GOLDEN GLOBE RACE PREPARES FOR START
The number of Golden Globe Race entrants stands at 20, representing 13 countries. Professional sailors and adventurers dominate, but they also include an engineer, foreign exchange trader, hydrographer, pilot, tailor and university lecturer. Plans for the Race Village are well advanced and the GGR Race HQ will open in Les Sables d’Olonne on 7 May. The race yachts will be berthed in the central marina and open for public display for two weeks from 16 June when the Race Village opens, until the start on 1 July. Also on public display will be four iconic solo circumnavigation yachts: Suhaili, the yacht that carried Sir Robin Knox-Johnston to victory in the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, together with Bernard Moitessier’s rival entry Joshua, and the

two yachts that pioneered this solo circumnavigation record with one-stop, Sir Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth IV (1966/7) and Lively Lady, sailed by Sir Alec Rose in 1967/8. With the Golden Globe Race start just a few months away, Patrice Carpentier, the well-known French sailor, author and editor of Course au Large magazine, has been appointed Golden Globe Race Director. Patrice, who has been sailing since the age of 12 brings a wealth of experience to this role, having completed five circumnavigations. These include the first two Whitbread Round the World Races and two Vendée Globe solo non-stop races. He also finished second in the 1991 Mini Transat despite suffering a broken mast during the first leg. He competed successfully with standard production yachts in two Route du Rhum races in 1982 and 1990 and was still winning in 2017 with victory in the 2-handed IRC/UNCL championship. All told, Patrice has clocked up more than 300,000 sailing miles and crossed the Atlantic 35 times. Turn to page 6 to read more about Lively Lady. www.goldengloberace.com

GOING LUNA
Two-time America’s Cup-winning skipper Jimmy Spithill is joining Italy’s Luna Rossa syndicate, his former America’s Cup team. It was Jimmy who was at the helm when Luna Rossa lost to Emirates Team New Zealand in the 2007 America’s Cup. He then moved to Oracle Team USA, who are thought unlikely to feature in the next regatta. The other official entry so far is the New York Yacht Club, but there have been rumours of a Chinese team entering the next America’s Cup. Entries for challengers closes on 30 June 2018, with Land Rover BAR expected to announce its entry.
PRINCESS ON TEST
Princess Yachts has been testing the first prototype of the all-new R35, an entirely new class of yacht which is due to launch in September. Princess partnered with BAR Technologies and Pininfarina to create this revolutionary new yacht, which is 35ft, fully carbon fibre, powered with V8 engines and with a top speed of 50 knots. NEW RNLI BERTH
Less than a week after the devastation at Holyhead Marina during Storm Emma, the town’s RNLI lifeboat launched for the first time from her new berth in the inner harbour. The lifeboat was berthed at the temporary location after Holyhead Marina was wrecked by the storms. During the call-out the stricken craft was towed safely to Holyhead’s south quay area, and the lifeboat returned to her temporary berth. Turn the page to read more about Holyhead Marina. rnli.org
SIR ROBIN ATTENDS WORLD PREMIERE Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, winner of the 1968/9 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, shared the Red Carpet with Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz at the world premiere of the film The Mercy. Sir Robin said of this portrayal of the Crowhurst tragedy set during the 1968/9 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race: “I was blown over by the film. I know I knew the story inside out, but the way they had written up the drama, whilst keeping to the facts was really good and the acting was brilliant. Yes the story is inevitably sad, but I thought the producers handled it very well and were sympathetic to the Crowhurst family.” Later, Sir Robin sat down with The Mercy Director James Marsh, Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz to discuss the film and the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. You can watch their conversation online at bit.ly/mercyroundtable.

For the first time sailing is one of the 11 sports to feature in the Invictus Games, which will be held in Sydney from 20 – 27 October. The Invictus Games is an international multi-sport event open to wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans set up by Prince Harry.
The UK Team is being selected, trained and developed by military charity Help for Heroes. RYA Sailability Manager Joff McGill said: “We are delighted that Sailability is able to support Help for Heroes to coordinate Team UK for sailing. “It is a fantastic opportunity
to showcase how inclusive the sport is and we look forward to supporting Team UK as they compete in the finals in Sydney Harbour this October”. The boat classes that will be used for Team UK are the Elliot7 and the Hansa 303. www.invictusgames2018.org
The $93m superyacht, Indian Empress, owned by Indian multimillionaire Vijay Mallya, coowner of the Force India Formula One team, has been impounded in Malta in a dispute over his failure to pay the crew more than $1m in wages. The yacht was impounded in a “maritime lien” which gives the crew claim over the vessel to the value of the unpaid wages. Mallya is on bail after being arrested in London in 2017 over allegations he supported his F1 team with moneylaundered cash. Indian authorities are seeking his extradition.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde I hope you enjoy this packed issue which features boats of all sizes from dinghies to superyachts. When it comes to cars, even if we cannot afford a supercar, we can still admire them and dream of one day owning one. The same can be said of superyachts, especially yachts that have been inspired by supercars and involve some of the biggest names in the automotive world. So, if you like your cars and/or superyachts head over to page 41 and prepare to be amazed. You might need to pop out and buy a lottery ticket to have any chance of owning one, but in the meantime you can admire them. To see a selection of supercars and beautiful yachts in one place you could head to St Katharine Docks for next month’s London On-Water. Back for a fourth year this is sure to be a popular event once again. Looking for events in your local area? This month we have the first instalment of our annual events guide which kicks off, this month, with boating shows, events and festivals from April to June. There is lots happening this month, and so you can start filling those diairies! One person who will no doubt be at a several of those events is James Hardiman, the MD of Ocean Elements and the subject of this issue’s Boating People. Not content with being MD, he is taking on several big races this year including the Solo Fastnet in June. James is also starting a new blog for us sharing what it is like to compete in an offshore solo race series whilst keeping up a busy working and family life. Read his first column on page 22.
In addition to James we are delighted to have the Cruising Association starting a new column this month. As Peta Stuart-Hunt explains, it is the go-to fount of all cruising knowledge. For those who are not already members, head over to page 25 to find out more about this 110-year-old association. Thank you to those of you who got in touch to help identify the mystery boat last month. I am pleased to say that Ken was correct in saying it was Mariquita, a William Fife design built in 1911. Mariquita actually has her own website where you can find out more about her - www.yachtmariquita.co.uk. It appears a new custodian for this amazing boat, which took home the Big Boat Panerai Trophy in 2014, is being sought so that she can start a whole new chapter in her long life. Also starting a new chapter is Holyhead Marina, which was hit by Storm Emma leaving more than 80 boats damaged or destroyed. Sadly it is going to take some time to completely clear up the area with concerns being aired about the environmental impact. You can see the extent of the damage in the photos on this page. The build-up has been long, but the race village for the Golden Globe Race HQ is set to open next month with many events planned leading up to the race on 1 July. Although the start is in France there will be a parade of sail around Falmouth Harbour on 14 June. Let us know if you plan to go along and support the sailors ahead of their epic adventure. ANGLESEY MARINA HIT BY STORM EMMA
These photos were supplied by Jonathan Fox who lost his yacht Mikki Finn in the storm. Images: Jonathan Fox
More than 80 boats were damaged or destroyed when Anglesey’s Holyhead Marina was hit by Storm Emma. The storm’s 70mph gusts whipped up 10ft-high waves in the normally sheltered harbour leaving behind millions of pounds worth of damage. Describing the storm the marina’s owner, Edward Hughes, said: “We have had bigger winds but never witnessed waves this big before.” Following the storm, the Coastguard warned people not to touch flares that may have subsequently washed up on
beaches. A HM Coastguard spokesman explained: “It is not unusual that after a period of bad weather you may find things washing up on beaches and this is certainly the case with the Holyhead Marina incident. Leave it where it is, take photos or make notes about its size, what it looks like and where it is so the experts can decide if it is safe or not. Then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.” Services were also dealing with pollution from polystyrene after the incident in early March. In fact
debris, fuel and polystyrene from damaged floating pontoons was found washed across the coast. Much of the polystyrene, which is not biodegradable, disintegrated making it difficult to clean up leading to concerns about polluting the coast and endangering wildlife. The First Minister Carywn Jones visited the site and promised to “help businesses get back on their feet”. As well as meeting the marina’s owners, he met with representatives from the council and port authorities. holyheadmarina.co.uk
OYSTER FIGHTS BACK Hundreds of jobs have been saved after Oyster Yachts was bailed out of administration by gaming software entrepreneur Richard Hadida. The sale, to new company Richard Hadida Yachting, secures the employment of the retained staff at both Oyster’s Southampton and Wroxham sites. It is believed the company also intends to re-employ as many of Oyster’s previous workforce as possible. “We are delighted to have a concluded a sale of the business, ensuring the recommencement of yacht production at Southampton and Wroxham, together with the opportunities for employment that this will bring,” said Neil Gostelow, partner at KPMG and joint administrator. Last month we reported that Oyster Yachts, based in Southampton, had gone into liquidation despite, in January, the company launching a new Oyster 745 model at the Dusseldorf boat show and reporting a ‘record’ order book of £80m. It is thought the collapse was linked to legal action following the 2015 sinking of Polina Star III. KPMG was brought in as administrator to try to find a buyer for the business. The arrival of Mr Hadida is expected to result in as many as possible of the company’s 420 staff based in Hampshire and Norfolk being re-employed. Hadida said he “fell in love” with the yacht builder after sailing one but made clear his investment in Oyster was “not merely a hobby”. “I believe we must save this great British brand and nurture it for the long term, “ he said. “But it needs to be a sustainable business: hard, quick decisions need to be taken.” These may involve adopting more modern construction techniques such as modular construction to reduce build times. Future plans for Oyster could also include moving into the thriving market for smaller yachts, below its current smallest model, which measures 47ft in length. www.oysteryachts.com

LADY’S RESTORATION NEARS COMPLETION
Entrepreneur and philanthropist Mark Smith has taken the helm of Around and Around, the charity that looks after Sir Alec Rose’s Lively Lady, which is undergoing restoration. The 36ft yacht, with her distinctive pale blue hull, was made famous when Southsea greengrocer Alec Rose completed his single-handed trip around the world in 1968.
Mark, from Old Portsmouth, has become the new chairman of the charity, which looks after the boat on behalf of Portsmouth City Council. The former Royal Navy sailor and businessman will drive forward the renovation project, that will see the vessel restored to her former glory in time for the 50th anniversary of Sir Alec’s epic solo circumnavigation.
Mark said: “It is an honour and a privilege to become the chairman of Around & Around. The yacht is a true icon of the sailing world, but more than that, she is an important part of Portsmouth’s maritime history and our city’s story. “The voyage by Sir Alec showed that so-called ordinary people can do the most extraordinary things. It inspired a generation of young people and sailors to get out on the water and I hope as we approach next year’s important anniversary we can reach the next generation and encourage them to do the same.” In February the historic sailing boat, built in 1948, was moved from the Camber Docks in Portsmouth to the Hayling Yacht Company, which is overseeing the work to repair, refurbish and repaint the vessel by a team of volunteers. Lively Lady has been lifted out of the water and placed under cover to allow an experienced shipwright to oversee the work that will see the
deck replaced, engine refurbished and the wheelhouse rebuilt, before she is repainted in the distinctive sky blue that makes her so recognisable. Already much of the damaged wood has been repaired and replaced, while new keel bolts have been fitted and work has started on the deck substructure. The restoration project is being supported by ocean racing legend Alan Priddy, the founder of Around and Around and outgoing chairman and skipper of Team Britannia. He sailed the yacht around the world in 2006 - 08 with a group of young people and adult volunteers from Portsmouth. Alan said: “I want to wish Mark the very best as he takes the helm of Around and Around and the stewardship of Lively Lady. She is an incredible yacht, which has sailed twice around the world. Our ambition for Lively Lady, once refurbished is to mark the anniversary of Sir Alec’s return 50 years ago and to continue to provide opportunities for young people from Portsmouth and Hampshire to experience sailing.” She will be refloated in time for the celebrations being organised by the charity and local community. It is hoped that these celebrations will include sailing along Southsea seafront recreating the return of Sir Alec, with a member of the Rose family taking the helm. www.livelylady.org
LEXUS SPORT FIRST INTO SANYA YACHT Lexus has confirmed production of its sport yacht concept, which was conceived by Lexus Design as part of the brand’s push into new areas of luxury and active lifestyles. Like the concept craft, the new boat will be engineered by Toyota Marine, and Marquis-Larson will build the production version as a larger 65ft sport fly-bridge cruiser with luxury staterooms below deck and entertaining space for up to 15 guests. The concept boat was a more compact 42ft and had room for eight passengers. Specifications and pricing are to be announced, with sales starting in the second half of 2019. MAJOR EVENT GOES GREENER
Lendy Cowes Week has an impact on the water and on the shoreside with 100,000 people visiting during the regatta. Now Cowes Week Ltd has announced its intention to work towards making the event more sustainable. Working with the event sponsors and four official venues (Cowes Parade, Cowes Yacht Haven, Northwood House and Shepards Wharf), CWL will be raising awareness of sustainability issues and highlighting how we can all help to make a difference, both on and off the water. Some of the initiatives planned for 2018 include installation of more water filling stations for the public and competitors and improved waste recycling around the town. CWL has already made changes at its base, Regatta House, by switching to a sustainably sourced electricity provider, putting a comprehensive recycling programme in place and committing to no single use plastics in Regatta House itself.
The official venues are committed to help reduce the use of polystyrene, Styrofoam and plastic cutlery and are looking into the wider use of reusable drinks cups that were trialled at the main Cowes Yacht Haven Bar in 2017. Banning the use of plastic straws across the event is also a key objective. The official charity, The 1851 Trust, will be inspiring young visitors to Lendy Cowes Week through a series of hands-on sustainability workshops. CWL is also working closely with The Green Blue, the RYA and British Marine’s joint environment initiative, and has signed up to the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas Programme, a voluntary, self-assessment tool that provides a system to benchmark what the environmental footprint is today and set goals for the future. Lendy Cowes Week 2018 takes place from 4 - 11 August. www.lendycowesweek.co.uk Turn to page 28 for more events.

POTTY FOR LOBSTERS The Cruising Association campaign to improve small craft safety by securing the better marking of lobster pots is going from strength to strength. The petition, on the Parliamentary Petitions website, closed with 10,770 signatures. Having successfully passed the 10,000 mark, the government was required to give a written reply. The Cruising Association President, Judith Grimwade, said: “This signals change, and for the better. Government is now ‘looking at areas in which the enforcement of regulations can be enhanced’ but is also open to, and interested in, the identification of other potential solutions.” “We believe we have established that something needs to be done about badly marked gear and that the wider boating
community strongly supports what the CA is trying to do. “ The Cruising Association campaign will continue. In particular, the CA will press for the setting up of a consultative body which brings all of the stakeholders together, including the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations, preferably under the auspices of one of the government agencies. Everyone is being urged to report incidents to the Cruising Association via lobsterpots@theCA.org.uk and to the RYA via their online incident report form. FUTURE OF THE SEA
A report, Future of the Sea, warns that in order to exploit the huge potential of the future marine economy, going forward Britain needs to re-invent its relationship with the sea. Areas of growth such as offshore renewable energy and marine biotechnology need to be developed with, according to the Government Office for Science Foresight, less reliance on established industries such as oil and gas, fishing and shipbuilding. The value of the world’s oceans is set to double to £2.14tn by 2030 but Britain must re-evaluate its ‘blue economy’. For example, Future of the Sea underlines Britain’s expertise in ocean science, with autonomous and robotic vehicles increasingly being used to map the seafloor and understand the marine environment. Britain could take a big share of this market, while deep sea mining of metals on the seafloor and developing additional offshore windfarms could also bring billions to the UK. The report did also include a warning that exploiting the world’s oceans needs to be done sustainably.

PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF Visit Seattle, skippered by 24-year-old British sailor Nikki Henderson, pulled off a sensational victory in Race 8 of the 13 stage Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race, stealing the win from PSP Logistics in the final few miles of the race to Qingdao, China. The Clipper Race competitors have once again proved that it is never over until that finish line is crossed. PSP Logistics, which
had led for eight successive days and were 25nm ahead, succumbed to a wind hole just 30nm from the finish line, allowing Visit Seattle to sneak up on their eastern side to take the win. The current overall race leader, Sanya Serenity Coast, arrived in second place behind Visit Seattle, followed by Liverpool 2018 which completed the podium positions, whilst PSP Logistics continued to be
becalmed in the wind hole it found itself in. The result is a huge boost for Visit Seattle, whose next challenge is racing to its home port of Seattle in the 5,600nm Mighty Pacific Ocean Leg of the race, which set sail on 23 March. The teams will return to Liverpool on 28 July, where one team will be crowned the Clipper 2017-18 Race winners. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

BOAT LICENSING
The Canal and River Trust is letting boaters know the changes it will be making to boat licensing. The changes, to be phased in over five years from April 2019, aim to ensure the financial contribution made by boaters towards the cost of looking after the waterways is spread fairly across the boating community. The headline changes include an additional charge, of up to 20 per cent, to be levied on wider boats, to be phased in over the five years. There will be three pricing bands for boat width in addition to the existing bands for boat length, which remain unchanged. More information: canalrivertrust.org.uk/ national-consultations

Volvo Ocean Race’s Vestas 11th Hour Racing was back in the water in Auckland in early March after being shipped to New Zealand for repairs following a collision with a fishing vessel just before the finish of Leg 4, off Hong Kong. In the aftermath of the accident, nine Chinese fishermen were rescued, but one died. The Vestas 11th Hour Racing crew were not injured, but the VO65 race yacht suffered significant damage to its port bow. Of the incident the team has been informed that investigations by the Hong Kong and mainland China authorities will be closed shortly with no further action to be taken. The team has not raced since the collision, but Vestas 11th Hour Racing rejoined the Volvo Ocean Race for Leg 7 from New Zealand, across the Southern
Ocean, past Cape Horn and into Brazil which began on 18 March. “It has been an amazing effort by all involved to get the boat back in the water,” said skipper Charlie Enright. “The coordination between our shore team, The Boatyard, all the suppliers, the stakeholders... A month ago we said we would be back on the water on this day, and we have stuck to the schedule. It is amazing.” Ahead of the start of Leg 7 MAPFRE stood at the top of the leaderboard followed by Dongfeng Race Team and AkzoNobel with Dee Caffari’s Turn the Tide on Plastic sitting at the bottom. The young TTOP crew had sailed the 6,100nm Leg 6 from Hong Kong to Auckland fighting relentlessly for a podium position, only to have it snatched from them in the final moments. www.volvooceanrace.com
CARIBBEAN 600 The RORC Caribbean 600 has become a ‘must do’ offshore classic. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, the 600 mile race around 11 Caribbean islands is on the bucket list of many serious offshore sailors. George David’s American Maxi Rambler 88 set a new monohull course record of 37 hours 41 minutes and 45 seconds, beating the record set by his previous boat, Rambler 100, in 2011. After setting the best corrected time under IRC, Rambler 88 remained unbeaten, winning the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy. George said: “In 10 years the ‘600 has gone from a handful of boats, to 84 on its tenth anniversary. It is a great race all around; congratulations to the RORC and
everyone involved. We are delighted to have won overall in IRC and better yet to have broken our own record at the same time.” The first boat around the 600 mile course was Peter Aschenbrenner’s 63ft American trimaran Paradox which finished the race in just 37 hours, 5 minutes and 16 seconds to take multihull line honours and beating Rambler 88 to the line. After MOCRA time correction, Paradox also claimed the overall win for the Multihull Class. Visit the event’s website for the full list of results. The 11th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 will start on 18 February 2019. caribbean600.rorc.org
CLEAN & GREENER BOATING
Boat owners know how hard it can be keeping their craft looking pristine and clean. Gary Winter, MD of Cleantogleam, got in touch to tell us about a range of cleaning products. Gary sourced what he considered 10 top cleaning products from around the globe and took them to different chemists in the UK to find out how to make them better. From this came seven cleaning products four exterior and three interior. Boat Wash is an overall exterior clean for a streak-free finish and has been what Gary terms “scientifically engineered” to eliminate surface grime and salt build-up, while at the same time remaining gentle on those all too precious top coats. The Boat Wash was created not only for performance, but also in line with a green ethos and natural ingredients that are not harmful or damaging as Gary explained: “I needed a good boat wash, which was also environmentally friendly, bio-degradable and could have plant extracts in.” Another product containing natural ingredients is the Hard Paste Wax. It gives an ultra-high gloss look to a gelcoat painted surface, specifically enabling durability and protection from all weather systems. Boat Polish, meanwhile, has been developed to restore fibreglass and painted surfaces to a high, super shiny finish. Not forgetting the interior cleaners, along with the grade sponges, all in-one bag for storage and micro-fibre cloth, finishing this boat cleaning range is the deodoriser, which will leave the inside smelling lovely. www.cleantogleam.com

BIGGEST YET
Southampton welcomed its largest container ship yet with the arrival of the 400m long, 59m wide CMA CGM Antoine De Saint Exupery, one of the world’s most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly ships. The ship can carry up to 20,656 containers. THANK you for your responses regarding last month’s query about the identity of this boat. This boat has certainly caught your attention, and it has been confirmed by Chris Leamon and Jim Thorn that it is indeed Mariquita, as suggested last month by Ken. Jim Thom, who was her Captain from late 2003, helped finish the restoration in Hamble and looked after her until the end of 2012, told us: “Mariquita is, as Ken says, a William Fife design, restored by Fairlie Restorations in the Hamble. There were only four 19m International Rule yachts built: two by Fife, one by Nicholson and one by Mylne.
“The owners and crews enjoyed some incredibly tough, close and exciting racing before the Great War and the yachts continued to race, with cut down rigs, in the handicap classes through the 1920s and 1930s before being laid up in mud berths as houseboats. “Only Mariquita remains. After restoration to her original condition - 74ft boom, 52ft spinnaker pole - was completed in early 2004 she was once again campaigned as a racing yacht, handled as she was originally, sails hoisted and trimmed by hand. After 14 years of
spectacular sailing she is now laid up at Lymington, waiting for the right owner, or group of owners, to answer the challenge and bring her back as a competitor on the classic circuit. “She was in the mud in Essex for 60 years and nearly lost to history, so it is a concern to see her heading down that same path again - she really needs some brave knights in shining armour to come and rescue her. “If a buyer did come forward I would be happy to help them and get a team up to speed on the undeniable challenges of
sailing Mariquita - the rewards they will find for themselves! Any takers?” Carl Whitewood from the Mariquita Syndicate added: “Yacht Mariquita was built in 1911 and is often identified as one of William Fife’s favourite yachts. She has enjoyed great success in modern classic racing, after being rescued from a mud berth where she sat for many years and comprehensively rebuilt. Now berthed on the UK’s South Coast, Mariquita is currently looking for a new custodian. Her website can be found at www.yachtmariquita.co.uk.”

FULL MAST AHEAD
SELDÉN Masts Ltd is supplying the new carbon mast and boom for Tracy Edwards’ round the world race yacht Maiden in preparation for her new campaign – The Maiden Factor. Supported by HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, Maiden will once again set sail around the world, but this time will be spreading the word that all girls have potential and the right to an education. Seldén Mast Ltd Managing Director, Steve Norbury, explained: “Maiden’s original spar was a bespoke aluminium spar, the likes of which are not made any more as technology has moved on. To
achieve this level of individual design we use modern composite processes to make a carbon mast.” Technical Director, Andy McCormack added: “Due to Maiden’s age and layout we have had to customise our laminate and reinforcement specifications; working very closely with Marine Results to ensure that we achieve exactly what is required. The original spar was heavily tapered, and the new rig is required to have the same look. The only way that this can be accomplished is to manufacture in carbon with our computer numerically controlled filament winding machine and then paint
in a custom silver finish to give it the same appearance as the original.” The original aesthetic is also required to be maintained on the boom. The original boom was constructed from sheet aluminium – a technique which is not used in modern boom construction – and therefore the boom is also to be made from carbon. Seldén will produce a tailor-made Y-Boom with a tapered outboard end which is in keeping with the previous look. The Y-Boom will also make handling of the mainsail easier for the crew. www.seldenmast.com

FLOOD SCHEME WORK BEGINS ENVIRONMENT Agency contractors have started construction of a new £5 million flood scheme to better protect more than 300 properties in Ryde. The first stage of the project is to build a new outfall pipe from the sea wall in front of the existing pump station across Ryde sands to the marina. This work will result

in the closure of the section of beach from the existing outfall to Ryde Marina. The Environment Agency expects these essential works to be completed in July. Although the children’s play area next to the public toilets will be used as a works compound, it will be replaced at the end of the project.
The second and final stage is the construction of a flood wall around Simeon Street Recreation Ground, Marymead Close and the river boundary of the BT depot. We are told these works are planned to start in June and to be completed by October 2018.

Thousands of dinghy sailing enthusiasts flocked to Alexandra Palace for the 67th RYA Dinghy Show despite the extreme weather that saw heavy snowfall across the country. “It was heart-warming to see the support that the sailing community has shown for the RYA Dinghy Show. We were delighted to welcome just under 8,000 people this year despite the wintery conditions outside,” said RYA Director of Sport Development Alistair Dickson. Hosted for the first time this year by Rio 2016 470 champion and double Olympic medallist, Saskia Clark, and two-time 49er Olympian, Stevie Morrison, the theme was #dinghysailingforlife celebrating a lifetime sport for all. Expert talks on the Suzuki Main Stage and Knowledge Zone attracted
large audiences with speakers including double Olympic medallist and Volvo Ocean Race winning skipper Ian Walker, foiling expert Alan Hillman, All At Sea’s Dougal Henshall and Paralympic Gold medallist Helena Lucas. Visitors also enjoyed the new stages, the Class Association Stage and the Women’s Sailing Hub as well as getting close to members of the British Sailing Team including Olympic Gold medallists Giles Scott and Hannah Mills in Sailor’s Corner. The show also celebrated 100 years of Ian Proctor with a historical exhibition showcasing some of his earliest designs including the Gull, Minisail, Osprey and the Wayfarer. SAILORS AND CYCLISTS UNITE KASKELOT RETURNS TO PLYMOUTH
THE Andrew Simpson Foundation is to unite sailors and cyclists with a brand-new fundraising and cycling event in memory of Olympic Gold medallist and America’s Cup Sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. Bike4Bart will take place on 2 September from Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy,. Cycling inland from the Isle of Portland and the home of the Andrew
Simpson Foundation, the three different route options will head into Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Alongside the cycling event, the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre – Portland will throw its doors open to the public offering a variety of free sailing and water-based activities, culminating in a great fun day for all the family. Bike4Bart
aims to help raise awareness of the work that is carried out by the Andrew Simpson Foundation around the world, and to raise funds, allowing the sailing charity to both continue increasing participation in the sport and improve the lives of disadvantaged young people. www.ukcyclingevents.co.uk/events/bike4-bart-charity-sportive/
LAUNCHING IN CONSTABLE COUNTRY THE River Stour Trust is looking for volunteers to join its team of skippers and crew operating its fleet of electric launches on the River Stour in Suffolk, made famous in John Constable’s paintings. They carry thousands of people every year, from Easter until the end of October, helping the Trust raise vital funds to continue its work. The 21ft launches are, we are told, simple to drive, with smooth, quiet electric motors and maximum speeds of 4mph.
The Trust tells us that anyone who can handle a sailing boat or motorboat will be able to drive one, with full training and familiarisation with the river provided. Or you can join the elite team operating the restored 19th Century River Stour Lighter. This is 50ft long, with two powerful electric drives, and it is a test of skill to manoeuvre this 160-year-old craft through locks, with only inches to spare. The Trust also needs people to look after the shore side of the operations, taking bookings and money, so if you
are not as active as you once were you can still be a part of this worthwhile operation, and get to meet the many visitors who come from around the world to visit Constable Country. www.riverstourtrust.org
PLYMOUTH’S historic Sutton Harbour will be hosting the famous tall ship Kaskelot when it returns to the city in August for a month-long visit. The three-masted barque is one of the largest wooden tall ships still in commission, and will be lowering its gangway for a series of open days where the public are invited to come on board and explore the historic vessel. In addition to hosting open days and film screenings throughout August, Kaskelot will be running workshops and training days for those interested in sailing and the marine industry. Kaskelot was originally built in Denmark in 1948 and worked as a
support vessel for Danish fisheries in the Faroe Islands. More recently the beautiful barque has become famous having appeared in hit Hollywood films and TV dramas such as Cutthroat Island, Longitude and David Copperfield. Jessie Atkinson, Ship’s Manager for Kaskelot, said: “We are very excited to be bringing Kaskelot back to Sutton Harbour. “The ship always receives a fantastic welcome in Plymouth, and we are working on an exciting schedule of events, workshops, screenings and open days for our stay there.” www.facebook.com/suttonharbour www.facebook.com/svkaskelot

Land Rover BAR Academy finished fourth after a disappointing start. The team stole the show on the final day, though, topping the leaderboard in the competitive double points round. The next Act takes place over 24 – 27 May in Italy. In further news, the Academy has an open application process with another big intake of triallists for 2018 narrowed down to just 13 young male and female sailors. Those that make the final cut will become the 2018 intake. They will support the Extreme Sailing Series team to get experience of the professional circuit, and will have the opportunity to sail with the senior team in the TP52 events that Land Rover BAR will contest with Tony Langley’s Gladiator sailing team in 2018. land-rover-bar.americascup.com

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS WATERGRIP PROPELLERS
Suzuki hit the news again with the launch of their new range of propellers at the Yokohama Boat Show. Designed to give even better performance from their outboard motors, the new range of WATERGRIP propellers are available for both the standard, single propeller engines and as dual propellers for the top-of-the-range DF325 and DF350. The new propellers have a redesigned central bush system that is easily interchangeable without the need for a specialist press machine to fit them. The new bushes have been designed to reduce slippage within the hub but still protect the gearbox from propeller impacts. The two flagship models will have their own WATERGRIP dual, counter rotating propellers exhibiting similar benefits. A third series, known as ‘WATERGRIP sport’ will be added, which will be a separate range of propellers aimed to give more stability in turns. Watch out for them appearing in your dealers soon. www.marine.suzuki.co.uk
SELVA GOES TO XS
MOVING WITH THE MOTOR TOTER
With the increase in popularity of using smaller boats, especially inflatables, to explore and launch from more remote locations, portability of the outboard is a big consideration. Small outboards are light enough to carry, but anything over about 10hp can be a struggle, especially on a steep or slippery shore. One answer is to launch using a trailer, but for true portability craft are being
carried deflated or car topped and the engine mounted at the water. The old trick of using a sack truck with a piece of plywood bolted on the uprights has been improved and the Motor Toter is the result. This is an excellent accessory for moving an engine if you are on your own, plus it wheels into the back of the vehicle without having to lift the entire weight of the engine, making the job a breeze.
It is a clever design that keeps the engine at an angle where fuel and oil will not run out while laid down too. As a bonus, it doubles as a handy work stand for working on your motor and, when not being used, it folds in half for ease of storage. The Motor Toter is suitable for outboards up to 55kgs, which means about 40hp in reality and they are available from BHG Marine. I have used one in the past and they really are excellent. www.bhg-marine.co.uk
Selva has two new models in the XS Range of motors: the Kingfish 9.9hp and 15XS. These outboards fit a gap in the Selva XS line-up and utilise the 498cc Kingfish model as their base to create large capacity high torque 9.9hp and 15hp models. These will be ideal for those wanting plenty of load carrying ability at slow revs. At 1,500rpm, these outboards produce approximately 2.5 times the horsepower and torque of similar hp models aimed at the dinghy market, so are ideal for heavier work boats and fishing type craft. They are available for both tiller and remote controls and with manual or electric start and power trim. These new outboards are immediately available through Selva Marine Dealers. www.selvamarine.co.uk

WHAT IS YOUR SAILING BACKGROUND?
Having learnt to sail with my father in Hong Kong, I developed a passion for sailing very early on. By the age of 10, I was taking part in races in my father’s Folkboat (a classic 24 footer) from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Since then I have crewed in two China Sea Races on a three quarter tonner and campaigned a 28ft Impala in Hong Kong.
WHAT DOES THE CLUB HAVE COMING UP THIS YEAR? We have an exciting season ahead featuring a whole host of events including our Keelboat Points Week, Swallow National Championships, RS200 Open Meeting and a brand new 2000 Open meeting, as well as the return of Schools Week and family-favourite, Junior Fortnight. Alongside our sailing, we have a recreational rowing class that gives members the opportunity to enjoy the harbour and see the abundance of wildlife in Chichester. We will be opening our doors to members of the public for a Club Open Day on 6 May.
WHAT DOES THE CLUB OFFER TODAY’S YOUNG SAILORS?
At the heart of Itchenor Sailing Club is our youth development activity. Itchenor has created a junior pathway that allows young sailors to develop and progress from the youth and junior dinghies through to the adult dinghy classes. This is supported by an extensive junior and youth winter training programme that is fully accredited by the RYA. We also run a number of youth events to encourage friendly competition and help young sailors to develop their racing skills.

BRITISH KEELBOAT LEAGUE Entry are now open for the increasingly popular inter-club British Keelboat League 2018.
Images: Sportography
The British Keelboat League returns this summer providing a nationwide interclub competition, bringing the exciting, high-speed race format to new venues and providing even more opportunities for clubs and their members to take part. Now in its third year, the RYA will once again be working with clubs across the country to host the qualifying series where clubs test their skills against each other with the emphasis on running as many 15-minute races in as quick succession as possible. Any RYA affiliated club can enter a crew of four to five sailors to race on a level playing field in matched one-design keelboats against other clubs at one of the five qualifiers planned around the country.
LEAGUE FINAL
The best clubs from each region will receive an invitation to the British Keelboat League Final, hosted by the Royal Thames Yacht Club in Cowes in September where the winner will be crowned. Clubs will also be vying for a
THE
coveted spot in the Sailing Champions League 2018 with the opportunity to race against the top club crews from around Europe. Phil Aspinall, Rear Commodore Sailing at Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, has been involved in the British Keelboat League since its inception in 2015. He shared his thoughts about how the League has impacted the club and what benefits it has brought. “BKL participation not only gave some of our sailors the chance to participate and experience keelboat sailing for the first time and compete against other clubs but has also improved the club’s profile as a keelboat event venue. This will undoubtedly help the participation of our sailors, as they are enhancing skills and can be involved in more activities at the club. “The BKL has become an integral part of our sailing development at the Royal Corinthian. We have hosted a qualifier event as well as participating. It has given great exposure for the Royal Corinthian in our quest to become the premier East Coast venue for dinghy and keelboat racing.”
Mastercla ss
GROWING DEMAND
Phil continued: “The best part of the BKL is the high number of races in a weekend which keeps all competitors involved. Simply put you can expect five boats, 10 teams and more than 20 races in a weekend. “This year Royal Corinthian has invested in five 707 keelboats. Over the last two years competing in the League, we have seen an increase in demand from our club sailors to be able to compete. “This year we are running a club
qualifier before the actual BKL qualifier we are hosting. The new boats will help this and, of course, they will be at the disposal of club members and other
clubs in the region throughout the year – which we see as a real boost to keelboat participation. Hopefully we will go on to the final in September.”
Any club wishing to enter and be involved this year can find details of qualifier events and dates, and how to enter on the RYA website: www.rya.org.uk/racing/keelboat-racing/Pages/British-Keelboat-League.aspx

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH JAMES HARDIMAN, MD OF OCEAN ELEMENTS.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING MD OF OCEAN ELEMENTS?
WHAT OTHER RACES/EVENTS ARE YOU TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR?
I like creating great products and seeing them I am going to try and do as much as my business flourish and bringing new people to our commitments and my lovely family will sport. I love it when my instructors allow. I do not like spending much time teach a 70-year-old how to windsurf away from them, but my plan is to First Boat: or we get a total ‘non-sailor’ do the full offshore race series Laser/Beneteau First 305 staying at one of our beach clubs with the Solo Offshore Racing Age started sailing: 10 into a dinghy for the first time Club. WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU MOST?
I guess the solo sailors like Alex Thompson, Pete Goss, Francois Joyon, Knox Johnson, Gabard… there are so many. Also Jeanne Socrates because she just keeps bouncing back. Many moons ago, Tania Aebi’s account of setting off in a Contessa 26 around the world with no experience got me thinking – hey, why can’t I do that? Then on a local level, some of the SORC guys I race with are pretty inspirational too. They are mainly amateur solo racers but the standard is high. Hats off to Conor (Fogerty) for his stormy OSTAR success.
The SoloFASTNET start in 2016
WHAT IS YOUR SAILING BACKGROUND?
I started sailing at age 10 in Toppers and Lasers, racing around inland lakes near Birmingham. I moved on to yachts, crewing for my father and then bought my own (rather old) yacht in my late 20s. I started shorthanded sailing and then solo sailing quickly followed, and now I have clocked up about 20,000 solo miles, 15,000 of those solo racing. I also race an RS Aero and RS100 when at home in Devon and potter around on a Wayfarer with my kids.
ASIDE FROM SAILING WHAT OTHER SPORTS DO YOU ENJOY TAKING PART IN?
Well, I do like my skiing and snowboarding, both of which my job helps me do quite a lot of. I live in Devon so I also surf quite a bit, and I like to run and keep fit, mainly because it helps me focus at work and retain stamina for my sailing, which tends to include lots of long offshore races with very little sleep.

James Hardiman will be writing a regular blog for All at Sea giving readers a gli se o what it is li e to co ete in an o shore solo race series whilst keeping up a busy working and family life. In my blog I will fill you in with all the highs, the lows and the emotional strains whilst giving an insight into the hard work and attention to detail that goes into a solo offshore race campaign. I will be writing about the big events that I have got lined up this summer, for which my physical training and boat prep started in earnest in January. I am an amateur solo sailor with seven years’ solo racing experience and 15,000 solo miles.
I will be racing against some of the best and most experienced Corinthian (and professional) offshore solo sailors in the UK and France; which is a tough gig in itself, but no less than trying to juggle sailing with my family and business commitments in London, France, Greece and Austria. Even on paper it sounds like a challenge. I have been sailing boats and racing dinghies ever since my early school days. My pathway
into solo sailing was paved by the dreaded admin of having to organise crew for racing, and that was 11 years ago. Now I race the Ocean Elements race yacht whenever I can and for my ‘downtime’ I like to race an RS100 and an Aero at North Devon Yacht Club in Instow. Going out on a yacht, solo, for the first time is always a daunting task. So I began by picking the calmest days to venture out in my J109 and my
confidence quickly grew. I then hooked up with SORC a couple of years later and I have been racing with a great bunch of solo sailors for about six years on and off. Now I am properly hooked! Like most solo sailors you will meet, the interest is in the challenge. Little compares to the feeling of achievement at having ‘done it all yourself’ whilst often beating fully crewed boats in the running. As a one-man navigator, driver, bowman, trimmer, cook
and general dogsbody it is easy to see where the satisfaction comes from. Having now successfully completed some big shorthanded and solo races like the AZAB, SoloFASTNET, countless crosschannel races, races to Ireland and various inshore/offshore series, I am racking up the miles but never bored. With all my challenges ahead, this season is not starting so easily for me. At the end of last
year, with the first race of the season a little over three months away, I realised I had three very major hurdles to overcome: 1) I am (still) recovering from major shoulder surgery 2) I have to set up and learn a new boat 3) And did I mention? I actually have no boat for 2018! Do not miss next month when James will be discussing those hurdles in greater detail.

Image: Cruising Association
“Whether you want to circle the globe or just enjoy the satisfaction of navigating yourself, friends and family safely and enjoyably from one place to another, I commend the Cruising Association to you.” Sir Robin Knox-Johnston CBE RD - Patron
THE CA’S KEY OBJECTIVES ARE:
n To make information about cruising available to its members n To advance the understanding of safe navigation and seamanship and all the skills necessary for cruising in all types of leisure craft n To promote and protect the sport of cruising in leisure craft n To promote the preservation and protection of harbours, navigational facilities, estuaries, coasts and their environs n To be a centre of excellence for the support of cruising activities
M
ore often than not referred to simply as ‘the CA’, the Cruising Association is a mutually supportive not-forprofit association that is 100 per cent dedicated to those who cruise on small boats - whether sail or motor - and its extraordinary mass of first-hand information, collected and shared by its members, is of unequalled quality, quantity, breadth and relevance. CA membership now exceeds 6,000, all supported by a small team of dedicated staff based at its HQ in Limehouse Basin in London. The CA is THE information hub and is all about its members sharing their experiences, knowledge and fun to get the most out of their cruising, whether it be around the UK’s coastline or further afield. Every possible communication platform is used to ensure that this vast array of knowledge is imparted online, at rallies, seminars and social events around the UK and globally.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968/69, is a Patron of the Cruising Association. Image: Beryl Chalmers
We will delve a little deeper into this information resource in another issue and also plan to periodically share some CA cruising experiences to help whet your appetite for this increasingly popular pastime. The CA provides a huge number of member benefits and discounts, services, information, help and advice to its members worldwide. Founded in 1908 to specifically meet the needs of cruising sailors, the CA has been a favourite port of call for many of the great and best-known names in sailing.
DID YOU KNOW?
The CA’s Regulations and Technical Services Committee is widely consulted on matters of safety and concern to cruising boaters. Their work on issues such as Red Diesel, legislation affecting cruising in Greece and Croatia, for example, in addition to the campaign for improving safety at sea by clearer marking of static fishing gear, benefits not only CA members, but the cruising community.
WHY JOIN?
Cruising enthusiasts join the CA for many reasons. Some join for one thing and discover many others. There is access to online and offline information and advice about cruising in small boats. This includes 16,000 member-only pages on the CA website encompassing just about everything you ever need to know. However, if you cannot find what you are looking for, ask a question on the member-only forums and someone will have the answer. In addition there is an extensive lecture and social activity calendar. For example, local sections around the UK organise cruises, lectures, meetings, discussions and social activities throughout the year. Cruising area sections for the Baltic, Biscay, the Mediterranean, and more offer specific support and information to those who cruise, or would like to cruise, those waters. In fact there is a worldwide network of Local Representatives providing assistance and information.
The CA publishes an Almanac covering the whole of the British Isles and Atlantic seaboard of Europe and has local representatives all over the world. The network of Cruising Sections, corresponding to popular cruising areas offer knowledge, support and guidance about these areas. CA Cruising Sections cover the Mediterranean, Baltic, Biscay, Celtic, Channel, European Inland Waterways, North Sea and Blue Water areas. The UK Regional Sections offer lectures, meetings and parties in the winter, and
rallies, barbeques and other social events in the summer. The sharing of information is the lifeblood of the Association and is encouraged at all times. Next time we will look more closely at how the CA is set up to suit its members’ needs wherever they are in the world and we will take a closer look at its information resources, lying at the heart of the CA’s day-to-day activity. You can find out more about joining the Cruising Association by visiting its website: www.theca.org.uk/join

Located on the Turkish coast where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet, Sarigerme is home to an array of stunning white-sand beaches and unforgettable underwater adventures. From well-preserved shipwrecks to shallow reefs with schools of barracuda and loggerhead turtles, the crystal clear warm waters offer a number of dive sites. Fun dives and courses are available to book, while snorkelling tours provide a tranquil introduction to the area’s aquatic exploration. The region has its own diving centre which draws many diving enthusiasts to the area. SAILING IN CROATIA
Croatia offers so much to sailors with more than 1,000 islands off the coast with many marinas, harbours and anchorages. The steady breezes make this a popular area for sailing, especially between May and September. There are the Dalmatian islands such as Hvar, Viz and Korcula, while in the Kvarner Gulf the islands of Mali, Losing and Rab are waiting to be discovered. Nautilus Yachting tell us the marinas and medieval towns offer a choice of restaurants and bars,
BAHAMAS CALLING
The Exumas are an off-the-beaten-path cruising wonderland in the Out Islands of the Bahamas. Nestled just 35 miles southeast of Nassau’s international travel hub, the 120-mile long vertical archipelago is comprised of 365 islands and cays. The exotic Exumas chain harbours some of the most unspoiled pieces of paradise in the Caribbean, most of which can only be accessed by boat. The Moorings base of operations is located in Nassau, with direct flights operated by British Airways from London Heathrow Airport. Exumas charter holidays are available aboard sailing, power and all-inclusive crewed yachts. www.moorings.co.uk
LOCH NESS ADVENTURE
Here is a Scottish youth trip from Tall Ships Adventures for ages 12 – 15, with no sailing experience needed. Travellers will take in the spectacular scenery and the beautiful inland lochs of Loch Oich and Loch Lochy before arriving in Loch Ness where the boat will spend the night giving young sailors the chance to spot Nessie. It is a great opportunity to build sailing knowledge whilst having fun and making friends. Those taking part will be involved with all aspects of sailing the yacht from looking after the boat to cooking and cleaning. 30 June – 4 July £459 (bursary available up to £139) tallships.org

but expect to pay marina fees. For a quieter evening you could try a secluded bay or small harbour and enjoy a meal at one of the many traditional restaurants. For bareboat yacht charter or flotilla sailing in Croatia the skipper must have RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate or RYA ICC and one member of the crew should have a VHF licence. Nautilus Yachting’s top three Croatia picks are Dubrovnik yacht charter, Trogir flotilla and Pula yacht charter. www.nautilusyachting.com
CLUB MAYOTTE
Ocean Elements got in touch to tell us about the opening of Club Mayotte Biscarosse in south west France. It is a five star lakeside campsite with private beach, sailing, watersports centre, pools, mountain biking and much more. You can try out stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking (no need to hire a board or kayak as these are included with your booking), water skiing, wake-boarding, kite-surfing, dinghy and catamaran sailing. When you are not enjoying the water, grab your mountain bike (four bikes are included with your booking) and explore the beautiful scenery and surrounding area. You can even book in for a guided bike tour. Kids will love this family-friendly club, which has a water park, four outdoor pools and an adventure park. The kids club is open daily, giving grown-ups some well deserved time off. There is an on-site wellness centre with a sauna, jacuzzi, gym, yoga and aqua fitness classes. They open for business in May, just in time for half-term. The weather by then is already warm as is the water temperature as Lake Sanguinet is one of the largest warm water lakes in France. You can book for seven or 14 nights in one of their mobile homes. www.oceanelements.co.uk

NELSON’S HISTORIC OTHER DOCKYARD
“In just a few a few decades, use of Nelson’s Dockyard declined until, in 1889, it was closed for Navy use.”
Today, English Harbour is the perfect Caribbean watering hole but in the time of Lord Nelson it was a hot, hazy, humid and hazardous hell hole
Leaving the shores of Britain behind there is a dockyard in the Caribbean, with an incredible history, that continues to welcome visitors from around the world. Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.
W
ith its twin centrepieces of the updated Mary Rose Museum and Nelson’s Victory, Portsmouth Dockyard has continued to enhance its claim as ‘the’ place with a nautical flavour to visit. In addition, the Historic Dockyard gives the visitor a fascinating insight into the skills that went into the boatbuilding, sailmaking and associated trades that were all necessary to keep a warship of the day in fighting trim. Portsmouth may well have been the ‘home’ of the Royal Navy, but as Britain’s influence and trade grew on a global basis, so too grew the need to keep ships on station far away from home waters. So it was that a hundred years or so before the final showdown at Trafalgar, the Royal Navy was fully committed to a struggle for naval supremacy in the warm and sunny waters of the Caribbean. With the West Indies a rich source of sugar and spices, control of the trade routes back to the growing markets in Europe were being eagerly contested by the navies of France, Portugal, Spain and the United States, as well as the ships of the Royal Navy. CAREENING SHIPS Today the Caribbean may be a holiday hotspot, but the 18th century warships needed a great deal of support that would focus on a secure, deep water harbour, where crews could rest whilst their ships were provisioned and act as a

safe refuge during the violent months of the hurricane season. The chosen location was a wellknown retreat on the island of Antigua. By 1743, under the leadership of Commander Knowles, a fully equipped dockyard was established in what was known as English Harbour. Later on, an up and coming Captain was given temporary command of the Leeward Island station and as his fame grew, the area became known as Nelson’s Dockyard. One of the key functions of the dockyard was the careening of the ships, heeling them over to remove the fast growing underwater growth from the hulls. This was a major undertaking that started with the ships being stripped of every single item on board. They were then winched over on to their bilges, exposing one side of the bottom of the boat. When this had been scrapped clean and tarred, the hull was righted, then turned around and pulled over to expose the other side of the hull. The ship could then be refloated, allowing all of the removed items to be replaced, making the ship ready for service. For a large ship of the line, the careening process could take up to six months of back-breaking work in the stifling heat of the Caribbean sun. DEADLY CONDITIONS It has long been known that life for a seaman on board a ship of the line was unremittingly harsh and often brutal, but even this pales against the
Navy itself. As with the sailors on the Navy ships, the workers were given their ‘tots’, a daily helping of rum, a liquor that was easily available in the area. However, the dockyard workers were given an incredible spirit, 140 proof rum that was served to them in lead jars. The rum itself was already contaminated as much of the local distillation process used lead piping and the warm, high proof alcohol quickly started to leech the lead into the rum. Consumption of this lethal cocktail soon manifested itself in the dreaded scourge of ‘dry belly’, a classic symptom of lead poisoning and one of the great complaints amongst the workers. Relief came from drinking yet more rum, making the sufferer sluggish and lethargic, whilst leaving them dangerously exposed to the ever present dangers of lurking local disease. The situation was even worse for the workers, as a high wall had been built around the landward side of the Dockyard. Any attempt at escape was normally treated as a capital offense, condemning the workers to one of a number of their inevitable fates.
Although some of the Officer accommodation was more luxurious, the tropical diseases were no respecter of rank. Image: David Henshall
treatment of the dockyard workers. Their lifespan could often be measured in single figures, with many workers dying before their fortieth birthday. It was not just the near slave labour conditions, nor the poor rations they were given, but in the heat and humidity,
tropical diseases were rife with little chance of a cure. It was not just the natural conditions that were breaking down the health of the work force, for we now know that they were being unwittingly, but systematically, poisoned by the Royal
DOCKYARD IN DECLINE As Britain moved into the Victorian era, an extended period of peace saw the need for the maintenance of a frontline fleet in the Caribbean recede, whilst at the same time the Royal Navy was rapidly replacing the days of square sail with the driving power of steam. Ships were no longer careened, but dry docked, which meant a return to the UK. In just a few a few decades, use of Nelson’s Dockyard declined until, in 1889, it was closed for Navy use. The facilities had long fallen into disrepair until the early 1950s, when worked started to restore it to much of its earlier glory. Nelson’s Dockyard re-opened as an Historic Maritime Museum, whilst the harbour itself has become a superb modern marina. During the now famous Antigua Sailing Week, held in late April/ early May, it will be full to capacity with yachts that are all enjoying the very best of Caribbean hospitality ashore and great sailing afloat. Yet a free afternoon can be wonderfully spent ashore, visiting the restored buildings and museum that are now the testament to the darker days of Nelson’s other dockyard.

f you are on the lookout for something completely different, whether you are bored of the gym and want some outdoor health and fitness, are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, need something to switch your brain off from everyday life or simply want a sociable new activity you can enjoy with your partner or family, pop down to your local sailing club or centre during Push The Boat Out and have a go.
GOOD FOR CLUBS TOO
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Throughout May, Push the Boat Out 2018 promises even more opportunities for people of all ages to discover the wonderful world of sailing and windsurfing. Last year more than 30,000 people got out on the water at venues up and down the country and over 7,500 signed up for more activities, with many becoming members of their local clubs. No matter what your experience, if you turn up to a Push the Boat Out taster session you will get the chance to sail or windsurf under the watchful eye of an experienced sailor or instructor. If you are a beginner they will show you the ropes and tell you what you need to get going. They make everything easy to understand and get you ready to have a go. There is no need to worry about the equipment; everything needed is provided by the venue including a buoyancy aid or lifejacket. All you need to do is turn up with some warm clothes, a pair of old shoes and a waterproof jacket in case it rains. “Many people do not know about the opportunities that are available in their local area to get out on the water and try sailing or windsurfing, or they may think it is too expensive or they need their own equipment. Push the Boat Out aims to prove this is not the case,” explained RYA Director of Sport Development Alistair Dickson.
ALL AGES WELCOME
The beauty of Push the Boat Out is that the events are open to people of all ages and abilities. Jean Hughes is 86 and was invited by friends to Shropshire Sailing Club’s free Push the Boat Out open day last May. She loved her sailing tasters so much she signed up for a two-day RYA Start Sailing course, spending the rest of her summer Saturday’s learning the ropes and improving her skills. Her only previous sailing experience
came when her family brought a small dinghy which they put on the roof of the car and took to Bala Lake to try out. However that attempt did not go to plan and they had to row the boat back to shore. Jean admits her experience this year has been a little more successful. “Learning to sail was on my bucket list. I have always enjoyed new challenges and thought sailing would open up a new world of experiences. It is certainly living up to my expectations and I am really enjoying getting out on the water, especially being able to ‘lean out’ when going fast! “I have gone to the club on Saturdays when possible and found the people there very friendly. I am so thankful God has given me good health so that I have been able to try this with help and
encouragement from everyone at the sailing club.” Nina Harrison, who lives in Dunblane, also started to sail at a Push the Boat Out Open Day in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Although she had no previous sailing experience the 11-year-old got bitten by the bug so quickly she spent the rest of the year taking part in junior training at her club. She made such rapid progress she attended her first RYA Scotland Zone Championships at the end of September and has since taken part
in IOCA training at her local club and two RYA winter academies. Nina said: “I really enjoy learning and sailing in high winds. I even sailed in the tail of Hurricane Irma, which was the highlight of my week and an amazing experience. One of my favourite things to do out on the water is hiking and racing because it is always pushing you to your limits. “I think if I keep up my hard work I will be able to get on to the British team as sailing is my new passion. If I had it my way I would spend all my time on the water practicing.”
Sailing has benefitted from significant investment from the RYA and Sport England in the past four years. Many clubs now have excellent, accessible clubhouse facilities, which include comfortable lounges, up-to-date changing areas and rooms dedicated to learning to sail and knowledge improvement. Each year the number of clubs taking part in Push the Boat Out continues to grow resulting in thousands of people signing up to become members of their local sailing venues. Marconi Sailing Club in Essex was one of the venues that opened its doors and welcomed hundreds of people to enjoy a day of windsurfing, sailing and plenty of activities for the whole family. Graham Cross, one of the club’s Rear Commodores, said: “We took part in Push the Boat Out to attract new members, raise the profile of our club and bring all our members together as one team. “With a safety boat team keeping a watchful eye, people of all ages were able to try sailing in a range of boats and windsurfing with instructors and also discover the facilities and lifestyle that the sailing club offers. Since Push the Boat Out Marconi Sailing Club signed 25 new family memberships. “It went amazingly well. We could not quite believe how many people came through the gate. We took around 130 people out on to the water – a record for us – and many of them went out two or three times, meaning we did well over 200 trips, which was phenomenal,” Graham concluded.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Whether you are looking to get started, already a pro sailor looking to join a club or you want to give your kids the chance to have a go themselves, it could not be easier to get involved in Push the Boat Out. The best news is that many Push the Boat Out events are free or very low cost so it will not break the bank. Find everything you need to know about Push the Boat Out this May and visit www.rya.org.uk/PTBO.

ater ski racing is the fastest form of skiing there is. It really gets your adrenaline going as you race against other skiers that can be right by your side at times. In a team, there is a skier, plus two crew in the boat. Each of the boat crew plays a vital part in the team as they race against their opponents to gain maximum points. The observer keeps a close eye on the skier, relaying signals to the driver, ensuring the skier is skiing to his/her maximum ability, but also ensuring that they do not take a fall and lose vital time in the race. They are also keeping a close eye on the competition, ensuring the driver is kept up-to-date with the situation. This class is for very experienced skiers and drivers. Formula 2 is up to a single 300hp engine and Formula 3 is up to a standard 150hp engine. The ladies, masters and juniors’ race time is 25 minutes. Even children as young as eight get their own race and competition can be fierce and is often nail biting to watch as they battle it out.

The national racing takes competitors to showcase places such as Torquay, Saltash, Cardiff Bay, Kings Lynn, Weston-Super-Mare and Hunstanton. Regional racing plays an important part in the South West of England and some exciting racing can be seen in Combwich, Weston-Super-Mare and Torquay. This enables teams to race locally in a more relaxed environment. Races are shorter, so it opens the competition out to less experienced skiers and teams. The South West has a strong presence in the sport with many skiers hoping to secure places for the European Championships in 2018 and the World Championships in 2019. GIVE US A SQUID

INFLATABLE MOTOR CANOES
As Simon Everett explains, squid are overlooked around our shores, but are well worth catching.
The SpearFish 15 has a long, slim hull which is much more efficient and easily-driven than conventional inflatables. That means less power to plane, so they can be used with small, lightweight outboards (which are cheaper to buy and run, and easier to transport and store). The efficient shape also makes SpearFish good to row, and an ideal candidate for smooth - near-silent, pollution-free - electric propulsion. They are highly practical boats, and great fun to use: owners love them! And when it’s time to go home they roll up to fit in your car boot, so there’s no hassle with trailers or roof racks.
S
quid are one of the most prolific ‘fish’ in the sea, yet here in the UK not so many people bother to fish for them. On the continent, especially the western Mediterranean countries, they are one of the most popular targets for rod and line anglers fishing from small boats or off harbour walls. There are even charter boats that operate squid trips, just like our tourist charter boats offer mackerel trips. The reason is, of course, because they are plentiful but also extremely tasty. SQUID RUNS There are two main runs of squid in the year, mostly along the south coast, but also in parts of Wales where the Gulf Stream is present there will be squid in plentiful supply and can be caught right through the summer over suitable ground. The spring run starts about the beginning of April and extends through to the end of May. During that period the first squid will be caught off Cornwall and gradually work their way along the south coast so that by the middle of April they are found in numbers off Brighton and as far east as Folkestone. The autumn run is a reversal and in October the squid head west, and during the winter they can be caught around the area that surrounds The Lizard. CATCHING TIPS At night squid come very close inshore so they can be caught off harbour walls, pontoons or rocky promontories. Small boats can catch loads within 100 yards of the harbour. Water 10ft deep is enough for night time, but during the day they will be a bit deeper; about 35ft down to as deep as you like. Squid will be encountered over banks of shingle, broken ground and against rock ledges at the start of a reef, even over the reef in deeper water (30ft or so). When the run is in full swing they will be found in great shoals, and using a string of jigs can result in multiple captures, plus by covering more of the water column you can locate them more easily.
Squid are proper predators and they will follow the shoals of baitfish, so your fish finder will be useful in finding them. Locate the shoals of sprats, sandeels or brit and the squid will not be far away, on the fringe of the baitfish shoals. Mackerel and herring will also be preyed upon by the bigger squid, some of which grow to 4kgs or 5kgs, although 2kgs is the average sort of size. SQUID GEAR You do not need any special outfits to fish for squid. The continentals make special squid jigging rods that have a much softer action so you do not bump the squid off, otherwise they use handlines for even more sensitive feel and direct control of the jigs. Provided you play the squid gently and just maintain steady pressure they will stay on the barbless hooks of the squid jig. If you try to play a squid too hard, or pump the rod, you will shake many of them off. Simply hold the rod up and steadily reel in to bring the squid to the surface. For decent sized squid it is worth using a landing net; that way you can hold the captured squid over the side while it jettisons its ink. Be cautious of bringing hooked squid in straight away to avoid them inking all over you and the boat as it creates a filthy mess. Yamashita make the best squid jigs, followed closely by YoZuri, Tronixpro and Lineaffe. YoZuri and Tronixpro make jigs with extra spikes on the back of the lure and these do increase the hook up rate, especially when the squid are being a bit finicky. The method is very simple, you just lower the rig to the bottom and then gently lift and lower the rod tip, with occasional jerks to put life into the jigs. At night squid will come higher in the water and, fishing with a light spinning rod and just one jig attached directly to the line, cast out, allow the squid jig to sink and then work it back in exaggerated sweeps with the rod. Once you feel the resistance keep the pressure on for the entire retrieve. I am sure once you have tried it, you will come to love the fascinating fishing that squid provides and it is a great way of obtaining fresh food.

THE ADLARD COLES BOOK OF MEDITERRANEAN CRUISING BY: ROD HEIKELL
THE FOILING DINGHY BOOK BY: ALAN HILLMAN
THE SEA TAKES NO PRISONERS Offshore vo ages in an o en dingh Peter Clutterbuck | £14.99 This is a classic real-life story of derring do on the high seas, complete with extreme risk, lastminute ingenuity and many near-misses. Beginning in the 1960s, this book tells of the real life adventures of the author as a boy – a time of boarding schools, long holidays and an unbelievable (to many of today’s parents) amount of freedom and danger. Encouraged by his parents to become more independent and self-sufficient, Peter decided to see how far he could get in his family’s small open dinghy Calypso. Aged 16 he spent a winter restoring her, before pootling straight out into a force 7 gale and very nearly capsizing, after which he headed back to land to plan even more extreme adventures. Calypso was a Wayfarer, a small (16ft) and very popular class of open dinghy; a boat designed for pottering around coastlines and estuaries. But along with the occasional brave crewmate, Peter managed to sail her across the Channel, through the Bay of Biscay, down the French canals and into the Mediterranean, then up into the North Sea and the Baltic to Oslo, living aboard for three months at a time. He survived huge waves, nine rudder breakages in heavy seas, dismasting, capsizes and hallucinations caused by sleep deprivation. He also managed it on a tiny budget.

cer at the RYA Dinghy Show presented by Suzuki in association with Yachts & Yachting and Gill. Having clinched first place by achieving the Gold Award, they received the competition’s £500 top prize along with their certificate of congratulations. Aberdeen University Sailing Club took second place with a Silver Award and a £250 prize and in third place was Swansea University Sailing Club who achieved the Bronze Award and a £100 prize.
To recognise the achievements of the winning clubs, certificates were presented to the Sustainability Officer of each club that achieved either the bronze, silver or gold award. Their role was to organise, encourage and lead their club through the challenge to successfully complete a number of sustainable boating actions. At each achievement level (bronze, silver and gold) a number of sustainable actions had to be achieved and evidenced by competing university sailing clubs. These included performing an environmental audit of their sailing venue to identify and improve areas that can be made more sustainable, ensuring all their members use reusable water bottles as opposed to one-use plastic bottles, installing an oil/fuel spill kit at their sailing venue to clean up accidental spills when refueling and demonstrating ‘check, clean and dry’ best practice to minimise the spread of alien species around UK waters.
NEXT YEAR’S CHALLENGE

SILENT BUT DEADLY CUT OUT AND KEEP C Anthony Purnell explores the hidden dangers of carbon monoxide.
arbon Monoxide is hard to detect without specific equipment as it is an odourless, tasteless and colourless gas that is formed with the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels like LPG, Butane, Propane, petrol and diesel as well as other solid fuels. It is highly toxic and roughly the same weight as air, so it mixes readily in a cabin space, for example. Your stove or oven might give you a clue that you are producing CO when it burns with a yellowish flame instead of a bright blue one. Faulty gas cookers, ovens, generators and an insecure or blocked exhaust pipe from your boat’s engines are all potential sources of this deadly gas. An approved CO detector with an audible alarm, not the black spot ones, are the best way to alert you of its presence. CO detectors are different to vapour detectors that are used to detect LPG.
Fit a CO detector that is suitable for marine use and meets the British Safety Standards.
PREVENTION & DETECTION
Paying particular attention to potential sources of CO could save your life. A few sensible steps such as checking the cabin vents for blockages and the buildup of spiders’ webs and debris can reduce the risks, but it is still important to purchase an approved CO detector (BS EN 50291-2:2010 for caravans and boats). Early detection can prevent people suffering the toxic effects of this deadly gas and, according to London Fire Brigade’s website, symptoms can include: headaches, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, confusion, breathlessness,
WHAT TO DO
Having all your hatches closed at sea makes sense especially if there is a moderate swell but this increases the danger from CO. If CO is detected, you cannot turn the engines off if this is your only means of propulsion or you will be adrift, and if you cannot anchor because of deep water what would you do?
The Coastguard advise that if the CO detectors actuate in this scenario then you should contact them on VHF Radio Channel 16 and tell them of the situation, your location and any medical symptoms. This is especially important if members of the crew or the skipper are suffering from the effects of this noxious gas.

You may think calling the Fire Service is a bit over the top but they will have detection and monitoring equipment and will probably use breathing apparatus to deploy it and advise you if it is safe to go back aboard. Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue advises not to ventilate but to evacuate your vessel safely. This is because you will breathe in more of the toxic atmosphere than necessary and the Fire Service detection and monitoring equipment will work better to locate the source and determine concentration levels.
stomach pain, collapse and a loss of consciousness. Casualties of CO poisoning are often described as looking flushed red in the face. This red flushing of the skin is caused by CO binding with a normal and essential molecule used within the body for respiration known as oxy-haemoglobin. People can suffer mild effects and put the symptoms down to something else. One tell-tale sign, though, is when you are away from your boat you begin to feel better. Carbon monoxide forms a toxic molecule within your body known as carboxy-haemoglobin via your lungs. Carboxy-haemoglobin is formed easier than the essential oxy-haemoglobin due to its chemical properties (a triple bond between carbon and oxygen). This reduces the body’s ability to transport oxygen from the lungs to your tissues and vital organs. In acute cases of CO poisoning this process can be reversed by removing the casualty to fresh air or by administrating oxygen in a safe environment, but the ambulance and fire service should be called in any case of suspected poisoning. Modern car emissions have been improved so much that it is virtually impossible to die from CO poisoning alone. However until the government introduces a scrappage scheme for boats that encourages owners to scrap their old engines for new ones it is likely that we will continue to see smokey old engines on our waters.
Many people are unaware that this gas has a able properties too if it is allowed to build up to dangerously high levels.
SAFETY TIPS
n Consider removing the alarm from a winterised boat because long periods of sub-zero temperatures may affect its sensor and battery. n All cabins with a fuel burning appliance should have a CO alarm fitted. n See the BSS website for the current list of CO alarm models suited for boat use. Source: Boat Safety Scheme
BOATCOSAFE
Last month the BoatCOSafe campaign launched to highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide. A petition, which is available to sign from their website, is asking parliament to make having a CO alarm mandatory on inland waterways. They have until 3 July to get 10,000 signatures at which point the government will have to respond. BoatCOSafe is encouraging people to check that any enclosed boat they are on has an installed and working CO alarm. With the sailing season and the warm weather just around the corner, it is very important to do these checks in advance. boatcosafe.uk Thanks to The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (Hazmat Team) and the Boat Safety Scheme for their information guidance and advice. WATER SUPER POWERS Supercars are the playthings of the rich and famous, so what could be better than a powerboat inspired by their favourite model? Words: www.carbuyer.co.uk The eight-seat Aston Martin AM37 has been designed to be ‘the ultimate day cruiser’ and features two Mercury 430bhp engines, for a top speed of 57mph. Its carbon fibre, leather and metallic trim is actually inspired by Aston Martin’s supercar range. The Beneteau Sea Drive Concept has a dashboard familiar to any Peugeot owners. The boat has Peugeot’s i-Cockpit controls, including a smaller steering wheel for “more agile handling” and the same kind of toggle switches used in the Peugeot 3008 SUV. Some of the materials are based on the firm’s GT trim levels including leather, copper top-stitching and chrome and satin accents.
Designed to carry up to 11 people in airconditioned comfort, this speed boat is a joint effort of Sacs, Fiat, Martini and Lancia. A RIB design, the Lancia di Lancia has a fibreglass hull and an electric softtop – ideal for keeping out a 60mph breeze.
The Lexus LFA-inspired Sport Yacht Concept boasts a stunning carbonfibre-reinforced plastic hull and upper deck, for a seamless design. It is powered by two 5.0-litre Lexus V8 engines, for a total of 880bhp. You may remember the bright yellow Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, but you probably did not know there was also a floating tribute to it. The collaboration between AMG and Cigarette Racing bore this zero-emission powerboat using 12 motors from the electric supercar, for a total of 2,200hp.
You may know the name Henrik Fisker from the Tesla-rivalling electric supercar brand, but Fisker has also partnered with Italian yacht-builder Benetti to create a 50m superyacht. The stunning result features a jacuzzi, bars, cinema room and gym.
The Aston Martin Project Neptune is a three-person submarine aimed at rich superyacht owners. If getting in the water with a snorkel is not your cup of tea, a personal submarine could take you to new depths.
Launched at the debut of the Jaguar XF Sportbrake in 2012, the Ian Callum-designed Concept Speedboat took inspiration from the Jaguar D-Type. Style takes a front seat, with room for just three people, despite its six-metre length. In 2017, Mercedes-AMG again joined forces with Cigarette Racing to celebrate 50 years of AMG and a decade of partnership with the speed boat builder. A total of 3,100bhp and lightweight carbon-fibre design should ensure you win any impromptu races between Monaco and Nice.
Mercedes is quite keen on the water it seems, this time collaborating with Silver Arrows Marine to create a 14m dayboat inspired by the Silver Arrow racing cars of the 1930s. Power comes from two Yanmar diesel engines producing a combined 960bhp.
Pine for your Porsche while at sea? This superyacht from Studio F.A Porsche and builders Dynamiq is inspired by models like the Porsche 911, even sharing its houndstooth fabric. An output of 12,594bhp ensures you will be at your destination in no time and it even has a hybrid powertrain for improved efficiency.
The Niniette 66 is named after Ettore Bugatti’s daughter and takes styling cues from the Bugatti Chiron hypercar. It is built from carbon fibre and features sponsons for improved stability at high speeds. Bugatti’s design director described it as “a genuine member of the Bugatti family”.
Launched alongside the Skoda VisionC concept (which went on to become the Skoda Superb), the VisionSea was Skoda’s first plug-in hybrid model. It features a 180bhp petrol engine, 270bhp electric motor and a six-speed DSG gearbox. It can sail for 50nm miles on electric power and 980nm in total.
If you want a floating Corvette, you might need to give Marine Technology Inc a ring. Its ZR48 has a dashboard inspired by the C6 Corvette and exterior design cues like its black paint and even four circular taillights. With 2,700bhp, it also has enough firepower to make its four-wheeled equivalent look weedy.

WHY YOU SHOULD LIST WITH BOATSHED
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY At Boatshed, we don’t ‘sell boats,’ we help people and boats to find each other more easily. ensures that both buyer and seller get first-rate support, wherever they may be. At Boatshed, we understood long ago that selling a boat is an emotional decision. But the traditional yacht sales process did not take the seller’s feelings into account. We re-engineered the process with both buyers and sellers in mind, using techniques learned from the disruptive digital transformation that is sweeping most other global industries. As the MIT-Sloan School of Management report on digital transformation explains, “Digital transformation is focused around the customer experience, and then the restructuring of operations to align them into that experience.”This is what Boatshed has achieved. We are entirely centred on the seller and

Boatshed sells twice as fast, on average, than other brokerages, and it sells more than any others - we’re also become one of the largest brokerage in the world. ‘This is because we don’t sell boats’ We’ve replaced traditional boat-selling with a series of innovative solutions which have changed how our industry does business in every way: Digital Transformation: We meet seller expectations, because our technology reaches a vast number of potential buyers and then finds the right one; Transparency: We let the boat sell itself; our transparent approach gives all the details, but keeps the seller anonymous; Modular Brokerage Process:Provides the best value in each part of the brokerage process; Global reach, local presence: This
the buyer, and all of our operations exist only to provide each with the most satisfying experience possible. We only charge a commission if we are successful; if not, our services are completely free. We offer this level of service by linking the best-matched buyers and sellers, and by giving them all the time and information and support they need to make a decision. Paradoxically, this ‘no hurry, no hard sell’ approach sells boats faster, and has made Boatshed into one of the largest yacht brokerage organisation in the world, with agents, partners and brokers working across the UK, Europe, US, Asia and Emerging Markets. TRANSPARENT APPROACH HIGH-TECH, HIGH-TOUCH .................................................................................
We provide all the information, processes and support required to enable buyers and sellers to reach a decision. Our philosophy is of total transparency, and it means showing the boat with all its advantages and all it’s defects. This goes against all the traditional techniques of boat selling, and it’s again a reason why we sell faster and in greater numbers than other brokers. Transparency, showing a boat warts and all, actually increases the number of potential buyers, because the offer is credible.
Our platform manages all aspects of the brokerage process, and so puts all relevant sales and process information at the fingertips of both buyer and seller. Boatshed brokers are entirely focused on the customer and boat, are always there to support every aspect of this process. Alongside our technology, our key attribute is that we are based where the boat is, local assistants and knowledge is a key ingredient. We are, to coin a phrase, High-Tech, but also High-Touch.

BIG DATA
MATCHES BUYERS AND SELLERS When you list your boat with Boatshed, you log in to the best technology in the industry. Boatshed has records of thousands of viewings, dating back to 1999, and these have resulted in literally millions of engagements with boats by customers. This includes all user activity on the site including searches and saved searches, the number of times boats are viewed, how many of the pictures and videos are viewed, interaction with the listings e.g. contacting the broker, 'favouriting' a boat, offer, etc.). making an enquiry or an o We now have over 62 million rows of data, which we feed into a server ready for analysis. The analysis then takes this information and, using proprietary algorithms in what analysts call a “Recommendation Engine,” makes realtime predictions of customer behaviours. That may sound terribly technical, but the result is terrifically useful. First, we can make extremely accurate predictions on which boats a buyer will be interested in. We reinforce this knowledge with further analysis of customer actions - based on boat viewing patterns, we know that when a customer is interested in a certain boat, there are specific other boats that the customer is likely to want to see.

High performers of the future will be those who position themselves at the center of the emerging digital ecosystems.” This ability to pinpoint the best buyers for a given boat has enabled us to reduce the number of average viewings before a boat is sold. By the time we arrive at the viewing stage, we have narrowed down to potential buyers that are already armed with detailed knowledge of boat they are interested in. With no surprises, buyers are happier, and sellers get better value and a faster sale. This online platform reaches right across the globe. Today, it’s common for buyers from Japan or Saudi Arabia to find the boats they are looking for in Belgium or Barbados. The traditional yacht broker putting ads in local media or office windows is being overtaken by technology.

I
n 2015 the UK motoryacht sector reported growth of 10 per cent in the production of boats above 24m. Boats in the marine leisure market are getting bigger to accommodate the luxuries that we all expect today, resulting in marinas building longer and wider pontoons to attract these bigger boats. Today it is thought there are around 5,000 superyachts in existence; these are defined as boats longer than 30m. That is almost 60 per cent more than a decade ago, and the number of boats longer than 60m has doubled over the same period. Longer boats need to be wider in order to stay stable, and their greater weight means they sink deeper, so berths need to be deeper to0.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Premier’s Port Solent Marina has just undertaken a huge project representing an investment of just under £500,000 to upgrade a third of its infrastructure to accommodate the trend toward bigger production boats. The work, which is 50 per cent completed, and will be finished by the end of this month, will enable Port Solent to comfortably provide berths for boats from 6.5m up to 33m. The reconfigured project has also given the marina the opportunity
to provide wider fairways between the new pontoons and to renew walkways. Water and electricity supply modules have been upgraded as part of the project. General Manager, Graham Bristowe, explained: “Port Solent was built in the 1980s, since when manufacturers have made boats both longer and wider. This progression meant that our pontoons were becoming increasingly limited in their appeal to owners of contemporary production boats. “Whilst the marina welcomes a wide variety of boats, our reconfiguration work has given us the opportunity to modernise Port Solent, and it is proving particularly popular with owners of bigger motorboats.” Premier Marinas owns and operates nine South Coast marinas. In addition to Port Solent Marina, Premier’s other marinas are located in Eastbourne, Brighton, Chichester, Southsea, Gosport, Swanwick on the Hamble, Noss on Dart and Falmouth, plus specialist boatyard Endeavour Quay in Gosport Marina. With more than 5,000 berths combined, Premier Marinas strives to provide firstclass boat storage services and quality boatyard facilities at all its marinas. www.premiermarinas.com

MARINA DAY ARRIVES SATURDAY 9 June is a date for the diary, with MDL Marinas hosting the first UK Marina Day across the group. With each marina planning a fun-filled day of activities for all the family, it should prove to be a hit with everyone from dedicated sailors to those who are curious about boating and life on the water. The event first started in 2015 when MDL’s marina in Sant Carles, Spain held an inaugural annual day to involve the local community in marina life. The day was such a huge hit it was adopted by all the other marinas in Catalonia and was covered on the news. As a result, the event spread nationwide in 2017, with marinas right across Spain hosting activities on the water, tours of the marina and boat visits as well as food and music, creating a street fair atmosphere. As it brings Marina Day to Britain this June, MDL hopes that other marinas in the UK will join in the celebrations, helping to
engage local communities and business in marina life, inspiring a new generation of sailors and shining a light on the world of boating. Keep an eye on MDL’s website - mdlmarinas.co.uk - for announcements about events at your local marina.

ALL AT SEA APRIL 2018
A TRIO OF WORLD PREMIERES FOX’S NEW YACHT PREMIER Marinas has three exciting spring boat shows lined up to take place in April and May. The first will be held at Chichester Marina this month, on 21 - 22 April, when on-site brokers Ancasta International Boat Sales, Blackrock Yachting and Sussex Boat Shop will come together to display a superb array of new and used sail and motor boats. Porsche luxury cars, stowaway electric bikes, marine electronics and teak decking displays and a Premier Marine Insurance clinic will support the show. Following this is a weekend of show days taking place on 28 and 29 April at Brighton Marina’s East Lockside. These days will include boats for sale from Blackrock Yachting, Bates Wharf, Brighton Boat Sales and Ancasta International Boat Sales - plus a tender display. A raft of exciting free workshops and events will add to the show, including daily life jacket checks, life raft demonstrations and firings, Lewmar winch servicing demonstrations, antifouling advice from International Paints, rigging and splicing demonstrations, electronics and more. May 18 - 20 will see the return of The British Motor Yacht Show at Premier’s Swanwick Marina. This event will showcase the biggest names in British motor yacht sales - Fairline, Princess and Sunseeker - and will include three world premieres. The show is sponsored by GY & LF (General Yacht and Leisure Finance) and is a ‘must visit’ as there is no better opportunity in the show calendar to avoid the crowds and to get up close and personal with the most prestigious motor yachts in the world. But that is not all. Unlike the big internationals, the British Motor Yacht Show also offers buyers the ‘private
time’ and space to talk to technical experts with a passion for their brands and to learn about all of the practical and exciting aspects of owning a luxury motor yacht. Visit www.premiermarinas.com to find out more.
ANCASTA AT PLYMOUTH YACHT HAVEN YACHT broker Ancasta have grown their West Country presence by opening a new office in Plymouth’s largest marina, Plymouth Yacht Haven. The broker already has 14 offices across Europe with a strong presence in the southwest. They have offices in Falmouth, Dartmouth and Mylor and at Queen Anne’s Battery. Commenting on the expansion, Ancasta Yacht Broker James Christian said: “We have seen an expanding market at Plymouth Yacht Haven over the past few years and it seems the right time to further establish our brand and open a second office. Making this proactive step will not only strengthen our relationship with Yacht Havens Group Ltd, but it will also provide their berth holders with the opportunity to benefit from the professionalism
provided by one of the largest yacht sales companies in today’s market.” Plymouth Yacht Haven marina manager Steve Kitchen welcomed Ancasta to the marina, saying: “Ancasta International is one of the most respected brands in the marine market and it comes as no surprise that their reputation has spread to Plymouth Yacht Haven. “During this growth, what we have really been impressed by is the level of service they have provided to our customers, in both their professionalism and yachting expertise. As we already have an excellent working relationship with Ancasta due to their partnership with our sister-site, Lymington Yacht Haven, they have seamlessly fitted into the Yacht Haven family.” www.ancasta.com

upgraded the facilities and increased the marina’s capacity by 50 per cent, to 262 berths. But the numbers alone do not tell the whole story, as Racecourse Marina Manager, Neill Walker, explained: “We have transformed the marina right across the board since we arrived two years ago. Not just with our brand-new pontoon system, but also in other important areas such as offering a better crane service, training our staff to offer excellent service to our berth holders, providing designated car parking, nicer landscaping and security gates that were designed bespoke to our requirements. “Some of our customers have been at Racecourse since the day the marina was built and they have noticed and appreciated the differences. That is reward enough, but the Five Gold Anchor Award has also been a real boost for our team. We have been completely hands-on with the improvements that have been made here and this accolade is a great endorsement of our efforts to not only meet, but exceed, the challenging standards laid down by TYHA.”

RACECOURSE WINS GOLD IMPROVEMENTS to facilities and customer service made by the Tingdene Marinas team at Racecourse Marina, on the River Thames in Windsor, has resulted in it being awarded the prestigious Five Gold Anchor Award. The Gold Anchor Scheme is administered by The Yacht Harbour Association and is delivered by highly experienced independent auditors, who inspect every detail of marinas, from facilities to processes and customer service. TYHA also mystery shops them and surveys their berth holders prior to issuing a verdict. The accolade is particularly notable: firstly, because it is Racecourse Marina’s maiden attempt to receive a Gold Anchor Award of any kind; secondly, because it achieved this top ranking at a point where the scheme’s requirements have become enhanced to make them more difficult to meet and thirdly because it is the first River Thames marina so far to be assessed under the more challenging standards. It is the perfect way to celebrate a £1m project that has substantially

not have sunlight-viewable displays, are not waterproof without a case and are vulnerable to damage – potentially leaving you without any navigation data should it break or be damaged. ADDED FUNCTIONALITY For waterproofing, sunlight viewability and ruggedness, modern chartplotters are in a league of their own – but they are fixed in one location. Marine electronics manufacturers have responded by adding functionality to their products that allows users to connect a tablet or smartphone to the plotter. B&G’s range of Vulcan and Zeus chartplotters, for example, allow users to connect a tablet or smartphone. The Vulcan9 Sailsteer and iPad in use
The growth of tablets and smartphones has opened up a huge opportunity for sailors to view and control their navigation data on board. At face value a tablet offers a low-cost, portable way to view charts, navigation information and instrument data from anywhere on board, but they have their disadvantages too. Most tablets do
By downloading the free Link App from your Apple or Android device’s app store, you can view and control the screen of your chartplotter from anywhere on board. The mobile device connects to the chartplotter’s built-in WiFi network, from where it can take its data and mirror the screen. But it is not just viewing the screen – the latest app allows you to manage and back-up device settings, waypoints and routes, and also to download and enable software updates using the mobile device’s data connection. This means that you can have a waterproof, rugged, sunlight-viewable chartplotter mounted permanently in the cockpit, with a tablet repeating the information at the chart table. Down below, the screen can be seen, it is less vulnerable to knocks and it can be plugged in to charge. APP DEVELOPMENTS B&G also allows third party app developers to make use of the available data. New this spring is the Watch Leader app, developed by Osprey Technical, for use with B&G instrument networks. This takes the instrument data from a Vulcan or Zeus chartplotter’s WiFi connection and

the consumer’s point of view, always nose and taste the same. This was the pivotal change that enabled Scotch whisky to migrate from Scotland, first to England then to the world phenomenon it is now – more than one billion bottles exported in 2017. Now we have blended malts, 100 per cent malt whisky drawn from several individual single malt distilleries and matured for unspecified ages, giving the blender flexibility and consistency of the branded bottled product.
The latest innovation in the history of Scotch whisky is a blend of several single malts marketed under invented brand names and labelled Blended Malts. They are getting traction with consumers, and shelf space in the supermarkets. You cannot get more crafty than Scotch malts. There are 126 licensed distilleries, each one a ‘craft’ batch operation and 20 million barrels in maturation warehouses for many years more than the three-year minimum. They offer hundreds of taste and style options. Expert ‘nosers’ decide cask by cask when the whisky is right for bottling as a single malt or for use in the mainstream Bell’s type blends. Maturation represents a long-term investment before any sales income. This makes shelf prices for ‘craft’ malts around £30 to £40 a bottle seem fully justified.
Three to try
I found these three recently in my local Waitrose: Monkey Shoulder made in small batches from three of Grant’s Speyside malts - 40 per cent abv and £27 a 70cl bottle. The aroma is orange, chocolate and citrus. Copper Dog, a blend of eight Speyside malts, light and floral, hints of apple and honey. Showing confidence in the long-term future of malt whisky, Diageo has announced a multimillion pound investment to reopen two distilleries, Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay and Brora in Sutherland (north-east coast), both built about 1830 and dormant since 1983. The new whisky will flow from 2020 but will need at least 10 maturation years before blending or bottling. Meantime, the single-malt whiskies they once produced have been in the maturing warehouses and they are slowly releasing a cask or two per year. They have become highly prized – and priced. The Port Ellen release in 2016 was 37-yearsold, bottled at 55.22 per cent and £2,600 for a 70cl bottle from www.thewhiskyexchange.com.
