New challenge for inspirational teen

FROM PAGe 1: Legends of the sport, Dame ellen MacArthur and AAS’s Geoff holt MBe were amongst the guests marking the beginning of Natasha’s incredible 2014 Sea and Summit Challenge, which started from her hometown of Cowes on 24 July. The teenager, who last year sailed across the english Channel, does not have use of her hands and sails her yacht using her mouth only to operate a ‘sip and puff mechanism’ mounted inside a cycling helmet that was developed and engineered by her electrician dad, Gary. To complete her latest challenge, Natasha will first sail 430 miles before swapping her boat for a special walking aid to climb Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, the highest peak in southern Britain at 2,907ft. She is aiming to raise money for the RNLI, the ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and the RYA Foundation, as well as the profile of sailing for people with disabilities. Speaking at the send off, Dame ellen said: “Tash really is an inspiration to all of us and I think what she’s about to undertake is a monumental challenge but she’s totally up for it and I’m sure she will succeed. At the same time as doing this challenge, she will be making massive differences to real lives. That’s testament to the kind of person she is, she’s a role model for all of us.”

CONTENTS

As AAS went to print, months of preparation for the challenge were already paying off, as Natasha was well on schedule, reaching Dartmouth, after stopping off at Poole, Weymouth and exmouth, and receiving a warm welcome at each. Dad, Gary, described Tash as being in “great spirits” - despite the frustrations of light winds for the first few days, as the teenager made her preference for stronger breeze clear. Mum, Amanda, commented: “Any 17 year-old would be lucky to have this opportunity, but for someone with the magnitude of Natasha’s disability it’s incredible. “She prefers it to be more challenging, she has to work harder then, and feels more in control.” AAS’s very own Shelley Jory-Leigh has role of safety boat leader and is accompanying Natasha on her challenge. Shelley commented: “I have written about Natasha, interviewed Natasha so many times but now I am honoured to be a part of her team for this amazing adventure. She is such a determined and inspirational teenager she makes me feel weak!” Look out for a full update from Shelley and Natasha in the September issue of All at Sea. Ireland scoops Cup win The 2014 Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup saw Ireland’s three boat team, comprising Anthony O’Leary’s Ker 39 Antix, Marc Glimcher’s Ker 40 Catapult and Michael Boyd and Niall Dowling’s Grand Soleil 43 Quokka 8, score the most comprehensive victory in the event’s 22 year history. The Irish previously won the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s biennial flagship event for national teams with amateur crews in 2010, but were unable to defend in 2012. This year they returned with a vengeance finishing the regatta on 268 points, with an unprecedented lead of 173.5 points. After a disappointing result in the penultimate day’s race around the Isle of Wight, Ireland bounced back strongly in the final day’s double points scoring inshore, held on a round the cans course in the central Solent in a light northerly. Impressively the Irish boats claimed three of the top four places on corrected time. Antix put in a particularly powerful performance following the damage she sustained when she hit the rocks close to St Catherine’s Point the previous day, which

bent the aft end of her keel and split the bottom 1ft of her rudder. Lifting the boat out in Cowes that evening, her shore crew worked through the night to ensure she was ready for racing on the final day. “The amount of work that all 31 people have put in over the last five or six months has been considerable,” said Anthony O’Leary of the Irish team’s victory. “We are very lucky that it all paid off in the end. There is a lot of experience with three boats and it gelled very well and there was great encouragement from one boat to the other. You don’t often get a chance to sail as a team - which is the really good thing about this event.” While the Irish were the stand out performers this year, the fight remained fierce for the remaining podium positions, where French teams in a coup took second and third. After winning the 2012 event, the performance of GBR’s four teams was disappointing with GBR Red the top British team, finishing fourth. Team Scotland meanwhile took sixth.

TWO Bristol-based dinghy sailors have more than halved the record for sailing a dinghy around the UK. Phillip Kirk and Jeremy Warren from Thornbury Sailing Club sailed Wayfarer hafren around clockwise from Weymouth, up the Irish Sea inside Ireland, then across the top of Scotland. They stormed round in 32 days and 3 hours versus the previous record of 76 days. Kirk commented: “Three major factors contributed; hafren was well prepared, we did push hard and the weather was very kind.” Modifications to the standard Wayfarer included junking the thwart for a carbon tube, allowing one crew member to sleep whilst the other sailed the boat. Warren said: “We got better at sleeping on the floor, with spells of up to three hours each

towards the end; by this time we had enough confidence in each other’s ability to avoid any swimming.” The team made a dozen stops with the longest leg being 250 miles, from Weymouth to Dale in South Wales, this leg taking 67 hours. Kirk added: “The worst seas we had were no more than 10 feet, but breaking and confused,” described Kirk. “This was at night off Rattray head near Fraserburgh, and we were close to a pitch pole until we got the main off.” And the best part? According to Warren: “Cape Wrath emerged through mist with visibility down to 800m. It is monolithic and timeless. We had a good force five, and knowing the next 40 miles of Northern Scotland lacked any useful refuge, certainly focused our attention. Simply unforgettable.”

All for a good cause

It’S impossible not to be impressed by gutsy teenager, Natasha lambert. everything about this young lady is admirable - her determination, her positivity and her absolute passion for sailing. the 17-year old cerebral palsy sufferer - known to her fans as Miss Isle - has set off on her latest challenge, the Sea and Summit Challenge. Following her Channel crossing last year (which gained her the prestigious YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award 2013), this is Natasha’s most daunting mission to date: sailing 430 miles along the coast line before climbing nearly 3,000ft up the Brecon Beacons using a special walking frame. Although Natasha is accompanied on board her Mini transat ‘Miss Isle too’ by her coach Phil Devereaux, she is effectively sailing solo, with Phil on hand essentially just in case of emergency. the helm and the sails are adjusted using a clever sip’n’puff method, with Natasha completely in control. From the Solent to South Wales it’s a phenomenal distance to cover solo for any sailor, let alone using such an intense technique. Natasha has been spending many months planning the voyage, learning about navigation techniques and has even undertaken sea survival training with the RNlI. Her commitment and professionalism are 110 per cent. the high profile support she has received from the sailing community, including the likes of Dame ellen MacArthur, and AAS’s very own Geoff Holt MBe and Shelley Jory-leigh, is well-deserved. And let’s not forget that Natasha is selflessly fundraising for three separate charities whilst taking

One hundred years after the first shot at sea was fired by the Royal navy a day after the First World War in Britain was declared, the national Museum of the Royal navy will mark the centenary by inviting a sail past by Rn patrol vessel HMS Mersey off the Royal Yacht Squadron during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. It was on 5 August 1914 that the first shot at sea was fired from the gun of HMS Lance in the north Sea. The gun is now a permanent exhibit in the HMS - Hear My Story gallery at the national Museum of the Royal navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. On 5 August 2014, a single cannon will be fired from the Royal Yacht Squadron at 10am and spectators and competitors will join together for a one minute silence in memory of all those who have served in defence of the nation. A further cannon will signify the end of the silence. In addition, this year’s race for The Britannia Cup, run by the Royal Yacht Squadron, will be held in commemoration of the centenary of the Great War at Sea.

on this challenge. AAS is looking forward to bringing you a first-hand insight into the challenge from Shelley Jory-leigh - who is leading Natasha’s safety team - in our next issue, and in the meantime wishes Natasha the very best of luck. Natasha is not the only one fundraising this month. Plenty of stories have reached AAS of those of you out and about on the water taking on unusual fundraising challenges, as well as high profile regattas and corporate events all championing good causes. that we are able to use the sport that we love as an opportunity to raise money to help others get as much from it as we do ourselves, makes sailing ever more enjoyable. It was also exciting this month to hear first hand from tim Anderton of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation about the widespread plans that the charity - set up last year in memory of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson - has in store, and the benefits it is hoping to bring to young people at home and abroad through sailing. Read our in-depth interview on page 22. together with the high profile team backing the charity, tim hopes to perpetuate Bart’s legacy well beyond the Bart’s Bash Guinness World Record attempt, which will take place at yacht clubs and sailing clubs all over the world on 21 September. this holistic vision promises a positive impact across the board, with innovative opportunities not just for those new to the sport, but for those already hooked. AAS is looking forward to being one of the many thousands taking part in Bart’s Bash, and to helping secure the future for a very worthwhile cause.

The Royal Yacht Squadron played an important supporting role during the First World War. Members who owned large steam yachts were quick to offer their vessels to the Admiralty when war was declared and 38 were requisitioned and fitted out for war service. Of the 38 yachts, four were sunk by mines, one was lost in a collision, one was wrecked while chasing a submarine in heavy weather and all the others survived the war. Four other yachts served as Hospital Ships and the club’s headquarters (the Castle at Cowes) was opened up to convalescent naval officers. Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of the national Museum of the Royal navy said: “It is commonly believed that the First World War was fought entirely in the trenches, however our naval forces were engaged in battle across the world. Some 43,244 naval personnel lost their lives during the war. That single shot from HMS Lance signified the start of a campaign at sea that came at considerable human cost.”

Foiling fantastic nATHAn Outteridge (AUS) won the 2014 International Moth World Championships, hosted by Hayling Island Sailing Club. An impressive 138 boats took part, making for a fantastic foiling spectacle and a true test of sailing skills in the fickle weather that dominated the weeklong event. Despite that challenge, race organisers, including some 130 volunteers, were able to run a 10-race series for both gold and silver fleets. Competitors were not disappointed with the final day’s racing, which saw four races take place in champagne foiling conditions,

with 10-14 knot winds, leading to very tactical racing. Overnight leader nathan Outteridge cemented his championship win in style, putting in fifteen consecutive gybes and foiling across the finish line on the final leg of the last race to leave his competitors trailing. It was an impressive win for the Australian, in a strong international fleet which included the likes of Rob Greenhalgh, Mike Lennon, Dylan Fletcher, Paul Goodison and Chris Draper. Britain’s Chris Rashley took a credible second place overall, with

Australia’s Josh Mcknight in third. In his prizegiving speech, nathan Outteridge thanked the organisers for running a great regatta despite challenging conditions, and praised the standard of his fellow competitors, particularly mentioning the Brits. The Moth Ashes (for the top five placed boats representing GBR and AUS) were retained by Australia. The International Moth class expressed its gratitude to event sponsors Magic Marine, LV, Lennon Sails, CST Composites, Ronstan, Blueteq, and official media partner yachtsandyachting.com.

Close call for Panerai fleet

THE final day of racing at the 11th Panerai British Classic Week saw the fleet zigzagging around the Central Solent in a moderate southwesterly wind. For some, who were in with a chance of victory, it was tense and exciting racing, while others simply enjoyed the fun of one final sail in the company of their fellow classic yacht enthusiasts. The results went down to count back in two of the five classes. In Class 1 Stephen O’Flaherty’s Soufriere had four wins compared with Sean McMillan’s Flight of Ufford’s two, making Soufriere the overall winner with Flight second and Michael Hough’s Chloe third. Flight of Ufford’s Sean McMillan was nonetheless a very happy man saying; “I have been racing yachts for 40 years and I have never had such an enjoyable regatta as this!” Class 4 also came down to an extremely close finish on the water and a count back overall, with both Cereste and Mikado on 10 points overall and this time the count back decision went to Mikado. Third place overall went to Danegeld. “We won it by just nine seconds!” exclaimed a thrilled Michael

Briggs as he came in to check the results. “We’ve done it! Hurrah! We’ve been sailing our tails off all week and it’s finally been worth it!” added Mikado crewmember Benjamin Pickersgill. The event was as much about celebrating the beautiful historic yachts as it was about the competition. The Panerai British Classic Week prize giving dinner saw a number of very special awards, presented by Amandine Rohmer of Panerai UK including the Je Ne Sais Quoi Trophy, for the boat with that certain something special as voted for by the competitors, awarded to James Kelman’s 1947 Henry Dervin designed cutter Croix des Gardes. Best-presented new entrant was David Messum’s stunning 1939 HG May designed Berthon 8 Ton Gauntlet, Nausicaa. To thunderous applause, the crew of Spirit 52 Chloe, received the Seamanship Award for recovering man overboard David Pitman in less three minutes, under sail, in very rough conditions off St Catherine’s Point during the Around the Island Race.

SUN SHINES ON HISTORIC YACHTS “IT was a wonderful week with wall to wall sunshine,” summed up the winner of the 1972 Trophy for the overall place at Charles Stanley Cowes Classics Week 2014. Richard Hargreaves, together with his son Kit, scored four firsts and a second to win the historic cup in his Twister class yacht Sea Urchin, built in 1970, one of six in the Slow Cruiser division. Despite several days of soft winds and frustrating conditions, results came in from all classes in the 150-strong fleet of yachts, which were all were designed before 1970, many built in the early 1900s and a handful even built in the century before that.

Credit: Jake Sugden

This is the seventh time that the regatta, hosted by the Royal London YC, assisted by the other Cowes Clubs, has been run. Results highlights included a neat line of all but one firsts gave the overall position in the Fast Cruisers to the small and pretty but deceptively fast 88 year old keelboat Cockleshell, owned by Jonty Sherwill. And there was no mistaking the Aitken Challenge Cup winner as Martin Jones on Swift swept up a clean row of firsts throughout the regatta in the Swallow Class. For Kim Slater and his crew sailing on the immaculate XOD 58 Madeleine, meanwhile, it all came down to the final day. First places had gone to different boats in all six races but Kim’s stealthy consistency put him ahead of his 49 rivals. The front runners in the 19-strong Solent Sunbeam class put up a close fight, but last year’s Cowes Classics overall winners Joe and Cathy Burnie were were once again crowned champions, and winner of the Solent Sunbeam trophy for the week, the Cowes Classics Week Cup. Light winds gave little respite to the hot sun during week, but the competition was second to none on the tight committee boat courses. Next year’s event takes place from 20-24 July. Thanks go to supporting sponsors Hudson Wight, Harken, Haines Boatyard, Winkworth, Cowes Harbour Commission, nms Adaptive, Kendalls, The Yachting Studio, and Classic Boat Magazine. SUMMER CLASSIC

A classic is born from a vision. You know one when you see one; the beautiful lines, the right 'look and feel,' and the sheer perfection which prompts the observer to reach out and touch it (or taste it in some circumstances!). Wight Vodka was designed from the beginning in the spirit of a classic marque. And, being distilled 7 times here in Great Britain, embodies the ethos of a perfect finish. Enjoy, and please remember our collective tagline to Tack & Gybe Responsibly!

470 EUROS SUCCESS

Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark have bounced back after a three month injury lay-off to claim silver at the 470 European Championships in Athens. This added to Luke Patience and Elliot Willis’s European Championship gold to ensure a lucrative outing for the British Sailing Team at the Greek regatta.

Ocean odyssey returns to capital WINNING boat Henri Lloyd and the Clipper Race fleet have returned to a heroes’ welcome in London 11 months after setting off. Having conquered Mother Nature’s toughest conditions during the 40,000 mile ocean odyssey, the team was victorious in the overall Clipper 201314 Race, claiming a total of eleven podiums and five overall wins to beat second-placed GREAT Britain. Thousands of spectators lined the banks of the River Thames to welcome home 270 international amateur crew on 12 70ft yachts as they formed a Parade of Sail, which concluded with Tower Bridge lifting for the top three teams. A total of 670 crew members from 42 different countries have battled hurricanes, survived a tornado, dealt with medical evacuations and the miraculous rescue of a man who went overboard in the Pacific Ocean for 90 minutes. 40 per cent had never sailed before they participated. Henri Lloyd was presented with the Clipper Race trophy at a prizegiving ceremony in St Katharine Docks.

Canadian Skipper Eric Holden said: “It has been a life-changing adventure for the crew and I. The team’s drive, determination and strength has led us to exhaustion at times… This is a very special moment for the team and I to be crowned champions.” Sir Ben Ainslie CBE, BAR Team Principle and Henri Lloyd ambassador, congratulated the team. “What a fantastic effort by Eric and the team on board Henri Lloyd. The race has been a real marathon around the world over the past 11 months. To take part is an incredible achievement and congratulations to all those who helped the team claim the win overall.” Clipper Race founder and chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo, nonstop round the world in 1968/9 said of the crews: “They have widened their horizons and have memories to cherish that can only be won through real hands-on participation.” Teams have visited 16 ports in 11 countries and six continents during the 16-race series.

EYES TO THE SKIES

WITH more entertainment, music and displays than ever before, Chatham’s Historic Dockyard is going to be full of vintage delight on 20-21 September. One of the highlights of the Salute to the ‘40s weekend will be an air display by the ‘Spirit of Kent’ Spitfire, promising to draw all eyes to the skies. During the weekend, the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings on 6 June 1944 - which can be said to have been the beginning of the road to the end of the war - will be commemorated, together with the 70th Anniversary of the launch of WWII Destroyer HMS Cavalier. All three of HMS Cavalier’s guns will be fired, the appearance of the diesel locomotive Overlord (which served on the D-Day beaches with the Corps of Royal Engineers) and tri-service re-enactors, gather to remember. To mark the occasion the ‘Spirit of Kent’ Spitfire, with its distinctive engine sound and D-Day markings, will fly overhead in a spectacular air display, accompanied by music and commentary. The Historic Dockyard steam and diesel locomotives will be in motion the fu ll length of the display site carrying haulage wagons and hundreds of 1940’s re-enactors, military camps, a village, bombed-out house and a fire station, add to the authentic atmosphere. Plus hundreds of vintage cars, trucks and jeeps will be on site and taking part in a ‘Coming Home’ Parade. With live music across the site both days, fashion shows, themed catering, vintage fairs and the opportunity to experience what it is like to be in an air raid attack, the whole family will be entertained in vintage style at this wartime event. www.thedockyard.co.uk/salutetothe40s

SOLUTION FOR SQUIBS

After an exhaustive and thorough tender process, Rondar Race Boats has been chosen to be the next builder of the National Squib, subject to final ratification by the RYA. Last year, events led to the RYA having to withdraw the Squib boat builder licence which was issued to BP Sailboats since 2009.

LONDON CALLING

FLARE AMNESTY

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has officially confirmed Seafarers UK and Sea Cadets as the official charity partners for the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival 2014. The announcement was made at Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich, during Seafarers Awareness Week. This will be London’s first tall ships regatta in 25 years.

FLY VIP TO THE BVIS

A new VIP air service between Antigua and Beef Island launches on 31 October and flights are available to book now. The flights connect with the arrival/ departure of scheduled British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights between London Gatwick and Antigua.

FIRST FOR GBR DINGHIES The British Youth Sailing Team’s Hanna Brant has been officially selected to represent Team GB at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games, 16-28 August, in Nanjing, China. This is the first time that Great Britain will be represented in a dinghy event at the Games; Brant competes in the Byte CII class.

THE Clipper Round the World Race prizegiving ceremony in St Katharine Docks saw Skipper of Qingdao, Gareth Glover, and his team presented with a special award by joint CEOs of Henri Lloyd, Paul and Martin Strzelecki. The award was voted for by the public after the team went to the rescue of Mission Performance when two crew

members were injured and had to be medevac’d off the boat during Race 7 from Hobart, Tasmania to Brisbane, Australia. A fire then broke out in the engine room of Mission Performance and Qingdao ceased racing to assist them, towing the yacht back into Hobart. Two Qingdao crew members then joined the

Mission Performance team so it had enough crew members to be able to restart the race. Skipper, Gareth Glover, said he was “honoured” to accept the coveted award on behalf of his team. The team was awarded the Henri Lloyd Clipper Race Seamanship Award trophy with its name engraved on the base, plus £250 Henri Lloyd vouchers.

RAMORA UK, one of the UK’s leading Bomb Disposal companies, is once again repeating its distress flare disposal service for sailors taking part in this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. Over the last four years, in excess of 1500 flares have been safely disposed of by the Ramora UK team. This year, out-of-date flares can be delivered to the Ramora UK disposal area at Town Quay (next to Cowes Harbour Commission offices) on 1 August between 11am and 4pm, providing the perfect opportunity for competitors to dispose of their out-of-date flares before they go racing. This is being provided as a free service but charitable donations are welcomed. Ramora UK is working alongside Hampshire Constabulary to raise enough money through the donations made at this and other flare amnesties throughout the year to buy sailing dinghies which they will then donate to sailing clubs for the use of underprivileged youngsters who would not normally get the opportunity to experience the sport of sailing. Up to ten flares per person will be accepted but anyone wishing to dispose of more than ten flares can make arrangements to do so by contacting the Regatta Centre on 01983 295744. Disposal of quantities greater than ten will only be possible by prior agreement. This service is for private individuals only. Businesses looking to dispose of their out-of-date flares can contact Ramora UK on 08454 608911 to make alternative arrangements.

PICTURE PERFECT The World’s FirsT

KAREN Langston from Beccles, Suffolk and Jacob Hill from Bangor, County Down have been crowned winners in the ilovesailing 2014 calendar competition. “I’m chuffed to have my picture included in the calendar, it’ll look good on the fridge,” commented Jacob of his win. “It was taken in Ballyholme Bay in Belfast Lough, N. Ireland when the wind was blowing force 4-5 from the north east, giving some chop.” While Karen, who was also a winner in the 2013 calendar competition commented: “This photo from Beccles Regatta 2012 is of the Helen James race in which lady helms compete in Norfolk dinghies. That year Georgie Roll in B21 won the race seen in the foreground. I am often trying to capture the whole Norfolk fleet and this was one of the few occasions I got most of them into a single frame.”

The calendar will be available for purchase from 13 September when it is officially unveiled at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. The competition runs from March through to August 2014, with two photo winners being picked each month to appear on the 2015 calendar. “Yet again the entries we received this month have been fantastic and so diverse, there really are some amazing photos being sent in making the task of choosing just two winners a tricky task for the judges,” commented Emma Slater, ilovesailing coordinator. “With two more spots on the calendar up for grabs we would encourage everyone to get their entries in. We will pick the final two at the end of August.” www.facebook.com/ryailovesailing

Rising to the challenge COWES lifeboat crew member Andrea Vaughan experienced a lift-up in more ways than one. First she had reached the age of 50, and then she was winched aboard the Solent Coastguard helicopter during an exercise involving the Cowes station’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat. Andrea, who lives in Gurnard, said later: “It was a birthday present I shall always remember; it was really exciting. I am very grateful to the RNLI for

agreeing to me being the member of crew to be winched up, and for the professionalism of the helicopter crew.” She was also pleased that the RNLI had recently changed its policy for RIB crew members to retire at 50, but instead – subject to passing a medical every two years - go on to 55. Having served for just three years as a crew member, her volunteer role would have been all too short otherwise.

A Solent-based yacht charter company is looking over the horizon to expand its sailing packages. Fairview Sailing based in the Hamble with more than 30 yachts has teamed up with Dream Yacht Charter, the world’s biggest independent yacht charter organisation, to offer a taste of premium level sailing. Dream Yacht Charter has more than 450 yachts sailing from 37 bases in 21 countries. It offers “buya-cabin” charters on crewed 42 to 82-foot boats with between four and 12 en-suite cabins. There are 24 cruises to choose from in 12 exotic destinations. Kate Bray of Dream Yacht Charter said: “The standard is not unlike a cruise ship but much more intimate. The concept is ideal for those who want to be looked after as well as having a chance to sail a top-of -the-range sail boat or those who do not have the skills to charter independently. “Even if there is only one reservation on board, the cruise will still take place. So guests could find themselves on a private charter.” Fairview Sailing’s partnership allows customers

to Buy a Cabin experience in the UK from Port Hamble, with special offers for Cowes Week spectators available from £245 per person. A seven-day cross channel flotilla in August on an Oceanis 37 has cabin charters from £325 per person sharing or yachts can be chartered bareboat from £2,187. A spokesman said: “Dream Yacht Charter, like us, is a privately owned company and not a large PLC. The bases are small and more intimate with a professional personal service, just like ours.” A seven-night Dream Yacht cabin charter in Corsica in August costs £1,099 per person. A summer charter in Thailand starts at £576 per person. Prices based on two adults sharing a cabin include full board with tea, coffee and water through the day. Selected itineraries also include wine and punch with meals. Flights, transfers, local taxes, beverages and excursions are extra. BLUE Box Sailing, the Hampshire-based sailing experience company, has announced a far-reaching partnership with sailing charity Sail 4 Cancer. In addition to providing free sailing experiences for Sail 4 Cancer beneficiaries, Blue Box Sailing will also carry large Sail 4 Cancer logos on the bows of its two Clipper 60 yachts. On selected days between June and September 2014, Blue Box will provide unique sailing experiences for 60 people living with cancer and their families. In an act of immense kindness, the costs of laying on these special respite days will be borne by Blue Box Sailing and will include crew, lunch on board and the use of wet weather clothing. Graham Precey, Trustee at Sail 4 Cancer explained:

“The first time I attended a Sail 4 Cancer event was on board Blue Box’s Whitbread 60 during Cowes Week in 2004. In partnership with Blue Box, we provided the most amazing respite day for several young families where a child was recovering from cancer.” Graham continued: “That experience during Cowes Week had a profound effect on me. Jono and Lisa were the perfect hosts and thought up all sorts of roles for the youngsters on-board, some of whom were very ill indeed. Sadly, some of those children are no longer with us but the memories of that day out on the water will live on for the families concerned. We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Blue Box for all they have done for us.” www.sail4cancer.org

AFTEr over 25 years, Hugh robotham is taking a step back from the front line of the Cowes lifeboat operation, which means no more day or night pager alerts. Hugh began his voluntary involvement in 1988 when he joined as a crew member of the new independent Cowes rescue. He went on to become a coxswain, training officer, committee member and trustee. When in 2008 the rNLI took over the operation (by then known as Cowes Inshore rescue), Hugh was enrolled as a Deputy Launching Authority, a member of the management team and a part of the launch team. Now as he approaches the age of 70 he is hanging up his pager and retiring from active operational duties. The end of his active involvement was marked by presentations at a summer party for Cowes lifeboat members at Gurnard Sailing Club. Making the presentations was Bertha Pollock who, in 2012, had paid for the station’s latest Atlantic 85 lifeboat in memory of her daughter, Sheena Louise. Items presented included a framed certificate signed by the rNLI’s chief executive Paul Boissier and chairman Charles Hunter-Pease, and a decorated iced cake – later enjoyed by all those present. Hugh still intends to be involved in the life of the Cowes station, serving as a member of the visits and sea safety teams. But neither involve pager alerts.

Industry buoyed

THE full economic impact of the UK marine industry and spend associated with boating participation was estimated to total £6.2 billion in 2012/13, according to a new report released by the British Marine Federation. In addition, the BMF’s Economic Benefits of the UK Boating Industry also revealed expenditures are estimated to support approximately 141,000 full time jobs and more than £5.3 billion of Gross Value Added in the UK economy, taking into account all direct and indirect effects. Latest industry trends results also announced by the BMF show encouraging signs of an upward trend for this key contributor to the UK economy. The two reports were announced in a week when the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry came together at the BMF’s annual conference in Liverpool. Future expectations for the marine industry are also more promising. Almost half of the respondents have experienced an increase in overall marine business activity over the last six months and profit levels are now reporting the most positive trend since pre recession.

HAYLING Island Sailing Club’s new Get racing Club has been hugely successful in bridging the gap between the experienced, core group of HISC racing members and those standing on the shore wishing to get into racing for the first time. Launched at the start of this season the club relies on experienced member volunteers to assist those members keen to have a go at racing by offering tips, skills and coaching as well as putting on a series of informal races on selected Saturdays. A good number and mix of boats have so far attended, including rS 200s, rS Qubas, Lasers and rS Visions. The volunteer mentors, all hugely experienced racing members, have focused on key themes such as getting to the start line in time, responding to wind shifts, and the use of outhauls, downhauls and kicking straps.

Navigational safety questioned THe Crown estate, manager of the UK seabed, has agreed seabed rights for six new wave and tidal current demonstration zones and five new wave and tidal current sites around the UK. Of the 12 zones and sites announced, plans to place a further tidal current installation in Strangford Lough has caused objection from the RYA. Stuart Carruthers, RYA Cruising Manager, voiced these concerns: “We made it clear in our response to the consultation phase that the RYA does not believe that this area is suitable for a demonstration development. Further tidal current installations will compound navigational problems for legitimate users of the sea. “Recreational boaters are already having difficulty navigating safely with the combination of the SeaGen Tidal Turbine which is very much a surface piercing hazard (particularly when the beam is raised) and the Routen Wheel, a nearby area of whirlpools and overfalls. Any further devices will only compound the problem.” The site is located in ‘the Narrows’, the tricky entrance to and exit from Strangford Lough, with the tidal flows in the entrance reaching speeds of up to 7.5 knots at springs. In strong onshore winds

breaking seas can extend well over a mile south east of the entrance. even in much calmer conditions standing waves may be encountered. The Crown estate believes the provision of additional seabed rights is a necessary step forward in ‘enabling further technology development and commercialisation’, which they say will be ‘critical if the UK is to unlock its significant natural resources for wave and tidal energy’. “We are satisfied that our comments have been addressed in the selection of the other zones and sites. However, we will be working to ensure that the installations are sensitively located in order not to block or restrict traditional navigation routes where tidal currents are utilised for safe and efficient passage making, such as around the Mull of Galloway and Portland Bill,” says Stuart. “And that they are adequately marked with proper hazard marking and lighting and take into account underwater keel clearance.” Read more on the RYA’s position on tidal and wave energy at http://www.rya.org.uk/infoadvice/ planningenvironment/offshorerenewables/Pages/ default.aspx

A fleet of 1:25 working scale ships, including a replica ferry, made history recently when they crossed the Solent to raise funds for Chernobyl Children’s Life Line. the ‘ships’ normally ply their trade on two boat hire ponds in Portsmouth, but the business owner, David ritchie, couldn’t resist the challenge of getting them to the Isle of Wight. As David comments: “We designed, built and operate these little ships ourselves so we know what they can do, but they have never left the safety of the boating lakes before! Crossing an open shipping lane and ferry routes was quite exciting, and certainly not the fastest Solent crossing I’ve made. We averaged one knot and it took fours hours to get to ryde Pier.” the objective was to raise £1,000 for the local branch of Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, a charity which aims to bring child victims of the Chernobyl disaster over to the UK for fourweek recuperative breaks. Over 46,000 children have come to stay with host families since the charity started in 1992. Children on holiday visited the Miniport boat hire attraction in Gunwharf Quays last year and made such an impression on staff there that they decided to organise some fundraising for them. Breaking out of the boating lake seemed the perfect initiative.

Portsmouth revival

WHEN one thinks of yacht racing in the Solent, it is all too easy to assume that the sailing season of today is defined by Warsash in the spring, Cowes in the summer and Hamble in the winter. Yet this is far from an accurate portrayal of how the sport developed during the golden years of Queen Victoria’s reign, when the sport was primarily the plaything of the titled and famous. Although Cowes, with its close association with the royal residence at Osborne House, was rightly famous for yachting, at the same time, it was Portsmouth that would play the pivotal supporting role in developing the sport.

An opportunity to watch high class regatta action, taking place close to the shore may well prove to be a major attraction for the future

ROYAL REGATTA Little more than a decade after the visiting schooner America had won the legendary race around the Island for the ‘One Hundred Pounds Cup’ (later known as the America’s Cup) a new yacht club was being formed at Portsmouth. Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert, who was himself a keen yachtsman, gave the club royal patronage so that by 1865, the club would be known as the Royal Albert Yacht Club. Once established, the club soon took on the role of organising and hosting the Portsmouth and

Southsea Regatta, which quickly became one of the premier events in the eastern Solent. Shortly after this, four young Lieutenants - all keen yachtsmen - began the process of forming the Royal Naval Club at Portsmouth. The four were stationed aboard HMS Bellerophon at anchor at Spithead, and in fact, the very nature of this particular ship was to in part determine the future direction taken by Portsmouth. Launched just a few years year earlier, HMS Bellerophon was both ironclad and

armed with large calibre breech loading guns. Within just a few more years the old wooden ships began to disappear, to be replaced by ever bigger and more powerfully armed warships, following in the design footsteps of the revolutionary Bellerophon. Shortly after the turn of the century, the first Dreadnoughts were being laid down in the Dockyards at Portsmouth, resulting in the area becoming as dedicated to large scale heavy engineering as any site on the Clyde or north east of England.

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating. Day boat explosion The industrialisation of Portsmouth Harbour and the rapid expansion in the size of the Navy saw much of the yacht racing activity move across the Solent to the Island, with one casualty being the annual regatta. However, leisure sailing in the area of Portsmouth Harbour continued, with a notable increase in racing in the day boat classes. There was already a plentiful supply of these, with the X Boats, Sunbeams and Bembridge One Designs all proving popular. However, by the 1930s, it was felt that the Portsmouth Harbour area should have its own class, which resulted in a new one design class being launched. With its close association with the Navy, it was little surprise that the new boat, launched in 1934, would be called the ‘Victory’ class. From the outset the Victory Class proved an ideal boat for the conditions both within the harbour and the more boisterous sea states found out in the Solent. After being adopted by a number of the clubs within the harbour, it was agreed that the boats would be painted with a boot-topping colour that indicated for which club the boat was racing. Far from loosing out to the more modern day boats, the Victory Class, with its strict one design ethos, has enjoyed long term Solent success.

Revival celebRation After the conclusion of WWII and the end of the ‘battleship era’, the Portsmouth Harbour area started evolving again. In 1946, the Royal Albert Yacht Club merged with the Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Club. Then in 1971, there was a further consolidation when the Royal Naval Club and the Royal Albert Yacht Club joined together. Although the harbour was well served with superb clubs and excellent marinas, the main focus of the racing scene had, for the most part, moved westwards, to either the Hamble River, Southampton, the Isle of Wight or Lymington. All of this changed, however, in the build up to 2014 - a year that would see the 150th anniversary of the Royal Albert Yacht Club and at the same time, the 80th anniversary of the Victory class. These two milestones were a great incentive for an extended period of celebrations both ashore and afloat, with the centrepiece of these being the reintroduction of a major regatta being run out of Portsmouth. As well as providing racing for the day boat classes, starts were also laid on for yachts hailing from not only the local harbour clubs, but from right across the Solent. With the spectators very much in mind, the courses were laid so as to use marks close in to Southsea sea front, allowing the crowds on the beach a grandstand view of the action. With the event being blessed with reasonable weather, the watchers on shore were

treated to a great show of sailing action, from boats both big and small. The success of the Portsmouth Regatta clearly suggests that this is an event that can be built up into a popular addition to the calendar of summer racing events. With the nearby Camber site being chosen as the base-camp for Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup campaign, more and more people will be visiting the Portsmouth waterfront area. An

opportunity to watch high class regatta action, taking place close to the shore (and without having to cross to the Island) may well prove to be a major attraction for the future. All at Sea sends its birthday greetings to both the yacht club and the Victory class, along with hopes that the future running of the Portsmouth Regatta will continue to show the boats, and the area, off to their best advantage.

RYA FOCUS BY EMMA SLATER

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

Countdown to Rio

HOW recent does London 2012 feel? It’s hard to believe that was two years ago. What’s even harder to believe is that means it is only two years to Rio 2016! Now the final sambas have been danced for the 2014 World Cup, Rio’s drums won’t miss a beat as the countdown to the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games ticks on. As the Brazilian city hosts its first official sailing Test Event in Guanabara Bay this August, the ticking gets that little bit louder for the British Sailing Team.

HOME FROM HOME

Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign currently dominate a strong UK 49er fleet.

Some sailors have spent lots of time there already, some have enjoyed short recces and others are yet to step foot on Brazilian soil. Yet one thing is certain. When the final selected Team GB and ParalympicsGB team sailors take to the waters in 2016, no stone will be left unturned in the gold quest. The British Sailing Team has always prided itself on its preparations, and before London 2012 team officials had already visited Rio to check out the 2016 venue. The last two years have been one data-gathering mission – tides, sea states and other factors such as the surrounding physical geography are studied, physiological factors of competing in the heat and humidity analysed, meteorology surveyed. Coaches and team support staff share findings between classes so whoever is training out there at any time is armed with the latest findings.

But Laser sailor Nick Thompson admits fact-finding is as much about feeling ‘at home’ as it is having the best performance data. He says: “The off-the-water environment is as important as the on. From the last couple of times I’ve been to Rio I’m feeling more comfortable there. “Off the water I want to switch off, be around people I like and talk about anything but sailing. The build up to, and events themselves, can be long, stressful days and you have to create an environment where you can feel relaxed. You need to be able to put the last race behind you and focus on what you have to do next.”

CLASS ACT

Like London 2012 there are 10 Olympic and three Paralympic Classes for Rio. Eight of the Olympic classes – Finn, Laser, Laser Radial, 49er, 470 (men and women) and RS:X (men and women) – remain the same, as do the three Paralympic classes (2.4mR, Sonar and SKUD). But the new 2016 classes of the Nacra 17 mixed catamaran and the women’s 49erFX continue to pique interest as the Games edge ever closer. The first one-design 17ft Nacra multihull, including curved daggerboards, arrived in early 2013. The original alloy masts were replaced with carbon masts last autumn. One of the biggest differences in watching the Nacras race now is the number of boats almost fully foiling downwind, with both helm and crew trapezing.

21

Laser sailor Nick Thompson has determination and experience on his side.

Ben Saxton and Hannah Diamond have emerged as arguably Britain’s leading Nacra 17 team. Ben admits that being amongst the pacesetters in a new class, especially one littered with sailors of the calibre of Volvo Ocean Race winner, Frank Cammas, 49er Olympic gold and silver medalist, Iker Martínez, and two-time Tornado silver medalist and America’s Cup sailor, Darren Bundock, is very exciting. He says: “Throughout our campaign so far we’ve had good results at pretty much all our events, and that says we’ve been one of the boats pushing things forwards. “When we’ve made gains others have followed, by which time we’ve already moved on to working on the next thing. It’s about trying to stay one step ahead of the rest.” The 49erFX boasts the same hull and full carbon rig as its 49er ‘brother’. Although slightly less powerful overall, it’s still very physically demanding and fast. “It’s like being 15 again!” exclaims former Laser Radial sailor, Charlotte Dobson, who has formed a promising partnership with former 470 crew, Sophie Ainsworth. “I’m ridiculously excited about going sailing every day, it’s been the most amount of fun.”

GENERATION R

Ben Saxton and Hannah Diamond mastering the exciting new Nacra 17 class.

“The last Olympics we saw a lot of successful, really experienced sailors in the team. The classes are moving on and the average age of the team is getting lower,” observes London 2012 match racer Lucy Macgregor, now competing in the Nacra. “We’ve got some awesome people coming through. The future looks really bright.”

It certainly feels like a new dawn for the British Sailing Team, with no fewer than 22 of the 30 sailors selected for August’s Test Event never having been to an Olympics. With Ben Ainslie retiring from Olympic sailing, there will be new representation in the Finn - Giles Scott and Ed Wright being the leading contenders to follow in Ainslie’s awesome wake. Paul Goodison is yet to return to Laser sailing since London so there could be a guaranteed new face in that class too, with Nick Thompson the man most likely. Two-time 49er Olympian Ben Rhodes has retired and former teammate Stevie Morrison now sails with Chris Grube. However Dylan Fletcher/Alain Sign have

SECRETS TO SUCCESS

Pippa Wilson, Beijing 2008 gold medalist and now Nacra helm, says: “British sailing is so successful because of the system. It really nurtures young talent and pushes you through this system of hard work, dedication, commitment and teamwork. “You’re surrounded by good coaches and professionals who really push that talent and make you work hard.” But although the faces may change, the essence of the team doesn’t. As London Paralympic gold medalist,

recently been the standout British 49er pairing, while London 470 silver medalist, Stuart Bithell, now crews for John Pink in the skiff. The enforced breakup of the successful Luke Patience/Stuart Bithell 470 partnership has seen Luke team up with double world champion, Elliot Willis. In the women’s 470 London silver medalists, Hannah Mills/Saskia Clark, remain the ones to beat - as does Bryony Shaw in the women’s RS:X windsurfing. Chloe Martin looks set to push Ali Young for Laser Radial selection. Nick Dempsey, (pictured), will become the World’s most successful male Olympic windsurfer if he wins Rio gold, after bronze at Athens 2004 and London 2012 silver. www.britishsailingteam.com Helena Lucas, explains: “The sailing team is so special because we’re just one big team and that’s very, very rare in any other country and in many other sports.” So two years. Enough time for big improvements to be made and yet it will fly. As Luke concludes: “It lies within each sailor to do all they can do to make the team stronger. We can go to Rio and have 13 realistic medal chances. But it’s going to take a lot of work. There’s a lot to do and the clock is ticking. Right Now!”

Special report

By GeorGie Corlett

Bart’s Bash and beyond Organising the biggest dinghy event in the world in memory of one of sailing’s all-time biggest heroes was always going to be, well, a very big task. tim Anderton is the man who, in his own words, was lucky enough to find himself “in the right place at the right time” to take on the role of event manager for the Guinness World record attempt known as Bart’s Bash, which is due to take place at sailing clubs around the world this September. Not one to shy away from a challenge, tim has also taken on responsibility for Sailing Development at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre in Weymouth. Despite having only officially been in the role for a matter of weeks, tim’s involvement with the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation reaches back to the birth of the initial Bart’s Bash concept, in November 2013, when he became involved on a voluntary basis, alongside his thenday job as ryA Sailing Development officer for thames Valley.

Building blocks

Juggling his new, dual-faceted role means no two days are the same for tim, particularly given the scope and number of projects in the pipeline for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. What many may not

realise is that Bart’s Bash is just the tip of the iceberg - the flagship fundraiser for a charity that has been set up in order to make a big impact on British sailing with big plans for the future. Whilst the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation’s primary focus is inspiring and enabling opportunities for young people aged 5 to 24 years of age through the sport of sailing - which the charity plans to achieve in many different and exciting ways - there’s also the additional aim of helping to increase opportunities within, and ultimately raise the standard of, sailing more widely across the UK’s clubs and classes. “We have so many projects!” says tim, who’s role is to establish, develop, manage and prioritise each one. “one of our many challenges is making sure we make the most of what we have now; we don’t want to focus on one project per year, for instance, and end up in the situation that five years down the line, we haven’t achieved some of our top goals. “right now it is about pulling it all together, getting the right team around us. it’s about building up a viable model. Tim, here helming, is himself a lifelong sailor with a passion for sailing development. Image: Alex Irwin - Sportography

Q&A Name: tim Anderton Job title: Bart’s Bash event manager, and Sailing Development, Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation Length of time in job: 1 month Favourite thing about your job? Getting kids onto the water and giving them the chance to experience a completely new sport Biggest challenge in your job? ensuring a sustainable future for the ASSF and it’s projects, making sure that we do justice to the man behind the project and ensure his legacy lives on Where will you be and what will you be doing on Bart’s Bash day? i have registered to sail my rS400 in Weymouth at the ASSC, whether i get chance to do that is up in the air, i am sure there will be a lot to do on the day! Favourite boat to sail? At the moment rS400 - but anything big and fast does the job Favourite place to sail? Has to be Weymouth! When you’re not sailing or working, what can you be found doing? Snow boarding in the winter is a good get away; water skiing or windsurfing in summer

Paul Goodison, Iain Percy and Sir Ben Ainslie, together with Bart’s two sons, at the opening of the ASSC earlier this year. Image: Jak Bennett

“there are so many ideas being thrown around at the moment, the potential is simply huge. But a lot depends on how successful Bart’s Bash is as a fundraiser. We need to make sure the ASSF and our projects are sustainable in the long term. “At the moment, people are jumping on the back of Bart’s Bash because of what it is, a huge event in memory of Andrew Simpson. that’s absolutely brilliant, and it’s more than we could ever have wished for at the start of the project, when we were aiming for just 50 clubs and 2000 people! But as it moves along, we need to develop a clearly stated aim - we are doing this to raise money, and that money is going to be spent in such and such a manner.”

Home of British sailing the ASSF already has many success stories up and running, which includes delivering the Sail for a Fiver scheme run in conduction with the Chesil trust, which gives school children three-hour sailing lessons for just £5. Also already a hit is the instructor training programme, offering keelboat, racing, advanced, multihull and coastal endorsements. there’s also the Ambassador programme, which sees inspirational sailors - all olympic medallists and World Champions, such as Pippa Wilson, luke Patience, Nick Dempsey, Simon Hiscocks, Hannah mills - working with schools to inspire youngsters to try sailing.

23

All At SeA AUGUST 2014

“When we first launched the event, we thought if we could get 50 clubs and 2000 people involved, that would be a good target, enough to set the record,” says tim. As soon as tim and the team went public with the concept of the event, interest went off the scale. Over 550 clubs and 1450 sailors have so far declared their intention to compete, with top sailors from around the world pledging their support in memory of their friend, including the likes of Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy, Jimmy Spithill, Paul Goodison, loick Peyron and Saskia Clark (who has also been helping with the admin of the event) - to name but a few. Yacht clubs as well as dinghy clubs from some 48 countries have registered to run races. In place of the conventional Portsmouth

Yardstick handicapping system, a unique ‘Bart number’ system is being developed especially for the event. Providing the length of the course is more than 1km (can be multiple shorter laps) and the race lasts longer than 15 minutes and has at least 25 boats, any registered race will count towards setting the Guinness World Record for the largest sailing race within 24 hours across multiple venues. tim says: “We’re now encouraging individuals to sign up via our website, It is great for us to know how many people are going to be involved on the day, typically sailors don’t sign up till a few weeks beforehand but instead of holding off, go to the website, sign up and start fundraising.” Participants are asked to donate a voluntary £5 entry fee per person, with all funds going directly to the ASSF. You can also use the race as a fundraising opportunity; open a Just Giving page relating to the event, and for every fundraising milestone reached, prizes - both virtual and real - will arrive in your inbox and/ or on your doorstep. An online leader board means you can track your progress against the likes of Iain Percy, Paul Goodison, and Bart’s son Freddie - all current leaders. there are also clubs across the country organising charity auction and events; Weymouth Sailing Club has one in August where members are giving up their expertise for a day, and people can bid for an electrician

“We want to be able to offer that race training programme - not just RYA Stages One to Four, but Start Racing, intermediate racing, squad racing, race coach training, coach development… the full works.” Much of this activity so far has been focussed around the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre, which opened its doors to the public in May of this year having taken over the former Sail laser site, adjacent to the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy. Run by Centre Manager Warren Surtees with Paul Goodison as Centre Director, the site has all the infrastructure in place to deliver training at all levels, with the added bonus of accommodation available at nearby Portland house. It’s a perfect starting point from which the ASSF can implement another of its aims: engaging with competent sailors. tim explains: “Weymouth hosts huge national championships and training sessions, but there has never really been a body which organises training and coaching on site. We can now work with squads and the class associations to offer this training and take some of the organisation away from the volunteers who run it. “We want to be able to offer that race training programme - not just RYA Stages One to Four, but Start Racing, intermediate racing, squad racing, race coach training, coach development… the full works.” Pre-nationals training and residential camps for club groups top the list. Queen Mary SC is an example of a club which, next year, has planned to bring its topper and junior laser sailors to the centre for a special weekend of training. And whilst the kids are on the water, provision will be made for their parents to get afloat too. tim says: “they won’t actually have to organise anything themselves, so the pressure is taken away, yet everyone gets to go on the water. “We have some top coaches signed up for such weekends already, the likes of

nick thompson and Ali Young. It’s great for us to have such inspirational sailors as part of the team, and a bonus for our Olympians and aspiring Olympians to earn some money!” With all this already in place at the ASSC at Weymouth, and interest running high for next season, the centre is already proving hugely successful, and is itself a valuable fundraiser for the charity.

Far-reaching vision

Despite this, the charity is determined not to be pigeon-holed as Weymouthcentric, and it has a far-reaching vision that extends much further, as a national, even international charity. With some 50 countries involved in Bart’s Bash, the ASSF wants to be able to put back into as many of those nations as possible - both abroad and at home. Already there are plans to roll out the Sail for a Fiver scheme at other centres nationwide. Other initiatives in the pipeline include giving assistance to clubs to run instructor courses and improve the level of coaching within their clubs; running local class clinics where class-specific expertise can be shared amongst groups of local club sailors and coaches; and helping organisations with equipment grants. the key to these projects will be forming a pathway into regular participation. the charity is looking at all sorts of organisations and opportunities, as tim says: “It doesn’t even have to be an RYA training centre. So long as they’ve got enthusiastic volunteers, if they’ve got the people who are interested and the pathway to take things forwards then that’s something we can get involved with. “One thing we certainly are not doing is competing with the RYA. they do

or sailing coach. tim says: “It’s a great way of giving something to the event. let us know what you have planned and where possible we can help out as well.” But ultimately, it’s the taking part that counts, as tim sums up: “At the end of the day, it’s about generating enthusiasm. So much of our sailing is focussed on pure racing - but actually, a lot of people go sailing because of the social scene that surrounds it.

“that’s why Bart’s Bash has worked so well. It has pulled everyone together - not just in the UK but across the world, across all different classes - Olympians will be racing kids in Oppies alongside tP52s, round the world yachts and windsurfers. It’s a big thing that everyone can buy into, that everyone understands and that’s something different; so people think ‘I want to be a part of that’. And it’s just gone huge!” www.bartsbash.co.uk

The Foundation plans to help novice and experienced sailors alike through a wide range of projects. Image - Jak Bennett

Future events

It is hoped that Bart’s Bash will become an annual international event. even though it may not necessarily be a record breaker every time, tim and the team would love to see the excitement and support continue - and of course, Bart himself remembered - for many years to come. Watch this space!

Star of the show

Bart’s eldest son, Freddie, will be making his competitive sailing debut at Bart’s Bash, sailing at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre. Assuming that the weather is kind enough, fouryear-old Freddie will be crewing for his Uncle Iain (Iain Percy) in the Skandia Star, taking on the role that his Daddy performed alongside Iain so successfully in World Championships and Olympic Games.

what they do very well. But there are gaps in the market. “Kids don’t have to go through the squad system to be inspired to stay in the sport for life. Yes, for some, it’s all about getting the Olympic gold, but for the majority giving them a sport, an industry and a lifestyle within the sailing world - that’s what its all about. the ASSF wants to offer opportunities linked to sailing on every level, and therefore has extended funding to projects onshore as well as afloat. the charity has already begun utilising its wide network of contacts, sponsors and supporters across the marine industry, to develop a careers training platform for young people. A key project involves establishing formal links to companies - such as clothing, engine and boat manufacturers - to open up sailing-specific training to young people, complementing and going beyond the basic sailing and power boating instructor training already taken by many. “the focus of ASSF is fundamentally about changing kids lives, giving them opportunities,” says tim. “We want to train people across the industry, not just in one or two aspects of it.”

Bart’s legacy

there’s no doubt the work of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is already making a huge impact, and is creating a legacy on the sort of scale that Bart would undoubtedly have approved of. With future fundraising possibilities in the pipeline including marathon events, high profile yacht races, charity auctions and even perhaps a virtual Bart’s Bash, there will be no shortage of inspiration for its fundraisers. And there’s certainly no shortage of ideas for bringing Bart’s legacy to fruition, or energy and passion from the team implementing them. tim says: “the aims of the Foundation are exactly what I love doing - working with young people, getting them into sailing, yes, getting them racing, but also giving them new opportunities in their lives. It’s what I’m passionate about and this was just the ultimate opportunity to do that.”

FREE WASTE DISPOSAL

And last but certainly not least, a reminder to boaters to Love Where You Sail and dispose of blackwater responsibly, preferably on shore using pump out or at least three miles out to sea. In yet another show of superb commitment by the sector, MDL Hythe Marina Village, Lymington Yacht Haven and the Premier Marinas at Port Solent, Swanwick, Chichester and Southsea have all offered free pump out during Cowes Week – in addition to Yarmouth and Cowes Harbour Commission who have a free facility all year round. Booking ahead is required via www.thegreenblue.org.uk. Nothing short of a great team effort is making AAM Cowes Week more than sustainable than ever.

ANYTHING GOES

WITH Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2014 taking place from 2-9 August, and with so much happening – from Boss Up the Mast and Ladies Day to the Red Arrows and Family Day – it’s hard to see how sustainability can be squeezed in to the programme, but thanks to Cowes Week Limited and Sunsail, it has! There’s no better platform in the sailing calendar than Cowes Week to raise awareness of green boating but the trick, as always with trying to change behaviour both on and off the water, is to make it easy, practical and fun. The Green Blue has enjoyed a fantastic partnership with Sunsail for over five years, and the company’s enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to green boating has been a driving force for this year’s initiatives.

Sunsail’s ‘green day’ during Cowes Week 2013 promoted across its fleet of Sunsail Match First 40 yachts is now regatta-wide for 2014, with all competitors encouraged to #GoGreenBlue and enter a photo competition via Twitter or Instagram by taking a snap of their best green efforts of the week – Incredible Hulk fancy dress, mixology with crème de menthe or recycling on board – if it’s green anything goes. With some amazing prizes up for grabs - a luxury ski holiday in Canada and tickets to the FA Cup Final in 2015 courtesy of Sunsail’s partners, Crystal Ski Holidays and Sportsworld - specialist hospitality, travel and event services company - there’s a great incentive to get snapping.

FREE RE-FILLS

Plastic water bottles are always a challenge at major events, but with the population’s thirst for plastic seemingly unquenchable and 80 per cent of disposable bottles still ending up in landfill, it’s time to make the switch. With brand new free water stations available at Cowes Yacht Haven and Shepards Wharf (a huge thank you to both) and with sports bottles on sale in the Regatta Centre and from UKSA’s stand in the

Yacht Haven, there are no excuses, especially with the proceeds going to AAM Cowes Week official charity UKSA – a great cause.

EVERY LITTLE HELPS

When you work in sustainability you can’t help but become slightly addicted to the detail… If you are in Cowes and happen to look down you may see brand new shiny drain markers in the streets – maybe not that exciting, but a great visual way to stop anything going into the surface water drains that shouldn’t and ending up in the harbour. The same goes for bow stickers, but thanks to Cowes Week Limited and Grapefruit Graphics, guidance on how to apply them properly should keep them firmly in place for the week before they can be peeled off and recycled!

Portsmouth, at which I was honoured to be present and meet some of those involved. The project aims to inspire people with MS to find a way to follow their dreams, and to create networks between MS sufferers and sailing communities by organising sailing taster sessions in selected ports of call.

LIFE CHANGING

Images - onEdition

A rather special yacht set sail from Portsmouth recently as she continued on her circumnavigation of the world. Oceans of Hope is the flagship vessel of a campaign by the same name which aims to change perceptions of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) during the course of its 17-month global journey, encouraging participation in sailing as the yacht makes its way around the world. It is a project of the Sailing Sclerosis Foundation which was set up by

Danish doctor and psychotherapist, Mikkel Anthonisen. The 20-metre yacht aims to undertake the first global circumnavigation by a yacht with a working crew of people with MS. As part of that 61,000km (33,000nm) voyage, Oceans of Hope enjoyed a highly successful and inspirational four-day stopover in

People from all over the world can take part in the voyage. British crew member, Phil Gowers, 46, a dental surgeon and father of two from Gosport, Hampshire, joined the crew on board in Portsmouth for the next stage to La Rochelle, France. He said: “Even when you’re faced with an incurable disease you should always have hope. Oceans of Hope is giving us something that is really a brilliant opportunity to take around the world that will really make everyone realise that we are there to be involved with life. We want to make the most of this fantastic opportunity.” Phil explains that his view of life

changed following the devastating Kings Cross fire in November 1987 in which 31 people died. “When I was younger I was one of the last people out of the Kings Cross fire and after that my perspective on life was different. I don’t fear it; I embrace it. I think it will be really lovely for people to challenge themselves in a relatively safe environment.”

FOLLOWING DREAMS

Phil, whose wife Laura and two sons were at Gunwharf Quays to wave him off, was diagnosed with MS in 2005. Stepping on board Oceans of Hope as he and his fellow crew members prepared to set sail, he said: “I met the crew when they arrived in Portsmouth on Friday and I already feel part of the family. I have been looking forward to getting on board for months. The level of interest in the Oceans of Hope project has been amazing; it really has captured people’s imaginations and I hope we inspire others to go out and follow their dreams.” Oceans of Hope’s voyage began in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 15 June and will continue across the globe with further stops in Europe, the United States, South America, Australia and Africa, ending the circumnavigation back in Copenhagen in the autumn of 2015. People with MS from all over the world can take part and places are available on board throughout the journey. www.sailing-sclerosis.com

LAST month, RYA Chief Instructor, Sail Cruising, Vaughan Marsh shared his top tips for picking up a buoy under motor, however sometimes your engine may not work or you decide you would like to sail onto the buoy. So this month Vaughan shares his tips for picking up a mooring buoy under sail. “The majority of the skills are the same however, at some stage you will need to have the vessel stopped at the buoy with the sails de-powered. With some basic knowledge of sailing, a good appraisal and plan this is easily achievable and a satisfying skill to master,” comments Vaughan. Before you start your approach check that you can use the mooring and is there enough depth for you vessel. Check for potential hazards and do a recce past your chosen buoy. Manoeuvre your vessel to a safe area and create your plan then brief the crew.

Tips for controlling the speed Try and keep her moving until you are confident you will get to the buoy, this balancing act and the bes is a t part of sailing onto a buo y. If using the headsail, for better control reduce the size of the sail until you moving just slightly quicke are r than the speed of the tide

What next? Once secured to the buoy drop and secure the sails. Then determine how long you are going to stay. If more than two hours consider a second line though the buoy as a round turn and two half hitches to remove chafe and leave the other line slack as a safety line. Check that the depth will be sufficient for the time you are staying. Remember - constantly monitor your speed, depth, angle of approach and any hazards. Don’t be afraid to abort and change the plan.

EXPERTS’ FORUM SPRAYHOOD CHOICE WITH TECSEW

SPRAY STOPPERS

sprayhood should look right on the boat, whilst being practical in terms of allowing use of all winches and cleats. Just as importantly, we also need to consider the longevity of product, quality of materials and ease of use.

PRACTICAL DESIGNS

John Bland, Managing Director of TecSew Limited, turns the focus onto sprayhoods - what should you consider when commissioning a new design? THERE are two main aspects to commissioning a successful sprayhood. Firstly, we need to think about the aesthetics of the design, i.e. that the

On most single helm yachts you would usually want to be able to look over the top of the sprayhood from the helm. Visibility forward is important; bear in mind that visibility is impaired when looking through the window material. On twin helm boats it is normal to be able to look around the sprayhood, allowing for a higher design. The biggest complaint heard is that, “I cannot see over or through the hood when it rains and end up folding it down when I need it most”. The design should reflect the lines of the boat and fold down with ease whilst being practical. Due to this, a full turn on the handle of coachroof winches is not always practical and they may have to be ratcheted. Access to primary winches should be maintained; if winches are set well forward, consider specifying a roll back wing which will offer both coverage, yet when rolled will clear the winch handle.

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. It is important to view examples of previous work when choosing a supplier; if a company has 3D CAD design capabilities, this can help enormously in getting the design ‘just right’. Many companies will have online galleries showing previous work and it may be possible to order a standard product, perhaps one that was developed

ENSURING LONGEVITY

Quality of canvas is important. A quality acrylic canvas with an internal water proofing coating such as Sunbrella plus will give optimum performance and resist fading.

Factors to consider include:

■ Ease of removal of canvas - zip pockets and zipped track should be included ■ Ease of dismantling frame; are the deck and frame fittings quick release? ■ Is the back edge of the sprayhood reinforced where it will take wear? ■ Is the sewing thread top quality? Ask about the size of the thread and whether it’s UV stabilised? ■ How is the hood tensioned aft - preferably with a strong 40mm webbing strap sewn to the rear edge of the sprayhood? Frame size and fittings are important; preferably go for 22mm tube or heavier, avoid 19mm. Choose heavy-duty frame

with the original yacht builder or importer. Perhaps an online search detailing boat model and sprayhood will return results and it’s also helpful to make use of Google images. Even if you are ordering a bespoke design, pictures of alternative designs can help show your manufacturer what you want to achieve. fittings, which should be riveted to the frame, and avoid grub screws, which work loose. Avoid fittings that contain plastic. Grab bars, if specified, should preferably be welded, and consider having them hand leathered - not bolted - through the canvas for strength and ease of canvas removal. Consider other extras, such as windows in the wing sections or sides of the top panel to improve visibility, or a roll up centre window to provide ventilation and improved visibility looking forward without folding down the hood. You might even like to consider blinds to protect the windows. Make the right informed choices and you will end up with a product which will enhance the lines of your boat and give longevity of service, not letting you down when conditions are rough. www.tecsew.com

POWER

Business woman and British Power Boat Champion Shelley Jory-Leigh, from Hampshire, is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the top female in the world. In her spare time she runs a bridal business.

SHELLEY JORY-LEIGH

Racing in the Superboat Unlimited class, Florida. Image: Chuck Caroll

Back in the driving seat I did it! After a two-and-a-half year break from racing I finally got back in the driving seat and raced with the big boys again. After a serious racing accident in 2010 many people thought I would never race again at the top level of powerboat racing and that I had hung my boots up for good. But I never said I had retired - I was just waiting for the right time and the right team. After crashing out of the 2010 World Championships and taking nine months out to recover, I did return to racing in the P1 Superstock UK Championships – this is stock racing, which I love, and is where I learnt most of my racing experience.

However, it was too early and I struggled through the season with the side effects of concussion mixed with fear.

Shelley with supportive throttleman, Nigel Hook. Image: Cole McGowan

PICKING THE MOMENT Finishing fourth in the championships, I had got back on the horse, as they say, but not felt the addiction to race and win as I had done before. So, I ditched the crash helmet for the microphone and worked on my media career as a racing commentator for BBC, Sky Sports and other broadcasters across the world. Then, this July saw the right time, the right team and the right location combine to form the perfect opportunity - driving for my old team, #77 Lucas Oil, in the Sarasota Grand Prix, Florida.

I had previously driven for #77 Lucas Oil in the 2008 P1 World Championships and I felt very comfortable getting back in the boat with the very experienced throttleman, Nigel Hook. He had witnessed my accident in 2010 so knew exactly what I was going through when I got back in the race boat with him. As usual, his professionalism calmed me instantly and I could not wait to buckle down the harness and go racing. BACK ON THE PODIUM The 30th Sarasota Grand Prix drew record crowds into the streets and along the beaches of Sarasota. An estimated 40,000 fans lined Main Street to cheer us on and the crowd enjoyed what is one of the biggest holiday parades in Florida. Waving the Union Jack flag I loved the parade – not knowing at this time whether I could really do this again – but the crowds and

The team enjoyed every moment of the street parade. Image: Chuck Caroll

my Lucas Oil team mates were so proud and supportive of me, I could not let them down. 41 race boats participated in two races along The Lido Beach. With very little wind and flat seas, the catamarans clearly had conditions on their side but we fought hard against them in the Superboat Unlimited class. #77 Lucas Oil once again showed that reliability and perseverance pays off by finishing in second place. I was chuffed to bits! I had done it and in some tough conditions – the race was 85 miles long and the inside temperature of the race boat cockpit was 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). When you’re running at speeds in access of 130mph there is a lot to think about - and quickly! Thank you so much #77 Lucas Oil team, you made my comeback so easy and very enjoyable - watch this space because I am not done yet!

TECHNICAL PRINCESS

In the Autumn of this year, the P68 will arrive, promising to rewrite the rule book on flybridge luxury, space and performance. Fitting into the Princess flybridge range between the 64 and 72 Motor Yacht, the 68 enjoys the highest level of internal volume ever created by Princess for a given length, delivering four class leading cabins, a vast deck saloon and a flybridge and twin cockpits that will be the envy of many a 75ft vessel.

SUNSEEKER has announced its most ambitious project yet within its new custom line of Yachts, a 168 Sport Yacht – the largest ever Sunseeker to date in 2017. The 168 Sport Yacht announcement follows the launch of the 155 Yacht earlier this year. The new tri-deck model promises an exciting combination of performance, looks and space, with the ability to cover 4000 miles in economical displacement cruising mode. For photos and build updates, see www. sunseeker.com The build announcement follows the news that, after five years’ service, Stewart McIntyre will step down as Managing Director. A special Board has been formed to appoint a new CEO. In the interim, Wanda Group, which acquired 91.81 per cent of shares in Sunseeker in August 2013, has endorsed the appointment of Sunseeker’s founder, Robert Braithwaite CBE as Acting President.

EXPLorInG AFLoAT

THE west coast of Scotland has some of the best sailing waters in the world, and Troon Yacht Haven offers the perfect location to enjoy them. As the most southerly marina on the Clyde estuary, Troon gives you the choice of exploring the sheltered waters of the upper firth or heading to Ireland or the Western Isles. Topping the suggestions for day sailing, the Island of Arran is only 15 miles from Troon, and if you stick to an exact westerly course you will arrive at Lamlash. Visitor moorings are available and a warm welcome awaits ashore where you can enjoy a pleasant lunch looking out over the bay to Holy Isle. Just north of Lamlash is Brodick, which also offers visitor moorings and an even larger selection of quality restaurants ashore. For weekend sailing, head out into Inchmarnock Water, leaving the Isle of Arran to port and the Isle of Bute to starboard, you will arrive at the mouth of Loch Fyne where you can berth overnight at the picturesque Tarbert Harbour pontoons. or alternatively try the marina across the Loch at Portavadie. For another highly recommended trip, sail towards the south end of Arran, leaving the Island of Pladda to starboard and Ailsa Craig to port. Experience some breathtaking scenery as you sail towards the Mull of Kintyre. Sail up Campbeltown Loch to the

harbour and visit the superb royal Hotel (www.machrihanishdunes.com), which has been fully refurbished and prides itself on excellent food and service. If you have a full week to enjoy sailing from these parts, head across the north Channel to either Bangor or Ballycastle in northern Ireland, which is possible to do in daylight from Troon. From here you can sail to the Isle of Man and return to Troon via Port Patrick. Alternatively sail round the Mull of Kintyre to the beautiful island of Gigha and then north towards the Isle of Jura and Islay returning south through the Crinan Canal to Loch Fyne, sailing homewards via Tarbert.

IN THE DRINK CONSIDERING how simple and enjoyable the standard London dry gin recipe is, the number of boutique distilleries opening up around the country and the expanding range of gins now available is quite remarkable. The new arrivals are mostly the result of enthusiasts dreaming up a better London dry gin mousetrap, like Sipsmith or Adnams. In retaliation, mainstream distillers are resurrecting ‘original’ recipes or adding novelty botanicals to their existing distillate to create new flavours such as Gordon’s Cucumber or Elderflower – or the pretentiously exotic Tanqueray Rangpur, which uses rangpur limes in recognition, I imagine, of the popularity of gin in the days of the Indian Raj. Waitrose sees the resurgence as reason for a dedicated leaflet featuring over 20 of the gins it stocks of all types including a brand new one, ‘BLOOM’. This is the brainchild of one of the few lady master distillers in the business, Joanne Moore of G & J Distillers (the new name for Greenalls in Cheshire) which is a major producer of gin and vodka for its own brands as well as for supermarket own-label offerings. And, as far as I can research, this is the first gin variant to be primarily (but not exclusively) aimed at ladies and the female palate. Having started as a London dry gin with juniper and coriander, it ends as a light floral gin with camomile and honeysuckle and pomelo (a citrus fruit from Asia sometimes called Chinese grapefruit) as the signature botanicals. Presented in a decorated bottle featuring flowering vines winding up its neck, it is smooth to the taste and slightly sweeter than regular Greenalls London dry gin. Perfect, they say, cut with Fever Tree Tonic or as the base for a fortified Italian ladylike summer cocktail, the Bellini - equal parts BLOOM gin and peach juice topped up with Italian Prosecco fizz. Find BLOOM at Waitrose for £24, 70cl at 40 per cent abv.

Wight alternatives

On the other hand, Wight Vodka, another popular white spirit produced in London, sticks to its one triple-distilled recipe and gets its variety from a ready pool of cocktail recipes appropriate to different occasions, sailing or otherwise. What, then, I asked, do they have especially for the ladies? The instant reply was Wight Sundown Martini: 1 shot Wight Vodka, 2 shots passion fruit juice, 1 shot lemonade, shot ginger beer, a splash

Floral appeal

I haven’t yet found a boutique beer brewed with this market in mind but Czech Staropramen lager went down well with my female tasting group on a recent sunset cruise up the river. Dry and fresh in ladylike 33cl bottles and five per cent, it is available in most supermarkets at around £5 per pack of four bottles. As for a suitable wine, a very nice Cono Sur Bicicleta white viognier from Chile would fit the bill. Light and crisp with floral perfume and apricots on the tongue and a healthy 13.5 per cent. A bottle is £8.49 at Waitrose or cheaper on promotion at Asda or elsewhere.

of grenadine, garnish with wedges of watermelon, pineapple and lychee, mix in a shaker with ice , and serve over ice. A bit more complicated than pouring a shot of BLOOM, but very ladylike all the same.
