BRITAIN’S MOST READ WATERFRONT NEWSPAPER

AUGUST 2018

HISTORIC WIN BRITAIN’S MOST READ WATERFRONT NEWSPAPER For the first time ever in a round the world yacht race a female skipper has won. After 11 months and 40,000nm Sanya Serenity Coast’s Wendy Tuck led her team to victory as the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race reached its dramatic conclusion in Liverpool. In a further display of the strength of women’s sailing, second place went to Britain’s Nikki Henderson, 25, who skippered Visit Seattle. Nikki is also the youngest ever Clipper Race skipper, taking the title from fellow Briton Alex Thompson, who was 26 when he won the race in 1998. FULL STORY PAGE 3

FIRST FEMALE WINNER FOR THE CLIPPER RACE Wendy Tuck

Image: imagecomms 2018

FROM PAGE 1… Since leaving Liverpool almost a year ago, the 11 Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race teams have battled each other in 12 races, experiencing everything from frustrating wind holes to ‘phenomenal sea states’, boat speeds up to 35 knots, extreme heat and freezing conditions. In an exciting outcome for women’s sport, in the thirteenth and final stage from Derry-Londonderry to Liverpool, British and Australian skippers, Nikki Henderson and Wendy Tuck, were competing to be the first ever female winner in the event’s 22 years. Nikki Henderson, 25, from Surrey had led her Visit Seattle team to victory in Race 12 from New York to Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland, the penultimate race of the 40,000nm Clipper 2017-18 race. Victory set up a thrilling duel for the overall Clipper Race Trophy against Sanya Serenity Coast skipper, Wendy Tuck. This would be a ground-breaking result for sailing, as a female skipper has never before won a round the world yacht race,

and also for sport in general where it is rare to have women and men compete in the same competition. Ahead of the final race start, Wendy Tuck said: “To my biggest competitor in this final race I say, Nikki you are amazing, at your age I could not even be in charge of myself, let alone up to 50 plus crew who you have got round the world fast and safely. However we finish up, women’s sailing will be the winner.” Clipper Race Chairman Sir Robin KnoxJohnston added: “There has never been a round the world sailing race where

the leading skippers are women. The competition is tough with experienced sailors and a previous winner too. “To have men and women competing together in sport on a level playing field is very special and I am really looking forward to what this last race brings. I am incredibly proud of Nikki and Wendy and whatever their final standings are, I could not imagine better role models for women’s sport.” In the end, though, there could be just one winner and it was Australia’s Wendy Tuck who became the first ever woman

to win a round the world yacht race. Thousands of people flocked to the banks of the River Mersey to watch the Race Finish Sprint. After an intense 18nm duel, it was Garmin, PSP Logistics and home team Liverpool 2018 that picked up the final bonus race points in front of the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. However Sanya Serenity Coast held the overall lead of the Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race while second place went to British skipper Nikki Henderson, 25, of Visit Seattle. After the win Sanya Serenity Coast skipper Wendy, 53, from Sydney, said: “I cannot believe it. It has not really sunk in but I am just so happy. It is so, so special. “I do not think it is about being a woman. It is just do what I do. But I am very proud and even prouder of my team. They are the ones that did all the work and considering many had never sailed before, what they have accomplished is incredible.” On the result Nikki Henderson said: “Congratulations to Wendy and her team – you were just too quick for us! We did not get the win but I am so proud of how my team dug deep and kept fighting right until the end. No matter how hard it got, they turned up on deck ready to work and deserve every bit of this success in coming second.” One of the biggest cheers of the day went to home team Liverpool 2018. The bright pink team entry, which has been flying the flag for the city as it raced around the globe, returned to its home port to a hero’s welcome after double podium success in Race 13, where it finished second, and the Sprint Finish, where it took third place. www.clipperroundtheworld.com Turn to page 37 to read All at Sea’s Q&A with Race Director Mark Light.

ICONIC TRAFALGAR SAIL ON DISPLAY IT has lain unseen for the last six years but now HMS Victory’s Trafalgar Sail, the only surviving foretopsail from the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, is on display for a limited time this summer at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Measuring the equivalent of two tennis courts when fully laid out, the sail

is 80 feet at its foot, 54 feet at the head and 54 feet deep and covers an area of 3,618 feet. It is pock-marked by 90 shot holes, its battle scars paying tribute to the ferocity of the battle on the day – 21 October, 1805 - when Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson was fatally wounded. www.historicdockyard.co.uk

TRACY’S Q&A

Seldén Mast Ltd will be hosting a live Q&A session with Tracy Edwards on 19 September on their stand (J213) at the Southampton Boat Show. The Q&A with this inspirational yachtswoman will be streamed live on the Seldén Mast’s Facebook page. Questions can be posted in advance on the Facebook page or asked in person on the stand during the session. www.seldénmast.com Check out next month’s All at Sea for our own Q&A with Tracy along with a Maiden up-date!

UNICORN RESCUE

According to the Southern Daily Echo a man using an inflatable unicorn had to be rescued hundreds of meters from the shore. It is just one of a number of inflatable related incidents in recent times, some of which turned out to be abandoned inflatables, but which still required search operations. HM Coastguard said: “Inflatables really should only be used in swimming pools, not at the coast where they can quickly go from being fun to being potentially deadly.”

PATCHWORK SAIL

Jeckells the Sailmakers has come up with a unique and creative way of using up small leftover pieces of brightly coloured spinnaker nylon by sewing them together to create a ‘patchwork quilt’ effect asymmetric chute. Chris Jeckells, MD, said: “Although these sails would be made of offcuts, as opposed to us having to order fabric, there is clearly a fair bit of time in both getting the yarn orientation correct and sewing them together, so it is not necessarily a cheaper option than a normal cruising chute. It is, however, one that is totally unique.”

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde AFTER much build-up the Golden Globe Race fleet set sail on their 30,000 mile adventure on 1 July, but the race is already following the trend of the original 1968 edition with competitors retiring and having mechanical issues. Perhaps what is surprising is the number so early on. At the time of writing 13 are left racing out of the starting 18. The good news is that Susie Goodall remains, the sole UK competitor left. Another golden event, although this time firmly on land, is next month’s Southampton Boat Show, which is celebrating its golden anniversary – 50 years of bringing us the latest boats and kit. How many years have you been going to this highlight of the boat show calendar? We would love to see your photos from across the years. You can expect lots of special events and touches during the show to mark this impressive milestone. It is all the more poignant following the news, just a few months ago, that there will be no London Boat Show in 2019. What is London’s loss will no doubt be Southampton’s gain, and we look forward to many more years of this great event. Are you heading abroad this month, perhaps going with family? In an interesting survey, Royal Caribbean found that by the time they are 10, British children have flown long haul three times and visited four European cities. I was eight when I first left the UK, and so definitely was not well travelled by the age of 10. How about you? It is wonderful how much easier (and more affordable) it is to travel these days, and there are always great deals

to be found. Turn to our holiday page for a few ideas from Greece and Croatia to the Caribbean. Or, closer to home, on page 25 Cruising Association member John Brand shares an extract from his ‘retirement’ voyage from Scotland to Norway. It is coming up to a year since the devastating hurricanes in the Caribbean and many affected areas are back up and running and, in an area so reliant on tourism, they are eager to see visitors return. In a region prone to hurricanes it is positive to hear that the government has announced measures to ensure British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean have the support they need should there be a repeat of the destructive hurricanes. Back home and there has been a great deal of excitement and celebrations following the conclusion of the 11-month Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in Liverpool. Thousands of spectators watched the thrilling sprint to the finish, with a number of additional events taking place on and off the water over the course of several days. Congratulations to all the teams, but there could only be one winner, and that was Wendy Tuck, skipper of Sanya Serenity Coast, and the race’s first female winner. Turn to page 37 to read our Q&A with Mark Light, Clipper Race Director, and find out which team stood out for him. Enjoy the rest of the summer, whether at home or holidaying, and do not forget to send us your photos! Jane Hyde, Editor

THUNDERCAT RACING IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN Image: Jerry Lake

THERE was a celebrity twist at round five of the RYA P750 ThunderCat Racing British Championship, the Solent Longhaul, when the sport also played host to the filming of a segment of Sky’s popular TV show A League of Their Own hosted by James Corden. The show’s stars, Freddie Flintoff, Jamie Redknapp, Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis, thought they were going to have an easy ride when they headed to Universal Marina for a safety briefing

and training… expecting to go out and race much larger powerboats. However the directors gave them a shock and announced that they would be racing the much smaller and dynamic ThunderCat boats. After training, two teams raced off against each other from the parade Cowes Beach. You will have to wait until September to find out who won. Following the celebrity race was round five of the RYA P750 ThunderCat Racing British

Championship. Called the Solent Longhaul, this event is a departure from the usual type of ThunderCat Racing. Instead of the normal rough and tumble of offshore racing, the ThunderCat powerboats faced a gruelling 100km across the Solent reaching speeds of up to 70mph. Winning the Prostock race were Multispark Onyx (Bligh Julius & Will Gawn) who benefited from racing on home turf. www.thundercatracing.com

A GOLDEN YEAR THIS year TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show celebrates its golden anniversary. Over the last 50 years it has been the launchpad for boating legends, seen the evolution of ground-breaking

technology and tracked the rise of global marine brands. Taking place from 14 - 23 September, this year’s show is expected to have more than 100 debuts and at least 500 exhibitors, of which 81 will be new to

the show. This year’s event will also showcase pioneering environmental research. The boat show will mark the 50th anniversary of the first singlehanded non-stop circumnavigation of the globe with Sir Robin KnoxJohnston’s Suhaili on display. Plus, sporting stars and celebrity supporters of the event over the last 50 years will be welcomed and there will be a touch of the late 1960s in the new Guinness Bar and refreshments area. In addition, any golden couples from Southampton celebrating their 50th anniversary during the show will gain free entry to the event. LADIES DAY AT COWES WEEK

IN the year marking 100 years since women were given the vote, Lendy Ladies Day will return to the regatta on 7 August with a celebration of female talent on the water to inspire more women to take up sailing as a sport. Lendy Ladies Day 2018 will culminate in the presentation of the Ladies Day Trophy at an evening reception, which will be attended by famous faces from the world of sailing, as well as celebrity and VIP guests. The five nominees for 2018 are:  Dee Caffari - Record breaking round the world sailor Dee was the only British skipper in the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race. Dee is also the first woman to have sailed single-handed in both directions around the world.  Libby Greenhalgh - Navigator on Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag in the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race and Director of Operations for The Magenta Project, Libby strives to enable women to have equal access and opportunities to sailing.  Lucy MacGregor - Olympian Lucy has twice skippered her crew on Team Mac to win the Women’s Match Racing World Championships.

Image: CWL/Paul Wyeth

 Tracy Edwards - Setting the standard 28 years ago as skipper of Maiden in the Whitbread Round the Word Race with an all-female crew and recently launching the Maiden Factor Foundation, a charity to help educate and empower young girls around the world.  Lucy Hodges - A blind sailor, Lucy has been an inspiring sporting figure for many years and has won numerous international sailing awards. Ladies Day was introduced for the first time in 2006 to champion the role of women in sailing and to celebrate both female achievement and participation in the sport. There are some 8,000 competitors taking part in the regatta and around a third of them are female. Sailing is one of the few mainstream sporting events where men and women can compete on equal terms and the strength of female competitors has grown with a 150 per cent increase in female skippers over the last decade. Once again ladies at the event, both on the water and shoreside, will be encouraged to dress in navy-and-white stripes, and prizes will be on offer around the event for those sporting the nautical dress code. Lendy Cowes Week takes place from 4 - 11 August. www.lendycowesweek.co.uk

BLUEBIRD RETURNS TO SWITZERLAND On 1 September 1937 Malcolm Campbell set a record of 126.32mph and the next day improved on this at 129.5mph This time, during its 10 runs over the 1km course, the boat achieved a speed of 52mph in very choppy conditions. Karl Foulkes-Halbard said “We did a total of 10 runs, with increasing chop towards the end of the session. The boat ran very well, with all temperature readings as normal and made for an exhilarating ride, a unique experience for the pilot. “It was all about achieving the vision and dream of my father, Paul, of running K3 on Lake Maggiore again and I am the second person in history to pilot the boat on this lake after Sir Malcolm Campbell.”

Image: Lisa Beaney Photography

MALCOLM Campbell’s world record breaking boat, Bluebird K3, has once again run on Lake Maggiore, Switzerland, 80 years after its last record breaking run. Bluebird K3, owned and driven by Karl Foulkes-Halbard, was taken to Switzerland to take part in the Luci e Ombre festival in Locarno. In 1937 Sir Malcolm Campbell commissioned a powerboat to attempt to break the world water speed record which was held by America. He used the same Rolls Royce type R supercharged racing aero engine that was fitted to his car when he achieved the land speed record two years earlier. The boat was named Bluebird K3.

BACK IN BUSINESS

OYSTER Yachts has completed the first yacht which had been ordered under previous management before the business went into administration. Along with the Oyster 575, the company has agreed contracts to complete almost all of the orders which had been underway. Oyster CEO Richard Hadida said: “With the completion of our first yacht, I am proud to say Oyster is firmly back in business. With 12 more legacy vessels currently under construction and new orders coming in all the time, we look forward to christening many more Oysters with a champagne welcome in the months and years to come.”

In further news, following a new partnership, newly built Oyster Yachts will carry a Lloyd’s Register moulding certificate upon completion. Yachts in production will be inspected by a Lloyd’s Register surveyor once a week. Oyster will be the only British builder of sub 24m sailing yachts to carry out such high-level certification. Mould production is also being brought in-house with the opening of a new facility in Norfolk. The production facility is expected to open next month, with the first Lloyd’s Register certified yachts to begin moulding then.

NEWS SNAPS BOATY’S BACK

The polar research ship which the public voted to call Boaty McBoatface, but was named RRS Sir David Attenborough, has been launched into the River Mersey by Sir David. The 92-year-old said: “It was an extraordinarily emotional moment. To think that it is going to go to the other end of the globe and do such valuable work and carry so many people from this country who will be working to find out all they can about the working of our planet is a marvellous thought.” Boaty McBoatface lives on in the form of a miniature, unmanned, yellow submarine on board the boat, which will be operated by the British Antarctic Survey.

BORIS’ BUOY

During a visit to the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, the then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson stood alongside a range of floats and submersible tools to highlight a new partnership between government departments. As well as a Met Office Buoy named Buoyris Johnson, the then Foreign Secretary saw the robotic submersible that hit the headlines in 2016 after being named Boaty McBoatface.

RESCUE MISSION

Image: RNLI/George Chastney The towering mast on a 41ft yacht came crashing down in mid-Solent leading to Cowes RNLI lifeboat and Gosport independent lifeboat racing to the scene. The mast, together with sails and rigging, was left hanging over the starboard side of Amalie, though the four occupants of the yacht escaped injury. The mast, sails and rigging were allowed to sink to the sea bed with a line attached to a marker buoy to ensure they could be safely recovered.

FANS ALL WIGHT

According to the Southern Daily Echo, a rowing boat with three people on board capsized while trying to watch the American band The Killers at the Isle of Wight Festival. Cowes RNLI and coastguard were called, although two were rescued by another boat and another reached the river bank near Newport Rowing Club. All were taken to ambulances by lifeboat before being taken to hospital.

NEWS SNAPS WELCOME HOME

After leaving the Cemre shipyard in Yalova, Turkey in mid July the £30 million Wightlink flagship Victoria of Wight is due to arrive in the Solent in early August. Powered by hybrid energy, the ferry will be quieter and with fewer emissions than other vessels. Wightlink chief executive, Keith Greenfield, said: “This is the final stage of our £45million investment in the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route and we look forward to introducing her to our staff and customers this summer.”

HAVE YOUR SAY

Boat owners who keep or use a boat on waterways managed by the Environment Agency are being encouraged to have their say in plans to increase charges. A public consultation into proposed increases to boat registration charges for 2019-20 and 2020-21 will run until 30 August. The proposed charges form part of plans to create a financially sustainable service on waterways used by almost 30,000 boats. Currently the cost of running the service far exceeds the income generated from charges.

HM COASTGUARD ADOPTS RYA SAFETRX RYA SafeTrx has been announced as HM Coastguard’s new official voluntary safety identification scheme. The free RYA SafeTrx mobile app and website now supersedes the HM Coastguard CG66 scheme. RYA SafeTrx app is designed to improve safety at sea and potentially cut vital minutes off the time taken to pinpoint a casualty’s location. It monitors boat journeys and alerts designated emergency contacts should you fail to arrive on time. Using iPhone and Android smartphone technology, this free tracking and alerting system is easily accessible and ideal for everyone who enjoys being on the water.

RYA SafeTrx is free to download from the Apple app store or Google Play. For customers who do not wish to use the mobile app, there is an option to register their details online at https://safetrx.rya.org.uk/login.html.

THEY have 30,000 miles to sail over the next nine to 10 months, but judging from the start of the 2018 Golden Globe solo non-stop around the world yacht race from Les Sables d’Olonne, the leaders will be fighting over every mile. First to cross the line was the competitive Frenchman Philippe Péché aboard his Rustler 36 PRB. Péché pulled out a 100m lead within minutes of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, winner of the first GGR 50 years before, firing the cannon from the deck of his historic yacht Suhaili. Britain’s Susie Goodall, who raised by far the biggest send-off from the dock, kept her Rustler 36 DHL Starlight well clear of other yachts and made a good mid fleet start. However, Italian Francesco Cappelletti, whose late preparations delayed his departure with the rest of the fleet announced his withdrawal from the race. The uphill struggle to complete safety inspections and a 360 mile solo trial sail proved too great. The rules allow for one breach of the strict solo, non-stop unassisted circumnavigation without the aid of modern electronic navigation aids regulations that make this race unique. Those that do, move down to the Chichester Class as if, like Sir Francis Chichester in 1966/7, they have made one stop during their solo circumnavigation. Those who breach the rules for a second time are deemed to have retired from the GGR and the organisers have no responsibility or obligation to them. They will, however, continue to be tracked as independent Carozzo sailors. This is in deference to Alex Carozzo, the Italian entrant in the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. So, Francesco Cappelletti will continue his round the globe adventure as an independent Carozzo sailor and, no longer constrained by the GGR rules, can carry modern navigation aids including GPS and a satellite phone. His positions will also be maintained on the GGR tracker and the GGR organisers may give occasional reports. Early in the Golden Globe Race Ertan Beskardes, the Turkish-born British skipper from Bournemouth informed Race HQ by satellite that he was pulling out for personal reasons. Later, he informed followers on Facebook: “Not talking to my family regularly to share the daily experiences has sadly taken the joy and happiness from this experience. These feelings gradually got worse until nothing else mattered except to talk to them.

“This was not an experience I was prepared for and this decision was the hardest I have ever had to make in my life. I love solo sailing but felt very lonely with no contact.” Ertan pulled into La Corunna where his wife joined him. Another factor that may have swayed his decision was the fact that his HF radio was not working, which would have left him at a disadvantage communicating with the outside world and receiving weather forecasts from a worldwide network of Ham radio enthusiasts. Other sailors have been dealing with their own issues. Just over two weeks in and Susie Goodall found that the solar panels on her yacht were not working and then took a following wave on board which flooded the cabin. Around the same time Australia’s Kevin Farebrother pulled out of the race, disillusioned by solo sailing and lack of sleep. “For me it is like getting into the back seat of a moving car to sleep when no-one is at the wheel. As a result, I have had very little sleep over the past two weeks… My boat is now for sale!” Antoine Cousot decided to pull in to Marina Rubicon to make repairs, sacrificing his place in the Golden Globe Race. As a result, the Frenchman was the first to be demoted to the Chichester Class. Later Nabil Amra, the US based Palestinian sailing the Biscay 36 Liberty II, formally announced his retirement from the race after reaching Tenerife. Fellow American Istvan Kopar has received a 24-hour time penalty for inappropriate use of his satellite phone and the outside assistance gained relating to navigation advice received. At the time of going to press just 13 of the original 17 starters are still competing in the Golden Globe Race with Philippe Péché (FRA), Jean- Luc Van Den Heede (FRA) and Mark Slats (NED) holding the top positions with Susie Goodall is in fourth. Péché, Van Den Heede and Slats are already a week ahead of Sir Robin KnoxJohnston’s average daily distance 50 years ago and on par with Moitessier’s time in his larger 40ft Joshua. goldengloberace.com/en Boatshed.com will give a £5,000 prize for the fastest skipper around the world – the same amount that the Sunday Times newspaper posted for its race 50 years ago. NEWS SNAPS PLASTIC BOTTLES

According to waste management agency, BusinessWaste.co.uk, mineral water bottles should be put in the recycling after use rather than being re-filled. In a straw poll of more than 1,500 people who drink bottled water daily, BusinessWaste.co.uk found 43 per cent reuse single-use plastic bottles. Image: Trash-Tiki In a bid to help save our oceans, a raft made of plastic waste sailed for four days to raise awareness. Trash-Tiki, made of plastic waste, ghost net and driftwood found in the Baltic Sea, left the shores of Sweden to sail 90nm in rough conditions. On board were experienced adventurers Sören Kjellqvist, Glenn Mattsing and Joakim Odelberg. Trash-Tiki comes with a strong message to politicians to put a global focus on our ocean and marine resources.

SCALE OF PLASTIC POLLUTION On board Turn the Tide on Plastic collecting data during the Volvo Ocean Race. Image: Jeremie Lecaudey/Volvo Ocean Race

AT the end of the Volvo Ocean Race, out of a total of 68 samples taken during the course of the race, only two, collected south of Australia and east of Argentina, have been found to contain no microplastics. The highest levels of microplastic found so far, 349 particles per cubic metre, were found in a sample taken in the South China Sea that feeds into the Kurushio Current and the North Pacific Gyre. The next highest levels, 307 particles per cubic metre, were found at the point where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet.

Dr. Toste Tanhua, of GEOMAR Institute for Ocean Research Kiel, said: “Unfortunately, almost all the samples contained microplastics, meaning that the plastics are carried with ocean currents to the most remote parts of the world’s oceans.” Microplastics are often invisible to the naked eye and can take thousands of years to degrade. By collecting information on their levels, the Volvo Ocean Race Science Programme is helping scientists gain insight into the scale of plastic pollution and its impact upon marine life.

OCEANS ALLIANCE CRUISING GURU WELCOMED FOUR more countries have signed up to UK and Vanuatuled efforts to tackle ocean plastic, announced Environment Minister Thérèse Coffey as she hosted the first meeting of the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance. The Alliance aims to unite countries around the Commonwealth so they can work together to turn the tide on plastic entering the marine environment. Australia, Fiji, Kenya and St Lucia have now formally joined alongside New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Ghana. Thérèse Coffey said: “By joining together the expertise and ambitions of the Commonwealth countries, we can make huge strides towards

eliminating all single use plastic from our oceans.” Minster Coffey also outlined the assistance available from the UK to support Commonwealth countries through the £61.4million Commonwealth Oceans Plastic Package. The UK Government continues to lead the way in tackling plastic, with one of the world’s strongest bans on microbeads introduced in June and nine billion fewer bags distributed thanks to the 5p plastic bag charge. Environment Secretary Michael Gove has also outlined plans to end the sale of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds and introduce a deposit return scheme, subject to consultation.

The Suffolk Section of the Cruising Association is welcoming back cruising guru Jimmy Cornell to the Royal Harwich Yacht Club in Woolverstone, near Ipswich, on 3 November. In a jointly hosted one-day seminar, Jimmy’s daughter Doina Cornell will also be sharing her family cruising experiences. An accomplished sailor and successful author, Jimmy Cornell has sailed more than 200,000 miles in all oceans of the world including three circumnavigations and voyages to Antarctica, Patagonia, Alaska, Greenland, Arctic Canada and Spitsbergen. As the founder of the highly successful ARC transatlantic rally, Jimmy is credited with having devised the offshore cruising rally concept. A broad range of topics are on the agenda for the day. CA members and members of the Royal Harwich YC are being given priority booking throughout August at a discounted fee of £35 including refreshments and lunch. The cost then rises to £40 for members and

VENDEE BOAT ON ITS WAY

NEWS SNAPS BRITISH MARINE CEO

Lesley Robinson has been appointed CEO of British Marine. Lesley has both UK and international experience in public, non-marine as well as leisure marine sectors. Greg Munford, acting president at British Marine, said: “I am delighted that British Marine has managed to attract a proven senior executive to the post of CEO. I am looking forward to working with Lesley and the non-executive board during the next 12 months as President.” www.britishmarine.co.uk

IMOCA INVITED Jason Carrington and Alex Thomson. Image: Alex Thomson Racing

ALEX Thomson Racing has announced that it will build an IMOCA 60 race boat in the south of England. The boat, HUGO BOSS, will be constructed by Carrington Boats; Jason Carrington is one of the most accomplished specialists in the industry. The project marks a multi-million pound investment by Alex Thomson Racing, together with long term partner HUGO BOSS, as it looks to make history by becoming the first British team ever to win the Vendée Globe, a solo, non-stop, unassisted race around the world. The build will take place at Carrington Boats Ltd’s new facility in Hythe, Hampshire and will replace the team’s current IMOCA 60 with a launch scheduled for June 2019. Skipper Alex Thomson said: “Finishing the last Vendée Globe in second place, with only one foil for the majority of

the race, demonstrated just what our existing boat is capable of. Now, it is about bettering that performance but also producing a package that is reliable enough to finish the race, and that is as much to do with how the boat is built, as how it is designed. “Jason and Carrington Boats have assembled a hugely talented team of boat builders, whom I know will search relentlessly for the lightest, strongest and most reliable boat possible.” Alex Thomson Racing’s relationship with Carrington began in 2007 when the team commissioned its first major project with the builder. The boat, crewed by Alex and Andrew Cape, went on to break the world 24 hour speed record and secure a second place finish in the 2007-2008 Barcelona World Race. www.alexthomsonracing.com

CLUB POWERS AHEAD A Plymouth business has come up with a way for wannabe boaters to get on the water this summer and enjoy the use of a new motorboat for less than £100 a day. Yacht Haven Quay, a Plymstock boatyard which is home to the UK’s largest ‘indoor marina’, has launched a Boat Club. Manager Will Rahder says the idea came from the shared economy concept, led by the likes of AirBnB and Uber. “Everyone wants to enjoy being on the water, but modern trends show that ownership of boats is decreasing, much in the same way as cars and homes,” Will explained. “So we decided to create a boat club where members can simply use a really high quality and versatile boat as they wish, and we will look after all the other elements that come with ownership such as maintenance, depreciation and storage.”

The boatyard has added extra safety features to a new 7m Beneteau Barracuda motorboat to satisfy MCA approval. As a result, users only need a standard RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification to take the boat out and any necessary training can be arranged as part of their membership. Will is hoping that the scheme will inspire families and younger generations to get afloat: “Everyone in the marine industry is trying to make boating more accessible and to inspire the next generation of water users. “We are certainly hoping that our new boat club allows families around Plymouth and further afield to enjoy low cost, hassle-free boating. We are confident that once families have experienced the fun of getting out on the water, they will be hooked for life!” yachthavens.com/boatclub

IMOCA 60 boats have been invited to participate in the next Volvo Ocean Race. A partnership agreement has been made with the International Monohull Open Class Association, which provides the exclusivity to use the IMOCA 60 for crewed round the world yacht races. “This is a first step of many in preparing for the next edition of the race in 2021,” said Johan Salen, copresident of the race.

CUP CHALLENGERS CONFIRMED THE final day of the initial challenging period for the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada was 30 June, and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron subsequently confirmed three Challenges have been received and accepted within the terms of the Protocol of the 36th America’s Cup. The entries are in accordance with the America’s Cup Deed of Gift to challenge the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and its representative team, Emirates Team New Zealand. The three teams are Circolo della vela Sicilia (Italy), represented by Luna Rossa Challenge, the Challenger of Record, New York Yacht Club (USA), represented by American Magic and Royal Yacht

Squadron Racing (UK), represented by INEOS TEAM UK. However, there are additional interested parties who have until 30 November to enter, although late entries must submit an additional fee of $1 million. Steve Mair, Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, said: “We are thrilled to have three very high quality challengers confirmed for the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland. It is going to be a fantastic spectacle with this calibre of teams and cutting edge yachts that the world has never seen. We welcome any further challengers from the teams that we are currently in talks with.” While the Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton has confirmed he is in

negotiations with other teams, he did also say that the announced budget by Sir Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK of $217 million (NZL) has hurt the enthusiasm of other possible entrants. However, Grant does still hope to see two more challengers enter, which would fill the allotted facilities available for the 2021 competition. Grant added that Team NZ is willing to assist them with the design and set up, but reiterated that money is not everything. “My answer to them is to use the Emirates Team New Zealand example, we were always the smaller team and look what you can do in a lot of cases with half the resource.” www.americascup.com

BRITAIN’S INEOS TEAM UK, representing Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, have officially entered the 36th America’s Cup in their bid to win sport’s oldest international trophy for Britain in 2021. Despite 21 past British challenges, 167 years has passed and Britain has still not won the trophy. In the few months since INEOS put their full support behind the British challenge, the team has been quietly recruiting some of the best America’s Cup sailors and designers. New recruits include Iain Jensen (AUS) who joins fellow Olympic

gold medallists Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott, taking the tally of Olympic medals in the sailing team to six golds and two silver. Across the team there is a wealth of America’s Cup experience including 16 America’s Cup wins. The team’s CEO, Grant Simmer, leads the way having competed in 10 Cups, winning four. Sailing Team Manager Jono Macbeth is a three times America’s Cup winner, with two times winner Joey Newton having joined the team as a trimmer. The team’s Chief Designer Nick Holroyd has been working on some major new

signings including Rolf Vrolijk (NED); 2003 and 2007 America’s Cup winner and cofounder of famed yacht design firm Judel/ Vrolijk. Rolf was Chief Designer for Alinghi, who brought the America’s Cup back to Europe in 2003, the first time since 1851. Other new recruits to the design team include Len Imas (USA), Hal Youngren (USA) and Gautier Sergent (FRA), a R&D director and lead designer with North Sails. Imas and Youngren, who competed together with ETNZ during the AC34 and Oracle Team USA during the AC35, both bring hydro and aerodynamic expertise - along

with their Cup experience - with Imas also having designed for three Volvo Ocean Races, the Vendee Globe and Jules Verne Trophy. Pre-dating the modern Olympics, the Ryder Cup and the World Cup, the America’s Cup started with a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. The 36th edition of the Cup will take place in Auckland in 2021 and will be raced in a 75ft foiling monohull, called the AC75. Jim Ratcliffe, INEOS Chairman, said: “The America’s Cup is one of the world’s most competitive yacht races and Britain has never won it, despite founding the competition over 150 years ago. With the team we have assembled, we believe we can get a fully competitive boat to the start line. “After that it is all down to the fine art of sailing. Ben is arguably the best sailor that Britain has ever produced so we should have a fighting chance of success.” Team principal and skipper, Ben Ainslie, said: “Since the last America’s Cup we have developed as a team, learning from the last campaign and making necessary changes. “We are now in a really strong position to challenge and I am excited about the team’s prospects. With the right people, the backing of Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, it is now down to us as team to execute a winning campaign.” The sailing team are currently back out on the racing scene, competing on the European GC32 Racing Tour and finished third place overall at the recent GC32 Lagos Cup in Portugal. ineosteamuk.com

PODIUM FOR SIR BEN Third place overall for Ben Ainslie in INEOS TEAM UK’s first GC32 Racing Tour event. Image: Jesus Renedo / GC32 Racing Tour

SIR Ben Ainslie’s INEOS TEAM UK took an unexpected third place in the team’s first GC32 Racing Tour event. Franck Cammas, who last year skippered his French team in the America’s Cup, took the overall win, though, with his NORAUTO team. As a newcomer to the class, for Ben Ainslie and INEOS TEAM UK it was a frustrating few days learning what for them is a new boat on a new race circuit,

but it ended on a high, when they won the final race. Not only did the British team win that last race, but they also managed to displace the Jérôme Clercskippered Realteam from the bottom step of the GC32 Lagos Cup podium. In all but one race on the final day Ben Ainslie attempted hair raising port tack starts. These involved shaving transoms and on a couple of occasions the anchor chain of the race committee boat.

“All day the right hand side of the course was strong so we were pushing hard to get that port tack start,” Ben explained. “A couple of times it did not quite work, but for the last start it finally paid and we slung shot out to the right and that got us into the lead.” They managed to hang on despite some cavitation problems with one of their foils – a teething problem with their newly-acquired boat.

There were further celebrations when, in the Extreme Sailing Series™, INEOS Rebels UK finished on the podium in Cascais, Portugal for the first time this year. Ahead of the team on the podium were Alinghi in pole position followed by SAP Extreme Sailing Team. “It is a positive step forward to take third place here in Cascais,” said an enthusiastic Will Alloway, skipper for the British squad. “The conditions out there today were really testing so this is a great result for us. Each Act we are improving but there is still plenty of work to do. We are now looking forward to heading home to the UK for the next event; we are excited to race in front of home crowds in Cardiff.” INEOS Rebels UK are now fourth overall going into Act 5 in Cardiff over 24 – 27 August.

FLYACHT CONCEPT THE 2021 edition of the America’s Cup will see the radical AC75 Fly Monohull racing for the first time. The new rules were announced at the end of March, and Emirates Team New Zealand has already unveiled its design in a class that promises to be even faster than the AC50 catamarans. Philippe Briand and his team are dedicated followers of the America’s Cup, having been main designer in no fewer than six AC campaigns. He was among the first to start designing an AC75 concept and has completed a preliminary project. The flying monohull concept takes advantage of the AC’s objective to “permit technological development to spearhead the development of sailing and maintain the America’s Cup as the world’s premier sailing event.” It marries some of the best features of the multihulls, such as high speed and design innovation, with traditional monohull sailing. But instead of a keel, it has two canting, ballasted T-foils and the ability to self-right the boat in the event of a capsize. Like the catamarans, it will be able to tack and gybe on the foils. Of course, it is not only the America’s Cup that can benefit from the thrilling performance of these flying monohulls. As the new technology continues to develop and handling is fine-tuned, Briand and his team have recognised its potential over a range of sizes and budgets. With the aim of offering fly sailing to a wider general market, they have scaled down the AC concept to 6.5 metres. This required a full design study as the dimensions, surfaces, weight and lift had to be recalculated and the design re-engineered to suit the speed and loading of a hull of 6.5m.

With a 90 degree righting moment, much like a Mini Transat, the Flyacht is designed to be handled by a two-man crew with the possibility of ‘hiking’ (moving the body weight as far to windward as possible to decrease heeling when sailing upwind) before take-off speed is reached in around 10 knots of true wind speed. The rig consists of a soft wing with slab reefing for easy bag storage and in the interests of safety stability in fly mode would be self-monitored and automated, which is not permitted under the AC75 rules. Drawing on his extensive experience, Briand is looking to create a low-budget project that could be built in series by a production shipyard: “I like to be on the edge as a sailboat designer. Our role is to transfer the benefits of innovations from the racing sector to the wider market at reasonable cost. “I want to introduce the millennium generation to how much fun and excitement can be had from sailing. And the first step towards that will be watching the AC75 Fly Monohulls in action in 2021!”

FERRY RESCUE

SUPPORTING THE CARIBBEAN THE government has announced new measures to make sure British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean have the support they need in the event of a repeat of the devastating hurricanes which hit the region last year. Government departments have been putting plans in place to bring together humanitarian, military support and diplomatic work under a joint unit coordinated by the Foreign Office. Minister for Armed Forces Mark Lancaster said: “Our Armed Forces are committed to supporting our Overseas Territories, and we have worked alongside our colleagues across government to ensure we are fully prepared in the event of a natural disaster or other crisis. RFA Mounts Bay, which played a vital role during the 2017 hurricane crisis, remains ready in the Caribbean and will be supported by specialist forces from the UK if required.” £72 million was immediately committed in September to help the Overseas Territories Anguilla, BVI and the Turks and Caicos Islands. In November, the Prime Minister committed a further £70 million for reconstruction efforts and £300 million of UK loan guarantees. PRINCESS EXTENDS RANGE PRINCESS Yachts has announced six models to join their range to follow the S78, V50, V60, V65 and F70 models already launched in 2018. Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman of Princess Yachts, said: “These next six new models raise the bar much higher with unprecedented use of innovative technologies, materials, architectural concepts and design solutions; we hope to be setting the standard for yacht producers for many years to come.” The financial performance of Princess during the first half of 2018, combined with a full order book and the new launches planned for the autumn, firmly places 2018’s expected performance on track to far outstrip 2017’s record result. The launch programme and financial result is underpinned by a five-year £100 million investment programme, now into its third year and, according to Princess, fully on track. To support the rapid growth, Princess’s workforce has increased by 700 since January, bringing the total to 2,900. It is anticipated to break through 3,000 in the next 12 months, a record level of employment for the company. As a result, Princess is investing heavily to train their craftsmen and craftswomen to ensure they can continue to hit the targets and levels of quality they set themselves. The new models are the R35, F45, V55, V78, Y85, X95 ‘Super Flybridge’.

NEWS SNAPS LIFEJACKET FAILURES

Special safety checks the day before the Round the Island Race indicated that many lifejackets aboard yachts may not be as effective as their crews assumed. Cowes RNLI Lifeboat Station teamed up with Helly Hansen to provide a free lifejacket clinic at the company’s marquee on Cowes Yacht Haven. It was found that of the 32 lifejackets examined 75 percent failed safety tests and two were condemned outright.

PORT’S UPGRADE

PICTURED is the R35, the first Princess R Class performance sports yacht, which has been much hyped in recent months. Designed in partnership with Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies and Pininfarina, Princess’s most technologically advanced sports yacht is designed and hand-built in Plymouth. According to Princess, it combines revolutionary performance capabilities, stunning design, quality and race-bred technology to deliver a unique on-water experience at all speeds. Just as ‘race to road’ principles underpin the world’s greatest supercars, America’s Cup technology drives the R35’s performance. Princess Active Foil System developed with BAR Technologies optimises stability and manoeuvrability in all sea conditions, allowing for a much lower drag hull form to re-define ride comfort and high-speed cornering ability.

NEW

According to the DailyEcho the upgrade of Southampton Docks is continuing. As part of the £50 million upgrade a multi-storey car park to store cars for export is due to for completion in mid-2019. In total the port handles around 900,000 vehicles every year, of which most are exported. Alastair Welch, ABP Southampton director, said: “The investment is testimony to the performance of the Port of Southampton and will help increase the port’s vital contribution to the regional and national economy and keeping Britain trading.”

The new lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque hull structure has been designed in collaboration with legendary Italian styling house Pininfarina – a name synonymous with many of the world’s most beautiful cars. The highly advanced V8 engines produce the fastest Princess yacht to date. Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman of Princess Yachts, explained: “The R35 is a rare mix of extreme elegance and technology. Often design is a triumph of beauty over function or function over beauty. “Princess has been able to develop a technologically game-changing yacht that is also stunningly beautiful. It is in every way a new experience, yet also instantly recognisable as a Princess.” Launching: 10 September #experiencetherevolution at www.princessyachts.com

IN what will probably be regarded as one of the most challenging on record, the 87th edition of the Round the Island Race in association with Cloudy Bay was won overall by High Potential. Ross Applebey and his team, based in Lymington, sailed an impressive race in the

light, tactical conditions and after 8:30:03 was deemed the overall winner of the Gold Roman Bowl on corrected time. Commenting on his team’s win the skipper said: “We are absolutely delighted with the result! It has been an amazing day of sailing and, this year, everything we

of 8:56:47. Chatting after the race, Langley said: “It was the longest one I have ever done; nine hours on the helm which is plenty. “There were three transitions, two round the back of the island and one on the eastern Solent. These transitions from one breeze to the other were the tricky ones; a knot or so of wind, so it was a case of just keeping the boat working to get through to the new breeze.” Commenting on their efforts to catch Concise Fling on the final stretch to the finish line, Langley added: “We did not quite make it but we did have a moment when we thought we might do because they were in the transition for a lot longer.” Sponsored by Raymarine, the 2018 Young Sailor Trophy at Round the Island Race was presented to the fastest team of young sailors. The recipients, the pupils of Hampshire Collegiate School, IRC Division 3C, completed the course with a finishing time of 10:42:05. “We are pleased to be able to congratulate this team of young sailors of Hampshire Collegiate School who demonstrated their strong ability to work together and alongside their skipper, Jonathan Churchill. The Round the Island Race attracts thousands of sailors each year and it is fantastic to be able to recognise the younger sailors in the fleet,” said Harry Heasman Raymarine UK Sales and Marketing Manager. www.roundtheisland.org.uk

LIVELY LADY IS IN THE WATER AGAIN THE 36ft cutter Lively Lady is back in the water 50 years after her first single handed global circumnavigation. She is in an as new condition having recently undergone an extensive refit at Hayling Yacht Company by volunteers from the charity Around and Around. The refit work included replacing the deck, reassembling the wheelhouse, new electrics, an interior refit and a full repaint using Jotun Yachting paint products. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Alec Rose’s global circumnavigation aboard Lively Lady. A greengrocer from Portsmouth with a passion for single handed sailing, Sir Alec set sail on 16 July 1967 returning 12 months later on 4 July 1968 having circumnavigated the globe, stopping off in Australia and New Zealand. It was a year after that of Sir Francis

Chichester aboard Gypsy Moth IV, and a year before that of Sir Robin Knox Johnson in Suhali. Jim Brickwood, Business Development Manager, Jotun Yachting UK, said: “The hard work carried out by the volunteers at Around and Around has certainly paid off, with Lively Lady looking better than new and in a condition which will see her through the next 50 years. “At Jotun Yachting we are proud to have played our part in not only protecting such an iconic yacht for the future, but also bringing back her timeless beauty. We look forward to following her future circumnavigations.” You can see Lively Lady at this year’s Hamble Classics Regatta in September. www.livelylady.org www.jotun.com

NEWS SNAPS SUNSEEKER

According to Sunseeker’s chief executive Phil Popham, revenue reached £294.7million last year, with orders up 52 per cent yearon-year. This is in contrast to 2014 when the boat builder saw losses of £41m with 300 jobs lost too. Phil said: says: “We turned this business around. We have taken it back to profitability, now we intend to grow.”

CAMPAIGN TO BRING THE TITANIC ARTEFACTS HOME THE National Geographic Society and National Geographic Explorers-at-Large, Dr. Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the RMS Titanic wreck, and James Cameron, film-maker and deep sea explorer, are backing a collaboration between four organisations (Titanic Belfast, Titanic Foundation, Royal Museums Greenwich, National Museums Northern Ireland) to purchase the entirety of the Titanic Artefacts Collection and bring them home to the UK and Ireland. At Titanic Belfast, on the exact location where RMS Titanic was designed, built and launched, National Geographic Society Interim President and CEO Michael L. Ulica announced the Society’s support with a pledge of $500,000 toward the funds required to complete the bid. The unique collaboration aims to protect, preserve and unite all the artefacts, which are currently at risk

of being split up and sold. The owners of the collection have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. If successful, the bid will secure the entirety of the Titanic Artefacts Collection in public ownership in perpetuity. Additionally, the organisations seek to obtain the responsibility of salvor in possession and assign this to the National Maritime Museum and National Museum Northern Ireland to ensure the protection of the RMS Titanic wreck site. Dr. Robert Ballard said: “I am lending my voice to this campaign as it is the right thing to do. This bid is the only viable option to retain the integrity of the Titanic collection. The collection deserves to be returned home to where its journey began.” For more information or to register your support for the Titanic Artefacts Collection – Bring Them Home campaign, visit www.titanicartefactscollection.com.

NORTHERN CANALS

The Canal & River Trust has announced measures to conserve water on sections of its canals in Northern England. The Trust says 95 per cent of its canals are open for boaters to use with restrictions introduced to Leeds & Liverpool Canal in June to conserve water and plans to temporarily close part of the canal to boats between Wigan and Gargrave from 30 July. Further measures are now being implemented for Huddersfield Narrow, Rochdale, Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals.

CHARITY AWARDS

An international maritime charity has been shortlisted for charity of the year. Sailors’ Society will compete against six other organisations at the Charity Times Awards in London on 3 October. The awards recognise leadership and professionalism in charitable organisations and celebrate best practice across the sector.

POWERING AHEAD SIMON EVERETT ROUNDS UP THIS MONTH’S ENGINE NEWS. An ‘industry first’ for the V8 XTO is its fully integrated electric steering system, the first of its kind on any outboard

Suzuki has launched a new low octane capable large outboard. The DF325A is the first outboard in the world over 300hp to be able to run on 91RON fuel and as such will be of interest to those visiting areas with low octane fuel quality. Commercial operators will also be able to take advantage of the frugal fuel economy that the advanced engine management and electronic fuel injection provides from what is essentially a down rated DF350.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

Suzuki returned to Seawork this year for the UK debut of the latest outboard in its range, the DF325A

With 5.6-litres of brutal torque and thrust - and 425 horsepower – the XTO 425 is more than simply an outboard

Yamaha has pushed the boundaries yet again with the introduction of the ground breaking and fire breathing 5.6-litre, V8 monster than eclipses even the Mercury Verado 400R with its class leading 425hp output from a marine industry first, direct fuel injection that has been used in the motor industry for some years now. The XTO 425 is based on the long standing F350 outboard, with modifications to the piston and head for very high compression, over 12:1, which is comparable to highly tuned road engines. By using direct fuel injection pinking is eliminated and higher fuel burn efficiency results. A single cylinder Selva; A further improvement within she trims betteriswith some the gearcase, where anweight exhaust in the bow deflection system redirects the exhaust gas away from the propeller hub, thereby increasing astern thrust at low revs. The XTO 425 is controlled via flyby-wire inputs and so is easily compatible with joystick controls for berthing. It is due to be launched in Europe at the Genoa Boat Show in September. I understand that there is a hope that it will also be at Southampton’s show, which overlaps with the Genoa dates.

Just how reliable and sea capable these outboards are I have no idea, but I do worry about the interest being shown in them by users of small craft, especially small inflatable users, and how that might impact upon our emergency services. Perhaps I will be proved wrong about their suitability for use at sea, but their popularity does point to a demand for smaller, lighter weight outboard units. They are invariably built using very small capacity, single cylinder motors, now the single cylinder aspect is of no concern, but being of such low displacement they are working very hard and at high revs which puts greater strain on the reciprocating parts. I wonder how long they will last being pushed hard in a saltwater environment, but at least they are cheap.

GOING ELECTRIC

Future news, I know, that is an oxymoron, but Volvo-Penta has announced that it will be moving to producing all electric and hybrid electric motor units in two years’ time. This constant drive towards electric propulsion seems relentless, yet the emissions are simply being moved from the end user to a central generating position. The losses from that generation unit to the end user seem to be conveniently ignored in the quoted figures for emissions. A pure electric motor cannot be emission free; it simply does not produce them in the vehicle but at the main power station instead. There are then the mining and smelting and processing of the battery materials to factor in. The whole idea of ignoring the industrial side of the process is misleading, at best. Maybe that is something worth thinking about before deciding which route you go down. Personally, I think the whole ‘green agenda’ is a white elephant, if it is not actually a political con.

SUITABLE FOR SEA?

I have noticed how strimmer engines being used to build small outboard motors has become quite prevalent, in both ready built and home conversion kit form. They are available from various online outlets with no recognised dealer network.

Do you agree with Simon?

Let us know what you think about electric motors and their emissions. Or, if you have any other power related questions and opinions we would love to hear them. editor@allatsea.co.uk

WIN £155 WORTH OF PRODUCTS

WITH over 20 years experience in yacht cleaning Managing Director of Cleantogleam, Gary Winter, has recently developed a range of products that are both tough on unwanted debris, but at the same time, gentle on the materials that need to be protected from harmful corrosives. We clean a lot of boats and yachts every monthly and I wasn’t happy with what was on the market,” Gary explains. Gary sourced the top ten cleaning products from around the globe and took them to different chemists in the UK to find out how to make them better. Today, Cleantogleam products has seven new highly advanced cleaning products on the market. These products include Boat Wash, which is ideal for an overall exterior clean for a gleaming, streak-free finish and has been what Gary terms “scientifically engineered” to eliminate surface grime and salt build-up, while at the same time remaining gentle on those precious top coats. The Boat Wash was created not only for performance, having been tested on over a thousand boats in all conditions over the course of a year, but also in line with a green ethos and natural ingredients that aren’t harmful or damaging as Gary clarifies: “I needed a good boat wash, which was also environmentally friendly, biodegradable and could have plant extracts in.” Another product containing natural ingredients, including Carnauba wax, is the Hard Paste Wax. It is the perfect finish and follow up for an ultra-high gloss look to a gelcoat painted surface, specifically enabling durability and protection from all weather, while the Boat Polish, tested on hundreds of boats, has been developed to restore fibreglass and painted surfaces to a super shiny finish. Gary has also engineered a product specifically for RIB’s and tenders with the new RIB cleaner, ideal for fenders, buoys, PVC tubing, materials such as Hypalon and vinyl covers, and any non slip surfaces. Inside hasn’t been overlooked either with the innovative multi-purpose Interior Cleaner. Formulated purposely for a marine environment it can wipe away stains

and spills on all upholstery, carpets and vinyl right through to monkey fur and can be used in all areas such as the galley, cabins, saloon and cockpit. With the ever growing trend for more glass on board, Gary wanted a delicately developed formula specifically for boats and yachts that would get any glass, plexiglass, plastic windows, mirrors, heads and taps looking sparkling and crystal clear with a gleaming, streak-free finish and so has added The Glass Cleaner from Cleantogleam to the range. Finishing this complete boat and yacht cleaning range is the Deodoriser. Smell can so easily become an issue on board with lingering aromas from the galley but the Deodoriser promptly and efficiently wipes away any odours and bacteria leaving the interior smelling just like it should! One lucky winner will receive the full range of products along with grade sponges, a micro-fibre cloth and a bag for handy product storage.

A MATTER OF SIZE

Something of a rarity in the dinghy world, the threeperson crew (with one on the trapeze) now offers sparkling performance and high quality competition. Image: Fiona Brown

The ideal hull length of sailing dinghies is determined by a number of factors, as displayed by changing boat designs over the years. Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.

The completed wave screen at Haslar

I

n the early years of the development of the racing dinghy, Isle of Wight designer Uffa Fox and others settled on a hull length of 14ft as being the ideal size for a sailing dinghy. This length was not chosen by chance but built on a number of existing local classes that had already sprung up around our shores. A few years later, in the mid 1930s, Fox was involved in the creation of yet another new class, the National 12s, but these were considered too small to ever be able to plane at speed like their bigger sisters. GOING LARGE Then, 80 years ago in 1938, Fox got the chance to design yet another class of dinghy, only this time the boat would be much larger, at 18ft overall length. Once again, this choice of size was pre-determined to appeal to a group of sailors who were already sailing older designed boats of a similar size. Indeed, in the case of the new Eighteen-Foot class the driving force behind the initiative was a group of Whitstable based sailors who were currently sailing the Morgan Giles designed Essex One-Designs. The design brief awarded to Uffa Fox called for a dual-purpose boat that was suitable for both ordinary day sailing, yet at the same time would be ‘fast enough to interest those concerned with racing’. The brief went on to call for a modern design, with good speed, be economical (the brief actually refers to a ‘low price’) yet would be restricted to bar the development of undesirable freak types that would require athletes to sail them. In that final year of fun sailing before the

outbreak of hostilities in 1939, a dozen or so boats were built to Fox’s new design, the Ace, with these focused mainly on the Thames Estuary. Compared to the small dinghies of the day, the Eighteens were sailed three up and certainly seemed to have fulfilled all the terms of the design criteria set for Fox, including that of cost, as new boats came with the price capped at £125. INTERNATIONAL CLASS With the welcome return of peace time, regular dinghy racing would soon restart, but many of the original sailors of the Eighteens had been scattered by the circumstances of war, some to London, others to either the North West or the South Coast. Kent’s loss was to the class’s gain, as this helped spread the class with fleets springing up all around not only the UK’s coasts but in Ireland, Australia and South Africa. The hull form was stable enough for the boat to live afloat on a mooring, but this created an issue for one fleet, at Porlock Weir on the Bristol Channel, for at low tide conditions they would end up taking the ground. What was needed were rubbing strips on the bottom of the hull to protect the planks when this happened, but these were not currently allowed under the rules. The local builder and Class Representative went to London to petition the RYA, who had taken on the management of the Eighteen as one of their core ‘National’ Classes. At the meeting, the builder apologised, saying that it was only the constraint of time that had stopped him from sailing his boat

As small boat sailing exploded in popularity during the early post war years, the National 18 was right at the forefront of the ‘performance’ dinghy scene. Image: David Henshall

Classic National 18s are still raced hard, such as these great examples from Bosham Sailing Club. Image: David Henshall

to the meeting (from the Bristol Channel to the Thames) so it was with little surprise that the rules were quickly amended to allow the protecting strips. With the class flourishing, a National Championship was organised, with one of the founder clubs of the Eighteen, Medway Yacht Club, donating the Medway Bowl for the winning boat. CHANGING TIMES Yet even as the now titled National 18 flourished, developments elsewhere in the sport would impact on their wider success. In particular, the rise of performance dinghies such as the Flying Dutchman, 505, Osprey and Hornet gave rise to a new degree of athleticism in the sport, exactly the sort of development that the 18 had been targeted to avoid. The large and increasingly expensive 18s found that as the racing dinghy scene became ever more sophisticated, their niche application of being a dual-purpose boat was being taken by more modern options such as the Wayfarer. By the late 1960s wooden clinker boats started to be seen as a liability, so designer Ian Proctor was commissioned to do a rework of the lines so that hulls could be moulded in GRP. His design criteria was complicated by the demand that the new boats should not make the older wooden versions obsolete, a task that he was able to achieve allowing both versions to happily compete on a level playing field. Later, in the early 1980s, one owner built an 18 that drove the proverbial horse and cart through the rules, with a modern looking, stripped out racing hull doing little to dispel the myth that the 18 was a handicap bandit! As the class passed its 70th birthday it was clear that yet another rethink was needed and this time it would be designer Phil Morrison who would revisit not only the hull form but the rig as well. The modern looking, smooth hull, set off with carbon spars and a ‘fat top’ mainsail has brought the National 18 bang upto-date, a factor that has resulted in a healthy order book for the new boat. Yet the 18s are a class that look back as much as they look forward, with the classic wooden 18s being very much a part of the class still, with racing for boats both new and old taking place around our shores.

KEEPING SHIPWRIGHT SKILLS ALIVE

In Falmouth the marine industry is a key employer, helped by apprenticeships and initiatives to encourage young people to learn the art of boat building. winning apprenticeship programme and has trained more than 200 young men and women in the key industry trades over the past 20 years. The company has developed a four-year apprenticeship programme which includes a one year full-time course with Cornwall College, combined with blocks of practical general experience at the shipyard. In year two, an apprentice can choose the trade in which they would prefer to specialise and then go on to complete their final three years based at Pendennis Shipyard, studying skills in their specialist trade areas. Mike Carr, Managing Director at Pendennis, explained: “Just under a third of our current workforce has been trained on the company’s apprenticeship programme, including many who have progressed to senior positions such as project engineers, trade and project managers.

people, their lack of awareness of the wide and varied career prospects in the marine sector, a lack of any meaningful work experience and a poor work ethic were key issues. In response, CMN established the Cornwall Marine Academy, to deliver support to disadvantaged young people aged 14 to 24, who were not in education, training or employment (NEET). CMN has developed a range of individually tailored pre-apprenticeship support packages including online learning resources for traditional wooden boat building courses, taster sessions, one-day-perweek training embedded into the school curriculum and work placements at marine business premises including Power Fal, Mylor Yacht Harbour, Armada Hydraulics and Falmouth Yacht Brokers. Since 2007, the CMA has delivered vocational training to more than 3,500 young people across Cornwall and career advice at schools using marine business

“The leisure boating sector is in a period of growth and there will always be a demand for the right people. A skilled shipwright or engineer will find work wherever they are, so I believe it is a great career choice, especially if it can be kick-started with an apprenticeship.” Pendennis has developed an award-winning apprenticeship programme

A

new project has started to resurrect a Falmouth Pilot Cutter, rejuvenating some of the traditional skills of wooden boat building as a community programme. The ambitious project includes teaching a new generation the art of the shipwright before the skills are lost forever. The Pellew is being faithfully restored from one of the best documented and longest surviving of the cutters – the Vincent, a vessel originally built in 1852. She worked successfully for 70 years until being retired in 1922, ending her days as a houseboat. The Falmouth Pilot Cutters were built for speed and durability. Over the centuries Cornish cutters were made to perfection, developed to survive and sail in some of the wildest conditions in the seafaring world. Each carried eight pilots who would guide ships around the Scilly Isles and the treacherous Atlantic Coast into Falmouth’s harbour, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world.

“The apprenticeship scheme helps Pendennis to maintain a pipeline of fresh talent, as well as providing a more structured and practical programme of development for young people with an interest in boat and ship building.”

ESSENTIAL SUPPORT

Falmouth Marine School is a leading educator in the area for courses and apprenticeships in marine engineering and boat building

During the 1600s and for 150 years, Falmouth played a key role in global communications as a packet station and had a flourishing ship building industry. Its maritime industry is still one of the area’s biggest sources of employment with several boat builders having their headquarters there, including luxury superyacht builder Pendennis and other leisure boat builders including Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding, Rustler Yachts and the Falmouth Boat Company. All of these are keen to nurture younger talent and ensure the skills of boat building continue for generations to come. Pendennis, one of the area’s largest employers, has developed an awardA project to resurrect a Falmouth Pilot Cutter sees the traditional skills of wooden boat building being rejuvenated

As one of the major employers in the area, employing more than 440 craftsmen and support staff, a structured programme makes a lot of sense, but for smaller boat builders and marine engineering firms, there are several supporting organisations that can help them train and attract young people into the industry. Falmouth Marine School, part of the Cornwall College Group, is recognised as one of the leading educators in the region for courses and apprenticeships in marine engineering and boat building. Students are equipped with both traditional and modern boat building techniques, and it is the only place where students can gain specialist training with access to practical experience across a wide range of boat building yards and projects, including the Pellew Project. Going beyond training for school leavers and developing an interest in the marine sector within schools is Cornwall Marine Network, also based in Falmouth. CMN is a not-for-profit organisation owned by more than 350 member businesses and dedicated to supporting the marine sector in Cornwall via initiatives that improve profitability and encourage growth through quality, innovation and workforce development.

ACADEMY ESTABLISHED

In 2007, CMN identified a need to find solutions to problems reported by marine employers when trying to employ young people. A steady fall in the employability skills of young

ambassadors to more than 30,000 young people.

GUIDING BUSINESSES

The Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency, which is a subsidiary of CMN, helps to broker potential progression for young people into apprenticeships in the marine sector. The team of skills brokers guide marine businesses through the journey of taking on apprentices and helps enable the natural progression from pre-apprentice training into full time employment via accredited apprenticeship programmes of learning with the opportunity to provide employer incentives to invest in apprentices. As a member of CMN, Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding takes advantage of the courses and support they offer and work with Falmouth Marine School to find the recruits the need. Dave Cockwell, Founder and MD of Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding, said: “It is a continuous struggle to find more skilled boat builders, engineers and craftsmen, so we are very aware that we need to play an active role in attracting more young people to the industry if we want to find the skillsets we require.” When asked whether he thinks boat building is a career for life, Dave concluded: “The leisure boating sector is in a period of growth and there will always be a demand for the right people. A skilled shipwright or engineer will find work wherever they are, so I believe it is a great career choice, especially if it can be kick-started with an apprenticeship.” Words: Falmouth Marine School INFORMATION Web: www.Falmouth.co.uk Facebook: @FalmouthCornwallUK Twitter: @FalmouthTownUK Instagram: @LoveFalmouth

EXPERTS’ FORUM

Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.

PREPARING FOR THE SUMMER CRUISE undertake and needs quite a bit more planning. Starting with the route and destination and - in as much as weather and sea conditions allow - a passage plan. Next, the catering, packing and all manner of creature comforts. Finally it is time to check that everything works, get any last minute servicing done and to have spares and tools for all major eventualities. In this category should be the most important bit of preparation of all safety planning and safety equipment.

STEVE BOCKETT, OCEAN SAFETY TRAINING MANAGER, HELPS SAILORS PREPARE FOR THEIR SUMMER CRUISES. During the summer many boat owners, with their families and friends, head off for a bit of a cruise. The traditional summer cruise is longer than the average weekend or overnight outing that most sailors

EQUIPMENT CHECKS Your yacht will most likely be equipped with all the basics already: lifejackets, VHF radio, flares, first aid kit and horseshoe lifebuoy. Bigger yachts and those doing regular long voyages may well carry liferafts, EPIRBs and personal man overboard location and recovery devices, which can be fixed to an oilskin jacket or lifejacket. If you do not own a liferaft or do not often leave coastal waters, but your voyage involves some longer offshore sailing, then you should consider hiring a liferaft. The typical cost to hire a four-person liferaft from, say, Ocean Safety for a fortnight is £100, while purchasing it costs from £1,806. So if that is the only time you

need it, it makes sense to go down the hire route. An added bonus it that you do not need to worry about servicing. Checking all the rest of the equipment is important too. Flares go out of date, as do the bobbins that automatically inflate lifejackets. Check them all and take them to your local service agent, which could be your nearest chandlery, or give Ocean Safety a call for advice. PLANNING AHEAD It is all very well having an extensive inventory of operational safety equipment, but using it in an emergency is another

Before your trip, ensure you have the necessary safety equipment

matter altogether. Start your planning by considering who is going to be on the boat with you. Are you the most experienced person on board? If so, and you were to fall overboard, the remaining crew need to have a drill ready to recover you, that they will be able to execute and also have the physical strength to complete. Remember some of your crew might be youngsters or more elderly. In the days before you head off, invite them on board when no one is in a rush, and show the crew where everything is stowed and make sure they can access it all. Run through how everything works and get them to give you a demo once you have explained it. Make photocopies of instructions for them to keep. Get everyone fitted for a lifejacket and put their names on a bit of sail tape to attach to each. Carry out an all-important man overboard drill. If you have recovery items such as the Jonbuoy or Danbouy deploy these and also work out the favoured way of getting the person in the water back on to the boat, for instance using a halyard or a stern ladder. Knowing you are as prepared as you can be means you can keep safe, relaxed and enjoy the holiday. SUNSHINE AT MIDNIGHT Motoring in the Western Fjords

M

y wife Kyla and I celebrated my retirement by abandoning the West Coast of Scotland and heading off to Norway for 10 weeks and more than 2,000 miles on our Westerly Oceanranger Sula. We enjoyed a wonderful summer of jaw-dropping scenery, easy sailing, fascinating places and friendly people. Crossing the North Sea in late May from Shetland to Ålesund, we sailed north to the Lofoten Islands, 100 miles above the Arctic Circle, before turning back and following the coast all the way to Sweden and finally Denmark. Sula’s centre cockpit and in-mast furling make her safe and easy for two of us to handle, with plenty of room for living aboard and entertaining friends who joined us during the cruise. There is also space to stash the wagon loads of stores we bought in Shetland to avoid paying a jarl’s ransom for supplies in Norway.

SETTING SAIL

With friends Richard and Robbo aboard, we had a storming beam reach across the North Sea in nearperfect conditions. Late evening landfall the next day revealed a jagged and surprisingly snowy landscape, and we arrived in Ålesund in bright sunshine at 3am. From Ålesund we set off for the fjords with a trip to the fishing village of Volda, about 30 miles away. The village harbour was typical of dozens we would see over the next few weeks, with a mass of tiny fishing boats, a few motor cruisers and a couple of small yachts. Though just about every Norwegian has a boat, they are normally used either for fishing or for simply getting around and the idea of sailing for fun is still a bit alien! Leaving Volda, we began our route north. Apart from three short stretches, the entire length of the Norwegian coast is protected from the open sea by an almost unbroken chain of islands. The Inner Passage or ‘Indreleia’ extends for more than 1,000 miles, providing sheltered sailing, hundreds of small harbours and limitless anchorages.

DANGEROUS WAVES?

With Robbo and Richard jumping ship in Molde, Kyla and I were on our own for the first time since leaving the Clyde. We faced the Hustadvika, one of the three stretches of coast not sheltered by islands, and featuring prominent red warnings of ‘dangerous waves’ on the chart. As it turned out we had an almost flat sea and only a light breeze, resolutely in our faces. 15 miles on we took a diversion through the islands and, slipping under the bridge carrying the ‘Atlantic Road’, we had a beautiful sail to Kristiansund through glorious scenery in warm sunshine. Continuing north we stopped in various remote anchorages. One morning the routine check revealed a pool of antifreeze-coloured water under the engine. After a tense sail to the nearest town of Brekstad, with the help of the CA Tech Forum I diagnosed a leaking heat exchanger. An unscheduled couple of days waiting for a new part gave us an excuse to explore Trondheim and have a night off the boat – which for some reason Kyla seemed almost to welcome.

BACK TO FOUR

Joined by our friends Neil and Aideen, we set off north again. As we headed up a fjord the wind jumped from almost nothing to a bouncy 25+ knots. Ducking into nearby Setervagen, a scruffy ittle place full of identical miniature fishing boats, we found a line of huts inhabited by very

drunk Austrians on a fishing holiday. A lively swell was running next morning, and the route north involved a twisty but well-marked channel between hundreds of small islands. By 5pm the wind had died, and we motored into Rorvik to moor behind a lovely old wooden boat The must-have built in Blairmore – three miles CA App. Image: Beryl Chalmers from Sula’s home mooring in Holy Loch! The next few days gave us mixed weather but superb scenery, including the extraordinary Torgetshatten, ‘the mountain with a hole in the middle’. A climb from the small visitors’ pontoon was well worth the effort: the hole was spectacular - 60m high and 100m long - with superb views. Neil and Aideen were flying back from Moesjoen, and we bashed up the long fjord towards it in sheeting rain against 20+ knots of headwind. Instead of the magnificent mountain views promised in the guidebook, we could see about 50m of rain-polished rock rearing out of the sea, with innumerable cascades sluicing off into the fjord.

ARCTIC CIRCLE

On Midsummer’s Day we crossed the Arctic Circle, sailing in sunshine ABOVE: Bud, a typical Norwegian fishing village HERE: Experiencing some midnight sun...

Cruising Association mem er ohn Brand shares an extract from his memora le retirement’ voyage with his wife from Scotland to Norway.

and a cold northerly wind through a bleak seascape of rocky, mountainous islands. The ‘Arctic Circle Monument’ is actually about a mile too far south, but if you have got that far it does not make a lot of difference. The next main stop was Bodø, the northern transport hub bustling with ferries, cargo and fishing boats. After careful preparation – a long al fresco lunch overlooking the harbour – we turned in for a while before setting off for a ‘night sail’ to our ultimate goal – the Lofoten Islands. At last we were able to use our old adversary the north wind to our advantage as we headed west to Vaeroy Island, at the southern tip of the Lofoten Archipelago. We were in blazing sunshine all the way as the sun stayed well above the northern horizon and gave off real warmth. It felt odd to be renewing our suncream at 1 o’clock in the morning. In stark contrast the wind was freezing cold, and whoever was on the helm, out of the shelter of the spray hood, had to wrap up well. The Lofoten Islands curve out in a sickle shape from the mainland, stretching for about 100 miles west and south and enclosing the Vestfjord, where huge numbers of cod come to spawn each year. The entire economy of Lofoten is built around fishing, and every village has drying racks where the split cod hang for months. The islands are renowned for their beauty and warm climate, and as the mountains emerged ahead the views were stunning. Puffins used to be the Vaeroy islanders’ staple diet, and they bred a special dog to hunt them in their burrows. The ‘Lundehund’ has six toes and is so flexible that it can extend its legs sideways and turn its head to face backwards. We did not believe it either – but it is true. Joined by our daughter Fiona, after a happy week cruising around pretty Lofoten villages we reached our northernmost point

at Trollfjord, 68o21N, 014o56E, about 110 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Trollfjord is spectacular: almost sheer walls, with naked rock on one side and a few gnarly trees clinging to the other.

SAILING SOUTH

From here it should have been downhill all the way, but unfortunately things do not work that way in Norway. The classic problem is that early in the season, when you are heading north, the wind is reliably northerly. Then, as you turn south, it goes south-westerly or disappears altogether. Since much of the Indreleia is too narrow for relaxed tacking, you are likely to spend more time motoring than you would like to. We were lucky for the first few days, and as we had chanced on the hottest summer in memory, with 30oC just south of the Arctic Circle, pottering along in the sunshine was not a hardship. A rare thrill was being surrounded by a large pod of pilot whales, who happily spouted and snorted around us for half an hour, and about 15 dolphins with young. In Bergen we moored on the Brygge, in the beautifully preserved Hanseatic quarter and only yards from fishmarket stalls selling whale sausages. Leaving Bergen in zero wind, we anchored for lunch and swam in a tiny cove surrounded by bare rocks. For the next two weeks we meandered south, through the Western Fjords and into spectacular Lysefjord with ‘Pulpit Rock’, a ledge overhanging a 500m drop. Stavanger is a picturesque city with a wonderful Petroleum Museum full of big boys’ toys, and of course we diverted to see Utsire island, star of the Shipping Forecast. Our final Norwegian anchorage, Skudevikkelen, was also the most difficult to get into – through a narrow channel between a submerged shoal and a huge rock, which had to be passed with about a metre to spare. As we looked for a good spot to anchor we found to our astonishment that the only other yacht was not only British (the first Red Ensign we had seen since Bergen) but a beautiful Westerly Fulmar. So our last evening in Norway became a Westerly ‘muster’. It was slightly surreal, but a fine way to end our Norwegian adventure. First published in full in Cruising magazine in 2017

John Brand learned to sail in Kuwait in 1986, breaking bits on other people’s boats before buying his own GK24. After leaving the Foreign Office and moving home to Edinburgh, he raced on the Clyde on Hops, a 36’ Laurie Davidson one-tonner, and played Swallows and Amazons with his children in a Drascombe Lugger. John and his wife Kyla have sailed in Australia, the Mediterranean and the Baltic as well as round the West Coast of Scotland. In 2013 they bought Sula, a Westerly Oceanranger in which they have cruised the Hebrides, Arctic Norway, the Baltic, Sweden, Denmark and the Atlantic coast of France.

The Cruising Association is a mutually supportive notfor-profit association that is 100 per cent dedicated to those who cruise on small boats - whether sail or motor- and its extraordinary mass of first-hand information, collected and shared by its members, is of unequalled quality, quantity, breadth and relevance. Every month the Photo of the Month winner will receive a bottle of Opihr Gin With a lightly-spiced flavour profile that brings the exotic intensity of the Orient to mind, Opihr Gin (pronounced O-peer) is a sensory treat for adventurous gin lovers. It is a London Dry Gin featuring handpicked botanicals such as spicy cubeb berries from Indonesia, cardamom and black pepper from India and coriander from Morocco. Opihr is perfect as the key ingredient for a classic G&T with a twist of orange and a mixer. If you are wanting something a little more adventurous, try Opihr Gin with Ginger Ale, or if a Bloody Mary is more your thing, try the gin version - a Red Snapper - replacing your favourite vodka with Opihr Gin to give it an exotic twist. Opihr was inspired by the legendary region of the same name which prospered during the reign of King Solomon, and was famed for its wealth and riches. King Solomon regularly received cargoes of gold, silver and spices from Opihr and, whilst the exact location remains a mystery, it is thought to have been in the Orient, along the Ancient Spice Route. With the Spirit of Adventure at the heart of the brand, Opihr is the official Gin of Sunsail, the UK yacht charter company. www.opihr.com Send in your photos now! BOATING HOLIDAYS EVERY MONTH WE BRING YOU A SELECTION OF SUPER OFFERS

ARC 2018

Sail across the Atlantic in the largest trans-ocean sailing event in the world, the ARC 2018. With over 2,700 nautical miles of sailing over 25 nights, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers has become an ideal way to make a transatlantic crossing for the first time. No experience is necessary to join the ARC but there will be three days of preparation and training before you leave to ensure you are happy with everything you need to know. You will be expected to get involved with all aspects of sailing the boat and help with all of the cooking and cleaning throughout the trip. 22 November – 17 December £3, 995 per person tallships.org/sail-with-us/arc-2018

HEART OF THE LAKES

Self-catering agency Heart of the Lakes is offering its clients a new service when they book a holiday at one of their properties across the Lake District National Park. Customers can now enjoy an exclusive sailing experience on a Beneteau Oceanis 38 from their associate company Lake District Sailing. Grey Pearl has room for a party of up to six and two crew members. All charters are skippered by a fully qualified professional yacht master who will give a memorable cruise on Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake. The three-hour charter costs from £300 and includes exclusive use of the yacht, and on board refreshments.

FISHING ON BOARD

BVI Yacht Charters got in touch to let us know that all their bareboats are now registered fishing vessels. The deep blue and crystal clear shallows found in the BVI offer some of the best fishing in the Caribbean. Anyone over 18 who is fishing must have a recreational fishing permit, which is granted to visiting tourists who wish to fish on a catch and release basis. Last Stop Sport can arrange the fishing permits for you for $64 per person. Note, it takes at least four business days to arrange. BVI Yacht Charters can provide you the license number of the boat, which you will need for the permit application. www.bviyachtcharters.com

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

How well travelled are you and your family? According to a study by Royal Caribbean, British kids have visited four European cities, flown long haul three times and been skiing twice – all before their tenth birthday. Researchers looked at the travel habits of the average child now, compared to previous generations and revealed today’s youngsters have seen almost as much of the world in their first 10 years, than their grandparents did in an entire lifetime.

In fact, the study showed the average child has been abroad six times before their tenth birthday, while their grandparents have only been abroad eight times in their life. According to the research by Royal Caribbean, today’s 10-year-olds have been on an average of two cruises, four ferries and seven aeroplanes. They have also swum in the Mediterranean Sea four times, the Atlantic three times and the Caribbean Sea once.

NANA PRINCESS

If you are looking for a five-star holiday by the sea with access to watersports then Crete’s new Nana Princess could be just the ticket. This beachfront hotel is located on the north side of the island, with private pools in many of the suites, three restaurants, a white sandy beach and luxurious health club and spa. As well as relaxing on the beach, exploring the local area by horse back or bike guests can take to the water for scuba diving or paddle boarding. Nana Princess rates start from €155 /£135* per person per night in a superior room category. www.nanaprincess.gr

SAIL BY THE CABIN

As mentioned last month, Sunsail is launching a new Sail By The Cabin experience that is perfect for solo adventurers, couples or friends who want to experience the freedom of the ocean and all the fun of a flotilla. Sailing in a group of up to 10 other yachts (a flotilla), with a private cabin for up to two people, and an experienced skipper included, the new Sail By The Cabin holiday is a great way to enjoy a sailing adventure in the Mediterranean without having to book a whole yacht. Lucy Black, Head of Marketing at Sunsail, said: “A sailing holiday offers so much more than the traditional beach holiday, yet so many are put off by the cost of booking a whole yacht or thinking they already need to know how to sail to experience one. Sailing as part of a flotilla with a professional

skipper on board, and following a wonderfully crafted itinerary of must-visits for the destination, gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and leisure.” Sail By The Cabin is available in Greece and Croatia in September and October. The holiday includes social evenings, beach barbecues, punch parties and an optional end of week regatta, plus snorkelling gear, kayak and stand up paddleboard. There are three seven-day holidays to choose from: 1 September 2018, Krka Flotilla in Croatia aboard a Sunsail 53 at £1,825 per double cabin 16 September, Korčula Flotilla in Croatia aboard a Sunsail 454 at £2,400 per double cabin 14 October, Lefkas Flotilla in Greece aboard a Sunsail 53 at £1,225 per double cabin www.sunsail.co.uk/sailing-holidays/flotilla-sailing/ cabin-charter

TEST OF SKILL AND SPEED Thousands of young powerboating enthusiasts have been testing their skills on the throttle at clubs up and down the country in a id to secure a spot at one of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship Area Finals.

T

he top drivers from each area heat go on to battle it out on the water to be crowned Area Champions and claim their spot at the 2018 National Final at the Southampton Boat Show. “Despite being a race against the clock, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is not just about speed as competitors need to have honed their skills to be able to pull off all aspects of the course with precision while keeping the power on to clinch a place at the National Final,” explained Andrew Norton, Powerboat Projects Manager.

their previous times as well as seeing new competitors getting the RIB bug,” Andrew explained. “We are impressed every year by the skill and dedication of the young drivers, as well as the times they set on the leaderboard, which seem to be getting faster and faster. We are looking forward to seeing what the young drivers can do this year!” Area Finals have also taken place for London & South East (x2), Channel Islands, Midlands, South and North West, with five more Area Finals taking place. The 2018 Championship concludes with the National Final held at the Southampton Boat Show (16 September). The winners of each Area Final in each age group come together to battle it out on the grand stage for the title of Honda RYA Youth RIB Champion 2018. As well as competing for the accolade of National Champion, the 26 young drivers are also battling out to win a prize for their club, organisation or training centre. In the 8 - 12 age group the winner’s prize is a Honwave T40 RIB with a Honda BF20 engine, while the winner of the 13 - 16 age group claims a Highfield OM460 RIB with a Honda BF50 engine.

THE COURSE

The testing course includes slalom, stop exercise, 360 degree reverse around a buoy manoeuvre, followed by a sprint to the finish. The slalom buoys are set 12.5m apart for 4.6m RIBs and for larger boats the buoys are set accordingly. Skill and control, and not necessarily speed, are the most important factors. Each competitor has two runs, one as a practice and one as a ‘hot lap’. Both runs are timed and the fastest time put forward. However, competitors need to be careful not to acquire any penalties.  Touching a buoy - five seconds (the STOP exercise buoy can be touched without penalty)  Missing a buoy - five seconds  Failing to come to a complete stop at the STOP exercise - 10 seconds  Failing to complete the STOP exercise - 10 seconds  Flooding in reverse - five seconds  Failing to complete reverse exercise - five seconds  Instructor/competent adult discretion - +10 seconds (i.e. crashing through gear changes or any other misdemeanours the instructor/ competent adult deems necessary)

AREA FINALS

The 2018 Area Finals got underway back in May at Belfast Harbour Marina for the Northern Ireland Area Final where 12-year-old Joshua Kane from East Antrim Boat Club took top spot for the fourth year running in the 8 - 12 age group with a winning time of 1.12.37, beating his own record from 2017. “I feel like I did well today and I am proud of my performance. I am looking forward to competing at the national final in September,” Joshua said.

TAKING PART

While in the 13 - 16 age group, Kelly Patterson (15), also from East Antrim Boat Club, took first place in 1.04.91. It was then on to Port Edgar Watersports for Scotland’s Area Final, where 12-yearold Oban Duncan from Balloch put in a blistering time of 57.82 seconds. Oban, also a previous Area Champion, said: “That was great. I was nervous when I first went out but after the first lap it got easier. I am really looking forward to heading to Southampton this year after setting this time.” This year Oban has also raced in the GT15 circuit, which races at different venues around the UK, and in her first race finished third overall in the 9 16-year-old category. Former UK Honda RYA Youth Champion, Jamie Paterson (14) from Findhorn, returned to win the 13 - 16-year-old category with a time of 58.12 seconds. “Each year we see many competitors return hoping to clinch the title or beat

Now in its 17th year, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is Britain’s leading programme introducing young people to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers. Past champions have gone on to have successful powerboat racing careers while some have chosen to share their knowledge and teach others, provide valuable safety cover at club events, become commercial operators or work on superyachts. Youngsters looking to take part in the championship need to belong to an RYA affiliated club or attend an RYA training centre taking part in the championship. Clubs or training centres looking to get involved and hold their own club heats should email the event organisers at youthrib@rya.org.uk for an information pack. www.rya.org.u/go/hondayouthrib

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrow oats, and personal watercraft.

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH MARK LIGHT, CLIPPER RACE DIRECTOR

to anyone regardless of sailing experience – is not only a fantastic adventure, but it pushes people to heights that even they probably never thought possible. That alone is enough for me to recommend giving it a go. Being pragmatic about things, I would say get interested, do your research, talk to us at Clipper Ventures but also try to talk to as many previous crew or skippers as you can – most of all, be open to the idea that YOU can do this!

WHY DO YOU THINK IT HAS BECOME SUCH AN ICONIC SAILING EVENT?

Mainly because the Clipper Race is unique in that anybody can apply to take part and also because it is one of the world’s greatest challenges – the Everest of Sailing. It is a tough challenge, of course, but then the very best things are tough and that is what gives the sense of achievement during and afterwards. If this was easy then it probably would not exist. Skipper Mark Light, at the nav station on board the Derry-Londonderry, in the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race. Image: OnEdition

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LATEST CLI E ACE

Wow, there have been so many. Seeing the fleet leaving Liverpool way back on 20 August 2017 was fantastic. It was a beautiful day, so much hard work and effort put in by everybody to make it happen and then they were off.. racing around our planet! The fleet departure from Albert Dock and race start in the River Mersey went flawlessly and I felt very proud to be a part of something very special.

WHICH TEAM HAS STOOD OUT FOR YOU IN THIS RACE, AND WHY?

It is very difficult to single out any one team but if pushed I would have to say Visit Seattle is a stand out team. They have an excellent skipper in Nikki Henderson, who was 23-years-old when I interviewed her, and it was obvious that she was wise beyond her years apart from being highly experienced for somebody of that age. She was 24-years-old when the race began and I knew that she would put together a team that would be successful. The Visit Seattle team are cohesive and have developed so much during this campaign. Above all else, the team is competitive and at the time of writing are third in the overall standings. They have a great opportunity to finish higher and could, possibly, even win the race overall (Nikki went on to lead Visit Seattle team to Race start for the 2017-18 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, Albert Dock, Liverpool. victory in Race 12, the penultimate race, from New York to Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland). Turn to the news pages to discover the eventual Clipper Race winner.

WHAT OTHER CLIPPER EVENTS ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH?

As the Clipper Race Director, I oversee first and foremost the Clipper Round the World Race (overseeing 11 yachts, 11 skippers, 712 crew members, 13 ocean races spanning 40,000nm over 11 months) but also other events that we do such as competing in the Round The Island Race, The Fastnet Race, The Round Britain and Ireland Race and any other corporate sailing events that we get involved with.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU?

The ones that stand out for me are Pete Goss who completed the 1996/97 Vendee Globe and completed the dramatic rescue of Frenchman Raphael Dinelli in hurricane force winds in the Southern Ocean just before his boat sank. Ellen MacArthur; an outstanding individual who achieved so much in offshore racing and finished second in the 2001-02 Vendee Globe and also broke the solo non-stop world record for sailing around the world in 2004. Alex Thomson, former Clipper Race skipper, the youngest skipper ever to win an around the world race and multi Vendee Globe competitor finishing on the podium twice. And, of course, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Clipper Race Chairman and Founder and one of the all-time legends of sailing. I remember my first day in the office as a Clipper Race skipper and being addressed by Sir Robin thinking…. this is one of my sailing heroes, and he is now my boss! www.clipperroundtheworld.com

“I remember my first day in the office as a Clipper Race skipper and being addressed by Sir Robin thinking…. this is one of my sailing heroes, and he is now my boss!”

DO YOU SAIL, AND IF SO WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE PART IN THE NEXT CLIPPER RACE?

I do sail and have my own boat – a lovely Contessa 35. I have been professionally sailing for 15 years and skippered the Derry~Londonderry yacht entry in the 2011-12 edition of the Clipper Round the World Race.

DOES PLANNING FOR THE NEXT CLIPPER RACE START RIGHT AWAY?

Yes, pretty much. As soon as we get the race fleet back to Gosport, work starts almost immediately on the extensive refit programme for each yacht. Recruiting 11 new and outstanding skippers is a lengthy process that has already begun and we are well into the training of the crew for the next edition – the Clipper 2019-20 Race.

WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST TO PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THE NEXT CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD RACE? It is very simple… go for it! It is a truly unique experience and one which has very definitely changed lives. It is easy to look into it and decide against doing it for all sorts of reasons, but taking on the challenge – which is open

BUYING SECOND HAND Buying a second hand boat can be an incredibly exciting time, but to prevent the dream turning into a nightmare follow these top tips from the RYA.

THE

Once you have found your dream boat, it would be wise with an investment of this size to proceed with caution, ensuring you avoid any potentially expensive shortcuts. Paying attention to the following steps will help to ensure your purchase proceeds smoothly. “Buying a second hand boat can be a pretty big investment, yet despite the expense, the legal side of buying a boat can be as simple as buying a newspaper. With that in mind it makes sense to undertake a few basic checks before parting with your money and actually committing to buy,” explains Mandy Peters, RYA Legal Manager.

THE AGREEMENTS

A sale and purchase agreement, as the name suggests, governs the rights and responsibility of the parties to the contract and determines the transactional process, encompassing such matters as payment of the deposit, the buyer’s entitlement to have a survey carried out on the vessel and conduct a sea trial; acceptance of the boat or otherwise; termination of the agreement and how disputes between the parties are to be resolved. “Our advice is that you read the agreement carefully and only once you are satisfied with the terms of the agreement consider the next stage of the process,” added Mandy. “Prior to paying a deposit, make enquiries with the broker as to how the deposit and/or completion funds are to be held. A standard deposit is 10 per cent of the purchase price (although it may be possible to negotiate the payment of a reduced rate) and it is important to agree on the method to be used to pay the funds.”

Mastercla ss

TRIAL & SURVEY

Once satisfied with the documentation, a sea trial is recommended. You will need to review the sale and purchase agreement carefully to ensure that you are entitled to withdraw from the sale if you are not happy with the boat following the sea trial. A survey is considered essential by most purchasers to check the condition of the boat and its engine/ equipment. Although the boat may appear superficially to be in excellent condition, a survey is nevertheless a sensible precaution. The buyer may be able to withdraw from the purchase as a result of the findings of the survey or renegotiate the vessel’s price, or request that the seller rectifies any defects at his expense, prior to completion of the contract. Although the law is not prescriptive as to the documentation to accompany the sale and purchase of a vessel, documentation is required to comply with certain legal requirements such as the Recreational Craft Directive, compliance

with national and EU-wide VAT rules and any national registration requirements. If the seller is unable to produce documentation, the buyer may be entitled to withdraw from the sale.

INFORMATION

For more information, pick up a copy of the RYA Boat Buyers’ Handbook available in both print and e-Book formats at www.rya.org.uk/shop. Written in an accessible fashion, the RYA Boat Buyers’ Handbook is a vital purchase for anyone looking to get on the water in their own boat. The RYA has also produced a Sale and Purchase Pack, exclusively available to RYA members, containing all the essential information on buying and selling your boat, which can be downloaded from the RYA website or by contacting the legal team on 023 8060 4223 or legal@rya.org.uk.

So if you are off in search of sunny weather and new waters this summer, always remember to Check, Clean, Dry:  Check your equipment, clothing and footwear  Clean everything thoroughly before you return  Dry everything as some species can live for more than two weeks in damp conditions The Green Blue, the RYA and British Marine’s joint environmental campaign, has developed a series of guidance videos for boaters looking at how to Check, Clean and Dry their crafts. This includes specific dinghy, windsurf, powerboat and personal watercraft guidance as well as a general introductory video to invasive species. The Green Blue will also be developing a video guide for Marina Operators on the benefits of having a ‘Biosecurity Plan’ in place and what to consider when developing one with support from the government’s RAPID LIFE Project - www.nonnativespecies.org/index. cfm?sectionid=139. RAPID LIFE is a three-year project piloting innovative approaches to invasive species management in freshwater aquatic, riparian and coastal environments. It is led by the Animal and Plant Health Agency in partnership with Natural England and Bristol Zoological Society.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

C

heck Clean Dry Summer 2018 – help stop the spread of invasive species and diseases from abroad. If you are off in search of sunny weather and new waters this summer remember to Check, Clean, Dry to make sure you do not bring back any hitchhikers. Invasive non-native species can damage boat engines and props, block up waterways, make navigation difficult and harm the environment. As a water user you may unknowingly be spreading them from one water body to another. Animals, eggs, larvae and tiny plant fragments

American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus). Image: GBNNSS can easily be carried on equipment, shoes and clothing, and some can survive out of water in damp conditions for more than two weeks.

BIODIVERSITY THREAT

There are currently around 140 aquatic non-native species in Britain; many species thrive in both salt and fresh water. Their main means of spreading is via boat hulls or propellers, or within bilge or engine cooling water systems. Once established in a new waterbody, invasive species can become unmanageable. You can help

Noble Crayfish (Astacus astacus). Image: RPS Group PLC to stop the spread by remembering to Check, Clean, Dry your clothing and equipment when you leave the water. If you are heading abroad this summer, it is even more important to Check, Clean, Dry while you are away to avoid bringing back a new invasive species or disease.

TRAVEL SAFELY

This summer, the RYA is seeking to reduce the risk of introduction of new invasive species and diseases by raising awareness amongst overseas travellers.

Campaign Manager for The Green Blue, Kate Fortnam, explains: “It is important that boaters demonstrate that they are doing all they can to reduce the spread of invasive species in order to help protect the environment. “It is in everyone’s interest to protect the natural environment that supports our recreational boating activity. Later in the year we will also be focusing on what canal boat owners and businesses can do to Check, Clean and Dry their boats.” For more information or to download your free copy of The Green Guide to Boating visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk. Boaters can also head to www.rya.org.uk/go/alienspecies to find out more about how to ‘Stop the Spread’. Follow the campaign on Twitter @CheckCleanDryGB and @TheGreenBlue. DRESSED FOR SUCCESS Liz Rushall looks at the extensive work that goes into the development of our sailing gear.

T

he walls of sailing gear hanging inside any large chandlery can appear a little daunting. At first glance there is a myriad of seemingly very similar choices and styles of waterproofs, all from different brands. Thankfully, a lot of clothing design has moved on from the days of rather cumbersome, one size fits all kit. Most manufacturers now recognise 50 per cent of the population are women too. In recent years, technical sailing gear has seen further advances especially with fabric technology. Water shedding mid and base-layers, micro-thin high-stretch neoprene and flexible impact resistant fabrics being just a few. Some big brand names have come and gone from the sailing market over the last few decades. Yet there are a few new brands tackling niche areas and shaking things up. Investing in a quality sailing gear is certainly a good investment, however it is not cheap. So it is worth understanding what lies behind well engineered gear and what is behind those banks of products before choosing.

we do not stop until we succeed,” says Milczarchzyk. “The beauty of working so closely with these crews meant we could accelerate the design and testing process. As a result we compressed what would normally have been about two years of development work into a much shorter time span. “The VOR teams created the catalyst and we had multiple prototypes out there testing our concepts during the lead up to the race. This continued throughout various legs. In contrast, some other suppliers were delivering ‘off the shelf’ gear just before the start, and repairing on the way round.” Zhik’s end result is a radically different range of Ocean gear. Isotak X has a unique ‘adaptive’ zip-on/zip-off hood and collar, clear protective face-visors and various zip-on balaclavas for different climates, creating one versatile garment that eliminates the need to carry a range of different waterproof tops.

Ocean Fabric durability testing machine

FINDING THE RIGHT FABRICS

‘TYPICAL’ DESIGN PROCESS

There is much more behind technical sailing apparel design and manufacture than generic sports clothing. Typically, development of a new model is a process of iteration and evolution. For many manufacturers it starts with reviewing an existing product, or a competitor’s product, or responding to feedback, especially from retailers. The design team, in-house or contracted, will make some style and colour changes and tweak some features. Samples are produced from industry standard fabrics and where possible

these are put out on test. Manufacturing suppliers are then sourced and the garment goes into production. The snags can be the testing phase, which often gets cut short due to pressures of product launch events and production order times. And certainly there have been cases of straight plagiarism, where brands have seen their

“Working with the Volvo Ocean Race teams AkzoNobel and Dongfeng Race Team, the initial concept design work on their Ocean gear started 18 months out from the race.” designs appear on the rails in different fabrics under a lesser-known or new brand name.

R&D LED DESIGN APPROACH

A company that has a reputation for doing things differently is the Australian brand, Zhik, which changed the face of wetsuit design, and dinghy sailing culture, through extensive development into better materials and better designed garments. Over the last decade this has resulted in a wholesale change in dinghy wetsuits as other brands started to adopt similar thinner, stretch neoprenes. Since developing kit for Olympic teams at Athens, Beijing and 2012, the R&D team have continued the same ‘out of the box’ design approach as the product range has expanded.

R&D CULTURE

Testing the Seaboots

Bart Milczarchzyk, Head of Global Design, explains: “Zhik has grown up on a strong R&D culture. It is all about learning and adapting to reach real breakthrough innovations. We spend a lot of time listening to athletes identify problems. “Our designers come from a range of industrial and retail design backgrounds, creating diverse perspectives that challenge the ‘norm’, often resulting in very different approaches. This thinking is then verified and tested by the sailors.” Typical ‘problems’ may range from America’s Cup sailors needing high levels of physical impact protection as well as agility; Olympic sailors needing protection in warm and humid

conditions; or Volvo Ocean Race teams needing reduced weight on board plus protection from relentless spray, biting winds and intense heat. The lead times behind developing a new design, thorough testing and sign off ready for market can vary significantly depending on the project. For Zhik, working with the Volvo Ocean Race teams AkzoNobel and Dongfeng Race Team, the initial concept design work on their Ocean gear started 18 months out from the race. Having already secured an extremely durable waterproof fabric, the focus was on the garment design to provide superior safety, comfort, performance and versatility. In other words reducing the number of garments needed on board. “The R&D led approach is all about being proficient, ensuring all the groundwork is done to get the products to market. When we commit to a new partnership, such as the Volvo Teams,

Materials and fabric selection can also take considerable time in the development process. Fabrics are often tested on many levels in-house and externally. At Zhik, after initial verification with in-house testing and laboratory testing at universities, the lengthy process of on-water testing begins to confirm and verify the theoretical data. This process may repeat multiple times, based on what is learned. A classic case was the design of Zhik’s Seaboot 800, an offshore boot made with a soft, high-grip, sole. Milczarchzyk recalls: “The sole R&D was inspired by our designers’ industrial expertise. We tested many soles from the marine, outdoor and other markets. It involved cutting up hundreds of shoes to create specimens, and analysing the soles with lab technicians to understand the connection between rubber formula, grip pattern and rubber hardness. “From this we built a picture of what variables worked best, and repeated the tests with different variables until finding the ideal balanced formula of grip, hardness and durability. “It transpired that the Dunlop volley tennis shoes, which are popular with roof tillers in Australia, proved to have a great grip pattern. We produced various tools to define the best rubber grip pattern along with abrasion testing. “This accumulated knowledge led to the ZKG sole now used in our boots. It is the highest grip, non-marking sole in the wet, with great durability for daily wear.” www.zhik.com Words: Liz Rushall, Rushall Marketing SeaBoot 800 sole and heel grip

Fambridge Yacht Haven’s 25 ton boat hoist has been replaced by a larger 40 ton hoist improving the marina’s range of boatyard

MARINE SEVENTEEN OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Visitors to MDL’s Hythe Marina Village have an enticing new place to dine this summer with the launch of Marine Seventeen. Formerly La Vista, the restaurant has undergone a complete overhaul before opening to diners on 21 July. Visitors can indulge in delicious nibbles like vegetable samosas with mango chutney or pork scratchings with apple sauce. Hearty favourites include chicken, ham and leek pie, steaks and double-stacked burgers and there are innovative and tempting plates like the chargrilled

aubergine steak with roast veggies, brie and roasted new potatoes with basil dressing. There will also be Sunday roasts and a special fresh fish menu befitting Marine Seventeen’s waterside location. The spacious and quiet restaurant is being billed as a fantastic venue for a family meal, open for lunch, dinner, drinks and coffees with beautiful views overlooking the boats in Hythe Marina and the sailing out on Southampton Water. Just the thing after working up an appetite on the water.

FLOATEL CABINS FOR MILFORD DEVELOPMENT

The Port of Milford Haven has welcomed Pembrokeshire County Council’s decision to approve a revision to the Milford Waterfront development’s outline planning consent. The planning committee voted unanimously to support the scheme. During construction, approximately 100 jobs will be created on site with a further 36 in the supply chain, and more than 600 job opportunities are set to be created once the development is fully operational.

Neil Jenkins, Development Director at the Port of Milford Haven, said: “We are delighted that the planning committee has granted a resolution for outline consent for the Milford Waterfront development. “The estimated 400,000 additional visitors that will be attracted here on completion are expected to generate £9 million of expenditure for Milford Haven alone and it is a significant project for the whole of Pembrokeshire.” www.milfordwaterfront.co.uk

LARGS HOSTS TESLA ROADSHOW Following the installation of two electric vehicle charging points last year, Largs Yacht Haven held its first ever Tesla Roadshow with the Tesla Edinburgh office visiting the Firth of Clyde marina for a busy summer weekend. Berth holders were invited to test drive the Model S and Model X electric cars for free, with over 30 berth holders taking advantage of the unique opportunity. This is not the first time that the

PREMIER TACKLE PLASTIC

Ayrshire marina has partnered up with non-marine companies. The marina hosts a Porsche weekend in partnership with Euroyachts yacht brokers, and last year they held their first ever Gin Fest. This summer, they have gone even further by launching a gin and wine tasting afternoon, and a beer festival with both events taking place over the Largs Regatta Festival weekend in late August. www.largsregattafestival.com

Portsmouth based environmental consultancy and contract manager, Helistrat, has installed two Seabins in Premier’s Port Solent and Gosport marinas to help tackle marine plastic waste and raise the profile of The Seabin Project. Seabins are floating rubbish bins, which are located in the water at marinas, docks, yacht clubs and commercial ports. Each bin can collect up to half a tonne of floating debris per year including microplastics as small as 2mm. A submersible water pump, capable of displacing 25 litres per hour, sucks water in from the surface. This passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin and is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped inside. The Seabins are emptied twice a day. On retrieval from the water the material from the Seabins’ catch bags is sorted to extract recyclable materials, including plastics, which are sent to reprocessors. Non-recyclable material is used to offset fossil fuels in the production of energy. “As a business located near some of the UK’s business ports and marinas we wanted to do something to help tackle the global problem of discarded ocean plastic and

raise the profile of the innovative Seabin Project,” said Ben Richardson, Trading Director at Helistrat. “The only way we are going to eliminate the 10 - 12 million tonnes of plastic that ends up in our oceans is by not producing this waste in the first place, but until then, we need to find ways to help minimise its impact, remedy the damage done and recycle this material.”

THE CHANGING FACE OF MARINAS P

Each month we look at the way modern day marinas are improving their sites to meet the demands of today’s oaters and visitors. Hot o the press this month remier reveals how its innovative plans for the regeneration of Swanwick Marina will make berthing easier and safer.

remier Marinas has revised its plans to complete the regeneration of Swanwick Marina following its £5.8m investment in the construction of a new state-of-the-art boatyard in 2014. The marina’s new plans represent a further investment of £8m and show a number of innovative features that will be of particular interest to its berth holders including a unique, modern renewal of the floating marina to make accessing and using the pontoons safer and easier, a welcoming marina bridgehead building and a dedicated berth holders’ lounge. Plus, at the heart of the site, overlooking the water, a new food and beverage building is proposed and, close by, there are plans for an impressive pavilion building to house boat sales and marine businesses (subject to planning approval). The eastern side of the marina will be cleared to create additional boat storage ashore and dedicated berth holder parking; Premier is considering a range of marine based options for this land for the future.

FLOATING MARINA

The new floating marina will create 333 berths (6m - 40m); an overall increase of 59 on the current configuration. The pontoons will run east-west and, uniquely, all berth holders will enjoy a

The planned new bridgehead building at Swanwick

berth measuring at least the length of their boat. This feature, coupled with fairway and pontoon specifications that exceed industry standards, will make berthing easier and safer - particularly for powerboat owners stepping directly on to their pontoon from the back of their boat. One of the most innovative aspects of Premier’s plans lies at the centre section of the marina, where the berths will be set 700mm above water level (200mm above standard height) to reduce customers’ deck to pontoon ‘jump down’ when berthing their vessel. In the new configuration all the pontoons will be

accessed via a single central bridgehead, which has again been designed to make life easier by presenting a substantially lower access gradient than the current bridgeheads. At the top of the bridgehead berth holders will find a new undercover bridgehead building providing a customer service and information point, trolley station, bin store and secure access to the pontoons. Dedicated drop off/pick up parking for berth holders is planned in front of the building to ensure that customers can get close to the bridgehead when provisioning up. During the in-water redevelopment the marina basin will also be dredged.

PHASED DEVELOPMENT

Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Swanwick Marina will begin in October with the renewal of the pontoons on the eastern side of the marina and the build of a 40 slot dinghy rack - completion of this phase will be April 2019. Phase 2 of the renewal will take place in the winter of 2019/20 and will see the outstanding pontoons in the plan renewed and the construction of the new bridgehead building. Work on the new pavilion building is also scheduled for the winter of 2019/20 and the new food and beverage building will be completed in 2021.

All the new pontoons will be equipped with an improved supply of 32amp sockets and better WiFi access. Premier Marinas’ CEO Pete Bradshaw commented: “Swanwick Marina was constructed in the late 1960s/early ‘70s when boats tended to be smaller and narrower. The current pontoons do not meet modern industry standards - or the quality expected by our berth holders. Alongside that, the water depth in some areas of the marina is becoming challenging for deeper keeled vessels. “For these reasons we recognise that we need to invest further in Swanwick to secure its future success and to add value for our customers - with better food and beverage provision, more lifestyle facilities and safer, easier access to pontoons. Premier’s vision for thoughtful marina design will greatly improve our customers’ experience and safety. Our plans for Swanwick will set a new standard for marina development.” Premier Marinas owns and operates nine South Coast marinas that include locations in Eastbourne, Brighton, Chichester, Southsea in Langstone Harbour, Port Solent, Gosport with specialist boatyard Endeavour Quay in Portsmouth Harbour, Swanwick on the Hamble, Noss on Dart and Falmouth and has more than 5,000 berths holders.

The news scare about a shortage of beers due to a shortage of manufactured carbon dioxide was serious overkill. All at Sea readers would, I hope, be well aware that when we talk fizzy in this column we are talking about naturally produced sparkling wines or real ales. Carbonation occurs naturally in real ale and Méthode Champenoise sparkling white wines as the yeasts produce carbon dioxide along with alcohol when they eat sugar from the barley or grape. The carbon dioxide naturally produced dissolves into the liquid to be an integral part of the drink, building its own pressure in the bottle until it is opened. There are more than enough naturally conditioned wines and beers for the whole of the regatta season and beyond. It is true that some beers use artificial carbonation, lagers mainly. But if there is a shortage of UK produced beers it would be a good time to try the German or Czechoslovakian imports. Czech Pilsner Urquell invented the bottom fermented blond beer we now call lager in 1842 in Pilsner town, and would do very nicely. Cruising a yacht or launching a small boat off a beach, some fun drinks will help you get into the holiday spirit. This trilogy of £6 red, white and rosé wines caught my eye at M&S. Mendoza Argentina Beach House Rosé, 12.5 per cent and a Fair Trade item. It is a bold rosé colour but as dry as many paler rosé wines. Le Fleuve Bleu-Rouge 2017. Le fleuve translates as a small coastal river. This wine is non-specific, made in the south of France in the Beaujolais region (but not Beaujolais AOC) from Grenache, Carignan and Syrah grapes. At 12 per cent, it is light bodied with nice fruit flavours and is good for barbecued red meats. Recommended for drinking young i.e. now. Le Fleuve Bleu-Blanc, 2017. Again non-specific French, using mainly Grenache grapes, 12 per cent and very dry. Recommended with picnic pizza and shellfish and green salads. Drink now while young and fruity. There are many Italian red wines, like Primitivo, d’Abruzzio and Chianti, but Chianti seems to have fallen out of favour with UK drinkers. I think it is 5 5 1 4 7 3 7 3 worth a revisit. 7 1 7 3 2 8 4 1

Chianti revival?

Chianti is any wine made in the Chianti region, in central Tuscany. Last century it had a certain fame for being in a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket, called a ‘fiasco’. The basket is still available, priced about £8 a bottle, and for sailors and the beach it could be a good idea. The basket protects the bottle from breakage and if it is kept soaking wet and hung up to swing in the breeze, evaporation will produce natural chilling. Without the basket I found a nice example for £7 at Sainsbury’s. Mondelli Chianti Riserva 2015, 12.5 per cent, is a traditional Chianti from Sangiovese hillside grapes, aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years, with a smooth texture and smoky cherry notes. And for a beer, finding Gold Hobgoblin on a recent river boat trip was a surprise to me. Hobgoblin is well known as a dark ruby-red real ale from Marston’s Wychewood brewery and is good for winter parties. Gold, 4.5 per cent, is a shiny gold colour and its powerful hoppy flavour bears a distinct resemblance to the dark original. This is good for picnics or small boating with no on board fridge as it does not need to be particularly cold to be refreshing. From £1.25. 1 3 2
