exciting ways to use his yacht – had been planning this most recent trick for months in advance. Skipper Ross Daniel was charged with the challenge of adjusting the angle of heel to ensure that Thomson had the best possible chance. Stunt coordinator Andy Bennett was on hand to co-ordinate the
action, whilst a medical team and a dive team also stood by. Having safely returned to dry land after the stunt – performed off the Spanish coast near CĂĄdiz - Thomson commented: “There were lots of things that could have gone terribly wrong: the wind could have pulled me off the mast and catapulted me onto the deck; I could have hit the water at the wrong angle or surfaced too quickly. These were all factors we needed to consider far in advance. “Luckily (and despite my fear of heights), we succeeded in pulling it off. And as things turned out, the stunt was far more dangerous than I would ever have imagined. All in all, I can honestly say that it was the most stupid thing I’ve ever done in my whole life!â€? This was not the first stunt from the British yachtsman; a video went viral in 2012 showing Alex Thomson scaling the orange keel of his yacht. SUNSEEKER International marked the official British launch of its new flagship tri-deck 155 Yacht on 24 March with the help of its new owner, Formula 1’s Eddie Jordan. The Formula 1 star was in attendance alongside Sunseeker International’s Group President, Robert Braithwaite. As the biggest project ever undertaken by the British based luxury yacht manufacturer,

the official launch was a monumental day for Sunseeker. Braithwaite commented: “We were incredibly proud to launch the 155 Yacht here in Poole with Mr Jordan. The 155 Yacht is a truly iconic British yacht. From drawing board through to testing, the yacht was designed and built in Poole, so it really is British through and through and the fact the launch took place in Poole made it all the more special.�

IN a blustery second meeting of the Brooks Macdonald Warsash Spring Series, IRC1 entrant James Gair’s Mills 39 Local Letterbox Zero II was forced to retire after losing their mast man overboard. The incident occurred during a gybe, in winds gusting up to 25 knots. Cornel Riklin’s J/111 Jitterbug, also competing in IRC1, stood by during the incident. Fortunately, the crew member was quickly retrieved, unharmed. As a precaution, Solent Coast Guard arranged a paramedic to meet the boat on arrival in Cowes. Jitterbug resumed racing, and after nearly three hours’ racing, lost by just 26 seconds to J-Dream (J/111 - David and Kirsty Apthorp) on handicap. Following the race, the race committee requested redress. The squally weather took its toll on boats, equipment and sailors across the fleets, with several dramatic broaches, but the race officers set tight challenging courses keeping all the crews busy – and warm. In the SB20 class, Crewsaver Racing (Greg O’Brien), winner of the first two races, retired from the final race with a broken boom after crossing the start line, leaving Flutter with a class win.

What’s your ‘new horizon’? IT may be that you’ve been on and around boats for as long as you can remember, or it may be that you’ve only recently stepped afloat. Perhaps you even have yet to do so – in which case we hope All at Sea’s diverse range of stories inspires you to go ahead! But for the more experienced boaters out there, whenever it was that you took on your very first boating experience, can you remember what it was that motivated you to do so? Why you first decided to give sailing or powerboating a try? It was a question asked to me this month by a friend as conversation led us to compare our sports; turns out, she has long been tempted to give sailing a go, but has yet to make time in her busy triathlon training schedule to make this happen. Overlooking this (poor!) excuse, her questions left me pondering long and hard. Having started sailing at the age of 13 at the instigation of my parents - the obvious push factors - it was a tough memory to recall. I guess the prospect of adventuring on our own, across the lake in our bright yellow Cadet, and the fact I was willing to try pretty much anything new and exciting at that age, formed the pull factors.
But that led me to wonder, what is it that’s kept me in the sport? Two decades on and I am just as keen to be on the water as ever before, no matter what boat, where it is, or even what the weather is doing. Is it the challenge of taking on the elements? Stretching my tactical knowledge? Pushing my boat-handling skills? Seeing new places? Meeting new people? Learning new things? I came to the conclusion that it was all these things - and more: being on the water so readily ticks all the boxes when it comes to seeking adventure, but there’s always a new horizon to head for. And that I still can’t resist! Putting together this month’s issue of All at Sea – once again, jam packed full of diverse boating stories from all around our coastline as well as from overseas – brings home just how much our sport has to offer, whether your boat is sail or power, large or small. Looking ahead as yet another busy season gathers momentum, am endlessly grateful to my teenage self for giving it a go and never looking back. Extremes face final shoot out IT was a sweltering hot day in Muscat, Oman, for the final 11-boat showdown at the Extreme Sailing Series™, where the Arabian peninsula saved the best for last, with winds that blasted across the course at a steady 20 knots, with gusts of 26, before a final race shoot out. Four teams were gunning for the top spot and there was no room for error, with just four points between them – and 20 points on the table for the taking. The defending
champions and home team on The Wave, Muscat made a real statement of intent from the gun, with an aggressive start that saw them lead the fleet of the line, and Leigh McMillan, Sarah Ayton, Pete Greenhalgh, Kinley Fowler and Nasser Al Mashari didn’t look back, snatching the win from the hands of the Kiwi, Swiss and Danish teams, to claim not only the Act win, but putting them top of the overall Series leaderboard after two Acts.
Emirates Team New Zealand, with two race wins and a third place in the final race, had enough to claim second overall, bettering their fourth place finish from Act 1, Singapore, which for skipper Dean Barker, was the objective. Overnight leaders Alinghi came out of the blocks with a win in the first race of the day, but couldn’t replicate the performance, and a fourth place in the last race left the Swiss settling for third, one point behind the Kiwis.
HILARY’S NEW OCEAN RECORD QUADRIPLEGIC sailor Hilary Lister, GAC Pindar ambassador, has set a new trans-ocean record by becoming the first paralysed woman to complete the 850nm sea voyage from Mumbai in India to Muscat, Oman. Her sailing partner, Omani yachtswoman Nashwa Al Kindi, also set a record of her own as the first Arab woman sailor to complete the trip. The pair sailed into port at the end of their nine-day voyage which started from the busy port on the western coast of India and crossed the Indian Ocean. Back on dry land, Hilary says the hardest part was getting off the boat: “I never wanted
to get off!” It was the latest in a series of challenges that Hilary has set herself. She first made it to the record books in 2005, when she sailed the English Channel, and again in 2009 when she sailed solo around Britain. She adds: “We had a few challenges, but for me it’s all about pushing yourself to the limit. It’s meeting those challenges that gives me so much pleasure. “We had some fun moments too. There were dolphins and whales along the way – and I even got slapped in the face by a flying fish. And at night, the sight of phosphorescence on the water and clear starry skies is absolutely beautiful.”
Heading into the final day, J.P. Morgan BAR were within touching distance of the podium but the Brits struggled under the building breeze, before a hydraulics failure in the penultimate race forced them to retire for the day, dashing their podium dreams. Act 3 of the 2014 global tour in Qingdao, China, presented by Land Rover, one of the most notoriously tricky racecourses on the circuit, is next, over 1-4 May.

Garmin has been appointed by the RYA as an Official Supplier to the British Sailing team up until 2017. All members of the British Sailing team’s Podium squad will have Garmin’s quatix or Forerunner 910Xt advanced GPS watches for on and off water training, plus use of Garmin’s new VIRB elite action cameras, for on board HD footage.
Dee Caffari (GBR), Sara Hastreiter (USA) and elodie-Jane Mettraux (SUI) will all be joining Team SCA, the only allfemale team, in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. Caffari is no stranger to ocean racing having competed in the Vendée Globe Race, Global Challenge, Barcelona World Race and four transatlantic races. She is the only woman to have sailed solo around the world in both directions (eastabout and west-about), as well as being the only female to have sailed around the world non-stop three times. She also holds the female crewed monohull Round Britain and Ireland speed record, a record she established in June 2009, with Team SCA crew mate Sam Davies. Hastreiter started sailing four years ago and in that time has established an impressive CV comprising of short-handed events and yacht deliveries and has now sailed some 40,000 nautical miles in that time. Mettraux, who’s sister Justine joined the team earlier this year, won the amateur ranking in the 2012 Tour de France a la Voile and was instrumental in building the Swiss all-female match racing team in 2013.
For the past eighteen months SCA has been trialing candidates, and with some seven months left to the start, this selection has now been honed down to a current squad of twelve. The three new crew join a squad that includes: Sally Barkow (USA), Carolijn Brouwer (NeD), Sophie Ciszek (AUS), Sam Davies (GBR), Abby ehler (GBR), Stacey Jackson (AUS), Annie Lush (GBR), Justine Mettraux (SUI) and Liz Wardley (AUS). The team is based in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote and is due to complete two transatlantic passages in May as they ramp up their training in advance of the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in October this year. 11 members of the squad will make up the actual race team with the remainder as reserves. “There is no doubt that there is a huge amount of female talent out there that has just not had the opportunity to break through the ‘glass ceiling’ of offshore racing. We very much hope that this team will set the benchmark for women’s offshore sailing,” comments Richard Brisius, Managing Director, Team SCA.

GARMIN, in conjunction with SailRacer, the sailing data and events specialists, launched the Garmin Summer Series at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace 1-2 March. Five venues, from Ullswater in the north to Calshot on the south coast, have signed up for the Garmin Summer Series. each event offers a variety of exciting and competitive multi-class handicap or pursuit racing for all ages and abilities, including the prestigious Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy. Voted as one of the world’s top 10 must-do events, this race covers a seven mile course around Ullswater Lake. Other events for the Garmin Summer Series 2014 are: Carsington Summer Trophy; Datchet Summer Flyer; Oxford Summertime Blue; GJW Direct SailFest. With the focus on family fun as well as onthe-water racing, the Garmin Summer Series events include onshore activities, evening entertainment, coaching sessions and live event tracking. This event formula has proven successful, already attracting entries from a multitude of dinghy classes to the SailRacer events. All the Garmin Summer Series events will feature SailRacer’s GPS tracking services. Thanks to the sponsorship from Garmin, these events will now integrate onboard footage using the rugged new Garmin VIRB elite action camera. This enables sailors and coaches to review their on-the-water performance after each race, and will enhance and increase the media coverage and online viewings post each event. In addition to a Garmin perpetual trophy for the overall winner of the Series, a VIRB elite action camera will be presented to the winning boat at each event.

LONDON’S Maritime Body Trinity House is set to host a rare public open day in May to celebrate its 500th Anniversary. The open day will take place on 17 May, between 10am and 3pm. Visitors will gain an insight into Trinity House’s fascinating history. In 1514 a young King Henry VIII granted a Royal Charter to a fraternity of mariners called the Guild of the Holy Trinity “so that they might regulate the pilotage of ships in the King’s streams” and the month of May marks the 500th anniversary of this milestone event in British maritime history. Cowes RNlI lifeboat raced to east Cowes Marina recently after smoke was reported from a ketch. Isle of Wight firemen dealt with the threat as it became clear that the smoke was from a wood burning stove, thankfully not a repeat of the fire on board a motor-cruiser at the same marina last November.

GREAT Britain has taken its third win in the 2013-14 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, taking first place of Race 9.1 to China’s ‘Sailing City’ of Qingdao. The stage from Singapore had to be restarted from Hong Kong, following an unscheduled pit stop for rigging repairs, run on an elapsed time basis as the boats restarted individually as soon as the work was completed. GREAT Britain achieved an impressive elapsed time of five days six hours and
26 minutes. Derry~Londonderry~Doire and OneDLL took second and third places with elapsed times of five days eight hours 30 minutes, and five days 16 hours 54 minutes respectively. The teams were awarded their podium pennants in an impressive prizegiving and welcome ceremony hosted by Qingdao. Skipper of GREAT Britain, Simon Talbot was confident in his performance, but also wary of current overall leaders OneDLL who at one
stage looked set to challenge for the all-important 12 points. “I knew we had achieved a competitive elapsed time when we arrived, and I was confident that we either had first or second place,” he said. “I can’t tell you how great it feels to wins this race. It was full of never ending challenges, but the team worked so hard and really pulled together. “I’m so proud of the crew, all our hard work has paid off and to win 12 points is fantastic,” added Simon.
A group of officer cadets from Warsash Maritime Academy , which is part of Southampton Solent University, have braved the elements by spending 24 hours in a liferaft to raise funds for sailing respite charity, Sail 4 Cancer. On 21 March, 39 cadets experienced firsthand what it would be like to be cast adrift with their ship sinking behind them. They spent 24 hours in five liferafts which were secured to two buoys in the River Hamble. This is the first time that a maritime academy has taken part in Sail 4 Cancer’s 24 hour liferaft challenge, which raises funds to provide respite breaks for families affected by cancer. Thomas Jones, Officer Cadet (sponsored by Maersk Crewing Ltd) wishes he’d known about the charity when he lost his mother to cancer. “I feel that this charity would have helped me deal with the stress of the situation. They support people by helping to take their minds off things and creating some great lasting memories.”

New IRC RACe to SpAIN
The Royal Western Yacht Club is pairing up with Gijon tourismo, Spain for a race from Plymouth to the northern Spanish resort. Starting on 22 June, the event, which is for IRC rated yachts, is a fully crewed race across the Bay of Biscay finishing in the sunshine and hospitality of Gijon. With entries limited to 25 boats and the high value £150 race fee, it’s imperative those wishing to take part express an early interest. The entry fee includes free berthing in Plymouth before the start and three days in the marina at Gijon. Added to which, during their stay in Gijon, entrants will be treated to tours and entertainment.
After the official reception in the City hall there will be regional parties, known as ‘espichas’, music concerts and a free public transport card for competitors to roam and soak up the holiday atmosphere this beautiful city has to offer. John Lewis, Commodore of the RWYC who competed in the last race to Gijon, commented: “Visiting Gijon is a must if you wish to cruise along the Northern Spanish coast. Our event partners, Gijon Tourism in supporting the race, have provided a unique opportunity to visit the lovely Asturias region which should not be missed. FireFighters battle it out on the solent The United Kingdom Firefighters’ Sailing Challenge 2014 takes place 29 April to 1 May. In recent years, this fun but competitive regatta has attracted entries from all ‘blue light’ services, including firefighters, police, ambulance and mountain rescue crews. 2014 sees the 11th edition of the event. Teams will gather in the Solent to pit their sailing skills against one another in identical Sunsail F40 sailing yachts over three days of intense racing. As well as attracting experienced racers, the event also welcomes those with little or no experience, enabling them to discover the thrills of racing ‘round the cans’ in a large regatta, using a handicap passage race to help level the odds. The event raises significant money for supported charitable institutions. Over the last ten years in excess of £56,000 has been raised for various good causes. A broken down fishing boat, in danger of drifting into the Solent’s main shipping lane, was rescued by Cowes RNlI. the 12ft Jolly Dodger, with two anglers aboard, was unable to restart its engine after fishing off east Cowes. It was eventually towed to Cowes Yacht Haven.

The Welsh Yachting Association’s Big Weekend saw recognition for a host of clubs and volunteers across Wales for their remarkable contributions to the sport. RYA Chief executive Sarah Treseder was among 100 guests at the Plas Menai National Watersports centre. Port Dinorwic, just a few miles from Plas Menai, boasted winners of the both the coach of the year and young coach of the year categories; mother-of-two Jo Powell being recognised for her work developing family based sailing while 17-year-old Jack Wild was recognised for spending more than 10 hours a week coaching all ages and abilities. Powys had a clean sweep of the club awards with the participation club of the year going to Llangorse Sailing Club in the Brecon Beacons, while Clywedog Sailing Club were the performance club of the year. The outstanding contribution awards went to three very worthy winners. 85-year-old harry Bainbridge has given more than 50 years of his life to help Gresford sailing club near Wrexham. Bill Jackson has been a big part of Llandegfedd sailing club in Monmouthshire for 25 years and still coaches actively at club and at regional level, while Julian Bridges, a stalwart of Port Dinorwic, was recognised for 25 years of voluntary work as well as still being an active coach there. Steven Morgan, WYA Chief executive, said: “I am always in awe of the time and dedication volunteers put into their clubs, without them our sport would not grow and develop. “We had an incredibly strong list of winners once again and it was fantastic to give these people and clubs some recognition for the work they do.”

Britannia already own Lancelot ii, a Beneteau First 40 which has proven herself on the race circuit, taking first place in the highly competitive rOrC Caribbean 600 race (irC2) earlier in the year. Work to improve and expand North Uist’s marine tourism facilities is underway following a £380,000 investment from The Crown Estate. A full house of 24 teams were selected to compete in the UK Team Racing National Championships at Spinnaker Sailing Club, arriving to a blustery - but sunny – breeze for two days of racing. The over-subscribed entry list meant that all the facets of the strong UK team-racing scene were represented, including 2013 University National Champions (Bristol University), 2013 School National Champions (sailing as Royal Thames YC), 2013 Wilson winners and 2013 Irish National Championship winners (Wessex Exempt) and the two-time UK National champions returning to defend their title (Spinnaker Auspicious). Based on performances over the past year, teams were seeded into 4 ‘mini-leagues’, from which gold, silver and bronze leagues were run. The high standard of entries made
for some extremely close racing, especially given the 30-degree shifts! 101 races were completed on Saturday, with Spinnaker Auspicious the only team unbeaten. Sunday saw a series of close playoffs for the semis and finals, amidst hail storms, 25-knot squalls and periods of flat clam. Then, in a first-to-three-wins final, Wessex Exempt (Ben Ainsworth/Rach Williamson, Tom Heywood/Cat Friend, Jon Pinner/Kerry Capps) made the most of some solid starting to defeat Spinnaker Auspicious 3-0 and win the Prince Philip Trophy and the 2014 UK Team Racing National Championship. The prize-giving was a crowded affair, recognising the immense contribution of Spinnaker SC members to make the event such a success. Teams will now be looking towards the coveted Wilson Trophy, West Kirby 9-11 May.

The 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Traditional Boat Festival is in its 21st year and will take place from 27-29 June. The festival will be the setting for the inaugural North Sea Ring meeting, with representatives from boat clubs and groups from around the North Sea area attending, including Sweden, Germany and Norway. The event will provide an opportunity for participants to exchange information and to present examples of the work their projects produce. As well as traditional wooden boat building skills, food, music and textiles will
form the focus. Roger Goodyear, chairman of the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival, says “The North Sea Ring is a fantastic opportunity to keep history and culture alive in the 21st century. “There will be a huge range of practical learning and educational events for participants of all ages – and it will offer a unique chance for people to really get hands on with new activities. The 505 is a boat that many would describe as the best all round sailing dinghy ever launched. With its gracefully curved and flared topsides, the boat has drawn favourable comparisons to style icons such as the Spitfire and the Jaguar e-Type, which may well help account for the enduring success of a boat that is just about to celebrate its 60th birthday. Olympic trials To understand the background to this most innovative of dinghy designs, it is necessary to go right back to the early post war Olympic regattas. Olympic competition back then largely meant racing in the Metre classes, with just one dinghy allowed, which was a single-hander. however, the growth in dinghy sailing around the world prompted the IYRU (International Yacht Racing Union, now ISAF) to seek a performance two-man dinghy. The ‘establishment’ dinghy designer of the day was the Isle of Wight’s Uffa Fox, who took on the
commission for the new boat with his design for the Tornado dinghy. Sadly, the heavy, boxy Tornado was not a success, which forced the IYRU to seek an alternative design. They quickly settled on the new 20ft long Flying Dutchman, but before this could be ratified, a series of Trials were to be held. 16 boats headed for the Trial site in the Netherlands, among them new designs from Ian Proctor - the Osprey - and Jack holt’s racy hornet, which though smaller than the other boats was one of the star performers. Another new boat was the Coronet, designed by Devon-based dinghy sailor John Westall, with his eye catching boat being remarkable for its widely flared topsides. Flare FOr design Interestingly, the idea to curve the hull outwards in this manner was not originally Westall’s. Instead, the idea had first been developed up on the east coast by Austin ‘Clarence’ Farrar, who had built a

new International 14 with a flared hull. Just as with the trapeze in 1938, the 14 class moved rapidly to ban the new hull shape by the simple expedient of a ‘no hollows in the topsides rule’, a change that quickly spread from the 14s to most of the other dinghies of the day. however, Westall had seen the value in the hull form and asked Farrar if he could utilise the layout on the Coronet dinghy he was currently designing for the IYRU Trials. With the flared hull banned elsewhere, Farrar readily agreed and the new boat was soon showing its paces out on the water. With nothing less than a place at the Olympics at stake, the conduct of some boats at the Trials was questionable in the extreme. Suffice to say that some boats illegally ‘team raced’ against other entrants, whilst two members of the same team ended up having on the water fisticuffs! As expected, the Flying Dutchman was selected as the new international dinghy, but a different fate would await the Coronet. The main French entries, the Canetons, had been shown up by a number of the new designs. What was needed was a ‘tweaked’ Coronet that would meet the design criteria of the Caneton. instant success Westall shortened the hull, changed the sail plan and the 505 was born. The first ever prototype was built in the Warsash boatyard of Jack Chippendale, with designer and boatbuilder racing each other to

see which would be completed first, the hull or the design. (The hull won by the thickness of a veneer or two.) The French and UK sailors both recognised the attractions of the new boat, which quickly set new standards for performance. What was amazing about the 505 was its ability to do everything better than any other boat. As a result, the 505 quickly spread, from the boisterous conditions of San Francisco Bay to the massive rollers of the South African coast at Durban. Yet the 505 was equally happy ghosting along in the zephyrs on a Swiss lake, or wriggling its way down a narrow river in Belgium. Within two years of getting International status, the first World Championships were being held, an event that has grown in size and importance ever since (the 2012 Championships in France saw 197 entries). In recent years, the rise of the ‘skiff revolution’ has hit participation in the UK hard, but at the same time, worldwide support for the boat has never been higher. however, there is good news for the class here on home waters, with the announcement that in 2016, the World Championships will run from the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy. On the last two occasions that the Championships have come to the UK - Mounts Bay in 1995 and hayling Island in 2006 - the winner was a British boat. With the 505 remaining as the ultimate in ‘all round’ dinghies, we hope that once again a British boat will triumph at Weymouth.

Accessing the thrill and excitement of a sailing holiday is often a challenge for disabled sailors. However, here are a few options that are well worth considering.
Finding a sailing holiday suitable for people with disabilities can be a challenge in the UK, let alone abroad. The most obvious choices in the UK would be day-sailing at one of the specially adapted outdoor centres like those operated by the Calvert Trust at Exmoor or Keswick. Options which involve an overnight or longer on a boat reduce choice still further but the Jubilee Sailing Trust or the Thomas Morley Trust do at least offer these opportunities to those with a more severe disability. www.calvert-trust.org.uk www.jst.org.uk www.disabledsailing.org But what about sailing abroad as part of your holiday? if you are a wheelchair user, the options are fairly limited and do not come cheap. Inspiring a new generation
IT will be seven years this year since my team and I sailed around the UK and it is always heartening when people want to hear the story. Of course, over the years, as the adventure is retold, the waves have
got bigger, the storms more fierce, the cold more severe and the sharks more numerous, but at the heart of what we achieved, conquering what was a particularly big challenge - in 107 consecutive days, back to back, visiting 51 harbours - remains as one of my proudest moments. I am always pleased when I am asked to speak about this to kids, not that my diary allows many opportunities these days. They are always the most probing, most honest and direct of all audiences. Only yesterday I was asked to speak to a couple of age groups at Corpus Christi school in Boscombe, Dorset; the youngest aged six, the oldest were 10. I’m never sure whether it is my talk or skipping 30 minutes of lessons which the children like most about my visits, but it is always a pleasure to talk about sailing to our next generation and hopefully sow a few seeds of enthusiasm for our sport. A few things I have learned when speaking to children; never tell them not to hold their breath – a nanosecond after giving the direction not to hold their breath, in front of your eyes, the faces of your entire audience will go puce, cheeks puffed out, I am
certain one of them came close to fainting yesterday! Secondly, have a private bet with the teachers how long it will be before you get asked if you have seen a shark. At Corpus Christi it was the very first question which surprised even me. Then be prepared for direct follow ups: what was the biggest shark, how
many sharks and have you ever been attacked by any sharks? Finally, be prepared for the unexpected, and yesterday I was hit by two sidewinders. Firstly, when I was sat in my boat all day, how did I have a wee? And secondly, am I happier now as a disabled person or before my accident? Wow. What a question from a six year old. How would you answer that question?

Great white shark diverts away from UK waters MARINE WILDLIFE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
THE great white shark Lydia – all 14ft and 2,000lbs of her - is now reported to be heading away from the UK and veering northwest according to Ocearch, an international research organisation operating from on board vessel MV Ocearch, complete with at-sea laboratory and a 75,000lb capacity hydraulic platform. The satellite-tagged fish crossed the mid-Atlantic ridge in March, starting her journey in Florida a year ago, and has travelled over 30,500km since but is now unlikely to reach UK shores - no doubt prompting mixed feelings but overall some relief for water users and boaters here!
WILDLIFE SPOTTING
The great news is that there is still plenty of amazing marine wildlife in UK waters – from the largest fish in British waters, the basking shark, to the Mola Mola, or Sun Fish, the heaviest bony fish in the world. Both of these and many more are shown in The Green Blue’s very first e-book, The Green Marine Wildlife Guide. First published in print in 2010 in partnership with The Wildlife Trusts, the guide contains beautiful illustrations by artist Martin Camm, as well as video footage of a number of species in their natural habitat. The new free digital version for iPad and iPhone (launched 3 March to support United Nations World
Wildlife Day) provides interactive touch-based illustrations of the most common species of marine wildlife, together with a map of the UK showing what marine wildlife boaters can expect to see in 10 specific locations around the coast throughout the year. There are also top tips for spotting marine wildlife and, most importantly, guidance on how to avoid disturbing or hurting them. With the spring weather starting to entice us back onto the water, whether racing or cruising under sail or motor, following a few simple rules of the road will not just enhance the experience of being up close and personal with some amazing creatures, but also protect their welfare as well as prevent you from falling foul of the law. Top tips include giving animals a wide berth, slowing down and not outstaying your welcome.
IGNORANCE NO EXCUSE
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, now provides increased protection for wildlife. It is vital that boaters are aware of how to minimise any
disturbance that their boating activities may cause. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, as shown by a recent case of two skippers whose actions were linked to the death of a juvenile inshore bottlenose dolphin in the Camel Estuary, near Padstow in July 2013. The skippers admitted reckless disturbance, which, under the Act carries a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment and/or a £5000 fine. In this instance, the skippers were dealt with by ‘restorative justice’ and forced to complete a Wildlife Safe (WiSe) course on how to view marine wildlife safely, responsibly and within the law.

The sailing conditions varied greatly over the 720nm; from the fresh, cold wind in Bahrain to the warm breeze of Oman; from high powered planning conditions to drifting in calm light airs. We soon learnt that due to the predominantly thermal driven nature of the wind it tended to follow the sun during the day and then die down as sun fell. We saw some magnificent wildlife, including dolphins, sea turtles, flying fish and sea snakes. Obstacles to avoid included oil platforms, fishing nets and badly charted areas – difficult to deal with especially at night. The region is full of surprises with something different around every corner; from a fleet of moored oil container ships off the coast of Fujairah to reclaimed land around the Palms and World Islands off the coast of Dubai. For me, the leg between Ras al Khaimah, UAe and Dibba, Oman was the most fascinating as we raced past the dramatic, mountainous coastline, a huge contrast from the flat desert landscapes and large metropolitan cities of the UAe. This leg also saw us sailing through a narrow gap in the cliffs at the Straits of hormuz, touch and go to say the least! Another highlight was sailing along the Corniche of Abu Dhabi. This narrow strip of water cuts into the city to provide a fantastic natural arena for in-
port racing. With flat water and a good sea breeze the fleet sailed in the shadow of the towering city above and in view of busy commuters and business professionals ashore. Cultural differences included religion, dress, day to day behaviour and cuisine. Custom formalities required to move in and out of each country were surprising - something perhaps we take for granted in europe. Despite this, at each stop over we were welcomed with open arms by helpful marinas, local dignitaries and many more.
InspIrIng trAdItIon
Sailing is a long-standing tradition within some of the areas around the Gulf, especially with Dhow racing and there is a growing campaign to revive the region’s heritage. The Persian Gulf is a fantastic area to sail and I hope that love for the sport there continues to grow. Sailing in this region was both fascinating and inspiring. The race presented challenging offshore legs and tight inshore racing, and rewarded us with beautiful landscapes and warm hospitality. The onedesign nature of SATT is perfect and its length and intense schedule demands endurance and focus.

The Middle east is a part of the world that I had not been to before and I certainly didn’t foresee that I would be competing in a yacht race there. But, when invited to join the Plymouth Sailing Team, sponsored by Messe Frankfurt, to compete in Sailing Arabia The Tour (SATT) I jumped at the chance to explore the Gulf by sea. The race, part of Oman Sail’s mission to revitalise the country’s sailing heritage, took us from Manama, Bahrain to Muscat, Oman via seven stopovers and four counties. Loosely based on the Tour de France a la Voile, the SATT takes you to the heart of high rise cities and past dramatically baron coastlines. This, along with a mix of challenging weather and a one design fleet of Farr 30s, makes it a very unique and exciting competition.

convenience, which can mean missing out on rest. “You must maintain a constant focus on getting the maximum power from the sails. That takes a lot of practice, patience, persistence and training. That means removing any shoreside distractions.” When he is racing, Sir Robin restricts emails sent to him to only the most important ones, and won’t read news. “You must also accept a loss of privacy and that having a social life is hard,” Sir Robin adds.
Racing round the world is no easy ride
What sacrifices need to be made to be victorious in the notoriously tough 40,000 mile Clipper Round the World Yacht Race? MENTAL and physical exhaustion, sleep deprivation, foregoing a social life in port, keeping a constant focus on actively performing, not just surviving – and that’s just the beginning. Olly Cotterell, the professional skipper of OneDLL, currently in first place in the world’s longest ocean race, says you will need to push yourself well beyond your preconceived limits and often be very uncomfortable. “In order to stand on the podium first you must stand on the edge,” says Olly. “Tactically you need to keep the yacht on the edge of its ability all the time, a bit like a Formula 1 car going around a corner. However if you push too hard you will break equipment. Huge amounts of time and effort need to be put in even before the yacht leaves the pontoon, and continues well after you get in. Preparation is at the top of OneDLL’s performance pyramid. “This can be hard when all you really want to do is go have a beer or see friends and

It is an exponential test. It requires team work, concentration, consistency, hard graft, determination, persistence and resilience.”
Eric Holden, the skipper of Henri Lloyd, currently in second position in this year’s edition, says that if you have a desire to
achieve something great, and are actively looking for ways of doing so, then the choices you make are not sacrifices. “We are not doing anything special that others couldn’t duplicate, but we do start with the mindset of asking what else we can do.” Race director Justin Taylor, who was a skipper in the 2002-03 and 2009-10 editions, adds: “It takes total dedication to achieve the best results. For example, not speaking to your teammates when you are on the helm, to remain totally focused, and accepting that certain sacrifices must be made in port too, if you want to be the most prepared.”

SAILING IN THE CITY AFTER a hard day in the office, pounding the treadmill can feel pretty soulless……..but what better way to wind down than to switch a business suit for a wetsuit, and set sail. For those who live in and around our cities, people often assume that getting out on the water isn’t an option without travelling to the coast or further afield. We take a look at a few of the patches of water in and around our cities, helping you get on the water whether beginner, improver, inspiring racer, or perhaps a company looking to offer opportunities to your employees.
MANCHESTER
If you said ‘Manchester City’ to anyone, the reply is most likely to be ‘football’. But in the very heart of the city is Debdale Outdoor Centre. Operated by Manchester City Council, Debdale provides Manchester and the surrounding districts with a thriving watersports centre with a first class range of activities and leisure opportunities. With clubs for adults and juniors operating all year round at low cost, Debdale is able to get someone as young as seven years old out on the water to experience sailing and windsurfing. Club activities take place on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings at £10 per person, which includes the use of all equipment needed, and a specific club for juniors. In addition to the club activities, the centre also runs a wide variety of youth courses, during the school summer holidays as well as half term weeks, pay and play opportunities, demo days for you and your family to have a taste of watersports and plenty of social events including the ‘Gorton Carnival’.

“Don’t let inner cities stop you from getting involved in the exciting sports of sailing and windsurfing,” says Ben Julian from Edgbaston Reservoir, a patch of water with the sights of the city in the background. Edgbaston offers two and a half hour sailing taster session for just £20 which are fun introductions in Picos and Wayfarers for those who want to try something new. By the end of the session, participants should be able to sail in a straight line and follow a simple course. Edgbaston Watersports also provides RYA windsurfing courses for adults and youngsters throughout the year, as well as hosting demo days a few times a year, which sees keen windsurfers from around the region heading to the centre.

BRISTOL
There are fantastic opportunities to enjoy sailing in Bristol. Tony Wood, RYA Regional Development Officer in the South West explains: “Bristol has fantastic sailing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. The floating harbour in the middle of the city is a wonderful focal point and the sailing available reflects the city’s maritime history.” The All Aboard Watersports Centre in Bristol City Docks offers a range of watersports for the whole community. As an RYA Sailability site, its newly refurbished premises are fully accessible for people with disabilities. For youngsters, All Aboard offers sailing and windsurfing sessions for local schools with kids from all backgrounds experiencing the sport. They also run watersports clubs during the holidays and evening clubs for under 18s from 4:30-7pm.
Admittedly sailing around with skyscrapers as a backdrop is a little strange to start with, but it really doesn’t take time to get accustomed and becomes strangely therapeutic. RYA Regional Development Officer Steve Mitchell explains: “Sailing in London is much more accessible than people think; using public transport there’s no more than a 30 minute commute within London to the nearest provider. “London has a fantastic range of sailing venues from inland reservoirs to lakes and docks. There are also plenty of opportunities to join one of the many sailing clubs or take advantage of a ‘pay and play’ session at an RYA Training Centre,” Steve continues. “You don’t even have to own your own dinghy or windsurfer as the majority of clubs are limited in space so offer use of equipment as part of the deal. Mid-week after work activity is popular with many clubs offering short racing or social sailing sessions to meet the demand of those arriving after a day in the office. There are also plenty of clubs and centres offering cruising with
lots of coastal sailing to enjoy.” Shadwell Sailing Club in East London meets every Tuesday evening at 6pm, welcoming everyone from experienced sailors to those wanting to have a go for the very first time. All equipment is provided so instead of being crammed on the tube, you can enjoy a safe but exciting sail on the Thames, all equipment provided. Phil Hammonds, Shadwell SC, explains: “The River Thames allows you the chance to explore and see the City from a different perspective. Sailing on the Thames offers an excellent chance to unwind from your normal hectic life in one of the world’s busiest cities.” There’s also plenty of windsurfing available in London too. BTYC Sailsports, six miles from the centre of London on the Welsh Harp Reservoir, has over 70 members is one of the fastest growing and most successful windsurfing clubs in the region. Thursday evenings provide newcomers with the perfect opportunity to have a go for just £10. With après- windsurf ready to welcome you off the water, who could possibly refuse giving it a go?!

Blinds on Board: How to uplift your interior
Andy Fitzgerald, Managing Director of blind and shading specialists Oceanair Marine, has some advice on transforming your boat living space through the addition of blinds. Here’s what to consider when choosing:
Whether you live aboard or just use your boat occasionally, its interior and your comfort is hugely important. From temperature control to keeping the bugs out of the cabin and having a peaceful night’s sleep - blinds onboard a boat can go a long way in controlling these elements to ensure maximum satisfaction. Oceanair has lately seen a move away from on board curtains to more modern blind systems and technical fabric choices, which offer greater light, temperature and privacy management. harnessing control of light through blinds is one of the keys to individual comfort on board. Whether slightly filtering the light to take the edge off the glare, or achieving 100 per cent blackout to ensure sound sleep after dawn, manipulation of light can create a multitude of moods. Different blinds and fabrics also provide varying levels of privacy, day and night, especially when moored in marinas. Light control is inextricably linked to temperature control; for example, a denser fabric can create a cool environment
An alternative to replacing blinds would be to give them a jolly good clean. No matter what kind of blinds you may have (wooden, roller, vertical slats), on board a boat is a prime place for mould and mildew to collect, as well as dust. Here are a few cleaning hints:

Furthermore, hatch screens help reduce condensation by creating a thermal layer whilst catching drips. When selecting blinds for the marine environment, remember there is increased sunlight and UV exposure, salt, damp and insects, and some fabrics will not withstand these elements and become ‘tired-looking’ quickly or not function efficiently. Keep your Boat dry and well ventilated n Wiping with a sponge soaked in hot water with a squirt of washing-up liquid should remove mould build up. Alternatively a mixture of water and vinegar will clean up most fabrics. n ensure blinds are left fully extended and allow to dry completely before stowing away again. n Use a wet cloth or sponge on wooden blinds - but don’t soak them When dusting slatted blinds use a lambswool duster or anti-static cloth, working across the slats starting at the
top. Do not use plastic dusters which leave the slat statically charged to attract more dust. n Vacuums are not common on boats, but some may have a small handheld ‘dust-buster’ on board which are great for using on blinds – again remember to brush downwards – and if there is a brush head attachment, even better! n Never spray any cleaning product directly onto the blind, always apply using a cloth, and have another at hand to wipe off and dry – so dirt or grease doesn’t get spread around n Always test cleaning solutions on a small sample spot first.

RAMPART CLASSIC MOTORBOATS AT THAMES RALLY FOR its 15th anniversary, the Rampart Owners Club will be appearing at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally taking place’ 18-20 July at Henley. During the 1950s and 60s, the Rampart Boat Building Works on the banks of the River Itchen, near Southampton, was one of the best known motor yacht building yards in England. It had a reputation for building sturdy, quality gentleman’s motorboats that were traditional in style while being fast, well specified and having good sea-keeping abilities. Founder, George Alexander Desty, was born in 1885 to a Sunderland shipwright. George began his career as an apprentice at a small boatyard at Woolston on the River Itchen under his uncle, John West. Desty’s later success in producing wooden motorboats was proven long after the arrival of GRP, when the firm was one of the last yards building wooden motorboats on the south coast of England.

VENTURE CUP – UK LEG ANNOUNCED THE Venture Cup London to Monte Carlo Powerboat Race, which is set to take place 7-9 June, promises to be a race not to be missed, with two great opportunities for UK spectators to take in the action. From 4 June, London’s St Katherine Dock will play host to some 25-30 ocean-class powerboats as they prepare for the start of the race, commencing at the ceremonial Greenwich Meridian Line. The first leg of this two-week 2,750 mile race then ends on the Island of Jersey, crossing a finish line in St Aubin’s Bay before mooring beside the Race Village on St Helier’s Albert Pier.

Cardiff Marina is a 350 berth marina in the heart of Cardiff Bay, which itself is an attractive and approachable environment for boat users of all standards. The Bay provides 200 hectares of freshwater to explore and the Barrage allows 24 hour access to the Bristol Channel. SITUATED on the River Ely on the International Sports Village, Cardiff Marina is perfectly positioned to provide safe, secure and sheltered moorings for motorboats and yachts. The location of the marina, in the Welsh capital city, ensures there are plenty of activities within close proximity to the marina to provide an exciting and dynamic location to moor your vessel. You can sail
over to Mermaid Quay and spend your time exploring the wide range of bars and restaurant or watching a performance at the Millennium Centre, or you may prefer to sail out to Flat Holm Island or spend an afternoon fishing in the Bristol Channel. And, as part of a fully integrated marine company, Cardiff Marina offers berth holders peace of mind by having the onsite knowledge and expertise of its Boatyard.
DEVELOPMENT AND FACILITIES
THERE have been moorings at this location for over 30 years but, in the last seven years, the marina has undergone significant investment and development. Under new management, it has expanded to a sizeable marina, with 350 berths, 110 drystack spaces, as well as hard standing
storage. As a result, a wide variety of yachts and motorboats can be accommodated, although, due to Cardiff Harbour Authority Byelaws long term liveaboards are not permitted at the marina. All berths at Cardiff Marina are Walcon pontoons with water and electricity to every berth.
EXPLORING ASHORE
FOR those stepping ashore in Cardiff looking for a spot of refreshment, the Oystercatcher pub is a five minute walk from the marina across the Pont y Werin bridge. Further along the Penarth side of the River Ely there is Pier 64 and the Custom House. On the Cardiff side of the River there are several restaurants a short walk away. To stock up on provisions, head to Tesco supermarket, which is located just a few minutes away by foot across the Pont y werin footbridge. Morrisons and Asda supermarkets can also be found within walking distance, so you have plenty of choice. For supplies of a more nautical nature, Force 4 Chandlery is situated at the main head office and there’s a boatyard site at Cardiff Marine Village on Penarth Road. If you are heading ashore in search of entertainment, there’s plenty on offer. Neighbouring the marina is Cardiff International White Water Rafting Centre, an Olympic-standard canoe and slalom centre. Cardiff International Pool is only 150m away offering a leisure pool and a 50 metre Olympic Pool. The ice rink is situated next to the pool and is home to the Cardiff
Devils Ice Hockey Team. The construction of the barrage has allowed for the creation of an impressive waterfront complex alongside the freshwater bay known as Mermaid Quay. With pay and display moorings operating in the heart of Mermaid Quay, this area is the perfect place to enjoy numerous restaurants, bars, ice cream parlours, boutique shops, and of course, the magic of theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre. The Red Dragon Centre provides further entertainment for all ages, with a selection of restaurants and bars, a multiscreen cinema, bowling alley and casino. Techniquest is a popular attraction set on the waterfront which has exhibitions, shows and programmes to educate and engage people with science and science-related topics. Other attractions along the waterfront of Cardiff Bay include the Norwegian Church Arts Centre and the Sennedd Building. It’s not all about the city, though. The wider area is rich in wildlife, with Flat Holm Island only five miles from Cardiff and the Cardiff Bay wetlands Reserve both bursting with a wide range of birds and wildlife.

FoR cruising sailors, Cardiff provides a gateway to not only the south Wales coast but also the dramatic shoreline of Somerset and north Devon. Regardless of wind direction, its position at the heart of the Bristol Channel makes Cardiff perfectly situated for endless exploration. Sail south and you will find a plethora of craggy bays and hidden coves that define the northern coastline of Devon. Cream teas, surfing and dramatic cliff top walks await. Wier. The iconic islet of Lundy has held allure for mariners for hundreds of years, thanks in no small part to its dramatic location where the Atlantic meets the inshore waters of the Bristol Channel; approximately 15 miles off the north Devon coast, and just over 60 miles from Cardiff. Today the island is owned by the National Trust, and offers a unique peace and tranquillity plus an abundance of wildlife – including puffins, dolphins and seals. Much of the 3.5 mile long island is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the seas surrounding it make up England’s first Marine Conservation Zone. The island has a small harbour and jetty.
ACCESS
WHEN approaching Cardiff by day, note that the Ranie Buoy (a port hand buoy) marks the extremity of the rocks and sand spit off Lavernock Point. The south Cardiff cardinal buoy makes the southern extremity of the Cardiff Grounds. From a position between the two buoys make a course for the outer Wrach Buoy (West Cardinal Buoy). Follow the Wrach Channel and Buoys into the Cardiff Bay outer Harbour. If you are approaching by night, from the south or west, leave the Ranie Buoy (FL(2)R.5s) to port and the south Cardiff (FLQ(6)+LFL.15s) to starboard. Steer a course for the outer Wrach buoy (FLQ(6)+LFL.15s). You will pick up the sector lights for the Wrach Channel (oc 10s WRG). Stay in the white sector until you pick up the buoyed channel for the Cardiff Bay outer Harbour and the sector light (LFI. WRG5s). Note that vessels coming from Kings Road (Avonmouth) are advised to use the south/west approach. It is important that you keep a careful watch for large vessels coming from Cardiff Docks as they are severely constrained by their draught. Having passed through the locks, you will then find yourself at the Penarth end of Cardiff Bay. To port, you will find the entrance to Penarth Marina, whilst ahead of you lie Ely Peninsula and Cardiff Bay Yacht Club, after which you come to Cardiff Marina. To starboard you will see the Butetown link road over the River Taff, beyond which is Cardiff Yacht Club. Turn further to starboard and you come to St David‘s hotel and spa, the Inner Harbour and visitor pontoons.
Cardiff Marina itself is situated on the River Ely. When navigating along the river you’re advised to keep to the middle wherever possible and at least 8 metres from the riverbank at all times, as there is a step underneath the waterline. on approach to Cardiff Bay, boaters should contact Barrage Control on VHF 18 to request a lock in. You will be advised of the next available lock and given the instruction to enter the outer harbour. Cardiff Marina can be contacted by VHF on Channel M/37. on arrival, if you have not already been assigned a berth visitors are welcome to find a free berth but must then immediately report to the marina office located between pontoons C and D - who will advise you of your berth location. All new boats must report to the marina office on arrival to complete a mooring contract and must have a copy of their insurance document which must be a minimum of third party with salvage to comply with Cardiff Harbour Authority Bye Laws. For those approaching by land, Cardiff Marina is located in the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay off Junction 33 of the M4. If using a sat nav, use the postcode CF11 0SY. For public transport, there is a bus stop just along the road from the marina main gates, with access routes straight into town. Cogan railway station is a short walk across the Pont y Werin footbridge with trains straight into Central Cardiff. The marina is accessed via a security gate with the use of fobs. There is an intercom system on the gate to speak to the marina office.

A buoyant Vintage Somerset cider survival
DESPITE the floods, Somerset’s only cider-brandy distillery kept on going. “We are still heavily flooded and most of the roads to our farm shop are blocked. But we are still in business for ciders and cider brandy via our website, with a daily courier truck that gets through the one road that is passable and the distillery is operating and saving our business.” That was how Julian Temperley of the Somerset Cider Brandy company last month described his survival as floods surrounded his Pass Vale farm, near Martock in the Somerset Levels. The apple orchards were wet but not flooded and the distillery had been working all through the winter months, distilling “until the apple blossom arrives”. This is the only cider farm in Somerset with a licence to distil, granted in 1989, and since 2008 Somerset Cider Brandy has had its own regionally defined, EU-approved AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée). Distilled in Somerset using only Somerset-grown apples, it is the English equivalent of French Calvados. It takes 11 litres of cider to make one bottle of cider brandy. Ageing is done in casks in the farm’s bonded warehouse and ages from three to 20 years are offered at prices ranging from £14.60 per
70cl bottle of three-year-old at 42 per cent abv to £48 for 50cl of the 20-year-old. Other products include the splendid Kingston Black apéritif at 18 per cent, made only from the Kingston Black apple variety as grown on Pass Vale Farm. It’s the English version Pinot de Charente. The colour is rich mahogany, the initial taste sweet, as with Charente, and then comes a dry, long finish. A very reasonable £8.60 for an elegant 50cl square-sided bottle. THE 75ft motor yacht ‘Rum Jungle’ is a familiar sight at major yachting events in the Solent and further afield. Established in 2000 by renowned ocean-racing navigator Hugh Agnew, it has gained an enviable reputation as a top corporate charter yacht serving up impeccable hospitality. The yacht takes its name from the small town of Rum Jungle in Australia’s Northern Territory, founded, they would have us believe, in 1871 when a bullock cart carrying rum to Darwin got bogged down in the middle of nowhere and a week of rum partying ensued before it was rescued. Thus rum-based mixes have become an essential part of the on board drinks list, with ‘Stormy Jungle’, their take on the famous Bermudan ‘Dark and Stormy’ rum and ginger beer, a particular signature drink - so much so that in 2013 Hugh decided to produce his own Rum Jungle rum. The source is Caribbean, selected after extensive hands-on local research, but the exact source is a secret. Not quite the
same as the oh-so-secret recipes for Pimm’s or Benedictine but a little bit of intrigue, nonetheless. The sailing rum market is dominated by global brands like Mount Gay and Pusser’s which
support many sailing regattas around the globe so this newcomer is up against some stiff competition. Rum Jungle, the rum, is interestingly on the cusp between dark and golden, so as to be dark enough for the Stormy Jungle and light enough at 37.5 per cent to not swamp the mixer flavours. With this level of personal attention, it is in essence a boutique rum and, with its fun provenance detailed on the bottle’s back label, makes for an interesting and unusual brand to have on board. At present distribution beyond the yacht is limited to a few bars and specialist shops in the south coast area. A multi-buy of a six-bottle case brings the price per bottle down to £17 collect or £18 delivered, reasonably competitive for a boutique spirit.
