew on Team SCA in the last Volvo Ocean Race and worked on prerace navigation for Alex Thomson’s recent Vendée Globe campaign. Turn to page 21 to read this month’s interview with Alex Thomson and readLizzy Foreman’s latest column on page 34.

NEW PONTOON
MDL Marinas, the official marina partner to Land Rover BAR, is helping the team gear up for the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda. The marina operator has worked closely with Land Rover BAR to help set up their team base in Bermuda and has created customised pontoons, designed to give swift access for the team and accommodate the crucial support boats. The pontoon has the ability to rotate 90 degrees, which will allow the team to berth the boat in all wind directions and stay attached to the shore. The pontoon was constructed in Southampton and has travelled 3,400 miles to reach Bermuda, where it is now undergoing trials as part of the team’s intensive training programme.

TEENAGER WINS PLACE IN REGATTA
Simon Malins, duty port controller, and Drusilla Barnes
A London teenager is set to swap school books for the rigours of the open sea when she joins a crew for leg one of a transatlantic journey that begins on the Thames at Greenwich. Sixth form student Drusilla Barnes, 16,
won the chance to take part in RendezVous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta after being a winner in an essay-writing competition. She is being sponsored by the Port of London Authority and will be at sea for the 14-day voyage on board one of the Tall Ships destined for Sines in Portugal. Her duties will include rigging the sails, navigating and steering at the helm. Drusilla, who is studying at the John Roan School in Greenwich, said: “When I finish studying, I want to work abroad and travel to different countries, and I thought this might be a great way to get started, while learning new skills and making friends.” The race, organised by Sail Training International, will see Drusilla and 50 other sponsored trainees from Greenwich
depart the Port of London in the grand Parade of Sail that marks the end of the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival. After a recent visit to the PLA headquarters in Gravesend to meet the team and learn about their work, Drusilla said: “I had a tour of Port Control, which is like air traffic control for the river. At school we were taught about imports and exports, but I did not realise the number of cars that were shipped to the UK via the Thames.” With 95 per cent of UK imports arriving by sea, the PLA is encouraging young people from all backgrounds to consider a career in maritime and ports. TOP YOUNG SAILORS DO BATTLE AT YOUTH FISH OF THE DAY AMERICA’S CUP NOW in its third year, Premier Marinas will be hosting a Fishing Show at Southsea Marina on 6 May from 10am to 4pm. Over the course of the day, a range of contributors will showcase their services and fishing products, from specialist fishing boats to bait and tackle providers, marine electronics, fish deli providers, marine and engineering companies and suppliers of safety equipment and bespoke fishing kayaks. As well as being able to try and buy from exhibitors, visitors will be able to take part in a boat jumble and a
free lifejacket check clinic run by the RNLI as well as listen to a series of presentations throughout the day from a team of sea angling experts located in the Q&A marquee. Rupert Bremer, Southsea Marina Manager, said: “Last year our Fishing Show featured a Q&A tent which hosted talks from four sea angling experts and a cooking demonstration by none other than Rick Stein’s son Jack. Incredibly popular with visitors, this year we intend on running it again, alongside a boat jumble”. Admission to the show is free with first-come, firstserved parking available.

WORK has started on the first phase of the Poole Harbour Commissioner’s masterplan, which will provide the commercial port with a new 200m long deep water quay. The £10 million project, which is due for completion by the end of 2017, will ensure that the Port remains competitive with facilities that can accommodate a much wider range of shipping and marine activities. “This is an important step forward in the expansion of the Port,” said Jim Stewart, PHC’s Chief Executive. “It means we will be able to accommodate vessels up to 220m long in a variety of different sectors including yacht transportation, bulk cargo, short sea containers and project cargo. As a result, we expect to see up to a 50 per cent increase in tonnage in cargo across the quays. “It will also allow us to take advantage of the rapidly expanding cruise market. At present

we can only take smaller cruise ships but, with these new facilities, we will be able to accept visiting cruise ships accommodating over 1,000 passengers. All this means we will be able to strengthen links between the Port and the local economy, in particular the significant cluster of marine related and tourism industries in the Poole area,” he added. The new quay will need approximately 1,800 tons of steel piles, all of which will be delivered by sea. In addition, the majority of the material reclamation fill is to be taken directly from the port’s maintenance dredging scheme. This approach removes the need for road deliveries and uses a ‘waste’ product in the new construction. And, in order to ensure that local companies benefit from this project, all marine plant has been sourced from suppliers in Poole and Southampton.

HANNAH AIMS FOR OLYMPIC HISTORY
Hannah Mills in 49erFX training alongside Alain Sign. Image: Nick Dempsey Photography/British Sailing Team
HANNAH Mills is a woman on a mission. She wants another gold medal at Tokyo 2020, which, when added to her Rio gold and London silver, would see her become Britain’s most successful female Olympic sailor and top the women’s global medal table in the sport as well. However instead of going back to the trusted 470 women’s two person dinghy which she has known and loved for a decade, Hannah is going back to school and is attempting her historymaking feat in the 49erFX. It is a huge physical and mental challenge for the 29-year-old to make the jump from tight, tactical competition in a well-known boat alongside a well-known crew, to fast and furious racing with a new partner in the notoriously hard to handle high performance women’s skiff, which saw its Olympic Games debut at Rio 2016. But with teammate Saskia Clark retiring from Olympic campaigning post-Rio, Hannah felt the time was right for a new challenge, to test her
limits as a sailor and an athlete and attempt to qualify for her third Olympics in a new event. “The FX to me just presents such a new and exciting shift. Every day I go sailing I am scared, I am excited, I am laughing so much!” said Hannah. At the Games and other key World Sailing events the FX is an all-female event, but she will spend the first part of the year getting up to speed alongside experienced male crew Alain Sign, who competed alongside Dylan Fletcher in the 49er – big brother of the FX – for the past 10 years and at the Rio Games. Hannah said: “He is one of the best crews in the world in the 49er class. It was about using what we have got within the British Sailing Team, which is a lot of resources, and linking that up so I can be fasttracked and hopefully that will help me master the boat quicker than I could do otherwise.” Turn to page 35 to read Hannah’s tips on goal setting and how to go about achieving your aims. www.britishsailingteam.com

NEW BEDS BOOST ENGLISH TOURISM THE English tourism market is being boosted by a unique concept to add 20,000 beds without any impact on the country’s environment or infrastructure. Beds on Board uses empty boats already moored in marinas as accommodation to rent out to tourists. There are already more than 300 boats in the UK and another 700 around the world. The boats are varied including luxurious yachts in stunning locations, motor cruisers and houseboats. Others sit firmly in the affordable end of the market with prices starting from just £40 per night with quirky options, all offering the chance to experience
the locations from a new perspective. Jason Ludlow, who started the business with his brother Tim, said: “We are targeting to add 20,000 beds to the market at a time when the staycation is booming and Visit England predicts inbound tourist numbers to leap to 38 million, up from 31 million just five years ago. “Our model helps tourism by selling thousands of beds without building hotels and the infrastructure needed to support them. It does not drive up the price for locals because these are spaces that were never being used.” www.bedsonboard.com
ONBOARD is about more children and young people, aged 8 - 18, learning to sail and windsurf. More importantly, it is about keeping them involved in sailing, for life. OnBoard is being relaunched in June with an even bigger focus on helping to keep kids sailing for longer by really inspiring families and teachers about the life skills benefits sailing can give. Alistair Dickson, RYA Director of Sport Development, said: “We know the life skills and positive attributes sailing can bring a child or young person. The new OB is about really harnessing
and communicating these to help families and schools see beyond sailing as a sport but rather as an activity that embeds traits that can shape a child’s life. “We believe this new focus will help us achieve better retention, while OB clubs and centres can feel they are having an even more positive impact on a child’s future.” Over the next few months clubs and centres will receive new resources including instructor sessions cards, rash vests and prizes. Turn to page 28 to read more about getting kids into sailing.

MAJOR INVESTMENTS AT MAIDEN’S VOYAGE HOME FAMBRIDGE YACHT HAVEN YACHT Havens Group, owner of nine premier yachting facilities in the UK and the Netherlands, has taken delivery of a new MK III Marina Master 8000 Dredger at its Fambridge Yacht Haven location in Essex. The Marina Master 8000 has been designed and project managed by Goodchild Marine, and built by Italian manufacturers Italdraghe and will dredge their 220-berth marina, Fambridge Yacht Haven, on the east coast. With a 10-year dredging licence from the Marine Management Organisation, the dredger will focus on Stow Creek leading from the deepwater River Crouch into the marina, its access channels and between the pontoons to allow for full-tide access. Fambridge Yacht Haven will also take delivery of a new 40-ton boat hoist this spring, increasing their boat lifting capacity. The new hoist will be one of the largest on the River Crouch and, with extensive indoor and outdoor boat storage, Fambridge will now offer one of the most comprehensive boatyard facilities on the east coast. The current 25-ton hoist will be refurbished and relocated to Fambridge’s Yacht Station facility where it will continue to offer boat lifting for winter storage.
Marina Manager Danyal Adams said: “A deeper, full-tide marina and a larger boat lifting capacity will allow many more boat owners to bring their boats to Fambridge. Our peaceful and pretty village location on the River Crouch is less than an hour away from London, so we hope these new improvements will appeal to a wider range of boat owners looking to escape the city.” www.yachthavens.com/fambridge
MAIDEN, which carried the first all-female crew to ever sail around the world in 1990, has left the Seychelles bound for Southampton and a much needed re-fit. In the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race Maiden won two legs and came second overall, which was the best result for a British boat since 1977. Significantly, it has never been beaten. After the race, skipper Tracy Edwards MBE had to sell Maiden, but two years ago the boat was discovered abandoned and rotting in the Indian Ocean. Tracy set up the Maiden Rescue project and began fundraising to get her home to the UK.
Tracy said: “She will be put to work as an Ambassador Girls’ Rights. We will work with organisations who facilitate education for girls currently denied that basic right, a cause about which I am passionate. “Maiden is an icon of female empowerment, ability and the will to succeed against all the odds. We must ensure the basic human right of every girl to attend school.” Filming has begun for a TV show which will follow the rescue and restoration of Maiden and also the selection and training of her new crew. www.themaidenfactor.org
NEW WILDLIFE GUIDE THE Green Blue has launched a new wildlife guide for boaters. The UK has an amazing array of marine wildlife, from the magnificent basking shark and the bottlenose dolphin to the unmistakable puffin and stunning razorbill. The Green Wildlife Guide for Boaters is designed to advise boaters how to get the best experience out of their wildlife encounters by acting responsibly and cautiously
to minimise the risk of disturbance while keeping participants and their boats safe. With beautiful illustrations created by Pete Galvin, the key message to boaters who find themselves close to marine wildlife is to think speed, and be steady, predictable, quiet and cautious. PREPARED TO TAKE CONTROL ALTHOUGH 40 per cent of crew who take on the Clipper Race have no previous sailing experience, there are many experienced sailors amongst the fleet. A number of these more experienced crew members have undertaken a 12-day intensive Clipper Race Coxswain Certificate course ahead of the 2017-18 race start in August. The CRCC is designed in collaboration with the Maritime Coastguard Agency, specifically for the Clipper. The aim of the CRCC is to have three trained crew members on board each boat in the fleet who could, in the rare case of an emergency that incapacitates
the skipper, take charge of the vessel and proceed to the nearest safe haven. Although rare, there have been occasions when Coxswain Crew Members’ training has been called upon. Skipper Jim Prendergast, who skippered Unicef during the 2015-16 edition, suffered from kidney stones whilst racing across the Southern Ocean to Albany, Western Australia. As Jim’s condition developed the CRCC trained crew members, who were in constant contact with the Clipper Race Director, safely took charge of the boat and crew for the remainder of the leg until Jim could receive treatment.

The Ionian Sea is truly beautiful. Electric blue water, sandy beaches, Greek tavernas on the seashore and lots of lush vegetation make it an ideal sailing location. There are two main sailing regions in the Ionian: around the islands of Corfu and around Lefkada. The downside of Corfu is that the coastline of the mainland is not so interesting. Therefore Naleia prefer to go for more sightseeing value, sailing directly from Lefkada. From here a multitude of locations open up: Meganisi island with its countless bays, deserted Arkoudi, uninhabited Athokos, green and wild Ithaka (home of the Odysseus) and, of course, Kefalonia with its Myrtos beach. All the islands have very rich shorelines and offer multiple wild bays to anchor for a night. There are also numerous little ports and town quays and much less mass tourism than around Corfu. There is a skippered sailing holiday in the last week of June offering options for booking solo. www.naleiayachting.com

FAMILY FLOTILLAS Here is some handy info from Lucy Black, Head of Marketing at Sunsail, about why flotilla holidays are the perfect sailing adventure for your whole family. WHATEVER your level of sailing experience, flotillas are perfect for families looking for fun on and off the water, with a balance of support and autonomy. Sailing together on a flotilla gives everyone the chance to unwind as little or as much as they like. Flotilla itineraries are planned with short hops between stops, and plenty of places to see in between. You will be guided by a lead crew including a skipper, host and technician who are on hand to make sure you have a fantastic holiday, from daily briefings and organising social events to ironing out any niggles along the way. It is a common myth that all the boats sail together like a row of ducklings, but the reality is that flotilla sailing gives each yacht the freedom to be as independent or as sociable as they like. There are lots of opportunities to find the perfect swimming spot, row the dinghy to a secluded bay or fish off the back of the boat.
CHILDREN LOVE IT
Children will always have something to do, see or explore on a flotilla, from treasure hunts to water
activities. For example, the special summer Sunsail flotillas from Lefkas, Greece have a dedicated activity coordinator, who plans games and activities for the smallest of sailors. Helena Lucas MBE, Paralympic gold medallist and Sunsail ambassador reflects on her childhood holidays, saying: “Although I learnt how to sail when I was eight-years-old, I did not fall in love with sailing until I was about 10 and we went on a flotilla holiday in Greece with Sunsail. “I remember having so much fun sailing with the friends I had made on holiday and spending most of our time mucking about and swimming in the beautiful warm waters. I could not wait to go to Junior Helm Week at my local sailing club, Crawley Marinas, and I have never looked back.”
NO WORRIES
Charter companies take care of the sailing holiday essentials, and cover everything from child safety nets to lifejackets, as well as ensuring you have the right yacht. From Greece’s sheltered harbours and dramatic scenery, to island hopping in Croatia and easy cruising in the Bahamas, when it comes to destinations you are spoiled for choice. Your charter company can help you pick the perfect holiday destination for your family. www.sunsail.co.uk Right: Making them great for families, the summer Sunsail flotillas from Lefkas, Greece have a dedicated activity coordinator
DON’T FORGET!
As well as swimwear and suncream, you should pack waterproof and windproof jackets, so that everyone can keep dry and enjoy great sailing. A fleece or warm jumper is a great addition, so you can stay out and enjoy the cool Mediterranean evenings. A good pair of sunglasses with UV protection (ideally polarised) are an absolutely essential item too.

30 MINUTES WITH
ALEX THOMPSON
Q&A with Alex Thomson who finished second in the Vendee Globe in January, and in doing so broke his own British record of 80 days for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in a monohull. Alex finishes the Vendee Globe after 74 days, 19 hours and 35 minutes at sea. Image: Lloyd Images
YOU SUFFERED DAMAGE TO HUGO BOSS EARLY ON. HOW DID THAT CHANGE YOUR RACE TACTICS?
Essentially, losing the starboard foil meant I could not perform as well on port tack, so I really had to maximize the opportunities I got when the wind favoured using my remaining foil. I showed I had the fastest boat in the race when using my port foil and when I was on port tack it was just about pushing harder to stay in contention. Although the stump initially left behind looked rather sorry for itself, I certainly was not.
WERE YOU AWARE OF THE EXTENT OF THE PUBLIC SUPPORT DURING THE RACE?
The level of support I receive is always overwhelming, and this race was no different. People often ask if I get lonely whilst competing, but I am inundated with so many messages of support from all over the world. It is really heartwarming that people I do not even know are willing me to win.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SECOND PLACE IN THE VENDEE GLOBE. HOW DID IT FEEL TO CROSS THE FINISH LINE?
I was just delighted to have finished. All I wanted to do was sleep! I think it only sunk in earlier that morning that I was actually going to finish. My first meal back on dry land was a cheeseburger and chips; it certainly made for a nice change from the freeze-dried food I had been depending on for the previous two-and-ahalf months.
YOU ARE ALREADY THINKING ABOUT THE NEXT VENDEE GLOBE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS RACE THAT KEEPS DRAWING YOU BACK?
IT WAS AN INCREDIBLY EXCITING FINISH TO THE RACE. DID YOU THINK YOU WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO CATCH ARMEL?
I was determined to fight right until the end. There was a real chance to pass him close to the finish. Essentially, there was a ridge of high pressure which could have given me a chance to catch up with Armel if I had crossed the ridge first but it was not to be.
Alex crossed the Equator in first place and in the fastest time ever in the Vendee Globe. Image: Alex Thomson Racing
Coming third in 2012, second this time around, it is obvious what people expect next. There are a few reasons why I have dedicated so much of my life to this gruelling race. Firstly, I am incredibly competitive. If I play squash or tennis I leave with cuts and bruises. Secondly, it is the challenge. More people have been into space and climbed Everest than have sailed non-stop round the world. So, in terms of sporting challenges, this is the real deal. Then there is the fact you sail a boat designed just for you. If you were in to cars it is basically the equivalent of being able to build a customracing machine just for you. In terms of boys toys it does not get any better than this. Image: Cleo Barnham
Image: Cleo Barnham
WE HAVE LOVED THE EXTREME SAILING STUNTS YOU HAVE BEEN VIDEOING. WHICH WAS YOUR FAVOURITE AND HAVE YOU ANY MORE PLANNED?
I have always been a bit of a thrill seeker. The stunts began with the Keelwalk, which was back in 2009. As a team we devised a plan to get me out on the water, dressed in a HUGO BOSS suit and dive off the end of the keel into the water. Stunt number two was the Mastwalk. The concept was something that the team and I had been looking into for a long time but it was something that none of us were sure was even possible. I took diving lessons in a pool from a 10m board but I knew that, if we were able to go ahead with the Mastwalk, the diving experience would be very different from anything I had practiced beforehand. I would not be in a closed, controlled environment - I would be on a boat moving at high speed, out on the water, in the open... and I would be jumping from a much greater height. So, naturally, we had to complete the trilogy. The concept for the Skywalk came from my will to combine two of my favourite loves – sailing and kitesurfing. There were a lot of elements that had to come together to make it work. It was by far the biggest campaign we have done to date. Will I do another stunt? Well, the Skywalk completed a trilogy of stunts for the Alex Thomson Racing team, but I am always open to ideas…
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU GET SOME RELAXATION TIME? When I am not competing and I am away with my family, I really try to switch off. We do lots of things together and kiting is always a good release and provides an opportunity to relax.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR SAILORS ASPIRING TO TAKE ON RACES LIKE THE VENDEE GLOBE?
Practice, practice, practice! Get out on the water as much as possible. For me, sailing a boat is as natural as walking down the street, and that is because I am so comfortable out on the water.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU THIS YEAR?
“ More people have been into space and climbed Everest than have sailed non-stop round the world”
After returning from an extended holiday in the Caribbean over Easter, next up for me will be the Fastnet Race in August – starting in Cowes and finishing in Plymouth. Just the 608 miles to cover for this one, which pales in comparison to the 25,000+ covered in the Vendee!

GREEN FOCUS
THE WILD SIDE
The Green Wildlife Guide for Boaters
The Green Blue Making the environment second nature
By being steady and predictable on the water this season and you might get to enjoy even more of the amazing wildlife around our shores. Jane Swan, The Green Blue Project Manager The shearwater is just one of many UK seabird colonies
T
here is nothing that causes a stir of excitement on board more than spotting a dolphin on the bow wave. At certain times of the year you may also be lucky enough to come alongside gargantuan basking sharks as they journey from the south west through Cardigan Bay, along the Isle of Man and Strangford Lough and on to the west coast of Scotland. From May to September, they are at the surface, mouths agape, often in a feeding induced trance and this is when they are most vulnerable from water users. There are also the UK’s incredible seabird colonies of kittiwakes, gannets, northern fulmars and Manx shearwaters, to name just a few, in key locations such as St. Kilda and Skomer Island.
In February a humpback whale was spotted off the shore near Brixham causing crowds to gather. The clear advice was for people not to take to the water for their own safety as much as the wellbeing of the whale. The interest in large (and small) creatures in the wild is understandable but they are just that, wild. You probably would not try to get too close to a wild elephant or hippopotamus, but the gentle nature of these ocean creatures does not make them any less dangerous, or for that matter any less apprehensive of, and troubled by, our presence if we get too close. Keep steady, slow and predictable when passing seals
WILDLIFE GUIDE FOR BOATERS
The recently launched Green Wildlife Guide for Boaters is the latest addition to The Green Blue’s suite of handy leaflets, and it is designed specifically to advise boaters on how to get the best experience out of their wildlife encounters by acting responsibly and cautiously to minimise the risk of disturbance while keeping participants and their boats safe. With striking and subtle illustrations created by Pete Galvin, the key message to boaters who find themselves close to marine wildlife is to think speed, and be steady, predictable, quiet and cautious. And this is the rule of thumb whether you spot something in the distance, something pops up on the port side, you use a smaller craft that can reach shallower depths or your passage takes you by seals hauled out on rocks or colonies of roosting birds on the cliff edge.
TAKE CARE AROUND WILDLIFE
Do not outstay your welcome if you take a moment to enjoy the experience, do not chase or follow to get a better view and think about what might be above, alongside and underneath your boat. Disturbance can be caused by noise, proximity, wake and erratic movement, and most marine species are protected by legislation that makes deliberate disturbance an offence.
A joint Initiative Illustrations Courtesy of Pete Galvin
Taking care around marine wildlife is as much about looking after you, your crew and your boat as care for the animal itself. Keeping steady, slow, predictable and ultimately respectful of the environment might even mean you to get to see a little more this season. SIMON’S TOWN
Whether used for exploring, trading or battle, the oceans and seas around the world have many stories to tell, as do the coastlines alongside them. It should not be forgotten that the harbour at Simon’s Town is inextricably linked to the exploration of Antarctica, a role that the port still continues through to today
A tangible link to the presence of the Royal Navy at Simon’s Town can be seen in the very well maintained grave of William Froude, who did so much work to improve the stability of the new breed of ironclad warships. In an upcoming article, Dougal’s Dairy will be taking a longer look at the life of this master of Victorian mathematics, a man whose calculations remain in use through to today
With high ground to the west giving protection and the lush nature of the Cape, Simon’s Town was an important stopping point on the route to the East - and was wanted by all the main Empire builders
T
oday we glibly talk of ‘globalisation’ as if it is a product of the modern world, but the truth is that international trading is almost as old as mankind itself. Certainly, once the early humans had gained a degree of mastery over the seas, maritime trading started to shrink the globe. However, for the dominant European nations the route east, towards the fabled riches of the Orient, were fraught with the dangers of the Arabian deserts to the east of the Mediterranean. Then, in 1488, the great Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias sailed far Although peaceful now, Simon’s Town played an important part in both the World Wars
enough down the coast of Africa that he was able to turn from his southerly track and start heading east. With some justification, Dias named the area Cabo das Tormentas, the Cape of Storms. With swirling tides, unpredictable weather and a fang like rocky shore, the Cape would prove to be the last resting place of many ships and sailors who would follow in the footsteps of Dias, as the sea route to the east rapidly opened up. From the seaways in the Atlantic, the routes westward were guarded by the terrors of Cape Horn, which made the easterly passage around the tip
of South Africa the preferred route to India and Australia, although the Cape itself is not the most southerly point of Africa; that honour goes to Cape Agulhas, just over 100 sea miles to the southeast. Between these two headlands rests the more sheltered waters of False Bay, a massive bite sized shape taken out of the south of the cape. After the long haul southwards along the western seaboard of Africa, aptly named the Skeleton Coast, harbours are virtually non-existent, so although False Bay would hardly be described as sheltered, it was the best location for fresh water and re-victualling.
would ultimately prove decisive and on 15 September 1975 the Dutch governor bowed to the inevitable and surrendered the Cape Colony to the British forces. Work commenced immediately to improve the coastal defences of Simon’s Town with the construction of the first Martello Tower, a fortification that would become the model for those in the UK during the Napoleonic Wars. Seven years later, Britain and France ended their hostilities and with the signing of the Treaty of Amiens, the Cape was returned to the puppet Batavian Republic. Europe was still in a state of ferment though and the fragile peace lasted just 14 months before war again broke out. A second expeditionary force was dispatched from England, arriving at Cape Town on Christmas Eve 1805, but they brought with them little in the way of festive cheer. This time a proper battle would be fought before, by the second week of January, the colony was surrendered for a second time. IMPORTANT SOUTERN BASE Simon’s Town would now become one of the Royal Navy’s main bases in the Southern Hemisphere and by 1815 purpose built buildings were being constructed for mast and sail making.
“The work was completed in time for the Simon’s Town base to play an important role in both the coming world war and again in the Second World War.” There was a small harbour, which in time would be extended by a breakwater comprising massive slabs of stone quarried in the hills of the Cape. As the port took on more of an identity it became known as Simon’s Town (or Simonstown) named after Simon van der Stel, an early Governor of the Cape. However van der Stel was Dutch, for that other great naval empire building nation had beaten England to the prize of occupying the Cape. BRITISH SEA POWER The strategic importance of the Cape, and the base at Simon’s Town, gained a new importance when, following the French Revolution, England found itself at war again with the old enemy just across the Channel. Even in the 1790s, war was becoming a global enterprise, with French privateers, operating from Mauritius, threatening the British trade routes operating in the Indian Ocean. Trafalgar was still a decade off, but British sea power was already the dominant factor and in 1795 two Battle Squadrons were sent south with orders to take the Cape. What happened next was little more than an extended period of skirmishing, but the Royal Navy’s ability to project power, which included a blockade of Cape Town,
The latter would still be important, even though for the next half century the base would have to be transformed to accommodate the change from sail to steam. Simon’s Town became an important coaling station, but as the ships grew ever bigger and more complex, the docks would be expanded further. As the 20th century dawned work commenced to create an even bigger harbour, sheltered by nearly a kilometre of new breakwater. A large dry dock was also constructed, along with all the workshop facilities needed by a modern navy. The work was completed in time for the Simon’s Town base to play an important role in both the coming world war and again in the Second World War. With the return of peace, the UK’s ability to maintain major stations overseas was reduced, and in 1957 the harbour and all facilities were finally transferred to the South African Navy. Today, Simon’s Town, having undergone yet another period of expansion in the 1970s, is the home of the South African Navy and the base for their frigate and submarine fleets. But for the visitor, the influence of the Royal Navy’s previous occupation are still clearly visible from the Martello Tower to the wonderfully appointed Navy Museum, housed in a building that has the authentic feel that it was British to the foundations.

A severe scolding or reprimand. The expression dates from the late 1660s; Jane Austin wrote:“I will give him such a dressing.” On ships the term dressing down means to dress or apply an oil preservative to the rigging. It was an unpleasant, sometimes dangerous job and might have been given in punishment.

FAMILY AFFAIR
CHRIS WARWICK, PRINCIPAL AT UNIVERSAL YACHTING, LOOKS AT HOW FAMILIES CAN MOVE UP FROM DINGHIES TO YACHT SAILING.

F
or many families involved with dinghy sailing it is a natural aspiration to do some yacht sailing, such as a flotilla holiday. Skippering and managing a yacht is a step up that can present its challenges as well as its joys, so making the transition needs to be considered within the dynamics of each individual family. Sailing can, and will, expose both the weaknesses and the strengths of any group or family unit. So it is important to recognise how your family interacts at home, and not expect them to be any different on the water.
THE RIGHT LEARNING STYLE
If one person has a good level of sailing experience and the natural dynamics of the family support that person as the leader, it normally works well for that person to get additional training to feel comfortable in a range of conditions and to act as a confident skipper. Some families lead by mutual consensus, talking things through first to work out what they are doing. In this instance, learning as a family group has its advantages. It allows everyone to work out what each person is good at and establish the group dynamics with an instructor’s guidance. It helps to feel confident in their role and have trust in each other when the instructor is not there. Starting at the same level means everyone learns together, builds up experience and grows in confidence together, creating
a more harmonious unit. Some people are happier to learn separately, so that they feel less intimidated by others who may have more experience. However separate teaching can lead to scenarios under stress where one person says: “Well I was taught to do it like this!” It is important to understand how the family works, and also be honest with yourself about your ability levels. Problems can arise when one person professes to know how to sail and everyone else follows along blindly. The so called expert can be exposed if things do not go according to plan, leading to a breakdown and loss of confidence in the skipper. It is a tough position to come back from as others start to chip in with their own opinions and undermine further decisions.
A training course is a great way for all the family to get involved
STARTING AS NOVICES
If you are keen to take your family yachting, and no one has ever sailed before, the best way to start is to just try a day or one night on board. This may be with friends, or many training centres offer a taster session. Although some schools might suggest it, do not be tempted to jump into a five-day course with all the family. It will be too much too soon. Better to make sure it is something everyone wants to have a go at and then invest in getting training. On a taster course, your skipper will run through all the basics, explain
Give the youngsters responsibilities too
everything and balance the day or weekend so that everyone comes away with a positive and hopefully enjoyable experience. If everyone in the family is happy, use this as a building block to move on to further training either individually or as a group. It is important the kids stay engaged and enjoy it. Do not expect to be out on the water for hours. Keep it short and mix up the activities so everyone is involved and doing different things. Arriving in a new port or anchorage, and the novelties of living and cooking on board is as much part of the experience as the sailing.
Taking some training before you go on a sailing holiday will help to relax everyone, as you will know what to expect. It also means you can make the most of the whole holiday and not have the initial few days taken up with basic training. Sailing is a great leveller, so do not imagine that just because life runs one way at home that it will be the same on a boat. It is definitely worth leaving egos at home and accepting that on a boat you are all equal. Allow others, especially your children, to take the lead and you will often be surprised.

Children will love spending time in the water
ENSURE EVERYONE HAS FUN
IAN, WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT TAKING YOUR FAMILY ON A YACHT SAILING HOLIDAY? We tend to take activity holidays, usually in the UK, and at that time our children had never experienced a warm holiday. Having dinghy sailed for several years and gained confidence on the water, we were invited to join four families in Greece on a flotilla holiday. The warm weather, clear water and challenge of using some of our dinghy skills and stepping up to yacht sailing was appealing. For Sian, my wife, an added appeal was the lovely mix of family time on board the boat during the day and time with friends, new and old, when anchored at lunchtime and evenings. The children were excited about going somewhere warm and were also keen to try Greek food. Our eldest, who was 13 on our first trip, was certainly interested in learning how to sail a yacht, having loved dinghy sailing from the age of five. HOW DID YOU SET ABOUT PLANNING FOR IT? Initially we considered at least one of us completing the Day Skipper qualification, but the logistics and time commitment were restrictive. After reading the flotilla’s website we realised it was sufficient to complete the International Certificate of Competency. We approached Chris Warwick at Universal Yachting, who advised that the RYA Start Yachting Course would be an ideal introduction for the family. Despite doing the course in February, in the freezing snow, we had a brilliant weekend and all gained enough knowledge and skills to be confident on our flotilla. As a family, I was nominated as skipper. In order to gain extra experience, especially in close manoeuvring, I arranged several evening trips with generous friends around Chichester Harbour. Gaining confidence in these skills was invaluable for the holiday and certainly reduced the natural stress of steering a yacht at close quarters.
I also spent a couple of hours with a friend revising navigation skills, although it was perhaps unnecessary as our route was all line of sight sailing, However it did enhance my enjoyment of the holiday. We also encouraged our children to practice knots, so they were all able to safely tie on a fender. WHAT WERE THE BEST BITS FOR THE CHILDREN? The children were desperate to repeat the holiday. The highlights for them were: Leaping off the yacht into warm, clear water, sometimes from a swing rigged off the boom Finding safe rocks, with deep water, to jump off Meeting up with and making new friends, who they still keep in touch with and see four years down the line Snorkelling - we took our own kit as we had been advised those provided can sometimes be a bit worn Evenings out in Greek tavernas and cocktail bars with a group of over 20 friends Having the chance to take the helm with confidence and do other useful roles on board
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER PARENTS SEEKING TO DO THE SAME THING? Definitely train as a family and give everyone a role whilst on board and swap these around during the holiday. It is important to involve everyone in the navigation to some extent, depending on age. Produce a laminated safety check list. We took turns to go through this each day prior to setting sail. We also marked the relevant sheets, halyards, winches and so on with self-adhesive labels. This caused much ridicule from our jealous friends, but was invaluable when at sea. In addition reefing the sail early to avoid being overpowered, as this can be frightening for all. Overall, it is crucial that the skipper has sufficient confidence to sail in the expected conditions, so that the holiday is enjoyable for all.
It is important to have a clear idea what your family all want from the voyage. If you really want a boys’ weekend blasting in a Force 8 then go with the boys and not with the family - especially if you expect them to come back for more. Set realistic plans, without massive expectations on the sailing aspects. No one will appreciate an overly ambitious agenda keeping everyone out on the water all day for hours. There is as much, if not more, fun to be had in port or at an anchorage. Sail within the limits of the weakest member and remember ‘less is often more’. Getting the balance right is key and if this means less sailing and more time motoring or in a port to ensure that the family unit enjoys the experience, then so be it.
KEEPING THE CREW HAPPY
At the beginning of the holiday/voyage go through various safety aspects, making sure people are comfortable where things are and how things work. n Keep the boat flat - generally the biggest fear is heeling over. n Reduce sail size and keep everything calm and manageable n If it is too windy stay put, motor or just use the jib if the situation allows it.
n Involve everyone in the responsibility of the running of the boat n Give people things to do and clear roles As the holiday goes on, talk through how to do things before you actually do it, rather than shouting at people after or during a manoeuvre. Accept that there is more than one way of doing things. Providing you get the end result, such as landing, you can refine details later. Remember that when sailing things rarely go exactly to plan and so you have to adapt and think on your feet. Always sail the boat well with the limits of the least confident sailor, this way everyone will enjoy it.
PREPARATION TIPS TO ENSURE A FUN HOLIDAY
n Read sailing skills books or watch videos together online n Talk about it as a family and ask each other questions to help remember the key basics n Be sure to pack practical footwear and wind-proofs as well as bathers and suncream n Practice your knots - make it a game n Check the charts where you will be sailing and work out together where you wish to go
“Definitely train as a family and give everyone a role whilst on board and swap these around during the holiday.”

EXPERTS’ FORUM
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
SIMPLE STEPS TO MAXIMISE PERFORMANCE ON YOUR BOAT
ROB LYNE, SALES AND MARKETING MANAGER AT BARTON MARINE, PROVIDES A NUMBER OF SOLUTIONS TO HELP YOUR CREW WORK TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY. MAXIMISING efficiency on your boat is important, especially when navigating solo or sailing with novices or young crew. There are many simple steps you can take as skipper to ensure you and your crew can perform at their best – whether they are experienced or not. One of the easiest and safest options when navigating alone or in foul weather
is controlling the boat from the cockpit. This means you do not have to be out on deck sorting the sails, enabling you to stay safe in the cockpit watching ahead for upcoming waves and weather. It is easy to set up cockpit controls on most boats. Moving from the bow backwards, the foresail sheets can be led back to the cockpit by lines running through jib cars on each side and on to a winch for control purposes. This system is important to ensure you can get the sail up and down easily and quickly to cope with whatever sea or wind conditions you are dealt. Having the right foresail furler that will work every time without snagging is critical. Modern furlers are designed to include a three-point line retaining feature, helping to keep the line on the drum for smooth and snag-free running. A multi-position option for the furling line exit provides additional flexibility for boaters to reduce wear and chafing, and ensure quick and snag-free furling. This allows boaters to change the size of the sail with ease, and removes the need to take the sail down at the end of the day. Furler costs start at £51.39.
Having a furling main also makes singlehanded controls very easy. Do not forget, though, if you have a furling main, you will need an extra halyard. However it is helpful to have the extra halyard for maintenance as well, as it provides a spare for cruising. KEEPING IN CONTROL On most boats with a standard mainsail, it is quick and simple to upgrade mainsail reefing with lazy jacks and standard reefing kits. This allows you to reef from the cockpit, and to reduce the sail size or drop it completely in a controlled way. These cost in the region of £120 for the lazy jacks and £120 for a reefing kit. Having the right foresail furler that will work every time without snagging is critical
The boomstrut extended and compressed
Controlling the boom when reefing or lowering the mainsail is essential, and a swinging boom, especially in heavy winds or large waves, is very dangerous. The boom will tend to drop into the cockpit when you lower the sail. An ideal solution for keeping the boom in place and stable is the Barton Marine Boomstrut, which reduces the risk of accidents and damage on board – for both crew and the boat. The maintenance free design eliminates friction and sliding parts whilst delivering improved performance alongside reduced weight and wind resistance. It can be fitted in conjunction with existing boat hardware, mounting independently inside the existing kicking strap tackle with no need for drilling. The Barton Marine Boomstrut starts at £132.66. The mainsheet traveller is often an afterthought, or is forgotten altogether, because
often sailors do not see the benefits of this piece of kit. Barton Marine’s solution is to install its removable mainsheet traveller, which means when at anchor, or in your berth, you can remove it completely so that your cockpit is clear for eating or entertaining. Prices start at £400. SIMPLE AND ORGANISED Whatever your reason for wanting to maximise efficiency, whether it is simplifying your boat controls or wanting an easier life on board, it is important to keep things simple and organised. One final tip – fit deck organisers on board in the right positions for your control lines. This ensures your lines always run smoothly, aligned with the clutches and it is easy to identify which line is which with clear markings. And then everyone can enjoy sailing with no hassle on board. www.bartonmarine.com

GETTING KIDS AFLOAT IF YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT SAILING AND HAVE CHILDREN, IT IS NICE TO THINK THAT THEY WILL SHARE THE PASSION TOO. CHARLOTTE GOODBY LOOKS AT HOW TO GET KIDS INTO SAILING, AND WHAT THEY WILL GET OUT OF IT.
I
t can seem a daunting task - what age to begin, where to go, how to do it, who should teach them… This list goes on, but the most important thing is, how to make it enjoyable, so that they want to sail. In the UK, there are many clubs located up and down the country that offer expert tuition and guidance for complete beginners, from small boats and dinghy sailing to bigger yachts and competitive sailing. The possibilities on the water are endless and as a sport sailing has the ability to take your youngsters to all corners of the world. A common misconception is that children only start sailing if a parent or relative sails. Whilst this is true in some cases, it does not mean that the activity is strictly off limits for those who have never been on the water before. Sailing schools pride themselves on accessibility and welcome children of all abilities, generally starting aged eight. There are taster sessions where those
interested are welcome to have a go and “dip their toe in the water” to see if it is for them. There is no right age to start, right or wrong method, but as long as your child is eager to learn and enjoys their tuition, then letting them develop at their own pace is paramount. Sailing is a sociable and fun way for kids to enjoy their time on the water, whilst making new friends, learning new skills, becoming independent, self-reliant and, hopefully, developing a passion for life.
Most importantly, sailing in the warmer months showcases the sport at its best. Beautiful warm weather and calm waters create the ideal relaxed environment for children to have a go at sailing at their leisure, learn new skills, make friends and, hopefully, whet their appetites.
LEARN WITH THE RYA
The Royal Yachting Association is the UK’s national governing body with over 1,100 centres located throughout the UK and more around the world. It provides expert tuition for all abilities with various programmes and taster sessions at RYA recognised training centres and clubs.
GOOD BOATS FOR KIDS
There are a couple of boat options for kids starting out: n Optimist – single-handed boat n RS Feva – two/three people on the boat n Mirror – two people on the boat n Cadet – two people on the boat
LEARN ON HOLIDAY
One of the nicest ways to start is a holiday in the sun. There are plenty of companies that offer the option to charter a boat with a full crew, where children are able to witness sailing first hand in exotic destinations. You could also choose to charter bareboat, where the parents are in charge and can share the roles with their children.

ALL AT SEA APRIL 2017 British Sailing committee is chaired by Alice Driscoll, who has sailed since she was five-years-old. Commenting on her children’s progression into sailing, she said: “My husband and I have sailed all our lives and obviously loved the idea of sharing our passion with our children Libby, 19, and Will, 16. For us, it was really important that they enjoyed their time on the water, without us pushing them. “It was key for us to make it fun and to have an enjoyable day out.
What could be more fun than an afternoon spent afloat with family and friends…
The RYA Youth Sailing Scheme is typically the most traditional pathway to follow, which consists of two-day courses to complete each of the four stages. The scheme provides invaluable experience on the water, giving children the opportunity to flourish under skilled instruction. Another initiative is the RYA OnBoard program, which introduces children to sailing and windsurfing and has seen half a million children participate since the scheme started in 2005. The programme partners with local youth organisations or schools, opening up access to the sport and securing the long-term future of sailing and windsurfing. Similarly, if you are keen to get the whole family involved, RYA’s Push the Boat Out is a national week that invites families to enjoy taster sessions at local RYA centres and water sport clubs. Running this year from 13 - 21 May, details
of all the Push The Boat Out events can be found on the RYA website.
CHILDREN’S WELL-BEING
THE NEXT LEVEL
When talent is identified at a young age, there are a number of opportunities to nurture individuals for future prospects, whether that be the Olympics or round the world racing. Sunsail, for example, launched a competition for sailing and yacht clubs across the UK to win £5,000 to invest in their sailors, recognising the need to invest at a grassroots level, as part of it is Funding the Future campaign last year.
MAKE IT FUN
The trade association for the marine industry, British Marine, is keen to help increase watersports participation through families and young people. Its
passion for the sport quickly and has since won races at Enterprise National Championships, crewing for world class helms. Libby passed her dinghy instructor course to enable her to spend her summers teaching at local sailing clubs including Sutton Bingham and Bristol Corinthians. Will also enjoys helming and crewing in a variety of boats from Scorpions to J24s, but also loves windsurfing and stand-up paddle boarding, and has passed his dinghy instructor course this year. Alice said: “I can see how sailing has developed my children’s personalities, and it is one of the few sports where young people participate against people of all ages, on the same course, at the same time. I think it does a lot for their health, emotional wellbeing and self-confidence.”
Children will make new friends and learn new skills while sailing
Our experience started with the kids crewing in our Enterprise dinghies. We would always go out sailing with lots of treats and race against each other, and the most important part was that when they had had enough, we went in.” Alice says it is important to listen to your children and do what they want to do, otherwise the fun disappears. Her daughter, Libby, developed a
Well-being in children is a highly discussed subject and it is important to recognise how we can support this in the younger generation. Studies show blue spaces, such as open water, have a profound effect on well-being. Dr Stewart Cotterill and Dr Hazel Brown from the Department of Sport and Exercise, University of Winchester, copyrighted by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, conducted a report called ‘An exploration into the perceived benefits of regular recreational dinghy sailing for young people aged 9-13’. The report postulated that: “Physical activity undertaken on water may have greater potential to contribute to health and well-being than physical activity undertaken on land.” Another great reason to get kids
outside and enjoying sailing, which in turn benefits their physical and mental well-being.
ALTERNATIVE AVENUES
For children who are not introduced to sailing through their parents or relatives, there are other options to pursue. The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation uses the sailing environment to promote health and well-being, all whilst developing personal skills that will improve a young person’s life. Sailing as a sport and as a recreational activity is not always accessible due to lack of finances, a physical or learning disability, mental health or social barriers. The Foundation helps to break down those barriers by working with sailing providers to offer financial and practical support. Similarly, UKSA, a young people’s charity foundation, uses sailing as an outlet for disadvantaged children in Cowes, equipping young people with new work skills and life skills that start at sea. Ultimately, there are plenty of ways to get your child onto the water and to make sure they have an enjoyable time as well. The UK is fortunate to have a great foundation of centres and teachers that provide a high level of instruction and valuable expertise, all whilst sharing the same passion for sailing.

WHICH ROPE? In 2015 Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendee Globe one day. In this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenge these men and women face. This month Lizzy looks at the use of ropes on board. High-performance yachts and dinghies use rope cores made from various aramid fibres - Dyneema, Vectran and PBO (Zylon) - for halyards, sheets, running and standing rigging. These fibres are very strong with minimal stretch, maintaining sail and rig settings over a wide range of wind speeds and sea states. Dyneema is the most commonly used aramid fibre as it is very strong and light with low creep and has good UV resistance. It is available in four blends: SK78, SK99, SK38 and DM20. SK78 and SK99 are the two most commonly used for halyards, strops, lashings, purchase systems and backstays. SK38 is the stretchiest and cheapest Dyneema available, and is best suited as a general purpose core for sailors looking to upgrade from polyester ropes. On the other end of the scale, DM20 dyneema is the firmest on the market with zero creep, and is ideally suited for use as standing rigging and steering lines. Dyneema must always be covered in ‘hot spot’ areas such as turning

blocks and halyard sheaves, as it has a low resistance to heat. Vectran offers the best creep performance of any synthetic fibre and is more heat resistant than Dyneema. It can be used for halyards, steering systems and strops but must be covered with a protective coating as it is extremely susceptible to UV light. PBO (Zylon) has unrivalled strength to diameter performance and can be

used to replace stainless steel rigging. Care must be taken to professionally maintain PBO as it is very susceptible to UV degradation.
THE RIGHT COVER
Covers are added to a rope’s core to increase abrasion resistance, load holding capacity, winch easing and handling comfort. Covers are typically made from polyester and blended with either Technora, PBO or Vectran. Other options include a PBO/Technora blend, Dyneema/ polypropylene blend and Dyneema/ Technora blend. Technora blends are the best choice for sheets and inshore racing halyards; they have a good heat/abrasion resistance with a great grip to winch easing balance. PBO blends are ideal for high load and high temperature applications such as runners, gennaker sheets and high load mainsheets. Vectran blends are typically favoured by single-handed sailors as they have good winch easing properties and great general use, while Dyneema blends produce lighter rope covers which soak up less water; ideal for lightweight sheets and halyards. Alongside being able to choose the blend of the rope’s cover, you can also

pick between 12, 24, 32 or 48 plait rope. A 12 plait rope will be very flexible and easy to splice, while a 48 plait rope will be stiff with an outstanding resistance to abrasion, making it a good choice as a chafe cover.
UNCOVERED ROPES
If you decide to leave certain ropes uncovered for weight saving reasons, consider protecting them with an appropriate coating such as Polyurethane emulsion (increases abrasion resistance), silicon (reduces friction), hydrophobic coatings (reduces water uptake) or a tacky selfhealing coating (improves core-cover adhesion, reduces particle ingress). Uncovered ropes are smaller in diameter than covered ropes and can be held in place by ‘constrictors’

rather than clutches and cleats, offering further weight saving advantages. On board you should always store your ropes in a figure of eight fashion to avoid kinks and twists, while soaking ropes in fresh water after sailing will help to remove abrasive salt crystals. Storing ropes away from grit, dirt, sunlight and water will prolong the fibres of the rope. Finally, always check your deck gear is compatible with the diameter of your new rope. Lizzyracing.com This year Lizzy is one of six sailors selected to train on board Whitecap’s Artemis 60 as part of the Vendee2020Project. Lizzy is also racing with Team Jolokia, a french team based in France, on board a Volvo 60.

SETTING GOALS British Sailing Team and Rio gold medallist Hannah Mills has some great tips on goal setting and how to go about achieving your aims, one bite at a time… T
HE
Masterc lass
A discussion with someone always helps. Image: Nick Dempsey Photography
THERE are only so many hours in the day, there are so many pulls on your time and there is always a huge ‘to-do’ list. The same is certainly true for a sailing campaign. Planning and goal-setting are vital in shaping priorities and making sure that your efforts, time and money are being spent where the biggest opportunities for improvements are. Your first task towards achieving any goal is establishing what that goal is. Olympic gold medallist Hannah Mills points out: “It is a very broad thing to say ‘I just want to be better’. It is really hard to set a goal for that, so you need to be really specific about what you want to achieve. The more specific you can be the more you will get out of it.”
BE SMART
Try to be SMART when considering what your goals should be (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-limited). This approach is just as applicable to sailing as it is to business or any other target you want to achieve. British Sailing Team athletes and coaches often talk about ‘outcome’ or ‘process’ goals. The outcome goal is usually your ultimate results-based target – top three, top ten, top 20, gold fleet at a stated event, for example. Process goals are generally smaller, more skills-based objectives which form the foundations of your training and help plot the journey to where you would like to be. Once you have established your own outcome goal for
the season, the next steps are to write down the different components and areas which you think will be important in getting there – your process goals. Hannah explains: “We broke our list for Rio down into different areas such as boat-handling, boat speed, psychology, fitness and health and race execution. Those were our five big areas and then we had smaller goals off each of them – so we had about 20 - 25 mini goals which we needed to try and achieve by Rio.” While most sailors are not planning an Olympic gold medal-winning campaign, the approach can still be the same. You can then begin to shape your training programme around the key areas you have identified as your ‘processes’, perhaps looking at what others with similar goals have done to achieve them, the timescales required, what experiences and resources you can already draw upon or what else you need to help you.
PLOT YOUR PROGRESS
Once you have set out your plan, it is important to chart your progress on a regular basis, to be realistic about where you are now and what you have achieved from your training and approach so far, and how. Elite level athletes can usually call upon a coach, fitness experts and so on to help with that impartial ‘checking in’ process, but if you do not have a coach then a third party sounding board can be useful. Hannah explains: “A discussion with someone always helps – a coach, parent, mentor, crew or even fellow competitors, who might have a different opinion of your skills and areas for improvement.
Remember to review your plan after your outcome event or at the end of the season. Image: Nick Dempsey Photography
“If you try to do it all on your own it can become quite one-dimensional. You may start to become over-critical on areas where you are actually not that bad, or you may also not have a bigger enough overview of where your priorities need to be.”
STAYING ON COURSE
Are you on track with where you hoped to be and making progress against your process goals? If yes, then great. If not, do not panic! Even the most carefully laid out plans sometimes have a few curve balls come their way: injury, illness or other life priorities.
Take a look again at the plan you set out and the time you have left. Is there still time and opportunity to get everything done? Does your initial approach need to be adapted or do you need to re-evaluate and reprioritise some of the work-on areas ahead of your outcome event or the timescales you set out. Remember to review your plan after your outcome event or at the end of the season – what you achieved, how you went about it and where there is still room for improvement – as this will help shape your goals for next season’s sailing and keep you progressing.

BUCKET CADDY
Most boat owners store their supplies inside the bucket they use for cleaning. The problem is, when it is time to fill it with water, all the bottles and tools have to come out. The Bucket Caddy organises it all and fits inside a 13 or 20L bucket. The Bucket Caddy has a handle for pulling it out and moving around while working on the deck or dock. A perforated bottom lets water pass through and allows tools and supplies to dry. £49 sales@meridianzero.co.uk

SHORE STYLE KIT FOR YOUNGER SAILORS REVIEWED
CHATHAM BOAT SHOES
Why should it just be the adults that have boat shoes? Chatham have a great range of unisex footwear designed for the younger boaters in the family. Some have laces while, for ease or those still mastering laces, there are also Velcro shoes. As well as traditional browns and navy colours there are some fun splashes of colour, like those on the Oliver Velcro boat shoes and Henry deck shoes we have asked some younger sailors to try out. Our female tester, Isabelle, has been putting a pair of stone/pink Henry deck shoes to the test. Although she liked the pink detail on the sole, she was not so keen on the stone colour. However, the pink laces were definitely a hit. Running around out in the rain the non slip
sole did its job, and the tester gave the comfort a thumbs up. Isabelle said: “The pink is really nice and they are comfy.” The Oliver shoes, a younger version of the Henry, come in a choice of three colourways and our tester had the striking navy and yellow, which he absolutely loved, being a fan of bright colours. He also found them very comfortable and easy to put on. Not just for boating, the tester, Dylan, will be wearing them out and about throughout the summer. Dylan said: “I love the colours and I can wear them all the time.” From an adult’s perspective both pairs of shoes look good and, made from nubuck leather, will be hard wearing. The price is very reasonable too for a pair of quality shoes. £45 www.chatham.co.uk

NEW BELLA 485R
The Land Rover BAR Replica Junior Cap is constructed from 100 per cent cotton drill and features the team logos on the front. The cap design offers an adjustable fit via a back slider adjuster and has a precurved peak.
There is an extensive range of jackets for children from Helly Hansen from a Parka for winter to sailing jackets. Most come in a choice of colours, and so there should be something to suit everyone’s taste. With prices starting from just £35 they are affordable too. Our testers have been putting the Daybreaker fleece jacket and Salt Jacket through their paces. The Polartec® fleece is ideal as a second layer on colder days or as a light jacket on its own. It is simple with a front zip and Helly Hansen logo on the chest, and is, according to the tester, very cosy and comfortable. She also loved the blue tint colour although there are five other colour choices.

HENRI LLOYD LAND ROVER BAR JERSEY T
Our tester, Isabelle, summed it up as: “My favourite colour and it keeps me nice and cosy.” Our favourite Helly Hansen kids’ jacket has to be the super stylish Salt Jacket, which is available in three colours and has a detachable hood. It is the children’s version of one of Helly’s most popular sailing jackets and it is easy to see why. Not only does it look good, but its quick-dry, lightweight lining is comfy in the warm and cold. We liked the 360-degree reflectivity and SOLAS reflective tape for added safety, and the tester especially liked the zip side pockets and inside pocket. Not just a sailing jacket, our tester, Dylan, was happy to wear it everyday: “I love wearing a proper sailing jacket like grown ups.” Salt jacket: £145 / Daybreaker fleece: £35 www.hellyhansen.com

WIN A YEAR’S SUPPLY OF GOSLINGS BLACK SEAL RUM THE OFFICIAL RUM OF THE 35TH AMERICA’S CUP
T
his summer sees Bermuda host the 35th America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in international sport. The beautiful island is famed for many things including pink sandy beaches, Bermuda shorts and, of course, Goslings Rum – the official rum and official ginger beer of the 35th America’s Cup, which starts on 26 May and leads up to the final race on 25 June. Bermudian’s use Goslings Rum in a number of ways, including roof wetting ceremonies to celebrate a new house being built, but the best way to enjoy the Bermudian rum is in a Dark ‘n Stormy® – affectionately known as the official drink of Bermuda. The Goslings family first set foot upon the shores of Bermuda in 1806, and since then they have been doing what they do best, making award-winning rums. Rumour has it the Dark ‘n Stormy was born in the ginger beer factory that was run as a subsidiary of the Royal Officer’s Club. The sailors discovered that a splash of the local Gosling’s Black Seal Rum made ginger beer a lot tastier! The name apparently originated when an old salt held up his glass, looked through the liquid and noticed that the drink was “the colour of a cloud that only a fool or a dead man would sail under”. From that day onward the drink was born, and much enjoyed. Decades later, the drink is still associated with sailing and the sea.
We have a year’s supply of Goslings Black Seal Rum, a case of Goslings Ginger Beer, two caps, a light sailing jacket, t-shirt, bottle bag, two keyrings and a sunglasses holder to give away courtesy of Goslings Rum. A bottling plant in the 1920s
Image: Roman
Rum and Ginger Beer are the two ingredients you need to make a Dark ‘n Stormy® right? Well, almost. In fact, the two ingredients you actually need to make a Dark ‘n Stormy, one of the few trademarked drinks, is Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and ginger beer. Now that is a Dark ‘n Stormy! Anything else is a fake ‘n phony. Making the Dark ‘n Stormy is pretty easy. Available to buy in selected Waitrose stores, all you need is Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, ginger beer (ideally Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer) and a squeeze of lime.
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE IT:
Take a Collins glass or a highball and fill with cubed ice. Add 75ml of Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer and add 50ml of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum so that it floats on top of the ginger beer. Add a squeeze of lime if you like and enjoy. BOAT BUYING PITFALLS Whether you are buying a brand new motor cruiser or a second hand dinghy, potential pitfalls apply. So how do you stop your heart ruling your head when purchasing a boat to avoid making an expensive mistake? Emma Slater, RYA PR & Press Officer any collision history, repair work that has been undertaken, engine service information and anything that is going to help provide you with peace of mind.” Commission a surveyor, one affiliated to a professional body thus carrying professional indemnity insurance, to do a report on the boat. Surveyors do not generally include engines, so a separate engineer’s report is a good idea too. Until recently a buyer could, under the terms of a standard sales agreement, pull out of or renegotiate a sale if a surveyor found what was defined as a ‘material defect’. However the RYA has removed this term from the standard sales agreement they offer to their members, and buyers using this contract can reject or renegotiate on a survey’s findings.
The seller will normally want a deposit paid as security for the sale and against any possible damage arising from the survey and/or sea-trial
Y
ou have decided on a model, spotted a boat for sale you like and are ready to declare your interest in buying it. But amidst all the excitement of what might be about to lie ahead, do not let your common sense alarm bells get drowned out by the intoxicating prospect of sitting at the helm of your new boat and cruising off into the sunset. Buying a boat is up there with a house or car in terms of emotive pull. But it can prove a costly transaction, financially and emotionally, if you do not protect yourself. “It does not matter if you are buying a new boat, built bespoke or from stock, or a second hand boat privately or through a broker, there are certain rights and expectations every potential buyer has,” explains Mandy Peters, RYA Legal Advisor. “Making sure those rights and expectations are satisfied fully before any unredeemable financial outlay is made is crucial if you do not want to end up with something that, at best, you cannot sell on or, at worst, is actually dangerous or you cannot use yourself.”
BUYER BEWARE
While someone buying new is covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, private buyers do not have the same legal protection.
BACKGROUND CHECKS
As well as reassurance on the physical state of the boat, one of the earliest things buyers need to establish is that the person selling the boat actually owns it. Unlike with cars there is not a compulsory legal registration system tracking ownership. Registration is not
compulsory in the UK and many boats are not registered. Buyers also need to ascertain there are no outstanding loans or mortgages secured on the boat or this could leave you liable for someone else’s debt later. As part of the initial sales agreement, obtain a written undertaking from the seller that the boat is not subject to any encumbrances, debts, liens, charges etc.
WHERE CAN I GET HELP?
RYA members get free legal advice and this includes access to a Sale and Purchase pack providing a step-by-step guide to the many different and complex aspects of buying and selling a second hand boat. This pack includes the RYA Agreement for the Sale and Purchase of a Second Hand Boat template, as well as advice on VAT, Recreational Craft Directive and syndicate ownership. There is plenty of information and guidance for buying through brokers or new too. “The vast majority of boat purchases go through smoothly, but if and when disputes do arise you have to make sure you do not get stung,” Mandy concludes. “Buying a boat should be the start of an exciting journey, so letting your head rule your heart and using your common sense can remove a lot of unnecessary stress.” Find out how the RYA can help you when buying a boat, including with insurance, at www.rya.org.uk. While someone buying new is covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, private buyers do not have the same legal protection
THE DEPOSIT
One of the earliest things buyers need to establish is that the person selling the boat actually owns it
For private sales the common law rule of Caveat Emptor – let the buyer beware – applies. This means you buy what you see and redress against the seller is limited if you later discover things are not as they seemed. Importantly the onus is on the buyer to investigate, not on the seller to voluntarily disclose. However if you ask a question, sellers are obliged to provide accurate answers or face potential consequences down the line. “Insist on seeing the boat and, if possible, meet the seller or at least the broker if one is involved,” Mandy continues. “Beforehand put together a list of pertinent questions you want answered. These could include the condition of the boat, the type of use it has had,

“When it comes to boat sales we get a great number of enquiries about deposits,” reveals Mandy. “It all comes down to what provision around deposits is included in the written sales agreement. If you do not get this sorted from the outset, any comeback on getting monies returned can be tough.” The seller will normally want a deposit paid as security for the sale and against any possible damage arising from the survey and/or sea-trial. In return the buyer will want that deposit to mean the boat is taken off the market until the deal is finalised or agreement ended. However, issues can arise if, for example, a buyer changes their mind after seeing and/or testing the boat, the survey report includes something unsatisfactory to the buyer or even if the buyer’s financial circumstances change. For the sake of both parties it is important to agree in what, if any, circumstances a deposit or part of it is refundable.

The RYA, BMF and ABYA all offer standard Sale and Purchase Agreements templates, with variations for direct sales and those involving brokers. If this is not offered to you remember there is nothing stopping you from presenting an agreement to the seller/broker and saying you would like to do business on these terms. As well as deposit terms, the agreement should include exactly what is being sold and included in the inventory (which should be attached to the agreement) and establish a means of payment and payment schedule acceptable to all parties. Ideally the negotiated purchase price will be subject to contract and survey. If any amendments are made to a standard agreement these should be clearly marked “As amended by...” and dated on the document. Once a contract is agreed it should be signed and dated by both parties. Only then should the buyer part with the deposit.

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

MARINA FOCUS ROYAL QUAYS MARINA
ALL AT SEA APRIL 2017
Royal Quays Marina Albert Edward Dock Coble Dene Road North Shields, Tel: 0191 2728282 royalquaysmarina@quaymarinas.com www.quaymarinas.com Marina Manager: Matthew Simms
Royal Quays Marina lies close to the mouth of the River Tyne at North Shields near Newcastle upon Tyne. THE marina first opened in 1998 and was part of the flagship Royal Quays urban renewal scheme undertaken by the former Tyne and Wear Development Corporation around the disused Albert Edward Dock. The area has been transformed and Royal Quays Marina lies as a centrepiece in the development of housing, leisure, retail, business and landscaped parkland. The marina is part of the Quay Marinas group which operates six other marinas across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, all of which demonstrate the company ethos of offering a ‘safe haven, friendly service and fine facilities’. The marina is conveniently located for boaters from across the north-east region and enjoys deep water access and all tide accessibility along with excellent facilities and secure sheltered berths. As a cruising ground the north-east coast offers some
stunning scenery, quiet unspoilt waters and vibrant ports. The marina attracts yachtsmen from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, many of whom find it a convenient landfall after crossing the North Sea, either to cruise the north-east coast or before heading north into Scottish waters. The marina attracts a wide spectrum of boating activity including cruising sailors, powerboaters, sea anglers, divers and sail training organisations. Royal Quays Marina is also a busy harbour catering for commercial vessels including charter, fishery protection, commercial fishing boats, RNLI lifeboats and MOD. A high standard of service is shown by being voted Runner Up in the Marina of the Year Awards 2015 in the prestigious UK coastal marina over 250 berths category.
BERTHING & STORAGE
Royal Quays Marina can accommodate vessels up to 30m LOA and 7m beam. The marina originally opened with 165 berths. Three further phases of expansion have seen capacity increase to the current 350 high quality Walcon aluminum framed pontoon berths. All are fully serviced. Overall capacity is 350 afloat and 120 ashore. The boatyard also has a 40 tonne boat hoist and jib crane.
ACCESS
The marina is situated on the north bank of the Tyne estuary, just 2nm from the outer pier heads. Entrance to Royal Quays Marina is via a modern sector gate ‘yacht lock’ which operates 24 hours at all states of the tide. The entrance to the River Tyne is straightforward. Enter between the piers and follow the channel, which is clearly marked by light buoys to the narrows by North Shields Fish Quay. From here progress upstream keeping to the right hand side of the channel.
Image: Daniel Parker
A watch should be kept for the Shields Ferry, which crosses to and fro between North and South Shields. A starboard hand light marks the outer waiting pontoon, whilst the lock traffic light are mounted above and behind on the stone middle pier. On entering the Tyne piers call ‘Tyne VTS’ on VHF CH 12. Once past North Shields Fish Quay call the marina (Call sign Royal Quays Marina) on VHF CH 80. Access is via lock gates 24 hours and locking is on demand. A waiting pontoon is available. Lines and fenders should be rigged to starboard, The fuel berth is situated in the approach channel on the seaward side of the lock gates. Situated close to the A19 (T) Tyne Tunnel, the marina is easily accessed by road from across the north-east. The Tyne and Wear Metro provides convenient links to Newcastle Central Station (rail) and Newcastle Airport. Royal Quays is adjacent to the DFDS ferry terminal, which provides daily sailings to and from Ijmuiden.

FACILITIES The marina offers first-class boating facilities for local folk of the north-east, many of whom have a strong affinity to the sea because of the region’s ship building and maritime heritage. The Herb Garden Harbour and new washroom facilities opened last month. The new washrooms have been designed to be the best on the coast and even feature a full sized bath so that anyone who has had a cold, wet trip can be rewarded with a long, hot soak before stepping next door for some well earned refreshment. The nearest chandler is Storrar Marine Store three miles away. Deliveries to the marina are available for cruising sailors.
CRUISING
Recommendations for a day cruise include Blyth (Royal Northumberland Yacht Club) to the north or Sunderland to the south. Both are a two-hour sail. Alternatively head up to the River Tyne to Newcastle Quayside (8nm) and moor in the heart of the city beneath the iconic Newcastle bridges for a spot of culture and a fabulous night in the ‘toon’. For a weekend cruise head north to the Northumberland (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) coast. Amble (23nm) is at the southern end of the AONB coast and there are stunning anchorages at Low Newton, the Farne Islands and Holy Island. A cruise along this coast takes in all the famous Northumberland castles at Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Holy Island.
For those interested in longer distance cruising either make your way north to the many small harbours of the Firth of Forth or for the more adventurous Royal Quays is an excellent starting point for a passage across the North Sea to Holland (240nm), offering the prospect of an enjoyable fortnight holiday cruising the Ijselmeer and Amsterdam. Note that strong onshore winds and seas can make entry into north-east harbours dangerous, but thankfully the prevailing wind is offshore.
LOCAL EATERIES
The newly opened café bar restaurant The Herb Garden Harbour is guaranteed to be a big hit with sailors and locals alike. For those looking to take a stroll or a short taxi ride North Shields Fish Quay
has an interesting mix of eating and drinking establishments, as does the attractive Tynemouth Village overlooking the harbour mouth. There are supermarkets in North Shields town centre, one mile away.

THINGS TO DO
The city of Newcastle is an exciting regional capital with stunning classical architecture and a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene. It always dispels wrongly held preconceptions held by many from further south. A great maritime heritage on the River Tyne, a must is a visit to Newcastle’s Discovery Museum to see Turbinia. Charles Parsons’ 34m steam powered ship was once the fastest ship in the world and an iconic part of the history of Tyneside (discoverymuseum.org.uk).

PREMIER RECEIVES INVESTORS IN PEOPLE GOLD PREMIER Marinas is celebrating after being awarded the Investors in People (LIP) Gold accreditation. Investors in People provides a best practice standard, offering accreditation to organisations that demonstrate continuous development and which operate with a customercentred focus. Having achieved Silver accreditation in February 2016, Premier Marinas is delighted to have achieved Gold accreditation in a short space of time. The Gold standard review was carried out earlier this year across Premier Marinas’ nine sites and resulted in the previous award of Silver being uplifted to Gold. After visiting Premier Marinas Head Office in Swanwick Marina, Investors in People Assessor, Margaret Faulkner, made the following comments: “Everyone at every site that I visited certainly came across as approachable and open and honest. The interviews
confirmed that people feel very strongly about delivering high standards of customer service and work together to ensure that they are maintained. The majority of staff really appreciated having what they called “an enjoyable place to work. “The Core Values are very much at the heart of the way the organisation operates and this was confirmed by interviewees at every level. Each site supports local charities and staff are encouraged to take part in sponsored events such as marathons and dress down Fridays to support local causes. “Supporting their local community is something staff feel very strongly about and small businesses and/or local contractors based within or near each marina are always the first port of call for any work needed rather than bringing in larger contractors from outside the area.”

BOATYARD CHANGES HANDS NEW EXTENSION FOR MYLOR?
Deacons Marina L-R Michael Prideaux, Dean & Reddyhoff Managing Director, Nick Gill, Deacons Marina Boatyard Manager, Rachael Foster, Deacons Marina Manager, and Lucas Shotts, Dean & Reddyhoff Director (ex-Deacons Marina Managing Director)
SOUTH coast marina operators, Dean & Reddyhoff Ltd completed the purchase of Deacons Boatyard Ltd, located in Hamble, Hampshire at the beginning of March. With 130 marina berths and a full-service boatyard for 150 boats ashore on the river Hamble, Deacons fits in well with the existing Dean & Reddyhoff marina network, which has 1,500 berths at Haslar, East Cowes, Portland and Weymouth marinas, plus a modern boat yard at Portland. The two companies have been working together for the last year, with Deacons offering boat yard services to Dean & Reddyhoff Solent-based berth holders. Dean & Reddyhoff Managing Director, Michael Prideaux, told us: “It is a great location on the Hamble River, and we respect their history and heritage. Deacons has developed
a really good reputation for helping customers look after their boats, and will be a great fit with our existing marinas.” Deacons Managing Director Lucas Shotts will become a Director at Dean & Reddyhoff, developing boat care services at Deacons and Portland boat yards. “Being part of the larger Dean & Reddyhoff group offers great opportunities for our customers, our staff and our on-site tenants,” he said. From April onwards, Deacons annual berth holders will receive the same boating benefits as all other Dean & Reddyhoff berth holders, including 21 free overnight visits to group marinas, discounts at on-site restaurants and free tickets for the Southampton Boat Show. www.deanreddyhoff.co.uk
ST KATHARINE DOCKS IS BRANDED ‘A CAMPER & NICHOLSONS MARINA’
CAMPER and Nicholsons Marinas will be managing and operating the marina on behalf of Blackstone from February 2017 under a three year contract. The refurbished marina can now accommodate superyachts up to 40m and has been brought up to modern standards. There is a new marina layout, new pontoons, lighting and utilities. Since Camper & Nicholsons Marinas won the redesign and refurbishment contract with Blackstone back in April 2015 a huge amount of work has gone into delivering the project on time and on budget. Guy Rudd, Managing Director of Blackstone Property Management, said: “We have been hugely impressed with the way Camper & Nicholsons Marinas have delivered this project both on time and in budget, and within tight controls. “We have made a significant investment in the St Katharine Docks estate and it is paying dividends in the number of new tenants we have at International House and the surrounding
buildings. The marina provides the estate with a USP which attracts tenants who want an inspiring and unconventional setting for their business in Central London.” The docks themselves are both ancient and historic, therefore protected - which added extra layers of complexity to the project. The restoration works were carefully undertaken to ensure no damage was done to the quay walls of the three marina basins within the dock. Considerable care was taken not to disrupt the flora and fauna around the docks – including fish, ducks and other birds. Fish spawning brushes were installed as part of the works to encourage more fish species within the marina. Camper & Nicholsons is widely recognised to be one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious yachting business names, with origins dating back to 1782. The company has specialised in marina and waterfront development for over 40 years and has provided services to clients in more than 25 countries worldwide.
MYLOR Yacht Harbour has begun widespread consultation into a project, which could see more than £1 million invested in a small and sensitive extension to its existing marina. Both a formal and informal consultation process is being held well in advance of MYH submitting a full planning application for a scheme, which could provide berths for 30 extra boats - meeting customer demand whilst supporting the future sustainability of the harbour, the related services and the associated employment it provides. The historic harbour, on the Carrick Roads near Falmouth, attracts sailors and other visitors from Cornwall and across the world. “The extension we are proposing is fairly modest,” Managing Director Neil Salter said, “and we anticipate that it would enhance the site whilst not changing the views, the ambience or making any significant demands on either the environment or the shoreside infrastructure. “We have been carefully considering what this project could look like for a long time and we are keen to ensure that there are no adverse effects – especially to those who cherish this harbour as much as we do.” Neil and his team have initially approached Truro and Penryn Harbour Authority, Cornwall Council, Natural England, the Environment
Agency, the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Office and the Marine Management Organisation for advice and guidance on the process and to ensure that all environmental and other legislative requirements are met prior to submitting a formal planning application. “At the same time, we have commenced a program of informal discussions with people who have an interest in Mylor Yacht Harbour,” said Neil. “This includes our customers, local fishermen, neighbours and the community to ensure that we do the right thing. We will also be applying to the MMO for the appropriate licensing before any planning submission and would like to get some good feedback before this takes place.” Anyone interested in discussing the draft proposals is welcome to contact Mylor Yacht Harbour on 01326 372121 www.mylor.com/marineteam

WINTER WORKS AT NEYLAND THIS winter, Neyland Yacht Haven undertook essential maintenance work by repiling 60 pontoon piles in their Upper Basin. A marina survey, undertaken last autumn, identified that the pontoon piles had reached the end of their natural life span and required replacing. Working with Falmouth Divers and Williams Shipping, old piles were removed and new 25m piles were installed over an eight-week period at the start of 2017. A wide range of local companies aided the work by offering staff, services and support to the marina and affected berth holders. Dale Sailing, East Llanion boatyard and

Milford Marina offered winter storage to boat owners while a range of local marine companies supported the work including Granger Tubolt Ltd and Cleddau Marine. Beggars Reach B&B also provided accommodation for the seven staff who resided in the area during the project. The project was successfully finished on time in the first week of March allowing berth holders to return to the Upper Basin well in advance of the new sailing season. Neyland Yacht Haven extend their warmest thanks to everyone involved with the project, to the local community for their rallying support and, most importantly, to berth holders for their assistance and cooperation. All the team at the marina are now looking forward to swapping their hard hats and high-vis jackets, for sun caps and lifejackets as the sailing season fast approaches. FASTER WIFI AT PLYMOUTH BOAT owners visiting Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour can now enjoy vastly improved WiFi services during their stay. The Marina at Sutton Harbour has made a substantial financial investment in its technology to improve wireless broadband Internet services available to berth holders at the 5 Gold Anchor-rated facility based in the historic heart of Plymouth. Now, 4Star and 5Star berth holders staying at the marina can access the free wireless Internet via smartphones, tablets or laptops and enjoy download speeds with the potential to reach a maximum capacity of 190 megabits per second (mbps).
Mark Brimacombe, Manager of The Marina at Sutton Harbour, said: “As well as visiting social media sites or browsing the Internet, today our berth holders increasingly want to access online streaming services, such as Netflix, to watch TV shows or films. “As a result, it was vital that we invested in improving the quality of the WiFi service we offered to our 4Star and 5Star berth holders, to increase download speeds and make that possible, and ensure that people coming to stay in Sutton Harbour’s 5 Gold Anchor Marina have access to fast, effective Internet services when those are included as part of their berthing package.”

CHEST PAIN AND ASTHMA IN THIS SERIES ALL AT SEA IS SPOTLIGHTING CHAPTERS FROM FIRST AID COMPANION TO GIVE BOATERS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TO DO IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS.
Image: Jinga/ Shutterstock.com
CHEST PAIN
When the blood vessels supplying blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked, the supply of oxygen to the heart muscle is affected. This results in pain. It may be felt in the centre of the chest or radiate out to left arm, jaw, back and upper abdomen. 1. Any chest pain should be treated as a medical emergency and radio medical advice sought.
2. Position the casualty on the deck sitting up well supported and loosen clothing to aid breathing. 3. Always be prepared to resuscitate. 4. Assist the casualty to take their own angina medication if they have it. 5. If pain persists give one aspirin tablet. This must be broken up and kept in the mouth under the tongue. Do not give aspirin to an asthmatic or someone who has a known aspirin allergy.
6. Closely monitor the casualty. Count the pulse rate and note if it is irregular. Note the breathing rate and the skin colour.
ASTHMA
An asthma attack is very frightening for the casualty. They will be struggling to breathe with wheezing, gasping and shortness of breath. Their skin colour may be pale or blue around the lips. Their pulse will be fast.

1. Position sitting upright. Leaning forward on support also helps. Keep away from potential asthma attack triggers. 2. Assist the casualty to take their own medication. If a known asthmatic is to be on board ensure they have sufficient supplies of their medication with them and that they are easily accessible. 3. Anxiety will make the attack worse. Constantly reassure. 4. If the attack is severe or the casualty has never experienced one like this before get help immediately. Do not wait for the situation to worsen. 5. Closely monitor the casualty. Count the pulse rate and breathing rate. Note the skin colour.
Splash proof and ring bound, First Aid Companion is a handy reference guide covering all the key topics surrounding first aid afloat. The book contains all the topics to be featured in this series, plus more, and although it should not be seen as a replacement for completing a first aid course, it could really help to make the difference if you find yourself in a potentially harmful or life-threatening situation at sea.

ENSURING BRANDS STAND OUT
CIDER is part of the trilogy, with ales and lagers, of our staple volume alcoholic drinks, served by the half or one pint glass and usually quaffed not sipped. We have enjoyed the revival of ‘real’ ale, arguably thanks to the CAMRA campaign, and latterly for craft lagers. Could a CAMRA-like approach to craft cider be next? There were 88 craft ciders listed at last year’s CAMRA Great British Beer Festival at London’s Olympia. Unlike real ale, though, cider has an established but fragmented background of smallscale artisanal production while the volume is claimed by a relatively few nationally marketed brands. Strongbow, for example, claims 15 per cent of the total cider market. Distribution is a major hurdle for small producers, but the general consumer interest in all things ‘craft’ has prompted supermarkets to allow

WHERE TO NEXT?
A first step is to build a consensus to define what makes a craft cider. The basics are traditional production methods, from specific cider apples (not suitable for eating) with nothing added except, sometimes, cider yeast to regulate the natural but inconsistent yeasts from the apple skins themselves. This is what creates the bubbles with no pasteurisation or carbonation. They are generally around six to 8.5 per cent abv. Like wine grapes, cider apples have tannin, acid, sugar and aromatic precursors (aromas and flavours released during the crushing process) necessary to make a complex fermented beverage. Unlike wine grapes, these are rarely contained

Craft cider really is local, and there is plenty of scope for the makers to differentiate their own brand and for us to experiment and choose a personal favourite. Prices are lower than for ales due to tax rates less than half the rate for beer which results in shelf prices between £1.20 and £2.50 for typical 500ml bottles. Henney’s Classic (Herefordshire), classed as ‘dry’, was actually found by my younger age group tasting panel to have noticeable sweetness. £1.20 for 500ml at six per cent abv. Westons Stowford Press (Herefordshire) Medium Dry is refreshing and, they say, “100 per cent local home-pressed apples from blossom to glass”, £1.20 for 500ml at 4.5 per cent. For a rare ‘single’ try Thatchers Katy, the name of the apple, medium dry from Somerset, 7.4 per cent £2.55 for 500ml bottle. To open your eyes to the broader spectrum, add Aspall from Suffolk's bittersweet apples. The Premier Cru 7 per cent abv is dry and silky with floral aromas, and at £1.80 in my local Sainsbury’s for a 500ml bottle it is a bargain. Recommended, as many ciders are, to go with roast pork, chilli con carne, curry and stilton cheese.

within one apple variety at the required levels. Thus most ciders are blends from different ciderspecific apples. The apple varieties are rated depending on the level of acidity or tannins, bitter sweet, bitter sharp, sharp and sweet. Like wine grapes, geography (terroir) also plays a part in the apple flavour. Their names are unfamiliar, curiously artisanal, such as Dabinett, bittersweet from Somerset, Sweet Coppin, sweet from Devon, Broxwood Foxwhelp, bittersharp from Hereford and Crimson King, sharp from Somerset. The cider end product is judged on a scale from one (very sweet) to seven (very dry) and may be fruity, sharp, cask matured, clear or cloudy.
